Welcome to Boettcher Concert Hall and the Colorado Symphony community. Whether this is your first concert or your hundredth, we are grateful you chose to share the experience of live symphonic music with us today.

Since joining the Colorado Symphony, I have asked many people what the symphony means to them. Answers have ranged from poignant to hilarious, but they always come back to the inspiring musicians you see before you. The Colorado Symphony is a living example of individuals working in unison toward a vision beyond the singular parts they play. They remind us that visionary ideas are attainable when we work together to amplify those around us through our individual roles.

Here at the Colorado Symphony, we have the distinct honor of enriching the lives of our fellow Coloradans and beyond with the profundity of live symphonic music. We aim to create cultural experiences for everyone in our community that looks to the future while honoring the past of our distinctive art form.

As one of my favorite composers Robert Schumann so eloquently stated, “To send light into men’s hearts – such is the artist’s duty.” While the past years have been challenging, we hope you find community, joy, inspiration, and light with us this holiday season. To learn more about our work on and off the stage, visit our website to explore our “We are the Colorado Symphony” campaign.

Join us today in becoming a greater part of the Colorado Symphony. As you reflect on the organizations that enrich your life, we encourage you to consider supporting the Colorado Symphony. Your support helps us to amplify artists as they share their light with you and the Colorado community. Thank you for joining us today and welcome to the Colorado Symphony.

Sincerely,

Director of Individual Giving & Strategic Support

WHAT IF I AM LATE?

For the comfort and enjoyment of our musicians and patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

WHEN SHOULD I CLAP?

During most Classics performances, there is a short, silent pause between each movement of a piece. You can determine how many movements there are in a piece, and how many silent pauses there will be, by looking at your program — the movements in each piece will be listed there. The applause is usually reserved for the end of the final movement of the piece, after the conductor has signaled the end of the final note with his or her baton or hand. Holding applause between movements is considered respectful of the performers' concentration and mindful of musical continuity.

WHAT IS YOUR CELL PHONE/PHOTO/ VIDEO POLICY?

We ask that you please silence your cell phones and refrain from talking or texting on them during performances. Flash photography is prohibited at all times. We ask that you please refrain from taking any photos or video during Classics or Movie at the Symphony concerts unless the conductor is off the podium. During Symphony Pops concerts you may take pictures without a flash and may record short cell phone videos. Please be courteous to your fellow concertgoers and be aware that if at any time your cell phone/camera use becomes a distraction to others, an usher may ask you to stop.

CAN I BRING FOOD OR DRINKS INTO THE CONCERT?

You are welcome to bring drinks purchased at one of the bars into all concerts. Food is not allowed in the Hall, including food purchased in the Lobby.

CAN I BRING THE KIDS?

Kids of all ages will enjoy our Family, education concerts, and many of our Symphony Pops, Holiday, and Summer concerts. All children require a ticket regardless of age, and child tickets are $10. Classics concerts tend to be between 2 and 21/2 hours long. Please consider this when deciding whether or not to bring your child. If your child is disturbing other patrons, an usher may ask you to take your child into the lobby for the remainder of the performance, without refund.

HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL CONCERT?

Program length varies, but a typical performance lasts about two hours, including one 20 minute intermission. Visit the event page on our website, or flip to the performance details in this Soundings Magazine.

WHAT IF I’M UNABLE TO ATTEND MY PERFORMANCE?

Subscribers may exchange tickets free of charge — one of many subscriber benefits! Non-subscribers may exchange for an additional fee. You may exchange tickets in person, by phone, or online for another performance within the same season. There is an additional cost if seating upgrades apply, and all exchange requests are subject to availability. You may also donate your tickets back to the Colorado Symphony and receive a donation receipt.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF A CONCERT IS CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER?

We rarely cancel a concert due to inclement weather, but when this occurs we will send a direct email notification to all ticket holders. Updates, cancelations, or changes will be posted on coloradosymphony.org and on the event page for the concert.

YOUR GIFTS AT WORK: Making A Community Impact

18 COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG STORIES OF NOTE

Music

brings people together to inspire and unite the human spirit. The Colorado Symphony believes that symphonic music must be available to everyone and that communities thrive when music is accessible to all.

When you give to the Colorado Symphony, it does more than support the music you hear from stage. It makes an impact that extends far beyond the walls of Boettcher Concert Hall, into communities, local businesses, and schools across Colorado, inspiring the next generation of music makers in our state and providing cultural experiences that enrich the lives of all Coloradans.

With an annual local economic impact of $30 million, the Colorado Symphony plays a vital role in elevating Denver’s national reputation while improving the quality of life for current and future generations.

However, the greatest impact is felt in classrooms and practice studios across Colorado, where 74% of full-time Colorado Symphony musicians currently serve as music educators or teach private lessons. As one of the state’s largest full-time arts employers, the Colorado Symphony helps to provide a strong base of support for the performing arts ecosystem.

Engaging communities in Colorado is a vital part of the Colorado Symphony’s mission as each year nearly 30,000 children, students, and adults attend education and community programs both inside Boettcher Concert Hall and around metro-Denver to learn and experience the enriching world of symphonic music. But a renewed focus on accessibility and deeper community engagement have taken Colorado Symphony education and community programs to even higher levels in recent years.

As part of the Colorado Symphony’s goal to create high impact programming and deliver mentorship and coaching opportunities to students, a new partnership brought seven Colorado Symphony musicians to Aurora Central High School this year for nearly 130 hours of engagement with their students. The program includes sectionals for both band and orchestra students and side-by-side performances with those musicians at school concerts throughout the 2022/23 school year.

19COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG

“Collaborating with the Colorado Symphony has changed the entire atmosphere of the music program at Aurora Central High School,” said Kyle Jones, Instrumental Music Teacher at Aurora Central High School. “Students are eager to learn from professional musicians and have enjoyed building relationships with them. We have more students asking to attend the Open Rehearsals and Youth Concerts than we have room for! Working with the Symphony has energized our students and provided valuable opportunities for me and my program.”

The Colorado Symphony believes the arts play a major role in building healthy, richly diverse communities and that students of all ages should have the opportunity to experience the interconnectedness that the arts provide regardless of their financial resources. The CSA has continued to have discussions with community leaders about the lack of bilingual offerings that showcase symphonic music, a need for programming that supports early-childhood education literacy efforts, and culturally relevant performances. From these conversations, the Symphony has designed several programs that create opportunities for community building.

Anythink Library Brighton is one example of a partnering organization that is seeing the benefits of bringing in symphonic programming.

STORIES OF NOTE

“It has been a joy to work with the Colorado Symphony over the past year and to see our partnership grow,” said Nickie Lundberg, a Children’s Guide at Anythink Library in Brighton. “I love watching the children’s faces when they are exposed to new types of music or are enthralled by a performance. I especially appreciate that the Symphony has been able to bring bilingual music experiences to the Brighton and Adams County community. We were able to offer free Petite Musique and Canta y Baila Conmigo concerts to our youngest community members and customers have shared with me that the Symphony has been one of their favorite library experiences. Through the Symphony’s Master Mentor program, we surprised and delighted our customers by having impromptu music performances in the library. Recently, we had Anne-Marie Hoffman here at Anythink Brighton, a violinist from the Colorado Symphony. A customer came in and heard the last few songs of the performance and was overjoyed. She said, ‘You cannot imagine what a day I had. This is exactly what I needed. This completely changed my day.’”

The Colorado Symphony continues to be an agent of social development in the community by enhancing music appreciation, providing unforgettable entertainment, and using music to touch the depths of the human spirit. But the most meaningful impact will come from connecting with the next generation who will become the artists, educators, and music enthusiasts of tomorrow.

Colorado Symphony musicians also perform annually alongside the Denver Young Artists Orchestra (DYAO), one of the leading youth orchestras in the country, which was originally formed by musicians from the then Denver Symphony Orchestra in 1977. In 2018, a strategic alliance was formed between the two organizations, which has ensured that young musicians in the DYAO have even greater access to and mentorship from the musicians of the Colorado Symphony.

21COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG

In addition to DYAO, Colorado Symphony musicians participate in many other youthbased music programs throughout Colorado including El Sistema Colorado, Front Range Youth Symphony, and Rocky Ridge Music Center.

“Whether your favorite musical genre is classical or rock, there is a craving for live symphonic music in our community among all ages and backgrounds,” said Peter Oundjian, Principal Conductor. “At the Colorado Symphony, we have the potential to be an American leader in providing musically and culturally diverse live symphonic music. Because of your support and the imagination of the Colorado Symphony, we are creating a future where the symphony is for everyone.”

Thanks in part to the generosity of patrons and donors like you, 60,000 students and teachers experienced the transformative power of live performance last season between in person and virtual Colorado Symphony program offerings. But that’s not all – you helped to create a thriving cultural ecosystem by supporting one of Colorado’s largest fulltime arts employers. The Colorado Symphony employs over 80 full-time musicians who enrich our communities by sharing their artistry on and off stage as educators, leaders, and community members.

STORIES OF NOTE

As the Colorado Symphony looks towards the future, the goal remains clear: to provide programming and experiences that allow students and the community to not only experience the live sounds of symphonic music, but to see themselves in the music, in its musicians, and in Boettcher Concert Hall. That includes additional inclusive programming featuring bilingual performances, repertoire from an array of diverse composers, and outreach efforts that extend to every school district across the state through in person performances and the distribution of virtual content. And the Colorado Symphony is capable of so much more, but we can’t without your help.

Consider a donation today and help maintain this thriving ecosystem of support. The future of live symphonic music belongs to all of us and together we can make a lasting impact on Colorado for generations to come. Your support today will allow the Colorado Symphony to provide in-person and virtual education content to schools around the state for years to come and open the doors for new and innovative future opportunities. To learn how you can get involved, contact Breanna McCaughey, Director of Community Education, at bmccaughey @coloradosymphony.org. To become a supporter of the Colorado Symphony you can contribute online or contact Cecile Forsberg-Kerr, Director of Individual and Strategic Support, at cforsbergkerr@coloradosymphony.org.

BOETTCHER CONCERT HALL INFORMATION

FOR COLORADO SYMPHONY CONCERT TICKETS AND INFORMATION: call 303.623.7876.

THE COLORADO SYMPHONY’S WEBSITE, coloradosymphony.org, provides information on all Colorado Symphony activities at Boettcher Concert Hall and other venues around Colorado including performances at Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, the Arvada Center for the Performing Arts, and more. Other venues may require the use of another ticketing source; however, you will always be directed to the official ticketing agent or source by using coloradosymphony.org/navigation.

LATE SEATING: In consideration of our musicians, guest artists, crew, staff, and your fellow patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

NO SMOKING: Boettcher Concert Hall is a smoke free venue. Any and all forms of smoking are prohibited in the venue.

NO FILMING: Audio or video recording devices, GoPros, professional cameras, or cameras with removable lenses are not allowed in the hall.

SECURITY: In furtherance of Denver Arts & Venues ongoing initiative to create a safe and secure environment for all patrons and employees of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Colorado Symphony Association is pleased to partner with the Denver Performing Arts Complex on the newlyintroduced security measures for Boettcher Concert Hall and all venues within the complex. We encourage you to arrive up to 45 minutes prior to the start of your event. This will alleviate congestion in all walk ways and entrances and will allow for proper screening. To review the full policy and prohibited items, please visit artscomplex.com.

In the event of a building emergency patrons will be notified by an announcement from the stage. Should the building need to be evacuated, please exit the nearest door, or according to instructions given from stage.

FIRST AID FACILITIES for all patrons are available. Please inquire with an usher should you need these facilities or assistance. Please report any accidents, falls, or lost items to an usher promptly.

ELEVATOR is located within the venue after passing through security and having your ticket scanned. Please follow the signs to the southeast end of the main lobby. The elevator is to the left of the entrance of Gallery 1 on the first level of the lobby.

COAT CHECK is located underneath the main lobby stairs in the hallway leading to Gallery 1.

BAR SERVICE is provided at most concerts. Concessions are managed by Centerplate. Please see the FAQ page regarding policy on food and beverage in Boettcher Concert Hall. The Colorado Symphony reserves the right to change the concessions policy at any time. The Colorado Symphony Association does not manage concessions, ordering, or realize profit from concessions.

LOST AND FOUND items should be reported promptly to the House Manager, via an usher, or directly. Lost items are kept by the usher staff until the end of the performance. After the performance items are taken to Arts & Venues Lost and Found. If attempting to claim lost property during or shortly after your performance, please see an usher. If you’ve left the hall and have a lost item, please call 720.865.4200.

THE GUILD SHOP: Located in Gallery 1 on the first floor of Boettcher Concert Hall, The Shop (as it's affectionately known) is the perfect place to pick up unique gifts, seasonal fashions, and of course recordings produced by, and of, the Colorado Symphony. The Shop is operated by a dedicated group of Symphony supporters and enthusiasts year-round.
