N BEHALF OF ALL OF US AT THE COLORADO SYMPHONY, I’d like to welcome you to our 2020/21 Season! Colorado is so fortunate to have a worldclass orchestra right here in Denver, and entering my fourth season as Music Director, I’m continually amazed and grateful for the incredible support we receive from our community. This new decade offers inspiring opportunities for us all, and to celebrate we’re bringing our full orchestra and chamber ensembles to every corner of Colorado, especially underserved areas of the state, as part of our Beethoven 2020 Initiative commemorating his 250th birthday. This celebration continues throughout the year, bringing Beethoven to over 100,000 people statewide, and culminating in a special one-night-only performance at Boettcher Concert Hall on December 16, 2020. So whether you’re in Boettcher Concert Hall or elsewhere in the state – from Grand Junction to Fort Collins or Steamboat Springs to Montrose – your Colorado Symphony will be there highlighting Beethoven’s unmatched musical brilliance. This orchestra has brought the best in live symphonic music to Colorado for nearly a century, and there’s plenty more in store for our 2020/21 Season that’s teeming with extraordinary talent and exciting repertoire. Here are a few of my personal highlights from the season: We’ll be joined by pianist Olga Kern as featured soloist on Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto during our Opening Weekend celebration. Later, we’ll perform Brahms’ A German Requiem on a program that also features Mason Bates’ Resurrexit. And we’ll cap our Classics Season along with the renowned Colorado Symphony Chorus on Mahler’s gripping Second Symphony – aptly titled “Resurrection.” But that’s just the beginning, as we’ll be featuring a host of fantastic soloists all season long, including pianists Joyce Yang and Gabriela Montero, violinists Augustin Hadelich, Karen Gomyo, and Leila Josefowicz, and cellist Joshua Roman. Our Movie at the Symphony concerts continue as we perform the scores of Disney Pixar's Coco in Concert, Disney's A Muppet Christmas Carol, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens as we screen the movies live. Of course, our holiday concert schedule is overflowing with festive fun, including A Colorado Christmas, A Night in Vienna, and after a one-year hiatus, the return of a Denver favorite, Too Hot to Handel – all part of a delightful December lineup. Our 2020/21 Season promises to be a breathtaking odyssey through some of the best music ever composed, and we can’t wait to share it with you. See you in the Hall! Sincerely,

Your Colorado Symphony and Music Director Brett Mitchell usher in the start of a spectacular new Classics Season with the highly anticipated return of Denver favorite Olga Kern as featured soloist on Beethoven’s vigorously demanding Fifth Piano Concerto. Possessing astonishing technique, glamour, and star power in equal measure, Kern is just the virtuoso to live up to the majestic “Emperor” Concerto as your Colorado Symphony continues their yearlong celebration of Beethoven in 2020. The program begins with a pair of orchestral showcases from the early 20th century beginning with OSCAR®-winner Erich Korngold’s Symphonic Overture, Op. 13 – a rollicking romp showcasing some of his familiar and award-winning feature film themes – and concluding with Strauss’ nostalgic look back at 19th century waltzes in the Suite from Der Rosenkavalier. This is an opening weekend spectacular that is sure to delight.
Latin Beats: Sonidos de las Américas
FREE CONCERT
The Mexican Cultural Center, with the Colorado Symphony, present the fourth annual Latin Beats: Sonidos de las Américas. This unique, free concert celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month and Latin culture’s influence on sound in the Americas, showcasing a fusion of traditional, classical, and contemporary music augmented by the Colorado Symphony’s soaring orchestrations. In partnership with the Mexican Cultural Center and Denver Arts & Venues, this event is a free concert. Tickets for this performance are available two weeks prior to the event online or in-person at the Colorado Symphony Box Office.

Love the classic sounds of Frankie Valli, The Drifters, and The Del Vikings? Ever wonder what Maroon 5 would sound like if they had lived in the Doo-Wop era? The Doo-Wop Project traces the evolution of Doo-Wop from the classic sound of five guys singing tight harmonies on a street corner to the biggest hits on the radio today. In their epic shows Doo-Wop Project takes audiences on a journey from foundational tunes of groups like The Crests, The Belmonts, and The Flamingos through their influences on the sounds of Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, and The Four Seasons all the way to Doo-Wopified versions of modern musicians like Michael Jackson, Jason Mraz, and Maroon 5. Featuring stars of Broadway’s smash hits Jersey Boys and Motown: The Musical, the Doo-Wop Project brings unparalleled authenticity of sound and vocal excellence to recreate – and in some cases entirely reimagine – some of the greatest music in American pop and rock history!

The lives of Edward Elgar and Dimitri Shostakovich were irrevocably altered by their respective sociopolitical climates, and these works stand as true signposts of those tumultuous times. Elgar’s Cello Concerto was his last major work for orchestra, and his most confessional, as feelings of depression, sorrow, and anguish poured forth following the horrors of the Great War and the destruction of the world he had known. Cellist Joshua Roman – a star on the rise – makes his triumphant return to Denver, lending rich tone and dark timbre to a work dominated by disillusionment and a sense of suffering that at times cries out against life, yet more often speaks in quiet anguish. Meanwhile, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, which he called “a response to my critics,” sprang forth during a time of tremendous oppression and conflict leaving listeners to wonder whether the piece is a triumphant work of patriotism or a hidden note of subversion. The performance begins with a beautiful lead in from Kevin Puts in “...this noble company”, an American Pomp and Circumstance inspired by Elgar’s recognizable piece by the same name. This processional for orchestra provides a stunning entry point for a performance you won’t want to miss.

Resident Conductor Christopher Dragon leads a lively performance brimming with music as a celebration of humanity. Rossini’s Overture from William Tell features one of the most famous musical passages of all time, while dancers from Wonderbound perform onstage as your Colorado Symphony presents excerpts from Beethoven’s Creatures of Prometheus. Schumann’s Symphony No. 1, dubbed “Spring,” conjures up the longing for new growth and renewal. For Schumann, spring was a feeling, a rapturous optimism, a lust for life, writing, “I wrote the symphony in that rush of spring which carries a man away even in his old age, and comes over him anew every year” – a fitting finale to an enrapturing performance of song and dance.

Boys have been singing at the Viennese court since the 14th century, and in 1498 – more than half a millennium ago – Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I moved his court and his court musicians to Vienna. Historians have settled on 1498 as the foundation date of the Vienna Chapel Imperial (Hofmusikkapelle) and thus the Vienna Boys Choir. Until 1918, the choir sang exclusively for the imperial court, at mass, concerts, private functions, and on state occasions. This performance does not feature the Colorado Symphony.

Pianist Joyce Yang, whose playing was dubbed “vivid and beautiful” by The New York Times, makes her much-anticipated return to Boettcher Concert Hall as featured soloist on Rachmaninoff ’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini while Tchaikovsky’s romantic “Little Russian” Symphony incorporates variations of three Ukrainian folk songs in an unreservedly joyous finale, interpreted and conducted by Music Director Brett Mitchell.

The Muppets perform the classic Dickens holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine). Other Muppets – Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear, and Sam the Eagle – weave in and out of the story, while Scrooge receives visits from spirits of three Christmases – past, present, and future. They show him the error of his self-serving ways, but the miserable old man seems to be past any hope of redemption and happiness. Despite personal struggle, James released over two dozen albums throughout her career, receiving over 30 awards including six GRAMMY® Awards, seventeen Blues Music Awards, inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and GRAMMY® Hall of Fame, and ranking in Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. James’ tenacity throughout the decades propelled her to the ranks of the musical elite. Celebrate the life and unmatched brilliance of a musical icon during this season’s annual weekend of All Beethoven repertoire. One of America’s emerging conductors, Joseph Young brings his energetic dynamism to the podium on Beethoven’s breathtaking Fifth Symphony – a fundamental pillar of the symphonic canon which famously begins with the ominous four-note motif signifying “fate knocking at the door.” The performance opens with Beethoven’s powerful and expressive Egmont, a set of incidental music pieces for Goethe’s play of the same name, wherein the composer exalts the heroic sacrifice of Lamoral, Count of Egmont, who was condemned to death after his valiant stand against oppression. This is a bombastic tour through Beethoven’s heroic middle period as the Beethoven 2020 celebration nears its finale.

Stravinsky’s primal Rite of Spring is renowned for inciting a riot at its 1913 Paris debut. The causes are still debated – was it the eccentric asymmetry of the music or Nijinsky’s shocking choreography – and the escalation often exaggerated (objects may have been thrown at the musicians, and a bald man’s head was allegedly drummed upon). Nonetheless, this must-see masterwork radically changed 20th century composition.

The Berlin Philharmonic Piano Quartet, one of the few existing ensembles of that instrumentation, has existed as a Berlin Philharmonic chamber music ensemble since 1985. This highly praised group is a collaboration between three awardwinning permanent members of the Berliner Philharmoniker: violist Matthew Hunter, cellist Knut Weber, and violinist Luis Esnaola, along with the renowned concert pianist Markus Groh. This outstanding ensemble is committed to not only representing the standard repertoire of classical, romantic, and modern pieces, but also finding undiscovered masterpieces of the literature that encompasses over 400 works. This presentation will have a new seating arrangement with audience members in the Parquet, flipping the traditional Boettcher Concert Hall experience for an exciting evening of music! This presentation is without the full orchestra.

Beethoven’s “Pastorale” Symphony – originally dubbed “recollections of life in the country” – is the composer’s ultimate homage to the great outdoors, brimming with color and texture that seem accessible to all the senses as it instantly transports you to the Viennese countryside. One of the most sought-after conductors of his generation, Markus Stenz lends his incredible talent to Beethoven’s brilliant programmatic projection of nature. The first half features superstar violinist Leila Josefowicz in her return to Boettcher Concert Hall as featured soloist on John Adams’ powerful Scheherazade.2 – a piece she debuted with the New York Philharmonic in 2015. In this poignant adaptation of the Arabian Nights tale which nods to Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite Scheherazade, Adams casts the violin as a modern-day Scheherazade – the woman who remains fearless in the face of immense cruelty. This is an illuminating performance that will resonate with all audiences.

Unlike other Requiem Masses, Brahms’ A German Requiem is not primarily a Mass for the dead. Instead, it is intended as comfort and solace for those left behind, for the living who feel the pain and mourn the death of others. Brahms further differentiates his Requiem by setting excerpts from the Lutheran Bible and apocrypha in German instead of the Catholic, Latin text used by Mozart, Verdi, and Berlioz. The Colorado Symphony Chorus lends their distinguished voice to this stunningly beautiful masterpiece which stands as one of the greatest choral works ever composed. Just as A German Requiem confronts life as much as it does death, Mason Bates’ Resurrexit musically details the resurrection story, exploring “...a biblical narrative full of mystery and the supernatural.” The program begins with Wagner’s “Good Friday Music” from his last work, Parsifal – a divine opener to a program celebrating life conducted by Music Director Brett Mitchell.

Join Music Director Brett Mitchell and your Colorado Symphony for an artful program unified by elements of dance. Stirring violinist Stefan Jackiw – called “...one of the most insightful violinists of his generation” by The Boston Globe – lends his athletic virtuosity to Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto which features a lively and dance-like final movement. Bookending the concerto are a pair of dances with distinctive flair, beginning with Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales, a set of seven Schubert-inspired waltzes full of lyrical beauty, lilting and distinctive Viennese rhythm, and an entire gamut of color and feeling. Stravinsky’s ballet Petrushka uses rhythm and harmony to create a dramatic atmosphere quivering with energy, while incorporating melodies from Russian folk songs and the French tune “Elle avait un’ jambe en bois” – a frolicking finale to an evening of musical euphoria. Experience a new frontier in music as Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony combines with the melodies and lyrics of Coldplay to produce a perfect modern pairing. Kindred spirits through bouts of depression and battles with self-doubt, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky nonetheless persevered to create many of the masterworks of the symphonic canon. With the help of hypnosis, Rachmaninoff overcame his crippling depression to compose his Second Piano Concerto – a romantic tour de force that progresses from somber introspection to triumphant celebration, reflecting his own journey out of depression. Soloist Simon Trpčeski is just the expressive virtuoso to bring this masterpiece to life. Tchaikovsky similarly battled uncertainty of his own following the unveiling of his Fifth Symphony, but its grandeur and majesty have stood the test of time and it is now recognized as one of his greatest works. Up-and-coming conductor Nicholas Carter, Music Director of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, leads your Colorado Symphony through all three works on the program, opening with Fauré’s Pavane – a stunning take on 16th century Spanish court dances – and a delightful introduction to an evening of symphonic exuberance.

This community concert introduces the instruments of the orchestra to young children. Performed by a 16-piece chamber orchestra and narrator, this interactive program includes the musical telling of an age-appropriate story, a sing-a-long, and a live dance-a-long, too!

Women of Note is a group of highly engaged symphony lovers who appreciate listening to and learning about musicians and their respective instrument throughout the year. Members enjoy four luncheons a season, which include a recital and a Q&A session from various Colorado Symphony musicians at each event. The Colorado Symphony is an iconic cultural treasure within Colorado’s performing arts community. We are the only resident, full-time, professional orchestra in the state and serve as a linchpin of the cultural performing arts infrastructure of Colorado. Today, just as Denver and Colorado continue to flourish, so too does the Symphony. In order to continue to grow and flourish, the Colorado Symphony is committed to building a financial infrastructure that enhances its long-term stability. The best-managed midsized and large orchestras have endowments equal to at least four times their annual operating budgets which provide a predictable and sustainable source of revenues each year to build on. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, for example, has a $25 million annual budget and a $95 million endowment; the Boston Symphony Orchestra has a $90 million annual operating budget and a $450 million endowment. Our immediate goal is to build our endowment to at least $50 million over the next few years and with your help we can build a lasting legacy for symphonic music in Colorado.
