WELCOME TO YOUR UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Thank you for taking a moment to explore the University Center for the Arts’ spring 2016 performance and exhibition guide, in which you will find an astonishing variety of events…all of which enhance the mission of the School of Music, Theatre and Dance at Colorado State University. At CSU, we provide students with the opportunity to experience the full scope of live performance elements in the magnificent University Center for the Arts (UCA).

Whether it is on stage, behind the scenes, as audience members, or in master classes with guest artists, CSU students are exposed to the inherent cultural diversity that makes the visual and performing arts an integral part of a well-rounded college experience.

Diversity in programming also enhances the audience experience at the UCA, and I am confident that the spring 2016 array of performances, guest lectures, and exhibitions will provide a seemingly bottomless well of inspiration for all. As you peruse the guide, I encourage you to consider attending at least one event that may seem innovative or unusual… take a leap on the wild side! Opportunities to try something new include Boy (a play by Diana Son), which runs from Feb. 5–17; It Could Be Anything New Music Ensemble on Sunday, Feb. 21 and Sunday, April 17; Reefer Madness, The Musical, which runs from April 20 – May 6; and the annual Spring Dance Concert, which is presented April 8, 9, 15, and 16 and features the cutting-edge work of guest choreographer Judy Bejarano.

More traditional, but certainly not less innovative in its time is The Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, presented by the Ralph Opera Center March 31 – April 3. Another great opportunity to hear CSU students at their finest will be the annual Concerto Competition Finals on Feb. 10, when four outstanding CSU music students perform with the University Symphony Orchestra. In addition to these highlights, throughout the semester CSU students are front and center on UCA stages performing a highly eclectic body of work, including original compositions

by CSU faculty and students, as well as music by Leonard Bernstein, Franz Schubert, Christopher Rouse, George Gershwin, John Cage, Igor Stravinsky, Hyo-woon Woo, and Astor Piazzolla.

The Classical Convergence Series, co-presented by CSU and the Lincoln Center, features the incredible duo of Igudesman & Joo, two classical musicians who incorporate comedy, popular culture, and theatre into a unique and entertaining evening. Tickets for this one will go fast… so act soon! In addition to the Classical Convergence Series, the spring season involves many other guest artist and CSU faculty concerts as well as the annual Rocky Mountain Saxophone Summit Potpourri Concert and the CSU Alumni Dance Concert.

Flex passes may not be used for the Classical Convergence Series, and those tickets are available through the Lincoln Center at www.lctix.com.

Youth Ticket Program: we encourage attendance of youth and families by offering a $1 ticket for youth (under 18).

Free Recitals: Guest Artist recitals, vocal and instrumental area recitals, student recitals, and select ensemble concerts are FREE and open to the public; look for events marked FREE throughout this guide. Visit MUSIC.colostate.edu for the student recital schedule. In the event of a cancellation, notifications will be posted online.

CSU STUDENT TICKET INFORMATION RAMCard is your ticket to the UCA! Full-fee paying students (enrolled in six or more credits) can receive one (1) no-charge ticket to all music, theatre, and dance department events at the UCA. Tickets are available online, by phone, or in in-person at the UCA Ticket Office, both in advance or at-the-door. A valid RAMCard must be presented for ticket redemption, and tickets are not transferable. Tickets are limited to one (1) per student for each performance/series of performances (i.e. multiple theatre or dance performances of the same show). Space is limited and available on a first come, first served basis. Excludes Classical Convergence and community produced events.

COMMITMENT TO CAMPUS / FREE TICKETS FOR CSU EMPLOYEES Through the University’s Commitment to Campus initiative, all CSU faculty and staff can receive one pair of free tickets, each academic year, to School of Music, Theatre and Dance performances at the University Center for the Arts. Tickets are available online, by phone, or 3

in-person at the UCA Ticket Office; advance reservations recommended. A valid CSU faculty-staff ID (full-time, part-time, and adjuncts) must be presented for ticket redemption. PURCHASE POLICY All sales are final. No refunds or exchanges. Seating after the start of any performance is at the discretion of the house manager. Photography and recording of performances are strictly prohibited. Food and beverages prohibited in all theatres. If the performance is disturbed, parents with disruptive children may be asked to excuse themselves without refund.

VENUES AND PARKING The University Center for the Arts (UCA) is located at 1400 Remington Street, Fort Collins. The center houses the Griffin Concert Hall, University Theatre, University Dance Theatre, Organ Recital Hall, Studio Theatre, University Art Museum, and the Avenir Museum of Design and Merchandising. The Minguet Quartet with Andreas Klein, Piano Thursday, January 28, 2016, 7:30 p.m. Griffin Concert Hall, UCA The Minguet Quartet is among one of the most well-received string quartets internationally, and performs at major concert venues worldwide. The quartet focuses on the Classical and Romantic repertoires, as well as contemporary music, and promotes the latter by premiering numerous compositions of our own times. They team up with distinguished German pianist, Andreas Klein, for a truly incredible performance.

Mendelssohn Trio Monday, February 1, 7:30 p.m., Organ Recital Hall, UCA The Trio (Erik Peterson, violin; Barbara Thiem, cello; Theodor Lichtmann, piano) was formed in 1988 and is named for Thiem’s great grandfather, Franz von Mendelssohn, a nephew of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and an important supporter of artists and musicians in the Berlin of the early 20th century. The program features works by Ernest Bloch, Josef Suk, and Franz Schubert.

University Symphony Orchestra Concert Concerto Competition Finals Wednesday, February 10, 7:30 p.m., Griffin Concert Hall, UCA The University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Maestro Wes Kenney, hosts the 2015-2016 Concerto Competition Finals featuring CSU’s finest soloists. This year’s ‘star search’ finalists are: Landon Adams and Ben Justis, percussion, performing Avner Dorman’s Spices, Perfumes, Toxins! (Spices); Paola Zamario, violin, performing Aram Khachaturian’s Concerto for Violin (Mvt. 1); and Rachelle Crowell, flute, performing Christopher Rouse’s Flute Concerto. These soloists, chosen through audition for the annual highly competitive competition, compete for monetary awards. In addition to the solo showcase pieces, the orchestra performs George Gershwin’s Catfish Row.

Singer of the Year / FREE Saturday, February 27, 7:30 p.m., Organ Recital Hall, UCA This popular annual competition features CSU’s top undergraduate vocal students competing for over $50,000 in scholarship monies including the top Singer of the Year Award, the Charles and Reta Ralph Undergraduate Scholarship, the Most Improved Award, and the James McDonald Memorial Scholarship. The awards are based on the students’ vocal performance and on progress toward their degree.

Harp Ensemble Concert Wednesday, March 2, 7:30 p.m., Organ Recital Hall, UCA The concert features a new arrangement of Por Una Cabeza for harp ensemble by Professor Rachel Ellins, as well as student arrangements including Katie Miksch’s arrangement of music from the video game Halo and Rachel Franklin’s arrangement of Arwen’s Vigil by The Piano Guys. The concert also includes a new work entitled The Gypsy in My Soul by Steven Rosenhaus, The Dyades by Bernard Andres, Spanish Dance No. 1 by Enrique Granados, and The Dances Sacred and Profane by Claude Debussy featuring senior performance major, Sara Schmidt.

Concert Choir and Chamber Choir Concert Friday, March 4, 7:30 p.m., Griffin Concert Hall, UCA The Concert Choir, directed by Dr. Ryan Olsen, performs a variety of music written to showcase women’s voices including Brahms’ Op. 11: four songs for women’s choir, two horns, and harp, and select movements from “Anne Frank: A Living Voice” by Linda Tutas Haugen. The Chamber Choir, directed by Dr. James Kim, performs sacred works by international composers including a double choir motet, “Faire is the Heaven” by William Harris, “Singet dem Herrn” by Hugo Distler, and “Gloria Cum Sancto Spiritu” by a female Korean composer, Hyo-woon Woo. In addition, a selection of American spirituals arranged by Moses Hogan and Jack Halloran are also on the program.

Concert Orchestra with Concert Choir Concert / FREE Remembrance With guest Margaret Miller, Viola Saturday, March 5, 2 p.m., Griffin Concert Hall, UCA The choir and orchestra, directed by Dr. Ryan Olsen, combine to perform “Anne Frank: A Living Voice” by Linda Tutas Haugen. This choral song cycle for women’s choir and strings traces the emotional journey Anne Frank underwent as she tried to comprehend the events of the Holocaust during World War II. Using Frank’s own words, the piece goes through a range of emotions from fear, confusion, heartbreak, hope, and even the optimism and joy of a young adolescent. Often performed with a string quartet, this is the first time that the piece will be performed with a chamber string orchestra. Viola Professor Margaret Miller joins the orchestra, directed by Leslie Stewart, for Hindemith’s Trauermusik.

Concert Band Concert / FREE Sunday, March 6, 7:30 p.m., Griffin Concert Hall, UCA The 100-member ensemble, directed by Dr. Erik Johnson, performs standard American concert band literature. This concert features music inspired by nature and the outdoors, with works by contemporary American composers including John Mackey, Frank Ticheli, and Julie Giroux.

Including music by Astor Piazzolla, Herbert L. Clarke, Robert Suderberg, and Colorado composers James David and Dan Watt, the program ranges from the modern (a brand-new composition by David featuring the trombone accompanying itself with a laptoptop), to the traditional (a fun Victorian duo for trumpet and trombone), to the cinematic (Watt’s tour-de-force “Cerberus” for three trombones).

This concert represents artistry, passion, and excitement at CSU with many original works by faculty, students, and special guests in a variety of styles of classical and contemporary dance.

The Spring 2016 Guest Faculty Choreographer is Judy Bejarano, artistic director of IMPACT Dance Company.

Judy Bejarano began creating work under the name of IMPACT Dance in 1995, and has since received over a dozen grants and awards for outstanding quality and innovation in the field. A member of the CSU dance faculty, her work explores “life issues” and uses personal narrative to explore universal experience. Topics for IMPACT projects have included immigration, body image, identity, grief, loss, and finding home. Bejarano also enjoys creating quirky and humorous work, examining the human experience through movement and spoken word. With work described as “…existing in the poignant space where comedy and tragedy intersect,” Bejarano is often commissioned to teach and set choreography regionally and nationally, and she continues a rich relationship with performances and workshops for Pathways Hospice that began in 2005.

In this workshopped production of Diana Son’s Boy, a bright cartoon of her newest play, an “everyman” couple conspires at the birth of their fourth daughter to announce they finally have a son, and they raise the baby as a boy. They call her Boy. This seems to work, until Boy begins to develop characteristics of Girl. Son, the Korean-American playwright of Stop Kiss and Satellites, writes with a striking, storybook tone, which runs like a backbone through the play. The play, now in a draft that, until now has been unproduced, is funny, touching, and explores gender like it has never been explored before.

The University Art Museum will be closed during the spring and summer of 2016 to complete our expansion and the renovation of existing exhibition spaces. When the museum re-opens in the late summer/early fall of 2016, visitors will find five new galleries, a “living room/learning center” that will serve as a flexible space for reading and research, workshops, classes and receptions, and expanded visitor amenities.

Opening exhibitions will feature the new Hartford-Tandstad collection, primarily European artworks from the late Renaissance through the 19th century; highlights from our extensive African art and Native American art collections; and a solo exhibition by noted contemporary photographer Patrick Nagatani.

The museum is also developing a sculpture garden. Visible from inside the new expansion, the sculpture garden will continue to grow and is an ideal place to study, have lunch, and enjoy art in the outdoors.

March 10 – Mr. Blackwell: Artist of Subtle Witchery You’ve seen both the elegant and the provocative couture apparel on exhibition in the Richard Blackwell Gallery at the Avenir, and you know there must have been quite a creative and self-promoting personality behind the Hollywood name and the designer label “Mr. Blackwell.” Join us for a fascinating evening with long-time former Avenir Museum Curator Linda Carlson, who knew Mr. Blackwell personally. Linda will share reminiscences of their long friendship and collaboration, which has been such an enduring and valuable association for the Avenir Museum and Colorado State University.

April 7 – The Power of Maya Women’s Artistry Textile artist Mary Anne Wise is founder and current vice president of Multicolores Guatemala, the Maya Women’s Rug Hooking Cooperative established in Sept. 2013, whose work is on exhibition in the Avenir Gallery in the UCA. She will talk about the Cooperative as a vital endeavor based on Maya textile and cultural history, which also creates artistic and economic opportunity for women from the highlands of Guatemala. Mary Anne has been featured in numerous magazines and publications, including Fiber Arts and American Craft.

NOTE: Mary Anne Wise’s April 7 evening lecture is part of a four-day residency experience at the Avenir Museum of Design and Merchandising by members of Multicolores Guatemala, including a registration-only weekend workshop on April 9-10 where the artists from Guatemala will teach you to make your own hooked rug using recycled clothing. May 19 – Sew Many Pieces, 3000 and Counting Do you marvel at the minute piecework and hand quilting done by seamstress Lucile Hawks in the Avenir’s current exhibition Tiny Bits and Pieces? Join us for this exceptional evening with Jeananne Wright of Longmont, Colo., who will be here with 25 rare quilts from her own collection — each constructed of more than 3,000 pieces — to talk about quilt history and the incredible stories behind some of these creations. Jeananne is an internationally known quilt historian, lecturer, and certified quilt appraiser who has given over 350 quilt programs since 1996. She has one of the largest antique quilt collections in the country and generously shares them with her audiences.

The exhibition Form/Phenomenon pairs two artists working with ceramics; the ephemeral installations of Linda Swanson with the minimal vessels of Whitney Lowe.

Lowe, originally trained as a graphic designer, held a prominent position with the advertising firm Weiden and Kennedy, is now in his second career as a ceramist. His vessels emerge from this training and a love of Modernist architecture and design. His work is complex and understated and his forms reveal a sophisticated mind at work. While simple at first glance, careful study uncovers historical quotations and material play.

Swanson began her career as a potter. As a student she lived in Japan and was inspired by the understated aesthetics of contemporary Japanese pottery. As she continued her study at Cal State Long Beach, her pots became increasingly reductive. She was also interested in researching Scandinavian Modernism and studied in Iceland where the landscape exerted a deep and lasting influence. Her work made a fundamental shift to installations made from unfired clay materials and porcelain “disks” finished with the complex phenomenon of crystalline glaze.

Both artists employ a rigorous formal language that include rules and systems to inform or guide compositional decisions, their work diverges in its approach to ceramics itself, as either pots, fundamentally permanent and connected to human culture or as material, dynamic and continually in flux, fundamentally of the earth. This exhibition pairs two artists working with ceramics in ways that both intersect and diverge, illuminating both a shared sensibility and the range and expressive potential of the material itself.
