PARTY STYLE TRENDS

TIME TO PARTY!

Welcome to our annual Confetti Issue. It’s always a labor of love for our entire team—filled with gorgeous weddings, exquisite floral designs, elegant place settings, lively entertainment, delectable dishes and all the details that make your event one for the books. Just seeing so many artists create such vivid gatherings brings a huge smile to my face and inspires me to up my own entertaining game.

We caught up with event designers, caterers, wedding planners, florists and everyone in between to bring you unique styles and looks to remember, and we’re not just talking about weddings. Think intimate dinner parties, family gatherings, baby showers and galas—it’s all about the details, so just wait until you see what we’ve discovered!

We also spoke with a local woman who creates luxury letterpress invitations that are works of art, as well as a mom and daughter duo who make upscale linen wedding planners and journals. They are simply gorgeous.

Beyond events, summer in Colorado is all about the great outdoors. In talking with expert landscape designers and gardeners, their sage advice on maximizing outdoor spaces inspires me to be more creative. Think meditation and pollinator gardens, cold plunges and even pickleball courts. If you’re short on outdoor space, these experts say container gardens can add beauty and offer a connection to nature.

One thing I love about summer is taking time to relax with friends and family, and what makes it even better is a summery drink. Don’t miss our roundup of some local libations to enjoy this season.

With lots to celebrate, I hope this issue makes you want to plan a party and spread some joy! Whether an over-the-top event or a casual summertime party, here’s to making the most of this gorgeous time of year.

BUTTERFLY PAVILION Shining a light on nonpro ts making an impact

Butterfy Pavilion has been part of the Colorado community since 1995, and is the frst Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited, stand-alone, nonproft invertebrate zoo in the world. It is a leader in invertebrate research, conservation and education, which includes global conservation eforts to help ensure that invertebrates are protected for the future.

Invertebrates exist on every continent and in every ocean, making up 97 percent of all animal species on Earth. Tese tiny giants pollinate our crops, recycle waste and decompose dead material, as well as build healthy soil and improve water quality. Tey also make nutrients available to plants, control pest populations and protect harvests. According to a recent pollinator health study, the contribution of pollinators is a half-trillion dollars globally, and in Colorado, about $3 billion per year primarily from the growth and sale of peaches and other tree crops, as well as beans, peas and sunfowers.

Habitat loss and climate change threaten invertebrates, essential for every ecosystem. Butterfy Pavilion and Colorado State University partner to advance entomology, conservation and management of invertebrates. Tey also provide opportunities for aspiring professionals and aim to raise public awareness and support for invertebrate conservation.

“Invertebrates are foundational to entire ecosystems, and yet we’re experiencing a global biodiversity crisis brought on by an insect apocalypse,” says Richard P. Reading, Butterfy Pavilion’s vice president of science and conservation. “We don’t have a basic understanding of invertebrates overall, let alone how to conserve them. Trough our partnership with three of CSU’s colleges—Agricultural Sciences, Natural Sciences and the Warner College of Natural Resources—we can increase research, conservation and management of invertebrate species; engage and provide opportunities for aspiring biologists,

ecologists, agriculturalists and conservationists working globally; and connect that work to the public, creating more awareness and support for invertebrates.”

Tere are ways the public can help protect invertebrates as well. Te Urban Prairies Project aims to improve the ecological health of urban and suburban open spaces along the Front Range by restoring native grasses that support local pollinators. People can attend training classes to become a restoration master volunteer to help habitat conservation for pollinators and other wildlife.

Tis year, the UPP will be doing hands-on restoration projects, data collection and community outreach with open-space teams in Aurora, Brighton, Broomfeld, Greeley, Lafayette, Tornton, Superior and Westminster.

A long-term community science project, Colorado Butterfy Monitoring Network (CBMN), is another way to get involved. Since 2013, CBMN volunteers have recorded butterfies in open spaces and parks multiple times per season, gathering essential data that land managers can use when making conservation decisions.

“It’s a fantastic chance to get outdoors and learn about butterfies, while having a positive impact on conservation in Colorado,” says Shiran Hershcovich, lepidopterist manager at Butterfy Pavilion. “Knowing which butterfies are active in our state gives us important information about the health of our local ecosystems.”

Finally, everyone is invited to Butterfy Pavilion’s Pollinator Palooza Festival on June 29, which will include live music, a pollinator’s market, beer garden, face painting, nature walks and gardening demonstrations.

Community members are also encouraged to purchase tickets for Butterfy Pavilion’s annual Butterfy Ball Colorado to be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Omni Interlocken Hotel in Broomfeld—which has sold out the past two years. Check the website for ticket availability. •

JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE OF COLORADO

Founded 152 years ago, Jewish Family Service is a nonproft human services organization that serves anyone in need regardless of their circumstances or religious beliefs. Te agency currently ofers more than 30 programs and services, from food security to housing stability; mental health counseling; aging care; employment support; refugee resettlement; chaplaincy and Jewish life; disability services; and aeroponic farming.

Tere’s not a lot that JFS does not help with, and its holistic approach to assessing various needs strengthens families and communities, helping everyone to reach their full potential. Although it seems an overwhelming task, JFS is up to the challenge, providing 145,141 services to 32,338 clients across multiple programs in 2023.

According to a 2021 Hunger Free Colorado Survey, 33% of Coloradans lack reliable access to nutritious food, and 16% of the state’s children are not getting adequate nutrition due to fnancial constraints. Tat has lasting health efects and can lead to malnutrition, vitamin defciencies, chronic diseases and more.

Enter the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Food Pantry and Mobile Food & Hygiene Pantry, which assists individuals and families facing hunger and food insecurity. Linda P. Foster, JFS president and CEO, shares, “For some, the pantry helps in emergency situations; for others, it provides supplemental food to make ends meet without sacrifcing a family’s health and well-being.”

Te pantry provides shelf-stable food as well as fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy products, frozen protein and breads. Baby food, infant formula, diapers, toiletries and personal hygiene items are also available.

Pre-pandemic, the pantry provided food assistance to 40 to 45 households per day; it now serves more than 150 households daily. From July 2023 through January 2024, it served more than 15,000 households, feeding nearly 40,000 people.

Another area that the JFS can help with is employment services. A variety of free virtual and in-person workshops, training and one-on-one support is ofered to help people re-enter the workforce.

“Te classes we ofer on customer service, AutoCAD and digital literacy can really make an impact and help people gain the skills, confdence and education to land a job,” says Foster. Trough career coaching and its job search accelerator, JFS is dedicated to helping people obtain meaningful jobs that can change lives. Te team also works to fnd jobs for resettled refugees.

Mental health services are another cornerstone of JFS. “Everyone deserves access to afordable mental health care,” says Foster.

JFS places therapists in schools throughout the Denver metro area to provide free mental health services to students and their families through the KidSuccess program. Te therapists promote a positive, inclusive school culture for students that fosters achievement, high self-esteem, resiliency and personal responsibility.

Additionally, JFS provides therapy on an outpatient basis to refugee individuals and families who are adjusting to life in Colorado. Skilled, culturally competent psychotherapists utilize trained medical interpreters to promote healthy work, school and family relationships. Tey also provide trauma-informed therapy.

You can support the life-changing work of Jewish Family Service through volunteering, attending a fundraiser or simply spreading the word about the vast ways JFS helps our community. •

THE WILD ANIMAL SANCTUARY

On 1,214 acres of rural land in eastern Colorado, near Keenesburg, Te Wild Animal Sanctuary is home to more than 500 large carnivores roaming the rolling grasslands with the picturesque Rocky Mountains in the distance.

Established in 1980, TWAS is the oldest and largest nonproft carnivore sanctuary in the world. Te state- and federally-licensed zoological facility provides a safe haven for wild animals saved from abusive or illegal situations or that were abandoned and lef to die. Residents include tigers, African lions, black bears, grizzly bears, mountain lions, leopards, wolves, hyenas, African servals, bobcats, foxes, lynx, coyotes, coatis, kangaroos and wallabies, raccoons, ostriches and emus, camels, alpacas, yaks, horses and donkeys, as well as rescued dogs and cats.

“Most of our animals were the pets of private citizens but were confscated by law enforcement ofcials for being in illegal or abusive situations,” says Austin Hill, public relations director at TWAS. “Others were surplus animals from zoos and other wildlife facilities that were facing euthanasia due to over-breeding, overcrowding or closure due to inadequate fnances. We are basically the only hope for these animals.”

Pat Craig, the founder of TWAS, didn’t start out wanting to rescue carnivores. In fact, he was aiming to get a degree in business when a friend who worked at a zoo invited him to a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility. He learned about surplus animals, along with the private ownership of exotic carnivores around the globe, and was so moved that he started thinking of ways to rescue these captivity-born carnivores with nowhere else to go.

Tat same goal is refected in today’s mission: to give these animals a life of dignity and respect. Te wide-open space of the large-acreage habitats at TWAS ofers plenty of freedom. Te animals are given exceptional diets and proper veterinary care for as long as they live.

“Our facilities are some of the most state-of-the-art in the nation, with more than 120 species-specifc habitats ranging greatly in size,” says Hill. “Tey ofer unprecedented freedom and more natural living spaces, and all of our large-acreage habitats have unique underground dens that are spacious, comfortable and maintain a constant temperature of about 60 degrees all year long.”

Te Education Center at the Keenesburg location ofers numerous videos about the rescued animals and the captive wildlife crisis, along with showing how habitats and shelters are constructed, how the animals are fed,

and so much more. During the months when the bears are active, approximately 100,000 pounds of food are processed each week; when the bears are in hibernation, that decreases to about 60,000 pounds weekly for all the carnivores.

Beyond TWAS, Craig has expanded his ability to help animals in need with Te Wild Animal Refuge (TWAR)—a 9,752-acre property in southern Colorado near Springfeld. Tis facility, which is not open to the public, hosts rescued animals in amazingly natural habitats that range from 5 acres to 300 acres.

Additionally, Craig has extended his organization outside of Colorado. Te Wild Animal Sanctuary-Texas (TWAS-Texas) is a 41-acre property that is home to 70plus lions, tigers, bears, wolves and other rescued captive wildlife. Tis facility also is not open to the public and features numerous 3- to 5-acre natural habitats.

Te Wild Animal Sanctuary’s newest addition, Te Wild Horse Refuge (TWHR) in Craig, was acquired in early January 2023 and ofers 22,450 acres created entirely for rescued wild mustangs that were taken from BLM Herd Management Areas within Colorado. Te horses living

on this special property are now protected and have regained the freedom and independence they had prior to government interference.

“Te Wild Animal Sanctuary is entirely a 501(c)(3) nonproft organization, and every aspect of funding is provided by donations from supporters all over the world— from one-time donations, pledges, estate planning, and even through social media,” says Hill. “Our goal is to continue rescuing animals in need from all around the globe and to continue providing them with world-class new homes . . . and to widen the education on the captive wildlife crisis to hopefully build toward a time where sanctuaries are not needed.”

Tere are many ways to help support these goals, such as the Summer Safari Dinners, which are hosted May through September at TWAS. Guests can talk with sanctuary staf, enjoy a sumptuous catered dinner, and witness the lions and bears in their natural element—a truly unique experience. •

DESIGNER-FRIENDLY SUNSHINE

Seasonal splurges and year-round décor

Story Julie Bielenberg Photo courtesy of Birdsall

No matter the temperature or the weather, Coloradans love their outdoor environments. Designers are following lifestyle trends with more plants; exotic-inspired, water-friendly landscapes; and pops of bright colors in garden containers

CONTAINER PLANTS

“Come end of spring, beginning of summer, we here in Colorado are ready for some life and color to our outdoor spaces,” says Erin Robbins, owner of Petal & Pots by Erin. “Te easiest and quickest way to achieve this is to pop in some vibrant greens and colorful annuals to your containers, window boxes and small garden beds. Evergreen plants and ornamental grasses are vibrant and super-low maintenance. Annuals such as begonias, petunias, dahlias, geraniums, cosmos and impatiens are some of my staples for summer containers, and all come in a variety of colors. Add a little sweet potato vine or ivy vine to trail over.”

BALCONY BLOOMS AND HANGING PLANTS

“Te Chelsea Flower Show is leading the way with a balcony and container gardens,” shares Annie Huston, owner of Birdsall. “Many of the gardens highlight the benefts of immersing oneself in nature, as well as water conservation and plants that can cope with changing and challenging weather conditions, which resonates with our customers.” Huston also sugests taking inspiration from exquisite Parisian terraces and balconies, for which French doors were designed, and make the most of any exposure to sun and fresh air.

Get creative and try hanging baskets that work as privacy aides as well as additional greenery in a window or on a terrace. “Hanging plants are making a huge comeback, whether indoors or outdoors. A classic is a spider plant, with its dozens of runners or spiderettes nestled in a macramé hanger; it recalls the midcentury style in all its glory,” laughs Huston.

“I love hanging plants,” says Candice Hart, co-owner of Consciously Transforming Space, who works with clients in the Aspen and Denver areas to bring extra life into their spaces. “Tey are really a part of functional design, and we sugest them ofen. But be careful: If they are on a patio or balcony, make sure they are protected from the wind or can be put on the ground until storms pass.”

Transitional plants—those that can winter in the house and enjoy spring and summer outdoors—are becoming more available and on-trend. Notes Robbins, “Even houseplants are making a huge comeback. Keep in mind, shady outdoor areas are able to tolerate certain houseplants, too. Succulents are becoming very popular to plant in containers and are extremely low maintenance as well.”

WELL-INTENTIONED WATER

Even in smaller spaces such as a patio or side garden, the less watering and hassle, the better. “Clients want low maintenance,” Hart says. “Tat’s why we recommend grouping pots together, even if they are eclectic or two to three colors, and adding a drip system outside from the hose if possible.” Robbins agrees: “What I’m hearing more and more from clients is that they want low maintenance. Te best way to achieve this with your fower containers is to have irrigation tubing installed to water them on the sprinkler cycle.” »

Huston’s clients are requesting fewer in-ground water features and instead want standalone fountains. “Our best sellers are fountains in all styles, from contemporary to the classic tiered ones. I would recommend paying special attention to the sound they make, from a bubble to a trickle to a loud splash, since they will create a completely diferent atmosphere.” A fountain can help detract from trafc noise or help mute loud neighbors. Huston adds, “Birdbath fountains are also very popular since they combine aesthetics, sounds and appeal to bird watchers.”

INTERNATIONAL INSPIRATION

Travel abroad and popular television series are igniting a desire for exotic gardens that require less water. “Te Bridgerton series fueled the interest for Victorian gardens and their romantic foral displays—roses, lilacs, hydrangeas—on either side of the gravel paths. Picture rose gardens with an undergrowth of lavender around a birdbath fountain,” describes Huston. “Mediterranean gardens in the classic Greek, Italian and French styles enchant senses with their gravel sounds under a baking sun. Tey seem sophisticated, with stone walls, statuary, archways and columns crawling with blooming vines. [Tey are] the perfect environment to intersperse containers or fountains as a focal point.” •

“Over the years, we've noticed homeowners drifting toward personalized landscapes, according to their unique uses, needs and wants, with a lot of reflection on what is practical, usable, eco-friendly and inspirational.”

This year’s social engagements will be flled with personalized details and unique approaches to decor. Here are some of our favorites:

INTIMATE EVENTS

Although there will always be over-the-top spectacles, parties that evoke warmth and togetherness are making waves this year. “Clients are looking for more approachable afairs with touches of curated luxuries,” shares Allison Welch, principal of As You Wish, an event-planning and luxury lifestyle concierge company. “Tink private chef dinners for close friends on the patio, or place settings with personalized details like hand-blown stemware and heirloom linens.”

FRUITS OF THE SEA

Seafood served up in a boat or a canoe—now that makes for a memorable event! Jaala Sheldon, a creative event planner with a knack for out-of-the-box ideas, says, “With seafood [such as oysters or sushi], it’s fun to serve it in a boat or another vessel. People love to mingle around a boat! When serving lobster, I include little lobster kits with instructions on how to eat lobster—it makes for a fun, interactive experience and demonstrates a thoughtful host or hostess.”

GIFTS THAT LAST

Couples are leaning toward vintage or heirloom-quality items that will help make their houses into homes and will last generations. “Instead of sticking with white dishes or everyday tableware, we are seeing an interest in serving pieces and home accents that allow couples to celebrate everyday events, instead of just major holidays,” says Taylor Kinney of White Peacock. “Pops of color are huge this year, so think (companies like) Ginori 1735 and Juliska, and don’t forget the Le Jacquard Francais table linens.”

GET YOUR GUESTS INVOLVED

Rather than focusing on the wedding itself, couples are opting for special experiences that involve their guests all weekend long. From round-robin pickleball tournaments to group hikes, and wine tastings to city tours, brides and grooms are hoping their guests can have a little mini vacay while at their wedding.

CREATE A VISUAL STORY

For event design, the more connection between clients and the spaces they are interacting with, the better. Says Kara Moon, owner and creative principle of Enjoué Studio, “I'm very interested in learning all about our clients’ personal stories. We spend a full year designing and planning to produce a day that's unforgettable for them. Our passion is to create a visual story of who they are. Te colors we select, the details in patterns that symbolize heritage, a special memory, a family heirloom; these are the details that make the visual story rich and layered.” For example, the father of a recent client is Danish, “so we brought in our Royal Copenhagen tableware and wove it into the design concept with nods to Colorado with Indian paintbrush and columbine fowers integrated in the invitations, menu cards and even the textured lighting in the ceiling.” enjouestudio.com »

NON-BOOZY BARS

Phony negronis, botanical seltzers and prickly-pear palomas are just a few of the many mocktails on menus at some of the top restaurants in the country. With many people opting to lose the booze, it’s important to ofer alcohol-free celebratory drinks at weddings, galas and even casual get-togethers. “Our beverage program is expanding to incorporate more options for our clients,” shares Amanda Holman, marketing director at Peak Beverage. “Flavorful, complex drinks are what people want—and that doesn’t always include alcohol. You can still ofer festive drinks and creative combinations no matter what.” peakbev.com

MANNERS MATTER

As renowned etiquette author Emily Post wrote years ago, “Consideration for the rights and feelings of others is not merely a rule for behavior in public but the very foundation upon which social life is built.” Wearing fip-fops to a black-tie gala, not responding to a simple RSVP or not thanking your host are unfortunately common occurrences these days. It’s time we ante up on polite decorum and basic manners and take Emily Post’s advice to heart. Let’s hope this becomes a trend this year!

SAY CHEESE

An experienced photographer can make all the diference when it comes to capturing the essence of an event, and Bonnie Sen, founder of Bonnie Sen Editorial and Fine Art Photography, has a keen eye for just that. “It’s all about showcasing the personalities of each couple and their unique wedding, so I might aim for more photojournalistic shots or even use classic medium-format flm to evoke the authenticity of the couple and the celebration,” she says. Sen notes that many couples are requesting

whole-weekend coverage to capture wedding event activities such as horseback riding and boat-day excursions. bonniesen.com

UNIQUE CAKES

According to Emily Campbell of Love Emily Bakery, couples are slowly getting away from the traditional wedding cake. “Cakes are looking funkier and more imperfect, full of bold shapes, texture and more color,” she says. Dome-shaped cakes with textured piping and forals are very popular, but no matter what, it’s all about uber-personalization. “I have a couple who got engaged in Italy and wanted to bring that feel to their wedding cake, so we created a light lemon cake with raspberry flling and a smooth vanilla buttercream exterior in a terracotta-and-gold color scheme adorned with tomatoes on the vine along the tiers for a Tuscan feel.” @love.emily.bakery

BOLD BLOOMS

Flowers have been an integral part of weddings for centuries and provide the fnishing touch to any party, from an intimate candlelit dinner for two to an elaborate black-tie afair. Cindy Ollig, owner and designer of Te Perfect Petal, says, “Tones of neutrals in ivory, caramel and blush used to dominate wedding color palettes, but currently bold and vibrant forals are in our clients’ vision boards. Couples are expressing their personal style with large-scale foral statements and ‘moments,’ transforming spaces with foral hanging sculptures, foral hallways, fower walls, foral table runners and arches in exagerated height to add impact and individuality to their event.”

“In the past 20 years, I have heavily been engaged with Japanese antiques, particularly textiles, folk arts, and crafts. Each artifact I have encountered and collected possesses unique beauty, based on the choice of materials and execution to become functional. In those everyday objects, I often nd the most sincere and genuine beauty and I am choosing a similar path to create something intangible in my own life.”

She uses a plexiglass plate with a base layer of oilbased ink on the surface, then manipulates the inked surface using di erent tools, stencils, hand drawings, paper lithography and so on. ALL DOLLED UP

The latest wedding dress trends revolve around elegant details such as romantic shapes like corset bodices and dropped waists, princess-inspired trains, fabrics in subtle hues of pink, opulent lace, jacquard textures and even glamorous miniskirts, according to Soña Cox, owner and bridal director of Perla Bridal Boutiques in Denver and Las Vegas.

Cox, who originally studied to become an engineer, came to the U.S. from a small village in the Czech Republic to study English for three months, but the universe had other plans for her. “It’s been over 20 years since I came here,” she shares. “Afer trying myriad careers such as a travel agent and hotel management, I found my calling in the bridal industry and learned everything I could about the business.”

She was fortunate enough to have a mentor who took her under her wing at a Las Vegas bridal boutique, eventually selling the business to Cox—who has since rebranded and added a Denver location. “I am so fortunate to have this opportunity, and now that I’m expecting my frst child this summer, I am determined to work even harder to create the life that I want for my family.” Moving forward, Cox has plans to expand her current stores and possibly open more locations. “Tis is a total passion project, and I genuinely love what I do; how lucky am I?”

Providing an insider's perspective on formal fashions, Cox shares her thoughts on bridal gown trends for this year and beyond.

BOWS

Petite ribbons and dramatic bows, typical of schoolgirl fashions, are now seamlessly integrated into red carpet events and even bridal gowns. Bejeweled bows sewn into bodices, sculpted bow-like bustlines, and delicate rows of bows down the back of a gown are currently in vogue.

DROP-WAIST SILHOUETTES

Te drop-waist trend has taken center stage in bridal fashion for 2024, complementing the rise of exposed corsetry. Tis modern silhouette allows the form to be highlighted beautifully, showcasing dramatic bustiers over skirts and incorporating the silhouette into stunning ball gowns.

FLORAL APPLIQUÉS

While forals are typically associated with spring, many fall collections introduced fresh ways to incorporate the motif. Unique 3D foral moments emerged through appliqués, from sweet rosettes at bustlines to textural white and light green petals and grand organza additions like capes and jackets.

BOLD COLOR

White is not the only option for brides next year. Color made a statement again in this season's presentations, with pastel pinks and blues adding dreamy touches for both bridal gowns and men’s suits. »

DRAMATIC OVERSKIRTS

With many couples opting for multiple looks on their wedding day, designers ofer overskirts for added fexibility. Tis allows brides to achieve a dramatic silhouette for a portion of their wedding, easily removing layers to reveal a more ftted shape. Designers pair sleek column dresses with overskirts featuring full trains for an elegant ceremony to afer-party transition.

PANTS

Not all brides wear dresses—unique jumpsuits with billowing overskirts and sexy, lingerie-inspired short sets are popping up. Many designers even provide pants as an option, allowing brides to swap them with a full skirt beneath stylish bustiers for a comfortable change later in the evening.

UNIQUE VEILS

Brides seeking of-the-moment accessories should explore the wide selection of unique veils available. Intricate embroidery, standout appliqués and vintage-inspired lace trim all add drama to the ceremony look. Trends like all-over tulle create bold shapes while foral motifs can ofer feminine touches as well as whimsy.

SHEER LAYERS

Sheer layered fashions embody a contemporary and ethereal aesthetic by integrating transparent fabrics in multiple layers, creating depth and visual intrigue. Striking a delicate balance between modesty and sensuality, fabrics like chifon, organza, tulle and mesh contribute to a light and airy feel, elevating the overall gracefulness of the ensemble. Opting for a monochromatic or tonal color scheme in layering sheer fabrics ensures a cohesive and sophisticated appearance, allowing the transparency of the layers to take center stage. •

What love looks like

Gina and Micah’s spring wedding at Sanctuary Golf Course in Sedalia featured soft pastel tones, personalized stationery, and a fusion of Korean and German heritage. This was a celebration to remember. Before walking down the aisle, the couple shared an intimate first look, exchanging personal vows. Following the ceremony, the couple changed into traditional Korean hanboks custom-made for them and invited their guests to be part of the Paebaek ceremony. The rite symbolizes the unification of the newlywed couple, where the groom’s family formally welcomes the bride into their household. Gina and Micah’s spring wedding was a harmonious blend of cultural traditions, personalized details, and a romantic garden ambiance.
