201 Garfield St. A vacant plot of land was scooped up by Iconic Investments, which plans on building a new apartment complex. According to the Colorado Real Estate Journal, the plans include three buildings with a total of 26 units.

Each building will also have several parking spaces. The plot of land is just over 37,000 square feet.

Elevation Development Group broke ground on a new apartment building at 260 N. Josephine St. in July.

KAILYN LAMB 260 N. Josephine St. Elevation Development Group broke ground in mid-July for a six-story project in Cherry Creek North. The building is set to be 70,000 square feet of mixed use space including retail and office spaces. Elevation is based in Denver.

Birdcall The fast-food chicken restaurant opened its third location near the University of Denver at 1535 E. Evans Ave. in August. The first location opened in Five Points, followed by a location inside the Whole Foods next to Union Station downtown.

Instead of ordering meals from staff as in a traditional fast-food restaurant, customers use a kiosk to place their orders. The new location is also the first to feature a drive-thru.

The restaurant offers menu options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The DU location is only serving lunch and dinner, but Birdcall’s website says it will be expanding to breakfast soon.

Dos Luces, a South American-inspired brewery opened its doors on South Broadway at the end of July.

KAILYN LAMB Dos Luces Dos Luces opened at 1236 S. Broadway in the Baker neighborhood in late July. The brewery makes chicha and pulque, beers traditionally made of fermented corn in South America. Owner and brewer Judd Belstock said he wanted to make unique beers that you can’t find anywhere else in Denver. He previously worked at MillerCoors and Boulder Beer.

Belstock tweaked the recipes for both styles of beers. Traditionally, chicha was made by chewing the corn. Belstock will malt it instead.

Buyside The podcast launched in April this year, helmed by Nate Abercrombie, a former equity researcher with Janus Henderson Investors.

“I’m trying to provide content for investors that they don’t have anywhere else,” Abercrombie said.

Right now the most difficult part is finding companies willing to participate in interviews.

So far, 13 episodes are vailable online: www. investingwiththebuyside.com. Each episode runs about an hour, and includes an introduction on the company before the interview.

The most popular episodes are close to 1,000 downloads. Eventually, Abercrombie said he would like to receive advertising revenue from the podcast, but individual episodes need to hit 10,000 downloads before that can happen.

Famous Pizza After more than 40 years on South Broadway, Famous Pizza has closed. In the summer of 2017, news outlets announced the restaurant would be closing after its building at 98 S. Broadway sold to new owners. Instead, the restaurant hung on, paying a month-to-month lease until the building’s owner was able to secure new tenants.

A staff member at Famous Pizza confirmed with the Washington Park Profile that the last week of August was the last time the restaurant would open its doors.

The restaurant sat on the corner of Bayaud Avenue and Broadway and shared a building with a barber shop and street taco restaurant. The owners of those businesses announced their closures due to a rent increase at the end of July.

CHANGES Cherry Creek Dermatology The 30-year-old dermatology office was recently acquired by Epiphany Dermatology of Austin, Texas. The office is at 3773 Cherry Creek N. Drive, Suite 970. The doctors at Cherry Creek Dermatology, including its founder Dr. J. Michael Maloney, will remain on staff, according to a news release.

Maloney said the acquisition would help “expand our ability to provide for the dermatologic needs of our community” through resources at Epiphany, such as tech support.

This is the first office in Colorado for Epiphany, which operates dermatology offices in six other states, including its home state of Texas.

Fooducopia The Washington Park restaurant completed its remodel and reopened its doors to customers in early August. Fooducopia is located at 1939 E. Kentucky Ave. The restaurant focuses on sourcing its food from local and organic farms from Colorado. According to its website, Fooducopia has a 26-acre farm as well. A list of producers the restaurant uses can also be found online.

Fooducopia serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and also has a wine and cocktail menu.

Denver native receives civil leadership award Judge Gary Jackson has served on the Denver County Court bench since 2013 Staff Report Judge Gary Jackson, of Denver County Court, received the Monte Pascoe Civil Leadership Award in August during the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce State of the City luncheon.

The award honors the legacy of Monte Pascoe, who worked as a lawyer in Colorado until his death at the age of 71 in 2006. Gov. John Hickenlooper, then Denver’s mayor, established the award that year to honor Denver residents who are also civic leaders within the community.

Hancock said the award is given annually to leaders within Denver who “work tirelessly” to improve the community, fight for justice and work as a mentor for others.

After graduating high school in Denver, Jackson received a degree in political science from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He continued his schooling there at Colorado Law, graduating in 1970.

Jackson began his career in the Denver district attorney’s office. In 1971, he helped to found the Sam Cary Bar Association, offering resources to African-American attorneys. He served as the association president and co-founded its endowment fund, which provides scholarships.

“It was this association in 1971 that started me on what I call my leadership journey,” Jackson said.

Jackson then transitioned to the U.S. District Attorney’s office in Denver working the civil division in 1974. He started his own firm in 1976. He practiced law for more than 40 years before being appointed as a judge to the Denver County Court in 2013 by Hancock. He was the mayor’s first appointment to the bench.

Pascoe graduated from East High School in the City Park neighborhood and attended Dartmouth College. He earned his law degree from Stanford University. Upon his return to Denver, he worked for the Ireland Stapleton Pryor & Pascoe law firm until his death. He was an education advocate and served as a board member for several entities including the Colorado School of Mines, the Colorado Open Lands Foundation, Colorado Water Conservation Board and more.

Pascoe backed a case that went to the U.S. Supreme Court, calling for an end to policies that enabled segregation in Denver schools.

The court ruled in favor of the families in 1973, allowing for desegregation.

Jackson touched on this own history as a black student at George Washington High School. The school is in the Washington Virginia Vale neighborhood in southeast Denver.

He said the efforts of Pascoe and education advocates such as Rachel Noel, the first black woman elected to the Denver Board of Education in 1965, were key in moving the city forward.

“In 1963, in my class of 600 at George Washington, there were only two black students, one Latino and a few Asian-American students,” he said. “Now at George Washington, it is 30 percent white, 30 percent black and 30 percent Latino.”

Cause of building explosion in Baker neighborhood unclear Staff Report A customer had just left Chinki Yun’s liquor store at 340 S. Santa Fe Drive when Yun heard what sounded like an explosion. The doors of his coolers flew open. Dust fell from the ceiling. When he ran outside, he saw the customer’s car stopped in the middle of the road.

Yun thought a truck had rammed through a building.

But a residential building in the 400 block of Santa Fe Drive in the Baker neighborhood had exploded, sending wood, glass and debris flying through windows of businesses across the street. No one was killed in the Aug. 14 explosion, which Denver Fire is still investigating.

Nine people were injured, two of which were inside the building, said Captain Greg Pixley, a spokesman with Denver Fire.

On Aug. 14, an explosion partially collapsed a seven-unit building on the 400 block of Santa Fe Drive. The Denver Fire Department is investigating the cause of the explosion.

During the second day, Pixley said the fire department sorted through the rubble looking for clues. The origin point of the explosion is still

unclear. Several items have sent out for lab testing.

Explosions are a rare occurrence, Pixley said. A full investigation is important because finding the cause may help prevent another issue in the future.

“If we can eliminate something that has the potential for greater

damage or injury in the future,” he said, “then we’ve done a service outside of just extinguishing the fire.”

Emergency responders were on the scene within minutes of the explosion, Yun said.

A foot-long piece wood flew in front of his building and has since been moved to the side. Many of the

buildings on the block have boarded up their windows after flying debris shattered the glass.

Two days after the accident, a small group of people were moving out of the remaining apartments in the damaged building. People were wearing dust masks as they loaded a truck. The building that exploded was a half-block long and contained seven units, and one of the center units collapsed after the explosion.

Residents declined to comment on the event to the Washington Park Profile.

The manager of a neighboring business, who would only give his first name, Brent, said he was at work when the explosion happened.

The business has been in the area for 16 years.

The commotion caused by the explosion caused a lot of confusion, he said. “The pressure and the feeling of it was crazy — it was just chaos.”

No suspects yet in deaths of homeless people Denver police investigation continues into homicides on South Broadway Staff Report Denver police are still investigating the Aug. 9 deaths of three homeless people found dead of gunshot wounds just north of the Interstate 25 overpass on South Broadway and East Ohio Avenue.

As of Aug. 28, there had been no updates on arrests or suspects, police spokesman Doug Schepman said.

The police department has asked the public for any information regarding the shooting at 765 S. Broadway of Nicole “Nikki” Boston, 28; Jerome “Rome” Coronado, 39; and Chris “Little Cowboy” Zamudio, 45.

During a media briefing on Aug. 9, Joe Montoya, the division chief with Denver Police, said the department also received a call for a stabbing at about 4:30 a.m. off of Santa Fe Drive. The stabbing Zamudio occurred about 500 feet away from the shooting. Police arrested Kyle Cuffe later that day as a suspect for the stabbing.

Police are investigating whether the two incidents are linked, but at this time Coronado have found no evidence to connect the two crimes.

Montoya said the police department would be stepping up security in the area.

He added it would also be doing outreach to vulnerable populations like the homeless community, directing them to shelters and other resources.

Conover created “What’s Up in Platt Park” in 2016 to do just that, while also helping contribute to neighborhood schools. The organization promotes one local business a month and posts video interviews with local business people on its Facebook page.

For the past two Octobers, What’s Up has hosted a pumpkin patch with refreshments and fun activities for kids in Conover’s front yard to benefit Asbury Elementary School, raising more than $740 the first year and $2,100 the second. Conover said he would like to eventually expand into doing fundraising for other schools as well.

“The pumpkin patch has outgrown our location and we have a commitment from Asbury to hold it there next year with additional activities for kids like face painting,” he said. “Our goal is to eventually raise enough to pay for a para(professional) teacher salary.”

Through a food drive it has sponsored in May the past two years, What’s Up supports Asbury’s “Hands Up For the Children,” a local nonprofit that delivers backpacks of food to food-insecure children and their families every week.

He is hoping to expand giving to this program as well by getting other local businesses and volunteers from the community involved. He’s hoping to annually fill the pantry so kids can have food during the school year.

“Last year their pantry was completely empty,” he said, “and we filled it to the brim with donations collected in bins in my front yard and outside my office.”

Conover and his wife, Christie, who are expecting their first child this month, hope to benefit soon even more directly from the schools they help support.

“I benefit so much from the shops, restaurants and schools that make Platt Park special that giving feels natural,” he said. “I hope word about what we’re doing just starts to snowball, and more and more people step up. What’s good for neighborhood businesses and schools is good for the whole community.”

Managing pests and disease in your fall vegetable garden

A

s fall approaches, most of us are enjoying the literal fruits of our labor as the tomato and squash family plants put on their biggest show. If you planned accordingly, you might GUEST also still be harvestCOLUMN ing greens and root Brien Darby crops. However, with the harvest often comes increased pest and disease pressure.

Let’s talk about three of the most likely culprits: powdery mildew, spinach leaf miner and slugs.

Unless you have had a very fortunate year, you’ve probably noticed powdery mildew on your squash family plants — summer and winter squash, cucumbers and melons — as well as some of your ornamentals, such as lilacs, roses and zinnias. Powdery mildew looks like a fine, white dust that coats the foliage of plants. In early infestations, the older leaves of plants are the most affected, but if left untreated, the entire plant can succumb to the fungus.

Fortunately, while the treatment is the same, often the fungus causing the outbreak is different for each plant. This means that it is unlikely to jump from the lilacs, which are often infected early in the year, to the squash, which are infected later.

The best treatment for powdery mildew is prevention.

In the vegetable garden, the techniques for preventing an outbreak on squash family crops are: providing adequate space between plants, pruning older leaves frequently to increase airflow and, if possible, practicing

yearly crop rotation. Once an infection has occurred, one effective treatment is a foliar spray of potassium bicarbonate sold under various trade names including MilStop. The spray must contact the infected surfaces, and multiple applications are usually required.

You may have noticed over the last few seasons that the leaves on your spinach, beets and Swiss chard have large dead patches and the plants show signs of wilt and under-performance. A small fly known as the spinach leaf miner is most likely the culprit.

This fly lays small clusters of white eggs, 1-3 mm long, on the undersides of the leaves.

As they hatch, the larvae tunnel into the leaves creating the telltale signs. Management of the fly is achievable but can be time-consuming. If you notice an outbreak occurring, the first step is to remove all affected leaves.

Second, check the undersides of the leaves for eggs and remove by wiping with a cloth or your finger. Once all visible eggs have been removed, cover the crops with a light-weight row cover. It may be still necessary to check for eggs about once a week.

Lastly, slugs and snails are a perennial problem in well-watered and/or poorly draining gardens. These pests can devour both the leaves and fruit of plants and they often work at night and very quickly. If you suspect slug or snail damage or you see the pests in your garden, try sprinkling the base of plants with a product called diatomaceous earth.

HOW LOW CAN IT GO? Once again the chart tells the story of the Spring 2018 real estate market.

The inventory of homes for sale in Washington Park this year was even lower than it was the first half of last year. This resulted in increases in both average price per square foot and median sales price in several of the categories.

I get many questions about whether we are in a bubble and if so, when it will burst. I do believe that there will be a slow down. I have seen it many times in my 30 plus years as a Realtor. I don’t think it will be the kind severe downturn or “burst bubble” that I have seen twice in the past.

In the late 1980’s the downturn was caused by an oil bust that caused many to move away from Denver. In 2009, it was caused by the financial crisis and high foreclosure rate. Neither of these causes are likely to repeat themselves. Our economy is much more diverse than it was in the 1980’s. With rates so low, homeowners are paying down a large amount of principal with each mortgage payment. Thus, even if an owner needs to move due to a job loss or other factor, they should have enough equity to get their home sold without needing to bring money to the closing table or face foreclosure if they can’t.

Thus, there is not likely to be a repeat of the high number of foreclosures or short sales we saw in the downturns of 1987 and 2009. However, an increase in interest rates and the increase in prices will likely create an affordability problem at some point. This will shrink the pool of buyers creating longer days on the market and fewer bidding wars and shifting the market to favor buyers more than it has in the last 3 or 4 years.

Managing a bidding war for a seller or getting a buyer’s offer accepted in a multiple offer situation is something that takes knowledge and experience and a long term relationship with other Realtors. Denverites raised $14.3 million to save the Jewish Community Center

I

n early August, Lara Knuettel watched from the sidelines as kids from the Staenberg-Loup Jewish Community Center (JCC) played at the Maccabi Youth Games in Orange County, California. The games are held in a different location every year, and Jewish Community Centers from around the world participate.

This year, it was a time for Knuettel to breathe a small sigh of relief.

When she took over as CEO of the Denver JCC just over a year ago, the center was $14.3 million in debt, and there was concern for the organization’s future.

“That was in question for a while,” she said.

The Denver team at the Maccabi had spent months playing sports and training for the games at the JCC, a125,000-squarefoot campus at 350 S. Dahlia St. in the Virginia Vale neighborhood. As a local community center, its mission is much more than to be just a neighborhood gym, Knuettel said. On average, 6,000 people come through the organization’s doors every week. That means, she said, it’s a home where people of all ages can spend their time growing and learning from one another.

For that reason, it was crucial to get the J — as it is known in the community — back to a healthy financial state after a group of donors raised the money to get the organization out of debt.

“That’s the future of the JCC, right there — it’s those kids that we want to be here for,” Knuettel said. “I wanted to help save that mission and keep it here for generations to come.”

‘Weight of the debt’ In 2015, the JCC announced a $50 million capital campaign with plans to move the community center’s tennis courts and build a new fitness facility in its place. The project also had plans for a new office building.

Less than a year into the project, JCC’s thenCEO Stuart Raynor left the organization. He had been in the post since 2007. Ali Hill took over in September 2016.

At about the same time Hill took the position, JCC leadership realized the $50 million project was not feasible. Instead of building a new athletic facility, the JCC updated its existing building, cutting the bill for the campaign down to $15 million.

Knuettel officially took over from Hill in November 2017 after being the interim CEO for three months. As soon as she started, the JCC began its annual budgeting process. That was when Knuettel said she knew the organization to find a way to not only clear its debt, but to become financially healthy again.

“It was a little bit of a shock,” she said.

“That’s when I realized the weight of the debt could not be sustainable by this organization.”

Saving the J In October, the Rose Community Foundation, an organization that supports nonprofits in Denver, approached Knuettel to help her come up with a plan. Rose Community, as well as the Mizel Family Foundation, founded

by Larry Mizel and his wife Carol, the Sturm Family Foundation, founded by Donald and Susan Sturm, and Michael Staenberg, a Colorado developer for whom the organization is named for, donated millions toward the debt.

In addition to those donors, Kneutter said 35 families and foundations made contributions to help save the JCC. “It was the community that saved the community,” she said. “People came forward because they saw the value of JCC.” The donated funds went toward purchasing the JCC campus. Rose Community created a subsidiary nonprofit that will hold the proper-

KAILYN LAMB ty, leasing it to the JCC for $1 annually for the next 100 years. This will allow the JCC to focus on maintaining the buildings and improving programming. The organization also brought in a new board, whose members had expertise in finance and real estate.

According to a 990 tax from from the JCC in 2016, the organization made a little more than $6 million in programming revenue and $7 million in grants and contributions.

Expenses for the JCC were at $10.1 million according to the form.

“This is a reset button for this organization,” Knuettel said.

Moving foward Now that the debt has been cleared, the JCC can focus on its programing, as well as its place in the community, Knuettel said. The JCC was founded in 1922 and has moved from place to place around the city before settling in Virginia Vale.

Jeanne Abrams with the Rocky Mountain Jewish Historical Society at the University of Denver said there were two waves of immigration during the 1800s. In the first half of the century, Jewish people of German descent traveled to Denver, and the second wave came from Eastern Europe in the 1880s.

There was a national push for Jewish community centers in the ‘20s to help give children a cultural resource as well as a place to play and exercise, she said.

A shopowner named Leopold Guldman donated the equipment for a new community center, and the Rude family donated the land near what is now Rude Park in the Sun Valley neighborhood at 2855 W. Holden Place. It was called the Guldman Community Center when it first opened. In 1937, it moved to 1601 Irving St. The Jewish Community Centers of Denver was officially incorporated in 1947, and a new building was opened off of Colfax Avenue and Williams Street in 1950. This consolidated the Guldman Community Center as well as another local organization together, Abrams said.

The JCC brought families together from both regions of Europe, Abrams said. Guldman’s family was of German descent and the Rudes were from Eastern Europe. The center also offered English classes to help people integrate into society in Denver.

These days, JCC programming is meant to help people through all stages of their lives, from infancy to old age. This is part of what makes the JCC unique, Knuettel said. The organization has the fitness center, but also offers

Knuettel’s office sits off the main lobby in the Dahlia Street building.

Every day, she hears the sounds of people coming in and out of the doors — giving her a feel for how they spend their time at the J. That was how she fell in love with the organization, she said. One of her favorite things is seeing the young interact with the old.

“While Jewish is in our name, it is value driven,” she said. “It’s rare to find that kind of variety.”

Remembering family roots in Denver

Denver’s Jewish community has always been tight-knit, said Jerrod Rosen, a fourth-generation Coloradan who grew up in Boulder but often visited his grandparents in the Denver area. Learning more about the family’s history in the city was part of what brought him back from working as a restauranteur in places like New York and Chicago.

“It was a really close-knit community,” he said.

Rosen recently opened Rye Society in River North at 3090 Larimer St. The deli features 100-year-old recipes from his family. When he first leased the space, he found out it was just blocks away from where his family operated a local grocery store the 1920s.

“The most fascinating thing for me with this business was finding out that I chose

the space (and am) getting into a neighborhood where we used to be,” he said.

Back then, Denver was split between east and west side Jewish communities, Rosen said. His family lived on the west side of Denver. The family lived in what was considered the “Jewish ghetto” over by

the Colfax Avenue viaduct and where the Broncos stadium stands today. Times were hard for families back then. Rosen said his large family shared a small space and the kids worked as newsies, people who sold or delivered newspapers, to save money.

“When it was the `20s, `30s, whatnot,

the Jews didn’t have much money. My grandmother grew up with 11 kids in the house, in two bedrooms,” he said. “It was something like 40 to 50 percent of the newsies at the time were all Jewish. That’s how they bought their first house. They were working from 6, 7 years old.”

Eventually, his grandmother started going door-to-door to create partnerships with their neighbors. Those partnerships led to purchasing buildings in the Sloan’s Lake area, some of which are still in the Rosen family.

Over the years, the community has changed, Rosen said. Much of the younger generation is not as religious. But people still want to connect with family traditions.

“Our generation still wants to identify with it — they still really appreciate the cultural aspects,” Rosen said. “That’s how we all grew up and we still want to let that live on.”

Staff Report On July 24, a hailstorm came through the south metro area, causing a sinkhole to open in Sheridan, southwest of Denver. In Englewood, a young woman died when water flooded the basement she was in.

These summer storms are common, but if the wrong area gets enough water, the effect can be devastating said Kevin Stewart, who works in flood warning and information services with the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (UDFCD) in Colorado.

The UDFCD works with several municipalities in the Denver metro area. After storms like the one on July 24, it checks local waterways for trash and debris such as tree limbs.

Late July and early August can hit Denver and the surrounding areas hard with hail and rainstorms that can cause flooding. Ken MacKenzie, the executive director of the UDFCD, said this is the peak of storm activity.

“That’s when you get a lot of the slow-moving, high-intensity rain events,” MacKenzie said.

This particular storm brought in an estimated 1 1/2 inches of rain over an hour in Denver, MacKenzie said. Englewood took the brunt of the storm, receiving just over two inches of water in a shorter period of time.

A recent study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers looked at the Harvard Gulch area to try and find flood mitigation solutions.

The study covered the gulch from where it connects to the South Platte River at Wesley Avenue west over to Colorado Boulevard. The Army Corps estimated the cost of the flood mitigation projects at about $26 million.

The study is being reviewed by the Army Corps, and if approved will be included in a report that will go to Congress. From there, Congress will decide if the project can get funding through the Water Resources Development Act. Congress usually puts the funding together every two years, with the next one set for 2020.

“They really didn’t leave enough room for the creek when they built the neighborhood in the first place,” he said.

Knowing whether a home is in a floodplain and getting insurance is the first step.

Stewart said people should have a flood plan similar to any other emergency storm such as a tornado. He added that people should avoid driving during flooding because all it takes is 12 inches of water to make a car float.

When storms are coming in, people can go to the UDFCD website for tracking. The site uses radar that can pinpoint the storm’s location and possible intensity.

“We definitely have our eyes to the skies,” MacKenzie said.

ratcheted up and incited public vulgarity and aggression toward journalists who were simply doing their jobs and did nothing to provoke such actions.

This comes on the heels of a gunman’s attack on the Capital Gazette newspaper in Maryland that left five staff members dead in June.

We should be alarmed.

When did we forget that a democracy cannot survive without a free and independent press beholden only to the people of the communities it serves — not to the leaders and politicians who decry it when their actions are reported in a light they disapprove of?

Thomas Jefferson understood that important truth: “Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter,” he said.

We should be alarmed.

The role of newspapers — and journalism in all its forms — needs the support of communities. It is imperative for the public to understand the harm generated by rhetoric that attempts to undercut the importance of the work we do.

Wishing the game of summer could stay a little longer

The Denver City Council, led by Councilman Jolon Clark, has a measure on the November ballot which would generate $46 million a year for parks.

This would entail raising the city sales tax from 3.65 percent to 3.90 percent, or 25 cents on every dollar. (Washington Park Profile, August 2018.)

At first glance, a person might say “What is a measly 25 cents additional tax?” Until you look at the magnitude. To raise $46 million every year, forever, would require, in present value terms, a fund of $1,531,800,000 assuming a 3 percent rate of return, or $1,150,000,000, if one assumes a 4 percent rate of return. And, the council, like many political

bodies, has no plans for a sunset provision—i.e., the tax is “forever.”

A sales tax is very regressive, falling disproportionately on lower-income citizens. Regardless of how much of the sales tax that non-Denver citizens pay, versus Denverites, it is still a massive growth of government, and will not contribute to the economic attractiveness of Denver for companies that wish to locate or do business in Denver. I urge the mayor and the council to modify this billion-dollar tax proposal.

t’s been a few years since I graduated from college. Gone are the days when I could ask someone: “What are your plans for summer break?”

But I still get FROM THE nostalgic when summer comes to EDITOR an end because that also means the end of baseball season.

I attended my first softball camp when I was 5. I felt awkward with my big glove.

Before camp started, we had stuffed the glove under my matKailyn Lamb tress, wrapped in a rubber band to break it in. I am a lefty, but for some reason it felt more comfortable to play right-handed.

I remember standing in front of the coach. I felt miles away as she got ready to pitch the ball. It left her hand and — SMACK — hit me right in the nose.

“This is it,” my dad thought. “She’ll never play again.”

But I played continuously until fifth grade.

It was probably a good thing, too. My dad is a big baseball fan, and always wanted his kids to play.

My dad moved to Colorado after graduating from the University of Illinois 1988.

He was following his best friend who had moved here the year before. Their friendship is rooted in leather gloves and red stitching. To this day, they play on the same softball team, which they started playing on back in 1995 (the Isotopes), and have a long-running fantasy baseball league.

Every April, my uncle flies in from Illinois as the fantasy league takes over the house. For weeks ahead of “The Draft,” my dad is nothing but RBIs and batting-average stats. On the phone, my dad will grill my grandpa, teasing him that the Chicago Cubs creamed the St. Louis Cardinals in the latest pre-season game.

Changes must be made to the Denver City Charter

T

he Denver City Charter does not give city council the authority to independently contract for legal and other professional services. Two incidences in the past year have convinced me that the charter needs to be changed to clearly allow city council or its members to seek professional services to assist us as a body in addressing policy, reviewing complex contracts or on various projects where outside expertise is needed.

You may remember the controversial Denver International Airport Great Hall contract.

City council was being asked to approve a 34-year, $1.8 billion agreement to design, construct, finance, operate and maintain concessions on the fifth level at Denver International Airport. The first-of-a-kind agreement for DIA ran 157-pages and included 15,000 pages of addendums and attachments, excluding the financial documents. Over a period of months, the agreement had been negotiated by a city team that included special counsel to DIA with expertise in complicated public/private partnership agreements.

City council was expected to review this complicated arrangement and cast our first votes in one weeks’ time. I, and four of my colleagues, sought and found outside legal counsel with public/private partnership

experience to assist us in reviewing the documents in the short time frame provided. Their work was stopped mid-stream when we were informed by the city attorney that we could not hire legal counsel under the charter, nor would she approve payment to the team we had engaged.

I believed then and Deborah Ortega now that city council would better serve the people of Denver by having a thorough understanding of the finances, revenue and project delivery.

Instead, we were expected to trust the team that negotiated the agreement (and had a vested interest in approval) and representatives of the company selected to carry out the project, Ferrovial, who joined airport staff in briefing council members.

For city council members to do our due diligence in reviewing this and other complex multimillion dollar and multiyear contracts, it may be necessary to hire professional consultants to assist us with a thorough review of large projects.

There were also a series of employee-related cases and an incident involving the mayor’s inappropriate text messages to a member of his security detail. City council committed to “researching the historical data surrounding employment cases and settlements, as well as crafting a policy going forward that will ensure council has more information regarding these settlements.”

I think it is imperative that we utilize outside legal expertise free from any potential conflict of interest to assist in crafting policy for these and other large settlements.

I conclude that the Denver City Charter needs to be amended to clearly provide city council and its members the ability to hire legal and other professional services to assist in contract review, legal research and analysis and other activities as we work to fulfill our obligations to Denver’s citizens.

Councilmember Paul Kashmann and I worked with our legislative counsel in the city attorney’s office to draft language to make this change in the charter, which would ultimately be taken to a vote of the people. This was presented to the Finance and Governance committee on Aug. 14. It became clear in talking to our colleagues that there is interest in looking at the city council powers in the charter from a broader perspective. As a result, I have pulled

my bill that would have brought the matter to the voters in November, and instead will allow more time for comprehensive review and recommendations in time for the May 2019 ballot. Kashmann and I will co-chair a committee to identify obsolete sections of the charter or to add in new sections clarifying how council meets its responsibilities to the voters.

Then, large apartments in the neighborhood, four to eight blocks from the park, were using its name. At first we snickered, but then builders outside our RNO began to use it! Is it legal? Do the Realtors explain this once the dotted line is signed? And why is the name Observatory so compelling — does each unit come with a telescope? Heh, heh.

Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to check out several ballfields. As blasphemous as it is to say in the religion of baseball, Yankees Stadium is the worst. With just the tiniest bit of hometown bias, Coors Field is still my favorite place to see a game. After a brief hiatus from softball, I moved to Seattle for high school in the summer of 2005.

My school was small, 700 students K-12. It meant if I wanted to join a softball team, I had to play for a different school. The team I was on didn’t really care how we played. I was a sophomore and competitive by nature. By the time our third loss rolled around, I was done. I didn’t want to play with people who had no drive to do well. I was so upset I thought I wouldn’t pick up a bat again.

My senior year changed that. A good friend told me that my school was trying to pull together a baseball team. They were one player short of a regulation team. He knew

I had played softball for years — would I be interested?

So I played second base on the boy’s baseball team my senior year. I learned more about the sport in that short season than in all my years of playing softball.

It brought me back to what baseball meant to me as a kid. It made me remember the feel of the bases at a ballpark in Broomfield as my small feet rounded third after my dad’s softball games.

‘A marathon effort’ A recent study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will help restore habitat areas along the South Platte River. Ronnie Crawford said the fish that live in the Platte prefer deeper and cooler waters.

After 10 years, a finished study offers improvements on the South Platte

Two years ago, Overland resident Ronnie Crawford put together the first neighborhood float down the South Platte River. As a board member of Denver Trout Unlimited, Crawford is a regular at the river and can be found throwing in a line for any of its 10 species of fish.

Because of his experience in the water, he knows that the timing for a river float has to be just right — when the spring run-off comes down from the mountains and raises the water level by a few feet.

But this year, the water level never came up.

“The snow melt was so early and so prolonged that it never really raised the river,” Crawford said.

While Crawford said he has seen fewer tubers and kayakers in the river this summer, the low water levels also affect the fishing community.

Denver Trout Unlimited acts as a resource for fishers, providing temperature monitoring and keeping people up-to-date on factors impacting fish in the river.

Many of the fish in the South Platte, which starts in Douglas county and flows through Colorado into Nebraska where it joins the North Platte, enjoy cool and deep waters. When the water level is low, the river moves more slowly, Crawford said.

Lower depths and less speed mean the sun has more time to warm up the water. Warmer water also means more moss.

A restoration study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers could help alleviate some of these problems. The study is looking at adding water depth, giving the river more variety and habitat space for animals through $397 million worth of projects.

Creating more depth to the river will hopefully bring in more water, which Crawford believes will be a benefit to the community.

“Everything’s richer if there’s more water,” he said.

Realizing the dream Jeff Shoemaker, executive director of The Greenway Foundation, sees the restoration plan as the next iteration of cleaning up the South Platte.

The Greenway Foundation was formed in 1974

by Shoemaker’s father, Joe, nine years after the city had witnessed one of the worst floods in its history in 1965. During the flood, the Platte rose, bringing a tidal wave to Denver that destroyed bridges and covered the city in mud and debris.

For years before the flood, the city had used the Platte as its literal dumping grounds, Shoemaker said. Landfills lined the river bank, and property values close to the Platte dropped, compared to the surrounding area. The flood was a turning point for the city. Shoemaker said his father’s dream was to make the Platte the city’s economic driver and a place where people would flock to for recreation.

“It’s important to remember, when I was just 10 years old, this river was a flowing sewer,” Shoemaker said. “Everybody thought (my dad) was crazy.”

But after more than 40 years, the dream has been realized, Shoemaker said. Property values along the river are up, and Confluence Park, the foundation’s first project, completed in 1975, is one of the most used in the city.

Completion a decade away Back in 2008, The Greenway Foundation lobbied Adams County leaders to try and expand the opportunity for a study by the Army Corps on that portion of the Platte. The expansion of the study now covers the river from 58th Avenue to 6th Avenue in Denver.

The river has been cut into six different sections, in which the Corps looked at the depth of the river, flooding issues, recreation access and the ecosystem as a whole. While the study has some flood mitigation benefits, it primarily looked at habitat restoration.

In August, the Corps took public comments as the final part of the study. It will now cycle through

The Corps is hoping to have this process done in time to be included in the Water Resources Development Act in 2020.

The Greenway Foundation has been contracted by the city to help implement projects from the Corps restoration study. Shoemaker said that will likely come in the form of seeking out funding. The $397 million price tag is an estimate based on the full scope of the study. The final report may recommend certain projects over others in his final report, Shoemaker said. During the design phase, the government will cover 75 percent of costs and in the construction phase it will cover 65 percent.

In all, Shoemaker estimated it will be about 10 years before projects from the study see completion, calling it a “marathon effort.”

But continued work on the river is just the next phase for the foundation: For Shoemaker, the work is never done.

“It’s really become something that I never envisioned it would be,” he said. “This foundation has accelerated the rebirth of our city’s greatest natural resource.”

Greenway Foundation The Greenway Foundation is working on several park projects throughout Denver, such as the River North Park. The organization has also put together a recommendation plan for the Cherry Creek trail between University and Colorado boulevards. Through the Chatfield Reallocation Project, the foundation has partnered with Denver Water to add more storage in the Chatfield Reservoir in Littleton.

“In 2005, DPS was last among the state’s largest 12 districts in academic growth in English language arts and math,” Boasberg said in the release. “Through the focus of the Denver Plan and the incredibly hard work of our teachers, students and families, DPS has gone from last to first in academic growth.”

DPS also announced that graduation numbers in the district continue to rise. The class of 2018 was the largest the school has had, with 400 more graduating students than the previous record.

Spike in unpaid lunches leaves DPS with debt

A year after Colorado’s largest school district instituted a policy guaranteeing all students a school lunch whether or not they have the money to pay, Denver district officials are planning new measures to prevent the unexpected debt that accrued last year.

Those efforts include ensuring that parents fill out applications for free and reduced-price meals at the start of the year, clarifying how

schools should communicate with families about unpaid debt and establishing new rules for charter schools that participate in the district’s school lunch program.

After the new policy to prevent so-called “lunch shaming” took effect in August 2017, debt from unpaid lunches soared to $356,000, up from $13,000 the year before.

Denver woman runs food pantry from her front yard

Every two weeks or so, Deidra Bates wakes up to the same gift: several boxes of unperishable food stacked in front of her fence.

“I’m not sure who does it, because I’ve never seen them,” the Denver resident said.

“They do it at night, in fact.”

This anonymous gift is just one of many donations Bates receives for the food box stationed in front of her house. The box, which Bates set up last September at her home on West Exposition Avenue in the Westwood neighborhood, serves as a miniature food pantry to provide for those in need.

“It’s a place where people can bring food they aren’t going to use, and other people that might be able to use it can pick it up,” Bates said. “There’s no fees involved, and it’s totally anonymous.”

The food box is one way the mother of five gives back to a community in which many people struggle to afford the necessities, including food and shelter. Since 2017, Denver County has seen an increase in its homeless population, according to data from the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative.

There are 3,445 individuals in a homeless living situation in Denver County, according to the report. That number is up from 3,336 the previous year.

administrators by surprise and figured into their mid-year decision to add snacks students pay for, such as Doritos and Rice Krispies Treats, to relementary school cafeterias to recoup some of the loss.

Denver Public Schools Chief Operating Officer David Suppes said more than one-third of the total debt last year came from charter schools that contract with the district to get school meals for their students.

Omar D. Blair Charter School had the highest lunch debt among Denver schools last year at $11,500.

Suppes also noted that the jump in lunch debt

separate occasions during the past three years, and also have a disability. In 2017, there were 701 chronically homeless people in Denver County.

These increases are likely linked to the rise in Denver home prices, said Cathy Alderman, vice president of communications and public policy at the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless.

“The cost of living in the Denver metro area is out of reach for so many people,” Alderman said. “People cannot find places to live that they can afford, and some are getting pushed out of the homes they’ve been in for years because rents are increasing so substantially.”

This increase in both rent and property taxes is especially problematic for those who are living on fixed income and are unable to budget more for housing, she said.

As a result, many of these people turn to shelters. Others continue to pay for housing but sacrifice transportation, health care or food in its place—which, Alderman said, may cause its own set of problems.

“One of the biggest concerns we’re seeing is how undernourished so many children are,” she said, “and how difficult that is for them in terms of educational attainment, social development and emotional development.”

According to the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative, households with one or more children account for 710 of the people experiencing homelessness in 2018.

To address this issue, Bates set up the food box in her yard, which she advertises through word of mouth. Further, she vol-

unteers as assistant director at Joy’s Kitchen, a Denver food pantry that often sets up shop at Westwoods Community Church, 7700 W. Woodard Drive in Lakewood.

The pantry also hands out food at different Denver locations, posted on its website, www.joyskitchen.org. Between these and its regular location, the pantry distributes approximately 45,000 pounds of food per week, according to Bates.

To complete such a large task, the pantry is “constantly looking for volunteers,” she said, encouraging those interested to get involved.

Likewise, anyone can contribute to the cause by setting up his or her own food box, said Bates, who set up her box with the help of her family.

“My dad and stepfather built the box, and we put it in the cement ourselves,” she said. “Then my daughter did a painting of Pikachu on it.”

Shortly after, Bates’ father set up a food box at his home in Wheat Ridge, located off of West 38th Avenue and Jay Street.

Today, the food boxes practically run on their own. Bates doesn’t have to do much more than check that the donated food is usable, which she estimated takes her less than half an hour per week.

Even so, with people stopping by the pantry every day, this initiative and others like it can make all the difference, Alderman said.

“Having those partners on the ground is really important,” she said. “It really does take a community to address the issues of homelessness and hunger.”

That’s because before the lunch-shaming policy, many district schools maintained separate accounts to cover meal costs for students who couldn’t pay. While the district didn’t track the total meal costs covered by those special accounts, it would have pushed the total debt above the $13,000 that was left districtwide at the end of the 2016-17 year.

After the lunch-shaming policy took effect, most schools eliminated their separate accounts to cover unpaid lunches, sending more meal debt to be covered at the district level than in years past.

“Clearly there was growth, probably significant growth in unpaid debt, but it’s hard to tell how much” since all the separate school-based accounts that had paid it before didn’t exist anymore, said Suppes.

Creating a musical empire What to expect from the upcoming Grandoozy music festival

Superfly, a New York-based festival producer, has had its eyes on Denver as the setting for its latest project for the past five years. This month, those dreams become reality when Grandoozy opens at the Overland Park Golf Course for the first of what the company hopes will be a longterm music festival.

Superfly is the company behind Bonnaroo in Tennessee and Outside Lands in San Fransisco, two festivals have been around for 16 and 10 years, respectively. For David Erlich, executive producer of Grandoozy and executive director of the Denver Theatre District, the festival is more than just an opportunity to celebrate music — it’s a means to bring the community together.

Superfly is “not looking to do something for a couple years, they’re looking to build an institution,” he said. “The community’s been an enormous ally and strength for us.”

Grandoozy will be held at the Overland Park Golf Course at 1801 S. Huron St. from Sept.

14-16. In addition to the three music stages, the festival will have 30 food vendors, liquor samples, 18 breweries, an outdoor sports area and more.

“I think we got a little lucky because Kendrick Lamar is one of the most important artists in America today, Stevie Wonder is a legend and Florence and the Machine are one of the best festival bands you could possibly see,” he said.

“As a first-year festival, and that kind of diversity as well, it just doesn’t happen that often.”

Working with community Capacity for the festival is 80,000 each day, but Erlich estimated that in the first year Grandoozy will have between 15,000 and 20,000 people attend daily.

Because of the large attendance, Erlich encourages people to find alternate means of getting to the festival. The festival will have a free bike valet. The golf course is close to the Evans and Broadway light-rail stations — the latter will have a free shuttle to the festival.

People in Boulder, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs can also purchase tickets for a regional shuttle.

Erlich and the Superfly team also are putting together a foundation that will give back to the community. Per Superfly’s contract with the city, $1 of every ticket sold will go into a community fund.

Mara Owen, co-president of the Overland Park Neighborhood Accociation with Amy Razzaque, said Erlich came to several meetings in order to make sure concerns from residents were being addressed. The association decided to remain neutral on the festival, but Owen said several members of the neighborhood supported Grandoozy at council meetings.

Superfly also made sure neighborhood members were present during parking committees and other groups as details of the festival were worked out.

Owen said the organizers did not hold back details and made sure Overland Park knew there might be some kinks to work out in the first year.

“We’ve had what I would consider an extensive amount of outreach,” she said. “They’ve been really honest and open.”

For the past two years, Erlich has been working with city officials and nearby Registered Neighborhood Organizations (RNO) to build a festival that people can enjoy without disturbing surrounding residents.

The process has been worth it for Erlich, who lives near the Bonnie Brae neighborhood.

Working with the community to find local restaurants, brewers and distillers has led him to businesses he did not know existed.

“It’s comprehensive, and it’s not easy. It takes a lot of time,” he said, “but I will tell you, it’s been incredibly rewarding to get to know the community. (Overland is) a hidden gem in Denver.”

This group started meeting more recently and will help make sure things continue to go well.

Scouting for a venue Finding Overland Park was an adventure, Erlich said.

When he first met Superfly founder Rick Farman five years ago, the pair spent two years searching for the perfect location for Grandoozy. What’s ideal about Overland Park is that it has history as the oldest golf course in Denver. It is also surrounded by an industrial area and Santa Fe Drive, which can both help diffuse noise from the shows. While Erlich said it is unlikely they will hit 50,000 attendees per day in the festival’s first year, the golf course is sizable enough that it can hold large groups of people as the event grows.

Stages will face the industrial section of the neighborhood, away from the residential section along the southern border, Erlich said.

Supefly has also worked with the city to ensure people won’t park in the neighborhood during the festival. Area residents will have hanging tags on their cars to show they live there.

The company’s outreach within the community and dedication to answering questions has helped move the festival along, but Erlich said it also helped to build good will within the community. While he said the festival won’t be perfect the first year, they are going to keep working with the neighborhoods to improve Grandoozy in the years to come.

“We focused very clearly on how to we protect that southern neighborhood from issues,” Erlich said. “If you start listening to people in the beginning, then they’ll give you some leeway that you’ll be able to deal with problems.”

Local pet store helps animals find a forever home Annual adoption event set for Sept. 9 on Pearl Street Staff Report For more than 10 years, Sue Green and Nancy Martin have worked with rescue agencies around the state, hoping to connect animals to a family that will love them.

The pair co-owns The Whole Cat & Dogs Too, a pet shop at 1562 S. Pearl St. The event usually has about 10 different rescue organizations. In the past, Green said they have worked with Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue, Big Dog Huge Paws and Kindness Ranch Animal Sanctuary, a Wyomingbased nonprofit that helps former research animals find a home.

The Sept. 9 adoption event, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is held in the 1400 block of South Pearl Street at the same time as the South Pearl Farmers Market.

Green said they try to find smaller animal rescue organizations to work with for the adoption event. The smaller rescue groups often foster animals, versus keeping them in shelters. This means the organization can get a good feel for the animal’s personality.

“There’s a lot of these smaller groups that have great animals,” she said.

In addition to adoptions, the event helps people learn about volunteer or animal fostering opportunities if they are not ready to permanently keep a pet.

ganizations have a longer adoption process that includes home visits to ensure people have the right yard space.

While the dogs tend to steal the show, Green said cat rescue groups also attend and, sometimes rabbit rescue organizations will be there.

Green and Martin have been running The Whole Cat for 22 years.

Updated rule allows wine and beer in Denver parks New policy takes effect Jan. 1 under a one-year pilot program Staff Report Starting next year, full-strength beer and wine will be allowed in Denver parks, as the pilot for a new policy begins.

The Parks and Recreation Department is updating its alcohol policy to ensure rules are the same across all parks. Previously, full-strength alcohol was allowed in some parks while only 3.2 percent beer cans were allowed in others.

The policy still does not allow glass items into parks — all beverages must be consumed in cans.

Cynthia Karvaski, a spokesperson for the Parks and Recreation Department, said the department board recommended the policy be signed by executive director Allegra “Happy” Haynes during a July 11 meeting. The new alcohol policy will start on Jan. 1 and run through the end of the year. At that time Karvaski said the parks department, Denver Police and other city entities involved such as permitting offices, will review the policy to see

if changes need to be made.

No alcohol can be sold in Denver parks without permits and licensing from the city.

For more information on the new policy, go to https://bit.ly/2KBibYd In a letter to Haynes, Maggie Price and Cindy Johnstone, co-chairs of the Parks and Recreation Committee of the Denver Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation, expressed concerns about the new policy, specifically regarding those permits. While the letter stated they would not make an official stand until the pilot period ends at the end of next year, the pair said they disagreed with the lack of a limit on alcohol and special events permits within the parks.

“The number of alcohol events in all parks on any day can significantly increase the need for supervision and enforcement,” they wrote.

“There simply are not enough rangers to cover our parks to enforce the alcohol policy.”

The alcohol policy was first written in 2007.

During a city council Land Use, Transportation and Infrastructure committee meeting on June 26, Haynes told councilmembers that Parks and Recreation wanted to update the policy to make the permitting process less complicated and to have a single rule across all parks.

A new playground — replacing an older nearby play area in the north end— opened Aug. 18 between the two lakes of Washington Park.

The park, at South Downing Street and East Louisiana Avenue, is one of the most used in the state, said Scott Gilmore, manager of parks with Denver’s Parks and Recreation Department, which will be decommissioning the older playground.

The city will reach out to the community to decide what to do with the space.

The new playground is built from repurposed wood and was just one project slated for Washington Park. Gilmore said the city is putting in a new basketball court next spring.

Before Mayor Michael B. Hancock cut the ribbon for the new playground, councilmembers Jolon Clark and Paul Kashmann spoke to the group of children and parents assembled to celebrate the opening.

Clark grew up in the Washington Park neighborhood and said he was a kid when the playground on the north side was built. Now, his children will get to enjoy the new one.

“It’s a real treat for me,” he said.

His art teacher handed him the boards and told him to paint. The mural ended up hanging in the main office at East for the next five years.

“Art just felt like I was wired to do something there,” said Nahulu, who lives in Washington Park and has been painting in Denver for the past several decades.

After he graduated from East, Nahulu began attending the Art Institute of Colorado.

He would skateboard to the bars and restaurants where he worked. The owner of Rick’s Dragon 76 is a New York-based artist. He came to River North to participate in the 2017 Crush Walls event.

A

HOW QUIDDITCH IS PLAYED As in the books, there are four positions: a keeper, three chasers, two beaters and a seeker.

Keepers guard the goals. Chasers are on the offensive and try to score points by throwing the quaffle, or in this case a volleyball, through the hoops. Beaters throw dodgeballs, which act as bludgers from the books, to try and stop chasers from scoring. The seeker is in charge of finding the snitch — in the book the snitch is a small golden ball with wings that flies at incredibly fast speeds — which is worth 150 points. In real life, a person runs around with a tennis ball tied to their shorts to represent the snitch.

While some players stick to position, others like Mile High Quidditch Club player Brantlee Cass try different positions before settling on one. Cass grew up in Colorado and started playing quidditch at Arizona State University. Knowing the positions helped him understand the game as a whole.

“I feel like you understand the game a lot more once you understand all the positions,” he said.

“If people are willing to make that commute and that commitment, we can play on tournaments together,” Bihlmeyer said.

The team practices on Sundays at Cheesman Park, but will start practicing twice a week if it can recruit 14 players, Bihlmeyer said. At a practice in early August, just four players showed up. At others, as many as 11 come.

The MHQC is built on the foundation of the Denver Dementors, a team that started in 2011. Bihlmeyer, a former Dementor, said the team wanted a more inclusive name since players drive to the weekly practices at Cheesman Park from as far as Colorado Springs and Grand Junction.

Denver natives Nhean and Devaughn Gamlin started playing together while attending the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

Gamlin said his dream is to eventually play in a World Cup event. Instead of playing tournaments on a local team, Gamlin turned to the Fighting Farmers, made up of quidditch players throughout the West who cannot find local teams. The team does not hold weekly practices since many of the players don’t live in the same area. Gamlin calls it the “pick-up all-star team,” but the drawback is players have not played together before, making strategy all but impossible.

For Gamlin, strategy is one of the best parts of the game.

“Games can get tactical,” he said. “You have to use your brain.”

Because Colorado is such a large state, Gamlin said it can be difficult to reach out to players and build a team that’s interested in more than just pickup games every so often.

But the work is worth it as Gamlin plays in a Sunday scrimmage, coaching other people on the finer points of the game.

“Keeping numbers around is tough,” he said. “It’s been hard, but it’s been awesome.”

The tournament features collegiate and community teams. In the April 2018 event, 88 teams competed. It was the 11th U.S. Quidditch Cup. Players can also join international leagues for the World Cup. The 2018 World Cup was held in Florence, Italy, from June 27 to July 1. The World Cup is run by the International Quidditch Association.

Ten years later, the event has expanded to 29 teams. The U.S. team took home the cup this year.

It is the team’s third championship. The U.S. also won in 2012 and 2014.

Mailbox theft can lead to fraud Collection boxes in Platt Park, Washington Park have been broken into Staff Report In July, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service began to see an uptick in damage to blue mail collection boxes in the south central part of Denver. The boxes were being broken into with mail potentially being stolen.

Eric Manuel, a postal inspector and public information officer with the Denver branch of the inspection service, said the Platt Park and Washington Park neighborhoods have been hit the hardest. One of the biggest obstacles with these investigations, he said,

is making sure people report it to the right place.

“That’s the first challenge — they don’t know that we exist,” Manuel said.

Any crimes involving mail or the postal service, is a federal issue. Crimes involving mail in particular go to Postal Inspection.

Oftentimes, people who are stealing mail are looking for information to steal someone’s identity, Manuel said.

Any stolen mail, whether it’s out of a personal mailbox or a neighborhood blue postal box, needs to be reported to Postal Inspection. People should also report the theft to their local police department because the crimes may be connected to an open investigation already happening, Manuel said.

Postal Inspection has been working to reach out on the most recent damages on

Nextdoor, an online networking service for neighborhoods. While the page helps to inform neighborhoods about the postal break-ins, it also can help inspectors find potential victims who may not have known about the issue.

With new technology, most people are notified by their banks when fraudulent activity has happened. Banks can often clear up the issue right away. From there, Manuel said victims should still file a report with police to help prevent it from happening again. The difficult part is knowing where your information was stolen. While some information can be stolen via the mail, there also are data breaches happening to retailers such as the one that affected Target customers in 2013.

If people are worried their mail is being stolen, Manuel said the safest options are to take outgoing items directly to a post office or hand it to a carrier. If people are using blue boxes, Manuel said it’s best to drop mail off right before the last pickup time, otherwise the mail sits in the box until a carrier gets it. This makes the mail item vulnerable to theft.

DU Law rolls out hybrid format Staff report Students in the professional part-time JD program at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law can now complete their required classes through a combination of online instruction and weekend on-campus classes.

The hybrid format is effective for the fall 2018 semester, helping make the program,

which is ranked 14th by U.S. News & World Report, more accessible to students with professional or familial commitments.

First-year students enrolled in the program come to Denver on eight weekends each semester for in-class sessions, and the remaining instruction is provided online, in an asynchronous format capable of being accessed on each student’s own schedule.

Independent bookstores here to stay Shops offer out-of-print texts, bring character to shopping experience

DENVER METRO INDIE BOOKSTORES Plenty of options exist for readers who love supporting independent bookstores. According to newpages.com, which produces guides for literary publications, programs and stores, here are some located in the Denver metro area:

Heidi Herman scanned through the children’s book section at the Littleton branch of Denver’s Tattered Cover Bookstore, while her son, Maddox, 10, sat on the floor flipping through a book about LEGOs. When they go to a bookstore, the Littleton family said, it’s Tattered Cover.

“I like the small feel,” Herman said, “and we’re pretty big on supporting local businesses.”

When Amazon burst onto the scene in the 1990s and as digital books grew in popularity, speculation swirled that the death of independent bookstores like Tattered Cover and reading as people knew it was imminent.

That belief has since been, mostly, debunked. Independent bookstores are still here. They’re still selling hard copies of texts across genres. And they have a loyal customer base, owners say.

Still, there’s no doubt that models like Amazon’s or of large retailers such as Barnes & Noble affected business for independent bookstores, say indie shop owners in the Denver metro area, both in the used and new book industries.

And Amazon has begun delving into the brick-andmortar side of retail in recent years, including the announcement it will open a store in Lone Tree at Park Meadows mall in the near future.

All-female team leads theater into new season

The managers of Cherry Creek Theatre (CCT) have made an unprecedented move in the company’s history — some say in the history of all of Denver’s theater community: They have hired an all-female team of directors for the upcoming 2019 season.

Since the curtain rose on the CCT’s first production in 2011, the company has only had three female directors out of 24 total. The company’s 2019 season includes three shows that will be performed at the Pluss Theatre of the Mizel Arts and Cultural Center at 350 S. Dahlia St. in the Virginia Vale neighborhood.

Denver theaters have hired female directors in the past.

Susie Snodgrass, the first female artistic producer at CCT, said the difference here is she and CCT managers have consciously made the decision to hire an all-female team for the entire season.

“We have incredible male talent in Denver,” Snodgrass said. “I don’t ever want to speak against that. But right now, I have chosen to help women along.”

Both Sheila Ivy Traister and Billie McBride found the Denver theater community difficult to break into when they first started working here as actresses and directors.

McBride, who will be directing CCT’s “Tuesdays with Morrie” in the fall, said 20 years ago, there were not nearly as many options when it came to theater.

Traister, who will direct “Other Desert Cities,” CCT’s spring production, said many

theaters could be doing more to be inclusive.

“Opportunities for women and people of color have certainly improved in recent years, and the concept of inclusion and diversity is on the lips of most of the prominent companies in town,” Traister said. “There is still a gap in practice, and there needs to be a willingness on the part of existing establishments to go Traister outside their comfort zone, to seek new and different stories — and new and different faces to tell those stories — to become truly inclusive.”

The culture now is supportive of female directors, according Kelly Van Oosbree, who is a director and choreographer.

She will be directing CCT’s 2019 season opener, Stephen McBride Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music.”

“I have often been recommended by other female directors/choreographers for projects, and I have done the same in turn,” she said. “I think Colorado theater companies want the best person for the job and, luckily, our community Oosbree is blessed with some really fantastic women who can get things done.”

When it comes to staffing, Snodgrass said she’s not going to hire a woman just because of

her gender. “She has to be good,” she said. “I seek those people out.”

Talent is only half the battle, she said, noting she also asked her directors to take the job because they’re passionate about the shows.

“If you don’t like what you’re doing, it will show on stage,” Snodgrass said. “If you’re excited to put it on stage, your actors are going to get that and your staff are going to get that.”

The 2019 season opens on Jan. 24 and includes Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music,” “Tuesdays with Morrie” and “Other Desert Cities.”

According to Van Oosbree, “A Little Night Music” has not been produced in the Denver area in at least 15 years. Both Van Oosbree and Traci Kern, the musical director, are thrilled to start working on Sondheim’s challenging material and find skilled actors and musicians who are up to the task.

The characters of “Other Desert Cities” are scripted with an explicitly white family demographic, Traister said, inhibiting her from choosing a diverse group of actors like she

would prefer. However, she is excited to dive into the complex issues this play addresses such as race, class distinction and politics, among many others.

McBride is looking for the perfect duo to cast in leading male roles in “Tuesdays with Morrie’s.” McBride plans to have a loose idea of what she wants to do with the show before casting and then craft the rest of the story with her actors during rehearsal. She said she thinks it will be interesting to see what she brings to the production as a woman directing two men.

Snodgrass, Kern and McBride all agree women are different from men in the way they think and the emotional perspective they bring to their work. They bring a side to artistry that’s different, Snodgrass said. Kern added that she hopes more theaters will take steps to add diversity.

“It has been fantastic to be on a team with talented women,” Kern said, “to be celebrated for that and, hopefully, be the start of that becoming more the normal, not a novelty.”

Personal touch sets indies apart Len Vlahos, co-owner of Tattered Cover Bookstore, said he isn’t worried about competition from Amazon or the future of independents, a sentiment echoed by other shop owners.

What keeps independent bookstores going, he points out, is the customer service, the personal touch of selling items that customers might not find at a corporate-run store relying on the New York Times best-seller list.

“I’ve been in one of the Amazon stores,” Vlahos said. “It’s a different model. How they display books, how they price books.”

Tattered Cover started in Denver in 1971 but today has grown to five locations and holds more than 500 events annually. The business may be larger than many independent bookstores, but it focuses on most of the core values driving shops of all sizes, Vlahos said.

“We’re rooted in the Denver community,” he said. “Our buyers who buy books for the stores live in and around Denver.”

Their selection of books also differs by location and aims to cater to each demographic.

Buyers at the Aspen Grove shopping center in Littleton, for example, may look to different products than those on Colfax, Vlahos said.

There’s also the warm cup of coffee, the comfortable couch that begs you to stay and special events for people of all ages.

Jim Norris is the co-owner of Mutiny Information Café on South Broadway in Denver, which has operated as a bookstore for about 30 years, under different names and owners.

He believes Amazon is “counterproductive to the community spirit” of independent bookstores and that large chain stores don’t have the same character as indies, he said.

“They’re deliberately made to be generic, so they’re easy to go in and out of,” he said.

Mutiny is “super eclectic,” and a space where shoppers can find comics, used books, vinyl records and visit the in-house coffee bar. Essentially, Norris said, it’s a “pop culture playground.”

Holly Brooks has owned Capitol Hill Books since 2005, but like Mutiny, the shop has sat in its corner store location across from the state Capitol for decades, she said. Brooks is the third owner.

“Frankly, most books are out of print,” she said. “The publishers have all shrunk down and consolidated and they can’t afford to publish something that’s not a best-seller.”

When a book is no longer published, that’s where independent used bookstores come into the picture, Brooks said, offering recycled copies not available elsewhere.

At least once a week, she said, and including the morning she spoke to Colorado Community Media, Brooks gets a call from one of Tattered Cover’s locations asking if they have a book a customer of theirs can’t find.

Rebrand is underway for ‘Koch brothers’ moniker Powerful conservative network losing one voice as ailing billionaire steps away

The conservative Koch brothers are no more — even if they remain a political powerhouse.

The Democrats’ super villains for much of the last decade have quietly launched a rebranding effort that may vanquish the “Koch brothers” moniker from American politics.

The catalyst came earlier in the year when ailing billionaire conservative David Koch stepped away from the family business, leaving older brother Charles as the undisputed leader of the Kochs’ web of expanding political and policy organizations.

There were already few, if any, clearly identifiable links between the Kochs and their most active spinoff organizations such as Americans for Prosperity, Freedom

Partners or the LIBRE Initiative.

But in the days after the younger billionaire’s retreat, company officials quickly began pushing journalists across the country to change references from “Koch brothers” in their coverage to “Koch network” or one of their less-recognizable entities.

Asked about the shift on June 28, Koch’s chief lieutenants explained that 82-year-old Charles Koch was always far more involved with their political efforts than his ailing brother. The elder Koch addressed the shift directly as he welcomed hundreds of donors to an invitation-only summit at a luxury resort in the Rocky Mountains.

“I am not getting weak in the knees. ...

Truly I am not,” Charles Koch said with a smile. He added: “We’re just getting started.”

Regardless of its name, the conservative network remains one of the nation’s most influential political forces, a conservative powerhouse simultaneously playing the long- and short-game in a way that ensures it will remain a dominant force long after President Donald Trump is gone.

And in sharp contrast to the Republican president who is eager to put his name on his accomplishments, the Kochs are happy

to do it in the dark.

While much of the network operates out of sight, the Charles Koch Foundation announced June 28 that it would begin publicly posting all multiyear grant agreements with universities. Last year, the foundation gave $90 million for projects on 300 campuses.

An estimated 500 Koch donors — each having committed at least $100,000 annually — gathered for the weekend “seminar” that featured a handful of elected officials and high-profile influencers.

As is customary for the bi-annual meetings, guests were required to give up their cell phones during some presentations. And while The Associated Press joined a handful of media organizations allowed to witness some activities, photos and videos were strictly prohibited.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Tennessee Rep. Marsha Blackburn, both Republican Senate candidates, led the list of elected officials on hand. Senate Republican whip John Cornyn of Texas, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin were also on the guest list.

The money behind the Kochs’ push to transform education, philanthropy, immigration, health care, tax laws, courts, government regulation, prisons and the economy has long been cloaked in secrecy.

Koch officials have vowed to spend between $300 million and $400 million to shape the 2018 midterm elections. But there’s no way to verify how or where the money is spent because most of its organi-

zations are registered as nonprofit groups, which aren’t required to detail their donors like traditional political action committees.

While they have long been closely aligned with the Republican Party’s farright flank, they oppose the Trump administration’s policies on spending, trade and immigration.

On June 28, network leaders seized on Trump’s push to apply billions of dollars in tariffs on America’s top trading partners.

The burgeoning trade war has sparked an outcry from business leaders across the nation, and in a new video Charles Koch lashes out at what he calls the “destructive” rise of “protectionism.”

Koch official Brian Hooks warned that, on trade and immigration, “the divisiveness of this White House is causing long-term damage.”

Democrats who invested extraordinary time and resources into attacking the Koch brothers in recent years concede that, in the era of Trump at least, the billionaire industrialists are no longer the left’s No. 1 enemy.

Adam Jentleson, who previously worked for former Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, said Koch’s quiet rebranding effort represents “a small victory.”

“Sen. Reid was always very clear that drawing the Koch brothers out of the shadows was a big part of his strategy,” Jentleson said. “He thought people deserved to know who was behind the dark money.

This seems like a recognition that they’re uncomfortable being out front and are scurrying to get back in the shadows.”

Community leaders oppose rollback of clean car standards Colorado Air Quality Control Commission to discuss low-emission vehicle standards

Several Colorado leaders are vocally defending the state’s ability to protect air quality through vehicle regulation.

“We need to remember that policies made at the federal level impact communities across our country,” said Maria De Cambra, Westminster’s mayor pro tem. “The Trump administration’s rollbacks would undermine our efforts. We must protect the progress we’ve made, and that means leaving the clean car standards in place.”

De Cambra was one of five community leaders and elected officials who spoke at a July 31 press conference in Lakewood opposing the Trump administration’s EPA and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rollback of clean car standards. She was joined

On Aug. 2, President Donald Trump’s administration announced plans to roll back emissions and fuel-economy standards for car model years 2022-25 and attempt to override the ability for states to set their own stricter standards to protect clean air. The administration argues that halting fuel-efficiency “could save $500 billion in ‘societal costs,’ avert thousands of highway fatalities and save Americans an estimated $2,340 on the cost of each new car,” according to an Aug. 2 article published in the Washington Post.

However, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed an executive order on June 19 titled “Maintaining Progress on Clean Vehicles.” It directs the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to develop a rule that establishes a Colorado Low Emission Vehicle program, then propose the rule to

“Basically, the Low Emission Vehicle standards currently under discussion would keep Colorado … on the current standards, even if the federal standards are weakened,” Smith said. If these advanced clean car standards are adopted, he added, they would “protect Colorado from whatever happens in D.C. from these rollbacks.”

America’s clean car standards were finalized in 2012 under then-President Barack Obama.

These standards require automakers to ensure that motor vehicles — cars, pickup trucks and SUVs, for example — are more fuel efficient and achieve ongoing improvements.

The Obama administration’s rules “mandate an average fuel economy of 54.5 miles per gallon for the 2025 model year,” while the Trump administration’s proposal “would freeze the increase of average fuel economy standards after 2021 at about 37 miles per gallon,” according to the Washington Post.

“Ozone pollution damages developing lungs, potentially causing health issues that can last their whole lives,” Clanahan said. “In order to keep our children healthy, we need clean car standards that reduce air pollution and all the damage it does to our children.”

Colorado is one of 12 states and the District of Columbia that have followed California’s lead to set its own tailpipe restrictions to try to curb greenhouse-gas emissions — protected by a legal waiver granted under the 1970 Clean Air Act. “Maintaining our Colorado way of life as our population grows is a challenge,” Gutwein said at the press conference. But air quality is “something that matters now and into the future.”

program or to mandate the sale of electric vehicles.”

However, Smith believes that zero-emission vehicle standards could give Colorado consumers more options for electric vehicle purchases and help push down the cost as the volume of sales increases.

This would “further contribute to reduced air pollution and carbon pollution,” Smith said, “and accelerate the build-out of Colorado’s 21st century electric vehicle infrastructure.”

The Air Quality Control Commission will discuss the low-emission vehicle standards during its regular August meeting, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Aug. 16 in the Sabin/Cleere Conference Rooms at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, 4300 Cherry Creek Drive South, Denver.

Ross Erickson, 29, started climbing fourteeners — mountains with more than 14,000 feet elevation — eight years ago when he moved to Colorado.

“Illinois doesn’t have any,” he said jokingly about why he waited to climb a mountain of that height.

At first, he saw the fourteeners as training hikes for the Colorado Trail, which he was preparing to hike. As the years went on, he advanced to more technical mountains. As a rock climber and a hiker, he was inspired to push his limits.

Now, he’s just shy of 50 fourteeners climbed and shares his lessons learned at the REI outdoor school, where he teaches rock climbing, on- and off-trail map and compass use, and wilderness survival.

For him, the biggest thing he wants students to remember is to always be prepared.

“Know your skill level and remember that you are in the mountains and things can get real,” Erickson said.

In 2016 and 2017 the Alpine Rescue team, which performs rescues in Clear Creek County, averaged 45 missions per year on one of the four fourteeners in the area — Grays Peak, Torreys Peak, Mount Bierstadt and Mount Evans.

In 2008 and 2009 the team averaged 15 missions per year. That’s an increase of 300 percent over the past eight years.

Dawn Wilson, of Alpine Rescue, said that there are a couple things that get people in trouble more than others while they are hiking mountains of that height.

“When people go past their ability, that’s when you get into trouble,” Wilson said.

“People die. You don’t mess around with these fourteeners.”

Wilson reminds people to be prepared with the proper gear, to tell someone where you are going and your estimated time of return, and to know your capabilities.

One spot Alpine Rescue was called to several times this summer was the sawtooth that connects Mount Bierstadt and Mount Evans.

The number of rescues performed on Front Range fourteeners has also gone up as the population in Denver and the surrounding areas has increased. On a sunny day in July, about 3,000 people can be found on Mount Bierstadt.

In July 2017, Colorado Fourteener Initiative released the second edition of its “Fourteener Hiking Use and Economic Impact” report, which estimated that 311,000 hiker use days occurred on Colorado’s fourteeners in 2016 — a 19 percent increase over 2015.

Cooks settle beef in Denver Burger Battle Charities are big winner in yearly culinary contest

Seven years ago, Denver resident Jeremy Kossler sat down at the counter of Crave Real Burgers, a restaurant in Castle Rock.

He wasn’t in the restaurant by chance, and he wasn’t just any customer — he was the founder of the Denver Burger Battle and he’d come with an invitation.

“He just sat at the counter and we talked all lunch long,” said Jeff Richard, who owns Crave with his wife, Jeryn. “And he’s like: ‘I want to invite you guys.’ ” Richard and his team decided to take that invitation, with ideal results.

“We showed up and got third place the first year, and then we started knocking it out of the park,” he said. “So we’ll see what happens this year.”

‘Scouts’ help find best burgers Founded by Kossler in 2010, the Denver Burger Battle is an annual event that invites about 15 Colorado restaurants to cook their best burger and compete for votes of judges and attendees.

This year, the event took place at University of Colorado-Denver’s Tivoli Quad Park on the evening of Aug. 2, drawing about 1,600 attendees.

Since its first year, the event has raised more than $100,000 for the Kossler Founda-

tion, which helps fund several charities in the Denver area.

Kossler sold the event to Team Player Productions in November 2017, but he still remains involved by choosing which restaurants will be invited.

“We’ll try about 70 burgers a year throughout the state of Colorado,” Kossler said. “I used to do it myself, and then I was like ‘OK, I’m gonna die if I do this.’”

Kossler has since recruited “scouts” for the battle, many of whom are burger fanatics he has befriended over the years.

“They’ll go out and try five, Kossler six burgers, and then write to me,” he said. “And now I know I kind of have a burger that the scouts say is really, really good.”

Not long before this year’s event, those scouts were in Telluride, trying the food at Steamies Burger Bar. “We got a phone call and they were like ‘Your food’s amazing, we want you guys to be a part of this,’” said Stanya Gorraiz, who owns the restaurant with her husband, James.

“We were just so honored to be included.”

The scouts determined that Steamies would add variety to the competition. The restaurant, which steams its burgers, is “the only one in America doing what we’re doing in this way,” Gorraiz said.

Technique wasn’t the only factor that set Steamies apart. The restaurant’s booth was a family operation, with members representing three generations of Gorraiz’s family, includ-

The restaurant did not place in this year’s battle. But the family was enjoying spreading the word about the new Steamies’ location in Fort Collins, which is scheduled to open this fall.

“Being with my family and rallying together, it’s just really special,” Gorraiz said.

And “getting the word out is really exciting.”

‘We’re part of a club’ Likewise, Crave — which this year took second in the People’s Choice category for its jalapeño cream cheese hamburger concoction — also has expanded since its first Burger Battle, with additional locations in Highlands Ranch and Colorado Springs.

For Kossler, seeing the restaurant grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of the event, he said.

“We were able to expose them to 2,000 burger-obsessed people, and in some ways, that led to them getting more popular and opening more restaurants,” he said. “I love that.”

As for the team at Crave, the Burger Battle isn’t just a great opportunity for exposure—it’s become a tradition.

“Almost all year long, we’re always saying ‘What are we doing for the battle, what are we doing for the battle?’ ” Richard said. “We already know what we want to do next year.”

Across the board, all of the participants agreed: One of the competition’s best facets is the community of restaurants it creates.

“All the restauranteurs are super-cool,” Gorraiz said. “We feel like we’re part of a club.”

WHO WON? At the end of the event, the Battle announced the winners of this year’s competition. Crave Real Burgers took second place in the People’s Choice competition with its Pop Top Camper Burger, a hamburger with jalapeño cream cheese that is now featured on the restaurant’s menu for a limited time.
