A cookie entrepreneur whose heart is in the Right place Colorado - My Jungle Gym I’ve made a lot of really great friends in Colorado. I have always thought it was really beautiful. I like exploring the mountains, walking the trails around Westminster city and experimenting with paddle boarding.

I love to explore the outdoors and go to the gym. I’ve participated in Race For the Cure every Mother’s Day for more than five years.

I played volleyball every week with friends before coronavirus. I’m dextrocardio, which means that my heart is on the right side instead of the left.

My Travel Plans I love traveling. I was scheduled to go to Italy, France and England in March, but the trip was canceled due to COVID-19.

Anythink’s annual summer program for all ages returns with opportunities to Read Think Do. mySummer encourages young learners to stay engaged during summer months. This year’s program runs from June 15 to July 31.

Each person who signs up will receive a journal by mail to record ideas and doodles. In addition, Anythink staff will share weekly videos that provide prompts for participants to write, draw and think critically.

The videos will be posted to Anythink’s website and will be available on the library’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.

Citing health concerns and COVID-19, Adams County has cancelled the annual Stars and Stripes Independence Day celebration.

“We did not take this decision to cancel our annual Stars & Stripes event lightly,” County Manager Raymond Gonzales said in a press release.

“However, safety is our utmost concern, and after many discussions, we have decided to forgo this year’s event out of an abundance of caution.”

Adams County traditionally celebrates Independence Day on July 3 with its Stars and Stripes event at Riverdale Regional Park. The annual

event, which would be in it’s fifth year, drew more than 12,000 residents for the festival and fireworks in 2019.

“One of the key ingredients for a successful event like this is to bring the community together as one and celebrate our great nation,” County Commissioners Chair Emma Pinter said in the release. “Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, there is not a safe way to do so this year. We encourage our residents to have a safe Independence Day at home with their families and friends.”

County staff is already planning the Independence Day celebration for 2021, according to the release.

Adams County and local chambers of commerce are offering a series of mini-grants to help local businesses cope with COVID-19.

The grants are being offered in three small businesses categories: general operations, technology upgrades and compliance issues.

“While loans work for some small businesses, others may not have the capacity to take on another debt, so by providing mini-grants with the CARES Act funds, we can continue to help our most vulnerable small businesses, which in turn helps stimulate the economy,” County Commissioner Mary Hodge said in a written statement. “We realize businesses may have different needs as they navigate the road to recovery, so we are offering grants for multiple categories of use.”

Federal funding for the grants comes from the federal Coronavirus

Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act passed by Congress.

Business operation mini-grants will have a maximum award value of $2,500 and can be used to pay for operational upgrades, building safety enhancements, personal protective equipment and other costs.

Technology upgrade mini-grants have a maximum award value of $1,000 and can be used to purchase point-of-sale terminals and contactless payment systems, touchless entry and exits , temperature screening, and technology needs for the enactment of COVID-19 specific operations plans.

Protest for racial justice draws 65 Northglenn protest offered smaller, calmer march with Black Lives Matter message

Northglenn residents Alex Morgan said she was perfectly ready to stand aside and relinquish leadership of the Black Lives Matter walk she helped organize June 6.

“Our wishes are that we, the organizers, are not centered in this,” Morgan said. “We are white women and we are here to lend support to Black and Indigenous people of color. We acknowledge our own white privilege and if people of color want to step up, we will step aside at a moment’s notice.”

A group of about 65 people gathered in Northglenn’s E.B. Rains park on the windy Saturday morning, walking along Community Center Drive to the Northglenn Justice Center.

The walk was meant to show solidarity with demonstrators around the county seeking to promote racial justice in the wake of the police-related deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmad Arbery, Tony McDade in 2020 and Black people before that.

“We really wanted to make sure our neighborhood is represented, and we are encouraging people to attend events that have been organized by Black and indigenous people of color instead,” Morgan said. “But we did want to offer something locally and offer something smaller for people who are immune-compromised. They can make their voices heard without exposing themselves to too many people.”

They paused at the police station briefly, holding a silent vigil for ten minutes in grass in front of the building before walking back to the park.

There, they held silence for another ten minutes before ending the protest and continuing back on their way.

Morgan said she and co-organizer Lauren Weatherly chose ten minutes on purpose. Other protests around the country have had protesters hold their silence for nine minutes, the amount of time a Minneapolis Police officer kneeling on George Floyd’s neck.

“We felt that as white organizers it would have felt performative to do eight minutes and 46 seconds like other events are doing,” she said. “We decided it would be appropriate to do

to public health agencies.

It was a peaceful walk, with residents carrying signs and chanting “Black Lives Matter” and “Say their names,” answered occasionally by car horn honks of support from passing drivers.

Northglenn City Councilors and police had initially planned to participate in the walk, but Morgan said she wanted to keep the walk separate from the city as much as possible.

Instead of asking police to close the road between the park and Justice Center, protesters kept to the sidewalks.

“We really want this to be for residents,” Morgan said. “The mayor and other city officials agreed that it would be best for residents to be able to share their voices.”

City Councilor Katherine Goff joined the walk as a resident, she said.

“I think racism is systemic in our society and everyone needs to work on it, and include myself in that,” Goff said.

To be eligible, businesses must have 25 or fewer employees, must be located in Adams County, must deal primarily in-person customer interactions and must have been opened before Dec. 31, 2019. Child care providers will be considered by other homebased businesses will not.

The application process opened June 8 and closes June 19.

Restaurants hope outdoor seating will help bottom line

As the state slowly reopens after months of COVID-19 closures and quarantines, one thing is clear for restaurants — dining space outside might not be a economic savior but it certainly helps.

“We’ve added on the dine-in business, but the increase we’ve seen in take-out orders has not decreased.” said Scott Gerlach, general manager at Parry’s Pizza in Northglenn. “So, we are in pretty good shape.”

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced new guidelines for restaurants dine-in service on May 25, allowing them to open with COVID-19 restrictions in place. Those include a limit on how many people can be in the restaurant — 50 people or 50 percent of the original occupancy, whichever number is smaller. It also requires restaurant workers to wear masks at all times and requires the restaurant to keep diners’ tables at least six feet away from each other and spells out strict rules for disinfecting surfaces to help cut down on the spread of the spread of the disease.

But while the disinfecting and social distancing rules apply to every dining areas in a restaurant, outdoor areas — from roofs to patios to sidewalks —

“We have one in front, one on the side, one upstairs and one downstairs,“ he said.

That’s especially good news for Parry’s Pizza, which has four separate outdoor dining areas, Gerlach said. He does not have plans for expanding yet.

“As busy as we are right now, I don’t know if we are going to need to expand beyond that,“ Gerlach said.

“Business has been good enough, I don’t know if the kitchen can handle it, with all the to-go orders we are doing.”

Northglenn, Thornton, Westminster aim to speed restaurant expansions

Local restaurants will get a chance to spread out a little bit — and hopefully make room for extra customers — after city officials voted to let them set up tables and chairs in public parking lots and sidewalks.

Both the Westminster and Northglenn City Councils voted unanimously at their own June 1 meetings to issue temporary licenses for restaurants to use public spaces for outdoor dining. For restaurants with liquor licenses, that includes outdoor liquor service.

The city of Thornton unveiled a similar process earlier in May.

Northglenn’s outdoor dining rules City Manager has the authority to approve temporary licenses for restaurants with and without liquor licenses. The $100 fee for permits for non-liquor establishments and other retail businesses is waived and the city will use its share of federal CARES Act money to reimburse for the Colorado Liquor Enforcement Division’s $150 fee.

Thornton’s outdoor dining rules Temporary Use Permits are not required.

The temporary outdoor dining area must be controlled and monitored and allow for emergency vehicle access, pedestrian access, and ADA-compliant access.

Permits for tents or canopies should be submitted to the Building Inspection Division and Fire Department if the tent is greater than 400 square feet or the canopy is more than 700 square feet.

The new rules make it easier for restaurants to add temporary outdoor dining space, foregoing fees and letting city staff review new applications, rather than a liquor control board. The new rules are designed to shorten application times. In Northglenn’s case, the change lets the City Manager approve temporary permits in a week, rather than waiting for the city’s Liquor License Authority, which meets twice per month.

Gov. Jared Polis updated the current “Safer-at-home” status in May to begin allowing restaurants to reopen for dine-in service under certain restrictions beginning May 27. According to the new rules, restaurants are only allowed to seat 50% of the total occupancy for the dining area or 50 people, whichever is less.

But restaurants with patios or roof dining are allowed to go beyond the “50% or 50 people” rule, leading many restaurants to look for ways to expand — or in some cases, create — outdoor dining areas.

“It’s all been good,“ Gerlach said.

“After the first week in March, our sales skyrocketed and we’ve been busy. And now, we’re even busier since we reopened for dine-in.”

Still worried Peter Richter, owner of the Atlanta Bread Company franchise in Northglenn said is trying to make use of the little outdoor space he has at his disposal. Every second table inside his restaurant is closed to diners’ because of the spacing distance requirement, so the few tables on the patio help.

“We’ve always had that, so I probably would not utilize any additional space out there. I don’t need it,“ Richter said. “But we just put a lot of money into it, because we think more people are going to want to use it. We put in new umbrellas and chairs and added flowers but we’ve had the tables. “ Richter had closed his dining room March 17, the day before the official notice from the State Department of Public Health and Environment required all restaurants, gyms, theaters and casinos to follow suit in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Richter said his restaurant has managed to stay open throughout the quarantine and he has not had to lay off staff, making due with take-out

and delivery orders.

It’s good to have the sit-down service available, and his customers have been very understanding.

“If it stays like this long-term, we’ll be in trouble,“ he said. “But it’s been coming back a little bit and at some time in the future, we have to find a cure or a treatment. And then we can shake hands and give everybody a hug.”

Still, he said his restaurant will not fully recover until more businesses begin opening and hosting gatherings of their own. He relies on catering events from Northglenn to Downtown Denver and those events — from corporate meetings to sales presentations and civic groups — are just not happening now.

“This is just not normal,“ he said.

“Nobody is right now.

Avoiding a free-for-all Dave Samison, owner of Westminster’s 20 Brew Bar at 112th and Sheridan, began putting seating around his entrance for customers last week. His liquor license already allows limited outdoor seating, so he put some tables and bench no more than six feet from the main entrance.

The bar, which sells local craft beers and ax throwing during normal times, is reopening slowly, Samison said.

He’s seen other bars reopen without distancing or masks being warn.

“The hard part for me is finding new ways to open without having things turn into a free-for-all,“ he said. “So, we’re taking baby steps and implementing new things as they come along.”

State relaxes rules for worship houses, gyms, recreation Playgrounds, swimming pools also to open under safer-at-home update

Continuing to strike a balance between public safety and returning to normalcy, Colorado officials have released plans to loosen restrictions on places of worship, organized recreational sports, pools and playgrounds.

Under the changes, gyms can reopen to more patrons.

The updates to the state’s “safer at home” phase of social distancing come as COVID-19’s “reproductive number” — how contagious the disease is in Colorado — has ticked up after months of decline, and the second peak of the virus’ spread may be worse than the first.

“In most scenarios, we project the next peak in infections will be greater than the prior peak in April,” public health scientists led by the Colorado School of Public Health wrote in a May 29 report.

A June 1 extension of the safer-athome order — announced in an executive order titled “Safer at Home and in the Vast, Great Outdoors” — lasts through June but could be extended further.

Seating should be arranged to maintain at least 6 feet in every direction between individuals or parties. A “party” includes members of a household who live together, the guidance says. Outdoors, groups from different households also can worship at least 6 feet apart.

Colorado’s social distancing policies have stemmed the spread of COVID-19, but indicators show progress slowing as the state moves further into a relaxed safer-at-home phase.

Hospitalizations have been declining since mid-April, but the rate of decline is slowing, according to a May 29 report by Colorado public health scientists.

Meanwhile, the disease’s reproductive number — sometimes written “R0” — had fallen from about four in March to below one.

But in early May, it ticked back up toward one, according to the report.

That’s the average number of infections generated by each COVID-19 case — meaning if the reproductive number sits below one, the number of new cases per day is declining.

The report projects that hospital capacity could be exceeded in coming months if social distancing is loosened too much. It also concludes that mask-wearing needs to be maintained and case detection and isolation should be gradually increased, the report says.

“In all scenarios, the epidemic curve is rising … at Aug. 15, the time

Indoor gyms, recreation centers and pools can hold up to 25% capacity, or 50 people — whichever is fewer — per room, as long as people can stay 6 feet apart. Pools are limited to 25% capacity or up to 50 people.

Use of any shared equipment is discouraged, and facilities must ensure all equipment is cleaned and disinfected between each use.

One of public health officials’ goals is to prevent having to return to a stay-at-home order, the June 1 presentation to reporters said. That’s a possibility officials have repeatedly acknowledged.

Gov. Jared Polis announced on June 2 a partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service, which will mobilize more than 800 AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members to support the state’s COVID-19 response through contact tracing and other associated work, according to a governor’s office news release.

“With more than 1,000 contact tracers working in Colorado, the state will be able to address outbreaks more quickly, which will reduce infections and save lives,” the release said.

After several days of protests in Denver over the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers, Gov. Jared Polis spoke about the incident and advised protesters — who marched in large crowds — to be tested for COVID-19.

“What happened to George Floyd was not only wrong; it was brutal, it was inhumane and it was murder,” Polis said at a June 2 news conference.

The governor lamented violent protesters and vandalism distracting from the protest’s “righteous message.”

But, he said: “Property can be cleaned, but the black lives that are taken cannot be replaced or brought back.”

Polis told peaceful protesters he is listening, and “more importantly, I want to work with you.”

Despite Polis’ support for the motivation for protests, he worried about the effect of large demonstrations on the spread of COVID-19 and encouraged participants to get tested in light of their activity. The governor stressed the importance of wearing masks and staying 6 feet from others.

“Health experts tell me (the protests) could result in hundreds of new cases,” Polis said.

The City of Denver has expanded the criteria for its test site at the Pepsi Center in a way that includes those who attended the protests, and those participants should get tested if they develop symptoms — and they also should get tested if they have not developed symptoms about seven days after attending a protest, Polis said.

“That’s the way we can act to (detect) earlier some of the folks who might be contagious without knowing it,” Polis said.

In light of the recent demonstrations and many people returning to work, Denver encourages “any participant who would like a free COVID-19 test” to come to the drive-up testing at the Pepsi Center.

“Only an individual’s name and date of birth need be verified to obtain the test and receive confidential results,” the city said in a news release.

The testing is open to everyone, not just Denver residents, according to Tammy Vigil, a spokeswoman for the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment. There is no cost to anyone, whether they have health insurance or not, Vigil said.

The City of Denver expanded access to testing to anyone potentially exposed to the virus and those heading back to work amid the current phase of recovery in the pandemic.

Beyond policing: Current racial climate is about all of us CROSS CURRENTS

he spread of the Coronavirus coupled with the “Stay at Home” mandates and the economic stress which it then caused due to the shutdown of most of the American economy has stressed the American psyche and strained our tolerance.

To instill yet more stress, anger, anarchy and emotions on Americans, we as a nation have seen and felt the murder of three separate high-profile incidents involving African Americans.

These killings have been compressed over a short time, from late February to the end of May, which has set off a new round of protests, rioting, property damage, hate, grief and the demand for change.

From Ahmaud Arbery’s death on February 23 — which wasn’t revealed until much later

— to Breonna Taylor’s death on March 13 to George Floyd’s cruel death in Minneapolis on May 25, we have witnessed white men killing black people. We have seen white police officers killing a black woman and a black man in separate incidents. Certainly, the death of George Floyd, as vividly seen on video, was the catalyst to this national outcry.

In all three incidents, we ask “why”?

Different motivations among the protesters The riots, protests, destruction of public and private property, disobedience to law enforcement and anger reflect different motivations among different groups in the various protests across America.

In Denver, we have seen the difference in demeanor among the different nights of protests. There are the protesters like Black

Lives Matter who are expressing their rage, distrust of law enforcement and frustration with continued killing of African American males by white police officers. They are demanding a stop to police brutality. Their focus, of course, was triggered by the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

At the same time, there are people attracted to these demonstrations simply to cause harm to law enforcement personnel, destroy public/private property and generally cause disruption. They are the ones who bring guns, knives, baseball bats and spray paint. They simply want to display their rage against society, have their five minutes of “fame” on television and take advantage of the opportunity to cause havoc.

unrest in American cities warrants the deployment of active-duty troops to confront protesters.

But Colorado’s own Cory Gardner, a senator so concerned about his own re-election that he’s abandoned any pretense of possessing a spine, marches in lock-step with the president even when Trump violates the Constitution.

Now, 1,600 troops and military police are unlawfully positioned outside the capital. Has Senator Gardner spoken up about this

militarization of domestic law enforcement? Not a chance. Senator Gardner’s lips move only when the president pulls his strings.

Our state can do better, and we must. Last week’s horror of over 106,000 deaths due to mishandling of the pandemic by an inept president and murder of a Minnesota resident because he was black cannot be repeated. Colorado’s senator must be prepared to speak up. Gardner won’t.

Peaceful protesting is legitimate versus rioting Legitimate peaceful protesting over the killing of George Floyd is certainly understandable and warranted. The horrific scene we saw time and time again on television involving four white Minneapolis police officers causing the death of Floyd should not and cannot go unpunished. Government officials must be held accountable. While the one officer who had his knee in Floyd’s throat for eight-plus minutes has been fired and arrested for Floyd’s death, the other three officers have now been charged as accessories to the crime.

Protesters say all four should be held accountable and I fully agree.

African Americans are justified in their frustrations, anger and distrust over the years of how police officers in some law enforcement agencies have treated black people. I share their lack of faith in those police departments, the police command personnel and elected officials where there has not been fair treatment or equal treatment of minority citizens.

Police killings have trended upward in recent years and black men are more likely to be killed. America is long overdue for a major overhaul of discriminatory attitudes and nactions of minorities by law enforcement personnel where such attitudes and actions exist. Police brutality must end or anarchy will erupt throughout America.

This is my fourth and final dachshund. Knowing that, I look at him with admiration and appreciation each day.

We bunk together; he hogs.

We are rarely separated and when we are I can’t wait to see him. It’s mutual. Anyone who has been welcomed home by their dog knows what this means.

As for allergies, he has a few, as well as some strong dislikes.

He had a reaction to something in our home or environment that resulted in little scab-like bumps on his otherwise impeccable torso.

Lab work showed he is allergic to oats and corn. We had been having midnight snacks of a Kashi oat cereal.

He disfavors rap and considers it

It seems that this ingrained attitude and practice of discrimination toward minorities by a portion of law enforcement personnel is found in many of the core major cities across America. Certainly, New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Denver and Salt Lake City are among the police departments which need major change and reconciliation between law enforcement and the minority communities.

At the same time, I fully acknowledge and understand that there is a disproportionate number of minority males arrested for breaking the law and who become repeat offenders.

The key is finding some middle ground by both sides that does more than just give lip service to equality, respect and unity.

It won’t come overnight. There is no silver bullet to be applied. It is about building relationships in small increments and in turn, building trust and respect.

For example, it was a simple gesture but Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen demonstrated unity, understanding and support when linking arm in arm with protesters marching downtown two Mondays ago. Relationship building must be genuine and stand the test of time. Talk is cheap and will quickly be seen as shallow or fake, without actions to back-up statements made by police leaders and elected officials.

All police departments can stand to emphasize and carry out more training to deal with discrimination, profiling, race relationships and persecution. For the core cities in metropolitan areas as listed above, city and civic leaders should place a strong emphasis on such training.

Parting with objects enveloped in memories is not as difficult as I thought it would be.

If, however, my calculations are wrong and Harry takes the off-ramp before I do, there will be a rhythm of darkness over me.

A black or Hispanic male should not automatically be judged to be breaking the law.

Basically, police personnel should act toward minorities the same as white people.

Get rid of the bad apples is critical Law enforcement is a tough career to pursue. It is not for just anyone who wants to put on the uniform and wear the badge.

It should be more about communications, discipline and building relationships than waving a revolver or night stick. Police personnel need to have patience and a high boiling point. They can’t take taunts personally or be quick to judge an individual. Unfortunately, members of the public can be mean, ugly and disrespectful.

Remember the 1960’s? I do. Nevertheless, some police departments have and will have bad apples. It has been true throughout history. The Minneapolis police officer who has been charged with killing George Floyd is a good example of a bad

apple. Let’s remember, there is a preponderance of dedicated, caring police officers serving our communities compared to the small number of bad apples in police departments.

We should judge our police departments accordingly.

Don’t paint them all with the same paint brush.

Coming together America can be better than it is today. However, it will take hard work to come together and establish respect, trust and understanding.

Plus, it will take time and patience must be exercised by all of us.

Better times can be ahead if we make it a priority to focus on putting racial discrimination aside. This isn’t just about law enforcement and minorities. It’s about all of us.

Choosing community as we come out of quarantine

’m aware at how fragile our world really is right now. Today, our health, businesses, and economy feel so vulnerable.

Speculation abounds about what our “new normal” will look like.

From virtual workspaces, touch-less processes for services like loan closings and insurance claims, to social distancing and fewer handshakes — it may all be here to stay.

Is there a way we can choose to affect what our new normal will be?

Isolation and its negative impact on individuals have surfaced following our quarantine orders. I find it strange we are talking about this now, as the only difference in my neighborhood today versus before the COVID-19 quarantine and “shelter in place” is that people are now out walking their dogs and

babies. These are people I’m assuming are my neighbors, as we’ve never met them. I’ve lived in my neighborhood for 10-years without

knowing them.

I drive in and out of my neighborhood going about my life, and rarely see anyone outside doing anything, nobody conversing on front porches, few children playing ball or riding bikes in the street.

Privacy To change gears, my back yard is small and cozy, a place of refuge for months out of the year. A six-foot privacy fence provides just that — privacy from my nearest neighbor.

It’s the norm these days, but as a

result I don’t know the person living 1,000 feet from my back door. It’s as if we all come home from the world outside our homes, close the blinds, lock the doors and intentionally isolate ourselves. Not only that, but my three daughters live in the Denver area yet we rarely see each other because it’s an hour’s drive in traffic to get across town.

So I’m isolated from those I care most about and those I live closest to. Could it be that COVID-19 just added an additional layer to the isolation we’ve already become accustomed to?

A choice Which brings me to the new normal I choose, beginning today.

I can do very little to impact COVID-19, the economy or our politi-

cal differences but I can begin to keep extra toilet paper on hand for my neighbor. I can bake the elderly woman next door a meal and take her trash receptacle to the curb.

I can share a cold drink on my front porch and maybe host a block BBQ. Maybe I’ll maintain a food pantry for a needy neighbor.

Maybe next time we have a world event like this, I’ll be quarantined in a neighborhood surrounded by friends instead of just strangers who live next door.

Wouldn’t that be a nice new normal?

I

’m a 65-year-old black man, and I have literally spent most of my life doing everything possible to avoid encounters with police.

My mother warned me when I was about 12 to beware of the police because even though I was a good boy, I could be killed with impunity.

I’d be just another dead black boy supposedly mixed up in guns, drugs or gangs.

I wish I wasn’t afraid of the police.

I have never had a cop live on my street. I’ve known only two law enforcement officers socially; one is a former FBI agent who I met a decade ago and is a great guy, and the other is a black cop who I played street basketball with in the 1980s.

The vast majority of police never fire a weapon, but the bad deeds rightly get more attention because of the suffering.

As a journalist I did some of those stories. I wrote about suburban police officers using sap gloves to beat suspects. I wrote about a white cop who shot and killed an unarmed black man, who was on his way home from a party. The police officer had numerous complaints against him and was known in the department as the “Orkin Man,” after a commercial for a pest-control company.

I’ve made it this far by being extremely careful. I’ve never hung out in bars, don’t lose my temper with authority figures, and haven’t had a fight since high school, all in an effort to avoid any dealings with the police.

Yet, I know the fear. I have been stopped at least 20 times by the police, fortunately without escalation.

Once I was stopped on an early Sunday morning as my family hurried to church. I was admittedly speeding. But you could feel the air being sucked in by my family as

I pulled over and waited for the officer to approach.

I rolled down the window, careful to put both hands in plain view on the steering wheel.

The officer asked me if I knew why he stopped me. I quickly offered that Gregory L. Moore I was late for church and was probably over the speed limit.

He said yes sir, that was correct, took my license and registration and walked to his cruiser. When he came back, he said he was giving me a warning. Shocked, I said thank you.

He leaned into my car and replied: “Despite what you think, my job is not to make your day worse.”

There have been other encounters like that. But there have been dark moments.

Returning from a concert with four black male college classmates in the 1970s, we were pulled over and ordered out of our car in the snow, some of us without our shoes or coats on, because we allegedly “fit the description” of robbery suspects.

After standing in the cold for a half hour, we were let go after we checked out with no warrants.

Then, there was the time in the early 1990s when I was traveling with my family from Boston to Vermont to start vacation. We were driving along a deserted New Hampshire road around midnight when we passed a cop sitting at a closed gas station.

My wife and son were slumped down in the car asleep, but I immediately knew it was trouble when the cop car slowly rolled out behind me.

Thornton Arts welcomes the summer

Residents are finding creative ways to date during the pandemic

ownsend Wenzler of Arvada is just getting used to his new home.

Wenzler, 23, moved out to Colorado from Arkansas last August, and he came only knowing some family members and friends who live in the state.

And as COVID-19 closed social places where Wenzler would go to look to find people to date, he and other residents throughout the Denver metro area turned to dating apps like Hinge, Bumble and Tinder to meet other people.

“I don’t think it’s anything crazy, it’s just how it is, and young people are young and dumb and going insane and just wanting to branch out and meet each other. It’s impossible without the bars, so thank God for dating apps,” said Wenzler.

Since mid-March, mobile dating apps like Tinder and Bumble, where users swipe through a feed of profiles to see who is interested in them, have seen an uptick in use.

BBC reported that on March 29, Tinder users made 3 billion swipes worldwide — a record for the app.

Other apps like Bumble reported that it saw a 16% increase in messages sent during the week ending on May 1 as opposed to the week ending on March 13. Bumble also has a voice call and video chat feature and reported that it saw a near 70% increase in video calls during the week ending on May 1 in comparison to the week ending on March 13.

Wenzler had a date over to his home that he met on Tinder to cook her dinner during the pandemic. He said he thinks people are bored, and because of that, he believes residents his age aren’t afraid to forgo social distancing recommendations.

“Half of you wants to social distance, while the other part of you is going insane. I had more success (dating) toward the end of (the stay-at-home order) just because initially, people were more freaked out and less willing to go on dates with people they didn’t know,” said Wenzler.

A different way of meeting people Meredith Gerdes of Denver also uses Bumble to meet other people for dating. She believes residents who are looking to date are realizing how dependent they are on bars and restaurants to meet someone.

he Thornton Arts and Culture Division is emerging from the COVID-19 closedown with several free activities that provide artistic connection and take into account the need to keep attendees safe.

“We’ve been looking for ways to deliver creative experiences to our communities,” said Alisa Zimmerman, arts and culture manager with the City of Thornton. “It’s going to be COMING in progress ATTRACTIONS a—work something we’ll tweak as we go through summer.

We want the arts to be a way people can engage in a positive way.”

The first activity, Lumonics Mind Spa: Thornton, Thornton runs through Clarke Reader Sept. 25 in the OZ Gallery at the Thornton Arts and Culture Center, 9209 Dorothy Blvd.

The Denver-based Lumonics Light & Sound Gallery worked to create the installation which, according to provided information, uses “the light sculptures of artists Dorothy Tanner and Mel Tanner, and the video art and music of Marc Ballard and Dorothy Tanner, to create a soothing space for reflection and contemplation.”

As Zimmerman explained, there can be no more than 10 people in the gallery at a time, but while there they can meditate or bring their own art supplies to create in the multi-sensory installation.

“It’s a bit like the Calm app. We want people to come, get out of their homes, mellow out in this space and see how art can be different than a framed picture,” she said. “It’s really a different experience, and people might get something different from it each time. We hope people leave and feel a little renewed, refreshed and not so stressed.”

Thornton Arts is also offering two musical options — the annual Twist & Shout Summer Concerts and Ward ice cream socials and the new Acoustic Tuesdays Concert Series.

Attendees will have to follow numerous safety guidelines, and maximum attendance is 250 people per concert, but they will also be live-streamed.

The Twist & Shout concerts run from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Thursdays from July 9 through Aug. 27 at Carpenter Park Field, 11151 Colorado Blvd.

Bands will perform in a variety of genres, ranging from patriotic classics to Motown, the 80s and bluegrass.

Free ice cream will be served at Ward concerts in August.

Clarke’s Concert of the Week - James Brown Live in Boston Legendary soul-man James Brown was scheduled to perform at the Boston Garden on the day following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968, but the city’s mayor wanted to cancel the performance out of fears that it would lead to violence. With the help of African American councilmember Tom Atkins, Brown and the city reached a deal to broadcast the performance on television, in the hopes that people would stay in to watch.

The idea mostly worked and watching the concert now, it’s easy to see why. Brown is incandescent, bringing all his talent, charisma and humanity to bear for a moment when he was needed most. Forming a new relationship during the pandemic Just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Sam Whitley met his now girlfriend Chelsea Benavides through a friend.

The two went out together to a restaurant, hit it off and decided they wanted to go out together again.

But COVID-19 forced restaurants to close, so Whitley and Benavides ordered take-out food and ate together at a park.

“After our second date, we decided to do social distance dating because we wanted to be cautious with what’s going and be safe. For a good while, we didn’t see each other at all,” said Whitley.

Wanting to still keep the connection with Benavides, Whitley dropped off a care package to her that included ice cream and dinner.

After that, the two spent time video chatting and did online tours of places like Machu Picchu — while still keeping a distance from each other.

Whitley said his big idea was to set up a projector in his driveway with a screen. Benavides sat in her car on Whitley’s driveway, and he sat outside of it and kept a distance as the two watched a movie together.

“I think my mentality was trying to figure out what I would do on a typical date and how I can modify it so that we can still do a date like a typical one in a way to still social distance,” he said.

Whitley said dating during the pandemic has been a crazy time, but it has forced him to think outside the box in terms of setting up dates with Benavides. He added that it has been worth it, because he has had a great time with her.

“I feel like it allowed us to connect, and it caused us to have deeper conversations. It was a time to spend at a park or watch the sunset and catch up on each other’s days and to get to know each other and what our lives are like,” said Whitley. “It was really nice to be able to connect, and because there was so much other stuff going on, we really got to know each other. I really appreciate that.”

Section 1. Legislative Findings. The City Council hereby finds and determines that it is in the best interests of the health, safety and welfare of the residents of the City of Northglenn to authorize the administrative approval of applications for the temporary modification of liquor licensed premises.

Specifically, the City Council finds and determines that because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the resulting statewide and local response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City Council desires to allow restaurants that have a liquor license, and seek to modify their liquor licensed premises to comply with statewide orders authorizing their reopening, to do so as expeditiously as possible.

Therefore, the City Council finds and determines that allowing the administrative approval of applications for the modification of liquor licensed premises will be in the best interests of the public health, safety and welfare.

The City Council further finds and determines that because of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the provisions of this Ordinance should take effect immediately, to allow the immediate administrative processing of any such applications for the modification of liquor licensed premises.

Section 2. Section 18-2-4 of the Northglenn Municipal Code is amended, by the addition thereto of a new subsection (c) to read as follows: Section 18-2-4. Administrative Approval of Certain Applications. ***

(c) The City Clerk is authorized in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 47-302 and the provisions of the Colorado Liquor Code to administratively approve an application for a modification or a temporary modification of liquor licensed premises. Nothing in this subsection (c) shall prevent the City Clerk from scheduling action on the application before the Licensing Authority if the City Clerk determines an administrative approval of such an application is not warranted based on the circumstances of the particular application.

the blue lights and siren came on.

My wife jumped up in her seat and asked what was going on. I told her I didn’t know.

I was driving the speed limit, so that couldn’t be it. The officer tapped on the window and brusquely asked for my license and registration.

I calmly asked him what was the problem, but he silently stalked off as my 8-year-old son came to life in the backseat.

As my blood began to boil, my wife and kid pleaded with me to stay calm. No other cars were on the road. After about 10 minutes, the officer came back and handed me my documents. My hands in plain view, I asked why he had stopped me. “You were driving too close to my vehicle,” he snapped.

I sat there for a moment fuming, letting him take off before me. I told my wife that he stopped me simply because he saw a black man and suspected I was a criminal only to be surprised to find a family.

Then, there was the time the cops showed up at my house in Golden.

My wife was in the car with our two daughters, and when she buzzed herself into our gated street she noticed a police car pull in behind her.

She assumed they were heading to a neighbor’s house, but they pulled

into our driveway and asked for her brother, who was living with us at the time. He is the nicest guy and has never been in trouble.

But apparently he had gotten into a verbal altercation with a white guy after he rolled through a roundabout and cut him off as they both turned into a gas station. The enraged white guy berated him, and my brother-in-law gave it back to him. As they both pumped their gas, the guy threatened to call the cops.

My brother-in-law said go ahead, got into his car and headed home.

It’s mind boggling that two cops showed up at our house simply based on the word of a white guy over a minor traffic dispute. No witnesses, no physical altercation, no evidence of a crime.

After my wife in a tense exchange demanded the officers get off of our property as she held her brother in the garage, they finally left. Incredibly, he was issued a court summons, which was withdrawn after I called the police chief to object. It is the only time I have ever mentioned my position as editor during a personal complaint.

We were outraged and have no doubt that my brother-in-law would have been face down in our driveway or worse had he stepped outside of that garage. And for what?

Watching the life ebb from George Floyd on TV brought these memories flooding back. I literally said that could have been me under that

officer’s knee. And very few of my white friends can honestly say they had that feeling.

That speaks volumes. Over the years, I have had many discussions with white colleagues and friends about the police, and it’s clear that we live in different worlds.

They have run from police, driven off from traffic stops, and flung clipboards handed to them across highways without any repercussions. I can’t imagine a black person getting away with that.

Maybe that’s because for many whites they know cops as fathers, brothers, cousins, friends and neighbors.

We, however, know them as a swaggering, disrespectful, and threatening presence.

The history of the police and black people dates back to the slave catchers and overseers. A lot of police officers in our country come to the job generationally with stereotypes and disdain toward black people that has been handed down from the old days.

Whether they want to admit it or not, it is part of the DNA of the profession, and it really doesn’t matter what color the person is who wears the uniform. Those attitudes are ingrained in the culture.

you have to send police officers who murder innocent civilians to prison, plain and simple.

Police officers who abuse their power have to be held accountable, just like in any other profession.

A clerk miscounts the money, they get fired. A journalist makes big mistakes, they get dismissed. You’re sitting in the car when a companion robs a store, you go down, too.

The argument that we ask police to risk their lives and make split decisions is no excuse for them being wrong when making life-anddeath decisions. They should have a higher standard to be right when using lethal force, not a lower one.

Reforming policing in America will require changing their culture, reinventing their training and unerring accountability.

I’m exhausted watching black men die at the hands of police. I hate seeing the fear in my daughters’ eyes from knowing I could die, begging for air, under the knee of a police officer.

I don’t hate cops. I fear them. But I’m about to turn 66 years old, and I’d like to exhale for a change.
