Jerry Healey

T

hank you for reading the Wheat Ridge Transcript. Beginning next week, we will be changing and improving the newspaper. At the same time we are changing its name to the Jeffco Transcript. While you can still expect news and information about Wheat Ridge, Jefferson County and the Jeffco Public School District, we are also going to share interesting stories from throughout the county, region and state. Each week, our team of dedicated journalists, advertising sales people, page and ad designers, pressworkers and support staff will produce one of the best examples of a community newspaper/website in Colorado. We attend local government and school board meetings so that you can read an unbiased account of what transpired. We

inform you about local happenings, interesting people and new business openings. In fact, on any given week, a single edition can contain hundreds of names of local people. We bring in important deep-dive stories from our own journalists, plus some content from our partners at The Colorado Sun, Colorado Politics and Rocky Mountain Public Media. In short, we connect you to your community, county and state government. Thank you for being a reader and I hope you enjoy the new Jeffco Transcript. Please feel free to reach out to me with your feedback and story ideas. Jerry Healey is the owner and publisher of Colorado Community Media. He can be reached at jhealey@coloradocommunitymedia.com.

Mines planning on in-person classes in the fall Masks and remote learning options to be the new norm BY PAUL ALBANI-BURGIO PALBANIBURGIO@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Classes will be held at Colorado School of Mines campus in the fall — but life on campus will still look plenty different. In a message sent to students and faculty on June 22, School of Mines President Paul C. Johnson and four other administrators outlined plans for the fall semester, which will kick off on Aug. 24 with the school sticking with its planned semester calendar. Little else, however, will be unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the way many classes will be delivered. The administrators said Mines will be working with a reduced number of classrooms and SEE MINES, P6

JCPH says it will take legal action against Bandimere for July 4 show Evidence speedway violated safety agreement reached before event BY PAUL ALBANI-BURGIO PALBANIBURGIO@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Jefferson County Public Health is promising to pursue legal action against Bandimere Speedway’s owner after the speedway held a racing event on July 4 that violated a court order that laid out crowd size and social distancing requirements for the event. According to a statement posted on the JCPH website, JCPH and Bandimere agreed to “clear, court ordered requirements” leading up to the Jet Car Nationals event “with the intention of permitting a well-controlled event to proceed.” “While Bandimere said they would comply prior to the event, those requirements were violated,” the statement reads. According to the statement, that agreement included requirements for six feet of social distancing between households to be maintained and that gatherings within the venue be limited to “175 people per activity area” However, the release clarified that requirement did not limit the entire venue to 175 people. Instead, Bandimere was supposed to use the social distance calculator to determine how many individuals, up to a maximum of 175 people, could safely social distance in various areas, such as individual grandstands.
