Mines planning on in-person classes in the fall Masks and remote learning options to be the new norm

Classes will be held at Colorado School of Mines campus in the fall — but life on campus will still look plenty different.

In a message sent to students and faculty on June 22, School of Mines President Paul C. Johnson and four other administrators outlined plans for the fall semester, which will kick off on Aug. 24 with the school sticking with its planned semester calendar.

Little else, however, will be unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the way many classes will be delivered. The administrators said Mines will be working with a reduced number of classrooms and SEE MINES, P6

JCPH says it will take legal action against Bandimere for July 4 show Evidence speedway violated safety agreement reached before event

Jefferson County Public Health is promising to pursue legal action against Bandimere Speedway’s owner after the speedway held a racing event on July 4 that violated a court order that laid out crowd size and social distancing requirements for the event.

According to a statement posted on the JCPH website, JCPH and Bandimere agreed to “clear, court ordered requirements” leading up to the Jet Car Nationals event “with the intention of permitting a well-controlled event to proceed.”

“While Bandimere said they would comply prior to the event, those requirements were violated,” the statement reads.

According to the statement, that agreement included requirements for six feet of social distancing between households to be maintained and that gatherings within the venue be limited to “175 people per activity area” However, the release clarified that requirement did not limit the entire venue to 175 people.

Instead, Bandimere was supposed to use the social distance calculator to determine how many individuals, up to a maximum of 175 people, could safely social distance in various areas, such as individual grandstands.

New online dashboard offers look at how pandemic is impacting Jeffco County seeing small uptick in cases after weeks of decline

VARIANCE REQUEST On June 18, Jefferson County submitted a second variance request to the state, seeking certain exemptions from state COVID policies, after its first request was approved.

The new request sought permission to increase the gathering size limit to as much as 175 people inside and 250 people outside, as well as the go-ahead for movie theaters, libraries and other still-closed facilities to reopen.

According to Jefferson County Public Affairs Director Julie Story, the county was told on June 19 the request was being put on hold until certain questions were answered as the state prepared to move into a new stage of the public health order.

The county answered those questions and, at press time, was waiting to hear back from CDPHE within the next week or two.

As the COVID-19 crisis continues, Jeffco residents can now get a clearer and more precise picture of how and where the pandemic is impacting the county by accessing a redesigned online dashboard.

The new dashboard, which debuted late last month, can be accessed at tinyurl. com/jeffco-covid. It includes several charts and data points that had not been previously available to the public, such as maps that break down the number and rate of cases in neighborhood units that are much smaller than the city breakdown that was previously available.

This newer, more detailed data can be particularly illuminating when trying to understand the virus’ impact on a city like Golden. That’s because the county’s old dataset listed Golden as having over 200 confirmed cases of COVID-19, while the new site listed 114 as of July 2.

Why the change? It’s because the old site only listed cases by city, and any cases in unincorporated areas closest to Golden were also included in the city’s total.

The new site, however, not only does away with that problem but allows residents to compare smaller sections of the city such as the eastern part of the city (labeled East Old Golden Road) and Lakota Hills.

To help the community understand and utilize the new dashboard, Jefferson County Public Health Epidemiologist Kate Watkins recently gave a presentation on how to use and understand the data. Here were five takeaways: • After a continuous decline since mid-May, Jeffco was starting to see a slow

One of the main tools the county is using to measure the trend in cases are three- and seven-day moving averages, which measure the average number of new cases for the last seven days and allows epidemiologists to understand general trends that are less impacted by single day variations in reporting.

Watkins said both of those averages have been slowly but continuously declining since mid-May but are starting to show a slight uptick.

“Over the last week we’ve actually started to see a little bit of an increase in the number of cases, which was not unexpected with the movement from Stay-at-Home to Safer-at-Home and then from

Safer-at-Home to the expanded openness we’ve seen with Safer-at-Home and in the vast great outdoors,” said Watkins. “We expected to see an increase in cases and we are starting to see that.”

• Deaths in Jeffco have continued to decrease week over week since mid-May. Reported deaths peaked the week of April 19 with 27 and reached their second highest total the week of May 17 with 25. Since then, the number of deaths has declined each week and reached their lowest total yet the week of June 21 with 3 deaths.

The overall trend has been a decrease in new hospitalizations since they peaked at 71 the week of June 12. The county saw its lowest level of

new hospitalizations during the week of June 28 when just two new patients were hospitalized in Jeffco. However, Watkins said she is expecting the county may see more hospitalizations as the summer and fall progress.

• Jeffco isn’t doing as many tests as it wants to be, but county’s positive rate remains low.

When it comes to testing, there are two important numbers Watkins said she is keeping her eye on. The first is the number of tests being administered in the county per day, which she said is important not only to identify individual cases but to make sure the county is getting an accurate overall picture of how many cases there are in the community.

The number of tests being conducted has generally increased since the start of the pandemic and around 500-600 PCR tests (one of two types of tests the county is counting) are now typically conducted each day. However, Watkins said the county continues to

fall short of the 800 tests per day Harvard Global Health recommends for a county of Jeffco’s size.

The good news is the percentage of county tests that are positive has consistently fallen below 5% in recent weeks, which is the county’s goal.

• Hispanics and the elderly are disproportionately affected.

The new dashboard also contains several graphs that compare that breakdown cases and deaths among certain demographics, including age, sex and race.

Those graphs show that Jeffco’s Hispanic and elderly populations have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19: Hispanics make up 15.5% of Jeffco’s population yet account for 25.6% of cases while those over 80 account for 3.7% of the population but 11% of deaths.

People living in an institution, such as a nursing or care home, account for 18.4% of county cases but 72% of county deaths.

• Lower income neighborhoods harder hit.

The new dashboard includes maps and charts that break down cases by both city (or census designated place) and neighborhoods (a combination of census tracts intended to provide a look at cases on a scale that is smaller than cities but not small enough to compromise patient confidentiality.

According to that data, the city of Wheat Ridge has the highest rate of cases in the county at 9.09 per 1,000 persons (as of July 2) while tiny Aspen Park has the lowest at just 1 per 1,000 people.

Neighborhoods with the highest rate of cases include Skiline in Arvada (14,64 per 1,000 persons), Charles Whitlock Recreation Park and Morse Park in Lakewood (which are listed as one neighborhood and have a case rate of 13.02 per 1,000).

Watkins said those are two of the county’s lower income neighborhoods.

King cruises to victory in Democratic 1st Judicial District DA race

Jefferson County’s next district attorney will be someone who has already worked inside that office.

In the party primary election that ended June 30, Alexis King, who spent 10 years working as a deputy DA in the 1st Judicial District Attorney’s Office, handily defeated Jake Lilly, a sex assault prosecutor in the 5th Judicial District, to become the Democratic nominee to succeed Republican Pete Weir.

In results as of 8 a.m. MT July 1, King had 67.6 percent of the vote

to Lilly’s 32.43 percent.

King will face unopposed Republican Matthew Durkin, a chief DA in the 1st Judicial District Attorney’s Office, in the November general election.

The 1st Judicial District included Jefferson and Gilpin King counties.

“Thank you everyone for the kind words of support today and throughout this long campaign,” King wrote in a message on her campaign Facebook page late June 30.

On her campaign website, King described herself as an experienced leader who has faced the difficult decisions that will confront a DA and will prioritize violent crime. She emphasized her desire to advocate for reform and promote alternatives to incarceration for non-violent offenders while also touting her experience working on behalf of victims of sex crimes.

King is currently a Title IX attorney at the Rocky Mountain Victim Law Center, a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services to crime victims. She previously spent a year and a half as a magistrate in Denver County

Courts.

In a Colorado Community Media candidate questionnaire completed by King last month, she said the single issue and key mission of her office will be transparency and accountability. King also said she would “work to acknowledge the harm communities of color and other vulnerable populations have experienced through systemic failures to respect citizens’ rights” as DA. Matt Durkin has written on his website that he will attempt to achieve a reduction in violent crime while promoting accountability in responding to addiction.

The chart at right shows the record surge in contracts and sales. Contracts, which surged in May, surged further in June, along with a large jump in closings — as you’d expect from so many homes going under contract during May. The long table at right, which is also limited to Jeffco, shows how the first six months of the past five years compare with each other in several key metrics, demonstrating among other things that the median days on the MLS has dropped as it has in previous years from January through June, and that the average price per finished square foot has continued to rise year over year — perhaps more than usual this year.

At Golden Real Estate, we have detected increased interest in relocating to Colorado from both coasts. The pandemic put apartment dwellers, in particular, in more fear of catching the virus, especially those dependent on elevators. Of course, we have apartment buildings in Denver, too, and we’re seeing people from there as well wanting to be “on the ground,” able to get outside without coming in close contact with other people.

Not content with simply buying a detached singlefamily home, some buyers are looking to buy homes on acreage. Some are moving to the western slope.

All the after-effects of the pandemic are yet to be fully understood, so it should be an interesting rest of 2020. For example, increased working at home could spur an increased migration from city to countryside.

One thing is clear for now — that the real estate market is going to stay active and that it will be a seller’s market, although we have observed that overpriced homes are sitting on the market more than ever.

When a home doesn’t sell within the first week, it’s important to lower the price right away instead of letting the listing languish at its original listing price.

A booming July 4 was a bust for firefighters Do-it-yourself fireworks displays — many illegal — kept crews busy STAFF REPORT

The Independence Day fireworks celebrations around metro Denver were loud and boisterous -- many of them illegal -- and they kept local firefighters occupied through the night.

After months of being cooped up by COVID-19 restrictions, and with major public fireworks displays canceled, people across the region let loose with a barrage of do-it-yourself July 4 rockets and noisemakers.

“This is what we feared, warned the community about and up-staffed 5 extra fire engines for,” South Metro Fire Rescue tweeted late July 4. “Multiple fires are occurring across the South Metro area right now.”

The morning of July 5, the agency released this tally of calls it had received since early the day before: • 8 brush fires • 6 outside fires • 5 illegal burns • 4 outside smoke investigations • 4 dumpster fires • 1 garage fire • 1 house fire “We’ve had eight fires caused by fireworks tonight,” Lakewood-based West Metro Fire Rescue chimed in late July 4. “ ... West Metro geared up for the 4th of July, putting more resources on duty, in case something like this would happen.

Please celebrate safely.”

West Metro later told KUSA-9News

that about a dozen fires in its territory were linked to fireworks, including fires in grass, dumpsters and on a fence.

“We understand the frustration many of our community members are experiencing tonight due to use of illegal fireworks,” Aurora Fire Rescue tweeted July 4.

The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office on July 4 pleaded with area residents on Twitter to “not call our dispatch center to report hearing fireworks. The call center is getting overrun with these calls.” It said people could call 911 to report actual fires.

by Denver TV stations showed constant bursts of fireworks across the city that night.

In most areas of metro Denver, home fireworks displays were illegal July 4, either under existing permanent local ordinances in places like Centennial, Lakewood and Littleton or under temporary countywide fire restrictions.

Unincorporated Arapahoe, Douglas and Jefferson County were all under a Stage 1 fire ban prohibiting fireworks use.

On July 2, three Douglas County fireworks shows planned for the Fourth of July were canceled due to fire danger.

Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock, who also serves as the county fire marshal, declared that the county was under fire restrictions. This action barred the shows, slated to take place in Highlands Ranch, the Pinery and Castle Rock.

Almost every other major public fireworks display usually held across metro Denver had already been called off, largely because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This did not occur,” JCPH Public Affairs Manager Ashley Sever said.

Sever said the county does not have an estimate of the total attendance at the event although they did collect evidence that social distancing requirements were violated.

In the statement, JCPH Executive Director Mark Johnson said he wants Jeffco’s businesses, which he called “pillars of the community,” to safely operate but that interest must be balanced with those of keeping the community safe as case numbers are starting to increase again in Jeffco.

“We are proud that the large majority of our local businesses are working diligently to keep themselves and others safe,” Johnson said in the release. “However, when one business does not, it compromises the health and economy of our entire community.”

JCPH first expressed concern about the July 4 event on June 29, when JCPH Director Johnson sent a letter to the speedway’s owner, John Bandimere, alleging that the number of tickets available for upcoming events, including the Jet Car Nationals, suggested that the speedway was planning to violate crowd size and social distancing requirements at those events. The letter also noted that some types of tickets came with the promise of access to a buffet, which would also violate current public-health-0rder requirements that ban buffets.

The letter concluded by stating

that Bandimere Speedway should submit a letter to JCPH detailing the protocols Bandimere had put in place to ensure the July 4 event operated in compliance with public health requirements by 5 p.m. on July 1. Ashley Sever, the Public Affairs Manager for JCPH, said on July 2 JCPH had not yet received such a letter.

However, JCPH and Bandimere’s owners then reached an agreement with Bandimere posting on its Facebook page on July 3 that the event would be happening as scheduled with Jeffco Health Department officials monitoring social distancing guidelines. The post also noted that every other row in the grandstands would be marked unavailable for seating and encouraged attendees to practice social distancing.

Colorado Community Media reached out to Bandimere Speedway on July 2 and again on July 6 about the situation but has not received a response.

A July 5 post on the Bandimere Facebook account stated “The Bandimere staff and family want to thank everyone for their support of the Brakes Plus Jet Nationals `Freedom Rally.’ We can’t even begin to describe how much we appreciate the racers, fans, sponsors, and staff members for standing by our side. Thank you for spending your Independence Day with us celebrating freedom the best way we know how.”

The Bandimere website is continuing to sell general admission tickets for the July 26 Truck Invasion event. However, it no longer appears to be selling tickets for other events, including the Bug In scheduled for July 12.

lower occupancy limits that have left the school expecting approximately 60 to 70 percent of classes to occur on campus in lecture halls or lab settings with social distancing requirements in place. The remainder of Mines courses will be offered in remote, hybrid or online formats.

Hands-on, project-based and firstyear classes and labs are being prioritized for in-person delivery, while the “needs of faculty” are also being considered. All classrooms are also being outfitted with equipment that will allow all classes to be recorded which Johnson said will allow for “flexibility and eliminate the pressure to attend in-person if you do not feel well or need to isolate or self-quarantine.”

Students wishing to delay their return to campus will also be provided with remote or online course options, according to the statement.

Other hallmarks of campus life will also continue in the fall, but often in a significantly revised form. In May, Mines suspended its on-campus living requirement for first-year students decided to limit occupancy of residence halls to 80% to allow for safe social distancing to be maintained and reserve a substantial number of rooms for possible use for self-quarantine and isolation. Amenities like the dining halls and student recreation center will also be opened but with capacity restrictions and other safety protocols in place.

The school is also instituting several health and safety rules, including a requirement cloth masks be worn indoors and “in any setting where it is difficult to maintain social distancing.”

The release also asks students and

faculty to commit to the Oredigger Promise — a commitment to adopt the practices and attitudes necessary to safely return to and remain together at Mines.

“When we return to campus, we must all pledge to keep ourselves and one another safe,” the administrator’s statement read. “Most students may be in the low-risk group with respect

to COVID-19 impacts, but others in our community are not. We also have to think of our faculty and staff and their immediate families. Even if you have little worry for yourself, please think of them.”

Tucker Orr, who will be a sophomore at Mines this year, said he is glad the school will be holding some classes in-person given the in-person interaction and hands-on experience that is integral to many classes. But at the same time, he is also glad he and the rest of Mines student community will be able to watch classes online.

“I’m not too worried about going back,” said Orr. “I think we have a pretty good community at Mines and are going to try to help each other out and not get this thing spread all over the place.”

But Justin Pace, who will be starting a graduate degree in Mines this fall after completing his undergraduate there in the spring, said his reaction was decidedly more mixed.

“I feel like a lot schools are being pressured into making decisions right now and Mines is one of them,” Pace said.

Pace said he is concerned outbreaks in the dorms could still be an issue whether the dorms are at 80% or 100% capacity, and also worries campus could still end up being too crowded.

“One of the issues is if people have online classes that take place 10 minutes after an in-person class then 10 minutes isn’t enough time to go home so the same amount of people are going to be on campus,” he said. “So, I feel like most people are going to be on campus and its going to be kind of rough to deal with all the restrictions.

I think a lot of people are stressed out about how education is going to be for the next year.”

COVID-19 complicates Jefferson County budget situation Staff discussion includes $6.3 million in anticipated cuts

As Jefferson County begins its 2021 budgeting process, administrative staff is entering the process by warning county departments to cut a total of about $6.3 million from budgets to help maintain the county’s financial footing as the COVID-19 crisis continues.

During a June 29 budget strategy discussion, Jeffco budget manager Dan Conway estimated that county expenditures would be about $237.6 million in 2021, if the county maintained current expenditures, but did not provide any salary raises.

That would leave the county with a general fund balance of about $21.7 million at the end of 2021, less than the $28 million balance recommended by the Governor’s Finance Officers Association to cover two months of operating expenses as that organization recommends.

However, Conway said the county has already finalized around $3.3 million in savings from 2020, including $2.2 million that will be saved

That would leave the county needing $3 million in cuts in order to reach that $28 million year-end balance figure.

However, Conway said approving a budget that does not include any raises for county employees would create other challenges for the county.

County Manager Don Davis said one option would be for the county to budget for a onetime payment of $500 0r $1,000 to all employees, which the county would not actually pay

out until later in 2021. Doing so would provide the county with the flexibility to not go through with those payments if additional costs related to the pandemic put additional strain on the county budget.

All three commissioners voiced some support for that approach, although Commissioner Casey Tighe expressed some concern about how providing those raises might be viewed by the greater community.

“There are a lot of folks who are not seeing an increase in their wages and they’ve got to make their property tax payments,” said Tighe. “So that’s why I think we need to really watch what we’re doing and who we’re impacting so I think buying a little time and letting our employees know we appreciate the work they’re doing but we don’t know if we can come forward (with a payment) makes sense.”

Conway said county staff is drafting a budget proposal that includes a $1,000 onetime payment for employees (costing the county about $1.3 million) but $6.3 million in department cuts, equalling a projected fund balance of $29.8 million. County staff will present the commissioners with the preliminary budget later this summer. The budget is to be finalized in October.

Teachers face a ‘curveball’ with online summer learning Students gaining skills despite new challenges

Jeffco Public Schools typically runs its Jeffco Summer of Early Leaning (JSEL), a summer learning program for incoming first through third graders, at schools and in person. But as June rolled around and health concerns around the COVID-19 pandemic continued, the program’s organizers reworked JSEL into a virtual offering to serve 515 students this year.

“JSEL has been such a passion for me and remote learning has thrown a curveball, but it’s really exciting these kids are still able to do this program,” said JSEL teacher Brie Montoya. “I really am glad these kids were able to do it.”

The no-cost programming is open to students who would like summer help to ensure they are on-track for next school year, particularly for students who are not reading at grade level and are on a read plan, or who are in danger of needing a read plan.

The program began with one-to-one meetings between parents and teachers on June 1, followed by five weeks

of video conferencing classes.

While the program traditionally runs from 8 a.m. to noon on weekdays, this year, classes were held on weekdays from 9:30 to 11:30. The two-hour daily sessions included reading lessons taught to students and chances for students to practice their reading out loud. Outside of class hours, students also had the option to complete self-guided math activities.

As teachers adapted to the remote environment alongside their students, they said they found creative ways to keep class engaging — whether that meant virtual field trips to the San Diego Zoo and the Met in New York, or sending care packages to students during the summer.

The teachers added that for some students, helping them adapt required reworking the remote environment altogether.

Jeffco parent Becca Rehme, whose son, Quinn, attends Arvada’s Sierra Elementary, enrolled her son in JSEL after noting he had lost some learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Within two or three days of the online version of JSEL, however, she could tell her son was overwhelmed.

Rehme and Kristina McCombie, Quinn’s JSEL teacher, came up with an alternative: Rehme would attend

classes instead of Quinn during the day and teach her son separately. Her son would also have a one-on-one remote meeting with McCombie every day before class began.

“They were very flexible and willing to meet him where he was at,” Rehme said. “The benefits of the remote environment were that we could customize the experience to Quinn’s needs and maturity level.”

Parent Christie Hensley likewise highlighted the way her daughter’s JSEL teacher, Montoya, has worked with her daughter, Jane, who attends Blue Heron Elementary in Littleton.

“One day, my daughter really was struggling. The teacher could see it on Zoom and picked up the phone and called me personally,” Hensley said.

“It was great. My daughter has made a lot of gains thanks to JSEL and her teacher has really helped her gain more confidence (reading).”

While teachers have learned how to get students the individual help they need remotely, Montoya acknowledged that the extent of learning this year may not match what occurred in JSEL for 2019.

“There’s something to be said for having a book in front of you and going through it,” she said. “But this is our reality. I think it’s not hurting them; they’re getting the extra reading

For the seventh time since May, there was a protest in Lakewood against systemic racism and police brutality. But instead of George Floyd being the name in use at a June 30 protest, a different name was the subject of discussion — Elijah McClain.

At least 25 residents gathered on June 30 near Wadsworth Boulevard and Alameda Avenue to peacefully rally in honor of Eli-

jah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man who died after an encounter with Aurora Police last August. Residents held signs that had McClain’s name on them and messages in support of Black residents.

McClain died last August when Aurora Police were called to the area of Billings Street and Colfax Avenue on a report of a suspicious person. He was wearing a mask, and his family said he did so often because he felt cold due to his anemia, 9News reported.

McClain was in the area visiting a convenience store and did not commit a crime.

That said, students have made important strides through the program, teachers and parents said.

“He’s going to be in a better place than he would have had he not done JSEL,” Rehme said of her son. “I encourage other parents to enroll their children in JSEL in future summers. I watched both my son and the members of his class progress greatly in just one month.”

Beyond academics, McCombie and Montoya emphasized the other skills a remote JSEL has helped students develop this year.

“This was a brand new thing; they didn’t know me and they had to have a certain amount of confidence with getting to know the other kids,” McCombie said. “They’ve gained interpersonal skills, some confidence and some flexibility.”

Teachers also have gained a lot, she said — and with luck, those gains will help inform the remote portions of next year’s teaching.

“A lot of schools including my own did not do any live teaching during the pandemic. We’re paving the way for what remote teaching could look like in the fall,” she said. “This is live teaching every day. It’s been really rejuvenating to me and has made my life brighter.”

The reopening rollercoaster continues

I

have to tell you, this is one heck of a roller coaster ride we’re all on.

One minute things are opening up again, then the next they’re shutting down again, but it’s only certain AVENUE things that can FLASHES reopen and then a smaller group of things in that circle that are back out of business. Just when I get excited and hopeful about a situation, the rug gets partially pulled out from under me again and unfortunately, John Akal I’m not the only one that is totally confused and left in limbo once again.

After witnessing one of the most bizarre Fourth of July holidays in our history, quite frankly, I am anxiously awaiting this week’s developments. I played with a marching jazz band for a parade that wasn’t a parade and ended up being just a stroll around Vail Village with everyone trying their best to wear masks and keep their distance … sort of. Then I came home only to see news broadcasts showing way more people than were supposed to be

allowed at an outdoor event nearby and threats of repercussions from the County. That was followed by an aerial view of hundreds of illegal fireworks going off over the entire Denver metro area that caused dozens of fires, including one guy who set his own house on fire because he tried to dispose of hot burned out fireworks in a plastic bucket set right next to his garage, then went to bed.

On a brighter note, I found out that my new puppy dogs don’t seem to get upset when they hear fireworks going off in the neighborhood, unlike most of my other dogs. At least they didn’t tear down the fence and break into someone’s house and hide in his bath room like a St. Bernard I had years ago. That one resulted in his calling the police to report a lion in his bathtub. Yes, I have recounted that story more than once in these pages. In his defense, he had spent most of the day drinking a lot of beer in Lions Park.

That brings me to a dilemma right now. I don’t want to report on something fun and exciting that could end up cancelled, but I also don’t want to miss telling everyone about things they end up being able to attend. I’m a little apprehensive about what the next couple of weeks might bring with

lots of people coming into contact with each other over the weekend. One thing I do know. Buffalo Bill Days are canceled this year.

So, to be on the safe side, at least for another week, I’m going to focus on a smaller event that probably won’t end up on the chopping block.

The Golden History Museum will be starting their Homestead Open House days that will be happening every Saturday from now until Aug. 29. The first one is this Saturday, July 11. They all take place at the Golden History Park located at 11th and Arapahoe Streets.

You have probably seen this place, it’s like a little town of historic buildings next to Clear Creek that were relocated and are all a part of Golden’s history. Well, on special days that little village comes to life with volunteers recreating various aspects of pioneer life around here. They do things like wood stove cooking, demonstrations of cabin living in the 1800s, one room schoolhouse lessons and blacksmithing.

Now, normally they have the buildings open so you can go in and check them out and interact with the folks doing the demonstrations, but this year, due to Covid, you will have to take a peek through the open doors

and windows but they will be inside doing their demonstrations.

It’s free to attend and happening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s just a drop in situation, no reservations are necessary and you can stay as long as you want. For more information, go to www.goldenhistory.org.

They have a pretty cool virtual event coming up on July 23, from 6-7:30 p.m.

It’s a program called The Bad Old Days of Colorado: Untold Stories of the Wild West. This will be presented by Author and Golden Native Randi SamuelsonBrown and she will be telling everyone about some of the colorful characters and stories that accompany them on a journey through 19th Century Colorado. This place was not for the faint of heart back then, so tune in to find out why. This one is free for members and $10 for non-members. You will need to register through the link on their website … And don’t forget to howl at 8 p.m.

Lakewood to stand against racism.

She was inspired to organize rallies after George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was killed by Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin in May. Floyd died as Chauvin knelt on his neck, and Chauvin was charged with seconddegree murder.

Shariff Belken called McClain’s death tragic and said activists can’t let up in efforts calling for the end of systemic racism and police brutality. “(Billings Street and Colfax Avenue) is 30 miles from here,” said Shariff Belken, as she held a Black Lives Matter sign at the June 30 rally. “(McClain’s death) brings tears to my eyes.

It’s easy to think things like this just happen in Minneapolis — but it does happen here.”

Lakewood resident Joan Jacobson attended the June 30 rally and said it isn’t right that McClain died rather than being detained. “(McClain’s case) is the worst one.

Not only was he killed without a trial — he was killed without committing a crime,” said Jacobson. “No crime, no accusation, and gosh, we all act weird.”

On June 27, demonstrations in

Aurora in honor of McClain turned violent when Aurora Police launched smoke canisters and pepper spray at demonstrators. The online news site Denverite reported that Vanessa Wilson, interim chief of Aurora Police, said “agitators” at the demonstration threw rocks and bottles at police —

prompting officers to respond.

“We still don’t have justice for (McClain), and there never will be because he is gone. But we need to hold the officers who murdered him accountable,” said Sarah Nelson, a Lakewood resident who attended the June 30 rally.

McClain was dangerous, according to 9News.

McClain was thrown on the ground by officers, and an officer was heard shouting that McClain was reaching for the officer’s gun in body camera footage, though the footage does not clearly show if that is what was happening.

The officers used a now-banned carotid hold to keep McClain restrained, causing him to lose consciousness, and a first responder injected him with the tranquilizing drug ketamine.

McClain died three days later in a hospital.

The officers involved in his death faced no criminal charges of wrongoing after an investigation by the Adams County district attorney’s office. But Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser was recently appointed as special prosecutor to review McClain’s death.

Commemorating Eva Levine and what she stood for ALCHEMY

eople reporting other people to the authorities. Entire faiths, entire ethnicities demonized, attacked.

Ghettos. Mobs. Looting. Uniforms.

Gassing. Rampant disease.

These are the circumstances in which Eva Braun Levine found herself as the Nazi stranglehold tightened on Europe. Last week, July 6, was Eva Levine’s birthday … July 6, 1916, to be exact, and I am writing here again to commemorate this day.

Eva was the second daughter of five children born to Jewish parents in Lodz, Poland.

Her father was in real estate, and the family owned the building in which they lived. Eva finished high school and studied history at a local university.

I selected Eva’s Identification Card #2633, when I visited the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., at random from a bin of such ID cards for females — women and children — who were victims of the ghettos, deportations, concentration camps, and, for so many, the gas chambers and mass murders of the Holocaust.

In Poland, Eva married her boyfriend Herman in 1939. The previous year Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass), a pogrom against Jews carried out in Germany by Nazi paramilitary forces and civilians, had already taken place. Jewish homes, hospitals and schools were ransacked as attackers demolished buildings with sledgehammers.

Then Germany invaded Poland. The Ge-

stapo banged on Eva’s door and slapped her father-in-law around. Eva herself confronted the officers.

In 1941, Eva and Herman and Eva’s family — her mother, father, and three sisters — were deported to the ghetto of Piotrkow Trybunalski. In 1944 all the women were deported to Ravensbrück, a concentration camp in Germany and later to Bergen-Belsen.

Disease was rampant in the camps and Eva’s health deteriorated. Her mother Machla was so weakened by starvation and disease that she died two days before the British arrived at the camp in April 1945. Eva’s father Yakob had been deported to Buchenwald in SEE DORAY, P11

George Floyd spent the last 8:46 minutes of life suffocating while begging. Officer Chauvin’s conduct turned George Floyd’s arrest into a capital case with himself as prosecutor, judge, jury and executioner.

Enough! Nobody would ever abide these murders if the victims were unarmed belligerent white men with a few beers in them. The disturbing aspect is that Chauvin was the training officer for those rookie cops and apparently that day’s lesson was to gain submission at any cost. Yes, simply, George Floyd was killed by the four thugs from the Minneapolis Police Department.

So Mr. Floyd had drugs in his system. Mr. Haas’ theory of ‘excited delirium syndrome’ is just fake news.

He was not resisting arrest. He may well have passed a counterfeit bill.

As any of the long-time readers know, I am a geek. Or a nerd, depending on whatever definition of those two terms you ken. Which, it seems, is solely the purview of the HITTING dweebs.

HOME All of which describe me.

At any rate … as such, I am an afficionado of many things science fiction and fantasy. One of the first books I remember reading was “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.” From Michael Alcorn there, I progressed through many of the major series, whether more in the fantasy realm, like “Shannara,” or more pure science fiction, like “Dune.”

Of course, any journey like that would have to have a stop along the way in Middle Earth, the realm invented by J.R.R. Tolkien. Middle Earth is a land inhabited by men and elves, monsters and magic, dwarves and dragons, swords and sorcerers. The central character who runs through the entire narrative is a wizard, Gandalf, who has taken it upon himself to travel the length and breadth of Middle Earth to understand the conditions of the place. Beside him is The White Council (dramatic music!) made up of another wizard and two elf-lords.

Together, they monitor and manipulate events for the best good of all the free peoples of Middle Earth.

George R.R. Martin, and made into an epic series by HBO. The world of Game of Thrones, is, also, inhabited by men and elves, monsters and magic, dwarves and dragons, swords and sorceresses. It is the story of a power struggle involving two powerful families, and the last child of a third great family. Along the way, we meet an army of the dead, three dragons, and enough characters and houses that you need an easel so you can create a flow chart to track them all.

The essential conflict in Middle Earth is between the free people and the armies of a powerful evil sorcerer; the conflict in Game of Thrones is over the quest for lordship over all the land. Middle Earth’s bad guy and his minions are scary, bad and irredeemable; Game of Thrones’ bad guys are truly despicable, though often with a redeeming quality or two. The “good guys” in Middle Earth are noble and heroic, but also subject to very human weakness, jealousy, and folly; the “good guys” in Game of Thrones … don’t really exist. There are a few sympathetic characters, but the whole point is the amassing of power, and, as such, honor is a distant secondary consideration. who perished in or survived the horrors of the Holocaust, and to urge all of us to do whatever we can to confront hatred and injustice today.

What we don’t stand for is as important as what we do.

would say we live in a nation which professes Christian beliefs – do unto others as you would have them do unto you – and that he would never want a knee pressed to his son’s or his own neck no matter how many drugs had been used.

We should not make excuses for reprehensible behavior. Rather we should all be motivated by this tragic death to create positive change that better fulfills America’s promise!

orison-based author Harper McDavid’s debut novel “Zapata,” has been announced as the winner of the COMING 2020 Colorado ATTRACTIONS Book Award in the romance category, and received a 2020 Writer’s Award from the Colorado Authors League. Both awards were held virtually, which allowed Clarke Reader authors to be honored for their works, despite the pandemic.

“Zapata” is a blend of suspense and romance that takes place along the Texas/Mexico border that follows engineer Avery McAndrews as she accepts a job in Zapata, and has a range that includes drug cartels and an examination of the challenges women in STEM fields face in the professional world.

We spoke with McDavid about the book, her awards and more.

(Interview edited for brevity and clarity).

Tell me about “Zapata”?

The beginning of the book is based exactly on what I had to do when I was in Zapata. I do environmental work with oil companies, and when I got to the site, we discovered there was a problem - crude oil was disappearing, and we couldn’t figure out why.

Eventually, we found out someone who had worked there previously had been murdered and the cartel had been dipping into the oil. I just went with it, even though it was really different than the book I was working on.

I didn’t start out intending to write a romance - it was more like writing a suspense novel with romance elements. I started working on in 2017, and eventually joined the Romance Writers of America and entered one of their contests. I made it to the finals, and one of the judges offered me a contract.

You received two awards for your debut novel - what was that experience like?

The Colorado Book Award is something I’ve followed for years, so I always knew about it, and I entered “Zapata’ in the romance category. It was different this year because of the pandemic, and we did online readings instead of in-person ones, and the award ceremony was kind of like Hollywood Squares on Zoom. It would’ve been more festive to do the readings at the BookBar like normal, but I’m not complaining, because I’m very happy to have won that award.

The Colorado Author’s League award was the same way. It’s all very surreal. It’s just started to sink in, and it’s very humbling.

It’s a summer like no other. With concerts, festivals, sports games and lots more off the table during the COVID-19 pandemic, kids and families might be going a bit stir-crazy.

Here’s a look at five places to take the kids this year.

Littleton: Littleton Museum Step back in time and let the city melt away at Littleton’s living history museum. Spread over 40 acres beside Ketring Lake, the museum grounds feature two working 19th-century style farms.

The homestead buildings are not open, and neither is the museum’s main building — meaning the nearest air conditioning will likely be in your car. But the museum grounds make for a pleasant stroll, and gargantuan cottonwoods offer shady groves perfect for kicking back with a book.

Kids will dig the resident livestock — a flock of baby lambs cavorts in one pasture, a pair of oxen lumber in another.

Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated. Guests are encouraged to wear masks.

Current hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.

The museum is still offering train rides around the museum grounds, though tickets are limited to maintain social distancing, and ordering online ahead of time is recommended. The Galloping Goose, a quirky passenger vehicle built in the 1930s and typically used for rides, is mothballed for now, in place of openair cars. Train rides run Thursdays through Sundays through the end of August.

Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $5 for kids, with kids under 2 free. Because the museum is operating at reduced capacity, reserving

admission online is recommended.

Face masks are required for all guests 2 and older.

‘Amplify’ voices of Black artists at the Arvada Center In an effort to share the creative voices of Black men through music, performance, dance and spoken word, the Arvada Center has launched a new video series called “Amplify.”

Produced by actor and director Betty Hart, the series features the voices of 15 performers from across the state - only three of whom have performed at the center before.

Participants in the series come from all over the local theater world and were invited to express whatever they want through any avenue they’d prefer, according to provided information.

The Division Engineer, in accordance with §37-92-401, Colorado Revised Statutes (2019), has compiled the list of absolute water rights that he or she “has determined to have been abandoned in whole or in part and which previously have not been adjudged to have been abandoned.”

A complete list of water rights that have been abandoned, in the opinion of the Division Engineer, may be found on the Division of Water Resources (DWR) website https://www.colorado.gov/water.

If you wish to object to the inclusion of any water right on the Division Engineer’s abandonment list, you must file a written statement of objection with the Division Engineer by July 1, 2021. We request that objections be submitted using DWR’s Abandonment Objection Form, which can be obtained on the DWR website (search keyword “Abandonment 2020”) or from any DWR office.

The Abandonment List, with any revisions made as a result of written statements of objection, will be filed with the Water Court by December 31, 2021. Once the list is adjudged by the entry of a decree by the Water Court, such decree will be conclusive as to the abandonment of the water right.

In the following table, U indicates units of either C=cfs or A=acre-ft. The uses being abandoned are either 'All Uses' indicating all decreed uses of the water right, or the individual uses listed, such as Irr=Irrigation. If any aspect of the decreed place of use is being abandoned, that is indicated by 'Yes' in the Place column.

Englewood: Pirates Cove Water Park Water World in Federal Heights is closed this summer, but Englewood’s Pirates Cove makes a decent substitute. Featuring two king-size slides, a lazy river, an epic kids’ funhouse and a classic lap pool with a diving board, the park should leave the kids pretty worn out.

Reservations are required, and admission is in two-hour blocks. Groups of up to eight are allowed. Outside food and drinks are not permitted.

Reservations can be made 72 hours in advance by Englewood residents, or 48 hours in advance by non-residents.

Face masks are required for entry.

Prices vary, but non-resident adults

feature bowling, laser tag, mini-golf, go-karts and bumper boats. The Northglenn location features a ropes course, and Parker’s features an immersive, virtual reality-like “dark ride.”

Reservations are recommended. The parks are offering three-hour “unlimited fun passes” that offer access to all attractions. Face masks are strongly encouraged.
