As discussions continue on the future of the historic Astor House, the Golden History Museums’ collections policy is also receiving some editing. The need to take a look at the policy was prompted after artifacts from the Astor House went to auction this summer as part of the historic building’s renovations. About $10,000 was made from the auction, and the proceeds went into a special fund that can only be used for direct care of items already in the collection or to purchase new artifacts. Community members argued that the auction was done clandestinely — it occurred without proper public notice so the dozens of Golden residents who donated artifacts had no way of getting their items back. Nathan Richie, the museums’ director, stated during a Jan. 19 city council study session that he was deeply saddened that the public believed there is a lack of transparency in the operations of the museums. “We are really trying to work with the highest scope of integrity,” he said. “We love the collection.
