DEVELOPMENTS Denver Tennis Park PCL Construction announced in a news release last month that it completed construction on a new tennis park at 1560 S. Franklin St. Denver Tennis Park will be operated by a nonprofit organization of the same name. The organization hopes to use the park

to help teach kids of all ages and abilities how to play tennis.

The park is scheduled to open this month.

The tennis complex will have seven indoor courts as well as six outdoor courts. The project was put together by Denver Tennis Park, the University of Denver, as well as Denver Public Schools (DPS), which provided some of the funding for storm water drainage at the park. Fundraising for the park is ongoing.

The Denver Tennis Park is nearby to the DPS All City Stadium. The parking lot of the stadium was replaced during the project, and three other adjacent lots were renovated.

BUSINESS OPENINGS Spur Coffee The Littleton-based coffee shop opened a second location off First Avenue and Lincoln Street in mid-October. The coffee company is owned by graphic designers Tandi and Marcel Venter, who moved to Denver from South Africa. The first Spur Coffee opened at 5624 S. Prince St. in Littleton in 2012. The company started as a design studio before transitioning to a coworking space in 2011, and eventually becoming the coffee shop it is today.

The Venter’s son, Tyler, began roasting coffee for the business last year. The Denver location is at 95 Lincoln St., and was formerly a coffee a tea cafe called Platform T. Platform T closed in December 2017 after two years in business. Not long after, Spur had signed a five-year lease on the space.

Spur offers coffee subscriptions and workshops in addition to its cafe menus. The Lincoln Street location has breakfast items as well as a few salads on the menu.

Tokyo Premium Bakery Tokyo Premium Bakery opened at 1540 S. Pearl St. last month, bringing together Japanesestyle breads with classic items such as baguettes, croissants and donuts. The bakery is open Tuesday through Sunday.

The bakery’s website, www.tokyopremiumbakery.com, has forms for people to order shokupan bread loaves in advance. Shokupan is Japanese milk bread.

Nekter Juice Bar opened a new location at 700 Colorado Blvd. last month. It is the company’s fourth location in the Denver metro area.

Nekter Juice Bar The California-based chain of healthy smoothie shops has opened a fourth Colorado location on Colorado Boulevard. Nekter will be located at 700 Colorado Blvd., in the same complex as the Snooze restaurant.

The business also has locations in Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch and Lakewood.

SoulCycle The luxury cycle brand will open its first Colorado studio in Cherry Creek North this month at 265 St. Paul St. according to a news release. The 2,900-square-foot studio will have 64 bikes. It is the first retail store announced for the St. Paul Collection, which will be two tower buildings featuring 55,000-square-feet of retail on the ground floor as well as 165 residences.

SoulCycle classes are in a candlelit room.

Dark studios make for a non-intimidating exercise environment, according to the release.

First time riders can take classes for $20.

Rates are regularly $28 for a drop-in class.

SoulCycle also offers multi-class punch cards.

The Assistance League of Denver held a ribbon cutting for their new space at 6265 E. Evans Ave. The organization was previously off of East Colfax Avenue.

CLOSINGS Les Grues Flower and Gifts Les Grues, a florist located at 476 S. Broadway will be out of the building by January next year. Ron Vicksman has owned the business since 1982, but Les Grues has been in business for around 50 years.

Signs on the windows of the building say Les Grues is having a retirement sale.

Fat Jack’s Super Subs Fat Jack’s Super Subs has closed its three locations - one in Baker off of Broadway as well as one each in the Auraria Campus and in the Lower Highlands neighborhood. The closure was first reported by BusinessDen. The website for the sub shop has been shut down.

The sandwich shop first opened at 1245 E. Colfax Ave. in 2000 by Ryan, Jeff and Mark Ward. The location is now the Rocky Fin Poke Bar, which opened in July of 2017.

Over the years Fat Jack’s expanded throughout Denver and change ownership twice after the Ward brothers first opened it. Signs posted on the Broadway Fat Jack’s from the city of Denver state that the business owed more than $2,300 in taxes.

Table to Tavern The restaurant group closed two of its three locations last month, neighboring restaurants Rosedale and Atticus. The restaurants were open for two and a half years and four and a half years respectively.

The company’s third restaurant, Blackbird Public House, is still open at 305 S. Downing St. The two restaurants were off East Evans Avenue in the Platt Park neighborhood.

The websites for both locations say to visit the Blackbird restaurant and do not give a reason for the closure.

Yoga Pod Cherry Creek The Cherry Creek location of the Boulderbased yoga studio announced on Facebook that it would be closing on Nov. 17. The studio is located at 2780 E. Sixth Ave. The Cherry Creek Yoga Pod had been open for five years. Yoga Pod first started in Boulder, and each location is run as a franchise. “We cannot thank you enough for all your support and patronage over the years. Thank you for bringing so much love and light to our community,” the post said.

The Boulangerie After a little more than one year in business, The Boulangerie bakery closed at 1595 S. Pearl St. in early October.

CHANGES Pearl Wine Company The Pearl Wine Company celebrated its third anniversary on Nov. 3 at the Space Gallery. Proceeds from the event went toward Denver Public Schools. Last year, Pearl Wine raised around $4,000 through the event.

The store sells wine, beer and spirits liquor at 1886 S. Pearl St.

Assistance League of Denver The Assistance League of Denver held a ribbon cutting at its new location at 6265 E. Evans Ave. on Oct. 11.

The nonprofit organization formerly had its thrift store and it’s program services in two different locations in Capitol Hill.

The new location will allow the Assistance League to have everything in one location.

The Assistance League is a nonprofit and is run entirely by volunteers.

The thrift store, which was formerly located at 1331 E. Colfax Ave., is the main revenue driver for the organization outside of donations.

In addition to the thrift store and event space at the Evans location, Assistance League has the Hospital Equipment Lending Program (HELP), assault survivor kits and more.

Councilmember Paul Kashmann spoke at the ribbon cutting, praising the organization’s volunteer efforts.

“The 30,000 hours of volunteer service is truly the epitome of the power of volunteerism,” he said.

Volunteers tuck in Wash Park’s flower beds for winter

First, they pulled out the dead and dying annuals that wouldn’t grow back next year.

Then they scooped up shovelfuls of dirt, flipping and turning it to aerate and loosen the soil. Then they covered the barren plots with tarps. And, in no time at all, thanks to the army of volunteers, the flower beds at Wash Park were ready for winter.

“We couldn’t do it without these volunteers,” said Tom Martinez, one of the gardeners overseeing the annual “Put the

Beds to Bed” operation that ensures the flowerbeds are ready for planting come spring. He has worked with the city for 20 years, 11 of them at Washington Park.

Composed of teams from AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps and members of the community, about 100 volunteers gathered Oct. 20 to follow the directions of staff from Denver Parks and Recreation District in winterizing the flowerbeds. The city’s other parks, such as City Park and Civic Center Park, also have volunteer events to turn over the flower beds.

“Put the Beds to Bed” started more than 20 years ago, said Scott Gilmore, deputy executive director of parks and planning.

“As long as our parks department has been around, people have been volunteering in our parks,” Gilmore said. The depart-

ment is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.

Gilmore estimated that the Parks and Recreation office saves $1 million a year on these kinds of operations by using volunteers.

Volunteers began arriving at 8:30 a.m., helping themselves to coffee, orange juice and bagels provided by Parks and Recreation. Once everything was in place, the gardeners overseeing the operation reviewed safety tips and tasks.

Thirty minutes after volunteers were set loose, one of the AmeriCorps NCCC teams had completed its part.

“AmeriCorps is awesome,” Martinez said.

While ripping out plants may seem like a waste, Parks and Recreation is only removing the annual plants that die off during the winter and don’t rejuvenate each year.

clear them, are barren,” said Tina Myers, volunteer program administrator.

The dead plants are composted and used in the future to help new flowers grow.

Composting is only part of the district’s focus on sustainability, however. Several of the park’s flowerbeds host perennials that come back year after year when the snow melts. By planting these in some of the flowerbeds, the park retains some sense of structure, and the gardeners don’t have to grow as many plants from seeds for next year.

The district is already hard at work on next year’s flower bed designs, but those designs remain a secret until May when staff and volunteers will plant the flowerbeds again. In the past, Gilmore said, their gardeners have used shapes from nature, such as sunbursts and moons, as well as Denver’s city flag.

Wash Park author talks about Denver’s hidden gems Staff Report Since 1976, Rich Grant has called Washington Park home. He’s traveled the world as a writer, but no matter where he goes, the park is still his favorite place. The quality of light in the area turns Smith Lake into a reflecting pool, creating stunning images of the sky on the water.

“It’s the one thing that hasn’t changed. The neighborhood is so fantastic,” Grant said.

“It’s my favorite place on Earth.”

Before transitioning to working as a writer full-time, Grant worked as the director of communications at Visit Denver for 35 years. Working at Visit Denver helped Grant

to learn the ins and outs of the city, as well as the location of its hidden gems.

Last month, the second edition of Grant’s book “100 Things to do in Denver Before You Die,” with co-author Irene Rawlings, came out. Instead of a guide book, Grant said to think of it more like a conversation with Grant friends on where to go in Denver. With the growth of Denver over the years, Grant said even long-term

residents will find the book useful.

“It’s amazing how many people brag `I haven’t been downtown in 20 years,’ ” he said. “They will be amazed. They will just be completely shattered by what’s happened downtown.”

The struggle with writing a book like this, Grant said, is that it can become “obsolete” the moment it’s written when businesses close down or move. The book’s first edition was published in 2016. Grant and Rawlings operate a Facebook page to go along with the book that gives up-to-date detail on suggestions within the book as well as hikes around the area.

The book is divided into categories: res-

taurants, nearby hikes, city festivals, cultural events and more. Instead of focusing on what could be considered the best of Denver, Grant said they focused on what makes it more unique, such as the Buckhorn Exchange restaurant that opened in 1893 in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The restaurant’s walls are lined with nearly 600 mountedanimal heads and it was the first restaurant to be issued a liquor license in the state.

“There’s no shortage to find the 25 best new restaurants,” he said. “There’s a lot of things that if you’ve lived here for a while you take for granted, and there’s a lot of things that people who’ve lived here forever don’t know about.”

University Park group receives $9,000 from Historic Denver Staff Report In February this year, a Queen Anne home from 1898 was demolished in the University Park neighborhood. Tired of seeing homes with potential for historic protection being scraped in favor of newer, larger homes, resident Rosemary Stoffel decided to take action.

Stoffel is part of the Community Preservation committee of the University Park Community Council (UPCC). After applying for and receiving an Action Fund grant from Historic Denver, she gathered community support, raising $2,250 from other residents in the neighborhood. Historic Denver is a nonprofit organization that helps to preserve important historical buildings in the city. UPCC received $9,000 in funds from the organization.

“I’ve lived in the neighborhood for a long, long time, and I feel like there is awareness that hasn’t been there before,” Stoffel said. “People are opening their eyes and saying `my neighborhood is changing.’”

to bring in old photographs or any research they had done on the history and architecture of the area.

Stoffel said she is hoping that learning more about the architectural significance of buildings in the neighborhood will prevent more homes from being scraped. She feels that owners of homes that have been demolished didn’t have that knowledge.

“There was really no understanding of what an important part of the neighborhood these buildings are,” she said.

The neighborhood has several different architectural styles, such as mid-century modern homes and Queen Anne homes. Stoffel began giving historic walking tours to show some of these styles to residents and architecture lovers.

In addition to historical significance, some of the homes have cultural significance. One street of homes by Observatory Park is knows as Professors Row because a large number of teachers from the University of Denver lived on that block.

Museums, galleries across the city offering special events, discounts Staff Report Arts organizations across the Front Range will be celebrating the 12th annual Denver Arts Week this month. From theater to museums and local galleries, Denverites can get their art fix with free days and discounts from Nov. 2-10.

Many theaters, such as the Colorado Symphony and the Newman Center at the University of Denver, are offering discounted tickets. And galleries are having sales on art pieces starting at $52.80.

Over the last decade, Denver Arts Week programming has expanded to include all genres of art, said Jayne Buck, the vice president of tourism at Visit Denver. The event also helps to bring awareness and new audiences to the organizations that participate, she added.

“Denver Arts Week is the one time of the year to focus on the wide variety of arts and culture that we all have right in our own backyards,” Buck said. “Visit Denver invests in the marketing that targets the metro area and the region to increase awareness of the city’s vibrant arts and culture, and Denver Arts Week programming generates new audiences for the participating organizations, events and galleries.”

Many local neighborhoods will have special First Friday events during Denver Arts Week, including the Santa Fe Arts District, which will feature an inaugural parade on Nov. 2 for Dia de los Muertos. The Golden Triangle, Tennyson Street and River North will have First Friday events as well.

In addition to arts week events, Denver is hosting the annual Denver Film Festival, which runs through Nov. 11. This is the

41st year, and it is being held at the Sie Film Center at 2510 E. Colfax Ave. and other venues around the city. Visit www. denverfilmfestival.denverfilm.org.

Denver Fashion Week will also have events throughout the city from Nov. 4-11. Denver Fashion Week has events in fall and spring. The November event will include several workshops, as well as fashion shows highlighting local designers, hair and a show for teens and children.

‘It’s all I lived for six or seven years’ Long after chemical waste was removed from Overland, residents still feel its impact

ore than 30 years ago, Helene Orr was spending every second of spare time reading documents on chemical waste.

Often she would be up until 2 or 3 in the morning trying to make sense of legal papers dealing with the Shattuck Chemical Company — which planned, along with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to leave nearly 6 acres of unsafe waste near her home in Overland Park.

Before the boom of Denver brought new developments to the southern part of the city, residents of Overland Park were fighting a battle to remove decades’ worth of chemical waste from their quiet neighborhood. Over the years Shattuck Chemical had worked with several materials in its factory nearby — leaving behind waste from lead, radium, uranium and more — before being shut down in 1984. But by then, the site had caught the attention of the EPA. Many people were drawn to the issue when parts of Shattuck, like the smokestack, began to be torn down.

“They just demolished it and all kinds of radioactive dust went everywhere,” Orr said.

Shattuck first opened in 1918. The company processed chemicals for more than six decades. Both neighborhood residents as well as Denver city officials joined together in the 1990s to fight for clean soil and groundwater and to remove solid waste materials from Shattuck — a project which wasn’t completed until 2006. Now, a new development project is being built on the site.

Although the legal battles of what to do with the waste have been settled for years now, the long-term impact has taken a toll on the community.

‘A remarkable fight’ In late 1982, the EPA began investigating the Shattuck land as part of a larger Superfund site connected to hazardous chemicals throughout Denver.

Superfund sites allow the EPA to work with state governments to either clean the sites or have the responsible companies reimburse the government for cleanups led by the agency. The law was first put into place by Congress in 1980, and is called the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).

Shortly after the agency’s investigation, the Denver Radium Site, which included Shattuck, was put on the National Priorities List in 1983.

Orr lived a few blocks from the Shattuck buildings, which operated at 1805 S. Bannock St., just north of Jewell Avenue. Once the EPA put the Shattuck site on a list of national Superfund locations, Orr and several other residents began to take action, going door-to-door alerting neighbors to a brewing problem. “It really was a remarkable fight,” Orr said of their efforts to get the EPA to remove waste materials from the neighborhood.

After several years of struggling against both the state and federal governments, Orr said she is trying to move forward. She got rid of all the documents related to Shattuck, putting it out of sight and out of mind.

“It was a big chunk of our lives. You kind of just want to forget about it at some point,” she said. “It’s all I lived for six or seven years.”

ing the waste can also create a future Superfund site, he added.

Overland Park resident Helene Orr agreed, saying that at the time they were just fighting for the saftey of their neighborhood.

“Hindsight’s 20/20, when you’re in the trenches you’re just looking at your neighborhood,” she said. “It was a good solution for us to have it removed, for sure. It doesn’t solve the ultimate problem, unfortunately.”

A murky history When Shattuck first opened a century ago, it was part of the radium industry, extracting uranium materials and working with other chemicals like molybdenum.

Radium was frequently prescribed as a medical treatment by doctors after World War I. In the 1950s, Shattuck transitioned into fully working to process uranium ore.

At the time, Shattuck was one of the main producers of uranium in the world, said Shaun Sullivan.

Sullivan was the assistant city attorney of Denver when the EPA and state government first came to clean up the Shattuck site in the 1990s. He worked in environmental law. In April, he became the city and county attorney of Broomfield.

Uranium had been discovered in western Colorado, and ore was brought to Denver to be processed. The problem with uranium production, Sullivan said, is that it takes a lot of ore to extract a very small amount of uranium, leaving lots of waste materials. After the industry shifted to production in Belgium, Shattuck started going through less uranium until it closed in the 1980s.

“The industry started to die and people started to forget about the sites in Colorado,” Sullivan said — until the EPA put the site on the National Priorities List.

Shattuck was the eighth location included in the Denver Radium Superfund site in 1983. While the EPA got to work cleaning up the other locations, it started reaching out to the Overland neighborhood as well as city and state officials to decide what to do with waste materials from the chemical company.

In 1992 the EPA opted to keep the material on-site in a record of decision document released in January. Saloman Inc., which owned Shattuck, was required by

KAILYN LAMB law to pay for the cleanup. The company paid $26 million to mix clean soil and gravel with the contaminated materials, which was then piled into the center of the site into a tower structure and covered in concrete to prevent leakage.

“It didn’t make sense to dig it all up,” said Fonda Apostolopoulos, a project manager for the state Department of Public Health and Environment who works on the Shattuck site.

He added that the concrete later was what was typically done in the 1990s to clean up similar sites.

But the city of Denver had concerns about the solution, Sullivan said. That was 6 acres of land that

could never be used by the city for hundreds, even thousands of years.

“We thought it was an inappropriate remedy for that location,” Sullivan said.

Residents also worried that leaving hazardous materials would have negative impacts on their health. Orr said several of the residents in the area have had some type of cancer, including a woman who lived almost directly next door to Shattuck and died of breast cancer.

“Cancer of course is extremely prevalent and it’s really hard to prove causation,” she said. “But (the rates) still seemed really high.”

It wasn’t until 2000 that the EPA reversed the decision — a first for agency, Sullivan said — and decided to move the waste offsite after it was found some of the material had leaked into the groundwater.

By 2006 the waste material had been removed.

Moving into the future Every five years, the state Department of Public Health and Environment performs surveys on the Shattuck land to make sure the groundwater leaks remain at safe levels. The results can be found on the EPA’s website, with the exception of a test that was done in September, Apostolopoulos said.

The results from that survey will likely be done being processed in December, he added.

Now that a new apartment complex is being built on the land, Apostolopoulos said he has helped the developers do additional tests to ensure the safety of the land. Dallas-based Encore Enterprises is building 226 units for the project.

Apostolopoulos added that the developer added a radon gauge on the building as an extra precaution. Encore Enterprises did not respond to a request for comment.

“It’s a great success story,” Apostolopoulos said. “Here’s a property that was basically worthless and now it’s productive.”

Weld County facility a great outing for families

It was a sunny, pleasant fall day for a recent drive through the plains in southern Weld County and many of the inhabitants of the Wild Animal Sanctuary were basking — on the grass, on platforms, in the openings to underground shelters, next to small wooden structures — at home on the Colorado prairie. Although most are certainly not native species, each has a story and most were rescued from truly difficult situations.

Before the animals came to the sanctuary, they were often confined in cages, without adequate food or veterinary care. Some came from badly-run zoos, others from roadside attractions — or from owners who

bought a cute baby tiger or bear cub at an exotic animal auction and soon found it was not a cuddly pet after all.

Fortunately, the sanctuary has an on-site veterinary hospital and two veterinarians who can supervise care as needed. The veterinary school at Colorado State University is also available to help.

Each animal has a name: Mafalda, who had serious dental problems, and Walter, who had been declawed and is blind, are grizzlies from a terrible zoo in Argentina.

The zoo was forced to close and the grizzlies were rescued and now live in a large area, with brick paths to help Walter navigate to his den and to food and water.

Readers who have lived in the metro area for a while may recall an account of the rescue of 25 lions from Bolivian circuses in 2011 after a law was passed there forbidding using animals in circus performances.

From Boy Scouts to drag racing, Ronnie Crawford has seen it all

Over the past 75 years, Overland Park resident Ronnie Crawford has done a lot with his life. By the age of 15 he had become an Eagle Scout. A few years later he started drag racing in the National Hot Rod Association. In the mid-1960s he spent time as a Scout leader, and as a member of the Army Reserves, all while attending school at Ohio State University for a degree in fine arts.

Racing cars introduced Crawford to a lifelong love for cars. Although he stopped racing in 1970, he now finds old Ford Falcon cars and restores them. He has seven Falcons of different models - vans, sedans and a hatchback style. He uses some of the

cars for parts, and others he is working on repairing.

“Some of these cars I just acquired to keep them from going to the crusher years ago,” he said. “They would have been gone.”

But despite his love of cars, Crawford still said he considers himself a conservationist. He works with Denver Trout Unlimited to help keep the South Platte River clean. He called himself a “tree huggin’ hot rodder,” joking that he even thought about making it into a bumper sticker.

“You don’t find that many people that are both,” he said. “Somehow, I don’t know what it is, but they don’t mix. But they should.”

When he moved to Denver, he pursued his passion in the arts, focusing on photography and owning several vintage shops along Broadway while he lived in the Washington Park neighborhood.

“I really didn’t know what I was going to do, but I just liked old stuff,” he said. “I knew retail, but I didn’t know I would be the guy behind the counter owning it.”

In 1978 he opened Rudely Decadent, which was located at Arkansas Avenue and Broadway for 10 years. The store offered vintage items from the 1940s to the 1960s.

When he placed advertising for the shop, Crawford said it was usually long lists of items he was looking for.

The ads took him to homes all over the city, where he found a slew of unique items such as a Civil War era family tree that had locks of hair from each family member. But for Crawford, some of the most memorable things about looking for vintage fare where the people themselves.

“It was so delightful,” he said of meeting people. He added that Rudely Decadent was popular with bands, including a “Prisoner of Rock `n’ Roll” era Bruce Springsteen.

“I had 45 minutes with Bruce Springsteen alone,” he said. “We had the greatest conversation, we just talked about old rock `n’ roll.”

Crawford went on to open and operate two other vintage shops on Broadway: American Aces, which specialized in

Levi’s brand jeans and eventually moved into women’s wear, and American Vogue, which he closed in 2008, retiring from retail life.

In his downtime from working behind the cash registers and searching for vintage clothes, Crawford could be found behind the bar at the Skylark Lounge 1998. There are still days where Crawford can be found mixing drinks. Now that he’s retired, bartending helps give him his social fix, Crawford said.

With his shoulder-length gray curls clipped back and an earring in his left ear, Crawford said he’ll occasionally have customers come in and recognize him from his retail days. Long hair is something Crawford has always taken pride in. In his Army days he wore a short wig with a military cut every day to cover his long hair.

Many of the people also remember the items they bought from his stores.

“It’s stuff that people still have that they bought there. It wasn’t throw away stuff, it was all fun stuff,” he said. “That makes me feel so good. It makes me smile.”

Cooking is the currency of love Food tastes better when it’s shared with friends.

To me, cheesy as it sounds, cooking is the currency of love.

Over the years, friends have moved away, new friends have joined and, although we don’t get together to cook every week any more, we still make sure to meet up every once in a while over a homemade meal.

My love of cooking for people goes back to childhood family holidays.

We’d pack up the car and head to my grandparents’ house in Westminster. Food would sit on the kitchen counters, buffet style, as my pile of cousins, siblings, aunts and uncles filed through with plates of turkey and mashed potatoes. The holidays were when my family would get together and laugh over our meal, enjoy each other’s company and, depending on the day, cheer on the Broncos or the Avalanche.

As an adult, I now bring my own dish to the table at family meals. I love planning for my family’s various events — a raspberry pie for the whole family because it’s my grandpa’s favorite, potatoes at my dad’s because he doesn’t like vegetables, adventurous international foods with my mom, and so on.

But like Julia, my favorite person to cook for

eople who love to eat are always the best people.”

Julia Child wrote that in a letter to her friend, Avis DeVoto, in early 1953. Julia is known around the world for her love of food — especially butter — and many people use her quotes about not liking diets, cakes or quotes on how she found cooking to show their own love of food. But this particular quote is my favorite because it also combines Julia’s great love for people.

In the various memoirs written about her life, Julia is constantly prepping for dinner parties. She loved to cook for other people, particularly for her husband Paul Child. Alex Prud’homme, the Childs’ great-nephew, wrote in “The French Chef in America: Julia Child’s Second Act” that people were always knocking at the Childs’ door of their Boston home for dinner.

I have been so lucky in my own friendships.

In my last few years of college at MSU Denver I met my boyfriend, Will, and eventually several of his friends. In 2013, Will and I joined in on our friends’ family dinner tradition. One of us would host and everyone would bring a dish. On Sunday nights we’d catch up on life over plates of homemade noodles, tikka masala, guacamole, whatever the theme was for that day.

is my partner in crime. For the past seven years, Will and I have spent time huddled in kitchens across the state, sampling soups and sauces. Will’s specialty is guacamole or hot wings, mine is Alfredo or carbonara with homemade noodles.

We are our own worst critics, and Will nearly always finds something wrong with the dishes he makes. But despite Will’s pickiness about his cooking, there are few people with whom I would rather share a kitchen.

Sharing a meal brings warmth to friendships.

For me, it starts with a good cookbook: What should I make? What will people like best?

Over the years I have collected cookbooks with cuisine from around the world, including “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” by Julia, with her co-authors and friends, Louisette Bertholle and Simone Beck. My favorite pages are usually earmarked or stained with flour and oil.

The recipes don’t have to be complicated. The presentation doesn’t need to be on par with the finest restaurants in the world. Julia spent the later years of her life making cooking accessible to everyone, assuring viewers of “The French Chef ” that it was OK to break a few eggs in the kitchen.

It will all turn out fine in the end.

have a dab of Shakespeare (1582-1616) memorized, and that’s about it. I am a failed scholar when it comes to most of it.

Romeo and Juliet was set in Minneapolis and St. Paul. I think.

I’ve tried.

I am daunted by the language. I admit it.

I have tried to enter sideways, through films like “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (1935) and “Forbidden Planet” (1956).

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” was first performed on New Year’s Day, 1605.

Characters are named Snout, Snug, Puck, Bottom and Flute.

It’s one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays.

It has been staged repeatedly and filmed several times. Woody Allen even took a crack at it.

“Forbidden Planet” has been compared to “The Tempest.”

I know one line from “The Tempest,” and I keep it handy.

“We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.”

It is often misquoted: “We are such stuff as dreams are made of.”

Either way, I can gather it up and make sense of it.

A lot of Shakespeare takes more time to get through, and that’s when my depth of inquiry disappoints me. In other words, I’m lazy.

There was a time when I thought I should have far more Shakespeare in my golf bag. It’s not going to turn out that way.

I look at the wording and something happens.

When I have to reread a line three times, I lift my head, look around the room, and plan lunch.

I appreciate the themes, and Shakespeare’s contributions.

I feel the same way about Mozart (1756-91), but I haven’t been as lazy about Mozart as I have been about Shakespeare. The reason is simple: Mozart enters through a different sense. Hearing.

Both of them died young. Mozart, particularly.

He only made it to 35.

Shakespeare was married to Anne Hathaway.

That’s the kind of things that sticks in my head.

Trivia.

I am lining up my List of Regrets, trying to keep it short, not wanting the depression that might come from certain failures to experience some things.

Number One is my complete failure to have strummed.

I watch these boys and girls with their Stra-

tocasters, and it grieves me that I am not one of them.

What else? It’s looking like I will never see The Great Wall, although I have been to Hoover Dam. No pyramids for me either. Nor Mexico’s ancient ruins.

Jennifer has been to Dachau. I haven’t. Probably won’t. Will wish I had.

I’m thankful for The Travel Channel, but it’s like kissing only by watching others do it.

I could take a month or more and immerse myself in one of my regrets. Except I won’t.

My photographer has a 9-year-old son who can play a piece on the piano, and then play it again in a different key.

I don’t even know what a key is.

His classmates apparently bully him because he isn’t as involved in sports as they are.

I wonder if Yo-Yo Ma was bullied? Or Jimmy Page?

I told “Veronica” to get her son a Stratocaster.

(As I wrote this, I listened to Mozart’s “Piano Sonata No. 5, Andante in G.” Perfect.)

City manages construction to help neighbors GUEST COLUMN

ur economy is booming, and the new construction to bring additional housing, office space and retail businesses is clearly evident in this boom. However, the negative impacts of these projects have become serious issues that City Council and Denver Public Works Department are now addressing to minimize undesirable effects on residents, retailers, workers, shoppers and tourists.

Over the past two months, Eulois Cleckley, the new executive director of Denver Public Works, and his staff have been reviewing citywide improvement recommendations that I and many neighborhood and business leaders have proposed.

On Oct. 8, Public Works described the following improvements to help mitigate specific issues and implement the recommendations of city council members and community leaders either now or in January 2019.

1. Parking management and enforcement — License-plate readers have now been added for greater enforcement efficiency in identifying parking violations. To address the high percentage of enforcement staff vacancies, pay levels have been recently increased, and non-benefited positions will be upgraded to include benefits in January.

2. Construction worker parking plans — Effective January 2019, all new proposed construction

projects will have to provide defined parking plans for construction workers before a building rightof-way usage permit will be granted. Incentives will also be considered to increase compliance by contractors and workers.

3. Pedestrian sidewalk canopies — The present regulations on sidewalk canopies for pedestrian safety have not been implemented and enforced.

The regulations will be enhanced and enforced, beginning in January.

4. Construction communications — Public Works has not held construction communication meetings to make the public aware of upcoming activities that may affect neighborhoods and businesses. Routine monthly construction progress review meetings will be held and chaired by Public Works to ensure attendance and participation by all contractors to improve communication. Construction plans, such as street closures and canopies that may disrupt retail business and neighborhood traffic flow and affect pedestrian safety, will be regular issues for discussion. The first meeting was scheduled be held in October.

5. Traffic management plans for street and sidewalk closures — The present policies and procedures on street and sidewalk closures have not been effective in preventing excessive closures. The policies will be evaluated as to the length of time

a closure is allowed, the dimensions of closures that increase the construction site and the effects on pedestrian and traffic flow. An evaluation was scheduled to occur in October with implementation in January.

6. Intersection and alley parking signage — Cars and trucks parked too close to alley and intersection entrances do not provide sufficient visibility for safe car exits. Residents can now request an evaluation of the need for intersection and alley signage to provide greater visibility of and for street traffic approaching an exit or intersection. The present regulations are for 5 feet of clearance from an alley entrance and 20 feet from an intersection.

Residents should contact 311 to request additional signage and report infractions.

7. Damage to infrastructure and streetscape — Each current construction project must post a construction bond to repair damaged adjacent infrastructure and streetscape. Since damage repair using these bond funds has not been enforced, taxpayer funds in the city budget have had to be used for repairs. Greater regulations will be developed to address existing conditions prior to construction, bond amount determinations, the evaluation of post-construction damage, and the use of bond SEE NEW, P14

The mailbox lately is gobblin’ up the election fliers and outlines, and the news media is stuffinged with sage and chestnutty advice. Some is straightforward and some has marshmallows on top. Do due diligence, friends, and know who’s who and who’s for what. And VOTE! I used to give out Turkey Awards (the competition for whom to roast was intense). This year, it would go to people who do not take advantage of our freedom to vote and then, gripe —ah, the gripes of wrath!

As you sit down to eat, or stand ready to serve a charitable meal on Thanksgiving Day, you will say grace — whether you give thanks to a deity or simply to all people wise and kind and helping those in need. Because American life grants us many blessings. The pilgrims gave thanks for getting to this country, being helped by native residents who shared food and survival tips. Let’s do likewise.

Early people all over the world knew that they must treat the Earth well, if it was to reciprocate.

Same thing now. We are NOT doing our best for Mother Nature and Hack-Kaff-Gasp-Clang-Bang is our lot. What are we thinking? When all the turkeys are tainted, waddle we do? Have Turnip Day? Well, they may be easier to carve, but not crave.

Celebrating veterans Vets Day: is there a parade? Now that our kids aren’t in marching bands, we aren’t up on parades.

We were grateful they were in them, and playing flute and clarinet, which are easy to transport.

Honoring vets seemed a perfect occasion for a fulluniform parade. There’s something stirring about marching band music. Is Sousa still a stalwart standby? Do soldiers have music to wage peace by?

I hope all schools are tuned in to plenty of music.

It’s always with you to pep you up, calm you down, tap your toe or make you smile. All the arts are important, but you don’t need a pencil, paintbrush or play to do music, right there in the air, or in your head, or in a bunker.

Soon, it will be time for the resident bears to tank up on food and hibernate in their provided underground dens, so a mid-winter visitor won’t be likely to see them, although we were told that they do come out briefly at times for a snack.

Also on the grounds, in separate areas: wolves, jaguars, black bears, wolf hybrids, mountain lions, a few coati mundis and a few kit foxes, a porcupine, an emu and some alpacas. Included are some who were among 18 caged animals found in a “wildlife education” exhibit in a mall in Iowa that was closed down by the USDA. Giving plants a second life in winter months

C

ome fall, where do plants go when they die at Denver Botanic Gardens? Most, as you might expect, go to the compost pile, but a select few get a lucky break: a chance to be displayed again.

Each fall, armfuls of GUEST cuttings are hung and dried in our tool room COLUMN for winter arrangements.

Jennifer These come from “evMiller erlasting” plants, those bearing flowers that stay crisp and colorful long after they’re cut.

Statice (Limonium sinuatum), globe amaranth (Gomphrena globosa) and strawflower (Xerochrysum bracteatum) are among the most popular of these flowers, although an array of other plant material also holds its form for months after it’s cut.

This includes the seeding umbels of dill (Anethum graveolens), seed heads of giant sea holly (Eryngium giganteum), pods of Missouri evening primrose (Oenothera macrocarpa), dried okra fruits (Abelmoschus esculentus) and stems of dogwood (Cornus sericea) and willow (Salix). Each of these not only keeps its shape when dried, but can take a good battering from weather.

The trick to lasting arrangements is twofold: selecting plant materials that are papery, leathery or woody, and knowing when to harvest them. For example, flowers should be cut for drying before they begin to form seeds. Otherwise, they’ll likely fall apart as they dry.

It’s also helpful to hang materials for drying the same day they’re cut. This prevents flowers and stems from becoming bent in unnatural ways. Bunches of flowers can be secured into bundles with a rubber band, then hung upside down in a cool, dim room until stiff.

If the arrangement will be outside for more than a few weeks, consider spraying dried flowers with a light coat of clear shellac to keep them fresh looking. This will also make them more durable. Never spray material used in arrangements meant to attract wildlife.

Play with materials to see what works best. Then comes the fun part — assembly. The most striking containers have contrasting shapes, textures and colors.

• Plant a small Colorado spruce (Picea pungens) in a pot and decorate it with fairy lights, jingle bells wired into acorn caps, bleached pine cones and a garland of red strawflowers, then top it with an umbel of

white-washed dill seeds.

• Anchor tree branches in a container, then attach sprigs of dried globe amaranth, bunches of hawthorn berries (Crataegus crus-galli), acorn bells, dried giant sea holly flowers and natural ornaments, such as Missouri evening primrose pods painted with polka-dots.

As Denver continues to grow, so does its vibrant restaurant scene

O

n a Wednesday afternoon, the staff are getting ready to open at 12@Madison in Congress Park. Music plays while Chef Jeff Osaka rolls out dough for a lemon dessert.

Osaka opened his first 12 restaurant in the Ballpark neighborhood on Election Day in 2008. Back then, the city was still a steak and potatoes kind of town, with few options for adventurous diners, he said. The location closed in 2014, and he opened the new one in Congress Park in 2016.

Over the years the city has grown, and that growth has brought in a more diverse group of people that are looking for a wider range in their cuisine. As a Japanese American growing up in Los Angeles, Osaka was one of those people. Back in California, Osaka tried food from around the world, including the ramen dishes his family would eat at home.

“People are starting to venture out,” he said.

Since he opened the first 12 location, Osaka has been building a miniature empire. He is now the chef at Osaka Ramen, three Sushi-Ramas -- with two more set to open, 12@Madison, as well as Tammen’s Fish Market in the Denver Central Market in the River North Neighborhood. His restaurants can be found across the city. He also has a Sushi-Rama in Lone Tree, with a new location set to open in SEE RESTAURANTS, P13

As Denver has grown, so has the restaurant scene. Jeff Osaka, who runs several ramen and sushi restaurants throughout the state, said that when he first moved here in the mid-2000s, the city was still a “steak and potatoes” place.

GREAT AMERICAN BEER FESTIVAL AWARDS The Great American Beer Festival (GABF) may be over, but Colorado scored a few medals to remember it by. The festival is held annually toward the end of September in downtown Denver. This was the 37th annual GABF event, which brings in hundreds of breweries from around the country.

Bronze, Silver and Gold medals are awarded in more than 100 categories, which are divided by beer type such as blondes, stouts, IPAs and more. Colorado breweries took home 32 awards during the 2018 GABF event.

Off of Broadway in the Baker neighborhood, Joseph Kim is also working toward building a restaurant empire. The Denver native opened his first Dae Gee Korean BBQ restaurant in Westminster in 2010.

Since then, he has opened two locations in Denver, and a location in Aurora. He has two other locations lined up that are under construction: a second spot in Aurora, and one in Ft. Collins.

At the time he opened the first Dae Gee, which means pig in Korean, Kim said that Psy’s song “Gangnam Style” had just become popular. With a growing fascination in K-Pop (Korean Pop) music and the culture around it, Kim said the time was right to enter into the restaurant market.

But Kim has bigger plans than reaching the small population of Koreans in Colorado. He’s hoping he can use K-Pop’s popularity to bring its food into the mainstream. Eventually, he wants to bring Dae Gee to other states. “(K-Pop) put Korean culture on the map,” he said. “We’re not trying to reach a small Korean population here. There’s a huge opportunity.”

Both Osaka and Kim had to start small.

In Asian foods, there are some more exotic flavors and ingredients that Americans aren’t used to eating, Kim said. By taking something like barbeque which crosses both cultures, Kim said he has been able to educate people coming in to Dae Gee about some of Korea’s popular dishes such as bulgogi, marinated slices of beef or

“I think that’s helped us tremendously to bridge that gap,” he said.

Osaka agreed. For restaurants it can also be expensive to bring in the more exotic menu items without knowing if locals will eat it, Osaka added, saying “there’s not enough of a native population to warrant that.”

But Colorado’s palate is changing.

People have become more interested in international cuisines. This is a benefit for both diners and the chefs, Osaka said.

aries when it comes to food. Even classics like French food are beginning to see a more modern resurgence. ChoLon has been serving Chinese-style soup dumplings with a French onion-style soup filling and gruyere cheese. The restaurant’s owner, ChoLon Restaurant Group is also opening a modern French restaurant next door to ChoLon on the 16th Street Mall.

Fusion foods are becoming more common, Osaka said. Chefs that started out making one food are starting to pair it with another. “A lot of chefs are diversifying their portfolio,” he said of the trend.

Location can also be a factor. Osaka opened Osaka Ramen in the River North neighborhood in Denver in 2015.

Around that time, the neighborhood was beginning to become more popular.

The neighborhood has restaurants from around the world, with few doing the same types of food, Osaka said. Even having an international airport can change the way people eat. With direct flights to and from places around the globe, people have many opportunities to expand their palate, Osaka said.

“It really brings the world a lot closer.”

Find your new favorite local watering hole

he booze scene in Denver is growing. The city has a collection of bars, old and new. Breweries are popping up left and right, creating every style of beer under the sun, and distilleries are quickly following suit.

If you have relatives coming out for the holidays, and are looking to show off the wild side of south Denver, this list can help you get started. It will also help if you’re looking to escape your in-laws - if only for an hour or two. With more than 500 liquor licenses listed in the state Department of Revenue for bars, breweries and other tap rooms in the city of Denver, people have plenty of options to choose from. Here are some of our favorites at the Washington Park Profile:

THE POST BREWING CO.: The Post first opened in Lafayette and has since expanded to Longmont, Boulder and Denver in the Rosedale neighborhood. The Rosedale location opened in January of 2017. In addition to brewing all its own beer at the Lafayette location, The Post offers a full menu of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and other classic comfort food options.

The restaurant also brings in rotating sides to help change things up.

Colleen Clark, the general manager of the Denver location, said that having the full menu helps to set them apart from other breweries in the area. Since the food is pretty filling by itself, she said the

beers are on the lighter side in order to pair with the meal.

“The beer definitely lightens it up,” Clark said.

She added that the reason she loves The Post is because of the intimate feel within the restaurant - despite how busy it can get on the weekends.

Clark and the restaurant chef Johnathan Reyes work closely with their staff to make sure things run smoothly.

SKYLARK LOUNGE: Scott Heron took over the Skylark Lounge in 1998, turning it into the rockabilly local hot spot that it is today, but its history goes back to 1943.

Building a bar during World War II was not done often, Heron said. Back then, Denver still had a streetcar system and South Broadway was much quieter than it is today.

“If you can imagine Broadway with all the streetcars, kind of an old timey street,” Heron said.

Heron has paid homage to many of the rock `n’ roll greats from the post-WWII era, with posters of Elvis Presley, and other musicians of the time, as well as movie posters. The downstairs area has space for live music on weekends. The

bar also offers 36 beers on tap.

The upstairs area, the Pair o’ Dice Poolroom is lined with several pool tables, as well as a long shuffle board and darts.

The pool room first opened in 2006. Pair o’ Dice is only open Thursday through Saturday from 6 p.m.-2 a.m.

Though the bar has TV sets, Heron says they are rarely on.

Instead, he wants the bar to be a place where people of all ages can have conversations.

“It’s kind of become a dinosaur,” he said. “It’s just a place where people still go to talk.”

DOS LUCES: Dos Luces is one of the newer locations on this list. The brewery opened over the summer on South Broadway. Dos Luces doesn’t make regular beer, instead the brewery opts for fermented corn drinks that date back to the Incas and the Aztecs in South America - chicha and pulque.

Owner Judd Belstock said he was drawn to these kinds of drinks because he and his co-founder Sam Alcaine wanted to bring beer to the market that used corn as its fermented grain. In the `60s Belstock’s father spent time in Peru as part of the Peace Corps., and had tried chicha while there. Alcaine also teaches about corn fermentation at Cornell University in New York.

“No body else really in the country is doing quite what I’m doing,”

Belstock said.

Dos Luces is steeped in the ancient culture of the Aztecs and Incas. The name of the brewery comes from the name for the sun and the moon.

The brewery offers a regular of both the chicha and pulque, plus some seasonal rotations of each. There is pumpkin spice chicha, as well as a strawberry and nutmeg pulque.

Corn-based drinks means the items brewed by Dos Luces are gluten free.

Dos Luces has several rotating guest taps and nonalcoholic drinks.

LAWS WHISKEY HOUSE: Though breweries are still taking the city by storm, distilleries are starting to pop up in higher numbers around Denver as well. Laws Whiskey House first opened seven years ago, and offers tours of its distilling space, as well as a tap room where whiskey lovers can savor 12 different variations of the spirit.

Crystal Barrios, the taproom manager at Laws, said the distillery only makes whiskey and sources ingredients from Colorado.

“That’s what really makes Colorado whiskey, Colorado whiskey,” she said.

Colorado whiskey is also special in that is doesn’t have to age quite as long as some its national counterparts. Barrios said that the “sweet spot” for whiskey in Kentucky is around 10 years. Colorado’s elevations changes the way the whiskey ages, which means it doesn’t have to age

quite as long.

Laws Whiskey House offers tours of its distillery and taproom, which Barrios said are focused on educating people on both the history of whiskey, as well as the history of the business. She joked that they call the location the whiskey church - spreading “the good word about the good spirit.”

Tours are offered multiple times a day from Wednesday through Saturday. The tour is $10, but participants get the money back in store credit at the end of the tour.

Denver plans for $1.46 billion in general fund Affordable housing, transportation highlighted in proposed budget Staff Report The mayor’s office has released the 2019 budget for the city of Denver. The budget will allocate $1.46 billion in the general fund. Nearly $1 billion of the funds, or 67 percent, comes from taxes. The 2019 general fund has increased by around $60 million when compared to the estimated 2018 general fund.

Budget items include more than $50 million going toward affordable housing throughout the city, as well as $27 million going toward transportation projects. The city is specifically looking to improve bike and pedestrian infrastructure.

The city is looking to eliminate all late fees from the Denver Public Library system.

Prior to this budget, money from library fees went toward the city’s general fund, not toward library programming, said Erika Martinez, the director of communications and community engagement with the Denver Public Library.

Many cities across the nation are starting to eliminate fees because it prevents people from using the library. Fees are also harmful toward a city’s more vulnerable populations, Martinez said.

In addition to those projects, the city has set aside funds to hire new police officers and firefighters. John White, a sergeant in the media relations unit with the Denver Police Department said that if the budget is approved, they will be hiring brand new officers with no experience, as well as a set of seasoned officers.

DPD will hire four sergeants, three detectives, 18 officers, three corporals. They will then place those officers strategically depending on where they’re needed, White said. Detectives for example may be placed on domestic violence cases, something DPD is working on addressing.

“We’re looking at the best way to deploy them to assist with our ongoing operations,” he said.

Throughout her career in audio production, Catherine Jaffee has come to think of herself as a professional listener. At any given time, she estimated she’s listening to more than 180 different podcasts of a wide variety, soaking in the medium and its versatility in storytelling.

While she started her career by telling the stories of others, Jaffee has now taken a step back to let people speak for themselves.

“I always thought it was really unfair, actually,” she said about tellling other people’s stories. “We have these systems where there’s a storyteller and then there’s someone who’s actually telling the story, and we just start harvesting those things and the rewards don’t really come back to that person.”

The goal of House of Pod is to teach people not only how to produce a podcast, but also how to tell an impactful story. By giving people access to an easy medium like podcasts, as well as access to quality equipment, more minority populations will be able to share

their stories, Jaffee said.

“I saw the need to extend this to other communities that could use this space to level the playing field a little bit more,” she said. “We all need to listen better — and they’re not voiceless.”

Since opening House of Pod, Jaffee has brought in two full-time staff members, who also produce their own podcast shows. People can

buy memberships to House of Pod, which gives them access to studio space for $100 a month for individuals, $500 a month for companies of more than five people. People can also rent space on a drop-in basis for $60 an hour for the first session, and then $1 per minute after that.

Producers have come in from around the country to do onemonth consultations with House of Pod, Jaffee said. Many users come in for a short period of time to produce a show. Jaffee estimated that between 15 and 35 of members are people who come in frequently to produce recurring shows.

“They’re pillars of our community.

We’re rooting for them,” Jaffee said.

“We’re really trying to make sure that their shows take off because it benefits all of us.”

Several podcasts have already come out of the business. Members are producing regular podcasts such as Parental, about Fatherhood; Podcasts in Color, which talks about shows produced by people of color; Singleing, a show about dating; and more.

In addition to production studios, House of Pod offers free beginners classes on creating podcasts. House of Pod helped one student create an oral history of the Five Points neighborhood. For those looking to get a more in-depth grasp of the medium, House of Pod offers more advanced classes for a fee.

House of Pod is also working with schools in Denver, such as Manual High School and Denver School of the Arts, to teach young people how to produce their own podcasts.

Next year, Jaffee said the business will start producing more of its own shows. House of Pod runs two branded shows currently. One is the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on anthropology called Homosapiens.org. The other, Mile High Hustle, is done with the city of Denver.

Those branded shows help to bring in revenue to the business.

While membership and studio fees also generate revenue, Jaffee said it has been an interesting challenge to find a ways to fund House of Pod. Since podcasts are a trendy medium right now, Jaffee said it’s helped to drive up interest in the studio.

“I’m excited to solve that problem and make it sustainable for us,” she said. “There’s a lot of hope on the horizon, but also the hardships are real.”

DPS announces interim superintendent Annual school performance results released; district receives civics grant

Staff Report Dr. Ron Cabrera steps in as interim superintendent Following Tom Boasberg’s departure as superintendent of Denver Public Schools (DPS) on Oct. 19, board members announced that Dr. Ron Cabrera would step into the position while the search continues for a permanent replacement.

Boasberg first announced he would be stepping down from the position in July.

Cabrera recently worked as the interim associate chief of academics and innovation for DPS according to a news release announcing him as the interim. Prior to that he served as a teacher, principal, instructional leader and superintendent in Denver and in school districts across the state.

He was principal of Boulder High School, director of curriculum and instruction in Commerce City, deputy superintendent in Westminster and superintendent in Loveland, to name a few. He retired as assistant superintendent for instructional leadership and equity for the Boulder Valley School District in June 2017.

DPS releases the numbers annually and describes it as a report card for schools - measuring the satisfaction of both students and parents, as well as looking at standardized test scores and how the school serves its students. Board gives green light to flexibility for two schools Zone will be smallest in district’s ongoing innovation move

Two more Denver schools have won more flexibility in how they spend their money and time. The schools will create a new “innovation zone,” bringing the district’s number of quasi-autonomous zones to three.

The Denver school board on Oct. 18 unanimously approved the schools’ application to operate more independently from district rules, starting in January.

The new zone will include Grant Beacon Middle School in south Denver and Kepner Beacon Middle School in southwest Denver. The two schools are high-performing by the district’s standards and follow a model that allows students to learn at their own pace.

With just two schools, the zone will be the district’s smallest, though Beacon lead-

ers have signaled their intent to compete to open a third school in the growing Stapleton neighborhood, where the district has said it will need more capacity. The district’s other two innovation zones have four and five schools each.

Schools in zones are still district schools, but they can opt out of paying for certain district services and instead spend that money on things that meet their specific needs, such as additional teachers or aides.

Zones can also form nonprofit organizations with their own boards of directors that provide academic and operational oversight, and help raise extra dollars to support the schools.

The new zone, called the Beacon Schools Network Innovation Zone, will have a five-member board of directors that will include one current parent, two former parents, and two community members whose professional work is related to education.

The zone will also have a teacher council and a parent council that will provide feedback to its board but whose members won’t be able to vote on decisions.

Some Denver school board members questioned the makeup of the zone’s board.

“I’m wondering about what kinds of steps you’re going to take to ensure there is a greater representation of people who live and reside in southwest Denver,” where Kepner Beacon is located, asked school board member Angela Cobián, who represents the region. She also asked about a greater representation of current parents on the board.

Alex Magaña, who serves as executive principal over the Beacon schools and will lead the new zone, said he expects the board to expand to seven members within a year. He also said the parent council will play a key role even if its members can’t vote.

“The parent council is a strong influence,” he said. “If the parent council is not happy, that’s going to be impacting both of the schools. I don’t want to undersell that.”

Other Denver school board members questioned the zone’s finances and how dependent it would be on fundraising. A district summary of the zone’s application notes that the zone’s budget relies on $1.68 million in foundation revenue over the next 5 1/2 years.

would make it more financially stable. As for philanthropic dollars, he said the zone would work to ensure any loss of revenue doesn’t hurt the schools’ unique programs or enrichment.

“I can’t emphasize enough that it won’t impact the schools,” he said.

Ultimately, Denver school board members said they have confidence in the Beacon model and look forward to seeing what its leaders do with their increased autonomy.

nside a storefront in a corner of a shopping center off Colorado Boulevard, a group of teenage girls sorts through piles of clothes and hangers. They chatter as they work, pointing out national brand names like Vineyard Vines as they go through the donated clothes.

Student Marygrace Adam, who with her peers from St. Mary’s Academy is volunteering this day at Clothes to Kids of Denver, is glad to be helping.

“These clothes are going to people who need it,” she said.

The nonprofit receives donations every day, said Katie Jones Jadwin, executive director of the organization that operates at 2890 S. Colorado Blvd. The sorting room is lined with folded clothes. Bags of recently donated items fill bins by the front door. Clothes to Kids operates a store in the same shopping area where people can make an appointment to get school wardrobes for their kids.

Each child receives five tops, four bottoms, a coat, a pair of shoes, as well as five pairs of underwear and socks, all for free. The socks and underwear are guaranteed to be new, Jones Jadwin said. The store offers clothes to people from 3 to 21 years old, as long as students are enrolled in a school or GED program.

Serving those in need Parents are referred to Clothes to Kids by aid organizations, schools or nonprofits. Children in foster care or children who qualify for free and reduced lunch also qualify for clothes at the nonprofit. Families can get clothes for their children once every six months, Jones Jadwin said.

The nonprofit also offers what Jones Jadwin calls extras — books, games, cleats and play clothes.

While socks and underwear will always be popular items, shoes and coats can be the difference between getting to school or not, Jones Jadwin said.

“If they have any type of walking or bus trip, where they have to wait at the bus stop, we found that coats really lower truancy rates,” she said.

Last year, the nonprofit handed out 9,454 wardrobes. In September, it gave out its 50,000th wardrobe and in July its 1 millionth piece of clothing. Clothes to Kids is hoping to give out close to 10,000 wardrobes this year,

Although the nonprofit allows for people to come in for clothes twice per year, about 80 percent of the families only visit during back-to-school season. During that time, the nonprofit has 100 appointments a day.

Clothes to Kids also helps families experiencing a crisis.

Maria Trujillo was shopping at the store for the first time in early October. She had heard about the program though the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) food program and St. Joseph Catholic Parish in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. Trujillo had recently been diagnosed with cancer, making it all but impossible for her to work, she said. In addition to her two children, she also cares for her sister’s kids.

Being able to find something to help them out was a weight off her chest, she said.

“I don’t want the kids at school bullying them or making fun of them,” Trujillo said.

“It’s a tough situation. I didn’t expect to have cancer, but I do.”

Saying yes to everyone In 2008, Clothes to Kids started in the shop where the sorting area is now housed. The crammed shop had room for one dressing room. At first, the organization only served the city of Denver. But as word spread about Clothes to Kids, people began coming in from all over the state, Jones Jadwin said. Now, the store serves Denver, Boulder, Broomfield, Douglas, Jefferson, Gilpin, Clear Creek, Adams, Arapahoe and Elbert counties.

“A lot of people are willing to make the drive,” Jones Jadwin said. “We really decided to

HELPING TO ENRICH CHILDREN’S LIVES Sharon Walsh has volunteered with Clothes to Kids for the past eight years. Many volunteers have personal stories about how clothing donation impacted their lives, she said. For Walsh, it all started with a third-grade spelling bee when she was a child, and the girl at the back of her class.

Walsh The girl wore hand-medown clothes and shoes from her brother and was quiet when she talked. Although she won the spelling bee, she refused to get up and accept her ribbon. When Walsh talked to her mother about it later, her mother said she was probably embarrassed by her clothes.

From then on, the Walsh family began donating the clothing they outgrew. About 20 years later, Walsh was home for a family visit when she ran into the girl from her class. The girl told Walsh that wearing the clothes the Walsh family had donated had made her feel “like a princess.”

When re-telling that story, Walsh said she often gets teary. The experience brought her to Clothes to Kids, which helps her to better the lives of local children.

Clothes to Kids moved to its current location in 2010. The larger space was larger included a room in the back for sorting donated clothes. In 2014, the nonprofit expanded again by knocking out the back walls and using the whole space for a store. At that time, it also began renting out the original shop space as a sorting area.

Since Clothes to Kids serves some children in foster care, Jones Jadwin said it was important to separate the donation space from the rest of the store. This way, clothing donated in trash bags is kept in the sorting area and away from the shopping side.

“It was kind of triggering for our youth in foster care. If they’ve been removed from home, often their belongings are all thrown in a black garbage bag,” Jones Jadwin said. “When they come here I don’t want them to see a black trash bag during a visit. I want them to see pretty clothes arranged how they like.”

While her children looked at shoes, Trujillo sorted through a rack of clothes in the back of the store. She said she was grateful to Clothes to Kids for helping her get back on her feet.

She plans on bringing in clothing that her own children have outgrown, as a way to give back.

“It’s my turn, you know,” she said. “You get some and you return some.”

Talking about safe sleep for infants First Candle and The Boppy Company offer free workshops for parents, caregivers, infant-care professionals

By Christy Steadman csteadman@coloradocommunitymedia.com It’s not common knowledge for people to know that 3,600 babies die every year because of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) or from a sleep-related infant death, said Alison Jacobson, CEO of First Candle, a national nonprofit dedicated to the education, advocacy and research of SIDS. “No one wants to talk about it,” Jacobson said. “But until we have those conversations, nothing will change. We have to talk about it.”

To help, a partnership between First Candle and The Boppy Company — the Golden-based manufacturer of Boppy infant products — is bringing a special training class to the Denver area for the first time.

The Straight Talk for Infant Safe Sleep classes will provide attendees an opportunity to learn about the Safe Sleep Guidelines developed by The American Academy of Pediatrics.

Two Straight Talk for Infant Safe Sleep classes will be offered in Denver — one for parents and caregivers and another for healthcare professionals. Both classes take place at the mama ‘hood, which is a place for new-and-expecting mothers that offers a variety of classes and a curated retail boutique.

The parent/caregiver class will entail an explanation of the top five of the approximate 18 Safe Sleep Guidelines, and the reasons behind these recommendations.

The class will also include a group conversation to brainstorm what challenges parents face with meeting Safe Sleep Guidelines and how to overcome the challenges. The group

will also share past successes and create a network of support.

This is education and training that’s difficult to find anywhere else, Jacobson said.

And it needs to begin early, she added — even as early as when you start setting up the nursery, or even as soon as you learn you’re pregnant.

The healthcare professionals’ class consists of a thorough overview of the Safe Sleep Guidelines and the reasoning behind each one. This class will also include group discussions, but also role play. Attendees will learn how to create a two-way conversation with parents and gain knowledge on how they can help parents create a plan to implement safe sleep and breastfeeding in each household that considers each family’s beliefs, values and living and working situations.

Organizations across Denver are looking for gift and meal donations this season

s the holiday season comes around this year, Denverites may be looking for a place to give back - whether it’s through volunteering their time or donating money. Organizations throughout the city put together food drives and volunteer efforts to provide thousands of families with meals for the holidays.

At South High School, students file in to a long classroom on a Thursday afternoon.

Jaclyn Yelich greets many of them by name, giving them quick hugs and asking how their families are. Volunteers chat happily with students, trying to get them to take the green tomatoes, potatoes or peppers that the food bank has in supply that week.

Every week at South and West High Schools, kids line up for bags of fresh produce, boxes of pasta and other food goods.

More recently, the food banks also started offering toiletries like shampoo and body wash. Between the two schools, the food banks serve hundreds of children and their

families on a weekly basis, providing meals and snacks.

The holidays can put extra strain on those families, said Yelich, who started the food bank at South four years ago with her husband, Greg Thielen. Both schools have started collecting turkeys and other holiday meal items to give to students.

In addition to meals, last year Yelich was able to provide 60 families with gift cards to grocery stores for food. She also collected gift cards to stores like Target and Walmart so that people could get clothes or gifts for their children. She collected enough that she was able to give $50 gift cards to around 190 children.

“It makes you feel like you can make a real difference in the world,” Yelich said. “To be able to provide food and give them the dignity to shop for their own children, it feels great.”

Since the food bank at South has been around for a while, Yelich said she has a strong group of volunteers. Right now she is focusing more on collecting holiday gift cards for the families.

The West High School food bank started in April. Since the group has just gotten started at the school, Rita Cordova said they are still looking for volunteers to help them drive food, as well as volunteers to set food up and run the food bank. Cordova currently runs the food bank through West’s alumni association. She is hoping to eventually get enough volunteers to make it more of a community program.

“The hardest thing is building up our volunteer base,” said Rita Cordova, who runs the West High food bank.

Both food banks get nonperishable food items from Food for Thought, a nonprofit that partners with Food Bank of the Rockies.

The produce for the food banks comes from We Don’t Waste, a nonprofit that collects unused food items from caterers and grocery stores, and distributes it to different food

banks and other community resource organizations throughout Denver.

Places such as the Denver Rescue Mission are also trying to round up turkeys for Thanksgiving meals. This year, the Denver Rescue Mission is aiming to get 15,000 turkeys for meals for people struggling with homelessness and poverty across the state.

In Five Points, several blocks of Bruce Randolph Avenue near the Epworth United Methodist Church will be shut down on Nov. 17th. Hundreds of volunteers will line up along a make-shift conveyor belt, filling boxes with all the necessities for a full Thanksgiving meal. The Epworth Foundation, which was founded in 2005, has been putting on the event in honor of “Daddy” Bruce Randolph, who started giving Thanksgiving meals to the hungry in Denver back in the `60s. Randolph passed away in 1994 at the age of 94.

Last year, November was proclaimed Colorado Feed-A-Family month by Gov. John Hickenlooper in honor of the foundation’s efforts. The organization gave out 6,580 boxed meals in 2017 to families as far as Colorado Springs. Each box can feed a family of eight. It was also the first year that the foundation added in a job fair with 27 different employers.

Quirky combinations are unique attractions IF YOU GO

The Denver-metro area has it all — diverse entertainment in spectacular venues; vast shopping options from big-box retail to small, family-owned businesses; and a variety of fineand casual-dining establishments.

But some local businesses go above and beyond, either through partnerships or collaborative work with others, to offer people a unique experience all of their own.

Lights Out! and Harley’s: A Hot Dog Revolution, downtown Littleton James Goodchild, 34, has always had an interest in horror-themed movies and tales.

“I’m that kid who was watching Freddy Krueger at 8 years old,” he said. “Halloweens at our house are always the event of the year.”

He took that passion and turned it into a business. He and his wife Pamela opened Lights Out Escape Rooms and Social Lounge in Littleton in April.

“It started out as a Halloween concept at our house,” Goodchild said of the years he would set up a private horror-themed escape room in the garage for local residents and neighbors.

“And it morphed into this. A lot of the props are from our family home.”

Currently, Lights Out! offers four escaperoom challenges — Survivor Challenge, Big Top Horror, Zombie Nursery and Under the Bed. A fifth room, The Observation Room, was scheduled to open mid-October.

Although all are horror-themed, the emphasis is not on jump-scares, Goodchild said.

“This is not a haunted house,” he said. “We want your focus on the puzzles, rather than the scare factor.”

Difficulty level in the individual rooms range from five to eight and each room plays differently. For example, Zombie Nursery focuses on completing tasks and Survivor Challenge is a scavenger hunt escape.

The social lounge, called The Sanctuary, is open to the public. Although it is a place to gather before or after doing an escape room, there is no requirement to do an escape room to visit the social lounge. The Sanctuary offers entertainment such as chess and board games — “Game of Thrones” and “The Walking Dead” Risk games, for example — in addition to free horror movie nights each Wednesday.

Adult beverages are available for purchase.

For food, Goodchild partners with Romano’s Italian Restaurant and Dickey’s Barbecue Pit for large-order catering, and neighboring business Harley’s: A Hot Dog Revolution for

The escape rooms at Lights Out!, a new business, are a blast. It’s a good partnership, Ginsburg added.

“They provide a lot of fun,” he said, “and we provide the good food.”

Lube & Latte, Lakewood/Wheat Ridge It can be unpleasant sitting, waiting for your car to be serviced with a stale or instant coffee in hand, flavored only with powdered creamer.

“We’re creating a comfortable, clean environment,” said Lube & Latte owner Dustin Olde. “It makes the time go faster if you have something delicious to drink or snack on while you’re waiting.”

Lube & Latte opened in 2007. Olde partners with Novo Coffee, a family-owned and -operated business in Denver, for the coffee it serves and Sugar Bakeshop, also a small Denver business, for the pastry selection.

The auto mechanics are ASE-certified and can work on all vehicle makes and models. Auto services include everything from scheduled maintenance, unexpected repairs, diagnostics and lube and oil changes.

The venue is small, but offers a clean restroom, free wifi, couch seating and a hi-top bar area for those who would like to bring a laptop computer to continue their workday while their car is being serviced. In addition, the décor is not what you would normally find

at a mechanic shop, Olde said — there are no windshield wiper displays or poster-sized tire ads.

“All that helps make it more welcoming,” he added.

Providing coffee at an auto repair shop is not a new concept, Olde said.

But “at many shops, you’re served a product you can get anywhere,” Olde said. “Novo Coffee and Sugar Bakeshop pastries are unique and better quality.”

It’s good to be able to partner with other small, local businesses where you can work directly with the owner, he added.

“They are as committed to your success as you are to theirs,” Olde said.

Olde worked in a lot of coffee shops after college, he said, and he always enjoyed the aromas of fresh coffee and the friendly, relaxed environment.

“To me, it was just a natural update to the

standard auto repair shop,” Olde said. “People are friendlier over a cup of coffee.”

Game Train, Highlands Ranch When Jo Ellen Christian of Centennial was a young girl, she would travel with her grandmother by train. During the trip, her grandmother would always ask the other passengers to play games, usually card games, with them.

And more often than not, they did, Christian said.

“It was a lot of fun,” she said. “We got to get to know people from all over the country.”

Today, she and her husband Kevin have taken that nostalgia and will be opening Game Train in December. Dubbed “a boardgame getaway” by the Christians, the venue will be a restaurant, simulated train and boardgame establishment.

“Our goal is to be a social place where people can have fun and interact face-to-face,” Christian said. “I enjoy being around people and watching them have fun.”

The establishment is currently under construction. The end result will offer patrons unlimited play of hundreds of boardgames for a $5 library fee and train simulators that will provide the rumble and sounds of riding in a real train car.

Décor will resemble a Victorian train station and seating will be strategically placed so people can enjoy private game play with their group.

Those who do not wish to play games are welcome to visit for dining only, Christian said.

“We have a great chef who inspired our menu,” she added.

The Christians are working with Erie’s Chef Robert Corey, a renowned chef who has taught at The Art Institute of Colorado and at Johnson & Wales University. In his career, he has led or been on the opening team for about 25 restaurants across the U.S. and in Mexico. In Colorado, Corey has cooked for guests of the RedRum Mystery Dinner at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, in addition to opening his own restaurant, Seasoned - An American Bistro, in June last year.

Game Train is fashioned after the “bygone times of parlor games, inventions and travel,” its website states, bringing “to life the mythical story of Artemis (aka Art) Stemm- inventor of the clean Steam engine.”

It will take you back to a simpler time, Christian said.

“We want to be a destination where people can relax and feel like they’re getting away from their everyday routine,” she said.

Endangered Asian elephants join bachelor herd Denver Zoo is now the leading all-male Asian elephant institution in North America Staff report With the recent arrival of two new residents, the Denver Zoo is now home to the largest bachelor herd of Asian elephants in North America, according to a news release from the zoo.

Denver Zoo plays a critical role in the longterm viability of endangered Asian elephants.

It houses only males, whose genetics are valuable to the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, and is one of the few institutions in the world dedicated exclusively to the care of male elephants, according to a news release from the Denver Zoo. Jake, age 8, and Chuck, age 10, arrived at the zoo in late September from African Lion Safari in Ontario, Canada, and join the zoo’s Asian elephant inhabitants Groucho, Bodhi and Billy. Their new home at the Toyota Elephant Passage is one of the largest and most complex elephant exhibits in North America. It features two miles of interconnected trails, more than 1.2 million gallons of water for swimming and bathing, six outdoor yards and nine indoor areas, and various other features that ensure their physical, mental and behavioral wellbeing, the release said.

Denver Zoo participates in the Asian Elephant SSP, which works to maximize diversity, appropriately manage the demographic distribution and long-term sustainability of Asian elephants within AZA accredited institutions.

Additionally, the Zoo collaborates with the AZA and International Elephant Foundation to support research and global conservation efforts.

“Denver Zoo has made tremendous contributions towards the conservation and research of Asian elephants within zoos and in the wild,” Deborah Olson, executive director of the International Elephant Foundation, which supports conservation, awareness, scientific programs, and community-based strategies that encourage the peaceful co-existence between humans and elephants, said in the release. “As a board member of the International Elephant Foundation, Denver Zoo helps us achieve our mission to enhance the survival of elephants and protect their habitats worldwide, thereby creating a sustainable future for elephants.”

Jake and Chuck are being kept behind the scenes in Toyota Elephant Passage. They will make their public debut this fall once they are comfortable in their new home and following a quarantine period of at least 30 days.

Primate habitat is where it’s at Zookeeper shares insights from her work with great apes

Michelle Valois says a typical day at the Denver Zoo is a lot of fun and a lot of work.

Valois, a primate zookeeper, has been at the Denver Zoo for 17 years. Her job is to take care of the orangutans and gorillas in their separate exhibits in the Primate Panorama habitat.

The Denver Zoo is home to six critically endangered Sumatran orangutans and five western lowland gorillas. But the zoo is home to many more primates including golden lion tamarins, aye-ayes, ring-tailed lemurs and mandrills.

“In our primate department we have a really big collection,” Valois said. “I think it’s something we are really proud of and excited to have that many different kinds of primates to work with.”

Valois fell in love with primates while working as an intern at the Denver Zoo and helping with the revamp of the primates department and the construction of the ape building.

“For me it was always kids or animals, which I feel like have a lot of similarities,” Valois said.

“When I got introduced to primates, I knew I had found where I needed to be. And I’ve

The interaction the zookeepers have with the apes is one of the draws for Valois.

“I love the different personalities they present,” she said. “I love getting to know those different personalities. And they’re not all easy to get along with. Part of what I take very seriously is how I can help each of these species.

How I can make the best possible life for them in zoo life.”

Valois said paying attention to the quirks of each animal is very important to their care.

Specifically how the gorillas don’t like to get their hair wet. Or how the bachelor pair of young gorillas, Curtis and Charlie, are complete opposite personalities.

Curtis, the older bother, is pretty mellow and likes quieter interaction, she explained, while Charlie is a bit of a wild guy.

“It’s neat to see these two gorillas who are full brothers and grown up together to have totally different personalities,” Valois said.

“When I come around the corner, Charlie is often waiting for me to play.

“He likes to throw hay and beat on his chest and have his back scratched.”

While the gorillas are high-energy, social animals. Valois said the orangutans, who live on the other side of the building, are more solitary animals and prefer a low-key environment with the exception of Eirina, an 11-yearold female, who is incredibly playful.

“She loves to swing,” Valois said. “She takes sheets and make hammocks for herself. She ties knots. She has what we interpret as a great sense of humor.”

Both the gorillas and orangutans have indoor/outdoor enclosures and a living space out of the public eye. This, Valois said, is important because while the apes acclimate to the colder Colorado weather, they’re not really made to be in the snow. Still, the big yards where the apes play outdoors are a point of pride for Valois and her team.

A new climbing structure was recently built in the orangutans’ outdoor enclosure to replace trees that are dying.

“We’re really lucky at Denver to have these yards with natural trees and opportunities for the animals to climb, especially for orangutans,” Valois said. “These guys are made to be in trees. In a natural environment they would not come to the ground, not like ours do here.

So having options like trees or like our new climbing structure is important to give them new ways to climb, to find food, places to take naps … Though a generous donation we were able to put up the new structure. The keepers and the orangutans really like it.”

Interstate 70 closures could affect holiday travel to DIA Staff Report Construction for the Central 70 project will continue through November with several closures. With holiday traveling on the horizon, here are some of this month’s construction activities on the project. There will be closures on both Interstate 70, as well as local streets: • The work on Brighton Boulevard was completed at the end of last month and the roadway between 44th Avenue and the I-70 ramps will reopen.

• The York Street on-ramp to westbound I-70 closed permanently last month. Motorists can access westbound I-70 from Steele/Vasquez.

• Lanes on I-70 between Quebec Street and Interstate 225 will shift.

Overnight lane closures will be in place to accommodate this work.

• The Interstate 270 fly-over bridge construction will begin.

• Nighttime crews will be on Peoria Street and I-70 interchange for bridge construction.

• Construction on Colorado Boulevard and I-70 interchange will

build temporary pavement for future traffic shift.

• 46th Avenue will become one lane in each direction in the existing westbound lanes between York Street and Colorado Boulevard for utility work.

• The Union Pacific Railroad will be performing work on the railroad tracks at York Street and 47th Avenue from Nov. 1-7, requiring the intersection to be closed.

• Grading activities will happen south of Swansea Elementary School.

Nighttime general construction

activities will occur at the following locations: • I-70 between Quebec Street and I-225 interchange • Peoria Street and I-70 interchange • Local Road, north of I-70, between Williams Street and Claude Court •York Street between 45th and 47th avenues • South of Swansea Elementary Construction activities will be happening day and night. City law requires that activities occurring

overnight be within the noise variance limits of 75 decibel hourly average with an allowable spike up to 86 decibels. To make a complaint about construction noise during the night, call the 24-hour hotline at 833-C70INFO (270-4636). Residents may also call the city at 311.

Teen video contest encourages value of saving money Staff report Sunflower Bank is accepting submissions for its Lights, Camera, Save! video contest, which enourages teens to use video to communicate the value of saving money and inspire peers to become livelong savers.

“Lights, Camera, Save!” gives students an opportunity to harness their creativity, learn about using money wisely and communicate those lessons in a fun and engaging way,” Mollie

Students ages 13-18 must create a video, 90 seconds or less, on saving and using money wisely. A link to the video, along with a completed entry form, must be submitted by Dec. 3.

The bank will host the first round of judging and select a winner, who will compete in the national contest for a prize up to $5,000, plus a scholarship for a teacher at the winner’s school to attend the annual Jump$tart National Educator Conference.

Videos will be judged on quality, message, content and the criteria set forth by the contest’s official rules.

“We saw other kids selling their products and thought it was cool,” Lauren said. “We started brainstorming business ideas after that.”

Richard Martinez, CEO of Young Americans, believes kids have historically been driven to be their own bosses.

The same holds true today, when 55 percent of children in the fifth through eighth grades say they plan on starting a business, according to a Gallup poll.

“You go back to those simple lemonade stands and delivering newspapers,” Martinez said, “but I think the tech industry has really changed the entrance point for young people to start businesses.”

His goal is to help kids take advantage of these opportunities by fostering what he calls “extreme entrepreneurs”

Yaunie Williams, 11, who lives in Denver, was inspired to start skincare line Yaunie’s Scrub Sensation after discovering the YouthBiz Marketplace two years ago. After deciding to become an entrepreneur, she looked to her family for help.

“My mom and dad were my employees and investors,” she said. “My

dad was my inspiration because he was also selling body scrubs, and other family members helped me with marketing.”

Likewise, Nagel’s parents help him with his finances. They have supported him since he told them he wanted to go into business, “but at the same, they were like `Oh, no, this is going to be a lot of work.’ ” Meanwhile, Nagel and

his fellow entrepreneurs have learned to juggle school, extracurricular activities and their businesses.

“It is extremely difficult to balance business with school,” Claire said.

“It has gotten harder as we’ve gotten older because we are busy with other activities. But we still like having our business, because it gives us an opportunity to be creative.”

Branching out and talking to customers can also be a challenge, Yaunie said. For her, overcoming these challenges has been a rewarding part of the journey.

“I was very shy when I first started, and now my social skills have improved tremendously,” she said. “To all the young people: This will give you control of your future. You just have to believe in yourself.”
