DEVELOPMENTS South Cherry Street CREA-Flywheel Evans LandCo LLC has scooped up several properties along South Cherry Street in University Hills, according to county records. No plans for the buildings have been submitted to the city yet. The purchase totaled more than $13 million.

The organization purchased buildings at 2100, 2135, 2150 and 2175 S. Cherry St. It also bought nearby 2160 S. Clermont St. Several of the buildings currently have office tenants. The building at 2150 S. Cherry St. is home to The Worship Center and the Clermont Street property is currently a language school.

Observatory Row Construction has started on a new townhome development in the Observatory Park neighborhood. Observatory Row will include 20 units across five buildings at 4100 S. Iliff Ave. The units will have three bedrooms. They range from about 1,700 square feet to nearly 1,900 square feet.

According to a news release, Mile Hi Modern, the developer on the project, estimates construction will be completed in the summer of 2019.

Aviano Coffee A Cherry Creek coffee shop is expanding into a second location a few blocks away from its current spot. Aviano Coffee has one shop at 244 Detroit St. and plans to open a second this month at 215 St. Paul St. Aviano has been in Cherry Creek since 2010. It originally opened in the Golden Triangle area in the Beauvilon building on Lincoln Street in 2006.

The Waffle Place The Waffle Place, at 1384 S. Broadway, held its grand opening over the weekend of Sept.

7. The restaurant is a Belgian-inspired eatery open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It offers both savory and sweet waffle sandwiches as well as a waffle dog.

ChoLon Restaurant Concepts Cho 77, which is located in the Baker neighborhood at 42 S. Broadway, will be closing on Sept. 27 and moving into a space neighboring its sister restaurant ChoLon on the 16th Street Mall in the SugarCube building. A staff member at Cho 77 said the restaurant would reopen there in December or January.

The group is also working on opening a European-inspired restaurant, LaRoux, in the same building.

The ChoLon Restaurant Concept company will be opening a new concept in the former Cho 77 space, BorraCho Tacos. Before opening in Baker, the taco restaurant operated as a food stall in Avanti Food and Beverage in the Highlands.

Rise & Shine The Sloan’s Lake biscuit company expanded to a second location in August, opening at 76 S. Pennsylvania St. The company first opened in 2010, and rotates its biscuit of the day. A biscuit-of-the-day list can be found on the homepage of the restaurant’s website.

The restaurant offers biscuit breakfast sandwiches as well as a cinnamon roll biscuit. The Sloan’s Lake location is open for dinner. The Pennsylvania Street location closes at 2 p.m.

The restaurant took over the former Europa Coffee House space, which closed at the end of June.

Wish Gifts has been on University for the last four years. In October, the store will expand to a second shop in Englewood.

Wish Gifts Wish Gifts, a boutique shop at 750 S. University Blvd., is expanding and opening a second shop at the Happy Canyon Shopping Center in Englewood. The shop is set to open this month, according to the Wish Gifts website.

Haley Volhein, a manager at Wish, said they have always wanted to open a second location.

Wish first opened in the Old South Gaylord Street area. Four years ago, it moved to University Boulevard because the location was larger, Volhein said.

“It was a really great move for us,” she said.

“It’s really growing.”

The second shop at Happy Canyon is slightly bigger than the space in Bonnie Brae.

Volhein said the gifts will be organized into themes, similar to the setup at the University location.

Campus Lounge New owners plan to reopen Campus Lounge, a former sports bar at 701 S. University Blvd.

The Bonnie Brae staple has had its up and downs as of late. Former owner Jim Wiste, who retired after more than 40 years of running the sports bar, sold it in 2016 to Dan Landes, a restauranteur known for the vegetarian spots, Water Course in Uptown and City O’ City in Capitol Hill.

Landes reopened Campus Lounge in October 2017 after an extensive remodel. Wiste, a former University of Denver Hockey player, passed away in January, shortly after Campus Lounge reopened.

He tried to change the classic spot too much, Landes later said. Landes removed the TVs out the bar, which had previously made its name as a DU hockey hotspot. The Campus Lounge reboot closed at the end of March after less than a year.

But once again, a new group is stepping up to the plate.

Father-and-son duo Dan and Jeff Nickless are reopening Campus Lounge, complete once again with TVs and the sports-bar feel. The pair are hoping to reopen the bar and restaurant this month. The Nickless family formerly owned Esquire Market on University Boulevard in Bonnie Brae. The market operated for more than 50 years and has since closed. The market used to sell meat to Campus Lounge.

Remixed gifts celebrated one year on South Broadway in September. The store is a boutique influenced by music from The Cure, Nirvana and David Bowie.

KAILYN LAMB Remixed Gifts Remixed Gifts, a music-themed gift store on South Broadway, celebrated its one-year anniversary last month. The store is located at 70 S. Broadway.

Macy’s Macy’s moved its furniture gallery into a larger space within the Cherry Creek Shopping Center in August. The furniture gallery space was previously located in a building west of the mall. The new gallery opened in a space adjacent to its clothing department store in the Cherry Creek Shopping Center.

The company announced in August 2016 that it would be closing 100 stores across the nation. As of yet, none of Macy’s 10 Colorado locations has been selected.

The North Face The North Face will be leaving its space in Cherry Creek North at 100 Detroit St. in November. The store, which sells outdoor wear will be moving into a lower-level space near Nordstrom’s inside the Cherry Creek Shopping Center. The move was first reported by BusinessDen.

Finding inner strength Platt Park martial arts school teaches women to defend themselves

Imagine you’re driving a car. You go to make a turn and suddenly another car is there. Quickly, you slam on the brakes preventing a collision.

For Vanessa Spindle, a teacher at Wash Park Martial Arts in Platt Park, learning selfdefense is a lot like driving a car. Awareness of your surroundings can go a long way in preventing a potential incident. Even without any physical skills, Spindle said women can use a combination of instinct, direct eye contact and awareness of surroundings to recognize a potential threat.

“Being aware of your surroundings in and of itself is one of the biggest things you can do,” she said. “In that moment of ‘can it be prevented’, it doesn’t matter whose fault it is.

It’s ‘can it be prevented?’ ” Spindle, who has practiced martial arts for 25 years, has been running seminars and other classes specifically on women’s selfdefense for the past three years at Wash Park Martial Arts, 1073 S. Pearl St. But after a woman was attacked in July on the Platte River Trail in Littleton — she managed to escape her attacker — the studio decided to take action and is offering women two months of free classes. They must attend their first class by the end of

One of the difficult things about teaching self-defense is getting people to stay in classes long-term, Spindle said.

“What I noticed was that women were going to one class, and it was concerning to me because I didn’t want people coming to an hour-long class and then thinking `Oh I’m good now,’ ” she said. “In some ways I felt I was almost doing a disservice.”

For Spindle, offering the martial arts classes is about more than teaching women a practical skill — it’s also about empowering them to find their own strength.

Over the years of both teaching and taking martial arts classes, Spindle said she has noticed that younger classes are full of girls. But fewer women are taking martial arts classes as they get older. Many of the adult classes she teaches are composed primarily of men, with one or two women here and there.

Women in adult classes tend to follow a pattern, she said.

In the beginning some are timid and

apologetic, worried they might hurt someone. As the class goes on, women begin to realize their own strength and to understand they can use martial arts as a way to potentially overpower someone who outweighs them. This moment is one of Spindle’s favorite parts about teaching women.

“At some point, about halfway through class usually, this little switch will flip,” she said. “Suddenly, she’s having the time of her life. It’s like this little beast within usually wakes up.”

A key piece to staying safe, though, is trusting your instinct, Spindle said.

If a woman notices someone that causes her to feel uncomfortable, it’s important to trust that instinct, Spindle said. Many women try to diffuse the situation by ignoring the person or trying to blend into crowds. Instead, Spindle said women should do little things to build confidence — such as maintaining eye contact — and make themselves look like less of a target.

“Really,” she said, “we want to do the opposite and let them know `I see you. You’re not going to sneak up on me, I’m not afraid’ — even if you kind of are.”

A look back on four decades of serving the south Denver community

hen I first started as editor of the Washington Park Profile in May, I knew it was a privilege to work at a paper with a legacy dating back 40 years. Going through our archives and looking at yellowed pages of decade-old issues shows not only a history of south Denver, but a history of journalism.

Jerry Healey and Ann Macari Healey, owners of Colorado Community Media (CCM), took over the Profile in May. Our first issue came out in July. As a company, CCM strives to be the local voice of the communities it covers. And that means continuing the tradition and mission of hyper-local news In south Denver.

“At CCM, it’s never strictly about dollars and cents, but rather connecting people and businesses in a way that no other medium can,” publisher Jerry Healey said. “That’s what the Profile has done so successfully since its inception, and it’s a legacy we will continue to carry on — binding our communities through storytelling of its people, places and issues.”

The beginning The first issue of the Profile published in October 1978 with Deborah Brown, now Deborah Wiig, at the helm as owner and publisher. The pages had large typewriter-style font and all advertisements were hand-drawn. To top it off, the Profile was in black and white.

That October, the paper covered the first South Pearl Street Festival and an infestation of brown rats in Washington Park.

Over the months, the paper included columns on health and gardening. The December issue featured a list of businesses to encourage readers to shop local for the holidays.

A photo of geese first appeared behind the logo in February 1979. The bird that inhabits Wash Park is still a part of our logo today. The cover stories for the first three months of 1979 were about snow, a local doctor and the revitalization of Broadway.

Strengthening ties to the community Though communities grow and change, the places in the city that tie us together remain. Nearly 40 years after staff wrote about the revitalization of Broadway, the Profile is featuring it again in this issue.

This time around we cover how a highdemand retail market is impacting rent.

member in south Denver, which covers several neighborhoods going east from Washington Park, as well as Rosedale on the west side. Through nearly 40 years at the paper, Kashmann would also write stories and take photos and become its publisher and owner.

But he recalls the first few months were so rough he almost left the paper.

“I remember I made $17 my first month in commission,” he said.

Wiig persuaded him to stay on, tying Kashmann to what would become his career, spending most of his time as publisher, a position he assumed in 1983 when he bought the paper. Although he had written for his college paper, Kashmann said he was not trained as a journalist and neither were other staff members at the Profile.

By the Profile’s 10th birthday in 1988, the paper had added some color and began to have a layout similar to the modern newspapers of today.

“I think the Profile grew to be a really excellent paper,” Kashmann said.

By then, the Profile had added a team of writers, some of whom continue to write for the paper today such as columnist Diana Helper. Susan Dugan wrote profiles on south Denver residents. Denver historian Phil Goodstein wrote for the Profile for a while as well. The layout, and growth of the paper, was thanks to Tim Berland, who worked as a graphic artist for 20 years, Kashmann said.

Bringing in Eileen Abbattista as editor in 1995 helped strengthen the newspaper’s ties to the community it covered, Kashman said.

“She really informed the social conscience of the paper,” he said.

‘It’s so informative’ Ronnie Crawford, an Overland Park resident, first met Kashmann when he

was working in advertising at the paper.

Crawford owned a vintage store on South Broadway called Rudely Decadent He took out a 2-inch by 3-inch ad for his store, requesting a large variety of vintage items.

“Neighborhood newspapers were just such a boon,” he said. “It was a great resource to find old stuff that I could resell.”

In addition to finding things for his store, Crawford said he met a lot of interesting people through his advertisment.

At the time, Crawford lived at East First Avenue and Pearl Street, and the Profile covered a smaller area around the park.

He could also only find copies of the paper in that area.

“I love it ‘cause I can find it in more and more places now,” he said.

Learning more about the community drove Kashmann at the Profile during his tenure there. During that time, the classified section could run up to three pages, Kashmann said. But the internet brought in competition and made it more difficult to continue getting that kind of revenue.

On the editorial side, the large south Denver community means there’s never a shortage of news to cover, Kashmann said. The monthly format also allowed Kashmann to do more research on pieces, giving readers a broader picture.

“The people who read the community papers value that style of journalism,” he said.

Kashmann continued to run the paper until 2015 when he was elected to the Denver City Council and he sold it to Jill and Jay Farschman. His decades at the Profile helped to give him a “to-the-bone” understanding of the community and what made it tick.

Crawford, too, says he learns a lot about the community by reading the Profile.

“It’s so informative,” he said. “I’m glad it’s here.”

But some things don’t change, Wiig said, adding that after 40 years people still care about comunity news. “It proves that it’s the neighborhood it has always been. This is a neighborhood people care about. That hasn’t changed.”

The mansion’s caretaker A school director keeps watch over a 125-year-old building near DU

In 1893, Elizabeth Iliff Warren and her second husband, Bishop Henry White Warren, built an 18,000-square-foot mansion in the heart of what is now the University neighborhood.

Elizabeth was formerly the widow of a prominent land owner and cattle baron in Colorado, John Wesley Iliff. He died in 1876. Many of the streets and buildings in the area bear the name of these founders of the south Denver area.

Jane Queen, director of Accelerated Schools at 2160 S. Cook St., which now calls the mansion home, said the building is a “gem” in the community. The home is often called the Iliff Mansion, but is also known as Fitzroy Place, Queen said.

On Saturday, Sept. 22, the school held a carnival and fundraising event for the 125th birthday of the mansion, which the city designated as a historical xxx in 2007.

For the past 40 years, the school in the mansion has become Queen’s life, but in many ways so has the mansion itself: Queen is the keeper of the school, but also the keeper of the mansion’s history.

“The bottom line is Fitzroy is a historic landmark and, because of that, we’re stewards of the building,” Queen said. “We try

to do the right thing and make the building available to the community.”

Queen offers tours of the building so that visitors can enjoy the historic place.

The building has a unique history. It was completed in 1893 with a great deal of extravagence. After John died, Elizabeth was worth an estimated $10 million, Queen said. The building still has an old bank safe in it, which Queen says probably weighs? about 3 tons.

“Nothing was left undone in the building of this mansion,” Queen said.

The mansion caught fire in 1910, and it took several years to return it to its original state. Elizabeth lived there until her death in 1920, and her daughter from her first marriage, Louise Iliff, lived there until her death in 1966.

Louise donated the house and its surrounding property, which totaled 4.3 acres and included both the carriage and caretaker houses, to the University of Denver.

The university in turn sold it to the owner of the Randall Moore School, which moved the facility there in 1974.

The school changed owners again in 1983, changing its name to Accelerated Schools, a xxxxwhat kind of school is it?. Queen began teaching at the school in 1979. She became the director of the school in 2009.

“It’s been my life to be here at this school, and the school was important,” Queen said.

“But it was also important to me for us to be stewards of this property. For this building not to be preserved would be almost criminal as far as I’m concerned.”

Elizabeth Iliff Warren built her mansion at 2160 S. Cook St. She was the widow of John Wesley Iliff. She and her second husband, Henry White Warren, helped to found the Iliff School of Theology near the University of Denver.

Changing the world through community Local artist uses murals as teaching tool for children

During the 1990s, low funds forced schools across Colorado to cut budgets — art and music classes were among the first to go. And Washington Park resident and local artist Tommy Nahulu began to worry about what students were missing out on when their creative outlets were taken away.

In 1994 he decided he wanted to find his own way to fight back against those cuts. So Nahulu went to Place Bridge Academy in Denver’s Indian Creek neighborhood and gave each student in the project a 9-by-12inch canvas. He asked them to paint a scene of what they thought represented their school mascot, a roadrunner.

Nahulu then took the individual canvasses and created a mosaic-style mural around a roadrunner that he painted.

“Art seemed to be the one thing that connected kids to what was inside of them,” Nahulu said. “I felt they were losing more than an art class.”

After growing up and painting in Denver for several years, Nahulu now travels between Maui and Denver, spending time painting with children in both locations. In Hawaii, where he was born and lived as a child, he works with the Maui Boys and Girls Club.

In Denver, he continues to work with local schools.

He hopes that by teaching kids about art, he can teach them about the importance of creativity.

Drawing inspiration When working with schools, Nahulu approaches local businesses to raise money for art supplies. That way the school can keep money for its own supplies for students.

In Hawaii, Nahulu is hoping to be a mentor to other Hawaiian-born artists. As a child, Nahulu loved the works of Herb Kāne, an illustrator for “National Geographic” and mural artist that depicted Polynesian life and culture. Later in life when he met his idol, Nahulu said it “was like looking at Santa Claus.”

He hopes to inspire other artists the same way Kāne inspired him.

For Nahulu, moving to the mainland of the United States as a child was a little bit of a culture shock at first. After spending some time in Washington, D.C., Nahulu joined his family in Denver at 13, where they lived in the ashram of the Divine Light Mission, a religious movement that started in India.

Denver was the U.S. headquarters for Divine Light, which closed in 1979 after the movement changed course.

Adjusting to schools and no longer living the island life took some getting used to, Nahulu said, but there were also new things to experience.

“To me, snow was like a fantasy,” he said.

“It was magical. Honest to goodness, when it snows today I still get that rush of how cool it is.”

Spoon reastaurant. Both buildings are on Colfax Avenue. He also continues to work with schools. At Mark Twain Elementary School in Littleton, he helped children create a mural of its writer namesake for the library.

In his public murals and projects with local schools, Nahulu said he enjoys meeting new members of the community. The large scaffolding he uses to paint public murals often brings out members of the neighborhood who talk to Nahulu about his work.

Sharing art is a gift, he said.

The first mural Nahulu was paid for was a painting that featured staff members and the owners inside Rick’s Cafe, a bar and grill in Cherry Creek where he used to work. The restaurant was like family, Nahulu said, and the mural dipicted the staff doing some of their favorite activities -- skiing, white water rafting, even hang gliding. The painting was removed during some renovations.The location closed and is now Chopper’s Sports Grill. Nahulu did a charicature of Chopper Travaligni, an athletic trainer for the Denver Nuggets, whom the restuarant is named for.

But being paid for his work is not the only measure of success that Nahulu believes in.

Working with children to teach them how to express themselves makes the job satisfying, he said.

“Success can be measured in so many ways,” he said. “I like the idea and the concept of changing your world through your community.”

A culinary exploration of Denver’s history How the gold rush helped shape the city’s restaurant scene

Not everyone can say they achieved a dream they had while in high school.

But local wine expert and blogger Simone FM Spinner did just that with the publication of her first book, “Denver Food: A Culinary Evolution.”

“Becoming a published book author has been a goal since I was 15 years old — and I finally did it,” she said. “I love food, cooking and dining out. Working in the wine industry, I have always been lucky to dine out frequently as a part of my work, often in the latest, hottest, most interesting restaurants in

the city.”

In her book, Simone explores how German, Japanese, Chinese and Italian immigrants made their way to Colorado as part of the gold rush.

Soon they were opening up saloons, which later turned into a booming restaurant industry.

However, all the recent growth in metro area is causing some of the city’s most unique and historic locations to shut down — a trend that partly inspired Simone to start writing.

“My book is essentially a love letter to the city that I fell in love with, which doesn’t really exist anymore,” she explained. “Yet, it is also a glimpse of the future and of the amazing things that are happening right now in Denver.”

There’s a lot to know about the culinary scene in Denver, and Simone hopes readers come away understanding there’s a lot of collaboration and community

between chefs.

She also wants readers to know the Denver culinary community is actively doing its part to stave off waste, food insecurity and hunger — in their restaurants and communities.

Most importantly, Simone wants readers to understand how many great tastes and flavors there are to explore right at their fingertips.

“Denver has long been ignored by food writers, influencers and critics.

People assume that Denver is just about steaks, Mexican food and novelty food,” she said. “Denver’s culinary scene is a bit of a sleeper. There is so much truly great food in this city and people should get out and explore a little bit. I really appreciate the immense culinary diversity in Denver.”

DU to exhibit works from Madden Collection Staff Report

The school has partnered with the museum for a special three-session course that will highlight pieces of Madden’s 135-artwork collection, according to a DU news release.

The exhibit features 19th and early 20th century paintings. The course is being taught by Dan Jacobs, an art consultant and

former director of the Myhren Gallery at the university.

With the new pieces from the Madden collection, DU’s art exhibits now include more than 3,400 pieces.

DU receives $14 million gift The donation will establish public policy programming at the school Staff Report Doug and Mary Scrivner have pledged $14 million to the University of Denver to establish the Scrivner Institute of Public Policy, a news release from the school reported.

The donation will support the current public policy program by funding an endowed chair, scholarships, professorships and fellowships and programming.

In addition to the $14 million donation, the Scrivners have pledged an additional $1 million toward programming that supports the university’s mission.

Doug Scrivner graduated from DU’s law school in 1977. He and Mary reside in Los Altos Hills, California, and have been longtime supporters of the school, the news release said.

“The University of Denver has long been an important part of Mary’s and my life, from meeting and marrying here to serving on the Board of Trustees and in numerous other ways,” Doug said. “We are thrilled to emphasize our legacy here at DU through the Scrivner Institute, knowing that the knowledge created here, combined with an exceptional student experience, will impact our world in countless ways for the years to come.”

Rising rents on South Broadway causing turnover in businesses

he White Palace building at South Broadway and East Bayaud Avenue sits vacant. Graffiti lines the windows of one space, while the windows of the other space are covered as renovations for a new, incoming business are set to start.

In a matter of months, the three businesses that lived in the White Palace building shuttered their doors for good — first Socorro’s Street Tacos and Bayaud Barber Shop in July, then Famous Pizza at the end of August.

The cause, Socorro’s owner, Joyce Schaeffer, said: rising rent.

“All three of us are gone because of the rent increase on the building,” said Schaeffer, who closed her restaurant at 19 E. Bayaud Ave. Her son owned the barbershop next door.

Rent is trending upward on Broadway as developments and new building owners come into the area. Building renovations cause the new owners to tick up the price, real estate agents say, and some local businesses can’t keep up, creating empty spaces like those in the White Palace building. Increasing property taxes from the city are also a factor. Still, the vacancies don’t last long in Denver’s strong business market.

Changing landscape pushes out oldtimers When Schaeffer first opened Socorro’s in 2009, the building was owned by a woman who’d had it since the 1970s, Schaeffer said. A new manager took over and eventually bought the building.

The $2.8 million deal closed in April, according to city records. The new owner is Bayaud Investors, whose registered

Famous Pizza had been operating at 98 S. Broadway for more than 40 years. The restaurant closed at the end of August and hung a sign in the window thanking people for their business. agent is Derek Vanderryst, according to Colorado Secretary of State records.

Although Schaeffer said the new owner did work with her on rent prices, the increase was still too much. The 525-square-foot space did not have a full kitchen and she could not afford $40 to $45 per square foot — nearly five times what she had been paying, she said.

“I just was not going to pay that kind of rent,” she said. “It’s tough for little small businesses.”

Vanderryst said that when he took over the building management in 2016, Schaeffer was on a month-to-month lease and was paying $400. The payment didn’t cover insurance or the rising property taxes from the city, Vanderryst said.

“At $400,” he said, “the ownership was losing money to have her rent.”

Vanderryst said he did not raise any of the tenants rents when he assumed management. Instead, he worked with Famous Pizza and Schaeffer to keep them in the building for a short time.

But taxes, as well as the cost to bring the building up to fire code and into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, meant he had to bring the rents closer to market value.

In addition to renovations, there’s on-going maintanence costs, Vanderryst said. At the White Palace building, Vanderryst updated lighting for safety.

The building also gets tagged with graffitti three to four times a week, which he cleans up himself.

“To do all those things has a cost associated with it.That’s been the big killer as to why rents have gone up,” he said. “People think it’s the greed of the developers that’s leading to people not being able to stay in their spaces. It’s the cost of business in Denver.”

Michael Kendall, vice president with the Colorado branch of the CBRE, a national real estate firm that also does research on the state of the market, said he has seen this pattern with many of the older buildings on South Broadway.

Long-term owners often have paid off loans and can afford to keep rent prices low. When new buyers comes in, they frequently make renovations to older buildings. This, and the cost of the building itself, drives prices up.

“They can’t afford to keep it at historic low rents,” Kendall said.

Prices on Broadway have generally been trending up over the past several years, said Kendall, adding that the real estate market tends to follow the residential market. And, he said, Broadway’s location as a main thoroughfare into downtown Denver, and the city’s improvements such as the addition of designated bike lanes, contribute to its appeal.

Besides Broadway, other areas in Denver where new development is changing the landscape of retail business includeTennyson Street in the Berkeley neighborhood and Colorado Boulevard, Kendall said.

“A lot of the older regime of retail is getting pushed out,” he said.

Colorado’s status as a “purple” state often gets tossed about, and in the battle to tilt the state to Republicans’ and Democrats’ liking, unaffiliated voters are caught in a tug-of-war.

Just how mixed the electorate really is sparks debate in a state that voted for Democrats in the last three presidential elections but where support for President Donald Trump has been high among Republicans. Statewide, active registered Democrats have inched past Republicans, compared to this time two years ago.

Democrats now lead with about 994,000 voters to Republicans’ 973,000, whereas the GOP held onto a 3,000-voter lead over Democrats in 2016.

But in the 2018 midterm elections, unaffiliated voters — those who don’t officially identify with a political party — are in high demand, viewed as having the potential to blur the red and blue lines. Unaffiliateds account for roughly 1.21 million of Colorado’s active voters, or 37 percent of the total.

“When you talk to people, nobody’s quite sure what the turnout is going to be this year — that’s part of why there’s so much focus on the unaffiliated voters,” said Matt Crane, Arapahoe County’s clerk and recorder, who oversees elections there.

In a time of increasingly polarized national politics — and even a strongly divided state climate — unaffiliated voters have grown as a group over the last decade, overtaking both major parties as the state’s largest voting bloc.

But don’t count them all as true independents, analysts say.

“I don’t think the impact of the unaffiliated voters will be huge,” said Seth Masket, a political science professor at the University of Denver. He added: “They tend to act a lot like partisans.”

Brewing for years The passing of Proposition 108 in 2016, which allowed voters to participate in a major party’s primary elections without officially aligning with that party, put the spotlight on undeclared voters. But they’ve been quietly gaining for years, Crane said.

“We’ve seen an uptick in unaffiliated registration since 2006 or 2007,” Crane said of the pattern in Arapahoe County. “It goes back that far, where you see people leaving both parties and going unaffiliated.”

Statewide, comparing year-by-year each August, unaffiliated active registered voters surpassed Republicans and Democrats, respectively, by 2013, according to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office.

Frustration with major parties likely plays a role, and Colorado’s state Legislature has been among the most polarized in the country — in terms of how far the parties are from each other in ideology — according to research by Boris Shor of the University of Houston and Nolan McCarty of Princeton University.

“When the choices seem so far apart between the parties, it tends to push people to register as unaffiliated,” said Robert Preuhs, political science professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

It’s common for millennials to register as unaffiliated, said Crane, a Republican running for re-election in November.

And, as with several facets of Colorado life, high population growth may play a role.

“New migrants from any other state tend to be more likely to register as unaffiliated until they get a sense of how the party operates in their state,” Preuhs said. More hard-line conservative or liberal voters may forgo the caution, he added, but newcomers to the state likely add to the unaffiliated count on the margins.

Even Western individualism may have shaped Colorado’s makeup, Preuhs said, referencing the idea that the Mountain West identity may not fit easily into Republican or Democratic policy positions.

“Relative to other states, Colorado has had a high proportion of unaffiliated voters dating back (a few) decades,” Preuhs said.

Caring 4 Denver This ballot initiative would raise taxes in the city and county of Denver by 0.25 percent, or 25 cents per $100, to raise $45 million for mental health services. A nonprofit board would be created by the mayor, Denver district attorney and city council president to distribute the funds.

The initiative that 10 percent of the funds will go back to the city to help pay for training for city officials and first responders on how to handle people with mental health needs and a co-responder program that allows mental health experts to ride along with Denver Police.

The 10 percent will also go toward funding for alternatives to jail for those with mental health or substance abuse needs. For the first two years of the sales tax, an additional 10 percent will also go toward the city for these needs.

Denver College Affordability Fund This initiative would increase taxes by .08 percent, or 8 cents per $100, to raise nearly $14 million for scholarships in Denver. The scholarships will be awarded to Denver residents with financial need that will be attending an accredited Colorado institution.

The tax would expire on Dec. 31, 2030.

A nonprofit board would be created to give out the scholarships

Healthy Food for Denver Kids The initiative would raise taxes by .08 percent, the equivalent of 8 cents per $100, to raise $11.2 million annually.

The funds will go toward healthy food programming and food-based education services with a focus on at-risk and low-income youth. The Denver Food Commission will be set up to distribute the funds. The initiative would expire on Dec. 31, 2029.

Supporting Our Park System City council president Jolon Clark proposed adding a measure that would increase sales tax by .25 percent, or 25 cents per $100, to raise $45 million for parks maintenance.

The funds would go toward the $127 million the city Parks and Recreation Department has in deferred maintenance projects around Denver.

OTHER BALLOT ISSUES: Democracy for the People This ballot measure lowers the amounts that an individual can donate to a campaign. The scale varies depending on what position the donation goes to — $1,000 to a candidate running for mayor, $700 to a candidate running as an at-large councilmember and $400 for candidates running for a district council position are some examples.

The initiative would also set aside funds for candidates who agree to specific fundraising terms, calling it the “Fair Elections Fund.”

The city could match $9 for every $1 donated by a citizen up to $50.

If a citizen donated $5, the city would match $45, for example.

The city fund would total $2 million per election year. Candidates for mayor can collect up to $750,000 from the fund. Candidates running for councilmember-at-large, clerk and recorder or auditor can collect up to $250,000. District councilmembers can collect up to $125,000.

The measure would also decide if corporations can no longer donate to campaigns.

Ballot initiative changes The city council has added a measure that would change the rules on how to add items to the ballot. Currently, petitioners must submit a draft of their proposed ordinance to city council before going through a review process. Once reviewed, petitioners submit ballot materials to Denver Elections Division, which has three days to accept or reject the proposal.

If accepted, the petitioners can then seek more signatures. The number of signatures needed to get on the ballot is equal to 5 percent of the total votes cast for mayor in the most recent election. In the 2015 mayoral election, 94,525 people voted, according to Ballotpedia, meaning petitioners need 4,726 signatures.

The new initiative would change the requirement to 2 percent of active registered voters in Denver County at the start of each odd-numbered year. In 2017, there were 399,353 active registered voters in Denver County, according to data from the Secretary of State, meaning petitioners need 7,987 signatures.

In either case, the number would change as 2019 is both a mayoral election year and an odd-numbered year.

The council has also proposed a measure making the director of elections a city employee instead of an appointee of the clerk and recorder as a question on the ballot.

To those who enjoy the scarier side of Halloween FROM THE EDITOR

fter work, I like to curl up under a blanket with some popcorn and cocoa and the latest Stephen King novel.

I didn’t always enjoy scaring the daylights out of myself. When I was young I went to a Halloween sleepover and watched “The Ring.” Let’s just say that for the next seven days I didn’t get much sleep — and neither did my parents. I also spent the car ride to my first haunted house hugging a Care Bear stuffed animal.

Years down the line, after being chased by a maniac with a fake chainsaw at a haunted house, my pumping heartbeat somehow became a fun event. Now, I look forward to Halloween every year.

Why do some of us enjoy the suspense of a horror movie? There are people like me, who try to watch as many scary movies as they can get their hands on in October. Then, there are people like my mom, who held my hand in a death grip the whole time we watched “The Conjuring.”

Sociologist and author Margee Kerr has done extensive research on the fear response. Kerr is the author of “Scream: Chilling Adventures in the Science of Fear,” and is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh.

Her research shows that some people get a natural high from chemicals released in the body in the fight-orflight response. An animated TedEd video with a lesson

by Kerr goes into detail on the reactions and how it can vary from person to person. The video can be found at https://bit.ly/1YMipgk.

Locally, Bernadette Calafell researches on how fear is represented in mass communication, such as movies. As a professor of communications studies at the University of Denver, one of the classes she offers is Monsters in Popular Culture.

Like me, Calafell has a self-described obsession with horror. As a Latina, she also drew interest from how monsters are represented in the folklore of Mexico.

Calafell began doing research on horror five years ago.

Oftentimes, she said, horror movies reflect the struggles of everyday society. When women’s rights issues are prominent, so are movies about witches. On some level, the witches represent a struggle for power and acceptance.

Another example she used was Jordan Peele’s recent film “Get Out.” The theme of the movie is race relations, an issue that is widely talked about today.

“Horror becomes a way for folks to deal with the real horror that’s in our society,” she said. “There’s something behind the monsters and why people are drawn to them.”

Still, there are some that like horror movies purely for the enjoyment of them, Calafell said. While she enjoys movies like “Get Out” and “Gingersnap” — a werewolf movie she calls “feminist horror” — she also enjoys the less sophisticated slasher movies.

As we enter into another Halloween season, talking with Calafell made me wonder what some of the real monsters are behind my favorite pieces of horror.

Scary movie season started for me when “The Nun” was released in theaters in September. In August, stories of sexual assault by Catholic priests dominated headlines after a report from a Pennsylvania grand jury was issued.

It certainly adds weight to Calafell’s research.

As the month goes on, I will gobble up horror movies like a trick-or-treater does candy.

But I’ll also sit back and enjoy fall and all the other goodies that come with it — hearty soups, cider and one of my all-time favorites, pumpkin carving — when I need to slow my racing heart down, just a bit.

Neighborhoods ‘go a long way toward pulling us together’

W LETTER TO THE EDITOR It is misguided to have a sales tax to fix roads. There is already a tax assessed for that purpose — the gas tax, in which users pay at the pump. To assess a sales tax to fix our roads is like charging a baker for a lodging tax. It makes no sense and it is not fair.

The gasoline and diesel tax is a user tax, which means that those who drive on the roads and use the services pay the tax, which goes toward the maintenance of our roads and highways.

But the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce and other business groups throughout the state do not want to see the cost of diesel and gasoline rise. They want all of us to subsidize their operations with a dedicated sales tax.

It is unjust. A user tax is a fair tax, the way

taxes are supposed to be. Those who use the service pay the tax. The gasoline tax has stayed the same for 15 years. Vehicles get much better gas mileage now than they did years ago, so that means less money per mile to repair the roads. It is time to raise the gas tax and forget about a subsidy, oops, I mean sales tax for all.

ashington Park, Congress Park, Capitol Hill, Baker, to name a few — all familiar names representing the classic Denver neighborhoods that comprise our wonderful city. Each GUEST neighborhood has its COLUMN own eclectic character and charm and no two are exactly alike.

But are these neighborhoods more than just places to live and hang our hat at the end of the workday?

In 2000, Harvard Professor Robert Putnam published the book Tom Snyder “Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of the American Community.” In it he outlined that since 1960 there has been a steady decline in the American community measured by various metrics like involvement; people belonging to social, political and civic organizations; time spent with family and friends; and a host of other areas. Putnam goes on to identify what exactly, in 1960 and in the ensuing years, shifted. He presents a few reasons but one of the primary catalysts was the rise of the car in everyday life and the ensuing sprawl it enabled.

Putnam explains the car enabled our cities

to spread out far and wide. That sprawl, usually by design, separated the different parts of our life geographically that previously were, by necessity, centrally located. Time suddenly had to be spent driving to work, to the store, to social gatherings, to meet with friends, as each of those activities were now likely separated from the place we actually lived and slept.

That loss of time spent commuting and the removal from community of the very elements that bring people together greatly contributed to increased isolation and the loss of a sense of community.

Why our Denver neighborhoods matter is likely the same reason you found your way to one in the first place.

To some degree they are the antidote to what urban sprawl created. Each of our neighborhoods is a bit like a small town that just happened to be dropped into our larger city. Imbedded in each are likely parks, coffee shops, restaurants, grand old mansions and tiny homes of days gone by.

Chances are you spend time walking to places and, as a result, a little less time in the car. Just the act of walking connects you with your community — to the earth under your feet, to the buildings and people, to a sense of place. Let your voice be heard this budget season

s a public servant I’m only as effective as my ability to listen to constituents and must lead with neighbors’ voices echoing in my mind as I make decisions.

That is why each year GUEST before the city’s budget COLUMN process I take time to do a “temperature check” with constituents to learn more about their values. As I advocate for specific policy positions on behalf of residents in District 9, and the city as a whole, I use the information gathered Councilmember from surveys you and your neighbors have Albus Brooks filled out.

We are in the 2019 budget season, which means that Denver City Council is working closely with the Mayor’s office and Denver’s city agencies to determine funding priorities for next year, and it’s important to me that these budget priorities reflect your values. It is good for a city to speak about issues concerning the lives of its residents, but

what is even more important is for us to put our money where our mouth is.

With that in mind, I want to share with you the ways this proposed budget attempts to address the concerns of the top three issues facing Denver’s residents.

The number one issue facing Denver is affordable housing. Nine out of 10 Denverites agree that we are currently in the middle of a housing crisis.

I have not attended a single neighborhood meeting where this did not come up in a meaningful way. Denver’s working class faces ongoing threats of displacement because there simply aren’t enough affordable housing units in the city. This budget allocates an additional $50 million to housing for those experiencing the greatest risk of displacement, including our workforce and homeless populations. This will come from marijuana tax revenues and our recently doubled affordable housing fund.

If you’re like most of your neighbors, the time when you are most likely to be frustrated during the day is when you are behind the wheel of your car, sitting in traffic — which is the second issue we are facing. Denver’s rapid growth has put a strain on our transportation infrastructure, leading to widespread congestion.

Traffic is not only deeply frustrating, but it

also is unhealthy for our city and the environment. The path to eliminating congestion is not to provide more paths for your car, but investment in transit. We must make significant investments in multimodal transportation to reduce the amounts of single occupancy vehicle (SOV) trips. This proposed budget invests an additional $27 million into our Mobility Action Plan, but this is nowhere near the scale of investment that our growing city needs. For Denver to move forward we must do a better job of moving around, which is why I will be pushing for increased funding for public transit options beyond what is in this budget. We need a dedicated source of funding.

The third issue, and one that keeps city leaders up at night, is homelessness.

It is unacceptable to have a thriving city where marginalized populations have no other options but to sleep on the streets or in their car. The federal government has failed to make sizable investments in mental health and housing, so it is our responsibility as a city to take care of our most vulnerable residents.

Here in Denver, we have housed over 6,300 families and individuals experiencing homelessness since 2011. While we have made progress, we still have roughly 3,000 people experiencing

homelessness on a daily basis, with around 600 of them unsheltered. The proposed 2019 budget calls for 30 percent, which is $10 million, of our housing investment to be directed to those experiencing homelessness, and $14.7 million to be put towards facilities and services.

Clearly, this is short of what we need to fully solve this problem. That is why I will be strongly supporting “Caring 4 Denver,” which is on the November ballot. This initiative will provide $45 million for mental health and addiction services for children and adults, which will reduce homelessness, improve long-term recovery and reduce the use of jails and emergency rooms.

Scares of Shocktober include protecting our climate

cared? It’s Shocktober, be brave. All will be OK when the world says “scat” to the zombies.

Already, smart, worldly folks are deep into their crystal HELPER HERE balls, seeing clearly the climate is changing and AND NOW must be addressed as we do long-term planning. Figure how to get water in arid sites. More storms, floods, fires, quakes, eruptions, diseases! Be aware. Prepare.

Even say a prayer.

My Welsh grandfather, a minister intoned: “From gillies and Diana Helper ghoulies and all kinds of beasties and things that go bump in the night, dear Lord preserve us.”

Scary! I’ve had the frightening task of reading and commenting on a 212-page section of the proposed Denveright tome, “Parks and a Healthy City.” A haunting amount of city time, resources, money and paper has gone into this.

Does it list the “wrong” and how the “right” would fix it? That isn’t the layout. Is it I think she meant to say It isxx about how the parks — open green places of nature — make the city healthier, mentally and physically.

Seems a healthy city is one that runs well. Addressing climate change came up now and then, but some strategies seemed counter-productive.

My comment report was for our Registered Neighborhood Organization’s (RNO) official response about all the parts of D-Rite, which we will put into some order and present to our RNO general meeting. It’s scary to try to speak

for a neighborhood. You may hear howling…

Beware of too much candy Another scare warning comes from the greedy goblin — the gobblin’ of too much candy.

How many big bags of mini-chocofudgie devils have you already gone through? It tricks the teeth and torso, treats the candy-makers and dentists to extra income. Lots of little Batmen and Cinderellas go to sponsored parties, leaving you home with ol’ devil chocofudgie.

What to do with those left-overs? Find a place to onate them.

G. Goblin has one more scare tactic…the festive feast! Flying against our bat-ter judgment, here’s the menu for you, the ghostess with the mostes’: Start with a phantomato bloody scary (use the ghosters!), sandwitches, cackles and monster cheese. Then spooky seizure salad with boo!-berries. Eerie entrees: ghoulash, spookghetti, halloweenies. With sides such as slime-a beans, corn on the cobweb, French frights, black cat-sup, grave-y. Dessert: I-scream, devil’s food and white-sheet-cake, smashed pumpkin pudding. Wash it down with some coffi(ee)n and a bag of chocofudgies. Food is magic — it disappears.

Save our old homes The climate is warming — help! But a haunted house can provide chills! Scary to see fine old houses, suitable for haunting, going under the heedless horsepower of a “‘dozer.” We need to preserve some of these great old homes for future bumps in the night, eerie lights, annual frights and historic delight. They anchor our neighborhoods to the architectural glories that offset current uglitechture — and remind us of the legacy we are continuing.

Filling up on fiber key to filling up and getting fit

W

e have heard that dietary fiber is good for us, but you probably don’t know all of the reasons why.

The term “probiotic” EATING WELL is commonly used in yogurt advertisements, Paul Webster mentioning how probiotic bacteria are good for your gut health.

Fiber on the other hand is considered a “prebiotic,” meaning the fiber helps cultivate the probiotic bacteria in your digestive system.

Dietary fibers are found in plant foods and are classified as soluble fiber and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and can form a thick gel-like fluid when mixed with water, helping you feel full.

Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water and can pass through your digestive tract relatively intact. When the fiber reaches your intestinal tract, it feeds the good bacteria in your gut, creating the beneficial probiotics we need for good health.

Beyond helping you feel less hungry and being a prebiotic, there are other benefits to consuming fiber.

Several studies have shown that an increase in fiber intake along with a reduction in animal products can help reduce the risk of breast and prostate cancer. Studies conducted by Dr. Dean Ornish have demonstrated that increased fiber intake may even halt or reverse prostate cancer growth.

Other studies have demonstrated that in-

creased fiber intake can result in a reduced risk of stroke, lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, slow the rate of blood sugar absorption, improve gastrointestinal issues and help with weight loss.

Heart disease is the number one killer in America, and it was recognized more than 60 years ago that a high intake of dietary fiber, along with a low intake of meat and other animal products significantly reduced the risk of heart disease.

give us an opportunity to connect and feel a part of something: a community. It’s not just a place to live, it’s a town, a village, a place where we are not so isolated, where we have to interact and belong even if we are not particularly trying.

Our Denver neighborhoods are a model for what in part ails us, that breakdown of community.

They are certainly not the only model or solution out there but they go a long way toward pulling us together when so much strives to isolate and pull us apart. I love the fact that 100 years ago the people who built these communities got so much right— likely all they knew.

Right now, the City of Denver is reviewing its DenverRight campaign, which will be adopted in early 2019. The plan, as the website states, “…will guide the city’s growth, development, parks, mobility options and more over the next 20 years,” sounds rather important. You can visit the city website, www. denvergov.org, to look at the plan more in depth and weigh in with your thoughts. Here’s hoping that city planners, government entities and developers look, learn and get it right for future generations.

So the next time you stroll down the street to grab a beer with a neighbor at some local pub or bump into someone you know at the corner coffee shop or just pick up and read this newspaper, you are connecting and contributing to what makes your unique neighborhood and this city so special. Well done and keep it up!

In 1956, Trowell and Singh published a paper in the East African Medical Journal that mentioned the health benefits of a high fiber plant-based diet.

The more, the merrier How much fiber should you eat? The American Heart Association recommends

25 to 30 grams of fiber daily, but the average American eats around 15 grams.

The optimal amount of daily fiber ranges between 35 and 75 grams, depending on which nutrition expert you ask.

Shooting for 35 or 40 grams of fiber is a good start, but more might be better. Adding lettuce, tomatoes and onions to your hamburger is not the solution. The winning combination is to replace refined grains, processed foods and animal foods with whole plant foods.

What does 40 grams of fiber look like on a daily basis? For breakfast, have one cup of oatmeal with a quarter cup of blueberries, followed by a mid-morning snack of an apple.

For lunch, eat a peanut butter and banana sandwich on whole wheat bread, and then an afternoon snack of a third cup of hummus with a quarter cup of carrots and a quarter cup of celery.

For dinner, eat a cup of whole wheat pasta with a cup of broccoli and a quarter cup of almonds topped with your favorite tomato sauce.

Take a step toward better health and increase your fiber intake by increasing your consumption of plant-based foods.

Human-dog relationship offers something to sink teeth into

hen my DVD remote was being made, they added beef flavoring to the liquid plastic before it was molded.

That’s the only explanation I can think of. It went missing. I finally located it under the bed.

QUIET It had a succession of teeth marks that DESPERATION matched Harry’s dental records.

Harry has dozens of other chewable toys that were intended for dogs. They were purchased at pet stores. The remote was not.

The remote still worked, but its grisly appearance was unwelcome.

You can find anything online, and I found an unused replacement that had been picked up at a Santa Clara estate sale.

I put blue tape on the new one. It was Craig Marshall supposed to remind me not to leave it bedside.

Smith I like to watch a few minutes of old movies before I meet the arms of Morpheus, and I just leave the remote on the table next to the bed when that time comes.

In the morning, I’m supposed to remember where I left it the night before, but I am not that accountable, and Harry knows it.

Sitting at my computer this a.m., I heard gnawing and looked down.

The little tubular fiend and I were separated for no more than two minutes since leaving the bedroom earlier, but that’s all it took.

It could be worse. I have heard much worse. One reader lost three pairs of expensive shoes, she said.

Belts, others have claimed, slippers, sandals, table legs, seat cushions, gloves, knick knacks, and paddy whacks.

One evening, the Red Avenger approached me with what

looked like a stuffed mouse and dropped it at my feet, and smiled at me.

Harry doesn’t own a stuffed mouse. It was the real thing, deceased, and relatively fresh.

I said, “We are not a cat, Harry.”

I explained to him the use of the editorial “we.”

“We” replaces the first person in an editorial, thereby lifting the onus of accountability from one person to the entire editorial board.

My use of it with Harry, however, was intended to blunt my disapproval. With this particular hound, I am not a very tough tactician.

I know better, but he is not, as it were, on a short leash.

However, I don’t want to encourage cat behavior in him. Cats bring their prey to you, and sit aloof in corners and lick their paws all day, and that’s about it.

Harry will be 1 next month, or 7, depending on how you look at it. These are wonderful times with him. In a blink he will be 5, then 10.

He moved here in February, but by all appearances we have been best friends for years, even decades.

If you can take it, watch something called “Owen and Haatchi” on “E:60.” Owen, a boy, has Schwartz-Jampel syndrome, and Haatchi, a dog, is missing a leg and his tail. Haatchi was tied up — intentionally — next to train tracks and a train ran over him. But he survived.

It’s a short documentary, and there’s also a book.

Every time I watch it, I hope that Owen’s parents have prepared him for the one bad day all dog owners face.

Harry’s appetite for things that are not intended for him has cost me less than $100. He’s worth it, and more.

Clearing the smoke

Denver’s second social cannabis space set to open this fall on S. Broadway

A

fter two years of looking at about 50 locations for their business and talking to 17 neighborhood organizations, mother-and-son duo Megan Lumpkins and Taylor Rosean are opening Denver’s second legal cannabis consumption business: The pair estimates Vape and Play at 1753 S. Broadway will open by the end of the year.

The neighborhood organizations “in one little way or another helped us fine-tune the customer-, neighborhood safety-approach business model that we have,” Lumpkins said.

Vape and Play will have a salon-style area where people can consume their own cannabis via a patent-pending vaporizer that was designed by the company, Rosean said. City rules behind the consumption license state that the business cannot sell cannabis, so all customers must bring in their own from a dispensary.

From there, Vape and Play will have a lounge area for customers where they can watch TV, sit with friends or play board games. The business also plans to bring in entertainment options such as comedians, fitness classes, seminars and more.

The pair are hoping to have a soft opening in November for people within the cannabis industry. The soft opening will allow Lumpkins and Rosean to make sure things run smoothly, Rosean said. Vape and Play will then fully open by the end of the year.

Educating the community Rosean said he hopes to reach all corners of the diverse cannabis community. He is also hoping to show neighbors that the stereotype of stoners is not what this business is about.

“The cannabis community isn’t a bunch of bums and schmucks,” Rosean said. “I think about cultured and open adults experiencing social events together.”

The idea behind Vape and Play started with the passing of Initiative 300 in Denver in 2016.

The initiative allowed for cannabis to be consumed within a licensed business location in the city of Denver as long as it complied with several rules, such as the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act which prohibits indoor smoking.

After the initiative passed, Rosean became more involved in the legislative process, learning how to apply for a license and how the businesses would work. A large part of getting approval for Vape and Play was educating the d community on what a social consumption license meant. Many of the people they spoke with did not know what the license was, or that neighboring residents had so much say in the business, Rosean said.

“Often, (neighbors) are unaware of their very own power in this whole play of business,” he said.

WHAT IS INITIATIVE 300 The social consumption initiative was passed

by Denver voters in 2016. The law allows for people to consume marijuana in a private setting as long as the business has the appropriate license and complies with several regulations. People cannot smoke indoors for example and the consumption of marijuana cannot be visible to the public.

Businesses that apply for social consumption licenses also have to make sure the location is not nearby to schools, recreation centers or addiction treatment centers.

monthly meetings as well as neighborhood events to build trust with the community. She added that both were receptive to residents’ concerns such as smell, crowds and people driving after consuming marijuana.

Having owners that were open and receptive was especially important because social consumption businesses are “uncharted territory,” she said.

“They’ve been pretty transparent throughout,” Razzaque said. “It just allows neighbors to have one-on-one time to chat and also develop some trust.”

The neighborhood will continue working with Vape and Play once the business opens, Razzaque said.

The search for space Because so little was known about the license, it was a challenge to find a space that complied with the rules, as well as a spot that would be welcomed by the community.

Lumpkins said she created a mapping system that would show if a location up for sale or rent was compliant, meaning it was not located near schools, child-care businesses, alcohol or drug treatment facilities or city-owned recreation centers and pools. Once they determined a spot was good to go, Lumpkins would start making inquiries. The pair also wanted to find a spot that was accessible for patrons.

Getting a license

Regulations behind the social consumption license require businesses to work with the neighborhoods in which they operate. Many people Megan Lumpkins and Taylor Rosean of Vape and Play spoke with, they said, did not know that the community dictated factors such as the hours a consumption business can operate.

Vape and Play is only the second business in Denver to be approved for a consumption license. The first business, The Coffee Joint, opened in the Lincoln Park neighborhood in northwest Denver in March.

Eric Escudero, director of communications with the Denver Excise and Licensing, which handles social consumption applications, said there are no other pend-

Finding funding for Vape and Play was also a challenge. Rosean said the pair attempted to crowdfund the business through Indiegogo, and tried to get outside investors through MJ Biz Con, a convention specifically for cannabis business. Neither was successful. The pair decided to bootstrap about $500,000 from family and friends to get the business running.

“It’s tough out there,” Lumpkins said. “This is a first. Nobody knows what this looks like.”

New industry As an entrepreneur and former dispensary employee, Rosean said the consumption business is the most approachable model for people just getting started in the industry. Many cities have caps on how many grow and dispensary licenses they allow. Dispensary license fees for

Part of the reason there haven’t been many applications is because of restrictions, not only with the city, but also on the state side as well, Escudero said. For example, state regulations prohibit people from consuming at dispensaries.

Creating a business model around constumption of marijuana without selling it is not an easy task, Escudero said.

“It’s made it difficult to find that profit model,” he said. Vape and Play has “proven that if you put in the work, and if you’re interested in this license, there are plenty of avenues.”

Excise and Licensing regularly inspects businesses to make sure people are following regulations. Often, the department is tipped off by a neighbor’s complaint of a business not following rules. So far, Escudero said the department has not received any complaints about The Coffee Joint.

the city of Denver are also pricey. A recreation license in Denver costs $2,500 for a new retail license plus a $5,000 application fee. The costs can increase depending on cultivation licensing and if a store is also adding a medical license. Renewal fees for retail stores are $5,000 annually. Medical licenses cost $5,000 for the application and license and $3,000 to renew.

For social consumptions business on the other hand, it costs $2,000 for the application and license fee. There is also not as much startup cost behind the business since the business does not need the space and equipment to grow and sell marijuana.

Moving forward, Lumpkins said she hopes to be an example for other businesses looking to enter the social consumption market.

Navigating a new market has not been easy.

But after two years of work, they are ready to open up shop.

“We’re, first of all, excited to be open. That really cannot be understated,” Rosean said. “To be here at all is just surreal.”

Chrysanthemums are a colorful showcase

T

he chrysanthemum is one of the most popular fall flowering ornamental plants and is known for its many varieties of color, shapes, sizes and growth habit.

Under the crisp fall weather, the big and bold blossoms are held high on the strong stem and brighten the fall garden with golden yellow, orange, crimson, rose, pink and white.

The flower was described as a “quick puff of colored smoke” in John Steinbeck’s beautiful and sentimental short story, “The Chrysanthemums.”

This fall garden king was introduced to western countries from China in the 17th century. In 1753, Karl Linnaeus named this daisy-like yellow flower chrysanthemum, derived from ancient Greek — chrysos (gold) and anthemon (flower) as “golden flower.”

This introduction created excitement among the European horticultural industries and spread quickly.

In 1843, the first chrysanthemum show was held in Norwich, England. More varieties of decorative chrysanthemums were imported from Japan in the mid-19th century by wellknown British plant hunter Robert Fortune.

The chrysanthemum was first cultivated in China as early as the Han era, 206 B.C.- A.D. 220, as a flowering herb believed to give people longevity. The aromatic chrysanthemum tea is still a familiar tea in China, brewed in a teapot with dried chrysanthemum flowers and boiling water.

Around the 8th century when chrysanthemums were brought from China to Japan, they created a sensation among Japanese

elites of the imperial court with its beauty.

Following the Chinese custom, Japanese nobles celebrated their Chrysanthemum Festival on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month to promote longevity and prosperity. People enjoyed viewing the beautiful treasured flowers while drinking sake with floating chrysanthemum petals and “evening dew,” which collected from the chrysanthemum flowers the night before.

Eventually, Emperor Gotoba settled on the choice of the chrysanthemum flower as an imperial seal.

With the passage of time, when chrysanthemums were discovered in the deserted gardens of the aristocrats, they were replanted and spread to the public.

The chrysanthemum can be easily propagated from cuttings rather than from seed.

The process involves cutting a few inches of the growing tip, sticking it into well-drained propagation soil, and keeping it moist until roots are established. The chrysanthemums can also be divided very easily in the spring.

Pinching the plants in early July will encourage them to branch out rather than getting leggy and too tall, and to put more energy into flower production.

Chrysanthemums are a short-day plant, meaning they are stimulated into making flowers bloom when daytime becomes shorter. In the modern era, the commercial greenhouse growers control lighting, using artificial light, to simulate the appropriate conditions, which enable chrysanthemums to

Tricia Chinn Campbell Chinn Campbell brings moms together for a night on the town

Being a mom is a full-time job, but sometimes it’s nice to get away from the house and hang out with other adults — even if it’s just for a little while.

When Tricia Chinn Campbell first saw the movie “Bad Moms” two years ago, she was inspired to create her own community of moms in Denver. She started small, with movie nights where a portion of the ticketing proceeds went toward school fundraising. She also brought in local businesses early on with “swag bag” drawings.

“It became a hit, which I was a little surprised about because I never thought I’d go into event producing,” Chinn Campbell said.

She started hosting events in northeast Denver near her home neighborhood of Stapleton.

Soon, people outside of that area wanted to host events for their schools as well. Chinn Campbell now does movie nights by school, where moms can meet each other and hear about a specific Parent Teacher Association. She has also created “all school” showings, where moms from across Denver can hang out and select to which school they want to donate their ticket purchase.

Since she started the movie events, Chinn Campbell said she has raised more than $10,000 for schools in Denver.

As interest from the mom community grew, Chinn Campbell wanted to expand on the business.

She created Mom’s Night Out Productions and hosted her first Mom Up Project festival event in January 2017 in the Hangar area of the Stanley Marketplace at 2501 Dallas St. in Aurora.

Businesses rented pop-up booth spaces and Chinn Campell brought in speakers. About 600 people attended, with $8 of each ticket going toward school funding.

Chinn Campbell has already started booking booths for the 2019 Mom Up, which will be held Feb. 20 at Mile High Spirits, 2201 Lawrence St. She already has speakers lined up as well.

“I felt like I needed to do more enrichmenttype things instead of just movies,” Chinn

Campbell said. “I’m trying to connect people to other things.”

Mom’s Night Out will still run the movies, but will now also include talks with guest speakers such as the Tapas and Tempranillo event on Campbell Oct. 9 with local chef Maggie O’Toole. In November, Mom’s Night Out will bring in Leeann and Michelle Think They’re Funny, a comedy show with two moms.

Chinn Campbell created Mom’s Night Out because she wanted to give moms a moment where things were all about them.

“I saw the delight and the happiness of these moms coming together in community building,” she said.

The new speaker events are a way of bringing women together to learn about topics Chinn Campbell said she has heard interest in like health, cooking and entertainment. She wanted the new events to be an opportunity for women to learn more about a topic, as well as about other members of the mom community in Denver.

Before starting Mom’s Night Out, Chinn Campbell worked in marketing. She has also written two children’s books, “Kai and the Magic Jacket” and “Tika the Glass Jar.” “Kai and the Magic Jacket” is about a young half-Chinese boy who sees the spirits of his ancestors when he wears a specific jacket. When he needs guidance in his life he wears the jacket to ask his ancestors for help.

Before moving to Denver, Chinn Campbell and her husband lived in Silverthorne. They moved back to Denver for the schools. Chinn Campbell now works on Mom’s Night Out Productions full-time.

She hopes the events will help connect moms with women who have already been there.

“I remember what I went through when I was first going to a school with my kids and I didn’t know anybody,” she said. “It’s just bringing people together.”

Denver takes action against addiction Deaths related to opioid overdoses increased by 15 percent last year

In the lower levels of the downtown branch of the Denver Public Library, Rob Valuck, director of the Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention, holds up a small device with a spray nozzle, similar to nasal decongestants. The device contains naloxone, an antidote to opioids, which can temporarily reverse the effects of an overdose.

The device is easy to use and can help to save someone’s life, Valuck said.

After his speech, he pulled out a dummy of the device, asking Mayor Michael B. Hancock to demonstrate how to administer it.

The demonstration was part of a larger event, International Overdose Awareness Day, on Aug. 30. Opioids were involved in more than 42,000 deaths across the nation in 2016. In 2017, 201 people died of a drug overdose in Denver. Of those deaths, 70 percent of them involved three or more substances, Valuck said in his speech that day.

The event was a start of a larger push for the Opioid Response Strategic Action Plan released by the city of Denver at the end of July. Before releasing the plan, Hancock mentioned the opioid crisis in his State of the City speech, saying overdoes deaths had increased by 15 percent increase since last year.

During his speech, Valuck said that part of the reason overdose numbers have been rising is because a large number or people started using about 10 to 12 years ago. From first exposure, it takes that amount of time for people to build an addiction and habit to a substance before overdosing. It also means the number of deaths related to opioid overdoses are going to keep going up for the next few years.

“It probably will not peak until its in the range of 100,000 to 150,00 Americans a year dying from opioid overdoses,” he said. “Those trains have left the station and we cannot get them back.”

Getting people into treatment is the best hope, he said.

The city’s five-year action plan will focus on preventing substance (mis)use, improving treatment access and retention, as well as reducing harm. The city is defining (mis)use as using drugs for reasons other than their intended

For people already using drugs in the city, there can be barriers to treatment such as costs and stigma around asking for help.

Katelyn Cole, project coordinator of the PHASE program with the Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD), said some of those stigmas prevent people from getting the help they need.

She said it’s important to recognize that change doesn’t happen overnight. Many people who relapse forget that and close themselves off. But that is often the last thing they need, Cole said.

The MHCD has facilities througout Denver and offers services for all aspects of mental health, including recovery. PHASE specifically works with people on probation or parole in creating a safe space for people to engage in recovery for both mental health issues and addiction.

Part of Cole’s job as the project coordinator is to create a support network for people on their journey of recovery. Treatment and recovery can be a long process, Cole said. Many people go through relapses. Since Cole works with mental health as well as patients struggling with addiction, a large part of her job is counseling and directing people toward other resources to help them on their path to recovery.

But one of the most important resources a person in recovery can have is a support network, she said.

“I can’t stress that enough,” she said. “It’s not easy going through that alone.”

‘You don’t have to wait until you lose everything’

For Ariel Britt, a program manager at The Phoenix Center, 2239 Champa St. in Five Points., a support network helped keep her on the road to recovery. Britt has been sober for nearly seven years.

The nonprofit Phoenix Center, where she works, is a fitness center for people in recovery.

Britt works with youth prevention, hoping to get kids and young adults struggling with addiction on the path to recovery before they hit rock bottom. She moved to Denver from Georgia a year ago to help start the program at The Phoenix.

“Oftentimes, people don’t even get sober until they’re in their early 30s,” Britt said. “With the opioid epidemic and things of that nature there’s been a call to get sober a lot sooner. So you don’t have

to wait until you lose everything, until your life’s a debacle.”

The Phoenix offers free fitness programming for people with 48 hours of sobriety. The gym started in Boulder before moving its headquarters to Five Points. It now has two locations in Colorado and has expanded nationally. The business also partners with other gyms to offer Phoenix programming.

As a mentor to youth looking at recovery in Denver, Britt said she works hard to be open with them. As an adult in recovery herself, she still has mentors helping her along the way.

“When I look back at my journey and my recovery,” she said, “it’d be interesting to have met someone in recovery who was open about their recovery before I realized that I had a problem.”

City council debates $500,000 solution to Denver’s dog park problem

or years, Taylor Nelson would load dogs Ozzie and Titan into his car, start the engine and embark on his half-hour daily commute. Except he wasn’t commuting to work — he was going to the dog park.

“It was 25 minutes’ drive each way, and that was the closest one,” said Nelson, who formerly lived in Washington Park. “It was a lot. The things we do for our kids.”

For those in Washington Park and many others, long dog park commutes are just part of the daily routine.

But in response to requests from many residents for additional dog parks, Denver officials are considering using more than $500,000 of the 2019 budget to build a new dog park somewhere in south Denver.

The Denver area currently has 12 dog parks, which are designated spaces where owners can take their dogs off-leash. Anywhere else in the city, pet owners are required by law to keep their dogs on a leash.

In comparison, Las Vegas, a city with about 60,000 fewer residents than Denver’s 693,060, boasts 18 off-leash sites, according to website BringFido.

“As I was visiting other cities, I would notice that compared to them, we really don’t have an adequate number of dog parks,” said Jolon Clark, Denver’s city council president. “It felt like we were behind the times.”

Looking for the right space Clark, a fellow dog owner, first heard about Denver’s dog park problem when asked about it during his campaign in 2015.

“My constituents rose the flag, and I went to work advocating for them,” he said. Clark started a dog park group to talk about residents’ requests and surveyed his constituents via email, as well.

Denver’s Department of Public Health and Environment estimates that 89,144 Denver households have dogs and that 143,000 dogs live in the city.

That number rivals the child population of Denver—there are about 147,000 people under the age of 18 in Denver, according to the World Population Review.

With so many dogs in the area, Clark hopes adding a dog park will address issues of overcrowding at current parks.

“We used to go to Railyard Dog Park, which was very, very crowded on weekends,” Nelson said.

The park at 19th and Little Raven streets, which is approximately .8 acres in size, is smaller than most others in the city. Berkeley Dog Park at Sheridan Boulevard and West 46th Avenue, for instance, covers 1.86 acres.

Because there is little space available in the city, this standard is often difficult to meet, Clark said.

As a result, Denver Parks and Recreation has decided to update the plan.

“We’re incorporating what we’ve learned in the past few years,” said Mark Tabor, the department’s principal park planner. “Some of the standards of size, location and proximity are going to be revisited.”

Parks key to dogs’ physical, social health But even smaller dog parks, such as Railyard, have their advantage, Clark said. He believes that no matter their size, offering additional off-leash sites will discourage owners from violating the dog leash law.

“People get frustrated that there’s no place to have their dog play off-leash, so they let their dog be off-leash in places where they’re not supposed to,” he said. This often results in tension between dog owners and other park visitors, he said.

Therefore, he said, “creating a safe place for dogs where we don’t have that conflict between users is critical for all our residents.”

Likewise, Tabor stressed that all residents, not just dog owners, should have a voice in the decision to build a new dog park.

“When you develop a dog park, that land can’t be used for anything else,” he said. “You have to find a park that has enough open space so you aren’t taking away an opportunity from others who don’t have a dog.”

Dog owners advocating for the new park say dog parks are an integral part of their pets’ physical and social health.

“The dogs really do enjoy being in new places and meeting new dogs, so the more

places we can go, the better,” said Denver dog owner Brett Forsberg.

Nelson—who has recently moved to a new neighborhood, where the nearest dog park is just up the street—agreed with Forsberg. The parks don’t only make the dogs happy, he said.

The owners love them, too.

“I can’t imagine my life without them,” he said.

Grandoozy a ‘killer’ event About 55,000 people attended the three-day festival

n mid-September, Overland Park Golf Course’s fields nestled along the South Platte River became home to more than putters and par counts. The driving range instead was filled with music — 35 performances, in fact, over a three day weekend.

Grandoozy, one of the city’s first large musical festivals launched at the golf course for the inaugural Sept. 14-16 event, drawing an estimated 55,000 music lovers, according to organizers, to its three stages, yoga, dance parties with DJs, 30 dining vendors and 18 local breweries.

And it did so with relatively little adverse impact to surrounding neighborhoods, according to a neighborhood resident who said that despite a large amount of people and some hiccups on the event’s first day, the festival went as well as could be expected.

At 8 a.m. Saturday morning, Orr was awakened by the booms of microphone checks in the golf course.

But a quick call to David Erlich, the Denver-based producer of the festival helped solve the problem.

She also said people working the neighborhood hotline were quick to solve any problems from neighbors.

occured Sept. 14 when the concert ended. Crowds of people swarmed through the neighborhood, and some urniated in Orr’s yard. But the next two nights were more controlled, she said.

“They corrected. It was well-handled Saturday and Sunday night,” she said. “They’ve been accessible.

They were responsive.”

Inside the festival On the first night, Platt Park residents Cody and Bridget D’Angelo walked from their home to the festival. The couple had heard about Grandoozy more than a year ago and invited out-of-state friends to join them.

Bridget said it was the first real festival in the Denver area and with Superfly’s experience, she was excited to see what the company put together. She and Cody were able to walk to the festival from their house.

Superfly, the festival’s organizer, offered a limited number of discounted tickets — organizers offered a limited number of free tickets as well as half-off tickets — to residents in adjacent neighborhoods like Platt Park, Bridget said. But once they heard about the line-up, which featured national names such as Kendrick Lamar and Florence

+ The Machine, Bridget said she would have attended even without the discount.

Cody agreed.

“We just saw Bishop Briggs,” he said of the British singer and songwriter, “and she seemed stoked to be here.”

An economic and cultural boon Although Superfly and city officials estimated Grandoozy could hold 80,000 people per day, Denverbased producer David Erlich estimated before the festival that firstyear attendance would be closer to 20,000 each day. In total, the festival drew about 55,000 people over the weekend, said Chris Langley with Superfly’s media relations team.

Part of the excitement behind the event was the hope that it would be an economic driver for the city of Denver. Superfly co-founder Rick Farman said he did not have an estimate for how much money Grandoozy generated, but said the company’s other events, Bonnaroo and Outside Lands, have made about $10 million each. He added that it will probably take some time before Grandoozy sees that kind of profit.

“It typically takes a number of years,” he said.

Allegra “Happy” Haynes, executive director of Denver Parks and Recreation, said she hoped festival attendees learned more about the city’s oldest golf course.

“Golfers all know this place,” she said. “A lot of people (were) here that know nothing about Overland.”

Katy Strascina, executive director of the city’s Special Events office, said the festival was also an opportunity to diversify its tourism market. Superfly staff focused on creating local flavor within the event, which helped to showcase the food, drink and outdoor experiences that Colorado has to offer, she said.

Music festivals are also becoming more popular and the city was lacking a large musical destination, said Strascina, noting that before Grandoozy, Colorado residents had to travel out of state to find that kind of festival experience.

Neighborhood impact Before the festival, some residents in the Overland Park Neighborhood Association had concerns about the negative impact such a large festival could have on surrounding areas.

The group eventually split into their own organization, the Neighbors of Overland North (NOON).

Orr, who is president of the neighborhood group, said she was glad the festival did not reach the estimated capacity of 80,000 people per day.

“Once you start talking about 80K people per day instead of 15 or 20, you’re just going to quadruple the problems,” she said. That’s going to be problematic in this neighborhood.”

She added that some factors, such as the use of fireworks during performances, were not fully explained to residents. Before the Kendrick Lamar show on Sept. 14, surrounding residents received an email saying fireworks and loud noises would be used during his set.

But overall, Orr said she was happy with how responsive Superfly staff were to resident questions and complaints.

Some attendees also complained about confusion around car-share pickup areas. Because there were so many cars and festival attendees, connecting was difficult, Highlands Ranch resident Brittany Brands said.

But Brands said she enjoyed the festival and its layout.

“I think this has been an amazing event,” she said. “The late afternoon lineup (was) killer.”

Concerts, free lessons offered on Kids Music Day Staff report More than 500 music school and retail locations around the world will celebrate the third annual Kids Music Day on Oct. 5.

Each year, the national nonprofit Keep Music Alive partners with music schools, music retail and other music organizations to spotlight the importance of including music in children’s education. Events include open houses, instrument petting zoos, student music performances, community/family jams, instrument donation drives and more.

Kids Music Day is one of two international music holidays founded by the organization Keep Music Alive. In March 2018, the organization partnered with more than 600 music school and music retail locations in all 50 states, Canada and 10 additional countries to offer free lessons to new students (kids and adults) as part of the third annual Teach Music Week.

DPS slows down plan to pick new superintendent Public meetings bare tensions that run through school community

The Denver Public Schools board has pushed back the date by which it will name finalists for the superintendent job from October to November. The extension follows objections to what some students and parents said was a too-tight timeline for gathering community feedback, and a rocky start to that process. One heated exchange at a community meeting has even led to a police investigation.

The initial public meetings have surfaced longstanding tensions between those who believe in the school district’s vision and those who don’t. One point of agreement, however, has emerged from community members so far: The next superintendent should be an educator.

Superintendent Tom Boasberg announced in July that he would step down in midOctober after nearly 10 years at the helm of Denver Public Schools. Boasberg came to the district from a telecommunications company, where he was a senior executive.

Though he once taught public school in Hong Kong, the vast majority of his career was not spent in a classroom.

The school board is tasked with hiring his replacement and has been soliciting feedback across the city on the characteristics and qualifications the next superintendent should have.

On Sept. 4, it held the first of a series of regional meetings planned for this month.

But even the format of that meeting generated pushback. The atmosphere inside the Abraham Lincoln High School cafeteria got heated right away when a few people loudly objected to the plan that the more than 100 attendees break into small discussion groups.

“We are voters and we want representation!” one man said. “We want our voices to be heard!”

On Sept. 6, the board announced it would lengthen its search. Instead of naming superintendent finalists by Oct. 15, the board will aim to name finalists by Nov. 26 and make a decision by Dec. 10. An interim superintendent will be appointed to fill the gap.

COMMUNITY MEETINGS SCHEDULED The Denver Public Schools board has scheduled additional regional meetings in September to gather input on superintendent selection. The meeting schedule is: • Sept. 22, 10 a.m., Montbello Recreation Center, 15555 E. 53rd Ave.

• Sept. 25, 5:30 p.m., Hiawatha Davis Recreation Center, 3334 Holly St.

Consulting firm hired The board also announced it had hired Dimension Strategies, a Denver-based political consulting firm that board members noted is both minority- and women-owned. One of the founding partners is Katherine Archuleta, who started her career as a Denver Public Schools teacher before getting into politics and eventually working for the Obama administration.

The firm will help ensure the feedback meetings provide “both breadth and depth, because that’s what our community deserves,” board member Angela Cobián said. The decision to hire a facilitator was made a while ago and was not based on what happened the week of Sept. 2, she said.

At the regional meeting on Sept. 4 and a public comment session on Sept. 6, many participants said the next superintendent should be a person of color. About threequarters of the nearly 93,000 students in Denver Public Schools are Hispanic, black, Asian or Native American. The past three superintendents have been white men.

“We prefer a superintendent who represents the majority of our student population,” Jadyn Nguyen, a senior at DSST: Green Valley Ranch charter high school, told the board Sept. 6.

Other qualities that were mentioned included integrity, honesty, and transparency. Many people said the superintendent should be bilingual because more than a third of all Denver students are English-language learners. Others said the superintendent should live in Denver and send his or her own children to Denver Public Schools. Boasberg does not.

There was also consensus on the need for the next superintendent to hire more teachers of color, which the district has been trying to do. But progress has been slow. About 71 percent of teachers this year are white, whereas 77 percent of students are students of color.

Dulce Bustillos, a student at Abraham Lincoln High, said learning from teachers who share her cultural background is important. “It’s just more relatable to us because they might have grown up in the same situation we are,” she said at the Sept. 4 meeting.

There is wide disagreement, however, on whether the next superintendent should support school choice and charter schools, or walk back Denver’s embrace of them. The district is nationally known for following a “portfolio strategy.” The controversial approach calls for cultivating a mix of traditional schools and those with more autonomy, such as charter schools; allowing families to choose between them; and closing schools with chronically low test scores.

Mixed views The meetings in the week of Sept. 2 attracted several groups of charter school supporters. Some parents spoke about why they chose to send their children to charters.

“When I was searching for a school, I wanted to find one that would not only help develop and foster a love of learning, but most importantly, a school in which they could also grow as people,” said Magda Renteria, a mother whose three daughters attend Rocky Mountain Prep, a homegrown elementary school charter network. “I was lucky to find that.”

But the voices of those on the opposite side have been louder. A group called Our Voice, Our Schools has published a manifesto calling for a superintendent

who will, among other things, phase out the system that allows families to use one application to choose any school.

Brandon Pryor, a parent who has emerged as a lead critic, often wearing a red baseball cap that says “Make DPS Great Again” and delivering biting public comment at board meetings, got into a heated exchange with school board President Anne Rowe on Sept. 4. (Anne Rowe is married to Frank Rowe, Chalkbeat’s director of sponsorships. That position is separate from Chalkbeat’s news operation.)

During the exchange, Pryor called Rowe a racist and a white supremacist.

Pryor claimed Rowe poked him in the chest, while Rowe said she unintentionally tapped him while gesturing with her hands. The Denver police looked into the matter, but the district attorney’s office decided no charges were warranted.

Despite the Pryor-Rowe fracas, the meeting proceeded with more measured conversations. But tensions are likely to flare again, particularly in the far northeast, where some parents have strongly criticized the district’s policies for poorly serving students of color.

DPS board announces support of state ballot issue DPS receives grant, teaches students healthy habits Staff Report Farm-to-cafeteria program enriches student life Denver Public schools (DPS) is the thirdlargest procurer of local food in the state, according to a recent U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm to School Census. A news release from DPS said the school purchased nearly 200,000 pounds of fresh produce from farmers during the 2017-2018 school year.

Teaching children about healthy eating is a focus for the school district, the news release said.

Schools in the district also grow their own produce. Stephen Cochenour runs the farms for DPS. All of the food produced by DPS goes directly to students.

“Because DPS is the farm, it’s not as though there’s a transactional element like traditional farm-to-cafeteria programs,” Cochenour said.

“DPS owns the land and the seeds and I’m a DPS employee. We’re navigating this new space of what it looks like to focus on production with actual school farms.”

Board of Education supports Amendment 73 On Sept. 20, the DPS Board of Education unanimously voted on a resolution in support of Amendment 73, according to a news release. The amendment will be on the state ballot this November. The measure could

bring in $1.6 billion in additional funding for schools across the state if passed by voters.

DPS would receive about $150 million of the pool, the release said.

Amendment 73 will increase corporate tax rates, as well as the tax rates of those earning $150,000 or more.

If the measure if approved, DPS has proposed putting $36 million toward teacher compensation.

DPS receives $1 million grant for trauma awareness The Campbell Foundation awarded a $1 million grant to the DPS Foundation. The Campbell Foundation is operated by Janice and Jim Campbell.

The grant will support a strategy to provide training and coaching for traumainformed practices, according to a news release from DPS. The district will develop a trauma certification for DPS staff.

Autumn food drives on the horizon McKinley-Thatcher Elementary School at 1230 S. Grant St. will hold its annual autumn food drive beginning in early November. Donations support Thanksgiving food baskets for school families as well as the food bank at South High School. Community members are invited to bring donations to the school’s front office.

Families interested in enrolling at McKinley-Thatcher for the 2019-2020 school year are invited to RSVP for a school tour by calling 720-424-5600. Tours run the last Friday of the month from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and are a great opportunity to visit classrooms with the school principal and get all questions answered.

Fundraiser to benefit Colorado Feeding Kids Staff report Unity on the Avenue plans its 2018 community outreach fundraiser to benefit Colorado Feeding Kids, a local nonprofit that provides nonperishable meals to Colorado kids and families through food banks and schools, and to disaster areas around the world.

The Hearts of Hope Silent Auction is Friday, Oct., 19 at Unity on the Avenue, 4670 E. 17th Ave. Parkway, Denver. The event goes

from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and hopes to provide an additional 400,000 meals to meet the growing demand for food support. Tickets can be purchased for $25 each at www.CoFeedingkids.org.

Colorado Feeding Kids is an all-volunteer organization headed by Ken Bradley, president of the board of trustees. Cash donations are used to buy the raw material to make the packages containing six meals each. Each serving costs 25 cents, meaning $1 provides

four meals.

Meal packing takes place at the FERN Warehouse at least monthly and sponsored meal packs take places at various churches and clubs throughout the city and state.

“Colorado Feeding Kids’ goal is to end hunger in Colorado,” Bradley said in a news release. “This year we have distributed over 630,000 meals so far and in our 10-year history close to 6 million. But the demand is growing right here at home. We are receiv-

ing more calls from food banks and schools for our new offering, Backpack Meals. The backpack contains three six-meal packages providing a total of 18 meals and snacks for the weekend.”

According to the news release, one in five Colorado kids does not know when he or she will receive his or her next meal. One in eight Colorado seniors and families face food insecurity; seniors often have to choose between food and medicine.

New businesses and customers But development also creates potential for a new customer base.

For instance, across the street from Famous Pizza, which closed in August after more than 40 years of operation, a 270-unit residential building is going up. The building was formerly the Security Service Credit Union.

And Oregon-based Voodoo Doughnuts, which opened its first Denver location at 1520 East Colfax Ave. in 2013, will be opening a second shop in the Famous Pizza space.

“We’re excited and happy to be part of the

Denver community,” co-founder Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson said in a news release announcing the new store’s location, “and are looking forward to continuing to provide employment, fantastic doughnuts and smiles to a growing neighborhood.”

Other businesses in the area, such as Decade Gifts, are hoping that the development and new businesses, such as the popular Voodoo Doughnuts, will bring in a new group of customers.

But construction of the building has its price, said Decade’s manager Anna Norris.

The store relies a lot on foot traffic, which can be difficult with a construction project.

It also impacts parking in the area.

“Construction has hurt business,” she said.

“Every day it’s less parking spaces.”

Decade has been on South Broadway for 20 years. Norris has been working at the

store for the last six. She said she has seen rising rents in the area begin to drive out the smaller businesses, which hurts the ones that stay.

With fewer businesses in the area to visit, there’s less incentive for customers to come, Norris said. “The more businesses, especially retail, the better.”

But the empty spaces on Broadway aren’t likely to stay that way for long, as new businesses are thirsty for a place to sell product, Kendall said. Restaurants are becoming a more competitive industry as well, he added.

“There’s still a lot of folks chasing space,” he said. “Denver has a very competitive food scene. It’s getting a lot more exposure nationally.”

Hoping for a boom A little less than three miles down South Broadway, Schaeffer is still in the restaurant

game.

She runs her own pizzeria, Joyce’s Famous Pizza at 2120 S. Broadway, and still has three years left on the lease there. She’s hoping now that she’s down to one restaurant she can dedicate more time to making it flourish.

As a small business owner, she does any and all jobs within Joyce’s Famous Pizza — dishes, delivery and advertising. The pizzeria relied mainly on word of mouth and foot traffic in the past. Now Schaeffer is hoping to bring in more business since she can concentrate her efforts on one spot.

The boom of development hasn’t made it this far on Broadway yet, but Schaeffer is hopeful.

“I think this neighborhood is getting ready to boom,” she said. “I can see it, but it’s just me getting my name out there.”

Two churches celebrated longevity in September with the Central Church of Denver hitting 145 years and the University Park United Methodist Church kicking off celebrations for its 125th birthday.

Central Christian, 3690 Cherry Creek S. Dr., was founded three years before Colorado became a state. In its early years, Central Christian moved around north central Denver.

From 1902-1973 it resided off 16th Avenue and Lincoln Street in a building with a pipe organ, according to a news release from the church.

During Central Christian’s centennial birthday, the church relocated to its current space - organ and all.

Central Christian will celebrate its 145th birthday with a special service on Oct. 14 started at 9:30 a.m.

United Methodist, 2180 S. University Boulevard, turned 124 on Sept. 16, launching

a year’s worth of events leading up to its 125th next year.

“We wanted to do due diligence in celebrating the heritage and the history that we’re standing on,” said Valerie L. Jackson, pastor at United Methodist.

She added that the church has recently gone through a transition after Paul Kotte, its pastor for 20 years was promoted in 2013. Kotte is now the district superintendent for the Mile High Metro at Mountain Sky Conference.

After an interim pastor served the church for a year, Jackson took over. She is the first woman, as well as the first person of color to lead the church. Jackson is starting her third year at United Methodist.

“It’s exciting to stand on the shoulders of people who were visionary,” said of leading a church that has been in the community for more than 100 years.

United Methodist has between 350 and 400 members, about half of which are active members coming to a weekly mass, Jackson said.

Throughout the year of celebrations, Jackson said the church will bring in different speakers, as well as past pastors, to talk about the history of the University Park church and the United Methodist faith as a whole.

Eyes on the prize Both major parties, in and out of Colorado, are spending money to target unaffiliated voters, Crane said.

“There’s a real science behind trying to figure out how to woo the unaffiliated voters,” Crane said. Television ads, literature dropped at doors and social-media efforts are among the methods used to chase those voters in areas of the state where they’re prominent, and key messages from campaigns can be part of that targeting, he added.

Both parties have their work cut out for them because they’ve moved to further to the left and right in recent years, said Dick Wadhams, political strategist and former chair of the Colorado Republican Party. For example, Sen. Bernie Sanders did well in Colorado during his presidential run, he said.

“But it becomes more difficult to appeal to the more unaffiliated voters” the more

that happens, Wadhams said.

To be a Democratic nominee today, a candidate has to lean far left, and Republicans “have to pass the Trump test,” said Eric Sondermann, a Colorado political analyst, while discussing the governor’s race.

“You don’t see (Walker) Stapleton or others deviating much from Trump orthodoxy,” Sondermann said, referencing the Republican candidate for governor.

Judging by the June primary election, Democrats will hope more unaffiliated voters turn out to vote, while Republicans would likely be content with a normal election scenario, Preuhs said.

“Republicans tend to turn out more than Democrats and unaffiliated voters in midterms,” Preuhs said.

In the June primary, unaffiliated voters chose the Democratic ballot over the Republican one by roughly 70,000, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Parties that aren’t in power “tend to have more momentum,” Sondermann said previously. “It doesn’t determine what’ll happen in November, but I’d rather be holding the Democratic cards than the

Republican cards.”

On the fence?

It’s popular to point out that unaffiliated voters are Colorado’s largest voting bloc — making up more than one-third of the electorate — but practically, Sondermann said, that’s inaccurate.

“There are many unaffiliated voters that are tacit Republicans or Democrats,” Sondermann said. True unaffiliateds who can go either way would likely make up somewhere around 10 percent to 20 percent of unaffiliated voters, Sondermann guesses — which works out to just under 4 percent to 8 percent of all voters in Colorado.

But they’re still the “gold mine of politics,” he added.

“They’re the group that elected (President Barack) Obama and then switched and elected Trump — elected (Sen. Mark) Udall and then Cory Gardner,” Sondermann said.

Moving the needle For the midterms, “the big question” is how many in the group will actually vote,

Preuhs said.

“Even when they have stable preferences, unaffiliated voters are still less likely to vote” than affiliated ones, Preuhs said.

Their potential to pull politicians to the middle may not be monumental, according to Masket.

“In other states, at any rate, when we see primaries open up to unaffiliated voters, we don’t really see much of an effect on the elected officials themselves,” Masket said. “They don’t seem to become any more moderate, in large part because unaffiliated or independent voters simply don’t vote in very high numbers.”

Whether more unaffiliated voters participating will cause a shift in Colorado politics will take years to become clear, Preuhs said. And even this midterm election may not shed much light — identifying patterns is difficult given the uniqueness of the Trump administration and its influence, he added.

“For the real answers, we’re going to have to see,” Preuhs said. “We need more data to see what shift is going to occur, if any.”

For woman with cancer, run ‘an epic milestone’ Lung association’s annual fundraising event set for Oct. 14

Lisa Moran was at the top of her physical game during the summer of 2015: She walked almost 40 miles a week as a letter carrier and ran one 5K a week.

After living in Colorado Springs for almost 20 years, she decided to challenge herself by climbing the Manitou Incline, a 2,744-step staircase that goes one mile straight up Mount Manitou.

“I knew it was a challenge,” Moran, 47, said, “and I knew I could do it because of how inshape I was.”

And she did.

But difficulty breathing on the climb and a persistent cough soon led her to the doctor.

That’s when Moran — a non-smoker — was diagnosed with inoperable, incurable, stage IV lung cancer.

But she didn’t let the diagnosis hold her down.

Moran started treatment that September and, just a month later — with her friends, Team Peace, Lungs & Happiness — participated in the American Lung Association in Colorado’s Run the Rocks 5K, a walk/run through Red Rocks Park in Morrison ending on the amphitheater steps.

“We didn’t know what was going to happen with my diagnosis,” she said. “We didn’t know if it would be the last time we would be together because I had been diagnosed with inoperable, incurable, late-stage terminal cancer. But our first experience was so amazing we decided it would be a yearly tradition.

It gives me something to focus on and look forward to each year.”

Moran participated in targeted therapy and radiation treatment to her lung and spine and, within eight months of her diagnosis, was told by doctors there was “no evidence of disease.”

But lung cancer is tricky and aggressive and finds ways to resist treatment. The cancer resurfaced and Moran is now on her third round of targeted therapy.

“Two out of three therapy treatments were FDA-approved the year I was diagnosed, which is why lung cancer research funding is so important to me,” Moran explained.

“Lung cancer, there is a stigma attached and that is people think only smokers get lung cancer,” she said. “But there are more and more young, healthy, active people being diagnosed.”

According to the American Cancer Society, about 14 percent of all new cancers are lung cancers. Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined.

GOAL: To raise about $100,000 to support research and lung health programs in Colorado Last year, in addition to her battle with lung cancer, Moran was diagnosed with an unrelated progressive brain disease. In the last year alone, she had brain surgery and suffered a stroke that paralyzed the left side of her body and caused her to lose her peripheral vision.

But she refuses to give up.

She regained movement on the left side of her body and instead of leaving acute rehab in a wheelchair, like doctors told her she would, she walked out the front door with a cane.

She got a puppy this summer — a Labrador mix named Laynie — that has become her walking partner.

“She’s like my little trainer,” Moran said.

Now, Moran plans to take that same determination to conquer the Run the Rocks

For Moran, the Run the Rocks’ finish line has been an epic milestone in her life.

“It means I survived another year with stage IV lung cancer,” Maron said with tears in her eyes. “If I can get to that milestone, it means a lot to me.”

Ghosts of Cheesman Park Denver historian details spookier side of city’s past

O

n a cool night in Cheesman Park it can be easy to creep yourself out: Trees lining the sidewalk on the west side shroud the grassy field in the center in darkness. A growing silence weighs down the air.

But Denver historian and author Phil Goodstein points out the reason the hairs on the back of your neck are rising could be because Cheesman Park was actually Denver’s first graveyard.

“I have personally experienced this numerous times — you’ll be strolling and bicycling around and suddenly there is an icy cold pocket where the temperature seems to drop 10, 15 degrees,” Goodstein said.

A Denver native who attended East High School, Goodstein, 65, is a walking tour guide of his beloved city — of all its historical elements, but also of its cemeteries and ghosts. Most of the 20 books he’s written focus on Denver’s history, so he knows it well, including its dark and quirky secrets.

He has become an expert on what he calls the “seamy” side of Denver’s past.

He has written on ghosts in Capitol Hill and South Broadway as well.

Playwright Russell Hunter supposedly discovered the secret closet after hearing the sound of a bouncing ball throughout his house, Goodstein said. The house was later demolished and became the Summer House, a condo building on East 13th Avenue and North Williams Street.

The land that the Denver Botanic Gardens is built on, which sits on the western border of Cheesman park, as well as parts of surrounding neighborhoods were all part of the former Mount Prospect Cemetery.

When Denver was established by Gen. William Larimer in 1858, he decided that to be a top-rate city it needed a beautiful graveyard. But death rates in early Denver were high because of disease and the city’s population increased quickly, Goodstein said. And because the city didn’t have money for landscaping, maintenance of Mount Prospect graveyard was not kept up.

As time went by, the graveyard continued to be an eyesore. Grave robbers would frequently dig up graves. By 1870, the graveyard was a mess, Goodstein said.

“Since miners came out here to dig gold out of the ground, where’s a better place to begin than going and digging the gold out of the cemetery?” Goodstein said. “And they usually leave the bones where they found them.”

The city eventually petitioned Congress to change the land use to a public park.

City officials had to speak to Congress because it was found that the land sale in Denver was never official, meaning it was owned by the federal government.

But even that took time. When the city finally decided to start converting the land in 1893, removing the bodies became a gruesome problem. At that time, it was estimated 10,000 to 20,000 people were buried there.

“By 1893, there’s at least 5,000 graves according to the city, probably at least 10,000 that are still in place,” Goodstein said. “To get rid of the bodies the city hired the low bidder for the job.”

Hiring an undertaker to remove the remaining grave sites did not end well for the city, which said any graves still remaining after its deadline to remove them would stay there. Today, Goodstein said, it is estimated that about 2,000 graves are still in the ground throughout the Cheesman Park area.

Goodstein leads the tours with a flash of humor, warning people to watch out for sections of the park that may still contain a grave or to keep an eye out for strange red rubber balls near the Summer House.

Before Cheesman Park and the Denver Botanic Gardens came to be, the graveyard fueled a love of the spooky.

“For years, Denver was this wild, prank-filled Halloween town,” he said.

“If you needed some funerary art, coffin handles, even bones, you knew where you could find them for Halloween.”

Pat Milbery, who lives a few blocks away from his mural spot on the Larimer Lounge, said he likes to use bright colors in his art because it helps lift the spirits of passerby looking at the work.

“I think people need it,” he said of adding colorful works to the sides of buildings.

His mural, which includes a large tyrannosaurus rex and a purple octopus holding a boom box, has vibrant pinks and teals.

The pair are both part of SoGnar Creative Division, which Milbery founded. So-Gnar has several murals across Denver, including three in the “Love This City” project.

“We’re very lucky to paint as much as we do around the city,” Milbery said.

More than 60 artists from around the world came to the River North neighborhood for the 2018 Crush Walls event, which happened from Sept. 3-8. This year, artists also used the pavement as a canvas, adding colorful designs to the streets of the neighborhood.

While the event brings in artists

from around the globe, several local painters participate as well.

Wemfer, a local artist who is a veteran of painting in Crush, said it helps bring members of the Denver art community back together.

it a “spray-cation.”

He added that he works on whatever space the city will offer him. Recently, Wemfer painted an electrical box near Coors Field with purple and black as well as stencils of the Colorado Rockies logo.

Wemfer uses shapes to create motion within his works. He

started with a white base-layer and then works across it with one color at a time. By the time he’s finished there’s no white space left.

Artists add their Instagram handles to murals so that people can tag them when they take pictures. It helps connect people back to the work, Wemfer said.

“It makes people happy.”

Shepard Fairey, known for the Hope poster of President Barack Obama, painted a mural on the Denver Central Market Building on Larimer Street in the River North neighborhood. The mural was part of the Crush Walls art event, which included more than 80 pieces.

Endangered aye-aye born at Denver Zoo Staff report The Denver Zoo is celebrating the birth of one of the most rare — and most difficult to see — animals in the world.

With only 24 living in seven zoos in the United States, and an unknown number in the wild, aye-ayes are considered one of the strangest primates on earth, according to a Denver Zoo news release. With the birth of Tonks in early August, the Denver Zoo now is home to three of the elusive nocturnal lemurs, the release said.

Tonks was born Aug. 8 to mom Bellatrix and dad Smeagol. She is healthy and thriving. However, her first days were worrying for Denver Zoo’s animal care staff and veterinarians, the release said.

“We noticed that Bellatrix wasn’t showing typical mothering behaviors, so we decided to step in to give Tonks some supportive care,” lead primate keeper Becky Sturges said in the release. “We provided 24-hour care for the first week and had to teach Bellatrix how to nurse, but now she is nursing well and Tonks has gained a lot of weight. Now we’re just monitoring them to make sure things continue to go well.”

Aye-aye are classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and native only to remote parts of Madagascar. They are one of the most distinctive looking animals on the planet due to a number of unique adaptations, including coarse dark hair, long bushy tails, rodent-like teeth, piercing eyes and skeletal hands that feature extra-long middle fingers with hooked claws.

Aye-ayes are born weighing just a few ounces and reach up to 5 pounds as adults, and live up to 20 years.

Tonks is in the aye-aye exhibit in Emerald Forest with Bellatrix and Smeagol. However, she will remain in her nest box for at least a couple more months before exploring on her own and visible to guests, the release said.

Tonks, a female aye-aye, was born Aug. 8 at the Denver Zoo. Tonks was born to mom Bellatrix and dad Smeagol.
