First Avenue Hotel A historic building on South Broadway is gaining new life as tax cuts and design plans for affordable housing have been approved by the city. The First Avenue Hotel is being built by Zocolo Community Development, which will convert the building into 106 planned units. Zocolo plans to begin construction this summer.

The hotel building was first built in 1908, but hasn’t been in use since 2013. As a historic building, plans needed to be approved by the city’s Landmark Preservation office before construction could begin. City council members approved $2.5 million worth of tax cuts for the project in a June meeting.

355 Logan St. The one-acre site off Speer Boulevard at 355 Logan St. was recently purchased by Holland Property Group. The Washington State-based developer has been behind several projects in Denver, including the Union Denver Building at 1770 Chestnut Place downtown.

According to the Colorado Real Estate Journal, the site will be developed into 171 units.

The majority of the project will be one- and two-bedroom units, with five three-bedroom units. The building will also have 245 parking spaces.

The area was previously undeveloped.

BUSINESSES OPENINGS Chook This September, Platt Park will get an Australian-style chicken eatery at 1300 S. Pearl St. Chook will take over the former Village Cork spot, which closed in June after more than 16 years in the space. Co-owner Alex Seidel is basing the concept off of charcoalroasted chicken restaurants in Australia. Seidel spent a year living in Australia, where his wife is from.

Seidel also runs the Mercantile Dining & Provisions downtown and Fruition Restaurant off of East 6th Avenue.

opened its doors on July 12. In June, Queen City Collective Coffee opened in the shared space at 305 W. First Ave. Queen City will sell coffee daily in the mornings, while Novel Strand will open in the afternoons from Thursday through Sunday.

Novel Strand first leased the space in September 2017.

Lolli & Pops San Francisco-based Lolli & Pops is expanding into Denver with a new shop set to open in the Cherry Creek Shopping Center by the end of the year. The company first opened in 2012 and now has 57 stores nationwide. Lolli & Pops is adding five new stores, including the Cherry Creek location by 2019.

The gourmet candy store has a location in the Park Meadows Mall in Lone Tree.

Denver Corn Hole Games Longtime Denver residents Jon and Pam Dean have launched a new business from their garage in the University neighborhood.

The pair found several Craigslist postings asking for handmade cornhole boards and decided to make a business out of it. They first started making cornhole boards in March, making their first sale in April. So far, Denver Cornhole Games has sold 20 handmade, customized boards.

“It’s something we can do together,” Jon said. “I’ve been wanting to work with wood to make money for years.”

Jon said he makes the frames for the boards out of beetle kill wood. Pam makes the beanbags. Jon said the board fit into official cornhole regulations. Now that Jon is doing this full-time, he said he hopes to be able to make two sets of boards a day.

Some of their boards are sold at Fun and Funky Gallery in Bailey, Colorado, as well as online on www.denvercornholegames.com.

Sportsbook Bar & Grill The Greenwood Village bar has opened a second location in Washington Park. The location, at 266B S. Downing St., was formerly home to Wash Park Sports Alley. As the name suggests, Sportsbook is a sports bar with a full selection of burgers, sandwiches and salads.

The company’s website keeps a full tally of professional sports games in Colorado, as well as national and international events such as the recent World Cup. The Contemporary Herbalist The new acupuncture clinic at 533 E. Ohio Ave. opened in June and held a grand opening on July 13.

Socorro’s Street Tacos Last year, the White Palace building at South Broadway and East Bayaud Avenue came under new ownership. The building is home to Famous Pizza and Socorro’s Street Tacos. Under the new owners, the rent has gone up and Socorro’s closed at the end of July. Socorro’s is located at 19 E. Bayaud Ave. and has been there since 2010. Socorro’s owner Joyce Schaeffer announced the closure on its Facebook page.

“We definitely had many road bumps in this journey, and even today, so my apologies to all,” she wrote.

In the post, she cited the increase in rent as a reason for the closure.

Bayaud Barber Shop Schaeffer’s son Justin owns the barbershop next door to Socorro’s. Schaeffer announced on Socorro’s page that her son would be closing Bayaud Barbershop as well.

CHANGES Mayu Meditation Co-Op Mayu is extending into a lot adjacent to its meditation center at 1804 S. Pearl St. Mayu will use the lot to add more classroom space, as well as a garden that will open this fall.

Over the past nine months, Mayu has been working on renovation projects throughout its 5,000-square-foot building. In July, it announced the expansion of the garden space.

The space will be called the Koloskus Garden for Reflection and Healing and will be an outdoor meditation area.

Punch Bowl Social Punch Bowl Social announced that its location at 65 S. Broadway has a new VR Parlor for guests to rent. Punch Bowl has added three virtual reality gaming stations where the indoor bocce ball courts used to be. Eight people can rent individual sections with one VR headset and controllers. The stations have 10 games.

The South Broadway location, which is the original Punch Bowl, is the first in the restaurant chain to launch the VR parlors. The restaurant plans to expand the new program into five other locations across the nation.

The parlors are set up so that friends can watch each other play the games, which are single-player.

Ballot measure would improve and gain more park space

n Washington Park, Jason Schuck watches his three children play in a small creek. In the heat of the summer, the water is a nice break as the kids sift through rock and sand, hoping to unearth a crawdad or two.

Being close to the park is great for Schuck and his family, since everyone can find something to enjoy. The adults can take a few walking laps while the kids enjoy the playground.

Because of the recent heatwave, Schuck said he would like to see water features added to Washington Park. But mostly, he has no complaints.

“For a park this size, in a city this size, this park is actually very well maintained,” he said.

A ballot measure recently approved by Denver City Council would work to continue to provide quality recreation by expanding and revitalizing Denver’s parks. The measure, which voters will decide in November, asks voters to approve a .25 percent increase in the city sales tax to pay for park improvements.

Council president Jolon Clark, who represents District 7, which includies Platt Park and Washington Park West, wrote the proposal.

“It shouldn’t matter where you live, how much money you make, what your zip code is — everybody should have safe access to a world-class park,” said Clark, who previously worked as an environmental educator and associate director for the nonprofit The Greenway Foundation, which focuses on the South Platte River. “This bill, if voters pass it, would allow the city to actually deliver on that promise, because unfortunately right now we’re not.”

The proposal would raise Denver’s sales tax from 3.65 percent to 3.90 percent. The average for cities in the metro area, which includes seven counties, is 4.02 percent. For a Denver resident, the increase means paying about 25 cents for every $100. But it would generate an additional$46 million for parks, Clark said in his proposal.

Denver Parks and Recreation applauds Clark’s goal to try to increase funding for parks, spokesperson Cynthia Karvaski said.

“We’re only able to do so much with the money that’s allocated to us in our budget,” Karvaski said. “There are a lot of items that go into our budget every year that prioritywise we’re not able to fund all of them because we do share the general fund with all of the other agencies in the city.”

Denver has $127 million in deferred park maintenance that Clark hopes will start to be chipped away if voters approve the increase in November. There are more than 50 capital projects listed on the Parks and Recreation website, including trail resurfacing and irrigation projects.

The $127 million does not factor in deferred irrigation costs, which Karvaski said increases that number significantly. Should Clark’s proposal pass, the tax dollars would be

allocated to a special fund used solely by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Park overuse is also a concern to Clark, and he hopes that some of the money raised by the measure would go toward acquiring new land to relieve some of the highest-trafficked areas like Washington Park.The 165-acre park has a trail system for joggers and dog-walkers, as well as a playground and recreation center.

The park also has boat rentals for the lake in Washington Park.

The city of Denver just lost what could have been the newest park — in the Golden Triangle neighborhoood, Clark said. The property, at 1025 Bannock, is being used as a parking lot. But the city couldn’t match the $2 million grant requirement from Great Outdoors Colorado, a trust fund charged with distributing a portion of lottery proceeds toward outdoor projects.

Kris Green lives in Green Valley Ranch but works across from Civic Center park. He often takes his lunch break there. Green thinks that parks in Green Valley Ranch, where he often takes his daughter, have maintenance issues, but not parks closer to downtown Denver. Green Valley Ranch is in northeast Denver near the airport.

“I don’t have any complaints about any of the parks, they seem fine to me,” Green said.

“I don’t see why we would need to increase taxes for the parks — but don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there are viable reasons.”

Mayor Michael Hancock’s office has not yet said whether it will support the measure. Voters in November will possibly need to weigh this proposal alongside others, including a transportation and mental health sales tax increase. Clark said he is confident voters will weigh each proposal on its merit.

“I think Denver voters are eager to have the choice,” Clark said. “I think it’s a very smart electorate who will weigh all of these things that are put in front of them.”

While access to technology can be a benefit in some cases, it can also help thieves get into your home when items like garage door openers are left unattended.

Sonny Jackson, director of communications with the Denver Police Department, said for a long time thieves would kick in a side door to enter a garage and, potentially, a person’s home. Now, they’re more likely to break into a car.

“There’s a linkage between the vehicle and the garage,” he said. “We’ve seen the trend where thieves are breaching their car and taking the garage door opener.”

Jackson recommended people take the opener with them when they exit the vehicle or attach one to a keychain.

Many people leave valuables in their garage, making it a one-stop-shop for some thieves. Garages can also give thieves access to the house. In West Washington Park, a thief cut a hole through a garage door in June to pull the door’s security cord and gain entry inside, police said.

Jackson noted this particular method was a one-off event.

But garages are still a hot spot for thieves,

he said. Some thieves will drive through alleys looking for open garage doors and the opportunity for an easy entry.

Tips to prevent crime This is where technology comes in handy, Jackson said. Phone apps and other security items will alert people if a garage door has been left open for a long amount of time.

Having an automatic light system that will draw attention at night to either the car or the garage can also deter thieves.

Technology also helped a group of neighbors in Rosedale when a woman was attempting to break into homes there. Front door cameras showed the woman attempting to enter the homes at night. In one case, she did break in, but images from the front door cameras provided police with an idea of who the suspect was. Cameras have also been known to catch package thieves in the act, another crime that has increased in recent years.

Knowing your neighbors is also important, Jackson said. A neighbor might notice whether a garage door has been left open or a suspicious person is hanging out on the doorstep next door.

Neighboring houses are also a safe place to go should someone break into your home, Jackson added.

Using technology to your advantage and knowing your neighbors help homeowners to deter potential thieves.

“Neighborhood Watch is not an old, tired system — it works,” he said. “A combination of both is truly the best of all.”

enver native Kent Harvey never imagined his passion for outdoor adventure would segue into a career traversing some of the world’s most challenging terrain while capturing the experience for the big screen.

As a kid growing up in Denver’s Bonnie Brae neighborhood, Harvey attended Knight Elementary, Colorado Academy and South High School. Today, the awardwinning cinematographer has distinguished himself as a leading professional in the motion-picture business, climbed and filmed Mount Everest twice and brought his talents to bear on such major Hollywood movies as the “Bourne Legacy,” the “Iron Man” series, “Cowboys & Aliens” and the feature film “Everest,” on which he served as second unit director of photography.

After graduating from South in 1986, Harvey attended the University of Oregon hoping to connect his two passions: film and the outdoors. He ended up declaring a major in telecommunications and film and a minor in outdoor education while continuing to teach courses in climbing, mountaineering and kayaking. Unsure about what do following graduation, he moved to Crested Butte and joined the ski patrol.

“I was working for Outward Bound in the summer, doing contract work with the Forest Service in the fall and quite a bit of outdoor guiding,” he said. “But there was always this perpetual nagging interest in filmmaking.”

It wasn’t until he moved to Boulder a few years later that he realized he could do both.

While working as a guide at the Colorado Mountain School in Estes Park, Harvey met a group of stunt-riggers.

“These were old-school, seasoned climbers who had fallen into this world in the motion picture industry, heading off on films like ‘Cliff Hanger’ and ‘The River Wild’ and basically doing all the safety work for the actors during stunts and coming home with far bigger paychecks than I

Denver native’s outdoor experience takes his film career to new heights

Determined to find a job as a cameraman, Harvey started networking. His efforts led to “schlepping coffees for directors and production people” and eventually to work as a freelance director and cinematographer for Warren Miller Films and other documentaries.

As unscripted television began to take off during and following a writers’ strike, Harvey worked on a few seasons of the TV show “Survivor.” His big career break followed when he got a call to work as a cameraman for the 2004 feature film “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

“The production company had gotten my name from the stuntriggers and needed a cameraman who felt comfortable being a hundred feet up on a cliff filming

a car chase,” he said. “I spent a lot of sleepless nights wondering how I was going to get all the camera gear, myself and crew up the rock face. But when I showed up on set there was a thousand-person crew, a wench system to haul me into position and a cat walk across the rock face with nine stunt-rigger friends of mine to make sure I was clipped in safely.”

Harvey’s work on the film and other projects with that team led

to moving with his family to Los Angeles. He continued filming in rigorous outdoor settings worldwide, including his role shooting the 2014 movie “Everest” with Josh Bolin and Jake Gyllenhaal.

The movie would have been his third climb up Everest, but a tragic avalanche that killed 18 sherpas shut down the mountain to further filming. The movie used some of Harvey’s footage, as well as footage from still photographers for the final product.

He and his family moved back to Denver in 2014.

The father of two girls is currently busy working on feature films, including the recently released “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and “Jungle Cruise” with Dwayne Johnson. He appreciates living in Denver and playing in Colorado’s mountains, even though his work requires frequent, extended travel.

“It’s a funny thing about growing up in Denver that the friendships somehow just continue,” he said. “I hang out with people I went to kindergarten, C.A. and South with. If I lived in Los Angeles I could pick up more work, but for now I’ve chosen to live where my family and I can have a certain lifestyle together and I’m grateful for that.”

South High School principal will not return Jen Hanson said decision due to personal health concerns

The principal of Denver’s second-largest school, South High, has said she won’t return this fall. In a letter to families, Jen Hanson cited “personal health concerns” as the reason for her departure.

“It greatly saddens me to write this,” Hanson said in the letter dated June 18. “A strong school is never about the leader but the staff and students inside who make it thrive, and that is South.”

Denver Public Schools has named Bobby Thomas the interim principal for the 2018-19 school year. Thomas has been principal of a small alternative high school in southwest Denver called Summit Academy for six years, according to a separate letter from the district.

The letter says the district will

work with the South community to choose a permanent principal for the 2019-20 school year.

South has been on an upward trajectory for the 2½ years Hanson has been at the helm. The letter lists several bright spots, including a rising graduation rate, the second-highest college matriculation rate in the district, and being named a “School of Opportunity” by the National Education Policy Center at the University of Colorado — an accomplishment that netted South some positive press in The Washington Post.

The award was based on South’s success in educating

all students, regardless of their background. South is a district “newcomer center” for refugee and immigrant students from more than 50 countries. A book published last year by Denver journalist Helen Thorpe follows the lives of 22 immigrant teenagers there. In 2016, Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai made a surprise appearance at the school.

Almost 70 percent of the 1,600 students at South this past year were students of color, and more than half were from low-income families. Hanson’s letter notes that the number of students of color taking college-level classes at South increased from 72 in

2016 to 592 in 2018, one of the reasons cited by researchers in naming it a “School of Opportunity.”

In January 2017, shortly after President Trump announced a travel ban on citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries and temporarily suspended the U.S. refugee program, South invited local journalists to speak to a group of students in the library.

Seated in a semi-circle, the students talked about how South was a safe and welcoming place.

“Even if you are a minority student or a student who’s being targeted by politicians or told you don’t have a right to be here,

we want you here at South,” said then-senior Cherokee RonoloValdez, who was born and raised in Denver.

In her letter, Hanson said she knows South will continue to distinguish itself locally and nationally. “South is truly the epitome of what a public school can and should be,” she said.

The district’s letter says interim principal Thomas has family ties to South: his wife, mother-in-law and father-in-law are alumni of the school. It also points to Thomas’s track record, noting that he oversaw the improvement of Summit Academy from a low-rated school to a high-rated one. (The district’s school ratings are largely based on test scores.)

Summit Assistant Principal Juan Osorio will take over as principal there, district officials said.

The letter says South families should expect more information in the fall about the process of choosing a permanent principal.

The district is also still searching for a permanent principal for another of its high-profile schools, Manual High School in northeast Denver.

A changing south Denver remains a desirable area to live

im O’Byrne remembers how he and his wife were the young couple in the neighborhood when they moved into their West Washington Park home 20 years ago. He’s happy to see the demographics change as more young families move in.

With the rising home values in Washington Park, though, he’s not sure he could afford to buy his home today.

“We could sell our house and make a lot of money, but we couldn’t get back in,” O’Byrne said. “We could live like kings in Iowa.”

In the 10 years since the Great Recession, Washington Park — known in large part for its popular namesake park — and other

south Denver neighborhoods have seen a huge boost in home costs. In January 2009, the median selling price for south Denver was $275,000. By June of this year, that number had jumped to $472,500, according to data from the Snyder Realty Team in Denver. But despite the expensive price tags, the neighborhoods still draw new buyers, and long-term residents say they couldn’t envision themselves anywhere else.

“It’s a combination of everything. I like the older neighborhoods, the trees,” O’Byrne said. “You can feel like you’re not in the middle of the city, but (it’s) 10 minutes away.”

he Great Recession wiped out the greatest amount of wealth in the United States since the Great Depression.

The catalyst, lest we forget, was the housing bubble created by lax lending policies, creating billions of dollars in bad loans and artificially inflating housing prices around the nation. The house of cards began to crumble in 2008 and, with it, property values.

Denver has never led the way in excess when it comes to housing

prices. Before the recession it was common around the country to see consistent double-digit appreciation of home values—sometimes in just a matter of months. Not so in the Denver market.

Denver’s housing increase was driven by population and job growth.

People bought real estate because they needed it and generally speaking, could afford it.

A sharp rise in prices As a real estate agent in Colorado since 2004, Platt Park resident Nancy Levine has had an insider’s view of how the housing market has changed.

Although many homeowners want to sell because of the lucrative market, she said, many also realize that selling for profit means they may have to relocate outside of Denver, where housing costs aren’t quite as high.

Levine, now a broker associate with Liv Sotheby’s International Realty, lived in Greenwood Village in the 1980s when she was growing up. She remembers her mother, also a real estate agent, talking about how she would succeed — by selling a $100,000 home.

“She literally thought that would mean she was in the big time,” said Levine, who bought her first home for $150,000 in Bonnie Brae in 1994 and whose home sales today range from $300,000 to multi-million dollar homes.

These days, finding a home near Washington Park at an affordable price for first-time home buyers can be difficult and exhausting, she said. The median sales price hovers at about $735,000. It is not uncommon for a house to have nearly 20 offers within the first week. Homes spend an average of 20 days on the market, Levine said.

On “the east side of Wash Park it’s really hard to find something that’s not really in bad shape for under $900,000,” she said.

“There’s a lot of first-time home buyers that have just given up.”

While the spike in costs is universal around most of Denver and its nearby suburbs, such as Arvada, Levine said some neighborhoods west of Interstate 25 can still be in the affordable range. She shows first-time buyers homes in Denver’s Athmar and Harvey Park neighborhoods, as well as Barnum and Barnum West. Prices there sit at about $300,000, Levine said.

Amenties, development and historic value Access to Washington Park itself is a huge draw for many residents. The 165-acre park, bounded by Franklin and Downing streets to the east and west, surrounds Smith and Grasmere lakes. It has walking paths, grilling options and space for lawn games and weekend soccer and volleyball matches. Joggers and dog-walkers can enjoy the mile-long park’s paths.

“I’ve been going to that park for 50 years,” said Kathy Newman, 73, who remembers when people could get on the Grasmere Lake’s island. “I think it’s always been popular.”

number one reason Newman has lived in the neighborhood since 1990.

Retail growth in areas such as South Pearl Street, which has a bevy of restaurants and boutiques, also contributes to home values.

And for many residents, Washington Park’s historic quality is a special bonus.

West Washington Park resident Mary Dreger has organized a historic home tour on Sept. 8, for instance, that is held through the West Washington Park Neighborhood Association and gives people the opportunity to see some of the Victorian, Queen Anne and bungalow-style homes in the area. Tickets can be purchased at the Washington Street Community Center, 809 S. Washington St., or they are available online at www.wwpna. org. Advance tickets are $15.

Bruce Morgan bought his home on South Grant Street 12 years ago. The home was built in 1900 in the Spanish Mission style.

When the house went for sale, listed at $399,000 Morgan owned a different home at East First Avenue and Grant Street. But the new home, he decided, was his dream home.

“I was a little panicked,” he said of potentially having two mortgages to pay.

As luck would have it, his First Avenue home sold in three days.

Since moving in, Morgan and his partner John Nielsen have spent five years renovating the house. As a historic home, Morgan said they had to work with the city to have renovations approved by the Landmark Preservation office, which oversees the protection of historic properties throughout Denver. The pair added a foundation to the home, bringing out 20,000 buckets of dirt in five-gallon buckets. The project attracted the attention of the community, which cheered them on.

“It was so fun just to see the whole community get interested,” he said.

Morgan and Nielsen are still working on projects around the house. Photos of the foundation and basement project line the walls of their home, celebrating their achievement.

They love their tight-knit community, which Morgan says is what makes the neighborhood feel like home: “Our block is so much fun, the people are wild and fun and caring, and it’s such a community. I’ve never had that before.”

Tim McHugh, who lives on the eastern side of Washington Park, moved to the neighborhood seven years ago when he retired as a physician. He, too, agreed people are what make a community.

McHugh and his wife frequently visited the neighborhood before moving since their daughter lives in the area as well. McHugh said he has heard a lot of concern from fellow residents about the demolition of historic homes. But for him, it’s not the homes that make the character of the neighborhood.

“The character of a neighborhood is not just those buildings,” he said. “It’s the people in those buildings.”

remained relatively stable. In fact, in some of the most popular neighborhoods in Denver, values actually went up during the recession.

Not bad.

Because of the recession and a few other factors, builders to a large extent stopped dead in their tracks and no new housing stock was added for about four years. What didn’t stop during those years was population growth.

The result was and is a housing shortage.

It is estimated that by the end of 2012 Den-

ver and the Front Range had a housing shortage of around 45,000 units. With the economy improving, builders started to jump back in, but closing that gap has proved a vexing problem because of continued growth. Builders were and are building, but the gap between supply and demand has changed little, causing steadily rising prices. In fact, prices in Denver are up nearly 50 percent since the recession ended in Denver.

Prices can only go so high until real estate

becomes out of reach for more and more prospective homebuyers. Buyers who want to, but can’t afford housing in Denver, either start looking outside the city limits for less expensive housing or they become long-term renters.

‘A little help’ preserves dignity, provides connection Local-area nonprofit lends helping hand to community seniors

After commuting from Denver to Colorado Springs for 20 years to work as a lawyer, Trent Novak and his family decided to shift to a slower pace when they moved to Observatory Park a year and a half ago. Novak, 50, transitioned to staying home to take care of his daughter.

But after spending a portion of his career as a public defender, Novak also really wanted to find a volunteer opportunity that would help serve the community.

“Service has always been a part of what I do,” he said. “It gets me out of bed in the morning.”

At Kent Denver, where his daughter attends school, he discovered A Little Help, which since 2005 has been serving the Washington Park senior community with volunteers who help with small projects around the house or drive members to appointments. The organization is now headquartered at 2755 S. Locust St. in the Hampden neighborhood.

Paul Ramsey, executive director at A Little Help, said that as many of the seniors in Colorado have aged, they have become isolated.

Some don’t have family in the area. So while the organization started as a way to give seniors help with small projects or rides, the nonprofit has evolved into a way of connecting people.

“We’ve seen the power of inter-generational connection,” he said. “The idea of a little help is more powerful than anything we do.”

The relationship works both ways.

Novak said that he doesn’t have any older family members in Colorado and that connecting back to the older generation has been a benefit to him as well.

A Little Help first started 12 years ago as Wash Park Cares. Four years later the organization was serving 40 to 50 seniors and had a crew of 70 volunteers. As the nonprofit grew, it was time to bring in a full-time executive director. Ramsey, who grew up in Washington Park, had been the pastor at Mayflower Congregational Church in Englewood for 18 years and wanted an opportunity to continue serving the south Denver community. As a child, Ramsey said he delivered newspapers to many of the people now using A Little Help.

Did Paleolithic people eat cookies?

I

spotted a “Paleo Baking” section while walking through the grocery store the other day and it made me question how the world of food has evolved.

Looking at the ingredients on a box of paleo cookie mix, I found it difficult to believe that our Paleolithic ancestors had chocolate chips, refined coconut sugar and refined flour made from coconuts.

In 1985, Boyd Eaton and Melvin Konner published an article in the New England Journal of Medicine titled “Paleolithic Nutrition”.

This article was the foundation of what has become the current Paleo Diet.

The article described what was believed to be the standard diet of our Paleolithic ancestors. It is believed that humans ate mostly plants during the first 80 percent of Paleolithic period; it was only in the last 20 percent that they became more omnivorous.

The Paleo Diet is in fashion, suggesting that what humans ate in the wild is what humans are most suited to eat today.

People in the Paleolithic period had not mastered agricultural skills, so they foraged for food. In some parts of the world, animals were more abundant than plants, while in other parts of the world plants were widely available.

able, which tells me that there was not just one specific Paleolithic diet.

Nuts versus meat Paleo Diet advocates suggest animal flesh is the most important form of protein for human nutrition. The Paleo Diet also promotes high consumption of fruits and vegetables, with moderate Paul Webster consumption of oils, nuts, and seeds.

Legumes and grains are forbidden, along with dairy and processed foods. I personally agree with many of the ideas behind the Paleo Diet, but I disagree strongly with the elimination of beans and grains, and I also disagree that animal flesh in today’s world is the best option for protein.

The healthiest and longest-lived people in the world are in locations called the Blue Zones: The common theme among people living in the Blue Zones is that they rely heavily on legumes for their daily protein, and these populations frequently eat grains. Paleo advocates state that legumes and grains contain a

high amount of harmful “anti-nutrients” called “lectins” — and they are correct.

What they fail to mention is that cooking grains and legumes eliminates the harmful lectins. The key to eating healthy grains and legumes is to eat whole grains and beans that have been properly cooked.

The meat from your local grocery store is considerably higher in saturated fat and cholesterol when compared to the wild game hunted by our ancestors. Today’s farmed meats and seafood are raised quickly, fed a diet that is not natural for the species and the animals are pumped full of antibiotics and hormones to quickly increase their growth. The FDA recently published a report stating that 80 percent of all antibiotics used in the United States are fed to farm animals. I don’t know about you, but that makes me want to avoid eating animal products.

I believe it is more important to focus on what the Paleolithic people didn’t eat: Processed foods, refined flours and sugars were non-existent in Paleolithic times. Refined oils

and fried foods were not a part of the Paleolithic diet, and fast food restaurants were not on the corner of every trail they crossed while foraging for meals. Domestication of animals hadn’t begun, so Paleolithic people didn’t drink the milk from other mammals.

The scientific evidence is apparent when you break it down, and the Paleo Diet fad of today is not as close as you might think to what our Paleolithic ancestors ate.

life,” he said.

Once he joined, Ramsey helped the organization to change the name in 2011. Since Wash Park Cares was now serving more of south Denver, Ramsey said the organization needed a name that would better highlight the organization’s dedication to all of Colorado. The name A Little Help also shows the nonprofit’s mission of helping seniors maintain independence while still connecting with the community.

“It is also who we are — we are `a little help,’ ” he said. “I really believe that our organization helps feed (their) sense of dignity and that self-sufficiency, but also connects them.”

A Little Help now serves all of Denver, as well as Englewood. More recently the non-

profit has expanded into Chafee, Larimer and Delta counties. A Little Help now relies on nearly 3,000 volunteers across the state.

Part of what interested Novak in A Little Help was the flexibility in scheduling. A Little Help puts the opportunities on its website, and volunteers can go online to find what fits in their schedule. Novak said he has done a little of everything, from house and yard work to giving people rides to appointments.

He volunteers with A Little Help anywhere from one to five times a week, depending on his schedule. Having worked with the nonprofit for more than a year, Novak said he frequently gets to work with the same members. The relationships he has built with some of the seniors in the community makes Novak believe he gets more out of the program than the people he helps.

“It’s more than just helping. It has not at all been what I expected,” he said. “Sometimes you focus on the negative that’s going on in the world, and this is a really positive thing.”

Awareness can save a life on the road

t’s the peak of summer. Everywhere you go people are on the move.

Walking, biking, driving, you name it.

But summer also means everyone needs to be more aware of their surroundings.

On Sept. 23, 2017, my then 17-yearold brother was hit by a car as he jaywalked across the street with his girlfriend to see a concert at the Fillmore. My mom had dropped him off on the way to hang out with me at my Capitol Hill apartment. By the time she drove around the corner, the car had struck him, breaking both his legs.

By the time my mom was notified by a friend, an ambulance had whisked my brother to Denver Health. The accident had destroyed his phone and he didn’t have my mom’s new number memorized.

I was glad I was still with my mom: Neither of us handled the news well.

Now, this is usually when people

ask me if the driver was drunk, or if they sped away after the accident. The answer is neither. The driver stayed with my brother until the ambulance arrived. I will be forever grateful to a stranger for that.

According to the Denver Police Department, there have been 240 crashes involving pedestrians this year.

Of those accidents, 44 had serious bodily injuries and eight were fatal.

In 67 of the accidents, the pedestrians were cited.

My brother is recovering well. He had surgery on one leg and wore a boot on the other. He is now walking and back in Aikido, a Japanese martial art.

But the event shook my whole family to the core.

I am a runner, but unlike some people in the sport, I have a lot of difficulty waking at the crack of dawn to get a few miles in. I am more of a run-after-work kind of person. The problem is that this typically puts me

outside when it’s dark, making it difficult for drivers to see me.

The Christmas after the accident, my mother not so subtly gave every one of my siblings reflective armbands in our stockings. The message was clear: If you must go out at night, make sure you can be seen. Not only do I sport the armbands during my nighttime runs, but I also invested in a very chic headlamp.

Living in Capitol Hill taught me a lot about driving and walking in Denver.

Street parking and tight alleys can make it difficult for drivers to see at the best of times. Add low light and you’ve got a potentially dangerous situation if a driver, bicyclist or pedestrian is not paying enough attention.

My brother still cannot remember pieces of the accident. Crossing the street at busy intersections, even with a crosswalk and the right-of-way, make him nervous. My brother and, likely, the driver will carry the scars of this

car accident the rest of their lives.

For me, I have been trying to be more cautious both as a driver and pedestrian.

When I’m out walking or running, I make sure I am visible. Does that mean you have to wear a bright headlamp every time you go out at night? Probably not. But wearing all black, like my brother did, and darting into the road can get you killed. Light-colored clothing items can help a driver see people better.

In the digital age, we don’t have to memorize phone numbers anymore.

But what happens when you lose the phone or, in my brother’s case, it gets destroyed? I started keeping important numbers in my wallet.

As a driver, I try to be more aware of pedestrians, particularly at intersections, and near parks and busy nightlife areas.

Skip the “isn’t it awful” — everyone knows. Get on with possible solutions!

What is it that’s awful? What can we all do to start working on improvement? Do you simply have faith that someone (else) will pull us out of “awful” government? A learned scientist?

Admirable, but we still can offer some positive action. It takes clear thinking, creativity, camaraderie. Positive outdoes negative.

I couldn’t write without coffee. I tried once, and mostly what came out was middle of the road and humorless thought, failed insights

and grievous typos.

The waiter asked how I take my coffee. I said, “Seriously, very seriously.”

The study also showed that if it takes more than three words (for example: “cream and sugar”) to order coffee, your pretension increases by 12 percent.

A friend of mine puts butter in his coffee. I put coffee in my coffee.

Income discrimination hurts housing market GUEST COLUMN

s Denver seeks to expand access to affordable homes in the face of unprecedented demand, building new affordable housing is important, but it cannot be our only strategy. We can help more families access homes that already exist. No one should be turned away from a home they can afford because they are using disability income, or a housing choice voucher, or a Veteran’s Administration (VA) loan, rather than just income derived from wages.

Banning source-of-income discrimination would help people of all incomes who may face barriers, like a college student who is utilizing student loans to rent an apartment while they attend school, or a mother who uses child support from a former spouse to help pay for housing for her and her children so they don’t have to change schools after a divorce.

To promote housing access and support mixedincome communities, my office is co-leading an effort with community partners to add source of income to Denver’s non-discrimination ordinance.

Sixty-five cities and counties and 14 states already protect against source-of-income discrimination.

First, a chorus of Bing Crosby’s “AcCent-Tchu-Ate the Positive.” As the lyrics say, “eliminate the negative … don’t mess with Mr. In-between.” That’s the guy who sits there sighing “isn’t it awful” and does nothing. Sing away!

Music, it lightens your mood, your step, your “isn’t it wonderful-ness.” Studies show the great positive effects music provides. It settles your brain and organizes it into the most positive thinking patterns and responses. It can make you think more deeply, more productively and more creatively. This is why schools should accentuate music. Learning the structure of music is basic to thinking about just about everything.

Music is eternal, friendly, inclusive and fun. Kids often say being in a music group or on a team keeps them in school. Teach-

handles. Nothing is written on them, like “World’s Greatest Dad,” or “I’m sorry for what I said before I had my coffee.”

They hold 8 ounces. I know there are larger mugs, but I never want the drink to cool off, and that’s what happens if I increase to 12 or 16.

I have a confession: There’s a microwave here in my office, just in case my coffee does cool off. I can’t have that.

If someone serves me a cool cup of coffee, it makes me boiling mad. Forget about breakfast: Coffee is the most important meal of the day.

If you don’t like coffee or you can’t drink coffee, I understand. But if I found out that my wife didn’t drink coffee, it would be grounds for a divorce.

Locally, about 12 percent of the roughly 6,000 voucher holders in Denver cannot find housing in our city and have to move to other counties, sometimes further away from jobs, child care and family support networks. A recent survey found that 39 percent of Section 8 voucher holders reported being turned away from housing because of their voucher.

Those receiving disability benefits also reported their source of income as a barrier to securing housing.

Landlords can still look at past rental history, such as whether tenants have paid their rent on time. While these are important and legitimate ways landlords have to screen tenants, it should not matter where a tenants’ source of verifiable income is coming from. In many cases, long-standing retirement, veteran or disability benefits may be even more reliable than employment, which can be terminated without notice.

The goal of any non-discrimination policy is to prevent the discrimination, not to punish people.

If it passes, implementation would be delayed until Jan. 1, 2019 to allow for robust education of both landlords and people looking for homes. Our office is also committed to exploring ways to help stream-

ers who incorporate music into classes find it helps students learn the subject.

Preachers know the importance of music — the great classics for their emotional depth, the simpler songs for their simplicity.

Our founding fathers knew that people coming together to solve issues, make decisions, benefitted from some singing — bringing people together, getting the brain going and smiling! A quick warmup of “Yankee Doodle.”

The ancient Greeks had the idea. Their string theory connected the universe with the world as one harmonious entity.

Perhaps that’s a path for peace. Park Hill’s One World Singers have that belief. Music is shared by all people, from the first who imitated a birdsong long ago.

How harmonious the world, or even the present scene here and now, might be! We needn’t burst into song at the bang of a gavel — though wouldn’t that be something. But you might find a group with whom to sing or play an instrument, or dance or go to a play, to read and write

My coffee maker is top of the line. It has a lot of perks.

After a couple cups of coffee, I hop.

Next year, someone will say the opposite: “Drinking two to three cups of coffee shortens your life by 12 percent.”

My longevity will be right back where it started from.

But for now, I feel good about my favorite beverage.

“Coffee drinking can be part of a healthy diet,” the report says.

Around here, it’s the Soup of the Day. Remember that other old song?

“So let’s have another cup of coffee, and let’s have another cup of coffee.”

I guess you could say I’m well grounded.

Denver has a strong interest in the stability of households.

We lose talent and a work force when people can’t live here. Children get disrupted when their families cannot find a place to live. Homelessness can occur if there is a gap between losing a home and finding a new one. In addition to the negative impacts on families, there can be public costs to these kinds of displacement, whether it is providing emergency shelter, additional social services, etc.

Expanding access to existing housing is good for our economy, and it’s good for our communities and the stability of our schools.

The proposed ordinance will be working its way through Council committee in July and could be voted on by the full council by early August.

Denver Animal Protection caught 66 skunks in south Denver that tested positive for rabies.

South Denver sees spike in rabies cases Animals having difficulty walking can be a symptom of disease Staff report An uptick of rabies cases has Denver Animal Protection keeping a close eye on skunks in Denver. In 2018, Denver Animal protection has picked up 66 skunks in south Denver that tested positive for rabies. Last year only 12 skunks tested positive for rabies across the city.

Sgt. Joshua Rolfe with Denver Animal Protection has been with the department since 2010. The number of cases is the highest in recent memory, he said, but some of that may be due to a change in how animals are processed.

For the first time, Denver Animal Protection sent every case of rabies back to a lab for testing this year, whether it had contact with humans or not, Rolfe said.

“We respond out to any sick and injured wildlife in this city, and then the biggest deciding (factor) on whether or not we feel it’s serious is whether it’s had contact with people or domestic animals,” he said.

Outbreaks of rabies tend to happen in cycles, Rolfe said. He estimated that animals tend to contract the disease in larger numbers every few years.

“Statewide, it’s usually localized to some sort of geographical area,” he said.

Animals that have contracted rabies will stumble around like a “walking seizure,” Rolfe said. If an animal falls over and has difficulty standing back up, it could be a sign of rabies.

As the disease progresses so will the animal’s symptoms.

“The foaming at the mouth certainly is an indicator it’s usually late-stage rabies,” Rolfe said.

Animals start as disoriented and then tend to become more aggressive as their rabies progresses.

People should report animals acting strangely to 311. Denver Animal Protection

SYMPTOMS OF RABIES In animals, rabies is typically fatal, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The first symptoms of the disease include vomitting and animals acting sluggish.

As the disease progresses, animals become more aggresive.

Here are some other signs to look for from the CDC: • Excessive salivation • Seizures • Paralysis • Difficulty breathing or swallowing • Self-mutilation Report animals acting strangely to 311. Denver Animal Protection will then go and investigate. will then go and investigate. Rolfe added that people should not interact with the animal, and should keep pets and children away from them.

“Feed your pets indoors. Don’t lay out food and leave it all day because that will attract wildlife into the area.”

While most of the affected wildlife has been skunks, Rolfe said animal protection officers have seen a few raccoons that have contracted rabies as well. To avoid contact with raccoons, he said people need to make sure garbage cans are tightly sealed.

If people or pets do come into contact with a sick animal, Rolfe said it is better not to take any chances.

“Even if there’s suspected contact with a wild animal or an animal that may have rabies, follow up with your primary care physician right away,” he said.

A post-exposure vaccine for humans does exist, he said.

City announces plan to reduce food waste and trash

In a large warehouse in north Denver, We Don’t Waste has packed pallets of tomatoes, spicy peppers, cookies and more into its storage facility. Last year, the organization helped to provide about 30 million meals throughout the Denver-metro area.

The company has come a long way since 2009 when founder and executive director Arlan Preblud brought leftover food to nonprofits out of his own car.

“I only had the car, and after about three months knowing the volume of food that I was picking up I knew that the next step had to be some other form of transportation,” he said. “One thing led to another, and that led to something else, and pretty soon we needed a truck.”

The nonprofit receives leftover food from professional sporting events and caterers or rejected food from grocery stores. We Don’t Waste then works with more than 60 organizations across the Denver-metro area to provide food to other nonprofits, churches and schools, keeping those items out of landfills.

At South High School it was determined many students came from food-insecure families. Food for Thought, another food-based nonprofit, brings in shelf-stable food to the food bank at the school. The organization works with 20 schools around the state to bring in sacks of non-perishable foods for kids to take home.

Until recently, South High did not have a refrigerated space for dairy, produce or proteins.

Once a refrigerated space was added, We Don’t Waste started bringing perishable items to South on Fridays. The need for fresh food is growing in Denver schools, Preblud said. We Don’t Waste and Food for Thought are expanding their food bank program to West High School in the Lincoln Park neighborhood in September. He added that the nonprofit will follow Food for Thought to other schools.

“We’ll stop at South and then we’ll stop at West, and when they go to Manual we’ll stop at Manual, and when they go to East we’ll do the same,” he said.

“People have this perception that it’s only the elementary and the middle schools that have this problem. It’s high school kids, it’s college kids that have problems with food insecurity.”

We Don’t Waste moved into its warehouse at 5971 Broadway in November last year. The warehouse has room for dozens of pallets of food and has a refrigerated area for perishable items. Before, the nonprofit had to take donated food to its partner nonprofits immediately since it didn’t have storage space. The nonprofit also has three trucks to deliver the food around the state.

At the end of June, the city of Denver announced a new Food Action Plan to tackle some of the food waste and insecurity issues here. The city’s Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) worked with organizations like We Don’t Waste to help educate restaurants and other businesses on food donation.

The plan is focused on reducing food waste and finding ways to get unused foods into the hands

of food-insecure populations within the city. The city is aiming to lower the number of food-insecure households by 55 percent and cut food waste by 57 percent by 2030.

Restaurant waste is one of the first areas the city wanted to tackle.

Tristan Sanders, the public health program manager with DDPHE, said the city created new pamphlets on food storage to help restaurants safely store leftover food that could be donated to organizations like We Don’t Waste.

“Many restaurants don’t donate food because they think they’re going to get in trouble,” he said.

To create the Food Action Plan, the city partnered with the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Rockefeller Foundation. Studies from the NRDC showed that about 4.2 pounds of trash per person is thrown out in a week in Denver.

Of that, more than three pounds is edible food.

Perishable items make up a majority of what people throw away.

Maddie Keating, Denver city lead with the NRDC Food Matters Project, said a majority of the items thrown out are perishable from people buying more than

they need or can consume from the grocery store.

“We’re not talking about bread and products that aren’t going to provide nutritional benefits. We want to make sure that proteins and produce are being rescued,” she said. “We need to find ways to get these vast amounts of wasted food to our most vulnerable residents.”

The organization helped to provide Denver with statistics and expertise that helped inform the action plan. The NRDC also found that one in six adults are food insecure in Denver. For children, the ratio is slightly higher at one in five.

Population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau said the city of Denver had more than 700,000 people in July 2017. This means more than 110,000 adults don’t know where their next meal may be coming from.

“It’s significant,” she said. “For people that might not be that invested in this issue, when you draw the connection between how much good food is ending up in our landfills … and then you equate that to the fact that your neighbors might not know where their next meal is coming from, that’s pretty significant.”

As Denver continues to grow and change, so will the taste buds of its residents. New restaurants continue to flood the scene, and mobile competition from food trucks brings in more and more choices for Denver foodies.

South Denver has become a draw for exotic flavors, such as Mehak India’s Aroma, which opened last year in Cherry Creek. Bon Ami French Bistro and Creperie recently took over the space at 295 S. Pennsylvania St. The menu includes classic French cuisine items like escargot and beef bourguignon.

Old staples continue to thrive as well.

In the 1960s, the Mobells bought the Blue Bonnet in the Baker neighborhood.

For the last 50 years the family has been

running the authentic Mexican restaurant on South Broadway.

South Pearl Street may have lost the 16-year-old Village Cork restaurant, but the owners aren’t slowing down. The Lapps recently opened the SoDo Village Market at 2395 S. Downing St., near Harvard Gulch West Park. The business sells organic produce, meat, seafood and cheeses and opened in June.

As food halls take over north Denver with places like the new Milk Market downtown, and Zeppelin Station and Denver Central Market in River North, the south side of the city hasn’t caught on to that trend just yet. But food trucks continue to shake up the market, giving Denverites access to Argentinian, Ethiopian, Italian and more — all on wheels.

‘Small and intimate’ school spreads wings in Denver The bigger space near Cherry Creek will allow Rock Solid Christian Academy to grow

After setting up and taking down classrooms on a weekly basis for more than 20 years, Rock Solid Christian Academy — a University Model school — is headed to a permanent home near the Cherry Creek Shopping Center.

The University Model is a nationwide Christian-based curriuculum that helps prepare students for four-year college programs. According to the University Model Schools International website, Rock Solid is the only school in Denver using the system.

Rock Solid, which has 65 students enrolled for the upcoming 2018-19 school year, was previously located in Littleton at South Fellowship Church. Because the Littleton church had other programming, Rock Solid was unable to keep classrooms in place permanently. Instead, teachers would take down materials every week. The church had also decided to expand its preschool program, which meant Rock Solid had to move.

Cecilia Gibbs, assistant principal of the school, said the new location is four-times the size of their old space. Citypoint also has a gym and soccer field students can use.

At South Fellowship, teachers were unable

to personalize classrooms, since they had to break down their space every week.

“Teachers can settle in, they can make the rooms their own. I think everybody’s going to feel a lot more settled,” Gibbs said. “In our other building we just had no room for growth — we were at max.”

Moving into the new space also allowed Rock Solid to expand its programming, adding kindergarten through fifth-grade classes. The first elementary students will

start this fall. Gibbs said the school had a lot of interest in elementary classes from families with younger children, but it didn’t have room in the old building.

Under the University Model, students in middle school and high school attend classes three days a week, while the new elementary classes will only go for two days.

The model is meant to prepare students for college schedules. The school year starts on Aug. 14 for middle and high school students, with elementary classes starting on Sept. 5.

In addition to helping students prepare for college schedules, the three-day class schedule allows them to spend more time with their families.

Teachers also like the schedule.

Owen McCann said it allowed for him to go back to school to get his master’s degree.

He will graduate with a master’s in divinity from the Denver Seminary next year.

The school, which has a 15-1 studentteacher ratio, offers math, language and science classes, as well as electives and spiritual classes on the Bible.

“We think being small and intimate is part of what makes us special,” Principal Rhonda Elliott said.

Chloe Prewitt, who will be a senior this year, said the small classes allowed for students to bond with their teachers.

“The staff and the teachers all want to help us with school, but they also want to help us on a personal level,” she said. “The staff really encourages us in our spiritual walk too.”

Summer construction on I-70 moves forward Eastbound commutes and trips to DIA may be impacted by the project Staff report A proposal for construction on Interstate-70 has been delayed until August, but the Colorado Department of Transportation and Kiewit Meridiam Partners plan to move forward with other aspects of the project.

The construction project includes a 10-mile stretch of I-70 from Brighton Boulevard to Chambers Road.

This summer, the companies will launch construction with utility relocation. Both CenturyLink and Xcel Energy will move 10 miles worth of power transmission and long-haul fibers. Kiewit Meridiam will move 20 miles worth of storm sewer pipes and three miles of water lines and sanitary sewers. During this phase, 46th Avenue between Brighton Boulevard and York Street will be permanently closed.

As of now, it is the only full-road closure planned during construction.

While neighborhood streets are under

construction, CDOT officials are recommending drivers use the highway as much as possible.

Kiewit Meridiam had initially hoped to have a nighttime construction schedule for work on I-70, saying it would speed up the project.

However, residents of the area voiced concerns about pollution and noise.

The company had intended to present a proposal during the July 12 Denver Board of Public Health and Environment meeting, but decided to postpone it until August.

The meeting will be held on Aug. 9 in the community room of the animal shelter at 1241 W. Bayaud Ave. The biggest portion of the project will take out the 54-year-old viaduct, lowering the interstate from Brighton to Colorado boulevards.

Neighborhood crossroads that originally passed under the viaduct will be replaced above the highway along with a new 4-acre park. CDOT anticipates the construction will continue through 2022.

CDOT will also be adding an express lane in each direction on the interstate.

‘Pink Progression’ exhibition pays tribute to Women’s March Center for Visual Art display will continue into August on Santa Fe Drive

Turn right as you enter the Center for Visual Art on Santa Fe Drive and admire the sleek pink “Ourobouros,” a huge pink snake, circling to bite its tail, by Emma Hardy and Rebecca DiDomenico.

It hangs in the gallery window and in a way, speaks for the entire “Pink Progression” exhibit. It is these two artists’ version of an ancient symbol for cyclicality, recreation of self …

“Pink Progression” was inspired by — and celebrates — the two recent Women’s Marches, 2017 and 2018, and is said to “address concepts of human rights, gender, sexual identity, feminism and inclusivity.”

More than 50 artists explore social interactions in at least 50 different ways — in paintings, prints, sculpture, drawings, ceramics, video and combinations of techniques, large and small … A visitor becomes fascinated and thoroughly engaged by the many ways of seeing, feeling.

The CVA credits local artist Anna Kaye with organizing this large show, which has visited the Boulder Public Library and Denver Public Library prior to its position at the CVA, through Aug. 19. Art lovers will almost all find something that impresses them on a visit to this varied exhibit, tied together by color and focus. (And no doubt, something that fails to impress, given the wide range of style and technique!) Many works are loaned by the gallery that represents an artist.

Each artwork has a message or a question or a vision.

At the far end of the gallery is Trine Bumiller’s floor-to-ceiling “Monumental,” consisting of 128 panels, painted in oils. Each depicts a national monument, “created to honor and

protect places of cultural, environmental and cultural importance,” and each incorporates pink. “The pink hues represent all phases of feminism,” Bumiller writes, “from baby blush and sexy hot pinks to reds of passion, rage and love.” We see landscapes, buildings, plants, figures and much more …

Katie Caron of Littleton, Arapahoe Community College Ceramic Department chair, collaborated with Marie Perrin-McGraw to craft “Untitled (Shadow Box),” and Sue Simon of Englewood exhibits a large painting, “I Am,” subtitled “DNA Sequence,” in the back right gallery. Simon says “My paintings combine abstraction with science and mathematics — scientific concepts developed from real scientific research. They describe our new understanding of the universe. Paintings are based on combining the elegance of science and the visual richness of art.”

Across from Simon’s work, appropriately situated with a place to sit and look — and ponder — for an extended time, is Laleh Mehran’s electronic “Tenuous Hierarchy 1, 10, 100.” A black frame surrounds a screen with constant movement of patterns, accompanied by soft sound. It “explores power across global borders by collocating topography from one country to currency of another. These combinations of foreign structures examine the control and impact of money on sociopolitical infrastructures.” Readers may recall Mehran’s stunning installation in 2012 at the Denver Art Museum: “Men of God, Men of Nature.” She is on the University of Denver faculty.

Julia Rymer of Littleton exhibits four panels: “Light at St. James.” She also works at the intersection of art and science. “Through art, I uncover the beauty of the natural world,” she wrote, “from a cell to an orbiting planet to a tree shedding leaves …”

An Aug. 4 workshop is planned: “Re-thinking the Pinking,’ with exhibit artists Steven Frost and Frankie Toan, from noon to 3 p.m.

The hands-on workshop and discussion will address the symbolism of the iconic pink hat of the Women’s March and generate new concepts for more inclusive symbolism. Who does the hat represent/exclude? How should we consider a more inclusive symbolism in activism? Participants will be encouraged to design alternative hats that reflect each participant’s own voice in contemplating feminist activism.

The rear gallery holds a related student exhibit called “Reclamation.”

Colfax Museum houses ‘endless stream of history’ Rising costs force museum to roll down the road to Lakewood

Jonny Barber was long a fan of members of the beat generation — figures like Jack Kerouac who changed American culture in the postwar years. And when many of these figures came to the Denver area, they spent their time on Colfax.

“I love a good story, and Colfax is just an endless stream of history and stories that you can’t make up,” Barber said. “That is part of what inspired me to start the Colfax Avenue website and collecting things from the street’s past.”

Over the years, Barber’s collection of memorabilia, signs and history grew so large that it spilled over from his basement and he

Originally located in a small space at the Ed Moore Florist shop on East Colfax Avenue, a recent change in landlords and the increased costs of the metro area caused Barber to look for a new home.

What better place than West Colfax?

The museum is in the process of making a new home at 6851 W. Colfax Ave. in a space previously used by the Pasternack Pawn Shop.

“We’re really excited about the museum

coming to 40 West Arts,” said Bill Marino, executive director of the Lakewood West Colfax Business Improvement District, and board chair of 40 West Arts. “We’re going to work hard with Jonny to grow the museum and make it an iconic destination here on West Colfax.”

The museum’s relocation to the former pawn shop’s location is part of an effort by property owner Scott Pasternack to turn the building into the Pasternack’s 40 West Arts Hub. The NEXT Gallery, which serves as an artist cooperative, move to the building in late April 2017, and Pasternack is remodeling the building to house more gallery and studio space, as well as stages for live music and even a classic car or two.

“Denver is changing and it costs too much money to operate there,” Pasternack said.

“Here in Lakewood, we want these kinds of creative businesses to come.”

Barber is still getting the museum off the ground at its new location and is so dedicated to the project that he’s opened up a temporary pawn shop selling some of his own collectibles

in its future location to raise the necessary funds to get things off the ground. The aim is to have the museum open by autumn.

The change in location for the museum is part of a long-running trend on Colfax — where there once was bright neon and thriving businesses, some parts of the avenue have taken significant hits over the years.

But things are changing.

“You see families spending time on Colfax now and that used to never be the case,” Barber said. “It’s a beautiful street with an amazing history, story and culture. I hope people who know it now will come to the museum and see it in a new way.”

For people like Marino and the organizations he works with who have been striving to bring West Colfax back to life, the relocation of the museum is another affirmation that Lakewood’s most famous street is on the upswing.

“It’s a really exciting time to bring this kind of pop culture and historical facility to West Colfax,” Marino said. “This museum, just like Colfax, is quintessentially Colorado.”

WHAT IS THE TANGO? Argentine tango developed in the 1800s in Buenos Aires. The dance style was influenced by regions from around the world. People dance the tango in pairs, either in a closed or open embrace.

Close embrace dancers lean together, often touching heads.

One partner leads the other across the floor in a clockwise fashion, often improvising to the music. Followers rarely have weight on both their feet at the same time. John Gardner, the president of Tango Colorado, said the dance is similar to walking.

s a dancer stands on the floor at the Denver Turnverein, a look and a small nod is all it takes to find a partner for the milonga —an open floor for Argentine tango dancers.

At Tango Colorado, dancers take to the floor on Tuesday nights, looping in pairs across the dance floor.

The milonga, dancer Rose Vehill Dale noted, is as much an opportunity to dance as it is to observe other people on the floor.

“If you don’t feel like dancing a lot,” she said, “it’s so great to just watch.”

Vehill Dale is one of the many dancers who take advantage of the Tuesday-night tango lessons at the Turnverein, a historic building in Uptown that has transformed into a dancing mecca, welcoming dancers of all styles — swing, ballroom, Zumba, the Argentine tango and more — every night of the week.

Tango Colorado, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the Argentinan style of dancing, hosts milonga nights every Tuesday at the Denver Turnvererin, 1570 Clarkson St. The milonga is an open dance floor, where people dance in pairs, moving clockwise.

Before the milonga, hour-long tango lessons are offered for $10, starting at 6:45 p.m. There are two levels of beginning classes and an intermediate class. The fee also includes the open floor time — for novice and master dancers alike — which starts at 7:45 p.m. and goes until 10:30 p.m. Dancers pay $10 at the door for the milonga on its own.

Tango Colorado also offers classes at the Mercury Cafe in Five Points at 2199 California St. and in Boulder and Colorado Springs.

On Memorial and Labor Day holidays, Tango Colorado has a free lesson and milonga session at the Pavilion in Cheesman Park, at 1900 E. 11th Ave. The lesson starts at 5 p.m., with the milonga following at 6 p.m.

Tango depends on the connection between dance partners. This pair danced together during an intermediate lesson at Tango Colorado.

2011 to participate in one of Tango Colorado’s bi-annual tango events at the Pavilion in Cheesman Park. She is now treasurer of Tango Colorado, and owns her own CPA firm. Jorge works as a software developer.

The pair met in Dallas when Jorge was in town on a business trip and he decided to visit the local tango venue there. Xiaoli and Jorge have traveled the world performing tango, but said the community here is more diverse and tight-knit than in other places.

Jorge grew up dancing tango in his native Peru, but has been dancing in Colorado for 10 years. At Tango Colorado, he said the community is small, but it makes sure that everyone is welcome.

“As soon as a new person comes we get to know each other,” he said. “Tango is just a tool for the social aspect.”

Vehill Dale didn’t expect to become entrenched in tango when she joined a class at Tango Colorado five years ago. Her goal then was to learn more about partner dancing for her ballroom classes. But all it took was one class, she said, and she was hooked.

“You go and the music takes you to a different place,” she said. “You blend into it, you melt into it and you’re just in a different place.”

Tango has a lead and a follower.

Leads direct followers across the floor as each partner switches his or her balance from one leg to the other.

Tango Colorado holds its Tuesday night lessons in the Denver Turnverein in Uptown. The building is more than 150 years old and different organizations offer various dance classes for every day of the week.

THE ART OF THE SHOE The fashion behind Argentine tango is an imporant element to the dance. Xiaoli Quispe, treasurer of Tango Colorado and longtime dancer, said that not only are the shoes beautiful, they also serve a purpose on the dance floor.

“It’s well designed for the woman to be completely on the ball of her foot,” she said.

“Every pair is a work of art.”

Most shoes are imported into the United States, Quispe said. Many are also handmade and can be an expensive investment because of that. JuliaBella, a Virginiabased shoe store, sells tango shoes made in Argentina. Pairs there range from $135 to $230. Dancers must do a lot of research on shoes beforehand to ensure they are getting a shoe that properly fits while dancing.

Literacy resources, online portals help prepare for school Staff Report The 2018-2019 school year is around the corner — the start date for most schools in the district is Aug. 20.

With that in mind, Denver Public Schools has highlighted some important resources and new initiatives for students and parents: New graduation requirements New graduation requirements, which start with the Class of 2021, are less about grades earned for time spent in a classroom and more about students demonstrating they are prepared for the world after high school. To earn a DPS diploma, students will be expected to complete three components: ICAP,what is this? coursework and competency. Newcomer centers for families new to the United States Newcomer centers are designed for students who are new to the United States, have a history of limited or interrupted education and have minimal literacy skills in their native language and English. Newcomer Center students receive English instruction that focuses on listening, speaking, reading and writing improvement with low student-adult ratios and state-of-the-art computer systems.

Large-scale community dialogue Three years into the Denver Plan, and with

The board intends for the engagement to be a sustained effort over multiple months, with opportunities for reflection in between various stages of the process. ‘Serving as DPS’ leader has been the honor of a lifetime for me’ Tom Boasberg steps down as DPS superintendent; AmeriCorps program is terminated

Boasberg will stay on for three months Tom Boasberg announced last month that he was stepping down as superintendent of Denver Public Schools. He was unanimously voted in by the Board of Education to take over the position in 2009.

He replaced Michael Bennet, who departed after a successBoasberg ful run for U.S. Senator.

“Serving as DPS’ leader has been the honor of a lifetime for me,” he said in a letter to the DPS community. “Spending time in classrooms, meeting with students and collaborating with teachers, school leaders and district leaders have brought me great joy and given me great hope.”

Boasberg will remain in the position for three months while the Board of Education finds a replacement. Boasberg said he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Leaders from across Colorado applauded Boasberg for the progress the district made under his tenure.

Summer Academy serves record number of students DPS offers a free Summer Academy for students looking to maintain their academic progress. The program offers half days over the summer for individualized instruction and activities. This year, the program had its largest enrollment with 5,300 students.

The program is also a benefit for students in

grades K-8 whose second language is English to develop literacy skills, a press release from DPS said.

DPS AmeriCorps program terminated In late June, Serve Colorado terminated the AmeriCorps program with DPS after finding it did not operate within the grant requirements, according to a news release from the district.

Serve Colorado found the district was enrolling current employees, which violated the AmeriCorps grant requirement, the news release said. People recruited for the AmeriCorp position are supposed to work set hours for the district, plus additional hours for the program.

The Serve Colorado investigation found that with current DPS employees some of those hours overlapped.

The investigation was announced in May, and DPS put the AmeriCorps program on hold.

DPS is paying back all of the costs associated with the program to the Corporation for National and Community Service, totaling $200,000. The district is also continuing to pay tuition assistance and living

stipends to the 435 employees it brought in for the AmeriCorps program.

This will cost the district an additional $1 million to $1.8 million over the next seven years.

U.S. approves pot-based drug to treat rare seizures Epidiolex is purified, predictable form of variable ‘CBD’ product

U.S. health regulators have approved the first prescription drug made from marijuana, a milestone that could spur more research into a drug that remains illegal under federal law, despite growing legalization for recreational and medical use.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the medication, called Epidiolex, to treat two rare forms of epilepsy that begin in childhood. But it’s not quite medical marijuana.

The strawberry-flavored syrup is a purified form of a chemical ingredient found in the cannabis plant — but not the one that gets users high. It’s not yet clear why the ingredient, called cannabidiol, or CBD, reduces seizures in some people with epilepsy.

British drugmaker GW Pharmaceuticals studied the drug in more than 500 children and adults with hard-to-treat seizures, overcoming numerous legal hurdles that have long stymied research into cannabis.

FDA officials said the drug reduced seizures when combined with older epilepsy drugs.

for medical use, including severe weight loss in patients with HIV. Epidiolex is essentially a pharmaceuticalgrade version CBD oil, which some parents already use to treat children with epilepsy.

CBD is one of more than 100 chemicals found in marijuana. But it doesn’t contain THC, the ingredient that gives marijuana its mind-altering effect.

Physicians say it’s important to have a consistent, government-regulated version.

“I’m really happy we have a product that will be much cleaner and one that I know what it is,” said Dr. Ellaine Wirrell, director of the Mayo Clinic’s program for childhood epilepsy. “In the artisanal products there’s often a huge variation in doses from bottle to bottle depending on where you get it.”

Side effects with the drug include diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue and sleep problems.

Several years ago, Allison Hendershot considered relocating her family to Colorado, one of the first states to legalize marijuana and home to a large network of CBD producers and providers. Her 13-year-old daughter, Molly, has suffered from severe seizures since she was 4 months old. But then Hendershot learned about a trial of Epidiolex at New York University.

“I preferred this to some of those other options because it’s is a commercial product that has gone through rigorous testing,” said Hendershot, who lives in Rochester, New York.

Since receiving Epidiolex, Hendershot says her daughter has been able to concentrate more and has had fewer “drop” seizures — in which her entire body goes limp and collapses.

CBD oil is currently sold online and in specialty shops across the U.S., though its legal status remains murky. Most producers say their oil is made from hemp, a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant that contains little THC and can be legally farmed in a number of states for clothing, food and other uses.

The immediate impact of the June 25 approval on these products is unclear.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb suggested the agency would be scrutinizing CBD products with “uncertain dosages and formulations.”

“We are prepared to take action when we see the illegal marketing of CBD-containing products with serious, unproven medical claims,” Gottlieb said in a statement.

The FDA previously issued warnings to CBD producers that claimed their products could treat specific diseases, such as cancer or Alzheimer’s. Only products that have received formal FDA approval can make such claims, typically requiring clinical trials costing millions.

Most CBD producers sidestep the issue by making only broad claims about general health and well-being.

Industry supporters downplayed the impact of the FDA approval.

“I don’t know a mom or dad in their right mind who is going to change what’s already working,” said Heather Jackson, CEO of Realm of Caring, a charitable group affiliated with Colorado-based CW Hemp, one of nation’s largest CBD companies. “I really don’t think it’s going to affect us much.”

Jackson’s group estimates the typical family using CBD to treat childhood epilepsy spends about $1,800 per year on the substance.

A GW Pharmaceuticals spokeswoman said the company would not immediately announce a price for the drug, which it expects to launch in the fall.

Wall Street analysts have previously predicted it could cost $25,000 per year, with annual sales eventually reaching $1 billion.

Game’s reach goes beyond beach Those wanting to play volleyball in the sand find opportunities in Denver metro area

Shelly Leuenberger temporarily left her love of playing beach volleyball behind when she moved with her family from California to Colorado.

However, the Parker resident is playing volleyball again in the sand in landlocked Colorado after finding The Island, a beach volleyball facility in southeast Denver.

“There’s no beaches here,” said Leuenberger.

“I’m from Hermosa Beach where beach volleyball is major league. I used to play at the beach all the time.

“When I moved here 3 1/2 years ago, I gave up the sport and then I found this place. It’s is a little bit different than at the beach but it makes me feel good that I’m back into it.”

Beach volleyball is booming around the Denver area, with sand courts at bars, clubs and parks.

The Island, 2233 S.Geneva St., has six indoor sand courts, two outside and plans are to add six more outdoor courts.

Tom Davenport is the owner and he also owns The Oasis at 2400 W. Midway Blvd. in Broomfield. The Oasis has seven indoor and three outdoor beach volleyball courts.

There are leagues at both locations with six-on-six competition, four-on-four and the popular two-on-two doubles that is seen on television and at the Olympics.

There is no ocean, sea or bay around the sand courts in Colorado and players don’t have to worry about elements like the wind off the shore.

“What is different than an actual beach is the sand is fluffier and deeper,” said Leuenberger.

“The sand is more shallow here and that’s the only difference.”

Sand in Colorado is sometimes called “jumpers sand” because the sand on the genuine beaches is deeper, which makes in harder to jump.

Players can participate in a variety of beach volleyball games at The Island in Denver.

The popularity of beach volleyball is at least partially because of the inclusivity of the sport.

“I found is it is a game that lends itself to coed participation,” said Davenport. “You can play with men and women on a court. It’s a relatively level playing field.”

And all players are involved.

“It has a high degree of immediate gratification,” Davenport said. “Every time the ball comes over the net, especially in doubles beach volleyball, you get to touch it, you get to pass it, set it or hit it. Every point, every play, you are involved.

“In golf, you get to hit the ball 100 times around the golf course and you can be either a hero or goat. Volleyball has that same addiction component because of the gratification.”

There are some unwritten rules involved the culture at The Island. For instance, a guy never blocks a lady.

“There is a volleyball etiquette you have to know here because some people don’t follow it and they don’t last long,” said Adam Wiedel, of Castle Rock. “People start getting on their cases.”

Wiedel lists several reasons people keep playing beach volleyball.

“Some people like the competitiveness and some like the sport, some people like the accomplishment, some like to have the beer and some like to have good friends,” he said. “It is whatever drives them to have fun that keeps them coming back.”

Gina Engbarth of Centennial plays 20 hours a week.

“It is not surprising anymore to play beach volleyball in Colorado,” she said. “Tom (Davenport) has done so much for beach volleyball in Denver.

are so many people involved in the sport but, yeah, I think it will continue to grow here in Colorado and across the U.S.” Kris Bredehoft of Englewood is a player and coach.

“The sport is definitely big here,” she said.

“Girls are solely going for beach scholarships now, where they used to go for hard court.

There are a lot of the same principles but it is a hard transition from hard court to beach.

“In hard court, players specialize in a position. In beach, you play every position. It makes you more versatile.”

Women’s beach volleyball is recognized as an emerging sport by the NCAA with 93 schools, including 54 in Division I, having varsity teams.

Colorado Mesa, a Division II school in Grand Junction, is the only college in Colorado to have a team but several other schools are considering adding the sport.
