BUSINESS OPENINGS Ku Cha House of Tea Ku Cha House of Tea opened a third location in Cherry Creek in May. The business offers ore than 100 types of tea, most sold in bags after the loose tea is packed by employees.

The first Ku Cha opened in Boulder in 2005. A second location was later opened in Fort Collins. The third location is at 2445 E. Third Ave. In addition to selling tea, Ku Cha offers tea demonstrations and cultural events.

Voodoo Doughnuts The second Denver location for Voodoo Doughnut opened at 98 S. Broadway on June 16. The shop replaced Famous Pizza, which closed in August last year. The Portland, Oregon-based company first came to Denver in 2014 on Colfax Avenue.

“We are happy to bring everything from Bacon Maple Bars to Vegan Doughnuts to a new area of town,” said co-founder Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson in a news release from

Cherish Spirits Lounge Cherish Spirits Lounge opened in Cherry Creek at the end of May. The bar offers 125 kinds of liquor. In addition to drinks, Cherish offers shared plates and a small food menu. The bar is at 221 Detroit St. Flower Child Flower Child, a Phoenix-based restaurant, is opening in the Cherry Creek Shopping Center at 3110 E. First Ave early next year. It will go into the same building as the Macy’s Furniture Gallery and The Container Store.

It will be a second location for the restaurant in Colorado. Flower Child also has a location in Boulder. The restaurant caters to people with different dietary restrictions, such as dairy free and vegetarians.

Serene Cuisine of India Suman Roy, formerly of Little India, has opened a new Indian food restaurant near the University of Denver. Roy is one of four co-owners of the restaurant. Serene Cuisine of India opened at 2070 S. University Blvd. It opened in mid-June.

The restaurant offers traditional Indian cuisine, which involves fresh ingredients and dishes made from scratch, according to the website.

Serene replaced Four Friends Kitchen, which closed earlier this year.

Rocky Yama Sushi Rocky Yama Sushi is set to open this month on Santa Fe Drive, replacing iSushi. The restaurant will be at 801 Santa Fe Drive where Isushi closed late last year. The restaurant will offer both dine-in and delivery options.

nue and Colorado Boulevard. The development is scheduled to open this November. Frank & Roze will be located at 4097 E. Ninth Ave. Tom Coohill, the chef behind the French restaurant Coohills, will put together the menu for Frank & Roze. In addition to coffee, the cafe will offer beer and wine.

Several other restaurants, such as Pizzeria Locale, Chuy’s, Gelato Boy, Culinary Dropout and Blanco Tacos & Tequila, were also recently announced as part of the new development.

TruFusion Gym has also announced a location at the development. It will be the first TruFusion location in Denver.

CLOSINGS Honey Pot Lounge Honey Pot Lounge operated in the former Vape and Play space at 1753 S. Broadway after the latter abruptly closed at the end of February.

But in May, Honey Pot also closed.

Vape and Play still holds the lease on the location,and worked with owners of the Honey Pot to operate a social marijuana consumption business there.

CHANGES Session Coffee Session Coffee is opening a second location in the lobby of Porter Adventist Hospital at 2525 S. Downing St. The first location is based in the Overland neighborhood at 1340 S. Santa Fe Drive.

Pearl Wine Company Pearl Wine Company joined forces with Culture Meat and Cheese last month. Pearl Wine will now offer a selection of cheeses and charcuterie from Culture in its store at 1886 S. Pearl St. Culture is inside the Denver Central Market food hall in the River North neighborhood.

City makes ‘lucky’ deal for new U Hills park Acquisition is first time money from 2A will be used

After searching for land for five years, the city is one step closer to a new park for the University Hills neighborhood.

Nestled just three blocks east of Colorado Boulevard in a quieter residential area is the Groundcovers Greenhouse and Garden Center. The city approached store owner Gary Luster with an offer to buy the land.

“As many of you have heard, our property is being purchased by the city of Denver and will be turned into a park within a couple of years,” the Groundcover website reads. “We currently anticipate the store will close permanently sometime in late summer. Thank you for all the wonderful years!”

The store sits on just over two acres of valuable real estate at 4301 E. Iliff Ave. In May, city council approved a deal for the city to buy the land there, as well as an adjacent building that is also part of Groundcovers at 4307 E. Iliff Ave., for $5.1 million using tax revenue from measure 2A. Voters approved the measure on the November ballot. It added a .25 percent

With the boom of development around the major street, finding land for a much-needed park has been difficult, said Gordon Robertson,

director of planning, design and construction with Denver Parks and Recreation.

“This was a great opportunity to secure a piece of property for the future,” he said. “We’re lucky to have

found the property at all.”

Before 2A was approved, Robertson said the city struggled to race developers to buy properties in University Hills. The city would need to secure grants and other funding

before buying the land, and often lost out on prime locations.

Councilmember Kendra Black, who represents the University Hills neighborhood. said she was excited to see the project come together. She has been working with the city to acquire land for a park in the area for several years.

While there are some parks nearby to University Hills, such as Mamie D. Eisenhower Park, the goal of 2A is to have parks within walking distance of all residents. Many residents in University Hills also had to cross major streets like East Yale Avenue. This is something many parents are hesitant to let their children do, Black said.

Black said it will be at least a few years before a park is built on the land. First, the city will need to look at logistics and clear any buildings from Groundcover that won’t be used. Robertson said Parks and Recreation may keep the greenhouse space to support the department’s main greenhouse at City Park. Any garden equipment left behind also may be repurposed.

The new park will also need to go through a public process. Either late this year or early next year, the city will host an open house with residents to determine what amenities they would like on the two-acre space, which is is a decent size for a typical park with a playground, Robertson said.

A safer bike lane

Residents voice concern over bringing protected lanes to a historic street

Kenreich is a community volunteer with the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee. The committee was formed as part of the Mobility Action Plan, which outlines various transportation and safety goals.

Vision Zero, the goal to have zero pedestrian traffic deaths by 2030, is part of the plan, which also aims to have 30% of commuters walking, biking or taking transit by 2030. In 2017, voters approved the Elevate Denver Bond fund that included $18 million for bike lane projects throughout Denver.

BROADWAY UPDATE South Marion Parkway is not the only area in Denver up for a bike lane update. The city is also working on a detailed design of new bike lanes on South Broadway. The update will be presented in August, said Heather Burke, a spokesperson for Denver Public Works, and will “include conceptual elements

The lanes on Broadway now are protected lanes and were

Meeting with the community For the past month, Kenreich has been speaking at community meetings about the new protected bike lane along South Marion Parkway, which is across the street from Washington Park. Kenreich often commutes through the city on her bike, but said this particular lane is important to her because she lives five blocks away. The lane will also help better connect the park bike trails to the trails along Cherry Creek.

To get more people on bikes means the city must focus on what Kenreich calls the “concerned, but interested” group. These are people who want to commute more on their bikes, but worry about riding in the street with traffic. Research from the National Research Center Survey of Residents about Active Transportation, shows that nearly 60% of people living in metroDenver would ride bikes if they felt the roadways were safer.

“So many people around aren’t comfortable riding in traffic,” Kenreich said. “You have to make it convenient and safe for people to get from point A to point B.” Very few routes in Denver are connected to each other, making a map of bike lanes in the city look like “uncooked spaghetti,” she said.

Marion Street Parkway is divided down the middle by a grassy median. On either side, the street is 27 feet wide, according to city records.

The city is proposing to enhance the bike lanes on Marion by providing a larger buffer between the lanes and traffic. Protected bike lanes create a physical buffer between the bike lanes and traffic.

Planters, bollards or even a parking lane are just some of the methods cities can use to help create space between the two types of traffic.

Denver Public Works is in the design and public comment process for the Marion lanes. The department has created five options for protected lanes, including swapping the parking and bike lanes, adding three feet of buffer space between traffic and bike lanes, or moving the bike lanes to the left side of the street along the parkway.

Since the city is in the design phase, Public Works is taking comments from the public on the lanes. Although a portion of the

$18 million in bond funds will go toward the project, Heather Burke, a spokesperson with Public Works, said in an email the department won’t have a cost estimation until later in the process. The bond funds will help pay for about 50 miles of bikeways, she added.

Historic quality Residents have concerns about the plan.

Marion is not only registered as a historic parkway in the city of Denver, but nationally as well.

Patsy Brown worried that some of the designs proposed by the city would damage the street’s historic quality.

The argument that bike lanes help slow traffic on streets doesn’t really apply to Marion, she said. Steele Elementary School is located on the street, and the speed limit is already lowered as part of a school zone.

The area also is already fairly calm because of the way the parkway is set up, said Brown, adding that existing bike lanes could be used as an example for safer lanes on other streets.

“That’s why it was designed, to preserve greenery and character, and all that good stuff,” she said.

The mayor “should just use this as a template because it’s here and it works.”

Brown is not the only resident on Marion who is hesitant about the new bike lanes.

A large group of residents had questions during a Washington Park East Neighborhood Association meeting on June 11. Many brought forth concerns about construction on the lanes, as well as safety for pedestrians crossing the lanes and the potential loss of parking spots.

“Parking is critical,” Brown said.

A few people also voiced the possibility of converting a gravel trail on the west side of the street into a bike lane instead.

Outside of the meeting, Brown also said the street is very narrow.

She feared that adding a buffer between the bike and traffic lanes would make it difficult for larger trucks to use the street. The neighboring Washington Park fire station, 1500 E. Virginia Ave., frequently uses South Marion to get to major streets like Alameda Avenue, she added.

Burke said the city is working on many of these concerns.

Public works has been in contact with the fire department to ensure its access to the street is not restricted. The department is also working with Parks and Recreation to ensure designs for the lanes fall within the strict guidelines of the city’s designated parkways, she said.

As for the width of the street, Burke said fitting a protected lane into the street is not a problem as far as city guidelines go.

“The travel lane and parking lane dimensions are actually wider than our current standards, so there is enough space for a protected bike lane, a parking lane and travel lane,” she said.

Kenreich presented at the June 11 meeting and helped answer some residents questions. The dialogue between the community and advisory group has been positive overall, she said. Most people have safety as a goal, also a priority for the new bike lanes.

“It’s very easy to think what’s wrong with it and the way it is,” she said. “In the end, I think people will be pleasantly surprised with the outcome.”

South by Southeast festival returns to Denver Staff Report Councilmember Kendra Black is once again bringing the South

by Southeast festival to Denver for its third annual event.

This year’s event, set for Aug. 17, is themed Beers, Bikes and Bands. The event will go from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at James A. Bible Park, 6802 E. Yale Ave. There will be musical performances by five bands, as well as lawn games, a dog park, vendor booths and food trucks.

Black’s office is looking for volunteers to help run the event. Volunteers can sign up for: ID check, beer tent, waste watching, cashier, check-in and set up. The shifts are three hours long, and volunteers get a free beer and T-shirt. Triathlon event will give kids a new way to enjoy the park

In an effort to extend summer programming for kids into the fall months, staff at the Washington Park Recreation Center are setting out to try a new event — a miniature triathlon.

While the event will be a condensed version of the real thing — a full Ironman Triathlon includes a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run — Glen Batista, recreation supervisor at Washington Park, hopes it will challenge kids and give them an interest in major race events.

“This is kind of the first time we’re branching out and seeing how to use the entire park,” said Batista, who described the park as a “phenomenal place” for runners and cyclists.

“We have all the resources so let’s see what we can do.”

The rec center is still working with the city to finalize permitting. As of June 25, the triathlon is planned for October and will include

swimming 150 meters in the rec center’s pool, a 1.75-mile bike ride and just under a mile run around Smith Lake, which is on the north side of Washington Park. The race will be for kids from 8 to 12 years old.

The parking lot in front of the rec center, 701 S. Franklin St., will be closed to cars, Batista said. Participants can then use the space to switch from the bicycle portion of the race to the running section.

For the last several years, city rec centers have been working with the My Denver program, Batista said. The card gives students free access to libraries and local museums, as well as the rec centers, which offers a place to go during summer months. The program is for children from 5-18, according to the city website.

DU announces new chancellor New dormitory to be named after Burwell family Staff Report With the University of Denver’s Chancellor Rebecca Chopp stepping down this month, the school announced that Jeremy Haefner would be taking over as the 19th chancellor.

Chopp has served the university since 2014 and retired because of health concerns.

She announced her decision to step down in April. She was the first female chancellor in the university’s history.

The board of trustees at DU announced the new chancellor in an email to the school community. The board voted to elect Haefner on June 7. He starts in the role on July 15, according to the email.

“After extensive study, many consultations, and much reflection, the Board heartily concluded that our community has, in Jeremy, a

national thought leader in student and faculty success, a great communicator, and an individual personally committed to advancing the University and further expanding our diverse and inclusive community and shared values,” the email said.

Haefer formerly served as provost and executive vice chancellor at DU and has been a part of creating the university’s Impact 2025 goals. He joined the university in 2018 and before that served as provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York for 10 years.

Corinne Lengsfeld will serve as the interim vice chancellor while the university searches for Haefner’s replacement.

Burwell Family Foundation gives $5 million to career center DU announced in a news release in early June the Rodney and Barbara Burwell Family Foundation had donated $5 million toward the new Center for Career Achievement.

The building is one of three projects under construction on campus and is part of a new

development plan to update facilities on the campus. The building will be named the Burwell Center for Career Achievement.

nd just like that, a year has gone by.

My first issue of the Washington Park Profile came out in July 2018. In the last year I have covered the South Platte, the food bank at South High School, housing costs and more.

Through this job, I have met so many people doing great things for the south Denver community. I continue to be excited every day to learn new things about these neighborhoods and to provide residents with the news.

I often hear from readers who tell me about new businesses in the community or local construction projects they may be worried about. Though I try to

have my ear to the ground as much as possible, I still miss things, and these emails are hugely helpful to me.

I came up with the idea for our Growing Pains series after hearing from residents. In neighborhood meetings and interviews, people have talked about their fears on how a new building will impact their lives. It made me want to look deeper into some of the issues.

Not everything in this paper is about hard news. I want to hear more about the feel-good projects you can’t live without. The people in your neighborhood who make you smile just by being there.

I have always considered it a privilege as a writer to share the stories of others. A community is made great

by the people who help run it and, luckily for the city of Denver, there is no shortage of people who care. It makes my job just a little bit easier to know there is always something to write about.

But this reflection is also an opportunity for me to reach out to you, the reader. Are we hitting all the news you think we should? My job as the editor is to be out in the community — to meet people, hear their concerns or interests, and then inform others about it.

Feel free to reach out to me with your ideas or concerns. Together, we can continue telling the story of south Denver.

I Concentrated innuendo brings about maximum effectiveness

ix words may not seem like a lot, but think of the evocations of “I love you. Or do I?” You have a story, complete with conflict.

Entries in the six-word story contest came from California, Illinois, Ohio, and Colorado. From a well-known, local radio voice. From an 80-year old, former high school English teacher, and from a 17-year-old aspiring writer.

I received entries from two notable Colorado artists, and one each from a husband and wife.

Many of the stories were straightforward, a few were oblique, some were witty.

It reminded me of the cryptic title of a Jack Nicholson film. If you have ever wondered what “Five Easy Pieces” means, it refers to the title on a piano recital program that appeared in a scene that was cut.

My high school English teacher, Sharene Schmalz (Cincinnati) sent, “Bunnies lost to the

t is bittersweet that this is both my first and last column for the Washington Park Profile as District 5 councilwoman. I’ve been asked to write because redistricting in 2015 included the Virginia Vale neighborhood — which the Profile covers — as part of District 5.

Virginia Vale is GUEST led by the Registered Neighborhood OrCOLUMN ganization president Paul Aceto. When first inheriting your neighborhood, I learned that I needed to make a board appointment to the Four-Mile House board of directors.

I discovered that no resident of Virginia Councilmember Vale had ever been asked to serve, even Mary Beth though the property Susman resides smack dab in the neighborhood. I called Paul, and asked if he would serve, and busy as he was, he agreed. His leadership on that board has been a significant asset to both the beloved museum as well as the neighborhood.

I have enjoyed attending the neighborhood annual meetings with the great attendance and engaged citizens. And the summer picnic is always a lot of fun. I didn’t get a chance to do the fall hayride but, hopefully, now will have some time.

outdoor stuff to do. And, of course, you have McMeen Elementary School with five stars for excellence.

In the larger scope, I have been proud of my tenure on City Council, having led the creation of our city regulations for the first U.S. city to legalize recreational marijuana. Most cities have modeled their regulations after ours now. Then I tackled the short-term rental market in a twoyear process that engaged neighbors who both had these kinds of rentals and those who didn’t. It resulted in one of the best systems of regulations in the U.S. and the highest compliance rate. It, too, has been the model for other cities. I am pleased that we have created dedicated funds for affordable housing through linkage fees that development pays and with marijuana tax revenue. I supported and worked for the 2A Parks initiative that gives a dedicated fund to the acquisition of lands for new parks, and led the council committee for the Green Roof initiative — now the Green Building initiative — that will increase the environmental sustainability of all buildings in Denver.

It has been a privilege to serve as your city councilwoman and to work hard for the welfare of our city. I wish my successor all good luck in her tenure and encourage you to stay engaged as you have been, and as I will.

Mary Beth Susman is the councilmember respresenting District 5, elected in 2011.

How to garden for the Colorado region

D

id you know Denver is characterized as a steppe climate? The term “steppe” is defined as a semi-arid climate with low precipitation (8-14 inches a year), high fluctuations in temperature and a mountain range — in our case the beloved Rockies, which shield us from westerly winds and rain.

What does this mean for those of us who garden?

We face the challenge of choosing plants that can thrive with little water and extreme temperatures. A unique climate presents us with the opportunity for a unique solution — a plant palette suited to our region that allows us to create beautiful, region-specific landscapes.

There are many plants that thrive in a semi-arid climate that also tolerate our summer heat and winter cold. Rather than using plants from the East and West coasts, the South and the Midwest, where soil, temperature and precipitation differ dramatically from ours, we can use plants from other countries that have similar climates.

For example, red hot poker, also known as regal torch lily (Kniphofia caulescens) is a native to South Africa where it lights up acres of terrain with its showy summer flowers. Another garden gem is Diascia integerrima or P009S Coral Canyon ® twinspur.

This perennial provides coral pink flowers all summer and throughout fall. Red feathers, or Echium amoenum, is a member of the borage family and is native to Mongolia.

This species has upright red blooms on stalks up to 1-foot long from June through August.

Some of the most popular garden perennials have alternative native species that do better in our region.

For example, Echinacea purpurea or purple coneflower, is a popular flower known for its late summer color and its medicinal properties. However, Echinacea angustifolia is the species native to the western United States — it is drought-tolerant and thrives in our native, lean soils. Another example of a native species is Liatris punctata, which is

better suited to Colorado’s dry and lean soils than the more commonly found Liatris spicata Kobold.

Cultivated native plants boast improved aesthetics and naturally thrive in our region.

Gaillardia aristata is a short-lived perennial that is native to the western half of the United States. The cultivars of this plant are many and for good reason. Often, blanket flower can become floppy and look unkempt. Cultivated varieties offer bunchier plants with flowers that are bolder, brighter, bigger and longer-lasting.

Another example is rubber rabbitbrush, which is widespread in Colorado. You see it along roadsides, including Interstate 470, Route 85/Santa Fe Drive and in the open plains. The fact that it grows along highways and in open country indicates that it is one tough plant! Rabbitbrush is an excellent pollinator plant and the dwarf cultivar, Ericameria nauseosa ssp. nauseosa baby blue form, is an easy-to-grow, soft textured, manageable and tidy garden plant.

Whatever you plant, remember: Have fun and enjoy! Identifying and utilizing plants that are well-suited to our region makes gardening work much easier.

This program, a partnership among Denver Botanic Gardens, Colorado State University and the horticulture industry, identifies and trials plants for our region. Plants that meet the program’s criteria are labeled Plant Select and can be found at your local garden centers— just look for the Plant Select tag!

Whatever you plant, remember that while Colorado has unique gardening challenges, we have unique plant solutions as well!

Becoming the ‘new

normal’ South Denver residents get creative on paying for housing

anet Bardwell’s home in University Park has been in the family all her life. It is her childhood home and where she grew up. When her mother became sick in 2010, Bardwell moved back into the home to help care for her.

After her mother died, Bardwell wasn’t sure she could keep the house.

For one, it was a large house. But she also wasn’t sure she could afford it.

“I couldn’t find a place that was in a neighborhood that I wanted to be in,” she said. “I had to figure out, ‘How do we cover this mortgage?’ .”

Over the past several years, Denver has continued to grow — from almost 600,000 in 2010 to an estimated 716,000 this year, according to U.S. Census Bureau records.

Developers have tried to keep up with housing demand. But costs of apartments and houses had already

Making a smash hit

New festival is ready to launch in Cherry Creek

Smash in the Square event director Anthony Constantino believes the inaugural weekend of his new art festival in Cherry Creek is a comeback.

Constantino describes the festival as an open-air art exhibition, featuring top-tier art set to live violin music. Smash in the Square was initially planned for last summer, but was canceled because of issues surrounding the permit. This year, Constantino has been busy relaunching the festival in hopes the event will benefit artists while connecting the Cherry Creek community. The festival will be held on St. Paul Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues on the weekend of Aug. 3-4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“It’s a world-class nationally recognized hotspot for high-end art and culture,” Constantino said on his choice to hold the festival in Cherry Creek. “There are a lot of art enthusiasts, art lovers and art collectors in that area.”

The festival will showcase painting, photography, mixed media and jewelry. Festival-goers can expect art by nationally known artists and local Colorado artists.

This past spring, Constantino held a festival at The Village in Castle Pines in Douglas County. Additionally, he has worked to combine

While last year’s festival was planned for South Jackson Street, a mainly residential street in Cherry Creek, it has been moved to the mixed-use St. Paul Street. The new location has allowed Constantino to reach out to local businesses in

hopes that the Smash festival will bring them additional foot traffic.

“I have been reaching out to all the businesses, and I have gotten a lot of people’s support,” Constantino said. “Everyone is really excited about it and thinks it will be a great and positive event for the area.”

According to Jill Lis of the City

and County of Denver’s Department of Special Events, last year’s festival revealed a gap in the city’s permitting process. While Constantino had all the requirements to meet the permit, the event’s proposed location on South Jackson Street did not meet the needs of some residents.

The city has since worked to change the way permits work for events on residential blocks, so neighbors and event planners feel represented in the planning process.

“If someone else came to the table and wanted to have an event in a similar space they would not be allowed unless they got 75% written support by the local residents,” Lis said of the new process. “What we encourage with all events, whether it’s just in a park or they require a street closure, is that they go through this notification process where they actively reach out to the residents and businesses directly …Just to proactively engage them and inform them of what is coming.”

Despite the challenges that have occurred, those involved in the festival and in the neighborhood, are gearing up for the exciting new event. Beyond the celebration of art and those who create it, Constantino is hopeful that the festival will also connect and celebrate the local community.

Face It Together nonprofit awarded $500,000 grant Staff report Face It Together has received a $500,000 grant from the Stand Together Foundation to help the nonprofit expand its reach in Denver and help more people fighting addiction.

The foundation supports social entrepreneur-led nonprofits that deliver personal transformation and remove barriers for individuals in poverty, including addiction and mental health issues, according to a news release.

Face It Together helps break the cycle of poverty by equipping individuals struggling

with substance abuse disorders with access to effective care.

The organization is part of the foundation’s Catalyst Network, a growing group of nonprofits.

In the Denver metro area, approximately 260,000 people suffer from an alcohol or illicit drug addiction problem, and Colorado stands out nationally for heavy substance use, the news release said. It’s estimated that addiction-related issues cost the Denver area almost $884 million annually.

“We are excited to have Stand Together’s continued support in our efforts to build

a community-wide solution for chronic disease-focused addiction support,” Face It Together President Jane Ingalls said in the release.

Headquartered in Denver’s Washington Park neighborhood, Face It Together provides evidence-based peer addiction management coaching to people impacted by addiction.

Face It Together’s approach is highly datadriven, with coaches tracking client progress through a digital health platform in more than 60 areas.

Their coaching is focused on helping people improve every aspect of their lives, not

just the part that involves drinking or using.

Sessions are offered in person and remotely by secure video, email, text or phone through the Face It Together mobile app. Coaches work with clients to develop effective, science-based strategies for behavior change, learn practical skills to manage their chronic disease, address barriers to wellness and reestablish connections to family and community, the release said.

Face It Together’s data show that 91 percent of its clients with addiction show measurable steps toward wellness after 90 days of coaching, the release said.

Junior League of Denver grants $50,000 to nonprofits Members logged more than 100,000 volunteer hours in honor of 100th anniversary Staff report The Junior League of Denver granted $50,000 to eight nonprofit organizations at the league’s 100th anniversary celebration May 22 at the Tivoli on the Auraria campus, according to a news release. Additionally, the release said, league members logged more than 100,000 volunteer hours since June 1, 2018, in honor of the organization’s 100th anniversary in Denver.

The Junior League is granting up to $100,000 in honor of its 100th anniversary.

Four nonprofits received $20,000 in May 2018, and up to $30,000 will be awarded in May 2020, bringing the total to $100,000 to honor a century of service, the release said.

The league also launched a yearlong initiative to track and log 100,000 hours of volunteer service from its 1,750 members.

Ruth Mullis, WWII-era ‘Rosie the Riveter,’ hopes to meet others

here isn’t much time left to get to know someone like Ruth Mullis.

Mullis, 96, is one of a dwindling number of “Rosies,” named for Rosie the Riveter — women who stepped into men’s roles in labor and business during World War II. In years past, Mullis has attended annual American Rosie the Riveter Association (ARRA) reunions, but health issues kept her home from this year’s convention in Iowa. With much of her generation fading into history, she’s hoping to meet some of her remaining sisters from the home front.

“People are starting to forget about us,” Mullis said from her Littleton home. “Before the war, women could be teachers, secretaries, nurses or housewives. But now, we’ve got women CEOs. We were part of that change. We proved our capabilities. We were some of the first to wear pants, for heaven’s sake.”

Rosies were a vital part of the American war effort, said ARRA President Donnaleen Lanktree.

“They did it because they needed to do it,” Lanktree said. “Without them, winning the war would have been far more difficult. Many felt a sense of duty to the country, and to do what they could to bring their men home. Others did it to secure an income if their husbands were killed.”

There were perhaps millions of Rosies, Lanktree said, who produced 80,000 landing craft, 100,000 tanks, 300,000 aircraft, 15 million guns and 41 billion rounds of ammunition.

Ruth’s story Mullis was born in 1923 in Michigan, and in the early years of the Great Depression, her father’s slew of respiratory diseases sent the family south in search of warmer weather.

Mullis, her parents and two brothers wound up living in the woods outside Orlando, Florida, where they slept on planks laid through the windows of their Model A Ford to keep them

off the ground.

“I don’t like to talk about that time much,” Mullis said. “We ate what we could. We trapped rabbits. I was anemic.”

Eventually they moved in with relatives in Miami, and life steadied. In high school, Mullis met Ted Johnson, the man she would marry.

Mullis graduated from high school in June 1941, and wanted to go to nursing school, but her family couldn’t afford to send her.

She was running a dry cleaners that winter when America entered the war after the Pearl Harbor attack.

Johnson joined the Navy, Mullis said, and gave away most of his belongings, expecting to die in combat.

Mullis said she, like many other young women, was eager to do her part to win the war. But her first application to work in a Convair aircraft plant was rejected for lack of experience.

Mullis went to work in the factory cafeteria and enrolled in riveting classes in night school.

Though she showed little aptitude for riveting, she excelled at technical drawing and was soon put to work designing templates for aircraft wing parts.

“The tolerance for the parts was just three thousandths of an inch,” Mullis said. “The most exciting moment was when I’d finish a template, and they’d take them out to the floor, and soon you’d hear ‘whir-chunk. Whirchunk’ — the sound of parts coming off the line using my templates.”

Mullis married Johnson while he was home on leave in 1943, and by the time the war ended, she was repairing damaged planes coming back from combat theaters.

The ‘strong neighborhoods’ of District 4 Second-term council member focuses on community lead development

The area of the Washington Park Profile is covered by several Denver City Council districts: 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10. In June, two new council members were elected to those districts, and three are returning. Councilmembers, Kendra Black, Paul Kashmann and Jolon Clark return to their respective districts, while councilmembers Amanda Sawyer and Chris Hinds

At-Large councilmembers represent the city as a whole. Both Deborah Ortega and Robin Kniech were reelected this year.

Hampden is a busy area for the councilmember. Black said she would also like to see safety improvements along Hampden.

Additionally, she is looking into rezonings along the major street to help better prepare the area for some new development.

The light rail is also on Black’s checklist.

The Denver Regional Council of Governments recently gave the city a grant for improvements to three light rail stations in District 4 — the Yale, Belleview and Southmoor stations.

Once those improvements are made at the stations, Black said development in the area will likely follow. She’s ready to bring community and volunteer groups together for new projects that may come down the pipeline.

“When it gets developed I want to make sure that the community is part of that process,” she said. “We’re bringing those groups together.”

Black also has heard from residents that they want more local businesses and

restaurants in the district, which has many chains, Black said.

District 4, primarily developed in the 1950s, is a relatively new area to the city, Black said. Because of this, the area is very car focused.

“People really want to be able to walk places,” she said. “We don’t have any sort of Main Street.”

A unique factor in District 4 is that it shares a border with four other Colorado cities — Aurora, Englewood, Cherry Hills Village and Glenwood Village. Many of the people in District 4 probably spend some of their time in these other cities and vice versa.

Having lived in District 4 for most of her life, Black said the area has good schools and local parks for people raising families.

The central location is ideal as well, she said.

“I like our strong stable neighborhoods,” Black said. “We have really wonderful parks.”

When Kendra Black first ran for District 4 of city council in 2015, she wanted to be an advocate for the area. While development was happening all over the city, neighborhoods in her district saw little investment, Black said.

She began her campaign on the platform of More for Four. Once she was elected, she said she became like a “squeaky wheel downtown,” working to get more projects started in her district.

Her work is beginning to pay off. In May, the city signed a contract for a new park in University Hills, a pet project that Black spent nearly five years working on.

Although Black — who was re-elected in May — is pushing for more projects in District 4, she said she wants to create balance on where that density is going. She is also working to implement neighborhood plans

to help guide that density.

“We need to have a plan with architectural standards,” Black said. “We have a lot of community meetings to ask people what they’d like us to work on.”

One development project Black has her eye on is a Kmart that recently closed at South Monaco Parkway and East Hampden Avenue. She would like a project there that the community will value.

District 5: ‘the best of both worlds’ Amanda Sawyer hopes to strengthen infastructure as the city grows

When Amanda Sawyer found out about a new development going in up the street from her house, she was startled.

But as Sawyer began to try and rally her neighbors to fight the project, many told her not to bother.

“I saw how disheartened people in the neighborhood felt,” Sawyer said. And unfortunately, she also noticed the feeling was mutual throughout the city, saying “So many people in so many different districts feel the same way.”

Although Sawyer said she never saw herself taking on a career in politics,

the experience with her neighborhood development felt like a wake up call. She wanted to bring the voice of the people back to the city process.

City Council, which includes five new members, such as Sawyer, will be sworn in on July 15. Sawyer said she is excited to begin collaborating with other city council members. She’s hoping to learn more about projects that re-elected members have been working on to see if there is an opportunity to team up on issues.

“I think everyone brings something special and unique to the table,” she said of the new council.

Although she knows she’s one of the “new girls on the block,” Sawyer said she’s ready to work on some of the issues she’s passionate about such as mass transit and looking at the planning board for development in the city.

She also wants to help push for a new transportation department. City Council introduced a bill last month that would allow voters to decide on a new Department of Transportation and Infrastructure in November. Having a dedicated department will help free up some of the budget items “competing with other equally important things that are de-

manding of our time and money.”

Infrastructure is a subject that Sawyer said she thinks has not been talked about enough when it comes to development in Denver. While the city has been growing, and a lot of building has been happening, the infrastructure a city needs has not kept up in a lot of places. In District 5, for example, quite a few of the neighborhoods don’t have sidewalks, she said.

Many of the District 5 residents she spoke with during her campaign had concerns about how development could impact the community. While Sawyer said she does want to push for density in some areas, she wants to make sure it’s done with the right infrastructure and transportation options in mind.

“I’m excited to be a voice for balance,” Sawyer said. “This concern about development lead me to all these other things that are equally important.”

That balance is one of the key things that makes District 5 unique. It’s a slower paced community, where kids can get together to play. It’s also close to the heart of Denver and all the things a city has to offer.

“It is both urban and suburban,” Sawyer said. “It is the best of both worlds.”

Paul Kashmann sits at a booth in Pete’s University Park Cafe. It’s a staple spot for him, where he offers open coffee meetings once a week with District 6 residents, something he plans to continue now that he’s been elected to a second term.

He’s just returned from a group council trip to Austin, Texas, where Kashmann, along with several other council members, went to look at the Community First! Village for homeless people.

The housing project sits on 51 acres and will have more than 500 homes once everything is built, Kashmann said.

He is hoping Denver can consider similar supportive environments for its homeless residents, Kashmann said. The Austin project includes several types of housing and is meant to create homes for people who are chronically homeless or dealing with mental health issues.

One problem with housing-first solutions, Kashmann said, is that they homeless people into one group. “The homeless population is not one population,” he said, and added he would like to find a solution that treats people with dignity.

Although the homeless population is one of the most vulnerable as housing costs grow more expensive, they are not the only demographic

that loses out as Denver continues to grow.

“We need to address affordability in a more substantial way. And that’s for all areas of the income spectrum,” he said. “The middle class is increasingly getting shoved out the door.”

Development is another area Kashmann will focus on this term.

Residents often miss notifications of rezoning because the required city signage is difficult to read, Kashmann said. It includes legal jargon and is posted on buildings in black and white.

Kashmann said he would like brighter signs with easy-to-read wording. “It should be much more easily consumed,” he said of the notifications.

Like many councilmembers, Kashmann also wants to look at development-and-mobility issues.

Daily traffic is something he hears about frequently from District 6 residents. One of his biggest concerns is that heavy traffic on the highways and major streets often pushes more drivers onto neighborhood streets, which can create unsafe situations. Adding density to neighborhoods often means adding more cars.

Kashmann believes there are neighborhoods and areas in Denver that can take the weight of more density to help house the growing population. But Denver needs to be smart about how that development is done, he said.

“Density is important,” Kashmann said. “That doesn’t mean you build 20-story towers everywhere.”

With five new members joining City Council this month, Kashmann is hopeful the group will move forward on climate-change policies, such as ways to divert some of Denver’s waste stream and a possible carbon tax.

“I think this council is going to be fairly aggressive in seeking out whatever we can do to reduce Denver’s impact on climate change,” he said.

‘A lot of amazing things to protect’ District 7 representative continues to work for a greener Denver

Denver parks have long been a passion project for Jolon Clark, city council president and District 7 representative.

Before he was first elected in 2015, Clark worked for nearly 20 years for the Greenway Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the South Platte River. Last November, he proposed initiative 2A, which adds a .25% sales tax to raise funds for park projects or new land for parks, and which Denver voters passed. The initiative “will start to transform all of our existing parks while adding parks in communities that don’t have them,” Clark said in an email.

He’s now working with District 7 residents to build a dog park in the area.

But Clark, re-elected in June, is also looking toward new ways to make the city more green and the district a leader on environmental issues in Denver.

“For the big-picture items, I am looking forward to fixing our waste diversion. We only recycle and compost 22% of our trash when 75% of it is recyclable or compostable,” Clark said. He also wants to tackle climate change head on.

Safety for pedestrians and helping Denver meet its Vision Zero goals are other priorities.

Vision Zero is a plan to eliminate traffic deaths for pedestrians in Denver by 2030.

One of the reasons pedestrian safety is key to the future of District 7 is because it is one of the most walkable districts. Areas such as South Pearl Street have a large amount of shops and restaurants drawing people to visit.

But the district also has heavy traffic congestion on streets such as Santa Fe Drive and Federal Boulevard, one of the city’s High Injury Network streets. High Injury Networks represent 5% of the streets in Denver, but 50% of the traffic deaths.

‘Balance the growth’ New District 10 representative sets sights on mobility in Denver

A characteristic that makes District 7 unique is that Interstate 25 splits it into the east and west side. And the needs of the two sides vary widely, Clark said.

“It is hard work to make sure that every resident is getting what they need when the district faces such different issues on the east and west sides,” he said. “There are historical issues that are hard to fix — like unpaved alleys and roads that are still state highways not city streets — that are left over from when parts of the district were first developed before they were incorporated into Denver.”

The west side of the district is home to Denver’s Little Saigon Business District. The area helps promote the heritage and culture of some of Denver’s Asian communities. Many of these businesses have deep roots in Denver, Clark said.

The district’s proximity to the South Platte also means it has more riverfront than other districts.

Living in District 7 feels like a small town in a big city, Clark said. Clark grew up in the area and is now raising his own children there.

“We have some big problems to solve,” he said, “and a lot of amazing things to protect.”

As he begins to wind down from the June runoff campaign, newly elected Chris Hinds says he’s already started to receive calls and is scheduling meetings with District 10 residents. New councilmembers aren’t sworn in until July 15, but Hinds is considering this as training for the job.

Since he won’t receive full-time staff from the city until he’s sworn in, Hinds is currently a oneman band, he said.

“The elect part means you have all of the responsibility, but none of the resources,” he said.

“I’m doing my best to try to field concerns.”

Hinds was part of a city council shake-up that unseated three incumbent councilmembers, including District 10’s former representative, Wayne New. Hinds said he felt like voters used their voices in “making sure we have government that represents the people.”

Hinds has been brainstorming a list of ideas he wants to accomplish, he said. Mobility in Denver — a key component to his campaign and an issue that drew Hinds into politics — will be a main focus.

In 2008, Hinds was hit by a car while riding his bike. The accident left him with a spinal cord injury, and he has since used a wheelchair to get around. Nearly 10 years after the accident, then-Gov. John Hickenlooper signed the Chris Hinds Act into law. The act created a placard which exempted people with disabilities from paying for parking if they are physically unable to use a meter.

His work on that law was an inspiration to Hinds. “If they’re going to start naming laws after me as a private citizen,” he thought, “imagine

what I could do with legislation.”

Among his ideas on improving mobility are creating protected bike lane networks in the city and providing better sidewalk access for pedestrians and people who use wheelchairs. Denver’s uneven sidewalks can often feel like a “war zone,” Hinds said.

In addition to the physical layout of sidewalks, Hinds said he frequently heard from people while he was campaigning that construction projects often block sidewalks or take away from local parking.

The city should be “making sure we all have the freedom to get from A to B, and feel safe while doing it,” he said.

As a district that is close to both downtown and Cherry Creek, Hinds sees the area as a potential starting point for multimodal systems in the city. Although he recognizes the city can’t get rid of cars and parking lots overnight, the council needs to better prioritize transit and biking to enact change: “I see District 10 as a strong opportunity. It’s the best district to tackle and lead our non-car movement in Denver.”

The city also needs to find a better, more balanced system of growth, Hinds said.

“We have to balance the growth for the future of Denver,” he said, “with the people who live here today.”

Mayor Hancock’s third term ‘an opportunity to be bold’ In his final term as mayor, Hancock hopes to build on his successes

After winning his third term as mayor, Michael B. Hancock is taking on a new strategy: He wants to tackle equity in Denver and ensure growth in the city benefits all.

“A third term also presents an opportunity to be bold,” Hancock said.

One of those bold strategies is increasing wages for the people of Denver. Wages are one of the roots to the problem of the housing crisis, Hancock said.

“We’ve got to boost wages,” he said. “In workforce housing, without boosting wages, we are missing the whole formula.”

Going into the campaign for his third term, Hancock had a list of projects that are underway, such as development along Brighton Boulevard in River North, airport improvements, the redevelopment of the National Western Complex and more, which he had worked for since he was first elected.

“Those are things that in 2011, when I came into office, I was committed to completing,” he said.

But the campaign also alerted Hancock and his team that Denver residents were unaware of some of his work behind the scenes in programming for homelessness and affordable housing in Denver. “We’ve got to do a better job of building awareness,” he said of the city’s efforts on those fronts.

Hancock recently began focusing the Office of Economic Development in Denver more toward the housing crisis. Last year, he hired Britta Fisher as the city’s new chief of housing. This year, Hancock raised the housing budget to a record $50 million in an effort to fund more housing projects.

Hancock also created a new office, the Neighborhood Equity and Stabilization Team, headed by former state senator Irene Aguilar. The office works with some of Denver’s most vulnerable populations to create programming to help people stay in their homes as prices and taxes rise.

“When we were able to talk about what we were doing, people got it,” Hancock said of working on the campaign trail. “We were able to change minds.”

ended in a runoff. Hancock faced off against Jamie Giellis, a developer behind the growth in RiNo. Hancock is no stranger to runoff elections. He won his first term in 2011 after a runoff election pitted him against Chris Romer. Before running for mayor, Hancock represented District 11 starting in 2003 on the Denver City Council.

But this particular runoff became a grueling one, as issues of race and sexual

harassment were brought center stage. As an African American man, race has always been an important issue to him, Hancock said. But, he said, voters “needed to hear that I still care about those issues.”

In February 2018, Hancock was accused of sexual harassment by Leslie BranchWise, who worked as part of the mayor’s security detail in 2011-2012. She said the mayor made inappropriate comments, many through text messages to her while

she worked for him. Those allegations came to the surface again as opponent Giellis said she wanted to fight a “culture of sexual harassment.”

Hancock publicly apologized for the text messages he sent. He added that after Branch-Wise came forward, he began to speak with survivors of sexual harassment and assault. Those talks, he said, “helped me to have a better posture” and acted as a lesson to him.

Moving into his third term as mayor, Hancock hopes Denver residents will remember him as someone who built up the city. Back in 2010, Denver was not a well-known city, he said. Now, it frequently makes lists for best place to raise a family, best place to build a start-up company and the like, Hancock said.

“We weren’t on those lists of top 100 cities,” he said. “We were able to move Denver forward as the most modern globally competitive city.”

Since starting as a city council member, Hancock has also worked on boosting children’s programming in Denver. The My Denver program gives free access to Denver children to museums, recreation centers and libraries to children. Last November, Denver voters also approved a scholarship fund for low-income students.

“We have completed the circle of care if you will, for young people of Denver,” Hancock said of his work with kids.

After eight years serving Denver, and living here for most of his life, Hancock says its people are still his favorite part about the city.

“Denver residents are some of the most engaging, open and honest,” he said. “They love good, frank conversation, even if they don’t agree with you.”

he Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps came to Denver on June 20 to play a stand-still performance during Civic Center Eats. The corps usually plays p lays in formations but did a standing concert at the Greek Amphiteatre, 150 W. 14th Ave. The corps played two performances, one at 11:45 a.m., the next at 12:30 p.m.

On June 21, the Blue Knights were scheduled to head to Englewood High School, 3800 S. Logan St., for their send-off performance at 7 p.m.

The Blue Knights comprise a competitive junior drum and bugle corps organization in Denver. The organization hosts the annual Drums Along the Rockies event, which will be held at Broncos Stadium at Mile High this year on July 13. In addition to brass and percussion players, the corps features color guard and visual ensembles.

Performers from around the country audition to perform with the Blue Knights. It is operated by Ascend Performing Arts, a nonprofit organzation based in Denver.

A study looks into the impacts of urban gardening on health and cancer prevention

More than 100 people in the Denver area are participating in a research study about community gardening that’s now in its third year. They’re learning plenty about how to grow a garden — but they also may be planting the seeds for their own good health and a stronger community.

They also get to enjoy the fruits of their labor, growing tomatoes, peppers, squash, green beans and other types of vegetables.

A combined 280 people participated in the first two years and another 106 currently are in the program, a partnership that is backed by the American Cancer Society, which is funding the study, and the University of Colorado Boulder, the University of Colorado Cancer Center, Colorado State University, Denver Urban Gardens, Community Activation for Prevention Study, Michigan State University and University of South Carolina. Similar studies are happening in other states.

“What we’re trying to find is how urban gardening affects community health,” said Natasha Hill, development and communications coordinator at Denver Urban Gardens, a nonprofit which has 180-plus community gardens in cities such as Denver, Arvada, Lakewood and Aurora; 40 of them are participating in this project. The organization also helps with 66 gardens at area schools.

“We genuinely believe that teaching people how to garden and physically grow their own goods will help people be more nutritious and maybe more holistically healthy as a community,” Hill said.

Study results won’t be released until December 2020.

But as noted by Angel Villalobos, program manager and a research assistant in CU-Boulder’s Environmental Studies Department, “People are really excited to garden, and we hope to bridge the gap between people that are interested in being part of a community garden or in gardening in general and getting connected with a

nearby community garden.”

The study has been open to new gardeners and/or people that haven’t gardened in the past two garden seasons that are ages 18 and up. Participation in the research study is voluntary. The program offers one class as a general orientation before each gardening season, plus Denver Urban Gardens offers free workshops yearround.

To gather information on the health effects of gardening, researchers ask participants to complete a 200-question survey three times a year, delving into their general health, what they eat, what they do to stay physically active, their neighborhoods, their relationships with neighbors and family, and if they feel connected.

Just in case they get too comfortable, participants are asked to wear an activity monitor on one of their legs for seven days – three times a year.

“The idea is to learn what role those factors play in cancer,” Villalobos said. For example, it’s beneficial to eat more fruits and vegetables because of their high fiber content. And the exercise that gardeners get just from nurturing their plots is good for them.

Study participants are compensated $150 per person and given startup kits, plot fees and up to $50 in other garden expenses.

Jill Lipp, an associate professor in CU-Boulder’s environmental studies department, is the principal investigator. Katherine Alaimo, an associate professor in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, is the co-principal investigator.

Villalobos said in addition to doing health research, the study has been building relationships with its participants. Many stay in touch with him after their volunteer year concludes.

“Seeing the amount of enthusiasm for participants to be part of this kind of research has been really encouraging and unexpected,” he said. “How excited they are when you talk to them about the study has been surprising to me.”

or those who weren’t alive on the night of July 20 a half-century ago, it’s difficult to imagine what it must’ve been like to see men land on the moon for the first time. For the millions watching, it was an event that will never be forgotten.

Metro resident Stephen Kelly certainly didn’t. And when a little over a year-anda-half ago he realized the landing’s 50th anniversary was nearing, he thought it was an occasion worth celebrating.

“I went to the management at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum, where I had volunteered for a long time, and mentioned to them this was coming,” Kelly said. “I thought it would be great if the museum could commemorate the event.

Originally, I was thinking of a one-day event to celebrate. It’s really expanded since then.”

Apollopalooza will be held at the air and space museum, 7711 E. Academy Blvd. in Denver, from July 13-20. The event will feature everything from film screenings and Apollo veterans panels to a STEAM festival and career mingle.

“There are a lot of milestones that can be celebrated: Yuri Gagarin’s flight as the first human in space, Alan Shepard as the first American in space and Apollo 8.

However, the Apollo 11 moon landing has the feel of a triumph that can be touched,” wrote Jessica Castellano, Wings Over the Rockies’ chief development officer, in an email interview. “We not only went to space, we touched it, walked on it, and came home. Nothing has been the same since that day, for our aerospace heroes and for our global citizens.”

One of the main goals was to offer an event of substance and without fluff, said Kelly, who chaired the committee that organized Apollopalooza.

Fortunately, education is a key part of Wings’ mission statement, and Denver is home to a burgeoning aerospace industry.

National titans like Ball Aerospace, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Sierra Nevada Corp. all call the state home.

“We have a great line-up in-store, including folks from the Colorado School of Mines and University of Colorado, who don’t just teach in these fields – they’re involved in current programs working to get people back on the moon,” Kelly explained. “We have a number of folks that were actually veterans of the Apollo program in one aspect or another, and these guys have some stories to tell.”

Some of the marquee names include Gene Kranz, NASA flight director for all Project Gemini missions, as well as Apollo 11. He also was the leader of the Apollo 13 “Tiger Team” (actor Ed Harris played him in Ron Howard’s “Apollo 13” film).

Dr. Harrison H. Schmitt, an Apollo 17 astronaut and moonwalker, and Joe Engle, astronaut and X-15 pilot from Colorado Springs, are just a few other people who will be on hand.

There’s a lot of interactive and social events to be excited about, including a Launch Day Breakfast with Kranz on July 16, and a Moon Landing Viewing Party on July 20 that features a live band, dancers, barbecue dinner and themed costumes for the night, capped with a screening of the moon landing timed to the minute it happened 50 years ago.

Apollopalooza is an all-ages event, but students and millennials are being particularly catered to with events that exhibit education and career opportunities in related fields.

The STEAM For All Festival on July 14 is focused on community accessibility to aerospace and will feature workshops, activities and more. Because the event isn’t just about the past – it’s also a look to the future.

“After attending a full day, a lecture or just stopping by to see what all the fuss is about, we hope visitors come away with an amazing appreciation for the thousands of men and women who helped put the first men on the moon 50 years ago,” wrote Ben Theune, Wings’ director of marketing, in an email. “We hope guests leave with an excitement about the future of the space industry as a whole and a desire to follow our progress back to the moon in 2024 — and maybe to even get involved.”

After the war In the fall of 1945, Johnson returned home, and Mullis said she and the other Rosies were eager to move on with life.

“We did our part as best we could,” Mullis said. “We all walked out those doors and went back to being women. We were thinking of starting lives with our husbands, of having children.”

A tumor, however, left Mullis unable to have children, though she flourished as a draftsman, building on the skills she learned at Convair. She went to work in an engineering firm, designing roofs for churches, gymnasiums and other large structures.

“I would design these complex roofs, then I would take them over to an engineer who would sign his name on them,” Mullis said.

Mullis and Johnson retired to a cabin above Deckers in Colorado in 1973. Johnson died in 2003, and Mullis stayed alone in the cabin for several years after.

In 2006, Mullis met Leonard Mullis, a World War II veteran and former head

librarian at Arapahoe Community College, on Match.com. They became one of the oldest couples to ever connect on the dating site. The couple married and moved into Leonard’s home in Littleton.

Mullis has enjoyed meeting other Rosies at the ARRA conventions, but says they’re fading fast.

“There were 50 or 60 of us at the 2017 convention,” Mullis said. “By last year, it was down to 28. That’s how fast we’re dying off.”

Finding Rosies Many women who lived through World War II may not even realize they were Rosies, said Jo Ann Fisher, president of ARRA’s Colorado chapter and a daughter of a Rosie herself.

“A woman saw my Rosie shirt, and said, ‘All I did was take over driving the tractor on the farm when my brother went off to war,’” Fisher said. “I told her: ‘You’re a Rosie!’“ The ARRA counts any woman who supported the home effort as a Rosie, Fisher said, whether that was in manufacturing, seamstressing, farming or growing a Victory Garden.

It’s taken decades for Rosies to appreci-

ate the part they played in breaking down gender roles, Fisher said.

“They’ll say they went to work to bring the men home so they could get married and have babies,” Fisher said. “And we say, ‘no, you broke it all open for women!’”

Fisher said she’d love to help Mullis meet other Rosies.

“It’s been hard to get meetings going in Colorado,” Fisher said. “We’ve been trying, but I’ve kind of given up. People are so spread out, and the women are all at least in their 90s now.”

Mullis said she doesn’t know how much time she has left, but she hopes she can spend some of it in the company of some of the bold, strong women who answered their country’s call.

“Let’s get together,” she said, “before there’s no one left who remembers.”

‘He meant so much to this community’ Denver Broncos honor late owner Pat Bowlen

On Jan. 25, 1998, Littleton residents Sandy and David Alexander were sitting at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego as they witnessed the Denver Broncos win the franchise’s first Super Bowl. Following the game, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen handed over the Lombardi Trophy, awarded to Super Bowl winners, to quarterback John Elway, saying “This one is for John.”

Following the Broncos’ Super Bowl victory in 2016, Elway, now general manager and president of football operations for the team, held the Lombardi Trophy and said, “This one is for Pat.” Bowlen, who had been fighting Alzheimer’s disease, died on June 13 at the age of 75. On June 18, there was a free, openhouse tribute at Broncos Stadium at Mile High.

More than 5,000 people came to the tribute to honor the life of Bowlen. The team had artifacts on display, including Bowlen’s fur coat, the team’s Lombardi trophies, game balls and more.

“He gave us a winning team that we didn’t have before. He put together some of the best teams we’ve ever had,” said David Alexander, who has had season tickets for Broncos games for 45 years with Sandy.

Outside of football, Bowlen made significant contributions to the Denver Boys & Girls Club and donated more than $35 million to charitable organizations in Denver since 1993.

“He was a real gentleman to everyone,” Sandy Alexander said.

“We’ve been around the Broncos for years and he was just an upstanding man, and it was hard to see what happened to him.”

Bowlen will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 3 along with former Denver Broncos player Champ Bailey.

“It feels like someone I had met died,” Denver resident Hugo Ramirez said. “He meant so much to this community and to this city.”

Among the artifacts on display were Bowlen’s fur coat and his suit.
