The core service of Face It TOGETHER is peer coaching for addiction — similar to health coaching but with a specific focus on addiction. It serves people with the disease of addiction as well as loved ones. Face It TOGETHER also partners with employers

to bring addiction support resources into workplaces.

The organization received a $1.2 million grant from the Daniels Fund to establish Face It TOGETHER Denver, which will bring government officials, healthcare and business leaders, nonprofits in the addiction field and other key community partners together to build a community-wide solution for chronic disease support for addiction.

More than 10 percent of people 12 and older in Denver suffer from an alcohol or illicit drug addiction problem, according to Face It TOGETHER, and Colorado stands out nationally for heavy substance use. It’s estimated that addiction-related issues cost the Denver area almost $884 million annually.

The organization has been operating in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for 10 years and also has centers in Fargo, North Dakota, and Bemidji, Minnesota. The application was to rezone the two-story industrial building at 2065 S. Cherokee St. in the Overland Park neighborhood in favor of a new apartment building with retail space and parking. Both the Overland Park Neighborhood Association and Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation voiced approval for the project.

radio crackled with chatter as first responders talked through an active shooter drill at the Evie Dennis Campus in Green Valley Ranch. Michael Eaton, chief of the department of safety with Denver Public Schools, listened as sirens wailed in the background.

“In a crisis is not the time to identify how well your plan works,” he said. Shootings “happen in a matter of minutes.”

Denver Public Schools participated in the two-hour drill on June 20, along with school safety officials from

Jefferson County, Aurora, Adams 12 and Boulder Valley.

A handful of students and educators from DPS participated as actors inside the building, while one person acted as a shooter.

The drill will help organizations find the strategy’s strengths and weaknesses in responding to a shooter, Eaton said. With so many entities involved, one of the most important aspects is how they all communicate with each other.

People who are the most effective in crisis situations are the ones who stay calm, he added. Drills help train safety officers to keep a level head.

DPS has invested $20 million in school safety, Eaton said. The department of safety has 135 staff members, including campus safety officers and emergency preparedness professionals.

Schools are fitted with video cameras, so the dispatch center is able to watch lockdown events in real time.

During the drill, officials were able to communicate over the radio the location of the shooter in the building, as well as locations of any potential victims.

DPS has been working with Colorado-based I Love U Guys Foundation, which offers training programs in standard response protocols, Eaton said.

Each school in the district also goes through emergency training. DPS is included in the Denver Police Department (DPD) radio system, Eaton said. This way, if an event in the city could impact a school’s safety, the school can immediately go into lockdown procedures.

“We want schools to have very clear and consistent protocols,” he said.

Randall Wells, special operations chief with the Denver Fire Department (DFD), said they frequently work with DPD and Denver Health to run similar drills for random acts of violence. The response will often incorporate other resources such as RTD as a means of transporting people away from a dangerous area.

DFD is responsible for setting up incident commands during the drills, Wells said. The exercises go through the response to an active shooter situation, as well as evacuation and medical care afterward. He added that first responders also help set up communications for concerned families and children to reconnect with their parents.

With more shootings occurring, Wells said it is important to practice drills with schools so that children can be protected. Running the drills, he added, shows students that people are working hard to keep them safe.

The drills are a recognition that schools have “been a target for random acts of violence,” Wells said. “It’s a very hard pill to swallow.”

DU hopes $143 million development will connect with community New dormitory, hotel, commons area among planned construction

A large-scale development plan at the University of Denver proposes to change the landscape of the campus with the addition of more retail and dining outlets and better connect the 125-acre campus to its surrounding communities, university officials said.

“It was our deep commitment to try to open up our campus to be used more,” Chancellor Rebecca Chopp said. “When you think about campuses, they’re these phenomenally large facilities that are just not used enough.”

The private school is in south Denver’s University neighborhood, with the core of campus at 2199 S. University Blvd.

In addition to improving and building new student facilities, DU is looking to add mixed-use retail and restaurant developments with housing, as well as a hotel. The plan will be flexible to meet the needs of students and neighbors over the next decade, said Chopp, adding that she hopes the plan’s ambitious scale will attract developers and shop owners who want to be a part of the expansion.

“It really sets the table for what we could be,” she said.

The first phase of the Denver Advantage Campus Framework Plan will be three new buildings that are expected to be completed by the summer of 2020 and will cost a combined $143 million. Construction on the first two, a 500-bed dormitory for first-year students and a “Community Commons,” began in mid-June, and the third building, the Career Achievement and Global Alumni Center, will follow in January.

The Community Commons will include classroom, study and dining spaces. The Career Achievement building will provide students with the opportunity to build relationships with DU’s alumni and to network with potential employers.

Outside of the three buildings, the school has not started the design process on new structures. DU is working with Ayers Saint Gross, a Baltimore-based architecture firm. The school board would need to vote on individual building projects within the plan before construction starts.

Renovations, student fee part of proposal Chopp said construction at DU will happen in clusters around the school instead of spreading the work throughout the large campus. This way, students can navigate around building projects. The plan has been divided into phases, and Chopp said they are hoping a bulk of the projects will be finished in eight to 10 years.

The school will also look at adding affordable housing projects and, potentially, even senior housing in the area.

Construction on the buildings and open spaces in the plan will happen as money becomes available. Cost estimates for completing the entire plan are still being estimated, the school said.

The upcoming residence hall at the school will be paid for by student room and board charges. The Commons and Career Achievement Center are being paid for by donations to the school as well as development partners. The school is hoping to use similar development partnerships to fund future construction.

Once the buildings open, all students will pay a new fee of $6.50 per credit hour to support the commons building.

Adam Gross, a principal with Ayers Saint Gross, said the mixed-use developments will help add additional revenue streams to DU through lease terms.

During the May 30 presentation, Gross said some buildings will be renovated, such as Sturm Hall, which serves as an academic building.

Others, like 50-year-old student dormitory Johnson-McFarlane Hall, also known as J-Mac, would be demolished. Gross said J-Mac in particular would have cost more to renovate than to build a new structure. The building will be replaced with a new building for undergraduate housing.

“You’re kind of throwing good money after bad by continuing to invest in it,” he said.

Plan would improve campus mobiity Campus buildings are currently separated into different sections across the 125 acres.

Gross said the new construction plans would help to better connect those parcels. The school is also planning on improving mobility around campus, including new pedestrian and bicycle pathways. A pilot program for a new shuttle system will launch in July.

About the University of Denver The University of Denver was founded in 1864. It has more than 300 academic programs for undergraduate and graduate-level students.

As a private school, DU does not receive aid from the government and instead gets funding from tuition and private donations.

For the 2018-19 school year, the DU tuition rate is $49,392 for a traditional full-time undergraduate student.

“We are trying harder and harder to find ways to make it more natural to move across campus, and that the cars understand that they’re in a pedestrian zone,” said Mark Rogers, the university architect.

Shared inspiration

energizes annual art market

‘I love to meet with someone who responds to my work’

F

or metal artist Dea Shea, known to many as the Iron Maiden of Denver, art is an activity done all on her own. But when the annual Summer Art Market rolls around, her passion becomes a team effort between her and husband Leif, whom she calls her CEO, because he Carries Everything Out. “It’s too hard for one person,” Shea said.

Just setting up a booth can take participants five hours or more, she noted. As a result, no one goes it alone — all the artists come with an entourage.

The Art Students League of Denver (ASLD), an organization that offers classes for artists in the Colorado community, hosted its 26th Summer Art Market on the weekend of June 9 and 10. The free event took place in the West Washington Park neighborhood and served as a chance for 234 ASLD artists to showcase and sell their work. A bulk of the booths were stationed on Grant Street from East Fourth Avenue to East First Avenue, with more on East First, Second and Third avenues.

Many artists like Shea enlisted friends or family to help run their booths, while others teamed up with fellow students. For Teri Hoyer, it was a combination of both—she shared a booth with Neal Pierman, fellow ASLD student and husband of three years.

“What’s so great about our partnership is that we’re both interested in landscape, and we’re both in the same places most of the time,” she said. “He’ll photograph it, I’ll

paint it.”

Hoyer became interested in art after her retirement and convinced Pierman to rekindle his interest in photography when he retired, too.

But as enjoyable as her journey has been, she also recognizes the challenges associated with it.

“Pricing is one of the most difficult things an artist does,” said Hoyer, whose pieces at the market ranged from $120 to $360. “I look at other people’s work, the quality of my work, what it costs me to frame, and I take all those things into consideration.”

Similarly, water color painter Anita Forsyth identifies pricing as the “worst” part of being an artist.

“Someone once told me that they price their art by the inch,” she said. “But then some paintings take a lot longer to make and some much shorter. Some just flow out

of you, and some you have to really work on.”

Her pieces varied from $25 to $250, a price range she looked forward to comparing to other artists’ when she looked around the festival on her break. In the meantime, she had someone else gathering intel —artist and longtime friend S.A. Bennett.

Forysth has been an artist for a year and a half. She had never shown work before at the Summer Art Market, and Bennett was a huge source of support.

“She’s been an artist her whole life,” Forsyth said.

Bennett not only shared a booth with her, but was also the one to suggest showing at the market in the first place.

agreed was extremely high-energy.

“This is one of the best shows in Denver. It’s a fun group that comes out for it,” said ceramics artist Wiladine Eggerman. “They’re really trying to support artists, and you can tell they’re happy about doing that.”

Included in this group were many aspiring and budding artists. Rebecca Schaefer, a regular attendee of the fair and a photographer, felt inspired after viewing the work on display at a printmaking artist’s booth.

“When I was in her booth I was like, `This makes me wanna learn how to do it,’ ” Schaefer said.

The artist in question, Mami Yamamoto, was in the same shoes as Schaefer not long ago. She had never experimented with her preferred art-form, printmaking, before taking her first class at the

ASLD in 2014.

“It’s very unique and not many people are familiar with it,” she said.

Because of that, Yamamoto said she gets plenty of questions from prospective customers, and she’s always happy to walk them through her process, step-by-step. For her, that’s one of the most rewarding parts, not only of being an artist, but of showing at this event in particular.

“You can meet with actual customers and talk to them directly, so that’s a benefit of this show,” she said. “I love to meet with someone who responds to my work.”

And for the event’s attendees, the feeling is mutual.

“I’m here because I love seeing what people create,” Schaefer said.

“This event is opening me up to new forms of art.”

Summer music festival relaunches on South Pearl After competing with more and more summer events, organizers decide to cut back

South Pearl’s longtime annual summer show got a new look this year as the Music and Beer Festival.

For the past several years, the South Pearl Street Association has put on two concerts, a bluegrass show in June followed by a blues show in August. But after competing with new festivals like Velorama in August in the River North Art District, as well as the Colorado Rockies and Red Rocks concerts, the association decided to cut back.

Mark Gill, president of the association, said they hoped to pool resources into putting on one bigger event this year, which was held June 9 in the 1200 block of Pearl Street as the Music and Beer Festival.

“There is a lot more going on, a lot more competition than there was 12 years ago,” he said. “This year we decided, let’s try doing one and just push it … and just go from there. Let’s just roll out the kegs one time this year instead of two.”

Early counts from Swallow Hill Music, which ran ticket sales and music for the event, showed a 12 percent increase in ticket sales from last year. Gill said that nearly 5,000 people attended.

While South Pearl will not hold its second summer concert, Gill said the organization would still host its Oktoberfest and Winterfest events.

The South Pearl Street Association launched its first Blues and Brews concert in 2007. Gill said they started with one show and added the Brewgrass concert the next year. At first, Gill said they did things by the “seat of their pants.”

“We learned a lot the first year,” he said.

“We’d all been to festivals, but we didn’t have a model to go by.”

The festival featured six bands this year, with Jon Cleary as the headliner. While shows in past years focused on either blues or bluegrass, Gill said the association went for a mixture this time.

That Damn Sasquatch, a local bluegrass band, plays the first set at the South Pearl Music and Beer Festival on June 9.

Near the front of the stage on June 9, Kyle Cook stood holding his 1-year-old son Kavon, while his 3-year-old daughter Olivia danced to the first set by local bluegrass band That Damn Sasquatch. Cook said a friend of his lives in the neighborhood and that the music festival was a great opportunity to spend some time with the kids outside. The young pair are already bluegrass fans.

“They love dancing,” Cook said.

This year, 12 breweries came, including Oskar Blues Brewery and local pub Platt Park Brewing Co. Gill said that both breweries have participated in the event since it started in 2007.

Mark Birkin, who works with Wild Cider in Firestone, said it was his second time coming to pour beer at a festival on South Pearl. Wild Cider sold out of cider when he participated in the event two years ago. The cidery helps provide some variety, he said.

Ciders appeal to crowds that want lighter options, similar to wine or champagne. The ciders are also gluten-free.

“It fits this crowd really, really good,” he said.

Local nonprofit brings awareness to the 71-mile High Line Canal

aves of long golden grass line the sidewalk where a group of volunteers recently walked a six-mile stretch of the High Line Canal, a 71mile greenway that stretches from Southwest Littleton to Northeast Aurora. The trail winds through South Denver through Virginia Vale and the Cherry Creek Country Club.

This particular stretch, between miles 66 and 61, is in Green Valley Ranch and gets less water than other portions of the trail.

Over the next few weeks, these volunteers will trek the entire trail. By walking the trail, volunteers can help the conservancy find points that need better signage or are interuppted by busy street crossings.

Connie Brown, a project coordinator with the South Pearl Street-based High Line Canal Conservancy who walked with the group on June 15, noted most of the people who use the area for recreational purposes tend to stay in their own bubble.

“So often, the canal backs up to communities and people’s backdoors,” she said. “You don’t realize the breadth.”

The trail has different types of plant life throughout, depending on how much water a certain area gets, Brown said.

The walks, which are done in partnership with Walk2Connect, help introduce people to parts of the trail they wouldn’t usually go to. It also helps the conservancy see which areas of the trail have better signage or are interrupted by busy street crossings.

Walk2Connect is a Denver-based business that brings people together to learn more about the places they live though organized walks. It uses walking movement leaders to oversee the walks throughout Denver and the Front Range.

At first, Alonge said she wasn’t sure she wanted to do the trails as a walking leader.

“It was a little daunting,” she said. But “it becomes an intimate gathering.”

And the people she has met on the trail have inspired her to take other fitness leaps in her life, such as hiking the incline on Pikes Peak and walking a marathon.

Why collecting data is important The conservancy first opened in 2014. It works with Denver Water as well as the individual municipalities the canal trails cross to make sure the area stays vibrant and accessible to the public. Josh Phillips, manager of community initiatives, said the nonprofit has a small staff that works out of its office at 915 S. Pearl St. The conservancy depends on volunteers to help with projects and outreach.

The volunteer program launched at the conservancy last year and 28 people worked with the nonprofit, Phillips said. This year, the High Line Canal Conservancy created several new volunteer programs for people to participate in over the summer. Wildlife and plant counts will help bring data back to the nonprofit, which is working to build a new master plan for the future of the canal. The walking programs help to bring interest to a historic area in Denver.

A little over 17 miles of the trail system runs through Denver.

Over the summer, the conservancy is holding several BioBlitz events along different areas of the canal to get an approximate animal count.

Gary Julsgard, a volunteer in the walking event, said he participated in similar animal counts that tracked geese in the city of Denver. While the events don’t necessarily bring in a scientific count, Julsgard said, it helps people think about the impact animals have in the area.

The data shows “where animals live, how they live and how they interact with us,” he said. “It’s a great way to get people out, looking and learning.”

The canal was first built in 1883 as an irrigation ditch, and was purchased by Denver Water in 1924. The organization still uses the ditch to provide irrigation water to about 70 customers. Jose Salas, a media relations specialist with Denver Water, said the organization only runs water for short periods of time through the canal from April to October.

But that also depends on how much water the state receives.

“Once an engineering marvel, the canal is not an efficient means of delivering water.

About 70 percent of the water seeps into the ground or evaporates before it reaches customers,” Salas said in an email. “In dry years, the canal’s junior water right prohibits using the water at all.”

Enhancing an urban greenway Denver Water opened the area to the public for recreation in 1970. The 71-mile trail runs through 11 different jurisdictions, Brown said.

Each jurisdiction takes care of its portion of the trail.

Brown said that since she moved to Denver, she’s been within walking or biking distance to the canal and that it acts as a “refuge within the city.” She hopes the conservancy can work to lessen breaks in the trail like busy street crossings.

“It would be so cool if you could walk 71 miles uninterrupted,” she said.

The master plan will also look at landscaping around the trail, including drought-tolerant plants and using storm water. Phillips said Denver Water will stop delivering water to the canal in the next few years. The conservancy’s master plan is looking into retrofitting the canal to use storm water for other properties.

“We really want to understand how the ecology of the canal might change as storm water is introduced into the system,” Phillips said.

He added that retrofitting the canal for storm water use would be cheaper than building new storm water retention facilities. The conservancy is hoping that storm water will help keep the vegetation around the canal thriving.

John Hoesterey, a planning manager with the conservancy, described the canal as an urban greenway within the city and noted the master plan hopes to build on the resources the recreational trails already have.

“That’s what we’re really hoping to enhance and make the canal sing,” he said.

Some portions of the Highline Canal get less water. The diversity in plant life across the KAILYN LAMB 71-mile path makes it more interesting to volunteers.

As part of their work, High Line Canal Conservancy members count insect and animal species along the canal trail to get a better picture of its ecosystem.

Teacher salary increase announced after educator rally Denver Public Schools also launches new fellowship program

Budget for 2018-2019 school year approved Denver Public Schools has unanimously approved a $1 billion budget for the 20182019 year, which includes an average salary increase for teachers of 4.4 percent, according to a news release.

The budget incorporates $25 million in new funding, all of which is going into increasing compensation, the release stated.

The decision at the end of May came a month after the Educators Rally at the Capitol building in Denver. DPS closed schools on April 27 so teachers could attend the event. Several other school districts across the state announced closures as well.

The district also is working to raise other employee pay, the release said.

The $1 billion budget is being divided into creating resources that fit into the district’s goals for 2020. The plan has five goals including support for students as well as investing in college and career programming.

DPS will also be cutting spending to increase resource for special education, mental health and funding for high-poverty level schools.

Thrive Fellowship at DPS A group of 20 teachers will be the first to participate in the DPS Thrive Fellowship, an extension of the Teacher Leadership and Collaboration program.

The Thrive teachers from 14 schools across DPS were announced on June 11.

Thrive will allow teachers to participate in a year-long leadership program, which will have monthly learning sessions, coaching and a capstone- action research project. The fellowship was funded through a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

DPS first launched the Teacher Leadership and Collaboration program in the 2013-2014 school year. The program is built for teachers who did not want to move into an assistant principal, or principal position. The program has teachers working with students in the classroom half the time and coaching fellow teachers in the other half.

Debbie Hearty, the chief human resource officer at DPS, said the Teacher Leadership and Collaboration program has been beneficial to teachers in the program and to the ones they work with.

“We have seen higher levels of retention for teacher leaders, the teachers they support and the kinds in their classrooms,” she said in a release. “Through this work, Thrive fellows can impact not only their students, but the entire district.”

4. Sight, touch, and spatial awareness can be other areas to check. These 3 components make up the balance system, too.

Telling your stories is at the heart of what we do I have been writing since I was little, when my large untidy scrawl took up an entire page of paper. Something about the way words captured my heart as a reader wanted me to take on the job of stringing sentences together myself.

My journey to the Wash Park Profile involved a lot of words, though my childish scrawl eventually morphed into typed articles.

Unlike many of the people who landed in their dream profession, I did not always want to be a journalist. I wanted to be the next Annie Leibovitz, the magazine photographer famous for her photo of John Lennon, and have my photos grace the cover of Rolling Stone.

But before long I found myself working for The Metropolitan, the student-run newspaper at Metropolitan State University-Denver.

I wrote about student art shows and the LGBTQ community at Metro. I learned that newspapers are not just a part of the community, they sometimes help to create it.

By the time I made my way to Columbia University for a master’s degree in journalism, I had decided that journalism was the field for me. While studying there I spent time

covering neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn, where I learned stories surround us all the time, if we only take a moment to listen. Walking into a local shop or bar could yield stories on volunteers helping to save feral cats (yes, I really did write about that) or vintage camera collectors.

I love telling people’s Kailyn Lamb stories. I love the way people light up when they talk.

The first step I took in my career after grad school was at the Summit Daily News in Frisco, a community-oriented paper much like the Wash Park Profile.

After covering a memorial park for a Flight For Life helicopter pilot who died in Summit County, his widow told me she would keep the article I wrote for the rest of her life. This taught me what a newspaper article can truly mean to one person, that storytelling is also about heart.

My next stop at BusinessDen taught me to look for the heartbeat behind the facts and figures, the reasons people start a business, the life that local shops lend to a community.

And, now, my path has led me here, to the Wash Park Profile, where I’m excited to find the heartbeat in your neighborhoods, to tell your stories, to further build upon the legacy the papers have created in building community.

To help me do that, you’ll find me in local cafes once a month for Coffee with the Editor.

I’ll be posting information about these gettogethers on our social media pages. The first will be on Friday, July 13. I will announce the location and time on our social media pages.

It doesn’t hurt to ask, but I know what you’re going to say.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Fourth of July came and went without any residential explosions?

They’re illegal. They’re annoying. They’re inconsiderate.

They negatively impact those who experience PTSD, those with pets (especially dogs), and those, like me, who consider them a juvenile form of entertainment.

“Look, it blowed up.”

It goes on every year because we’re entitled to do as we please, no matter how it might affect others.

Americans are not widely known for being considerate. We take spray paint into national parks.

Earlier this year, Delaware resident Michael Rohana was accused of breaking off a terracotta warrior’s thumb at Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute.

On the way back to Delaware, Rohana allegedly bragged about sneaking into the exhibition and stealing the thumb.

If you don’t consider either of those a big deal, please move on to another column.

Wouldn’t it be much nicer if everyone celebrated July Fourth with backyard gatherings that maximized conversation and minimized skyrockets and mortar shells?

QUIET DESPERATION

Nah. When it comes to the Fourth, silence isn’t golden.

Far from it.

So is hazing.

Hazing will never end as long as there are fraternities somewhere. Boys will be boys, you say? Ask your son who went through it.

I am a wet blanket. A spoilsport. No doubt about it.

That’s why I don’t mow my lawn at midnight, even though I am always up, and there’s plenty of lamp light.

My neighborhood sounds like a war zone on the Fourth. Then, late, it goes quiet. Have there been times when I wanted to get out the mower?

Absolutely. But, like I said, I was raised wrong.

My father always said, “Be considerate of others.”

It’s a lost cause. I heard a cell phone ring in church one day.

Small cell installations face city regulations In order to meet the current 4G voice and data demands of businesses and consumers, as well as prepare for future upgrades to 5G speed service, all of the wireless carriers are having to expand their infrastructure using a decentralized small-cell approach in business and neighborhood areas.

Using a decentralized small-cell approach means putting installations in the public right-of-way (the area between the street curb and sidewalk), which is allowed by federal and state law. These small cell local installations are dramatically different than the past large cell towers covering large geographical areas.

As with many improvements, unintended consequences will occur. When the first carrier began its small cell installations, their 30-foot-high infrastructure poles were proposed for any area within the right-of-way.

With the pole issue in mind, there was great concern on the possibility of one or more 30-foot-high poles being located in front of

residential properties and in our parks.

As a first step, Councilman Wayne New contacted Xcel Energy’s local and corporate offices to get a co-location policy approved by Xcel. This policy would allow the wireless carrier to install equipment on an existing street light pole, eliminating the need to install an Councilmember additional 30-foot-pole.

With Xcel’s approval Wayne New of a co-location policy, the Denver Public Works Department worked with Xcel and the city attorney to mitigate the effects of these installations and develop specific regulations to govern the small-cell infrastructure program.

These regulations were approved by the city.

The following key regulations now manage the small cell infrastructure program: Each small cell infrastructure pole installation is allowed by an individual revocable permit, which means the installation permit can be revoked due to regulation non-compliance.

Installations are preferred in the following locations: • Closest to the corner of two intersecting streets • Within alleys • Closest to the common side-yard property line between adjacent properties • Co-location with an existing applicable street light pole • Placed equidistant between street trees, with a minimum separation of 15 feet Installations are not to be located in the following areas: • Between the street-facing wall plane of any single- or two-family residential structure and the adjacent street centerline (not in front

of the home) • Within 250 feet from any other freestanding small cell infrastructure • In front of properties designated as federal, state or local historic landmarks • Along the frontage of city public parklands The small cell infrastructure program has initially focused on installations in the higherdensity areas of downtown, Capitol Hill and Cheesman Park. This program will eventually affect all Denver areas and neighborhoods as the demand for 5G service increases.

Helper’s Here and Now The past informs the future, and I have decades of “Hindsight,” but hey, this is the Here and Now. It’s July and when we explain to the kids that our forefathers had this idea of Independence which did not decree we have fireworks, picnics and bike-decorating (though you could call this “pursuit of happiness”).

Our forefathers celebrated with gratitude for our new national decrees of independence and our freedoms. Speeches and marching bands!

So, kids, remember that as you eat your hotdogs and decorate your bikes and sing along with the band.

We’re wired for Independence! At birth, we want to get out and breathe on our own — The twos! The teens! Out on your own! Then later “I will not give up my car! I will stay in my house!”

Along the way we learn to get along with inter-dependence, accomplishing goals with others, seeing many viewpoints and making decisions, the interconnectedness of everything, everywhere. Our forest fires darken skies far away. Your melted ice sloshes over my porch. Your helping hand saves my life.

In a big-growing city, the City Fathers/ Mothers can feel the urge to exercise Independence by making big-city plans, then announcing them. They figure they are experts and know best. It’s a time-saver. Savvy J.Q.Public takes a look and says “Hmm, but that won’t work.” A street to be eliminated, say.

I can avoid one (to an extent) but not the other.

Container gardening is a good option for urban dwellers

By Mike Holloway Calling all potential urban gardeners: if you would like to add some color to your life, I have tips for gardening in the city.

All you need is a bright room, balcony or patio.

When planting in locations with full sun exposure, be sure to select sun-loving plants. When planted in containers, however, even sun-worshipping varieties do better where they have a little relief from the sun. This is because plants in containers, especially hanging baskets, have less soil to retain water. Regular watering will prevent leaves and flowers from drying out in hot, sunny periods. On the flip side, planting containers in deep shade can be somewhat of a challenge.

Choose your plants wisely. Selecting bright and/or white flowering, shadeloving plants can really brighten up an otherwise dark area.

Protected sites are usually found beside walls or other garden features that provide shelter from the sun, wind and rain. In built-up areas, the temperature is often several degrees warmer than other exposed areas, so it is possible to grow a range of tender plants successfully.

Exposed sites are more difficult. Here, you can try planting a tougher variety of plants in well-drained soil, or select lowgrowing plants that will not be battered by wind. Succulents and cacti are very resilient in exposed areas.

Plants grow in a variety of different shapes and sizes. To select the most suitable plants for your containers, consider a plant’s natural growth habit. Is it upright or trailing and how tall will the plant grow? When buying plants, always check

the mature dimensions on the label. The shape of the container and plantings should look harmonious and when out in the open — as opposed to against a wall — the container should look just as good from the back and sides.

Color is a matter of personal taste, but when designing your containers, an awareness of the mood color combinations create is important. For example, reds, oranges and yellows give a feeling of warmth, while purples, blues and greens create a cooling effect.

When selecting a color theme, you can choose colors that are in harmony with each other, such as different shades of the same color such as dark red to pink.

Other harmonious colors are orange and yellow and purple.

Another way to design is by using contrasting colors that do not share common pigments such as blue and yellow, red and green or even vivid orange and deep purple.

When planting for texture it becomes clear that flower petals and foliage come in a staggering range of sizes and textures.

They encompass everything from waxy, smooth, shiny, matte and prickly with subtle variations in-between.

Your choice of textures should be decided by where you intend to place your containers. Small feathery leaves and delicate little flowers create subtle beauty that should be appreciated from up close.

When creating a display that can be appreciated from a distance, try working with bold flowers and large leaf shapes.

When working with groups of containers, I often try to choose containers in similar colors and styles to focus attention on the different foliage and flowers.

Coming in on the last stretch of the Colfax Marathon in May, Makenzie Bothner paused to check her pace. It was her first marathon. But as a soccer player for the University of Denver and a high school track athlete, Bothner had set a high standard for herself, hoping to finish the 26.2 miles in less than four hours.

“At mile 17, I checked my pace, and it was 7:48 (per mile) or something, and I was like `Whoa,’ “ she said. “It was a surprise.”

When she crossed the finish line, Bothner had no idea how well she had done.

She placed 10th in the overall women’s division and third for women ages 20-29.

Her finishing time of 3 hours 23 minutes qualified her for the 2019 Boston Marathon.

The Park City, Utah, native came to Colorado to play as a defensive outside back for the women’s soccer team at DU. The past few months have been busy for Bothner, who graduated from DU in June with a degree in finance. After spending some time traveling to Europe over the summer with her parents, she’ll return to Denver to work for Insight Global, a staff services company.

“Colorado hadn’t really been on the map for me,” Bothner said, “but the school, there was a lot of things about it that I really liked.”

After she finished her last soccer season at DU, Bothner said she felt a little stir crazy. She enjoyed running and many of her friends and family encouraged her to try a marathon. It was the opportunity to put herself out there and try something new.

But running that kind of distance was a new challenge for Bothner. She had played soccer since she was 8. She knew her body’s limits and when she could push past them.

“Sports do that to you — they give you a reason to believe in yourself. With soccer, I’ve been playing it so long I knew what I could get out of myself,” she said. But “I had no idea how my body was going to react” in a marathon.

The most difficult part of running the marathon was the mentality and making sure she wasn’t stuck in her head, Bothner said. She knew she needed to stay calm and focus on her breathing. She said part of that was trying not to acknowledge any pain or fatigue until she hit mile 14.

For the Colfax run, Bothner said she relied mostly on her soccer skills and didn’t do much extra training for the marathon. At first, she wasn’t sure about doing another one. But now that she’s qualified for Boston, she said she plans on training harder.

“I had just finished soccer, I didn’t want it to be this crazy, crazy thing I was doing.

I signed up for it, trained when I was going to train and then went for it,” she said. “I’ll definitely take it more seriously.”

Stars and Stripes Express Fest at Union Station Starting at 1 p.m. on July 3 there will be free live music on the Terminal Bar’s Patio, at 1701 Wynkoop St. The three bands in the lineup will play popular songs through the decades starting with the `60s. The Denver Dolls will perform in the Great Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Park Hill Parade Park Hill’s ninth annual parade will start at 1:30 p.m. at 23rd Avenue and Dexter Street. The parade follows a one-mile route on 23rd to Krameria Street. A street fair will be held on the 2200 block of Kearney Street after the parade.

Coors Field The Colorado Rockies will play the San Francisco Giants from July 2-4. Both of the games on the 3rd and the 4th will have firework shows. Both games are scheduled at 6:10 p.m. Fireworks begin after the game is finished at 2001 Blake St.

Mile High Stadium Denver’s outdoor lacrosse team the Outlaws will face off against the Boston Cannons on July 4. A fireworks show at Mile High Stadium will follow the game.

July 4 Liberty 4 Mile Run at Washington Park Registration on the day of the race will begin at 7:30 a.m. The race will be held at 1000 S. Downing St. Participants can walk or run the four miles. Cherry Creek Arts Festival returns for three-day run Event will host 265 artists at shopping center, with large variety of works

The annual Cherry Creek Arts Festival has been growing and changing since 1991 at Cherry Creek Shopping Center, where it will fill the area on July 6, 7 and 8. The festival offers an all-day experience for a varied audience.

For the serious collector, there may be a really special piece that fits into a particular area of interest — or a new work by an artist one has collected in the past.

Juried artists, numbering 265, will set up booths with a huge variety of techniques, media, styles and price ranges. About 2,100 artists from across the nation applied for those 265 spots. Very few go to local artists. The 62 new exhibitors include both renowned and emerging artists. Thirteen different media categories are included in the exhibits.

For families with creative kids, there is Artivity Avenue on Steele Street between First and Second avenues. An Imagination Collaboration Mural will appeal to some children, while younger folks will be drawn to the Creation Station, one of the most popular spots at the festival, with diverse activities for hands-on art to take home. (And, there’s a diaper-changing station for the littlest folks.)

Housing prices soar beyond income growth Denver metro area homes ‘overvalued,’ report says

Housing prices in the Denver area are starting to stretch the limits of what the market can feasibly support, according to new research from CoreLogic, a California-based real estate analytics firm.

Denver’s housing stock is “generally overvalued,” CoreLogic found, meaning that the ratio of housing prices to income now exceeds 10 percent of the historical norm going back 40 years.

“Housing prices (in the Denver area) have risen 83 percent since their (low point) during the Great Recession,” said Frank Nothaft, CoreLogic’s chief economist.

The Denver metro area’s median household income, however, has grown roughly 12 percent in the same period, to around $71,000, according to Census data. In May, the median sales price of a single-family home in the area hit an all-time high of $455,000.

“Even in just the past year, the home price index is up 8 percent,” Nothaft said. “Incomes just aren’t following pace.”

Denver isn’t alone in watching home prices soar above income growth. CoreLogic found that a third of American metros are overvalued, driven by factors like a continued movement from rural areas to cities, new-home construction not keeping pace with demand and a preference of developers toward higherend units that creates a bottleneck among first-time homebuyers.

Ironically, a strong economy may exacerbate the problem, Nothaft said, as mortgage interest rates begin to creep back up after years below the norm.

“The average 30-year fixed rate is 4.7 percent, which is still low, but that’s up a percentage point from a year ago,” Nothaft said. “If mortgage rates and housing prices keep rising alongside each other, that will worsen affordability issues.”

A family looking to buy the same house today as a year ago would see its price up by 8 percent, Nothaft said, and its mortgage rate up a percentage point, translating to a 20 percent higher monthly payment than last year.

“But incomes sure aren’t up 20 percent from a year ago,” Nothaft said.

A neighborhood story The affordability situation is different depending on where you look, said Steve Danyliw, chair of the Denver Metro Association of Realtors’ Market Trends Committee.

“When you drill down into neighborhoods, you see significant variation,” Danyliw said.

“All real estate is local.”

Median housing prices in the 80237 ZIP code, which surrounds the area of I-25 and I-225, near the Denver Tech Center, are up 39.9 percent year-over-year in the first four months of 2018, Danyliw said. In contrast, median prices are down 13.3 percent in the 80235 ZIP code, which straddles South Wadsworth Boulevard south of Hampden Avenue.

Overall, four Denver-area ZIP codes jumped more than 30 percent since last year, while two experienced a drop, Danyliw said.

Still, just because a housing market is considered “overvalued” doesn’t mean prices are in danger of crashing like they did in the Great

Recession, Danyliw said.

“If you compare 2008 to now, it’s significantly different,” Danyliw said. “It’s a supplyand-demand scenario. In 2007 and 2008, our vacant housing inventory was at record highs, with almost 30,000 listings in the metro area.

Right now we’re at 5,100. We just don’t have the inventory that would change that supplyand-demand piece.”

The higher-end market may begin to cool, Danyliw said, as the ratio of luxury units coming onto the market catches up with those going under contract.

“Instead of two or three ZIP codes with median price drops, we could potentially see 10 or 15,” he said.

Other factors may come to bear on the housing market: a steady increase in gas prices can redirect family incomes, Danyliw said.

High prices may be sending young people elsewhere to buy their first homes, he said.

“We’re getting to the point where home prices have gotten so high that they outweigh the desirability of living here,” Danyliw said.

The end result of the Denver area’s housing issues might be a general cooling of the market, Danyliw said, especially if condo construction picks up in the face of reforms to the state’s decade-old construction defects law and eases the first-time homebuyer bottleneck, Danyliw said.

“2018 will still be a banner year, but it might not be a record-breaking year,” Danyliw said.

Feeling the squeeze First-time homebuyers have an uphill battle, said Jack McCambridge, the co-founder of Eave, a metro area mortgage lender.

Buyers utilizing first-time homebuyer grants or Federal Housing Administration loans may see themselves outmaneuvered by full-price cash buyers or traditional buyers, McCambridge said.

Buyers who can put 20 percent down on a house will find their bids far more attractive, McCambridge said, though 20 percent of a median-price, single-family home in the Denver area is now more than $90,000.

Low inventory and high prices mean firsttime buyers may need to make tough choices.

“One of the hardest things to do in this market is to be confident about the property you want to buy,” McCambridge said. “Is it in the part of town you want to be in? Does it have

the features you want?”

Seeking out personal connections with sellers or finding sellers interested in maintaining a family atmosphere on their block can help, McCambridge said.

Still, some would-be buyers just won’t be able to pull it off here, McCambridge said.

“Some definitely end up just discouraged,” McCambridge said.

PrideFest ‘a giant flashing stop sign’ for inclusivity Father’s Day weekend festival draws more than 300,000

For many of Denver’s residents, heading to the annual Pride Parade means more than enjoying the June sunshine. Eloise Chajkowski and Brenda Lacewell attended PrideFest on June 17. The pair live in the Capitol Hill neighborhood and came to cheer on friends who were participating in the parade. Seeing a big crowd supporting people’s right to be who they are, brought an emotional response.

“It’s been a really beautiful day, lots of tears on our part,” Lacewell said.

Neighborhoods across Denver came together to support the rights of the LGBTQ community over Pride Weekend, which ran from Friday, June 15, to Sunday, June 17.

On Saturday, the festival launched with the Pride 5-kilometer race, followed by performances in Civic Center Park. The parade and a rally at the Capitol building were held on Sunday. Event organizers for the 43rd annual event estimated that 350,000 people attended the festival, and said it was one of the largest Pride events in the region.

crosswalks at Broadway and West Irvington Place. The organizations began installing the sidewalks on June 12 to have them completed for Pride events.

Fundraising efforts were spearheaded

by Buffalo Exchange, including owners Todd Colletti, Shawna Slavinski and Greg Maronde.

The crosswalks are made of thermoplastic materials that better withstand traffic on Broadway than traditional paint. Extra funds raised will go toward maintaining the crosswalk in the future.

The materials of the crosswalk should last about 10 years, Slavinski said. “If we were going to collect that much money, we wanted it to last.”

Clark and the merchant association held a ribbon-cutting on June 15, followed by a walk-off event hosted by Buffalo Exchange.

The group worked for 1 1/2 years to bring the project together, Clark said.

Councilwoman-at-large Robin Kniech, Denver’s first lesbian member of the city council, said it was important for LGBTQ allies like Clark to help bring visibility to the community.

“It’s not just up to us LGBTQ folks,” she said.

The parade had special meaning for many this year, after the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a decision in favor of a Colorado business that refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple based on his religious beliefs.

Jon Rhodes, who moved to Denver three weeks before Pride, said it was his first time attending the festival in Colorado. He added that it was important for members of the LGBTQ community to come in support of the event.

“It’s our community,” he said. “It’s just what we’re supposed to be doing honestly.”

wedding. The Colorado court system ruled in favor of the couple. Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece, appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. While the court did not decide that Phillips had the constitutional right to refuse service to the couple based on his religious beliefs, the majority did decide the case was not free of religious bias. The decision was 7-2 with Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg dissenting. The decision came in on June 4.

Sissy Lu spent three hours putting together a leotard outfit with a lampshade style-hat and pink face make-up. “(It’s) visibility for those that are marginalized and empowerment for those people,” Sissy Lu said. “It’s kind of a giant flashing stop sign to the straight people for inclusiveness.”

s the mid-day sun beamed down on Civic Center Park, Jorge Dominguez smiled warmly from the window of his truck.

The young lady standing below him returned the smile as she ordered an arepa — a stuffed white cornmeal bread that is a staple in Dominguez’s home country of Venezuela. The truck, Arepas House, is brightly colored with the yellow, red and blue of the Venezuelan flag.

“We really love this place,” Dominguez said.

Along with Arepas House, 24 other trucks ring the edge of the walkway at Civic Center Park as Civic Center EATS ramps up to full force just past 11 a.m. on a recent day.

Culture is illuminated after dark Zoo, museums offer evening events for adults

Visit Denver’s cultural hot spots like the Denver Zoo or Museum of Nature & Science during a summer day and you’ll see children of all ages running around everywhere.

While it’s always fun to experience Denver’s many cultural amenities as a family, just as many adults want to explore on their own.

Maybe, even, while having a drink or two.

“Adults want the opportunity to learn, too,” said Jessa Phillips, the Museum of Nature & Science’s adult programs manager. “Because of that, the museum offers experiences that offer an adult night out.”

When facilities like the zoo, museum, Museum of Contemporary Art and more shut down after regular hours, that doesn’t mean they’re closed. Instead, they offer specialty programming that provides more depth, entertainment and a different kind of community.

“This is a different angle of the zoo than most people see when we’re open and full of crowds,” said Jake Kubié, communications manager with the Denver Zoological Foundation. “We want to make the zoo more accessible for adults and show that we are a place people can learn, explore and even have a date night.”

When it comes to after-hours activities, these facilities’ events mainly fall into two categories — series and one-offs.

The Museum of Nature & Science has a monthly Science Lounge series specifically for those who are 21 years old and older, featuring rotating topics and special drinks on the third Thursday of every month. Likewise, the zoo hosts the Watering Hole, an adult lecture series that features a unique theme, light appetizers and a cash bar.

The Museum of Contemporary Art has several after-hour programs dur ing the summer, including the Three Things, Any Three Things series, which is an experiment in performance, lecture and music. There is also B-Side Music Fridays, a rooftop summer music series focused on presenting the best emerging Denver bands.

Finally, the museum works with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts to host Mixed Taste, which pairs two speakers, giving pre-

“These after-hours events allow the museum to better integrate into people’s everyday life,” said Clayton Kenney, director of experience and strategy with the MCA. “They also help make MCA Denver a social gathering place, and not just a white box with objects on the walls.”

Comic Con takes

Downtown Denver is almost always a busy place, but it’s only during the weekend of Denver Comic Con that you see Superman, a storm trooper and Harry Potter crossing the busy 16th Street Mall.

More than 100,000 guests made the trip to the Colorado Convention Center for the annual event on June 15-17 to celebrate all things nerdy — films, television shows, video games, fantasy and science fiction and, of course, comic books.

“I’ve always wanted to come and see what the con is like,” said Jeff Libby, booth expert with MiHi Photo Booth, which ran an interactive, slow-motion film booth at the event. “What better way is there to be here than with some really fun stuff ?”

Proceeds benefit Pop Culture Classroom, a Denver nonprofit focused on education and literacy.

More than 200 celebrity guests, like Doctor Who’s David Tennant, stopped by to join artists and authors in more than 600 hours of panels and programming. There was also a Kid’s Lab, where children and teens explored pop culture through projects and talks from industry luminaries.

The con featured cosplaying and shopping for all ages and levels of interest, from newbies in the world of comic culture to veteran collectors.

“This is my kid’s first time to the con, and I’m showing them all the fun there’s to be had while their mom is at a cosplaying class,” said Englewood resident Justin Baca, who was dressed as Gandalf, a character from “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings. His two children, Marcus and Eric, dressed as hobbits. The costumes were made by the children’s mother. “I love the community here and all the things going on we get to gather to celebrate.”

Ambitious reading, writing goals in DPS unlikely to be met by original timetable Report shows that progress benchmarks lag in DPS

At the current pace of progress, it would take 13 years for the Denver school district to reach its goal that 80 percent of all thirdgraders be reading and writing at grade level.

It would take black and Latino students up to three decades to reach that benchmark.

That’s according to a new report by local education advocacy organization A Plus Colorado that shows Denver Public Schools is far from meeting its own ambitious goals on the timeline it set out by 2020, just two years from now.

For example, the report predicts it will take 27 years for 80 percent of Latino third-graders to meet the literacy benchmark. For black students, the report says it will take 30 years.

More than half of the district’s 92,600 students are Latino, and 13 percent are black.

The district has tried a long list of new strategies, programs and initiatives to accelerate student growth — and they’ve paid off, to a degree. Denver students made more progress on state English and math tests in 2017 than ever before, and some achievement gaps narrowed.

Current and former school board members acknowledged it’s not enough.

“Over the last 15 years, Denver has changed almost every aspect of education policy we could change,” said Theresa Peña, a former school board president who served from 2003 to 2011. “The one thing that hasn’t changed is the outcome for poor and black and brown kids.”

Retreat scheduled as first step There was not a consensus about what, exactly, the district should do differently. But the school board has come up with a first step.

At a recent all-day retreat, the seven board members discussed consulting with the public through a broad “community dialogue” listening tour.

The idea is in the early stages and is not a direct response to the report. The board talked at the retreat about asking parents, students, and community members how they define student and school success, and whether they think the district is on the right path to get there.

Some district policies, such as one that calls for closing or replacing low-performing schools, have generated controversy. The district also got significant pushback this year about the way it rates schools and ended up adjusting the measurements as a result.

“We’re in the middle of a districtwide, highlevel strategic plan,” board president Anne Rowe said at the retreat. “What I am hoping for is to test the path we’re on and see where there’s areas where we should double down, we should triple down, because the community is right there with us. Or there are other places where we made big bets, but it’s having an adverse effect.”

The district’s plan is called the Denver Plan 2020, and it has five big goals. One is that 80

percent of third-graders be reading and writing at grade level by 2020. Another is to increase the four-year graduation rate for black and Latino students by 25 percentage points.

The new report, called “Start with the Facts: Denver Public Schools at a Crossroads,” concludes that most goals “remain elusive.”

For example, the four-year graduation rate for black and Latino students has increased just 6 percentage points, to 70 percent, since the plan was adopted. However, Superintendent Tom Boasberg said the district is on track to exceed another goal that calls for doubling the number of high school students graduating ready for college or a career.

Deciding how to move forward A Plus Colorado — which generally supports the district’s reform efforts but hasn’t shied away from criticizing it, either — ends its report with six recommendations. Among them: Develop a new school rating system, lead an “`Apollo-like’ effort with creative and dramatic investment” to erase achievement gaps, and write a new strategic plan that’s “bold but feasible.”

Rowe and other board members said they’re not sure yet whether they’ll write a new plan, or how exactly they’ll use the feedback from the listening tour.

Board member Angela Cobián, who represents southwest Denver, said she thinks the tour should be facilitated by a person of color.

At a panel discussion about the new report, Cobián spoke about how it should also be inclusive of people who are often left out of such discussions.

Board vice president Barbara O’Brien, who also sat on the panel, said the district’s ambitious goals are good ones. But to reach them, she said Denver has to stop chasing the next new program or initiative — what the report called the district’s “`kitchen sink’ approach” — and focus on executing a select group of strategies really well.

“We’ve got to get past this chasing the shiny object and focus on some key things that will benefit kids and teachers and implement, implement, implement,” O’Brien said, then “come up for air and see where we are, and learn and go forward harder.”

For one child fighting brain cancer, the simple act of a dog laying its head in her lap helped change the course of her life. After adopting her dog at the age of nine, Allison Winn decided to create a program to help connect other sick children with canine companions.

The Stink Bug program is a win all around — for the families and children, the dogs and the trainers, said Kelly Hansen of Denver whose daughter Mora, 10, has expressive speech disorders, known as childhood apraxia.

The Hansen family’s companion dog, Rafael C., affectionally called Rafa, has helped Mora become more social, both with peers and adults, including people familiar to her and strangers, Hansen said.

“The trained dogs help with confidence for the children’s emotional wellbeing and physical comfort,” Hansen said. “And that extends to the rest of the family.”

The Stink Bug Project is a program of Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation. It matches obedient companion dogs to families with a child diagnosed with a serious medical condition.

“We have seen how isolated and lonely the children can get when they’re sick,” said Lee Shaughnessy, the director of programs for Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation. “A dog provides unconditional comfort and love.”

The Stink Bug Project started nine years ago by founder Winn, 18, who has survived brain cancer. When she was 9, she got her dog Coco, a poodle that’s now 10, from the PrisonTrained K-9 Companion Program.

There were two other families at the prison picking out dogs that day, Winn said. The other children were playing with the dogs, but because she was sick, Winn sat off to the side, just watching.

“Coco was the only one to notice that I wasn’t playing with the other kids and dogs,” Winn said. “She came over and sat on my lap, and that’s how we knew we wanted her.”

Winn used the term stink bug for her cancer and chemo, she said, and Coco became her best friend — she was always there to comfort Winn after chemo treatments and radiation.

Because of this, “I wanted to help other kids get dogs,” Winn said.

So, she and her sister Emily, 16, sold lemonade and homemade dog biscuits to raise enough money to help another child with an illness get a dog. Today, 100 dogs have gone to families as a Stink Bug dog.

“No matter how young you are, never be afraid to change the world,” said Winn, a recent high school graduate who will be studying theater arts this fall at the University of Northern Colorado because of its dog-friendly campus.

The Prison-Trained K-9 Companion Program is at seven facilities across Colorado and has saved about 43,000 dogs since 2009 when the Stink Bug program began, said Darlene McInnes, the instructor for the program. The dogs come from shelters, rescues, puppy mills and private surrender.

But the program is also a benefit for the inmates, McInnes said. The dogs give them something to love and care for, she said.

“There are women in those prisons who, without having a dog to be with and train, wouldn’t be alive today,” McInnes said.
