Crepes `n Crepes Crepes `n Crepes closed two of its three restaurants last month, one in the Lower Highlands and the other near the 16th Street Mall downtown. The restaurant’s third location at Cherry Creek at 2816 E. Third Ave. remains open.

The restaurant first opened as a food cart in 2002. The Cherry Creek location followed two years later. The downtown location opened in 2006 and the Lower Highlands location in 2017.

BUSINESS OPENINGS Voodoo Doughnuts Voodoo Doughnuts may not have an official opening date for its new South Broadway location, but the company is inching closer to being ready. Last month the Oregon-based doughnut shop held a job fair for its location at 98 S. Broadway.

Sara Heise, the marketing manager at Voodoo, said that the company is looking to hire around 50 employees for the new location. She added that they have had 70 applicants apply so far.

Voodoo will be replacing Famous Pizza, which was located on South Broadway for 44 years. It closed in August last year.

Kisbee on the Roof Kisbee on the Roof, a new rooftop bar, opened at the Jacquard Hotel and Rooftop in Cherry Creek in mid May. The Jacquard is located at 222 Milwaukee St. Cocktails are $15. A selection of beer and wine is also available.

CHANGES The Corner Beet The vegetarian cafe will open a second location in Cherry Creek later this year. The Corner Beat first opened in Capitol Hill in 2014 at 1401 N. Ogden St. The new location will be at 165 Saint Paul St. It will feature many of the same menu items as the original location.

Voodoo Doughnut held a job fair last month for the company’s new location on South Broadway. Although the company does not have a set opening date, it is looking to hire around 50 people.

Free-Loaders A new bar-hopping service will be launching this month in south Denver. Free-Loaders shuttles are a free service that will have a designated route to four participating locations: Candlelight Tavern, The Kentucky Inn, Pub on Pearl and The Dive Inn. The shuttles will operate on Friday, from 3 p.m. to midnight. On Saturdays, Free-Loaders runs from 11 a.m. to midnight and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The shuttles have six seats.

Kadyluxe Kadyluxe, a dance clothing brand, is the latest shop to go from online sales to brickand-mortar locations. The store will open at 222 S. Broadway.

Kadyluxe, which has designers based in Denver and China, was founded by a former ballerina and dancer with the National Basketball Association, according to its website.

The company is headquarted in Denver.

Prestige Fitness Prestige Fitness will be taking over the former Safeway space in the Washington Virginia Vale neighborhood. The gym will open at Leetsdale Drive this summer. It will be the fifth location for the gym and the first in Denver.

The gym offers personal training sessions as well as group fitness classes. A basic membership at Prestige includes cardio, as well as access to the weights and machines, according to the gym’s website. Premium memberships also include classes and guest access.

In Bloom Saturdays On Saturdays in May, the Cherry Creek North Business Improvement District launched a new art project: In Bloom. Chalk artists created temporary drawings throughout the 16-block shopping area, according to a news release from the district. Artists from Denver Chalk Art participated.

“We want the community to rediscover their favorite walkable Denver neighborhood while it’s blooming in springtime,” said interim CEO Jenny Starkey in the release. “Live art demonstrations in new and surprising locations are the perfect way for us to welcome the changing seasons while highlighting the new additions and the local favorites in the area.”

Deviation Distilling The Baker distillery is adding a taproom to its lineup at 900 W. First Ave. Deviation Distilling began producing liquor there in 2017.

The taproom is set to open this month and will focus on the distiller’s line of gins.

Deviation Distilling began selling its gin in January of this year in liquor stores around Colorado.

High Point Creamery High Point Creamery, a gourmet ice cream shop, celebrated its fifth anniversary last month. The first location opened in the Hilltop neighborhood at 215 S. Holly St. The ice cream shop also announced in an email newsletter that High Point is now selling ice cream pints in all 19 Colorado Whole Foods locations.

“It was a dream of ours from the beginning, and to actually see our pints in Whole Foods’ freezers is a huge thrill,” the email said.

High Point also has a location in the Denver Central Market food hall in the River North neighborhood, as well as a location in the Berkeley neighborhood.

Denver launches food waste pilot program Staff Report On May 1, the city started a new pilot food waste program that included nine Denver restaurants as well as composting businesses.

Run by the Denver Department of Health and Environment’s Certifiably Green Denver, the program offers free advising to local businesses that wish to run more sustainably. Certifiably Green Denver will work directly with restaurants on an as-needed basis.

According to a news release from the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment, the city chose restaurants for the pilot because the industry is responsible for 25 percent of the food waste here.

It is the second highest generator of food waste after households, which generate 41 percent.

The program is part of the Food Action Plan announced by the city of Denver last summer. For more information on the plan, go to https://bit.ly/2M0MTA5.

“Working with restaurants on this makes so much sense because chefs already are trained to create their menus using as much of any given ingredient as possible,”

says Susan Renaud, community engagement administrator for Certifiably Green Denver, in the release. “Chefs also are such visible and valuable contributors to our community, and their attention to food waste will help us reach a larger audience.”

The following restaurants are participating: Ale House, Ash’Kara, Bar Dough, The Bindery, Black Eye Coffee, Little Man Ice Cream, Ohana Island Kitchen, Uncle and Wooden Spoon Café & Bakery.

Restaurants will be able to participate in waste audits with the city and receive training on food. The next audit will be held on June 24.

Alpine Waste and Recycling and Scraps, a local bike-powered business, will provide composting services to the restaurants.

We Don’t Waste will pick up food donations from the restaurants three times a week during the pilot as well. We Don’t Waste distributes unused food items to nonprofits and food banks throughout Denver.

K

aren Duell stands quietly in the main entrance of South High School as a swarm of middle school students enter the building. The students are about to tour the school to see if South is the right fit for them.

It’s a program Duell started at South shortly after her arrival at the school in 2011.

She had followed Principal Kristin Waters to South after the two had worked at Morey Middle School in Capitol Hill, where Duell had spent about 14 years. At the time, South was not a popular choice for parents living in the neighborhood.

As the community and family liaison at South, Duell set out to change that.

“South was a great school, but it just didn’t have any traction in the neighborhood,” said Carolyn Howard, a former South parent and former president of the Parent Teacher Association. “Kristin and Karen worked really hard

to basically bring out South’s strengths.”

The community liaison wears a lot of different hats.

After starting as a nurse’s assistant at Morey, Duell became one of the first to hold the new position across Denver Public Schools. The liaison does marketing for an individual school and also works in the community to create partnerships with local businesses.

While sometimes those partnerships mean monetary donations, they can also mean valuable programming and learning opportunities for students in the school. At South, which sits at 1700 E. Louisianna Ave., Duell worked with nonprofits like A Little Help, where students can volunteer and help local older folks with different projects.

She also created partnerships with the South Pearl Street Association, Denver Parks and Recreation, and more, which often lead to student internships, job shadowing and employment.

Cookbook archive helps students at the University of Denver discover new passions Carol Helstosky flips through a cookbook from the special collections at the University of Denver.

Helstosky teaches a food history class that lets students explore the tens of thousands of books and pamphlets included in the university’s food archive.

or students at the University of Denver with an interest in cooking, Carol Helstosky’s course Think, Eat, Write: Food History is an eye-catcher in a long list of class offerings.

But while classes discussing the role food plays in culture, gender roles and even the language of cookbooks lead to a new level of knowledge, it is the university’s archives that really open up the world of cooking.

Jacob Thielen, who took Helstosky’s class this semester, said the class “just kind of jumped out at me.” Most of the grade came from a final paper that required students to spend time researching in the archives. He was happy, he said, to see a professor revolve her class around a great resource for which student tuition helps pay.

“This is a resource I never would have come across if I hadn’t been in this class,” Thielen said.

About the archive The Cookery and Foodways at DU first got its start in 1985 when the university received a surprise shipment of books from a local cooking school, Helstosky said. The books had seen a chain of owners before landing at DU. The original owner was Margaret Husted, a Virginia native who collected cookbooks from across the country. When she died in 1980, the Boettcher Foundation purchased her collection and donated it to the cooking school.

When the cooking school closed five years later, the books made their way to DU. Since then, three other major cookbook collections from Coloradans Helen Dollaghan, Katie Stapleton and Betty Carey have been added. All three women were avid cooks.

Dollaghen was food editor at the Denver Post from 1958 to 1993. Stapleton hosted a radio cooking show.

Having the collection at DU has been a draw to other organizations or individuals looking to donate cookbooks, said Katherine Crowe, curator for special collections and archives in the DU library.

“As soon as you have a collection that people know about,” Crowe said, “you get lots of small donations.”

Although Crowe said Cookery and Foodways is far from the largest cookbook collection in the country, the university has amassed a unique group of works. Some are more specialized, such as a set of publications from the American Diabetic Association that focus on diet and nutrition. Others are works people may not be able to find anywhere else — handmade cookbooks from nonprofits or other organizations selling recipes as a fundraising avenue.

But unlike other special collections, where people need to wear special gloves or handle the books under limited light, Crowe said she likes to keep the books as accessible as possible to students and members of the public who set up appointments.

“It’s a really great collection for teaching,” Crowe said. “We try and make it so there’s very few barriers to access.”

‘Creating your own history’ For students, this can make all the difference in their final projects. Every time Helstosky teaches the class, Crowe said, students come in with ideas that help special collections staff find new hidden gems in the archive.

For Thielen, it was a book of ration tickets from World War II. “I’m a little bit of a World War II nut, so that was such a cool experience to get to see it and touch it,” Thielen said.

Laynie Smith, another student in Helstosky’s class, said she would often get distracted by the variety and spend a lot of time perusing the shelves. To her, the collection is a hidden gem.

“I feel like more people should know about the archives at DU,” Smith said. “No one knows that it’s there.”

For Smith, the archive was also a window into culture — how people cooked, what equipment they used, what foods were popular at the time.

“Because so much of the archives come from donations, it was really interesting to see what kinds of cookbooks people were collecting or what was popular over the years,” she said.

It was also a view of what hasn’t changed over time. Smith’s paper focused on the history of cake. Through the archive, Smith found that while some technology changed over the years, cake recipes themselves changed very little.

Helstosky is a history professor at DU. Since Think, Eat, Write: Food History is offered as an advanced writing course, she said she often gets a mix of majors in the classroom. Smith is studying geology and Thielen studies finance.

Most people take the class because they are passionate about food, Helstosky said. Some of the more specific topics students want to research lead down new paths.

“Sometimes, they’ll pick a topic that is ... very specific,” she said. “It’s fun because there aren’t sources that are written about this and so you’re creating your own history as you’re going along.”

Thielen took the class for personal reasons.

He enjoys cooking at home. And he doesn’t want his life to solely revolve around his career.

“If you only ever pursue that and ignore the things that give you joy,” he said, “you’re not as well-rounded as a person.”

Part of what makes the DU collection unique is the large amount of charity cookbooks it has. The books were often spiral bound and sold by nonprofits or different organizations to raise money.

Katherine Crowe, curator of special collections at DU, said that even after a few years of working with the collection, she still finds new discoveries on the shelves. She tries to make the collection as accessible as possible to students.

Washington Park teen awarded national writing scholarship

n short, poetic paragraphs, Caleb Pan captures the moments of his life from the everyday details to the raw personal moments. Writing, he said, keeps him grounded.

That writing recently garnered the Washington Park 18-year-old the Gold Medal Award from Scholastic, Inc., in their 96th annual Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

The award came with a $10,000 scholarship, which Pan said will go toward his college education. Pan was one of 16 winners in the national contest. He started writing in class when he was in third grade, and it became something he enjoyed as a hobby. He joked that he can’t write fiction to save his life.

Instead, he pulls from his life experiences, writing short vignettes on everything from using pens to the death of a classmate.

Writing about his own life means he has to be willing to be vulnerable, Pan said.

“You have to have more writing material and to have the personality to pull (nonfiction) off,” Pan said. “Not everyone has that, but I guess I do.”

Pan recently graduated a concurrent enrollment program at Arapahoe Community College which allowed him to get a high school diploma while earning college credits. He will study computer science at Colorado School of Mines in Golden in the fall. Pan first became more serious about writing in fifth grade after attending classes and workshops with Lighthouse Writers Workshop, a nonprofit that provides support and classes for local writers.

As part of his written portfolio, Caleb Pan created a visual piece. Each image matches with a short piece he wrote as part of the portfolio. Writing and collage is something that Pan likes to do in his spare time.

styles of writing. Lighthouse helped him find his voice, he said.

Pan also likes to play with the way his writing looks visually. Instead of a large wall of text, he will change the format. He will also play with visual media, adding collages to his work. For one series of shorts, he included a piece with five images, each relating back to part of the writing.

Pan has stubbornly submitted his work to Scholastic since he was 12. When he found out winners were presented their awards at Carnegie Hall in New York City, it became his dream to stand on the stage. He received a Gold Key award from Scholastic for his artwork in eighth grade. This month, Pan will fulfill his dream when he is given the Gold Medal Award on June 6.

“It feels pretty satisfying that my last year I was able to snag their highest award,” he said.

His portfolio, “Recalled to Life,” is a mix of the submissions he has submitted over the years. Pan reworked the pieces, using the new skills he’s learned over the years to improve and breathe new life into them.

He was inspired by Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities,” which has a theme of resurrection. He wanted to do the same with the pieces of writing he had done throughout his life.

“It was interesting to revisit myself in a way,” he said. “My entire portfolio is made up of just a bunch of losers really, and they were all given a second chance. That’s why I called my portfolio ‘Recalled to Life.’ ” At a young age, Pan was diagnosed with sensory disfunction, his mother, Paige, said.

Holding a pen was difficult for Pan. But teachers and mentors supported him. Writing on a computer made things a little easier

since it was difficult for Pan to hold a pen.

Having a supportive community really helped with his growth, Paige said.

“He had a lot of people helping and encouraging him,” she said.

Although Pan is studying computer science, he wants to keep writing in his free time. In its own way, software coding is like an art, he added. There is a satisfaction in building something. But it also connects him back to the child at heart.

“It’s kind of like playing with Legos again,” he said.

That passion is what helps bring happiness to his life, Pan said. Although writing started as something to do when he was bored, it is now a part of him.

“I do plan to keep writing because I need to keep my soul alive,” Pan said. “It’s something to keep me grounded.”

Accomplishing goals lasts a lifetime FROM THE EDITOR

wo years ago, I ran the Colfax Half Marathon for the first time. After a small collection of three-mile races and one very muddy six-miler, I felt like I was ready to take on the challenge of running 13.1 miles. I trained for months, building up runs from three miles to six, eight, 10 and, eventually, the dreaded 13. I hated just about every minute of it and said I would never make the leap to marathon.

It was probably the biggest lie I ever told myself.

Once I crossed the finish line at City Park in 2017, my life changed. It was the first time I had set a serious fitness goal for myself and had actually accomplished it. Despite how much I hated training, I couldn’t get over my sense of triumph at running the distance.

Before I had the chance to catch my breath, I was already asking myself: “What’s next?”

I set my sights on the next distance, doubling the miles I had just done — a full marathon.

Setting goals for yourself helps to build confidence. Running a half marathon made me feel like I could do anything. Having a goal also helped me to build focus. I had to keep pushing so I could cross the finish line once again. Keeping that image in my mind helped me when I wanted to just lay down and quit. Literally.

The joke I hear from most people is that training for races means that you start running and you just don’t stop. In reality, running is as much a mental training as it is physical. I’ll be out on a run, doing pretty well, when suddenly the thought “I still have

five miles left,” crosses my mind. For me, ticking down the miles until I’m done is the fastest way to kill motivation.

Marathon training is something else. When you work eight or more hours in a day, finding the time to fit in a 20-mile run is next to impossible. During training, my knees buckled. My emotions ran wild.

I was worried I wouldn’t even make it to the race let alone run another marathon ever again.

Having already run a half marathon was a lifesaver in these moments. When I stopped to think about it and cleared my head, I knew I had already made it halfway. I had done it before and could do it again. If I had the strength to run 13 miles, I SEE LAMB, P11

I am beyond honored to have the opportunity to serve a second term in service to the neighborhoods of City Council District 6. The next four years will be filled with challenges and opportunities all across the district.

Citywide priorities must focus on policies that: mitigate our collective impact on climate change; expand Denver’s inventory of attainable housing, especially for SEE KASHMANN, P11

hank you to Denver voters for reelecting me. In July I’ll accept the challenges and powers that come with a final term of official leadership, during a time of great prosperity and inequality.

Further down the ballot was Initiative 300, the “Right to Survive.” The supermajority opposed to camping on public property became evident months before ballots were counted. During my re-election campaign, many asked my position, stating their vote depended on where candidates stood. In response, I shared a detailed essay expressing my frustration with both campaigns’ lack of discussion on the many proven pathways out of homelessness, and described a detailed plan to implement more of those pathways.

Some voters appreciated the nuance, others wished I just said “vote no.” More than 80 percent said no. Now, what does it mean to “do better” and who is responsible for doing it?

Clearly, I and other electeds must do better. See the list below. But for every voter, what will each of us do better? What new ideas or changes will residents be open to?

What additional investments will we support with our private or public dollars? Or, will the post-300 world return to status quo with the opposition slogan long forgotten?

Below are initiatives being led by the city or my council office. We look forward to community support for these initiatives or new community-led ideas to expand pathways out of homelessness.

• “Supportive Housing” moves households out of alleys and parks and into

apartments with key, non-threatening services and no time limit. This model is more than 85 percent successful, and Denver’s Housing Fund has $50 million to buy land to build more.

• My office has Councilmember convened a stakeholder Robin Kniech group of neighborhood leaders — folks who have lived in homelessness, service providers and funders to develop a “Neighborhood Engagement Guide.” The guide will help conversations around new Supportive Housing happen earlier, in more meaningful ways for neighbors, with guidance on how to have a civil conversation and on how providers can build strong community relationships. How will communities welcome these new homes and neighbors?

• We can’t build housing fast enough to meet the full demand, so shelter is life-saving, though not often enough life-changing.

The mayor committed more than $10 million to expand day services to help folks in shelters access housing and $5 million for 400 vouchers to help folks access existing apartments.

• We need expanded funding for the services to accompany these strategies. Are taxpayers ready to invest more to imple-

our lower- and middle-income levels; not only get unsheltered residents off the street, but prepare as many as possible to return to independent living situations; increase the availability of mental health and drug treatment services; accelerate the Neighborhood Planning Initiative (NPI) designed to create small area plans to guide development in our neighborhoods; improve the system through which the city informs the public about policies and projects under consideration and through which the community lets the city know their thoughts on that agenda.

And that’s just for starters.

While we must maintain focus on the daunting day-to-day challenges of managing our city, unless we do our part to address the climate emergency scientists assure us is becoming ever more dire, we are ignoring perhaps our most compelling constitutional mandate to preserve life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I was pleased to put forth an amendment — passed unanimously by City Council — to the recently adopted Denver Comprehensive Plan 2040 and Blueprint Denver 2019 that added to both of these critical planning documents the statement: “The science is clear, our planet is facing a global crisis attributed largely to human behavior that is changing climate patterns around the world. This environmental emergency threatens to alter our normal landscape, limiting where we can live, where we can grow our food and how we are able to access natural resources. As we look to our future we recognize that reversing our contribution to climate change is critical.

When assessing proposed developments in the future, with that statement in our primary adopted plans, we will be able to evaluate plans as to whether reasonable measures are being employed to ensure those developments are doing their best to be environmentally responsible. Are green building practices being employed? Will Transportation Demand Management plans reduce the expected auto trip count?

Within the district we will see the beginnings of rebuilding large parts of the University of Denver campus. A new dormitory/ student union is under construction at Evans Avenue and High Street that will house 500 freshman students, providing more room for upper class students in existing on-campus dorm facilities. Many more changes will unfold in coming years. DU is positioning itself as a top-shelf 21st century university.

As currently scheduled, in early 2020, the eastern part of District 6 will begin a neighborhood planning initiative for Denver’s “near southeast” area which includes the Virginia Vale, Virginia Village, Indian Creek and Goldsmith (south of Evans Avenue in District 4) communities.

The NPI program, begun in 2017, is designed to generate critical small area plans for our entire city as expeditiously as possible.

These are the documents that take the broad principles in the Comprehensive Plan and Blueprint Denver mentioned above and tailor them to properly guide development on a local level. The revitalized Virginia Village/ Ellis Community Association will also have

Last month I crossed the finish line once again for the Colfax half. But this time, I shaved exactly one minute off my average pace for the race, running 10-minute miles the whole way. I’ve set my sights on the Boston Marathon, which has a qualifying time for women ages 1834 of 3 hours and 35 minutes. That means I would need to run eight-minute miles during the whole marathon.

For context, I ran my first marathon in 4 hours and 53 minutes, or about 11 minutes per mile. I have my work cut out for me.

But I’ve set a new goal: to run Boston by the time I’m 30, two years from now.

its hands full to assess whatever formal plans ultimately emerge for the former Colorado Department of Transportation properties at 2000 S. Holly St. and 4201 E. Arkansas Ave. I expect the developer to come forth with a request for Tax Increment Financing relief in the coming weeks.

A Verizon cell-phone tower proposal that surprised Virginia Village neighbors points out the need to revamp our community notification system for major projects. While it appears details of our existing policies were followed to the letter — if not the spirit — of the law, I have begun discussions with our Community Planning and Development staff to improve our procedures and postings so such projects never again slide under the public radar to the point of construction without the community having an opportunity to register their concerns.

Finally, from east to west and north to south across District 6, we will continue to work with Denver Public Works and the Denver Police Department to evaluate and remediate the never-ending traffic control challenges on our streets. That continues to be the number one area of concern about which residents contact our office.

hen Tim Roberts first became president of the East Colfax Neighborhood Association, he noticed something that didn’t sit well with him. Although East Colfax has a wealth of diversity in the community — many residents come from Latin America, Africa and Asia — the people consistently attending the Registered Neighborhood Organization’s meetings did not reflect the neighborhood’s demographics.

“The RNO is absent as far as those communities appearing actively,” Roberts said.

Considering that 40 percent of East Colfax lives below the poverty line and 70 percent are at risk of displacement, Roberts said, it was incredibly important to bring all voices to the table.

In a growing city, some residents feel that there are few tools at their disposal to create a cushion against the mountain wave of construction. But the city is trying to change that, creating community-based plans to preserve character and move individual neighborhoods into the future.

As the city works on one end, a group of residents, including Roberts, have taken matters into their own hands in the hopes of including everyone.

Creating a plan In 2016, Denver, which counts 75 neighborhoods, started working on the Neighborhood Planning Initiative. Neighborhood plans are meant to help guide the community in creating a list of projects residents want completed. Those could include better park space, a new grocery store or support for local business.

The problem, said JJ Folsom, vice president of Progressive Urban Management Associates (PUMA), is that 42 percent of Denver’s neighborhoods have no plan to speak of and many others have plans created in the 1980s and ‘90s that are sorely out of date.

With the Neighborhood Planning Initiative, city planners are dividing Denver into neighborhood clusters. For the last two years, PUMA has been working with the city on the plan for the east central region, which includes Uptown, Capitol Hill, City Park, City

PUMA looked into the economics of those neighborhoods: what businesses are located there, where people are working, and what need exists for affordable housing. The answers to those questions, and more, started the basis of the East Central Area Plan.

PUMA is also working on the plan for the eastern Denver neighborhoods, which includes South Park Hill, Hale, East Colfax and Montclair. The city is putting out a request for proposals from planning companies for each neighborhood, Folsom said. PUMA will apply for all the neighborhoods, he said, but it particularly wanted to create the east central area plan because its office is located there.

Many staff members working on the project also live in the area.

The company’s process has been to start with research and listen to residents through community open houses. Through online surveys and public comment, PUMA added suggestions and concerns into the fold.

MAKING A NEIGHBORHOOD PLAN

Research and public comment are only part of the process to create a neighborhood plan.

This July, Progressive Urban Management Associates (PUMA) will release a draft of the East Central Area plan, which will go through a final public comment round. From there, the plan will go to the city Planning Board and eventually be voted on by city council.

JJ Folsom, vice president with PUMA, said the plans for east central Denver and east Denver have followed this same process.

The city will hold a competitive process for each region of Denver neighborhoods, Folsom said.

For the east central plan, PUMA has split projects into a timeline, ones that can be completed in the next five years, and more long-term projects.

Additionally, Folsom said PUMA is including recommendations for implementing the projects, as well as potential sources of funding.

If new technology arrives, or there are other reasons the plans need to change, the city has the ability to do that, Folsom said.

“The plan can kind of evolve,” he said.

The plans “go through the planning board and they get adopted by city council. When a developer comes into the city with a proposal for a project, the city will point them to this plan,” Folsom said. “The beauty of this project is it’s community-led.”

The end result, Folsom said, will help give the neighborhood some teeth when it comes to new development going through city council. While Denveright city plans provide an overall plan for development in the city for the next 20 years, neighborhood plans are more specific. If any disagreements exist between the two plans, the neighborhood’s will take precedent, Folsom said.

“It will take the Blueprint Denver recommendations to a greater level,” Folsom said.

“This plan will most likely the be the plan until 2040. The next five years is the most important piece of this plan.”

Blueprint Denver is a specific strategy of dealing with growth within Denver’s neighborhoods, such as keeping building development near transit centers and focusing on design quality to make sure projects fit the context of certain neighborhoods.

Building for everyone Like Roberts, Folsom worried that scheduled meetings would not reach the full demographic of east central Denver. In addition to the planned meetings, PUMA did pop-up meetings to reach people in their daily activities at places like the Carla Madison Recreation Center near City Park. Staff went to churches and schools as well.

PUMA has received about 1,900 responses from the public and pop-up meetings, Roberts said.

“It’s going to where people are,” Folsom said. “I think we’ve had more input going to people doing these workshops than we have had in these public meetings.”

But as far as housing goes, Roberts said the city needs to be moving faster. In East Colfax alone he said he has calculated the need for 1,500 affordable units. But those projects often take a long time to pass city approval and then be built. Meanwhile, the city is losing those people as they move out because of economic challenges. The city can no longer take an “everything’s good” approach as small batches of affordable housing are approved, Roberts said.

“Everything’s not good, these people are gone. In five years from now they’re out,” he said. “If you really look at what the need is to prevent people from suffering in the immediate present, people right in front of us, it’s not happening.”

South Denver is the next area where the city will be running the Neighborhood Planning Initiative.

Amy Razzaque, co-president of the Overland Park Neighborhood Association, and her husband Rob Lovell, who is the community outreach coordinator with the association, said Overland is waiting to hear which district in south Denver it will be grouped into.

Overland is a unique neighborhood. The area is divided by major streets such as Santa Fe Drive and Evans Avenue and has few safety crossings for pedestrians. The neighborhood is also unique in that it does not have any schools or libraries, Razzaque said.

The neighborhood hosted the Grandoozy Festival last year, which organizers estimated drew 55,000 people over three days. Having that many people in Overland spotlighted

“The people coming into the area highlighted the need for the pedestrian bridges, and pedestrian and bicycle access and improved transportation in the area,” Lovell said. “More people in the area leads to more shops, leads to more amenities.”

Razzaque agreed and added several projects are already planned for Overland.

She’s hopeful the momentum from projects such as the planned pedestrian bridge at Jewell Avenue will interest people in a new neighborhood plan. She’s also hopeful the city can bring in the knowledge gained from those projects.

Razzaque and Lovell say inclusivity needs to be at the forefront of city planning. Working toward equity in representations drove her to join a Registered Neighborhood Organization in the first place, Razzaque said.

After Roberts saw a lack of diversity in his own Registered Neighborhood Organization, he decided to reach out to other neighborhoods asking if they saw similar problems.

Razzaque responded, and the two began to build a mini-conference called Into the Neighborhood.

“Our conference was more of a listening session to really develop the shared knowledge base, not only around the problems, but also around these things that are happening around the community that are working,” she said.

Honoring diversity key to community One concern that Roberts and Razzaque have is the scant resources available to neighborhood associations. The organizations are meant to give residents tools and a voice when it comes to giving opinions to city officials. But, Razzaque said that beyond the ordinance which allows the neighborhood organizations to exist, there’s not much guidance on how to run one.

“Community organizing is not all that intuitive,” Razzaque said.

Trainings may be something that help in learning how to actively involve more residents in neighborhood meetings, she added.

As the child of immigrants who came to the United States from Bangladesh, Razzaque said she is no stranger to the feeling of not belonging despite physically being in a community. Small things such as specialized foods from those countries, or businesses

that cater to specific needs, can go a long way in making a neighborhood more inclusive.

But more than making everyone feel welcome, having more voices at the table benefits a city.

Meeting people where they are is often the key, Razzaque said. Providing different language and child care services can also help break down barriers for people who otherwise might not come to meetings. Outside of these barriers, there can also be cultural ones, Roberts said. Some cultures just don’t make a big deal out of neighborhood organizing, he said. That is why building relationships within the community is so important, Razzaque and Roberts said.

Many of these communities also are often only talked about in the ways that they are vulnerable, Razzaque said. While points of vulnerability are important to note, she said, diverse perspectives that come with a more diverse community need to be celebrated, too.

“It is so critical to honor and celebrate how much strength and resilience they have, and really honor all the skills that they bring,” she said, “as opposed to taking this deficit-based approach.”

Equity and inclusivity: ‘My driving force’

triving toward equity for all people has become Amy Razzaque’s life.

Professionally, she is a program development coordinator for Sources of Strength, a national suicide prevention program in schools. Her work, she said, is the integration between education, mental health and wellness as well as equity and inclusivity.

“The equity and inclusivity piece is kind of my driving force in what I do in education and mental health,” she said.

Inclusivity doesn’t always mean taking large or groundbreaking steps, Razzaque said. Sometimes, those steps can be small. Bringing products or services in for specific communities can often make someone feel more welcomed. One example Razzaque used was making sure salons were more inclusive to the needs of the black community. Food can also be another opportunity, something Razzaque witnessed herself while shopping with her mother, who is originally from Bangladesh.

and seeing her just light up when she sees a fruit or a vegetable that you don’t typically find here, but she had in Bangladesh,” she said. “It’s this feeling of home and this feeling of being included and represented in this culture and in this society.”

In her home neighborhood of Overland Park, Razzaque said she saw older famillies losing their homes.

Seeing different kinds of inequity based on race, class or in this case, age, drove her to join the Overland Park Neighborhood Association. She is now co-president along with Mara Owen.

Within the RNO, Razzaque and Owen try to bring events to different areas in the neighborhood to ensure everyone is included. In other neighborhoods, this might not seem like a difficult task, but in Overland, the neighborhood is divided from east to west by Santa Fe Drive. Evans Avenue divides it into north and south sections as well.

Razzaque said that the other nice thing about working with a co-president is that she and Owen bring different perspectives to the table. The two work together to see what they can do to make sure all the demographics of the neighborhood are attending meetings or making their voices heard.

In Overland, there are a lot of different things going on, Razzaque said.

“There’s such a variety of need, but also a huge opportunity,” she said. “I think it’s so cool that we’re this microcosm of different types of homes and businesses and people who are looking for different things in their communities.”

But right now, Overland is in the middle of playing a catch-up game, Razzaque said. The neighborhood does not have any schools or libraries, which can make meeting in public spaces a little more difficult. Amenities such as grocery stores are not walkable because of major street crossings.

Issues such as affordable housing can also be complicated, Razzaque said. New apartment buildings are desperately needed to create more affordability in a lot of neighborhoods, but adding density is also a big adjustment. It means more parking. It can also mean displacement of other residents.

“It’s easy to talk about the need for affordable housing, and to talk about wanting to keep the demographics similar and things like that,” she said.

But action can be more difficult. “It’s complex and very nuanced.”

The low-maintenance

wonder of succulents S ucculents are more popular than ever right now — and with good reason.

Beyond their bizarre and beautiful shapes, textures and forms is the succulent’s utilitarian value. Succulents are some of the lowest maintenance GUEST plants. They save water and thrive in some of the COLUMN hotter, more challenging Nick Daniel spots on a patio or in a yard. Low-maintenance succulents are a must for the gardener who wants bright, colorful plants while saving water and time without sacrificing aesthetics.

Making a succulent container for a yard or patio is an easy way to enjoy these jewels of the plant kingdom. Outlined here is a crash course in creating a beautiful, thriving, low-maintenance conversation piece for your home.

But first, two important considerations: Choose between cold hardy or tender plants.

Don’t mix the two types. One thing to remember is you will need to bring tender plants inside before the first frost to enjoy them in your home for the winter months.

Second, and perhaps most important, do not overwater your containers. Let them dry fully between watering, and you’re good to go.

By using a small wood dowel or a chopstick, it is easy to test for soil moisture at all levels of soil in the container.

To begin, pick a pot. Terracotta bowls are great and allow the soil to dry uniformly.

Glazed pottery is fine as well, but the soil may take longer to dry. If you tend to be an aggressive waterer, start with unglazed terracotta.

Bowl shaped containers are the best for aesthetic and ease, but you’re not limited to them.

Next, pick your plants. Decide between hardy and tender plants, or segregate hardy and tender plants to different pots. Local garden centers have a plethora of choices for great succulents. Choose what stands out to you, but some that I recommend include: Echeveria, aloes, fire sticks and Kalanchoe to get started. Look for tall, medium and short plants to combine. Some of the colorful thin-leafed Dracaena make great complement plants.

Now, it’s time to plant!

Be sure to have a quickly draining soil ready for potting up your plants. Cactus and succulents soil mixes are easily found pre-bagged or you can mix your own, just be sure it’s well draining. Create your succulent arrangement any way you like, trying to include tall, medium and short plants. Water your container thoroughly after planting. After watering, add a top dressing of your choosing to cover the soil. This will aid in water retention, and helping to make water run away from the bases of the plants. You can top dress with anything — some examples are scoria (crushed volcanic rock), glass beads, aquarium rock and polished stones.

As far as maintenance is concerned, it’s time to sit back and relax. Succulents are low maintenance and don’t need a lot of attention.

Cold hardy pots can be kept outside for the winter, but need a somewhat protected location, especially terracotta or thin ceramic pots.

26th Furry Scurry fetches more than $720,000

T

he annual Furry Scurry brought some 10,000 people and 5,000 of their four-legged friends to Washington Park last month, raising about $720,000 for the Denver Dumb Friends League, according to a news release.

Fundraising for the event continued through June 4.

Dr. Apryl Steele, president and CEO of the nonprofit Dumb Friends League, thanked donors.

“We take in more than 50 homeless animals every day—we turn no animal away,” Steele said in the release. “Money raised at the Furry Scurry helps us provide medical care to sick and injured animals, behavior training that allows pets to be adopted more quickly, perform investigations of animal neglect and mistreatment, and supports the League’s overall mission to end pet homelessness and animal suffering.”

Landmark silos see last days on Santa Fe

It’s difficult to miss the large Rio Grande Co. silos that tower over Santa Fe Drive at 201 Santa Fe Drive. The green structure on top of the six towers has been a staple of the Baker neighborhood skyline for decades.

But soon, the silos will be no more. In April, Rio Grande Co. began applying for demolitions permits through the city.

Dave Wenman, president at Rio Grande, said the silos are made of metal, wood, concrete and rebar, and were built nearly 100 years ago. Over time, those materials have begun to deteriorate.

When the silos were built in the mid-1920s they were used to store coal. John Olson, deputy director of Historic Denver, a nonprofit that helps to identify and preserve historic buildings in the city, said the silos were the most efficient way of storing coal at the time.

Each time shovels were used to load coal, it degraded the quality, he said. With the silos, trucks could be loaded without shovels and then transported to homes in Denver where coal was used for heating.

“It shows that there was some innovation going on,” Olson said. “This was a way that as few hands needed to touch it as possible.”

In the 1950s when coal was no longer used to heat as many homes, Rio Grande began using the lower levels of the silos for storage.

The silos have not been used much by the company in recent years, Wenman said. That, coupled with the structure’s proximity to a light-rail line, drove the company to have the silos evaluated. Wenman said an engineering firm recommended demolition to prevent any unexpected events.

“We have been a part of the Baker neighborhood for over 125 years, we take our responsibility to keep our neighbors, employees, customers and community safe very seriously,” Wenman said in an email. “So we are acting on the engineering firm’s recommendation to remove the silos before something unexpected happens.”

In April 2018, the company applied to the city to have the structure be given nonhistoric status. The application helps jumpstart the demolition process. Through city policy, build-

ings that have applied for this status are listed on Denver’s website, informing residents and neighbors of potential demolitions. People can then decide to apply for historic designation through the city and prevent a demolition.

Abbey Christman, a senior city planner with Denver’s Landmark Preservation office said buildings must fit into at least two of three criteria to be given historic designation under city code: architectural, historical or geographical. Christman said the silos could have fit under all three categories. Since the Rio Grande Co. was founded in Denver in 1893, the business has been significant to the history of Denver and the industrial movement. Silos are architecturally significant because of their use of rebars at the time, Christman said. Geographically, the structures are a landmark to help people identify where they are in the city.

After Rio Grande applied for nonhistoric status last year, Historic Denver began working with the company to see if there was a way to save the structure. Rio Grande agreed to withdraw the application in favor of working with Historic Denver and the Baker Historic Neighborhood Association to see if there was a way to save the silos.

Olson said the nonprofit was grateful Rio Grande was willing to sit and have a conversation on the silos. Once an application has been filed, residents have two to three weeks to put together an application for historic designation. There is also a $875 fee for nonproperty owners. The short timeline is often a struggle for residents, Olson said.

“By withdrawing, it gave everybody the time to have a conversation,” Olson said.

Those conversations mainly revolved around finding a new use for the silos. Advertising was one idea that was tossed around, Olson said. But the size and shape of the silos made it difficult to find a use that fit for Rio Grande, and “use is paramount,” Olson said.

Wenman said the company also looked into restoring the silos, but the engineering firm the company worked with said it would be impractical. He expects the demolition will happen this summer.

Although Olson said he was disappointed they couldn’t find a use for the silos, he’s still hopeful the structures may survive.

“It’s not gone,” he said, “until it’s gone.”

How a building becomes a landmark

It started as a supply company that provided coal, hay and animal feed.

Plan for park access moves forward Denver’s 2A measure generates money to ensure parks are a 10-minute walk away

Last November, Denver voters approved ballot measure 2A, ushering in a new era for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The measure, passed by a margin of about 60 to 40 percent of residents, will raise the city’s sales tax by a quarter of a percent, with proceeds going to Denver’s parks system. Even with that small increase, the new revenue source will account for $37 million to $41 million in additional funds per year for the department.

That’s a lot of money.

Parks department officials say they know what to do with it.

On May 30, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was scheduled to have a hearing on the 5-Year Plan, which details a long list of projects, some of which have been deferred or delayed because of a lack of funding. The plan will move forward to City Council after the hearing. (The hearing came after this issue went to press. Go to https://bit.ly/2tbUEJP for an update.)

Councilmember Jolon Clark introduced the measure last fall in hopes of providing the department with the resources necessary to reinvigorate the parks system and get those projects back on track.

Having spent a lot of time in the Denver city parks before being elected to council in 2015, Clark said he knew just how bad the department needed the funding.

“I worked for 17 years for a nonprofit organization (the Greenway Foundation) that does a lot of work in our parks. I took kids on field trips to Denver parks along the South Platte River for years and years, so I worked in our parks on a daily basis,” said Clark, who represents District 7, covering the Platt Park, Overland, Ruby Hill neigborhoods. “I got to see, firsthand, all the things that we couldn’t afford to do and how hard we were working to scrape together funds and find grants to do some of the stuff we needed to do.”

Gordon Robertson, the department’s director of park planning, agreed and noted that as the city continues to expand — it’s grown by 20 percent since 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau — maintaining the system was only going to get more difficult.

“The reality is that we maintain over $2 billion worth of assets on behalf of the citizens of Denver,” Robertson said. “The ability to take care of them in a really responsible manner wasn’t happening. Our ability to maintain our park system was slowly but surely falling into disrepair.

“And while we were doing a good job of keeping things going, we weren’t able to keep up with the growth of Denver,” he said. “As new residents moved in, new needs were being created, and it was really hard to meet those new needs without the additional funding.”

5-Year Plan plans for future Now, thanks to Denver voters, Robertson and his team have that funding.

“We want to extend Denver’s park system’s legacy by taking care of what we have. We’ve been given some amazing parks and parks structures that have been built over the last 100-plus years, so reinvesting in the upkeep of those facilities and parks is critical and is a big part of the story,” Robertson said. “But the other part of the story is extending a new legacy for Denver Parks and Recreation going forward.”

That new legacy, as the plan states, will include the acquisition of new land, more robust and strategic planning efforts, adapting and preparing for a changing climate, expanded outdoor recreation programming, new and improved amenities, and a few signature projects, similar to the products of Mayor Robert Speer’s City Beautiful movement in the early 1900s, like the Cheesman Park Pavilion.

But one of the priorities, Robertson said, is simply creating parks in areas where residents, historically, haven’t had easy or safe access to them. The target is to make sure everyone is within a 10-minute walk from a park, no matter where they live.

“We’ll be working on projects throughout the city where we have a lack of access to parks,” Robertson said. “We have a pretty good map of where neighborhoods are that don’t have a 10-minute walk access to a park and we’ll be focusing on those areas to acquire land and create parks.”

That focus on increased accessibility, Clark said, means every citizen of Denver could feel the effects of the department’s increased budget.

“The entire parks budget last year was around $78-80 million. And this is an infusion of almost $40 million on top of that,” he said.

“This is a game-changer for our parks system, and it will be felt in every nook and cranny of this city.”

Park access for all ‘has been a dream’ Haley Jennings, who lives in the Cherry Creek neighborhood, could be one of those people.

“We live in an apartment and we spend a lot of times in parks, so I value it a lot, especially the green areas,” Jennings said. “If you move to Colorado, you’re going to want to live in this type of environment that’s nature-driven. And in apartment living, you don’t get that very often.”

Jennings specifically considered access to parks when she was looking for apartments.

“Living close to a park is important to me,” she said. “But it’s difficult because everyone wants

that, and that’s why it’s super expensive to live around one.”

But if all goes according to plan, the people of Denver won’t have to worry about their proximity to a park anymore, a fact that makes Clark, an architect of the plan, extremely proud.

“I was born and raised (in Denver), four blocks away from Wash Park,” Clark said. “I grew up with Wash Park as my backyard. We spent all summer catching crawdads in the ditch, climbing trees, playing on the playground and riding our bikes around.”

“I love this city,” he said, “and having the opportunity to make sure that there is not a kid born in Denver, not a kid growing up in Denver, that doesn’t have a park like Wash Park that they can safely walk to and use as their backyard has been a dream.”

Denver nonprofits Races like the Colfax Marathon help raise awareness for causes

Crossing the finish line into City Park after running a Colfax race is only half the battle for the 220 participating nonprofits — it’s also a marathon fundraising session.

The nonprofit Colfax Marathon Partnership has been holding the race event in Denver for the last 14 years. But 11 years ago, the organizers started to bring in charity partners for the first time, CEO Andrea Dowdy said.

Under that program, the Colfax Marathon Partnership invites nonprofits of any size to to sign up for free as charity partners. Runners, in turn, can sign up to run for a charity when they register for any of the events, which include a 5K, a 10 mile race, relay races as well as a half and full marathon. The nonprofits also can recruit runners for their cause and set fundraising goals for them.

One such runner, Eric Gutknecht, CEO of Continental Sausage, Inc., uses Colfax as an opportunity to get his whole office raising money for Denver Kids, Inc. Gutknecht is a board member with Denver Kids, a nonprofit which focuses on child education. The company has been participating in the raise for the last five years. This year Continental Sausage put together 12-13 relay teams to run at Colfax, he said. He added that it’s also a good way to bring the office together while also looking at fitness.

“They love the experience. It’s good for philanthropy and culture,” Gutknecht said. “It connects my passion for exercise and athletisim to philanthropy.”

Gutknecht said his office starts emailing people about donations for Denver Kids and their Colfax racing teams as early as November each year. He estimated that his office raised between $15,000 and $20,000 for Denver Kids.

The first year Colfax added charity partners, 41 signed up, Dowdy said. Although Colfax tends to work with local organizations, a few national organizations with local offices, such as the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Cancer Association, also joined.

For the past few years, Colfax has been working with about 200 charity partners. In recent years the nonprofits have raised an average of $500,000 each year in total Dowdy said.

“We want to give back to the community as a nonprofit and that’s why we have that opendoor policy,” Dowdy said. “Sometimes its the tiniest charities that raise the most money.”

Megan Monsees, a volunteer with the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, worked with Colfax this year to register runners across several of the event’s races, including the relay and half marathon. Monsees said several of their racers have run the event for the society before, but its also a way to gain new donors.

Huntington’s Disease, which is an inherited condition where nerve cells in the brain break down over time, is rare, Monsees said. Often people participating in the society’s 5K race at Denver’s Central Park in September know someone with the disease. It makes for a smaller pool of donors. This year, about 20,000 runners signed up for Colfax races throughout the weekend of May 18. Being able to raise awareness with those runners from across Colorado is key.

“With that many people in one place, and that many people that are in for different causes that are important to them, it’s getting that awareness out there,” Monsees said. “You reach a community outside of those directly impacted.”

Organizing a race can also be cost-prohibitive for some nonprofits, Dowdy said. To hold a race, organizers need to apply for an event permit. The city also requires fencing, security, portable bathrooms and cleanup for an event.

“You need a good number of runners to make that work,” she said. “There’s a lot of things that go into your financial model.”

Tagging along with an event that is already planned, such as Colfax, can help ease the burden for some nonprofits. There’s also tiers set up for extra incentives: having at least five

racers in the event gets a nonprofit a free tent in the charity area. More racers also means more opportunities for money. Colfax Marathon Partnership donates $100,000 through the relay event. Winners of the marathon relay pick a charity to donate their prize money to, Dowdy said.

Over the years, Dowdy said she has seen different organizations tackle fundraising at Colfax in different ways. For some, it’s just a fun way to engage with the community and raise awareness for a cause. For other nonprofits its a time to raise funds for their own events and programming.

“You can be creative when you’re looking at opportunities,” Dowdy said. “It’s been really fun over the years to see all the ways people use running.”

Children’s Museum feature takes fun to new heights

The colorful and towering structure rising above Interstate 25 behind the Children’s Museum has been inspiring wonder in passing commuters for months now — it’s called Adventure Forest.

And now, beginning June 3 when it officially opens, you can climb all around the darn thing, or at least send your youngster scampering up there to explore for you.

Adventure Forest is what the museum describes as “a brilliant, BOLD, 500-foot-long aerial adventure course and immersive art installation.”

The museum’s resident artist Wes Sam-Bruce used nearly every inch of the installation with his artistry. He describes it as: “Part Artist’s Vision, Part Naturalist’s specimen collection, Part mystic’s dream in a desert cave, Part explorer’s travel journal, Part humanist’s community project, Part child’s magnifying glass, Part storyteller’s living metaphor, Part poet’s love letter to the world...”

Whatever adults want to call it, the children who got to explore the ‘forest’ during a recent preview day declared it fun. In 20 minutes of checking out its many features, everyone seemed to be smiling.

The museum’s newest addition has been under construction for more than a year and was being dreamed up as a concept three years ago.

Chris Van Dyken, the museum’s director of exhibits, said Adventure Forest began as two separate concepts — a set of slides and a ropes course — that gradually merged into one and kept growing in scale.

“But even as we planned it,” Dyken said, “I wanted there to be another dimension there.”

That’s when Sam-Bruce began developing a rich backstory to bring the structure to life, and shaping its many decorative elements. He also wrote out a story for the forest, involving many animals of the natural world, humans and their complicated relationship. It is told on a series of 10 story plaques scattered throughout the forest, as well as in secret messages that inquisitive forest-goers can decode.

“This Adventure Forest, that is now alive, took a lot of work, a lot of effort from a lot of people,” said Children’s Museum CEO Mike Yankovich, at the May 16 preview event. He thanked all the donors and project partners, including the anonymous main donor.

Yankovich said that much of the project credit belonged to Van Dyken, who wanted “to take the notion of childhood, what it felt like to climb a tree, what it felt to connect with nature, what it felt like to have an immersive art experience.”

BRINGING NONPROFITS TOGETHER IN COLORADO

New organization looks to create a shift in childhood education

A new nonprofit created by three Colorado philanthropists aims to help children throughout their school careers and beyond by bringing other nonprofit organizations together.

PIVOT — founded by Broncos general manager John Elway and businessmen Larry Mueller and George Solich — will focus on the areas of nutrition, mental health and mentorship. It will start as a pilot program at the Girls Athletic Leadership Schools (GALS), a single gender-focused group of charter schools.

The name PIVOT came from the idea that this is “a slight movement of an existing organization,” Mueller said.

By bringing in multiple nonprofits, PIVOT can help schools focus on the whole child instead of the individual missions of specific nonprofits, said Mueller, the treasurer of PIVOT. One example Mueller used was afterschool organizations, which focus on what the child is doing while they are participating in their programming.

“I think they should also have a focus on what happens to those kids when they walk out the door,” Mueller said. “They’re dealing with many issues that ultimately affect how they do in school.”

GALS operates a girls-only middle school and high school and a boys-only high school, the Boys School of Denver. The pilot will focus on the girls’ middle and high schools, 750 Galapago St., Principal Carol Bower said.

The schools have 620 students across all three programs with 480 in the girls’ schools. Some of the mental health programming will also go into the boys’ school, Bower said.

Building PIVOT The three founders came together in May of last year to create PIVOT. Mueller is the CEO of Cuvée, a luxury travel company that hosts an annual charity fundraiser, Flight to Luxury. In September, funds from Flight to Luxury went toward PIVOT. The event raised $279,800, which GALS received in December.

PIVOT hopes to follow students not only through their middle and high school careers, but also as they continue into higher education and future careers, Mueller said.

“We’re already interweaving that into the school day,” Bower said of mentorship programming at GALS. PIVOT “brought up another layer for us to impact our students really well.”

For the nutrition program, the funds will go toward education as well as a garden at the school. The school and PIVOT are partnering with Big Green, a national nonprofit that brings gardens to low-income schools to help build a nutrition program. Garden spaces were installed on April 5 with students planting batches of lettuce and kale. Big Green received a portion of the funds raised in the Flight to Luxury event to install the gardens at GALS. Deysi Parga and Iliana De La Rosa are 10thgrade students at GALS. Parga enjoyed planting, saying it made her feel like she was part of the community. De La Rosa agreed, saying the nutrition and gardening component of the

program will help give her an understanding of where food comes from.

Both students have also been working with mentors through the PIVOT grant.

“It’s just free help, honestly,” Parga said.

“Scholarships, college. They train you for the future.”

GALS will be working with the Graduate School of Professional Psychology at the University of Denver for the mental health focus.

The school’s dean, Dr. Shelly Smith-Acuña, said hiring for the program is underway.

The university will give support as needed at GALS, which already had some mental health classes for its students.

“They really do a lovely job at looking at social and emotional development,” SmithAcuña said. “You have to work with the community to know what the community needs are.”

GALS is already teaching students that it is OK to talk about mental health, Smith-Acuña said. This helps students think about and learn to address stress and other struggles with mental health.

The fact that GALS already had some programming in place was part of the reason PIVOT selected the school for the pilot program, Mueller said.

“One of the focuses at PIVOT is to execute that strategy,” he said. “The opportunity is large, but what it really takes is money and leadership.”

n her first Mother’s Day without her only child, Maria Castillo mustered the strength to get out of bed and into the shower, where she wept.

In the kitchen, eight teenage boys and girls, friends of her son, cooked her breakfast. They added items to a bench, a makeshift shrine, with a few of her son’s favorite things: Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” and Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree.” A pair of lab safety glasses. A pocket-sized, dark-green Jeep — the same color and model as the one parked in the driveway.

“He was the perfect son,” said Maria, a small woman with a gentle smile. “He told me everything. He was my baby.”

Four days earlier, Maria and her husband John had lost their 18-year-old son, Kendrick Castillo, the sole fatality in the May 7 school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch. Eight other students were injured in the attack. The two suspects. both students at the school, are in custody.

Classmates say Kendrick charged one of the shooters to protect other students. That didn’t surprise the people closest to him.

“He was one of the most genuine and compassionate people I have ever met,” said Mike Shallenberger, an engineering teacher at STEM who taught Kendrick all four years of high school, as he sat on the Castillos’ back porch. “You don’t meet people like that but once in a lifetime.”

The afternoon of Mother’s Day, Maria stood near the front door of her southwest Denver home, tucked in a quiet neighborhood lined with modest single-family houses and spacious backyards. She softly greeted teenagers and parents and directed them to the living room, where John was telling stories of Kendrick to the intimate gathering.

Comfort food — trays of chocolate chip cookies, Kendrick’s favorite — and assortments of colorful flowers filled the kitchen and dining room.

They hugged. They cried. They honored Kendrick, a hero.

‘A lot of hopes and dreams’ Born March 14, 2001, Kendrick was an easy baby and boy with a loving temperament, his dad said. He was honest, not defiant. He respected his elders and always said “thank you,” “good morning” and “goodbye.”

His faith never wavered. Even at the fastfood Taco Bell restaurant, he would make sure to pray before eating.

“He respected and loved his mother so much,” said John, sitting on a chair on the back porch, tears welling in his eyes. “Any man in the world whose daughter ended up with Kendrick would, quite honestly, hit the man lottery.”

Kendrick’s love for robotics and engineering started early. As a young child he would dismantle his toys, inspecting every inner working, and put them back together in new formations. Whenever he’d get a new gadget, he’d invite his friends over to share in his excitement.

The father-son duo enjoyed weekend hunting trips, fishing trips and campouts. They never had much luck but that didn’t matter, as long as they were together. They spent many nights in the backyard, working on old cars.

Kendrick loved cars.

Kendrick’s parents, who both work in the hotel industry — Maria is a chef and John a chief engineer — prioritized spending time with their son. Eating meals together was important. The three of them would sit on the couch in the evening and eat bowls of ice cream.

“I don’t know if I will ever be able to eat another bowl of ice cream again,” his father said.

Kendrick attended Notre Dame Catholic School in Denver for middle and elementary school. When it came to choosing a high school, he wasn’t thrilled with any of the local, neighborhood options, which had a large focus on traditional sports. His passion was engineering and electronics.

On his first tour of STEM, Kendrick was like a kid in a candy store, John said. He was especially enthralled with the expansive engineering room. The Castillo family applied for the charter school, which uses a lottery system for enrollment, and won.

“His face lit up ear-to-ear,” John said.

Kendrick was on two robotics teams and part of the school’s Technology Student Association. Even in high-pressure competitions, he would stop what he was doing to help other students, said Jordon Monk, one of his best

friends, who was visiting Kendrick’s parents on Mother’s Day. Kendrick was a mentor, a friend to all.

After high school he planned to attend Arapahoe Community College for two years and then Colorado State University or the University of Colorado at Boulder. He wanted to be an electrical or mechanical engineer.

“He had a lot of hopes and dreams,” John said. “Most of his hopes and dreams always included the people he loved.”

When Monk wasn’t at his own house in Highlands Ranch, he was at Kendrick’s. The two would play video games, go for drives in Kendrick’s beloved Jeep and take a golf cart parked in the backyard for a spin. At school they’d often get the classroom off topic with their amiable banter.

“The only thing he loved more than his Jeep was the people inside,” Monk said. “Everyone went to him for help.”

‘We have to be better people’ John was eating lunch at a Chick-fil-A near his work at the Denver Tech Center on May 7 when a colleague texted: “Doesn’t Kendrick go to STEM? There is an active shooter.”

He called his wife and raced to Northridge Recreation Center, where parents were being reunified with their children.

He parked in a nearby neighborhood, jumped a fence and scanned the crowd — his anxiety skyrocketing. Cop cars were everywhere. People were hysterical. He texted Kendrick and called over and over. No response.

John, who coached a robotics team at the school, used an app to try to get in touch with the group of kids. Names began popping up.

They were safe, they wrote.

“Kendrick’s name never came up,” John said.

He and Maria caught word that Kendrick might be at a local hospital. A police officer raced them to Littleton Adventist, where they were pulled aside into a small room. A nurse asked them to provide any identifying factors of their son. He wore Ray-Ban reading glasses, John told the nurse. She said she was so sorry.

The Castillos went home that evening and collapsed on the couch in the spot where Kendrick used to lay.

“I felt like it wasn’t real,” John said. “We kept hoping we would hear his Jeep exhaust in the driveway.”

Part of him wishes his son would have run or hid, John said. But that wasn’t Kendrick.

He was selfless, valiant. In the aftermath of tragedy, he would have wanted his parents to think about the teacher in that classroom, the students in that school, his dad said. Kendrick wouldn’t want them to think about his death.

As the STEM community tries to make sense of it all, John doesn’t want to see people blaming guns or the school building’s safety.

The solutions are simpler than that, he said.

“We have to be better people,” he said. “If you are going to have kids in this world, you need to be all in.”

Shallenberger, Kendrick’s engineering teacher, echoed that sentiment. Now, more than ever, people need to put down their phones and be present.

“We just need to love each other,” Shallenberger said. “We need to reengage with one another.”

The grief is overwhelming for the Castillos, who say they feel like they’ve lost their purpose. What’s helping them heal is the strong support from the community. They want to hear stories of their son. They want those who knew Kendrick to reach out to talk.

They want their son to be remembered as the “extraordinary” young man he was.

“I’d like the world to know that he’s just not your normal person,” John said. “He is special.”

Messages of faith, hope as student laid to rest

More than 80 men, decorated in red, purple and green regalia, gathered in front of St. Mary Catholic Parish in Littleton. The Knights of Columbus traveled from across Colorado to honor Kendrick Castillo, a young man who aspired to be one of their own.

Golden rays beamed through a cloud-covered sky as a soft breeze blew through aspen trees, woven among manicured grass and headstones of granite, glass and metal. Colorado robotics community honors Kendrick Castillo FIRST robotics teams bring robots to memorial service

On the stage at Cherry Hills Community Church, a robot stood in honor of Kendrick Cas-

tillo, who was killed in the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting.

That robot was built by STEM Impulse — or team 4418 — a group of robotics enthusiasts that included Castillo.

“We want to have people remember Kendrick’s love for robotics,” said Miles Gregg, a 17-yearold from Highlands Ranch and a member of another local robotics team. “He wanted to become an engineer.”

Those teams are part of FIRST — For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology — a not-for-profit engagement program for science, technology, engineering and math worldwide.

Robots by teams from around Colorado lined the walkway to the church at a May 15 memorial service in Highlands Ranch for Castillo.

read. “They are all too small to encompass how senseless this all is, our pain for Kendrick’s family, team and community, and how much it hurts for us to lose a wonderful FIRST family member most of us didn’t even know we had.”

Castillo rushed a shooter during the incident and possibly prevented other deaths, witnesses have said, as the post noted.

“He is being rightly hailed as a hero,” it said.

The Center on Colfax announces PrideFest lineup Staff Report Denver PrideFest is returning for its 44th year, with events starting on June 15 and ending with the parade and festival at Civic Center park on June 16.

This year’s event celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots in New York City, which is considered to be the beginning of the modern LGBTQ civil rights movement, according to a news release from The Center on Colfax, a nonprofit that works with the LGBTQ community in Colorado.

On June 28, 1969, New York City police officers raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village. The raid led to protests on Christopher Street where the bar is located. A year later the first Christopher Street Liberation Day march was held. Cities around the nation began to hold similar pride events. The first one was held in Denver in 1975.

“This community gathering brought increased energy to the Denver LGBTQ community and one year later, activists moved to form what would become The Center on Colfax,” the news release said.

The Center serves more than 52,000 people in the LGBTQ community annually. PrideFest, a two-day festival in Denver, is produced

by The Center. The Pride 5K event will start festivities for PrideFest. The annual parade will start at Cheesman Park at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 16. For a full list of performances and events, go to www.denverpride.org.

“I’m really big on community involvement,” she said. “It’s a two-way partnership, it’s not just give, give, give to us.”

But working with the students at South is Duell’s favorite part of the job and what she misses the most. Duell retired last month at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.

Excited, but sad to move on For Duell, one of the strongest draws to South is the school’s diversity. Within the student body, 42 languages are spoken. Part of the job of the community and family liaison is to make sure students and families are comfortable within the school.

Often that meant driving across Denver to meet with families in their homes, Duell said. Learning how to listen was key.

“If someone is mad about something, you have to learn to hear them,” Duell said.

“They have the right to be heard.”

Howard, who will be taking over as the new community liaison at South this July, said Duell’s patience and ability to work with those around her was a big part of what brought Howard’s family to the school in the first place.

Howard’s oldest child started at South in 2012. A year later, Howard became president of the Parent Teacher Association. She worked with Duell to create a new mission for the association, one that focused on helping students and teachers thrive. In the six years that Howard was president of the Parent Teacher Association, she said that Duell only missed a handful of meetings.

“She was great about really embrac-

ing parents and also about being really available,” Howard said. “I don’t think we could have made near the dent in what we wanted to do without her.”

Although Howard said she knows she has big shoes to fill, she’s hoping to expand on and strengthen many of the community programs that Duell started. Schools, she said, can only provide so much. Going to the community can help bring in a “wealth of knowledge” to round out the student experience at South.

Working with Duell and the staff at South made Howard decide to change careers and embrace her new role at the school. But the students played a role as well.

“My involvement in the PTA, it really just reinforced my love of kids, especially this age group and this school,” she said.

“I have learned so much from these kids whether they’ve come across town, or across the world.”

As for Duell, she’s ready for the next step in her life. After receiving a business degree in college, she said she felt grateful to land in a career helping students in a school she called home.

But now is the right time to move on.

Her husband is taking a three-month sabbatical from work and the couple plans to spend the next few months in Duell’s home state of Florida. Retirement also means Duell can spend more time with her 14 grandchildren.

“Leaving South I have no regrets. It’s all been extremely positive,” Duell said.

“I know it’s the right decision, I’m excited about retirement, but I definitely leave with a bit of sadness and emotions.”

Dinosaur fossils found in Denver suburb Bones beneath construction site appear to be triceratops, researchers say

A dinosaur that once roamed what is now Highlands Ranch met the open air for the first time in more than 66 million years, after a construction crew discovered its bones at a construction site in mid-May. A crew from Brinkmann Constructors building an expansion onto the Wind Crest retirement community near C-470 and Santa Fe Drive happened upon the fossilized bones, said Salvador Bastien, a fossil preparator with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

“We’re really excited they realized they were hitting bones,” Bastien said. “Lots of times, people don’t notice, or if they do, they just keep going.”

Construction crews working on private property in Colorado are under no obligation to notify anyone or halt work if they find fossils, Bastien said.

Volunteer crews led by paleontologists from the museum will excavate the site in coming weeks, Bastien said, while construction work continues on other parts of the site. The site is not open to the public.

Though it’s a little early to say for sure, Bastien said the fossils appear to be from a triceratops, a three-horned herbivore that

The fossils are from the late Cretaceous era, and are likely 66 million to 68 million years old. Dinosaurs went extinct about 65 million years ago.

Triceratops are among the more common dinosaurs found in what’s called the Denver Formation, Bastien said. The formation was once a broad, forested river system, and triceratops appear to have been plentiful.

“Think of them like bison roaming the landscape,” Bastien said.

How the find will contribute to the scientific record depends on what researchers uncover, Bastien said.

“We don’t have X-ray vision, so we don’t

know what else is lying in that hillside,” he said. So far, crews have found arm bones, ribs, and what may be skull bones.

Colorado’s Front Range is rich with fossils, Bastien said, because the geologic uplift that pushed the Rocky Mountains above ground cracked open layers of sedimentary rock that once sat over them, providing remarkable cross-sections of geologic history.

“It’s a really exciting place to be if you’re a paleontologist,” Bastien said.

The find is exciting for Wind Crest as well.

“On behalf of the residents and employees of Wind Crest, we are thrilled to be part of such an incredible scientific discovery,” Craig Erickson, Wind Crest’s executive director, said in a news release. “We appreciate the invaluable expertise of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and our partners at Erickson Living and Brinkmann Constructors as we work together on this exciting opportunity for all of us to learn more about our earth’s rich history.”

Brinkmann Construction also thanked Wind Crest and the museum in the news release.

“This is a remarkable discovery that our team takes great pride in unearthing,” said David Rahm, a Brinkmann project director.

Bastien said he’s excited to get the fossils back to the museum’s lab, where volunteers will slowly clean them for addition to the museum’s collection.

In the meantime, Bastien encouraged locals to take a close look at their surroundings.

“This is such a wonderful area to find fossils,” Bastien said, “so keep your eyes peeled.”
