BUSINESS OPENINGS WellHaven Last month, a new pet care facility opened at at 2305 S. Colorado Blvd. in unit 110.

WellHaven, a Washington-based pet health care company, has been expanding nationwide. This is the third location in Denver. The facility offers annual exams and vaccines, as well as preventive care, surgery and more. For more information, go to https://wellhavenpethealthcb.com.

Hydrate IV Bar Hydrate IV Bar opened a third location this month at 2717 E. Third Ave. in Cherry Creek, according to the company’s website. Hydrate uses intravenous therapy to put vitamins and other nutrients directly into the bloodstream.

Prices range from $30 to $169 depending on the service. The business uses registered nurses for injections.

Hydrate opened its first location in Bonnie Brae in 2016, followed by a second location in the Highlands in 2017.

Amazon Books Amazon Books opened its first Colorado store in Denver in early March. The store opened at 2787 E. Second Ave. The online company opened its first brick and mortar book store in Seattle. The stores carry popular titles as well as Amazon’s electronic book reading device, the Kindle.

AKT AKT, a cardio dance studio is heading to Cherry Creek. The company has a location at 2445 E. Third Ave. listed as coming soon on its website. The studios are run as franchise businesses.

The fitness routines were developed by AKT founder Anna Kaiser. The Cherry Creek location will be the first AKT studio in Colorado.

CLOSINGS Vape and Play Denver’s second business with a public consumption license opened on South Broadway at the end of January. At the end of February, Megan Lumpkins, co-owner and chief operating office of Vape and Play sent out an email that Vape and Play was closing.

“Vape and Play is temporarily closed and is now for sale. We look forward to Vape and Play opening again to the public soon,” she wrote.

Vape and Play allows was located at 1753 S. Broadway.

A cook with Departure Restaurant + Lounge in Cherry Creek puts the finishing touches on trout tartare during a summer event. Departure closed in March. KAILYN LAMB Departure Restaurant + Lounge Departure Restaurant + Lounge, a modern Asian restaurant in Cherry Creek, closed its doors last month. The restaurant was located inside the Halcyon Hotel, 245 Columbine St. Departure was operated by the Sage Restaurant Group, which also owns a location in Portland, Oregon. The Denver location opened in 2016.

BoardLife BoardLife, a skateshop at 1775 S. Broadway, announced that it would be closing at the end of the month. The business has been in that location for the last eight years.

BoardLife announced the closure as well as a 50 percent off sale in February.

“Sadly, we are closing up shop and rolling on to new adventures,” a post said on Facebook.

The same message has been posted on the store’s website. BoardLife is not doing online orders for its final sale.

In addition to selling skateboards and gear, the shop made custom skateboards, and had someone on staff to tune up skis and snowboards.

MiddleState Coffee Formerly located in Baker at 17 E. Fourth

Ave., MiddleState Coffee is moving to a larger facility on Santa Fe. The Santa Fe location, 212 Santa Fe Drive, will have space for coffee bean roasting as well as a cafe. The larger location allowed the coffee company to sell wholesale coffee as well.

MiddleState sells coffee online by individual sales such as a bag of coffee, a sampler box, or instant coffee boxes. The company also offers a coffee subscription. People can choose to have one or two bags sent to them every two weeks or per month.

MiddleState’s website says they are building out the cafe, which should be open in early 2019. People can come to the location to buy coffee beans Monday through Wednesday.

FM Broadway Formerly the Fancy Tiger Clothing, the shop has rebranded to FM Broadway. The shop is located at the same store, 55 N. Broadway. The store held a launch party for the new brand in March.

Spur Coffee After opening a second location in Denver off of Lincoln Street in August, Spur Coffee is back down to one location. The coffee company closed its original cafe in Littleton in February. The Littleton location first opened in 2012. The Denver location is at 95 Lincoln St.

‘She was one in a million’

Diana Helper was a ‘tireless advocate’ for parks, sustainability

Diana Helper, a well-known community leader and passionate advocate for city parks who wrote for The Washington Park Profile for many years, died March 1 after a battle with liver cancer. She is survived by her husband, John, her son Stephen and several grandchildren. John and Diana’s daughter Katherine passed away in 2008.

Diana was 87 and moved to Denver in 1955.

She spent decades working to better the community in Denver. As a member of the Denver Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation (INC), she worked on several committees, including parks and recreation.

“Diana worked so hard on many of INC’s committees and left a mark on them all,” said Maggie Price, co-chair of the Parks and Recreation committee, in an email. “She was one in a million.”

Helper also worked with her Registered Neighborhood Organization, the University Park Community Council (UPCC). Her pride and joy was helping create Prairie Park at 2551 Buchtel Blvd. South. The park, which preserves natural grasslands in the area, was designated in 2014.

Diana’s crowning moment was probably when the city dedicated the Historic Buchtel Boulevard Trail at Prairie Park.”

Helper fought for 38 years to convert the

14-acre long stretch into official park land.

The area, which runs along Buchtel Boulevard in the University Park neighborhood, was first owned by a railroad company before being passed along to the Regional Transportation District, which then gave the land to the Denver City Council, according to the University Park Community Council website.

Lincoln Elementary students go Gaga Student council works to add ball game to playground

The student council at Lincoln Elementary School has been hard at work this year. Through events and fundraising, the group is bringing a new game to the playground — Gaga ball.

Gaga ball is perfect for the school, the students said during a March meeting at the school, 710 S. Pennsylvania St. It’s simple and easy to learn. Gaga ball is similar to dodgeball and is played with a soft foam ball. Players try to hit each other below the knees to get people out.

“It’s a game that they entire school can play. You don’t have to be a really fast runner or a really good shooter or really tall,” said Layne Ballenger, who is in fifth grade at Lincoln. “I go to camp during the summer and I had a lot of fun playing it.”

Tiffany Berry, the teacher who helps run the student council, said students have been working on getting Gaga ball since the school year started. She jokingly

KAILYN LAMB added that her son, Alexander, set the precedent after promising the game during his election campaign.

Lily Wynn, a fifth-grader, and Alexander, a fourth-grader, said they wanted to bring the game to the playground to have something new. After surveying their fellow

students, the council decided that Gaga ball would replace one of the climbing rocks in the Lincoln playground.

Council students work in the school store during lunch breaks as a fundraiser. They sell school supplies such as pencils and erasers, but also fun trinkets for

students — fidget spinners and mini-toy animals. Erin Walker, another Lincoln teacher, said working in the store helps to teach the students business skills such as customer service and counting change.

Funds earned at the store, as well as seasonal events such as the

holiday gift shop, go to student council projects. This year, the students are hoping to earn enough to build a 21-foot diameter court for Gaga ball.

Wynn, the student council treasurer, announced at the beginning of the March meeting that the students had raised $2,936.30. Janine Donelson said they were starting to get close to covering the $3,100 cost of the game. Donelson is another teacher who helps with council.

Part of the reason the game is so expensive, said parent Kelly Ballenger, is that Denver Public Schools requires composite board instead of regular wood.

Composite is safer and won’t splinter like regular wood, but is more expensive. Ballenger said they will have to ship in the material.

She added that they would likely need to bring community members together to put together and install Gaga ball.

Every year, the student council picks a project that benefits community organizations. In the past, Donelson said students have done food and penny drives. “This year, we decided let’s do something for our school,” Berry said of the council project.

University Hills volunteer recognized for her work in prisons

t one of its first book group meetings, 12 people wait eagerly as votes for books are tallied. Before the meeting ends, they will learn which books the group will read and discuss over the next four months. The books provide an outlet — the discussions are aimed to help the group grow — and the settings of the books provide freedom, at least temporarily, from prison life.

The nonprofit program is called Words Beyond Bars, started by Karen Lausa eight years ago when the former librarian was looking for a change, a way to connect her love of books to activism in the prison system.

“The program has gotten stronger and better and more transformative with every book we read,” Lausa, 48, said. “Through books, through reading, they (inmates) imagine a different possibility.”

Two inmates who have participated in the program nominated Lausa for the Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award, which she received in February. The Minoru Yasui Community Award is run by The Denver Foundation and recognizes volunteers working with nonprofits throughout Colorado.

The inmates from Sterling, Colorado wrote in their nomination about how the book group impacted their lives, and even the way they looked at the world. The two men’s names were withheld for privacy reasons.

“I have been challenged so many times in my preconceptions. I’ve been forced to look deeply into myself and my biases, things I’d been taught growing up and to abandon so many incomplete or erroneous views,” one of the inmates wrote in the nomination. “I’ve also developed the ability

On April 4, Stories on Stage, a Boulder theater group, is scheduled to perform “May My Words Fly Free,” which is excerpts from journals written by participants in Words Beyond Bars. Lausa also worked with the Lighthouse Writers Workshop in City Park West for the performance.

pick. I can definitely say that Words Beyond Bars is helping redefine me in many positive useful ways,” he wrote. “Ms. Lausa has encouraged me to become more than just a reader — she has empowered me to BE an avid inquisitive analyst of all that I read, see, speak and hear.”

Every two weeks, Lausa or one of her five volunteers head to six prisons throughout Colorado. In that two-week time frame, the group at that prison has read one book. Lausa and her volunteers then lead a discussion.

Most recently, Lausa’s group read “Educated: A Memoir” by Tara Westover.

The book proved to be a challenge for Lausa. Words Beyond Bars reads books in paperback since they are cheaper to get. But “Educated” has only been released in the United States in hardback. Luckily, Lausa was able to find paperback copies on Amazon from the United Kingdom.

“When I really believe that a book is going to be a huge impact on readers, I’ll do anything to get it to them,” she said.

To say that Lausa, a University Hills resident, loves books is an understatement.

At any given time, she’s reading about three novels. She also has what she calls a “bizarre hobby” of religiously reading book reviews. Lausa listens to podcasts about books and has websites she frequently checks for new ones. She uses this skill to help pick a selection of books for the prison groups.

Not every book the groups have read was a success. In fact, her first choice for her first foray into a prison, at Limon Correctional Facility in eastern Colorado, didn’t work well.

“Cooked: My Journey from the Streets to the Stove,” was written by Jeff Henderson, who went from drug dealing to prison, and then to chef at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. She found that the readers were not interested in reading about people who had been in prison.

“They blew me away with their assessment,” she said. “They’ve taught me more than I could teach them, that’s for sure.”

The success of Words Beyond Bars largely depends on the support of programs and education teams within the prisons, along with the buy-in from the staff, who select participants from the inmates, Lausa said.

Words Beyond Bars works with both men and women.

Now that Words Beyond Bars has been established in six Colorado prisons, Lausa said the program is hoping to expand to California. She has begun working with Leslie Schwawrtz, author of “The Lost Chapters: Finding Recovery and Renewal One Book at a Time,” about the books she read while serving a 90-day prison sentence in Los Angeles. Schwartz will be leading the Words Beyond Bars program in California.

Although Lausa has left the public library world, and many of her friends are starting to retire, she said she’s not finished working yet.

“I’m just getting started,” she said. “I’m fueled by momentum and ideas and I’m not even close to hanging up my book shoes.”

BOOKS LEAD TO CONNECTIONS Several criteria guide Karen Lausa as she chooses books for prison groups to read in her Words Beyond Bars program.

A key element: Books need to be readable and have a real story.

Although some may think books with story lines about abuse, crime or family relationships should be avoided, Lausa said she has found these are subjects that inmates crave most because, as painful as they may be, they help them to grow.

Lausa also likes books written by foreign authors or with stories that take place in other countries, which help teach about places and cultures around the world.

Lausa said she is learning about how to create a trusting community. She enjoys building relationships with her groups, often learning which have children or other details about their personal lives.

“Within the boundaries of prison, I have found a way to connect and create community,” Lausa said.

“The minute we all laughed, I knew that we would connect.”

‘A neat little block’ Bonnie Brae businesses embrace family legacies despite challenges

T

he sign in front of the Conoco gas station at South University Boulevard and East Exposition Avenue gives customers the daily gas prices. It also tells them the business has been owned by the Wilson family since 1942.

Across the street is The Saucy Noodle, an Italian restaurant run by the same family for 55 years.

And three storefronts north is The Campus Lounge, a neighborhood institution now owned by a family that has spent more than 50 years working on the street.

These family-owned businesses are among many on the one-block stretch of University Boulevard between Exposition and East Ohio Avenue that bring to life the sleepy residential neighborhood of Bonnie Brae. Some, such as the Pailet and Simon families, who co-own Bonnie Brae Ice Cream at the corner of University and Ohio, also work toward preserving the local business culture of the block. The two families own their building, as well as a few others on the east side of University.

Having older, family-run businesses also pays homage to old Denver’s legacy, said Erin Markham, co-owner of The Saucy Noodle: Knowing the same family has been running a business for decades is special.

“There’s comfort in knowing the same family is here,” she said.

Keeping the doors open isn’t always easy. Inflation in prices, decisions on whether children will carry on the legacy, and deaths in the family have all impacted these businesses. But the owners also think of their business as a home away from home, the place where they grew up.

And that, they say, is what makes Bonnie Brae such a special place to be.

‘A Denver jewel’ Bonnie Brae isn’t just special to business owners, but to customers as well. Bob Pailet, one of the co-owners of Bonnie Brae Ice Cream, said he often sees customers using the shop as a place to get together and spend time with friends. Gene Lang, a Hilltop resident stopping in for some ice cream, said he enjoyed coming to Bonnie Brae for its mix of family-owned businesses. He also liked the size of the nieghborhood.

“It’s not too dense,” Lang said.

The Nickless family is no stranger to the Bonnie Brae business scene, despite having just taken over ownership of The Campus Lounge about six months ago. Dan Nickless grew up running in the alleys while his dad ran the Esquire Market, which the family owned for 56 years.

Back then, Dan’s father, R. Walker, knew all his customers. Now that Dan and his son Jeff own The Campus Lounge, they hear stories from people coming in who remember R. Walker. Dan felt a connection with the neighborhood sports bar from the days of his childhood. His father sold steaks to The Campus Lounge from his grocery store, and his older brothers considered it their neighborhood hangout.

The Campus Lounge itself has its own storied history and was run for nearly 40 years

by University of Denver alum Jim Wiste.

Wiste sold the bar in 2016 after owning it for 40 years. Late last year, it was resold to the Nickless family, who wanted to preserve the legacy of the 70-year-old bar.

“This neighborhood is a Denver jewel.

It’s just a very wonderful place to live and grow up,” Dan said. “It’s a neighborhood that deserves to have some tradition.”

Pailet, who has co-owned the Bonnie Brae Ice Cream shop with his wife Cindy, and business partners Ken and Judy Simon since 1986, agreed the block is a special place to run a business. Back then “we didn’t know how lucky we would be,” he said of buying a business in the neighborhood.

But the two couples quickly realized they had landed in a great place, Pailet said. In the 32 years since Bonnie Brae Ice Cream opened, Pailet said they have given jobs to 500 teenagers. All of the ice cream and waffle cones are made in-house. Although the owners have been tempted to open more locations, Pailet said that, in the end, they decided they weren’t going to find another Bonnie Brae.

“We’re doing the best we can with what we have,” he said.

Over the years, the Simon and Pailet families have begun to buy some of the properties on the east side of University on the Bonnie Brae block. In addition to renting to local businesses, Pailet said owning the buildings helps “preserve the character of the neighborhood.” Pailet said the families won’t sell to developers who plan on changing the layout of Bonnie Brae.

Carrying on the business Across the street from The Campus Lounge is the Conoco gas station run by the Wilson family.

Kenny Wilson is named after his grandfather, who was the first in the family to run the station. In the 1940s, small gas stations were more popular, Wilson said, and Bonnie Brae boasted two other gas stations. COURTESY PHOTO last several years, but he’s spent most of his life there. After trying out a different career for a short while, Wilson began working at Conoco again with dad, Gene, and his uncle. One morning in May 2012, Wilson was working at the station when his mother called to say his father had died. Gene had spent more than 40 years working at the station.

Many of Gene’s employees had kept in touch with him over the years. And they would tell the family they learned how to run an honest business from Gene, Wilson said. Like Wilson, many of them grew up inside the walls of the Conoco.

Working at the gas station helps him feel connected to his dad, Wilson said.

“It feels like he’s still here,” he said. “It sure helps if you’ve got family to carry (the business) on.”

The Bonnie Brae Tavern is another location that has benefitted from generations of one family running the business. The restaurant first opened in 1934 and since then, four generations of the Dire family have run the business, according to its website. The owners could not be reached for comment.

The restaurant was opened by Carl and Sue Dire when the Bonnie Brae neighborhood was in the early stages of development, according to an article written by Angela Dire on the tavern’s website. The Dires worked through the Great Depression and World War II, and saw the neighborhood build up around them. When Carl died in 1982, and again when Sue died in 2002, Angela wrote that the community came to support the Dires at the Bonnie Brae Tavern.

“You have been there for us as much as we’ve been there for you,” Angela wrote.

‘An incredible gift’ The Saucy Noodle was a pizzeria when Sam Badis, Markham’s grandfather, bought it in 1964. Markham was raised in the restaurant by her grandfather, whom she adored.

“I loved his big heart,” she said.

But his kindness had a downfall. Badis gave everything to his employees, Markham said. He didn’t have enough leftover for insurance to cover the restaurant — or money for himself.

“When my grandfather died, he died with nothing,” she said.

Markham and her husband Nathan bought The Saucy Noodle after her grandfather died in 1998. At the time, the restaurant had just one room and a handful of tables.

The couple tripled the size of the restaurant, adding two new rooms.

But shortly after the renovation a fire in the restaurant forced the Markhams to close and re-renovate. Markham was also pregnant with her daughter at the time. Many of the staff at the restaurant volunteered to help renovate. Although Markham said they had to get new jobs while The Saucy Noodle was closed, every single employee returned once the restaurant reopened.

“It was an incredible gift to me,” she said.

As a celebration, customers who ate there on the day The Saucy Noodle reopened signed their wine bottles. The bottles still line a shelf near the ceiling of the restaurant. In a business as busy as the restaurant industry, Markham said she is touched to know people willing to “fight that good fight with me.”

‘A sense of community’ Although working in restaurants is all Markham has known since she was a child, she is unsure if she wants her own children to work in the industry.

“I don’t know. It’s hard to say, that whole legacy thing,” she said. “Unfortunately, legacies can’t live on in this way forever. I think 55 years, it’s certainly become a landmark. If it does go away, it won’t go away without memories.”

Bonnie Brae is special to those who work there, but it’s not without its struggles in a growing Denver. Markham said the area used to get more foot traffic than it does now. Marketing to millennials also is a difficult task, she said.

Christian Silver, who works in the Bonnie Brae area, said he thinks a few of the businesses on the block are trying to bring in younger clientele.

Bonnie Brae is the type of neighborhood that “makes old people feel comfortable,” because the businesses know their regulars, Silver said. But places such as the ice cream shop, which caters to families, and Campus Lounge, a bar with new ownership, are bringing in new and younger customers, he noted.

Markham is hopeful that people will see the value of keeping family-owned businesses like those on Bronnie Brae.

She believes the neighbors value them as well.

“They understood the importance of keeping these businesses alive,” she said.

“Denver’s been an amazing gift to us.”

Wilson agreed.

“We can really feel a sense of community because we get to know our customers really well,” he said. “It’s a neat little block.”

Raising a community Local shopping center looks to engage residents with new events

A six-decade-old shopping center on Colorado Boulevard is expanding its summer programming in the hopes of becoming a new community gathering place in University Hills.

The University Hills Plaza is a large open-area shopping center with 22 tenants at 2500 S. Colorado Blvd. Robin Singer-Starbuck, who does marketing with the plaza, grew up in the area and wanted to see the shopping center take more of a role in community involvement. Two years ago, she approached owners with the idea, proposing a farmers’ market and summer events at University Hills Plaza.

“I wanted to give people a reason to shop in their neighborhood,” Singer-Starbuck said. “I believed then, and I believe now, that the shopping center needs a personality.”

Last year, the University Hills Plaza launched a new farmers’ market in the summer. Singer-Starbuck said the event had 35 vendors that were mixed between retail and food. On its first day about 800 people attended. The remaining farmers’ market days in 2018 averaged 400 people, she said.

In addition to the market, the plaza hosted several one-time events, such as summer concerts and an event with the Castle Rock Car Show. The events allow the plaza to partner with its tenants, who have a merchants’ association. Sallie Kashiwa, the owner of Timbuk Toys, held a Hot Wheels Derby to go along with the car show, for example.

Kashiwa said she is excited to expand on the derby from last year. She added that she can see the plaza events growing once the word gets out about them.

“It always takes a while to get this kind of thing really going,” she said. “This year we’ve got a much better sense of what our opportunities are.”

The farmers’ market is expanding. Singer-Starbuck said there are now 50 vendors for the 2019 season, which primarily

This year’s farmers’ market at University Hills Plaza will run on Saturdays from June through Oct. 19. The plaza is located at 2500 S. Colorado Blvd.

She added that University Hills Plaza partnered with organizations like Denver Urban Gardens and Big Green, both nonprofits with a focus on gardening education. The organizations will bring community gardens in from six local schools. The schools will keep 100 percent of the proceeds from goods sold at the farmers market, Singer-Starbuck said.

Other organizations, such at the YMCA and library across the street from the plaza, will also host booths at the market.

“It’s so many layers of engagement and participation,” Singer-Starbuck said. “It’s a way to tie us all together.”

Emily Walker, the president of the University Hills Neighborhood Association, said events are not only a great way to bring community together, but also help support small local businesses. Her aunt and uncle helped to start the farmers’ market in Cherry Creek 35 years ago. Her mom still runs a concession booth at the market as well.

“Having that kind of neighborhood marketplace, I think, is a really important component of a community,” Walker said.

She added that community events help people to recognize their neighbors and give them an opportunity to meet. Walker will be following in her mother’s footsteps and will be running a concession booth at the University Hills Plaza market this year.

VOICES ‘Soul-nourishing’ music to live by

M

usic has filled every corner of my life since I was a child.

I can remember early mornings at my dad’s house. I was supposed to be awake and getting ready for school. Instead, I turned my alarm off and pulled the covers over my head. I am not a morning person and likely never will be.

But my dad had a strategy for this. He would walk over to our living-room stereo, pop in “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and blast “Good Morning, Good Morning.” Then he’d throw the door of my room open and say “Arise, Sir Loin of Beef.” (For those of you who don’t know, that’s an old Bugs Bunny gag.)

Both of my parents are big music lovers.

My dad was the district manager for a record store chain back in the 1990s, and my mom is an avid musical theater fan. Singing out loud was not an unusual occurrence in either of their houses, and is now something I joyfully do in my own home — much to my boyfriend’s annoyance.

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t listen to music.

I listen to a classical music station at work. I flip through radio stations while I drive and have a large stack of CDs on hand should I get annoyed with commercials. I have three pairs of headphones — one each for home, the office and my purse. This way, I always have a way to listen to tunes.

Much of this comes from my dad. He grew up in a tiny town in southern Illinois, and music was his escape. He and his friends would frequently drive to Springfield and spend hours combing through records.

Some of the bands my dad already knew. Others, he picked simply because he liked the album cover. To this day, I have yet to meet a person who knows more about music than my dad.

Famed neurologist and author Oliver Sacks was also a music lover. During his long career studying the brain, he frequently looked into how music impacted the mind. His book “Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain” talks about several conditions in which music made an impact — brain development, memory and strange cases where people hear music in their heads. The book also talks about how Sacks got his own love of music from his parents.

Last month, I wrote about self-care for my column.

For me, listening to music is one of the best forms of self-care I know. Certain songs still give me chills when I listen to them, even if I’ve listened to them hundreds of times.

In “Musicophilia,” Sacks had this to say about how the art form impacts our emotions: “Music, uniquely among the arts, is both completely abstract and profoundly emotional. It has no power to represent anything particular or external, but it has a unique power to express inner states or feelings. Music can pierce the

heart directly.”

We all have artists to whom we can relate: Ones that help us get through hard times, cheer us up on sad days or just make us feel like we want to dance.

After Tom Petty died in 2017, I texted my dad to say I was bummed. His response was “At every point in my life, high or low, there was always great Tom Petty music to get me through. And even though he’s gone now, there still is.”

David Bowie is my artist of choice. For nearly 50 years, Bowie made music across genres and for every mood. I love to dance to “Golden Years” and “Never Let Me Down.” On sad days I listen to “Dollar Days,” a song from the “Blackstar” album that Bowie released days before his death in 2016. I’m listening to “Starman” while writing this column.

In 2002, during an interview with LiveWire, Bowie had this to say about music: “On the other hand, what I like my music to do to me is awaken the ghosts inside of me. Not the demons you understand, but the ghosts.”

Though our favorite artists may be gone, they still contribute to what my dad calls “the soul-nourishing power of music.” Music connects people. It heals them.

When I’ve had a bad day, I put on show tunes and sing my heart out. I’ve made lifelong friendships based on people’s similar tastes in bands. No matter where I am, or how I feel, music grounds me and makes me feel at peace.

Public Works procedures aim to lessen construction impact

Big buildings, big business, big basketball blunder QUIET DESPERATION

He dribbles behind his back — it’s something to see — and enters the lane. The crowd is going crazy. Two seconds. One second. He goes to the basket for an awkward right-handed layup and ...”

The men’s college basketball season began last November and it will end in April at the intimate U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The stadium has a capacity of 66,655. It’s where the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Gophers play their home football games.

The stadium opened in 2016.

Despite requests for a “bird-friendly” exterior design by the Audubon Society and others, the stadium’s designers used highly reflective glass for “aesthetic reasons.”

The stadium is in the Mississippi Flyway route, and resulting bird deaths are double any other building in Minneapolis.

The women’s college basketball season will end in April as well, at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

The arena opened in 1996 (as the Ice Palace), and seats 20,500 for basketball, and it is a much more sensible choice.

Some fans at the U.S. Bank Stadium will be so far away from the action that they won’t know who won until they get home that night.

I have attended regional and Sweet Sixteen games in the past, and even a Final Four, when the Final Four games were played in basketball-

There is always some local talent in the tournament games. I think most of us remember where Chauncey Billups went to high school. If not, the answer is at the end. Billups could have gone anywhere he wanted to, and played with a more

In addition to the policy updates, later this spring, Denver Public Works will also propose changes to Denver’s Rules and Regulations for permitting construction projects in the public right-of-way. The simple violet marks springtime in gardens

D

uring springtime in Colorado, gardens are suddenly filled with an explosion of flowers and blossoms that bring us excitement after the long winter.

Among all this cheerfulness, the violet — with its simple appearGUEST ance and aromatic fragrance — is COLUMN one of the plants most loved and Ebi Kondo cultivated by people for centuries.

‘Longing for Spring’ is a song composed by Amadeus Mozart about a little boy who is looking forward to seeing the flowering violets in his garden. Probably, this violet was the most common violet we often see in our garden: Sweet Violet (Viola odorata).

This perennial ground cover was traded in markets in Athens as long ago as 400 B.C. It was sold for its fragrance and edible leaves and flower, although the seeds and roots of violets are not edible.

In the Middle East, the flowers were made into candies which were enjoyed by elites. Much later, in the 19th century, Frederic Chopin favored the sugar-coated violet flower candies every morning in a cup of hot chocolate to start his day (no wonder he came up with copious amounts of his wonderfully romantic creations).

Unlike its popular ornamental annual cousins Pansy (Viola x wittorokiana) and Johnny-Jump-Up (Viola tricolor), Viola odorata has gotten a bad rap from some homeowners as it has a habit of spreading by seeds and runners. However, the popular cultivar ‘Konigin Charlotte’ with its classic violet flower and `Rosina’ with pink flower are the cultivar relatively well behaved in the garden. I personally never had a problem with this violet as long as I monitor my gardens often and confine them in the right spots with sun to semi-shade. We sometime see the weedy violet with lavender and white bi-colored flower take over turf areas. We think it is an unidentified

hybrid of Viola odorata. Do not plant this type in your garden.

The `Purple leaved Labrador violet’ (Viola labradorica purpurea) has a simpler appearance yet possess beautiful purple leaves adding color to shade gardens even after its flowers are gone in late spring. I have been warned this violet might spread in the garden, however, my coworkers and I think it was confused with Viola riviniara that has identical looks and a vigorous spreading habit.

Contrary to these testimonials, I have had a hard time keeping `Purple leaved Labrador violet’ in my gardens, as they have often disappeared over the years, regardless of the fact I’ve given them adequate moisture and sheltered light in semi-shaded areas. When I acquire Viola labradorica purpurea, I always make sure to get it from reputable sources so as not to be mixed up with a wild impersonator.

The less fragrant V. Corsica is an excellent violet for Colorado gardens because it is drought tolerant and has a longer flowering performance with blueish purple showy flowers in sunny spots in the gardens. It is part of the Plant Select® program.

Although much simpler in its appearance, one of the quintessential violets is V. adunca. This North American native perennial can be spotted easily in the forest and meadows while hiking as a sign of the arrival of the short summer season in the Colorado Montane and Alpine.

There are about 600 species of violets around the globe from temperate climate to desert, even in steppe. Many of them are a flower well worth enjoying. As a famous quote by Mark Twain says: “Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.”

The False Choice of Initiative 300 Denver voters will be faced with a false choice in May, when they are asked to vote on Initiative 300.

The ballot language reads: Shall the voters of the City and County of Denver adopt a measure that secures and enforces basic rights for all people within the jurisdiction of the City and County of Denver, including the right to rest and shelter oneself from the elements in a nonobstructive manner in outdoor public spaces; to eat, share accept or give free food in any public space where food is not prohibited; to occupy one’s own legally parked motor vehicle, or occupy a legally parked motor vehicle belonging to another, with the owner’s permission; and to have a right and expectation of privacy and safety of or in one’s person and property?

This is a false choice and offers no hope. While the proponents would like you to believe that choosing yes

would offer the homeless community safety and shelters. This initiative says nothing about providing funding or support for affordable housing, shelters, outreach services, mental health counseling or job training for people experiencing homelessness.

This initiative opens our open spaces to unregulated use and allows people to camp indefinitely in and around Denver, this includes parks, sidewalks, alleys.

Instead the focus will be sheer physical survival in outdoor spaces that are not suitable for human habitation...This minimal concept of ‘survival’ provided by the initiative offers little to improve the welfare or security of the unsheltered homeless community in Denver.

Individuals experiencing homelessness will remain susceptible to volatility of life on the streets—exposed to extreme climate, violence, injury, exploitation, and even death. The HLC believes

there are more narrowly tailored policy alternatives that would protect individuals experiencing homelessness from discrimination, enhance their trust of law enforcement and service providers, and reduce interactions with the criminal justice system.

I don’t disagree that the homeless community and service providers need better resources and the city government should be leading on solutions for the health and safety of the entire community including the homeless community. But Initiative 300 is a false choice for a community that needs hope.

I urge all Denver voters to vote no on initiative 300 this May.

This year’s Denver Restaurant Week brought in millions in revenue

Restaurants and diners alike benefit from a 10-day event that highlights culinary business across the metro area: From Feb. 22 to March 3, diners snagged deals on some of the best restaurants throughout the area as the Mile High City celebrated 15 years of Denver Restaurant Week this year.

Denver Restaurant Week offers multi-course options to diners throughout the Front Range, with options at $25, $35 and $45.

Although considered a staple now, Denver Restaurant Week started as a way for the city to prove itself after a reader poll in “Travel + Leisure” magazine placed Denver 24th out of the top 25 dining scenes. The poll was a blow to lovers of the culinary scene, so staff at Visit Denver, Eat Denver and other community organizations formed a partnership, said Richard Scharf, president and CEO of Visit Denver, The Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“Denver Restaurant Week originally sought to change that impression, to showcase what we had to offer as a city,” Scharf said. “Now, it’s become a real celebration of what we have today.”

In 2005, when the event first launched, 83 restaurants participated. This year, Denver Restaurant Week tripled in size with 251 restaurants in the metro area. Visit Denver did not have an official count, but it estimated that hundreds of thousands of meals were served, with an economic impact reaching into the millions.

Restaurant owners such as Gene Tang, owner and chef at 1515 Restaurant in Denver,

a fine dining restaurant, said the event is an opportunity to bring new customers in the door.

“People have a perception of us being expensive. This is a good chance for them to try us out,” he said. “Restaurant week is great for, I think, the restaurants and the people of Denver — people get to try the restaurant, and we get exposed to more people.”

The first year was a bit of an experiment, said Beth Gruitch, co-owner of Crafted Concepts, which owns five restaurants including Bistro Vendome and Rioja. Both restaurants participated in the first Denver Restaurant Week. Customers didn’t know about it the first year, and Gruitch said she and Gruitch her business partner were unsure how their special restaurant week menu would sell.

Back in 2005, “people were kind of into the chains,” she added. Restaurateurs in Denver were hopeful the event would bring in new customers.

Over the years, Gruitch said there has been a water-cooler effect with people talking about their experiences during Denver Restaurant Week. Each year, the event has grown, she said. Restaurant owners said they have seen repeat customers come in after the event.

“Word of mouth is so important, and we wanted to get people talking about dining out,” Scharf said. “If your locals do not believe your brand, visitors will not either.”

Jacqualine Bonanno from Bonanno Concepts said their flagship restauran Mizuna was the first restaurant to sign up for Denver Res-

taurant Week 15 years ago. She said that while restaurant week customers may not be the best target audience to convert into repeat diners, they do spread the word. Bonanno restaurants like Mizuna, a French restaurant, now use the strategy of bringing well-loved and simple foods to the table during restaurant week.

“We aim for the simplest of our fares—food that everyone loves—and we try to do it in abundance for a true value. Heaping bowls of fresh pasta, a grilled ribeye with garlic butter, fresh halibut,” Bonanno said. “Our experience is that the service needs to be brisk, and the food can’t be too fancy or complicated. If there’s a dish that needs to be explained, it’s the wrong dish for Restaurant Week.”

Miranda McFarlan, general manager at Tamayo, a Mexican restaurant on Larimer Street, said she has some customers that specifically come every year for Denver Restaurant Week. Other customers became regulars after visiting for the first time during the event.

At first, Denver Restaurant Week used the $52.80 model, which let diners have multiple courses from the participating location of their choice. Over the years, Visit Denver also added a summer event. More recently, the event has changed to the scaling price point. McFarlen said this model works well for restaurants.

It also allows more restaurants to participate in the event, said Josh Wolkon, owner of Secret Sauce Food and Beverage, which includes the Vesta, Ace Eat Serve, Stuebens restaurants.

Although $52.80 for a meal was a fun marketing concept, some of the more casual restaurants such as Ace Eat Serve and Stuebens didn’t have the menu options at that cost, Wolkon said. At the $35 level, Steubens is able to participate by offering a three-course

Restaurant week helped to change the landscape in Denver’s restaurant scene, Wolkon said. Dessert is a hard sell for customers on a typical night, with only 25 to 30 percent of people buying it, Wolkon said. But during restaurant week it usually comes with the meal.

His pastry chefs churn out a lot more product during restaurant week, he said, adding “It’s important, because that’s their last bite.”

The event also generates customers during a traditionally low period of the year. Wolkon’s restaurant Vesta, which offers a seasonally based menu with fresh ingredients, is usually sold out during restaurant week.

“It’s just a great way to boost energy for staff and the room,” he said.

McFarlen added that restaurant week is fun for people working in the industry as well.

Every year, she is excited to see what special menu items the chefs at Tamayo come up with for the event.

It’s also a reminder of how many places there are to eat around the city, she said. “It’s a fun way to get out and remind yourself of all the restaurants that have been around.”

I am running for re-election to build on the many successes we have achieved over the last 3 1/2 years — safer and more walkable streets, more parkland and better maintained parks, protecting our seniors and easier transit connections. Having worked and volunteered in southeast Denver for over 25 years, I am proud of the achievements with which I’ve been involved. It’s clear we have come a long way, but we still have much to accomplish.

I’ve lived in Council District 4 most of my life. My husband and I grew up here, raised and educated our kids here, and we plan to retire here.

My history of public service to southeast Denver goes back 20 years before I was elected — volunteering at my kids’ schools, advocating on behalf of our parks, and heading up various other community projects. I am the only candidate in this race with a proven, decadeslong history of getting things done for southeast Denver.

I am running for city council because the people deserve representation that stands up for them and serves them. I’ve lived in Denver nearly my entire life and in the past four years the city has become unaffordable, unjust and unsafe. While government can’t control or fix everything, we can and must do better. We need leaders who aren’t afraid to make hard decisions and who are focused on the needs of community, not developers.

I am a regular person. I’m not a political insider or a specialinterest darling. I am grassroots, for the people. I am a real estate broker by trade; I understand the nuance of needing growth but respecting community. I’m a person who saw the city she grew up in becoming unrecognizable and decided to stand up. I’m a mom who wants her daughter to grow up in a city that she is proud of.

I am running to bring government back to the people. We need to create an economy that allows hard-working people to live well and enjoy life. We must improve our infrastructure and expand our transit services. We need to promote carefully thought out and diverse development. We need to be welcoming to new residents, while making sure those who call Denver and District 5 home can stay in their homes and continue to live the life they have worked hard to achieve.

I have the experience to bring real solutions to city council. Working at the Capitol for the past several years as chief of staff and policy analyst for a state representative, coupled with my community organizing, I know the importance of working with other municipalities and the state government. I have built the relationships necessary to hit the ground running from day one. I promise to represent the interests of the taxpayers and residents of Denver, not the interests of profit-driven developers and large corporations. We deserve better.

I am eager to put the city on a more sensible path as it grows. Decisions are being made in our district without the full input of our residents, and the development decisions could well cause a significant increase in traffic and prices. I want to bring COMMON SENSE back to Denver.

As an attorney, a CPA and a “fast track” business coach, I believe that I have the most relevant experience with issues faced daily by the city by representing small and growing businesses, and yes, even a number of developers, my entire career. My experience includes literally thousands of negotiations. In the political process (as in life itself), knowing how to reach a consensus is indispensable skill in arriving at ideal solutions for all.

I’m running for Denver City Council because the current council has been short-sighted. They have stopped being responsive to the concerns of the people who live in Denver. It’s time for a change. I will bring a long-term, strategic approach to our city planning. We need to be thoughtful about the way Denver develops moving forward. I will make ensure that the people who live in our neighborhoods have a voice and a seat at the table in these conversations.

I am the best choice for this office because I am just like the people I seek to represent. I face the same challenges we all face living in this city, like traffic congestion, concerns about crime and safety, and frustration with the direction Denver is headed. I have three kids in Denver Public Schools. I shop the local stores and spend weekends on the sideline of our local soccer fields. I’ve been doing this for eight years and the opportunity to engage with my fellow residents in the stewardship of our city is a gift. What will be your top priority if you are elected to this office?

Listening, engaging and executing. The very best councilmembers who represent districts — as opposed to representing the city at-large — try to distill the collective vision of their constituents, formulate plans, find the funding and put those plans into action.

Representing the values, priorities and creative ideas of District 4 constituents is not just immensely gratifying, it’s really the essence of the job. Additionally, councilmembers must work together and with city staff to address the many issues facing our city and its residents.

I will continue to address the many issues related to Denver’s unprecedented growth: housing and homelessness, traffic and mobility, environmental issues like pressure on parks, air quality and solid waste, planning and loss of neighborhood character. I am leading on some of these important issues and collaborating on others. I have engaged thousands of my constituents through dozens of community meetings to learn their concerns and priorities, some of which include a park in the U-Hills neighborhood, improved pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, area planning and improved land use.

My priority is to serve my constituents and expand upon the civic engagement efforts we’ve undertaken through the District 4 council office. Together we will continue to work to preserve and enhance our neighborhoods and parks, improve land use, and to increase safety and mobility options. I will continue to engage my constituents, listen and respond quickly to their comments, questions and great ideas. Making good on those responses requires a sustained effort to ensure we get our fair share of city amenities, investments, repairs and infrastructure improvements.

Standing up for your community and constituents is the most important duty. Making sure you are pushing back on bad policy, even if it makes you unpopular with others in city hall. Centering policy around the marginalized to ensure that a rising tide lifts all boats. Working hard on difficult topics for the entirety of your term, not just going after low-hanging fruit and rolling out grand policy six months prior to an election.

We need to ensure our people and communities are at the forefront of all decisions. For too long, the only interests that have been taken into account are those of developers and high-monied special interests. On city council, I will always put community first, which includes making sure new growth is environmentally and economically sustainable.

My top priority will be housing affordability and how to make that a reality. Additionally, multi-modal transit (buses, trackless trams, trolley cars, protected bike lanes) and neighborhood safety round out my top three issues I will be focused on.

To represent the people who elected them to office. To work collaboratively with all stakeholders, not just the few who contribute to campaigns and know how to leverage their position with the elected members of council. City council is responsible for many things that directly impact quality of life for every person who works and lives in Denver. City council salaries are paid by the taxpayers who elect us to represent their interests first.

Ensuring our current green areas remain intact, more, not less parks, and keeping our tree canopy healthy. We need to have better mobility, which means increased and better public transit that is affordable. People are spending more and more time in their cars which adds exponentially to the smog and pollution. As the population continues to grow, we need to look to the companies moving to Denver to bring a housing and transit plan with them to ease the strain on the current infrastructure.

Property tax relief to homeowners. Find a reasonable curb the rising rents throughout Denver. Rent control is not an option until the Legislature fixes Colorado revised statutes specific to Telluride. Currently rent control in Colorado is illegal. Equal pay for equal work — a livable wage, paid family and medical leave for workers throughout the City and County of Denver.

The most important duties of a member of council are to listen to those who elected you and to represent their thoughts, problems, solutions and input into the city processes. Secondly, council members are directly responsible for the direction of the city, with the mayor, and it is their wisdom and experience that will make the difference between a congested and unlivable city or a wonderful place for our residents and visitors.

We need to stop granting all new building permits (but for existing zoning and its uses), for 24 months in order to assess the impact of the units under construction now. Once development starts, it is impossible to reverse its course.

Once buildings are completed, there is no opportunity to fix mistakes for the neighborhoods. We need to revise our new building permit application process significantly to include traffic studies and overall neighborhood impact.

My top priority will be to research the best ways to deal with the dangerous and growing impact of our traffic congestion.

The inability to get anywhere easily and efficiently is impacting our entire city in very negative ways. We are not yet a mass-transit-oriented city like New York, and until we have the necessary infrastructure, the solution to this problem needs to occur now before we slowly sink into city-wide gridlock.

The single most important duty of a city councilperson is to represent the people who live in our neighborhoods.

We need to find workable solutions to our housing crisis so that we stop driving out the hard-working families who live in Denver. We need to find solutions to our homeless crisis.

We need to make sure that we have enough parks and open space for our population. We need to get people out of their cars by providing mobility and transit infrastructure for the people who live in our neighborhoods.

When elected, my top priority will be to establish a dedicated source of funding for transit and mobility infrastructure. For numerous reasons, we need to provide solutions for Denverites to get out of their cars when it’s possible. But without the necessary funding, that will be impossible. I look forward to the opportunity to providing realistic mobility solutions that work for the people who live here.

City Council is the legislative body of city government. Making laws is our function. Our major responsibility is land use. I have been the Land Use Committee chair for five years now, and the competing and complimentary needs of each councilmember’s constituents, debated and compromised, is one of the best things to experience.

Our ability to get things done for a constituent require developing good relationships with city agencies and employees so they trust your respect for their time, resources, and expertise.

In addition to taking care that the physical environment is healthy and safe, that personal opportunities for healthy lifestyles, safety and economic security are present, the best ingredient is the participation of as many residents as possible in making decisions about quality of life. It means different things to different people, and the greater the variety of perspective and expertise you can draw on the better the outcome.

My top priority has been transportation and mobility. I’ve been successful in getting the city to create a Transportation and Mobility Department, coming soon, that focuses on our ability to move on top of (or under or above) our infrastructure. Denver needs to own our mobility needs that include better, more convenient and inexpensive transit, and is prepared for the innovations in mobility coming.

What are the most important duties for a member of council?

The primary job of any government is to keep its people safe. As a council representative that responsibility is carried out through two channels. The first is to craft laws that further public health and safety, whether regarding public behavior, traffic control, zoning, environmental policy, etc. The second involves connecting individual residents to their government through day-to-day contact to be sure that the laws we craft are being applied and enforced.

What should be done to ensure a high quality of life for residents as Denver’s population continues to grow?

Development in Denver has been booming for much of the past decade, but its benefits have not reached all residents or all neighborhoods. We must create an inventory of affordable housing. Our homeless must have shelter and services needed to restore them to a productive lifestyle. Seniors must have affordable options for housing should they choose to downsize later in life. Young families must have the choice to raise their families in the neighborhoods where they themselves were raised.

What will be your top priority if you are elected to this office?

I will work to craft policies that shift the emphasis of development in Denver to serve our civic values first and private profit second — meaning construction of quality attainable housing for all income levels, creation of more green space where community can flourish and ensuring that as we grow, we do so in a manner that takes into account the effect of that development on our planet.

It has been an amazing honor to represent District 7 for the past four years, and I am running to keep fighting hard for my community on the city council. Working with the neighborhoods in District 7, we were able to get funding for so many infrastructure projects that the community has been asking for and get so many great things started, but there is so much more to do.

I love this community, I spent my entire adult life working with and for this community, first along the South Platte with The Greenway Foundation, and over the past four years on the city council. My heart and my passion is working for and fighting for this community. With four years under my belt I am even better equipped tackle the issues that matter to my constituents.

The initiatives cover drug legalization, and homeless camping. Below are brief explanations of each.

Denver Right to Survive Initiative This initiative would give people the right to rest or take shelter in public spaces. It also would allow people to give or share food as long as the location they are in allows food. Right to survive would allow people to stay in legally parked cars.

The initiative allows people to rest, as long as they are doing so in a way that does not obstruct paths, or is creating a hazard. It would be unlawful for city employees, police, or security guards

What makes you the best choice for this office?

I’ve been an advocate at the local and state levels for years now. My neighbors kept asking me to speak on their behalf because they felt like they didn’t have a champion at City Hall who was representing their interests. I’ve served on Blueprint, multiple RNOs (Registered Neighborhood Organizations) including CHUN (Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods), successfully lobbied the state Legislature, and even have a law named after me. We need qualified representation, and I’m ready to fight for District 10.

I’m running for city council because I want to represent our entire district, not just one subsection. Denver is growing fast and we need leadership to address some of the challenges we are facing as a result of that growth — lack of affordable housing, a growing homeless population, increased pollution, and poor infrastructure. I believe our leadership needs to be focused on building the Denver of tomorrow, not preserving the Denver of yesterday.

I’ve spent my entire career as a public servant — from serving a class of third-graders in Newark, New Jersey to teaching a class of Andorran high schoolers English as a Fulbright Fellow to serving as deputy chief of staff for two Colorado lieutenant governors. My varied experiences in public service gives me the tools necessary to lead on day one. My unique background has prepared me to take on the challenges of effective city governance.

Grateful for current successes, I want to do more. My whole life is a blend of public service and business management, making me the most qualified. My first term gives me hands-on knowledge and enables me to get more things done. District 10 is beautiful and diverse with art, history, unique neighborhoods, parks, character, and vibrancy. I love representing the “heart of Denver” and I want to continue serving, protecting and enhancing our quality of life.

Before my election, I earned 30-plus years’ experience with children’s hospital management. The city, like hospitals, has almost 70 percent labor costs, operates 24/7, and meets daily citizen needs dealing with quality-of-life issues. Through education and experience, I have great insight into financial operations and extensive operational improvement experience. I am an inclusive facilitator, able to bring community leaders and city officials together, creating the most effective, quality solutions for our neighborhoods and businesses.

I am seeking this office because I strongly believe that Denverites are missing a connection to local government — I will represent District 10’s diversity, because we all need to feel represented and have a connection to local government. I want to be a proactive strong voice for their concerns, focusing on listening to District 10’s residents’ concerns and learning from them.

When I look at City Council, I see a group of individuals rather than a team. As shown by my time at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival and on various city commissions, and boards of directors, I am a proven collaborator and coalition builder, and I can help build coalitions on city council and with the myriad of city agencies and departments on crucial issues facing the city. We need people on council that can relate to all people, be proactive, relatable and passionately serve our citizens.

Psilocybin Initiative This initiative would decriminalize the possession and use of psilocybin mushrooms, or psychedelic mushrooms, for people aged 21 and older.

Under this ordinance, the city would no longer use resources to impose penalties on people legally using mushrooms under the ordinance. In addition, the city would create a policy review panel with 11 members

by Dec. 31, 2019. The panel would include city council members and residents, as well as an officer from the Denver Police Department and an addiction counselor.

The panel would send reports to regular reports and recommendations on how the policy is working.

We need to get every neighborhood a neighborhood plan so that they have a real voice in how growth happens and what it looks like. We need to make sure that every citizen has a park within a safe 10 minute walk and that all of our parks have high quality amenities. We need a complete network for transit, bikes, and pedestrians so that people have real options about how they get around the city.

What should be done to ensure a high quality of life for residents as Denver’s population continues to grow?

What will be your top priority if you are elected to this office?

Continue to be accessible and responsive to the citizens that I represent while being a strong voice for them on the city council.

What will be your top priority if you are elected to this office?

A representative’s most important duty is to represent. That means having a fully staffed office that can field and respond to calls, and it also means a representative that actively visits every neighborhood in the district at times when constituents are available. People consistently tell me that I’m “everywhere.” While that’s factually impossible, many tell me they have no challenge finding me to share concerns. (Also, I honestly have no twin brothers or body doubles!)

We need viable car alternatives. Fix our busted and broken sidewalks. Install protected bike lanes. Improve mass transit. We all deserve the freedom to get from A to B and feel safe while getting there. Let’s make sure everything needed to thrive is available in each neighborhood within a 20-minute walk or roll. It helps the planet and our physical health. It helps community, too, because we see our neighbors more and develop stronger bonds.

We must restore trust in residents that all of District 10 is represented. I’ve already spoken with thousands in District 10, and we will formalize the many ways everyone in 10 can share input. We will once again have a champion for the district, someone who’s ready and willing to fight for the needs of 10. Let’s preserve what makes us special while also welcoming newcomers to our wonderful city. I hope you’ll join us!

The most important duty of a city council member, at this moment, is to represent their community. Our current city council members are criticized heavily by residents who feel they are beholden to private interests and no longer have the interest of the people at heart. This next city council has to re-instill faith in leadership and government before they can work on the city budget or new community plans.

City council needs to address Denver’s environmental concern including water, air, and natural lands. We’ve seen the rise in ozone-related air quality issues affect our citizens negatively and an increase in heart and lung problems. With all the growth in Denver (over 100,000 people in the last seven years) water demand will soon exceed supply. Conservation is in our city’s DNA so we need to make sure to prioritize from a policy and legislative perspective.

Addressing our city’s affordable housing problem. Many know that wages have not kept pace with inflation and the growth in our city, the shortage of housing supply, especially condos, in our housing market, and other factors have led to a housing crisis in our city. City council’s efforts have barely made an impact and more concentrated efforts and innovation are needed to truly address this issue.

Being accessible and communicating regularly with all constituents. I achieve this through constant, responsive office assistance; weekly in-the-community office hours; informative newsletters and emails; and resident surveys on key city issues. Having a thorough understanding of the zoning code and processes is indispensable. Lastly, having a broad perspective on both current and future citywide needs, in order to build cooperation among city council and the mayor to promote and maintain smart strategies for the future.

We need strategic, synergistic planning that identifies implementation and funding. Our three most pressing issues, affordable housing, homelessness, and transportation, should have integrated solutions. Smarter solutions solve more than one issue simultaneously, costing less. Reducing neighborhood traffic as well as crime enhances public safety. Preserving the quality of parks contributes to health and well-being. A city is its people. Elected officials and all city employees must remember: We serve the people first!

I run my office on what I call the five E’s: Education to build understanding; Effectiveness to eliminate waste and respond quickly to constituents; Efficiency to spend your tax dollars delivering value and the quality of life you deserve; Enforcement of existing regulations; and Enhancement of the environment to protect and maintain the beauty and quality of our neighborhoods, parks, open space, and natural resources. I love Denver.

The most important duty is to listen, respond and represent the views of their district. I will work tirelessly to make sure District 10 is fairly and fully represented on council. Furthermore, we need city council to more effectively manage the growth of the city.

We need to expand affordable and low-income housing options in the city, provide increased services for our growing homeless population, proactively work to preserve the character of our neighborhoods, provide access to a more robust transportation network and educate residents on the incredible city resources available for health and wellness.

My top priority will certainly be to expand affordable and lowincome housing in Denver. Too many residents are struggling to find places to live, and we must focus on equitable solutions for all.

I am running for mayor because I love my city and because I believe Denver can be a city that is more fair, more just, and more equitable for all of its residents. I believe that by working together, we can build a city based on shared power and accountability — one where residents and workers are included in the policy decisions that most affect them.

I have spent 30 years in the service of others as an organizer, educator, nonprofit director and community leader. I have the heart, the skills and the policy know-how to lead this city in a new direction, one that places people first and prioritizes the needs of women, workers and residents in Denver over the interests of an elite group of political and corporate power brokers. Working together, we will build a city that provides more opportunities for more people and where we all will thrive.

I decided to run for mayor after extensive work with neighborhoods across Denver who were struggling with our vast growth and seeing its consequences to their quality of life and opportunity here. Growth that has benefited a few and delivered extraordinary challenges for many. Denver is growing, but we can do it in a thoughtful way. To grow thoughtfully, we must grow smart. I understand how cities work and the complex problems they face. I have worked in almost every quadrant of this city and with every city agency.

I have been a champion for building coalitions of community members who can work with local government to improve cities. I’ve helped address challenges large and small by bringing together diverse (and sometimes disparate voices) to find common ground. Common sense and creative thinking are a hallmark of my work. In my time in Denver, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a diversity of issues – from affordable housing, to zoning and design, environmental issues, safe streets, homelessness, and the arts.

I grew up in Denver. My family moved from Park Hill, to Montbello, to Whittier and then to Five Points when we finally secured public housing. From the age of 12, I wanted to be mayor because I saw how a city could help kids just like me. We have big important issues to tackle.

I’m working on these issues because I have something to give back to a city that gave me so much.

I have the plans, experience and teams of experts to achieve Denver’s affordability, mobility, sustainability and equity goals. No other candidate in this race has my track record, budget plan or understanding of the ways in which the city and community work together successfully.

I love our home, and I’m proud of everything we’ve accomplished in eight years. I’m truly excited about the opportunities we have to deliver a more equitable, welcoming, and progressive city.

Denver is in need of a mayor that will lead Denver’s future. For the last eight years, we’ve had an administration that puts the needs of the wealthy few ahead of the rest of us. What makes you the best choice for this office?

I started registering voters and ensuring everyone has access to the ballot at the age of 13, and I’ve never really stopped. I have a passion for civic participation and ensuring every voice in our community is heard. I’ve dedicated my entire career to serving the city I love and I believe that I can build on the outstanding work the clerk and recorder’s office has been doing while bringing in some new ideas and a fresh approach.

I have experience to hit the ground running on day one. I am a threeterm city councilman who has spent 12 years serving the people of Denver and fighting for people and neighborhoods. I have more than two decades of experience forming partnerships in communities across Denver. I am proud to say that I’m born and raised in the city that I serve. I grew up poor, working to pay my own way through college, and spent my life organizing for equal access to the ballot in Denver neighborhoods.

I am not seeking this office as a platform to run for future elective office, but as an opportunity to put three decades of experience in community, government and nonprofit organization administration to work for the residents of Denver. I also bring decades of experience in dealing with voting and electoral process issues (fair elections, voter information, access for special populations, voting methods and technology, including security issues) as a member and officer of the Denver League of Women Voters.

I am a professional public administrator who has worked for the City of Denver and the State of Colorado. I have managed complex government budgets, construction budgets, and nonprofit budgets. I have designed and successfully implemented government processes. My experience in construction management and rehabilitation of historic properties, including low-income housing, has made me familiar with the real estate document recording aspects of the office and with Denver neighborhoods.

I am running for Denver clerk because I’ve spent my legal career working to make government more open and accountable to all people, not just the wealthy and well-connected. For 15 years my focus has fighting for people in the core areas of the Denver clerk’s responsibilities: voting rights, campaign finance, public records access, and government ethics. For years, I’ve also helped people frustrated by trying to access public information or records being stopped by fees and other hurdles to finding what they need.

I am passionate about connecting people with their government to increase community participation in governing, and have a track record of bipartisan success in passing and implementing reforms and increasing government accountability and transparency. At the local level, I have collaborated with the current Denver clerk and City Council to improve transparency of city lobbyist reporting, update the code of ethics, and modernize Denver’s campaign rules to reduce the amount of “dark money” in city elections.

What will be your top priority if you are elected to this office?

The most important duty for a mayor is to provide for the prosperity of all residents in Denver in an equitable, fair and just manner.

The mayor should promote policies that support the health, safety, well-being and revitalization of all neighborhoods regardless of status, income and zip code. As the city’s top executive, the mayor should provide the example for the 11,000 city workers, maintain a system of checks and balances to guard against government abuses, and ensure the fiscal and moral integrity of the city.

Denver’s growth and prosperity works for some, but not for enough of us; our working people and families are being left behind. I will invest the resources we need to make development more residentand community-driven, with particular attention to sustainability, affordable and attainable housing, and truly multimodal transportation throughout our neighborhoods.

The pillars of my campaign are equity, fairness, and justice. A top priority for me is equity for workers and being able to afford to live in the city. I support a livable wage for supporting the basic needs of working families, with a commitment to regular increases to keep pace with the cost of living in Denver. I will implement policies that achieve fairness through accountability, checks and balances, and transparency. We should not have one set of rules for the mayor and another for city workers.

There are three important duties for a mayor: 1. To serve all the people of Denver and ensure my administration is ethical, accountable and transparent. The mayor sets the tone for the rest of the city. 2. To be both a visionary and a manager. The mayor sets the city’s budget and hires every major department head. 3. To be willing to take bold steps to protect EVERYBODY’s quality of life. We must be willing to acknowledge communities that have been left behind, and meet neighbors where they are.

My campaign is focused on five core areas: 1. Managed growth, development, density and design: Good cities understand that planning means allowing growth to happen strategically. 2. Building an intra-city transit network. 3. Get attainable housing built: My focus will be on lifting cost burdens to attainable development, fast-tracking permitting times and reducing fees for affordable developers. 4. Protect our parks and green space, and improve our environment. 5.

Thoughtful solutions for homelessness.

When elected, I will immediately address the way Denver approaches growth and development. I will look at zoning and design and how the Denveright plan, if passed by City Council on April 16, will be implemented. I will also immediately begin the process of implementing a Department of Transportation and identifying how we will get transit built.

Finally, action on homelessness must be priority action. If Initiative 300 passes, I believe it will become an even more pressing matter for us to manage thoughtfully.

It has been my greatest honor to serve the people of Denver, and I will always cherish the trust and responsibility placed in me. I believe a mayor is responsible for protecting the health, safety and welfare of all people – maintaining critical functions of city government and the infrastructure of our city; improving what makes Denver a great place to live with good jobs, beautiful parks and vibrant neighborhoods; and ensuring economic opportunities for all.

I’ve spent my entire life in Denver, and like you, I’ve watched our city grow. We’ve become a vibrant city, a leader in progressive values with a modern economy. But we must continue to strongly manage the growth so that it reflects all that we love about our home.

We have specific plans – created side-by-side with thousands of Denverites – to better preserve our unique neighborhoods, creating a more inclusive, connected and healthy city for everyone.

I’m excited to continue our progress to create more equity and accessibility and to deliver a more welcoming, modern and progressive city for everyone. This requires enhancing programs that’ll protect our people and neighborhoods and increase access to opportunity. We’re focused on increasing affordable housing; improving services for those experiencing homelessness; offering more mobility options and addressing traffic congestion; delivering on the Elevate Denver Bond Program; fighting climate change; and ensuring that Denver remains safe.

The mayor needs to lead and to listen. It isn’t enough to have great ideas. As mayor, I will bring community, policy experts, and stakeholders together to craft a plan to lead Denver’s future. I will recruit and retain the top people in their fields to address the crisis we are facing in Denver and I will have the political will to stand up to wealthy interests to fight for everyday working people.

Over 80,000 people are moving to Denver each year. I believe the city has a responsibility to make sure that we grow in a fair and equitable way that is compatible with our vibrant and diverse neighborhoods. Growth has to be designed, planned, and managed in a way that works for and with us and not just done to us.

Development must include a range of attainable housing options as well as green space in our city.

Our city has too many dire needs to have a singular priority.

However, my administration will be particularly focused on helping the homeless off the street in my first 100 days, as well as sitting down with developers to set new rules and standards for development of affordable housing.

As Denver clerk and recorder, I believe that the ability to put together an effective team of leaders and having an ambitious vision for the office are necessary to build on the amazing work that the office has been doing. Having served in the City Council for almost 12 years, I also know how to interact with the mayor’s office and council to fight for the priorities of the clerk’s office and secure the funding necessary to act on those priorities.

The Denver clerk and recorder not only needs to manage multiple departments and ensure they’re running smoothly, but continually improve the work that is being done and enact a vision for the office. The clerk needs to be active in the community and expanding voting access and participation. They need to be arming residents with information to prevent unnecessary foreclosures. The clerk also needs to protect the integrity of the voting process in the next elections.

Expanding access to the ballot, implementing campaign finance reform, preventing foreclosures, and improving access to city records are among my top priorities. I want to fundamentally reimagine and expand the way the clerk and recorder’s office and election division interact with our communities and ensure that Denver remains the best place to vote in the country especially. I also want to make sure that city contracts and the business that the city does more transparent and accessible to the public.

To be effective, the clerk needs to know how to manage complex public budgets. I have done that. The position also requires someone who knows how to upgrade technology, and to design and implement new systems and processes. I have done that. It also requires someone who knows that Denver is a city of neighborhoods and who understands neighborhood differences. I have lived and worked through these differences: professionally, as a volunteer and community activist, a preservationist, a DPS parent, and as a neighbor.

An effective clerk is expected to lead an office that provides efficient and timely services and to oversee a secure and problem-free elections process. However, to be most effective, a clerk must make ongoing efforts to analyze performance data and map it to determine who the office is serving and to see, as well, who the office may not be serving and why.

Are there problems serving special language populations or differently-abled populations, for example.

My top priority, in addition to continuing to provide highquality service for all functions of the office, will be to address the implementation of the voter-approved Fair Elections Fund. It is critically important that this matching funds process be established from the outset with an identity of transparency, effective communication, and integrity.

The clerk should have experience in the technical areas that the office oversees, such as elections and public records, and be committed to making services and information accessible to all residents without regard to political considerations. The clerk is an important representative of the city working with the secretary of state, legislative leaders, and the other county clerks across Colorado in elections, public records, and land recording or public trustee issues and must have relationships and the ability to lead if necessary on measures at a statewide level.

The clerk’s ultimate mission is to connect residents to the city government, not only through direct service offerings like land recordings and marriage licenses, but by supporting public participation in governing on Election Day and every other day when policy is made in our city. My vision for the clerk’s office is one that breaks down remaining barriers to voting for some communities and ensures equal access to public information regarding city decisions. An effective clerk is one who instills confidence in city government.

An overarching main priority will be to improve accountability and transparency in city government by integrating the information and accessibility of all divisions of the clerk’s office. This effort will also involve gathering community input on improving the transparency of public records access and searchability of information in the clerk’s office and I will post a full inventory or directory of all public records available, because there are a number of city records that are not advertised as such.

Hickenlooper enters presidential race

DU brings in new shuttle service Staff Report After losing one shuttle service for students at the University of Denver, a new one has come in to take its place.

The new service, Jay’s Valet, started on March 1. Previously, the service was run by Chariot, a Ford-owned micro-transit company that shut down. Chariot services ended on Feb. 28.

Jay’s Valet will follow the same routes and make the same stops as the Chariot service, according to the DU website. It will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and shuttles will arrive at stops every 20 minutes. Unlike the Chariot services, there is not an app for boarding or shuttle status with Jay’s Valet. Students must show the driver a valid DU Pioneer ID in order to use the shuttle, the website said.

Her mission: to find the good George Mayl, president of the INC, said the organization is looking into dedicating a memorial bench to Helper, possibly one along Buchtel Boulevard.

Diana was naturally curious, and every morning as she read the paper, she would dig in to learn more about new developments that might impact her community, said her son Steve.

“Every day she would want to know. She would investigate,” he said. “She would be kind of a sleuth in some respects.”

It was never something she would have been interested in being paid for, he added. She was content to be on the sidelines of organizations instead of leading as president. Diana’s work with the city was something she did “lovingly, and willingly and determinedly,” Steve said. Aside from attending meetings, Steve added that it was Diana’s connection to people that made her a strong person, one who also sought to find the good in all things.

“She always looked for the good in everything, no matter what,” he said. “It was always trying to make things better and find the good.

That was her mission.”

Although John frequently took Diana to meetings around the city, he didn’t participate in that side of

Their shared love of music was one of the first things the city girl from the Chicago area and the farmer from rural Illinois learned about each other when they met in January 1954. Their first date was to a senior dance at the University of Illinois.

“What I cherish about her was not only the music, but the feeling that went with it,” John said of their marriage.

Their birthdays were a day apart.

John supported Diana’s quest to better the city of Denver, just

as she had spent years supporting him through a master’s degree and later a doctorate program at the University of Denver. Their “rock-solid” partnership was the glue that held them together, said Steve. He added that their mutual love of wit and humor brought joy to the family.

“There was a lot of wit and a lot of word play,” Steve said. “I think it’s a quality that certainly has been a part of their very successful marriage.”

A love of words For more than 30 years, Helper has been a contributing writer to

the Profile, writing the monthly column “Helper Here and Now.” Her columns also have run more recently in Life on Capitol Hill.

“I don’t remember a time before Diana Helper,” said Councilmember Paul Kashmann, who began working at the Profile shortly after it was founded in 1978. He took over as owner in 1983, the same year Helper began to write monthly columns for the paper.

Her column, then called “University Park News and Views,” helped raise the profile of the neighborhood, Kashmann said.

In the past several months, Helper’s columns began to focus

more on sustainability. Going green was her new passion project, and she participated in sustainability groups in the INC and UPCC. She also helped with community outreach on the topic at the United Methodist Church in University Park.

After Kashmann left the Profile and was elected to Denver City Council in 2015, he continued working with Helper, who he called a “tireless advocate” for city parks. Although she was passionate in fighting for what she believed in, Kashmann said Helper also was a great listener, even in her last weeks.

“She was as bright and on-point and energized as she ever has been,” he said. “She was a gentle person.”

“She was a steadfast, unique voice for her community. She had a love for words and puns and poetry and song. She was an integral part of a great project,” he added about Diana’s work at the Washington Park Profile.

A love of words was something Diana shared with her family.

John and Steve began helping Diana go through her poetry collection while she was in hospice.

It was something that helped the family focus on something other than her illness.

“You hear the phrase ‘unconditional love.’ That has substance to me now, it’s more than just the words,” John said. “I think it captures a lot of what we’ve experienced.”

School selection sees record participation Students from DPS receive fashion makeovers for prom Staff Report DPS sees record participation in SchoolChoice Last month the district estimated that staff sent out more than 27,000 emails and text to families letting them know which schools their students made it into after the first round of SchoolChoice ended.

SchoolChoice selection at Denver Public Schools closed on Feb. 20. SchoolChoice allows families to select their top schools from anywhere in the district. The goal of SchoolChoice is to level the playing field by giving all DPS students access to a quality education, regardless of their address or socio-economic background, said a release from the district.

This year, DPS shifted the first round of SchoolChoice earlier by one month in order to give out results to parents sooner. The district also opened a walk-in enrollment center this year.

Round two of SchoolChoice will open on April 3, and will allow new families to participate, as well as families that did not participate in round one. Families who have already received their top three matches from the first round of SchoolChoice can re-explore their options during the second round, the release said.

TLC television show helps students with prom clothes On March 19, nearly 250 students from DPS schools received prom make overs from the TLC television show “Say Yes to the Prom.” The network selected five cities this year for the opportunity, including Denver.

The show aims to help deserving students with outfits and makeovers for the prom, said a release from the district. The event also works to go beyond the dress and tuxedo to build selfconfidence and prepare students for college and careers by featuring scholarship, internship and mentorship opportunities.

The Cable Center at the University of Denver, 2000 Buchtel Blvd. South was filled with selections of tuxedos and dresses for students on March 19.

DPS releases Superintendent Entry Plan DPS Superintendent Susana Cordova released her entry plan at the end of February, shortly after the teachers’ strike ended. The plan outlines her goals and next steps as the head of Denver’s school district.

“In this entry plan as superintendent, my goal is to create a foundation upon which we can build a stronger future — for our community, for our DPS team members and, most importantly, for our students,” Cordova wrote in the plan. “My vision is that every single one of our students thrives — not by accident, but by design.”

DU researchers look into economics of paid family leave Staff Report Colorado workers would receive an average of $671 in weekly benefits if the bill for paid family leave passes, according to research from the University of Denver and Colorado Women’s College. The research was done by the Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) at DU, according to a news release. The university’s Department of Economics also contributed to the report.

Senate Bill 19-188 would allow for 12 weeks of paid family leave to care for a sick family member, tend to a personal medical issue or take care of a new child. If passed,

Colorado would be the seventh state to provide these benefits, the release said.

The bill passed the Senate Business, Labor and Technology Committee on a 3-2 vote March 13 and moves to the Finance Committee before eventual consideration by the full Senate.

Jennifer Greenfield, the lead author of the study and assistant professor at GSSW, said in the release that not having a program to address paid family leave has become a problem for Colorado. She added that Colorado is one of the states most impacted by the Baby Boomer generation.

“Paid leave is important for parents of newborns, but also for other caregivers,” Greenfield said. “The population of people

aged 65 and above is expected to increase by 61 percent by 2030, and more than onethird of those adults will need some form of long-term care. We must find a way to help Colorado workers who also serve as a caregiver for a child or aging family member.”

Research shows that nearly one-third of employees have left jobs because of caregiving responsibilities, the release stated.

The average time to replace a worker is 42 days, and businesses will often spend one-fifth of an employee’s annual salary in the search.

Greenfield’s research looked into providing a sustainable model for paid family leave. The model is based on the

Family and Medical Leave Insurance Act, which was first introduced to Colorado lawmakers in 2015. The program would be fully funded by workers and employers contributing a maximum of 0.678 percent of payroll, the release said.

The study estimated that 131,000 people, or 5 percent of eligible workers in Colorado, would access benefits each year for an average leave duration of nine weeks.

The average benefits those workers would receive each week is $671. The benefit amount was based off employee payroll, with the maximum benefit amount at $1,000 per week.

To-do lists are a fairly common feature of daily life in the 21st century, but it turns out this organizational method has been around for centuries — just ask Italian Renaissance man Leonardo da Vinci.

While most of us have things like “do the shopping” or “clean the kitchen,” items on da Vinci’s list involved things like finding a way to measure the size of the sun and study the tongue of a woodpecker.

Insights like these are among things visitors to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s “Leonardo da Vinci: 500 Years of Genius” exhibit can learn about one of humanity’s most adventurous thinkers.

“On one list, da Vinci had written that he should try to buy some corn, which had just been brought from the new world,” said Stephen Nash, curator of archaeology at the museum. “The audacity of these lists is just incredible. It gives you a look into the mind of the man.”

Today, da Vinci is recognized as an innovator in the fields of art, science, engineering and other disciplines. But examples of his work were mostly scattered or destroyed following his death. The few surviving artifacts are in private collections or permanently housed in museums.

According to information provided by the museum, exhibit creators Grande Exhibitions worked with the Museo Leonardo da Vinci in Rome and experts from Italy

and France to build replicas of da Vinci’s inventions and paintings. They also created replicas of his books, notes and sketches, gathered in codices, or manuscripts from that time.

“What creates a person that is so far advanced, perhaps more so than anybody else in history?” asked George Sparks, president and CEO of the DMNS. “Our staff spent a lot of time working to make this exhibit our own at the museum as we thought about these questions.”

Using the man’s notes from his codices, creators were able to build reproductions of about 70 of da Vinci’s inventions, including crude attempts at machines like a helicopter, airplane, car, submarine and military tank.

The replicas are made using the materials and techniques of 15th-century Italy. Some of the inventions are scaled down, some are lifesized and others are oversized and some have mechanisms visitors can try for themselves.

Ballet companies help children, homeless Wonderbound and Colorado Ballet put on dance classes for all members of community

Every Tuesday morning, a bus rolls up outside 1075 Santa Fe Dr., bringing a full class of preschoolers to Colorado Ballet for their free weekly dance class.

Those preschoolers go to the school at Warren Village, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting low-income, single-parent families as they transition from poverty to economic stability.

For the preschoolers who attend the ballet classes, the experience feeds a passion for dance and movement that continues all week long.

“We hear from the parents that the kids dance at home,” said Kacy Grady, a preschool teacher from Warren Village. “We have girls that have gone out and bought ballet shoes — it’s been great to see.”

The program is just one of many in a city brimming with free and reduced-cost dance opportunities for all people in the community.

For years, Denver-based companies Colorado Ballet and Wonderbound have offered dance programs for a variety of groups across the community. And in 2019, their efforts continue to expand.

“For many young people, growing up to be a ballet dancer is a dream that they carry for

The company works hard to break down many of those barriers that low-income families face, such as securing transportation to dance classes and the cost associated with some classes, Aalbers said. “We really strive to get into as many pockets of the community as possible.”

For Colorado Ballet and Wonderbound, the desire to bring dance to the community manifests itself through a long list of ongoing opportunities.

Denver’s homeless find dance community in Wonderbound In a sense, Wonderbound’s community engagement efforts fell into place by chance.

When Wonderbound was located in its old

building at Park Avenue West and Broadway —the company has since moved to 2535 E. 40th Ave. — its dancers found themselves surrounded by people who would come into the studio after hearing the music from nearby.

of you hearing the music or seeing the dancing were really high.”

After talking with the visitors who came in, Turner and the others at Wonderbound learned that many were part of the homeless community. It wasn’t long before Wonderbound director Dawn Fay sought to create a program to give these visitors better access to the company’s opportunities.

The result: Pari Passu, a program in collaboration with the St. Francis Center in which instructor Heather Sutton and Wonderbound dancers lead dance classes for the city’s homeless population. These classes take place biweekly at the St. Francis Center, 2323 Curtis St., a refuge center for the city’s homeless.

“They can open up in a way that they don’t typically have the space to,” Turner said. “It gives them a way to come together and do something that everyone can do, which is dancing.”

In addition, she said, Wonderbound often takes participants to see free performances of Wonderbound shows, setting them up with snacks and the best seats in the house.

Wonderbound also puts on a variety of interactive performances in schools around the area, reaching about 22,000 students from Title I schools. These schools qualify for federal funding based on the number of their students who come from

low-income families .

“We really want to make dance accessible, because everyone should have access to the arts,” she said.

“The dancers and I really enjoy this side of what we do.”

Students ‘realize full potential’ at Colorado Ballet Likewise, Colorado Ballet has made a coordinated effort to make dance accessible to the entire community. The ballet brings no-cost or low-cost dance opportunities to more than 35,000 individuals in 300 schools and organizations each year, determined to promote three core benefits for each student.

“Our classes are really an opportunity for students to move their body, connect with others and experience creative self-expression in a supportive environment,” Aalbers said.

“Those are skills and experiences they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.”

Like Wonderbound, the ballet brings its work to schools in and around the Denver area, putting on series of after-school workshops, assemblies and field trips in which students can watch dress rehearsals at Colorado Ballet.

These efforts also demonstrate a dedication to serving Title I students — in particular, this population is served through the student-matinee field trips, at which more than 50 percent of attendees are Title I students.

“There’s no better feeling than when you see your child thriving,” said Jill Jones, whose six-year-old

The ballet also offers creative movement classes for all children in the area and their caregivers through its partnership with Denver Public Libraries. Designed for children ages 0-5, these classes take place in 32 different libraries, an expansion from 11 libraries over the past five years.

Upcoming library classes will be posted on the libraries’ online calendars. Aalbers said the ballet puts on about four library workshops per month.

“This outreach is a really important component of what we do at Colorado Ballet,” said artistic

director Gil Boggs. “And personally, it brings me great joy to see the way dance can light up a child’s face when they see it for the first time.”

For the preschoolers Grady teaches, that joy does not only stem from the dancing experience. It’s also a product of the connection the students have with their Colorado Ballet instructors and the encouragement they receive from them.

“We serve a lot of children who don’t necessarily get exposure to these kind of extracurricular activities,” Grady said. “This gives them a chance to realize what their full potential could be, and we are so grateful.”

DA VINCI QUICK FACTS Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in Anchiano, Italy, near the Tuscan town of Vinci.

He was born out of wedlock to a notary and a peasant woman.

As da Vinci is most well-known for his artwork, his creations in the medium take a special place in the exhibit. There are print reproductions of his Florentine oil paintings, like “The Annunciation” and “Virgin on the Rocks.” There is also an animation of “The Last Supper,” which provides a look at what makes it such a unique work.

One highlight of the exhibit is the use of the state-ofthe-art SENSORY4 technology, which uses high-definition motion graphics and surround sound, combined with authentic photography and video footage. The end result gives the visitor a feeling of being immersed in da Vinci’s mind.

Unsurprisingly, its da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” that gets the most in-depth exploration. The exhibit provides an analysis of the iconic painting conducted at the Louvre by scientific engineer and photographer Pascal Cotte.

According to the museum’s information, the display includes super-magnified examinations, a 13-foot-high infrared print and the only 360-degree replica ever made of “Mona Lisa.”

The museum prides itself on bringing its own touch to the exhibits, and that shines through in the presence of the museum’s enactors, who will be wandering through the exhibit as characters who bring a personal perspective to the story of da Vinci and the age in which he lived.

As da Vinci neared the end of his life, he supposedly said “I have offended God and mankind because my work did not reach the quality it should have.”

Experiencing the exhibit, it becomes difficult to believe that anyone could have achieved more. Instead, and by design, it invited the visitor to consider what da Vinci would think about modern advancements.

“We want people to ask themselves, ‘What would Leonardo think?’ about life today,” Nash said. “I think, if nothing else, his to-do list would be much longer and more interesting.”

da Vinci never received a traditional formal education. His natural gifts caught the attention of his mentors.

After suffering a stroke in 1517, da Vinci died on May 2, 1519, in Clos Lucé, France. He is buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert in the castle of Amboise.

Adolph Coors is likely smiling down at Colorado beer drinkers as they sip on his Batch 19 brew.

It makes brewers “feel good seeing people enjoy something they created,” said David Coors, president of AC Golden Brewing Company. “We decided (Batch 19) was too good not to share with the rest of beer community.”

Mid-January, AC Golden Brewing Company re-released its Batch 19 beer — a brew with a hoppy taste balanced by a subtle caramel maltiness.

“There’s been some pent-up demand for it since 2015,” Coors said. “People are ecstatic to have it back.”

Batch 19 was available for about five years beginning in 2010. However, prior to that, nobody had been able to enjoy the beer since Adolph Coors, founder of the Coors Brewery in Golden in 1873, was brewing it back in 1913.

“It’s a nod to an era,” said David Coors, who is the great-great-grandson of Adolph Coors.

“This is a style of beer you would find in Colorado prior to prohibition.”

The recipe was discovered in Adolph Coors’ handwritten logbook, kept under “lock and key” in the Coors Brewery’s archives, David Coors said. It is made with a rare combination of noble hops and two malts, giving it a biscuit-like aroma with spicy, herbal notes and a deep golden color that’s naturally filtered and unpasteurized.

For now, Batch 19 is only available in Colorado at select establishments, and only on tap.

“I really like the history of the beer,” said Mike Hoffman, a Golden resident and patron of Miners Saloon, a Gold Rush-inspired foodand-beverage venue in downtown Golden.

“And it pairs nicely with the (restaurant’s) spiced candied bacon.”

The appetizer is made of bacon, bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup and Aleppo pepper.

Miners Saloon takes pride in pairing rustic cuisine with rustic beer, said Noah Heaney, co-owner of Miners Saloon. In addition, Batch 19 has a lower alcohol content — 5.5 percent ABV — than most beers, Heaney said, so it makes a perfect lunch beer.

But, agreeing with Hoffman, Heaney believes the best part about Batch 19 is the history.

“We’re serving up a little piece of history,” Heaney said, “here in Golden, where it began.”
