DEVELOPMENT New office building in Cherry Creek A new office building has been proposed to be built on the corner of Second Avenue and Adams Street in Cherry Creek.

BusinessDen reported the building is proposed to be about 60,000 square-feet, with retail and lobby space on the ground floor, four levels of high-end office space and two levels of underground parking.

The site is 0.29-acres located at 3250 E. Second Ave. Developers hope to have a groundbreaking on the new development by the third quarter of 2020, according to BusinessDen.

BUSINESS OPENINGS Urban Egg The Urban Egg will be opening a location at 3033 E. 1st Ave. in Cherry Creek, BusinessDen reported.

The Cheery Creek location will be the breakfast restaurant chain’s ninth Colorado location.

Junction Food & Drink Junction Food & Drink, a food hall expected to open in April, has announced 10 of its tenants. The food hall is located at 2000 S. Colorado Blvd. in the University Hills neighborhood.

According to BusinessDen, the tenants are: Big Wave Taco Shop, Bird on a Wire Southern Chick’n, Ebisu Ramen and Sushi, Grind and Grill Burger, Lazo Empanadas, Mr. Miner’s Meat and Cheese, Paciugo Gelato, Pete’s-A-Pie of Denver, Shawarma Shack and Smok Barbeque.

Southern Roots Boutique Southern Roots Boutique, a clothing and accessories store at 2827 E. 3rd Ave. in Cherry Creek, closed in early January, according to the store’s Facebook page.

According to BusinessDen, a “women’s boutique based in Massachusetts is interested in leasing the space,” which is about 1,365 square-feet.

Marmot An outdoors clothing brand has closed its brick-and-mortar location in Cherry Creek after about five years of operating there, according to BusinessDen. Marmot was located at 105 Fillmore St., Suite 107.

There are still Marmot retail stores in Colorado, and the Marmot brand can still be found in other outdoors retail stores.

CHANGES Del Frisco’s Grille Del Frisco’s Grille in Cherry Creek has unveiled new lunch and dinner menus that include additional steak offerings, surf-and-turf choices and a plant-based burger; as well as lighter lunch fare, sharable plates, mix-andmatch options and new side items.

The new menu was inspired by customer feedback, states a news release.

Bonnie Brae Liquor Three longtime friends local to Colorado have taken ownership of Bonnie Brae Liquor, 785 S. University Blvd., BusinessDen reported.

The new owners are Annie Bachman, Bruce Gallagher and Dane Harbaugh.

BusinessDen reported that the three did not buy the real estate and that the business’ landlord also is the property owner of Bonnie Brae Ice Cream.

A new Montessori preschool has opened in Denver’s Baker neighborhood. Co-founders and teachers Sarah Johnson and Amanda Clarke hosted Echinacea Montessori’s grand opening on Feb. 19 at the school, a converted coffee shop, located at 300 Elati St. The first day of school was March 2. Effort brings music to life for Colorado students Gently used band or orchestra instruments collected for school programs Staff report The annual Bringing Music to Life Instrument Drive kicks off March 2, continuing its mission to bring the gift of music to Colorado students in underfunded music programs.

This is the 10th year for the instrument drive, which has impacted the lives of 15,000 children in hundreds of elementary, middle and high schools in Colorado. To date, more than 5,000 instruments have been awarded with a value exceeding $2 million.

Coloradans are asked to bring their gently used band or orchestra instruments to any of 17 donation stations from March 2-15. Instrument donations may be tax deductible. Drop-off locations can be found at www.bringmusic.org.

Donated instruments are repaired by technicians at the Colorado Institute of Musical Instrument Technology and Boomer Music Company in Fort Collins, and will be donated to music school programs before the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

“Our band program has been able to continuously improve due to the gen-

erosity of Bringing Music to Life,” Ouray School music teacher Michael Scott said in a news release. “We currently are able to offer band to all students in grades 5 and 6, while our high school program also continues to improve.”

At Denver’s North High School, music teacher Katy Lushman has been able to start a Modern Band program and says her students love it.

“This class has given me access to instruments that I’ve never had access to before.

I really enjoy being able to play electric guitar and bass. It’s a new experience,” one of Lushman’s students said.

Another said, “It’s helped me discover my love for music and for playing.”

At Ranum Middle School in Denver, a student’s new instrument “has helped me become more creative … It has opened a door to music.”

Bringing Music to Life was founded in 2013 by executive director Steve Blatt as a project of the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center to continue the instrument drives he had established and managed at Colorado Public Radio.

“Study after study shows the positive impact that learning music has on children,” Blatt said in the news release. “Their listening skills improve, as well as creative

Shiki Dreams offers escape

Immersive exhibit open until May

hiki Dreams is meant to be a respite from the everyday world.

Shiki Dreams is a pop-up immersive art installation located at 2219 E. 21st Ave., which is in the northeast vicinity of Denver’s City Park West neighborhood.

The 1,200-square-foot art exhibit creates an imaginative step into the world of Shiki, the spiritual yeti guide and leader of the Spirits of the Forest from Natura.

It explores the dreams of this wise spirit in a multi-sensory experience.

“We’re thrilled to provide an opportunity for the public to continue its journey alongside Shiki through this one-of-a-kind pop-up experience in our studio space,” said Eric Jaenike, co-founder of Prismajic, the creative group presenting the exhibit. “Visitors are invited to explore a journey of magic and discovery in an interactive exhibit incorporating augmented reality and digital technologies.”

Changing neighborhoods inspire local author’s debut novel ‘Secrets from the Past’ is a ghost story with romance, history

A common concern among many in the Denver area is the loss of historic buildings and homes — structures that serve as a tangible testament to the Mile-High City’s long and varied history.

Longtime West Washington Park resident Pat Shipley, and the lead character of her debut novel, Cassie Hart, understands this sentiment well. Shipley’s love for her 113-year-old home and her distress at seeing so many similar homes being knocked down and replaced with new, modern condos inspired her to tackle the subject in “Secrets from the Past.”

“The inspiration for ‘Secrets from the Past’ was seeing this happening all too often and changing the quaint feel of our neighborhood,” Shipley said. “I did quite a bit of

research when writing this novel, including understanding the processes involved in trying to save an old house from demolition.”

Shipley’s book is now available on Amazon Kindle. It follows the 28-year-old Cassie, who finds herself unemployed, broken-hearted and still dealing with the pain that comes with being abandoned as a child. She takes all that feeling and energy and puts it into saving a 130-year-old cottage slated for demolition in the old part of Denver.

In the process of saving the cottage, she receives visits from a small child that only Cassie can see. This raises all manner of questions, most pressingly, who is this ghost and why does it want Cassie to know all about her death?

Throw in a developer with an undeniable attraction to Cassie, and the end result is a book with something for everyone.

“It took about six months to write ‘Secrets from the Past’ and then another six months to edit and polish it. The fun research involved reading about ghosts and developing a believable plot,” Shipley said. “Denver’s libraries offer excellent research resources and great tech help, which is how I was able

Shipley has lived in her historic cottage for 33 years. She has been a writer in several different fields, including local newspapers, writing press releases and annual reports for a local school district, and grant writing and fundraising for an education foundation.

That love of all things Denver not only comes across in the book, but also in Shipley’s appreciation for the resources which helped her in the writing process.

“Denver has some outstanding book stores, but I think the city’s best literary secret is its libraries. I visit our local library at least once a week and can spend the whole day there,” Shipley said. “If you like character-driven stories about finding love in unexpected places with an unforeseen ending, you won’t be able to put this book down.”

“It’s always been our plan to continue our narratives,” Mosquera said, adding the exploration of Shiki is just one story inside Natura.

Those who visited the world of Natura will find both similarities and differences in Shiki Dreams. Some of the anchor pieces that are repeated include the trees that twist and turn, blacklight elements and strategically placed

surprises. Some new elements revolve around the depth of technology used to bring the story to life. This includes augmented reality, animation and music.

“We are very much focused on creating intimate experiences,” Jaenike said, adding that admission to the exhibit is limited. And “not just crowding people in here.”

‘TAKING CARE OF OUR STRAY ANIMALS’

A typical day at Denver Animal Protection starts with checking on the welfare of sick and injured animals, and treating them.

After that, staffers will perform about 20 surgeries each day.

But a recent day brought an emergency surgery to the routine: A kitten had gotten caught on a fence, with a wire wrapped around its foot for a lengthy period of time. The kitten’s owners couldn’t free the animal, so they called Animal Protection officers for help.

The officers were able to remove the kitten from the fence but its leg was badly damaged.

“We did the surgery,” said Dr. Louisa Poon, DAP veterinarian. “The thread was nonviable, and we had to amputate the leg because it had lacked a blood supply for a long time.”

However, she expects the cat to fully recover, then be put up for adoption.

But all other animals needing help are welcome at Denver Animal Protection, which operates the Denver Animal Shelter at 1241 W. Bayaud Ave., south of downtown.

The shelter takes in about 7,000 animals each year and can hold about 450 at a time.

“We are open admission,” said Dr. Louisa Poon, DAP veterinarian. “We’ll take any animal, except for primates.”

And that has included dogs, cats, fish, turtles, pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs and others.

“We only treat strays and shelterowned animals,” Poon said. “Our business model is to provide the best care we can with our resources for homeless and strays.”

Some are victims of cruelty or neglect, she said.

Poon said the only treatment they can’t give is setting broken bones. For that, she reaches out to a community partner.

DAP has about 55 employees. Poon’s staff includes Dr. Beverly Chua, a parttimer; three full-time vet techs and one part-time vet tech.

Under the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment, DAP is a governmental entity, but also relies on donations and grants to help it take proper care of animals, perform lifesaving surgeries and find homes for them.

In 2019, DAP raised about $300,000 in the community.

“We don’t turn away any animals, and it (treating animals) may exceed our city budget,” Poon said, explaining the importance of donations.

DAP recently was accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association, and is one of three municipal shelter clinics in the nation to earn AAHA ac-

creditation.

One of the other shelters is also in Colorado: the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

Unlike hospitals for people, not all animal hospitals and shelters have to be accredited.

The nonprofit AAHA determines criteria — some mandatory, others highly recommended — for vet clinics.

It evaluates entities on about 900 quality standards that go beyond state regulations.

“You have to make sure you comply with their recommendations in order to get the accreditation,” Poon said.

Criteria cover many areas such as anesthesia setups, how to monitor animals, the proper handling of controlled substances, patient care, pain management, medical diagnosis and many more.

DAP made a number of changes in order to meet the criteria, such as getting new equipment, including a full-body X-ray machine that cost $50,000 — raised by donations and grants — and a dental X-ray machine.

It also re-trained staffers, initiated new protocols and took other steps to satisfy the criteria.

“We tried to implement everything recommended,” Poon said. “The AAHA comes out and does an evaluation, onsite, to make sure you’re compliant with their mandatory criteria before you get accredited. It took a little while longer than I wanted, but in the end, we got it done - while maintaining a full load and taking care of our stray animals.”

AAHA is the only organization that accredits vet practices in the United States and Canada. Fewer than 20% are accredited, according to DAP. DAP earned its accreditation on Dec. 30, 2019. Its next application for renewal is scheduled for December 2021 “and if all goes well, then after that, it’s every three years,” Poon said.

Clock ticking on options to control geese population Egg oiling, culling being considered as nesting season nears

T

he best way to manage Denver’s goose population is not by culling, but oiling eggs — in far greater numbers than Denver Parks and Recreation has done in the past, say local goose advocates.

But the clock is ticking.

“The optimal time to oil is between April 1 and April 10,” said Courtney DeWinter, spokesperson for Canada Geese Protection Colorado (CGPC), “which means we have only a few weeks.”

In that time, she hopes to gain the city’s support and mobilize the manpower needed to oil eggs en masse — a labor-intensive process that would extend far beyond public parks to private properties where geese also nest.

To have the needed effect, CGPC believes 10,000 to 12,000 eggs would need to be oiled, which is nearly triple the amount Denver Parks has oiled in the past as part of its own program.

“We are practical problem solvers,” DeWinter said. “This is a financially feasible solution we’re asking the city to deploy instead of killing. It’s an amazing opportunity to make a dent on the population in a humane fashion.”

Condoned by the Humane Society of the United States as “the humane way to limit flock growth and stabilize goose populations,” oiling works by blocking the passage of air through the shell, preventing the embryo from developing. However, timing of the oiling is critical. To do so humanely, the process must be completed before the eggs begin to develop. Eggs can be tested to determine the stage of development by putting them in water. Developing eggs will float and should not be oiled.

Last year’s decision to cull In June and July 2019, Denver Parks partnered with the United States Department of Agriculture to round up about 1,700 geese from four city parks, including Washington and City parks. The geese were killed at a northern Colorado processing plant and their meat was distributed to families in need.

Denver Parks’ website says the decision to cull followed 15 years of goose management tactics — including oiling — that failed to keep the population in check, resulting in “an unnatural number of geese” in the parks, and an amount of goose excrement that degraded the environment and the park experience.

Denver Parks has a three-year contract with the USDA, but the city said it is still considering its plan for 2020.

Cynthia Karvaski, spokesperson for Denver Parks, said a decision on whether to cull this year will be made after counts of the geese that are still in the parks are conducted sometime in May. Any decision regarding culling will be made prior to molting season, which begins in June or July.

She added the 2019 action was a last resort.

“We were always hoping it wouldn’t come to that, but unfortunately the population

is no longer manageable,” Karvaski said.

“And while we’ve heard from people that are against it, we are receiving hundreds and hundreds of messages from people saying ‘thank you.’”

Still, the city will continue a multi-pronged approach to the issue, Karvaski said, and this year, will partner with CGPC for the effort.

In 2019, Kavarski said Denver Parks oiled about 3,100 eggs. She estimates at least that many will be oiled this year as well.

But DeWinter said Denver Parks hasn’t oiled enough eggs in the past to put a significant dent in the goose population. Denver Parks estimates its parks are home to about 5,000 resident geese — those born in Denver that live here year-round. A separate population of migratory geese flies to Denver from Canada each fall, but most migrate back to Canada in the spring.

DeWinter argues that because the female goose lays an average of five eggs, the city’s oiling effort is only about one-third of what needs to be done.

Heavy oiling in coastal areas Similar egg oiling programs have been used in communities across the country.

Greenwich, Connecticut, started a goose management program 15 years ago based on egg oiling, hazing and public education.

Director of Environmental Affairs Patricia Sesto said the community was motivated to take action because of concerns about bacteria from goose waste on beaches and in the water.

There, geese are hazed with dogs and eggs are oiled on city and private property.

While the dog hazing keeps geese away from specific waterways and properties, Sesto said, “hazing doesn’t manage the population. It just manages those particular geese on a particular property. The oiling changes the population.”

Greenwich’s program also includes educating residents on how to oil the eggs themselves, but residents can also allow the city to do so, Sesto said.

Controlling a goose overpopulation “is not just a municipal solution. It has to be a community solution,” Sesto said. “If you’re only doing it in public parks, you’ll never get a handle on it.”

Despite the success of Greenwich’s nonlethal program, Sesto doesn’t oppose culling if a big population reduction is needed.

“Euthanasia is going to knock the population down, then you can hold that steady with the egg oiling,” Sesto said.

The GeesePeace program Greenwich’s program was based on a protocol created by a Virginia-based nonprofit called GeesePeace, which advocates a threepronged approach of egg oiling, dog hazing and an educational campaign urging people not to feed geese.

GeesePeace national program director David Feld, a retired engineer from Virginia, co-founded the program in 1999 because of a conflict concerning geese in his community.

Feld attended a January meeting in Denver about the local Canada goose issue.

In addition to oiling, Feld said the key is to make Denver’s waterways — which serve as safe retreats for geese where most predators can’t go — undesirable for geese. That’s done with dogs on shore and in boats on the water, stationed during a specific time period.

Feld said the program is low cost and effective, in large part because it taps into a Canada goose’s inbred desire to fly north — an instinct Feld said is present even in nonmigratory resident geese like those found in Denver.

If geese find the environment undesirable, they’ll go elsewhere, Feld said.

“It always works,” he said. “They either fly north or fly to other water bodies.”

Geese won’t leave an area, however, Feld added, if they have goslings, which is why he believes egg oiling is also critical.

“I’m not a goose lover. I’m an engineer and I like to solve problems,” he said. “This is high gain and low cost. It gets both sides

working together instead of fighting. Right now in Denver, you have a broken community. There’s no reason why that should be.”

Culling a common practice Washington Park resident Steve Spirn, who represents Citizens to Restore the Parks, said his group supports any method that will keep Denver parks free of goose waste.

He and his neighbors helped create the citizen group in 2016, garnering support from 1,500 people who signed a petition to resolve the issue.

“Our issue has been about not stepping in goose poop,” Spirn said. “There are legitimate health and safety issues. We’ve collected at least 50 scientific and medical papers to support that. And overpopulation can cause problems, including for the geese themselves.”

Spirn added that Citizens to Restore the Parks encouraged city council and the parks department to take nonlethal action, but was content with Denver Parks’ decision to cull.

“You move to Colorado and Denver for nature, and animals are part of nature,” Spirn said. “The difference is this — the nonlethal doesn’t work. Our position was and is the last step may have to be lethal.”

He said the group felt the overpopulation of geese in parks got to the point that culling was necessary, which in turn, likely reduced some of the health and safety issues.

“We don’t have enough expertise to know what else they could have done short of culling,” Spirn said. “We’d be most happy if nonlethal would work. If there are other methods to be tried, we’re in favor. But we’re also realistic.”

Denver Parks’ Karvaski said culling is a commonly used technique, often implemented with no public input or objection.

“We have, for years, taken community input regarding the situation,” Karvaski said.

“But we’ve been tasked with the management of wildlife in the city. We make the best decision we can based on that responsibility.”

In early January, the two women opened their shop, The CBD Suite, in Washington Park at 1078 S. Gaylord St. to let people explore CBD. CBD is the abbreviated name for cannabidiol, which is found in cannabis plants.

It is thought to help stop muscle and joint pain, promote muscle relaxation and relieve anxiety, among other ailments.

The CBD Suite carries a multitude of products ranging from tinctures and vapes, to skincare and edibles such as honey and spices. The shop also carries pet health-andwellness products.

Kiley and Bowers have set up what they call testing stations in the boutique-style shop.

These are where people may sample various products in the store, such as lotions or gummies. The two also plan to host various events at the shop, such as visiting brand reps and/ or education, mindfulness and health-andwellness events.

“The shop was designed to encourage the

community to taste, try, learn and explore all things CBD,” Kiley said. “We wanted to highlight how multifaceted and exciting the properties of hemp are.”

Both hemp and marijuana come from the same cannabis species, but hemp is the nonintoxicating variety of the cannabis plant.

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive compound in marijuana and its consumption is what makes a person feel high.

“All our products are federally legal,” Bowers said, “and contain zero THC, or the minuscule 0.3% federal legal limit that is nonpsychoactive or intoxicating.”

Kiley and Bowers both have a background in aesthetic beauty — Kiley is a licensed aesthetician and Bowers worked in medical management dealing with both eastern and western medicine.

“Our shop was designed and built to model a high end, excellent customer service experience,” Bowers said, “without the slightest resemblance of a head shop or dispensary.”

Neither are medical doctors and cannot diagnose ailments or prescribe cures. However, both Kiley and Bowers are happy to discuss what they’ve learned about CBD’s benefits as an alternative medicine, and recommend products that people can use as a daily SEE CBD, P9

Two artists have been teaching community workshops for more than a decade

Drawing workshops with Susan Rubin and Marjorie Leggitt are offered seven to nine times a year. They take place for five hours a day on either two or four consecutive days a week.

The workshops take place in a private studio in Denver’s

Platt Park neighborhood. The location is provided upon registration.

Rubin and Leggitt offer a Basics Bootcamp once a year, but it is a not a prerequisite for any of their Back to Basics or Beyond the Basics workshops.

Each class is limited to 12 people so students get the highest quality of experience during the workshop as well as one-onone instruction.

The classes are observational drawing workshops, with subject matter that’s readily available in any home — though Rubin and Leggitt bring the objects, which can be anything from feathers to kitchen utensils to shoes.

People have many different reasons for wanting to learn to draw or polish their skill, Leggitt said. For example, she and Rubin said they’ve heard their students say they took the class so they could sketch when travelling, and others so they could draw their own greeting cards.

The two women “tag-team teach” the classes, they said, but each has their specialty and bring their combined expertise to the workshops.

“I love passing my artistic expertise onto new students, but it’s also a reciprocal thing,” Leggitt said. “I learn just as much from them as they learn from me.”

Kiley and Bowers feel it is important for all people interested in CBD products to be smart consumers, such as know how to read a lab report, for example. In addition to their shop having undergone all the inspections, licensing and approval processes with the city of Denver, the two business owners carry only pre-established brands and have tested every product they sell.

“It’s such a new industry and it’s hard to find a trusted source,” Kiley said of CBD. “We wanted to create a space where people can feel comfortable talking to a trusted source about ailments and how CBD can help.”

Through the years, the two have taught thousands of people to draw.

Rubin and Leggitt are friends, professional artists and experienced art instructors.

“Drawing is a skill set, not an innate talent,” Rubin said. “I love those aha moments when a student realizes they can draw.”

Leggitt and Rubin have known each other since 1973. Both grew up in the Denver metro area, but met while attending Colorado College, a private liberal arts college in Colorado Springs. After college, they went their separate ways — Leggitt became a science illustrator and Rubin became a botanical artist.

But in 1990, the two women reconnected through the Denver Botanic Gardens. Leggitt was teaching a class there, and Rubin had signed up for her class, not knowing her college friend was the instructor.

The two became colleagues in 1998 when Rubin began teaching at the Denver Botanic Gardens. She retired from there in December and Leggitt still teaches there.

“We’ve always enjoyed each other’s company,” Leggitt said, and “decided we wanted to promote basic, foundation drawing classes.”

Thus, their community drawing classes began. Starting off in the Washington Park neighborhood in summer 2009, the two artists have since moved their classes to a private studio in Platte Park.

Any teen or adult in the community is welcome to take the classes, which are meant to be a challenge, yet accessible, for all level of art students, the artists said.

Winter folklore and springtime urban legends

unxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow on Feb. 2, so in modern American folklore, that means we will have an early spring.

However, Punxsutawney Phil lives in Pennsylvania. And as a Coloradan, I questioned his accuracy and turned to Flatiron Freddy for a closerto-home prediction. The City of Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks posted on its Facebook page on Feb. 2 that this marmot did see his shadow, thus predicting six more weeks of winter.

So which do we believe — the groundhog in Pennsylvania that has been seeking out his shadow each Groundhog’s Day for 124 years, or the local groundhog, which is likely more in tune to our unique, unpredictable Colorado weather.

Most Coloradans will tell you that March is our snowiest month. Afterall, it was March 14 last year when we experienced the bomb cyclone and about

7 inches of snow fell in Denver during a 24-hour period. Those who have lived in Colorado for a while will remember the March 2003 blizzard when more than two feet of snow — 31.8 inches according to Weather5280.com — fell in Denver between March 17-19. And 20 years prior, on March 5-6, a storm brought 18.7 inches of snow to the city.

For those who prefer even more data, The Weather Channel’s website states that March is indeed Denver’s snowiest month, averaging just less than a foot of snowfall throughout the month.

But on the other hand, we Coloradans boast 300 days of sunshine. Surely at least some of the 31 days in March contribute to that, considering the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere happens sometime between March 19-21 each year.

Still, some say that Colorado’s 300 days of sunshine is an urban legend among locals, noting the

the statement’s inacurracy stems from the fact that some of those days only see a couple hours of full sun.

No matter that it’s not scientifically proven, I will continue to brag on this state’s amount of sunshine.

There’s nothing like waking up to the sun shining through my window following a prior day’s snowstorm. On those days, that fresh blanket of snow seems to make the sun shine that much brighter.

And it’s fun to see people getting out to enjoy the sunny day — carefully avoiding slush puddles during a jog in the park or using a winter coat as a seat cover to lunch on a venue’s outdoor patio.

But there is also something to be said about the sense of togetherness that accompanies a snowstorm. I believe the “we’re all in this together”

ime flies. My two little ones — which many of you have watched grow up in the neighborhood and on my campaign literature — are both middle schoolers now. It is a brave new world as a GUEST dad. With bigger kids COLUMN come bigger conversations.

A couple of weeks ago, I was chatting with my kids and my daughter said, “someday when I have kids…” But then she paused, stopped and said, “if there is even a planet left for them to live on.”

Councilmember Not a day goes by Jolon Clark when climate change, loss of species and biodiversity and the degradation of our planet due to our addiction to plastic and our single-use mentality, is not dominating the headlines. Middle school is hard enough without additionally having the weight of what is happening to our world on your shoulders.

Last September, a group of high school students from the Denver School of the Arts invited me to meet them at City Park because they were walking out of school to go on strike to demand action on climate change. After a few speeches, they passed the microphone around to anyone who wanted to speak on why they had walked out of school. It was powerful.

It was impassioned. It was heartbreaking. Here were young people, still children under the law,

just about to step into the daunting world of being an adult and they were afraid. They were mad. One of them started by saying she wished she could just be a kid and be in school right now. But none of the adults were listening that her future hung in the balance, and she just had to do something. So she walked out.

I won’t dive into all of the science, but it is clear. We should have taken bold action decades ago. For every day we wait, it gets harder to imagine how we could possibly make the changes today that will be necessary to avoid the worst that comes with the rise in global temperature, which we have set in motion. It can be done, but it will be harder and more painful for all of us today because of our inaction yesterday. If we wait until tomorrow, it will be so much harder and so much more painful. At some point, it will no longer be possible at all.

One of my favorite quotes, which I have found hard to find a solid attribution for, is, “we do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” We are borrowing this place, this planet, our home, from our children, and they are standing up to tell us that we are doing a spectacularly terrible job at it.

Our kids should be able to go back to worrying about the things that middle schoolers and high schoolers have to worry about. They shouldn’t have to worry about us leaving them with a planet that has been used and abused to the point that it is no longer safe for them. We need to show them that we will return what we have borrowed in better condition than it was when it was handed to us by our parents.

It is time to do better. It is time for us to hear the pain and fear in our children’s voices.

It is time to stand up and show them what

we are capable of and what we are willing to sacrifice. It is time to show them that we care more about them than we care about the conveniences our reliance on an unsustainable lifestyle demands. It will not be easy, but we cannot wait, hesitate or put it off for tomorrow.

It is time for action.

In December, Denver City Council approved a new building code with more stringent environmental regulations, and for the first time ever, also approved a Green Stretch Code that goes even further. We also created a new Office of Climate Action, Sustainability, and Resiliency under the mayor, and we advanced a budget with $8 million of new money dedicated to accelerating our climate work. We passed a new fee on all single-use bags that will start in July, and we are exploring a complete overhaul of our waste collection systems to ensure that compostable and recyclable materials are diverted from the landfill to be reused. In January, we launched a new task force dedicated to tackling climate change and ensuring that Denver is meeting all of the science-based standards around global temperature rise. The task force is working to come forward with additional policy and funding recommendations by the end of April.

Our children have stood up. They have demanded action. They are hoping that someone will listen and hear their voice. I am standing up to tell them, “I hear you, and I am taking action.” I hope you will stand up with me.

Their future depends on it.

The oil and gas wars continue

I

want to start my column this month by calling out Democratic Sen. Angela Williams from District 33 in Denver, who joined ENVIRONMENT with two Republicans WITH EAN on the Local Government Committee to kill a bill that would have lifted the preemption on local control of plastics.

This bill would have Ean Thomas Tafoya allowed Denver to pass legislation to improve water quality and reduce waste. As a reminder, Denver has already passed a fee in an attempt to curb consumption, but could not ban due to the preemption by the state.

Those who work in environmental policy were left in shock by this vote.

Spring seed sowing can start indoors soon

S

pring is still a while away, but the time to start seeds indoors for your vegetable, annual and perennial gardens is very soon.

Starting your own plants from seed can GUEST be highly rewarding COLUMN since you get to see Andrew Habig the entire life of the plant from germination to flowering and fruiting. Growing from seed also opens a greater world of diversity of shapes, colors and flavors that aren’t available as plants in spring.

Many of the commonly grown vegetable and annual bedding plants are easily grown from seed. Everything you’ll need to be successful can be found at your local, independent garden center. Here are just a few pointers that will help you be successful with your first attempts at starting seeds.

Use a peat-based soil mix that is labeled for seed starting. Garden soil is too heavy and won’t dry down enough to keep seeds from dying from dampening off, which is caused by fungi when seedlings are kept wet for too long.

Seedlings need lots of light. Unless you have a greenhouse or a window that gets a few hours of direct sun each day, you’ll likely need to give your seedlings supplemental light. It’s easier and cheaper than ever to get good grow lights for seed starting. Full spectrum LED bulbs that fit into a standard socket can be found at your local hardware store or garden center. The LED bulbs are nice because they don’t put off the heat of an incandescent bulb.

Position the bulbs within six inches of the seedlings.

It’s also important to not start seeds too early. You don’t want your plants languishing

declining revenues and shifts to electrification, these companies see the expansion of the plastics market as a way to hedge their bets by expanding the plastics market. But many organizations and leaders see the “writing on the wall” and are seeking to rein in plastic consumption. In February, The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act was introduced in the U.S. Senate, in attempt to move away from tsingle use, and towards restricting the growth nof the sector and improving recycling rates and methods. So why would Williams kill this lbill?

According to an analysis by 350 Colorado, the Colorado Public Employees Retirement Association, aka PERA, has more than $1.5 billion of its holdings invested into more than 300 fossil fuel companies. One such company is Extraction LLC, the notorious company that drilled and is operating a well across the street from the Bella Romero school in Greeley. This has spurred statewide initiatives from residents and Colorado Rising, an anti-fracking group, as well as the arrest of 38 activists — nicknamed the Capitol 38 — at the State of the State address in January.

Last year, Denver began divesting $180 million from its pension fund. In March, there will be a similar bill moving through the Colorado legislature and I encourage you to support it.

Continuing to fund the climate crisis while passing policy to shift energy isn’t a wise investment of these PERA funds.

and overgrowing your indoor space while it’s still frosty outside. Follow the timing information provided on your seed packet. If no information is provided, there are many online resources.

Also follow the instructions on the seed packet for depth of sowing. Different plants have different needs — some need to be fully buried and some need to be surface sown.

Gently water, being especially careful if seeds are surface sown so you don’t wash them away.

Keep the soil at a high moisture level until they germinate. After germination, let the soil dry out slightly between watering. Watering too often will cause dampening off which kills seedlings. Touch the surface of the soil daily to see if watering is needed. If the soil feels wet, don’t water. If it feels lightly moist to almost dry, it’s time to water. Don’t let the soil get fully dry or the seedling will wilt and die. A small fan near the seeding area can help if you’re having trouble with dampening off. If your new seedlings die, don’t fret. Try again with fresh soil and clean containers, knowing that failure is the root of learning!

Speaking of state budgets and revenues, the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission was audited — a report stated a majority of the industry was not in compliance with monthly reporting and paying required severance tax. According to a 2016-18 analysis of the report by the Denver Post, of the 420 operators actively producing oil and gas, 316 turned in 1,209 required, monthly well reports incomplete, and/or failed to submit as many as 50,055 well reports. In fact, it was found that the lost revenue and fines summed up to $308 million. So the next time the industry touts tax revenue to the state, let’s remember their lack of compliance.

Here in Denver, there are two efforts afoot to restrict fossil fuel extraction. The first is from Councilwoman Amanda Sawyer, which seeks voter approval before any of the more than 60 wells at DIA are reopened or more are drilled. The second is an effort by Resilient Denver, a resident group for which, in disclosure, I serve as the spokesperson.

Resilient Denver has filed for a charter amendment that would prohibit fossil fuel extraction in Denver, prohibit the storage of toxic and radioactive wastewater in Denver and prohibit forced pooling and horizontal fracking from neighboring counties.

At last year’s signing of SB-181, which is known as the Health and Safety First bill, Gov. Jared Polis declared the oil and gas wars over, but it is clear they have only just begun.

mentality is inherently in every Coloradan during snowstorms. It’s not uncommon for coworkers who own four-wheel drive vehicles to offer their colleagues a carpool to work, or to see an able-bodied teen spend afterschool hours shoveling snow for his or her senior-aged neighbors.

I even got to help two people while out-and-about covering stories in February. The first was providing a jump to a person whose car had a dead battery, a common wintertime nuisance.

Back in November, my dad gave me a box of sand to store in my car after I got stuck visiting with my family in Bailey.

I’ve been driving around with it ever since, which brings me to the second time I was able to lend a hand.

A woman was blocking traffic on a small side street — her tires spinning out, stuck on a sheet of ice — while a

man, presumably a stranger to her, was pushing her vehicle from behind with all his might. Since I was already stopped and watching all this happen, I got out of my car and offered them some sand. The man scooped a handful of it, methodically spread it around the tires of the woman’s car and with one final push, moments later, she was on her way, profusely thanking us and waving as she drove off.

I’m not sure about those groundhogs — Mother Nature is probably the only one who can accurately predict what’s to come in Denver this spring.

I might pay attention to Punxsutawney Phil and get out my flipflops on March 19 — the official first day of spring this year — just in case there’s an above-average high temperature of 65 or 70 degrees one day and I get to slip them on to take pictures in Washington Park.

But per Flatiron Freddy’s prediction, those flipflops will certainly be going in the backseat of my car, next to that box of sand and my ice scraper, ready for use during the next day’s springtime snowstorm.

4 Mistakes That Actually Make Knee Pain Worse 1. Rest - Surely, if you fall or have a traumatic event, the idea of rest for your knee should be used in the short term. But, what happens when you continue to rest your knee and the pain doesn’t improve? You guessed it! Your knee becomes weaker (lack of use) and more stiff or sore. So, if your knee pain doesn’t improve after a short period of time, an extended period of rest will definitely make your knee pain worse in the long run.

2. Medications - Similar to rest, taking pain pills, like anti-inflammatories and painkillers, might help for a short time following a knee injury. However, here’s what happens over time: the pills will mask your pain and you never really uncover the ROOT CAUSE of your pain. Treating the wrong cause for your knee pain will let pain go on for longer

than anyone would like.

3. Knee Braces - I have no problem with people wearing a brace from time to time, especially if you want a little support during a more active day.

However, if you are someone RELYING on a brace on a regular basis, you are missing something. Braces take over the actual job of muscles - providing stability. Until you figure out WHY your knee is feeling the need for a brace and you DO something about it, the feeling of instability isn’t likely going to improve and may get worse.

4. The Wrong Exercises - Doing many exercises that are from a book or a generic program given to you without a specific purpose is well-meaning advice, but will not get the results you want. Many people plateau and feel stuck seeing no improvements or feel worse with this type of program. That’s because they are not specific to your knee pain. They are a good starting point, but that’s about it. Environmental benefit, vintage popularity boost interest in thrift stores

A

rvada resident Eddie Marin has a passion for finding vintage items, and he shops at thrift stores at least twice a week. He looks for vintage sports T-shirts, old VHS tapes, hats, sweaters and more. Marin has found Star Wars lunchboxes from 1980, original Wheaties cereal boxes that feature Michael Jordan and vintage golf cleats from the early 1990s.

He’ll keep some of the items he’ll find at thrift stores, usually Denver Nuggets and Jordan apparel, or he’ll sell them at ThriftCon, a vintage clothing and collectible convention that takes places in Denver.

“Every vintage T-shirt or piece of clothing is unique. Nowadays, everyone uses the same designs and same material for their items,” said Marin. “Everything (from) back in the day feels much better, I think.”

Marin’s passion for vintage apparel and items is an example of why thrift stores have become more popular, according to Elena

Karpova, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Department of Consumer, Apparel and Retail Studies.

The online resale marketplace thredUP estimates the resale market in 2018 hit $24 billion. Other than vintage apparel being trendy, Karpova says there’s another drive for interest in thrift stores — helping the environment.

“You continuously hear about climate change and people realize, in my opinion, that we should do something about it. While few of us are able to make big sweeping changes in regulations, all of us as consumers and citizens can do some small changes in our daily lives that will help us to be more sustainable,” said Karpova. “Food and clothing are things we use daily. We can make a big impact and people realize that more and more.”

Social media has charged consumers to purchase new and cool trendy items, Karpova says in the book she helped co-author “Going Global: The Textile and Apparel Industry.”

market retailers responding to what is trendy.

Think of stores like H&M, Forever 21 and others.

The result of fast fashion leads to clothing becoming disposable like plastic bags, plastic utensils and paper plates, and according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a charity that works to accelerate the transition to a circular economy, one garbage truck of clothes is burned or landfilled every second.

“What is fashionable? Our perception has to change,” said Karpova. “If being sustainable and environmentally friendly becomes fashionable, it will completely change the consumption patterns. Just shopping secondhand isn’t going to solve it, but if I’m not buying new and I’m buying secondhand instead, I prevent clothing from going to the landfill.”

Thrifting to connect and make a difference You never know what you’re going to find at a thrift store. At Treasure Trunk Community Thrift Store in Wheat Ridge, which supports the human-services organization Family Tree, a pair of vintage handmade spurs came in this month, according to Rebekah Hawthorne, the store’s manager. The spurs were made in Colorado and featured a woman’s leg, complete with crosshatched fishnets. Treasure Trunk Community Thrift Store put the spurs for sale on eBay, and they sold for $500.

“Beyond the benefits of reducing and reusing, being involved in your local thrift store is a great way to connect with your community. Donating items you no longer need is a very direct way to help your neighbors and frees up your space in a positive way,” said Hawthorne. “Plus, it’s fun to see your stuff get new homes.”

Becky Watson, manager of Global Thrift in Arvada, says she sees familiar faces walk through the store’s doors regularly, making the location more personal.

“It’s their own community thrift store, and that’s kind of special,” said Watson. Global Thrift is operated by volunteers and benefits

“When it’s a thrift store that has a mission behind it, the community comes together, and it becomes a special place for the community as well,” she said.

Watson said she has seen books, tools, records, furniture, purses, toys and more come through Global Thrift. Instruments like guitars, organs and pianos have also been donated to the store.

“It’s always interesting when you have someone’s personal things. I think a lot of people are trying to simply their life and their spending as well,” said Watson. “(People) realize you don’t always have to buy a brandnew item when you can buy something at a lower cost. It’s reusing and being wise with your finances.”

Beer brewer, weed grower help environment CO2 capture technology reduces overall releases of greenhouse gases

W

hen a craft brewer has carbon dioxide and a marijuana grower needs carbon dioxide, it’s a classic Colorado story with an environmental benefit.

Three small businesses have teamed up to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through a pilot program facilitated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

“This is a classic win-win-win scenario,” said Kaitlin Urso, environmental protection specialist with the CDPHE. “We’re connecting companies that have excess carbon dioxide with companies that need it, and in the process, we’re reusing CO2 that would otherwise be released directly into the environment.”

The small businesses involved are Denver Beer Co., a Denver-based craft brewery; The Clinic, a marijuana dispensary chain located in and around Denver; and Earthly Labs, a Texasbased company that developed a CO2 capture technology specifically for small businesses.

How it works is Denver Beer Co. uses Earthly Labs’ specialized equipment, a plugn-play machine called CiCi, to capture carbon dioxide from the brewery’s fermentation tanks. Once captured, the gas goes through a three-step purifying process and is eventually converted to liquid. It is then transported in special, certified tanks to The Clinic’s cannabis growing facility. There, the tank is hooked up

to the growers’ system and the CO2 is released into the grow room, stimulating plant growth during cultivation.

The pilot program is not funded by the state, Urso said. She added the three businesses chose to partner and invest in the program.

The CDPHE’s role was connecting the three partners to one another, Urso said.

“It’s inspiring to see small businesses taking an investment in solutions … to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions,” Urso said.

Earthly Labs was founded in 2016 with the purpose of making carbon dioxide capture technology affordable to small businesses, said Amy George, founder and CEO. George has a background in the large industrial sector and realized there is a supplyand-demand need for CO2 among small business as well, particlarly craft breweries, George said.

“We are thrilled to help these industry pioneers reduce costs, drive innovation and improve the quality of life in Colorado,” George said of the partnership between Denver Beer Co. and The Clinic.

Earthly Labs’ overall goal, George added, is to avoid 1 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions across the nation by 2030.

“This is a real opportunity to keep (a significant amount of) CO2 out of the atmosphere,” George said.

Denver Beer Co. operates a brewery and taproom in Denver’s Highland neighborhood and another in Olde Town Arvada, and will be opening a third brewery and taproom at 2425 S. Downing St., which is on the border of the Rosedale and University neighborhoods, this summer.

Co-owners Patrick Crawford and Charlie Berger also have a Denver Beer Co. production and canning facility called Canworks in

Denver’s Sunnyside neighborhood at 4455 Jason St. The fermentation stage of the beer-brewing process naturally produces carbon dioxide, and Berger estimates that Denver Beer Co. can capture about 150,000 pounds of CO2 per year with Earthly Labs’ technology.

All of the CO2 that is not sent to the cannabis industry will be reused by the brewery, Berger said.

“Something near-and-dear to our hearts as Coloradans is taking care of our environment,” Berger said. For Denver Beer Co., the pilot program is a way to give back to their communities, he said. “Capturing and reusing CO2 is an extension of our efforts to be as sustainable as possible.”

Berger added that Denver Beer Co.’s other sustainability efforts include using 98% locallygrown malted barley and powering Canworks by solar.

The Clinic’s director of operations Brian Cusworth said CO2 is required for plant growth, so another way the pilot program partnership will contribute to reducing The Clinic’s carbon footprint is by eliminating the need to purchase carbon dioxide from power plants and shipping it across the state.

Canworks, where the CO2 will be captured, is only about seven or eight miles away from The Clinic’s cultivation center where the CO2 will be delivered.

The Clinic has four marijuana retail locations across the metro area — Denver’s University Hills, South Park Hill and West Highland neighborhoods; and one location in Wheat Ridge — two Denver-based cultivation centers and a lab.

“We’ve always put innovation as a top priority of ours, right alongside sustainability,” Cusworth said.

Cusworth added he hopes the pilot program will bring awareness to Earthly Labs’ technology for small businesses, and that an industry partnership is an option for any brewery and any legal indoor marijuana cultivation business.

“That’s what it’s really all about,” Cusworth said, “taking larger steps toward responsibility and fighting climate change in the communities that support us.”

The first batch of CO2 was captured from Denver Beer Co. on Jan. 20 and distributed to The Clinic in early February. Testing for quality and various environmentals, specific to the pilot program but taking place concurrently with standard state-mandated testing, will take place for 16 weeks, which is the life cycle of a marijuana plant, Cusworth said.

Both Cusworth and Berger said a partnership between a craft brewery and a marijuana cultivation business, combined with using a small company’s technology, to result in reducing carbon emissions makes sense especially in Colorado. They pointed to the state’s thriving craft brewery culture and the fact that the rest of the nation is looking at Colorado as the pioneers of the legal marijuana industry. This is in addition to Coloradans’ general appreciation for the outdoors, Cusworth and Berger said.

While Earthly Labs’ technology is being used in a small number of craft breweries across the nation, Colorado’s pilot program is the first of its kind to form a partnership between a brewery and cannabis cultivation to help reduce both industries’ carbon footprint.

“This program is a little ahead of its time,” Urso said. She added that assuming all works as it is predicted to, her hope is for the program to expand. “We could really move the needle in helping the state meet its greenhouse gas reduction goals.”

A life dedicated to academics and literature University of Denver to host literary conference in honor of former professor

In his book, “Stoner,” the late John Williams takes a mundane story and turns it into a remarkable tale about one man’s life.

The latter, said Sally Stich, who is coordinating an upcoming literary conference about Williams, is “because of his style of writing.”

Being offered as a University of Denver Enrichment Program, the conference is called The Undeniable Genius of John Williams: “Stoner” and the Man Who Wrote the Perfect Novel. It takes place on March 28 and will offer a day of sessions focused on Williams’ “Stoner,” as well as his career as both an author and a professor at DU. “That’s what his focus really was in life — his academics and his writing,” said Jonathan Williams of Thornton, one of the author’s three children. He plans on attending the event and added that his father is “well-deserving” of a literary event in his honor.

Williams was born in Texas in 1922 and grew up poor. He eventually came to Colorado to study at DU, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949 and a Master of Arts degree in 1950. Williams became a professor at DU by the mid-1950s — a position he held for more than 30 years — and is known for helping to develop, and eventually direct, the creative writing program in the university’s English department.

But as serious as he was about academics, Williams was just as serious about his writing, said Alan Prendergast, senior contributor at the Westword, who wrote a biographical article on Williams about 10 years ago.

Prendergast will be delivering a keynote address at the conference.

Williams had two volumes of poetry and four novels published. Despite his 1973 “Augustus” winning a National Book Award that year, “‘Stoner’ is the one that amazes people the most,” Prendergast said.

“Stoner” was published in 1965. It is a fictional story about a man named William Stoner, who was born near the end of the nineteenth century and grew up poor on a farm in Missouri. He learned of famous authors by visiting the library, and when he was sent to study agriculture at the Uni-

“Stoner” has a universal message, Prendergast said, in that “it is about life. It describes the consolation of loving literature when life is bleak.”

ergast said. But “so much of that has changed since then,” he added.

“Stoner” went out of print in 1966. It was rediscovered in the 1980s, but still went largely unnoticed even after Williams’ death in 1994, Stich said.

It wasn’t until the early 2000s when a French author read “Stoner” and urged her publisher to buy the international rights to it, Stich said. And by the 2010s, it began to catch on in the U.S. and gained popularity largely through “word-of-mouth” and liter-

ary reviews, Stitch said.

The literary conference at DU is coinciding with the 55th anniversary of “Stoner” being published.

The conference isn’t “just to celebrate someone who taught at DU,” said Stich, a DU alumna. “There is something greater than Denver in John Williams. (But) there is a logical connection to one of our own who has never had a literary conference devoted to him.”

Mayor names director of Denver’s first climate agency Grace Rink to lead Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency Staff report A leader in the sustainability field with nearly two decades of experience working on climate issues will lead Denver’s first climate agency.

Grace Rink was appointed by Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock as executive director of the new Office of Climate Ac-

tion, Sustainability and Resiliency. She will begin her role as chief climate officer on March 16.

“Climate change represents the greatest environmental challenge to our planet, and while leadership at the federal level is lacking, states and cities are moving to take action,” Hancock said in a news release.

“Denver is taking a major step forward with this new office and Grace’s leadership. I also want to acknowledge city council president Jolon Clark’s passion for this work, and his efforts to push Denver into the forefront of those cities that are addressing climate strategies at the local level.”

Study shows only half of the U.S. is recreating outside 1 billion fewer outings in 2018 than 10 years ago

A new study reports that half of the U.S. population participated in outdoor recreation at least once in 2018.

“When you first see this number it seems really impressive,” said Lise Aangeenbrug, executive director of the Outdoor Foundation. “Fifty percent of Americans report that they get outside. That’s a large number. That’s a lot of people.”

But Aangeenbrug said what that really means is that 50% say they don’t go outside even once per year.

“They don’t hike with their family,” she said. “They don’t go for a run on a neighborhood trail. They’re not getting out with their kids on a bike. They’re not going to the ski slopes.”

The 2019 Outdoor Participation Report released by Outdoor Foundation, the charitable arm of the Outdoor Industry Foundation, surveyed 20,000 adults and children throughout the country to determine what factors contribute to their time spent outdoors.

The study found that Americans went on 1 billion fewer outings in 2018 than they did 10 years ago, when the survey began. Also, only 17.9% of the total population recreated outside at least once a week. Overall outdoor outings declined by an average of 7.4 outings per participant over the past year.

One aspect of the study Aangeenbrug was particularly concerned about was the decline of kids getting outside. In 2018, kids reported 15% fewer outings than in 2012.

“This is particularly disturbing for the future because we also know that adults are two to three times more likely to go outside if they were taken outside as children,” Aangeenbrug said.

While the overall picture for outdoor participation was not promising, there were some bright spots.

Female participation rates increased by an average of 3.2%. Hispanic participation growth was the strongest among ethnic groups over the past year. And from 20172018, there were participation surges in some individual activities, such as BMX biking and sailing.

When it comes to proximity, the study found that 63% of the people who recreate outside do so within 10 miles of their home.

Youth outdoor participants under age 18 preferred to recreate less than one mile from their homes.

Aangeenbrug said that reinforces the notion that when it comes to getting people outside, “it needs to be easy to get to, safe to get to, welcoming and close to home.”

During the Outdoor Retailer Snow Show that took place in Denver in January, a panel discussed the findings of the study and the need for a movement to get Americans outside.

“The report confirms what a lot of us know already, which is that most Americans aren’t getting outside regularly and an enormous number aren’t getting outside at all,” said Aaron Reuben, researcher at Duke University and moderator of the panel. “So as a researcher, I think about that from a public heath lens. We know our population is aging, it’s urbanizing. We’re seeing greater rates of diabetes and obesity and mental health con-

ditions like anxiety and depression.”

The most popular outdoor activities among participants was running, jogging and trail running with 19.2% choosing these activities.

Following that was freshwater, saltwater and fly fishing at number two; and road biking, mountain biking and BMX at number three.

The top five activities were rounded out by hiking; then car, backyard, backpacking and RV camping.

“I think we have to be careful as an industry to not tell people they’re doing it wrong,” said Ben Steele, executive vice president and chief customer officer at REI, who served as one of the three panelists.

“At REI we get that wrong a lot,” Steele said. “I run every morning. That’s my favorite thing to do. To REI historically, I’m doing it wrong. That’s not time outdoors because I’m not on a trail.”

Steele said it’s OK to start small. And that realistically, all they’re asking people —especially kids — to do is to go have fun outside.

The toolkit is designed for Colorado companies interested in improving the health and well-being of their employees.

The Get Outdoors Employer Toolkit promotes a healthier Colorado workforce through the creation of a health and business-focused wellness assessment and collection of free local resources for businesses. After completing the assessment, participants will receive a set of recommendations on ways their company can improve its health and wellness programs.

The toolkit, created in partnership with the Center for Health, Work & Environment at the Colorado School of Public Health, is designed to integrate and promote

sustainable nature experiences and outdoor recreation through workplace initiatives, and enhance the health and well-being of diverse workforces.

“In 2018, our office compiled the Colorado Outdoor RX report that detailed the value of engaging with the outdoors and the devastating impacts associated with current trends of spending more time inside,” said Nathan Fey, director of the Outdoor Recreation Industry Office. “This health toolkit is a vital component to collect and share the insights and best practices that help employers reverse the indoor migration trend and help cultivate a more active and engaged workforce.”

ithin a single week, dozens of regulars find their way to the 2300 block of Arapahoe and Curtis streets: Steven Barth, a jazz keyboard player, leaves the shelter he’s been staying at for eight months, headed to a weekly dance group at the St. Francis Center, a daytime shelter on Curtis Street.

Ashley Anderson and Paul Laurendine, a married couple who met at the day shelter, also make their way to Curtis Street each week, drawn to the dance group where they first bonded.

Richard Beck, an artist who goes by the name Gonzo, walks from his Denver home to the RedLine Contemporary Art Center on Arapahoe Street — where, having once slept behind the building each night, he has since accepted a position as studio coordinator.

Every week, these individuals are drawn to the arts programs that happen to run in the back-to-back buildings. On Tuesday and Saturday afternoons, RedLine invites aspiring artists to the Reach Studio at 2350 Arapahoe St. And on Thursday mornings, ballet company Wonderbound holds a dance group at the St. Francis Center, 2323 Curtis St. The Denver arts groups, which each began within the last decade, seek to serve the homeless in the metro area. “We’ve been coming to this for years. It’s been our getaway,” Anderson said of her and her husband.

Participants also say that programs like these are few and far between.

“I wish it would last longer. There’s not much else to do,” said Barth, who often sits on the edge of the dancefloor in the St. Francis Center’s clothing room, using drumsticks to keep the beat while others are dancing.

“It feels good to move,” he said. “It makes your heart beat.”

Programs’ purposes While the programs seek to achieve a common goal, each one approaches that goal differently.

The Pari Passu dance program — named after the Latin term for “equal step” — specifically engages those served by the St. Francis Center. Every Thursday, participants decide how to spend the hour, whether that means dancing together or simply discussing music, said group coordinator Heather Sutton.

“This is a population that is told a lot what they can and can’t do, so we try to meet whatever the demand is that day,” Sutton said. “One of the first things people lose when they’re experiencing financial hardship is access to the arts. It’s important for us to provide that.”

Directly after the hour wraps up at the center, Sutton holds another group at the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, 2111 Champa St. Sutton also coordinates for group members to occasionally watch Wonderbound dance rehearsals or attend local shows.

Pari Passu participant Debra Ann added that for her, the program is more than a chance to enjoy the arts; it’s also an opportunity to encourage those who are facing the same hardships that she is.

“I like to lift people up. Instead of sitting out there alone, we can come here and have fellowship,” said Debra Ann, who asked that her last name not be used for privacy reasons. “No matter what you’re going through, music’s good for your soul.”

Meanwhile, through its Reach Studio program, RedLine invites any artist to visit the studio and access the program’s workspace, storage space and materials.

Reach Studio also provides “professional development and opportunities to sell artwork,” said JC Futrell, RedLine’s education director.

Participants’ work is featured in permanent exhibitions at RedLine and Saint John’s Cathedral at 1350 N. Washington St., he said. The studio’s core artists, who have regularly participated for six months, receive additional benefits including access to scholarships for the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design.

“This studio really means connection and it really means safety,” Futrell said. “I’ve got artists who tell me that before coming in here, they didn’t really see themselves as artists, and now they do.”

That’s been the case for Reach Studio coordinator Gonzo, who first came to the studio about a decade ago, hoping to leave behind a life of financial hardship and crime, he said.

“I came into this building trying not to be anybody anymore. The minute I’d leave here, there’d be drugs, people who were ad-

Since joining the studio, he has accepted the coordinator position, sold numerous pieces and found stable housing, he said.

He attributes the turnaround to his pursuit of an art career and says that, for many others, he’s seen the same transformation take place.

“I’ve created a whole new person,” he said. “I don’t do the things I used to do, and that’s what makes life worth living.”

‘It saves your life’ Though many of the artists live within walking distance of the studio, some have a longer commute, coming in from the surrounding suburbs.

“We get artists from Arvada, Wheat Ridge, Englewood, Thornton — they come from all over to be in this space,” Futrell said.

Artist Patti Kurtzman commutes to the studio from her home in Golden, connected to the program by her passion for art and her brother’s past homelessness, she said.

Juannean Young, who left her job about two years ago to become an artist, drives to RedLine every week from Aurora, where she recently moved into a shared-living home.

Young and many of her fellow artists said that through the studio’s sales and connections, they feel they have started to make names for themselves in the art world.

Vanessa Constanti is one artist who’s found this success. In the past, the artist faced housing insecurity; she has since found stable housing, but she continues to visit the studio as she cares for her daughter, who has significant special needs, Constanti said.

In addition to selling artwork and being a part of exhibitions, the program provides something even more important, she said.

“When you’re dealing with special needs or housing insecurity, you’re never selfactualizing. You’re mired in just surviving,” she said. “This is the first time I’ve been able to have an outlet for my art. I think most of us will use the same terms: It saves your life.”

Nonprofit Art from Ashes also provides arts programming, with Wednesday classes specifically geared toward people ages nine to 24. The free program runs Wednesdays from four to six p.m.

The class invites youth to drop in and create artwork and poetry based on a daily theme, share their work with peers and hear from guest artists.

“Most of the youth are coming from some sort of disadvantaged lifestyle, and we’ve had a lot of kids experiencing homelessness,” said Sarah Lanzarotta, program director and facilitator. “They connect in an amazing way just from listening to each other.”

The nonprofit’s goal is for all who at-

tend to recognize they have the power to change their story, she said.

“A lot of people feel they have made so many mistakes and can’t get away from that,” she said. “But through the power of expression, our hope is they take with them, `I can write a different story.’”

Art from Ashes also partners with local treatment centers and schools, bringing its arts activities to young people across the metro area.

Lanzarotta encouraged organizations to contact the nonprofit at its website, artfromashes.org/about/contact-art-fromashes, to arrange a visit.

“We can work with schools with grants for development, art, prevention — We can go anywhere as long as there are kids there,” she said. “We want to reach more youth and give them an outlet.”

Tour celebrates women securing right to vote Colorado Humanities presents portrayal of Jeannette Rankin

St. Patrick’s Day Parade coming to Denver for 58th time First responders, police, firefighters to be honored in traditional event Staff report Celebrate the luck of the Irish and honor police officers, firefighters and first responders at the 58th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Denver.

The 2020 parade charity is Shield616, which was founded to provide armor to

protect peace officers and first responders from rifle fire.

The parade will fill the streets of downtown Denver, rain or shine, on Saturday, March 14. Beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the corner and 19th and Wynkoop, the parade turns left on 17th Street to Blake, then east to 27th, where it will finish in the Coors Field parking lot.

Colorado native Aristea Brady will serve as this year’s grand marshal. Brady has won multple Emmy awards for a broad range of stories, including breaking news, in-depth enterprise reports and health news.

Born and raised in Greenwood Village, she has a large extended family that operates a sheep and cattle ranch in Craig on the Western Slope. She recognizes the contributions the Irish have made to Colorado and has celebrated her Irish heritage by attending the parade for years.

The 2020 Queen Colleen is Madison Dorenkamp, Miss Colorado USA 2019.

Dorenkamp, a Colorado native, grew up in Southeastern Colorado on her family ranch. She won the title of Miss Colorado USA in 2019.

Last year, an estimated 400,000 attended the parade. This year’s parade includes

more than 10,000 marchers and 200 entrants including pipe bands, step dancers, floats, police, fire and emergency service agencies, military members, equestrians, charities, marching bands, businesses and our city’s dignitaries.

Some Democrats fear fallout from Sanders atop ticket Members of Congress worry that blue gains could see setback

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ robust start in the race for the presidential nomination is triggering alarm among congressional Democrats, with many warning that a ticket headed by the self-declared socialist could be devastating to the party’s chances of winning the Senate and holding the House in November.

In anxious huddles around the Capitol, apprehensive Democrats are sharing their worries that Sanders’ socialist label and unyielding embrace of controversial proposals like “Medicare for All” and the Green New Deal will repel voters in the affluent, moderate districts that flipped House control in 2018 and in closely divided states where Republican senators are vulnerable.

The Vermont independent narrowly won New Hampshire on Feb. 11 on the heels of a strong showing in Iowa and is widely seen as a front-runner, along with former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

“I’m a proud capitalist,” said freshman Rep. Ben McAdams, D-Utah, in pointed contrast with Sanders.

McAdams, who is supporting former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and whose Salt Lake City district will be among the toughest for Democrats to defend, said having a liberal like Sanders atop his party’s ticket “would probably give me more opportunities to show my independence” from the party.

Another freshman from a competitive district, Rep. Tom Malinowski, D-New Jersey, said Democrats need a presidential nominee who “doesn’t scare all those future former Republicans more than Trump scares them.” And while acknowledging that Republicans plan to tar all Democrats with the socialist label, “There’s one candidate for whom that would not be a lie.”

Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nevada, who backs the candidacy of former Vice President Joe Biden, warned a group of Democratic voters this week in Carson City, Nevada, that with Sanders atop the ticket, “you’re not going to take back the Senate. There’s not any way, because everybody’s going to be tarred with the same brush. We will probably lose seats in the House.”

One House Democrat said colleagues from swing districts are scared by the prospects of a Sanders nomination, while another said moderates are increasingly concerned that a Sanders candidacy would devastate their prospects for winning the White House and retaining the House. The lawmakers insisted on anonymity to describe private conversations.

Democrats’ jitters have Republicans rubbing their hands in delight.

“It’s every Republican’s dream come true,” Rep. Tom Cole, R-Oklahoma, a former leader of the House GOP’s campaign committee, said of a possible Sanders nomination.

Republicans face an uphill fight in capturing control of the House, which Democrats lead 232-197, with one independent and five vacancies. The GOP controls the Senate 53-47 and is favored to retain its majority.

Biden supporters are happy to use apprehension about Sanders’ impact on the party’s strength in Congress as a tool for drumming up support.

Rep. Ami Bera, D-Calif., who’s endorsed Biden, said if Sanders were nominated, Democrats from moderate districts “might actually have to run away from our nominee to get elected.” And he added, “It’s highly unlikely that Bernie Sanders will moderate his views, either.”

Congressional Democrats have little to gain by openly disparaging the man who could well be their presidential nominee, and they say they’re uncertain what they could do that would be effective. Any move to derail his candidacy that could be traced back to them would undoubtedly enrage Sanders and his impassioned supporters and risk the fury that split the party in

Underscoring a reluctance to speak critically of Sanders, Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Illinois, chairwoman of House Democrats’ campaign arm, sidestepped questions about how his nomination would affect her candidates’ prospects. “We have a long way to go before we know who our nominee is,” she said.

Asked how many nervous lawmakers have expressed their worries about Sanders to her, Bustos paused for four seconds before answering, “We have discussions about the nominee but, you know, it runs the gamut.”

While many Democrats are reluctant to openly express dismay about Sanders, members of the House have spoken with their feet.

According to the website fivethirtyeight. com, Sanders has endorsements from only seven House members, all members of the progressive caucus from safely Democratic districts. Biden, in contrast, has backing from 41 House members, and has made a point of touting support from seven lawmakers from swing districts. Bloomberg, who hopes to poach Biden’s position as the moderate alternative to Sanders, has racked up 11 endorsements from House lawmakers, five of whom occupy swing seats.

Progressives dispute concerns Progressives argue the fears are overblown. Republicans tried to tie Democrats to socialism and liberal causes like Medicare for All during the 2018 campaign, they note, yet Democrats won a resounding majority in the House. And they argue that nominating Sanders could change the electorate in ways that help the party.

“They don’t want somebody that sells

out,” said Sanders backer Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Michigan, a member of the “squad” of young liberal freshmen. She added, “Please don’t talk about only persuading Trumpers and independents” to be open to an alternative candidate. “How about persuading the Democrats that haven’t been engaged?”

“The single most important thing for Democrats to take back the Senate is turnout,” said Mike Lux, a liberal strategist who supports Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren in the presidential race. “We have to have a highly energized Democratic base turnout, a lot of young people coming out, voting not just in the presidential race but further down the ballot.”

Yet Sanders’ agenda is far from shared.

Several top-tier Democratic Senate recruits, such as former astronaut Mark Kelly in Arizona, former state Sen. Cal Cunningham in North Carolina and former Gov. John Hickenlooper in Colorado, have explicitly distanced themselves from core Sanders positions like Medicare for All. Hickenlooper, the likely Democratic nominee against Republican Sen. Cory Gardner, targeted Sanders during his own brief bid for the party’s presidential nomination last year. At a Democratic debate last summer, Hickenlooper warned that Sanders’ program would be “a disaster” at the ballot box.

“If you force Americans to make these radical changes,” Hickenlooper said, “they’re not going to go along.”

Gardner, widely considered the most endangered Republican senator, has been openly pining for Sanders to be the nominee. “In 2018, Cory said `the most dangerous thing to happen in America in the 2016 presidential election was Bernie Sanders’ normalization of socialism,’” Gardner campaign spokesman Jerrod Dobkin said. “Two years later, Cory’s been proven right.”

Democrats skeptical of Sanders stressed that the nominating process has just begun.

Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama, who is considered the most endangered Democratic Senate incumbent this year, has endorsed Biden, a longtime friend. He said he wouldn’t play “what-if games” about the top of the ticket and how it might affect his chances in deep-red Alabama.

“I still think that Biden is going to be the nominee,” Jones said. “I still think that moderate voice that’s out there is going to ultimately carry.”

Rocky Mountain Train Show returns to Denver Families, enthusiasts invited to event stretching over two days Staff report The largest train show west of the Mississippi chugs into Denver in March as a treat for families and train enthusiasts. Presented by the Rocky Mountain Division of the Train Collectors Association, the Rocky Mountain Train Show is larger than ever, now covering more than three acres.

The two-day show will feature more than 20 operating train layouts of different scales and sizes, manufacturer and hobby store displays, facepainting for children and more than 600 tables of vendors selling trains, books, paints, scenery material and everything you might need to set up your own spectacular model train.

This show also will feature how-to clinics, Thomas the Tank Engine displays, a free train ride for kids, lots of Legos and door prizes with family fun for all. Union Pacific Heritage Operations senior manager Ed Dickens will give a presentation on the Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy steam locomotive.

The Rocky Mountain Train Show partners with several nonprofits in Colorado each year. This year, children from Big Brothers Big Sisters, Children’s Hospital, Kenzi’s Causes, the Kempe Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs and several other nonprofits will get to attend the show for free.

The Rocky Mountain Train Show is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 7 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

March 8 at the Denver Mart, I-25 and 58th Avenue. Parking is free.

Admission is $10 for adults. Children younger than 12, Boy and Girl Scouts in uniform and active military personnel with ID are admitted free.
