Paradise Cove

Ashleigh Hollowell Teller County, Colorado, the 22nd most populous county in the state and 559 square miles of scenic views, well-known hikes, family owned businesses, and fresh air. Teller County was founded in 1899 and has been a notable area for recreation and outdoor landmarks ever since. Though, notable for those things, there are many extraordinary recreation spots and outdoor landmarks that are not as well known to the public.

Paradise Cove, also known as Guffey Cove, is a natural, deep, waterfall-fed pool surrounded by canyon like walls of smooth sandstone and granite cliffs. Over thousands of years, the pool was carved from a once towering waterfall. For many years, Paradise Cove was unmarked on any map and only recently became popular in the past few years mainly by word of mouth.

Before that, only a few outdoor enthusiasts knew of the natural treasure. During summers, the cove is a popular summer recreational area for cliff jumping and swimming. Located 27.1 miles from Woodland Park, an approximate 40 minute drive, Paradise Cove offers a secluded nature experience, a scenic ½ mile hike to the swimming hole, and multiple cliff jumping spots for the brave-of-heart.

Not well known to many, but inundated with picturesque views and coincidentally one of Woodland Park Mayor, Dave Turley’s favorite outdoor treasures are the Pancake Rocks. “It seems that many people do not know much about Pancake Rocks. I find that to be one of

Highway System 8,479 state highway bridges. The High Span Bridge in Victor, also known as the Arequa Gulch Bridge, stretches 250 feet tall and 1,218 feet long. It was built in 2000-2001 as

part of a highway realignment project to accommodate expansion of the Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Company’s valley fill facility. Completion of the bridge took only eleven months and included a pull out area that overlooks distant mountain ranges that expand for approximately 40 miles. The High Span Bridge is also on a list of interesting areas and things to do in Teller County, recommended by Sue Griswold, Executive Assistant and Membership Director of the Greater Woodland Park Chamber of Commerce.

Already home to so many treasures, Teller County’s South Highway 67 from Divide to Cripple Creek was recently named an official Prisoner of War (POW) and Missing in Action (MIA) highway in dedication to those who have served and sacrificed unimaginable things for the freedom of the United States. “Dying for freedom isn’t the worst that could happen, being forgotten is,” Susie Stephens-Harvey, President of the Georgia Committee for

POW/MIA Inc.’s famous quote was behind the very idea that sparked the Rally Committee and local Veteran’s group to push for the dedication. The groups had worked for years to rename Highway 67 to honor the POW and MIA veterans and finally succeeded in 2013 when the Colorado State Senate officially approved bill SJR13033 to designate the highway as such. The portion of Highway 67 dedicated is lined with miles of striking mountain and forest views that offer a natural, cinematic memorial to the veterans and a peaceful, reminiscent drive for citizens and visitors of Teller County.

Walk in the footsteps of miners on Vindicator Valley Trail The two-mile loop Vindicator Valley Trail is one of the most popular of the Trails of Gold that take hikers through mining country between Victor and Cripple Creek. The easy trail (there is one steep part) takes hikers along the routes used by miners working in several of Victor’s mines, including the Theresa and Vindicator mines. The trail also goes through what is left of the town of Independence.

Other Trails of Gold include the Gold Camp Trail to Poverty Gulch, Little Grouse Mountain Trail and Battle Mountain Trail.

Walking through local mining history offers fun for the entire family but do stay on marked trails in this active mining country for safety. The trails are managed and maintained by the Southern Teller County Focus Group in partnership with the Cripple Creek-Victor Gold Mining Co. Hike into history on Horsethief Falls In the late 1890s and the early 20th century, Cripple Creek’s goldfields drew an assortment of people from all over the world, some honest and some not so much: prospectors, miners, school teachers, bankers, swindlers and, of course, horse thieves.

The town of Cripple Creek celebrates its colorful past in it many museums but hikers can also follow in

the tracks of the horse thieves at Horsethief Falls Trail and Horsethief Park where horse thieves hid out from the law.

This 2.6-mile trail starts and ends at a closed tunnel on Colo. 67, 9 miles south of Divide. The trailhead isn’t marked but it’s easy to find. The first half mile is considered a moderate hike but the rest of the trail is easy.

Those interested in a longer and more strenuous hike can use Horsethief Falls Trail to connect with the Ring

the Peak Trail around the summit of Pikes Peak or to Pancake Rocks.

Horsethief is open year round. Winter snow might make it suitable for snowshoeing but spring runoff can make hiking a wet proposition. Many hikers like the trail best in late summer and early fall. The shaded woods along the trail are also great places to find edible mushrooms, including the choice Boletus edulis.

Handicap accessible trails Mueller State Park has more than 50 miles of trails; some are open only to hikers while others allow both hikers and cyclists. Some of the longer loop trails are also suitable for equestrians.

Parts of some trails are flat enough for small children and people using wheelchairs but the Dragonfly trail was designed with these two groups of visitors in mind.

The trail takes a short loop around a pond and includes interpretive signs to show visitors exactly what they are seeing. Even the parking area is equipped with these signs.

The park’s visitor center and many of its picnic and camping areas are also handicap accessible.

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument also has a trail specifically designed with handicap access. The half-mile Ponderosa Loop trail starts and ends at the monument’s new state-of-the-art visitor center, which is also handicap accessible and has hands-on displays suitable for the blind as well as Brail signage.

The one-mile Petrified Forest Trail is also barrierfree enough for people with certain disabilities and to make the hikes easier the monument also has motorized trail-accessible wheel chairs with balloon tires.

These wheelchairs are available without charge.

Angela Dingwell From June through September, the intersection of Henrietta Ave. and Center St. is a bustling place on Friday mornings in downtown Woodland Park. Starting around 5 am, the local vendors are scrambling to set up tents in the dark. They have roughly two hours to prepare for the three thousand-plus visitors who will descend upon the market later in the morning. They rush to unload vegetables, artisanal cheeses, baked goods, fresh herbs, fruits, handcrafted soaps and lotions, jellies and jams, plants and more. Naturally, there are a few stolen moments to greet the other vendors who have become friends over the years.

Arms are thrown up in greetings, hugs are exchanged and sometimes a hand is lent to assist latecomers. Once the booths are ‘customer-ready’, it’s time to grab a quick cup of coffee at the Market Manager’s Booth before the sales begin.

The first of the early-bird locals arrive even before 7am prepared to speed shop for their weekly produce and other items before heading into work. They carry shopping bags, a shopping list and knowledge of where to find their favorite booths - hoping to get the ‘pick of the crop’ just as the market opens. By nine, the crowd thickens with families, couples, well-behaved canines and individuals who have a desire to shop local,

eat healthy and enjoy the neighborhood atmosphere that only a farmers’ market can provide.

The Teller County Farmers Market Association (TCFMA), formed in 1990, is operated by volunteers and administered by a Board of Directors. It is co-sponsored by the CSU Extension Service and the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union. The TCFMA mission is to enhance the quality of life for Teller County residents and visitors by providing access to safe and affordable produce and other food, promoting agricultural land use through a direct market for growers, encouraging organic and pesticide-free growing techniques, and fostering health and well-being through community education.

The items for sale have either been grown locally or produced from local Colorado products. Market Managers, Judy Crummett, Earlyn Cowman, and Jane Enger are proud to be able to say that some of the vendors have been with the market since the summer of 1991, the first year of the Woodland Park Farmers’ Market. While the market has changed locations several times over the past 24 years, the commitment to serving their mission has remained the same. The market was voted Colorado’s Favorite Large Farmers Market in 2011.

In the first decade or two, word of the market spread from neighbor to neighbor,

along with newspaper articles which promoted their success. Those still hold true, but the Internet has become an integral part of market publicity. Today, Facebook is the most popular way to get up-to-date information on which of their favorite vendors will be at the market each week, what new produce is in season, and other special events such as musicians, visiting zoo animals, and so many other activities, it would be impossible to mention them all. TOP FISHING SPOTS

Norma Engelberg Thousands of people visit Teller County and hundreds have moved to the area for just one thing - fishing. Teller County is located within less than an hour’s drive from some of the best fly and still-water fishing in Colorado.

As for the area’s top 5 fishing sites, ask local fly-shop owners and outfitters where the best fishing is available and the first thing they’ll say is “the South Platte River.” Numbers one, two and three for first-class fly fishing are Eleven Mile Canyon, Cheesman Canyon and Deckers.

Eleven Mile Canyon Recreation Area is managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Pike & San Isabel National Forest South Park Ranger District. The canyon is located below Eleven Mile Canyon Reservoir in the southeast corner of South Park in Park County near Lake George.

Not only noted for its fly-fishing opportunities, the canyon is well-known for its natural beauty and its many outdoor activities - hiking, camping, outdoor photography, wildlife watching and picnicking. Taking the narrow road through the canyon is a drive through history. The road was built on the old Colorado Midland Railway bed and runs through several old railroad tunnels.

Cheesman Canyon is also part of the Pike National Forest but is located about

5 miles southwest of Deckers in Jefferson and Douglas counties. It’s managed by the South Platte Ranger District. The upper and lower canyon is a natural fishery for both brown and rainbow trout, which breed in its cool, clear waters.

Cheesman Canyon is open to anglers year round; periodic releases of water from Cheesman Reservoir keep river temperatures just where the trout like them even during the hottest part of summer and the river typically remains ice free through the winter, as well.

Deckers is often mentioned in the same sentence with Cheesman Canyon but it is a popular fishing site in its own right. The South Platte River takes a bend at unincorporated Deckers in Douglas County.

Lower and warmer than other areas along the river, it isn’t unusual to see anglers flyfishing at Deckers at the height of winter and through the summer.

Number four is the Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area. It is the “Dream Stream” portion of the Spinney Mountain State Wildlife Area and was recently dedicated to long-time Denver Post sports writer Charlie Meyers. This wildlife area is part of the South Park National Heritage Area and is located between Spinney Mountain and Eleven Mile state parks. The area, located 3 miles south of Hartsel in Park County is noted for fly fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing.

Number five is actually three still-water fishing sites: Eleven Mile Canyon Reservoir, Spinney Reservoir and Antero Reservoir, all located in Park County.

Eleven Mile Canyon Reservoir is located in Eleven Mile State Park and is open year round. Anglers fish from the shore and from small boats in the summer and on the ice in winter. Camping is available around the reservoir and other activities include hiking, guided interpretive nature walks and picnicking.

Spinney Reservoir is located at Spinney Mountain State Park. It offers Gold Medal trout fishing as well as opportunities for boating and birding. The park is usually open from mid-April to mid-November.

State park fees apply at both of these reservoirs. For more information about fees and mandatory boat inspections to stop the spread of invasive quagga and zebra mussels, visit http://wildlife.state.co.us/.

Antero Reservoir is owned by Denver Water and fishing is fee-free. The reservoir is warmer than other reservoirs located at the same elevation, making for fast-growing fish. For more information, visit http:// www.denverwater.org/Recreation/Antero/.

Earning honorable mention among local anglers are North and South Catamount reservoirs and Crystal Creek Reservoir on Pikes Peak and Skagway Reservoir near Victor.

VEHICLE PARADISE Pat Hill phill@coloradocommunitynews.com For thrills and the sought-after adrenaline rush, riding the trails in an off-highway vehicle spotlights the beauty as well as the beckoning sense of adventure inherent in the land of Pikes Peak.

“There is an economic engine right in our back door,” said Bill Alspach, one of Woodland Park’s greatest outdoor enthusiasts who cycles, hikes, skis, climbs mountains and rides a dirt bike on off-highway trails.

Alspach’s ride on a dirt bike from Mexico to Canada via the Continental Divide with five companions was featured in an article in the “Overland Journal” last fall.

According to a report by the Louis Berger Group, the state of Colorado reaped $945 million in total gross sales due to motorized recreation in 2012-13. As a result, motorized recreation fueled 5,495 jobs directly related to the sport and 3,372 additional jobs as an indirect result.

In Woodland Park, it’s an economic stampede, perhaps unknown to the uninitiated.

“Stand at the intersection of Colo. 67 and U.S. 24 and count one car per minute with an OHV attached,” Alspach said. “This is a pretty big recreational spot on any given week.”

For locals and tourists alike, the Pikes Peak Ranger District is an OHV paradise, with trails east, north and west of Woodland Park. “No other Front Range town has this many trails,” Alspach said.

For newbies to the sport, Alspach has some words of advice. “Take the time to learn the machine and don’t get in over your head,” he said. “Hook up with a reputable dealer; there are three here in Woodland Park.”

Dan and Becky Duncan offer a place for advice and chitchat at their shop Big D Motorsports which sells a variety of ATVs, including the Arctic Cat and the Husqvarna.

At Big D Motorsports Dan Duncan provides a hangout as well as a supply station for OHVers. “I’m known for maintaining that small-town attitude,” Duncan said. “Even if they’re not here to buy stuff, I want to help them find a trail, make sure they’re safe and legal.

Those are big issues for us.”

the people we want to keep the trails open for. And that takes responsibility on everybody’s part.”

In a region vulnerable to catastrophic fires, responsible riding includes having a spark arrester. “People don’t know, so we’re here to educate,” Duncan said.

“Without a spark arrester people can get a nasty ticket.

With all the fires, people are kind of sensitive around here.”

Big D’s specialty vehicle is the Arctic Cat, the oldest continuously-produced motorcycle in the world.

After 21 years in business, Jeff Book at Pikes Peak Polaris is reaping the rewards from the recent craze over off-highway vehicles. “When I started out I didn’t know a lot about the off-road world because I was a snowmobiler,” said Book, who gave up doing automotive repair and selling sporting goods to concentrate on OHVs, gear and repair. “The timing was perfect. Since I got in, the off-highway world has just exploded.”

There’s a good reason for the explosion. “Off-road vehicles have allowed a lot of people to get into the back country which they’d never experienced before,” Book said.

For the reluctant rider, the two-seaters and the sideby-side have opened doors previously closed.

Like Duncan, Book is a stickler for trail law. “People abuse the rules, don’t stay on the trails and that’s what gets these trails closed,” Book said. “People have got to obey the laws or the government will just keep closing more – and once they close, you never get it reopened.”

In many ways, the sport is exclusive as the prices are prohibitive, up to $20,000 for some snowmobiles, Book said. “But you can buy an ATV for $6,000 and go have fun, if you don’t have to have the biggest baddest,” Book said.

Book has the corner on the Teller County market for Polaris, the only company in the world that makes the 50-inch side-by-side OHV. “It’s the most popular offhighway vehicle,” he said.

Capitalizing on the OHV frenzy, Paul Schexnayder opened Catamount PowerSports the second week of February. “What makes Woodland Park unique is that we’re close to two trail systems,” he said, referring to the “717” and “770” systems. “To have that length of trails this close to a town the size of Woodland Park is something you’re not going to find anywhere else in the world.”

The “770” system features the Skeleton trail which, along with the “650” trail in the same region, connects to the Rampart OHV area. “So you can get from Rainbow Falls to Sedalia on OHV trails,” Schexnayder said.

“You can also get all the way into Sprucewood, a small town with a couple of ranches and a bar.”

If the two trails aren’t enough, the Rainbow Falls system is an option north of Woodland Park off Colo. 67.

“There is some new single-track in there,” he said. “It’s for dirt bikes only, very difficult, very long.”

The annual motorcycle ice races at Rainbow Falls Mountain Trout are one of the main attractions around Woodland Park, races on the weekends in January and the first two in February. Harry’s Roamer’s Motorcycle Club sponsors the events.

In a place where the direct economic impact of motorized recreation is more than $30 million in state and local business taxes, the sport is an economic multiplier for Woodland Park. “You can come into town to get parts and food, see a movie,” Schexnayder said.

“That makes Woodland Park a great spot for tourists and locals.”

On Aug. 22, the town of Woodland Park is expected to double in size from its current 7,000 when the USA Pro Cycling Challenge sets up camp for the day.

Woodland Park will be the starting point of Stage 5 of the seven-stage event that takes place Aug. 18-24. The Woodland Park stage is expected to begin around 11 a.m. The stage ends in Breckenridge.

Referred to as “America’s Race, the event will cover 600 miles feature 128 elite riders.

The race begins in Aspen and ends at location still to be determined.

Woodland Park had the race pass through the town in 2011 and 2012 and went to great lengths to make sure the event went off without a hitch while in Teller County.

Woodland Park City Manager David Buttery estimates there were as many as 5,500 people lined up along Highway 24 when the race came through town in 2012.

“We really need an array of volunteers to help us as we get closer, and of course, the day of the event,” said local event organizer Mike Perini.

“The days leading up to the race and the day of the race will be a festival atmosphere.”

That festive atmosphere will begin with a concert the night before the race. Race day will be a carnival-like experience with lots of food, beverages and photo opportunities.

According to Perini, the USA Pro Challenge is on a similar level as the Super Bowl, U.S Open and Daytona 500 in terms of the scale of the event. More than one million people are expected to attend the race.

said. “The world is looking at us to see how we do.

“One hundred plus countries will have the event on television so we have to do this right.”

The unique thing about a bike race is that the riders are usually very accessible to the fans and media the day of the race.

The City of Woodland Park is looking to enhance that experience by creating a course through town in which the riders make one to two loops before heading off to Breckenridge.

The fourth stage takes place in Colorado Springs.

Most, if not all riders, according to Perini, will spend that night in Colorado Springs and head up to Woodland Park the day of the race.

“I expect the town to double in size,” Perini said.

By Stage 5 there will likely be some separation between the elite riders and the pack.

“The good thing about Stage 5 is that it’s a good point in the race,” Perini said. “It’s a great position for us. You really see who the leaders are and you can rally around them.”

Perini and his staff are reaching out to the head USA Pro Challenge organizers and asking if it is a possibility to have advanced appearances of team members. More should be known in the coming months.

Tour are staggering. The estimated economic impact for the state is $100 million. In 2011 and 2012, Cycling News voted the event as one of the top five races in the world.

This year’s race will feature two Tour de France champions, three world champions, nine Tour de France stage winners, 26 Olympians and riders from 31 countries.

Planning for this year’s race began in January as Perini assembled a local team of volunteers.

“We have some great men and women who have stepped up to be involved with this world-class event,” Perini said. “We have this up to mirror the USA Pro Challenge statewide.”

The Cripple Creek mining district, originally considered worthless by mining experts, produced an estimated $400,000,000 in gold. At its peak, there were over five hundred mines. When fires in the late 1880s destroyed most the town’s original wood buildings, they were replaced with structures of stone and brick, many of which remain in place.

Built in 1887, this wood frame rural schoolhouse with an L-shaped floor plan received an addition in 1889. Enclosed entry is topped by a bell tower. The tower has a pyramid-shaped roof that includes flared eaves. After the school was closed in 1960, the local Grange purchased the building.

The simple one-story wood frame building sits on a rubble stone foundation. Walls are covered with asphalt siding in a tan brick pattern, and the front gabled roof is steeply pitched. Members of the surrounding community constructed the building in 1911 to be used for dances, fairs, meetings, holiday programs, picnics, and other social events.

It remains in use as a community center.

Adaline Hornbek was one of the early settlers of the region west of Pikes Peak, homesteading the property in 1878. Located within Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, the house is one of the best surviving examples of domestic log architecture in the Rocky Mountain Region. The walls of the 1½-story dwelling are of massive squared logs with Vnotched joints. The steeply pitched gable roof is cedar shingled. The house appears to have been constructed in three stages, with its wings resulting in an irregular floor plan.

The ranch is associated with the early settlement and agricultural development of the Florissant area. The oldest structures date to the 1875 homesteading of the ranch. During the 1875-1945 period, it was part of the farming and ranching heritage along the Twin Creek drainage.

during the early 1920s into an auto toll road known as the Corley Mountain Highway. Referred to as the Gold Camp Road since it was taken over by the US Forest Service in 1939, this scenic route extends into El Paso County. The historic origins of the rail line and the toll road are evident along the route, and it continues to be a popular attraction for local residents and tourists.

The simple two-story wood frame building has a flat roof. The community erected the building in 1899. By 1900, Goldfield was the third largest town in the booming Cripple Creek mining district. The building served as a city hall and fire station until 1940. It is the only remaining public building in what is now virtually a ghost town.

The Independence Mine and Mill is located on the south slope of Battle Mountain at an altitude of approximately 9,780 feet. In 1891, Winfield Scott Stratton made the first major strike of gold in the Cripple Creek/Victor area. The most intensive period of development of the mine coincided with the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act and the restoration of the gold standard of currency. By 1895, it was the premier mine in the area. Stratton, also noted for his civic and charitable contributions, remained active as a leader in the local mining industry until his death in 1902.

The mill, often referred to as the Peck Mill, began operating in 1908 and closed in 1928. The headframe, orehouse, and powderhouse are among the structures and buildings remaining on the site.

The Midland Terminal Railroad was one of three that served this major mining district. The railroad arrived in 1894, and the depot opened for passenger and freight service the following year. The railroad brought ores down to Colorado Springs and Pueblo for processing and sustained the mining community by transporting necessities and luxuries.

The sturdy brick depot contains features common to its type and period of construction including the wide overhanging eaves, the central bay office window, and the large freight doors. Passenger service ended in 1943.

The district contains many relatively unaltered and contiguous commercial, public, fraternal and religious buildings of late 19th and early 20th century design. They form the commercial core of an important mining community that composed part of the Cripple CreekVictor Mining District. The area is one of the richest in gold deposits in the state, and it played a prominent role in the development of Colorado’s mining industry. Downtown Victor still reflects the great wealth and prosperity that resulted from the gold mining operations.

Eliza Marriott Hewlett, an early settler who served as the secretary of the Cascade Town and Improvement Company, built and operated the two-story wood frame boarding house. In operation by 1887, it was a precursor of the larger resort hotels that later dominated the Ute Pass area. It is the only surviving building representing the early railroad period of Cascade’s commercial development as a summer resort for the wealthy.

The Gazebo stands on a small island in the middle of a man-made lake. Designed as a scenic attraction for visitors arriving by train and a complement to a nearby resort hotel, the gazebo was built in about 1888 when the area was being developed as a summer resort. The Gazebo is a good example of a type of structure popular during the late Victorian period. Variously called belvederes, pavilions, summer houses and garden houses, gazebos sprang up across America in the 1880s decorating public parks and private grounds. Open on all sides, these picturesque constructions offered rest and repose while promoting a feeling of harmony with nature. One of the most frequently photographed structures in the Ute Pass area, it is the signature building for the town. The Gazebo is an easily recognized visual landmark for the town of Green Mountain Falls and a popular site for community and private events.
