Littleton City Council will soon weigh in on a set of regulations that would govern short-term rentals in the city, almost two years after the prior council narrowly rejected a stricter set of rules.

If approved following a Nov. 17 public hearing, the proposed regulations would require owners of short-term rentals — often rooms in private homes, or entire houses, rented through sites like Airbnb or VRBO — to obtain a $200 city license to be renewed annually, provide handouts about city rules to guests, and provide contact information for a local person who can respond to problems within two hours.

The regulations would also cap the number of guests at two per bedroom or a maximum of eight per house, cap the number of days a renter can stay at 28, and mandate one parking space per bedroom, though limited to two on-street parking spaces.

International observers tour Arapahoe election facility In difficult year, pro-democracy group says county process seems smooth, advanced

Amid one of the most challenging elections in living memory, international elections observers toured Arapahoe County’s elections warehouse on Oct. 28, part of ongoing efforts to monitor how the work of the republic is achieved.

Representatives of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly toured the county’s sprawling election facility in west Littleton, one of two stops the pair made in Colorado.

The OSCE, an Austrian-based coalition of 57 nations founded in 1975, promotes causes including human rights, freedom of the press and fair elections. The organization’s Parliamentary Assembly began monitoring international elections in 1993, and has observed American presidential elections consistently since 2004 under an agreement with the federal government.

The organization won’t release its final report on the 2020 election until after Election Day, but an interim report released on Oct. 22 expressed concern about how the election was being handled nationally, citing voter disenfranchisement concerns, shaky new election processes in many states, disorganization in federal election oversight, the potential for postelection violent political unrest and President Donald Trump’s repeated allegations of mass voter fraud, which the organization fears will call the legitimacy of the election into question.

Despite the challenges, things seem to be going smoothly so far in Arapahoe County, the observers said.

Arapahoe County, the state’s third most populous, was part of a nationwide surge in early voting, Perl told the observers.

Lopez said she hoped the observers saw Arapahoe County as a model.

“I hope they take away how secure, safe and welcoming our process is for every voter in Arapahoe County,” Lopez said. “There’s no reason not to vote — not in Colorado.”

Lopez said rampant misinformation about voting is among the biggest challenges faced by local elections officials, and urged voters to seek out reliable sources of information — not memes on social media.

Perl said she hoped the observers saw Arapahoe County’s processes as a solid integration of technology

Baker said he previously toured Arapahoe County’s facility in 2008, several years before Colorado instituted statewide mail ballots.

“Colorado has a robust practice of early mail voting,” Baker said. “We thought it would be interesting to see how far ahead in the process a county can be. There are a lot of jurisdictions in the country where they haven’t been able to do many of the steps we’ve seen today.”

Though the OSCE normally sends about 100 elections observers to the United States, they sent about half that many this year, as they navigated the complications of travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organization’s observers haven’t received a warm welcome in some parts the country. OSCE observers were barred from observing North Carolina’s election process this year, and states including Arizona, Florida and Ohio ban international observers.

In 2012, Texas Governor Greg Abbott threatened OSCE monitors with arrest if they attempted to enter Texas election facilities.

“Our goal,” Henriksen said, “is to help develop democracies in a peaceful way, and to help them be more open and transparent.”

Welcoming new members to our media family

I

n February 2012, my wife Ann and I acquired nine community newspapers from a Texas-based company, all in South Metro Denver and in two communities near FROM THE Colorado Springs.

PUBLISHER At that time, I had been recently brought in to manage several distressed community newspapers in Jefferson and Adams counties. I immediately merged all these newspapers into a new company that we named Colo- Jerry Healey rado Community Media. State tightens COVID-19 rules for county Restaurants, other businesses, events, places of worship to be affected

As restrictions continue to escalate in the Denver metro area, the state public-health department announced that Arapahoe County is now under greater restrictions amid the growing spread of COVID-19.

On Oct. 28, Arapahoe County was moved to safer-at-home level 2, according to a release from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The changes affect capacity

for businesses, restaurants, places of worship, and other activities and locations. Colorado’s safer-at-home order came after the statewide stay-at-home ended in spring. In mid-September, the state broke the safer-at-home policy into three levels that counties qualify for based on how dire the local virus’ spread is. If the trend becomes severe enough, counties may be moved back to stay-at-home orders.

The new safer-at-home level for Arapahoe County is expected to last for at least two weeks.

As of Oct. 23, every safer-at-home level limits personal gatherings to 10 or fewer people from no more than two households.

“Now that the reopening of schools is bringing more people into contact with each other, and cooler weather is

beginning to drive more people indoors than during the summer, we’re seeing a steep rise in COVID case numbers,” Nancy Sharpe, Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners chair, said in a news release.

“Blunting the spread of COVID now, at the onset of the annual flu season, is especially crucial to ensuring that we don’t overburden our hospital system in the county and throughout Colorado,” Sharpe continued. “We share everyone’s frustration at these restrictions, but our numbers are rising in ways that jeopardize our ability to keep the county open without further mitigation efforts.”

The level 2 restrictions now faced by Arapahoe have brought about the following capacity changes: • Restaurants may operate at 50%

Colorado at critical juncture with COVID-19, state warns

Citing “an alarming increase in hospitalizations due to COVID-19,” the state public-health department painted a dire picture of where the coronavirus’s spread could end up in the coming months in a recent news release.

A few days later, Gov. Jared Polis told Coloradans that “the trends are unsustainable and these numbers are very concerning.”

“If these trends continue, we will exceed (April) hospitalization num-

bers — the peak of our first wave — by (November), and the most recent modeling predicts that we’ll exceed all of our existing hospital capacity by the end of the year,” Polis said in an Oct. 27 new release. “There’s time to fix this by staying ‘safer at home,’ signing up for exposure notifications, wearing a mask when you have to be out, avoiding groups and washing your hands regularly.”

Colorado recently launched a voluntary and free “exposure notifications” service that lets people know if they’ve been near another person who tests positive for COVID-19 within a

14-day period and chooses to upload the results.

If Coloradans opt in to the service, their smartphones will share anonymous tokens with others’ phones — if they have also opted in — through Bluetooth technology. Tokens are not associated with any phone number, name, location or IP (internet protocol) address, and they change every 15 minutes to add an extra layer of anonymity, according to the governor’s office news release. Colorado launched that statewide system on Oct. 25 in partnership with

Google and Apple.

To avoid increasing infections and strain on hospitals over the next three months, a “substantial increase” in effort in fighting the virus’s spread will be needed, the state public-health department said in a news release.

Increases in contacts over the holidays will likely accelerate case growth, and intensive-care unit hospital capacity may be exceeded in December or January, the news release said.

“The window to improve (the virus trend) is over the next several weeks to assure that critical care capacity is not stressed,” the release said.

Police search for three men in assault on homeowner

Littleton Police are searching for three men suspected of assaulting a south Littleton homeowner on Oct. 22, though police say they have little to go on.

A homeowner on South Windermere Circle, just north of Mineral Avenue, reported he was assaulted by three men wearing masks and carrying guns in his driveway at about 9 p.m. Oct. 22, said Cmdr. Trent Cooper, a Littleton Police spokesman.

The victim described the men as three Black males, two in dark clothing and one in light clothing, wearing masks. The victim said one of the men fired a shot. Cooper said police did not find a shell casing at the scene.

The victim also said he was struck in the head with a gun by one of the men.

Responding officers noted a large amount of blood on the victim’s forehead, Cooper said.

The men are believed to have left the area in a dark SUV, possibly a black Ford Explorer.

Some of the incident was captured by a Ring doorbell, showing three men matching the victim’s description,

though Cooper said the footage was dark and not particularly conclusive.

The homeowner “can’t provide any information that points us one way or another at this point,” Cooper said.

“He doesn’t want to give us information to us about why he might have been targeted, or who his associates are.”

The case remains under active investigation, but Cooper said residents should not be worried.

“This is a crime that’s very uncharacteristic of Littleton,” he said. “It’s unsettling, but we don’t have any reason to believe this is an ongoing pattern of crime that will repeat.”

The small neighborhood on South Windermere Circle has made news before: A home 13 houses down from where the incident took place caught fire last year, a day before a city hearing to decide whether it should be condemned. The whereabouts of the owner remain unknown.

“For the southern end of the city, it’s one of our busier neighborhoods,” Cooper said.

Cooper said anyone with information in the case should call Detective Chris Mannerings at 303-795-3894.

A county’s level is determined by three metrics: the rate of new cases, the percentage of COVID-19 tests that come back positive and whether hospitalizations are increasing, stable or declining.

Those points may be addressed in future iterations of the regulations, said City Attorney Reid Betzing, who said the proposed regulations are intended to provide a starting point ahead of a forthcoming overhaul of city land use and zoning codes, called the Universal Land Use Code or ULUC process.

“This is just a first step,” Betzing said in an email. “Our intent was never to tackle all issues associated with (short-term rentals) but rather to give us a framework to work from as we go forward.”

Future updates to the proposed regulations could differentiate between rentals that are the owner’s primary residence or non-primary residence, Betzing said, with non-primary residences limited as rentals in certain city zoning areas, or subject to tighter limits on guests or lengths of stay.

2018 effort failed to pass City council labored over short-term rental regulations through much of 2018, after a group of citizens urged council to take action following complaints about a “party house” in a south Littleton neighborhood revealed the city had little oversight over shortterm rentals. Radulovich said that he would still like to see tighter regulations on ownership, and was still staunchly opposed to the idea of corporate or out-of-town owners operating numerous properties.

He said he was also perplexed by a clause in the proposed ordinance that prohibited short-term rentals in carriage houses, also called accessory dwelling units or ADUs. “Having a rental in an ADU seems like the best arrangement possible,” he said. “That was strange to me.”

Radulovich said Airbnb itself has taken positive steps in recent months, including a ban on “party houses” instituted in August.

Some of the short-term rental owners who sat across the table from Radulovich on the task force also expressed optimism about the proposed regulations.

“We all agreed we want to allow short-term rentals for those owners who are good actors, and to put some structure around controlling the bad actors, and I think this gets us a lot closer to that goal,” said Michael Orf, who owns a second home he uses as a short-term rental. “I think the old (proposed regulations) failed because they got too detailed too fast. This package isn’t quite complete, but there’s time to take all that up.”

Bodhi Allen, who rents out an apartment unit at her primary residence near downtown, said short-term rentals don’t have to be a free-for-all that aggravate neighbors.

“You can vet your guests,” Allen said. “We’ve got people coming to town for weddings, reunions, or even staying here to get medical procedures done. We hope it’s a boon for local businesses. We live here too and we want it to be a good experience for everyone involved.”

“We couldn’t do some of our normal Halloween programming this year, but we wanted to come up with something festive,” said park interpreter Victoria Sutton, who spearheaded the Enchanted Forest walk.

Sutton and others reached out to a coterie of Colorado Renaissance Festival performers, who were otherwise unable to don their costumes this year after the festival was canceled.

In addition to the performers, costumed youngsters met harpists, bagpipers, and volunteers from the HawkQuest birds-of-prey rescue showing off some of the center’s mighty birds.

E-cigarette makers and vape shops are enticing kids with flavors like cotton candy, gummy bear and bubble gum. And nationally, over 5 million kids are using these flavored e-cigarettes.

Vape shops and tobacco companies say their products aren’t ending up in kids’ hands, but that’s just not true. Many retailers still sell to minors, and many of them in Denver even illegally sold products during the COVID-19 shutdown violating emergency orders.

Let’s stop pretending vape shops and the industry care about public health or the health of our children. It’s time to stop the sale of flavored tobacco products to protect our kids.

swearing without QUIET swearing.

DESPERATION Believe it or not, four-letter words were once impermissible in films.

Now it would be almost impossible to find a film other than one of Disney’s or Hallmark’s that wasn’t filled with them.

Hint: It’s said 506 times in “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

My swearing is never directed at someone. It’s directed at something, such as a remote control that is playing hide and seek.

Now and then when I can’t open crackers I’ll say something profane.

I don’t know how Charles Dickens managed without four-letter words.

His novels would have been so much better.

If you tried to play a game of shots watching “Good Will Hunting,” waiting for one four-letter word in particular, you’d be legally drunk by the time Will meets Skylar.

As is true with many overused words, four-letter words have innumerable synonyms as well as slang terms.

However, when it comes to expletives, most of us don’t look around for creativity, and go straight to the most common and most familiar.

Walking across campus one day behind members of our men’s basketball team, I realized they only knew about nine or 10 words.

ike most 15-month-olds in daycare, my daughter has had six colds this year. And every time I have had her tested for COVID-19. Many thought I was being ridiculous. Then one GUEST day, after one day of a runny nose, she COLUMN tested positive. It was a vindication I never wanted. But one I was not completely surprised by.

As a family physician, I have cared for many COVID-19 patients (even as young as 10 months) Dr. Stephanie whose only symptom was a runny nose. If you develop even one COVID-19 symptom — please do not hesitate. Go get tested, not just for yourself, but for your community. Yes, the COVID-19 symptoms are extensive and common.

Most of you are likely to develop a runny nose, cough, fever, chills, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches, loss of sense of smell/taste, sore throats, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea at some point by the end of this year.

Testing is now widely available and at many places, such as the health center where I work, with no out-of-pocket cost. Testing might not change your treatment but it can prevent you from unknowingly infecting someone else — someone who unfortunately could become much sicker than you.

Testing is one way to protect your loved ones and neighbors. But wearing your mask is just as important.

My husband and I tried our best to avoid COVID-19 — we socially distanced and wore masks as much as possible. So far, we have both tested negative. But infection does seem inevitable considering my baby loves sneaking up on me with affectionate “dinosaur” kisses.

My baby could not wear a mask. I am incredibly grateful that she is doing well, and hopefully, thanks to early detection, we prevented her from spreading it to our friends and family.

I am proud to fight on the frontlines against COVID-19. Please help me in this fight and wear a mask, socially distance and get tested without hesitation. Front-line workers, babies, and the most vulnerable are counting on you.

Over the last 12 years, I have now written 600 published columns. AdWINNING ditionally, I have posted thousands WORDS of messages through social media and have been on podcasts, radio interviews, and have appeared as a keynote speaker numerous times here in the states as well as around Michael Norton the globe.

I continue to be humbled by these opportunities to connect with you. So first, let me say thank you to all of you who send me emails and messages, I sincerely appreciate you all and love our exchanges. Happily, most of our exchanges are extremely positive, after all the column is called “Winning Words.” There is a percentage of our readers who love to challenge me on a thought or an idea that I had shared, and in most cases, it is a very healthy and engaging dialogue. And then there are a few people who try and provoke an argument, all I can say

is that sometimes we just have a difference of opinion.

So here in column number 600, I wanted to answer a couple of questions, and sometimes concerns, that I have received from our community. I am often asked why I have not taken a stance or a position on a sensitive topic.

Some even suggesting that my silence must clearly define how I really feel or intimating that I have always stayed right down the middle, not choosing sides so that I do not offend anyone. And a part of this is very true as my goal is never to offend anyone but to encourage everyone.

Regardless of what has been happening in our community and in our country, my column has remained consistent. Winning words, that’s it. My attempt each week is to inspire hope and motivate top performance. I take all other issues off the table. This is when I receive questions like, “How do you feel about …?” Or “What do you think of …?” And “Where do you stand on …?” You can probably guess this last and most common question over the past two months, “Who are you voting for?”

The important topics where we differ in our beliefs and opinions may be much bigger than these examples, but that does not mean we get to quit on each other.

Where do I stand? My belief is that

as a society we cannot buy into the fact that we are too far gone, or that the chasm between us is so wide that we can’t become united again. Some might say that I am being naïve, and that is okay too as we are entitled to our opinions. Other sources might want us to believe that our society cannot be repaired. And that is just not true.

Where do I stand? Where hope begins. For those of you who said I am always right in the middle, you were correct. I am right in the middle of unconditional love, unconditional forgiveness, kindness, gentleness, compassion, generosity, goodness, encouragement, opportunity, justice,

equality and benevolence.

David Scott Neumann David Scott Neumann, age 62, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 17, 2020 in Dodgeville, WI. He is the son of Marvin and Carol Neumann, long-time residents of Centennial Co, now of Ellisville, MO. He was born October 22, 1957 in Milwaukee, WI. As a youth he loved skiing and hiking in the Colorado mountains, playing board games, listening to classic rock and attending concerts, was a student of history and was a fierce fan of the Green Bay Packers.

He was active in the Boy Scouts and earned his Eagle Scout Award in 1973 and was also in the Order of the Arrow.

He was graduated from Arapahoe HS in 1976 and attended Colorado State University.

He married Barbara Mulloney in

Golden, Colorado in 1979 and they had one son.

He moved to WI in 1985 to pursue his love of farming.

He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 139 for 35 years. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Besides his parents he is survived by his son Jesse D. Neumann of Broomfield, CO, one sister Deborah Neumann Ksiazek (Bob), a niece Carolyn Ksiazek and a nephew Rob Ksiazek.

We will miss his humor and wit which sparked many lively family discussions.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, October 21st at Gorgen Funeral in Dodgeville, WI. He was laid to rest at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Centennial, CO.

Events of 2020 put spotlight on demographics of industry

This year’s Great American Beer Festival was held in a virtual format in October.

he craft beer industry — like much of America — is facing a reckoning on two levels right now: A pandemic ended more than a decade of growth well short of the industry’s goal to become 20% of the national beer market by 2020 and a racial justice movement highlighted craft brewing’s dominant white male culture and lack of diversity.

The combination led to sobering conversations within the craft beer community at a time the industry typically would have gathered in Denver for a toast at the annual Great American Beer Festival.

The Boulder-based Brewers Association that hosts the festival canceled the nation’s largest beer tasting event this year — and it expects to do the same in 2021 — because of the coronavirus outbreak. Instead, GABF moved into a virtual format in October with the presentation of the much-coveted awards.

The diversity of beers entered into the annual competition surpasses the racial diversity in the craft beer workforce and community. The problem is not new, but the focus on the issue amplified earlier this year amid the Black Lives Matter protests and demands from consumers for more significant change within the beer industry.

“I think our trade was slow to think about diversity, and that’s not good,” said Marty Jones, an industry veteran and beer marketer. “But I’m glad it’s become a topic because we have dropped the ball on being a more welcoming trade.”

Lopsided numbers In Colorado, more than 400 breweries are operating, and just three are Black-owned — Novel Strand and Hogshead in Denver, and Outworld in Longmont. Spangalang Brewing in Denver is in the process of adding a partner, who is Black. In addition, about 10 breweries in Colorado are Latino-owned or focused. The numbers fit national figures from 2018 showing 1% of small and independent breweries are Black-owned and 2.4% are Latino-owned.

The Brewers Association — the trade group that represents independent small brewers across the country — began a program to address the lack of diversity in 2017 that included hiring a diversity ambassador and a grant program. But it took more significant steps in July after facing criticism for not doing enough to address racism actions among its membership.

In mid-June, three weeks after George Floyd’s death in police custody, the association posted a message to social media stating it “stands in solidarity against racial injustice.”

“We strive to create an inclusive community that feels safe and welcome. We will take a stand, we will listen, and we will learn,” the statement continued.

The words didn’t satisfy critics who wanted the organization to take a stronger stand against breweries that use insensitive names for beers or face allegations of racial discrimination. On the other side, the association’s leaders said they lost some members because of the decision to speak out.

In an interview last week, Bob Pease, the association’s president and CEO, defended the association, saying it did “quite a bit” to address diversity in recent years. But he also acknowledged “we were a little bit slow on uptake with the killing of (George) Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.”

“We all want a more diverse and equitable craft beer community,” he continued. “And we all have more work to do. We are committed to doing the work.”

Changes in rules In July, the association amended its bylaws to allow for the removal of a member — a provision missing entirely in the prior governing documents. In August, the association introduced a new code of conduct for its members designed to “eliminate discrimination, harassment, and bias of all types.” And in September, the association outlined a grievance process that its professional members can use to police other breweries for violations of the code of conduct.

“We have seen and heard the criticisms and questions surrounding the Brewers Association’s silence regarding racism among its members. We hear you,” Pease said in a July statement announcing the new changes.

“Our limited public response to date has not been sufficient for many but it does not equate to apathy.”

The conversations about race and di-

versity in the craft brewing industry come at a difficult time.

Earlier in the pandemic, industry outlooks suggested that 60% of breweries wouldn’t survive to June.

Those dire predictions proved too pessimistic, as some breweries were able to get financial help or adapt to meet the to-go market, but still more than a dozen have shuttered in Colorado.

The situation remains tenuous, particularly for breweries that built their business on the taproom model selling beers across the bar rather than packaging their beer for sale at retail outlets.

In 2019, craft beer volume amounted to 13.6% of the U.S. market, well short of the goals set years earlier in part because of acquisitions from larger brewers.

So far in 2020, overall sales are down about 10%, but breweries’ sales onpremise decreased 40%, the Brewers Association said.

The association is feeling the pinch, too. The cancellation of its events — the Craft Brewers Conference, Homebrew Con and GABF, among others — because of public health concerns cost the organization about 70% of its annual revenue and led to 23 layoffs, or about 35% reduction in staff. The job cuts led to an outcry from brewery guilds across the country and even more criticism of Pease directly regarding his salary and recent hiring decisions.

Other cutbacks included reductions in research spending and the temporary elimination of grant programs, including the one focused on diversity.

Despite the setbacks, Pease is quick to say the association “is here to stay.”

The tightened budget and a financial nest egg built from surpluses in recent years will keep it going at a diminished level. “We are resilient. We are scrappy, just like our members. We are adapting. We are improvising,” he said. “But like many of our members, we have been wounded by the pandemic for sure.”

How quickly it bounces back de-

pends on when in-person events like GABF come to life. The association engaged beer fans with a passport to deals at breweries across the nation for $20, but it won’t amount to a fraction of the normal revenue.

“If and when the world gets back to normal — and I say that with a big `if ’ because who knows what the new normal will look like — but if large events do come back — and we are thinking at this point 2022 at the earliest — we will be fine. We will be right back growing again,” Pease said.

Breweries take action In Colorado, the Black Lives Matter movement inspired action on the part of breweries. WeldWerks Brewing in Greeley donated $10,000 to the local Black Lives Matter chapter and Campaign Zero to end police brutality.

And dozens participated in the Black is Beautiful collaboration brew that benefited local social justice charities.

“Breweries in Colorado recognize it’s not only a lack of diversity in customers but a lack of diversity in staff and how can they create pipelines to address that,” said Shawnee Adelson, the executive director of the Colorado Brewers Guild.

Station 26 Brewing in Denver partnered with Regis University earlier this year to create a diversity scholarship for underrepresented students to complete the school’s brewing certificate program. The first recipients will be named in 2021.

“The brewing industry is not very diverse,” said Matthew Peetz, the director of the program. “It’s mostly white males, and I think that every industry benefits from a diversity of opinions and background.”

Odell Brewing in Fort Collins recently hired a person to coordinate its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts to address the hiring process as well as educate staff.

Wynne Odell, the brewery’s cofounder and a member of the Brewers Association’s board of directors, said the criticism aimed at the brewing industry was a factor, but “it was also all of us waking up in our own organizations and realizing this is a more immediate concern.”

Jones, the veteran beer industry leader, sees this moment as an opportunity.

“It’s only natural that it would become an issue in craft beer. Everyone is taking a look at themselves and wondering if they could do more,” he said.

He added: “What better way to bring people together and find common ground than to talk politely over a couple beers?”

He figures his present location, close to the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, is a good choice for a guy who sees his future as a musician instead.

Rice graduated from West Virginia University in 2010 after starting a day job sitting on a rig in 2008, alternated with an office job with the oil company.

For a while, he worked on rigs and in an office in West Texas, where he had a chance to see more major music figures, in addition to Prine and Shaver.

Rice’s wife, who has family in Littleton, Highlands Ranch and Boulder, is a geochemist and Rice “has geology friends in town ...” But there “are no geology jobs” here at this time and Rice is concentrating on this, his second release — with the same band as his first album.

“I chipped away at it for about two years — one piece at a time,” he says, continuing on about how much he “loves going into a studio in Austin and playing live with studio musi-

Rodney Rice, a resident of the Ken Caryl area west of Littleton, developed an interest in music at an early age, he says, as he “pillaged my older sister’s CD and tape collection ... She took me to see John Prine. It was the first concert I went to ...” They sat in the back row. Prine “captivated” the young fan and a story began.

Rice’s recent (Oct. 23) release of his own work, “SAME SHIrT, DIFFERENT DAY,” recorded with a band in Austin, Texas, is now available, streaming from Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and more.

The record case lists personnel on each song in the album. Rice is always there on acoustic guitar and vocals as is Rick Richards on drums, but then on some there is a horn part with sax and trumpet and on another, a Hammond organ chimes in. On “Free At Last,” we find a fiddle and a dobro included. Bassist David Carroll’s name appears often, as does multiinstrumentalist Andre Moran, whose studio is the production location every time.

Rice recently appeared at Golden’s well-known country spot, Buffalo Rose, and is focusing on publicizing the release, since, as he puts it: “There are no geologist’s jobs or music gigs here right now ...”

He has enjoyed the beautiful Colorado Trail and been “fly fishing a lot.”

He rides his bike at all times of year and will “stay positive, keep the eyes and ears open” and hope people will discover his music.

Rice’s favorites? “Memoirs of Our Youth” and “Ain’t Got a Dollar.”

Favorite superheroes, otherworldly personas and cute kids’ costumes livened up the trail at deKoevend Park for the annual Hoofin’ It Through the Hollows 5K race in west Centennial.

South Suburban Parks and Recreation’s Halloween-themed event also featured a roughly mile-long “Trick or Treat Trail,” where kids 12 and younger collected candy at designated “spooky spots” on the trail map.

The Oct. 24 event’s costume contest

took place online this year — photos were uploaded to a Facebook album for people to vote on.

Parks department staff dressed up for the race, too, donning costumes based on characters in “The Wizard of Oz.” “Get those robotic legs going!” yelled assistant race director Heidi Somer, dressed as a scarecrow, cheering on a runner in a robot costume.

After enduring a shutdown of parksand-recreation programming in the spring, Somer relishes seeing crowds enjoy activities together at events such as the 5K. “It’s wonderful even with all the modifications,” Somer said, referring to coronavirus precautions. “That’s OK — we can live with that.”

Heritage fall play makes up for spring disappointment Despite smaller cast and other limitations, high school theater students persevere

The show must go on. Despite many setbacks, Heritage High School hosted its fall play, “The Election,” on Oct. 22-24.

“I am so proud of everyone who has been involved in this show,” said senior Briana Gebhart, who worked on the production. “I’m amazed and so thankful for the great theater program we have, and I’m so excited that this was not something that I had to be disappointed about this year.”

Heritage’s winter musical, “Guys and Dolls,” was canceled in March as schools shut down early in the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving many Heritage students afraid of another disappointment. But with extra safety precautions, the October play was held on schedule.

“We’ve moved outside, and we’re wearing masks, but we also have a smaller audience size to allow for social distancing, and we will be streaming the show for a few days to get some more revenue since we can’t sell as many tickets,” Gebhart said.

Many changes went right to the core of the normal theater environment.

“We now have less people (on) both the cast and crews,” said senior Reanna Romero, who headed the play’s costume crew. “We could not do the

Despite the changes, the cast and crew were happy for the opportunity to make new memories. With the cancellations and changes to school this year, the fall play was one constant amidst the chaos.

“Though it is hard to see the good in things right now, being able to work

on this show for my senior year has made my life complete and meaningful,” Romero said.

“Everyone seemed so much closer because we all could relate to each other in terms of what we had lost last spring. It felt so much more connected,” said student Thomas Garcia. “It felt like such a tightly knit group and everyone could tell the
