Littleton officials are tuning into a plan by DISH Network to bring new jobs and a 5G broadband network to town, but the full picture is still a little fuzzy.

A convoluted series of mergers, lawsuits and settlements among telecom giants means DISH Network plans to open headquarters for a new wireless phone network in the Denver area in coming years, and could base many new jobs at its Riverfront property at Bowles Avenue and Santa Fe Drive.

The property is currently home to a DISH Network call center.

While DISH plans to create as many as 2,000 jobs in the area, they will be split between Riverfront and properties in the Inverness and Meridian areas, according to a news release.

DISH has not announced specifics about how many of the jobs will be in Littleton, or what the job titles or pay range will be, a spokesman said in an email.

Law enforcement agencies to block radio channels

Sheriff’s office, police departments to make move in January

The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office will soon block the public from listening to its radio communications.

The move comes because suspects “often know we’re coming to calls — the bad guys know where we are, they know where we’re staging. We just don’t want criminals to know (what we’re doing),” said Deborah Sherman, sheriff ’s office spokeswoman. “We’ve seen, in the recent past, strip-mall burglars that had scanners in their cars.”

The need to communicate with other agencies that have also encrypted their radio traffic drove the decision as well, Sherman said.

In recent months and years, other agencies across Colorado and the nation also have blocked access to police radios — often referred to as “scanners,” devices that pick up law enforcement conversations in the field. Media experts have decried the trend as a loss of transparency.

Law enforcement officials, on the other hand, have cited safety concerns for officers as a main reason to encrypt their radio channels.

Switching between public and encrypted channels on an as-needed basis is difficult, according to the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office. Officers have described changing channels in highpressure situations as cumbersome and stressful.

The shooting death of Douglas County Sheriff ’s Deputy Zackari Parrish is an example cited. Parrish was killed in December 2017 in an incident that drew a heavy, multi-agency police response to Highlands Ranch after a gunman opened fire on multiple deputies.

Parrish was injured and left unresponsive, unable to evacuate the gunman’s apartment. That left the gunman with Parrish’s radio, allowing the suspect to obtain information.

Encryption would not have helped during the Parrish shooting, where communications were compromised, but it demonstrated the difficulty in switching channels from the field, the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office has

told Colorado Community Media.

Asking officers to change channels in life-threatening situations is nearly impossible, Castle Rock Police Chief Jack Cauley said in a previous interview with CCM. As of Dec. 2, the Castle Rock, Parker and Lone Tree police departments and Elbert County law enforcement encrypted, along with the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office. The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office will encrypt by midJanuary, Sherman said. That includes the “primary” channel — the one that media and the public generally listen to — as well as others for special operations, SWAT and investigative matters, she said. Arapahoe will encrypt nine channels in all.

At least some municipalities in Arapahoe County will likely also encrypt their police radio traffic by mid-January, according to Sherman.

Following suit The Aurora Police Department encrypted its radio traffic in 2016. In a move widely lamented by Denver-area media, the Denver Police Department’s radio communications went dark at the end of July 2019.

Aurora and other departments’ move to encrypt was a main factor in the Arapahoe sheriff office’s decision, Sherman said, but she acknowledged that the sheriff ’s office bought new equipment that enabled it to communicate with Aurora police in 2016.

South Metro Fire Rescue updated its radios earlier this year so firefighters can communicate with law enforcement partners who use encryption, even though South Metro Fire itself doesn’t encrypt, according to spokesman Eric Hurst.

“All South Metro radio traffic is ‘in the clear,’ and there are no plans to encrypt our radio channels at this time,” Hurst said.

Sherman said it is possible for the sheriff ’s office to communicate with agencies that have encrypted without the sheriff ’s office encrypting its own radio traffic, but doing so wouldn’t address concerns of officer safety that have generally driven agencies’ decisions to encrypt.

“The reason everyone’s going at the same time in Arapahoe County is so we can all touch our radios once and plug in all our encryption keys,” said Sherman, adding that to accommodate

changes in Denver, Aurora and Douglas County, “it makes sense to follow suit and encrypt our channels at the same time.”

The Littleton Police Department’s reason for encrypting soon — around the start of the new year — has similar motivations, including officer safety, victim privacy and agency cooperation, Cmdr. Trent Cooper said.

“Due to the fact that most agencies are moving forward with encryption, we need to as well to be able to maintain interoperability and be able to communicate with other agencies, particularly on a multi-agency critical incident response,” said Cooper, Littleton police’s spokesman.

Media access varies Media experts have long held concerns that encryption diminishes accountability for law enforcement and the ability for journalists to do their jobs, and ultimately leaves them at the mercy of law enforcement to report incidents.

Colorado Press Association CEO Jill Farschman said more encryption means less transparency.

“It means the public will be increasingly subjected to information that comes from non-objective sources such as public information offices,” she said.

Arapahoe sheriff ’s personnel carried out a SWAT response to an incident at South Ivy Street and East Maplewood Avenue Nov. 30 in Centennial, but the sheriff ’s office did not share information through a news release or social media.

“It would be impossible to tweet out the hundreds of calls we can possibly receive in a single day,” said Sherman, adding that immediate neighbors at that SWAT response were informed and told to shelter in place. “We use our Twitter account for different reasons — including to alert the public about situations when their lives may be in danger and what actions they need to protect themselves. The SWAT call on Nov. 30 did not pose a threat to the community at large.”

Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown said although immediate access to live information on the scanner will close, the public isn’t shut out from information about the sheriff ’s office.

“Our records are open for them to inspect,” Brown said. “That still hasn’t

changed the process of allowing people to request records. It’s an encryption for this immediate access — so we’re not hiding anything. It could be something that is beneficial in the preservation of someone else’s privacy as well as the safety of deputies.”

Even without public scanner access, area residents may still receive updates from news media that may be given scanner access.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office has plans to help media outlets access scanner traffic despite the encryption. The office will prepare an agreement called a memorandum of understanding, or MOU, for media outlets, Brown said.

Denver police and local media outlets for months negotiated an agreement that would allow newsrooms to have access to encrypted scanners, but to no avail. The Denver Post reported in July that a proposed agreement restricted how newsrooms could report information heard over scanners. The proposal would have allowed any city representative to examine records of scanner traffic held by the news organizations, in one example.

On Nov. 25, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock sent a letter to local media explaining his decision to encrypt and included an MOU. News organizations must sign the MOU to access the channels of law enforcement agencies in Douglas and Elbert counties, and only “legitimate” media outlets, as determined by the sheriff ’s office, would be able to do so, the letter says.

Of the eight media organizations offered access, none had signed the contract as of Dec. 2, Undersheriff Holly Nicholson-Kluth said. Colorado Community Media received and reviewed the MOU but had not made a decision on whether to sign it as of the reporting of this story.

Members of the public can receive recordings of radio traffic through a public records request after an incident occurs, but their requests would be subject to Colorado’s open records laws and could be denied if an investigation is still open, for example.

A bill introduced by state Rep. Kevin Van Winkle, R-Highlands Ranch, that would have prohibited agencies from encrypting except in certain circumstances, like tactical or investigative situations, died in committee during the 2018 Colorado legislative session.

Snowbound sidewalks can leave vulnerable residents stranded Blind, elderly, disabled find themselves stuck when locals don’t shovel

The monster snowstorm that pummeled the Denver metro area just days before Thanksgiving strained Littleton’s snowplowing capacity, but advocates say poorly shoveled sidewalks can pose a threat to vulnerable people long after the roads are cleared.

block, much less to a bus stop.”

Businesses and absentee landlords seem to be some of the worst offenders, Reiskin said.

“We notice businesses that keep them clear, and we patronize them year-round,” she said.

Reiskin said even some well-meaning shovelers simply scoop out a path as wide as their shovel blade, which doesn’t accommodate wheelchairs or people with walkers.

Shoveling the vast majority of sidewalks in town is the responsibility of adjacent property owners, said David Flaig, Littleton’s landscape manager.

“The law says you’ve got 24 hours after the snowflakes stop falling to get your walk shoveled, and that means all the way to the corner,” Flaig said.

The city is responsible for shoveling about five miles of city-owned sidewalks, many on bridges or around city buildings, Flaig said, but citizens are responsible for many dozens more.

“If you live on a corner, that includes the curb cuts,” Flaig said.

The Thanksgiving storm was especially gnarly because the following days didn’t warm up enough to melt the snow and ice, Flaig said, and while city crews could put down more ice, there are environmental concerns at work.

“We could salt everything like crazy, and it would work, but at the end the South Platte would be about as salty as the South Pacific,” Flaig said.

Snowplows may fling snow and ice right back up on curb cuts, Flaig said, but it’s still residents’ responsibility to make sure they stay clear.

Poorly shoveled sidewalks can spell trouble for blind people, said Dan Burke, the spokesman for Littleton’s Colorado Center for the Blind.

“We teach independence, and that means we’ve got to be out in all kinds of weather,” Burke said. “You can’t be a fair-weather employee. But when we’re out and the sidewalks are jammed, it pushes us into the street, which just isn’t safe. for Littleton and good for DISH,” said Littleton Mayor Jerry Valdes, who said he hadn’t heard of the agreement until a reporter called. “Tech jobs attract young and smart people, and this could be a nice companion with some of the other tech firms we have in town.”

The move comes as part of an agreement after the Colorado Attorney General’s Office agreed in October to pull out of a multi-state lawsuit opposing a merger of T-Mobile and Sprint that was approved by the U.S. Justice Department in June. As part of the merger, DISH agreed to acquire the other companies’ prepaid wireless networks, creating the nation’s fourth-largest wireless phone carrier.

Under the terms of the agreement with the attorney general’s office, DISH agreed to maintain its new wireless headquarters in Littleton for at least seven years, according to a news release. In addition, DISH will roll out a slew of 5G high-speed broadband services by 2023. DISH faces up to $20 million in fines if it does not meet the terms of the agreement.

A separate agreement with T-Mobile mandates the rollout of 5G services across much of rural Colorado, which the company says will result in a massive increase in internet speeds in previously underserved areas.

The agreement is good news to Littleton City Manager Mark Relph,

who said he’s had a few brief conversations so far with DISH officials.

“I’m excited not just on the jobs front, but also for what the 5G technology could mean for the city,” Relph said.

The high-speed network could help the city network its traffic lights, so they could be timed to respond to variable traffic flows and help ease congestion, Relph said. Previous plans for such a project have assumed it could only be accomplished with fiber optic cable networks, which are far more expensive, Relph said.

“They’re likely going to face a lot of regulatory hurdles, but we’re eager to partner with them,” Relph said.

“We’ll see what sort of expansion they’re interested in here.”

DISH also owns a vacant lot across Bowles Ave. from the call center, according to county records. There are currently no listed plans to build on the property.

While DISH has long been one of Littleton’s larger employers, Relph characterized the city’s relationship with the company as “dormant.”

DISH has long been an economic driver in Littleton, said Jennifer Henninger, the city’s community development director.

“They send in people for training,” Henninger said. “They stay at our ho-

tels. A lot of the call center employees frequent the McDonald’s across the street, and DISH has told us they’d like more restaurants in the area that cater to people on call center wages.”

Relph said he anticipates more in-depth conversations with DISH representatives in coming months.

“It’s time to get together and talk about the future,” Relph said.

To get more young people inside city hall, Littleton’s youth advisory committee is planning to get out of city hall.

The Next Generation Advisory Committee, created by city council in early 2019, started hashing out plans at its Dec. 5 meeting to hit the streets to get the millennial set engaged in civic affairs.

“Young people have always had access to city council, but we haven’t seen much engagement from them,” said committee chair Iftin Abshir.

“Traditionally, if you look at the demographics of people at council meetings or on boards and commissions, they’re generally retired and from higher socioeconomic backgrounds, because they’ve got the time to engage.

The committee brainstormed a few ideas for engaging young residents at the meeting, including a Valentine’s Day shindig, a food truck festival, an Earth Day plant-a-thon and a restaurant and bar crawl.

The idea is to educate the millennial set on big issues Littleton is facing, and teach them how to make their voices heard.

“It may not sound tremendously exciting, but people do care about things like city code updates,” Abshir said. “Local government has the biggest impacts on our day-to-day lives, and hopefully we can bridge the gap between understanding and caring.”

After laboring over multiple drafts of a mission statement, the group also finalized its vision at the meeting: “The Next Generation Advisory Committee exists to represent, encourage and engage emerging generations in the city of Littleton.”

“We’re the ones who will be living with the consequences 50 years down the road,” Krause said.

Of the original 11 appointees to the group, nine officially remain on the roster, Abshir said, with a core of about six members who regularly attend the monthly meetings.

“I expected a little greater commitment considering how much work it was to get appointed,” Abshir said.

“But the people who are committed are very passionate. We have a lot of great conversations.”

The group’s attendance is still better than many youth councils, said Ryan Thompson, the city’s mediation coordinator, and the group’s liaison to city staff.

“Many of these groups don’t make it past their second or third meeting,” Thompson said. “We’re hitting milestones here.”

The group recently lost its liaison to city council, after councilmember Kyle Schlachter, who spearheaded the group, lost his reelection bid. Council had not yet appointed a new liaison as of the December meeting.

Thompson said he works to connect city staff with the group to use them as a resource for planning efforts. The committee has already yielded useful feedback, he said.

older folks say ‘Oh, that won’t matter soon, because everyone will be using self-driving cars,’ but that’s not what this group is telling us.”

The committee has emphasized that today’s young people will still want their own cars and single-family homes in the future, Thompson said.

If the group is successful, Abshir said, city officials will soon be able to start factoring in more insights from the younger set into planning efforts.

“They’ve got important perspectives to be heard,“ Abshir said. “They want a safe place to raise kids, a town that’s environmentally sustainable, and a place with character. Bringing in more perspectives strengthens the entire city.”

n 2007, Colorado’s then-Gov. Bill Ritter made a push to tackle climate change. Among the efforts: suggesting that Colorado adopt a policy similar to California’s stringent auto-emission regulations.

The Colorado Automobile Dealers Association opposed that idea, but it put forth a vision of its own.

“Most vehicle emissions come from older, high-polluting vehicles. It is our opinion that rather than heavily regulating new vehicles, the most effective solution is to permanently remove as many of these older, high-polluting vehicles as possible,” said Mark Zeigler, director of Clear the Air Foundation.

Thus, that foundation was born, an arm of the dealers’ association that takes in donated vehicles, recycles them and puts the proceeds toward scholarships for Colorado students looking to enter the automotive technician field.

With about 12 years under its belt, the foundation has taken thousands of cars off the road and counting. Here’s a look at how it all works and what the organization has its eye on.

How it works The nonprofit foundation was created in 2007 by the board of directors of the dealers’ association. Zeigler became the foundation’s director in 2018.

“When vehicles are donated, the engines are always destroyed, ensuring that we are clearing the air. Other parts are either recycled or parted out,” Ziegler said.

The foundation accepts vehicle donations from anyone in Colorado, and since it’s a 501(c)3, donors may get a tax benefit. It also takes in cash donations, which are combined with proceeds from the sale of vehicles to fund scholarships.

Racking up numbers Clear the Air is budgeted to provide $50,000 in scholarships annually. By partnering with school foundations, the foundation can receive matching funds, which doubles the award, Ziegler said.

“We also work with Matco Tools and Snap-on Tools to take advantage of their student discount programs.

These programs provide students with a 50% discount, which doubles the award,” Ziegler said. “We anticipate the total value of scholarships awarded in 2019 to exceed $100,000.”

Donations to Clear the Air come from all over Colorado, and its largest donor in 2018 and so far in 2019 is the Pueblo Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram store. Most donations come from new car dealers, and the foundation also takes donations from the public.

“I can tell you that in 2019, the average age of donated vehicles is 19 years,” Ziegler said.

Fueling education Most of the foundation’s scholarships go to students enrolled in a two-year auto tech program.

“Also, we are able to recognize employees at new car dealerships in a formal apprenticeship program with a tool scholarship,” Ziegler said.

There are thousands of jobs available in Colorado alone, according to Ziegler.

“According to the National Automobile Dealers Association, the average pay for an automotive technician is more than $61,000 a year, plus benefits,” Ziegler said. “A master certified automotive technician can earn more than $100,000 a year if they have the right work ethic.”

Pulling thousands off road As of Dec. 5, the foundation has permanently taken 4,421 vehicles off the road, Ziegler said.

“Over the past five years, we’ve averaged 619 each year,” Ziegler added. “However, we are already at 731 this year. We received the 501(c)3 designation in 2011; at that point, we could recycle vehicles.”

Addressing shortage For now, the foundation is focusing on increasing vehicle donations and getting more people interested in an auto tech career.

“We have a significant skills shortage across the country and here in Colorado,” Ziegler said. “There has been a focus on four-year degrees, to the detriment of skilled trades careers. A two-year associate’s degree in an automotive technician program can run around $14,000. Some schools even provide tools as part of tuition.”

All it would take is a recording of a barking pinscher blared from my backyard.

I don’t think Mr. Rogers would go for it. Maybe you have seen the ads for the new Tom Hanks movie, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood?”

We want better results in one or more areas of our personal lives or in our business. As a matter of fact, when I have asked people what achieving “better” results means for them, I typically hear words like improve, WINNING increase, expand, and reduce. Not sure WORDS about you, but when I think about getting better results, those words make sense to me too.

When I ask someone what they “will” do, I am not asking what they would do, could do, or should do, I am asking them specifically what they “will” do differently that will help them achieve better results. Have you ever found yourself in the woulda, coulda, shoulda trap? We all have at some point, I’m sure, and if only we focused on that one little word, “will,” we can improve and increase our likelihood of success and absolutely reduce the chances of our failure.

The next word to pay attention to in the question is “You.” I don’t ask them what their friend will do, or their associate will do differently, I ask each person a very precise question, what will “you” do differently to realize better results? We can always use help from co-workers, friends, and trusted advisors, however there is an old saying that is just as true today as it was yesterday, “If it’s to be, it’s up to me.” If improved, increased,

and expanded results are eluding you, apply some pressure on what “you” can do differently to achieve those better results.

Planning is critically important, but planning will only get us so far. At some point we must deliver, execute, and get the job done. I do not ask them what they are going to do, or what they have done in the past.

Instead, I ask everyone what they intend to “do” differently in order to exceed their expectations around the results they desire and goals they have set for themselves or their business. The greatest opportunity for achieving better results is found in the “do” of our doing, no excuses, just “do.”

Whatever our interests might be, like increasing our finances, getting in better physical condition, breaking a bad habit, building better relationships, expanding a business, growing deeper in our faith, or any other better result we are pursuing, we must be willing to go about it “differently.”

Some of us still end up doing what we have always done, because that’s the

have to say about this, but I think he’d want me to be tactful, be patient, and maybe even try to speak with the pinscher’s owner.

If I have something to say to neighbors, I don’t knock on doors. I respect

way we have always done it. We do the same thing over and over again, and yet we expect to see different or improved results. Some have said that this is the definition of insanity.

Another definition might identify it as our comfort zone. If we are looking for better results, let’s look to break out of that comfort zone.

“What will you do differently to achieve better results?” Try answering the question while focusing on these four words, “will, you, do, and differently.” Confidently own and commit to your answer, decisions, direction, and execution. And when you do, I have no doubt that you will be realizing better results today and in all your tomorrows yet to come.

Poorly shoveled sidewalks are bad news for the elderly, said Diane McClymonds, the executive director of TLC Meals on Wheels, which brings food to homebound seniors.

“It can mean the difference between being able to get to the doctor or not,” McClymonds said.

“And in a big storm like this last one, many of our clients aren’t able to shovel that much snow.”

Seniors who can’t shovel their walks can sign up for help from the Snow Squad, a city-run volunteer group, said Sharon Jorgensen, who runs the Aging Well Resource Center.

The program always needs volunteers, Jorgensen said. Right now, she’s got 11 volunteer shovelers on the list, but last year she wound

up with more than 80 seniors who needed shoveling help.

“It means everything to the folks on our waiting list,” Jorgensen said. “If you can help, get in touch.

Your neighbors need you.”

Whether city code enforcement issued any tickets for unshoveled sidewalks after the Thanksgiving storm wasn’t immediately available, said Jennifer Henninger, the city’s community development director, but residents who encounter unshoveled sidewalks can report them to the city through the “SeeClickFix” phone app.

Reiskin, the advocate for people with disabilities, said reporting unshoveled sidewalks doesn’t help much in the moment.

“We’d really like to see cities doing their own enforcement, rather than putting the onus on people out on the street,” Reiskin said.

“Reporting violators doesn’t help someone who’s stranded. We just really need people to take this seriously.”

Mary Lee Browne (Wetzel), February 11, 1939 November 16, 2019 was a loving wife for 52 years to Charles Willing Browne, III, (Will) and a devoted mother to her two surviving children, C. Willing Browne IV (Will), and Marie Louise Browne (Louise). Mary Lee was the proud Grandmother to her surviving Grandson, Jack Alberto Gonzalez (Jack), and is also survived by her sister, Alice Flynn, who resides in St. Louis, Missouri.

Mary Lee was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and attended Kirkwood High School in St. Louis. She then went on to attend Bradford Junior College and after graduation attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she met and fell in love with her future husband, Will. Mary Lee was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and received her Bachelor of Science. After her graduation Will and Mary Lee were married.

While Will finished his senior year, Mary Lee worked for a company that helped develop durable plastics. Following Will’s graduation they moved to Baltimore, Maryland where Will took a job with Martin - Marietta. A 1963 transfer brought the couple to Colorado and they settled in Littleton.

Mary Lee’s joy was raising her children and being involved in their lives, schools and sports. Mary Lee was the PTO President at all three of her children’s schools, Peabody Elementary School, Isaac Newton Junior High School and Littleton High School. She was a team mom for both of her children’s swim teams, her daughter’s soccer teams, her

son’s hockey teams and an involved mother in the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America.

Mary Lee’s passion was golf. She was an excellent golfer and a fierce competitor. She also enjoyed her bridge group and played throughout her life. Mary Lee was a four time women’s club champion at Columbine Country Club where she also lived in the community. Mary Lee was a Colorado Women’s Golf Association (CWGA) volunteer and President of the organization in 1990-1991. Long after concluding her term, she continued to volunteer for the CWGA serving on its Rules Committee well into this decade. She was selected as the association’s Volunteer of the Year in 2003.

Mary Lee was a dear friend to many and always a lot of fun. She was quick witted and enjoyed whatever social event was taking place. She will be remembered with joy and laughter by all.

Mary Lee was a faithful member of St. Michaels and All Angels Episcopal Church which she and her family attended for over 51 years. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 13th at 11:00am at St. Michael’s, 1400 S. University Blvd., Denver. A celebration of life will take place immediately following at Columbine Country Club from 1-4pm, 17 Fairway Lane in Columbine Valley. All who knew and loved Mary Lee are invited to attend.

hen Andrew Fraser was a boy growing up in Littleton, he knew he wanted to fly. Not only would he daydream of gliding through the sky, but at night, he would have active lucid dreams about flying.

He was finally able to realize his dreams of flying after skydiving 200 times — the number of times required by the United States Parachute Association to fly in a wingsuit, which is a one-piece article of clothing that allows a person to glide through the air while freefalling.

The art of wingsuit flying isn’t the province of reckless people on the fringe of society, Fraser says, despite the fact that he jumps from high in the sky to the ground.

Instead, it’s done by extreme sport athletes who are thoughtful, calculated and grounded individuals.

“While it does require a degree of athleticism, strength and bal-

JOSEPH RIOS ance, it requires a mental fortitude and practice of regulating anxiety, fear and the nervous system. It’s an escape from the daily (life) of work relationships, paying bills, etc.,”

said Fraser. “It’s what many describe as a flow state, that feeling of being totally present in the moment and really in the state of total connection with my surroundings.”

Like Fraser’s hobby, other extreme sports such as parkour, free soloing and snowboarding take a dedicated amount of training and practice to accomplish. At the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the “Extreme Sports: Beyond Human Limits” exhibit gives visitors a chance to learn about those sports and to explore the psychology, physicality and physiology of extreme sport athletes.

The exhibit is interactive and gives visitors plenty of ways to experience extreme sports like virtually jumping off a cliff, completing a course developed by the American Ninja Warriors at Ninja Nation, seeing what it’s like to be in charge of a wingsuit — and going into the

exhibit’s Immersion Room, where visitors can experience what it’s like to ride a mountain bike through a Utah desert, kayak on whitewater and more.

The temporary exhibit, which comes from the Canadian museum Science North, located near Sudbury in northern Ontario, includes a touch of Colorado spirit by featuring stories about Colorado athletes like Fraser; Maureen Beck, an ice and rock climber who was born without a left hand; and others.

“We have a really fascinating exhibit that tells stories of real people who are some of the world’s most amazing athletes. At the same time, there’s access for people of every age where they can come in here and find something to do that fits their physical and intellectual levels,” said Tim Blesse, teacher professional development coordinator at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. “It’s a great time out for the whole family.”

Other features of the exhibit include quizzes that help you see how gutsy you are to perform the activities extreme athletes do and videos that show visitors what is going through an athlete’s mind while they perform their extreme sport.

The exhibit is open until April 12, 2020 and is free with general museum admission.

“The most compelling thing is it has me think about challenge in new ways, how to incorporate more challenge and think about challenge in my everyday life. The exhibition just does a good job of exploring challenge and how to do it,” said Jodi Schoemer, director of experiences and partnerships at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. “By seeing it, I feel like a more empowered individual.”

Paintings, photos bring outdoors indoors ‘Near and Far’ show is celebration of scenery

One walks into the exhibit room at Bemis Library in Littleton and breathing immediately gets easier.

Blue skies, green trees, fresh air and sounds of nature surround a viewer of “Near and Far,” an exhibit of plein air paintings by Highlands Ranch artist Julia Grundmeier and photographic images by Carl Paulson, who says his experience as an Alaskan native for his first 18 years gives him a special view of nature.

Grundmeier is a retired teacher, after 21 years at Homestead Elementary School in the Cherry Creek School District. She started after her 1999 retirement with classes at the Art Students League of Denver, plus a number of painting workshops

with “wonderful instructors,” and loves to paint outdoors whenever she can, including traveling with friends to paint. “There’s nothing like being on the edge of the canyon,” she observed.

Note her “Highlands Ranch Evening” with an “amazing sky over the foothills.” She has fond memories of painting in Kawaneechi Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park, where a mama moose eyed her while she recorded its world.

And, look at: “Mabel’s Dovecoats” by Paulson, shot at Mabel Dodge Luhan’s home in New Mexico — or his “Delusions of Grandeur” — a young ram in a Western landscape … or “High Alert” — a mama bear and cubs, alarmed that a male bear is nearby, a threat to the young creatures.

Both artists are active members of the Littleton Fine Arts Guild, which operates the Depot Art Gallery. She is membership chairman, he is treasurer and both exhibit their artwork there. “People don’t know we’re here,”

Paulson, a native of Alaska, is a petroleum engineer, who learned that exhibit spots at the library are available and invited Grundmeier to join him for this exhibit.

He talks about going for a drive anywhere after work and finding new places to hike and capture with his camera, as well as trips back to Alaska, where he spent his first 18 years and returned to record many images of brown bears — relatives of

the grizzly.

Grundmeier loves to take her easel, palette and paints outside — “working on location helps me to capture the play of light, atmosphere and true color of a moment in time. Working outdoors can be challenging, but it is important to have a ‘sense of place.’”

She also enjoys painting near her home in Grand Lake.

“Near and Far” will remain at the library gallery through December. Visit it when returning or picking up books for a little vacation tour. Open during library hours.

Cherry Creek defeats Columbine in state championship game

What a difference a year can make.

Cherry Creek harped for a week prior to meeting Columbine in the Dec. 7 Class 5A state championship game at Empower Field at Mile High about how bad it felt after losing 24-14 to Valor Christian in the 2018 title game.

The Bruins took care of business this time and wrapped up a perfect 14-0 season with a 35-10 victory over Columbine in front of 12,789 fans on a Sunny afternoon.

“Last year was a tough one,” said Bruins’ junior wide receiver Chase Penry, who caught five passes, one of which went for a first-half touchdown.

“We talked about it all week. Last year we came here and we were happy to be here but this year we came here with a goal to win it.

“It’s hard to put into words, but it’s a great feeling. We worked so hard, and to come out and finished the season the way we did is amazing.”

It was Creek’s 10th overall state football title and the eighth for Dave Logan, who also has coached title teams at Arvada West, Chatfield and Mullen.

It was his second title at Creek.

“It never gets old to win,” Logan said. “I’m real proud of our group.”

Cherry Creek’s defense held the Rebels to 166 yards rushing and 199 yards of total offense.

Columbine came into the championship encounter averaging 39.5 points, 274 yards rushing and 353.2 yards of total offense a game.

“Columbine is a good football team and I thought we played excellent defense the entire day,” said Logan. “I thought our guys executed. We played

PAUL DISALVO with toughness, which you have to do against them, and we just made a lot of plays. Except for the one turnover, we played about as well as we could play.”

Junior defensive lineman Arden Walker, who had three tackles in the game, said the defense keyed on containing the Rebels’ rushing attack.

“The first thing was to stop the run game,” he said. “They were such a powerful team and had been throughout the playoffs and the season, and we were determined.”

Creek lost 36 seniors off its 2018 runner-up team but put together a championship team and another crown for Logan in his eighth season as Creek’s coach.

“I love coach Logan,” said junior

Myles Purchase, who scored twice for the Bruins against Columbine.

“He figures out new things every day in practice and he leaves us another target, and I’m glad to get another championship for him.”

Junior quarterback Julian Hammond III, who was the junior varsity quarterback a year ago, helped get the Bruins off to a quick start as Creek grabbed a 21-0 lead early in the third quarter.

“It feels crazy that we are actually state champions,” said Hammond, who completed 10 of 18 passes for 96 yards and a TD. “We felt that early in the game they were going to try to stop our run game because lately we’ve been able to run on teams, so we came out ready to pass. As a team we played

great. Our defense played great, they locked up on defense when we needed it and our offense played good.”

Jayle Stacks, a senior who has committed to play at the University of Colorado, rushed for 136 yards and one touchdown and James Walker II gained 66 yards and scored once.

Senior linebacker Delonte Dickey led the Bruins with 10 tackles as Creek limited the Rebels success except for an 80-yard scoring drive in the third quarter with Tanner Hollens scoring on a 7-yard run. Columbine added a 35-yard field goal by Adam Tasei to trim the defict to 21-10 with 10:05 still to play in the game.

Creek responded with a 63 yard TD drive and Purchase’s interception return to wrap up the scoring.

For some, hoops season must wait

he high school basketball season tipped off Dec. 2, when schools were allowed to play their first games.

Cherry Creek boys coach Kent Dertinger will have to wait a little longer OVERTIME to see how this season’s team will come together.

The Bruins opened the season Dec. 5-7 with games against Grand Junction Central, Fruita Monument and Grand Junction in the WarJim Benton rior Challenge.

However, five basketball players missed the tournament because they

played for the victorious Bruins in the state championship football game on Dec. 7 against Columbine.

Quarterback Julian Hammond III, defensive back and kick returner Myles Purchase, tight end Gunnar Helm and defensive ends Arden Walker and Delonte Dickey also play basketball.

Hammond, whose grandfather was former ABA Denver Rockets player Julian Hammond, and Purchase led the team last season as sophomores in scoring with 20.5 and 13.0 point-pergame averages.

“Myles and Julian are always handling the basketball even during the football season,” Dertinger said. “It will take them some time to get their basketball legs and wind but we will ease them in.

“I expect that they will play Dec. 12 at Boulder for us, but I will have to manage their time.”

Dertinger pointed out there will be two Hammonds playing this season.

“Interesting side note is Julian’s little brother Christian is a ninthgrader and made the trip to Grand Junction, and he certainly helped us at the varsity level,” the coach said.

National competitors Colorado state 5A cross country champions Cole Sprout, a senior at Valor Christian, and Riley Stewart, a sophomore who goes to Cherry Creek, won individual titles at the NXR Southwest Regionals Nov. 23 in Casa Grande, Arizona.

A team of girls from Valor Christian surprised the field of top 25 teams in the country and finished second to qualify to compete along with 22 other teams for the national title in the Nike Cross Nationals.

The individuals on the Valor girls team who competed in the national meet were Lanie Szuch, Taylor Whitfield, Isabella Prosceno, Ashley Jones, Reese Dragovich and Bri Teegarden.

Vista Nation’s boys team was second in the Arizona regional to earn its ticket to compete for the national team championship.

Athletes on the Vista Nation boys team were Harrison Witt, Davis Helmerich, Jack O’Sullivan, Seth Rouse, Kyle Boe, Jayden Nats and Colin Mooney.

Honor roll Each week, performances of south metro athletes and teams will be highlighted. This week’s performances were selected from games, matches and meets between Dec. 2 and Dec. 5.

Heritage used a big third quarter, outscoring rival Littleton 25-12, and went on to record a 64-55 boys basketball victory on Dec. 2. Senior Kai Bertram scored 26 points to lead Littleton.

Highlands Ranch overcame a seven-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter and posted a 70-64 boys basketball win over Smoky Hill on Dec. 3.

Senior Amy Holland scored 14 points to help Mountain Vista earn a 58-38 girls basketball win over Rampart on Dec. 4.
