Littleton has a new mayor — elected by the new city council’s first split vote.

Councilmember Jerry Valdes, who represents District 2 and was recently reelected to his third and final term on city council, was selected by his fellow councilmembers to serve as mayor in a 4-3 vote, facing off against newly elected at-large councilmember Scott Melin.

Councilmember Pat Driscoll nominated Valdes Valdes for mayor at the Nov. 19 council meeting, moments after new councilmembers Melin, Pam Grove and Kelly Milliman were sworn in.

Councilmember Karina Elrod then nominated Melin.

In prepared remarks, Melin lobbied for election to the mayor position.

Hobby shop is home for hands-on activities HobbyTown hopes to draw fanatics from new generation of modelers

All the cool kids are building models these days, and Littleton’s newest hobby shop is here to help.

Old-school hobbies — and some new ones — are on the rise, said Corey Bosworth, the owner of HobbyTown Littleton at 7981 South Broadway.

“Parents are realizing phones and screens aren’t good for their kids or society, and kids are realizing how cool some of this stuff is,” said Bosworth, who also owns a HobbyTown store in Parker.

After a couple decades of decline and closures thanks to online shopping, hobby shops are coming back as a hub for tournaments and clubs, Bosworth said.

Tabletop games like Warhammer, in which players do battle with hand-painted, hand-built miniature armies, robot models called Gunpla, and a new generation of roleplaying games are drawing fanatics, Bosworth said. He plans to turn the back of HobbyTown Littleton into an event space for tournaments.

Hobby shops are coming back after years of decline, said Corey Bosworth, owner of HobbyTown Littleton.

“RC car technology has advanced dramatically in recent years,” Bos-

worth said.

Some of the new models can travel up to 70 mph, he said, while others are designed to clamber up rocks.

Also in the shop: all the classics, like model airplanes, pinewood derby car supplies, model trains, RC aircraft, kites, science kits, balsa wood gliders and rock tumblers.

Bosworth said the shop will be competitive with online shopping, as many of the shop’s dealers have set prices that are the same online or in a shop.

Further, he said, buyers relish the opportunity to talk to a knowledgeable source.

“We live, eat and breathe this stuff,” Bosworth said. “If you want a high-end RC car, Amazon’s not going to walk you through the pros and cons of different models.”

HobbyTown is a welcome addition to Littleton, said David Ortiz, who found the shop for the first time on Nov. 19, and is excited to attend Warhammer games at the shop.

“You spend about as much time just interacting with people as you do playing,” Ortiz said. “It’s a cool way to meet friends. And the game itself feels so much more real, because you can hold the pieces in your hands.”

Ortiz used to frequent Bonnie Brae Hobbies in Englewood until it closed in 2015, he said, and he’s cautiously optimistic about the future of hobby shops.

“There’s always more to collect, and more games to play,” Ortiz said.

Love Inc. moves into new home Charity network says bigger space means bigger opportunities to help

Love Inc., the charity network that helped dozens of seniors in the aftermath of last year’s Windermere apartment fire, has a new home.

The group, which offers assistance to people going through hardship, hopes its new building at Littleton Boulevard and Bannock Street will enable it to expand offerings even more.

“This gives us the room to explore more of what God is calling us to do,” said Kathryn Roy, Love Inc.’s executive director. “And I hope it shows that we’re invested in this community.”

At more than 4,700 square feet, the building at 5745 South Bannock St. is more than twice as large as Love Inc.’s old home at 5854 South Datura St. The new building allows for a lot more space to hold private conversations with clients needing help, Roy said.

The building also allows more office space to manage Love Inc. offerings, like the Impact program, Roy said.

Impact is a free series of courses available to local residents on building healthy relationships, money management, parenting and nutrition.

Love Inc. bought the building in February from South Metro Housing Options, or SMHO, Littleton’s public housing authority, which has used it as a headquarters since 2007. Love Inc. paid $780,000 for the building, according to county records.

SMHO, meanwhile, has moved into a two-story building at 5808 South Rapp Street, said executive director Corey

Reitz. SMHO paid close to $3.5 million for the space, according to county records. The agency is using only one of the building’s nearly two-dozen office suites, Reitz said, and will rent out the rest.

“Our long-term goal is to rent the other offices out to other nonprofits and service agencies,” Reitz said. “We want to make a one-stop shop for people needing help. We want a network

that works together efficiently.”

SMHO also owns Love Inc.’s old home on Datura Street. Reitz said he’s not sure what the agency will do with the building yet, but hopes to find another tenant that fits their mission to serve the down-and-out.

New homes coming near Chatfield Reservoir About 1,100 houses are expected at full buildout

Shea Homes has begun construction on a new development including about 1,100 home plots near Chatfield Reservoir.

The development, called Solstice, sits on about 380 acres and will include more than 130 acres of open space, said Cheryl Haflich, a spokeswoman with Shea Homes.

“Shea is excited to be bringing this community to life and just thrilled with our location,” Haflich said.

The site lies east of the southernmost stretch of Chatfield Reservoir, on Roxborough Park Road north of Titan Road. While it will take several years to build out the property, the first three collections, including two-story homes, should be available by April 2020, Haflich said. These will comprise about half the homes of the development.

Shea Homes plans to add two ranchstyle collections of homes within another year.

“We want people to feel like they can spend their entire weekend here,” Haflich said.

Once built out, the community will also include 50 acres of parks. The largest one, called Solstice Linear Park, will cover about 37 acres.

It will include both sides of the High Line Canal, which cuts through the

middle of the development.

“Our vision for this park is for it to literally and figuratively be recognized as the centerpiece of this community’s parks and open space network,” Haflich said in an email.

Another smaller park will be called Holiday Park.

“If somebody needs to clean out their house because they need to move, if they want to find a better job, if they need a bus pass or help getting their car repaired, we can help them figure that out,” Roy said.

The program drew praise last year after mobilizing to help dozens of seniors left suddenly homeless after a fire at the Windermere apartment tower across the street from their Datura Street headquarters. Roy and her

staff trained dozens of “navigators” who helped displaced seniors navigate the difficult journey of finding new homes.

Love Inc. also assisted residents displaced after a similar devastating fire at the same complex in 2016.

Former Mayor Debbie Brinkman, who cut the ribbon on Love Inc.’s new home in one of her last acts before leaving office, said the group is a vital support for Littleton.

“They were there before we even knew we needed them,” Brinkman said. “They’ve been such a blessing.”

Currently, Roy said, Love Inc. consists of 275 volunteers working with hundreds of families. The group also manages the Renewed Treasures resale shop at 6512 South Broadway, with proceeds from the store supporting the group’s mission.

Roy said she’s excited for the group’s future in its new home.

“By God’s grace, as we work together, we’ll keep making positive change,” she said.

Former Arapahoe High student talks about higher ed, gives advice to current students Setting out I go to Lincoln Tech currently, and I am in year one of school for welding.

There’s a certain rush I get when I’m 8,000 degrees between two pieces of metal, and the possibilities of what I can create are endless. When it comes to permanently fusing metal, you get a certain sense of pride in the work you’ve done as if you’ve put a piece of yourself into your work.

Shaping own future The market and demand for bluecollar jobs is very high at the moment, and I’ve always had a very deep connection to metal as a material of the Earth. I love to fabricate and be self-reliant — it’s very rewarding when you can step back and look at a dependable piece that you created all by yourself. It was a big decision for me on whether or not to go to a regular college, but I wanted to do something I could always fall back on. Besides, college isn’t going anywhere.

When it comes to welding engineer-

ing, the options are limitless. When I graduate, I intend on doing some light contracting jobs on the side while I start a small local welding and fabrication business. The end goal is to have a successful business on the side while I pursue other business ventures.

Coming from Arapahoe High I’ve always felt as a sort of an outcast when it came to being social, and high school was a great steppingstone in how to learn about meeting the right people that can really influence your life. My mom always told me, ‘If you can find one genuine friend in this life, you’re extremely lucky because they’re in high demand.’ That genuine person for me was Stephen, and I will always be grateful for a friend I can call my brother.

High school for me had plenty of ups and downs, but at the end of the day, no matter what the experience, it’s how you come back from it and learn that will make you who you are.

Advice to Arapahoe seniors Don’t rush! The world puts so much pressure on us to make life-changing decisions at such a young age. If you have a dedicated plan, always be prepared for it to change — you never know who will come into your life and change the course of everything!

Grove made her pitch, touting her years of experience on the city’s Historical Preservation Board: “During that time, I became very familiar with how to work with the city and citizens, the needs and issues of stakeholders of our community, including how the business community and property owners feel about Littleton,” Grove said. “I’ve navigated some very difficult waters through that process.”

Melin stood by his earlier remarks.

Melin won out, drawing yes votes from councilmembers Driscoll, Elrod, Milliman and himself.

Valdes, 63, is the council’s most senior member. Elrod’s nomination of Melin for mayor is not the first time a fellow councilmember has endorsed another candidate over Valdes.

In October, councilmember Fey sent out an email — from her personal account — endorsing a slate of candidates, including Jane Ozga, one of two challengers for Valdes’ seat.

In prepared remarks of his own, Valdes responded: “The learning curve as Melin a new city council (member) is very steep,” Valdes said, in part. “Like any new job, it takes time to settle into the position…

I’ve had the honor of being elected three times to serve the citizens of District 2 and the city of Littleton. I have the knowledge, experience and time to represent the city… Now that I’m retired, I have the time to commit to the mayor position 100%.”

Valdes drew yes votes from councilmembers Driscoll, Carol Fey, Grove and himself. Councilmembers Elrod, Melin and Milliman voted against him.

But the split votes weren’t over. The council’s next action, to elect a mayor pro tem, drew another division.

Milliman nominated Melin for the pro tem position, while Valdes nomi-

Community members are invited to spend a “Night in Monte Carlo” to help support the scholarship programs of 303 Volleyball Academy and its sister club Colorado Alliance.

The 21-plus fundraising event is Saturday, Nov. 30, from 6-10 p.m. at 82 Inverness Drive East, Unit A2. The cost is $20, which includes $200 in fake gambling chips to use at roulette, craps, poker and Black Jack tables. Additional chips are available for a donation.

5 questions for the South Metro Denver Realtor Association Group has new home in Centennial after move from Littleton

When a local real estate organization chose its new home, it was — of course — all about location.

“Being in Centennial makes things easier for many of our Realtor members when they are out doing business and need to meet with clients in (the) central area,” said Heather Hankins, chair of the board of directors for the South Metro Denver Realtor Association.

The association held a ribboncutting ceremony Oct. 11 to celebrate its new headquarters near East Arapahoe Road and South Peoria Street.

Its move away from its previous spot in Littleton — near South Broadway and Mineral Avenue — was largely based on where its members were clustered.

“Most members’ offices were located in the 80111 ZIP code,” said Hankins, referring to the central Centennial and Denver Tech Center areas.

For those who aren’t familiar with the association, here are Hankins’ answers about what SMDRA does and what brought the group to call Centennial home. The new headquarters is located at 6436 S. Racine Circle.

What difference does SMDRA make for Realtors and the local economy?

For Realtor members: Education on market trends, marketing, contracts, ethics and professional standards just to name a few.

Realtors advocate for homeownership and (legislation) that is beneficial to homeownership and home affordability issues. (We provide) support within their business and on how they can

be better business owners. (We also offer) community outreach through charitable giving and volunteer days within the community.

Our Realtors are knowledgeable on changes in the marketplace and those effects on the local economy. Changes in politics can change the local economy, and our Realtors are educated (on) those changes. Realtors typically know about new commerce coming to the state and the local area, which can affect the economy.

Geography, building space for over 4,000 members with enough parking for members and our building tenants, easy access to major highways and local businesses close to the building.

Did Centennial’s economy factor into the choice?

hildren sang Christmas carols and vendors’ booths lined the way at a garden center just outside of suburban neighborhoods in west Centennial.

It was all part of the first Holiday Art Market at Big Tool Box and Highlands Garden Center at 8080 S. Holly St. Artist Tania Rustage, who lives in the Lone Tree-Highlands Ranch area, created the event with a fellow artist.

It took place the first three days of November, and Rustage said she was

impressed with the turnout.

“Everyone’s been happy,” Rustage said on the market’s first day. “A lot of people have said they needed something like this on this side of town.”

Amid the fabrics, ornaments and other works on display, Dawn Swanbom’s stood out: scented lotion she makes from goat milk.

“Once they sample the product, they’re pretty amazed,” Swanbom, 58, said about customers’ reactions. The Greeley-area resident has farmed goat milk for about seven years, she said.

“I always joke that my philosophy is to get people hooked on it,” Swanbom said.

Lights line the way as the sun went down on a chilly November day at the Holiday Art Market, where dozens still browsed despite the temperature.

Tale of innovative artwork follows fascinating thread

W

hen someone mentions “quilt,” what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

Your aunt? Your grandmother? Your grandmother’s aunt?

Me? I think of the young woman who cleans my teeth.

Lindsay Thompson is a dental hygienist at Highlands Ranch Smiles on University Boulevard.

She has been cleaning my teeth four times a year for a long time, and we have taken that frequency to get to know each other better.

One day she said, “I quilt.”

I was speechless. It wasn’t because I couldn’t think of anything to say. I couldn’t talk because Lindsay’s ultrasonic scaler was in my mouth.

When she said she quilts, I remem-

Now, thanks to Lindsay, that has changed.

As she began to tell me how she became a quilter, I heard her say things that were very familiar to me, and to all artists and artisans.

There is a progression from an interest to an inquiry to a venture to an adventure, and each step brings you closer to something unexpectedly meaningful and fulfilling.

When Lindsay was on a trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, with her mother-in-law (a longtime quilter), she

bered what I already knew about the subject, and I realized it wasn’t much.

QUIET There’s a quilting DESPERATION scene in “Witness,” the film that stars Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis.

There’s the quilt my mother and father bought for me when they lived in Tennessee for a couple of years. They would see beautiful Craig Marshall examples hanging Smith on clotheslines in rural backyards, with a handwritten “For Sale” sign nearby.

And that’s how it began.

Now, six years later, Lindsay is the president of the Front Range Modern Quilt Guilt. The key word there is “modern.”

Quilts, historically, were considered bedding. Now they are often thought of as works of art, and are displayed on walls, like paintings. Like my paintings.

And that gave me an idea.

I asked Lindsay if she would be interested in collaborating. She said yes.

any times, it seems like just the opposite of this headline, doesn’t it? How often do we find ourselves shouting out about our disappointment and then only quietly murmuring about our gratitude?

WINNING Although Elton John sang, “Sorry WORDS seems to be the hardest word,” for some of us, saying “Thanks” seems to be the hardest word.

Sometimes it feels like we are stacking up our frustrations, building up our resentment and Michael Norton justifying our case for anger just so we can unload on the first person or company that doesn’t give us exactly what we want and when we want it. Our immediate gratification thermometer bottoms out as we are blinded by a perceived need for something that we feel like we must have and have right now.

Think about it for a just a moment, has that ever been you? It certainly has been me, and I am never proud of myself when it happens. And yet when someone does finally get us what

we thought we needed or wanted, we can barely utter the words, “Thank you.”

It is most often a mumbled murmur and under our breath, “Thanks.” Why does that happen? Is it because we want to hold onto our anger and disappointment for a little while longer like it’s a trophy of some kind? Or do we let our pride get in the way and feel like we need to stand our ground, drawing a line in the sand between our expectations and our appreciation?

There is no doubt that we will read several columns about gratitude and thanksgiving this week, after all, it is the week of Thanksgiving. And we will see hundreds of posts and memes on social media and on our phones celebrating the spirit of gratitude and thanksgiving.

We will gather together as families and friends and share what we appreciate the most as we eat, drink, play, and pray together. We will be reminded of all that we have to be grateful for in our lives. This week our sense of gratitude and our awareness of appreciation will be heightened.

It’s hard to be grateful right now, and that’s OK

n the United States, this is the alleged month of gratitude (not for the Indigenous, of course). We are supposed to have an “attitude of gratitude” and all will be well. At least that’s how I was raised. If you claim it, it shall be.

Most of us Americans are taught we should just pick ourselves up by the bootstraps even if we don’t have boots.

But here it is, the month of November, yet I feel the heavy weight of unparalleled political strife, juggling school and financial needs, and now, a sudden suicide in our family. How can I rise above all this to be thankful? Well, the truth is I just can’t right now, and that’s all right.

I have discovered in my chaplaincy training that there are times when we just need to sit in the muck and feel whatever it is that we’re feeling. I couldn’t possibly say to a grieving parent who had just lost their child, “It’s

off with a large area for her to quilt, and said, “Do something.”

When she showed me what she had done, I was stunned — and I think she was too.

Lindsay included one traditional quilting element she called an “Ohio Star,” but everything else was as creatively placed as swatches of color in a Kandinsky painting.

I then had the canvas stretched at Meininger, and I painted into the areas opposite hers, using colors that either matched or complemented her

on Thanksgiving, we will typically only murmur thoughts about our disappointments, and instead we will shout out our feelings of love and gratitude.

In those moments of shouting out our gratitude, something happens inside of us. We begin to feel better, our frustration levels go down, our wall of resentment begins to crumble, and our anger is abated as we see, hear, think, and feel gratitude all around us.

It’s been said that gratitude is one of the healthiest and strongest of all human emotions. And this is not just when we are shown appreciation, but also when we share our own gratitude and appreciation with, and for, others in our lives that we begin to feel better in so many ways.

It’s kind of like going to the gym or maybe taking a walk. At first, we may not really be in the mood to go, but as soon as we start, as soon as we get moving, we immediately begin to

all right. Just be grateful that …” That would be harmful on so many levels.

Sometimes, we need to feel the horror, sadness, anger and GUEST be fully present in it.

COLUMN As chaplains, it is our role to allow people who are experiencing trauma or grief to feel whatever emotion pops up for them and just “sit with” them while they’re going through it. Often, there is no need for words, just a “presLinda Newell ence of ministry” in silence can be very comforting.

We are also taught that by trying to avoid pain now, we are just circumventing what needs to happen and actually slowing down the healing process.

By telling people to “buck up and be

grateful,” we are throwing them off the rails of their own natural emotional processes. And sometimes, they may never get back on track and move on from their pain.

As with any emotion, we cannot force gratitude, no matter what the date is, and we would do better to recognize that in our relationships. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all of us could learn to do this with each other? Imagine how different we would feel in our home, workplace, or community if we could “just be” ourselves without interference, objection, or distraction? Our emotions, any of them, can’t harm ourselves or others. It’s the actions that can, and we need to remember that, of course. But imagine if we had the comfortability and respect from others to feel whatever we are feeling in the moment and able to express it (healthily), whatever it is.

We are under so much pressure in

our nation to always look and feel our best, be on top of our game, and forever be grateful. Well sometimes, I just feel sad or mad or whatever, and I don’t feel like putting on my boots at all. Sometimes, I just want to cry, yell, or stare out into space and know I have the room to do that physically and emotionally.

So perhaps in this declared month of gratitude, we can allow ourselves and others not to feel thankfulness and to feel whatever emotions bubble up.

Ironically, from that, genuine gratitude can come.

Some of us are very effective in sharing our gratitude verbally while others do a good job of expressing their appreciation through writing in the form of an email, a text or a card.

Then there are those who know how to give a great hug or handshake when sharing their gratitude. And if you are the kind of person who loves to give or receive a hug, just remember that HUG stands for Having Unbelievable Gratitude, so give those out as often as possible.

Daylight-saving time shift, dwindling sunlight put mind, body though changes

bout one in every three American adults already doesn’t get enough sleep, and the end of daylightsaving time can throw another wrench into the equation — even though the day “gains” an hour in the fall rather than losing one toward the spring.

“Either way, biologically, you’re changing your circadian rhythm, the biological clock we live by,” said Danielle Hicks, a psychology instructor at Front Range Community College in Westminster.

The ensuing sleep disruption can come with a host of hurdles: mood problems, struggles with focusing, less precise control of movements and, of course, throwing off the sleep-wake cycle.

People also may be more emotional or may not receive information as well as usual, Hicks said.

“It feels as if you’re jet-lagged,” Hicks said. “I would ask yourself, if you’re jet-lagged, are you going to work on heavy machinery? Are you going to lead a major meeting?

Are you going to make major decisions?”

Daylight-saving time ended in the wee morning hours Nov. 3, but the days are still approaching the “shortest day of the year” in late December — when daytime is shortest and night is longest — at the winter solstice, marking the start of that season.

That’s important for sleep because when the day gets dim, the body increases its amount of a hormone called melatonin, which helps induce sleep. After the fall time change, light in the morning — earlier than the biological clock expects it — can put a damper on that extra hour of sleep because it reduces melatonin, according to Hicks.

enerally, people experience more difficulty “in the spring forward than the falling back” from daylight-saving time, said Kristy Dykema, a psychology professor at Front Range Community College. “But, that said, it has effects.”

Adjusting to the fall time change can take two or three weeks as the body’s circadian rhythms change, said Allison Hagood, a psychology professor at Arapahoe Community College. Those who have symptoms past that point could be diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder, she added, a type of depression some people experience this time of year.

Some people may bounce back within several days, but the impact may be greater if a person is already sleep-deprived or more susceptible to mental health issues, according to Dykema.

Those who have seasonal affective disorder symptoms — loss of interest in things a person used to enjoy, sadness, feeling sluggish, social withdrawal and even having thoughts of death or suicide, among others — should take a proactive approach in their routines, Dykema said.

“When you get up in the morning, expose yourself to some light — that helps to wake up your system,” Dykema said. Exercise releases chemicals that can ease depressive symptoms, she added.

For those without a history of mental health challenges, exercise is still a good way to fight drowsiness, Dykema said. Avoiding overcaffeinating in the evening and trying not to nap will help people adjust better too, she said.

And for those who aren’t back to normal after several weeks, a professional opinion might be the best way forward. Stigma still surrounds depression, but there’s no shame in reaching out for help, Hagood said.

“As a psychologist, I always feel if a person is struggling, (remember) not to do it alone,” Dykema said. “There are a lot of community resources out there to seek support and help from a professional.”

Deeper effects As some adjust to the time change, they may not be out of the woods just yet. They may still be feeling the effects of seasonal affective disorder, a type of depression.

“For people (for) whom the adjustment in the first couple weeks is not sufficient to alleviate the symptoms, the symptoms can continue to be a challenge as the sunlight continues to decrease,”

The disorder can include loss of interest in things a person used to enjoy, boredom, apathy and sadness, according to Hagood. Feeling sluggish, social withdrawal and even having thoughts of death or suicide also could be symptoms.

“People who don’t have a diagnosis can experience those symptoms to a lesser extent,” Hagood said.

“Not across the board, but there is an increased likelihood. Most people who don’t have a diagnosis will see the (symptoms decrease) within a few weeks.”

‘More regular routine’ Acknowledging that the time change can present hurdles is the first step to adjusting, Hagood said.

“Recognize that these changes in one’s self are possible,” Hagood said. “Our society is built on this idea of continuing through no matter what — continuing to work and be in one’s life the same way no matter what happens.”

At the start, tweaking a sleep schedule by 15 minutes each day leading up to the time change can help, Hicks said. That same strategy can work for kids, she added.

Sticking with predictable patterns, such as eating around the same time each day, also can help adjust, Hicks said.

Teenagers need roughly the same amount of sleep as adults but fall asleep later, Hagood said, and the time shift can hit them hard because they’re already sleepdeprived.

“My first suggestion is to work on having a more regular routine, even on the weekends,” Hicks said for teens. “Because they want to sleep in on the weekends, but that’s confusing their bodies with the increase and decrease in melatonin.”

Keep pets in mind Even furry friends can be thrown by the time change as their meals or walks come at different times.

“The interesting thing about pets is that without humans, they don’t have a clock — they just eat when they eat and sleep when they sleep.

They have their own internal routine,” Hicks said.

As with people, gradually shifting pets’ activities leading up to the time change can do the trick to help them adjust, Hicks said.

Local actor/director/playwright Christopher Willard has, like many of us, loved Frank Capra’s 1946 fantasy film, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” as it screens each holiday season.

The warm, charming tale of George Bailey, his guardian angel Clarence Odbody and Bailey’s love for Bedford Falls, his hometown, as well as for Mary Hatch, is part of our cultural fabric.

“I’ve been carrying that script around in my pocket,” said Willard, who previously developed a very funny one-man show, “Fully Committed.”

He arrived in Colorado in 1996 and has been prominent in the theater community since.

He has directed at Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center, spent a number of years at Arvada Center, developing

In the spring, he will direct a production of Neil Simon’s delight, “The Odd Couple,” at Parker’s PACE Center.

And for one night only, he will present his one-man reimagining of the Capra classic, which he has titled

“This Wonderful Life,” for familes (he suggests 6 and over) at the historic Schoolhouse in Parker at 7 p.m. on Dec. 18. His production company is called Alliance Stage.

“In my humble estimation, the world needs the story of George Bailey and Bedford Falls now more than ever … I’ll be running sound and light from the stage,” he says of the production, which will also appear at several metro-area churches and at Mizel Arts Center. “This production is about a guy who loves ‘This Wonderful Life’ so much, he wants to do it all!”

We chatted a bit about his development of what he calls: “a trunk show — it fits in the back of my SUV and is ready in half an hour.”

I was reminded of the traveling players who are often depicted in Shakespeare’s plays, carrying their art from town to town … We will look forward to this production and future opportunities to appreciate Willard’s talents.

Young musicians in the south Denver metro area can now stay closer to home while pursuing their art with the launch of the Rocky Mountain Youth Orchestra.

Children in the area typically travel to downtown Denver or Arvada to participate in such programs. Rocky Mountain Youth Orchestra will perform at Cornerstone Church in Lone Tree, with additional performances around the area. Its first concert is Dec. 3.

Rocky Mountain Youth Orchestra will emphasize creating multisensory musical experiences to classical music concert-goers, said a news release. It is a continuation of what was formerly Valor Symphonics, formed in 2011. While the passions remain the same — educating today’s musical youth in a creative,

multi-artistic way — Rocky Mountain Youth Orchestra will execute it a little differently, the release said.

The goal of Rocky Mountain Youth Orchestra is to train and inspire students to be independent and confident musicians who can enjoy and participate in music, alone and with others in their community, throughout their lives, the release said.

Young musicians will study and perform traditional and modern orchestral masterpieces in connection with the broader context of other arts and culture.

It will be headed by local musician David Rutherford, who has undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Northern Colorado. He has been an educator and orchestral director for more than 20 years, and was the morning host on CPR’s KVOD (90.1 FM) for many years.

hile indicators point to a strong economy with unemployment rates low and spending high, local experts warn that 2019 might be the year to exercise caution in holiday spending.

The National Retail Federation (NRF) expects holiday retail sales during November and December to increase between 3.8 percent and 4.2 percent from last year. Spending is expected to be between $727.9 billion and $730.7 billion.

According to the NRF, the average Ameri-

can will spend $700 on gifts in 2019, totaling more than $465 billion nationally.

However, local economist Meredith Moon, of the state’s Legislative Council, said despite national predictions, it is possible that retail sales decline slightly this holiday season, citing trade tensions with China as a factor to consider in consumer confidence.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s Advance Monthly Retail Trade Report for September 2019 was just published, and U.S. retail sales decreased 0.3 percent in September monthover-month.

“This this is the first month retail sales

have fallen since February,” Moon said.

“However, this data is subject to revisions that may reverse this fall in sales. The tariffs scheduled to go into effect on Dec.15, which cover mainly consumer goods, should not significantly affect holiday shopping prices, since retailers typically increase their inventories months in advance of the holiday season.”

Some advice for sending holiday greetings

It’s that holiday-card time of year again.

But before you open up the address book or spreadsheet, read up on some modern etiquette for addressing those to whom you’re sending your jolly good tidings.

Holiday cards, particularly Christmas cards, are big business. Leading greeting-card maker Hallmark estimates 1.3 billion Christmas cards are sent annually in the United States.

Every holiday season, I receive a handful of cards addressed to “Mr. and Mrs. Mark Peacock’’ — my husband’s name. And every year I’m flummoxed that some in our circle haven’t noticed that Mark and I have never shared a last name.

Eighteen years into her marriage, Karen Greco, a publicist and writer who lives in Rhode Island and New York City, says friends and family are finally starting to use her surname.

“I just kept using my own name when sending thank you cards or other correspondence,’’ she says.

“Sometimes I made a point to say, ‘I kept my name,’ like, to my dad.’’

If you don’t know, ask Experts agree that the first step in addressing holiday cards is to know your recipients’ preferences.

Are they married with separate or hyphenated names? Was a new, blended name created? Do their children have different surnames?

“If you ever have a question, just send the person a text or email and ask,” says Jodi R.R. Smith, owner of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting in Marblehead, Massachusetts. “You should know if a name is hyphenated, and which name comes first, which comes second.’’

You can use a less formal approach by writing one family member’s last name, usually the person you know best, and addressing the card to the “family’’: “The Jones family,’’ for instance, or “Ralph Jones and family.’’

A new courtesy title, Mx. (pronounced “Mix’’), has been embraced by some transgender, nonbinary or gender-neutral people as an alternative to Mr. or Ms. It was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2015, but the etiquette is evolving, and Smith recommends tailoring “Mx.’’ to the

as “kind of old school,’’ was surprised at the correction.

“But I think he was also happy about it,’’ she says. “He totally got it, and he never even asked why. Just said OK and addressed me correctly.’’

Etiquette is based on historical precedent, but also follows cultural shifts, of which there have been many in recent decades. In other words, “Mr. and Mrs. Husband’s Name’’ doesn’t cut it anymore for a lot of people.

“To address people that way is pretty outdated,’’ says Arden Clise, who owns Seattle-based Clise Eti-

“I actually recommend contacting them individually and asking how they prefer to be addressed formally,’’ she says.

Traditionally, the man’s name came first in addressing a married couple, but now the opposite is proper, Smith says. Address a card with the woman’s name first. And for any married couple, she says, etiquette requires an “and’’ between the two names.

Cut senders some slack There are lots of new rules; understand when it is and isn’t appropriate to be an etiquette cop.

“Don’t bother trying to change your elderly relative,’’ Smith says. “But if your cousin doesn’t know your name, send him a gentle email after the holidays are over and suggest he make the change in his master list.’’ Close the email with a positive note or two, she says, something like “Can’t wait to see you at the family reunion next fall!’’

And don’t let address worries scare you off from sending these annual greetings. People love getting cards in the mail.

Hallmark’s website says nearly 75 percent of consumers who send holiday cards do so because they know it feels good to receive them.

“When in doubt, always send the card,’’ Smith says. “This is such a wonderful way to keep in touch with family and friends.’’

Cholesterol levels dropping, but many still need care Diabetics in particular are urged to take steps to avoid heart risk

LDL cholesterol — dropped 21 points over the study period, the researchers reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. It was declining even before the 2013 guidelines but continued to inch down afterward.

Total cholesterol levels and another fat known as triglycerides likewise decreased.

“These are surprisingly impressive results” that together predict a 15% to 20% reduction in risk of heart attacks and strokes, said Dr. Michael Miller, preventive cardiology chief at the University of Maryland Medical Center, who wasn’t involved with the study.

Moreover, there was an uptick in statin use by people with diabetes over the study period, from less than half to over 60% getting one. Diabetics are particularly vulnerable to heart attacks and tend to have poorer outcomes.

“It’s very important for those with a diagnosis of diabetes to not get that first heart attack,” said Dr. Neil J. Stone, a cardiologist at Northwestern University. He led development of the 2013 guidelines from the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association, and he co-authored an update last year.

Arora cautioned that other high-risk groups haven’t seen an increase in treatment — and that still too many Americans don’t know if they have a cholesterol problem.

The advice for consumers? If you haven’t had a cholesterol check recently, get one, Miller said.

Testing is easier than ever, as fasting no longer is required. Especially if you have additional risk factors, high cholesterol should spark a frank conversation about diet, exercise and the pros and cons of statins.

Some good health news: Americans’ cholesterol levels are dropping, and more people at especially high risk are getting treatment.

Researchers say the report, released Nov. 11, suggests a controversial change in recommendations for cholesterol treatment may be starting to pay off.

“It is very heartening,” said Dr. Pankaj Arora of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, who led the study. “But there is more to do.”

Heart disease is the world’s leading killer and high cholesterol is a key risk factor — but not the only one.

Doctors long treated patients based mostly on their level of so-called “bad” cholesterol, whether they had other risks or not. In 2013, national guidelines urged them instead to focus more on people’s overall heart risk, by taking into account age, blood pressure, diabetes and other factors. Those at highest risk would get the most benefit from cholesterol-lowering statin drugs.

The Alabama team examined records from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that tracked cholesterol information from more than 32,000 adults between 2005 and 2016.

pionship at Pinehurst Country Club on Oct. 8 after carding a final round 4-under-par 66 for a two-round total of 143 to win by five strokes. He also helped Arapahoe rally to capture the second-place trophy.

Pals also saved his best for last as he came from behind with a 2-underpar 70 on the Air Force Academy’s blue course to force a playoff for the Class 3A individual state crown. He and Walker Franklin of Prospect Ridge finished at 144 but Pals won the playoff and the state title with a par on the first extra hole.

He also played a key role in Lutheran capturing the state team title.

Kates and Pals were named the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Co-Golfers of the Year.

“Will worked very hard,” said Arapahoe coach Harry Buckner.

“All the practice during the season on his chipping and putting sure paid off. During our practice rounds he figured out where he had to be on the greens to have chances at birdies.

Morgan Schilling, a junior at Regis Jesuit, is the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Boys Tennis Player of the Year.

Schilling lost only one set all season and completed a 21-0 campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Fairview’s

Luke Silverman in the No. 1 singles championship match at the boys state tournament, which was held Oct. 18-19 at the Gates Tennis Center.

He lost the first two games against Silverman but rallied to win easily and went a step further this year after losing in the finals of the 2018 tournament to Chatfield’s Christian Holmes, 7-5, 7-5.

“There’s no doubt he was dominant in that match,” said Regis coach Laura Jones. “He was 21-0 for the year. Nobody beat him.

It’s the day of turkey trots, Macy’s Thanksgiving parade, football, feasting and family.

It is obviously a time for families and friends who are like family to get together, offer thanks, enjoy each other’s company and enjoy a tasty meal.

I always take time during Thanksgiving to offer thanks for the little things that are often overlooked, for instance like hugs and that person who always greets you with a pleasant welcoming.

And I always try OVERTIME to offer things on the local high school sports scene that I am thankful for but many of these ideas haven’t changed.

I am appreciative of warm weather for late fall football games, being inside Jim Benton for all winter sports events, no shootouts in the state championship soccer games, the first look at a field hockey match, the squeaky sound of basketball shoes on the court, being alert at volleyball and lacrosse games to not get hit by balls during warmups and walk-off hits during baseball games, to list just a few.

This year I have thanks for a personal bad time that I was going through last summer. Friends, family and co-workers were helpful and supportive.

Now it is time to test memories and be thankful that I was able to dig up from a variety of sources some sports quotes that might be entertaining on the holiday.

Pals hopes his 3A state tournament performance will draw the attention of college coaches.

“Westin absolutely played his best golf over the two days of the state tournament,” said Lutheran coach Kevin Voltz. “In the four years I’ve known him, he has dedicated his life to golf. His goal has been to play in college and beyond. With his high school days coming to an end, I believe he put too much pressure on himself to perform and subsequently his performance suffered because of this. It all came together at the state tournament, having played the best highpressure golf I’ve seen from him.” and Nico Jamison of Greeley West before meeting Silverman in the match for the state title. Schilling helped the Raiders edge Cherry Creek for the state team title.

The only set he lost was to Creek’s George Cavo, but he won that match, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 , on Sept. 30.

“The season was good, an undefeated season,” said Schilling. “To be successful I had some pretty tough matches that I had to go through.”

Need: Volunteers to teach English. Tutoring takes place in the student’s home. Refugees live throughout Denver, but the largest concentrations are in Thornton, near 88th Avenue and Washington Street, and in east Denver/Aurora, near Colfax Avenue and Yosemite Street.

Other Details: Tutors do not need to speak the student’s language. Most participants are homebound women and small children, adults who are disabled, and senior citizens.

Many are not literate in their first language, and remain isolated from American culture.
