My dad was a hard rock miner, and he and his brother would trade off every year, one working in the mines and one going to Colorado State University, which was Colorado A&M at the time.

Later we moved to Briggsdale, on Colorado’s northeastern plains. I thought it was wonderful, and after World War II, we moved to Greeley, and I thought my life was over now that we lived in the big city.

I had my choice of 11 jobs when I graduated. I went to work at Rocketdyne in California, where I worked on the rocket engines that went to the moon.

It was exciting watching my rocket engines go to the moon. It filled me with pride. I was never worried it would blow up — we tested the daylights out of those things.

Get social at new bars and restaurants Bacon Social House, Social Bar & Lounge add to local offerings

Littleton’s got a couple new places to get social.

Bacon Social House, the second location of the hip uptown brunch spot, opened at Vita Littleton — the apartment complex formerly called the Grove — in May. Across town, classy cocktail joint Social Bar & Lounge recently opened in the sleepy Columbine Valley Shopping Center at Lowell Boulevard and Bowles Avenue.

The two social spots join others building the gastronomic milieu of a town where fine dining and drinking once meant little more than steak and beer.

Bacon me crazy Bacon Social House features a retrochic vibe, said marketing director Molly Martin, with a menu to match.

“It’s all about playful takes on classic items,” Martin said.

The restaurant’s signature menu item is the “bacon flight,” Martin said — a twist on the “flights” of beers at craft breweries — featuring, you guessed it, up to a half-dozen strips of

gourmet bacon for $9.95.

Other big hits on the menu include the chicken and waffles ($16.50), Martin said, and the bacon tater tots ($4).

Bacon Social House also offers several vegetarian and vegan options.

The breakfast menu also boasts a slew of cocktails for pre-noon whistlewetting, including several containing, yes, more bacon.

Unlike Bacon Social House’s northern neighbor in Denver’s Sunnyside neighborhood, Littleton’s location also offers a full dinner menu, including specialties like pan-seared halibut ($20) or bacon-wrapped meatloaf ($13.50).

The restaurant found a home at Vita Littleton at Littleton Boulevard and Bemis Street, marking the first entrée of an upscale eatery onto the stretch of Littleton’s main drag east of the

railroad tracks.

Littleton’s community charm makes a great setting for Bacon Social House, said general manager Jason Isch.

“Sunnyside is a more transient population, which is great because we meet people from all over,” Isch said.

“Littleton is more family-focused, and we love that.”

Bacon Social House’s nouveau vibe is attractive to Danny Lee, who dropped by for his second visit with friend Linh Ly on June 27.

“It’s more modern than other places in town,” Lee said. “Lots of the other breakfast restaurants around here are pretty old-fashioned. Plus the food’s great.”

IN THE FOODIE SCENE Littleton is making its way into the Denver foodie scene, said Denise Mickelsen, the food editor of culture magazine 5280.

“It’s on the radar,” Mickelsen said. “It seems like every time I turn around, Littleton keeps popping up.”

Mickelsen cited the expansion into Littleton of established Denver hotspots like View House, Bacon Social House and Adelita’s.

“As the Denver market gets saturated with new openings, brands are branching out into smaller towns,” Mickelsen said.

Sometimes the reverse is true, Mickelsen said, citing Littleton original Carboy Winery, which recently opened a third location in Denver.

Littleton is also blessed with an array of quirky local favorites, she said, and while the city isn’t alone in concerns over high-end eateries pushing out longtime institutions, there’s drama up and down the spectrum.

“With real estate prices sky-high, coupled with tight profit margins and a labor shortage, lots of places have it tough,” Mickelsen said. “But for a full and healthy food scene, you need all levels.”

The trick going forward, Mickelsen said, will be to get more chefs to think of Littleton as a place to open their first location. But they’ll have to grapple with the same price pressures as everyone else.

“How does someone with a dream and a set of family recipes get started now?” she said.

Racers support blind literacy programs

undreds of runners and walkers turned out for the National Federation of the Blind of Colorado’s “6 Dot Dash” 5K run on June 29, setting off from the Colorado Center for the Blind near Littleton’s Sterne Park.

The race, named for the six dots that comprise the cells of the braille alphabet, supports braille literacy programs for blind and visually impaired people. Many of the race’s participants took off down the course sweeping canes ahead of them.

“Today is about celebrating the independence of blind people here and all over the world,” said Scott LaBarre, president of the National Federation of the Blind of Colorado. “It’s about us taking our rightful place in society. And it’s about literacy, which grants confidence, independence and opportunity.”

“And it goes without saying,” LaBarre added, “it’s about enjoying a beautiful summer day in Colorado.”

Runners, many of whom are blind, take off down the track at the 6 Dot Dash 5K race near Littleton’s Sterne Park on June 29. The race, hosted by the National Federation of the Blind of Colorado, supports braille literacy programs.

Running for city council? Do it for the right reasons, mayor says

Some local social media users like to call for a change on Littleton’s city council.

For those interested in putting their money where their mouth is, city officials are ready to assist anyone interested in running for one of the four seats up for grabs on council this fall.

A handful of council hopefuls attended a workshop for potential candidates at Littleton City Center on June 27, where City Clerk Wendy Heffner ran through the process for getting on the ballot.

“I’ll do whatever I can to help you,” said Heffner, who told the group she got her start in government as an elected city clerk in her hometown of Idaho Springs. “Just give me a call.”

Littleton’s city council is made up of seven members, with four representing different districts in the city. The remaining three seats are at-large.

The following seats will see elections this year: • District 2, the city’s northeast quadrant, where councilmember and Mayor Pro Tem Jerry Valdes is running for re-election.

• District 4, the city’s southwest quadrant, currently represented by Mayor Debbie Brinkman, who is term-limited.

• The at-large seat represented by Kyle Schlachter, who was elected to a two-year term in 2017 and is running for re-election.

• The at-large seat represented by Peggy Cole, who is term-limited.

In addition to Schlachter and Valdes, three other candidates have filed paperwork to run for council this fall as of June 28: Scott Melin and Pam Grove for the at-large races, and Kathleen Eckel for District 2.

Run the right way Brinkman, who has served on council since 2007 and is coming to the end of her third and final term, told the group that in her experience, successful candidates knock on as many doors as possible.

“Remember that it’s about citizens first,” Brinkman said. “There’s a reason they call it public service.”

Brinkman said she hoped candidates were running for “the right reasons.”

“It’s got to be in support of the city, the citizens and local organizations,” Brinkman said. “Sometimes people run just to disrupt city business, or with an ideological agenda. Those aren’t the right reasons. The idea is to contribute your thoughts and ideas to move the city forward.”

Councilmembers driven by national politics do more harm than good, Brinkman said.

“They’ve paralyzed cities,” Brinkman said. “We haven’t seen it much in Littleton, but it’s been happening in nearby municipalities. City staff and even citizens start to feel it. It can be very toxic.”

“When I ran the first time, people told me it would only take me 10-15 hours a week,” Brinkman said. “But honestly, if you can only put in 10 hours a week toward council, you probably shouldn’t run for council.”

Only two current councilmembers have full-time jobs, Brinkman said, with the rest either self-employed or retired.

Successful councilmembers, Brinkman said, are willing to collaborate and compromise.

“When you’ve got councilmembers who won’t talk, or you always have the same predictably split votes, the work suffers,” Brinkman said.

Candidates must collect at least 50 valid signatures on a candidate petition.

All signatures must be collected from Aug. 6 through Aug. 26, 2019. Petitions are available through the city clerk’s office.

The meeting’s attendees said they found the information enlightening, though more than one said they would have to put some serious thought into the time commitment required of councilmembers.

“I feel pretty confident about running, but my job is already 50 or more hours a week,” said Bill Schwanitz, a software architect.

Iftin Abshir, who is currently the chairperson of Littleton’s Next Generation Advisory Council, said that while she’s still exploring whether she wants to run, she feels confident about the current crop of potential candidates.

“This is a great group, and I hope they stay invested in running,” Abshir said.

Centennial Airport says FAA left gaps in flight path study Congress-mandated studies on noise effects must be completed, airport argues

Not much is set to change, FAA says

Wheels started turning on a federal plan to reroute airplane traffic in the Denver metro area years ago, but after the government released more than 1,000 pages of a study on its potential effects, Centennial Airport is still urging a closer look.

“Congress has recognized that it is quite obvious that the (Federal Aviation Administration) has not sufficiently addressed, or at a minimum underestimated, the need for broad citizen participation,” said a letter from the airport’s executive director, Robert Olislagers, to the FAA. The June 5 letter came a day before the public comment period closed on the FAA’s draft of an analysis of the NextGen Denver Metroplex project, which aims to optimize arrival and departure at local airports. That includes Denver International Airport, Centennial Airport and some others.

The study, called a draft environmental assessment, looked at impacts the project could have on noise, air quality, wildlife, and historic and cultural resources.

The proposed change in flight paths is expected to have “no significant impacts” on those aspects of the Denver metro area, according to the study.

But Centennial Airport points to widespread backlash in other metro areas across the country where Metroplex plans have been implemented.

“Legal action was initiated against the FAA regarding Metroplex implementations in Phoenix, Los Angeles (southern California) and BaltimoreWashington, D.C., and more communities are considering the same,” the airport wrote. Implementation “was followed by very significant increases in noise complaints in communities in northern California ... southern California (Los Angeles), Washington, D.C./Baltimore and Phoenix.”

The FAA contends that most proposed flight paths in the Denver area closely follow what are being flown today and that around Centennial Airport, the plan includes only two notable flight path changes.

It’s unclear how closely other cases will mirror Denver metro’s experience — the lion’s share of increased air traffic over some Phoenix areas was by jets, for example, whereas larger planes have less presence at Centennial Airport.

“Centennial Airport stands with its neighboring communities, and we want the FAA to address these concerns now — not after implementation,” said Deborah Grigsby Smith, airport spokesperson.

the plan, but the FAA argues that one proposed route at issue, BRNKO, entails a tiny amount of traffic.

And planes today already travel the area the other proposed PINNR path would cover in the Denver area, according to the FAA. That’s a proposed route that travels south, roughly above Interstate 25, starting around Greeley and turning southeast over the Denver area.

The BRNKO route — pronounced “Bronco” — would take arrivals from the northeast that currently stay east of I-25 and move them farther north, joining up with PINNR near Greeley and traveling in that same corridor as flights move south.

BRNKO only entails about six flights per day on average that would be moved from an older corridor, according to the FAA. About two daily would use a nearby route that ends up over the same south metro area. Centennial Airport sees about 1,055 daily takeoffs and landings combined.

And once BRNKO flights cross the City of Denver border into Arapahoe County, its flights would largely cover the same areas as current routes do, according to FAA maps.

But Centennial Airport argues the route will put pilots over unsafe territory: the foothills, where volatile wind conditions can be “unpredictable,” according to the letter.

“When weather or winds are not a

The FAA held 12 public meetings, mostly in the Denver metro area, at which FAA representatives answered questions about the project and took written comments. Those ran from April 29 to May 16.

The final environmental assessment will give the last word on whether further study needs to be done on the potential impact.

Before that, the agency took comments online and by physical mail during a roughly six-week public comment period that lasted until June 6. The FAA sent out an announcement of the project in May 2016.

It’s anticipated the FAA will present a final environmental assessment in September and begin implementation of the project around March 2020.

‘Important environmental info missing’ The plan is expected to have “no significant impacts” on noise, air quality, wildlife, or historic and cultural resources, according to the draft of the FAA study dated April 22.

The report does note that about 100 people in rural parts of Jefferson, Adams and Elbert counties would likely experience a noise increase of 5 decibels in areas where the average noise would usually vary between 45 and 60 decibels. Conversation in restaurants generally hovers around 60 decibels, according to a Purdue University chart. Upper-70s levels are annoyingly loud to some people, the chart said.

But that’s the extent of the notable noise changes, the report said — and only increases of 1.5 decibels or more in areas exposed to 65 decibels and up are considered to “exceed threshold of significance,” according to the report.

Centennial Airport’s director, however, argued that the FAA didn’t consider the impact of the part of flight that occurs below 3,000 feet above ground, and that leaves unclear how much communities could be affected.

Littleton, Centennial, Cherry Hills Village, Lone Tree, Castle Rock and other nearby cities could experience notable effects, Olislagers said.

Flights “will increase over areas that have never or rarely seen overflight at lower altitudes. It is one thing when (DIA) commercial airline traffic flies over at 10,000 feet” above ground, Olislagers said. “It’s something quite different when a business jet, inbound to Centennial Airport, comes over at

In the letter, the airport also pushed for the FAA to complete more studies mandated by the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018, a law passed by Congress, before it puts the Metroplex plan in motion.

The recent law requires the FAA to study the agency’s “community involvement” practices regarding NextGen Metroplex projects; the effect of aircraft noise on communities; the relationship between noise and health impacts such as sleep disturbance and elevated blood pressure, as well as the effect on businesses located under certain flight paths; and whether 65 decibels and up remains an acceptable FAA standard for significant noise exposure, according to the airport’s letter.

“Some of the results of these mandated studies could be complete around the same time that the FAA plans on implementing the Denver Metroplex,” Olislagers said. The “results of these studies could have a significant impact on the Denver Metroplex, as well as the FAA’s conclusion that there is ‘no significant impact.’”

Whether the FAA must wait until the studies are complete is unclear, Olislagers added.

Enjoying a pedal-powered commute Bike to Work Day means two-wheeled fun

By the tail end of the morning commute on Bike to Work Day on June 26, most of the riders who had somewhere to be were already at their destinations.

But for the stragglers — those who work from home or already left the rat race behind — a leisurely morning ride was accentuated by booths handing out coffee and doughnuts and offering free bike tune-ups.

“This is all about free food, fun, and a chance to meet people,” said Martin Pahl, a semi-retired doctor who was cruising the trails while he waited for a mechanic to fix his car, as he chomped on a doughnut at a trailside breakfast stop at Riverside Downs along the Mary Carter Greenway in Littleton. “It gets people out on the trails you wouldn’t normally see.”

Hopefully, some of those who pedal their way to work start to dig it, said Pedal bike shop operations manager Bill Meyer.

“People start to see what the trails have to offer,” Meyer said.

Arapahoe County fair boasts new programming Annual gala honors outstanding achievements in Colorado’s theater community STAFF REPORT

A Mexican rodeo, a butterfly festival and the Home Brew and Food Festival are among the new programs debuting this year at the Arapahoe County Fair.

More than 22,500 visitors attend the annual fair, which has been presented for 113 years. This year’s fair will be July 25-28 at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds and Park, 25690 E. Quincy Ave., Aurora.

The Mexican rodeo, also known as a charreada, celebrates cowboy pageantry with colorful costumes, lively music, dancers, and horsemanship skills. Mexican rodeo events include bull riding, horse and steer roping, bareback riding, and trick roping.

Spectators can also enjoy a performance from world-class entertainers Banda la Revuelta.

“We’re thrilled to honor the Hispanic culture in our community with a charreada as part of this year’s Arapahoe County Fair,” Matt Bixenman, fairgrounds site manager, said

in a news release. “Rodeo fans will be blown away by the beauty and excitement.”

Visitors 21 and older can raise a glass in honor of homebrewers at the Home Brew & Food Festival highlighting budding homebrewers and food vendors. Beer connoisseurs can also experience the fair’s Craft Brew Festival, sampling local brews and bites from more than 16 craft breweries.

Attendees can vote for their favorite beer. Both events require a separate ticket from fair admission, and both are required for entry.

In addition to these new programs, the fair continues to host classic activities such as a carnival, live entertainment, games, 4-H, rodeo, pie contest, woodworking, floriculture, horticulture, and more. Open-class competition registration is now open to exhibitors interested in participating.

Daily tickets to the fair are $10 online before July 25. Tickets are $15 per day when purchased at the gate. Online purchases are subject to processing fees, not included in the $10 cost.

Littleton Adventist welcomes new CEO STAFF REPORT

After a nationwide search, Centura Health and Littleton Adventist Hospital have hired a chief executive officer for the hospital.

Jillyan McKinney will transition to Littleton Adventist from Louisville, where she has served as CEO at Centura Health’s Avista Adventist Hospital. She begins her new post July 14.

McKinney McKinney brings more than 10 years of operational experience.

Most recently, she led a team at Avista that maintained a Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade “A” rating, and Avista was ranked in the top 15 percent nationally for patient experience.

Before joining Centura Health, she worked as vice president of strategic business development for the Lake Nona and Sunbridge communities for Florida Hospital in Orlando.

According to a news release, McKinney’s mission to bring greater physician alignment and lead her team to a collective goal of improving the health and lives of her community.

Social Bar offers 20 beers on tap and more than two dozen wines, but the real spirit of the place is in its 14 cocktails — seven classics and seven special creations.

proachable craft cocktails in the suburbs,” Cominsky said.

The bar’s location might seem unconventional, Cominsky said, but that’s part of the plan.

“Downtown Denver is awesome, but it’s hard to get to,” Cominsky said. “Downtown Littleton is lots of fun, but parking is really hard. This is a great little neighborhood gathering place.”

The “social” in the name seems to fit the atmosphere, Cominsky said.

“You don’t see a lot of phones out here,” Cominsky said. “People are really getting to know each other.”

Riize Coffee opened recently at 8200 Southpark Circle, joining a number of other new businesses filling in the area northeast of Santa Fe Drive and County Line Road.

The city has seen a few closings this year as well, with Spur Coffee on Prince Street near downtown closing last winter under mysterious circumstances.

At Prince Street and Santa Fe Drive, both Breugger’s Bagels and Subway shut their doors this year.

Down at the south end of town, 38 State Brewing served its last beer at the end of May, after eight years and numerous awards.

“We’ve been blessed to have met so many wonderful people throughout this journey that we would’ve never known otherwise,” read a post on 38 State’s Facebook page. “The smiles and high fives will be missed the most.”

Reid Betzing set to be Littleton’s new city attorney Longtime Arvada lawyer to fill spot after suspension, resignation of predecessor

The City of Littleton has offered the position of city attorney — vacant since the February suspension and resignation of attorney Steve Kemp — to Reid Betzing, who until recently was Arvada’s senior assistant city attorney.

Betzing was one of three finalists for the role, and was chosen by a full consensus of Littleton City Council in executive session on Betzing June 29 to enter into contract negotiations ahead of confirmation at the July 2 council meeting, Mayor Debbie Brinkman said.

Brinkman said she’s confident Betzing is a smart choice.

“He has the municipal legal experience to hit the ground running,” Brinkman said. “He’s personable, he’s friendly, he’s got a great sense of humor and he understands the law.

We’re excited about this — we’ve got so much going on, but we’ve been without an in-house attorney for months.”

Brinkman also praised the other two finalists: Melanie Snyder, former Colorado chief deputy attorney general, and Ashley Augustin, Jefferson County’s deputy district attorney.

“They were all overwhelmingly talented,” Brinkman said. “We couldn’t have made a wrong choice.”

City Manager Mark Relph said he looks forward to working with Betzing.

“Reid was my first choice” of the finalists, Relph said. “He’s able to

see the big picture. He did great research on the city, and was very informed on topics we’ve been plowing through recently.”

Relph said there’s plenty of work to be done on the upcoming city Comprehensive Plan update, and the code and land use updates that will follow.

Betzing, 45, has been an attorney for 18 years, and worked for the city of Arvada since 2006.

Starting as the city prosecutor, Betzing moved into other roles, representing the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities and the city parks department.

In recent years, Betzing has focused on land use and public works projects, he said, and handled negotiations over the expansion of the RTD Light Rail into Arvada.

Betzing left his job in Arvada in 2018 amid “organizational changes” and a desire to spend more time with his kids, he said.

Betzing, who lives in Lakewood with his wife and two young sons, said he was drawn to Littleton’s charm.

“It’s truly a jewel in the Denver metro area,” Betzing said.

Betzing is expected to start his new job on July 22, Brinkman said.

The city offered Betzing a salary of $187,000 a year, Brinkman said, which would make him the city’s second-highest-paid employee after Relph. Former city attorney Steve Kemp made $184,400 a year.

Kemp was suspended in February after undisclosed personnel issues, and later accepted what city council called “an opportunity to resign.”

In the interim, the city has been represented by the law firm of Denver attorney Ken Fellman.

Betzing said he’s eager to get started and looks forward to getting to know people in the community.

“My role is to talk to the public about the city’s direction and interpretation of its laws,” Betzing said.

“I’m easy to talk to.”

When it comes to love stories, bibliophilia is one for the books

have books on shelves in two rooms that I will never read from cover to cover again. I keep them because they are some of my dearest friends.

QUIET What’s on someone’s bookshelves DESPERATION tells a lot about them, unless they’ve gone out and bought best sellers just to look good; but I guess that tells something about them too.

This is a tribute to books. Hardcovers and paperbacks only.

Craig Marshall I have mentioned my childhood in Ann Smith Arbor, Michigan. It’s where a lot of things happened for the first time, including books.

In the summer when I was between third grade and fourth grade, a little bookmobile came to Burns Park every two weeks, parked in the street, and opened its doors. I don’t know how many books were in it; maybe fewer than what I have on my shelves right now.

I was issued my first identification card ever, and then I looked at all of the covers, and tried my best to make the big decision.

I don’t think I owned a single book until I was in the fifth grade. Whenever I was asked what I wanted for my birthday, I said gloves and bats and balls, not books.

The bookmobile had a couple of books about a detective that a brainy kid named Charles Waldrop told me about. Thanks, Charles.

Obviously, the regional SMFR doesn’t care when it imposes its bureaucracy and standards that inflate their fees.

He is not available to his constituents, and gives vague, non-committal answers when pressed on the issues.

I encourage voters to take a look at Dan Baer. Dan is a Colorado native. He has a passion for human rights work, and a background that has made him empathetic and resilient. He has valuable public service, foreign policy, and national security experience, but he is not a politician.

Dan is traveling throughout the state to listen and learn how to best represent the people of Colorado. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Dan, and have thoroughly enjoyed speaking with him. He is intelligent, accomplished, and personable. We need to send non-traditional candidates like Dan to Washington, who will come at issues from a place of principle, not politics.

Holmes.

The first book I checked out was “The Hound of the Baskervilles.”

Since then, I have read all of the books and short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, and I own nine of the 14 Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes films that were made between 1939 and 1946.

Obviously, that was more than one a year. The quality of the writing and filming, however, is high, and Rathbone’s Holmes has never been surpassed.

My favorite Holmes short story is “The Red-Headed League,” and my favorite Holmes book is my first, “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” partly, I’m sure, because it was my first.

I have all of my nonfiction here in my office, and all of my fiction on shelves in the guest room.

I’ve seen libraries in homes in magazines and movies that I envy, and I’m not even close to those. But when I walk into my small office, and see all of my “friends,” I am in a very special part of the house.

Perhaps my favorites in this room are the biographies and autobiographies. In the guest room, I have a row of Dickens and a row of Doyle, and many of the books I was assigned in college that might have contributed to my disposition. It doesn’t take long to read “The Stranger” by Camus, but it has lasted a lifetime.

I have a book titled “Groucho’s Letters,” and that’s exactly what it is. There’s Dorothy Parker and her contemporary, Fran Lebowitz.

Look for opportunity amid negative change

C

hange happens. And as it has been said before: “Change happens, and it will happen again.” And when we are the ones making the changes, it can be incredibly thrilling and exciting as we prepare mentally and emotionally for those changes. A new start, a new challenge, or a new path in life can really be inspiring.

And as inspiring as beginning something new can be, it can also bring with it a healthy dose of fear. We are excited, yet we are nervous at the same WINNING time. If you have WORDS decided to make a change or new start, you know what I am talking about. In the end, whether we are absolutely positive and going forward with confidence in our new start, or we are terrified, the change is typically Michael Norton better than we expected and just what we needed.

So what do we do about an unexpected change? Some unexpected changes completely catch us off guard, others we may have expected were coming, and for some unexpected changes, when they happen, we know we should have been the ones who made the change or the decision in the first place. We waited it out too long, and

before we knew it, someone had made the change or decision for us.

When an unexpected change happens that is extremely positive, we tend to become extremely excited and optimistic about what that change could mean. Maybe it’s a job promotion with a higher income, or perhaps it’s finding out we are about to have another grandchild. Maybe we came into an inheritance or won the lottery and our financial future just became a little easier. So many good and positive unexpected changes await us all.

It’s those negative unexpected changes that always seem to feel like a gut punch. These are the kinds of changes that can cause us stress, can destroy our self-confidence, leave us feeling down and lost. An unexpected loss of employment, a diagnosis of an illness, a traumatic injury, the sudden end of a relationship, or an immediate financial hardship. Any of these can bring the strongest of people and families down. Or it can be just the call to action needed to accept the change or deal with the change on our own terms.

If it’s an illness we find the right doctor and fight it. If it’s a job loss, we immediately work through our network to start interviewing, learn a new skill, or start something completely different. When we experience

Drivers can cooperate to make roadways civil

s you’re heading out for Fourth of July, summer vacations, or just around town, you’re going to run into (hopefully, not literally) other cars on the road. Some of us have been in Colorado for years and understand the culture of driving in Colorado — not just the best roadways to get around potholes, but the “going-with-the- GUEST flow” behaviors of COLUMN most of our drivers historically. For those who are new to the area, or who need a refresher of how to “fit in” and make your driving experience here optimal, here are a few tips you never knew Linda Newell you needed.

Yes, the Colorado driving experience is actually getting worse.

• From 2013 to 2016, there was a 40% increase in the number of drivers involved in fatal crashes in Colorado.

• Although fortunately, alcohol DUI driving is down overall (possibly partially due to our recent legislative crackdowns), the number of drivers testing positive for marijuana use went up 145% in the same period.

• National statistics now show that

per capita, Colorado is second in the nation for fatalities due to road rage and aggressive behaviors of tailgating, speeding, or weaving in and out of traffic.

Why, and what can we do about it?

True to form, Colorado long-timers blame the newcomers. The newcomers blame the “too-courteous” or “takingtheir-time” drivers here. Either way, just like our neighborhoods and workplaces, we’ve got to also get along on the road. There’s a culture clash of driving behaviors that needs to be blended for our safety, stress and sanity.

Here are some suggestions for remembering that Colorado civility is a thing, and especially necessary while driving.

• Allowing drivers into the lane in front of you (rather than speeding up), waving thank you when you’re allowed in, or merely using your turning signal can help all of our stress levels. Using the zipper method as you’re merging is helpful for the traffic flow and driver stress. And how could it hurt you — maybe arrive three minutes slower to your destination?

• Remember the Move Over Law here. It is required by law to move into the next lane, or if you can’t, to slow down significantly when approaching an emergency situation on the side of the road — tow trucks, workers, pullovers, tire changes …

• Slow down in inclement weather — drivers respond to our crazy Colorado weather in various ways, but almost always (with the exception of an occasional overly confident SUV driver), we slow down a bit with heavy rains or snow. Most employers or family members understand our weather unpredictability and would rather have you show up late rather than not at all.

CBD unregulated, but vendors undaunted Business grows for sellers of cannabis extract

T

he sign in front of his business is subtle, yet Todd Muck said it can scare people off who are wary of the threeletter abbreviation and its association to the newest extension of the cannabis industry: CBD. Muck is the CEO of Cannabis Bioscience Development in Franktown, a small, second-floor office selling products containing various combinations of cannabinoids purported to have medicinal properties. Cannabinoids are one class of chemical compounds in cells that alter neurotransmitter release in the brain.

Cannabidiol, known better by its abbreviated name CBD — not to be confused with the name of Muck’s storefront — is the most present of the 113 cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Combined with different concentrations of cannabinoids, the oil can be an ingredient for lotion, tincture, body wash, bath bombs, candy, dog treats and numerous other products — all with the claim it can help stop muscle and joint pain, promote muscle relaxation and relieve anxiety, among other things.

Muck, a Nebraska transplant, has bull-riding friends who swear by the oil’s ability to relax years-old pains.

Muck has arthritis, which he said has improved since applying a CBD salve to his hands daily.

Skeptics often point to the possibility of a placebo effect. Muck will then talk about his 14-year-old border collie, which after a regular dosage of CBD, Muck said, “acts like a puppy again.”

“All he knows,” Muck said, “is it’s a treat that makes him feel better.”

CBD is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. However, the FDA has taken notice of its surge in popularity and its alleged health benefits. Now through July 16, the FDA is requesting comment through a public docket to answer questions people have so far. On May 31 the FDA held a hearing to discuss the product.

Most of Muck’s customers are specifically looking for an alternative to marijuana. Though Muck’s products contain, by law, less than 0.3% THC, the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana, the relation and confusion between CBD and THC is enough to keep skittish potential consumers at bay.

Many of Muck’s customers, he said, come to him having been burned before by some products, while others have worked. This dilemma is commonplace for CBD retailers.

Muck can only provide anecdotal evidence on whether his products work. He said he provides test results from each of his products from a third party, which he believes adds cred-

But that’s not the case for every vendor. From consumers’ perspective, there’s no telling what is legitimate.

The FDA says that should it decide to regulate the product, it will likely be easier to differentiate between real and scam products, and the medicinal value of each product.

As an unregulated industry, there is no formal testing required or benchmark to determine one CBD product from another. Some shop owners will have their products tested by a third

party, but scientific proof of the product’s contents is not required.

Given that CBD science is limited, those who sell it must be careful not to allude to it having proven health benefits.

“That’s the one thing we’re careful of, is we’re not telling people ‘this is going to work for you,’” said Rick Morgan, president and manager of Total Beverage, a liquor store in Thornton and Westminster that recently began selling CBD products. “For the most part, our staff just says: ‘This is what

we carry. We don’t know anything about what it can and can’t do. There aren’t studies. If you need more information, the internet is your best spot.’

We’re not pushing people on it. We’re more just trying to answer questions.”

‘One more thing’ Retail stores specializing in CBD products, like Muck’s, are popping up in greater numbers since the start of the year. Colorado has been a leader in the CBD industry for a few years, but it wasn’t until the beginning of this year that CBD became more easily transported throughout the United States.

In June 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex, a prescription CBD solution used for the treatment of seizures.

In December, Congress passed the 2018 Farm Bill, legalizing the extraction of CBD oil from hemp products federally. King Soopers recently announced it would be carrying CBD products in some of its stores.

According to Statista, a consumer data website, the CBD industry generated $512.7 million in nationwide revenue last year. It is projected to generate $813.2 million in 2019 and $1.8 billion by 2022.

Morgan said he had considered putting the product on his company’s shelves for at least two years before deciding to give CBD its own shelf, in place of where the sake and vermouth used to be.

More than 2,000 lavender plants will perfume the air at Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms on July 20, when they are especially celebrated with what is planned to be an annual event — the Lavender Festival. Loved for hundreds of years for its fragrance, lavender has historically been grown in Provence, France, where fields of it thrive in bright sunshine.

In recent years, Colorado growers — and others in the West — have discovered that lavender responds happily to our dry, sunny days and cool nights, and it is becoming a significant alternate cash crop for some farmers.

Palisade, home to those luscious Colorado peaches, is also experiencing a surge in lavender culture.

We learned from a Colorado Public Radio broadcast from Grand Junction recently that Colorado State University agriculturalists have reached out to area farmers as they expand into

And that each variety has a distinct fragrance!

It’s therefore an especially appropriate plant for Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms to feature as the property, once a farm, develops into a showplace for plants that will also work well for the local home gardener.

The 750-acre property southwest of Littleton offers both formal gardens and a natural area along Deer Creek — the water source that drew the original farmer to the site. (Longtime residents may remember it as Chatfield Arboretum, but the Farms name

is now the established one.)

The festival will not only display its neat rows of purple and blue flowering plants, but it will offer demonstrations and sales by craft, food and beverage vendors throughout the day.

There will be sachets, of course and creams, body butters and other skin care products, offered by local artisans.

And for those who want to dig deeper, there will be a session called “AntiAging Lavender Herbal Skincare” ($53 non-member, $48 member), which will give the participant products to carry along home, with recipes from 10 a.m. to noon. Register ahead for this.

And, looking around the gardens will offer ideas on how to incorporate lavender plants into home flower beds as well, where they will grow and flow-

er happily year after year. The grayish leaves and blue/purple blooms blend really well into beds of mixed flowers, as well as reliably returning each year, with a bit of trimming and grooming.

Just try to avoid transplanting them once established — they don’t adjust well to being dug out and moved.

While at the venue for the Lavender Festival, visitors can enjoy touring the historic Hildebrand House and other farm buildings, as well as the old school house that was rescued from what is now the bottom of Chatfield Reservoir.

A special dye garden, sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Handweavers, is also located here and one can learn about this traditional craft at a future class, if interested. (We have enjoyed giving hand-dyed fabrics as gifts after purchase from the Handweavers’ annual fall holiday sale in Englewood.)

Also of interest: “One Fell Swoop,” the “Stickwork” sculpture installed this spring, designed by Patrick Dougherty and built from locally harvested saplings of willow, chokecherry and other trees. Kids and their adults will enjoy wandering into this curvy structure. It will remain in place until it deteriorates naturally, Dougherty said.

He has created more than 300 of these distinctive pieces internationally.

Ensemble to perform matinee of classical music

“We kind of like to be the person pushing the line,” Morgan said. “It kind of seems like right after we got into that I’ve heard of more and more places that are carrying it.”

There are a myriad of ways to get CBD, including a number of add-ons some stores provide in their products.

You can choose to have a spritz of CBD with your latte or mixed into a superfood smoothie. On certain shelves you can buy CBD popcorn, chewing gum, vape oil and CBD-infused water.

Total Beverage introduced CBD products to its line in February. On half of one wall of an aisle, CBD products, ranging from tincture to salves, line the shelves. So far, the products are selling well, according to Morgan.

And, if it continues, he foresees making even more room for the product.

“Most people seem to like it so far.

They’re already here buying other stuff so it’s one more thing we can offer them,” Morgan said. “It’s still a really small piece of our business, but it’s definitely growing.”

Does it work?

CBD is legal to sell in all but five states in the nation if it contains less than 0.3% THC. There are different spectrums of CBD found in a product that is used for different purposes.

cannabis at the school this fall and has taught two similar classes at Red Rocks Community College in the past.

He said CBD can be an effective treatment for a variety of ailments.

Wilder said a high dose of CBD can counteract feelings of being “too high” off THC and is often administered for people who ingest too much THC through overconsumption of marijuana edibles.

“It’s not necessarily that more is better. There’s a balance about it,” Wilder said about CBD. “If you use it at low doses, the body tends to make more receptors for it so it has more of an effect, and you can do that in an ongoing basis. If you do that at a high dose you develop a tolerance … you want to try and hit that sweet spot somewhere in between.”

Muck answers questions from his most skeptical customers with stories

of friends whose vision had improved or had pain controlled using CBD. Prepared with test results of his product’s contents, Muck is confident it works.

Morgan is too, though he doesn’t use it himself. His wife does, and it’s enough to make a believer out of him.

Taylor Hecker, executive assistant for Nature’s Best CBD in Littleton, said the product speaks for itself.

“I’m blessed to be in this industry.

It’s an awesome plant,” Hecker said.

“I’ve had customers come to me crying because they’re in so much pain.

Then they call us a week later crying because they feel better.”

Too often, Muck said, people will come back reporting mixed results from trying CBD. A lot of people can get duped into buying coconut oil or vegetable oil instead from other stores, he said.

“There need to be a lot more studies done,” he said. “But the studies so far have shown overwhelmingly positive effects.”

Julie Nen, who visited Nature’s Best June 24, peppered the sales representative with questions. She had back pain and mixed experiences with using CBD in the past. Yet, here she was again, testing out the powers of the oil. Following one lengthy explanation after another, Nen, palms on the edge of the glass, sighed and said, “Maybe I should just smoke some weed.”

The tincture edible forms of CBD are advertised to not cause any side effects either, other than some nausea if overconsumed, by just about every CBD retailer.

The FDA has said it needs to look at the side effects of the chemical, using

Epidiolex as a yardstick for which to measure the chemical’s potential for regulation. One of those side effects the FDA is exploring is whether CBD can have a potentially harmful effect on the liver.

What’s next?

Muck tends to use the future tense to describe the CBD industry’s promise. It’s going to be big; It’s going to be popular. That’s all contingent, of course, on a widely hoped-for step for the industry: being regulated by the FDA. Wilder agrees there’s a “growing momentum.”

“The issue that raises in turn is the capitalization of cannabis … putting cannabis into a capitalist marketplace so that the processes of industrialization are applied to it, with both the positive and negative effects,” Wilder said.

For now, CBD store owners rely on consumer feedback. Many stores provide no way of knowing how much CBD — if any — a consumer is buying. Salespeople can’t legally make claims about the medicinal properties of the product, but that doesn’t keep some from telling inspirational stories of friends who replaced all their pain medication with CBD products.

“The stigma has been put in on an emotional level over the decades — the ‘devil drug’ and all these visceral things. And the fact that it hasn’t been legalized nationally yet lingers over it — that it’s associated with stoners and hippies and all this,” Wilder said.

“It’s hard to change basic world views.

It takes time.”

affordable mental healthcare services, Stockton sees far fewer male patients than female patients, he said.

He suggested city leaders, such as police and fire chiefs, could affect change by encouraging men in the community to talk more about mental health. This would especially benefit men older than 30 years old, who are the least likely to come to his practice, he said, though he has seen an increasing number of male patients younger than 30.

“There’s this new acceptance amongst that generation that I find really exciting,” he said. “But at the same time, I’m not seeing anything near that for people who are 30 and up.”

He also believes the stigma may change if more men take up careers in mental health. According to a 2016 report from the American Psychological Association, only 35% of psychologists are male.

“If a male client is reaching out and they’re wanting to see a male clinician, and then you factor in insurance, the choices get narrower,” Stockton said. “It’s important to look at how we can make the field appeal to men.”

“It’s something we have to work on every day,” Whitney said. “There are still bad days, but there are also good days.”

Geoff agreed, saying the family makes constant improvement through regular communication, couple’s counseling and the embracing of life’s ups and downs.

Twenty-two years after he first started struggling with depression, Geoff Grandi’s symptoms hadn’t gone away.

They had only intensified, exacerbated by a number of factors — his job, his mother’s death, an earlier divorce and the stress of being a new dad.

But what bothered him most was the way these stressors made him irritable toward his family. And he found himself constantly worried about his relationship with his second wife, Whitney, and their newborn son, Woods.

“That’s such a fear to say, `I think my depression has pushed me into a violent tendency,’ ” the Arvada resident said. “I would just tell her to leave me. I needed to get away, and I thought everyone else would be better off.”

As he prepared for a friend’s bachelor weekend in Breckenridge last summer, he said he also prepared to take his life, bringing a loaded gun with him.

“But it was a fulfilling weekend. I felt loved,” he said. “I ended up not following through.”

When he returned home, Geoff, now 35, gave his gun to Whitney and visited the ER and was transferred to West Pines Behavioral Health, a psychiatric hospital at 3400 N. Lutheran Parkway in Wheat Ridge. It was the first time he’d sought professional help for his depression.

“As men, we need to be tough. We can’t let our families down, we can’t let our friends down,” he said about why he waited so long. “It’s because of society’s expectations.”

Now in an outpatient program with the hospital, Geoff — with Whitney — has been sharing his story as part of Let’s Talk Colorado, an annual mental

health campaign by the Tri-County Health Department. The campaign seeks to raise awareness around mental health with a goal of lessening the stigma associated with it and has focused this year on men in particular, encouraging them to speak up about their struggles.

“Men don’t seek care at the same rate women do,” said John Douglas, executive director of Tri-County Health, “even though numbers show they suffer from depression, anxiety and other obstacles to their well-being the same as everyone else.”

Looking for solutions Those involved with the campaign have pointed to the significant difference between suicide rates for men and women. According to the Colorado Health Institute, in 2017 nearly 900 of Colorado’s 1,175 suicides were committed by men.

Planning/zoning panel moves forward with Kmart site plan Commission will carry out the findings of facts process on July 16

Developers who envision the former Englewood Kmart site turning into a building that offers restaurants, selfstorage units and retail spots recently took a step toward making their vision a reality.

On June 18, Englewood’s Planning and Zoning Commission voted to move toward findings of facts to change part of Englewood’s zoning code to allow for a 60,000-square-foot project at the former Kmart site, 200 W. Belleview Ave. Findings of facts is a step in which a municipality either approves, or denies an application or request. The Planning and Zoning Commission will carry out the findings of facts process at a July 16 meeting.

Capital Pacific is the company pushing for the proposed project at the Kmart site, closed since 2017.

“We’re excited about the project.

We’re all in on improving this project, and we’re going to dramatically enhance it,” said Zeb Ripple, managing partner at Capital Pacific. Ripple pointed to a “retail apocalypse” in which a large number of brickand-mortar retail stores are closing throughout the country. Around 75,000 stores that sell clothes, electronics and furniture are projected to close by 2026, according to a report by UBS, an investment firm.

The current proposed project has one bike stall per 25 parking spaces, but Englewood resident Roger Newmann wants to see more.

If it’s a coffee shop, or something like that, you’re going to have more than two bicycles (at the site),” said Newmann.

Chuze Fitness, a gym company, is opening on the south side of the Kmart building, and Ripple is hoping it would bring more foot traffic to the proposed project.

Following the findings of facts projects, city council will consider recommendations from the commission and the applicants will present their project.

“The uses will remain retail at that existing Kmart and some possible restaurant uses and so on. There’s not a change proposed that would heavily, or inversely impact (the site),” said Erik Sampson, an Englewood planner.
