Weekends on Main: Don’t call it a street festival Social distance regulations mean no schmoozing

Main Street in downtown Littleton will soon play host to outdoor dining on weekends, but don’t think of it as a street festival.

City officials announced they received approval from the Tri-County Health Department to host “Weekends on Main,” a series of weekends where Main Street will be closed to traffic for several blocks to allow downtown restaurants to expand their seating onto the street.

The idea was first proposed by the Littleton Business Chamber and Historic Downtown Littleton Merchants Association in March. It’s intended to help soften the blow of tight seating capacities imposed on restaurants by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to slow the spread of COVID-19.

But while the scene may resemble a street festival, state rules still prohibit gatherings of more than 10 people, and attendees will be expected to stick with the group they arrived with, said city communications director Kelli Narde at a May 26 city council study session.

“Managing the crowd is the thing I’m most concerned about,” Narde

at press time was expected to begin on June 5 or June 12, a full calendar had not been released.

Restaurant staff will be required to wear face masks. Guests will not be required to wear masks, but they are strongly encouraged, Narde said.

Littleton Police officers will be on hand to help maintain social distancing and direct traffic.

Parking will be available on side streets, as well as at Arapahoe Community College, which is allowing free use of its student parking lot. Greg Reinke, who owns Reinke Bros. costume shop, will also allow free parking in the shop’s lot just north of Main Street on Prince Street.

Reservations for participating restaurants are strongly encouraged, Narde said.

The three streets that cross Main Street — Curtice, Nevada and Prince — will all be kept open to allow better access to businesses doing pickup service.

Public Works Director Keith Reester said the city will illuminate the holiday lights in the trees along Main Street to add to the ambiance.

Numerous downtown restaurants have committed to participating in the events, including View House, Smokin’ Fins, The Alley, McKinner’s Pizza Bar, Pho Real, In-Tea, Jake’s Brew Bar, Born to Bake, The Tavern, the Chocolate Therapist and Curds Cheese.

In all, two dozen downtown businesses said they support the idea, said Elizabeth Scofield, the city’s marketing director. Nine businesses — all retailers — said they are opposed to the idea.

Ruth Graham, who owns Ancient Art Healing Center, previously told the Littleton Independent that the merchants in opposition are concerned that the events will cut down on access to their businesses during busy weekend shopping days.

Scofield said the city will provide

advertising placards for non-food businesses that will be placed on dining tables. She added that retailers were asked if they wanted to set up outdoor booths during the events, but no retailers said yes, citing fears of shoplifting and the added hassle of moving merchandise in and out of shops.

City Manager Mark Relph said he’s aware of the opposition from retailers, and called the situation frustrating.

“The city is being asked to sort this all out, and not all people are happy,” Relph said. “The city is not in a winning position here. It’s very difficult.”

Because the Historic Downtown Merchants Association doesn’t speak for non-member businesses, the city would be better off negotiating with a more formal downtown entity like a business improvement district, said Mayor Pro Tem Scott Melin.

“It’s absolutely high time for the city to remove itself from this type of role and decision making with downtown merchants,” Melin said. “It’s not appropriate for the city to be refereeing these kinds of disputes. ... We’re asking the merchants if they like or don’t like our plan. It needs to be their plan.”

The city has allocated $100,000 of federal CARES Act funding toward Weekends on Main, according to city data shared at the May 26 study session, coming out of more than $4.4 million the city received as pass-through money from Arapahoe County.

The city will pay to rent tables and chairs, portable toilets, handwashing stations, directional and safety signage and other costs. Restaurants will be responsible for setting up and tearing down seating arrangements.

City Manager Mark Relph said he’s optimistic for the weekend events, which will join similar sidewalk dining events around the Denver metro area.

“An amazing amount of work has gone into this,” Relph said. “I think we’re all excited.”

More than two months after COVID-19 shutdowns began, state officials allowed restaurants to begin dine-in service again on May 27, and while some Littleton restaurants were ready to start waiting tables again, others were holding off.

Under guidelines from the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment, dine-in seating is allowed if tables are spaced out at least 6 feet apart, all staff wear gloves and face masks, parties are capped at eight people, and capacities are capped at 50% of normal or 50 people indoors, whichever is less. Customers are encouraged but not required to wear face masks while walking to or from their table.

At Palenque -- the newly-rebranded restaurant on Main Street formerly known as Adelita’s -- a few happy diners settled in for their first restaurant meal in months on May 27.

“I’m ready to have a margarita and let someone bring me dinner,” said Katie Kingston, sitting with friends at one of three tables in Palenque’s sparse streetside dining room. “This doesn’t feel weird, really. It just feels normal.”

Owner Brian Rossi, however, was a little nervous.

“This feels like the first day of high school,” Rossi said.

The whole flow of the restaurant is different, he said. There’s no seating at the bar. Directional arrows on the floor guide customers to different areas while maintaining distancing.

Rossi requires customers to wear face masks, which sent a few potential diners packing on day one.

“Mostly people have been great though,” he said.

At Grande Station at the east end of Main Street, Littleton Business Chamber co-president Kal Murib was celebrating.

“Isn’t it so great to see people out again?” said Murib, who owns numerous buildings along Main Street, as he polished off a plate of garlic mussels.“We took this for granted, didn’t we? We didn’t know how good we had it. It’s just so good to see my friends.”

Not every Main Street restaurant was open for dine-in seating yet. The Tavern and McKinner’s Pizza Bar were still takeout-only as of May 27.

At the west end of Main Street, the Melting Pot fondue restaurant was closed completely, with a sign out front for a sanitizing and disinfecting service.

Up above downtown, more restaurants were holding off on dine-in service. Taco House and Damascus Grill were still takeout-only.

It could still be a while until anyone is seated at Romano’s, the familyowned Italian eatery on Windermere Street.

“The regulations keep changing, and we want to do it right,” said coowner Sue Romano.

Romano said the restaurant requires face masks, and she’s concerned that once dine-in service returns, it will be up to wait staff to enforce the rule.

“We’re in the service business, and we don’t want to turn people away, but it’s important we keep our people safe,” she said.

In the meantime, takeout has been going well, and the restaurant is staying afloat.

“We’ll get there,” she said. “When it feels right, we’ll do it.”

‘Every day is Memorial Day for me’ Remembering those who gave all for their country

n a mountainside in Afghanistan in 2005, Danny Dietz, graduate of Littleton’s Heritage High School and Navy SEAL, gave his life for his country.

Nearly 15 years later, his father, Danny Dietz Sr., spent Memorial Day in the shade beside his son’s grave at Fort Logan National Cemetery.

Danny Sr. greeted many visitors who thanked him for his family’s sacrifice.

“It’s hard for me to come here and see my boy lying in the ground like that,” Dietz said. “But on days like today, so many people come by and tell me they remember him. It means something. Every day is Memorial Day for me.”

Nearby, the Dauro sisters -- Grace, 5, Caroline, 3, and Vivienne, 1 -- wandered among the headstones, laying rose after rose on grave after grave.

The girls’ dad, Michael, a former Navy SEAL, said he brings them every Memorial Day. “These people shed their blood,” he said. “I want my girls to know that freedom isn’t guaranteed. It can be taken and lost, and people have paid the ultimate sacrifice to preserve it.

It’s worth defending.”

At Littleton’s World War II memorial in Ketring Park, Jan Merchant watched as the band of brothers from Veterans of Foreign Post No. 4666 honored the fallen.

For the first time, she was there without her father, Earle Reed, who served in the Army in World War II and died last year at age 103.

Reed only moved to Colorado at age 96, Merchant said, but made fast friends with the fellow veterans at the VFW. Stan McClure, who served with the Army in a remote jungle base in Vietnam, choked up as he remembered going to Rockies games with Reed.

Eventually I went into the tech field.

I didn’t think I was very talented, but I wound up doing communications for a company that sells web domains. I convey what’s on the minds of people way smarter than me.

From radio to comedy to fatherhood, the hits keep coming Four Corners radioman I grew up in Gould, a tiny town in the mountains of northern Colorado. I went to Fort Lewis College in Durango. I thought it was a big city because it had stoplights and a Denny’s.

I went to college to play football, but I discovered that small town kids are delusional. Just because we play all the time doesn’t mean we’re any good. So I started working at a radio station.

It was disappointing at first. I hear this amazing radio station, and I walk in and it’s one guy. Everything else was by satellite. I thought all those DJs were in that little studio in Durango.

Life in the Four Corners was great.

We had no cell phones back then. We’d ride our bikes 20 miles just to go to a kegger.

Show some bravado My radio career started to take off. I went to a station in Colorado Springs, then into Denver. I worked for Alice 105.9, KOSI 101 and 99.5 The Mountain.

I learned to have some bravado. I’m

Keep ‘em laughing I do stand-up comedy too, mostly for fundraisers. It’s still terrifying. Before every set I hope I get hit by lightning. I prepare a 10-minute skeleton of a set.

The rest is improv. You’ve got to shut down the thinking part of your brain and go with it.

Living in Littleton is still a bit weird. I grew up very rural. Things were very loose and free. If you wanted an old pickup in your yard, that was fine. Things are cleaner and more organized here. It takes getting used to that my kids can’t pee on the front lawn.

My kids never like my jokes, but they see I’m putting myself out there and staying up late working on things.

It’s cool. I have three smart accomplices.

Being a dad means you have to care.

You have to vote. You have to make the community a good place to live.

All this time, I strove to be a good DJ and comedian and writer, but at the end of the day, being a good dad is what counts.

Polis notes restaurants’ ‘pain’ over shutdown orders Governor says state may look at relief fund

Eateries across Colorado are now allowed to resume sit-down service, but Gov. Jared Polis acknowledged “the pain our restaurants have been through” during the state’s closure of dine-in service.

“And that means everybody,” Polis said at a May 26 news conference.

“It means, of course, restaurant owners, but it also means chefs, sous chefs, bussers, wait staff, greeters” and other workers associated with restaurants.

The day before, Polis announced that restaurants could reopen for limited in-person dining as of May 27.

In response to a Colorado Community Media reporter’s question during the May 26 news conference, Polis didn’t say the state could provide immediate financial assistance to help restaurants survive. But he expressed desire to work with the state Legislature on a smallbusiness relief fund and hopes the federal government can offer more help.

“Many restaurants are participating in the (federal) Paycheck Protection Program, but as originally

He added: “We hope there’s a piece in the next federal legislation that applies specifically to tourism businesses (and) to restaurants.”

Colorado’s restaurant industry accounts for more than 294,000 jobs, or roughly 10% of statewide employment, according to Polis’ presentation.

In authorizing restaurants to resume dine-in operations, Polis said in a May 25 statement that the state is “still a long way from returning to normal, but these updates are a step in the right direction because Coloradans are doing a good job so far limiting our social interactions.”

He added: “If we can continue staying at home as much as possible, wearing face coverings and washing our hands when leaving the house, then we will be able to slow the spread of the virus while reigniting our economy.”

But he warned: “If not, it will cost lives, and the economic pain will also be worse.”

Colorado on March 16 ordered bars and restaurants to stop dine-in service for 30 days — still allowing delivery, take-out and drive-through service — in a bid to slow the spread of COVID-19.

But extensions of the shutdown have kept restaurants and bars closed — except in counties with waivers from state requirements — until now.

Restaurants are now able to open with limited seating, with different parties spaced at least 6 feet apart, and the state is encouraging local officials to allow expanded outdoor

seating options. Polis has suggested cities and counties should consider seating on sidewalks, parking lots and even streets. Municipal parking areas could also be an option, he said.

“That’s really the only way, with the spacing, that we’re going to have a thriving restaurant” industry, Polis said at a May 18 news conference. He added: Restaurants “simply can’t stay in business with a quarter or half capacity.”

Polis also hopes restaurants would expand on their own property outdoors and on adjacent or nonadjacent private plots nearby, as long as they have permission of the landowner.

Bars, however, don’t all have the green light to open for dine-in service. The state will evaluate in June whether establishments that do not serve food can open, according to a fact sheet from the governor’s office on the new guidelines.

“The intent of this guidance is to open establishments in which people traditionally associate only with those in their party,” the fact sheet says.

Whether a business can open as a restaurant depends on whether it is set up to host patrons for meals, the fact sheet continues.

“In many cases, this is straightforward when an establishment already functions as a conventional restaurant and has a full-service kitchen,” the fact sheet says. “There may be some establishments, like breweries with large indoor and outdoor spaces, that want to change their business model to re-open and SEE SHUTDOWN, P19

South Suburban prepares pools, despite uncertainty ‘We still have a lot of questions unanswered’

South Suburban Parks and Recreation provides indoor and outdoor recreation to communities across the south Denver metro area. Those amenities look a lot different during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Lone Tree Recreation Center is scheduled to open on June 1 with safety guidelines in place. The district’s four outdoor pools are usually open by now, with crowds of 200-300 people at each location on a warm day.

RMPBS visited the Cook Creek pool as water was slowly pouring in.

“We are committed to getting this pool open in some capacity this summer,” said Kelsey Whisler, assistant recreation director with South Suburban. “It is an exciting day, but we still have a lot of questions unanswered. We are filling the pool and it’s after Memorial Day so that’s definitely unusual.

We unfortunately don’t have specific dates yet as to when we can open the pools, but we are hopeful and that’s why we are filling it. We hope to get some folks out here enjoying it soon.”

Typically, it’s the beginning of March when the agency begins the process of opening its outdoor pools. A lot of that

But because of COVID-19, they haven’t been able to do any of the usual work due to social distancing and mask wearing. Those restrictions have prevented lifeguard training.

gearing up to go swimming. There are a lot of kids who haven’t been able to do swim lessons for the last three months, which is why South Suburban officials are concerned there could be more saves at its pools, so it’s important to have lifeguards and get them trained.

And there are other challenges the agency is working around.

“Will people have to wear a mask at the pool? We don’t know for sure. We don’t know what our capacity will be,” Whisler said.

There will probably need to be limited pool furniture or none at all, she

said. Locker rooms will also likely be closed.

With safety the No. 1 priority, the agency is looking at the best ways to do that for both staff and participants.

“I wish I had a magic ball to tell me when we’re going to open,” Whisler said. “If I’ve learned anything through this, it’s better not to make too many plans ahead. Once we get the go-ahead, we’ll work as quickly as we can to get open for the public.”

She said South Suburban was still looking at new guidelines released recently by Gov. Jared Polis that covered personal training at pools.

Charity opens doors to mobility Denver nonprofit works in developing countries

In 2006 while in Uganda, David Talbot met a 9-year-old girl with an amputated leg because she had broken it falling out of a tree.

“She had a compound fracture, and they didn’t have any way to fix it,” Talbot said.

Following that initial meeting, Talbot and his nonprofit organization called Crutches 4 Africa kept tabs on the girl and provided her with a pair of crutches every few years as she grew.

About a year ago, she had reached full growth and Crutches 4 Africa arranged for her to travel to Nairobi, Kenya, to receive a prosthetic leg paid for by the government there.

The last Talbot heard about the girl is that she is now attending boarding school. But Crutches 4 Africa intends on following up with her to find out how the prosthetic is working out.

“Lifting somebody up off the ground and giving them an opportunity to participate in life is what it’s all about,” Talbot said. “It’s valuable equipment — anybody who has ever been on crutches gets it.”

Talbot, a Washington Park resident and Rotarian, survived polio in the mid-1950s. In the early 2000s, he began to suffer from post-polio syndrome, affecting primarily his left leg. About that time, Talbot began to research the need for mobility equipment in developing countries and found that at least 20 million people in Africa were in need because of some sort of disability that made them immobile.

And in 2005, he and his wife, Candice, who serves as the organization’s director of operations, got Crutches 4 Africa started.

Charity serves 30 countries Crutches 4 Africa is a volunteer-run nonprofit that collects used and surplus mobility devices and distributes them free of charge to people in need in developing countries. It currently serves 20 countries in Africa and 10 countries outside of Africa.

The four main mobility devices the organization focuses on are crutches, wheelchairs, canes and walkers, Talbot said. But the organization also collects equipment that can be modified to meet an individual’s need such as ankle boots, prosthetics and bike trailers.

(But) there’s people literally crawling on the ground who need that stuff.”

Having traveled to Africa several times in the past to work with people suffering from polio, Audrey Leavitt of Denver’s Lowry neighborhood was already aware of the African people’s need for mobility equipment, she said.

“But I was taken aback after seeing how many people,” Leavitt said, adding she has been involved with Crutches 4 Africa for about three years, hearing about Talbot’s work through her Rotary club. “You don’t get the full scope until you see the other side.”

“The people are very creative and some are little hesitant to give up these (makeshift) devices because they had become such a part of them,” Leavitt said. “But many are willing to try something new, and when they get a real pair of crutches, they are very appreciative because it opens up a whole new world for them.”

Rotary provides connections Talbot said that in using his connections with the Rotary Club, mobility equipment collection drives often start out as Rotary projects put on by clubs across the United States.

Therefore, Crutches 4 Africa’s biggest expense is shipping the equipment overseas, Talbot said. It costs $3,000 to $5,000 per container, but about 3,000 pieces of equipment can fit in one container, Talbot said.

Academy staff reimagined every aspect of its summer programming so it could continue engaging and educating the artists of tomorrow. It reduced tuition, modified each program to ensure an optimal virtual experience and opened the Summer Intensive program to give dancers across the nation the opportunity to train, regardless of their original audition status.

Professors building app to predict odds of catching COVID-19 Another is studying how stay-at-home orders have impacted streams

Colorado School of Mines professors have received two National Science Foundation grants for projects related to COVID-19, including one effort to produce a mobile app that could be used to predict how likely someone is to suffer dangerous complications if they get the disease.

Judith Klein-Seetharaman, the director of bioscience and bioengineering at Mines, and Hua Wang, an associate professor of computer science at the school, are teaming up on the effort to develop the computational model that will provide the foundation for the app, which will synthesize patient data to create a model to predict future COVID-19 outcomes.

“We are going to use existing COVID-19-related patient data and proteomics data and develop a computational model that will take all of the different types of risk factors into account such as comorbidities, lifestyle Kleinfactors, symptoms Seetharaman and behavioral information,” said Klein-Seetheraman. “And we will develop a model from this and then an individual or a physician will be able to enter this information to give a score for that person.”

That score will then indicate the person’s probability of getting COVID-19 or, if they already have the disease, their likelihood of developing complications. A high score would mean someone should call a doctor because they are likely to be infected or develop complications, Klein-Seetharaman said.

The pair said they are hoping to have a first version of the app, which will be called iCOVID and made available for free on the

ave you ever wondered why sometimes we can get so frustrated and even angry at other people because they aren’t serving us fast enough, meeting our needs and demands, or just behaving in a way that we don’t agree with?

Maybe it’s our neighbor, our family, or a company representative who WINNING isn’t helping us fast WORDS enough. It could be a coworker, a customer, or even our boss. Maybe it’s the confusion and neediness of our pets and their inconvenient timing during our virtual meetings as they jump into the Michael Norton picture or bark or meow in the background. And maybe, it’s someone who is or isn’t social distancing the way that we are.

Here’s the harder question: When was the last time we held ourselves to that same standard? That standard that we hold everyone else on the planet accountable to comply with. For many of us, that look in the mirror is exactly what we need right now as we try and work

through all the challenges we are facing today. Whether it’s within our homes, working from our homes, talking to friends and neighbors, or being a part of the community in any way, we should encourage one another to expect more from ourselves and maybe set the example for others.

Service will be slower, let’s expect that to happen. Confusion about the products we ordered and didn’t receive or when we received the wrong size or color can be controlled as we put ourselves in the headset of the customer service person on the other end of the phone or in your chat window. And as we walk together through the days, weeks, and months ahead, we will confront many moments where we will have a disagreement or a difference of opinion. And that’s OK, because as we begin to expect the best from ourselves, and make expecting the best from ourselves a habit, we really will not care how others choose to react, we only know how we will respond.

Castle Rock coffee shop files lawsuit over shutdown C&C Coffee and Kitchen drew national spotlight for Mother’s Day crowd

The Castle Rock restaurant that drew national attention for opening to in-person dining on Mother’s Day in defiance of state and public health orders is suing the governor along with state and local agencies.

Attorney Randy Corporon filed the lawsuit on behalf of his clients, C&C Coffee and Kitchen owners Jesse and April Arellano, on May 22 in Douglas County District Court.

The Arellanos are alleging shutdowns of the restaurant industry during the COVID-19 pandemic were government overreach and constitutional violations that created “economic

The business’s reopening sparked a fierce debate regarding when to ease restrictions on small businesses experiencing economic hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic, while also drawing strong criticism for the restaurant’s lack of social distancing Americans in every state should be allowed to vote by mail if they choose to, especially in the middle of a pandemic and if they are worried about their health. Mail-in voting does not create measurable voter fraud, which is still rare in our system. It is a powerful moment in history right now and it is important that we stand up to him to ensure that everyone can access mail-in ballots if they choose.

Trump is worried about his reelection prospects, which is why he is eager to attack mail-in voting. We need a new administration that allows every American to use their voice to vote either in person or mail-in. Please vote for a change in November!

The lawsuit states that “given the governor’s unprecedented and unlawful exercise of executive authority” the court should “declare the defendants’ actions against plaintiff ultra vires (beyond one’s legal authority), unconstitutional and, therefore, void and of no effect.”

The Arellanos operate two locations of C&C Coffee and Kitchen, one in Castle Rock and one in Colorado Springs. The first opened in 2013 and the second in 2019.

The restaurants closed to dine-in on March 17 when the CDPHE issued a public health order closing all bars,

restaurants, theaters, gyms and casinos, according to the filing.

The lawsuit states the Arellanos attempted to comply with the public health orders by offering curbside service until May 10, choosing to reopen its Castle Rock location then “due to several financial hardships.” The Castle Rock location has remained entirely closed since May 11.

The lawsuit says the coffee shop and restaurant earned a profit between Jan. 1 and March 14, but that revenue declined 55% the week of March 17 and it operated “at a further loss” from then on, despite laying off employees and cutting other costs.

The business is now in debt, the lawsuit states, and may not be able to reopen. The lawsuit asks the court to reverse the orders suspending its operation and award the Arellanos relief for attorney fees and costs incurred by suing.

Patrick Boland perseveres, helps others despite ‘suicide disease’

or eight years, Patrick Boland, 16, has lived with a pain throughout his body that is so excruciating, it can feel as if he’s wrapped in barbed wire, doused in gasoline and set on fire.

He has had a headache for the past five years: It’s in his eyes, in his gums, everywhere.

He stopped attending school in person in the eighth grade and has had to relearn to walk four times when the constant, unimaginable pain — caused by a rare neurological condition — became too much.

But the Highlands Ranch teen never stays down for too long.

His passion for baseball gets him out of bed each morning. His treatment regimen propels him through each day. His mom, younger sister and several friends who understand his reality bolster his spirits.

And fierce independence and unwavering self-discipline form a bedrock of inner strength and have led him to want to create a community for others in his shoes.

Six years ago, Patrick, with his mother’s help, started the nonprofit Ferocious Fighters to connect those dealing with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or CRPS. “CRPS is known as the suicide disease,” his mother Meg Boland said.

“Patrick was really in a bad place and didn’t want other people to feel as alone as he did.”

It has taken years of doctors’ appointments, experimental treatments and grit, but today, Patrick stands strong despite his physical suffering.

“I think I handle the pain really well at this point. But it took a really long time,” he said. “The pain doesn’t affect any functionality anymore — even if it’s as high as it can possibly be.”

The diagnosis Patrick was 8 when he jumped from a step in his front yard and twisted his left ankle. Four months later, he was still in excruciating pain. His ankle was cold to the touch. It turned purple.

“The doctors did an MRI and called me and said, ‘Everything is normal,’” Meg said. “And I said ‘Well, he hasn’t walked in four months.’ ...We went to the first physical therapy visit and within five minutes of being with Patrick, they said ‘This is CRPS.’” CRPS is a neurological condition that causes patients to experience constant nerve pain even after an injury has healed.

The illness is shrouded in mystery with very little known about its cause or how to treat it effectively, said Dr. Jeffery Kesten, one of Patrick’s physi-

tion to the disease, but there is virtually always an inciting event, such as

a minor injury or surgery.

Sometimes, patients will experience swelling, color or temperature changes and nail or hair growth changes.

“He used to describe it as being wrapped in barbed wire, doused in gasoline and set on fire,” said Meg. One pain scale, called the McGill Pain Index, ranks CRPS higher than amputation of a finger without anesthesia and unprepared childbirth.

After his initial diagnosis in 2012, Patrick continued to receive more and more diagnoses for other conditions sometimes related to CRPS, including a lacking immune system, weakened cartilage and ligaments, frequent muscle cramps and other issues.

He has been in and out of a wheelchair as the nerve pain and other symptoms spread to the rest of his body, as it often does for CRPS patients.

About 200,000 people in the U.S. experience the condition every year, according to the National Organization for Rare Disorders.

While specialists can offer a variety of treatments, there is no cure.

The best CRPS patients can hope for is finding subtle relief, functioning through the pain or, if they’re one of the lucky ones, remission. Patrick has never entered remission, he said.

People with a CRPS diagnosis also commonly experience suicidal ideations, Kesten said. That’s why the illness has been dubbed “the suicide disease,” according to the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Sydrome Association, a nonprofit supporting people with CRPS, sometimes known as RSDS. “It must be a horrible place to be,” Kesten said. “I would be concerned if a patient did not have mental health support in a true chronic pain condition because I don’t have a clue how it would not get to you and those around you.”

But Meg explained that as a teacher at a Douglas County charter school, she couldn’t afford to send every kid with the disease a package.

“He said, ‘Well, how does Make-AWish do it?’ And I said well, they’re a nonprofit. He said ‘Well, let’s do that,” she remembers.

In 2014, Patrick registered Ferocious Fighters as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Six years later, 1,253 kids in 19 countries are linked together through the organization. They range in age from newborns to 21-year-olds and live all over the world. Thirty kids are from Colorado, nearly all living along the Front Range. There are six in Douglas County.

That first year, the organization sent 70 care packages. In 2019, the number jumped to 350. So far, the organization has sent more than 1,000 packages total.

The packages include a blanket, a Ferocious Fighters T-shirt, a keychain, a hand-crocheted hat, a bumper sticker, a journal and rice hand warmers. All have flames on them to symbolize the burning pain that the kids experience.

They also include a hand-written, personalized letter from Patrick.

“I’m so sorry that you’re having such a great amount of sensitivity on your left leg,” he wrote in one letter.

“I know how hard that can be to deal with.”

Each letter ends with his sign-off: “Gentle Hugs, Patrick.”

There also are the quarterly encouragement letters and birthday cards. And every November, Ferocious Fighters organizes a virtual walk to encourage the kids to get moving, an important treatment for their disease.

The group also organizes dozens of support groups for kids and parents throughout the world.

In a note to Meg and Patrick, one mother expressed how much the package meant to her daughter.

“She will not be dancing at the dance or marching with the bands, she cannot keep up with friends and has missed out on several school trips and clubs,” read a note from Nina Nation, the mother of a 13-year-old in Nevada.

“But tonight, she got a package with her name on it, for her. She smiled. ... She opened the box and cherished everything inside piece by piece.”

Patrick has tried dozens of treatments throughout the years, including a host of prescription medications and experimental treatments. He’s been in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber; tried medical marijuana; taken ketamine pills; attempted painful “exposure therapy” sessions, which try to desensitize the patients’ nerves by vigorously rubbing them with a coarse blanket; seen chiropractors and massage therapists and more.

After eight years, Patrick has found a cocktail of supplements, medications and treatments that work for him. On top of his daily pills, he receives weekly immune boosters through an IV and, every three months, he undergoes an intense ketamine infusion used to treat chronic

One morning in February, Patrick entered Kesten’s infusion clinic wearing a Mac Miller T-shirt, a beanie and sweatpants. At 6 feet 3 inches, he towered over his mother and the infusion director who is administering his treatment. As she prepared the medication, the infusion director asked what pain he was feeling on a scale from one to 10.

“It’s at an eight, but that’s only in my back and the rest of the body is a five,” Patrick said. “So really, really good.”

His baseline of pain on a daily basis is about a seven out of 10, he said.

It’s Patrick’s second day of the infusion therapy and, already, he’s report-

ing improved comfort. The treatment isn’t without side effects, however. He vomited the night before and on the way into the clinic. In the past, he’s experienced hallucinations, inability to eat, anxiety and memory loss from the treatment.

Every baseball day is a good day When asked about what parts of his day-to-day life bring him comfort and joy, Patrick has two answers: medication and baseball.

Patrick, who plays a variety of positions including first base and pitcher, wants to play in college with the longterm goal of being on a professional team.

Even though his education is online through Colorado Connections Academy, Patrick plays baseball for Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch.

“Baseball keeps him alive,” his mom said. “This is his passion, this is what makes him want to get up in the morning.

To his coaches, Patrick is just

another athlete, said Ron Quintana, Mountain Vista’s head coach. What makes him stand out isn’t his constant battle with his health, but his deep discipline and fervent work ethic, he said.

“The other day we were working out and he didn’t have a ride to practice, ... so he ran from home,” Quintana said.

“When I ask him to do something, he will sprint to it.”

It may not look like it, but as Patrick trots around the baseball field during practice, helping wherever he can, he’s still in pain.

In February, before his most recent ketamine session, Patrick was experiencing the most intense pain he’s ever endured, he said.

But, he said, there’s a bright side.

“I’m at my worst right now. And I’m so happy to say that,” Patrick said before the treatment. “I’m still playing baseball, I’m being a normal teenager, I’m still hanging out with friends, suffering through school work, everything.”

operate like a restaurant. In these cases, food must be provided by a licensed retail food establishment.”

A business could partner with neighboring restaurants to provide food or partner with food trucks, according to the fact sheet. Light snacks, such as bar nuts, or things that are commercially prepared somewhere else and heated up in a microwave don’t count as food service.

Allowing patrons to bring their own takeout or order food from an app does not count either, the fact sheet says.

Any establishment that can adhere to the state’s guidelines and ensure access to food for on-premise consumption can open, the guidance from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment says.

With dire spread, restrictions could return The governor’s office’s fact sheet addresses the question: What if COVID-19 cases spike up after opening up more businesses?

“The governor won’t hesitate to take the necessary steps to protect the health and safety of Coloradans, including going back to the stay-at-home level” of restrictions or issuing other rules, the fact sheet says.

State guidance for restaurants opening dine-in service, from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, was released May 25. The state health department still encourages restaurants to continue pick-up and delivery service, including for alcohol.

For those that reopen indoor dine-in service, the following requirements apply: • Patrons can be served at 50% of the posted occupancy code limit and a maximum of 50 patrons.

• Patrons in different groups must be a minimum of 6 feet apart. Spacing of tables may need to be 6 feet or more to ensure proper physical distancing between parties.

• All employees must wear face coverings.

• “Ensure maximum ventilation” by opening windows and minimizing air conditioning to the extent possible.

• Deep clean and disinfect all shared surfaces between groups — at each turnover.

• Do not allow parties to mingle with each other, and limit party size to eight people or fewer.

• Encouraging, and preferably requiring, reservations. Waiting parties must not congregate in entrance areas and should wait in cars or outside until seating is available.

• Provide contactless payment or prepayment options whenever possible.

• Discontinue use of tablecloths, move to single-use or remove and replace laundered tablecloths between patrons.

• Use disposable single-use menus or menu boards, or create online menus for guests to review.

• Provide single-use or single-serving condiments.

• Disinfect restrooms every hour and provide hand sanitizer at check-in area and throughout venue.

The state encourages outdoor dine-in service, for which the following requirements must be met: • Patrons in different groups must be a minimum of 6 feet apart. Spacing of tables may need to be 6 feet or more to ensure proper distancing between different parties.

• All employees must wear face coverings.

• Staff must disinfect and deep-clean all shared surfaces between seatings.

The state’s Executive Order D 2020-049, which extended the closure of ski resorts, has expired, the release said. Ski resorts may work to secure approval from their local authorities in order to open.

Grad rules, seat time, other school issues to watch ‘Next year will be a disruptive year’

As school districts in Colorado spend the next weeks planning for how students might return to schools this fall, state leaders will have to provide guidance on several issues.

Although they haven’t issued final rules yet, it is likely many students in Colorado will not attend school in person every day of the school week. When students moved to learning online in March, state leaders passed executive orders to quickly address policy implications as a result.

But now, there will be more time to plan, consider those policy changes and get more input.

The state education commissioner has told the State Board of Education members that they will get a chance to weigh in on several decisions for the next school year.

“There’s really no mistaking that next year will be a disruptive year,” Commissioner Katy Anthes told the board this month. “We have a whole set of options.”

Below are some of the issues that educators will be watching: Attendance When schools went to remote learning this spring, Colorado allowed school districts to stop taking attendance. The department encouraged districts to track student participation, but did not require them to report to the state.

when districts and schools have different standards for counting a student as engaged as opposed to absent.

Some educators are also concerned that lax attendance rules didn’t motivate students nor encourage parents as much as going to school in person.

Prior to the COVID-19 shutdowns, the state factored the number of chronically absent students into school and district quality ratings.

If attendance rules change for the next school year, districts will need time to plan on how to take attendance, and track chronically absent students, especially if students continue learning from home even part-time.

Instructional time As with attendance, Colorado gave districts a blanket waiver on instructional time this spring. By law, Colorado school districts are supposed to offer students 1,080 hours of instruction or 160 days of learning per year.

Draft guidance issued in late May notes that the state is unlikely to give another such waiver. That would mean districts may have to do more to prove students are engaged in learning for certain periods of time. During remote learning in the last two months, some schools were requiring students to do work from home for only a couple hours per day.

At least one lawmaker, Paul Lundeen, a Republican from Monument, has expressed on social media an interest in making changes to permanently focus on “student performance, not seat time.”

ments are set by districts. But the state approved requirements that students, starting with next year’s seniors, show a minimum proficiency in English and math.

The state did not tell districts how students must show that proficiency, but instead offered a menu of ways districts could offer for students to prove that knowledge.

Among those options was passing the SAT with a certain score in their junior year. Since those tests were cancelled this spring, some district leaders have expressed concern that entering seniors have a limited time to pick another option to meet graduation requirements they previously expected to have already completed.

Other than tests, which may be interrupted again next year, students also may be able to enroll in an Advanced Placement or collegelevel course — if offered at their school. Districts could also choose to expand state-approved options for students, but time constraints for fitting that into a student’s schedule may still be a concern. The State Board of Education could also choose to postpone the graduation requirements for another year.

Accountability In the spring, Colorado cancelled state testing and school ratings.

Typically it issues annual quality ratings for schools and districts in the fall, based on spring tests.

Schools and districts that have consecutive low ratings risk having the state step in with orders for how to improve. This year, that won’t be a concern for schools and districts.

Teacher evaluations Another issue that caused a lot of uncertainty is whether teachers would have to be evaluated based on online teaching. The state did not require evaluations this year, but left decisions up to local districts and their teachers unions. The question will come up again next year.

Colorado’s controversial educator effectiveness law requires that all teachers be evaluated every year and that half of their evaluation be tied to student test results. Teachers need those evaluations to earn non-probationary status. Colorado lawmakers have proposed changes to Colorado’s teacher evaluation law in recent years, and some might try to bring it up again now that they’re back in session.

An author from Littleton is a finalist for the 79th annual Colorado Authors League Writing Award.

Catherine Berra is one of more than 90 authors league members who submitted published works for consideration this year, according to a news release. She is a finalist in the Poetry Collection and Cover Design categories for her book “Lucid Life: A Collection of Lyrical Poetry.”

The Colorado Authors League plans its first-ever virtual awards ceremony, which will be broadcast at 8 p.m. June 7 in a live Facebook Watch Party, on YouTube, and at coloradoauthors.org.

across several categories and genres, and one author with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Past Lifetime Achievement Award winners include poet Lois Beebe Hayna, children’s writer Phyllis Perry, and mystery writer Clive Cussler.

“We are certainly living in unusual times,” Barb Lundy, Colorado Authors League president, said in the news release. “In 1931, the founders of CAL wanted Rocky Mountain readers to know our Rocky Mountain authors. Volleyball coach waiting out shutdown Larry Deffenbaugh leads girls squad at Arapahoe

Larry Deffenbaugh is going into his 43rd year of coaching, including 33 as a volleyball coach.

He is third on the all-time wins list for Colorado high school girls volleyball coaches, with 540 victories.

Deffenbaugh, who has been the head volleyball coach at Strasburg, Bennett, Rangeview and Castle View, is now the coach at Arapahoe High School in Centennial for girls volleyball, and is going through a first with all the restrictions in place because of the COVOID-19 pandemic.

He keeps in contact with his Arapahoe team through an app and plans to send out information to parents in the near future.

“What’s the old saying — safety first,” said Deffenbaugh. “It is what it is and it’s a very surreal time right now. I know some parents are chomping at the bit and some maybe not so much. Some may want to get their kids going again, some are a little leery and some are ‘no way.’

“It’s just like the virus itself. It has manifested itself in different ways.

And we know people think in different ways as well. Certainly all of us have gotten down a little bit during this time. It is a different beast, so to speak. We’re frustrated but we can get outside a little bit at least.”

Deffenbaugh says communication with his players is important.

“I send out a memo pretty much on time every week,” he explained. “I send out some positive quotes, some information on what is going on, where we are at as far as sports are concerned.

On MaxPreps there is a lady and she has a bunch of workouts. So I send them a couple workouts and say they can alter them or do them every day.

“And then we are trying to create some simple competitions, Send me your times on this and see how you are doing. There is a lot to deal with here and they just got done with school. There’s a lot of their plate right now. We are encouraging them that this is the time to get going again because we don’t know what we don’t know. Let’s try to get in shape physically and mentally and communicate with each other.”

Deffenbaugh doesn’t know for sure if there will be a fall volleyball season.

I’ve seen all the guidelines and there are phases. There’s a phase one, phase two, phase three and phase four. I hope we can do something down the road if the kids want to, but most importantly, parents and athletes need to understand that if we are going to do this, it has to be done safely and the guidelines need to be followed strictly.

The parents, athletes and coaches have to be patient.

“I don’t know what Littleton Public Schools is doing right now. I think they are putting together a task force to look at this. But I don’t know where

we are. We don’t have any dates in mind yet. I’m waiting to hear from Littleton Public Schools and my athletic director Pat McCabe for guidance and direction to move forward optimistically one step at a time. Right now things are pretty much up in the air.

We all need to take a deep breath and be patient. The CHSAA is trying to put together plans for fall sports. That looks different for all sports. There are a lot of parts to this engine.”

Deffenbaugh is optimistic about playing in the fall.

“It is OK to be optimistic, seeing the stuff I am seeing from CHSAA,” he said. “However I have to think about not only our players’ safety, where they have been and their parents, but also our coaches’ safety. I imagine everybody will be wearing masks, that’s in the guidelines, I can’t control what somebody else is doing, but in this environment, we have to be able to control it. We have to follow the guidelines.

“We are in one of the toughest leagues in the state. We have a good group of girls coming up. We have two seniors this year, so we will be young.

Amelia Davis and Myki McNutt will be good captains and leaders. We’ll get better as the season goes on. We will appreciate the things we take for granted when this is over.”

Six Colorado artists have felt the impact that the cancellation or postponement of art festivals has had on their art careers, according to a news release, and have planned a virtual art fair.

Using Facebook Events, artists Liz Covert, Lauri Dunn, Victoria Eubanks, Amelia Furman, Katie Hoffman and Rita Valis have found a way to connect with their audiences. Artists will offer behind-thescenes views of their studios and artistic process, and some will set up displays. Viewers can ask questions about their work, purchase artwork and have it delivered to their home, the release said.

He and a group of Crutches 4 Africa volunteers travel to Africa, on average, twice a year to make distributions at number of various sites within the vicinity of a destination.

The most recent trip took place from Feb. 28 to March 19. Though the arrival of COVID-19 in Africa “threw a wrench” in the distributions scheduled in Uganda for March 13 and 14, all seven of the U.S. volunteers made it home safely and self-quarantined for the 14-day period, Talbot said. No one had contracted the virus, he added.

Nicolas Ricca of Jefferson County’s Applewood community near Golden traveled to Africa for the first time during that trip.

“It was a completely different experience than anything I had done before,” Ricca said, adding that the only foreign travel he had done prior to the Crutches 4 Africa trip was to Canada.

Ricca met Talbot through church, was inspired by his story and got involved with Crutches 4 Africa about a year ago.

“The worst part of the trip,” Ricca said, “was not having enough equipment for everyone in need. But, luckily, there will be more going out.”

Throughout 2019, seven distributions were made in developing countries, and as of the end of 2019, Crutches 4 Africa had donated about 133,000 mobility devices.

“The good hearts of people are shin-

ing through,” Talbot said.

Now, the organization is working toward accomplishing a goal of getting one million pieces of mobility equipment to those in need.

The mobility equipment truly provides its recipients with opportunities to provide for their families and be a contributing member of society in ways they would not otherwise have the means, Talbot said. For example, if a person is disabled and immobile, they are not able to travel to nearby villages or towns to sell their goods, he said, much less gather the resources and/or produce the goods.

“We have seen people in such harsh conditions, it rips my heart out. And while you can’t fix everything,” Talbot said, “mobility is freedom.”
