Main Street gears up for al fresco evenings ‘Weekends on Main’ would allow sidewalk dining downtown

Littleton’s slate of summer festivals may have been canceled this year to contain the spread of COVID-19, but there could still be fun downtown events on the horizon.

City officials are moving ahead with plans for “Weekends on Main” -- days and evenings where Main Street through downtown would be closed to cars, with bars and restaurants allowed to expand seating onto sidewalks.

The goal is to buoy eateries facing tight restrictions for in-person dining under new state guidelines, and hopefully generate some foot traffic for retailers and other businesses.

Public support has so far been strong -- a whopping 95% of more than 2,000 respondents to a city survey supported the idea.

There are still details to be hammered out. City officials are in ongoing talks with Tri-County Health Department to settle on regulations and logistics to ensure sanitation and social distancing, City Manager Mark Relph said at a May 19 city council study session.

If approved, Littleton would join numerous other metro-area towns embracing outdoor dining, including Parker, Arvada and Boulder.

Though times and dates have not yet been finalized, proposals have ranged as high as from Friday evening through Sunday evening, every weekend until Labor Day, starting as soon as May 29.

With restaurateurs looking at strict limits on indoor seating, business leaders say the plan could make a big difference. Though in-person dining rules hadn’t been finalized by the state health department as of May 22, chances are good restaurants will only be allowed to seat a fraction of their pre-COVID numbers indoors.

“Restaurants won’t make it on that,” said Greg Reinke, head of the Historic

Reinke said the idea is to turn Main Street into a mall-like atmosphere, perhaps with retailers setting up tables and booths outside to supplement their indoor activity.

Reinke said he knows there are concerns that attendees won’t abide by sanitation and distancing guidelines, but he said it’s time to give people a chance to do the right thing.

“My brother fought COVID,” Reinke said. “He was on a ventilator. We nearly lost him. This thing is no joke, but these restaurants and retailers risked everything they have to keep people safe. I don’t care what anyone says, I believe in the human spirit. We can do this.”

The idea is a bright spot in a dark time for restaurant owners like Keven Kinaschuk, who runs McKinner’s Pizza Bar. He’s been scraping by on takeout service since March, and said the looming regulations for indoor dining don’t offer a lot of hope.

COVID, Kinaschuk said he’ll likely only be able to seat about 30 inside under new regulations.

Further, he said, the yet-to-be-finalized regulations place an enormous burden on restaurant staff to enforce what are likely highly unpopular regulations like seating groups no larger than six, breaking up congregating groups, and potentially even making guests sign in so they can be tracked in case of an outbreak.

In light of that, the outdoor dining idea could ease the burden.

“I’m hoping it’s a big success,” Kinaschuk said. “For that matter, why stop at the end of summer? We have great weather -- we could do this darn near until December.”

Not everyone is thrilled. Ruth Graham, who owns Ancient Art Healing Center on Main Street, said she worries the idea will further damage businesses like hers that don’t sell food or impulse items.

“Those of us that are destination businesses, how are our customers supposed to get here, especially if this eats up all the parking?” said Graham, who sits on the board of the Littleton Business Chamber, which supports

the sidewalk dining idea. “I support downtown events, but all weekend, every weekend? It’s just too much.”

Graham said downtown events also inevitably leave trash all over the sidewalk, which business owners wind up cleaning. Rather than shut down the whole street, perhaps restaurants could expand into parking lots and alleys, and leave the street as a thoroughfare with parking.

“There are other options here,” Graham said. “At least the restaurants have been able to do takeout. Most of the retailers and businesses have simply been shut down. We haven’t made any money in months, and now they’re going to prolong the damage.”

Reinke said he knows there are risks, but he’ll encourage people to patronize everyone downtown.

“We’ve got to support the restaurants, because that’s what bring the bulk of people down here,” he said.

“Without them, we’re all toast. I’ll tell folks, bring an extra $20 and buy a gift card from one of our retailers to give away at Christmas. This is a big experiment. By the end of summer, I’ll either be tarred and feathered or I can run for president.”

Food bank ‘feeding the masses’ amid plunging food donations

With tens of thousands of Denverarea residents out of work amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Integrated Family Community Services, one of the area’s largest food banks, has seen its client load skyrocket.

The southwest Denver organization is now serving up to 3,200 people a month, a 1,600% increase from normal for this time of year, said outreach director Todd McPherson.

“The floodgates opened,” McPherson said. “We’re truly feeding the masses here.”

As the ranks of the needy swelled, IFCS did what it has done for more than 50 years: Adapt.

While clients normally grab a cart and “shop” the food bank’s shelves, the organization has switched to prepackaged food boxes, sent out the door on a conveyor belt.

Clients no longer must fill out forms, or prove need or residency to receive food.

“The last thing we want to do is put someone through the gauntlet of red tape,” McPherson said. “Now, you call, tell us you’re coming, pull up, and boom, you’ve got your food. Doesn’t matter who you are. There’s nothing to prove. Hungry people are hungry people.”

The food bank is a godsend to Jose Hernandez, a father of five who was making his second visit to IFCS on May 21.

“It’s an awful feeling” to see bare cabinets, said Hernandez, a countertop installer who has been out of work since March and has had a hard time accessing unemployment benefits. “As a father, you feel that big responsibility to provide. These guys are keeping my kids fed. I’m really grateful.”

In order to keep its often elderly volunteers safe, IFCS sent everyone

home except eight paid staff members, who are handling the deluge themselves.

At the same time, the institutions that normally run food drives -churches, schools, offices -- are closed.

Monetary donations have dwindled as people still working are watching their budgets. With bans on large gatherings, IFCS is unable to hold inperson fundraising events that net big checks from philanthropists.

With the flow of donations drying up, IFCS beefed up its relationship with Food Bank of the Rockies, bringing in food by the pallet instead of the bag. Next, they struck deals with food manufacturers and school districts whose normal avenues of distribution are interrupted.

The arrangements mean some people receive odd items -- five-pound sacks of meatballs, jumbo-size pork roasts, sacks of marinara sauce meant for cafeterias -- but the important thing is they’re going home with food.

“We’re hoping people can share with others in need,” McPherson said.

Thanks to other arrangements, clients also receive boxes of fresh produce, and parents can request diapers, formula and milk. Eggs and bread are on the menu too.

To make sure hungry families receive well-rounded nutrition, IFCS is also raiding its stockpile of shelfstable foods intended for the winter holidays.

“We don’t know what we’ll do come Thanksgiving and Christmas,” McPherson said. “That food is all flying out the door.”

In order to make room for food stockpiles, the group’s clothing bank is suspended. The status of other programs, like school supply distribution in late summer, is unclear.

The future may be uncertain, but for now, IFCS staff are simply grateful they can help keep bellies full, McPherson said.

“Some people tell us they’re embarrassed to be here,” McPherson said.

“They say they feel dirty coming to a food bank. Why? Everyone needs help sometimes, and these are strange times. That’s what we’re here for.”

At O’Toole’s, pandemic puts a twist on spring tradition Masks required, customer count restricted at beloved garden center, but heart remains

Spring days at Littleton’s O’Toole’s Garden Center are about the experience.

Stroll in beneath the hanging baskets, grab a bag of popcorn, and let the stress of life melt away as you peruse the greenhouses — and try to get out without spending too much money.

But in the age of COVID-19, the O’Toole’s experience faces some changes. Normally the store bursts at the seams on weekends in May, but not this year.

Customers are restricted to 30 at a time inside the store to maintain social distancing, meaning the line can stretch across the parking lot.

Masks are required — no exceptions.

Dogs must wait outside. The popcorn machine is off until further notice.

The restrictions aren’t fun, said general manager and plant guru Chris Ibsen, but they’re the right thing to do.

“A packet of seeds isn’t worth someone’s life,” Ibsen said from behind an

O’Toole’s bandana folded into a face mask. “These precautions are about safety. It’s what the majority wants, and it’s what the governor has asked us to do, so we’re abiding.”

By and large, customers are simply happy to be able to be back in the store, and the shelves are as wellstocked with flowers, veggies and herbs as ever.

“This is a place of refuge for people,” Ibsen said. “We love our customers and they love us back. If we

told people they had to hop on one leg to get in here, they would do it.”

The garden center also offers a new curbside pickup service that allows customers to call in the morning and pick up their items in the afternoon.

It’s not without its kinks, but customers are lining up to use it.

“You’re not getting the hand-holding you might normally get with our staff, but you’re getting what you need,” Ibsen said.

O’Toole’s is an important com-

munity gathering place in times of crisis, Ibsen said. The store shut down completely in April, which felt counterintuitive.

“You want to give people a place to get away from things,” Ibsen said.

“Our customer count spiked after 9/11. It’s hard to recognize your neighbor with a face mask on, but it’s what we have to do for now. On the plus side, with only 30 people in here at a time, you can have the place to yourself.”

Arapahoe County Fair canceled for 2020 Event was scheduled for July 23-26; 4-H may hold limited competition

The 2020 Arapahoe County Fair has been canceled due to concerns over spreading COVID-19, officials announced on May 20.

Initially scheduled for July 23 through 26, the fair was canceled by the Board of County Commissioners after consultation with event management, the county’s Office of Emergency Management and the Tri-County Health Department.

“Establishing the necessary social distancing requirements within the midway, the ticketing booths, the food and beverage booths, as well as in spectator areas, proved to be unworkable given the constraints of the site,” read a news release in part.

The fair, held at the county fairgrounds on Quincy Avenue east of E-470, drew a record 27,000 attendees last year.

Organizers are hoping to host a “limited” 4-H competition and a vir-

tual livestock auction, though details have not yet been hammered out, according to the release.

“It is critical that we continue to support Arapahoe County’s 4-H youth programs and honor all their hard work year-round,” said Commissioner Jeff Baker, who represents eastern Arapahoe County. “These kids are the future of Colorado and they deserve recognition.”

The fairgrounds were repurposed into an “Alternate Care Facility” in March in anticipation of a swell of COVID-19 cases, but the facility has not been used. The facility will remain on standby to receive patients indefinitely.

“This was a very difficult decision for the Board, but in the end we decided that the potential health risks to our staff, volunteers and the general public still are too great to allow us to commit to holding this very large gathering in July,” said Arapahoe County Board Chair Nancy Sharpe.

“The Arapahoe County Fair is a 114-year-old community tradition, one we treasure. The sacrifices we are all having to make through this unprecedented health crisis are profound.

But we will get through this together — and the fair will return with ‘Fair fun for Everyone’ in 2021.”

Testing eligibility expands to all with symptoms Coloradans may have free access to COVID-19 testing whether insured or not

After months of limits on who can undergo testing to detect COVID-19 — along with test-supply shortages that also stood in Coloradans’ way — the state announced that test capacity has grown to include the general public.

“If you take anything away from today’s briefing, it’s this: If you have symptoms of COVID-19, consult your medical provider and get tested,” Gov. Jared Polis said at a May 18 news conference.

The state made the policy change due to increased access to testing supplies, according to a news release from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Polis also encouraged health care workers, first responders and “essential” or critical workers who interact with the public to get tested even if they don’t have symptoms. That includes grocery store employees, Polis said, and nursing home workers, according to a governor’s office news release.

“In health care, in senior facilities and other areas … even if you’re asymptomatic and if you have an hour

or two, it’d be a smart thing to do,” Polis said.

More than 35 testing sites were open to the public across Colorado as of May 18, including locations supported by the state lab and ones operated by private providers. The state’s map of testing sites is located at tinyurl.com/ ColoradoTestingMap. An appointment and doctor’s note are required at some test sites, and who can be tested at each site varies, although most accept the general public with symptoms. Asymptomatic Coloradans can be tested at some locations. See the list and contact information at tinyurl.com/TestingLocationList.

The map does not include all private test locations, only those that have submitted their sites for inclusion in the map, according to the state’s website.

For Coloradans who need to isolate or quarantine themselves in relation to a positive COVID-19 test, the state compiled resources available, including access to food and financial help.

Does testing cost?

Because of federal legislation, people with any kind of private health insurance should have free access to the COVID-19 test — along with any doctor visits associated with getting the test — with no co-pays, deductibles or co-insurance charged, according to

Coloradans should check with their health care provider to be sure, though.

For Coloradans with Medicare, all of the costs are covered if a doctor orders a COVID-19 test, according to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Under Colorado’s Medicaid program — Health First Colorado — and the Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+), all the costs of testing and the doctors’ visits associated with getting tested are covered, according to the state Department of Health Care Policy and Financing.

For the uninsured Uninsured Coloradans should contact the state Health Care Policy Department at 303-866-2993 to ask about options. To apply for Medicaid

and Child Health Plan Plus, visit coloradopeak.secure.force.com.

“Whether you have Medicaid or Medicare or private insurance or no health care insurance, cost is not a barrier — there is no copay, there is no out-of-pocket for testing,” Polis said at the May 18 news conference.

A government program to reimburse health care providers and facilities for testing and treatment of COVID-19 for uninsured individuals provides funds to eligible providers, according to Scott Kodish, a spokesman for the federal Health Resources and Services Administration.

Health care providers can request reimbursement and will be reimbursed generally at Medicare rates, subject to available funding, Kodish said. For patients served by those providers, there are no charges to uninsured patients.

The program covers testing and testing-related health care visits to an office; an urgent care or emergency room; a drive-up or drive-thru testing site; or via telehealth, Kodish said.

It also covers treatment for COVID-19 if necessary, according to Kodish.

But Kodish’s agency has not released the names or number of health care providers that have applied for or received reimbursement through the program, he said.

Uninsured Coloradans should contact the testing location to be sure of potential costs.

Alleged Tri-County vandal has attention-seeking past Pesch made headlines in 2017 for apparent false murder confession

The man who police say repeatedly vandalized Tri-County Health Department’s Aurora offices and threatened staff over the COVID-19 shutdowns has a long history of attention-seeking behavior involving law enforcement — including confessing to a high-profile murder case in Elbert County that ended with dropped charges in 2019.

Dan Pesch, 36, was arrested by Aurora police on May 18 on suspicion of one count of criminal mischief, a class 5 felony, and misdemeanor counts of harassment and defacing property.

Pesch remained in custody at the Arapahoe County jail as of May 21.

His bond, originally set at $50,000, was reduced to $5,000 on May 20. His next scheduled court appearance is set for June 23.

According to an affidavit in the case, police believe Pesch threw rocks through windows at Tri-County Health’s offices at Chambers Road and Hampden Avenue in Aurora on three occasions — on April 15, April 18 and April 20 — and followed up with threatening messages from his personal Facebook account, railing against the agency’s stay-at-home order in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tri-County Health serves Arapahoe, Douglas and Adams counties.

“Best part of your policy is that I can keep vandalizing the (expletive) out of your building and the cops won’t do (expletive) about it lol,” said one message on Pesch’s Facebook account directed to Tri-County Health.

“Spray paint and broken windows are just the beginning (expletive).”

Pesch returned several times in early May to write vulgar messages on the building’s doors, police say, following up with more Facebook messages.

Stakeout leads to arrest Undercover officers said they staked out the building and arrested Pesch after encountering him outside the building on May 8. Officers transported him to an Aurora hospital, where staff gave him two doses of a sedative because of his “combative behavior,” according to the affidavit.

Pesch at that point was arrested on suspicion of failure to obey a lawful order and resisting arrest, according to an Aurora Police spokesperson, but he was released from the hospital and not taken to jail because of

COVID-19 restrictions.

The building was vandalized again on May 11. An Aurora police detective called Pesch, who reportedly ranted against Tri-County’s stay-athome order.

Pesch told the detective that TriCounty officials “deserve to pay” for the impacts of the shutdown order, according to the affidavit: “They’re just not getting the message,” Pesch told the detective. “So, I just have to keep increasing the intensity.”

The next day, Tri-County Health received another message from Pesch’s Facebook account: “Cops can’t be posted at your building every night.

I’ll get you, you (expletive). All of you.”

Officials defend reporting of COVID-19 death toll Polis, health department respond to GOP lawmaker’s claim of inflation

After a Colorado lawmaker questioned the state’s reporting of how many Coloradans have died from COVID-19, Gov. Jared Polis said he was frustrated with the discrepancy as well.

When Polis found out that people who tested positive but died of something else were included in the state’s death total, he said officials should report that total to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as is standard, but should also report to the public the lower number of deaths due directly to COVID-19, the governor said at a May 20 news conference.

In a May 15 news release, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment explained that its data included deaths among all people who had COVID-19 at the time of death.

That included deaths for which “the cause or causes may not have been attributed to COVID-19 on the death certificate,” the release said.

“This is the standard way states report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”

“We know this virus can be deadly and can complicate other serious medical conditions and hasten death,” Eric France, chief medical officer at the state health department, said in the release. “As public health practitioners, we need to look at data that helps us understand disease transmission and protect people.”

A day earlier, a Douglas County state lawmaker requested that the area’s district attorney investigate the state health department, accusing the agency of illegally changing death certificates.

State Rep. Mark Baisley, a Republican from Roxborough Park, made the request to 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler in a letter dated May 14, after a family forwarded Baisley a letter from a Centennial senior living facility that raised the question. The letter was from the senior living facility to residents.

“Falsely inflating the number of deaths due to COVID-19 adversely impacts the professional reputation of nursing homes, hospitals and health care workers while creating undue fear for families,” Baisley’s letter to Brauchler said.

The letter from Someren Glen, a senior living community with

multiple levels of care, stated that the state health department planned to “override some of our attending physician’s rulings and reclassify some resident passings.”

In the health department’s news release, the department “emphasized that it does not unilaterally change information on death certificates and does not question or try to change a physician’s diagnosis or causes-of-death determination.”

It is not uncommon for state officials to use definitions that differ from death certificate coding, Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist, told reporters on a May 20 news conference call.

As of May 15, the state reported 1,150 deaths among people who have COVID-19. The number of deaths confirmed to have been caused by COVID-19 was 878 as of May 9, as reported by the CDC, according to the news release. The data the state shares online, and to the CDC, is shared for disease-tracking purposes, the release said.

As of May 21 — reporting numbers received through May 20 — the Colorado totals had grown to 1,310 deaths among people who had COVID-19 and 1,062 deaths due to COVID-19.

“I think the more information we can provide, the greater the public trust, and we always want to err on the side of (transparency),” Polis said at the May 20 news conference. The state’s COVID-19 website “didn’t have racial data; we added that. It didn’t have enough geographic data; we added that.”

Neither method of counting deaths accounts for “people that we missed altogether, that probably died from COVID that aren’t included in any number because they haven’t been confirmed by a coroner or autopsy,” Polis said at a May 18 news conference.

He added: “The only number that’s not reported are the ones we don’t know about because we don’t know about them.”

The DA’s office announced May 15 that it would look into whether any death certificates were “willfully and falsely altered,” according to a release from the office. Misdemeanor charges could be filed if so.

The DA’s office had not given any updates about the case as of the morning of May 22, according to Vikki Migoya, spokeswoman for the office. She did not confirm whether the DA’s office was investigating the claim at that time.

“As always, at the conclusion of any legal proceedings, District Attorney Brauchler will be eager to answer any and all questions,” the office’s May 15 release said. “The integrity of the judicial process must come first.”

About five years ago, preacher Mark Gomez delivered a sermon about brokenness in communities.

He and his wife felt passionately that families with strained relationships should be put back together.

When a friend adopted a baby, the couple heard about the importance of foster families and adoption, and that resonated with Gomez and his wife, Chastity.

“Statistics were blowing my mind about how many kids are in the (foster) system,” said Chastity Gomez, who, like her husband, didn’t have exposure to the system until then.

Across Arapahoe, Douglas and Jefferson counties, more than 1,000 children are in foster care and 40 children are awaiting an adoptive family on average at any given time, according to Arapahoe County’s website — and the counties have less than 150 foster families to try to meet that need.

The foster system provides temporary housing for youth who are separated from parents by local officials due to neglect, addiction, domestic violence or other problems in a family. Children in the system can live with relatives or foster parents, and it can involve group homes, shelters or other facilities, according to the federal Department of Health and Human Services.

Youth in poverty and racial minorities are over-represented, and older kids have a harder time finding homes because they tend to have more significant trauma, Mark Gomez said.

“There’s an overwhelming number of teens who they can’t get placement for,” Gomez said.

The Gomezes — married for 18 years — started down the road to becoming a foster family about half a decade ago, trudging through paperwork, training and a house inspection. Officials interviewed them and their biological children to see how stable they were as a family.

After about six months of preparation, they started as a foster family in August 2015. The Gomezes, both 41, live in west Centennial.

Mark is a pastor at Sola Church in Littleton and an IT consultant full-time, and Chastity works for a real-estate company.

In the past five years, they’ve fostered nearly 20 children and youths — at one time having eight kids under one roof, including their four biological kids — and several kids have only stayed with them for up to a couple weeks. Almost all of them were able to find a family member to live with, Chastity Gomez said.

They entered into foster care not with adoption in mind, but one girl, Aubriana, came to them when she was about 10 days old in foster care.

Aubriana is now 4 years old, and the Gomezes have “an amazing relationship with her mom,” Chastity Gomez said.

“It’s just amazing to see how far she’s changed and how resilient she’s been,” Gomez said. She added: “Fostering is more than helping these kids — it’s showing glimpses of what family and community could be.

Westminster nurses’ experience in NJ ER offers perspective on COVID-19 ‘I hope no one ever has to see that, again’

Emergency room nurse Katie Adkins said she was reluctant to tell any specific stories from her three weeks working in a New Jersey emergency room, treating dying COVID-19 patients.

It’s not that she doesn’t have the stories or doesn’t know how to tell them. And it’s not that she doesn’t want to talk about it.

“I really don’t know if the general public is ready to hear about how bad it could have really been,” Adkins said.

Adkins witnessed the disease ravage patients firsthand, and watched it withstand just about any treatment medical professionals had for it. She watched doctors come in and try alternate treatments and watched patients die while their families could only visit via their smart phone.

“We did literally everything we could,” she said. “We exhausted the rule book, basically, on keeping some of these guys alive. And we didn’t win, most of the time.”

Even the ones who survived found their lives profoundly changed.

“It’s the amount of death, it’s the amount of lives forever impacted,” Adkins said. “You don’t just get over it if you’ve been on a ventilator for 30 days. It’s going to do permanent damage to your lungs and permanent damage to the rest of your body.”

An honor Adkins was one of the group of 34 nurses that flew out of Colorado April 21 to spend three weeks helping at three New Jersey hospitals.

“It was an honor. Those guys went through hell before we got there,” she said. “And to be there and to be able to stand beside them as they recovered and put their ER back together, it was an honor.”

An emergency room nurse at Westminster’s St. Anthony North, Adkins was stationed at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey. It’s a hospital roughly the size of Denver’s Presbyterian St. Luke, with between 40 and 50 emergency room beds.

The difference, she said, was that COVID-19 made it impossible to treat those beds like emergency room beds. The pandemic forced the hospital to treat the emergency room, along with the entire hospital, as one big, slow-moving intensive care unit.

Where a normal emergency room visit lasts two hours for a patient, these visits lasted several days. And emergency room nurses are used to treating patients and either releasing them to go home or sending them on to another unit for more treatment.

Instead, these patients stayed, right where they were.

From really bad to just bad Adkins said the cases of COVID-19 had peaked just before the Colorado

nurses arrived, so their role was to give the New Jersey nurses a break.

“When we got there, it was still pretty rough,” she said. “Actually, the day we arrived they saw kind of a turn from things being really bad to just being bad.”

New Jersey, with its proximity to New York, has been particularly hard hit by COVID-19, with more than 150,000 confirmed cases as of May 21 and more than 10,000 deaths.

Colorado has fared better so far,

with almost 23,000 confirmed cases and 1,300 deaths. As of May 21, 3,955 Coloradoans had been hospitalized with COVID-19.

The Colorado nurses were stationed at four hospitals spread around the Garden State: Trinitas in Elizabeth, where Adkins was; St. Peter’s Healthcare System in New Brunswick; and the Paterson and Wayne campuses of St. Joseph’s Health.

Five of the nurses, including Adkins, came from the St. Anthony North Health Campus in Westminster while 27 came from Penrose-St. Francis Health Services in Colorado Springs. One nurse came from the St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo and St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco.

Each worked an emergency roomstandard schedule of four 12-hour days, returning to a mostly-closed hotel when they were off-shift. Adkins checked in with her Colorado family daily, having video chats with her 4-year-daughter, waiting for her next shift to start.

A whole body killer Adkins said she was surprised to see how all -ncompassing the diseases is. One of the main complications was the high incidence of sepsis, a condition that occurs when the body reacts to an infection by flooding the blood stream with various chemicals. How Colorado lawmakers closed a $3 billion shortfall Funding for K-12 schools, colleges slashed by budget panel

To address a $3 billion shortfall, Colorado lawmakers made a series of drastic spending cuts and moved close to finalizing a state budget battered by the coronavirus and the paralyzed economy.

The legislative budget committee on May 22 cut $448 million from K-12 education — a 10% cut compared to a year ago. The actual cut is closer to $577 million for school districts, in part from increased costs this year.

Earlier last week, lawmakers slashed $493 million from the state’s colleges and universities, a total that represents 58% of the higher education budget.

In addition, the committee approved a 5% reduction — totaling $111 million — in the set-aside for state employee salaries may lead to furloughs, eliminating vacant positions or hiring freezes. The draft spending plan also is predicated on forthcoming legislation that will remove unspecified tax breaks to generate about $100 million in new revenue.

“We have held out just about as long as we could,” the Commerce City lawmaker said, “and we have made painful reductions in every department … with the bipartisan goal that we minimize as much as possible the impacts to K-12 education.”

to make the necessary cuts to balance the budget.

The total discretionary spending from the general fund for the fiscal year that starts July 1 is north of $11 billion, but the size of the entire budget — once federal dollars and other sources are included — is not yet settled.

The committee attempted to make targeted cuts, rather than across-theboard reductions, and tried to protect spending on education and vulnerable populations. Outside groups lobbied fiercely to protect their priorities, and liberal organizations pushed for increasing taxes and fees rather than cuts. In the end, lawmakers — most of whom wore masks and talked in muffled voices inside an empty committee room — made the bulk of the significant decisions behind closed doors with little public discussion.

The political pressure made combing through the budget an arduous exercise and led to plenty of tears from lawmakers and legislative staff as they pared spending back to levels more closely aligned with the 2016-17 fiscal year, in effect negating many of the priorities Gov. Jared Polis and Democrats approved in the 2019 session.

“I’m grieving every time I turn a page,” said Rep. Julie McCluskie, a budget writer and Democrat from Dillon, at one point.

At press time, the committee expected to make the final decisions ahead of the budget package’s introduction when the legislative session resumes after a 10-week hiatus because of the coronavirus.

Entering the final week of negotiations, the budget committee still needed to cut $2 billion after taking two weeks to trim along the edges, and at the last minute, maneuvered to close an $800 million gap.

The education cuts are softened by federal CARES Act money — a crucial tool lawmakers used to lower the budget deficit. Polis issued an executive order directing $500 million for K-12 education and $450 million toward higher education from the state’s share of the federal aid package. The money can’t backfill the budget shortfall, but it does offset some cuts.

It remains unclear how the reduced

spending on classrooms impacts the constitutional debt the state owes school districts — under the so-called negative factor. The factor appears to double to more than $1 billion, but Democratic lawmakers suggest it will stay essentially flat once the federal aid money is factored into the equation.

State Sen. Bob Rankin, a budget writer and Republican from Carbondale, said the committee “worked together to do our best to maintain funding for our teachers and our kids.”

To ease the burden, the Democraticled Joint Budget Committee picked a more optimistic economic forecast presented by the governor’s Office of State Planning and Budgeting to serve as the mold for the spending plan.

The committee typically uses the one that shows less money to spend but deviated this year. The governor’s forecast estimated that lawmakers could spend $442 million, or 2%, more over the current and next fiscal years than if they picked the conservative projections from legislative economists.

The budget also lowered the required general fund reserve in the current year to 3.4% from 7.25% to allow for more spending. The committee decided to keep at least a small cushion in case the state’s fiscal outlook is worse than expected. For the next fiscal year, the unspent money set aside is 3.8% of total general fund spending.

To find additional dollars, budget writers sorted through numerous other bank accounts and transferred more than $400 million into the general fund, a common practice in bad budget years to reduce the size of the cuts.

The transfers included BEST school construction money, assets in the unclaimed property trust fund, and oil and gas severance taxes. The two Republicans on the committee objected to some of the transfers because the money was dedicated to specific purposes, but the moves still advanced.

A major source of additional revenue for discretionary spending came from marijuana taxes. The $136 million diversion means legalized marijuana will help prop up core government services more than ever.

One other action that is expected to help: The General Assembly is poised to declare a fiscal emergency soon after it returns, an action that allows lawmakers to divert tobacco tax dollars designated for other purposes under Amendment 35. The committee approved taking $17.8 million — out of the estimated $123 million in the account — and put it toward efforts to control the spread of the COVID-19 disease.

But the additional revenue didn’t negate the need for cuts to government programs. The other major spending cuts approved in the final days included:  Suspending the senior homestead exemption, a property tax break for seniors and disabled veterans that amounts to $164 million next year  Diverting $50 million earmarked for transportation projects and pulling a related bonding referendum from the 2020 ballot SEE SHORTFALL, P19

‘In This Together’ initiative helps build social closeness STAFF REPORT

The coronavirus pandemic has driven home the message that our physical and mental health are not separate.

To combat the loneliness, isolation and stress, and to get through the pandemic with healthier minds, Mental Health Colorado has started “In This Together” as a way for Coloradans to connect with people and just to chat, according to a news release.

Residents can sign up on Mental Health Colorado’s website, and they will receive a supportive call just for the therapeutic sake of oldfashioned conversation.

“As a society, we shouldn’t have settled on the term ‘social distancing,’ which is the exact opposite of what’s best for our mental health right now,” Mental Health Colorado President and CEO Vincent Atchity said in the news release.

“What we need is social closeness, solidarity, and support. In This Together is a way to create a little bit of social contact, all over the state, with a friendly phone call.”

In This Together is for everyone, including older adults living alone, people who just recovered from

a surgery, young people living in remote parts of the state, and new parents trying to put workable routines in place. When people listen to and support each other, they feel and do better managing their way through challenges and have a better feeling for what it means to be strong and united as a community, the release says.

The shame of talking about mental health has taken a notable shift during this pandemic. It is not as uncommon now to ask a coworker or neighbor about their mental health or to video-chat just to admit that one is feeling lonely or anxious. This is one positive outcome of the pandemic, the release says.

Atchity hopes these behaviors will continue long after the threat of the virus is gone.

“People don’t have to go through this, or any, hard time alone,” Atchity said in the news release.

“We need to be increasingly understanding and compassionate with ourselves and others when it comes to our mental health. Creating healthier minds is a cultural shift and an ongoing work in progress. And everybody can do it.”

Experts suggest that the impact of loneliness and isolation on our health is as detrimental as smoking or obesity. Anxiety is higher than usual worldwide due to the economic and health impacts of COVID-19. Our communities must be prepared to deal with a secondary pandemic of mental health and substance use concerns, the release said.

Many are predicting that the curve of infections will precede a curve of mental health needs.

With a revised 2020 policy platform addressing pandemic response and recovery, Mental Health Colorado aims to flatten the latter curve.

“There are many uncertainties right now, but what we do know is that all Coloradans — and everyone in the world — now have a much keener understanding of the vital way in which our mental and our physical health are connected,” Atchity said in the release.

After three seasons of excavations, interrupted by one season of laboratory study, numerous artifacts, features, and structures have been exposed that tell the story of this ancient site that sits at the crossroads between coastal and interior sites in the ancient land of Israel.

As of 2019, the excavations at Tel Shimron have established that people have lived here since at least the Early Bronze Age, approximately 5,000 years ago. Tucker describes the purpose of the excavations at Tel Shimron, the methods used, the results after three years of excavations, and the manner in which these results can be used to understand better the interactions among ancient populations in the region.

Catholic churches begin holding limited in-person services Step comes as restrictions begin to loosen for all places of worship

Parishioners of St. Mark Catholic Church in Highlands Ranch lined up for Mass the weekend of May 16 for the first time in months.

They wore masks, stood significantly spaced apart and prepared for an unusual service amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The church hosted four services over the weekend, each limited to 80 people, all of whom were required to register beforehand.

As they arrived, they were taken through propped-open doors to their assigned sections of the church, preplanned to allow for substantial spacing between family units and groups of 10.

“We’re happy to be back,” some churchgoers said as they entered the building.

However, the return to in-person worship did not come off without a hitch. The weekend services were temporarily canceled the Friday before they were set to take place after Tri-County Health Department was alerted that the services would allow 80 people, while the public health order only allowed for gatherings of

“From what we are seeing, these places of worship are focused on having a thorough plan to protect folks.”

On Sunday, May 17, a church staff member said they’ve received some hostile backlash from the community as a result of reopening.

The Douglas County commissioners, in coordination with Tri-County, submitted a variance request May 18 to the state asking to be allowed to reopen gyms, places of worship and restaurants under specific guidelines.

A response was expected within a week of submission. Governor Jared Polis was also expected to soon release a new set of procedures for the state’s places of worship.

The variance requests that county churches be allowed to open with 50% capacity, Sager said. The health department is also hoping to allow attendees to remove face masks once sitting inside the building and away from other people, she said.

“We’re looking at these flexibilities so folks know we are exercising balance as well. We don’t want to be overburdensome,” Sager said. “If it’s impractical, people may not want to do it at all.”

St. Mark and other Catholic parishes in Douglas County are part of the Diocese of Colorado Springs, which announced May 13 that restricted Masses would be allowed. The Archdiocese of Denver made the same

“This was a decision that has taken a lot of deliberation and study,” said Veronica Ambuul, a spokeswoman for the Diocese of Colorado Springs.

“It definitely was something that the bishop takes very seriously after consulting with a number of different people.”

The decision was made in part after a national Catholic organization released a detailed guideline about how parishes could safely reopen, Ambuul said. The procedures include things like emptying all shared holy water dispensers, restricting the numbers of people inside the buildings, removing reusable worship books, disallowing any physical contact between parishioners and not giving out wine as part of the sacrament of Communion. The Eucharist, or bread, was still distributed for those interested. The parishes also discourage any congregating before or after the service.

“Bishop Sheridan has left it up to pastors to determine if they can offer Masses and still comply with their local health department,” Ambuul said.

Project by local artist features pandemic self-portraits Adrienne DeLoe hopes to turn project into an exhibit and book STAFF REPORT

A local artist has posted the 100th selfportrait relating to the pandemic in her project, “Pandemic Self-Portraits: SelfPortraits and Stories from the Pandemic.”

Adrienne DeLoe, of Wheat Ridge, launched her project on Instragram and Facebook, and within two weeks she was up to 100 portraits, according to a news release. Two days after her first post, she said submissions from all over the world.

“It became obvious very quickly that people wanted to share their images and stories of their experiences in quarantine and throughout the pandemic,” DeLoe said. “I started this project because I was feeling a need to make something positive surrounding the pandemic. It started with wanting to make a self-portrait of my own to express my feelings about what I am going through.

I quickly had the idea that others might want to share their images and stories as well. We are all so isolated right now, so I wanted to create a space where people

The quality of the stories and images has been impressive, DeLoe said in the release, and she said she will keep the project going for as long as people send their work. She wants to turn the selfportraits into a physical art exhibition, and possibly publish a book surrounding the project.

organs, making it difficult to breathe, lowering blood pressure and spiking the heart rate.

“So they’re not just fighting COVID, they’re fighting all these other health issues that can become lifelong,” she said. “I saw it firsthand in New Jersey. It’s not just COVID. It’s everything else.

Kidneys start failing, your heart has issues. COVID literally attacks every part of your body and many of those effects last for the rest of your life.”

The deaths she witnessed were also hard because the patients were alone. The family couldn’t be there in person, just via video chats.

“The families can’t see what’s happening, so they’re pleading with you to do something,” she said. “They can’t see everything you are doing. It’s a disconnect. It’s a disconnect from the families, for the providers, the patients. Everyone feels it. We’re not sure what to do.”

Time off Now back home with her family, she’s taking some vacation time off. Her husband, she said, is very happy to have a second parent back home.

She’ll return to her Westminster ER in June.

Colorado has been enormously lucky, keeping the spread of COVID-19 down through social distancing, she said.

“I feel like Colorado, we’ve been very fortunate” she said. “I’ve been looking at the numbers in comparison between Colorado and New Jersey. They got hit so hard and so fast. What the other nurses were telling me is that one day it was normal, the next day they had the first COVID positive. And by the third day, they were overrun.”

There was no way to ease into it, she said. That’s why it matters that Colorado has done a good job of flattening the curve, and slowed down the disease’s spread.

“I do think Colorado is doing a good job slowly reopening, rather than just being like, ‘We’re open! Come play!” she said.

“I just hope we never have to see what New Jersey saw, in our lifetimes,” she said. “I hope no one ever has to see that, again.”

VOICES How to be perfect in a pandemic

woke up this morning, before my alarm, to the loud clanking sound of construction equipment. Now, I don’t live on a busy street. In fact, I GUEST live in the back end COLUMN of a usually quiet townhome complex with very little traffic, few people, and surrounded by grass and a pond. On a usual day, I wake up to the sound of the wind, birds, or squirrels in the trees outside my Linda Newell window. Usually, I love my perfect suburban life. (Yes, I know how privileged I am.) But waking up startled like that today

ery early on as we became reliant on computers and technology, software engineers and people in the information technology world quickly recognized that the value of the data being fed into the system was only as good WINNING as the source of WORDS the data. safe in their homes, wear masks, and physically distance, the more I realized how I just wanted everyone to be perfect little models of people in a pandemic. But it hasn’t only been others. I’ve done a number on myself, too, ensuring I was doing my part by not hugging my daughters, being obsessed with not touching my face, or getting the perfect lighting for my next Zoom call so I wouldn’t show my new gray hairs.

And now, I’m about to graduate from seminary ON ZOOM! How am I going to make that perfect? Well, I’ve certainly tried. True to form, I’ve overly volunteered to help — organizing an online study break dance party, leading a class healing circle, coordinating a student ritual, and recording backup sing-

During this pandemic, I’ve seen it’s actually far from perfect. I have to stay at home more than I want to, wash my hands for at least 20 seconds every time I touch anything that anyone else has touched, and continually wipe the cupboard knobs and counters with disinfectant. Outside my house, I can’t hang out with my neighbors or go to a movie or church. For weeks, I couldn’t even get an X-ray to see if my broken leg was healing properly.

This whole pandemic thing has really put a wrench in my privileged perfect life. Well, at least the illusion of it. The more I’ve needed it to be perfect, the less it is. The more I wanted people just to stay

Our goal is to prevent GIGO, avoid letting the garbage into our minds and into our hearts that can tear us down mentally and emotionally. And equally as important is that we do not become the ones putting any garbage out there ourselves. The source of our data and what we feed into our system and share with others should be filtered through the lens of the good, the clean, the pure, the powerful, and the positive. Zig Ziglar talked about this long before the idea of fake news and social media ever existed.

As a matter of fact, Zig Ziglar said it this way, “If you dump garbage in, garbage will come out.

The person who dumps garbage into your mind will do considerably more damage than the one who dumps garbage on your floor.”

Channel-surfing once was an exercise in mobility

Something else is different now.

Commercials in the 1950s and 1960s were one minute in length and devoted to one product. That increased to 90 seconds and more than one.

Commercial interruptions now last up to five minutes — or longer — and may feature as many as a dozen products.

The very first remote control, called “Lazy Bones,” was introduced by Zenith in 1950. It was connected to a television by a wire.

Polley’s wireless invention, called the “Flash-Matic,” had limited capabilities: receiver on or off, channel up or down, and volume up or down.

There’s more to this than just the development of a handheld device.

The remote control has changed how we do a lot of things.

We are a very impatient, spoiled population, and that handheld device is partly responsible.

Does anyone watch a film the way it was meant to be watched? Nonstop without breaks for phone calls, snacks, walking the dog, or making out?

It’s unlikely.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Leadership Retreat is ‘far from defunct’ An article in the May 7 Independent contained a small error that we would like to correct.

“Future murky for Littleton immigrant center” accurately stated that the Littleton Immigrant Resources Center at Bemis Library was founded as an outgrowth of the Littleton Leadership Retreat, but then described the Retreat as “a now-defunct city brainstorming group.”

The Retreat, which dates back to 1975, is far from defunct. It sponsored the Littleton Leadership Academy from 2016 to 2018, and since has been planning for future community projects and events.

Like everything else, planning has slowed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Littleton needs creativity, compassion Faced with a possible 25% reduction in revenue, the Littleton City Council and staff need to take an extremely careful look at what programs are cut, and to what extent.

Some small programs can make huge differences in people’s lives.

Don’t “pull the plug” on the Littleton Immigrant Resources Center which was housed at the Littleton Bemis Library. Figure out a way to keep the program functioning, so immigrants can receive the help they need as they try to navigate the complex process of becoming citizens.

The council and staff need to be creative and compassionate. Don’t toss a program because you personally don’t need it. Other people do who are not as fortunate as you.

Littleton has long had a value of caring and community — let’s remember this as we go forward meeting the economic challenges COVID-19 has brought us. Remember, we are all immigrants!

I should know better. I was a film history minor in college. But I am guilty of watching 10 or 15 minutes of a film, pausing it, and looking around to see what else is on.

It’s unconscionable. Forgive me, D.W. Griffith.

I know it’s hard to imagine, but in the 1950s viewers would sit in front of a television for an hour and a half, not budge, and watch the entirety of a film or three television programs.

Popular programs would be sequenced accordingly, so an audience watching a situation comedy on NBC wouldn’t touch the dial and would continue watching NBC until the local nightly news came on.

Of course, most of us were limited to a handful of channels.

Now? I have a hundred. Ironically, much of the time I only watch a handful.

Has our reliance on a remote control contributed to an overall short attention span?

Such as the ability to attend a baseball game and simply watch what is happening on the field without texting, phoning or taking the requisite selfies?

Many of us communicate in spurts and with what? Handheld devices.

I receive three or four handwritten letters a year now. All from the same reader. She lives in Franktown without — if you can believe it — a computer.

Don’t ask me how a remote control works. It says somewhere that they are “infrared gizmos that send digitally coded pulses of radiation.”

When Harry was teething, he teethed the remote control.

It was 1955 again until I replaced it.

I survived.

Creative souls face challenges amid pandemic

aybe they’re waiters and waitresses. Maybe they drive for Lyft. Maybe they teach their own art classes.

Whatever an artist’s gig is, it likely was turned upside down by the coronavirus pandemic’s arrival in Colorado.

“It’s hard enough being an artist in general,” said Collin Parson, director of galleries and the curator at the Arvada Center, a nonprofit arts hub. He’s seen festivals and classes get canceled that often serve as a financial lifeline for people like one of his colleagues, a ceramics instructor at the center.

“A lot of artists piece together to make a life,” said Parson, a 37-year-old Lakewood resident who also works as a professional artist. He added: The fallout from COVID-19 has affected artists’ livelihoods “as artists and as people.”

In mid-March, Colorado ordered bars and restaurants to stop dine-in service for 30 days. Theaters — including movie and performance venues and concert halls — also were among the businesses required to shutter.

The state soon extended that shutdown, and it was still unclear as of mid-May when theaters could open back up. Bans on gatherings have made event cancellations of all kinds commonplace.

Theater gets help Amid the economic spiral, relief funds and other assistance for artists have come forward to ease the blow.

In the case of Miners Alley Playhouse in downtown Golden, the city government and local organizations stepped up to support the theater, whose landlord provided a month of free rent, said Len Matheo, executive and artistic director at Miners Alley Playhouse.

The “small, mighty theater” prides itself on connecting people through the art of live shows, Matheo said.

“People come together to have a theater experience, whether that makes them laugh, cry (or) think.”

Since Miners Alley shut its doors, its normal income streams dried up.

Roughly $20,000 in donations since then have helped keep it afloat — its yearly budget is about $730,000 — and it also snagged a federal Paycheck Protection Program loan to help pay its handful of staff for two months.

But the roughly 100 actors, designers and other artists Miners Alley hires as contract workers in a typical year are having to navigate a more treacherous economic path.

Artist Koko Bayer has placed the hearts throughout the Denver metro area — including a 12-foot-by-12-foot version of it on the Arvada Center building, according to Collin Parson, the center’s director of galleries and curator. “It’s things like those that give me hope and energy to keep getting art out there,” Parson said.

Unemployment, relief funds, other resources

“These actors are out of work. A lot of theater actors, their other job is in the restaurant business because of the flexibility of the hours,” Matheo said. Contract workers have had challenges accessing unemployment benefits because of conflicts caused by their other sources of income, Matheo added.

Pandemic unemployment assistance has worked out for Emily Tuckman, an artistic director and actor with the Boulder-based Misfits Theater Company.

“Right now, I have very little work,” said Tuckman, who lives in Boulder and whose company performs in Boulder and Denver. “Ordinarily, I tutor

SAT and ACT prep, neither of which is happening right now. Additionally, I’m a teaching artist,” but schools are closed.

The federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act provided pandemic unemployment assistance to those not ordinarily eligible for unemployment benefits, including gig workers— such as Lyft drivers — and the self-employed and contract workers, among others whose work was interrupted by COVID-19 in other ways. Tuckman is a self-employed artist.

Identity comes into question Even with the welcome financial assistance, Tuckman, whose “entire identity stems from being able to act, produce and teach,” has struggled with the identity of being a stay-athome mom, she said. Others are grappling with “the loneliness of solitude, and the unknown,” Tuckman said.

“It is so hard not to know when we will be safe and when society and the arts will come back,” Tuckman said.

“I’ve gotten this message both from friends, and from fellow Misfits. We are all ready to get back out there and work emotionally and physically, but there’s this huge wall in the form of a pandemic, and we all want to keep one another, and ourselves, safe.”

Still, Parson, the Arvada Center curator, wants to project a message of hope. He pointed to the center’s call for submissions that any artist in Colorado can enter for free. It aims to portray artists’ thoughts on the pandemic and how they are responding to it, Parson said. It’s called “Viral Influence,” and submissions will be considered for inclusion in a physical exhibition at the center in 2021.

Crisis spurs change Some people who are artists but haven’t had time for art in the bustle of everyday life may be able to work on art amid society’s halt, Parson said.

Parson has seen unfamiliar names responding to the call for submissions — an exciting development for him. Some artists have “exploded with creativity” from reading the news, learning about the virus and simply being outdoors.

“I know a couple artists I’ve talked to who think this’ll be a cultural renaissance, like (with) World War I or World War II,” Parson added.

Tuckman also believes current challenges could strengthen the arts.

“I just think the Denver community is such a special community,” Tuckman said. “I really, truly, believe that we will get through this, and we will be stronger as an artistic community because of it.”

Decorative rocks spread joy to neighbors Parker residents connect through painted messages

The Parker “Rocks” Facebook group began in 2017 with the purpose to connect the community and spread joy in small doses to their neighbors.

“The group was created simply to spread the love and so people could post rocks they hide/find,” said Jennifer DeJesus, one of two admins of the page. “The kids and adults love to do this. And it brings smiles to the faces of those that hide the rocks and those that find them. Just spreading love and kindness when there’s so much hate in this world.”

The long stay-at-home stretch has given new life to the movement. Kids — and adults — from the South Pinery to Bradbury Hills and Cottonwood neighborhoods are leaving their own decorative rocks along local trails.

The rocks vary in size. Some say “Stay Smilin,’” “You Are Beautiful” and other positive messages. Others have more artful designs and a few camofluage like a flower, hidden in plain sight at first glance.

“When I’m running alone and find a rock I get so excited, even as a grown woman,” Dougherty said. “Recently, I was having a pretty rough day at home with the kiddos, took myself out for a solo run and found at least three painted rocks. They brought me so much joy and completely turned my day around. It’s amazing what these small tokens of kindness can do.”

The idea is to let the rocks “hitchhike” with walkers who need company and to leave them behind for the next person. Those who leave behind their rocks include a location on the community’s Facebook page, Parker

One woman walking by May 16 said she let a rock tag along with her to Korea and other parts of the United States because she wanted to spread the good will as far as she could.

Elizabeth Higgins posted on March 31, saying they began a scavenger hunt with different painted rocks for their kids to pass the time during stayat-home orders.

“My kiddo has loved going on a new hunt every day and it helps her feel like she is playing with her friends on some level,” she wrote.

Englewood waiting to reopen public facilities Pirates Cove, rec centers, library still can’t welcome in-person visitors

Like almost everywhere else now, life is different at the Englewood Public Library.

As a result of COVID-19 precautions, rather than being able to go inside and explore the library’s books and DVDs, residents can schedule curbside pickup times through the internet or by telephone to utilize the library’s collection.

Live story time, where Englewood librarians would read books to children, has moved to Facebook Live and has been well attended, according to Mark Mullis, Englewood’s new library and cultural arts manager.

The city has been utilizing Zoom for its Teen Hangouts, a service the library launched before the pandemic, in which teenagers gathered weekly for board games, crafts and more. The teenagers have gotten creative and launched EPL Teen Quaranzine, an online blog that features stories from participants in Teen Hangouts.

For the time being, Englewood’s library is going to continue to offer curbside and remote services as city officials ponder when to open the library to the public again. There is not a set reopening date for the library, according to Christina Underhill, director of parks, recreation and library.

“It’s a challenge because of the amount of cleaning. In libraries, there are a lot of different touch points,” said Underhill. “The biggest concern is trying to keep facilities clean and safe.”

The library’s next venture will be to work to connect people to information and resources such as government programs, public assistance and more.

The library is also working to offer to-go crafts to create projects with library staff.

“We think it’s important to maintain a continuity of service. We think that is important to the emotional and psy-

We want to do everything we can to maintain a sense of normalcy — but also connect people to resources they need.”

The city’s Malley Senior Recreation Center and main Englewood Recreation Center have also moved their services to virtual platforms, as rec centers are still closed under Colorado’s safer-at-home order.

Englewood has been offering virtual recreation classes such as yoga, belly dancing and Zumba to residents.

“While we miss the face-to-face connection, at least we’re getting people active and doing something other than just sitting at home. The virtual side has been beneficial to help people get through this,” said Underhill. “We’re being patient, and we wish we could reopen our doors right away.”

The Malley center is also still carrying out its Volunteers of America lunch program to residents by offering curbside pickup.

“We know (seniors are) the most vulnerable population. We’re not rushing to reopen — we’re just trying to be creative to still offer programs,” said Underhill.

Pirates Cove ‘tentative’ Pirates Cove Water Park in Englewood is a popular destination for residents throughout the Denver metro area where families can swim, relax and have fun at the water park’s attractions.

Normally the water park opens on May 23, but as of May 14, Englewood is

targeting a June 7 reopening date. “(June 7 is) extremely tentative,” said Underhill.

Public pools in Colorado remain closed under the state’s safer-at-home order.

Brad Anderson, senior facility supervisor for aquatic programs for Englewood, said the city started hiring employees for Pirates Cove back in January.

If it can open again, Pirates Cove will enforce COVID-19 guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Tri-County Health Department, which covers Arapahoe, Douglas and Adams counties.

“We’re monitoring the ever-changing environment, and we’ll make sure the guests and staff are safe in all of our facilities,” said Anderson.

Great American Beer Festival to move online For first time, Denver suds celebration won’t happen in-person

Pour one out for the Great American Beer Festival. The annual competition held in Denver won’t happen at the Colorado Convention Center Sept.

24-26 as planned and will instead go online only on Oct. 16-17.

The Convention Center has turned into an overflow hospital, albeit an empty one for now, making it unavailable to host big events.

“While we are disappointed to not be gathering in Denver this fall for the craft beer community’s annual big tent event, the health and safety of our attendees, brewers, volunteers, judges, and employees is and always

has been our top priority,” said Bob Pease, president and CEO of the Boulder-based Brewers Association, in a statement.

“As the world is still greatly affected by the spread of COVID-19 and will continue to be affected for the foreseeable future, we must stay true to our priorities and pursue other ways to host GABF.” GABF organizers say the online event is still being planned but will likely include “beer tastings, conversations with brewers, local brewery activations, and at-home beer and food pairing deliveries.”

The competition aspect of the festival will continue, with more than 100 judges sorting through some 7,000 expected entries to award the famed GABF gold, silver and bronze medals.

Jeremy Bitner run and walk still on Event organizers are moving the run and walk online

So, they have moved the event to a virtual platform.

Residents who want to participate in the virtual Jeremy Bitner Memorial 5K/10K Run and 5K Walk can sign up for the event at bitnermemorialfund. org. After participants are done running or walking, they can post their

results to the Jeremy Bitner Fallen Officer Fund Facebook page. Residents can complete the run or walk between June 1 and June 30.

The run and walk benefits the Jeremy Bitner Fallen Officer Fund, which raises money to assist families affected by the loss of an officer in the

line-of-duty. It originally started after Bitner’s death as a way to raise money for his family.

“It was based on tragedy, but the event itself continues to somewhat have a sense of tragedy because of what it is intended to do,” said Nick Fogel, an attorney for Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh and Jardine, P.C. Fogel is a member of the Jeremy Bitner Fallen Officer Fund Board of Directors.

Residents who participate in the event will start and finish the run and walk at Cornerstone Park at 5150 S. Windermere St. The route runs through the streets of the area and after the event ends on June 30, participants will receive a T-shirt.

Since 2013, the Jeremy Bitner Fallen Officer Fund has raised money for families of fallen officers from the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, Littleton Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office and more.

Residents can sign up for the run and walk throughout June.

“This cause is very important to the (Jeremy Bitner Fallen Officer Fund Board of Directors), the Bitner Family and the Englewood Police Department. From the steps of the Capitol earlier this week, GOP leaders in the House suggested the cuts would right-size state government, but pledged to challenge education cuts and protect the senior homestead property tax exemption.

“There is room to prioritize and make the cuts we need … but we don’t want to do it on the backs of our children and our seniors,” said Rep. Dave Williams, R-Colorado Springs. “It would be unfair — it would be heartless — to pull the rug right from out underneath them.”

Democratic leaders blamed the Trump administration and Republican-controlled U.S. Senate for the need to make the cuts after inaction blocked a federal relief crafted by the U.S. House.

Colorado House Speaker KC Becker, D-Boulder, and Democratic budget writers have urged Congress to approve more federal aid for states, say-

ing a bailout is the only way to keep Colorado government operating at a reasonable level. It’s “a truly dire situation,” she wrote in a recent opinion column.

At the same time, liberal-leaning advocacy groups are expected to re-up their demand for an emergency tax hike to prevent budget devastation.

But Democrats are skeptical of the move and Republicans — whose votes are needed for passage — oppose the idea.

Englewood Police Sgt. Chad Read remembers former Englewood Police Detective Jeremy Bitner as a man who wanted to do good for the community when he joined the department in 2004.

Bitner’s time with the department tragically ended on May 28, 2012 when he was struck by a vehicle and killed at the age of 39 by Conner Donohue, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2013 for vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, leaving the scene of an accident and driving drunk. “(Bitner) had a large impact on this organization. He was just a real joy to be around and was always upbeat and in a good mood when he came into work,” said Read.

While Bitner’s death was tragic, his name is still honored eight years later through the annual Jeremy Bitner Memorial 5K/10K Run and 5K Walk.

And even though the COVID-19 crisis won’t allow for the event to carry on in person as it was scheduled for on June 20, event organizers still want to host the run and walk.

Amid all the slashing, a handful of prominent state initiatives managed to survive the budget bloodbath. One option to divert about $8 million earmarked for affordable housing failed, with Democrats voting to protect the program created in legislation a year ago and the two Republicans on the committee voting to cut it.

Wrestling club grapples with virus restrictions Golden Eagles go online for training sessions during pandemic

Aiden Cartwright would rather be wrestling with a teammate at practice, but since all wrestling has been shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he’s turned toward other options.

Cartwright is a member of the Highlands Ranch-based Golden Eagles Wrestling Club. Head coach Scott McDoniel offers virtual training sessions for all the club members, and Cartwright is a participant.

“It’s been going great,” said Cartwright, who will be a junior at Mountain Vista. “It’s easy and I don’t have to go to practice. I like it a lot. And it’s good to stay in condition. It’s not the same but it’s better than nothing.

“Coach tries to have an aspect of competition. It’s there but it is not the same. It’s not like actually wrestling somebody. That’s what I miss the most, live drills. I miss wrestling with people.”

McDoniel knew any wrestling competition would be on hold to at least July 1, so he tweaked his classes with virtual sessions.

The Golden Eagles Wrestling Club was founded in 2014 to offer youth wrestling in Highlands Ranch for athletes between the ages of 5 years old through high school age. It is a feeder program for wrestlers who attend or will enroll at Mountain Vista, Highlands Ranch, ThunderRidge, Rock Canyon and Elizabeth high schools “It’s not going to replace actual sparring practices where you are drilling and wrestling with a teammate,” explained McDoniel. “I do believe from a technique perspective it’s not bad that we can take a step backwards and work on some basic fundamentals that

a lot of time kids take for granted.

“It was actually not that difficult to set up. We started using Zoom from the standpoint I could see a lot of people at one time. I just send out a link to our club members and they just join in and they just come online and I see them from there.”

McDoniel runs six different classes that focus on certain days of the week.

For instance, the classes are labeled as Mindset Monday, Technique Tuesday and Thursday and Workout Wednesday.

“You never know what is going to happen, and obviously with wrestling being a combative sport on the low

end of the totem pole of social distancing guidelines, there’s not much we can do with training right now,” said McDoniel. “We do a lot of what we call shadow drilling and using some visualization techniques and imagining your opponent in front of you as you are working specific techniques.

“The fundamental classes with the younger kids, we had as many as 20 come out at one time. With the advanced group we have 10 to 12.

From a visualization perspective there have been a couple benefits and we’ve seen kids actually getting better. The younger kids don’t have the distraction of the wrestling room where you have a lot of kids.”

Lance Alexander says he and his 12-year-old twin brother Emmett, who attend Coyote Creek Elementary School, know a lot more about wrestling thanks to McDoniel’s instructions.

“I am actually learning a lot,” said Lance Alexander. “Our coach supplies us with equipment and we also have my own mat. Our coach likes to mix it up but keep us on schedule. It’s been great. My brother enjoys it too and we’re family so it gives me a wrestling partner.”

Easton Parker, an 8-year-old club member, has enjoyed his class experience.

“It’s going good,” said Parker. “It’s really fun on the mat. I work hard. I’ve learned a lot about techniques.”

Another message from Pesch’s account, sent on May 13, said, “Watch out (expletive). It’s coming. You have destroyed lives. Payback’s going to be (an expletive).”

Warrant issued Aurora Police obtained a warrant for Pesch’s arrest on May 15.

Aurora officers again spotted Pesch outside the Tri-County Health building at about 8:15 p.m. on May 18, according to a department spokesperson. Pesch allegedly fled on foot when officers approached him but he was apprehended after a short chase.

Pesch was arrested on the outstanding warrant and on suspicion of failure to obey a lawful order and resisting arrest.

A search of Pesch’s criminal record showed Pesch is accused of breaking windows or destroying property in at least seven other incidents in 2019, including at Denver’s Auraria Campus, an East Colfax bank, and an Aurora church.

Pesch confessed to several of the incidents, according to the affidavit.

Most of the cases are ongoing, according to court records.

Pesch previously made headlines in Elbert County in December 2017, when the Elbert County Sheriff ’s Office announced Pesch had been charged with murder in the 2010 death of Kiowa High School teacher Randy Wilson.

Pesch had repeatedly confessed to murdering Wilson in a series of Facebook messages and in-person interviews with Elbert County investigators, as well as in cryptic text messages to Greenwood Village police, rambling handwritten notes left at Southwest Plaza shopping mall, and handwritten messages scrawled on the walls

of his Littleton-area apartment, according to Colorado Community Media reports at the time. Pesch’s behavior prompted his partner to leave the state with their two young daughters.

But once in custody in Elbert County, Pesch recanted his confession to murder, according to CCM reports. Further, his confession did not match physical evidence in the case, Pesch’s DNA was nowhere to be found on the evidence, and Pesch’s adoptive father provided an alibi for the night Wilson died.

During the case, a CCM investigation revealed that Pesch had a long history of falsely confessing to crimes, including a series of cabin burglaries in Chaffee County in 2010 and an apparent reference to a then-unsolved 2009 murder of a Saguache County man, a slaying for which another man has since been convicted.

Pesch’s public defender in the Elbert County case argued that his confession and strange behavior were motivated by mental illness and drug abuse.

Prosecutors dropped the murder charge against Pesch in the Wilson case in February 2019, more than a year after he was arrested. Pesch pleaded guilty to felony attempted escape, a charge incurred when he broke away from arresting officers outside the Elbert County Jail in 2017.

As part of his probation imposed in Elbert County District Court, Pesch was required to complete a full psychiatric evaluation and comply with any recommended treatment, complete a substance abuse treatment program, attend cognitive behavioral therapy, submit to random drug tests and maintain employment of at least 40 hours a week.

Pesch’s last listed address was The Recovery Center, a sober-living facility in Denver run by the Mental Health Center of Denver.

The family’s four biological kids — all who are in their teens or preteen years — have to “share their mom and dad, and that’s hard in a big family,” Chastity Gomez said.

She and her husband take care to spend time with them, and friends in the community play a role in supporting their kids.

The kids’ “empathy has increased for people’s stories and where they come from,” Chastity Gomez said.

“I’ve seen that (grow) in them over the past five years.”

When a foster child moves on from the Gomez house, “there’s always tears,” and the family takes a month or two without fostering to grieve.

“It’s our (whole family) that fosters, not just me and Mark,” Chastity Gomez said.

As part of National Foster Care Month, the Colorado Department of Human Services is recognizing “five exceptional foster families for their commitment to helping families and kids,” a recent news release said.

The Gomezes are one of those being honored. They have “created lasting relationships” with many

of the kids they have cared for, the release added.

“Mark and Chastity are also mentors in the local foster care community, participating in foster care panels, information nights and foster parent training,” the release said.

Having a “huge community around us” that provides emotional support, meals, transportation and babysitting is part of what enables the Gomezes to foster, Chastity Gomez said.

“Even though you yourself might never want to foster, you can support a foster family,” she added.

“None of us can do this by ourselves.”
