Fear, loss of funds challenge Littleton immigrant center Would-be citizens staying away for fear of deportation, director says

Fear of interacting with federal immigration officials is scaring off immigrants eligible for citizenship from becoming Americans, leaders at the Littleton Immigrant Resource Center told U.S. Rep. Jason Crow on April 15.

Almost 900 immigrants have become American citizens since 2005 thanks to help from the Littleton Immigrant Resource Center, which provides services like citizenship test classes, English classes and citizenship application preparation assistance, said Glaucia Rabello, the center’s director.

But immigrants are increasingly holding off on pursuing full citizenship amid a climate of fear driven by national politics, Rabello told Crow during a visit to the center by the congressman, who represents Colorado’s 6th Congressional District.

“They see all kinds of bad news, and they’re afraid,” Rabello said. “Every day they’re seeing images in the news of people being detained or deported.

Many have told us they’re going to wait for the next presidential administration. We tell them: If you’re a legal permanent resident, you have nothing to fear. You can’t be deported because the government doesn’t like you.”

The LIRC will likely help around

150 legal permanent residents pursue full citizenship this year, Rabello said, down from a peak of around 200 in 2016, including what she called a particularly strong spike after that November’s presidential election was won by Donald Trump.

The LIRC’s would-be clients aren’t alone in their fear, said Deborah Cannon, the Colorado spokesperson for United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

“Yes, there’s an increased fear in the immigrant community, but there doesn’t need to be,” Cannon said. “(Citizenship classes) are a safe place.”

Crow called the climate of fear concerning.

“There are a lot of threats to our immigrants and refugees, and this administration is doubling down on its more extreme policies,” Crow said, citing controversy over immigrants claiming asylum on the Mexican border. “These are policies that aren’t consistent with the values of our community … the strength and vibrancy of our community comes from our diversity.”

Crow’s visit comes at a challenging time for the LIRC, which was denied a recurring grant last year, leaving the City of Littleton to backfill its funding.

The LIRC was founded in 2005, and initially connected immigrants with community resources in a limited manner, but in 2012 it received a $250,000 biennial grant from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to greatly expand its offerings.

The center won renewals of the grant in 2014 and 2016, providing for a host of English-language classes, citizenship test prep courses, and payroll for teachers and staff.

But USCIS declined to renew the grant in 2018, saying that while the LIRC scored high marks in most criteria, it fell short of student attendance goals for follow-up tests after citizenship classes.

“Applicant identified the main barriers to student attendance being work schedules, transportation challenges, and child care, but failed to adequately address solutions to them,” according to a letter from USCIS explaining the grant denial.

The letter says USCIS received 80 grant applications in 2018. The agency’s website says they awarded grants to 40 immigrant assistance groups last year.

Rabello said the declining demand for citizenship services amid the culture of fear makes boosting post-test numbers difficult, and added that inadequate test attendance is a stubborn problem given the realities of many immigrants’ lives.

“Many of our clients have three jobs,” Rabello said. “They don’t have cars. They have kids. People have other priorities, and getting them to come in for a post-test after they’ve completed citizenship classes can be difficult.”

Rabello said the center is working on boosting post-test attendance, possibly by imitating other groups that offer gift cards for test completion.

In previous years, the $250,000 grant

was spread over two years at a time, with the City of Littleton matching the grant with $125,000 a year in general fund money.

With the loss of the grant, however, the city is covering the whole cost of the center, but Littleton Mayor Debbie Brinkman said she’s not sure how long the city can keep paying.

“It’s a substantial amount of money and it’s not a primary service,” Brinkman said. “It’s not public safety or infrastructure. Those are our priorities, and they’re underfunded already.”

Still, Brinkman said she believes the center does important work.

“We have people who want to become American citizens,” Brinkman said. “They want to learn English.

They want to understand how to live and work in America. Public libraries support those goals. Who else is going to do it?”

The LIRC is busily pursuing a wider range of funding through other foundations and grants, with the goal of reducing dependence on city and federal dollars, said Tim Nimz, Bemis Library’s director.

“That’s the direction we got from city council,” Nimz said. “We want the city to draw back. That’s our task this year.”

Rabello said she is hopeful other funding will emerge, and she plans to apply for the federal grant again this summer.

In the meantime, Rabello said she would like to see more would-be Americans come through the door.

“We have to stop feeding the fear,” Rabello said. “It’s not helping.”

Littleton Business Chamber ready to flex political muscle

Not even two years since its founding, the Littleton Business Chamber is becoming a powerhouse in local commerce and politics, the group’s leaders say.

The LBC “collaboratively fights for the best interests of local businesses,” said co-president Pat Dunahay, who also runs PDA Road Gear, a car

audio business.

Now, with four seats on Littleton’s City Council up for grabs this fall, the group is eager to flex its muscle and open its purse for candidates it deems worthy, Dunahay said.

“Getting the right city council is so important,” Dunahay said.

Founded in September 2017, the LBC boasts a membership of nearly 120 individual and business members.

reads like a Who’s Who of Littleton: Mayor Debbie Brinkman, councilmember Pat Driscoll, former mayorBruce Beckman, local community fixtures Frank Atwood and Carol Brzeczek, and a slew of business owners, according to the group’s website.

The business membership roster includes outfits large and small, including Lockheed Martin, McKinner’s Pizza and the Littleton Independent.

tics since its founding, with members giving triple-digit campaign donations to Driscoll and councilmembers Karina Elrod and Kyle Schlachter in 2017.

‘Not a single one of us walked out the same’ Survivors and loved ones gather to remember 13 killed in 1999 at Columbine

wenty years.

Twenty years since the day hell opened beneath Columbine High School. Since students streamed out of the south Jefferson County school, their hands over their heads, fleeing two classmates turned murderers.

Twenty years since families learned their loved ones had been taken. Since the community suffered a wound that may never completely heal.

On April 20, 20 years since the darkest day many will ever know, hundreds gathered in Clement Park, just around the corner from the school, to remember, and to share the pain and love that followed that day in 1999.

“Not all scars are visible on the skin,” Sean Graves, who was shot in the attack’s first moments, told the crowd. “On that day, there were 2,000 people inside… Not a single one of us walked out the same.”

But the mood in the park was not despair or misery, but hope and appreciation that after two decades, life has moved forward.

“We can overcome evil,” Graves said. “We can love one another. We can become family.”

Drawing from the strength of loved ones was crucial in the months and years following the attack, said Patrick Ireland, who to many was once known as “the boy in the window.” The world watched live in 1999 as two SWAT officers pulled Ireland, who had been shot multiple times, through a broken window of the school onto the roof of an armored vehicle.

“The amount of loving, healing energy was incredible,” Ireland said of the aftermath.

Throughout the memorial event, babies cooed in strollers, toddlers scribbled in coloring books and kids scampered among the crowd — new, young lives, for whom the tragedy at Columbine is something vague that happened long before their birth.

The pain may never fully subside, said Dawn Anna, whose daughter Lauren Townsend was killed in the attack.

“Sometimes I wonder how I’m going to get through this day,” Anna said. “Sometimes I wonder how I’m going to get through any day. But I think of Lauren, and I hear her say: ‘Do it for me. Do something wonderful for me today.’”

Toward the end of the ceremony, former Columbine Principal Frank DeAngelis read the names of those killed by the attackers. Thirteen names DeAngelis said he recites every morning upon waking. Thir-

Colorado Community Media wins big at annual press convention STAFF REPORT

Colorado Community Media received 50 awards in the annual state press competition, including the prestigious public service award for a year-long series on the state of mental health in Douglas County.

The award-winning entries, announced April 13, were spread among many of the 18 weeklies and two monthlies that CCM publishes in Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas, Elbert and Jefferson counties. They cover work done between Nov. 1, 2017 and Oct. 31, 2018.

“Being recognized by our peers is validation of the quality work of our staff,” Publisher Jerry Healey said.

“I am proud to be associated with the team here, and our readers can expect more good things to come.”

CCM’s papers won awards in all five of the Colorado Press Association’s weekly classifications, which were divided up based on size of circulation.

Class 1, for weeklies with a circulation of up to 1,000, was the smallest, and Class 5, for weeklies with a circulation greater than 7,000, was the largest.

Monthlies are in a separate class.

Among Class 4 weeklies, journalists Alex DeWind, Jessica Gibbs and Nick Puckett took top honors in public service and series for their “Time to Talk” project, which explored all facets of mental health in Douglas County. First-place awards also were given to DeWind and Gibbs for educa-

In the Class 3 weekly category, journalist Ellis Arnold won first place for best series for “No Place to Call Home,” which looked at how Englewood is facing challenges of an increasing homeless population, and first in best health enterprise for a

story on the opioid epidemic.

In Class 2, journalist Christy Steadman received first place for an in-depth look at gender in engineering fields and the top public service award for a story on a troublesome intersection. Steadman, with colleagues Shanna Fortier, Clarke Reader and editor Glenn Wallace also received first place for their ongoing series, “Homeless in Jeffco,” which explored the challenges facing suburban communities.

Also in Class 2, photographer Stefan Brodsky took first for a photo essay

on a Memorial Day celebration in the Northglenn/Thornton Sentinel and Westminster Window. Metro North editor Scott Taylor, Fortier and Brodsky took second in deadline reporting for their coverage of the memorial service for a slain Adams County deputy.

Among Class 1 weeklies, journalist David Gilbert won first place in the series, news story and sustained coverage categories for his exploration of the life and death of a Kiowa man and the complicated legal case of the man arrested on suspicion of his murder.

Fortier received first-place honors for her photography portfolio among Class 5 weeklies.

Kailyn Lamb, editor for the Denver monthlies Washington Park Profile and Life on Capitol Hill, won first place in sports column writing along with second-place honors for environmental and business reporting.

Karen Earhart, Erin Franks, Tina Meltzer and Lisa Allison won first place for Best Classified Pages or Sections, in addition to several other advertising awards.

In all, CCM garnered 23 first-place and 27 second-place awards in categories that also included headline, design and editorial writing; and business, photography, feature, deadline, environmental, agricultural and sports reporting.

The CMR is used for patients who are at risk for heart failure and has a growing impact on diagnosis, clinical management, and decision making. Bailey said the CMR’s ability to characterize the myocardium by using multiple different imaging parameters provides insight into the underlying heart failure and its prognosis. South Denver Cardiology has integrated this technology into diagnosis and management of complicated patients in their outpatient comprehensive heart

failure clinic.

Another test Bailey said South Denver Cardiology is proud to be utilizing is the MitraClip Procedure, also known as a transcatheter mitral valve repair. Bailey explained that a mitraclip is used to treat patients with heart failure that is caused specifically by a leaky heart valve.

Mitraclip is a medical device implanted via a transcatheter technique and involves “pinching” the leaky valve closed using a small clip.

Having a leaky heart valve can cause quality-of-life issues for anyone, including exhaustion and difficulty breathing. Bailey said prior to the mitraclip technology, someone with a leaky heart valve would have to go through open-heart surgery.

“With mitraclip, the entire procedure is guided by an ultra sound while the

patient is asleep,” Bailey said. “There is no open-heart surgery, and the recovery time is substantially less.”

Only performing the mitraclip procedures for a short time, Bailey said his team has performed about 2 dozen with reported results from patients being they are breathing better and have a lot more energy.

In 2019, Bailey said South Denver Cardiology will begin using a Cardiac CT Scan, which is technology that will provide doctors a scan of arteries and identify any blockages. A cardiac CT scan is a painless imaging test that uses x rays to take detailed pictures of the heart and its blood vessels.

“This is a five-minute test,” Bailey said.

“In the past, a patient would have to be admitted and we shoot dye into a catheter that would move through the heart. The Cardiac CT is a painless non-invasive way to get an accurate diagnosis of blockages and measure the percentage of blood flow in all arteries.”

Bailey said some other tests offered at South Denver Cardiology includes the transcatheter aortic-valve replacement, which is similar to what rock star Mick Jagger had done recently.

Girl Scouts give gift of cookies to Littleton Police Little sellers drop off 109 boxes for Littleton’s finest

Littleton Police got a king-size gift from some pint-size benefactors on April 16, when the members of Girl Scout Troop 67484 dropped off 109 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies for Littleton’s finest.

The dozen girls in the “daisy troop,” all around kindergarten age, collected the boxes as part of the Girl Scouts’ “Hometown Heroes” program, which allows cookie buyers to earmark boxes of Tagalongs, Thin Mints and so on for a chosen local group.

“It’s a great way for the girls to get involved in their community, and it was a good way to sell a few more boxes toward the end of the season when buyers were getting ‘cookied out,’ ” said Natalie Harper, a selfdescribed “cookie mom” who helped the girls sell their wares.

For the mini-entrepreneurs, the sales weren’t necessarily the highlight of cookie season.

Zoey, 5, whom Harper called a rock star cookie seller, said her favorite part of the experience was “eating the cookies.”

“I still remember that hug,” Werder told the girls. “It’s things like that, and like you guys today, that made me want to be an officer.”

that saw Littleton Fire Rescue dissolved and folded into South Metro Fire Rescue.

Though no candidates had officially announced runs for city council seats as of an April 18 LBC meeting at Designs by Sundown, Dunahay said the group is excited about potential candidates coming from the Littleton Leadership Academy..

Both Schlachter and Elrod previously attended the academy, a sort of civic affairs boot camp run by former Littleton Mayor Susan Thornton.

“We want educated, right-thinking people to run our city,” Dunahay said.

The City of Littleton is eager to bolster its good relationship with the LBC, said Community Development Director Jennifer Henninger, who spoke at the April 18 meeting.

“Businesses are the backbone of a community,” Henninger said. “They

have the pulse of the city.”

The LBC will likely prove an important partner in the city’s efforts to revamp its comprehensive plan and draft its first-ever Transportation Master Plan this year, Henninger said.

The LBC also makes big donations to local charity groups and worthy causes, said co-president Kal Murib, citing donations totaling more than $30,000 to local groups including the Friends of Littleton K-9 and TLC Meals on Wheels.

The group also recognizes local businesses, awarding Reinke Bros. owner Greg Reinke its “Community Leader of the Year” prize in 2018. This year’s prize went to Designs by Sundown owner Mike Hommel.

Reinke, who is also the president of the Historic Downtown Littleton Merchants Association, said the LBC fills a hole in business representation in Littleton.

“My group represents merchants, but the LBC represents property owners,” Reinke said. “They’re the ones who can make changes that are more effective.”

Meaning, they don’t have the science and data to back doing this type of surgery for this type of pain. That’s why many don’t always feel better after having a knee scope. Therefore, your best route to fixing this issue is to find someone who can properly diagnose and treat with hands-on techniques, exercises you can do, and helping you understand what movements are helpful vs. harmful to get over this type of knee pain. I cannot stress this enough: You need to find someone who understands your type of knee pain, has the time to hear your story and where you want to get back to in your active life, & will guide you back to the pain relief you deserve.

LPS to hold special meeting on Arapahoe accusations Anonymous group alleges mismanagement at high school

The school board will hold a special meeting on May 2 to “hear public comment regarding the leadership, climate, and culture of Arapahoe High School,” according to a Littleton Public Schools news release.

The meeting comes in response to accusations by an anonymous group that the high school has a culture of bullying and drug abuse, and that school and district leadership have mismanaged the response to student suicides and teachers accused of sexual assault.

The meeting, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Arapahoe High School theater, is a chance to “make sure we’re gathering all viewpoints and thoughtfully charting a path forward, instead of potentially reacting in haste,” said Littleton Board of Education member Jim Stephens.

Jessica Peck, an attorney representing the group Arapahoe High School Community Coalition, said she learned about the meeting from the news release, and expressed frustration with the district’s communication with her.

“We’ve done everything we can to foster collaboration and trust, but we have been repeatedly ignored,” Peck said. “The truth will win out and my clients won’t be silenced anymore.”

Peck spoke at an April 11 school board meeting and said the group’s preference was to speak at the regularly scheduled school board meeting on April 25. Peck said she was repeatedly stymied in efforts to get a time slot to present on the group’s behalf at the meeting.

Peck said the group still plans to publicly release the responses to an online survey it conducted on Arapahoe’s culture and climate on April 25, and said the survey drew more than 1,100 responses.

Stephens said May 2 was the earliest date that the whole school board could schedule a special meeting, and felt the format was conducive to giving SEE ARAPAHOE, P11

In 1999, Rebecca Bartee, 41, was murdered at her apartment on South Dayton Street in Centennial. Eighteen years later, a 71-year-old man was charged with her murder but died before a trial date could be set. District Attorney George Brauchler said Bartee’s family was denied justice.

Bartee was a prosecutor for the district attorney’s office and worked there for three weeks before her death.

On April 9 at the Parker Arts, Culture and Events Center, Bartee’s sister, Peggy Brockington, spoke about Bartee and thanked the investigators and journalist responsible for tracking down the alleged killer. The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office unveiled a wall dedicated to Bartee in the department’s training room.

“She had a great quest for justice, and the decision to name the training center after her is an honor to her

In the summer of 2017, Army veteran Tyler Wilson, a paraplegic, traveled to Hawaii with his wife and baby son. Army veteran Josh Hargis, a double leg amputee, went to Ireland the summer of 2018. This October, Michael Jernigan, a retired marine who lost his sight, will go with his wife to Hawaii.

These are three of 32 disabled veterans who have been able to vacation, free of charge, thanks to Vacations for Warriors. Six years ago Bob DeMonbrun founded the nonprofit organization that funds two-week long trips to popular destinations like Hawaii, Yellowstone, the Caribbean and Disney World.

DeMonbrun, a veteran who served in the Vietnam era, sees his nonprofit as a way to honor families who face lifelong challenges. He wasn’t injured in the service but feels for those who were. Recipients of the vacations have debilitating mental and physical disabilities.

“I wanted to help soldiers and their families,” DeMonbrun, of Highlands Ranch, said. “We just want to bring some joy to their lives after years of rehab and injuries and family separation.”

At 6 p.m. May 11, Vacations for Warriors will host its fifth Luau Paniolo — a mix of a Hawaiian luau and cowboy style pig roast — at Elks Lodge 1650, 5749 S Curtice St., Littleton.

Sold at the door, a $35 ticket covers food and nonalcoholic drinks. Two hunting tags for antelope on a 4,000acre ranch between Fort Collins and Laramie, among other items, will be auctioned off. Winners of a raffle for a seven-day Caribbean cruise will be announced.

There will be music and dancing.

Some of the wounded veterans will give speeches.

“You get to meet (people) who are helping,” said Jeff Ludwig, who is on the Vacation for Warriors board of directors. “Bring a tissue.”

Funds raised at Luau Paniolo will help send three veterans, including Jernigan, to a destination of their choice this year. Each trip costs about $10,000, according to DeMonbrun.

This year’s theme was “Honoring the Past and Creating Hope for the Future.” Brauchler and Assistant District Attorney Matt Maillaro emceed the event, thanking all 17 nominees.

The ceremony closed with a tribute to No Notoriety, an organization that advocates for omitting the names of convicted killers in news stories. The organization was founded by Tom and Caren Teves, whose son, Alex, was murdered in 2012 along with 11 others in the Aurora theater shooting.

The program has garnered national attention.

ccording to a study recently released by Fannie Mae, more baby boomer retirees have mortgage debt than those retirees who were born between 1931 and 1935.

While property taxes and homeowners insurance must continue to be paid, the removal of an oftensubstantial mortgage payment allows homeowners to ease the pressure of stretched financial obligations.

With less outgo comes a sigh of relief, as retirees may be able to delay taking social security until age 70, pay off high interest credit card debt, allow time for the retirement portfolio to grow, and find a myriad of other

uses for tax-free proceeds of a reverse mortgage.

Recent changes to the government insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (Reverse Mortgage) program

by HUD have reduced the amount of mortgage insurance paid annually from 1.25% to .5%.

Another group of seniors that are benefiting from a reverse mortgage are those who own their homes free-andclear. The equity, or housing wealth, available to such homeowners is often substantial, and access to a portion of those funds can be life changing!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A view worth protecting The Historic Littleton Inc. (HLI) Board of Directors is writing this letter to alert the newspaper’s readers to a pending proposal for construction of two permanent structures on the site of the historic Carnegie Library at the west end of Main Street in downtown Littleton. Those proposed structures would nearly totally block the view of the historic Carnegie Library, currently home of the Melting Pot restaurant.

For many decades, the City of Littleton has had a conservation easement on the Carnegie Library. That easement grants the city “full and free right to the uninterrupted visual enjoyment” of the Carnegie Library. The two proposed permanent structures to be built directly in front of the main façade of this building would violate the intent of this easement.

The Main Street Historic District has the basic form of a straight street lined by historic commercial buildings that frame a view to the east of the historic Arapahoe County Courthouse and to the west of the historic Carnegie Library with the mountains in the background. That Historic District draws its integrity from this design with the Carnegie Library and the courthouse forming the “bookends” of Main Street.

And never say never is my motto.

The word “motto” is Latin for “to mumble, mutter, murmur,” and that’s what I am doing right now.

Teach yourself to speak the language of success

H

ave you ever had a desire to learn to speak a foreign language? Some, if not many of you are already bilingual or multilingual, if that is you, you have my deepest respect as you can communicate with others in this WINNING world in a way WORDS that many of us simply cannot. Not without Google Translate or some other app.

Learning to speak Spanish, French, German, Italian, Hebrew, Chinese, JapaMichael Norton nese or any other foreign language is an asset to be valued for sure. But what about learning to speak and communicate in ways that lead us to the mutual success of ourselves and others? The value found in learning to speak words that lift others up instead of tearing them down is found in learning the language of success.

And for some, learning the language of success is as foreign as learning Arabic or Russian. Whether it is because this is the way we were talked to all of our lives or because

While participating in a meeting with an executive who I had just met that day, I was caught off guard by his consistent use of profanity and in the way that he talked down to his team during the meeting. The executive had left the session a few minutes early and as I was packing up and saying my goodbyes, one of the team members apologized on behalf of her boss. She must have sensed that I had taken exception to the tone of the meeting and her boss’s apparent lack of self-awareness about what he said and how he said it. She offered, “That is just the way it is around here.”

Asking a few more questions I found out that morale was low, employee turnover was high, collaboration didn’t exist, and it was his way or the highway. Her next statement inspired this column, “Having him learn to speak to us differently would be like teaching him a foreign language.”

Science shows that vaccinations save lives

easles vaccinations almost wiped out the disease from the United States in 2000.

Elimination meant measles no longer spread, because most people were vaccinated. However, in 2019, instead of celebrating public health successes, we are losing ground.

GUEST So far this year, the number of COLUMN measles cases in the U.S. is the second highest since 2000.

Today, there are outbreaks of measles in Washington state, New York, California, New Jersey and Michigan, and New York City just declared a John M. Douglas Jr. public health emergency because the outbreak there had become so severe.

Such outbreaks are a blunt reminder of how vulnerable we are in Colorado.

For the 2017-18 school year, Colorado’s kindergarten vaccination rate for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) ranked second to last in the U.S., with a coverage rate of 89 percent. Because measles is so highly contagious, we need 95 percent coverage to keep it under control and prevent an outbreak.

Our state finally passed an Extreme Risk Protection Order amid wailing and gnashing of teeth from NRA supporters and some sheriffs and politicians around the state. Was this young

break for countless families. Vaccines have completely eradicated smallpox and are close to doing so for polio; they have also reduced disability and suffering from more than 18 diseases preventable by vaccines.

Yet, vaccines are victims of their own success. Keep in mind that because vaccines work so well to protect people, most of us haven’t seen the devastating consequences of diseases such as measles and mumps. In 2017 in Colorado, more than 9,000 children were taken to the hospital because they were ill from a disease that could have been prevented by vaccination. Tri-County Health Department serves Adams, Arapahoe, and Douglas counties, and we are seeing measles, mumps and whooping cough reemerge among unvaccinated people.

Decisions by parents not to vaccinate their children is a growing public health issue across the world. Such “vaccine hesitancy” is considered by the World Health Organization to be among the most important of all global health issues. It’s also an issue in our jurisdiction: Among 1,135 child care centers, kindergartens and schools, parents of nearly 8,000 students opted out of having their child receive a recommended vaccine by using a personal belief or religious exemption. Much of this hesitancy is based upon an increasing amount of misinformation about safe vaccines actually are. Such misunderstanding can lead to concern among some parents who are trying to do the best they can for their child’s health and thus are cautious about health decisions. That’s understandable. But the truth is that vaccines are safe. Some of the best minds in science continuously study vaccines to ensure they are safe and effective — for the community, and for their own children. Myths about vaccine risks — such as the unfortunate fraudulent report that vaccines can cause autism — have been regularly assessed and debunked.

Now, the process for a parent to claim a non-medical exemption so their child can enter school without meeting vaccination requirements is

easier than vaccinating a child. House Bill 1312, currently under consideration by the Colorado legislature, asks parents considering a non-medical exemption to put in time and consideration — just as the overwhelming majority of parents who do vaccinate their children take the time to do. This is important because vaccination is not only a personal choice. Whether or not a parent vaccinates their own child has very real impacts on people around them in the larger community.

Diseases quickly become outbreaks when we don’t work together. Take away vaccination and disease will return. As a part of this community, we have a responsibility to each other.

Our dad grew up in Northbridge, Massachusetts. His parents were Polish immigrants. He and his siblings earned money during the Great Depression by selling rags, picking and selling blueberries, and other odd jobs. For fun, they fished and swam in the ponds near their home.

During World War II, Dad joined the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). He was a cook, and later boxed to entertain the troops. He traveled to bases across the United States. A high point in his career was a fight that was refereed by the great Jack Dempsey.

After the military, he moved to Colorado, where he met Frances Jean Gay. They were married in 1953. He adopted Fran’s son, John Cunningham.

They had a daughter, Jil, in 1959. Dad, a proud union member, worked at Gates Rubber Company for 30 years.

After retiring, he made some memorable fishing trips to Alaska, Canada, and Galveston, Texas.

Mom passed away in 1992. A couple of years later, Dad began baking cookies, cakes, and pies, and gave them away everywhere he went. He became known as “Stan the Cookie Man.” He approached this hobby with love and intensity, baking thousands of cookies, and hundreds of cakes and pies.

Our Dad was a good, hard working man who always took care of us, and gave us everything he could, but most of all, he loved us. And we loved him.

He will be greatly missed.

A GLIMPSE OF HISTORY Cinco De Mayo — or the fifth of May — is an annual celebration honoring the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Traditions in the state of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City, include military parades, recreations of the battle and other festive events. Cinco De Mayo is not a federal holiday, so for many Mexicans it’s just like any other day.

Across cities and college campuses in the United States, these tend to be the staples of Cinco de Mayo. Popular Mexican American restaurants and rooftop bars in the Denver metro area typically overflow on this party holiday.

This year Cinco de Mayo, the fifth of May, falls on a Sunday.

Aside from the fun it brings, the holiday is rich with history, a celebration of triumph and culture.

For Andrea Barela — who heads the largest two-day Cinco de Mayo celebration in the state, held May 4 and 5 this year — it’s a weekend for cultures to blend. In today’s political climate, she explains, that can otherwise be a challenge.

“With the turmoil and racism our country is experiencing, this is the weekend we forget all of that and come together as a community to celebrate,” said Barela, the president of NEWSED Community Development, which promotes economic success of underserved populations in the Denver metro area. “These are cultural events, they are significant and they should be maintained.”

History Cinco de Mayo — sometimes mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day — is celebrated by a population of residents in the Mexican state of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City.

The day honors May 5, 1862, when the Mexican Army defeated European invaders at the Battle of Puebla. The triumph was unexpected — Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza led the outnumbered and poorly supplied Mexicans, according to the History Channel. Nonetheless they triumphed and maintained their land.

Cinco de Mayo traditions in Puebla include military parades, recreations of the battle and other festive events.

On May 4 and 5, Civic Center Park in downtown Denver turns into a mini Mexico for the annual Cinco de Mayo Festival. The two-day event celebrates the country’s culture and history.

But because it isn’t a federal holiday, Cinco de Mayo is just like any other day for many Mexicans.

“Puebla is actually the only place in Mexico that celebrates this day,” said Highlands Ranch resident Lola Wiarco Dweck, who is of Mexican heritage, adding, “and in the U.S., it’s a holiday that’s observed more by MexicanAmericans and Americans than Mexicans.”

didn’t celebrate the holiday but she did perform ballet folklórico at some Cinco de Mayo festivals in Los Angeles, she said.

Today Dweck, a professional chef, celebrates by making foods that commemorate the colors of the Mexican flag: red, white and green, and cooking mole poblano, one of Puebla’s best-known dishes.

In 1987, Denver’s first Cinco de Mayo festival took place in the La Alma-Lincoln Park neighborhood, off Santa Fe Drive. Until recently, nearly 90 percent of the neighborhood’s population was Hispanic, according to Barela, whose mother helped start the festival.

“It really started as a street event made to highlight the Santa Fe corridor and the west Denver neighborhood, to boost economic development,” Barela said. “It became very popular very quickly.”

It became so popular that it outgrew its original location and moved to Civic Center Park, near the Colorado Capitol in downtown Denver.

One of the largest in the nation, Denver’s Cinco de Mayo festival attracts about 400,000 people a year, depending on the weather.

The two-day extravaganza features three stages — one with bands from Mexico, one with local bands and one featuring dancers — more than 200 vendors, a parade, Chihuahua races, kids’ activities, folklórico dancers and a lowrider car show — what Barela calls a Chicano tradition.

“It’s so cultural,” Barela said of the festival, “that it’s like visiting Mexico in the city of Denver for a weekend.”

Natural materials form art at Chatfield Farms

culptor Patrick Dougherty creates immersive sculptures from natural materials — saplings and branches — and for his upcoming reveal at Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield Farms, it’s likely the materials came SONYA’S from on-site. He SAMPLER weaves the materials into whimsical and complicated architectural forms and the works remain on exhibit until they deteriorate naturally. The process of forming a large piece takes three Sonya Ellingboe weeks, and this new structure will be unveiled to the public on April 27.

It will be placed in a clearing near the Earl J. Sinnamon Visitor Center, close to the Chatfield Farms parking area, at 8500 W. Deer Creek Canyon Road (from Wadsworth Boulevard just south of C-470, go west on Deer Creek Canyon Road — you will see the gardens/farms on the left.

Sharan Wilson started in her new job as executive director of Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center on April 8 after the THAC board of directors found her to be best-qualified for the multi-faceted position of the many people who applied.

Her career experience is with nonprofits and Wilson their operation and she is excited that contracts for Town Hall’s next season are mostly signed and ready for announcement soon.

Watch for what comes next!

Wilson has been in Colorado since 1984 and grew up in neighboring Nebraska, where she attended junior college. With an Air Force husband, the family moved frequently in the early years, but ended up in Omaha.

Her master’s degree in journalism

(emphasis on PR) is from University of Nebraska/Omaha. A job with the Omaha World-Herald was focused mainly on advertising, she said.

“I raised my family here (Littleton area),” she said, where her three children attended local schools.

Wilson worked in cable television for a time in the late 1970s, with the celebrated Bill Daniels, involving cable companies across the U.S. Another nonprofit organization Wilson worked with trained and supplied service dogs for veterans.

She is now meeting with each Town Hall board member individually (one a week), “raising community knowledge,” and getting familiar with Town Hall’s operations, and says she is looking forward to meeting Main Street business owners and operators.

She is active in her church, South Suburban Christian, reads a lot and loves to travel to new places, she said.

herry Creek senior Brendan Eckerman is looking forward to the Class 5A state swimming championship, which will be held in May. It will be the fourth state meet he has competed in, and he knows how to prepare and what to expect.

“Even college swimmers and really, really high-level swimmers say the most nervous they have even been for a swim meet is for high school state,” said Eckerman, who tied for second in the 100 freestyle and was fourth in the 200 IM at last season’s state championships.

“So the biggest part, not just for me, but for every team across the state is going into state confident, staying confident and managing the stress that goes with it.”

Eckerman, committed to swim at Wisconsin, is solid in four events but is specializing in freestyle races this season and has some of the top times in the state.

“I want to win the 50 freestyle this year,” he said. “I know I am going to be in that. So far the team is ranked No. 1 and would love to bring home a state championship for the team.”

COACH’S TAKE: ‘From where he started as a freshman, attitude-wise, we didn’t want him on the roster. To see him as a senior, it’s a great feeling.

We needed him to be a leader.’

Q&A with Eckerman What do you eat for pre-swim nourishment?

It depends on the swim meet.

When we have meets after school, I just go home, take a nap and then eat a couple granola bars.

If it is a big meet, usually the Wednesday before State we go out to Maggiano’s and have a big steak dinner and load up with pasta. The biggest thing for me is to drink a lot of water at a meet.

Swimming has taken over my life the past couple years. I try to get outdoors as much as I possibly can. I had a ski pass this year. In the summer, I want to do a lot of hiking.

What or who motivates you most to excel in swimming?

Seeing how hard this team has worked this year drives not only me but the rest of my teammates

What is the toughest race for you to swim?

When it comes to high school, I passionately hate the 200 IM. I’m good at it so I keep swimming it.

What would be a perfect performance in your sport?

A big thing in swimming is best times. So my work is paying off and getting best times and doing all that I can to help the team.

What is the hardest thing about being a high school swimmer?

The discipline. It’s the determination and it will test you every different way that it can. You have to get up so brutally early every morning and not get home until 7 o’clock at night.

What do you like to do away from

What are your habits before a race?

I always get up on the block and when I’m ready for a race I clap three times.

ebastian Anderson is 16 years old and missing out on some of the fun activities that other high school students are doing since he opted to join the adult world.

But he is living a dream.

Anderson on April 3 became the youngest player in club history to sign a contract with the Colorado RapOVERTIME ids of Major League Soccer and now needs to follow the commitments that go along with being a professional athlete.

“It is definitely the life Jim Benton I chose,” said Anderson, a junior at ThunderRidge High School.

“I have three periods at ThunderRidge and then I have three classes online,” he added. “It’s kind of tough sometimes but we sat down with the teachers and they knew I was going to leave a little bit early sometimes and show up late sometimes. They have been super helpful.

“I come in on the off day on Wednesday and stay in school as much as I can and make up as much time as I can with the teachers. The grades aren’t as good as if I was in school full time but everyone is helpful. A lot of people talk to me about it (the contract) at school. I just say thank you.”

Anderson, a defender who played for Real Colorado before switching to the Rapids’ Development Academy two years ago, agreed to a Homegrown contract. It is a five-year contract with an option for 2024.

He is the 11th player to sign a Homegrown contract with the Rapids.

The Homegrown Player Rule allows MLS soccer teams to sign local players from their own development academies directly to MLS first team rosters. According to Top Drawer Soccer, the MLS pays out around $9 million in lump Homegrown salaries per year, and at last count there were 126 players in the league that have Homegrown pacts.

“A year ago I saw all these guys, especially Cole Bassett, started training with the first team, and he was doing so well and moved up to the first team full time,” said Anderson. “Cole and I are good buddies and I thought I’m not too far off from that, and if I work hard I will get the opportunity, and sure enough it came.”

Now Anderson is working to get into his first MLS contest after being a substitute for two matches.

“That’s obviously the next goal for me with the Rapids right now,” said Anderson. “I made the A team the last two trips and was eligible to play and that was a big step for me. For me

Big mountain snowboarding Freeriding is something new and forced me to do some research.

Well, freeriding is a type of snowboarding or skiing that uses natural, un-groomed slopes without a pre-determined course, goals or rules.

Snowboarders sometimes refer to freeriding as backcountry, sidecountry, big mountain or extreme riding.

Lucas Lemire, a 14-year-old student at Castle Rock Middle School, is a com-

petitive big mountain snowboarder on Team Summit Colorado. He recently placed third in the 12-14 age group at the IFSA Big Mountain North American Championships, held at Kicking Horse in British Columbia on Aril 12.

According to the Summit Daily E-Edition, Lemire executed a few nice turns before hitting a four-foot drop into another chute. He then carved and connected fluid turns before hitting another drop near the judges and came to a stop with a textbook turn.

Lemire told the newspaper that he is “trying to set a goal for myself to get at least one podium next year. And that’s going to be hard.”

ACC director earns PTK Paragon adviser award STAFF REPORT

Shari Culver, director of the Arapahoe Community College Career and Transfer Center, received a Phi Theta Kappa Paragon Award for New Advisors.

Culver was one of 15 recipients from more than 1,200 international chapters of Phi Theta Kappa to earn the annual distinction. The award was presented during the PTK Catalyst international convention April 4-6 in Orlando. Honorees received commemorative medallions and were recognized during the second general session of PTK Catalyst.

“Shari has been a wonderful adviser for ACC’s Sigma Phi Chapter, serving as an ally and an advocate for our PTK students,” Dr. Josie Mills,
