The band plays on: Music school adapts to online lessons Do Re Mi Lessons says video tutorials are anything but virtual

Don’t stop the music. While some businesses struggle through the COVID-19 pandemic, Dean Hirschfield’s music school is learning to adapt.

Hirschfield and his wife Desiree opened Do Re Mi Lessons in Littleton three years ago, offering a wide range of one-on-one music lessons on numerous instruments.

When Gov. Jared Polis’ stay-at-home order shut down their studio, the Hirschfields went online.

“We don’t like to say they’re ‘virtual’ meetings,” Hirschfield said. “That makes it sound like they’re fake.

These are real lessons, just online.”

There are advantages to the new paradigm: Hirschfield, a percussion teacher, was able for the first time to see some of his students’ home drum kits, and offered pointers on

The school’s 15 teachers are all on board. One of the tricky parts is learning to use audio tools to hear notes clearly over videoconferencing software.

A few students have

dropped out, but others have signed up.

“Music families are super supportive,” Hirschfield said.

“It’s a good escape from the craziness, and it gives people a sense of normalcy. Through all of this, you’ve still got

Some of the school’s teachers are on hard times. All are professional musicians, and all have lost gigs as venues have shut down. The steady

revenue of teaching at Do Re Mi is helping soften the blow, Hirschfield said.

Online lessons can be draining, especially when dealing with laggy internet connections, technical difficulties, or students whose home practice spaces aren’t as conducive to concentration as the studio.

But the enthusiasm of students helps make up for it.

Hirschfield said it’s too soon to say when the studio will be open for in-person lessons again, but it could be a while until everyone is comfortable being in enclosed spaces.

“Even if they lift the restrictions, we suspect people will filter back in,” Hirschfield said.

So far, Hirschfield said he doesn’t think he’ll need to apply for federal small business relief. He’s worried about school band program fundraisers, so the school will donate $20 from every new student’s fees to their school’s music program.

“It’s inspiring how much our community of students and families value their lessons,” Hirschfield said. “We mean so much to each other, and we’re going to stick it out and be here for each other.”

At Littleton Adventist Hospital, a good prognosis Chief doctor says shutdowns bought valuable time by blocking surge

Things are looking up at Littleton Adventist Hospital.

More than a month into widespread shutdowns amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital is far better prepared to deal with the disease, and not seeing the surge in patients that doctors anticipated.

“We’re feeling much better than we were a few weeks ago,” said Dr. Mark Elliott, who heads the hospital’s medical staff.

Elliott said he was not allowed by hospital administration to share how many COVIDpositive patients they’ve treated, how many have died, or how many have Elliott recovered.

But, he said, the number of patients has not pushed up against the hospital’s intensive care or ventilator capacity, which were rapidly expanded in the past month.

“We’re here 100% thanks to the shutdowns and the stay-at-home order,” Elliott said. “It gave us time to take a

breather, prepare, stock up and train.

We’re absolutely flattening the curve.

If it weren’t for the shutdowns, we’d be in a much scarier position today.”

That doesn’t mean society is out of the woods yet, Elliott said.

“To proceed safely, the shutdowns need to be lifted in a step-by-step, strategic manner,” Elliott said. “We’re definitely facing a new normal for months, if not for the next few years.”

A “second wave” of infections is possible once shutdowns are lifted, but Elliott said the medical community is far better equipped to handle it — that is, if the public keeps doing their part.

“The population of Colorado is smart. If people continue to be good about social distancing and self-quarantines, we’ll be ready for another wave,” he said. “Be patient. Don’t get too anxious to start right up again.”

Littleton Adventist is also now far better stocked on personal protective equipment, or PPE. Lockheed Martin donated thousands of gowns, Elliott said, and Ford Motor Company donated thousands of face shields.

COVID-19 patients are treated “with oxygen and the highest level of isolation,” Elliott said.

“The average length of stay is much longer than almost any other disease, and patients on ventilators are on them almost twice as long as normal,” Elliott said.

At least eight residents of Littleton senior homes have died from COVID19, according to state records.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment began publishing weekly totals of known cases and deaths at senior facilities on April 15 in response to pressure from journalists to increase transparency.

The data show outbreaks of COVID19 at 83 senior homes statewide, including five in Littleton: Cherrelyn Healthcare Center, Highline Place Memory Care, Libby Bortz Assisted Living, Littleton Care and Rehab Center, and RiverPointe Senior Living.

Business owners plead for help as city weighs grant program City of Littleton, facing its own shortfalls, talks about giving cash to struggling shops and restaurants

Littleton city officials are hashing out plans to provide grants to struggling small businesses in coming weeks, but some business owners say the money can’t come soon enough.

City council discussed creating a fund to boost small businesses hit by the COVID-19 shutdowns at its April 14 study session, proposing using $400,000 in funds left over after the dissolution of the city’s urban renewal authority in February.

Council said it would discuss the terms of a program at an upcoming study session, meaning the soonest a formal decision would come is at the May 5 regular council meeting.

Other metro area cities, including Denver and Englewood, have already begun grant programs for struggling small businesses.

“If we had the opportunity to keep local businesses operating sooner rather than later, it’s incumbent on us to do it,” Mayor Pro Tem Scott Melin told council at the meeting. “If we’re agile and get a grant program togeth-

er, we could make a difference. These two weeks are a crucial time.”

No kidding, say some local business owners.

“The city needs to jump in and help,” said Keven Kinaschuk, the owner of McKinners Pizza Bar in downtown Littleton. “We’ve been on our own. The city could at least figure out a game plan.”

Kinaschuk said he laid off 18 of his 24 employees in the days after Gov. Jared Polis ordered all restaurants to halt dine-in service in March, and the restaurant’s take-out service is only covering a quarter of normal sales.

Kinaschuk said he applied for all federal relief funds he was eligible for, but hadn’t received a penny as of April 15. The Paycheck Protection Program, a federal relief effort intended to cover payroll costs for small businesses, ran out of money on April 16, just two weeks after it opened, according to news reports.

Meanwhile, Kinaschuk said, nobody from the City of Littleton has reached out to him to see what his needs are.

He floated ideas like suspension of some city fees. He likes the idea of a grant program, but said time is of the essence.

“If the federal government doesn’t come through, and I’m not convinced they will, it’ll be lights out for a lot of people, including probably me,” Kinaschuk said.

Elliott rejected claims that COVID-19 death tolls are inflated with people who died of complications other than the virus itself.

“I’ve seen what COVID does,” Elliott said. “It affects many parts of the body, including the heart and brain.

If someone dies of a heart attack or stroke while they have the virus, COVID makes those much more likely and much worse.”

Overall, though, Elliott is encouraged by conditions at the hospital.

Elective procedures have been halted by state order until April 26, and while Elliott said the order may be extended, the hospital is ready to resume procedures like joint replacements as soon as they’re allowed.

The hospital has also fared better than expected because car wrecks and other injuries are down as people stay home. Other patients have taken advantage of “telehealth” appointments, meeting with doctors by videoconfer-

Unemployment claims break Great Recession record Federal law will make gig workers eligible for benefits

During the fallout from the Great Recession, the week with the highest number of claims for unemployment assistance filed was the week ending Jan. 9, 2010, with 7,749 claims.

This year, the week ending March 21 — when Colorado closed dine-in restaurant and bar service, and hair and nail salons, spas, and tattoo and massage parlors — shattered that record.

Then, the next three weeks saw the numbers increase fivefold.

Colorado’s economic upheaval during the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted hundreds of thousands of lives, reflected in no more concrete terms than the number of Coloradans applying for unemployment benefits: those who have been laid off, had work hours reduced or have been furloughed, meaning temporarily laid off.

The week ending March 21 saw 19,745 new unemployment claims filed, according to a Colorado Department of Labor and Employment news release. That set a new state record, far outpacing the Great Recession numbers. The week prior clocked in at just 2,321.

For the week ending March 28,

61,583 initial unemployment claims came in. The following week, 46,065 initial unemployment claims were filed. In the week ending April 11, the department counted 104,217 initial unemployment claims filed.

Those four weeks represent the month-long period with the most unemployment claims filed in Colorado on record, according to Cher Haavind, deputy executive director of the state Labor Department.

In the coming weeks, Colorado may see the most unemployment benefits paid by dollar amount on record, possibly topping the record from the Great Recession, which lasted 18 months from December 2007 to June 2009 and created ripple effects of job losses lasting long afterward. A direct comparison is difficult because Great Recession data is monthly, said Ryan Gedney, senior economist for the department.

“That said, we paid out roughly $103 million in regular (unemployment) benefits May 2009 — the highest monthly total on record. From week ending March 21 to week ending April 11, we paid out $109 million in regular (unemployment) benefits,” Gedney said.

Colorado’s unemployment rate increased from 2.5% in February to 4.5% in March, according to a news release from the department. That’s Colorado’s highest unemployment rate since August 2015, according to the release.

The unemployment rate is measured

based on the week that includes the 12th of the month — March 8 to March 14 — so the change in unemployment rate reflects the impact on Colorado’s employment during the first stages of the COVID-19 outbreak in the state, but before Colorado ordered certain businesses to close during the week ending March 21.

Working on wait times The state Labor Department experienced unprecedented traffic from those looking to file claims, and department officials in April were in conversations to outsource some call activity — as other states have done — to help take pressure off the regular call center, Haavind said.

The system “was handling 2,000 claims a week — now we’re at, in some weeks, 60,000. The sheer volume of calls to the call center is just unmanageable,” Haavind told reporters April 16.

Haavind also warned the public about fraud: She’s heard reports of people going door-to-door misrepresenting themselves or calling and asking for bank routing information and saying it regards unemployment benefits, for example.

“Just to remind folks, you should never be asked for personal identifying information” in those ways, Haavind said.

Data across industries The five industries with highest

number of claims for the week ending March 28 were: • Accommodation and food services: 21,124 claims; • Health care and social service: 9,717; • Retail: 7,400; • Other services, such as nail and beauty salons and barbers: 5,914; • Arts, entertainment and recreation: 4,080.

“Now, you may be asking why health care and social assistance claims are in that top five list,” the department said in a “talking points” sheet for a call with reporters. “The primary driver in the increase in those claims is from offices of dentists. Offices of physicians, other health practitioners — like chiropractors and optometrists — and child day care services are also seeing substantial increases in claims.”

Gig workers, others now eligible Those who work part-time or temporary positions as gig workers — such as driving for Lyft — are also eligible for unemployment benefits in light of the recently passed federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. On April 17, the state announced that people who have lost gig work and similar previously ineligible positions will be able to apply for benefits starting April 20.

Goddard Middle School’s missile leaves for new home Old Nike Hercules missile to get full restoration at Pueblo aircraft museum

After more than half a century, Goddard Middle School’s old missile has lifted off.

A crew lifted the 41-foot-tall Nike Hercules missile from its footing in front of the west Littleton school on April 18, before securing it to a flatbed truck to head south to southern Colorado’s Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum.

Littleton Public Schools officials made plans over the winter to remove the missile, which had been placed in front of the school when it opened in 1968. The removal was planned to make way for a planned expansion of the school’s parking area and entryway.

The removal was originally slated before the beginning of June, but LPS officials chose to get a jump on the construction project during the COVID-19 shutdowns, said Terry Davis, the district’s director of operations.

“Construction projects can take a while, and we wanted to take advantage of the extra time,” Davis said.

“We were looking at a window of opportunity, and we wanted to make sure the missile made it to the museum without a hitch.”

School officials said moving the missile to another spot on the property would have been expensive and timeconsuming, and eaten up precious funding better spent on expensive infrastructure upgrades.

Numerous Denver-area museums, including the Littleton Museum and Wings Over the Rockies, turned down the missile in Feburary, saying it was in poor shape or didn’t fit their collections. Local cities and parks rejected the missile as well.

The Pueblo aircraft museum is paying the entire cost of the removal and shipping, Davis said.

Truck driver Travis Heikes of La Jara in southern Colorado volunteered to haul the missile to Pueblo for no charge.

“I wanted to do my part,” Heikes said. “Education and history are important.”

Once in Pueblo, the plan is to restore the missile to how it would have appeared on active duty protecting America from Soviet bombers in the 1960s, said Shawn Kirscht, the museum’s curator.

“We’re really grateful that we get a chance to restore this piece of history,” Kirscht said. “It’s a rare opportunity.”

The missile will be third in line for restoration behind two other projects, Kirscht said: a replica Supermarine Spitfire fighter plane, like the ones that defended England from Nazi attack in the Battle of Britain, and a Bell UH-1 Huey helicopter, a type legendary for its service in Vietnam.

Once the restoration is complete, perhaps in a year or so, the missile will join a Hawk and Pershing missile beside the museum, which is home to such memorable warbirds as a World War II-era B-29 bomber and F-15 and F-16 fighter jets.

The missile’s future is fitting, said Ben Millspaugh, the retired Littleton Public Schools science and aviation teacher who procured the missile for the school in 1968.

“That missile inspired generations of kids who came through that school,” Millspaugh said. “Now it can inspire future generations alongside

other pieces of our military history.

I’m looking forward to taking a drive down to Pueblo to see it in its original glory.”

Millspaugh sought the missile for the school to honor its namesake, Dr. Robert Goddard, who pioneered modern rocketry in the 1920s.

Going to Pueblo is a return of sorts for the missile: Millspaugh requested a decommissioned missile from the Pueblo Army Depot, expecting a 10foot model, but was shocked when a truck rolled up to the school carrying the 41-foot Nike Hercules.

The missile was installed at the school amid great fanfare, including a performance by an Air Force band, speeches by Air Force officers and Lockheed Martin officials, and

“It was the Space Age,” Millspaugh said. “It was a year before we put a man on the moon. It was a beautiful thing, and a tribute to Colorado’s proud aerospace industry.”

Millspaugh said he knows oldtimers will miss seeing the missile outside the school, but said it won’t be far away.

“Those kids who grew up looking at it, you’re adults now,” Millspaugh said. “Next year you can load up your kids and your wife and drive two hours south, and you can show them the missile that brought us so much pride. I’m satisfied.”

Renters struggling as COVID-19 pandemic drags on Despite temporary halt on evictions, tenants face hardship, uncertainty

Anna Alling-Rafferty spent her pregnancy in a homeless shelter.

With the help of a housing assistance group, she, her husband David and their daughter Remi, now six months old, landed a two-bedroom apartment in Aurora. They moved in on March 17, as efforts to contain COVID-19 reached a fever pitch.

Alling-Rafferty, 25, found herself stuck: Her new full-time job at a pawn shop meant she no longer qualified for government assistance, but her hours were cut amid the pandemic, and stockpiling food to endure cascading shutdowns left her broke.

Short on rent and baby formula, she turned to the internet for help. She appealed to the Facebook group “Help Needed in Denver Metro COVID-19,” and the floodgates opened.

“We got food, cans of formula, even furniture,” Alling-Rafferty said.

“Someone left a box of diapers outside our door. Most importantly, someone donated enough money to cover rent.

I spent so long being looked down on when I was homeless, and here I got nothing but kindness and support.”

Now, with another month of rent looming, she’s caught again: Waiting on a stimulus check that hasn’t arrived, and trying to hash out a possible rent deferment with her property management agency, but worried that deferring rent will only increase her burden in coming months. If all else fails, she may turn back to the kindness of strangers.

“It’s nerve-racking,” she said. “I have a baby now. I never want to be homeless again, but I know it can happen. I hope we figure this out.”

“It’s pretty dire,” said Zach Neumann, a Denver-based tenants’ rights attorney who founded the COVID-19 Eviction Defense Project, a network to help tenants navigate the pandemic.

“I’ve never seen a moment like this.”

Officials in many cities and counties have declared short-term moratoria on eviction proceedings, and the federal government has temporarily halted eviction proceedings on tenants in homes with federally-backed mortgages, but Neumann said many landlords are still placing demands for payment on tenants’ doors.

“We’re anticipating a massive wave of eviction proceedings entering the court process once the moratoria are lifted,” Neumann said. A study Neumann conducted with university researchers suggests nearly half a million Coloradans could face eviction in coming months. About a third of Colorado residents are renters, according to state data.

Federal stimulus checks and unemployment insurance will likely ease the burden, Neumann said, but many tenants still haven’t received that money with the May rent date fast approaching. Rent deferments and late fees mean many tenants will see their payments spike.

The pain stretches across the system, Neumann said. With many tenants unable to pay, many landlords

are in danger of being unable to pay their mortgages. Though landlords with federally-backed mortgages can defer their payments, that only applies to about a third of mortgages.

Though many activists are calling for a widespread rent and mortgage freeze -- Denver City Council unanimously passed a nonbinding resolution in support of the idea in mid-April -- Neumann said he’s not sure that’s legally feasible, a position shared by Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, who said he doesn’t have the authority to effectively suspend private contracts.

A longer-term statewide or national eviction moratorium to supersede the current patchwork would go a long way, Neumann said.

“It would buy tenants and landlords time, and alleviate the anxiety tenants are feeling,” he said.

‘Everyone wins when people stay in their homes’ It’s in the best interest of landlords and tenants for people to stay in their homes, said Michelle Lyng, spokesperson for the Colorado Apartment Association, a trade association representing 75% of the state’s rental housing owners.

The association has been lobbying at the federal level for mortgage deferment programs, Lyng said, but said that’s not a panacea. For many landlords, the mortgage covers less than half their costs, with the rest going toward maintenance, payroll and utilities. Landlords make a 9% profit margin on average, she said.

A COVID-19 task force convened by the association issued recommendations to property owners, including forgoing late fees. The task force is also recommending tenants in dire straits reach out to charitable organizations for rent assistance.

“The first step for tenants is to have a frank conversation with your housing provider,” Lyng said. “It’s an awkward conversation, but you’re not alone. Nobody wants empty units, and everyone wins when people stay in their homes.”

Knowing what to ask for Meanwhile, charitable organizations, especially those offering rent

assistance, are seeing demand on limited resources explode.

Daily call volume has more than tripled at Mile High United Way’s 211 call center, a clearinghouse that connects people in need to aid agencies.

“In normal circumstances, rent resources are available at the beginning of the month and run out pretty quickly,” said Fermin Avila, who runs the 211 call center. “That was pre-COVID. Are we on stable footing?

Not really. Things are shifting frequently. As resources are exhausted, we keep searching for what else is out there.”

With rental assistance funds a finite resource, Avila said the call center’s “resource navigators” help callers find what he calls the “silent need” -- other ways to help the caller hadn’t thought of.

“How about utility assistance? Food assistance? Help looking for a job?”

Avila said. “If we can ease the burden in other parts of their lives, they can free up money toward rent. Everyone needs help sometimes, but they might now know what to ask for.”

‘The solutions aren’t working’ For some tenants, relying on charitable organizations and government assistance doesn’t cut it.

“Putting the onus on aid groups is saying it’s up to poor people to help poor people,” said Desiree Kane, one of the founders of “Colorado Rent Strike and Eviction Defense,” a Facebook group focused on mutual aid for tenants during the pandemic, now topping 4,000 members. “The state’s unemployment system is terribly backed up. These solutions aren’t working the way they’re supposed to.”

Kane said despite eviction moratoria, the group is filling with people sharing angry letters from landlords, many threatening to throw tenants out for nonpayment.

The housing crisis is also exposing racial inequity, Kane said — much like people of color are disproportionately the victims of COVID-19, black, Latino and indigenous people are an outsize number of people facing housing insecurity.

“We’re trying to get people to come together over this,” Kane said. “Ultimately, small-time landlords aren’t our enemies — it’s the banks we bailed out in 2008. That’s why it’s important that we’re calling for a full-scale rent and mortgage freeze.”

Kane doesn’t buy Polis’ argument that he lacks the power to freeze rents.

“It’s the only equitable answer,” Kane said. “This is only going to get worse. The economy isn’t going to magically get back on track in May.” In the meantime, back in Anna Alling-Rafferty’s Aurora apartment, the young mom is doing what she can to stay in her home.

“I hope this entire situation makes people realize our economic situation wasn’t as stable as we said, even before the virus,” Alling-Rafferty said.

“Let’s stay focused on helping each other, and keep building the connections we’re making now. Let’s focus less on ourselves, and ask each other, ‘Are you OK?’”

Area leaders urge census participation Effort to get accurate count is forced to adapt amid pandemic ripple effects

As Jefferson County Commissioner Casey Tighe watched people stay at home and socially distance amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he couldn’t help but see their efforts as an act of patriotism.

There’s another way people can help their country during the crisis, he said, and that’s by completing the 2020 census, which launched as communities across the nation ramped up public health measures in connection with the pandemic response.

“Ask your family, your friends: ‘Have you filled out the census?’”

Tighe said.

While the census may not be top of mind for people amid the pandemic, as they worry about economic hardships and their health, local nonprofit and elected leaders are urging residents to use the extra time at home to partake in the “the gold standard” of data collection.

Participation, particularly now, is paramount, she said.

“This is a way to help Colorado rebuild and make sure that it can get its fair share of support continuing for the next 10 years,” Winbourn said.

“I think in a time like now, we can see how much we rely on services and the government services.”

Together We Count started in 2017 and will operate only for the duration of the 2020 census effort. The organization already expected challenges to the 2020 census because of distrust in government and the possibility that some people will face hurdles responding in new ways.

Before COVID-19 hit, the U.S. Census Bureau was already gearing up for people to respond online, by phone and by mail — for the first time in census history.

Together We Count focuses on reaching populations like renters, immigrants, refugees and people with low literacy — all demographics the census bureau defines as hard to count, Winbourn said. The nonprofit also adds older adults to that list and stresses that young children count.

“We knew that it was going to be a more challenging time,” she said.

“Particularly with COVID, it’s really affected the timeline.”

Gillian noted the census opened on March 12, shortly before social distancing measures took off.

RESPONSE BY COUNTY Here are the response rates for some metro area counties, according to an April 13 news release by the U.S. Census Bureau: Douglas County: 63.9% Jefferson County: 63.2% Arapahoe County: 58% Elbert County: 56.3% Adams County: 53% Denver County: 51.5% Local governments and nonprofits had to scrap many of their traditional outreach methods to promote the census because of COVID-19, like providing education at community events and meetings. Many said they are now relying more heavily on social media to get the word out.

The U.S. Census Bureau adjusted its 2020 census operational timeline in response to the pandemic. Field activities are not likely to resume until June 1. The current deadline to respond is Aug. 14, said spokeswoman Laurie Cipriano.

As of April 13, the Colorado response rate trailed Kansas by less than 1 percentage point, coming in at No. 11 on the list of states with the best self-response date. Just shy of 52% of Colorado households had responded. The national self-response rate was 48%.

Within Colorado, two counties — Jefferson and Douglas — are neck-

and-neck for the best self-response rate in the state, with both above 63% as of an April 13 report. Commissioners for each county said they are competitive and shooting for that No. 1 slot.

“If you’re at home and you have access to computer and internet, you probably have some time to do it. It’s a way to break up your day,” Tighe said.

But there’s much more at stake than bragging rights, the commissioners stressed, as the census will determine how much federal funding is funneled down to local communities.

“There is so much that is based on getting an accurate count. We need to have a complete count and that means 100%,” said Douglas County Commissioner Lora Thomas.

Thomas, Tighe and Winbourn listed a slew of services impacted by the census.

Funding health-care clinics, Medicare and Medicaid, highways and transportation, disaster relief, educational programs, fire departments and human services are just some of the community services that rely on census data.

The data also informs the business community, such as helping grocery stores decide where to open locations, Winbourn said.

With restaurant sales restricted, some have shifted to a grocery model Some sell and deliver items like bread, milk and eggs

Before the COVID-19 pandemic reached Colorado, Indulge Bistro & Wine Bar was having a record year.

The restaurant’s three locations, Highlands Ranch, Golden and Centennial, were shut down for in-store dining March 17, along with the rest of the state’s sit-down food establishments.

“We knew it was going to have an impact on our business before the shutdowns,” said co-owner Peter Fatianow.

Fatianow, a long-time entrepreneur who owns the restaurant with his wife, said he knew the business would have to make a major shift to survive.

“Delivery can’t sustain a restaurant business right now,” he said.

The way he sees it, it doesn’t make sense to pay the costs of preparing the food in the hopes that there will be enough orders, he said.

Instead, he and his wife Delinda decided to switch their restaurant to a grocery model. The day after Gov. Jared Polis closed restaurants to dinein service, they opened the grocery and closed their kitchens for any food preparation.

“We were ready to roll,” Fatianow said.

Instead of shelves and carts, however, the store has dining tables and boxes of food products. Because of the virus, only five people are allowed

“It was very clear that the pain people were feeling is that they would go into grocery stores and shelves would be bare,” Fatianow said. “The other part is that higher risk people are concerned about touching grocery carts.”

The stores also deliver their grocery items, which include items like flour, bread, eggs, wine, vegetables, meat, fish and milk.

buns and a bottle of ketchup.

“When you add on the newly eligible workers under the CARES Act, we could easily see more than $200 million per month” paid in unemployment benefits in Colorado, Haavind said.

The state Unemployment Insurance Division has to reprogram its systems to provide the new benefits, the state Labor Department said in a news release. All eligible workers will receive these benefits backdated and will not lose out on any amount to which they are entitled, the release added.

The stress of layoffs When the restrictions on dine-in service were announced, Indulge had to lay off about 70 of its 80 employees, only keeping a few to help with the grocery store.

“I’ve never had to have a mass layoff in any companies,” Fatianow said.

“That was by far the hardest thing in my entrepreneurial career that I’ve ever had to do.”

During that first week, Fatianow and his remaining team worked up to 18 hours per day as they pivoted their entire business model, he said.

“We had to figure out a way these leases were going to get paid or they were going to come take our house,” he said. “It was survival.”

Now that the grocery model seems to be thriving, they’ve granted themselves a few moments of rest before they start in on the next steps: figuring out what happens when the sanctions are lifted.

“What will restaurants look like when we reopen?” he said. “Are people going to want to come back?”

Fatianow hopes to see the regulations that were waived to allow restaurants like his to sell bottled wine and grocery products permanently changed.

“We’re trying to be proactive… and provide additional revenue streams for restaurants that make it out of this,” he said.

Indulge isn’t the only restaurant that has adopted this approach. Others in the area have also started selling bulk or raw items like eggs, condiments and even toilet paper.

Tributary Food Hall in Golden has temporarily shifted to a gourmet grocery store. While Taste of Philly in Highlands Ranch started selling grocery items at the start of the shutdown, the store eventually stopped after not finding many buyers, owner Martin Garvey said.

“One of the reasons we’re able to do this is because we have a completely different supply chain,” Fatianow said.

Fatianow expected they would make some sales, he said. What surprised him, is just how excited people are about what they see as fewer germs and more accessible food.

“They appreciate that they don’t have to go to a grocery store,” he said.

“And we can help feed their family in a safe way.”

Completing the census takes minutes, Thomas said, estimating she finished in less than five minutes.

“It’s really straightforward,” she said. “There’s no trick questions. It’s easy to answer.”

COVID-19 rates disproportionately higher among minorities Blacks are 3.9% of state population but make up 7% of cases with race reported, Colorado data shows

Out of more than 5,000 COVID-19 cases with race and ethnicity data reported in Colorado, the black, Hispanic and native Hawaiian-Pacific Islander populations show statistically higher rates of the disease than others, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

While black or African American residents are 3.9% of the state population, they make up 7% of its cases, according to an April 13 news release.

That disparity between percentage of population and percentage of cases far outpaces all other race categories, aside from native Hawaiians-Pacific Islanders, who represent 0.6% of Colorado’s cases but make up just 0.1% of its population, according to the release.

The race and ethnicity data represent 67% of all reported COVID-19 cases in Colorado as of April 13. Cases with an unknown race or ethnicity

were excluded from the calculations.

Initial disease reports to public health departments often are missing information on race and ethnicity, according to the state health department, which is drafting a public health order to clarify the type of data the department needs from health care entities.

Explaining the disparity “Colorado has racial disparities in certain chronic diseases due to unequal access to health care and economic opportunities occurring over many generations,” the state health department said in the release.

Because studies have shown people with underlying health conditions are more likely to die of the virus, tracking racial and ethnic data is a high priority for the department, it continued.

“We know that social and health care inequities affect outcomes, and that becomes even more apparent in times of disaster,” Jill Hunsaker-Ryan, executive director of the department, said in the release. “There have been generations of institutionalized barriers to things like preventive medical care, healthy food, safe and stable housing, quality education, reliable transportation and clean air. Research shows that these types of factors are the most predictive of health outcomes.

“There is much to be learned from

POLIS ON DISPARITY Gov. Jared Polis commented on the racial differences in COVID-19 cases at an April 13 news conference, saying that asthma and diabetes — and diet — disproportionately are problems for racial minorities and could be relevant to the disparity.

Asked what his administration is doing about the disparity, Polis said, “We care about everybody” and that people live in integrated communities.

“You can’t say we’re … stopping it for Hispanics and not for white people or for blacks and not for Hispanics,” Polis said.

“The reason to stay at home is for everybody; that drives down infection rates across the board.”

“The things I’ve heard is that it’s likely a proxy for socioeconomic issues — which, obviously, there’s no short-term solution for that. It’s part of a broader problem that our country has with regard to extreme income disparities,” Polis said. this disaster, and the uneven effects of COVID-19 on different communities will perhaps be one of the most profound lessons,” Hunsaker-Ryan continued.

As of April 13, Colorado’s tally of COVID-19 cases reached nearly 7,700 across 56 counties, with nearly 1,500 hospitalized, about 38,700 people tested and 308 deaths. There have been 72 outbreaks at residential and nonhospital health care facilities.

The 5,188 cases with race and ethnicity data reported show the following counts: • White: 3,064 cases, 59.1 of total • Hispanic: 1,458 cases, 28.1% • Black: 363 cases, 7% • Asian: 116 cases, 2.2% • Multiple races: 96 cases, 1.9% • Other: 38 cases, 0.7% • Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander: 29 cases, 0.6% • American Indian or Alaskan natives: 24 cases, 0.5% As a percentage of the Colorado population in general, whites make up 67.8%, Hispanics 21.7%, blacks 3.9%, Asians 3.1%, American Indian or Alaskan natives 0.6%, and native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders 0.1%, according to 2018 U.S. Census Bureau data cited in the news release.

Those of multiple races make up 2.7%. Population data do not include the “other” category.

Some social distancing restrictions to continue for months, at least Until there’s a COVID-19 cure or vaccine, policies to limit spread of coronavirus will remain

When Gov. Jared Polis announced the extension of Colorado’s stay-athome order in a statewide television and radio address April 6, he took on a historical tone.

“This April will always be known as the lost month,” Polis told Coloradans, explaining the order would last through April 26.

But the lost time spent in a life altered by COVID-19 could add up to many months — or more than a year — depending on when a treatment or vaccine arrives.

“The challenge is, how do we create a sustainable way to live for the many months that the virus will be with us,” Polis said at an April 15 news conference. “The answer is not staying at home for many months. It’s not possible. It’s not possible economically — people need to support themselves, businesses need to exist, and it’s not possible psychologically. Humans are social animals.”

Other local business owners echoed Kinaschuk. Kelly Kaliszewski, the owner of Zoey’s Place, a specialty pet food store on Alamo Street, said a small grant from the city could make a world of difference.

Like Kinaschuck, Kaliszewski has applied for federal relief, but said the process was byzantine and confusing, and she hasn’t seen any money yet. With her curbside service only accounting for a fraction of her sales, she’s looking at laying off her only employee and wondering how she’ll make rent.

“I wish the city was in a position to offer us something,” she said. “If things continue the way they are, I couldn’t afford to stay in business.”

Several other Littleton businesses who spoke to Colorado Community Media said they had not yet received any federal funds.

The governor outlined how the state is working to balance the need to return to normalcy with the imperative to contain the coronavirus to a level that doesn’t exceed Colorado’s health care capacity, leading to more deaths.

Just as the state issued social distancing measures gradually — such as shutting down dine-in service at bars and restaurants, suspending ski area operations and ordering Coloradans to stay home except for essential reasons — the restrictions also will be lifted in pieces, Polis said. Social distancing is a public health term that means reducing face-to-face contact.

Unlike flipping a light switch, the transition will “look more like a light dimmer,” Polis added.

That process could last for “two months, three months, 10 months — however long it is before there’s a cure or vaccine,” Polis said.

It could take between 12 and 18 months until a vaccine is ready for mass use, according to national news outlets. A viable treatment could take months.

Ending Colorado’s stay-at-home order doesn’t mean restaurants will be full, Polis told reporters April 13. And even down the road, relying to some extent on working from home and staggering shifts to reduce contact will likely be the norm, Polis said April 15.

A ban on large gatherings will likely continue for months.

Pat Dunahay, co-president of the Littleon Business Chamber, said he’s not sold on the idea of small business grants, saying the city is facing its own financial hardships. Dunahay said his business, PDA Road Gear, received more than $150,000 in federal payroll protection money, and urged business owners to hold out.

“There are better places for them to spend their money than short-term grants,” Dunahay said. “That’s a Band-Aid, and I don’t think the city can afford it.”

With sales tax accounting for more than three-quarters of the city’s general fund, widespread business closures and reduced sales could mean a reduction of around 25% in city revenues in the next two quarters, said city finance director Tiffany Hooten.

“The hardest part is the unknown,” Hooten said. “Maybe 25% is too little or too much, but we won’t know until we get more data.”

Such a shortfall, anticipated to be several million dollars, will necessitate big cuts to the city budget, said

“Of course, there could be the need to reinstate measures, including the stay-at-home measures” if the virus’ spread is dire enough, Polis said. “But we all hope to avoid those types of draconian measures.”

Virus could plateau, for now It remains to be seen more clearly what trajectory the state is on in light of Coloradans staying at home. Within the next five days, that picture should become clearer, Polis said April 15. As of mid-April, additional COVID-19 cases per day — based on the start date of people’s illness — has shown a sharp decrease, from 394 added cases on March 30, to 45 added cases on April 14.

But it’s also unclear what the trajectory of cases will look like once the stay-at-home order is lifted. Public health officials are unsure of whether cases will start to increase at a higher rate than over the past couple weeks once the order ends, Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist, told reporters in a conference call.

To keep Coloradans safe while relaxing or lifting some social distancing policies, the state aims for a strategy of mass testing coupled with expanded contact tracing — keeping track of who has been exposed to COVID-19 — to appropriately isolate and quarantine people to control the spread of the virus.

Officials are working on building

Outbreaks continue As of April 15, Colorado’s tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 8,280 across 56 counties, with 1,636 hospitalized, 357 deaths and more than 40,500 people tested. There have been 83 outbreaks at residential and non-hospital health care facilities, such as senior homes.

More attention has been focused on those outbreaks in recent weeks. The vast majority of deaths from COVID-19 have occurred in people 70 or older, according to a presentation from the governor’s office.

Data show that Colorado’s social distancing has slowed the spread of COVID-19 and has delayed the peak — the time when the number of reported cases reaches its highest point — to some degree.

For a while in March, the number of COVID-19 cases in the state was doubling every 1 1/2 days. As of early April, cases were doubling roughly every six days, according to state officials.

The peak “could be anywhere from May until later in summer, and we hope to narrow that down,” Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist, told reporters on April 6.

“The magnitude of this is more than a reduction of programs and pens and pencils,” Relph said. “We’re talking about reducing services and staff. It’ll be very difficult and unpopular. Just to maintain our financial integrity, we have to do it.”

The city is working to address the problems facing small businesses, said Denise Stephens, the city’s economic development director.

City staff are coordinating with Englewood to make the most of an “economic enterprise zone” covering parts of both cities that could make businesses eligible for regional grant funding, and disseminating lists of businesses still open.

Stephens also said her office sent fliers touting the city to site selectors for corporate chains, and heard positive

responses from companies like Qdoba, Starbucks and Safeway.

Councilmember Carol Fey questioned what the city would not be able to do if it disbursed the urban renewal funds to local businesses, and how businesses would be selected to receive funds.

“We have business people in Littleton who frequently flaunt how rich they are and how successful their businesses are,” Fey said. “It wouldn’t make sense to give them more money when we have other needs. ” Fey said she wanted to ensure that businesses that received funds would be able to stay in business long-term to continue generating tax revenue for the city.

“If they’re going to die in two weeks, they’re not in good condition,” Fey said.

capacity for mass testing across the state, according to Scott Bookman, incident commander for the state health department. It’s unclear when mass testing will begin.

Deaths broken down by race The data also included deaths by race and ethnicity, showing that blacks were similarly overrepresented in the death count, making up 6.8%, or 17 deaths. Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders were overrepresented with 1.6%, or four deaths.

American Indians and native Alaskans were also overrepresented.

White Coloradans were slightly overrepresented as well.

Hispanics were underrepresented, as were Asians and those of mul-

tiple races.

The data included race and ethnicity data for 249 deaths, representing 81% of all reported COVID-19 deaths in Colorado as of April 13.

The deaths among cases reported with race and ethnicity show the following counts: • White: 172 deaths, 69.1% of total • Hispanic: 44 deaths, 17.7% • Black: 17 deaths, 6.8% • Asian: seven deaths, 2.8% • Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander: four deaths, 1.6% • Multiple races: three deaths, 1.2% • American Indian or Alaskan natives: two deaths, 0.8% No deaths were listed under the “other” category.

Some things change, but some never will

A

quarter could really get you something back then.

But if I had to choose — and back in 1985, I didn’t have a lot of quarters — I went with the newspaper. I was 11, so picking the paper over a FROM THE can of pop or some candy was perceived EDITOR as an odd choice by some, perhaps by many.

Where else was I going to get a written recap of yesterday’s games? How else could I learn the statistics of the players?

On Monday mornChris Rotar ings in my Florida hometown, especially in the fall, I’d walk to the local convenience store on my way to the bus stop, deposit a quar-

ter in the metal box outside and grab a copy of the local daily. I’d read several articles — usually about the Sunday football games — on the bus and save the rest for later.

The price of the paper went up a little over the years, but I kept reading.

I’d go on to write sports stories for that local daily and other papers, and instead of paying for the paper, they paid me. Eventually, I switched over to the news side and got hooked, copy editing stories about the 2000 presidential election and the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

In 2007, I left the humidity and landed a job with the forebears of the company that owns the paper you are reading now, working my way up the editor ranks.

By my count, I’ve been paid to work for newspapers for a quarter century.

Building winning relationships at home and at work

There’s a message in a bottle, and it’s mixed

n a Monday QUIET in March, Denver Mayor DESPERATION Michael Hancock briefly panicked the city by declaring liquor stores to be non-essential businesses. He declared they would have to close and remain closed until further notice, starting the Craig Marshall next day.

For the rest of that Monday lines were out the door at liquor stores around town. Twenty-five years ago, I would have needed a U-Haul.

I will miss being part of the CCM team as I navigate my way down an asof-yet-unknown path. We’ve done important work together. We’ve covered some of the saddest days in Denver metro area history, including school shootings in 2013 and 2019. We’ve also covered some of the brightest days — the graduations, state championship games and parades that make a community a community.

One thing is for certain: I’ll keep reading.

elationships at home are being strengthened during our time of quarantine and isolation as we get reacquainted with our family. Relationships are also being tested as we know that old saying, “Familiarity breeds contempt.”

Relationships at work are also being strengthened as people are stepping WINNING up their virtual WORDS communication game and figuring out how to work productively and positively while working from home. Yet some relationships at work are suffering as the remote working scenarios are not working out Michael Norton as planned.

If you have figured out how to deepen your relationships at home and at work, I encourage you to stay on your path, and maybe share with others some of your secrets. In this brief column, I hope to share a few insights when it comes to building winning relationships at home and at

When I hear of relationships that are struggling, whether it be at home or at work, one of the most common topics that comes out is a lack of communication. Are we over-communicating? Are we under-communicating? Have we gone totally silent and counting on grunts and groans to send our message? And when we are communicating, are we making sure that we are truly listening? Are we listening with the same passion that we want to be heard? Are we talking with our family and our remote associates?

My guidance has always been to look for the good when communicating. Too often we are looking for an opening to provide an answer or some kind of comeback. As long as we are waiting ...

O

ver the years, many of us have been told we need to have the “patience of Job.” Is now one of those times?

To some, it feels like we’re waiting (and waiting) for the social distancing to work. Or we think the wait for the toilet paper to be delivered is just too long. Even the 20 seconds to wash our hands may feel like forever. Or perhaps those who have contracted this - beastly coronavirus GUEST are waiting far too COLUMN long for it to leave.

No matter what we’re waiting for, our time doesn’t need to be wasted. It can be used, ritualized, even treasured, as a deeply thoughtful time in history both personally and collectively. Linda Newell As some people grow more impatient, and perhaps more fearful, I entreat us to raise our hands in the air, maybe scream, and go along for the ride if we can.

As long as we’re on this adventure together, we might as well use this time for making meaning out of it.

Sometimes, asking questions can help us make sense out of difficult situations.

For instance, societally, what innovation can come out of this crisis?

As Plato said years ago, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Those of us who have had doctors’ appointments lately have experienced the truth of that. Within only a few weeks, most of our non-urgent medical visits are now conducted through telehealth. This emerging technology and institutional processes were changed within days in order to meet our ongoing healthcare needs safely. What else might be sparked right now as we see essential needs within the context of a pandemic?

This is also a time we can acknowledge the privileges we have of a home with internet, groceries in the kitchen, and TP on the shelf (for now). What might we do not only now, but in the future, for those of us less fortunate? What do others need that I might be able to give or grow?

Personally, who will we be on the other side of this coronavirus?

What is the reason why we are alive at this time? We may never get this time back — while we are forced to isolate and be with our own thoughts for weeks at a time.

We can either stew in our collective or personal dysfunctions or we can just stop. Stop and pause. Stop and listen. Allow ourselves to really feel what’s going on — inside us and in the world. What is this moment telling us? Maybe I’m supposed to change careers, spend more time with my partner, learn new skills, or restore my faith in myself or the community. Perhaps now is the time to be reading, journaling, or meditating for deeper reflection.

But we need to have patience here as well and understand that with any change there is loss, and thus, we need mourning. We will feel grief about the old ways, the old me, or the relatives we’ve lost in the COVID-19 times. And we mustn’t rush it, but rather honor, respect, and feel it. Only then, will it not get hold of us and linger in our bodies.

Yes, we may need to wait for the “flattening of the curve,” but we don’t have to wait in vain.

Richard Charles (Dick) Rozycki August 22, 1932 – April 15, 2020

Richard Charles (Dick) Rozycki passed away peacefully on April 15, 2020 in Centennial, Colorado at the age of 87 from complications of COVID-19. Dick was born on August 22, 1932 in North St. Paul, Minnesota to Vincent and Mary Louise (Swendner) Rozycki. He was a 1950 graduate of Cretin High School and a 1955 graduate of the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering.

He earned a Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Colorado in 1963.

Dick moved to Los Angeles, California in 1955 to begin his career as an Aeronautical Engineer with Lockheed. It was there that he met the love of his life, a nursing student and fellow Minnesotan named Barbara Mae Peterson, who survives him after 62 years of marriage. Dick and Barbara were married in Glendale, California on August 31, 1957. In 1960, Dick joined Martin Marietta Aerospace and the family built a home in Littleton, Colorado. They remained in the Littleton area for the rest of their lives, except for a two year stint in New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 1970s when Dick was assigned to support development of the external fuel tank for the first flights of the Space Shuttle. Dick retired from Martin Marietta (now Lockheed-Martin) in 1996 after 41 combined years of service. He enjoyed his long career in aerospace and the opportunities it afforded him, including contributing to the nation’s defense and to advancements in space travel, in addition to the opportunity to establish lifelong friendships with many of his work colleagues.

Together, Dick and Barbara raised five children, all of whom survive him: Richard Rozycki of Scottsdale, AZ; James Rozycki (Leslie) of Mandeville, LA; Michele Rozycki of Denver; Celeste Sumner (Matt) of Centennial; and Renee Rozycki (H. Vause) of Denver. In addition, Dick is survived by six grandchildren: Krista Delbuno (Justin); Bryan Rozycki; Isabella Sumner; Evelyn Sumner; Chloe Rozycki Vause and Sophie Rozycki Vause.

Dick is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including the family of James and Janet Peterson who were especially close. Dick was predeceased by his brother Lawrence Rozycki and his sister Marie Roy. An annual vacation trip was a highlight of growing up in the Rozycki family and usually involved a cross country road trip in a wood-trimmed Ford Country Squire station wagon to visit grandparents and cousins.

Spending time in the mountains, camping at the family land near Black Hawk and climbing fourteeners were all part of the regular family adventures. Dick, Barbara and their extended family continued to vacation together through the years, including trips to Sweden and Germany, and frequent visits to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. In recent years, when Dick and Barbara’s travels slowed down, the extended family has continued to gather in Colorado for holidays and special occasions.

Aside from spending time with his family, Dick’s passion was flying. He obtained his private pilot’s license as a member of the Golden Gopher Flying Club in his university days and flew small planes regularly for more than 50 years. Dick was a skilled aerobatic pilot and enjoyed nothing more than taking family and friends up for a loop, a barrel roll, or a hammerhead spin. To commemorate his 65th birthday, he and his three daughters shared the experience of a parachute jump.

Dick was a member of St Mary’s Church in Littleton for 34 years, where he served as a lector. In addition, he volunteered his time with neighborhood associations and Boy Scouts and was a lifelong donor to the Vitalant Blood Bank. To the end of his life, Dick was known to all for his kindness, gentle spirit and quick smile.

Dick’s family expresses their sincere gratitude to his caregivers at The Suites at Someren Glen and to others who have supported him in recent years.

Dick’s family gathered for a virtual memorial service on Sunday, April 19. A funeral Mass and interment will be scheduled at a future date. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider donating blood in Dick’s memory, or contributing to Life is Better Rescue, Inc. in Lakewood, Colorado.

Local runners navigate postponements, crowded trails amid COVID-19

n March, Lakewood High School cross-country and track coach Bryn Smetana was four months into training for her first Boston Marathon. She was following a training schedule planned out to the day and the mile, preparing for a race about a month away, when an announcement threw a wrench into her plans: Following the lead of numerous athletic events worldwide, the marathon would be postponed for five months.

“I was doing my longest runs and running every day, and now I have to in a sense start over,” Smetana said. “I recreated my entire plan.”

With the marathon rescheduled from April 20 to Sept. 14, Smetana’s focus has shifted from pushing herself to the limit to simply maintaining her fitness levels. And among fellow Colorado runners also waiting out the five-month marathon delay and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many have taken the same approach.

The Boston Marathon brings more than 30,000 runners from across the world to Boston each spring. This year, more than 300 individuals from the Denver area have plans to run the race, with entrants making a series of unexpected adjustments to ensure they can stay committed to an event that is now months away — and stay fit in a time when training requires more precautions than ever before.

Those precautions span the physical, such as learning to run with a mask on, to the social, as distancing guidelines require residents to stay at least six feet apart.

Focus on safety Arvada resident Brad Lindeberg said he often has run with groups like the Arvada Runners club, but since the pandemic hit, the group has canceled its weekly group runs, staying in touch over social media instead.

Thornton resident Veronica Reish said that while she used to complete longer training runs while her father biked beside her, she since has transitioned to running alone.

But even despite a commitment to running without training partners, social distancing can prove difficult along the Denver area’s crowded trail system, the runners said.

“I’ve done a couple of very early morning runs, but I’m trying to not go out because there are more people on the trails,” Reish said. “I’ve had to step back a little bit and do a lot more running on the treadmill at home.”

Others, like Rich Airey, a Denver resident and running coach, have turned to running on the streets to

“There’s hardly any traffic. I’m trying to run every street (in the city),” Airey said. “I started off with a square-mile perimeter of my house and I’m going from there. I check off the streets as I go.”

Another common challenge for local runners has been figuring out exactly how much to run, as they balance unusual amounts of free time with the fact that races won’t resume until the fall.

As a coach, Airey said he has seen two common trends among Colorado runners.

“Either people are completely losing all of their motivation and doing nothing, or they’re thinking, ‘I need to take advantage of this and do more,’” he said. “My advice would be just to continue what you’ve been doing and,

Lindeberg agreed, saying members of the running community have been encouraging one another not to push themselves too hard.

“When you train really hard, you compromise your immune system.

Now, it’s more of a focus on running for enjoyment and not doing as many miles,” he said. “We’ve collectively said, let’s just get our base mileage in and be ready to race when races start happening again.”

A positive spin For some, the rescheduling has come with silver linings. Littleton runner Callie Skokos, for instance, had plans to run the Boston Marathon April 20 and the London Marathon April 26.

With both rescheduled, for Sept. 14 and Oct. 4 respectively, she’ll now have a longer turnaround between the two

races, she said.

Aiming to raise money for Children’s Hospital Colorado through the race, she acknowledged the virus could have a negative impact on fundraising. “Especially with people being out of work, people are more focused on their day-to-day, instead of donations,” she said.

That said, “I hope through the summer, I’ll possibly be able to raise more,” she said.

Barb Hurtt, a University of Denver teaching assistant professor who lives in unincorporated Jefferson County, added that for runners who actually have more work during the pandemic, instead of more free time, the postponement has been a somewhat welcome break.

“My work obligations increased about 50%, so it’s kind of been a blessing that I’ve had less demand on my training,” she said. “And I’ll enjoy being able to train over the summer, in nicer weather — I can’t tell you how many days I spent on the treadmill in February.”

Many of the runners said they remain unsure whether the race will actually go forward as scheduled in September, or if the virus’s impacts will prompt the Boston Athletic Association to postpone the race again.

But if all goes as planned, Airey, Hurtt, Lindeberg, Reish, Skokos and Smetana all still plan to represent Colorado at the race later this year, with hopes that the changes could, ultimately, even improve their times Sept. 14.

“This has helped me strengthen my runs. It’s something I look forward to every day,” Smetana said. “I’m just grateful I’m still able to get fresh air.”

Residents kept at home by health order get creative to fill days

Castle Rock resident Jerry Powell says business owners have a greater responsibility for their community than do the residents who live there.

He says when you open a business, you’re obviously asking the community for support, but you can’t open up shop and expect it to be a one-way street — businesses have to provide something back.

woodshop gave back to the community when Castle Rock Police K-9 Officer Ronin died in February due to unforeseen health complications. Castle Rock Woodworks provided a handmade wooden plaque to the police department in honor of Ronin shortly after the dog’s death.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Powell has been bunkered at home, helping his three sons through online learning as all school buildings in the state are closed until at least April 30. As he has been stuck at home like many other Coloradans, Powell has been thinking of hands-on projects he can provide to the community to pass the time through Castle Rock Woodworks.

So far, Powell has provided more than 1,000 free kits to build birdhouses and planter boxes to families, senior

homes, nursing facilities and teachers.

“We tried to make it where kids got a hands-on project and parents got a break from (online schooling),” said Powell.

Castle Rock Woodworks made the birdhouse kits educational by providing pamphlets with the kits about Colorado birds, links to educational resources and information about where to place the birdhouses. Powell said the birdhouses take around 15 minutes to build and can be constructed by using common household supplies such as glue.

The planter boxes are similar to the birdhouses in that they are easy to build and include educational components, such as information about wildflowers in the state.

Castle Rock Woodworks is planning on releasing new projects each week until mid-May, Powell said. The kits are available to everybody throughout the Denver metro area.

“We support all those that are trying to navigate through this weirdness.

“We will continue to do what we can to contribute until things find a new normal.”

Each weekend, some neighborhood residents will host a brunch together with different themes while keeping at least six feet distant from each other, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

During the weekend of April 4, the brunch was cowboy-themed. Every participant sat outside their porches, drank out of tin cups and dressed like a cowboy.

The neighborhood has also been playing Cards Against Humanity with each other through Zoom, a video communications service.

“It keeps everyone hopeful, and it keeps everyone social so that we can get through these next four weeks and hopefully come out of it okay,” said Myers.

Hanging out virtually Before the pandemic, Denver resident Landan Taylor would typically play disc golf or meet up with his brother after work.

But now that Colorado is under a stay-at-home order, Taylor has turned to another way to entertain himself while still socializing — video games.

Taylor has been playing video games regularly with his friends while talking to them through a microphone.

“As someone who likes to socialize, it is a good way to feel like I am hanging out with people and getting that

human experience,” said Taylor.

Denver resident Camila Plana is staying connected with her friends through virtual happy hours on Zoom.

Her virtual happy hours with her friends have included wine tastings and have also entailed her friend group taking turns giving presentations on different topics. One of Plana’s friends gave a presentation on her past relationships. “(The presentations) are more personal, but they are educational too,” said Plana. She said one of her other friends gave a presentation on basic Spanish while another one presented basic American Sign Language.

“It is really important for us to reach out and stay in communication with our friends and family we would normally stay in contact with,” she added.

Eric Nevins, who grew up in Highlands Ranch but now lives in Kansas City, Missouri, said he and his coworkers have been setting up virtual coffee meetings on Monday mornings to try to keep life as normal as possible. Nevins works as a mechanical engineer for Burns & McDonnell, an engineering, architecture, construction, environmental and consulting solutions firm based in Kansas City.

“I’m a pretty face-to-face, socialoriented person. I miss interacting with people a lot,” said Nevins. “As far as getting coffee with those guys, it is nice, because you’re not being professional at work every time. It gives you a time to stay social. That is the most important part — to not feel like I am isolated.”

The application deadline for the 2020 AARP Community Challenge grant program has been extended until May 15.

In its fourth year, the grant funds “quick-action” projects that spark change across the country, according to a news release. The program is part of AARP’s nationwide work on Livable Communities. Grants can range from several hundred dollars for small, short-term activities to several thousand, or tens of thousands for larger projects.

“We are thrilled to bring this grant opportunity back to Colorado in 2020 and we encourage all eligible organizations to apply,” Bob Murphy, AARP Colorado state director, said in the release. “We’ve seen tangible results from the AARP Community Challenge grant program supporting communities in Colorado as they make quick changes and inspire long-term progress.”

The AARP Community Challenge is open to 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and 501(c) (6) nonprofits and government entities. Other types of organizations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

AARP will prioritize projects with permanent or temporary solutions that aim to achieve one or more of the fol-

I would go to all of her games at Cherry Creek when I was in elementary school. I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to be like her. Most people on the team didn’t know we were cousins but the minute we step on the field we’re really not like family. She is my coach and I do what she says.

South Suburban golf courses reopen The golf courses managed by the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District reopened April 18, with safeguards in place to provide a low-risk outdoor activity for area residents, according to the district.

South Suburban has worked to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and align the operations of its golf courses to mirror the recommendations of public health orders, according to a news release. All patrons will be required to adhere to and respect the rules and safeguards the district will put in place, the release said.

Players must not go to a golf course if they have symptoms of COVID-19, or if they have been in contact with anyone who is ill or might have symptoms of the virus, especially if someone has tested positive, the release said. Additionally, players must practice good social distancing protocols and hygiene and stay at least 6 feet apart in the parking lot, around the clubhouse and on the golf course.

The release said players are asked not to touch common surfaces, shake hands or gather in groups. They must comply with proper distancing and sanitizer use and are strongly encouraged to wear a mask covering their nose and mouth while at the course, the release said. All practice areas, including the driving range, putting green and chipping areas are closed to eliminate the opportunity to gather.

Frequent cleaning/sanitizing of equipment and common areas around the clubhouse, including restrooms, doors and handrails will be completed.

Additionally, clubhouse and on-course restrooms will be open and are being disinfected. The men’s locker room at Lone Tree Golf Course will be closed.

Multiple touch points have been eliminated, including bunker rakes, ball washers, water coolers and water buckets. Food and beverages will be

and associates to be heard, we start building winning relationships. Communication is so very important as it is one of the primary ways that we share information and feelings.

Gratitude is next on the list, as it’s been said that gratitude is one of the strongest human emotions. Showing gratitude lets those around us know just how important they are to us and how much we truly appreciate them. We can communicate gratitude in so many ways; saying please and thank you; providing recognition of a job well done; letting our loved ones know how much we love them; doing something for others that they are fully capable of doing for themselves, just to show them we care about them.

We discussed communication and gratitude, now let’s add one more for today, and that is love. Not just the romantic kind of love, but love and kindness for those in our homes and who we work with. Love and respect for all the people making sure we can still get food and other essentials.

Love and awe for the people working so hard in health care and on the front lines.

Unconditional love and unconditional forgiveness for anyone who may have offended us or hurt us. Replace any feelings of anger or blame about this virus and the economy with the feelings of love, kindness, respect, gratitude, forgiveness, and hope. Borrowing from the Bible and 1st Corinthians 13:13, “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

When we take the time to really communicate, find ways to show our gratitude and appreciation, and learn to love on our families, friends, loved ones, coworkers, customers, and partners, we will have an awesome foundation for building winning relationships at home and at work.

Necessity won every time.

Luck? I’m lucky to be alive.

I’ve thought about it and I think about it every time I read about someone like Amy Winehouse.

Like her or not, that girl could sing.

If I had checked out 25 years ago, I wouldn’t be sitting here doing something I love, writing, with someone I love nearby.

I’m not about to tell anyone to quit drinking, especially right now. The illusion of alcohol’s benefits might be too great. I just hope anyone who has relapsed makes it to the other side of this alive.
