Laura Fusco, of Littleton, said her family is proud to be able to take care of their community by staying home and wearing their masks when they take walks in the neighborhood.

“This is a great opportunity to teach kids about caring for our community and teaching and resiliency and creativity,” Laura Fusco said. “We are blessed to be able to stay home. I believe we will

come out of this stronger!”

The family includes Laura and Justin Fusco and their children Jules, 8, and Holden, 7. The Fuscos have lived in Littleton for 10 years, and mom and the kids are Colorado natives.

Although the kids are enrolled in first and third grades at Bradford K8, they now attend “Quarantine School,” their mom said.

The Fuscos bought their masks from one of their neighbors, who made more

than 100 masks with the help of her three school-aged kids. Laura Fusco said she bought them to support the supplies and effort of her neighbor, and to show goodwill.

To stay occupied during the stay-athome period, the family hangs out in the backyard, playing Pie Face, throwing water balloons, catching bugs, grilling, playing catch, drawing with chalk and being grateful for the nice weather.

Together in isolation: How LPS is teaching under quarantine Educators, students adjust to online schooling as classrooms are closed

Online learning is going pretty well so far, said Jared Ewy, the dad of students ages 6, 10 and 12.

“It’s kind of cool to be dropped into your kids’ lives and see how they do in school,” Ewy said. “I’m getting a better sense of where they’re at on skills, and what I can help with.”

The new framework is bringing about an “erosion of pretensions and conventions,” Ewy said.

“The teachers are finding themselves and loosening up more,” Ewy said. “My kindergartner’s teacher is raising baby chicks and giving us updates. They’re finding new ways to teach. My only concern is wondering whether my kids will have the mental wherewithal to sit still in a classroom for seven hours a day again after this.”

At the front of the line on April 6, Beth Best, head of the Littleton Public Schools Foundation, signed out the Chromebooks, sending the district’s youngsters back home with the tools to stay connected in a time of isolation.

With classroom learning canceled for the rest of the school year and the district switching to an all-online curriculum in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chromebooks are vital for families without one to devote to schoolwork, but even families with extra computers find them useful.

“They’re pre-loaded with all the right software, and they’ve got content controls,” said Best from behind a face mask. “It’s a lot easier than commandeering the family computer.”

All told, the district passed out more than 3,000 of the laptops to kids in the younger grades, Best said. Kids in upper grades already had school-issued laptops.

The district also passed out nearly 50 wifi hotspots, paid for by the foundation, to families who don’t have internet connections at home.

“People are being so graceful and kind,” Best said. “Kids need these computers to learn, but we’re focused on mental health, too. They need to see their friends and teachers.”

LPS students last sat in a classroom on March 13, before spring break began a week early as efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19 ramped up.

Originally scheduled to return by the beginning of April, the closure was later extended until April 30.

Then, on April 3, the other shoe dropped: LPS schools would stay closed for the rest of the school year, as would most of the state’s districts.

DAVID GILBERT In place of classroom learning, the district has plunged headlong into online curricula, scurrying to meet the needs of kids from kindergarten through senior year.

“It was pretty overwhelming at first,” said LPS Superintendent Brian Ewert. “We’ve never been put in a situation like this, but the collaboration we’ve seen has been amazing.”

The tricky part: making sure all kids have equal access. In a classroom, all kids are sharing the same space, Ewert said, but learning from home can exacerbate differences between learning environments.

“Some kids are sitting in their own rooms on their own computers, and some are crowded at a kitchen table with everyone else in the family,” Ewert said. “Not every home is conducive to online learning.”

‘Beautiful in a hard time’ Many students’ home lives are in turmoil, said Amy Lengyel, an English language development teacher at Centennial Academy, an elementary school.

Some parents are balancing suddenly working from home and overseeing their kids’ education. Some parents work service-sector jobs that are considered essential, forcing them to leave kids at home or scramble for child care. Some parents have been laid off, and are struggling with food insecurity.

“At the same time, we’re seeing the community step up,” Lengyel said.

Lengyel, other parents and teachers have personally delivered laptops, school supplies and groceries to students’ homes.

“I’m touched by how willing and open parents are with each other,” Lengyel said. “Everyone is offering to help, and everyone has something to offer, even if it’s just an encouraging word. It’s beautiful in a hard time.”

Lessons, especially for little kids, are light-touch. While most grades start the day with Google Hangouts videoconference meetings, the youngest grades are given lists of activities to prevent youngsters from staring at screens all day. Even high-school grades seldom exceed a few hours of

‘Trying to stay positive’ For older kids with robust social lives and activity-filled schedules, however, the new paradigm is something of a letdown.

Kelsey Weiser, a senior at Heritage High School, said she was looking forward to this semester for years.

“You build it up in your head,” said Weiser, 17. “Prom, graduation, all the crazy stuff you do with your friends.

It’s all been taken away.”

Now, though, prom is canceled, and Weiser’s red prom dress sits unused in a box beneath her desk. She isn’t getting her hopes that graduation could be rescheduled for summer. A lifelong soccer player, she won’t get the chance to make up for last year’s playoff loss, or to celebrate at the team’s senior night.

“It’s a disappointment, but there’s nothing I can do about it,” Weiser said.

She’s trying to make the most of quarantine. In addition to about three hours a day of schoolwork, she’s reading, painting and working out. She’s also looking forward to this fall, when she starts classes at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

“I’m trying to stay positive,” she said. “People are sick and dying. I haven’t lost anyone. I can’t dwell on the bad. After all, we’re part of history. We’ll be the graduating class that never graduated.”

COVID-19 kills at least four Libby Bortz residents

At least four residents have died of COVID-19 at Littleton’s Libby Bortz Assisted Living home, according to the Tri-County Health Department.

Another resident from the facility died before a test could be conducted, but showed symptoms and was exposed to confirmed cases, said Ashley Richter, the department’s manager of epidemiology. The death is classified as a “probable case,” Richter said.

The deaths were first reported by the Colorado Sun. All residents were in their 80s and 90s, and all died in the hospital, according to an email from Kim DeCero, a spokeswoman for South Metro Housing Options, which owns the 115-apartment facility at 5844 S. Curtice St. Four more residents and one staff member have tested positive for the virus, DeCero said.

The facility is closed to visitors in efforts to slow the spread of the virus, said DeCero, who declined a phone interview. Further, group activities have been postponed, meals are delivered to residents’ apartments, residents’ temperatures are checked twice a day and staff are being moni-

tored for symptoms.

The facility is being regularly disinfected, she said, and residents have been given tablet computers to video chat with relatives.

DeCero said the facility is “working closely with local health officials to ensure we have all the protective gear our staff needs, such as N95 masks, protective eye wear, gloves, gowns, and shoe covers, and that we are following all guidelines and protocols.”

Senior living facilities are especially prone to deadly outbreaks of COVID-19, said Richter, the epidemiologist.

“Elderly people are more likely to have a more severe course of illness, and more likely to have a fatal outcome,” Richter said. “When you get a setting where elderly individuals, often with underlying medical conditions, are living in a confined area, it’s the perfect storm.”

DeCero said South Metro Housing Options is doing everything it can to combat the outbreak.

“Our dedicated staff continues their valiant efforts around the clock to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of our beloved residents,” DeCero said. “We remain persistent in our crusade against COVID-19 within our community.”

All Arapahoe County facilities are closed to the public until further notice to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

Absentee ballots recommended STAFF REPORT

The number of polling places for the South Suburban Park and Recreation District’s May 5 regular district election has been reduced to one.

The state mandate that closes South Suburban facilities, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, means that Goodson Recreation Center will be the only polling place for the election.

Instead of voting in person, South Suburban recommends that voters apply for an absentee ballot before the April 28 deadline.

South Suburban will begin mailing absentee ballots to those on the permanent absentee voter list the week of April 6. The only absentee ballot box drop loca-

tion is outside of Goodson Recreation Center, 6315 S. University Blvd., Centennial. The drop box will be available 24/7, until 7 p.m. on Election Day. Voters can also mail ballots to the designated election official at the South Suburban Park and Recreation District Administration Offices, 6631 S. University Blvd., Centennial, CO 80121.

South Suburban facing cuts as shutdowns drag on Staff furloughed without pay; district burning through reserve funds

South Suburban Parks and Recreation is facing an uncertain future as COVID-19 shutdowns drag on.

South Suburban, which runs a vast array of indoor and outdoor recreational facilities across the south Denver metro area, shut down the vast majority of its facilities, and all clubs, sports and activities on March 17. The district’s parks and trails remain open, some teeming with people as shutdowns eliminate most other recreational activities.

The district is losing about $750,000 in revenue every week its facilities are closed, said Executive Director Rob Hanna.

The district has inHanna definitely furloughed nearly all of its 1,400 part-time employees, Hanna said, and about half of its 241 full-time employees. The remaining skeleton crew is made up of workers deemed essential who handle facilities

maintenance and administration.

Part-timers are not being paid, according to an email Hanna sent to staff, and full-time employees are instructed to use up their vacation and sick days, then apply for unemployment.

“We had to stop the bleeding,” Hanna said. “Never did we imagine we’d face a scenario like this.”

At this rate, the district will burn through its reserve cash in 60 days, Hanna said, at which point it will be time to look at cuts.

The district has taken cost-saving measures, like melting one of the two sheets of ice at the district’s Ice Arena in Centennial.

It’s not yet clear where cuts would come from.

“There are a lot of what-if scenarios,” Hanna said. “We’re looking at every area of the organization.

The hard part is, nobody knows how long this will go on.”

There are other snags. Local city and county governments are likely to see huge drops in sales tax revenue, putting cost-sharing efforts on district improvements in peril.

If bans on gatherings continue into the summer, the district may not be able to host concerts at The Hudson Gardens, meaning it wouldn’t qualify for $400,000 in funding from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District.

Gov. Jared Polis issued a statewide stay-at-home order on March 26, and he recently extended the order — which had been scheduled to expire April 11 — to April 26.

Planned replacements of the Littleton Tennis Center in west Littleton and the Sports Dome at the Family Sports Center in Centennial could be pushed back.

The district is working on applying for federal relief, but federal programs are continuously evolving and staff are trying to figure out how much the district might qualify for, Hanna said.

The 2008 recession hit the district hard, Hanna said, causing years of deferred maintenance that the district has only begun to catch up with in recent years.

Hanna said he doesn’t expect this shutdown or the possibility of an economic recession to have as severe an impact on the district.

“The last recession was based on deeper economic issues,” Hanna said. “If we get on top of this thing, if we bend the curve or we get a vaccine, we could bounce back quicker.”

Hanna said he’s not sleeping much lately.

“If a tornado hit Goodson Rec Center, I’d know how long it would take to get things back to normal,” he said. “With this, we just don’t know.”

City begins cutting budget in response to COVID-19 shutdowns Financial impact will emerge over months; city manager ready to make ‘unpopular’ decisions

The City of Littleton is beginning the process of cutting the city budget in response to fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, City Manager Mark Relph told city council.

Relph announced cuts totaling $1.1 million from the city budget at the April 7 council meeting, the first held virtually, with councilmembers appearing by videoconferencing software from their homes.

The cuts come from a combination of a hiring freeze, a suspension of training, education and tuition reimbursement for city staff, a hold on professional and consulting projects, a postponement of capital construction projects, and reductions in parts, supplies, printing and maintenance.

The financial impact of the COVID-19 shutdowns will begin to emerge by the end of April as March sales tax figures roll in, Relph said, and will continue in following months.

“What seems like yesterday, we were talking about our community vision,

Littleton City Council casts a vote in its first fully virtual meeting on April 7. and ambitious plans to implement that vision,” Relph said. “Our future was bright and exciting. Now much of that is in question.”

Littleton’s general fund, which funds most city operations, is overwhelmingly drawn from sales tax, Relph said, and with many of the city’s businesses closed or doing extremely limited business, the city

projects a 25% drop in sales tax revenue this year.

Coming months will likely necessitate deeper cuts to the city’s services and operations, Relph said.

“The operational changes I’ll make will be necessary and in many cases unpopular,” Relph said.

Colorado businesses face warnings, adjustments Some stores, including Hobby Lobby, raise red flags amid COVID-19 restriction

A local bicycle shop seeing more demand. Record stores leaning on mail service just to survive. A large craft store chain defying the government and staying open amid the pandemic.

COVID-19 has drawn a line in the sand for businesses — critical vs. noncritical, as deemed by the state — and it’s a distinction that has cost thousands of jobs across Colorado as the state’s restrictions on which businesses can operate remain in place for at least the next few weeks.

“It’s been really tough, honestly. We had to let most of our staff go,” said Michael Baca, a manager at Black and Read book and music store in Arvada.

The shop temporarily closed a few days before the state ordered “noncritical” businesses to reduce their in-person workforce by 50% by March 24. Then came Colorado’s stay-at-home order, tightening the grip even further and effectively closing many noncritical businesses altogether.

The state recommends local public health agencies or local law enforcement first reach out to the business to seek voluntary compliance, according to a fact sheet by the Colorado Attorney General’s Office.

“We’ve actually seen a pretty big influx of — I don’t know if you’d call it ‘panic bicycle buying,’” laughed Brian Shuey, a manager at the shop, who guessed that the bump in demand might be the normal rush the store sees in spring amid tax returns.

Although the shop can stay open, it has taken steps to reduce the number of people inside at one time — the stay-at-home order requires business-

es to keep people at least 6 feet apart as much as possible.

Then there was Hobby Lobby, a craft store giant that stayed open in spite of the state’s order, arguing it provided “essential products” amid the pandemic in an April 3 statement. The company received a letter dated April 1 from the Colorado Attorney General’s Office demanding that it close.

“For the avoidance of doubt, and as you have been previously notified, Hobby Lobby is not a ‘critical business’ and is not otherwise exempt,” the letter says.

‘We’re hanging in there’ The staff at Black and Read is smaller than many other businesses that have been forced to close to the public, but the music shop is still feeling the impact.

“It’s been rough — we’re hanging in there,” said Baca, whose shop let go of about five employees and told them to file for unemployment assistance.

He hopes to bring them back when the economy starts to revive.

The employees still on board saw their hours cut, and some come to the shop to list items for sale online.

“We’ll ship to anyone we could,” said Baca, who uses platforms such as Amazon to keep sales afloat.

Under the state’s order, noncritical businesses are allowed to perform “minimum basic operations,” such as building and inventory maintenance, payroll and activities that facilitate

employees working from home, said Gary Sky, spokesman for Tri-County Health Department, which covers Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties.

Tri-County was seeking clarification from the state regarding noncritical businesses filling delivery orders, Sky said.

Record shops aren’t considered critical businesses under Colorado’s order, but if a business is closed to customers, it can still operate, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. At least one other record shop in the west Denver metro area had announced its plan to continue mail service.

“The orders cannot anticipate every circumstance, which is why the governor has stressed the importance of following the spirit of the order and not seeking loopholes,” the department said in a statement. “A single person working alone in a workspace that is closed to other people would not violate the order.”

Other stores of all kinds around the metro area have shut down for now, such as Forever Flowers and Gifts, a family-owned business in east Centennial along Smoky Hill Road.

“We are all healthy and safe as of the close of business on Wednesday, March 25,” a voicemail recording for the business said. “We sincerely have the best wishes for the health, safety and prosperity of all our customers.

Warnings, voluntary compliance Hobby Lobby is one of the most high-profile businesses to defy stay-at-home orders, and the letter it received from the state Attorney General’s Office April 1 directed all of the company’s Colorado locations to immediately close.

At the Hobby Lobby in Parker on

April 1, a co-manager said the store was open but that by the next day it was to close based on instructions from his superior.

The store had not received complaints from employees about staying open, and it had not been contacted by authorities about the stay-at-home order, said the co-manager, Oscar, who did not feel comfortable giving a last name.

The company said in an April 3 news release: “We know our customers relied on us to provide essential products, including materials to make personal protective equipment, such as face masks, educational supplies for the countless parents who are now educating their children from home, and the thousands of small arts and crafts businesses who rely on us for supplies to make their products.”

The company announced it was temporarily closing all of its locations effective the night of April 3.

The Colorado Attorney General’s Office did not comment on where

else it has seen reports of noncritical businesses requiring employees to come to work.

“We are unable to discuss specific companies or details about the types of reports we are receiving at this time. We are working with the state health department, local agencies, and the governor’s office to review reports, determine which post the greatest risk to public health and safety and (on) appropriate enforcement action,” said Lawrence Pacheco, spokesman for the office.

Tri-County Health Department has resolved many reports of violations through education and voluntary compliance, according to Sky. “We have received 244 complaints, and most are able to be resolved over the phone,” Sky said April 3. “We have issued two formal warnings to businesses who have failed to come into compliance with the public health order.”

That includes one bar or restaurant and one retail facility.

Tri-County Health Department has not heard such complaints regarding health care facilities, said Gary Sky, department spokesman.

The statewide stay-at-home order “expressly prohibits anyone who is sick from working, even for a critical business like a health care facility,” Sky said.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment also has not received such complaints, according to Ian Dickson, a spokesman for the department.

“If someone did experience one of those scenarios, they should first contact their local public health agency and then, if necessary, file a report with the (state) Attorney General’s Office at covid19@coag.gov,” Dickson said.

Fertilizer: arch enemy of waterways.

Attorney general warns about COVID-19 relief check scammers Phil Weiser issues consumer advisory saying that anyone who claims to be able to send money now is likely a scammer STAFF REPORT

Scammers are using the checks the federal government is scheduled to send as part of the coronavirus stimulus package to encourage Coloradans to share bank account numbers or other sensitive personal information, according to a news release issued March 30 by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser.

“As Congress worked to complete the first COVID-19 economic stimulus package, scammers were already working to deceive Coloradans and take advantage of those eagerly awaiting federal relief,” Weiser said in a news release. “It’s important to remember that the federal government hasn’t issued a single stimulus check yet, and will not call you on the phone to ask for sensitive personal information. Anyone who calls claiming to be able to send money now — and asks for your personal information — is a scammer.”

Following are some ways to protect

yourself from government check scams: * Don’t respond to texts and emails about checks from the government.

Anyone who tells you they can get you the money now is a scammer. * Don’t click on links from sources you don’t know. They could download viruses onto your computer or device. * The government will not ask you to pay anything up front to get this money. * The government will not call to ask for your Social Security number, bank account, or credit card number.

Most Americans will receive up to $1,200 per person in coming weeks, as part of a historic $2 trillion stimulus package that was signed March 27.

Parents will receive up to $500 for each child under age 17.

Those eligible for a payment will receive a payment directly from the IRS. The IRS specifies on its website that no sign-up is required, and there is no need to call. The agency will post additional information, when it’s available, at www.irs.gov/coronavirus.

Littleton’s business community is “reeling,” Relph said, adding that city staff members stand ready to help businesses navigate the process of applying for federal relief.

Residents who would like to help can donate a $10 meal from the Farm House Restaurant to local health-care workers. Each month, Breckenridge Brewery will match up to 250 donations to meet its goal of at least 500 meals per month to local hospital workers.

District attorney addresses concerns about stay-at-home order

Brauchler says legitimate public health, law enforcement officials will not demand COVID-19 paperwork STAFF REPORT

Legitimate public health and law enforcement officials will not ask for COVID-19 related paperwork, according to a news release from 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Reports about police impersonators and other concerns about the stay-at-home order have increased concerns and questions from residents, the release said.

While civil and criminal penalties do exist for violating public health

orders, the primary goal of law enforcement is to encourage voluntary compliance. Law enforcement and public health officials are tasked with investigating possible violations of the orders, but if they question you, you do not need to provide paperwork or documentation that your travel is essential, according to the release. There are no checkpoints because of COVID-19.

In one case, the release said, a woman told Aurora police she was stopped by an impersonator questioning her reason for travel March 25 near East Sixth Avenue and Havana Street. She was on her way home from her job at an essential business just after midnight.

Police investigated her claim.

When none of the nearby surveillance cameras corroborated her story, the woman confessed to police

she had made it up, according to the release. She was worried that her employer was not issuing “travel papers� and wanted to use the fabricated incident to pressure her employer.

Some of the other Colorado incidents reported as impersonators have also turned out to be fabrications or misunderstandings, the release said. Residents with concerns that a stop is not bona fide are asked to call 911 immediately from a safe place.

While peace officer impersonators are rare, they do exist. The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has charged six people with that crime over the last three years, the release stated. An impersonation case was charged in early April in Douglas County. The victim in that case reported that the defendant,

a self-described bounty hunter in a car with flashing lights, pulled him over. This does not appear to be related to COVID-19 in any way, but that does not make it any less concerning. “These are trying times on many levels for all of us. We need to work together to encourage everyone to follow the public health orders that are in effect,� District Attorney George Brauchler said in the news release. “We need to — and we will — support our law enforcement officers in this time. Making false reports of crimes is lying, wastes resources and weakens our system.

Pretending to be law enforcement and usurping their authority for any purpose is an attack on the legitimacy of our system. Neither will be tolerated in our community.�

Some essential workers get raises, boosts in benefits Companies praise those who have kept businesses running

Many grocery and home improvement workers are being rewarded by their companies for enduring several weeks of chaotic shopping and for putting themselves at risk to provide important goods and services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some essential businesses are giving workers enhanced benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic, from one-time bonuses to free lunch during shifts.

What is deemed essential versus nonessential has been somewhat controversial. Certain franchise locations in Colorado like Hobby Lobby and Michael’s stayed open as long as possible before being forced to shut down under threat of citation from state authorities.

Grocery stores, feed stores and hardware stores are considered essential.

Essential businesses, as defined by the state, are businesses that provide critical infrastructure, manufacturing, retail or other services, health care operations, construction or necessities to those in need.

Many stores have implemented plexiglass partitions at check lanes,

Home Depot has seen a surge in activity since the start of stay-at-home orders, according to a release from the company. Home Depot announced April 1 it has added 80 hours of paid time off for all full-time hourly workers, 40 for part-time, to be used any time during 2020 or paid out if not used. Full-time workers age 65 of older have been given 160 hours of paid time off, 80 for part-time. All full-time employees will be given bonuses of $100 per week and $50 per week for part-time.

Albertson’s Companies, which owns Safeway and Albertson’s supermarkets, announced April 7 it has joined

the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union in a joint effort to seek a temporary designation of “extended first responders” or “emergency personnel” for supermarket employees for priority in things like COVID-19 testing or access to personal protection equipment during the outbreak.

Kroger, which owns King Soopers, is offering companywide paid sick leave, enhanced benefits for child care and mental health services, a benefit giving some hourly workers access to their paychecks faster, and companywide pay raises of $2 above base rate.

“Kroger’s most urgent priority is to provide a safe environment for associates and customers, with open

stores, comprehensive digital solutions and an efficiently operating supply chain, so that our communities have access to fresh, affordable food and essentials,” said Rodney McMullen, Kroger’s chairman and CEO, in an April 1 release. “We are so proud of our dedicated associates who are on the front lines serving our customers when they need us most. A huge thank you to all of our associates, whose efforts are nothing short of heroic.”

Murdoch’s in Parker, a feed and supply chain, has been giving employees free lunch, bought from local restaurants, during their shifts. At-risk employees have been given paid time off and all employees received small bonuses.

Lowe’s announced in an April 2 release the company is providing a $2 an hour wage increase for all employees for the month of April. The company is also providing employees with personal protective equipment.

“We are continually working on ways to protect and support our associates and our customers during this time when we are all adjusting how we work and live,” said Marvin Ellison, Lowe’s president and CEO in the release. “I’m announcing these new operational changes as we continue to keep the health and well-being of our associates and customers top of mind, especially as they look to us now more than ever for essential products, services and support.”

Movies make sense in a world that doesn’t

So am I: QUIET mostly comedies, mysteries, and, DESPERATION believe it or not, love stories.

Yes, I am a bread crumb-encrusted old frog, but deep down (very deep) I am a romantic, bread crumb-encrusted old frog, with some love story suggestions.

Craig Marshall I can’t, however, recommend “Love Smith Story,” the 1970 movie based on Erich Segal’s book. Segal was a Harvard, Yale, and Princeton

“The Best Years of Our Lives” includes an unforgettable scene of a B-17 and B-25 graveyard.

Look for: armless Homer (Harold Russell) asks Butch (Hoagy Carmichael) if he knows “Lazy River,” when Butch is playing piano in his Boone City bar.

Carmichael composed “Lazy River.”

Boone City is based on Cincinnati.

“Random Harvest” isn’t on my list, nor is “Wuthering Heights,” but both of them get votes from other film critics.

Is it possible to fall in love with a painting of a woman? Ask Dana Andrews who bids on a presumed dead woman’s portrait in “Laura,” also starring Gene Tierney.

Taking the presumed dead infatuation further, I recommend Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo.” James Stewart

Everyone knows about “Casablanca,” so I will skip it. The same goes for “When Harry Met Sally” and “Titanic.”

How about some offbeat love stories?

Top of my list is “Harold and Maude,” starring Bud Cort, Ruth Gordon, and Cat Stevens’ songs.

At the time of filming, Gordon was 51 years older than Cort.

n last week’s column I made a recommendation to replace the word react with the word respond as sometimes we never just react, we either overreact and make things worse, or we underreact and don’t do enough. But when we respond, we tend to think a little more clearly and do exactly what is needed.

I have seen so many posts on social media where people pose the question, “When this quarantine is all over, what WINNING will be the first thing WORDS you do?” And I have seen some really funny replies, and some pretty scary replies. After enjoying a laugh, I started to think about the question again.

What will I do when this quarantine is all over?

Years from now people will be talking about this time that we are all going through. The novel coronavirus and its impact on our society, the economy, and sadly, the loss of life. They will also talk about how we as the people who lived through it responded. And right now, we are the authors of what people will say in the future. Other than maintaining social distancing, wearing masks, and washing our hands we really can’t control what is happening around us. But we can control what is happening within us and our homes.

A huge shout-out to the medical community and everyone on the front lines, and to each and every first responder out there, we appreciate you all so very much. We don’t call a first responder a first reactor, do we? No, we call them a first responder. When we are given medication that doesn’t agree with us, we typically say that we are having a negative reaction. However, when we are given a medication that helps us to feel better, we typically say that we are responding favorably.

Do you see the difference? We can choose to respond favorably.

When this is all over, people will not only talk about us years from now, they will be talking about us while

The ongoing economic impact of COVID-19

he coronavirus (COVID-19) is in full force. The pandemic has touched the entire world in one way or another. It does not appear that anyone can escape the threat of the virus or the economic impact at this point.

There are still many unknowns.

It appears inevitable that we are in, or near, an economic contraction as well as significant changes to the way FINANCIAL we will do business STRATEGIES going forward.

Investors stuck at home and faced with 24/7 market news are likely to have a fair amount of anxiety about the condition of their investments and their retirement.

While the news has stated many times this Patricia Kummer is “unprecedented,” I would challenge that every economic downturn has been called the same.

It is amazing that the stock market follows similar patterns of decline and recovery, regardless of the catalyst that caused the volatility in the first place. It is important to keep these macro cycles in mind and focus on the outcome and where you would want to be positioned then.

People often feel the need to do something when a market decline hits.

we are still in it and as soon as it is all over. They will see how we responded and how we handled ourselves during this crisis. Did we stress ourselves out, did we get angry and cranky, did we create bigger problems? Or did we find peace and patience, did we take full advantage of our time together with family, did we do what we could to help others and volunteer? Did we react or did we respond?

We live in a world where we share what is happening in our lives through social media. Access to yinformation is everywhere. Artificial intelligence picks up on what we look at while we are online. It picks up on trends and then fills our social media

This is a good time to remind investors that the stock market is often forward looking. The significant declines in the last few weeks could be the bell weather for expected bad economic news.

Now let’s look at all the positives that have occurred already. First the Federal Reserve was quick to cut interest rates aggressively. Next, we received the Family First Coronavirus feed with more of the same content.

So, if we are reacting and negatively ranting in our own posts, we will continue to see other negativity being posted. However, if we respond by looking at, and “liking” posts of a positive nature, we will continue to see uplifting content filling us with even greater hope and encouragement that we can share and pass along.

Yes, these are interesting times: When pollution has all but disappeared; major insurance carriers have waived co-pays; and drug companies are working nonstop for a nonprofit cure.

Hopefully we don’t let this opportunity escape without finding ways to improve our world. And when we do, you probably won’t need to worry about your portfolio.

Anne Laurette Fennell

May 30, 1946 – March 25, 2020 Annie Fennell’s style in life matched the words of a country-western song“humble and kind.” She died at the age of 73 as a result of complications from Alzheimer’s. During her four-year siege and the onset of dementia she endured the loss of a sense of time and place with what family and friends described as “grace and a resilient spirit, always with a smile on her face.”

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, James D. “Denny” Fennell of Denver, and three children, Lt. Col. David Fennell (Laura), currently at the Naval War College, Newport, R.I., and grandchildren Abram and Selah, daughter Jodi of California, and son Brian (Michelle) of Denver.

A son, William Carey, died in infancy in 1974. A brother, Tom (Connie) of Springfield, Illinois also survives.

Anne Laurette (“Annie”) Byerly grew up in Springfield, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in education. She followed an older sister to Colorado and began a teaching career. She first taught at Denver’s Franklin Elementary School. A period passed while she was raising her children. She went back to teaching at Littleton’s

Damon Runyon Elementary School, where she applied her gifts of patience and kindness to eager second graders for 16 years before retiring.

In Littleton, where the family resided for almost 40 years, she established a strong network of friends, and belonged to PEO, the Friends of the Library and Friends of the Museum groups, and Town Hall Arts Center, and volunteered at Western Welcome Week. She and Denny are long-time members of Grace Presbyterian Church. Her hobbies of reading and walking kept her busy in retirement. She loved baking Christmas cookies and a tradition was making pumpkin bread for neighbors.

Per Annie’s wishes, a memorial service will be conducted in July at Grace Presbyterian Church. Cremation has taken place, and inurnment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery, next to their son William.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Grace Presbyterian Church, 9720 South US85, Littleton, CO 80125, and the Anne Fennell Memorial Fund. The church will designate the funds for purchase of personal protective apparel for the staff at Children’s Hospital managing coronavirus issues.

Seniors, vulnerable can get resources, grocery delivery Change the Trend, others join forces to help during crisis

Englewood resident Adelmo Vallejos says he tries to not think about how he is suffering from kidney cancer, but sometimes he will wake up in the middle of the night from nightmares about his condition.

He says his immune system isn’t strong and for now, he can’t go to doctor appointments for his cancer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Vallejos is 71 and his age and condition place him at elevated risk of dying from the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says older adults and people of any age who have serious medical conditions may be at higher risk for bad outcomes from COVID-19.

“I have to risk my life to go out to the stores to get what I need. If you go over to the stores, there isn’t much you can get anyway because everything is gone,” said Vallejos.

Residents like Vallejos who are at risk to the worst of what COVID-19 can cause are the type of people Change the Trend and other churches and organizations are targeting for assistance. Change the Trend is a community coalition based in Englewood

The organization is part of Change the Trend’s effort to deliver groceries to vulnerable populations in Englewood, Littleton and Sheridan.

Churches and organizations that are part of Change the Trend like Wellspring Church, Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church, A Stronger Cord, Cafe180, Movement 5280, LoveINC, HAAT Force, The Sacred Grace and GraceFull Cafe, and other entities outside of Change the Trend like Mosaic Church, are working together to deliver groceries or to provide other

resources to those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The group is looking to assist seniors and residents with health problems in Englewood, Littleton and Sheridan.

“If the COVID-19 stay-at-home order continues, there is going to be an increased need to find those (vulnerable) people and protect them as the virus continues to spread,” said Englewood City Councilmember Joe Anderson.

He launched Change the Trend in 2017.

Colorado is under a stay-at-home order until at least April 11 to stop the spread of COVID-19. Gov. Jared Polis said that order will likely be extended.

“I think the real key to this is figuring out which neighbors need help and helping them directly. The Change the Trend effort is to catch the people that are falling through the cracks,” said Anderson.

The idea for the churches and organizations to help residents with groceries and other needs was born in the middle of March when the entities all met to talk about how to best adapt their services to vulnerable populations.

Movement 5280 Executive Director Tina Hayhurst said she knew there was a need to help out seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Outside of its efforts to deliver groceries and other needs for vulnerable populations, Movement 5280 assists at-risk and homeless young adults and other homeless residents. The organization provides meals, clothing, hygiene products, mentorship and more to the homeless.

“During this time, we have to think about the vulnerable, whether that is an older person who is afraid to get out, if that is someone who is lonely, those who have anxiety and the homeless,” said Hayhurst.

Turn your garden into a thriving success with help from the master gardeners at CSU Extension

n Colorado, there’s a program comprised of 2,500 master gardeners across all 64 counties that develop science-based research and information, making it where you don’t have to spend hours upon hours researching how to develop and be successful at growing a garden.

Through the Colorado State University (CSU) Extension program, certified experts do the research, planting and studies to help you be successful in growing any kind of plant no matter where you live in the state. The master gardeners are available by phone, email and in person (when home-based orders are not in place). These gardeners can diagnose problem soils, identify viruses and insect issues through photos and lab testing.

“When it comes to the Extension program, we like to say why Google it?” said John Murgel, the CSU extension program associate for horticulture in Douglas County. “A Google search provides crazy results that takes you all over the map.

With Extension, you get one-on-one interaction, fact sheets on everything local. It’s an awesome resource.”

All of the master gardeners with the Extension program are certified horticulturist. Through a variety of outlets, including blogs, they provide help to gardeners with watering, planting guidelines, understanding sunlight, Colorado’s crazy weather patterns and explain what the elevation here means to seeds you put into the soil.

Patti O’Neil, horticulturist and urban food systems coordinator for CSU Extension in Jefferson County, said they want gardens to thrive and want residents to know they are here to help at every stage of gardening from planning, planting, growing to tips on how to store food after the harvest.

“One of our biggest fears is that a resident starts a garden without assistance, they fail and never come back to it again,” she said. “We want gardeners to plant vegetables, flowers and everything. We are here to make any garden, whether it’s here on the front range or up in the mountains, succeed.”

O’Neil said when home-based rules are not in

place, the Jefferson County offices can provide inperson diagnosis of plant problems and test soil in the lab. Classes are also offered in most counties.

With soil, we stress that it’s the most important aspect of getting started,” O’Neil said. “You can’t always just dig in some dirt and be successful.

We test soil in labs and can provide guidance on nutrients needed to get you started.”

O’Neil said with 155 master gardeners available in Jefferson County alone, they are always on hand to answer questions, help diagnose and solve problems and provide information.

“Call us with any questions,” O’Neil said. “Don’t be afraid to asks a lot of questions. We want to help with all of it.”

Murgel said when it comes to weather and landscape, Colorado is diverse. The master gardeners with CSU Extension take into account all Colorado landscapes and provide fact sheets on what to plant and when to avoid frost, weather issues or what to consider in regards to altitude.

“We understand that now isn’t a good time to plant tomatoes or squash, you want to wait for the heat,” Murgel said. “But radish doesn’t always do as well when it’s overheated, which means now is the time to plant some of your vegetables. Our websites and master gardeners can provide all of that information that is local to the area residents live.”

The CSU Extension program was established

by Congress in 1914, authorizing land-grant universities to get research-based information out to the public. Besides landscape and gardening the certified experts provide free information in agriculture, 4-H development, animal health, drought conditions, renewable energy, natural resources and food safety and health.

“The CSU Extension’s gardening programs are a great community resource,” he said. “Gardening is an important activity for so many reasons. It connects us to our agricultural history and heritage, and the health benefits are important too. Being outside in the garden helps us both physically and mentally. It also teaches us how to grow our own food. A vegetable garden doesn’t have to be big.

The value of gardening goes beyond what grows in the ground

ardening is a great way to improve the community, beautify a yard or provide great-tasting fruits and vegetables. However, going beyond the roots, gardening has proven to be beneficial both mentally and physically.

Studies continue to show that gardening goes beyond the plants and provides true physical and mental health benefits.

John Murgel, a horticulturist with the Colorado State University Extension program in Douglas County, said for him, gardening provides connection to human history and human life.

“Gardening connects me to the outdoors, to the plants and wild birds and native bees that live in my neighborhood,” he said. “Depending on which plants I’m using at the moment, (gardening) can be everything from childhood memories from family heirloom plants or veggies to people in other ages and in other continents going back centuries or further. They give me deep perspective.”

On the physical side, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) says gardening is a great way to get exercise.

Gardening can decrease risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke,

depression, colon cancer and premature death.

Some of the top benefits of gardening include: A natural source of Vitamin D: Vitamin D increases calcium levels, which provides support for bones and the immune system. For older adults, increased Vitamin D can help improve serum levels.

South Suburban Parks and Recreation, due to Gov. Jared Polis’ stay-at-home order, has closed all playgrounds, golf courses, driving ranges and related golf facilities, tennis/pickleball courts, basketball courts and picnic areas.

If you think about a golf cart, most golfers drive to one ball, drive to the next ball and go hunt the golf ball. When they are alone they just go to their golf ball and hit it. It is an interesting time. You see a lot of people that haven’t walked in a while and they look tired.”

HOW MEDITATION CALMS THE BODY There are two main branches of the body’s autonomic nervous system, which regulates its unconscious functions, such as digestion and heart rate.

These branches are the sympathetic — the fight-orflight system — and the parasympathetic — the rest and digest system.

“Meditation helps us tap into the parasympathetic nervous system,” said Dr. Justin Ross, a psychologist at UCHealth’s Center for Integrative Medicine. “Think about the sympathetic system being the gas on a car and the parasympathetic system being the brake … you need to learn how to use the brake appropriately.”

By engaging the parasympathetic system, the body’s rhythms become more balanced. The heart rate slows and the sympathetic system no longer pushes stress chemicals — such as adrenaline — into the bloodstream. Meditation also decreases cortisol, the main hormone contributing to long-term stress.

“You’re going to feel a better sense of focus and calm and relaxation,” Ross said.

Practitioners offer guidance for launching a routine

hen Sean Thompson developed a stress-related ulcer in college in 1988, a psychology professor recommended he try one simple practice to find relief: meditation.

After trying out the professor’s tape of a guided meditation, Thompson made a life-altering discovery.

“What happened was it worked,” he said. “I started feeling more relaxed.”

Twenty-four years later, Thompson founded the Centered Path Buddhist meditation center in Parker. The center, which he describes as more of a study group than a religious organization, teaches folks of all backgrounds how to harness the power of meditation.

“The only people who it can’t help are those who aren’t willing to try,” said Thompson.

Many psychologists, including Dr. Justin Ross at UCHealth’s Center for Integrative Medicine, also recommend the practice to reduce stress.

“There are tens of thousands of published studies on this,” Ross said. “The research at this point is pretty extensive and comprehensive across a wide range of conditions and concerns.”

Mindfulness meditation can reduce stress, anxiety and depression and improve wellness and the ability to cope with disease, he said.

“We talk about meditation as being a core pillar of wellness for all of us,” Ross said.

Especially now, as many people’s mental health is strained by the anxieties and uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, meditation can help everyone find a sense of peace, he said.

“When something gets taken away from you, that causes grief,” she said.

“People are trying to function in this new way of being, and that causes anxiety ... for that it would be wonderful to use these techniques to ground yourself every day.”

Dohrmann, Ross and Thompson agree that meditation can be extremely beneficial for those finding themselves frequently worried.

When anxious, “you’re like a bag in a windstorm,” Dohrmann said. “You’re not very rational, you can’t think clearly. Grounding yourself brings you back to (earth).”

Steps to meditation While meditation can be practiced anywhere, it’s best to find a quiet place to sit or lie down, Dohrmann said.

“Ideally you’re sitting comfortably on a cushion or against a wall or in a chair — with feet on the ground, not hanging,” she said. “And then just kind of rest your hands where they feel comfortable.”

“Being body-aware and breath-aware can really be taught even to a 1-year-old,” she said.

For children this age, Dohrmann recommends parents hold the child in front of them and take deep, calming breaths, she said.

“They will mirror that and it will help them calm down,” she said.

With older kids, parents can sit in front of them and hold their hands as they breathe together, she said.

“It helps because attachment and touch calm anxiety,” Dohrmann said. “When in crisis ... they don’t have an adult brain to calm down. They need touch from a steady adult.”

Teenagers tend to do well with guided meditations, which are available through smartphone apps or Youtube videos.

These strategies don’t need to consume much time — they can be as brief as one minute, Dohrmann said.

“Everybody has a minute,” she said.

Once comfortable, the first thing to do is simply become aware of your body, thoughts and breaths.

“The only thing they need to learn how to do is shift their focus to the breath,” Ross said. “Every meditation practice has the foundational component of bringing awareness to the present moment.”

After that, the goal is to identify whenever a distraction comes up.

“It’s about recognizing when you’re not present and learning that you have the ability to bring your awareness back to something occurring right now,” Ross said. “That’s why the breath is so powerful, it can only occur right now.”

Often, beginners will notice their brain coming up with all sorts of distractions.

Have I finished the laundry?

Does the dog need a walk?

What will I make for dinner?

Thoughts and feelings like these are normal and will likely always come up. The hallmark of meditation isn’t halting these, but learning to recognize them and then return to the breath, Ross said.

It can be useful to identify where in the body the breath is most intensely

felt, whether that be in the belly, the nostrils or the chest, Thompson said. He also recommends trying to identify when there is a long or short breath.

“That gets the mind to calm down,” Thompson said.

Dohrmann suggests beginning with a simple technique of inhaling for four seconds, then exhaling for four seconds, repeating the breath pattern for two minutes.

No failure, just awareness Many people say the reason they haven’t tried meditation is because they can’t find the time, Ross said.

“The reality is … it can be as simple as three to five minutes a day,” he said.

It’s best to try to fit in a brief meditation every day, Dohrmann said, “But whenever you can do it is also best.”

Another reason people give for not wanting to try out meditation is because they worry they won’t do it correctly. But Thompson, Ross and Dohrmann agree there really isn’t a downside to trying.

“There really is no failure in meditation, there’s just observation and awareness,” Ross said.

Thompson points out that even if things don’t go according to plan, it still isn’t a failure.

“Worst-case scenario,” Thompson said, “you fall asleep.”

As challenging as it may be to keep up your fitness regimen while stuck in home quarantine, one thing is almost necessary — an internet connection.

As people across the country fondly recall their gyms stocked with rows of elliptical machines, racks of weights and a schedule full of Zumba classes, their trainers are busy uploading content for their clients at home, all designed to help them whip their bodies back into shape — or at least stop them from losing the physical gains they’ve made.

“I guess we are making the best of a bad situation and have kind of pivoted at this point,” said Jon Cerf, owner of fitness chain Core Progression.

“We’ve pivoted to running all of our facilities virtually for now and doing the quarantine.”

Cerf operates four Core Progression gyms in the Denver Metro area — in Arvada, Lakewood, Northglenn and downtown Denver — with more planned as franchises are slated to open in Florida, North Carolina, California and Nevada.

All the classes Cerf and his team have run in the past few weeks have been virtual.

“Anybody that was doing our small group offerings, we have livestreams through Zoom and Google Hangouts daily,” he said. “Clients that were doing private or semi-private sessions, we can do Facetime and Skype for a more private kind of workout.”

Body weight is all you need And while his gyms are all stocked with the latest equipment designed to push his customers to their physical limits, Cerf said there’s plenty to do in homes that have no such equipment.

Cerf was the official trainer for Fitbit in Colorado for four years, hosting special exercise events around the area.

“Every workout I did for that was 100 percent body weight-based,” Cerf said.

That means lots of push-ups, sit-ups, lunges and squats, but Cerf said there are plenty of ways to vary the routine.

“We never did the same exercise twice in four years,” Cerf said. “And

Get creative. Plumb the depths of the storage closet, the kids’ toy box and the garage for equipment that can be lifted, pulled, pushed or stretched to work out your muscles.

Get outside. As long as walks in the park are acceptable, and keeping physical distance rules in mind, get out and walk.

Some fresh air and the sun can brighten your mood while you get your heart rate up.

Enlist the kids. Roll around with them, wrestle in the back yard, play catch with a ball or a Frisbee. Chuze Fitness trainer Lindsay Gablehouse said she was surprised how much of a workout she got just kicking a soccer ball in the backyard with her sons.

“Each studio has a different calendar, so if they wanted to work with the people in our Boulder location they can sign up there,” Cerf said. “Or if they don’t know which location, we can pair them with the person that’s the best fit during this time.”

Core Progression’s sessions range from $20 to $50 depending on the number of spaces and the duration of each workout. The private videos go both ways, with coaches watching the people training as much as the people training watch them.

Proper technique is key, he said: “It’s all kinesiology, physics and understanding anatomy and how to put people in the right position to get the most benefit. A lot of what we do is individual, and we like to tailor it to our clients. It’s not the same as being there in person, but we can offer tips: Drop your hips, rotate left, bring your knee up. You are still getting that personal coaching as opposed to passively watching a workout.”

Lindsay Gablehouse, the fitness manager for the Chuze Fitness location at 120th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard, said her company is loading up videos on the internet, too. She runs the team training program and also leads cycling, body pump and yoga classes.

Chuze does not offer one-on-one training with their coaches, either online or at the gym. Instead, they focus on training in a group setting. During normal times, the gym hosts seven training sessions throughout the day beginning at 5 a.m. with room for up

to 39 people.

“We had to close off, generally, on March 16,” she said. “That was on Monday, and on Wednesday the 18th we had our first live Chuze class. We had three instructors who went into the gym and did a live session. We had another on the 19th, from one of the instructor’s homes.”

They’ve since adopted a set schedule for content, much of it available for free — even to non-Chuze members.

“We are running seven sessions per day,” she said. “That includes three team training sessions, four group fitness classes — yoga, barre, dance classes and family workouts — and then a family program or a group meditation.”

She’s especially proud of the family sessions, which offer shorter 20-minute workouts and exercises good for all ages.

“We want them to work for little ones, moms and dads and older people,” Gablehouse said. “All they need is a water bottle and a place to work.”

The bulk have been filmed live by the instructors themselves in their own homes and streamed to Facebook and Instagram.

“Our team training sessions run on Instagram, we run two, one at 1 a.m. and at 1 p.m.,” Gablehouse said. “All of our family workouts are on Facebook.

Our group fitness sessions go back and forth, between the two platforms.”

Viewers don’t have to watch them live. Gablehouse said all of the sessions are archived on the @Chuzefitness IGTV link, instagram.com/chuzefitness/channel. They can find more by searching for #Chuzemovement, where coaches, trainers and members are encouraged to post unique ways to exercise without equipment.

Resistance is necessary “People are saying they miss their dumbbells, or the treadmill. So what can they do?” Gablehouse said.

She said she understands needing equipment upon occasion. She suggests using regular household items, like bottles of laundry detergent, to add resistance.

“We have to get creative,” she said.

“At this point we’ve all been told to just pick up some soup cans or the laundry detergent, and I think a lot of people just dismiss that idea. But at the end of the day we need something to pick up, something to push, we need something to pull, to rotate and to squat. So I tell people to go into the garage or the kids room and think creatively. We had one person that laid down flat on the ground and did bench presses with a mountain bike.”

David Wagner, general manager at Fit by Hyland Hills at 120th Avenue and Federal Boulevard, is also a fan of household items.

“You can use a jug of water,” he said. “You hold it in front and do a front squat, just holding it in front of your face. Or you can use a chair or a staircase to do a tricep dip.”

Stairs are a good thing, too, and combining them with something heavy makes for a good workout.

Wagner said some equipment is small and inexpensive and easy to get — even in quarantine. He recommends going online to find elastic bands, wide strips of material that provide resistance and make anything, from a leg lift to an arm curl, more difficult.

Chuze’s Gablehouse said there is plenty of room for creativity, even in body weight exercises.

“We might all know the traditional moves, but for each one there are variations they can do to make those traditional moves different,” she said.

“You can do push-ups from the knee, or from the toes. But you can also do them with one leg lifted. Those are not the same moves and the inten-

sity differences you create there are dramatic.”

She found her children’s sled in her garage and gave herself a workout one day pushing it around the backyard. She said getting outside, whether it’s on neighborhood sidewalks or just in the back yard, is very important.

“With everybody stuck in their homes, we need to play,” she said. “As the house feels smaller and smaller every day, the mental benefit of laughing and getting those natural endorphins running in your body is important. We need to take a couple breaks everyday to just feel good in our bodies and connect with our families.”

Hyland Hills’ Wagner agrees: Just about any movement is good movement.

“Constantly, constantly move. You want to make sure you get up and get some movement during the day,” Wagner said. “Just walk around your house, go on outside and go in the sun in your front yard. Movement is key.

You do not want to be sedentary, and the more you sit down, the more the quarantine gets in your way.”

That does not have to be limited to time spent working out.

“Do what you can to stay busy around the house,” Wagner said. “Do projects you’d normally be putting off.

Clean out the garage, or something.

There are all kinds of things you can do to keep active.”

Gains in the kitchen Nutrition is another area to focus on while stuck indoors, and Wagner said he subscribes to the saying that muscle gains — or weight loss — are made more in the kitchen than they are in the gym. It helps, because his spouse, Blythe, is the nutritionist for Fit, and she and nutritional pharmacist Ray Hinish have put together a series of podcasts called “Cut the Fat” (cutthefatpodcast.com) that focuses on eating well all the time — not just during a quarantine.

“Eat healthy and keeping your habits as they were,” he said. “You still want to prep your meals like you are going to work. That way you don’t put on too much weight.”

Salute to players after hoops cut short All-South Metro athletes honored in unusual season

There were no state basketball champions crowned this season because of the COVID-19 threat that ended competition late in the playoffs in March. But there was plenty of time before that point for the best and brightest to emerge.

To that end, Colorado Community Media brings you the annual unveiling of our All-South Metro Basketball Teams.

Student-athletes were eligible for the recognition if they attended schools in the Douglas County and Littleton districts, as well as Valor Christian, Lutheran, Regis Jesuit, Englewood, Cherry Creek, Grandview, Smoky Hill, Eaglecrest and Cherokee Trail high schools. The selections were made by the CCM sports staff, with input from area coaches.

We’re also recognizing players of the year. For the boys, our choice is Kobe Sanders, of Chaparral. Jana Van Gytenbeek, of Cherry Creek, is our selection on the girls side. Read more about them and the dozen other stellar players in the following.
