Littleton Adventist Hospital celebrates 30 years Facility has grown into renowned neuroscience and trauma center

Littleton Adventist Hospital celebrates its 30th birthday this year, but there are other numbers that tell the story of Littleton’s hospital better: More than a million emergency room visits, 50,000 babies delivered, and 165,000 surgeries conducted.

Hundreds of doctors, volunteers and local dignitaries crowded the soaring atrium of the hospital on April 3 to mark 30 years since April 1989, when Littleton welcomed its first full-service hospital.

Helping the hospital grow has been a great privilege, said Dr. Mark Elliott, the hospital’s medical staff president.

“I graduated from Denver Health residency and started here three months after the hospital opened — it’s been my only job,” Elliott said.

“This place started as a truly small community hospital. Now, we take care of everything — our neuroscience department and trauma center

The hospital is more than a place of healing, said Susan Thornton, who was mayor of Littleton when the hospital opened.

“They’re a fantastic community partner,” Thornton said. “They support so many entities around town, and they’re a major employer. They’re an enormous economic engine, and I never would have predicted the growth of so many medically related businesses nearby.”

Brown took the 30th anniversary celebration as a chance to give back to the people who have given so much themselves, and presented a $2,000 check to the Littleton Hospital Foundation to provide health screenings to underprivileged patients.

“Hopefully that check’s even bigger next year,” Brown said.

Interim CEO Geoff Lawton said the

first 30 years were just a start.

“To all members of our community, we extend thanks, we reaffirm our commitment to the pursuit of excellence,” Lawton said. “We’ll continue to build upon our tradition of care, to achieve our vision for every community, every neighborhood, every life, whole and healthy for many years to come.”

City hikes fees on developers to defray growth costs Mayor wishes increases could have been bigger

City council voted to increase the amount of one-time fees the city collects from land development to pay for increased use of city amenities, though some officials wish the rates could be even higher.

“Development needs to pay for development more than it does right now,” Littleton Mayor Debbie Brinkman said.

Littleton instituted “impact fees” in 2013, according to a presentation

by city Finance Director Tiffany Hooten at the April 2 city council meeting. The fees apply to residential and commercial development, and are used to defray growth-related costs to the Littleton Museum, Bemis Library, police services and city facilities. Other fees go toward transportation costs.

Under a fee revision plan prepared

by BBC Research and Consulting, impact fees will increase from $3,975 per new dwelling unit constructed to $4,522, and non-residential fees will increase from $3.54 per square foot to $3.82. The increases were based in part on more precise valuations of city assets and debt, according to the plan.

The changes will add up to an estimated $81,000 in increased fees in 2019,

according to the analysis.

“Budgetwise, that’s nothing,” said Councilmember Jerry Valdes at a March 5 study session that discussed the fee increases.

The amount of impact fees collected by the city in recent years fluctuates widely, according to the city budget.

Impact fee revenue was $729,000 in 2015, $3.1 million in 2016, $1 million in 2017, and $667,000 in 2018. The city anticipated impact fee revenue of $696,500 in the 2019 budget.

Brinkman said she was disappointed the rates didn’t climb higher.

“I’m not 100 percent comfortable with (BBC’s) analysis,” Brinkman said. “I’d like to see a greater, more rigorous review of this stuff.”

For example, Brinkman said, she’d

like impact fees geared toward parks and recreation costs.

The city contracts with South Suburban Parks and Recreation to oversee the city’s parks, and the district has been asking for hefty sums to refurbish local playgrounds in recent years, Brinkman said.

Impact fees will see greater scrutiny and reworking in coming months and years, City Manager Mark Relph said.

“The intent is to fully explore other alternatives to assess impact fees,” Relph said at the March 5 study session, though it will have to wait until the city’s new comprehensive plan is complete, which is scheduled for October.

“We’ll take on a much bigger effort then,” Relph said.

‘It had a big impact on my life’ State Rep. Patrick Neville, a student at Columbine in 1999, fights for gun owners’ rights

Ask Tom Mauser about his shoes.

Mauser’s son Daniel was killed at Columbine High School in 1999. In the years that followed, Mauser became an outspoken advocate for stronger gun laws.

And through every event, every rally, every speech, if you look at Mauser’s feet, you’ll see the same pair of sneakers.

“These are the shoes Daniel was wearing when he died,” Mauser said.

“We wear the same size. This way, I feel like Daniel is walking with me.”

Before Daniel’s death, Mauser said he wasn’t much of an activist. He’d write the occasional letter to the editor, he said, but Columbine threw him into the public eye.

Mauser said he was haunted by a brief conversation he had with his son two weeks before he was killed.

“Daniel was on the debate team, and after a conversation with his teammates, he said, ‘Dad, did you know there are loopholes in the Brady Bill?’

I blew it off and said, ‘No, Daniel, I didn’t know that.’”

The bill requires background checks for gun sales. The Columbine killers obtained their guns through a friend who bought them at a gun show, according to news reports from the time, circumventing the law.

“I felt I had to act,” Mauser said.

“I brought a sign with a picture of my son, and 400 fliers to pass out,” Mauser said. “Thousands of people showed up. I had no idea.”

An organizer asked him to speak to the crowd.

“It took me out of my shell,” Mauser said. “I’ve never been the same since.”

Mauser is now a spokesman and board member for Ceasefire Colorado, a group that advocates for stricter gun laws.

“We have to take this seriously,” Mauser said. “We have a shameful level of gun violence in America, and we have to do something about it.”

Closing loopholes in gun-sale laws is a high priority for Mauser, as are universal background checks. Mauser also supports the recently passed “red flag” bill, a controversial measure that would allow judges to order guns taken from people believed to pose a threat to themselves or others. He would also like to see laws that prohibit felons from owning guns extended to people convicted of misdemeanors involving violence.

Mauser said he’s all too familiar with arguments against him from gun rights advocates.

“I love responding to the logic or illogic of my opponents,” Mauser said.

“By and large, the majority of Americans support the right to bear arms.

Patrick Neville was a 15-year-old sophomore at Columbine High School when two armed students walked into the building and killed 13 people, then themselves. He was on school grounds but outside when the shooting began, he said.

He doesn’t go into detail about what he saw and heard in those moments. There are survivors with more compelling stories than his, he said, and the events of that day have been widely reported. Besides, recounting the story time and time again is “exhausting,” he said, particularly leading up to the massacre’s 20th anniversary.

But make no mistake: “It had a big impact on my life,” Neville said.

Today, Neville, 35, is a Republican state representative and the House minority leader. The Castle Rock resident is among Colorado’s leading voices on gun-owners’ rights and stood in opposition to the recently passed “red flag” bill that allows firearms to be temporarily taken away from people deemed a significant threat to themselves or others.

April 20, 1999 was a blur, but it wholly changed his life trajectory, Neville said on a late-March day at his office in the state Capitol.

Later in his collegiate career, at the University of Colorado Denver, it would influence his perspective on gun rights.

His most vivid memory of the day of the tragedy is of students gathering at an elementary school following the shooting. First, there was a crowd, but as buses came to evacuate them, it slowly dwindled.

Then, the father of a student asked if Neville had seen his son.

Neville had not.

He’d known the father who approached him, and his son, since the third grade. The boys played baseball together and served as captains of their team as their fathers coached.

By high school, Neville was making all the wrong choices — in his words, he was a “punk.” Meanwhile, the man’s son “was making all the right decisions in life.” The two had drifted apart as a result.

“Once the names came out, he never got to see his son again,” Neville said, declining to name the father in what he called a political-

But that’s where the survivor’s guilt caught up with him, Neville said. Students who were excelling died that day. It inspired the teenager to change his life course.

He would go on to serve in the U.S. Army and deploy to Iraq, which impacted his life similarly to how Columbine did. He watched families mourn lost loved ones and he buried his friends. It called to mind going to the funerals of his peers after Columbine.

Then in 2014, he became the state representative for House District 45, encompassing Castle Rock, Castle Pines and portions of unincorporated Douglas County. He’s now in his third term.

Neville said he didn’t have strong opinions on gun rights until college, when he received his conceal-carry permit.

“At the time, it was illegal for me to conceal carry in my college classroom,” he said, “and if there was one place that I really felt uncomfortable or vulnerable it was sitting in a classroom.”

Colorado now allows permit holders to carry firearms on highereducation campuses.

This legislative session, Neville introduced a bill to allow someone with a concealed-carry permit to carry a firearm on public elementary, middle, junior high and high school grounds.

David Walcher had just gotten back from a celebratory breakfast and was on his way to lunch with a fellow member of the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office.

Walcher, a member of the National Sheriffs’ Association’s subcommittee for preventing school violence.

Schools across the country have likely implemented certain security measures, but Walcher said they shouldn’t become “prisons.”

“Maybe it’s schools, maybe it’s law enforcement, maybe it’s mental health, maybe it’s parents, maybe it’s the entertainment industry” that all need to be part of a solution, Walcher added.

Friends, family, teachers and others who come into contact often with students should watch for “red flags” in a student’s life, Walcher said.

“When you see a kid start to change their behavior, be less social, grades plummet, or they’re in sports and then they stop, or when mom and dad get divorced, maybe they become loners,” Walcher said, adding that bullying should be watched for, too. “Some of those tipping points that drive them away from everyone … that’s where the prevention is so critical.”

He hopes people understand that incidents like Columbine can happen in their communities. The problem isn’t going away, he said, but incidents can be averted.

“Could we have a more positive effect on this?” Walcher said. “Absolutely, absolutely.”

This means the muscles in the legs are no longer getting enough blood flow during exercise, or even general walking. On rare occasions, the pain can also be felt in the arms.

MacDonald said PVD can be treated through a variety of methods

such as inserting stents and balloons to open up the arteries, which significantly improves blood flow.

Since the primary complaint from patients is leg pain, MacDonald said PVD is an under-diagnosed condition because symptoms are similar to arthritis. Doctors might overlook it, or not consider running the tests to see if it is in fact PVD causing the issues.

MacDonald said patients thinking they might have PVD can head over to South Denver Cardiology, or they can ask their regular-care physician to run an ABI (ankle-brachial index) test.

“These are simple tests to order,

and the results can be determined in a matter of minutes,” MacDonald said. “Any physician can order these tests. These tests can help a doctor differentiate between the pain being caused by arthritis or if it’s really PVD.” With a clear diagnosis, MacDonald said South Denver Cardiology moves forward as it does with all patients.

They tailor a plan of action to each individual patient. Because it’s about treating the entire patient, MacDonald said they will treat the PVD, but also work on nutrition, exercise plans and making sure that improving quality of life is a top priority.

n the Denver metro area suburbs, the person who oversees a city or town’s dayto-day operations is not the mayor or another elected official. It is the city manager.

The city manager — or town manager or town administrator, depending on where you live — is appointed by the city or town council. The manager is then tasked with implementing policy decisions made by the council.

He or she can also be fired by the council.

In this report, Colorado Community Media is providing you with the annual salaries of the managers for the 15 largest suburban municipalities in CCM’s coverage area. Construction is picking up along Belleview Avenue west of the South Platte River.

The Centennial Square shopping center, across Belleview from Home Depot and home to Dollar Tree and Dairy Queen, is adding a sizable new building as part of an overhaul by its new owners.

Next door, the Platte 56 townhome development is getting closer to completion, with most of the 56 units already sold.

Further west, however, there’s little news about Columbine Square, the former strip mall demolished in 2018 after sitting vacant for years.

‘The Belleview Connection’ Construction activity is heavy behind King Soopers and the AMF Lanes bowling alley at Centennial Square, which was bought by Armstrong Capital Development in 2017 for $7.5 million, according to county

records.

The shopping center, which includes five buildings, is being overhauled and rebranded as The Belleview Connection, said Kathryn Sorensen, Armstrong’s vice president of development.

“We’re working on giving it a new lease on life,” Sorensen said. “It’s in a great location, and we’re not changing the nature of it. We’re excited to see shovels in the ground.”

The first order of business: construction of a 22,000-square-foot building at the center’s northwest corner, to replace a building that burned down years ago, Sorensen said.

The building will be home to a Planet Fitness location, Sorensen said, and should be open by this fall.

The center’s other buildings will all be “freshened up” with new exteriors to match the new building, Sorensen said.

“We want to give the center a more modern and cohesive look so it doesn’t look like the fitness building is tacked on,” Sorensen said.

Down-home townhomes Meanwhile, units are being sold at a rapid clip at Platte 56, an upscale townhome development just east of the shopping center, abutting the South Platte River.

Residents are starting to move into some of the development’s 56 units, said sales specialist Kathy Donahoe.

Forty have been sold so far, she said, with the final 12 yet to be released for sale.

Units range in price from roughly $450,000 for a 1,400-square-foot, two-bedroom unit to $750,000 for a 2,100-square-foot, four bedroom unit, according to the company’s website.

“It’s a great alternative to downtown Littleton,” Donahoe said. “You have everything you need — groceries, banking, Home Depot — within walking distance. Not to mention the proximity to the Mary Carter Greenway. You know what they say in real estate: `location, location, location.’ ” Vacant lot There’s little to report at Columbine Square, however. RedwoodKairos Real Estate Partners, the site’s owner, submitted designs for a possible mixed-use, high-density development for the site at Belleview and Federal Boulevard for review by city

staff last November, but have taken no further official action.

The plans would require rezoning the site, which would kick off a lengthy review and approval process, according to city staff. RedwoodKairos did not respond to a request for comment.

Watching the evolution Littleton Mayor Debbie Brinkman said she’s glad to see improvements along the corridor, especially in the context of the Belleview Corridor Plan, a vision document ratified in 2018 that spells out plans to revitalize the area.

Brinkman said she remains a little miffed, however, at how close Platte 56 sits to the river.

“It’s just too close to the trail,” Brinkman said. “I wish we hadn’t allowed it to get so close. It’s hard to visualize things in a two-dimensional drawing.”

Still, Brinkman said she’s glad the project will add dozens of new homeowners to the stretch.

“Watching that demographic come in, hopefully they’ll support redevelopment of the area,” Brinkman said.

More for-sale units would make a good addition to Columbine Square, Brinkman said.

“I’d like to see smart multi-use,” Brinkman said. “Not super high density. I’d like some nice neighborhood shops and places people can gather.

That’s what the community has told us they want.”

Overall, Brinkman said she’s hopeful.

“It’ll be interesting to watch it all evolve,” she said.

Shooting range stalled again by new lawsuit Triple J Armory’s parking inadequate, neighbor alleges

A controversial gun store in south Littleton is facing another lawsuit, again stalling out the owners’ plans to complete a shooting range that has drawn the ire of neighbors.

Triple J Armory, which moved its retail operation into a building at 8152 South Park Lane in October, is facing a lawsuit by RHR Investment, which owns 8122 South Park Lane, an adjacent building home to several commercial tenants.

At issue is parking. RHR, owned by mother and son team Renata and Ron Lilischkies, alleges that Triple J does not have adequate parking to satisfy the terms of a covenant agreement that governs both properties.

In a complaint filed in the suit, RHR argues that owners fear Triple J customers will inevitably begin parking in a group of spaces shared by the buildings, likely violating RHR’s prohibition on guns on its premises.

Triple J co-owner J.D. Murphree, however, testified in an April 5 court hearing that both the City of Littleton

Triple J Armory, a gun store in south Littleton, is facing yet another lawsuit, as a neighboring business alleges the store has inadequate parking. The suit has again stalled construction on the store’s controversial shooting range. and the South Park Owners Association — which settled its own lawsuit with Triple J in the final days of 2018 — signed off on Triple J’s parking arrangements, and argued that RHR’s calculations included the full square footage of the indoor shooting range, rather than the number of stalls in the range.

“Nobody will be downrange while people are shooting,” Murphree said at the hearing, calling the downrange area a “no man’s land” that should be immaterial to parking calculations.

Hard work staying afloat in a sea of fraud

N

ot too long ago, one of our newspaper employees received what looked like an urgent email from the company publisher. He needed some prepaid gift cards, totaling hundreds of dollars, and needed them quick.

The employee went across the street and bought the prepaid cards, eager to help out the boss.

Luckily, that’s as far as things went. The email had been a sham, faked by a computer-savvy scammer.

By now, we’re all aware of the scam in which a supposed Nigerian prince is quite eager to share his great wealth with you, if only you’d give him a down payment, or at least your bank account number and a few

But those easy-to-spot scams are old news. Nowadays, there are countless newer and more complex con jobs out there, looking to snag even the smartest of us. Email scams look more and more legit, just asking us to click one innocuous link. Sneaky hidden devices are attached to neighborhood ATMs and gas pumps, attempting to skim credit card information.

Fraudsters can be downright brazen. Recently, Jefferson County investigators found that scammers were making it look as if their calls were originating from the sheriff ’s

department, and used names of real deputies to try to appear legitimate.

The scary truth is that scammers don’t even have to trick you directly any more.

On Jan. 4, thieves broke into a storage facility and stole personal information of more than 500 people, including addresses, dates of birth and medication lists from the CVS pharmacy inside Target at 5071 Kipling in Wheat Ridge. That data breach, of course, is dwarfed by the constant stream of data-hacking scandals we hear about constantly. Recently, news broke that your Facebook password is likely compromised. Go change it now, if you haven’t.

Automation also has created much

more scamming.

Unfortunately for us, Colorado seems to be a popular hunting ground for the current crop of crooks. The state ranks second, just slightly behind Nevada, in terms of total complaints about fraudulent robocalls, according to the Federal Trade Commission. In fact, Colorado’s attorney general recently identified spam and fraud calls as the number one source of consumer complaint in 2018.

This being tax season, the number of fraud calls we’re all receiving is only going to be increasing.

In a world where stress and being stretched too thin drives us to work harder and not smarter, achievers have figured out that creating an island of success comes from their moments of peace and solitude.

So where can we find these islands of success? Some find it on walks along the beach, a hike in the mountains, in a cabin or retreat, or even stopping on a great tree run while skiing to take in a few moments of solitude surrounded by aspens, evergreens, and blankets of untracked snow.

For the record, the IRS: • Will not call you demanding immediate payment of taxes.

• Will not ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

• Will not threaten police arrest or lawsuits over the phone.

The IRS says if you suspect the call is a scam, hang up immediately without giving any information and call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.

Here are some other tips that may help you avoid scams, according to authorities.

fter graduating college, Travis Wild soon found that spending time in the mountains and on trails in Colorado gave him a place to reconnect with himself and restore his mind.

“For me, the outdoors are how everything is supposed to be without influence of problems,” Wild said, adding that nature has been the steady support in his life through rough times.

When he was diagnosed with testicular cancer almost five years ago, at age 26, Wild turned to nature to destress and cope with the difficult situation. The diagnosis came when he was changing jobs, changing relationships and mourning the loss of his grandmother.

“Outside was a place that I could go to step back and be in control a little more,” Wild said. “I got to feel normal again. Sometimes it was the only thing I had to look forward to.”

Now, Wild lives on the road, having turned his passion for outdoor space and adventure into a career as an

Wild is not alone when it comes to feeling improved mental health in the outdoors.

Proximity to green space has been associated with lower levels of stress and a reduction of symptoms for depression and anxiety, while interacting with nature can improve cognition for children with attention deficits and individuals

with depression.

“As a psychologist, when we’re trained we don’t talk about things like being outdoors as an intervention,” said Benjamin Miller, a psychologist on the board of Mental Health Colorado. “But when you think about the exposure to nature, there’s no surprise that it can decrease some symptoms of anxiety and depression.”

arlem in the 1930s was one of those cultural flashpoints that happen throughout history. Artists in all kinds of mediums found themselves in the same place, sharing inspiration and ideas and working together.

With so many talented people sharing a space, some are going to receive more attention than others, which is why many people may not be familiar with the pianist and songwriter J. C. Johnson. But “Trav’lin” the final production of the Arvada Center’s COMING aims to ATTRACTIONS 2018-2019 address this.

“Musically, the 1930’s through 50’s era is my era for music,” said Milton Craig Nealy, who plays George in the show. “Everything was so artistic. The dialogue and the music being written Clarke Reader then was so beautiful.”

The regional premiere of “Trav’lin” runs at the theater, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., through April 28. Performances are at 1 p.m. Wednesdays, 7:30 p.m.

Tuesdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Featuring the music of Johnson – who is most well-known for working with greats like Fats Waller and Bessie Smith, as well as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald – the show focuses on three generations of couples as they attempt to find their way to each other in the world of early jazz and swing.

“There’s nothing like a great lyric, even though we’re living in a time that’s pretty jaded,” said Natalie Oliver Atherton, who plays Billie. “I think audiences will be truly entertained and be lifted by these love stories.”

Both Atherton and Nealy spoke glowingly of the work done by every department to bring this vibrant time in history to life and how much fun the cast has had bringing their characters to life.

“This is one of those old-fashioned musicals with the kind of happy endings you don’t very much anymore,” Nealy said. “These artists were achieving so much, and I love the music they were writing.”

“I spoke with my 27-year-old son and he recognized the roots of hip-hop in the music being made at this time,” Atherton added. “So, even younger kids will find connections in this music to what they’re listening to today.”

Two stages offer vastly different views Musical offers good times, while drama takes dark look at family

Spring has sprung and new stage productions abound in the metro area.

• New this week: “The World Goes ‘Round” at Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center is a revue of songs by American team John Kander and Fred Ebb, the duo that gave us “Cabaret” and “Chicago” and many other musicals.

Presented through April 28, the collection presents 34 songs by the team, presented by five finely tuned singers: Maggie Lamb, Traci Kern, Lynzee Newton-Jones, Matt LaFontaine and Jeremy Rill, accompanied by a swingin’ six-piece band.

Nick Sugar is director/choreographer and Donna Kolpan Debreceni is music director on keyboard. The live music adds a great deal to the performance as singers come and go in various combinations. Some solo numbers are included, but most include several and choreography is smooth and simple. Songs such a “All That Jazz,” “Cabaret” and “Kiss of the Spider Woman” are familiar, but it’s fun to discover new numbers such as “Arthur in the Afternoon.”

The set is minimal and costumes are sparkly/shiny or simpler for the women. The keyboard, with director Debreceni, is at the bottom and other

musicians are ranged up steps against the backdrop, several with more than one instrument. The sound is clear and fills the theatre.

The voices are fine and blend well, giving the audience a treat as they enjoy new material. Nick Sugar reproduced the original choreography by Susan Stroman. The title song was written for Liza Minelli to sing in the film, “New York, New York.”

• Cherry Creek Theatre opened “Other Desert Cities” by Jon Robin Baitz, which also runs through April 28 at Mizel Arts and Culture Center. Sheila Ivy Traister debuts as director.

Conservative ex-Hollywood parents Polly (Abby Apple Boes) and Lyman (Michael McNeill) are not happy to hear about the memoir and wonder if she can’t just wait until they are dead to publish … Her brother Trip, (Charles Lederer), is a calmer voice that ties events together- and Polly’s fresh-from-rehab sister Silda rounds out this cast. Silda is played by Pam Clifton.

A strong play about a family that has all sorts of issues, it was a finalist for the Pulitzer and probably illustrates a writer trying to come to terms with his own difficult world, director Traister speculates in her notes.

“There is no love greater than family and hence no wounds that cut deeper …” she wrote. Probably the whole production will jell a bit further as these actors work together. At which point, it will be even more poignant to watch.

Colorado playwright’s work takes stage ‘Sin Street Social Club’ is farce set in New Orleans

Two weathered facades with shutters are set side by side at the back of a busy New Orleans square — one is the (Ba)sin Street Social Club and the other, we soon learn, houses the notorious Angie B. A (reluctant) young novice, Helen (Jessica Robblee), wanders onto the scene, saying she is to take her vows soon — and looking sad and uncertain about it.

The club had been built by her daddy, and her sister, Florie Mae (Emily Van Fleet) is a singer there, while protective manager/brother Pete (Zachary Andrews) lets us know that he needs for the sisters to be married or otherwise securely set in place, for the club to remain in family hands … he is overly bossy and protective as he tries to herd a pair of feisty young women. (Perhaps some modulation in his presentation might make him more effective?? Lots of yelling.) A deadline looms.

APRIL WATER MAIN FLUSHING PROGRAM The City of Englewood Utilities Department will conduct its annual fire hydrant flushing program starting April 22.

During this week, the water mains throughout the City will be flushed between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.

The Water ++ Distribution crews will isolate sections of pipe by shutting off valves to connecting pipes, then opening fire hydrants to full volume to clean residue and sediment from the water mains. The resulting surge of water flushes mineral accumulations from the main.

‘Helping a brother make a last wish come true’

or Christian Redman, the Last Ride fulfilled a heartfelt wish: A celebration with his daughter in Kentucky on her 18th birthday, a reunion with fellow 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment troopers and veterans, and a chance to once more sink his toes in the sand of a Key West beach.

“I just want to thank everybody who hleped me — I really appreciate it,” said Redman, 51, a Parker resident who is dying of the late-stage colon cancer he has fiercely fought for three years. His doctors in November gave him eight to 16 months to live. “I never will forget it.”

Rocky Cuda, a retired sergeant from the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment — an Army unit also known as the Blackhorse Regiment — came up with the idea for a kind of make-a-wish last ride for Blackhorse troopers with Redman as the inaugural event. He called it Maverick’s Last Ride after Redman’s call sign from his Army days.

The plan was for a caravan-style road trip leaving March 4 from Parker to Louisville, Kentucky, so Redman could celebrate with his daughter on her 18th birthday on March 10, then on to the Daytona Beach bike week SEE REDMOND, P25

One study found that 30 minutes of nature exposure per week reduces depression by 7 percent and can reduce high blood pressure by 9 percent.

“One of the really interesting things this study shows is that nature contact during the workday leads to lower stress and higher job satisfaction,” Miller said.

In addition to being surrounded by nature, Miller said the practices that come with it help to improve mental health.

“We are we able to rest our minds and be present and focus on the moment,” Miller said.

In 2018, 55 percent of visitors to Jefferson County Open Space parks and trails said they saw the outdoor space as adding extreme benefit to their emotional wellbeing, ranking it fourth on a survey that measured the benefits of open space.

“We all knew it in our hearts, but to see it on paper was impactful,” said Mary Ann Bonnell, visitor services manager for Jeffco Open Space. “We now understand that people implicitly come to our parks for emotional wellbeing.”

This was the first time the survey, conducted last in 2011, measured this metric.

The next step, Bonnell said, is to protect visitor experience as best as possible. That means preserving a quiet park and trail, so those who want to connect with nature can.

Jeffco Open Space has an amplified music regulation as well as a drone ban and leash law.

“I know these seem tangential, but it’s respecting the experience people are having outdoors,” Bonnell said. “We want to make sure that while you’re getting your fix, you’re not denying that stress release from others.”

It’s not all about guns, Mauser said. The Columbine tragedy happened because “two mentally disturbed young men weren’t getting the care they needed,” he said.

“They were determined to commit suicide, and determined to take others with them,” Mauser said. “All societies have people who are suicidal. But in America, we seem to have people who want to take others with them,

More surgical suites: With the expectation of offering cardiac care to more patients, Mathias said Swedish is adding more space, including more clinic space, and additional heart-surgery operating space with advanced imaging technology that is used to guide complex surgeries, such as those performed in the heart and legs.

“We are looking at all areas in cardiac care and working to grow our services,” Mathias said. “Our continued goal is to expand our role as a regional cardiac referral center. We believe in quick access to high-quality care. We want to ensure we are providing that for all of our patients.”

Triple J’s lawyer Colin Diehl argued that the Lilischkies’ lawsuit was disingenuous, citing emails Ron Lilischkies sent to the South Park Owners Association and comments he made to Littleton City Council objecting to a gun store and shooting range as a bad fit for the area.

The suit has stalled Triple J’s buildout, Murphree testified, because his bank placed him in default on his loan after being informed of the filing, leaving him unable to pay contractors building the range.

Triple J has spent $1.2 million so far building the range, accord-

ing to a court filing, and had to postpone a planned March 9 grand opening after the suit was filed.

Triple J has been in the news for years. It was the target of two completed burglaries and another attempted burglary in its old location off of County Line Road.

The City of Littleton issued a stop-work order on Triple J’s new location in 2018 after finding the company had been constructing its shooting range without permits.

Neighbors, particularly residents of the nearby Highline Crossing cohousing community, have maintained a drumbeat of opposition to the project, arguing the shooting range is too close to nearby schools and day cares, and will cause noise and safety concerns.

Neither Murphree nor the Lilischkies would comment for this article, citing ongoing litigation.

with the final stop in Key West. There would be other stops along the way where Blackhorse troopers and veterans, on motorcyles or in cars, could join in.

Ray Simpson, a Blackhorse veteran in Colorado Springs, offered to drive Redman in his Ford pickup, pulling a 36-foot camper. Redman’s friends and local veterans set up a GoFundMe account and held fundraisers to help cover the trip’s expenses and Redman’s ongoing medical bills. As of March 31, about $10,400 had been raised.

The Last Ride didn’t happen exactly as planned: Redman was too sick to make the road trip. But he was able to fly to Louisville to be with his daughter on her birthday. He returned home for doctor appointments, then flew to Key West on March 15, where he spent five days with Cuda, Simpson and

The trip, he said, was a true blessing: “Key West was beautiful as always. It was good to see my brothers, and the weather was fantastic. It’s just a different atmosphere down there — something’s always going on. It helped me forget that I was sick for a little while.”

And, Redman said, “I did sink my toes in the sand.”

Fast learner fastens on fastball Conner Cummiskey makes move into pitching role

C

onner Cummiskey made his debut as a varsity pitcher early this season and looked impressive in allowing only one hit in four innings.

The junior is the Heritage third baseman, plus he is filling in on the mound and was a standout in his initial career start against rival Arapahoe on March 23.

“I’m a football and baseball player but I like baseball better,” said Cummiskey, who was the Eagles’ starting quarterback on the football team last fall. “I just feel like I have a better future in baseball and I just like the game better the way it is played.”

His first varsity mound appearance should provide his with some confidence.

“I enjoy playing third every day but I feel like I am a better pitcher for college,” he said. “I am probably going to college to be a pitcher. In any situation where it is on the line, I’m going fastball. That’s the pitch I always rely on.

I work on my off speed a lot and I just picked up a new pitch, a knuckle curve ball. I’m working on that and trying to get better with that. “

Q&A with Cummiskey Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Baker Mayfield. I love the way he plays and his competitive mindset. He just goes out and competes every day.

What or who motivates you most to excel in sports?

Probably my dad (Tom), he just pushes me every day to be the best that I can be.

What would be a perfect performance in your sport?

Depending on how many at bats I get, let’s say 3-for-3 and a home run hopefully. And just making every play. If I’m on the mound, just filling up and throwing strikes and hopefully my defense can back me up

What is your favorite class in school and why?

I’ve always liked math What do you like to do away from sports and school?

I like to ski. I skied a lot this winter because I don’t play a winter sport. I usually stop about a month before the season starts so I don’t get hurt.

What are your plans after high school?

I want to play college baseball Is it easier to throw a 10-yard down-and-out pass or a strike in baseball?

Probably it is easier to throw a strike.

Key stats | After six games, Cummiskey was hitting .278 with a double and two triples among his five hits. So far he had made just the one start against Arapahoe and picked up the win. As the starting quarterback for the Eagles last football season, Cummiskey passed for 1,729 yards with 15 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

ocal products Mallory Pugh and Lindsey Horan, members of the U.S. women’s soccer team, joined an impressive assembly of people on April 3 when they each accepted Denver Challenge Coins and personalized street signs from OVERTIME Denver mayor Michael B. Hancock.

A Denver Challenge Coin is the equivalent of the key to the city. Only 30 people have received a Challenge Coin from Jim Benton Hancock and some of those people include Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

Others who have been honored include John Elway, former Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Chauncey Billups, Stevie Wonder and local military servicemen and women and firefighters.

Pugh, the 20-year-old who played with Real Colorado and for three seasons at Mountain Vista High School, is the youngest American to play and score as an 18-year-old in the Olympic Games. She plays for the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League.

Horan, 24, played club soccer for the Colorado Rush and graduated from Golden High school, but did not play soccer for the school. She was the first American female soccer player to sign a professional contract directly out of high school with Paris Saint-Germain. She has played pro soccer since 2012 and is currently on the Portland Thorns’ roster.

Pugh and Horan were in town with the national team for a friendly match on April 4 against Australia at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The game was one of the countdown matches for the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer.

The Americans rallied to notch a 5-3 victory and Pugh came in as a sub and scored twice to spark the USA win.

Swimming and diving update Mountain Vista swimming coach Rob Nasser has come out with the first boys swimming and diving report of the spring season, so we can now provide an update and a preview of what and whom to watch from the area.

Regis Jesuit, Cherry Creek and Fossil Ridge are rated as the top 5A teams and Wheat Ridge is seventh in the 4A team rankings.

Cherry Creek senior Brendan Eckerman has the fastest 5A times recorded so far this season in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 freestyle of 21.42 and 46.99, respectively, and he ranks second in the 200 freestyle. Junior Nathan Griffin of Ponderosa has the best time in the 100 backstroke of 51:11.

The 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams of Cherry Creek have turned in the best times of the season.

Ryan Peterson of Wheat Ridge has been clocked in 20.94 in the 50 freestyle and 45.88 in the 100 freestyle to top 4A swimmers.

Then on April 4 at Creek, the Bruins rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-7 win . . . Rock Canyon’s Grace Dunkleberger tied for medalist honors with a 1-overpar 73 at the Continental League tournament on April 1 at Lone Tree Golf Club.

Rock Canyon won the event by 19 shots . . . Ralston Valley and Valor Christian tied for team honors in the Jeffco 5A golf meet at the Broadlands Golf Club on April 3 as Anju Ogi of Arvada West carded a 77 for the low individual score.
