Lazarus, who by day is a family doctor in Lone Tree, specializes in orchetral arrangements of works by Piazzolla, an Argentine composer.

Lazarus chose the electric cello for its incredible range of sounds, he said. The instrument looks like a minimalist version of its acoustic counterpart, with a body barely wider than the strings.

Arranging the pieces took hundreds of hours, Lazarus said.

“It’s one of the most unique pieces the orchestra’s ever put on,” he said.

The Littleton Symphony Orchestra performs at Littleton United Methodist Church. Its next concert is “Beethoven and the Pines” on April 3.

The Littleton Block Party may return in 2020, thanks in part to reduced special event fees from South Metro Fire Rescue.

Organizer Greg Reinke canceled the annual June bash in 2019, blaming increased event fees and tighter regulations from South Metro, which took over firefighting duties for Littleton at the end of 2018.

Now, with some of the fees reduced, Reinke says he’s hopeful he can bring back the party that many call the unofficial start of summer in Littleton — even if there are still some details to be hammered out.

“There’s still the matter of the pyrotechnics fee,” Reinke said. The Block Party typically features two fireworks shows. “That could be a show stopper.

Some people have told me, `Well, just don’t do the fireworks shows.’ But that would be like going to Disneyland if the rides were all closed.”

Last year’s permits topped $1,600 — $1,123 for the fireworks permit and $483 for a special event permit, or more than 10 times the $150 Reinke used to pay Littleton Fire Rescue.

Though other members of the Historic Downtown Littleton Merchants Association, of which Reinke is president, offered to pay the difference, Reinke canceled the show, saying he was afraid costs would keep climbing.

The new fee schedule reduces the special event permit fee to $260, and a fee schedule on South Metro’s website lists the pyrotechnics fee as $1,079.

A reduction of less than $300 from last year might not seem like much, but it helps, Reinke said, though he’s still hoping South Metro will work with him on the pyrotechnics fee.

The pyrotechnics fee is likely to stand for the time being, said South Metro fire marshal Anthony Valdez.

“That’s not part of our new fee schedule, though it will be part of the grander fee schedule review we’re undergoing right now,” Valdez said.

The pyrotechnics fee covers a plan review, pre-event inspection, oversight during the display, the cost to keep a firetruck on standby and a post-event inspection, Valdez said in 2019.

Aspen Grove left with photos after studio’s sudden closure Hundreds of family pictures await owners at shopping center

Hundreds of family portraits are piled in the Aspen Grove shopping center’s management office awaiting their owners, after the Portrait Innovations photo studio closed suddenly after Christmas.

The studio is one of dozens of Portrait Innovations locations that closed without warning in the final days of 2019, according to news reports from around the country.

“We had no notice,” said Aspen Grove spokeswoman Allysen Santilli.

“They fired everyone, locked the door, and that was it. We’re as surprised as the customers, and it affects us as landlords too.”

Portrait Innovations left everything behind when they closed, Santilli said, including furnishings, photography equipment — and photos belonging to more than 200 people. The studio had operated at Aspen Grove since 2006.

Because management doesn’t have keys to individual shops, Aspen Grove management went to court to gain access. A judge’s ruling allowed management to re-key the store, and Aspen Grove staff retrieved the hundreds of photo prints.

Now, staff are working their way through the photos, reaching out to families whose contact information is printed on the photo packages. Some, however, have no contact listed.

Worse, Santilli said, are those orders that weren’t printed or completed before the store shut down. Those customers should dispute the charges with their bank, she said.

Portrait Innovations, which was based in North Carolina, declared bankruptcy in 2017, according to court records. The case was closed in October 2019, but the company was still tens of millions of dollars in debt.

Locations from coast to coast closed around New Year’s, according to news reports. The company’s website and Facebook pages have been taken down.

Reporters who visited the company’s headquarters in North Carolina found the doors locked and the lights off. Owner John Grosso did not answer multiple phone numbers listed for him, and reporters got no answer at his Charlotte, North Carolina home.

Santilli said a photo studio creates meaningful products for people, and it was sad to see how Portrait Innovations treated customers.

“Lots of people have been coming for years,” Santilli said. “There’s heart behind these pictures.One mother had newborn pictures taken. They’re not a newborn anymore. I spoke with a grandma who told me she got her photo taken because she didn’t know

April Lahr said she has been getting family photos at Portrait Innovations twice a year for the last eight years — once in the summer for her kids’ birthdays, and again every Christmas.

She drove to Portrait Innovations from Parker twice in January trying to get her most recent round of photos.

“The first time I thought maybe the manager had just stepped out for lunch,” Lahr said. “The second time I realized something was wrong. I’m really thankful Aspen Grove is stepping up.”

The JCPenney photo studio at Park Meadows mall in Lone Tree is offering free Portrait Club memberships to former Portrait Innovations clients, said studio manager Melissa Falkenberg.

The membership gives clients free sitting fees for two years.

Portrait Innovations’ closure wasn’t a surprise to Falkenberg, who worked for the company for years before going to JCPenney.

“It’s a dying business,” Falkenberg said of old-school portrait studios. “In the era of digital photography, everyone’s a photographer. The difference with a portrait studio is we’re professionals who undergo a lot of training to give you the best presentation.

We’re trained to work with children, and we handle all the prints as well.”

In the meantime, Aspen Grove management is working on selling or disposing of the furniture and equipment left behind at Portrait Innovations, while tracking down the owners of the photos.

“We’re working extra hard,” Santilli said. “We’re always here for our customers.”

Littleton Public Schools explores boundary changes District looking to redraw map to improve bus routes

Some Littleton Public Schools students could wind up switching schools in coming years as the district works toward a reshuffling of its school boundaries.

The district’s Long-Range Planning Committee (LRPC) is seeking feedback from parents on a pair of proposals to redraw the map for which neighborhoods are assigned to which schools.

The move comes as the district rebuilds an elementary school and combines two others at the southeast corner of the district, and grapples with surging local traffic that has bus speeds slowed to a crawl.

The new boundaries would also eliminate two “orphan” boundaries created when Ames and Whitman elementaries were closed in 2009, forcing students in the district’s far-south end to be bused past closer elementary schools to attend Lenski and Franklin elementaries — trips that can take more than half an hour each way.

“We’re trying to optimize our use of resources while minimizing disruptions to families, and sometimes those goals can be in tension,” said

LPS board member Robert Reichardt.

“Nothing is set in stone yet.”

The new boundaries likely wouldn’t take effect until the fall of 2021, when Ames Elementary School reopens for the first time since 2009. A new school on the Franklin Elementary campus is scheduled to open the following year, consolidating Franklin and Highland elementaries.

Depending on which of the two options the school board chooses, either 695 or 825 elementary school students would see their assigned school change, out of about 6,000. Smaller numbers of middle and high school students would be affected. Reichardt said the school board hopes to take action on the plans by the end of the current school year, in hopes of giving parents at least a year to prepare.

Some students affected by the changes would be given first priority to open-enroll at schools of their family’s choice, though busing is not provided to students who open-enroll at a school other than the one they are assigned.

Some students, such as those in their last year at a school, could be grandfathered in to stay in their old school.

The LRPC took numerous criteria into consideration when crafting the proposals, said Brian Bostwick, who heads the committee.

“We started with a blank map,” Bostwick said. “We wanted to keep kids in

their neighborhood, of course, but we also tried to avoid having kids crossing major thoroughfares, because those can really slow down buses. We also worked to equalize capacity at different schools, and we even looked as socioeconomic needs so we’re not overburdening some schools with needy kids.”

The district may not be done reshuffling boundaries, however. Robust bond sales following a voter-approved 2018 bond mean the district may have enough money to build another elementary school, said Reichardt, the school board member. The new school would combine East Elementary and Moody Elementary on the Moody campus. The two schools sit just over a mile apart near Bemis Library.

Some parents who attended an open house on the proposals at Newton Middle School on Feb. 12 had reservations about the plans.

“Lots of parents are invested in our schools,” said Lena Samuelson, whose two kids would have to switch from Runyon Elementary to Hopkins.

“We join PTOs. We know the teachers.

We buy houses so our kids can go to school with their friends.”

Samuelson said she wants the boundary changes phased in over several years, so students who start at one school can finish there.

Numerous parents from Bow Mar, at the northwest corner of the district, said they are concerned that the plans

split Bow Mar in two, with the south end of the community continuing to attend Wilder Elementary, and the north end shifted to Centennial Academy, an arts and music-focused school.

“They’re taking our neighborhood school from our neighborhood,” said Dawn Fable, whose three children attend Wilder. “Our kids share sports and extracurricular events. For working parents who can’t drive their kids to school, choicing into Wilder isn’t an option.”

Heather Driscoll said while she technically lives in the boundary for Twain Elementary, she open-enrolls her daughter at Hopkins because her house is on the dividing line and her daughter’s friends attend Hopkins.

“I think those of us who live on dividing lines should be given the option to choose between the two,” Driscoll said.

Some parents saw the new boundaries as a boon.

“We can’t have kids on the bus waiting through four light cycles to get through an intersection,” said Cameron Morgan, who has a child at Littleton High School and another at Newton Middle School. Morgan said her kids would be unaffected by the boundary changes, other than perhaps having to bid farewell to friends whose boundaries change.

“This is hard work,” Morgan said.

“I don’t think there’s a way to please everyone.”

History of first black Arapahoe deputy highlighted Henry Wagoner memorial donated to museum for Black History Month

An activist in the Underground Railroad, anti-slavery writer and prominent Denver businessman became the first black deputy in the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office in 1880, according to the agency.

Henry Wagoner traveled a long road to becoming a law enforcement officer, and his history still makes waves.

In honor of Black History Month, the sheriff ’s office donated a framed memorial of Wagoner to the Black American West Museum and Heritage Center in Denver.

It’s not known how Wagoner, who wore many hats in a life that took him from Maryland to Colorado, decided to work in law enforcement, but his reputation likely played a role.

“He was a prominent citizen and respected member of the black community and the city and county residents as a whole, and as such was probably well known to Sheriff Spangler who appointed him,” said Capt. Ken McKlem, who is known as the Arapahoe sheriff ’s history buff. “He served from 1880-1883, all under Spangler’s term.”

Wagoner was born in 1816 in Hager-

Wagoner stown, Maryland, to a German father and an African-American mother freed from slavery. That’s according to History Colorado, a state agency that houses Colorado’s official historic preservation office.

After working with the Underground Railroad in Baltimore, he headed west and worked as a primary school teacher in Ohio and Missouri, according to History Colorado. In 1843, Wagoner moved to Ontario, Canada, a popular end point of the Underground Railroad. As an active participant in the anti-slavery movement, he met and corresponded with prominent abolitionists and cultivated a close friendship with Frederick Douglass. Over the years, Wagoner also worked as a typesetter and journalist for several anti-slavery newspapers.

Wagoner moved to Denver in 1865, established a number of businesses and came to be known as one of the wealthiest African-Americans in Colorado,

according to History Colorado. He fought for equal access to education for Denver’s black community and taught reading and writing to black adults.

“A firm believer in the principles of democracy, Wagoner was appointed a clerk in the first Colorado Legislature in 1876,” History Colorado’s website says.

Soon after, Wagoner joined the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office in 1880. That same year, the Denver Police Department hired its first black police officer, Isaac Brown, according to the department. At the time, Denver was the seat — the governmental center — of Arapahoe County, and remained so until 1902, according to the county.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office awarded its Meritorious Service Medal posthumously to Wagoner at its awards ceremony, according to a September tweet by the office.

McKlem proposed awarding Wagoner the medal, and the office’s awards committee and Sheriff Tyler Brown

approved it with all other awards for last year’s ceremony, McKlem said.

It’s “similar to how we did posthumous medals for the three line-of-duty deaths from 1889, 1945 and 1983,” which were given a few years before under former Sheriff David Walcher, McKlem said. Usually, several Meritorious Service Medals are awarded per year, he added.

McKlem also proposed donating the memorial of Wagoner to the museum, which he was familiar with through his research on Wagoner. He plays a similar role to Dean Christopherson, a Denver police officer who runs the Denver Police Museum and has researched Denver’s historic black officers.

“If one of us finds a connection to a historic person and then finds a connection to each other’s agencies, we share the lead,” McKlem said.

The new fee schedule, which waives fees for events with less than 150 attendees and tops out at $260 for events with more than 1,000 attendees, came after consultation with community stakeholders and is designed to ensure local events can succeed, Valdez said.

“Our board’s philosophy is our fees should be as close to full cost recovery as possible,” Valdez said. “That includes salary of those performing services, vehicles, fuel, technology and so forth. With these new event fees, we’re only at partial cost recovery, but we want to make sure we’re partnering with the community to meet their needs.”

There were other problems with last year’s Block Party: Reinke chafed at South Metro’s stricter enforcement of fire codes, including requiring a 20-foot-wide right-of-way down Main Street, which Reinke said would have

forced him to eliminate some of the stages used by bands and performers.

Reinke said he’s hopeful he and South Metro can work together this year to lay out the festival.

“I don’t think that’s an issue anymore,” Reinke said.

Valdez said South Metro is bound to enforce city code.

“We don’t have flexibility as to that enforcement, but there are lots of ways to be creative to allow activities to occur,” Valdez said.

Reinke said in 2019 that he and his crew got a late start on permitting the event and had trouble communicating with South Metro. This year he’s set an earlier deadline, and already attended a meeting with South Metro and other local event planners, which he called productive.

“It was a wonderful meeting, and now we both understand where we’re coming from,” Reinke said. “I have high hopes everything will be fine.

County clerk unveils new tools, expanded services System designed to shorten wait times, expand ability to make appointments STAFF REPORT

The Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder’s office has rolled out the Qmatic queue management system in its Littleton, Aurora and Centennial offices.

The new system is designed to help shorten wait times at county offices, and it expands and improves the ability of customers to make appointments for tasks such as driver’s license renewals and passport and marriage license services, according to a news release.

The office also has changed its procedures for individuals who come into county offices to perform a transaction related to a disability plate or placard. These customers will now be automatically prioritized in the service queue upon their arrival, so they do not need to schedule an appointment.

The office also has expanded marriage license services at all metro

offices. Couples who wish to get married can go to Littleton, Centennial or Aurora and get a marriage license recorded and signed, and to get certified copies made, all in a single visit.

In the past, they could only go to a branch and get their license, and then had to follow up later to get it recorded or have copies made.

The Qmatic system identifies bottlenecks and open times at service counters to provide people with better scheduling options by helping them determine when they’re most likely to be able to complete their business more quickly and letting them track this data in real time, the news release said. Qmatic also measures transaction and wait times, which will enable the office to schedule its staff more efficiently.

“We are continually looking for ways to positively impact the customer experience,” Joan Lopez, county clerk and recorder, said in the news release. “These new tools help customers save time and also help our staff be leaner and more efficient. They allow people to make informed choices on when and how they interact with our office.”

District attorney’s office spring session to shed light on judicial process STAFF REPORT

Saturday • March 28 Paramount Theatre

Residents interested in learning more about the judicial process can apply for the 18th Judicial District’s spring citizens academy.

The free, seven-week program takes place from 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays from April 8 to May 20 at the Douglas County office, 4000 Justice Way, Castle Rock.

Each of the seven classes explores the role of various members of the office. The academy gives students an in-depth look at what happens between the time someone is arrested, all the way through trial and conviction.

Attendees will explore the functions of the specialized units in the district attorney’s office, including the special victims unit, economic crimes unit, cold case unit, crime scene investigations, county court and juvenile justice. Students also

will have the chance to learn the intricacies of a jury trial.

Limited spaces are available.

Preference will be given to applicants who live in the 18th Judicial District and are first-time attendees. Participants must be at least 18 years old, complete an application and pass a criminal background check.

Members of the media and family members of employees are welcome to apply.

Noir films are satisfying dark blend

T

he misquote “The stuff that dreams are made of ” concludes what great 1941 noir film?

The answer and some interesting information about the film come later.

Every Sunday in the mid-1970s, a Phoenix televiQUIET sion station showed one of the fourteen DESPERATION Basil RathboneNigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes films.

I was already an avid reader of Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels and short stories and became an avid follower of the filmed versions Craig Marshall as well.

Rathbone’s SherSmith lock Holmes is the superior depiction, although I welcomed Jeremy Brett’s 41 appearances as Holmes for Granada Television between 1984 and 1994.

A weekly film theme has been a Sunday routine ever since cable and

Turner Classic Movies first provided the opportunity to record and save.

I now dedicate each month to one film genre, director, actor or actress.

Noir, silent, screwball, foreign, Hitchcock and Keaton are among them.

And when Sunday is also a snow day and I have no particular place to go, the tubular hound and I spud in front of the television and nod in agreement that there is nothing better.

Certain genres aren’t allowed: excessively violent, super hero, outer space opera, and anything that suffocates in its own special effects.

I have never watched “Gone With the Wind” and other epics, and stay away from certain performers like Jerry Lewis and Charlton Heston, with one exception.

Heston appeared in the Orson Welles’ directed “Touch of Evil,” which features one of the best-known opening sequences in film history: an uninterrupted, tracking shot lasting three minutes and twenty seconds.

I have watched some films more than once. More than twice. More than

He soon joined colleagues calling for an impeachment investigation. In December 2019, he voted to impeach President Trump.

But his job was not done. Rep. Crow was then appointed as one of the impeachment managers to present the case for removal from office to the Senate. Rep. Crow did not seek this honor, he told a group of supporters recently. He knew it would present a burden to his family and staff. They supported him in that tremendous task, and we owe them thanks as well.

While the vote did not go their way, the House managers did their job well.

You wouldn’t believe me if I tried to explain the plot. It’s 59 minutes of wonderful absurdity.

Fields appeared in two of the funniest movies ever made: “The Bank Dick” and “It’s a Gift.”

If I am in any condition to choose, I want “It’s a Gift” to be my final film, before, as it were, the big sleep.

They walk away from encounters motivated to try even harder while thinking of new ways to improve themselves, their business, or their game.

I have made thousands of trips over the years and have sat next to a wide variety of people. Although travel can be a bit tough sometimes, I love and enjoy the people I get to meet. It was part of a slate of several measures that would deny services to LGBTQ Coloradans, all of which effectively had no chance of passing in the Democrat-controlled state House and Senate. Each of those bills was defeated on a 3-6 vote, according to a news blast by House IDemocrats in the early morning -Feb. 14. The vote took place in committee, meaning the bills did not reach a full vote on the House floor.

State House Minority Leader Patrick Neville, R-Castle Rock, and state Rep. Kim Ransom, R-Acres Green, were among the “Live and Let Live” bill’s sponsors.

A prominent LGBTQ advocacy organization dubbed the group of bills “the most aggressive slate of anti-LGBTQ legislation introduced in the past decade.”

“In the first few weeks of this legislative session, we have seen attacks on transgender Coloradans, same-sex parents, LGBTQ youth and the list goes on,” Daniel Ramos, executive director of One Colorado, said in a news release. “These bills do not represent who we are as Coloradans.”

Neville and a House GOP spokesman did not respond to requests for comment.

Meanwhile, a pair of bills pushed by local Denver metro legislators moved forward with bipartisan support. They sought to create a statewide mental health resource website and continue to help small businesses secure government contracts.

House Bill 20-1114 was voted down in the State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee. That body is sometimes called the “kill committee,” where the majority party often sends bills it intends to dispense with early to ensure they don’t meet a full vote of all members on the House floor.

On gay marriage, adoption Under another bill, county clerks could issue marriage licenses and certificates only if the marriage would be between one woman and one man.

That rule would be enforced “regardless of judicial decisions to the contrary,” the bill said, an apparent reference to the Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling that upheld a right to same-sex marriage.

The bill also sought to bar adoption by couples that do not consist of one man and one woman.

Putting resources together A bipartisan bill seeks to create a website with information and internet links to behavioral health care services in each region of the state, according to the Legislature’s site.

The website would include information about Colorado SEE ME — a state ad campaign about support for mental health conditions and substance abuse — along with the national suicide prevention hotline and demographic-specific information about behavioral care providers in each region.

State Rep. Brianna Titone, D-Arvada, is a top sponsor of House Bill 20-1113, which moved forward on

Feb. 5 to the Appropriations Committee.

Small business assistance Currently, the state works with a nonprofit to help small businesses obtain government contracts at the local, state and federal levels — including small businesses owned by women, minorities and veterans.

A bill sponsored by state Rep. Tom Sullivan, a Centennial Democrat, would renew the contract for up to five years, according to the Legislature’s website. The current six-year contract between the state and the nonprofit will expire in September.

The state Legislature, under current law, does not contribute more than $200,000 to the program.

The bill allows the Legislature to increase its contribution as long as the nonprofit contributes a 100% match by soliciting gifts, grants, and donations.

House Bill 20-1116 has bipartisan sponsorship and moved forward Feb. 11 to the Appropriations Committee.

OBITUARIES KOLDEWAY

Catherine (Hoffman) Koldeway Catherine “Kay” M. Koldeway passed away on January 27 at the age of 99. She was a devout Catholic, who was proud of her Irish heritage, and known for her love of family, sense of humor, and love of animals, which started at an early age. She cherished the dogs that were her companions during her long life.

A Colorado native, she was born on Jan. 9, 1921, to Ben and Anna O’Brien, who lived on a small farm just outside of Littleton. At the age of six, Kay attended Fort Logan Elementary School and went to high school in Littleton, where she graduated in 1939.

She found work at Montgomery Wards as a bookkeeper before her marriage. On Oct. 22, 1944, she and Clarence (Clyde) Hoffman were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Littleton. Clyde was serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the war, and Kay traveled with him from base to base until he was stationed in Agra, India. After the war, and especially after retirement, they traveled in the United States, Ireland, Australia, Fiji and other worldwide destinations.

Kay and Clyde started a family and four daughters were born. As Kay raised her children, she also provided bookkeeping for Clyde and his brother’s gas station at Santa Fe Drive and Church Avenue in Littleton. When the girls were grown, she

worked at Bemis Public Library for 10 years. Then, Kay retired to take care of Clyde, who was now retired from Gates Rubber Company and in poor health.

He passed away on Jan. 30, 1997.

They were married for 52 years.

Kay was a life member of St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society and Our Lady of Grace Circle.

On Dec. 26, 1998, Kay married Leonard Koldeway, a lifelong friend, and was welcomed into his family. They were married at St. Louis Catholic Church in Englewood. After a long illness, Leonard passed away on March 24, 2006.

Kay was preceded in death by husbands Clyde Hoffman and Leonard Koldeway and by her parents, sister Mary Hanks, and brother Francis O’Brien. She is survived by four daughters: Priscilla Hoffman, Pat Mauro, Marietta (Steve) Klodt, and Marilyn Hoffman; by grandson John (Amy) Falconetti and great-granddaughters Natalie and Lauren Falconetti; by several nieces and nephews; and three grand-cats and a grandturtle.

Her extended family includes the children of Leonard Koldeway: Pauline (Peter) Hugdahl and Larry (Janice) Koldeway and their families.

“We try to take them to events as much as I can, but the kids at this age don’t pay attention for an hour,” Fernando Barros said.

Following a Jan. 12 sensoryfriendly program at the Lone Tree Arts Center, Barros said he was lucky to be close to the arts center for its regularly scheduled programming of shows open to kids who may need to blurt or move around during a theater show or who have sensitivities to light or sound.

The strict etiquette of theater performances or art galleries can be difficult to follow for people with disabilities or those suffering from memory loss. Throughout Denver, arts and culture venues are offering specialized programs for those who need special attention. “Arts for all” programs give families a place to enjoy the arts without worrying about being a disturbance to others.

“We want families to feel like they have a place to come and feel welcome at the theater,” said Robin Scurto, annual giving director at the Lone Tree Arts Center who oversees the arts-for-all programs. “However they enjoy they arts, they’re allowed to do that.”

A sensory safe place Sensory-friendly programming is the heart of the Lone Tree Arts Center’s “arts for all” initiative. Arts for all programs are becoming more common staples to local arts centers.

Facilities including the Butterfly Pavilion, Denver Aquarium, Denver Museum of Nature & Science and Denver Botanic Gardens offer sensory friendly hours as well.

Low-sensory programming can look different based on the facility. Lone Tree Arts Center hands out fidget objects and a quiet room for kids to cool off if needed. Arts centers in Arvada, Littleton and Parker all have some sensory friendly programming. Many partner with Phamaly Theatre Company, a Denver-based theater group made up of people with disabilities.

Darion Ramos, company production manager at Phamaly, said most low-sensory programs aims to limit surprises, flashing lights and loud noises, for the most part.

everyone is comfortable,” Ramos said. “It feels less intruding if parents take their kids to the sensory-friendly performance.”

Different shows are modified in different ways to accommodate sensitive kids. The house lights are dimmed to half, microphones and sound effects are tempered and families are allowed more space between themselves and others. No clapping is allowed. Instead, the audience is asked to applaud in American Sign Language, which looks similar to jazz hands.

Before the show, actors and any scary characters are introduced. A sensory-friendly guide will assist families in the lobby.

“Bottom line, it’s important to have that space for people so everyone can come out and enjoy theater and be comfortable,” Ramos said. “No matter what’s going on the world, theater is one of those releases … Just because you can’t sit still in your seat or have to make noises and be yourself doesn’t mean you can’ t come to the theater because other people are going to care.”

Tapping into memories Once a week the Colorado Alzheimer’s Association visits with one of 90 arts centers in the state to lead a group of Alzheimer’s patients in watercolor classes. The Memories in the Making

program gives patients the opportunity to express themselves through painting.

“It’s amazing how you see different people’s personal styles come out and the way they move the brush and the color choices they make, how far they go to the edges of the paper,” said Lisa Steffan, Memories in the Making art program coordinator. “There’s a lot of personal expression in the style in the way they work.”

The Memories in the Making program has been offered by the Colorado chapter since 1994. Each week, a group paints in watercolors based on either an image or an object. Painting helps the artists express their emotions or feelings that lead to deep memories. The most important part of the process is the interaction the artist has with one of the group facilitators. Through casual conversation, the artists tap into memories the facilitator will write on the back of each painting.

Artists can take several weeks to finish a single piece, but the end goal is not necessarily the painting. The effects of expressing oneself through painting can last for days at a time, Steffan said.

“We often talk about how it depends on using what they have. Not focusing on what they’ve lost but focusing on what they can still do in the present moment,” Steffan said. “Painting has a soothing quality to it that, once they get started on something and get into a groove, they’re not focused on somebody telling them what to do.”

At a Lone Tree Arts Center Jan. 30 SPARK! event, a partnership program between the Alzheimer’s Association and local art centers, patrons were asked to interpret what they saw in a collection of abstract-realist paintings from the late Joellyn Duesberry, a Denver painter. Some saw a horse’s face in the rocks of a cascading waterfall or dirt mounds from fox holes in a painting of piles of chili peppers in a Peruvian desert. What they saw helped unlock memories from their past.

“You don’t need to remember what you ate for breakfast to be able to look at a painting and have an opinion,” Scurto said.

Animal art brings sense of life to gallery Feb. 21 reception chosen following earlier weather delay

The Littleton Fine Arts Guild postponed its opening reception for the “Animals, Tame and Wild� exhibit due to snow. The reception will now be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 at the Guild’s Depot Art Gallery, 2069 W. Powers Ave., downtown Littleton, in the cozy red gallery that has been home to the guild’s many members for years after really serving the city as a railroad depot.

The building’s busy 19th-century period was followed by a period of sitting alone in what became known as Bega Park, awaiting a new role in Littleton’s scene. The Guild raised

money and obtained a grant in 1976, the Bicentennial year, to restore it and the late Varian Ashbaugh moved the building to its present site north of the Buck Recreation Center — and still near railroad tracks. Members scrubbed and polished and now volunteer to host guests when the gallery is open. (The building is owned by the City of Littleton.)

This animal art exhibit would be an ideal way to introduce children to the many ways an artist can tell a story: watercolors, oils, painted glass, handpainted silk scarves, prints, drawings, bronze sculpture (Forrest Plesko’s “As Good as Gold,�) and combinations of technique. There’s sure more than one way to create an image (and not any particular “right way� to do so).

Members’ entries were juried by Sandra Jean Ceas, whose work will be found just inside the front door. We assume she will attend the rescheduled reception if available. It’s always fun to hear a juror speak about how they

What do they look for? Because the gallery is not very large, one doesn’t find many big artworks here, and the ways in which they are presented and skill with which they are rendered still varies greatly.

An old wooden table in the entry room holds a collection of painted glass vases and other forms, in bright hues — the work of artist Chris Schranck — such as “Fish on Red Vase.� It’s really hard not to stroke these! Also on that table: some delicate fiber baskets, reminiscent of softly hued rag rugs. They are crafted by Kathy Meyers.

Jeff Velarde’s “Made in the Shade,â€? the largest canvas in the exhibit, shows a sunlit terracotta tile floor, with fancy chairs providing shade for the resident fur person. Nice example of painting skill with numerous textures and colors. One would like to stop by for tea in this space ‌ Walk a bit farther and find Carl Paulson’s “Lunch,â€? a bright-eyed critter with a mouth full of green leaves.

On that same theme, several folks sit at an outdoor cafĂŠ are surveyed by a pudgy pooch — “What’s for Lunch?â€?

is Pat Dall’s title. And then, there’s Loren Gilbert’s majestic blue heron wading and obviously searching for the aforementioned lunch.

One thinks of “Lions and tigers and bears ‌ oh my!â€? But here there are also eagles and egrets and elegant blue herons, as well as more than one in-charge sort of domestic feline, mysterious wolves, a roly-poly panda and Joe Bonita’s photograph, “Synthetic Zebra,â€? which stares at the visitor who walks to the back room in the gallery. Nearby is his vision of Serengeti plains in subdued, sun-baked tones.

One imagines it to be full of wild creatures ‌ Jill Quillan contributes a perky “Roadrunnerâ€? as a wall piece, in addition to her brilliantly colored painted silk scarves, which would provide one with a nice pick-up on a wintery day.

Dee Chalkey’s handmade miniature books include vintage images printed on poly clay on the covers. Also in the back room is Karen Shaw’s pleasing monotype print, “Song Birds,� which creates a birdsong in one’s imagination immediately.

Several members create handsome jewelry that might make a new outfit with a favorite dress or jacket — or call for a specific new color to show it at its best. These pieces sell well so there are always new artworks to contemplate when the art lover stops by for a visit. Admission is free.

Tour celebrates centennial of women securing right to vote Colorado Humanities presents portrayal of Jeannette Rankin STAFF REPORT

Actor and scholar Mary Jane Bradbury will portray Jeannette Rankin, the first woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress, at three Denver-area venues as part of a Colorado Humanities tour to celebrate the centennial year of women earning the right to vote in U.S. elections.

This portrayal focuses on Rankin’s rise to political prominence during the volatile political climate of the last years of the suffrage fight and her legacy of courage as a pioneering woman politician.

In partnership with the Center for Colorado Women’s History at History Colorado’s Byers-Evans House Museum, Bemis Public Library, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, Colorado Humanities is proud to present this living history portrayal. Presentations are free or a nominal charge and open to the public. t still is a ways off and has to be approved by the CHSAA Legislative Council during its April meeting, but the hockey committee has recommended the sport be split into two classifications for the 2021-22 season.

The proposal has 20 teams playing in Class 5A and 17 in 4A to try to create better parity in the sport.

There will be three leagues in each class and each loop would play each OVERTIME other twice. The league champion would gain an automatic berth in the state tournament.

There would be 10 teams in the 4A state tourney with the Jim Benton top two teams getting byes.

There would be a 12-team state tournament bracket in 5A with first-round byes for the top four seeded teams.

The proposed 5A league alignments would have Cherry Creek, Regis Jesuit and Heritage in the Metro League. Mountain Vista, Chaparral, Castle View and Valor Christian would be in the South League. Standley Lake would be in the North League.

es, there is still a Puchino participating in athletic endeavors at Littleton High school.

Susie Puchino, a multi-sport soccer and basketball athlete who is currently the best player on the Lions basketball team, is the younger sister of Stephanie, Laura and Katie Puchino, who were standouts on Littleton athletic teams.

“Earlier in my years here at Littleton there was more pressure to play as well as they did,” said Susie. “If someone scored so many points in a season, I had to try to top that. As I’ve gotten older, I have realized we’ve all played different positions and types of games so some of the pressure has let off a little bit.”

So this season in basketball, Susie Puchino is the Lions leader and one of the top defenders in the Jeffco 4A league.

“I have a good mindset to play defensively,” said Susie. “Anyone has the potential to be a good defender if they stay low and move their feet well. I have good bursts of energy to keep up with someone for a couple dribbles because they don’t dribble too much more than that. Consistency is important, and as the game moves on, not being tired, staying low and not going up for fakes.”

Q&A with Puchino Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Julie Ertz, because she has great leadership skills and she always plays so hard no matter who her opponent is.

What would be a perfect performance in your sport?

Knowing my assignment and playing good defense on the other team’s best player, not allowing them to score a lot of points along with having a lot of rebounds and deflections.

What are your habits before shooting a free throw?

I usually do a couple dribbles,

then I spin the ball back to me and then I do a couple more dribbles and then take a breath and be confident that the free throw is going in.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

Science. It works well in my brain and I’ve always liked science.

What are your plans after high school?

Going to Metro State to play soccer and majoring in environmental engineering is the plan right now.

What is your favorite book?

“The Help.” It’s a historical fiction book in the civil rights era.

Moment of silence It only seemed appropriate that a moment of silence was held for my good friend Tom Munds prior to Englewood’s boys basketball game on Feb. 13 against Fort Lupton.

Munds passed away Feb. 6 and I, like the Englewood community he served and wrote about, will miss him.

Long before I started working for Colorado Community Media and would cover events with Munds, I would visit my former dentist’s office in Englewood. I would pick up an Englewood Herald and read stories written by Munds.

He was an icon in Englewood and the south metro area and will be hard to replace. He would always tell me stories about this Englewood meeting or this Pirates coach.

Area swimmers stand out at state Heritage, Regis Jesuit athletes won individual championships

Anna Shaw of Heritage and Sophia Bradac of Regis Jesuit won individual events, while Cherry Creek finished second in the team standings to highlight the performances of south metro athletes at the Class 5A state high school swimming and diving championships.

The competition was held Feb. 13 and 14 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton.

Shaw, who won a state 4A title in the 50 yard freestyle as a freshman in 2018 and was third last season in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles when Heritage moved up a classification, returned to the top of the podium as she won the 5A title in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.99. The junior was second in the 100-yard freestyle and swam legs on two relay teams for the Eagles, who were sixth in the final team standings.

“Looking back on this high school season, I’m really excited how I did,” Shaw said. “It feels good to be a state champion again. I ended on a high note.”

Heritage coach Tom Byorick said

Shaw “can do it all.”

“She has found out a lot about herself in her versatility over the past year,” Byorick said. “I don’t know that she expected it. It is not a surprise for anybody that works with her. But if Anna makes up her mind to do something, she is pretty good at getting it done.”

Bradac, a senior who was the 2019 runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke, was first in the event this year with a time of 1:02.22 and helped the Raiders wind up third in the team standings.

Some of the other notable performances by south metro athletes included: Douglas County junior Margaret Kroening, who was second in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 100 butterfly; Megan Bergstrom, of Arapahoe, was second in the 500-yard freestyle; and Heritage freshman Aislyn Barnett, who was second in the 100 breaststroke.

Lyndsey Wehr, of Arapahoe, was third in the 50 freestyle, and Jada Surrell-Norwood of Regis Jesuit was third in the 100 freestyle.

Cherry Creek, paced by individual finishes from Jenna Smith and Elizabeth Brock, was in contention to win the state title until the final few races.

Fairview wound up with 50 points, compared to five for the Bruins, in the backstroke and went on to win its second state title in a row. Fairview ended with 382.5 points while Creek had 348.

Creek held a slim four-point lead after nine events before the 100 yard backstroke when the Knights grabbed the team lead.

“The backstroke got us,” Craven said. “But we are extremely happy with second. Last year we were fourth, the year before that we were eighth and the year before that we were seventh. I’m very, very happy.

We are a fairly young team, so we are coming up in the right direction.”

Elizabeth Brock of Cherry Creek was fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:06.28 at the 5A girls state swimming championships held Feb. 13-14 at the VMAC.

Wanted: home for towering wooden soldiers Englewood’s ‘Chairman’ hopes someone wants to display massive statues born of vision and built of chairs

Steve Farland’s colossal wooden soldiers need a new home.

Farland is better known as the Chairman. From a cavernous warehouse on Navajo Street, in Englewood’s old industrial district, he sells chairs and barstools, mainly for commercial clients.

There are treasures, too: antique lamps, art pieces, an old hardwood cigar bar, even stained glass from one of Al Capone’s speakeasies.

But in the heart of the warehouse, amid century-old couches, stand the giants: towering statues of mystical soldiers, nearly 30 feet tall, with names like the Guardian, the Sentinel and the Creator — all made of chairs.

With the warehouse soon to be leveled to make way for a five-story apartment building, Farland is hoping someone wants to display the mighty creations.

They came to Farland in a vision decades ago, he said, but not until his family endured a lengthy battle to rescue a loved one did he feel the time was right to build them.

The vision came when he was a young father, visiting the Shafer chair factory in north Denver, before he

became the Chairman.

“I saw this pile of old broken chairs,” Farland said. “I instantly saw the soldiers. It was a holy, spiritual moment. I didn’t tell anyone for more than 20 years.”

Starting with a few chairs he brought home from the Shafer factory, Farland starting dealing in seating, and people started calling him the Chairman. Over the years he’s provided the seats for many of Colorado’s finest restaurants. On his chairs have rested the rear ends of presidents and celebrities.

Then, in 2010, Farland and his wife Barbara faced the daunting task of rescuing her mother Mary, age 95, from neglectful caretakers in New Jersey. As they battled to reclaim Mary’s power of attorney, Farland said he thought, “I’m going to need an army. And God said to me, ‘Build them now.’”

Farland hired Brian Sartor, an artist and sculptor, who turned his vision into reality.

The collection of seven “soldiers of peace” have toured the nation as a collection called “Victory,” under an endeavor Farland and Sartor call “Chairborne Arts.”

Each of the sculptures has a deeper meaning. “Soul Man,” for instance, is

Soon to lose his warehouse space, Farland is seeking a home for all seven of his statues.

“He represents who we really are,” Farland said. “Even the biggest baddest dude is still soul. We look out over the brokenness, and we think, I am part of everything that’s beautiful and everything that’s broken. I am soul.”

After nearly 30 years, the Chairman will likely become a scaled-back, online-only business, Farland said, and amid tight warehouse space in the Denver area, he’s scrambling for a place to go.

He’d rather not see Victory packed up into crates. He’s hoping someone

out there would like to display the giants.

The message of Victory is one of peace and connection, Farland said.

“From these broken pieces, I see a vision of healing,” he said. “There are no unimportant pieces. Little parts hold up big parts. Embrace the brokenness to find what makes us whole.”

With time drawing short, Farland doesn’t know where his soldiers will go next, but he hopes to share them with the world.

“The world needs victory more than ever right now,” he said.

Senior Sarah Sams captured the 185-pound title, which she added to state titles in girls competition she won the past two seasons. She finished her career with a 65-2 record.

Senior Tristan Kelly, who also won her third state title, was the 165-pound champion and she was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the state tournament. Kelly was 55-0 as a high school wrestler.

Sprout wins again Valor Christian senior Cole Sprout has been named the Gatorade Colorado boys cross country runner of the year. It is the third straight year that Sprout, a three-time state cross country champion, has won the award.

Honor roll Each week, performances of South Metro athletes and teams will be high-

lighted. This week’s performances were selected from games, matches, meets held between Feb. 8 and Feb. 13.

Jakob Boos had two goals and two assists for four points to help the Heritage hockey team topple Chatfield, 6-1, on Feb. 8.

Julian Hammond III led four Cherry Creek double-figure scorers with 27 points in a 73-57 boys basketball victory over Arapahoe on Feb. 12.

Valor Christian’s hockey team scored on three of its first five shots on goal in a 3-2 victory over defending state champion Regis Jesuit on Feb. 8.

Junior Sam Hoops scored 17 points and the Lutheran boys basketball team made 59% of its field goal attempts in a 70-43 win over Jefferson Academy on Feb. 13.

Reece Kelly scored 26 points and Ben Bowen added 20 as Mountain Vista’s boys basketball team edged Legend, 72-70 in overtime, on Feb. 11.
