However, there seems to be a misconception about what constitutes a STEM education.

Many families think that if they choose a STEM education, their child will not be proficient or even exposed to the arts, writing, music history, sports and physical education.

This year the school added an elementary school, making it the first K-12 STEM School in Colorado. The elementary school curriculum is highly engaging and rigorous, following the model of the upper school, says Dr. Karen Johnson, the school’s principal. “We also integrate art, music, language and physical education in all of our programs,” adds Dr. Johnson. “We are excited this year to offer Chinese as a language option to even the youngest students.”

Mapleton celebrates achievement inside and outside of the classroom From cheers at DiTirro Stadium to accolades in the classroom, Mapleton Public Schools is piling up the points of pride for the 2016-17 school year.

Five Mapleton schools are celebrating after the Colorado Department of Education released preliminary performance ratings for schools and districts. Welby Community School, Global Campus, Clayton Partnership School and Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts all moved higher on the performance scale and are now rated “performance” which is the highest rating given by the state. Monterey Community School also moved up on the scale and is now rated “improvement.” School ratings are based on how well students performed on state math, social studies, science and English language arts tests.

As a District, Mapleton continues to have a preliminary rating of “accredited with improvement plan.” This rating is based on Mapleton’s overall academic achievement, academic growth and postsecondary and workforce readiness.

“These ratings are another indication of the great work that’s happening in our schools and show that the intentional work is paying off on the part of our students and staff,” said Mapleton Public Schools Superintendent Charlotte Ciancio. “We are always focused on continuous improvement and are thrilled that so many of our students and schools are succeeding.”

More than 100 graduates in Mapleton’s class of 2016 walked across the stage on the field at DiTirro Stadium with both a diploma and college credits in hand.

Building on Mapleton’s college and career-going culture, last year nearly 120 students took classes through Front Range Community College, earning a combined 1,007 college credits. College

courses are made available to students at no charge courtesy of the District’s partnership with Front Range Community College’s College Now program. This program saved last year’s graduates more than $130,000 in tuition, helping to lessen the burden of student loans and tuition expenses that can often prevent a student from achieving his or her post-secondary dreams.

The class of 2016 also earned a recordbreaking $8 million in scholarships. Members of the class are currently attending colleges and universities across the state and country, including, the University of Colorado, Colorado State and several Ivy League schools.

Mapleton’s District Task Force, made up of more than 100 parents, community members, staff and students met throughout the spring of last year to discuss future opportunities for the District. The Task Force outlined several facility and classroom needs necessary to keeping academic achievement on the rise. At the request of the community and the Task Force, Mapleton’s Board of Education has placed two ballot measures on the November ballot that will ensure future generations of Mapleton students have the opportunities and programs that will help them succeed. Ballot measures 3A and 3B will pay for safety and security upgrades to schools, create a high school career and technical program and reinvest in aging facilities, many of which are more than 60 years old. The ballot measures will also unlock a Building Excellent Schools Today matching grant awarded to Mapleton by the state to rebuild Adventure Elementary.

Main Lesson Main lesson is a hallmark of schools guided by the Core Principles of Public Waldorf Education. It is designed to engage students deeply in a theme or area of knowledge specifically geared to their stage of intellectual and social/emotional development.

Every morning, students in grades one to eight have main lesson for two hours with their class teacher. Each main lesson block focuses on a subject for four weeks.

Main Lesson Books Students create their own textbooks, called main lesson books, to artistically express their understanding of the material presented during main lesson by their class teacher. Through the active process of creation, they develop a deeper relationship with what they are learning and strengthen their writing, grammar, art, and handwriting skills.

Experiential Learning Students are actively engaged in every aspect of learning. Teachers use methods that incorporate movement, creative thinking, and an experiential approach. Field trips and overnights provide opportunities for hands-on learning as varied as shearing sheep to make yarn for knitting, or visiting Anasazi ruins to learn about native peoples and shelter building.

Movement Movement, as well as time outdoors, is integrated into lessons, stimulating the

student’s capacity to process information.

For example, students might recite poems while tossing beanbags across a circle, or play rhythmic clapping games while practicing multiplication tables.

Arts-Integrated Curriculum Visual arts, drama, and music are considered a core part of the curriculum and an essential tool for deepening learning.

In preschool through eighth grade, students engage in the arts with their classroom teachers. In grades three to eight, all students also take music and art as special subject classes.

Our commitment to excellence is tied directly to our students – their learning, their skills and their prospects long after they walk across the stage and receive their high school diplomas. That means we’re focused on the world that will await them when they leave district, whether it’s our pre-school and elementary school students or our high school seniors.

The future figures into our everyday decisions in the present. We want to ensure that our graduates leave the Cherry Creek School District with valuable and practical skills; we want to be certain that the learning that takes place in every one of our classrooms will translate into a direct benefit for every one of our students.

Those priorities helped drive Cherry Creek 2021, the initiative initiated in 2015 to update graduation requirements for the class of 2021 and beyond.

The process went deeper than graduation requirements as required by the state – we wanted to finalize a plan that would implement all the proper training, programming and other opportunities to ensure that all of our graduates will be college and career-ready. In community meetings and public forums, we reached out to community members from across our 108 square miles – parents, grandparents, teachers, government officials and administrators.

We also reached out to leaders from the local business community, and their feedback has been invaluable. I’d like to share some of their insights about a rapidly changing world, one where revolutions in technology, information sharing and business culture have redefined the traditional notion of marketable skills.

And that world relies on what were once considered “soft skills,” talents like problem-solving, creativity, innovation and the ability to work on a team. These are the abilities that are prized at a company like Arrow Electronics, the Fortune 500 company based in Centennial.

“Innovation needs to be taught just as specifically as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills,” notes Joe Verrengia, global director of corporate responsibility at Arrow. “Now, the information is ubiquitous; any kid can find out about Ohm’s Law on their phone. It’s what you can do with that information that’s important. We have to focus on teaching people what to do with information, on using their imaginations and innovating.”

He talks about the need for stressing those lessons in our schools, pointing specifically to events like the Cardboard Challenge, an annual Cherry Creek School District and Cherry Creek Schools Foundation event co-sponsored by Arrow that sees students from across grade levels competing to create projects made entirely of cardboard and other recycled materials. Verrengia points to a specific project created by a Cherry Creek School District elementary school student a couple of years ago, a working violin made entirely out of cardboard.

“I can’t imagine what that student will

be able to do in the future,” he notes. “I want her at Arrow.”

The stress on creativity, innovation and teamwork isn’t limited to Arrow, or even the electronics industry. Lisa Jenson, Campus Connections Director for the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, works to connect applicants with a wide range of jobs at the Aurora-based campus. Whether it’s HVAC specialists or pharmacy technicians, Jenson helps qualified, local applicants find careers at the University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, the University of Colorado Anschutz Med Campus and University Physicians Inc. “I would say what I hear most often from the four employers on this campus is the value of customer service skills, of people who take initiative to solve problems and be proactive in figuring out how to make things better. That’s a really important skill,” she insists, adding that these talents don’t only apply to doctors and surgeons. “There are many, many vacancies in HVAC and those industries; also in our pharmacies, in the ophthalmic tech field. A new one on the horizon is ultrasound tech; I’m not even sure if there’s a distinct training program for that yet.”

In a world where new and promising careers are inventing themselves every day, the value of innovation and creativity is paramount. It’s the reason that the Cherry Creek 2021 vision includes offering more opportunities for students to explore their interests and possible career paths as early as sixth grade. It’s the reason our vision for the future allows students to demonstrate competency in multiple ways, not just through standardized tests. It’s the reason we’ve taken a leadership role in working with CareerWise Colorado, a recently launched professional program that seeks to connect 20,000 students with professional internships and apprenticeships in the next few years.

“We’re creating a framework for schools to focus on critical thinking and other 21st-century skills and the foundational competencies so that students are prepared for a youth apprenticeship,” notes Ryan Gensler, marketing manager for Intertech Plastics and director of external affairs for CareerWise Colorado.

“The Cherry Creek School District has been fully on board … they’re allowing students to practice what they’re learning in the classroom. That will help internalize everything that they’re learning. It will give them a set of skills that students who are only taught in the classroom just will not get.”

In other words, we’re connecting our students with the future – right now.
