Trade schools can be a better, more cost-effective option for students after high school

F

or decades, parents saved money to invest in their children’s education. They told their sons and daughters that after high school, college was the best choice. The message became that to truly be successful a student must go on to earn a degree at a four-year institution.

Students were pushed to aim high for the white-collar jobs. Over the years, however, some are finding trade schools can be a better, more cost-effective option for students prone to working with their hands.

Before students and parents rush out to request the brochures and perform the cost analysis for a four-year institution, it might be time to consider the local trade and vocational school options.

Besides tuition rates continually increasing to attend a university, families are finding that trade schools are hands on, allow for more earning potential, and can be a great option for the students who do not perform as well inside a traditional high school or college classroom.

According to educationdata.org, the cost to attend college in the U.S. has tripled over 20 years. According to the data, the average cost of college in the U.S. is $35,720 per year. A private university is $53,949 per academic year.

To fund this education avenue, stu-

dents often take on loans and student debt that is carried out for decades through adulthood.

As the cost per academic year increases for traditional colleges and universities, the rate in which students are completing the four-year degree can sometimes take up to six years, according to education data.

Students can attend a trade or vocational school at a fraction of the cost and finish in less time, according to education data. In some hands-on career fields, the need for workers is in such high demand that students are recruited and paid to work. After finishing vocational school, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates an electrician’s starting salary is just over $60,000 a year.

Following the education received at a trade school, which is one to three years less than a traditional college or institution, job placement assistance is also a benefit of the vocational schools. Vocational schools have a good reputation

for knowing the industries they teach and understanding where the jobs are located.

The success rate for trade schools is high. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about three quarters of all trade school graduates in the U.S. move on to careers related to their field of study, while 41% of recent college grads are either underemployed or working in a job not related to the field of study they paid for.

In some cases, if a student is not quite ready to take the leap and sign into a trade school program, there are options through local community colleges.

Community colleges are notorious for providing classes that can meet prerequisites in the hands-on careers, or in obtaining a more affordable associate degree.

Over the last two decades, certification programs have also become a choice for students looking for an alternative to high-tuition universities.

Career fields to consider that do not require a four-year degree and can be obtained through an associate degree at a community college or a post-secondary certification through a trade/vocation school includes:

Successfully Educating During a Pandemic If Covid-19 showed us anything this past year at American Academy, it is that our students, parents and staff are all very resilient and capable of handling challenges thrown their way. It also showed us that thinking outside of the box (like we’ve been doing since 2005) has paid dividends for our students and their families. Since the pandemic started we have kept our doors open 100% of the time, and our school community has benefited greatly. For the 2020-2021 school year we offered a hybrid model where parents could choose remote or in-person learning. For the 20212022 school year, we went back to full in-person learning, and once again our efforts have paid off. Test scores have increased, student mental health has improved, and our Covid case rates remain low. We are firm believers in parent choice, and are happy to offer our families the choice to wear a mask or not wear a mask while at school. Who We Are and What We Do American Academy is a charter public school (no tuition), and serves Kindergarten through eighth grade at three Douglas County campus locations, and children ages 3-5 at our private pre-schools (KindiePrep). We deliver a solid academic foundation using Core Knowledge curriculum and a STEAM emphasis (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) in a climate of support and student-teacher connectedness. DEEPER LEARNING SCHOOLS PREPARE STUDENTS BETTER FOR COLLEGE, CAREERS, AND LIFE complex question, problem, or challenge.

Deeper Learning in Action Recently, eighth grade students at Renaissance Secondary mastered state content standards and learned problem solving skills through their expedition ‘It’s All Connected.’ Eighth grade teachers collaborated to teach both humanities and science standards by exploring the concept of power.

Students learned about the science of power by designing, building, and testing wind turbines, utilizing the school’s state-of-theart Innovation Lab equipment.

Students also mastered relevant humanities standards as they investigated government policies related to power usage.

The fastest growing job sectors in today’s economy are those that require problem solving and critical thinking skills, yet very few schools are preparing students adequately for these jobs.

A recent national survey published by Achieve, a non-profit education advocacy organization, found that 62% of employers feel that public high schools aren’t adequately preparing graduates for jobs in the modern economy.

Even worse, 78% of college faculty surveyed believe schools aren’t preparing students for college.

According to the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) exam, one in six American students are unable to solve problems that require thinking ahead or applying content knowledge to an unfamiliar setting.

Deeper Learning Schools Focus on Problem Solving A group of innovative schools is aiming to change these dismal statistics by teaching students to think critically and solve complex problems. “Deeper Learning” schools, like the Renaissance schools in Castle Rock, provide research-based instructional practices that foster deeper learning and better outcomes for students. Expeditionary Learning and project-based learning are examples of deeper learning practices in schools.

Renaissance Secondary School, a “deeper learning” school, organizes it’s curriculum through learning expeditions - units of study that allow students to “dig deep” into compelling and relevant topics.

Often interdisciplinary in nature, learning expeditions ensure students gain knowledge and skills by working to investigate and respond to an engaging and

As with many learning expeditions at Renaissance, the ‘It’s All Connected’ expedition concluded with a presentation of learning. Students built communication skills by presenting their final products to community members at a studentled ‘Power Night.’

“Whenever possible, student learning should have an impact beyond the walls of the school.

When students prepare to share their learning with an authentic audience, they’re more invested in creating a high-quality product.

When the learning also benefits the community, we all win,” says Amy Stuart, Head of School at Renaissance Secondary. “When students understand why their learning matters, they’re more engaged…. And research tells us that students retain more of what they learn when they understand the ‘why’ behind it.”

In fact, a growing body of research suggests that deeper learning schools like Renaissance are better at preparing students for college, careers, and life. One study, by the American Institutes for Research, found that deeper learning schools like Renaissance have stronger academic outcomes, better attendance and student behavior, and higher rates of college attendance than more conventional schools.

Learning expeditions at Renaissance are designed to teach the state content standards, but rather than relying on lectures and worksheets, learning expeditions often take students outside of the classroom and/or bring in experts.

Fieldwork may include collecting data, gathering information, or interacting with experts in the field related to their unit of study.

Students at Renaissance regularly engage with the community, including having interviewed residents in an area highly impacted by the I-70 expansion, and with experts, including brain injury and concussion experts, and hearing from judges and other legal professionals. Bringing in experts rather than relying on teacher expertise alone contributes to a rich, authentic understanding of content.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, high school students learning about ecology in the expedition “Fish Stories” extended their learning over Spring Break in Costa Rica. Some students traveled to Costa Rica to engage in realworld work at a research station, in addition to becoming immersed in the language and culture.

“Too often, students experience content at only a surface level.

The real challenge is to teach content in a way that students deeply understand, so that they can apply what they’ve learned in new situations,” explains Ms. Stuart.

Students at Renaissance agree.

Emily K., a 2020 Renaissance graduate, says “After I made the transition to Renaissance, I now know how much school can teach me beyond just the quadratic formula. This school has taught why the quadratic formula works.

It has taught me how school subjects are intertwined and shouldn’t be separated.”

High school students in Renaissance’s “Who Killed Patrick Starr?” expedition walked into their classroom to discover a dead “body,” (a mannequin) on the floor. The makeshift crime scene was taped off, and students had to comb through the evidence to solve the crime. In addition to problem-solving skills, students learn about blood-typing, perform DNA extractions, identify unknown substances, and master other science standards as they work together to analyze evidence.

Colleges Want More Research supports that schools like Renaissance, where students master academic content, communicate and collaborate effectively, think critically, and become lifelong learners, are preparing students for today’s constantly changing workforce.

These schools also provide opportunities for students to distinguish themselves when applying to college. Pairing rigorous academic experiences

with concurrent enrollment courses at local colleges further allow students to graduate not only college ready, but sometimes with a year or more of college credit prior to leaving high school.

Renaissance 2020 graduate Colby C. reported that colleges he visited were thrilled to hear about him attending a small, expeditionary learning high school. Attending a small school dedicated to deeper learning really helped him stand out in the admissions process, where admissions officers are flooded with applicants from large, conventional schools.

Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Yale University, Jeremiah Quinlan, explains: “Yes, we want students who have achieved in and out of the classroom, but we are also looking for things that are harder to quantify, [like] authentic intellectual engagement and a concern for others and the common good.”

Renaissance has a strong focus on service learning. “Service learning at Renaissance teaches students to take action in their communities and the world; it’s an essential component of their school experience,” says Ms. Stuart.

Students and teachers at Renaissance partnered with the Design for Change organization to integrate service into their learning experiences. Students worked on projects related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of 2030, including ‘no poverty,’ ‘life below water’ and ‘zero hunger.’ Some students developed a mental health focused app aligned with the goal of ‘good health and well-being,’ while others wrote, produced, and recorded a song for their project.

Multiple groups from Renaissance were selected to represent the U.S. at the Design for Change Children’s Global Summit in Rome.

STEM School Highlands Ranch: Innovation Starts Here Since our inception in 2011, STEM School Highlands Ranch has set the standard for innovation. A free, public charter school in the Douglas County School District, our school places a high priority on getting technology into the hands of students, while also encouraging collaborative learning.

The Well-Rounded Student

Rating by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE). Approximately 24% of our students are identified as gifted and talented, well above the national average of 6-10% (according to the US Department of Education).

We are also one of seven schools in Colorado approved to offer additional opportunities for students pursuing college courses in the STEM fields. This is an IBM initiative known as P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools), to create innovative partnerships between school districts, local college(s) and high schools.

We also offer a myriad of Advanced Placement classes, as well as Concurrent Enrollment (CE), enabling students to take classes both on and off-campus for college credit, while still enrolled in High School. In the Spring of 2021, we had 537 students enrolled in AP courses and 2345 CE credit hours earned. The success does not stop there as 92% of our seniors applied and were accepted to two-year and four-year Colleges and Universities.

Problem-Based Learning What makes STEM School Highlands Ranch so special? It’s our unique approach to solving real-world problems, while still teaching the fundamentals that all students need to succeed in our ever-changing world. Our students are challenged to develop the essential skills necessary to be productive and valued members of a global workforce.

Elementary School students are provided with a rigorous and relevant core education that taps into the innate curiosity of each student while integrating essential STEM skills and concepts within literacy, mathematics, social studies and science. Our classrooms come alive with relevant, problem-based learning where 21st Century Skills are embedded through the use of technology, critical thinking, and collaboration to engage the heads, hearts and hands of students in

authentic and real-world issues. All elementary students will participate in specials classes that include art, music, physical education, technology, engineering, and world language.

Middle School students are provided with an engaging and empowering education that incorporates essential skills and character development, with rigorous real-world education. Our students are thinkers, doers, change-makers and innovators. They develop the skills of critical thinking, collaboration, safe failure and applied innovation through an exciting and challenging integrated STEM curriculum.

High School students are challenged to develop the essential soft skills necessary to be productive and valued members of the 21st Century workforce. We offer a variety of technology and computer science classes focused on programming in a variety of languages, creative applications like 3D animation/modeling and designing, and building games. Additionally, our students are able to earn industry-level IT certificates by taking classes in A+, Net+, and Security+. In our engineering labs, students fine-tune their problem-solving and creative skills as they take classes in manufacturing, robotics, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), digital electronics, and transportation technologies.

Real-World Application STEM programs continue to become popular choices for students across the country. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts overall employment in the economy to grow by 7.4% between 2016 and 2026, while jobs in STEM fields are expected to grow by 10.8%, according to a January 2019 report. These projections are the highest of all occupations.

Our Career Discovery program offers students a menu of options to explore business fields in real-world settings that can potentially lead to internships, mentorships, apprenticeships, or full/part-time employment after graduation and during college. Through real-world

A DIFFERENT KIND OF JUNGLE

Four guiding principles that have built a unique educational opportunity

by Sophia Krout Jefferson Academy Senior There is just something slightly different about Jefferson Academy, you sense it as soon as you walk in the door. It really isn’t something you can define or even point to, but you know that you have entered a rare school with a unique student body and faculty. Part of what creates that distinctiveness are the four underlying principles that serve as the foundation of the school’s mission: Excellence, Inspiration, Character, and Integrity. They serve to guide all aspects of the community and the relationships that are created, which culminates in a home for all those who choose to join.

EXCELLENCE Imagine the perfect student, straight A’s in college-level courses, varsity positions on the soccer and basketball teams, president of two clubs, a delight to have in class, and entirely impressive. This is not excellence.

High academic achievement, impressive athletic ability, and strong community involvement are all traits that Jefferson Academy (JA) students are proud to have, but what makes a person excellent at JA is so much greater than a report card.

As junior and varsity soccer player Helen Stegner explains it, “Excellence is just holding yourself to the highest standard you possibly can and being able to do the most you can in a positive way.”

Through academics, students are able to foster greater ambition.

“Personally I think academics isn’t what makes somebody excellent. I think...I’ve always seen academics as a curiosity. It doesn’t have to be defined by GPA or just a grade or number, it’s just the drive for curiosity,” says senior Diego Saenz.

Students embody this curiosity in other aspects of their lives and extracurriculars.

“I think it [classwork at JA] makes you strive to be the best you can be, to rise to your fullest potential,” commented freshman Natasha Paul.

Participation and involvement in your community is the foundation of a high-achieving student’s education. The girls soccer team has forged a strong community of underclassmen and older students in order to succeed in athletics.

CHARACTER A good student can be found almost anywhere. Jefferson Academy students are surely academically motivated, but who they are inside and outside of the classroom is much more impressive than their scholarly accomplishments.

“You can be on a sports team, you can be in an academic class, you can take all these classes, you can be in a club, but without character it doesn’t really mean anything if you’re walking around being a jerk to everyone,” says Stegner.

An important part of character is your mindset. Students at JA maintain an open and positive mindset.

“With cross country it just helped me mentally. I used to be like, ‘Oh no, I can’t do this’ and yeah I had a negative mindset, but with cross country it’s really grown my positivity,” says senior Diego Saenz.

In the classroom students learn to work with and support each other.

“If you win a game, or lose a game, your character can be shown through how you react to that,” remarked Gagliano.

Students at Jefferson Academy care about their impact on others. By learning to be the best they can be academically, they also learn how to be the best they can be in the real world.

“The resumé can say a lot about you, but your character overall is what really matters,” says junior Helen Stegner.

Students at Jefferson Academy learn how to be inspired and be self-starters through their courses, athletics, clubs, and artistic ambitions.

“I think drive and hard work are instilled in a lot of the students, and that’s one of the things that keeps me in all the things I do and inspires me to do the things I do every day,” says junior Helen Stegner.

“I feel to be inspired is to be motivated,” commented Gagliano.

“I feel that a lot of the staff and teachers here are really there to inspire you to reach that full potential of yours and actually make you strive for your greatest,” remarked freshman Natasha Paul.

Outside of the school building, students hold themselves accountable for their actions in the world around them.

“I think it means just being responsible with your actions, and realizing that sometimes you might hurt others and you just have to say sorry,” says senior Diego Saenz.

Jefferson Academy students are proud of the things that they do; they work hard for every aspect of personal growth.

“I think that integrity is getting where you are through your own hard work and through your own effort,” stated Gagliano.

Integrity means many different things to Jefferson Academy students, but holding yourself accountable is crucial for each and every student.

“Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody’s watching,” commented JA seventh grader Olivia Burgower.

Conifer High School Conifer High School’s current enrollment for the 2021-22 school year is 830 students. We have 49 certified staff, of which 67% have advanced degrees. Conifer High School offers a variety of classes in 11 subject areas.

Our 23 Advanced Placement and 13 Honors courses continue to grow and provide challenge and rigor to our students’ academic needs. To ensure our students’ successes, Conifer offers many support systems, such as a Learning Center, Guided Study Halls, Targeted Seminars, and other programs that provide students of all levels with additional academic assistance.
