Trade schools prove to be a

WISE investment

Getting a costly college degree isn’t the only choice after high school

A

BY THELMA GRIMES s the cost for a traditional college degree continues to skyrocket, and politicians continue to debate the value of loans and tuition – there are other options for seniors just getting out of high school. In a world where the talk of life after high school seems to focus solely on getting a college degree, many students will agree that college isn’t for them.

For those students, the choice not to attend a fouryear university doesn’t mean failure. There are plenty of options out there to consider. These options center around directemployment degrees with a community college and trade-school programs.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, a degree from a four-year institution will likely cost between $20,000 and $40,000. In Colorado, the average cost for a college degree is upwards of $22,000, and that’s if a student finishes in the four-year time frame.

In 2018, the U.S. amassed $1.6 trillion in student debt, according to the Federal Reserve. On average, four in 10 adults under the age of 30 have accrued some sort of student-loan debt.

For students without a major or direction, without a scholarship or grant, the cost to fund a four-year education can last decades and may not be worth it.

On average, a two-year degree at a community college costs about $3,500. Some of these degrees are also direct-employment programs, meaning they learn on the job with hands-on experience to be work ready by graduation.

For those not cut out for a university, or those looking for careers that are more hands on, trade schools are becoming increasingly popular. In some cases, industries are in such dire need of employees that learning for free, or on the job, is highly probable.

Some of the top trade school programs in Colorado and the U.S. includes a growing need for electricians, contractors, manufacturing, infrastructure and transportation. Many of these jobs require more indepth, on-the-job training than a four-year degree can provide.

vocational school. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an electrician without a four-year degree can make upwards of $50,000, a plumber can make more than $25 an hour, or $53,000 a year.

Computer programming, an industry that continues to be in high demand, can make as much as $40 an hour, averaging $84,000 a year.

In many four-year degree programs, the average starting salary is a lot less than those in the blue-collar industry. In the media industry, the starting salary for a journalist sporting a Bachelor’s degree is around $43,000 a year.

With high student-loan debt, an elementary school teacher makes just over $50,000 a year.

In the end, when considering a future career, it’s important to understand that if it’s something you have dreamed of doing, and it requires a four-year degree, a four-year university may be the best option.

But, if you are looking for a hands-on, technical career, researching trade schools, vocational schools or local community colleges for general education courses may be a wiser investment.

Exciting Improvements Around Our District In 2018, Jefferson County voters passed mill levy override and bond ballot measures to support operations and facility improvements around our district. Four high schools completed design work, 8 schools saw major renovations to track and field facilities, we broke ground at 3 sites, many schools received new modern furniture and playground upgrades, and deferred maintenance projects were completed. We also announced the location of our new career and technical center - Warren Tech South.

With mill levy funding, we have expanded our safety and security supports and continue to serve as a national model for school safety.

These funds have allowed for added staff and security upgrades to many school buildings.

We also increased mental health services, having now staffed every elementary school with a social-emotional learning specialist, in addition to those already staffed at the middle and high school levels. Mill levy funds also allowed a pay increase for staff, which improved our competitiveness with surrounding districts.

Engineering: Various engineering concepts are routinely integrated into BFA’s curriculum. Arts: BFA’s strong art curriculum engages the whole child and fosters high achievement in critical thinking, problem solving and collaborative learning. The music program offers a variety of opportunities for students to showcase their creativity and talent, such as musical performances in front of a live audience and introduction to instruments. Middle school kids have the opportunity to be involved in a full-scale musical production on our beautiful stage, be involved in our choir or take classes on drama/theatre.

Math: BFA primarily uses Saxon Math because its innovative, instructional approach breaks complex concepts into simpler increments that are easier to learn. Research shows that the Saxon approach has produced significantly higher levels of student learning.

STEM School Highlands Ranch: We Will Never Stop Innovating Since its inception in 2011, STEM School Highlands Ranch sets the standard for innovation. A free, public charter school in the Douglas County School District, our school places a high priority on getting technology into the hands of students, while also encouraging collaborative learning.

Serving students in grades kindergarten through senior year, the school offers access to a range of unique learning opportunities that produce students who are ready to compete at the highest levels. Our classrooms are not like the traditional classrooms of the past. Teachers and students work in a collaborative environment to solve real-world problems.

“We believe it is vital that children become excited about learning as soon as possible,” said Dr. Penelope Eucker, Executive Director. “This excitement translates into a lifelong appreciation for STEM that will carve the path for the rest of their education and beyond.”

Our school is one of the few STEM schools that infuse science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning into all aspects of education. In addition to integrated, problem-based learning across all STEM subjects, the school offers rigorous humanities courses, arts, world languages and a theater and music program that was selected as one of the most innovative by the Entertainment Industry Foundation.

“We work very hard to recruit some of the industry’s top talent to come teach our students the real-world tools that they will need to succeed,” said Dr. Leanne Weyman, School Director. “We like to think of ourselves as a think tank, a learning lab and a catalyst for creativity.”

Recovery and Resiliency The events of May 7 will forever leave an imprint on our school, students, families and community. However, the spirit and legacy of our hero Kendrick Castillo provides a light of resiliency for us all as we walk through the stages of recovery. Kendrick embodied what it means to be a STEM Spartan: Honesty, Integrity, Empathy, Respect and Responsibility.

Academic Excellence Since our inception, we have successfully added nine grades over the past seven years, earning Colorado’s highest academic award, the John Irwin Award every year. We are ranked No. 10 in Colorado for the staterequired SAT and our high school is ranked 9th in Colorado by U.S. News and World Report. Our school serves 1,757 students from K-12. Last year, we secured a 95.8% Achievement Rating and an 87% Overall Performance Rating by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE). Approximately 24% of our students are identified as gifted and talented, well above the national average of 6-10% (according to the US Department of Education).

We are also one of seven schools in Colorado approved to offer additional opportunities for students pursuing college courses in the STEM fields. This is an IBM initiative known as P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools), to create innovative partnerships between school districts, local college(s) and high schools.

We also offer a myriad of Advanced Placement classes, as well as Concurrent Enrollment (CE), enabling students to take classes both on and off campus for college credit, while still enrolled in high school.

In the Spring of 2019, we had 400 students enrolled in AP courses and 600 CE credit hours earned, while in the Fall of 2019, we had 634 CE credit hours logged.

The success does not stop there as 87% of our seniors applied and were accepted to over 125 colleges in 35 different states and two countries.

Problem-Based Learning What makes STEM School Highlands Ranch so special? It’s our unique approach to solving real-world problems, while still teaching the fundamentals that all students need to succeed in our ever-changing world.

Our students are challenged to develop the essential skills necessary to be productive and valued members of a global workforce.

Elementary School students are provided with a rigorous and relevant core education that taps into the innate curiosity of each student, while integrating essential STEM skills and concepts within literacy, mathematics, social studies and science.Our classrooms come alive with relevant, problem-based learning where 21st Century Skills are embedded through the use of technology, critical thinking, and collaboration to engage the heads, hearts and hands of students in authentic and real world issues. All elementary students will participate in specials classes that include art, music, physical education, technology, engineering, and world language.

Middle School students are provided with an engaging and empowering education that incorporates essential skills and character development, with rigorous real-world education. Our students are thinkers, doers, change makers and innovators. They develop the skills of critical thinking, collaboration, safe failure and applied innovation through an exciting and challenging integrated STEM curriculum.

High School students are challenged to develop the essential soft skills necessary to be productive and valued members of the 21st Century workforce. We offer a variety of technology and computer science classes focused on programming in a variety of languages, creative applications like 3D animation/modeling and designing, and building games. Additionally our students are able to earn industry level IT certificates by taking classes in A+, Net+, and Security+. In our engineering labs, students fine-tune their problem-solving and creative skills as they take classes in manufacturing, robotics, Computer Aided Design (CAD), digital electronics, and transportation technologies.

Real World Application STEM programs continue to become popular choices for students across the country. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts overall employment in the economy to grow by 7.4% between 2016 and 2026, while jobs in STEM fields are expected to grow by 10.8%, according to a January 2019 report. These projections are the highest of all occupations.

Our Career Discovery program offers students a menu of options to explore business fields in real-world settings that can potentially lead to internships, apprenticeships, or full/ part time employment after graduation and during college. Through realworld experiences, we have worked to bring schools and industry partners from all regions of the state, country and the world together to share education techniques, tactics and ideas.

Our Building Ships program is opening doors for students to connect directly with our industry partners, with short-term immersion opportunities to create connections and get hands-on experience with some of the top technology in the world. Most recently, a select group of students enjoyed a week-long, fully immersive experience with the Junior Space Foundation and Lockheed Martin.

The Well-Rounded Student Learning with us does not stop at the classroom walls. Our students have a full range of Enrichment programming at their fingertips. These opportunities include athletics, clubs, robotics, technology and other special interested. Students are eager to learn even outside the classroom, says Sara Phelps, Enrichment Director. “It’s an opportunity for students to not only discover new areas of learning, but also to make new friends, while developing their teamwork skills.”

In 2018, our Middle and High School Technology Student Association (TSA) finished first in Colorado at the State Finals. TSA is a national organization that gives students the opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering, and math fields through exciting competitive events and leadership opportunities. There are a wide variety of events to prepare and compete in, including Underwater ROV to Biotechnology to Catapult Design to Fashion Design to Forensic Technology to Career Prep.

Our BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) Robotics Team empowers students to use their creativity and intelligence to build a robot from scratch.

This past Fall, our High School team won first place overall at the Front Range BEST competition, while our Middle School team took home third place.

Cyber Patriots is a defensive cyber security competition, where students work in teams to discover vulnerabilities and develop remedies in an operating system that has been compromised.

Five Star Schools, Five Star Choices: District looks ahead to continued success Reaching the end of one decade and embarking on the start of another can generate a variety of thoughts and emotions. Perhaps, it offers a mix of reflection and amazement at the passage of time, but, by the same token, it can bring excitement and even some trepidation about what the decade to come may bring.

For Adams 12 Five Star Schools, there is little room for ambiguity as we embark on the calendar year of 2020 and look ahead to the next decade. The success of the past 10 years is matched only by the enthusiasm and anticipation of the possibilities that lay ahead.

What’s the reason for so much excitement?

• The Five Star District completed the past decade with four consecutive years as a Performance-rated district and its sustained academic growth for the better part of a decade propelled Five Star Schools past demographically-similar districts.

• The district’s graduation rate reached 84.9 percent in 2019 - the highpoint of a nine-year stretch

that saw the number of Five Star students graduating on time climb more than 12 percentage points.

The district also made significant strides in closing the achievement gap between White and Hispanic students and serving other specialized populations.

• Five Star Schools was also boosted by the support of its community through voter approval of its 2016 Bond Program, which has led to new school construction and critical building repairs, and the passage of a 2018 Mill Levy Override, which jump-started the district’s new strategic plan, ELEVATE. Equipped with a clear focus on academic achievement and new resources to support classroom learning, there is reason to be excited for the future.

Begin your college career at Arapahoe Community College. ACC has seven academic pathways for students to explore, connect and succeed. ACC provides an affordable education (lowest tuition among state-funded schools) with instructors who are experts in their field, and with over 100 degrees and certificates to choose from, students will find a focus and stay on track.

Attending community college before transferring to a four-year school is great way to reduce the cost of a college education. In fact, the cost of community college credits can be upwards of 60% less than at four-year universities. This can be a big savings and greatly reduce

the amount of student loan debt.

ACC has online classes and is close to home with campuses in Littleton, Parker and Castle Rock. We provide complimentary FAFSA assistance (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for any college-bound student, as well as guaranteed transfer programs to all fouryear Colorado public institutions.

ACC introduces students to college culture and success strategies with our innovative First-Year Experience program. Academic advising, counseling services, math and writing support centers, peer tutoring and career/transfer services are all available at no cost to students. A wide array of clubs and organizations, as well as the Phi Theta Kappa and NSLS honor societies, provide opportunities to strengthen leadership and enhance scholastic growth. ACC also offers industry apprenticeships, combining customized technical instruction with on-the-job experiential learning.

The Littleton Campus features a fitness center, an Art & Design Center, stateof-the-art science labs, the Colorado Gallery of the Arts and the ACC Library & Learning Commons, where students

In fact, ACC and CSU-Pueblo launched a dual enrollment transfer agreement for Cybersecurity / Secure Software Development offered exclusively at the Sturm Collaboration Campus.

The innovative program focuses on integrating experiential and projectbased learning to provide students with real-world experiences while getting a

head start on their bachelor’s degree.

ACC’s Concurrent Enrollment program paves the way for students to jumpstart their college education by earning high school and college credit simultaneously. Courses are offered at high schools, at ACC campuses, and online. Our Concurrent Enrollment partners include: Cherry Creek Schools, Denver Public Schools, Douglas County School District, Englewood Schools, Jeffco Public Schools, Littleton Public Schools and Sheridan Public Schools.

Meet Dr. Sally Cirincione Dr. Sally Cirincione is the Program Lead of the Outdoor Education program, located on the Lakewood campus of Red Rocks Community College.

Where did you grow up? Where did you study? How did you get your start as an educator?

I grew up in Centennial, Colorado. I went to summer camp growing up and went on backpacking, canoeing, and sailing expeditions. I was a student in a 30-day Outward Bound course when I was 15.

Then I lived in Gunnison, Colorado where I went to Dr. Sally Cirincione school for my undergraduate degree in Business and Recreation. After college I worked as the Event Coordinator for the cities of Crested Butte and Gunnison. I missed working in outdoor leadership so I started working as a field guide for a wilderness therapy company in Utah. At this time I decided to pursue my Master’s degree in Adventure Education and Psychology through Prescott College. Eventually I started working part time for Western Colorado University, teaching classes here and there between everything else I was doing. Eventually I was teaching several classes each semester and was a part of the Recreation and Outdoor Education team. I started working as a field guide for NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) in 2010. I graduated from

Meet Martha Rivero How did you get your start working in this field?

Martha Rivero

Martha Rivero is the Faculty Program Director and Clinical Coordinator of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, located on the Arvada campus of Red Rocks Community College.

Where did you grow up and where did you study?

I grew up in Kansas. In school I really enjoyed all of my science classes. I especially had a strong interest in learning about how the human body works so I knew I wanted to go into the medical field. I researched some possibilities and came across ultrasound. My nearest option was two-and-a-half hours away at Fort Hays State University where I obtained my degree in Sonography. I was in the second class to graduate from their program.

I spent 14 years working in the field.

My first two years were at a major hospital in Wichita, Kansas. From there I spent another five years working in cardiology and picked up cardiac sonography. I then spent another six years working as a traveler in my field – basically contract work for hospitals that needed to fill a sonography position. Overall, I’ve worked in several hospitals throughout Kansas, Colorado, Missouri, Northern California, and Hawaii. My husband and kids will tell you that I have a hard time not staying busy.

How did you transition into higher education?

I came across the posting for a Director in the DMS program here at Red Rocks Community College. I decided to apply as I have always wanted to eventually teach all the knowledge I gained through traveling and working at so many hospitals.

What are the joys and challenges of working with students?

The best thing is knowing the influence you have for those wanting to take on the journey of being a sonographer.

The hardest thing is finding different

CSU in 2015 with an Interdisciplinary Studies PhD. For my dissertation I conducted a research study of an adventure based high school program that made a big difference to me as a student.

Tell us about teaching. What are the joys? What are the challenges?

My students are the absolute best. They are passionate, dedicated, and build an incredible community in the outdoor program. I am constantly amazed by their ability to take on leadership roles to support newer students, push themselves to produce incredible academic work, and their ability to demonstrate professional outdoor leadership. I also really enjoy the people I work with. I’m thrilled to be a part of a community with top notch instructors.

Is there any additional information you would like to share?

In middle school and high school I was not a star student. I struggled a lot with drugs, alcohol, appropriate relationships, and more. I finished the 8th grade with a 0.4 GPA. The only way I was allowed to move onto high school was to be in a special program for the students who were really struggling. I fit right in with them. Students in our program were allowed to take a high school class. I decided to take Adventure 1. Little did I know this class would make an impact on my life. The class did teambuilding activities that helped to build trust, communication, and cohesiveness. I realized the only person who was holding me back from living a happy and productive life was me. I took responsibility for my own actions. I started making positive choices. I took charge to lead the direction of my life. I started doing so well in high school that I had enough credits to graduate a semester early. It was at this point that I decided to dedicate my life to understanding the positive impact outdoor adventure activities can have on young people.

What does it mean to be a member of the RRCC community?

It means being part of a group that welcomes you, respects, and values you for your ideas and work regardless of your cultural background. It also means collaboration; since my first day I have received nothing but help and ideas on how to improve our program. No matter how busy it gets, the people here will make time to help.

Did someone inspire/mentor you?

My family has always been an inspiration. Growing up, my father always said that I had to attend college. It was his dream to attend college but unfortunately he was told he had to work.

He didn’t even get a chance to finish elementary school. At 15 he came to the U.S. He worked, got married, and had a family.

As a child I remember going to community night school classes and helping him learn English as part of his path to citizenship. He always said he came to this country so that he could give his family a better life than what he had. I felt I needed to honor his sacrifice, or at least try. I’ve had doors shut many times

during this journey but I always found different ways to get around them and followed those that were open. It did make the journey longer but that didn’t matter as the destination was still the same.

Is there any additional information you would like to share?

In high school I picked biology and physics as part of my extracurricular courses. I remember getting called into the counselor’s office and being told to sign up for the “easier courses” and that those courses were not required for me to take. I really had to argue that this is what I wanted. At the time I didn’t understand it but at graduation there were only a handful of Latinos who graduated.

In reality, several of my friends dropped out of high school because their parents told them it was okay to do this as long as they got jobs. I often wonder what my life would be like if I had been taught at an early age that college was not an option.

I think it’s important to always seek the positive connections in life. I didn’t get to where I am today without help. If you have a closed door don’t get discouraged or give up. The closed door will actually help you end up on the right path just as long as you keep looking.

Deeper Learning Schools Prepare Students Better For College, Careers, And Life The fastest growing job sectors in today’s economy are those that require problem solving and critical thinking skills, yet very few schools are preparing students adequately for these jobs.

A recent national survey published by Achieve, a non-profit education advocacy organization, found that 62% of employers feel that public high schools aren’t adequately preparing graduates for jobs in the modern economy. Even worse, 78% of college faculty surveyed believe schools aren’t preparing students for college.

According to the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) exam, one in six American students are unable to solve problems that require thinking ahead or applying content knowledge to an unfamiliar setting.

Deeper Learning Schools Focus on Problem Solving A group of innovative schools is aiming to change these dismal statistics by teaching students to think critically and solve complex problems. “Deeper Learning” schools, like the Renaissance schools in Castle Rock, provide researchbased instructional practices that foster deeper learning and better outcomes for students. Expeditionary Learning and project-based learning are examples of deeper learning practices in schools.

Renaissance Secondary School, a “deeper learning” school, organizes it’s curriculum through learning expeditions - units of study that allow students to “dig deep” into compelling and relevant topics. Typically interdisciplinary in nature, learning expeditions ensure students gain knowledge and skills by working to investigate and respond to an engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge.

Deeper Learning in Action Eighth grade students at Renaissance Secondary are learning problem solving skills through their expedition ‘ It’s All Connected,’ where eighth grade teachers collaborate to teach both humanities and science standards by exploring the concept of power.

Students learn about the science of power by designing, building, and testing wind turbines, utilizing the school’s state-of-the-art Innovation Lab equipment. Students also master relevant humanities standards as they investigate government policies related to power usage.

Students may choose to demonstrate their learning by inventing a power saving device that improves people’s lives, or by proposing a revision to existing Castle

Rock public policy related to sustainable power usage. As with most learning expeditions at Renaissance, the ‘It’s All Connected’ expedition concludes with a presentation of learning. Students build communication skills by presenting their final products to community members at a student-led ‘Power Night.’

“Whenever possible, student learning should have an impact beyond the walls of the school. When students prepare to share their learning with an authentic audience, they’re more invested in creating a high-quality product. When the learning also benefits the community, we all win,” says Amy Stuart, Head of School at Renaissance Secondary. “When students understand why their learning matters, they’re more engaged…. And research tells us that students retain more of what they learn when they understand the ‘why’ behind it.”

In fact, a growing body of research suggests that deeper learning schools like Renaissance are better at preparing students for college, careers, and life.

One study, by the American Institutes for Research, found that deeper learning schools like Renaissance have stronger academic outcomes, better attendance and student behavior, and higher rates of college attendance than more traditional schools.

Learning expeditions at Renaissance are designed to teach the state content standards, but rather than relying on lectures and worksheets, learning expeditions often take students outside of the classroom and/or bring in experts.

Fieldwork may include collecting data, gathering information, or interacting with experts in the field related to their unit of study. Students at Renaissance

regularly engage with the community, including having interviewed residents in an area highly impacted by the I-70 expansion, and with experts, including brain injury and concussion experts, and hearing from judges and other legal professionals. Bringing in experts rather than relying on teacher expertise alone contributes to a rich, authentic understanding of content.

Last year, students learning about ecology in the expedition “Fish Stories” extended their learning over Spring Break in Costa Rica. Some students traveled to Costa Rica to engage in real-world work at a research station, in addition to becoming immersed in the language and culture.

“Too often, students experience content at only a surface level. The real challenge is to teach content in a way that students deeply understand, so that they can apply what they’ve learned in new situations,” explains Ms. Stuart.

Students at Renaissance agree. Emily K., a senior at Renaissance, says “After I made the transition to Renaissance, I now know how much school can teach me beyond just the quadratic formula.

This school has taught why the quadratic formula works. It has taught me how school subjects are intertwined and shouldn’t be separated.”

High school students in Renaissance’s “Blood and Guts” expedition walked into their classroom earlier this year to discover a dead “body,” (a mannequin) on the floor. The makeshift crime scene was taped off, and students had to comb through the evidence to solve the crime.

In addition to problem-solving skills, students learned about blood-typing, DNA, identifying unknown substances, and other science standards as they worked together to analyze evidence.

Colleges Want More Research supports that schools like Renaissance, where students master academic content, communicate and collaborate effectively, think critically, and become lifelong learners, are preparing students for today’s constantly changing workforce. These schools also provide opportunities for students to distinguish themselves when applying to college.

Renaissance student Colby C. reported that colleges he visited were thrilled to hear about him attending a small, expeditionary learning school. Attending a small school dedicated to deeper learning really helped him stand out in the admissions process, where admissions officers are flooded with applicants from large, traditional schools.

Dean of Undergraduate Admissions

at Yale University, Jeremiah Quinlan, explains: “Yes, we want students who have achieved in and out of the classroom, but we are also looking for things that are harder to quantify, [like] authentic intellectual engagement and a concern for others and the common good.”

Renaissance has a strong focus on service learning. “Service learning at Renaissance teaches students to take action in their communities and the world; it’s

an essential component of their school experience,” says Ms. Stuart.

Recently, students and teachers at Renaissance partnered with the Design for Change organization to integrate service into their learning experiences. Students worked on projects related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of 2030, including ‘no poverty,’ ‘life below water’ and ‘zero hunger.’ Some students developed a mental health focused app aligned with the goal of ‘good health and well-being,’ while others wrote, produced, and recorded a song for their project. Multiple groups from Renaissance were selected to represent the U.S. at the Design for Change Children’s Global Summit in Rome last November.

Your Investment in Douglas County Schools is Paying Off for Our 68,000 Students focused student programming.

• $7 million is going toward schoollevel funding and is distributed depending on individual school needs, such as increasing funding for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Thanks to the successful passage of the Mill Levy Override and Bond in November 2018, improvements are taking place across the Douglas County School District (DCSD).

The $40 million Mill Levy Override (MLO) is being used for operational needs such as salaries, staffing, and student programming.

• $17 million is being used to make a positive impact on our employees regarding compensation and benefits (excluding Superintendent and Cabinet).

• $6 million is being used to add counselors at the elementary school level, and reduce the middle and high school counselor-to-student ratio. 80 new counselors were hired in DCSD for the 2019-2020 school year.

• Another $2 million of the MLO is being used to increase career and trade

• Finally, more than $8 million was passed through to DCSD charter schools on an equal, per pupil basis.

Charter school leaders have the discretion to use the funds as they wish.

The $250 million bond is providing one-time funds for capital needs including security upgrades, facility repairs, classroom furnishings, buses, and technology. While the face value of the bonds is just under $250 million, based on the credit strength of DCSD and the current interest rate environment, the school district’s bonds generated a premium, resulting in more funding for the school district to address additional capital needs. Total bond proceeds from the general obligation bond sale was approximately $289 million. This does not impact DCSD’s pledge of a no-new-taxes bond.

Improvements at schools made possible by the bond include new flooring, roofing repairs, mechanical controls work, and more.

Examples of work completed to date include: • New flooring at Eagle Ridge Elementary, Castle Rock Middle School, Chaparral High School, Mountain Vista High School, Ponderosa High School, and ThunderRidge High School.

• New roofs at Frontier Valley Elementary, Iron Horse Elementary, Legacy Point Elementary, Meadow View Elementary, Northeast Elementary, Prairie Crossing Elementary, Sagewood Middle School, and Trailblazer Elementary.

• New bleachers at Chaparral High School, Highlands Ranch High School, and ThunderRidge High School.

• New athletic turf at Legend High School.

Much more is still scheduled to come.

Be on the lookout for a new Alternative Education / Innovation Campus in Parker, and a long-awaited expansion at Castle View High School.
