Cyclists hit the road for yearly event Challenges don’t deter volunteers on Bike to Work Day

ust moments after Bike to Work Day station got its blue canopy set up, a short, massive gust of wind blew it all away.

Fifteen minutes later, the canopy, sitting mangled in a white van owned by Douglas County, was no longer usable.

At least by then the wind had died down for Sharon Cunningham and her crew of four for Bike to Work Day on June 26.

The Bike to Work Day snack and water station, set up near the intersection of the E-470 trail and Peoria Street, had to sit the remainder of the afternoon in the sun on the first 90-degree day of the year. But, Cunningham said, the cyclists needed them.

“There aren’t as many stations like these for just water and snacks,” said Cunningham, who works for the county’s traffic division. She added with a laugh: “We’re dedicated!”

About 35,000 people around the Denver metro area, according to pre-event estimates from the Denver Regional Council of Governments, were expected to participated in Bike to Work Day on June 26, a day dedicated to encouraging people to trade their car for a bike during their daily commute.

Bike to Work Day 2019 drew about 35,000 participants this year, according to local event estimates. People came out in droves to support the cause of encouraging alternative forms of transportation. of the E-470 trail and Peoria Street in northern Douglas County run by representatives from the county, were set up throughout the Denver area to serve as pit stops for cyclists on their way to work.

Some stations provided water, snacks and trail maps. The Town of Parker opened a breakfast station for hungry cyclists to stop in for a breakfast burrito and some swag from local businesses.

The day is meant to get people to start thinking about alternative forms of transportation. Many Coloradans already bike to work. Douglas County was recently named the healthiest county in America, according to a 2019 national report from U.S. News and World.

“We have to look at alternative forms of transportation,” Cunningham said.

“People are willing to ride and we’re trying to make it easy for them.”

School safety committees make progress Douglas County commissioners are set to receive recommendation by mid-July

How the Douglas County Board of Education and the Douglas County Board of Commissioners will work together on school safety initiatives in the coming weeks remains unknown, leaders say.

“Until a proposal is made, I really can’t predict the (school board’s) response,” David Ray, president of the board of education, said in an email correspondence. “As has been previously stated, our desire is to maintain a focus on a comprehensive researchbased approach for safe schools, as opposed to implementing random strategies that may be ineffective.”

Time is of the essence for two committees appointed by the board of county commissioners. The committees are charged with making recommendations to the commissioners on how to spend a one-time gift of $10 million for safety initiatives in all Douglas County schools, including charter and private schools. For most Douglas County students, school starts on Aug. 7.

The Physical School Safety & Protection Funding Committee aims to have recommendations in by July 14. The Supportive Mental Health for Students Funding Committee also is working toward a mid-July deadline.

Both committees have one or more Douglas County School District representatives, but the board of county commissioners has authority over how the $10 million is spent.

“This week the BOCC sent a letter to all schools in Douglas County explaining they are eligible to request funding for school safety and mental health resources, via a process that is being finalized,” County Commissioner and Board Chairman Roger Partridge said on behalf of the board of commissioners. “We look forward to receiving each committee’s recommendations and are deeply grateful for the tremendous time commitment of committee appointees for their hard work that we know will lead to great outcomes for children and their families.”

On May 28, three weeks after a school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch that left one student dead and eight others injured, Douglas County commissioners voted to allocate the one-time gift of $10 million, along with an ongoing $3 million to fund 61 school resource officers in the county by the 2021-22 school year, contingent on a $3 million annual match from schools in the county.

Physical safety committee The Physical School Safety & Protection Funding Committee, a mix of law enforcement, school district representatives, parents and security experts, made progress at its second public meeting June 24 at the sheriff ’s substation in Highlands Ranch, 9250 Zotos Drive.

The week prior, members visited neighborhood schools and a charter school, as well as DCSD’s Dispatch Communication Center in Castle Rock.

Common themes that emerged at the meeting were implementing a districtwide closed campus policy, using weapon-detecting technology, training students and staff on better situational awareness, securing buildings’ entryways and utilizing volunteers.

“The goal is to never have the bad guy on campus,” said Clint Dorris, chairman of the Physical School Safety and Protection Funding Committee.

A closed campus policy would prohibit students from leaving campus during lunch or any other time during the school day. Currently, DCSD’s high schools have open campuses for students in 10th through 12th grades.

Ray pointed out that the district had a closed campus policy for high schools years ago.

Speaking for himself, Ray said he sees some “ripple effects” that would

need to be considered if the district were to move in that direction, including the need to change master schedules to minimize open periods, the need for more staffing, increased traffic issues since the entire student body would be coming and leaving school at the same time, and “the counter effect of promoting student independence and responsibility for time management.”

“In addition, there would be a negative impact on local businesses who benefit from students eating lunch off campus,” Ray said by email. “We would definitely want to hear from our students before considering this change in practice.”

Mental health committee The Supportive Mental Health for Students Funding Committee, made up of leaders in mental health, education and the criminal justice system, held its second public meeting on June 28 at the Douglas County Department of Human Services building in Castle Rock.

Members kicked off the meeting with an announcement that they would be working with the University of Colorado Boulder Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence, followed by a presentation on trends specific to Douglas County, including the student-to-mental health professional ratio.

A debate over public funds for private schools Commissioners’ plan calls for millions in spending on security measures

Douglas County’s history with school vouchers

Greg Vigil, chairman of the board at Arma Dei Academy in Highlands Ranch, is brimming with excitement about the Douglas County commissioners’ plans to spend millions of dollars on security measures and mental health programming in local schools.

The commissioners’ plans include a $10 million, one-time offering for physical security and mental health programming in schools, plus an ongoing $3 million — if matched by county schools — that Vigil will help fund school resource officers in the county.

He’s grateful, he said, that the financial offer was made to all school types, including private and faithbased schools like his, which served 210 students in kindergarten through eighth grade last school year.

“All taxpayers in Douglas County are essentially funding that account,”

Vigil said. “Whether their kids go to private school or public school, at least their children are represented in the spending of those funds.”

Not everyone thinks the same way.

The commissioners’ plan for the money, which they approved at a May

28 board meeting in response to the May 7 shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch, immediately sparked debate among citizens and school officials over the ethics and legality of offering public money to private schools.

The debate recalled the battle that ensued in 2011 when a reform-minded school board unsuccessfully tried to implement a voucher system that would have given county residents public money to use toward private school tuition.

County commissioners strongly believe — based on a 2017 U.S. Supreme Court ruling — they can legally offer public money to private schools when it comes to keeping students safe. Douglas County School District officials and some parents adamantly disagreed, saying the proposal is unconstitutional and will lead to a loss of public trust as to how tax revenue is spent. Colorado legal experts say differing interpretations could result in different outcomes on either side of the issue.

Commissioner Roger Partridge, typically a tempered voice on the board, made an impassioned plea following the May 28 meeting against allowing bureaucracy to derail the county’s plan.

“Every student life is precious — doesn’t matter what school type — and every teacher matters,” he said.

“I really hope protecting a student life doesn’t come down to legality, whether it’s a public or private school, because that just disgusts me.”

STEM School Highlands Ranch’s contract was renewed for five years, contingent upon multiple conditions, at a special Douglas County School District Board of Education meeting June 29, a day before the K-12 charter school’s contract was set to expire.

“It feels great,” Penny Eucker, the school’s executive director, said. “I had high confidence we would prevail, but it’s nice to resolve it here.”

The school board had listened to nearly three hours of public comment 11 days earlier as the board considered rescinding a prior three-year contract offer and offering a one-year extension.

The resolution, introduced June 14 and considered at a June 18 board meeting, would have essentially tacked on one year to the school’s current, five-year contract, giving the district more time to address a list of concerns with the charter school that serves roughly 1,800 students and to negotiate a new contract. The resolution said the May 7 school shooting that left one student dead and eight others injured raised questions about the school’s safety and security.

“I would say it’s decided,” she said of the legal questions in a June interview with Colorado Community Media. “Do I believe public dollars should stay in public schools for education? Yes. This is different. This is dollars that are being used to help kids.”

The issue Commissioner Abe Laydon, a land-use and business attorney, said the board consulted with legal counsel before deciding to include private schools in the allocation of money. They believe the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Trinity Lutheran Church v. Comer allows the county to do so.

In that case, Missouri denied a church’s application for a state grant program in 2012 because it was a religious institution. The grant program helped nonprofits resurface playgrounds, but the state’s Constitution prohibited providing grants for churches or entities owned by a church.

Trinity Lutheran sued. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Missouri could not deny the church based solely on its religious affiliation, saying that violated the First Amendment by hindering its free exercise of religion. Legal experts speculated then that the decision would affect policy in other parts of the country on the use of public funds for voucher programs or private schools.

Several local legal experts say the case could be interpreted in various ways to either support or reject Douglas County’s proposal.

Helen Norton, an expert in federal constitutional law at the University of Colorado Law School, said the Trinity Lutheran decision was narrow in scope and not necessarily meant to decide other cases.

The precedent, she said, could apply only to other cases that revolve around competitive state grant programs.

“Is what Douglas County is thinking about similar enough to this? Maybe,” she said.

Associate Professor Ian Farrell, with the Sturm College of Law at the University of Denver, said credible legal challenges could be made and points to Article 9, Section 7 of the state Consitution, which prohibits public aid to private schools and churches.

But “they could say this money is wholly unrelated and will not subsidize or support or give stamp of approval to the religious aspect of the school,” he said. “Therefore, the danger of the state being intertwined or enmeshed in that aspect of the religious school is not a problem.”

School’s Richard Collins, who like Farrell is an expert in state constitutional law, said two provisions in the Colorado Constitution appear to forbid any public subsidy to any private party.

But beginning with decisions in the 1940s, he said, the state Supreme Court “found a dodge around these provisions whenever a government that wants to donate funds has a sufficient public purpose.”

“School safety,” Collins said, “likely qualifies.”

State constitutional provisions do exist that forbid public subsidies to religious entities, making subsidies for religious private schools by Douglas County invalid in the state’s eyes, he said.

But Collins believes the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the Trinity Lutheran case would likely trump the state Constitution.

“Based on that decision, the Colorado ban cannot be applied,” he said, “and the Douglas County plan is, in my opinion, valid for religious schools.”

Cindy Barnard, president of the nonprofit Taxpayers for Public Education, the citizens group that sued the Douglas County School District over its voucher program, agrees the Trinity Lutheran decision supports the commissioners’ view about the proposal’s legality.

She doesn’t believe the proposed money is enough to solve security issues in a county housing the state’s third largest school district. But she’s most concerned with what strings may be attached to the money, and said commissioners should leave decisions on

Valor, which has roughly 1,100 students, already receives public money toward school safety in the form of a school resource officer. The contract between the sheriff ’s office and the school obtained by Colorado Community Media shows that Valor, like public schools in the county, paid about half the cost of an SRO while the county paid the remainder.

Dan Gehrke, executive director of Lutheran High School in Parker, said he’s open to considering the county’s offer but needed to learn more.

He wasn’t sure how the public would view private schools’ use of public funds.

“If it falls under the same ideology of vouchers,” he said, “then certainly there’s going to be issues around it.”

The 525-student private school does not have private armed security or an SRO but works closely with Parker police, Gehrke said, particularly to discuss what they expect response times would be if an emergency takes place.

He said Lutheran follows Douglas County School District safety protocols and is debating if it should hire private security instead of an SRO. Officials at Arma Dei and Parkerbased Southeast Christian School praised the county for acknowledging members of private schools as taxpaying citizens and providing them equal access to the funds.

Vigil emphasizes the school follows the district’s security guidelines and has internal protocols. But he hopes the money could help Arma Dei pay for a school resource officer, which it doesn’t have.

The county money could help Southeast Christian, which had 350 preschool through eighth-grade students in 2018, install new cameras and control access at the buidling’s main door, said Head of School Michelle Davis. She said the school has on-site security daily and

keeps all doors except the main ones locked.

“I think public schools have done a better job of coming together and advocating for equal access in the last few years,” Davis said. “But what I appreciate was that we have leaders who are in place in our county who have a heart for private schools. I think the recognition was that all of us are taxpayers.”

What public schools, parents say Several parents at the May 28 meeting, however, worried about the ethics and legality of providing public funds to private schools.

Kendra Sindelman, who has two sons at Prairie Crossing Elementary in Parker, said the county’s proposal called to mind the school district’s history with vouchers. She doesn’t believe schools that charge tuition should receive public funds.

“I would also ask that you refrain from allocating any funds to private schools,” she said.

A concern for Parker mother Emily Suyat, who has two children who will attend Chaparral High School, is accountability and how to ensure private schools are using the money appropri- i ately. r School board President David Ray d agreed. a “Adding private schools to your f proposal complicates the process, p given that elected officials do not govern these schools, nor are there any M public accountability measure of these R schools,” Ray told commissioners that o o night.

The school district urged the board i s of commissioners to slow down in approving the money at the May 28 meeting, calling the plan hasty and criticizing the makeup of two committees the county was forming, which would recommend how to spend the money. The district felt private schools would receive a disproportionate level of representation on the committees.

But JoeEllen Camden, a former special education teacher from an Illinois school district who spoke May 28, urged the community to put students’ safety first.

“I also completely and totally agree with protecting every child, whether it’s regular schools, charter school, private school — we need to get off that,” she said. “These children are our responsibility and I don’t care what faith, what creed or what color. They’re children.”

Board member Anthony Graziano added: “I would like to call out all the outstanding, great compromises made by all parties, to present a really mutually beneficial resolution and agreement, one that will deliver a full, five-year agreement to the STEM community to improve their financial stability and allow them to continue to achieve their educational achievement objectives.”

“I just want to be really clear that we never had any intention of shutting down this great school,” Lemieux said.

The school’s safety policies have been in the public eye since the May 7 shooting. Two STEM students were arrested on suspicion of carrying out the attack. A private security guard allegedly fired at a Douglas County deputy and wounded a student.

The school did not have a resource officer, insteady employing private security. The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office declined to renew a contract for a resource officer before the 2018-19 school year.

“The biggest thing is that many students don’t know where to begin,” Hayden said.

Stephanie Crawford-Goetz, DCSD’s director of mental health, briefed the committee on current resources the district utilizes, including Sources of Strength, a suicide-prevention program used in most high schools, and Resilient Me, a wellness program for elementary schools. Targeted and intensive intervention efforts include the use of crisis teams and safety assessments.

“I think choice is good, but at this point we really do have our 91 schools doing 91 different things,” CrawfordGoetz said. “And I would really like to have some consistency.”

Local residents who tracked plastic usage for a week find they use more than expected

Bookkeeper Janelle Pedigo, 47, has worried about her plastic use since she was in high school. It’s not unusual to see her walking down the salad-dressing aisle in a grocery store, tapping on bottles to find the ones made of glass.

“Why do I worry?” she said. “Because that single salad-dressing bottle is going to outlast me, my daughter, her daughter, her daughter — and maybe even her daughter.”

Pedigo, who lives in Golden and works in Westminster, was one of 20 adults and teenagers who participated in an infor-

mal Colorado Community Media project to track their single-use plastic usage for a week. The project was part of a look into the local picture of how metro Denver communities are addressing single-use plastics.

After documenting each piece of plastic used — 926 pieces altogether — many found they used much more than expected. Most said the project showed them just how much they rely on plastic in their day-to-day lives.

And interviews with public health, environmental and elected officials revealed that — despite a growing focus on the issue and individual efforts in some communities and organizations — there is no cohesive effort to reduce

single-use plastic.

Plastic is everywhere — in packaging on supermarket shelves, covering products in vending machines, in coffee cups and straws and drink bottles. It holds the kids’ lunch sandwiches and carries home groceries.

The material has become a versatile, easily accessible, inexpensive product that is a substantial part of most people’s everyday lives. The environmental watchdog GreenPeace stated that 330 million metric tons of plastic — more than 661 billion pounds — are produced globally each year, with more than half being classified as single use. Single-use plastic is anything intended to be used once and then

thrown away, such as a straw, a to-go container or a milk jug.

Some participants in the study, who concertedly focus on reducing their use of single-use plastic, agreed that factors such as convenience and lack of other

easily obtainable options often thwarted their good intentions.

about how much plastic she uses in her daily life, was surprised that after a week she had collected nine plastic bottles of water, iced tea and Gatorade, along with 10 small plastic bags, three straws and 13 food wrappers.

“I realized that nearly every food product that I used had some form of plastic, which I never thought about before,” she said. “I probably use a minuscule amount of plastic compared to some other people. If every single person in the U.S. or even the world uses close to this much plastic, it’s almost an unimaginable amount.”

The issue Consider that on average one person in the U.S. uses approximately 346 plastic bottles, 500 straws and 365 plastic bags each year, according to a 2018 National Geographic report.

And 8 million tons of plastic are discarded worldwide into oceans every year, says Plastic Oceans, which works to combat plastic pollution. A pregnant sperm whale, found dead on the coast of Sardinia, Italy, in March, had nearly 50 pounds of plastic in her stomach. She was the fourth whale in 12 months to wash up onshore with ingested plastic waste.

“If current trends continue we will quadruple the amount of plastic we are producing globally by 2050,” said Harlin Savage, communications director from EcoCycle, a Boulder-based recycler dedicated to creating zero-waste communities. Savage helps lead its plastics department. “At that point, if we have done nothing, we will have more plastic by weight than fish in the ocean, which is mind-boggling when you consider how lightweight plastic is.”

The fundamental problem with plastic is that it can’t be reycled in the same way as paper and aluminum.

Very few plastics, industry experts say, are truly recyclable.

“Virtually all of the plasticIDthat we CC 2018 have ever created is still on the Earth Windows in some form because plastic is not truly biodegradable and it is difficult to recycle,” Savage said. “We have a

other situation in that we have become dependent on a lot of plastics and we’ve started to become very indiscriminate on how we use them.”

Most materials recovery facilities, where recyclables are sorted and prepared, are unable to recycle straws, for instance, because they are too small to be sorted, according to For a Strawless Ocean, a national campaign to eliminate the use of plastic straws.

In Denver, the city’s recycling directory instructs residents to not include straws in recycling bins, but rather to throw them out with the trash. Straws, according to Woods Hole Sea Grant, a nonprofit that works to maintain coastal and ocean resources, will sit in landfills for at least 200 years, never degrading completely.

Just 9 percent of plastic produced annually gets recycled, a 2019 report from National Geographic stated. But plastic becomes more downgraded and less functional the more it is recycled.

Unlike paper, aluminum and cardboard, plastic cannot be recycled over and over without losing its structure.

by water treatment plants, according to a study published in the Sociey for Conservation Biology. The Inland Ocean Coalition, a program working to advocate for land-to-sea stewardship, tested Colorado rivers in 2017 and found traces of micro-plastics in Boulder Creek and the South Platte River.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, in an effort to learn how much plastic is never recycled, completed a Waste Composition of Municipal Solid Waste Disposal study in 2018, where it analyzed materials that arrived at landfills statewide.

The study reported 13.2 percent of waste brought to landfills was made up of plastics including bottles, film, bags and wraps.

“We found out that of people who live in a city or town in Colorado, 96 percent of them actually do have access to recycling,” said Wolf Kray, a recycling specialist with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Job No.: 007825 550 Page No. Environment. “So if that many people School to Name:recycling, Castle View High School have access and we still have somewhat of a lower recycling rate, it kind of leads to the question of how many people are participating in actually recycling.”

cept curbside recycling and 25 counties have drop-off recycling options.

Colorado’s recycling efforts rank low, with a 19 percent landfill diversion rate — the amount taken out from landfills to recycle — compared to the national average of 35 percent, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

What some people, places are doing For many at EcoCycle, the answer to reducing plastic use lies with avoiding plastic altogether.

“I’m not an advocate for recycling single-use plastic, because we don’t have ways to do that,” EcoCycle President Judith Wong said. “I think we should not create them in the first place, reducing it out at the source.”

Colorado is one of 10 states with a law — passed in 1993 in Colorado — that prevents local governments from restricting citizens’ use of plastic.

But some local officals and legislators are working to change that.

Susan Lontine, a Democrat who represents state House District 1 in Denver, sponsored a bill in January that would make straws available at restaurants throughout Colorado only upon customer request. The bill went to the House Committe on Energy and Environment in February, but was postponed indefinitely for an amendment to be created that would allow more local control.

‘Is that a sustainable choice and is that healthy for me?’

Those are two questions Jenny Dallman asks when confronted by plastic

“If you’re trying to become more environmentally friendly and cut back on your use,” she said, “you have to understand that pretty much everything has plastic in it.”

For more than 20 years, environmental science teacher Jenny Dallman has devoted herself to living in a way that leaves the least impact on the natural world.

After a week of being a part of an informal Colorado Community Media study that tracked 20 community members’ plastic usage, she was unable to log a single item on her list.

“I honestly don’t use plastic,” Dallman said. “When I go to the grocery store I look at the food I eat and I say to myself, ‘Is that a sustainable choice and is that healthy for me?’ Those are the two questions I ask myself. When I buy vegetables I set them in my cart — I don’t ever put them in plastic. When I purchase anything, I ask myself if I need that item that has plastic around it. I put items I buy in my shirt or carry them in my hands out of the store.”

Dallman teaches aquatic biology and environmental science at Castle View High School in Castle Rock. Her passion to preserve the environment is evident in just about every facet of her life.

She lives with her husband in an eco-friendly home in Sedalia.

The geodesic dome-shaped house is heated from solar water panels and baseboard hot water. The dome provides natural light and windows are carefully placed for passive solar energy retention. She grows vegetables — peas, carrots, onions, garlic, zucchini, cucumbers and herbs — in a pesticide-free garden, where milk jugs have found a second life protecting germinating plants.

Recycled licorice buckets and protein powder containers — some brought in by students and other teachers — are used for class activities. Seeds sprout in smaller containers. Large vines grow from cut-up liter soda bottles.

“I’m one of those people who if I buy something and it’s plastic, I save it … I will find a use for the plastic,” Dallman said. “I keep all single-use plastic. I would never throw it in the trash bin.”

Her environmental beliefs stem from a humble childhood in Alaska and Wisconsin. Her dad was a science teacher, her mother a nurse. They didn’t have much money and gardened and hunted for the family, which also included an older brother and younger sister.

“They both were very conscientious about picking up trash. Whenever we

went camping they would always have garbage bags on them and they would pick up other people’s trash. I learned from a very young age to be conscientious of trash and where it should go,” Dallman said. “My mom would save the big sleeve that bread would come in, and that’s what she would send us to school with our sandwiches in. My grandparensts would save wrapping paper at Christmas from year to year to reuse.”

To Dallman, the biggest issue surrounding the overuse of plastic is related to what she says is America’s materialistic society.

Her travels to Central and South America, which have included student trips to Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands, have shown her how other cultures and people generally live with much less than the average American — and with much more con-

cern for the environment, family and community.

Many in today’s society tend to buy items without thinking about how they will be disposed of, she said. “It goes into a landfill, gets buried and sometimes doesn’t decompose for hundreds or thousands of years. What people don’t understand is that putting it in a landfill is out of sight, out of mind — meaning they don’t think of it when it’s gone from their curb.”

Dallman urges her students to understand how their choices affect the Earth and not allow ignorance to be an excuse.

“Everything is connected on Earth,” she said. “And until we understand it and unless we educate about it, people won’t understand the connection with why single-use plastic can be harmful. ... We have an obligation to Earth and our future generations to take care of it appropriately.”

that believe the bill does not go far enough and from people who advocate for local control and disability advocates,” Lontine said in an email to Colorado Community Media.

Lontine believes the law must be changed to reduce plastic waste. “It takes a thousand years for plastic to decompose,” she said, “and if we don’t do something about it now we are going to be buried in it later.”

Individual efforts are sprouting up.

Across the state, towns such as Breckenridge, Boulder and Aspen are banning or setting fees on plastic bags, although no metro-area cities or counties have passed any similar legislation. More and more restaurants are beginning to follow a national trend of not giving out straws, and coffee shops like Starbucks are providing alternative resuable options to the plastic straw, lid and cup.

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science announced in April that it has eliminated its use of single-use plastics. Aluminum cans, compostable cups and plant-based materials will now be used instead of plastic.

Shocked at usage Many participants in the week-long project found that individual decisions to stop using plastic could help make a difference.

“We as individuals need to reduce what we use and make the effort to use reusable products,” said Amy Vessa, a preschool teacher assistant from Centennial. “It can be as simple

as saying no to plastic utensils at a restaurant, saying no to straws when they are truly not necessary, using a reusable water bottle/thermos or washing utensils (plastic or metal) to be used again. We cannot demand corporations stop producing if we as consumers are not willing to make the sacrifice first and stop using.”

Vessa, who also works as a therapeutic riding instructor for people with disabilities, realized just how much of her plastic usage is “embedded” into her work life, and that there is really no way for her to alter this.

Like Vessa and Prokuski, other participants said they were shocked at the amount of plastic used in one week.

Even those who considered themselves environmentally friendly found that using the material was ultimately unavoidable.

“What surprised me was just how much stuff comes in plastic, especially anything in the bathroom or cleaners for the kitchen,” Englewood resident Jill Bastian said. “I recycle everything. But, jeez, not one container in the bathroom didn’t have plastic.

was something plastic on it — a cap, a nozzle or a pump.”

Sidney Chong, 18, a senior at Kent Denver who used 22 plastic items during the study, a low amount compared to the average, said making a difference requires action.

“I think that it is shockingly easy to forget how much single-use plastic we consume because of the convenience the tool brings into our lives,” she said. “Many people preach ‘save the turtles’ and swear by a straw-less life, which is great. But in reality they are producing so much other waste that such positive thoughts are rendered basically useless.”

“Society gives us so many opportunities to recycle, use certain products instead of others, carpool, gives us quality and ozone warnings. ... For the younger generation to not care about the environment is to just be ignorant of the world around you.”

“Because of how our generation has been brought up, no one cares about the environment or animals because it hasn’t been brought up as a real-world issue.”

Lauren Walter, Centennial Arapahoe High School Used 26 plastic items. She struggled with options for lunches that didn’t come with plastic and felt like she didn’t have another choice than the plastic containers offered at school.

“I think people should be concerned with the amount they use because it can hurt the environment. They should find a way to make plastic friendlier.”

Frank Wilde, Castle Rock Air Force officer Used 29 plastic items, including 10 K-cups and six plastic bags.

“We should reduce and eventually eliminate the use of single-use plastic. If more of it were recyclable or made with recycled material it would be more sustainable. But as of now, we will cover the Earth in plastic someday by continuing the same practices.”

When it comes to love stories, bibliophilia is one for the books

have books on shelves in two rooms that I will never read from cover to cover again. I keep them because they are some of my dearest friends.

QUIET What’s on someone’s bookshelves DESPERATION tells a lot about them, unless they’ve gone out and bought best sellers just to look good; but I guess that tells something about them too.

This is a tribute to books. Hardcovers and paperbacks only.

Craig Marshall I have mentioned my childhood in Ann Smith Arbor, Michigan. It’s where a lot of things happened for the first time, including books.

In the summer when I was between third grade and fourth grade, a little bookmobile came to Burns Park every two weeks, parked in the street, and opened its doors. I don’t know how many books were in it; maybe fewer than what I have on my shelves right now.

I was issued my first identification card ever, and then I looked at all of the covers, and tried my best to make the big decision.

I don’t think I owned a single book until I was in the fifth grade. Whenever I was asked what I wanted for my birthday, I said gloves and bats and balls, not books.

The bookmobile had a couple of books about a detective that a brainy kid named Charles Waldrop told me about. Thanks, Charles.

The detective’s name was Sherlock

Holmes.

The first book I checked out was “The Hound of the Baskervilles.”

Since then, I have read all of the books and short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, and I own nine of the 14 Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes films that were made between 1939 and 1946.

Obviously, that was more than one a year. The quality of the writing and filming, however, is high, and Rathbone’s Holmes has never been surpassed.

My favorite Holmes short story is “The Red-Headed League,” and my favorite Holmes book is my first, “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” partly, I’m sure, because it was my first.

I have all of my nonfiction here in my office, and all of my fiction on shelves in the guest room.

I’ve seen libraries in homes in magazines and movies that I envy, and I’m not even close to those. But when I walk into my small office, and see all of my “friends,” I am in a very special part of the house.

Perhaps my favorites in this room are the biographies and autobiographies. In the guest room, I have a row of Dickens and a row of Doyle, and many of the books I was assigned in college that might have contributed to my disposition. It doesn’t take long to read “The Stranger” by Camus, but it has lasted a lifetime.

I have a book titled “Groucho’s Letters,” and that’s exactly what it is. There’s Dorothy Parker and her contemporary, Fran Lebowitz.

I, as a teacher and parent, appreciate the hard work that has gone into the board of education end statements, new strategic plan and in fixing our district’s infrastructure. I would like to thank the BOE, Superintendent Tucker and the community for all your support.

There is still a lot of work to be done, and teachers and staff would like to take more ownership in that work. This is important, because when educators take ownership in their working conditions, learning conditions for students improve which benefits the entire school community.

This is why, at the June 4 school board meeting, over 70% of teachers (both union members and nonmembers) asked the board to reinstate

a collective bargaining agreement.

A CBA groups all teachers and staff into a collective whole who elect representatives to negotiate working conditions like compensation, class size, professional development, etc. and then the group votes on the final agreement. For over 40 years, Douglas County had a CBA and was a national model of collaboration, which helped us become one of the best school districts in the state.

We are not asking for the moon. We are simply asking for what every other district in the metro area already has... a collaborative voice and a sense of ownership. For these reasons, I ask the community to support our efforts to regain our CBA. It is the right thing to do for our students and district.

And as it has been said before: “Change happens, and it will happen again.” And when we are the ones making the changes, it can be incredibly thrilling and exciting as we prepare mentally and emotionally for those changes. A new start, a new challenge, or a new path in life can really be inspiring.

And as inspiring as beginning something new can be, it can also bring with it a healthy dose of fear.

We are excited, yet we are nervous at WINNING the same time. If WORDS you have decided to make a change or new start, you know what I am talking about. In the end, whether we are absolutely positive and going forward with confidence in our new start, or we are terrified, the Michael Norton change is typically better than we expected and just what we needed.

So what do we do about an unexpected change? Some unexpected changes completely catch us off guard, others we may have expected were coming, and for some unexpected changes, when they happen, we know we should have been the ones who made the change or the decision

in the first place. We waited it out too long, and before we knew it, someone had made the change or decision for us.

When an unexpected change happens that is extremely positive, we tend to become extremely excited and optimistic about what that change could mean. Maybe it’s a job promotion with a higher income, or perhaps it’s finding out we are about to have another grandchild. Maybe we came into an inheritance or won the lottery and our financial future just became a little easier. So many good and positive unexpected changes await us all.

It’s those negative unexpected changes that always seem to feel like a gut punch. These are the kinds of changes that can cause us stress, can destroy our self-confidence, leave us feeling down and lost. An unexpected loss of employment, a diagnosis of an illness, a traumatic injury, the sudden end of a relationship, or an immediate financial hardship. Any of these can bring the strongest of people and families down. Or it can be just the call to action needed to accept the change or deal with the change on our own terms.

If it’s an illness we find the right doctor and fight it. If it’s a job loss, we immediately work through our network to start interviewing, learn

Senior isolation can cause serious health issues

I

t’s an exciting time to be aging!

So many new technologies and services are emerging: from robots that help seniors communicate with family members who live across the country, LIVING & to wearable devices that monitor health AGING WELL conditions. There have been great strides in improving the quality of life as we get older.

But sadly, in the middle of all these innovative designs, isolation is one of the biggest threats Karie Erickson to the health of America’s seniors.

And, although this health risk is not often discussed, at least 25% of

seniors over 65 are impacted. The devastating effects can be felt physically, mentally and emotionally. A study done by AARP revealed that social isolation is as detrimental to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes per day.

Being isolated means you may be cut off from certain benefits and resources that you are eligible for, and that would greatly benefit you.

If you can’t drive, you can’t get to the organizations that can help. Isolated seniors may not visit their doctor regularly or get to the grocery store as often as they’d like due to lack of transportation. Recent Medicare studies show that isolated seniors have an increased risk of high blood pressure, depression, dementia, malnutrition and other harmful health issues. Loneliness carries a higher

decide to thrive instead of taking a dive. No one gets to tell us what we will do next, what we can do or what we can’t do, we get to call the shots.

Again, whether it is a great unexpected change or a difficult one, it’s all about how we choose to respond. It’s about committing to thrive, taking the high road, focusing on the good, and letting go of the bad. It’s about having a strong character and a solid foundation of faith.

How can you help combat isolation?

Reach out and ask — there are many wonderful organizations right here in Douglas County that serve the older community. Connect with your local senior center — there is one in Castle Rock and another in Parker that host a wide range of activities. If you need additional services or don’t know who can help with a specific issue, Aging Resources of Douglas County (ARDC) is a resource center that provides not only programs and services for seniors but also offers information on aging issues and referrals to other professional agencies. The mission of this nonprofit is to help seniors stay independent, in their homes, and engaged in living. Recently ARDC has partnered up with the nonprofit, SECOR Cares, to bring a mobile food market to the rural parts

of the county. Rural outreach efforts also include providing education and information on aging issues, while meeting seniors where they are. Not everyone has access to get into the urban centers where most services are located. And with 82% of Douglas County being rural, this outreach has been very well received.

One of Aging Resources’ newest projects surrounding senior isolation has been to develop an intergenerational program that connects homebound seniors with elementary school classrooms. Teachers sign up to have their students receive a presentation on what it means to get older, and afterward, the children write letters and cards and send artwork to seniors throughout the school year. And the seniors are writing back and forming pen-pal bonds!

CBD unregulated, but vendors undaunted Business grows for sellers of cannabis extract

T

he sign in front of his business is subtle, yet Todd Muck said it can scare people off who are wary of the threeletter abbreviation and its association to the newest extension of the cannabis industry: CBD. Muck is the CEO of Cannabis Bioscience Development in Franktown, a small, second-floor office selling products containing various combinations of cannabinoids purported to have medicinal properties. Cannabinoids are one class of chemical compounds in cells that alter neurotransmitter release in the brain.

Cannabidiol, known better by its abbreviated name CBD — not to be confused with the name of Muck’s storefront — is the most present of the 113 cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Combined with different concentrations of cannabinoids, the oil can be an ingredient for lotion, tincture, body wash, bath bombs, candy, dog treats and numerous other products — all with the claim it can help stop muscle and joint pain, promote muscle relaxation and relieve anxiety, among other things.

Muck, a Nebraska transplant, has bull-riding friends who swear by the oil’s ability to relax years-old pains.

Muck has arthritis, which he said has improved since applying a CBD salve to his hands daily.

Skeptics often point to the possibility of a placebo effect. Muck will then talk about his 14-year-old border collie, which after a regular dosage of CBD, Muck said, “acts like a puppy again.”

“All he knows,” Muck said, “is it’s a treat that makes him feel better.”

CBD is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. However, the FDA has taken notice of its surge in popularity and its alleged health benefits. Now through July 16, the FDA is requesting comment through a public docket to answer questions people have so far. On May 31 the FDA held a hearing to discuss the product.

Most of Muck’s customers are specifically looking for an alternative to marijuana. Though Muck’s products contain, by law, less than 0.3% THC, the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana, the relation and confusion between CBD and THC is enough to keep skittish potential consumers at bay.

Many of Muck’s customers, he said, come to him having been burned before by some products, while others have worked. This dilemma is commonplace for CBD retailers.

Muck can only provide anecdotal evidence on whether his products work. He said he provides test results from each of his products from a third party, which he believes adds cred-

WHAT THE FDA IS DOING On its website, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which does not regulate CBD, recently posted an overview of its approach to the substance. The recent post explains the FDA is looking into the safety of CBD and CBD products.

That includes: • “The effects CBD could cause in the body, such as toxicity to the liver, when someone ingests CBD regularly over a long period of time.”

The webpage also notes that some vendors make misleading or unproven claims about CBD’s effectiveness.

But that’s not the case for every vendor. From consumers’ perspective, there’s no telling what is legitimate.

The FDA says that should it decide to regulate the product, it will likely be easier to differentiate between real and scam products, and the medicinal value of each product.

As an unregulated industry, there is no formal testing required or benchmark to determine one CBD product from another. Some shop owners will have their products tested by a third

party, but scientific proof of the product’s contents is not required.

Given that CBD science is limited, those who sell it must be careful not to allude to it having proven health benefits.

“That’s the one thing we’re careful of, is we’re not telling people ‘this is going to work for you,’” said Rick Morgan, president and manager of Total Beverage, a liquor store in Thornton and Westminster that recently began selling CBD products. “For the most part, our staff just says: ‘This is what

we carry. We don’t know anything about what it can and can’t do. There aren’t studies. If you need more information, the internet is your best spot.’

We’re not pushing people on it. We’re more just trying to answer questions.”

‘One more thing’ Retail stores specializing in CBD products, like Muck’s, are popping up in greater numbers since the start of the year. Colorado has been a leader in the CBD industry for a few years, but it wasn’t until the beginning of this year that CBD became more easily transported throughout the United States.

In June 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex, a prescription CBD solution used for the treatment of seizures.

In December, Congress passed the 2018 Farm Bill, legalizing the extraction of CBD oil from hemp products federally. King Soopers recently announced it would be carrying CBD products in some of its stores.

According to Statista, a consumer data website, the CBD industry generated $512.7 million in nationwide revenue last year. It is projected to generate $813.2 million in 2019 and $1.8 billion by 2022.

Morgan said he had considered putting the product on his company’s shelves for at least two years before deciding to give CBD its own shelf, in place of where the sake and vermouth used to be.

More than 2,000 lavender plants will perfume the air at Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms on July 20, when they are especially celebrated with what is planned to be an annual event — the Lavender Festival.

Loved for hundreds of years for its fragrance, lavender has historically been grown in Provence, France, where fields of it thrive in bright sunshine.

In recent years, Colorado growers — and others in the West — have discovered that lavender responds happily to our dry, sunny days and cool nights, and it is becoming a significant alternate cash crop for some farmers.

Palisade, home to those luscious Colorado peaches, is also experiencing a surge in lavender culture.

We learned from a Colorado Public Radio broadcast from Grand Junction recently that Colorado State University agriculturalists have reached out to area farmers as they expand into lavender culture.

And, looking around the gardens will offer ideas on how to incorporate

lavender plants into home flower beds as well, where they will grow and flower happily year after year.

The grayish leaves and blue/purple blooms blend really well into beds of mixed flowers, as well as reliably returning each year, with a bit of trimming and grooming. Just try to avoid transplanting them once established — they don’t adjust well to being dug out and moved.

While at the venue for the Lavender Festival, visitors can enjoy touring the historic Hildebrand House and other farm buildings, as well as the old school house that was rescued from what is now the bottom of Chatfield Reservoir.

A special dye garden, sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Handweavers, is also located here and one can learn about this traditional craft at a future class, if interested. (We have enjoyed giving hand-dyed fabrics as gifts after purchase from the Handweavers’ annual fall holiday sale in Englewood.)

Also of interest: “One Fell Swoop,” the “Stickwork” sculpture installed this spring, designed by Patrick Dougherty and built from locally harvested saplings of willow, chokecherry and other trees. Kids and their adults will enjoy wandering into this curvy structure. It will remain in place until it deteriorates naturally, Dougherty said. He has created more than 300 of these distinctive pieces internationally.

Medical professionals around the globe are looking to Parker Adventist Hospital for its use of state-of-the-art technology to ensure proper treatment for cancer patients.

Beginning in March, Parker Adventist began implementing facial recognition technology to make sure patients are receiving the exact specifications of their prescribed radiation treatment. SafeRT-ID uses optical imaging to verify a patient’s identity prior to each treatment. It works with existing radiation oncology equipment made by its parent company Vision RT, which uses precision guidance technology — not operated by human touch — to provide radiation treatment and monitor movement with sub-millimeter accuracy.

What exactly does it do? It takes away the risk of a patient getting the treatment prescribed for someone else.

“It eliminates human error,” said Parker Adventist’s director of radiation oncology, Amy Horner.

According to Centura Health, Parker Adventist is the first hospital in the world to use facial recognition for cancer treatment. Horner said representatives from hospitals across the country and the globe have come to Parker to see this technology with their own eyes and determine if it’s viable for their own facility. The only catch, as with any new medical technology, is the price tag. Horner said the whole setup cost about $65,000.

Patients who undergo radiation therapy need a regular, intense

dosage of radiation directly administered to the cancerous area. Each patient has a unique set of specifications for everything from their dosage prescription to their head placement while receiving treatment.

Having a headrest set even one millimeter out of place can have a drastic effect on the placement of the entire body and can lead to mistakes in dosage. Those mistakes are few and far between, but, Horner said, even the slightest change to mitigate human error can make a difference.

“It’s important to the patients’ peace of mind to know they’re getting the best possible treatment,” Horner said.

“To provide that at Parker, it’s huge.

Some patients travel to Mayo Clinic — they travel nationwide for that place they feel will provide the best treatment. And we’ve got it right here.”

Doug Powell of Douglas County finished radiation therapy for prostate cancer near the end of April. He used the facial recognition technology for about the last two months of his total treatment, which began last fall. Powell, 76, an engineer by trade, said he was pragmatic when considering the technology, and said the ease of the whole procedure made him comfortable.

“For two months, it’s five days a week, and by the end you’re just counting down … It’s just a tedious process every day,” Powell said. “I can’t tell you how the peace and calmness and comfort of coming in and working with this crew just makes it easy.”

The new technology, Horner said, is an extension of the hospital’s holistic approach to cancer treatment. The hospital offers everything from radiation therapy to massage treatment for its patients. Having the newest technology adds to that element of comfort doctors try to provide to their patients, Horner said.

14 students appointed to service academies STAFF REPORT

Fourteen students in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District have accepted appointments to U.S. service academies as members of the class of 2023, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Rep. Ken Buck.

Of those 14, seven will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, three will attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, two will attend the U.S. Military Academy, and two will attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

“I’m so proud of these young men and women from Colorado who have committed their lives to protecting this country and accepted the call to duty,” Buck said in the release. “I couldn’t be more confident in our nation’s future because these men and women will be in charge.”

Each year, many applicants request appointments to service academies, but only a few are appointed. The service academies offer students an undergraduate education that integrates academic studies with athletic competition and preparation for military leadership. Students requesting a nomination from Buck are evaluated on a variety of criteria including academic background, physical ability, personal recommendations and an evaluation and ranking by the Academy Selection Board.

“We kind of like to be the person pushing the line,” Morgan said. “It kind of seems like right after we got into that I’ve heard of more and more places that are carrying it.”

There are a myriad of ways to get CBD, including a number of add-ons some stores provide in their products.

You can choose to have a spritz of CBD with your latte or mixed into a superfood smoothie. On certain shelves you can buy CBD popcorn, chewing gum, vape oil and CBD-infused water.

Total Beverage introduced CBD products to its line in February. On half of one wall of an aisle, CBD products, ranging from tincture to salves, line the shelves. So far, the products are selling well, according to Morgan.

And, if it continues, he foresees making even more room for the product.

“Most people seem to like it so far.

They’re already here buying other stuff so it’s one more thing we can offer them,” Morgan said. “It’s still a really small piece of our business, but it’s definitely growing.”

Does it work?

CBD is legal to sell in all but five states in the nation if it contains less than 0.3% THC. There are different spectrums of CBD found in a product that is used for different purposes.

He said CBD can be an effective treatment for a variety of ailments.

Wilder said a high dose of CBD can counteract feelings of being “too high” off THC and is often administered for people who ingest too much THC through overconsumption of marijuana edibles.

“It’s not necessarily that more is better. There’s a balance about it,” Wilder said about CBD. “If you use it at low doses, the body tends to make more receptors for it so it has more of an effect, and you can do that in an ongoing basis. If you do that at a high dose you develop a tolerance … you want to try and hit that sweet spot somewhere in between.”

Muck answers questions from his most skeptical customers with stories

of friends whose vision had improved or had pain controlled using CBD. Prepared with test results of his product’s contents, Muck is confident it works.

Morgan is too, though he doesn’t use it himself. His wife does, and it’s enough to make a believer out of him.

Taylor Hecker, executive assistant for Nature’s Best CBD in Littleton, said the product speaks for itself.

“I’m blessed to be in this industry.

It’s an awesome plant,” Hecker said.

“I’ve had customers come to me crying because they’re in so much pain.

Then they call us a week later crying because they feel better.”

Too often, Muck said, people will come back reporting mixed results from trying CBD. A lot of people can get duped into buying coconut oil or vegetable oil instead from other stores, he said.

“There need to be a lot more studies done,” he said. “But the studies so far have shown overwhelmingly positive effects.”

Julie Nen, who visited Nature’s Best June 24, peppered the sales representative with questions. She had back pain and mixed experiences with using CBD in the past. Yet, here she was again, testing out the powers of the oil. Following one lengthy explanation after another, Nen, palms on the edge of the glass, sighed and said, “Maybe I should just smoke some weed.”

The tincture edible forms of CBD are advertised to not cause any side effects either, other than some nausea if overconsumed, by just about every CBD retailer.

The FDA has said it needs to look at the side effects of the chemical, using

Epidiolex as a yardstick for which to measure the chemical’s potential for regulation. One of those side effects the FDA is exploring is whether CBD can have a potentially harmful effect on the liver.

What’s next?

Muck tends to use the future tense to describe the CBD industry’s promise. It’s going to be big; It’s going to be popular. That’s all contingent, of course, on a widely hoped-for step for the industry: being regulated by the FDA. Wilder agrees there’s a “growing momentum.”

“The issue that raises in turn is the capitalization of cannabis … putting cannabis into a capitalist marketplace so that the processes of industrialization are applied to it, with both the positive and negative effects,” Wilder said.

For now, CBD store owners rely on consumer feedback. Many stores provide no way of knowing how much CBD — if any — a consumer is buying. Salespeople can’t legally make claims about the medicinal properties of the product, but that doesn’t keep some from telling inspirational stories of friends who replaced all their pain medication with CBD products.

“The stigma has been put in on an emotional level over the decades — the ‘devil drug’ and all these visceral things. And the fact that it hasn’t been legalized nationally yet lingers over it — that it’s associated with stoners and hippies and all this,” Wilder said.

“It’s hard to change basic world views.

It takes time.”

Douglas County is updating its vision for transportation

The plan is updated but once a decade, and the time has come again.

Douglas County’s Transportation Master Plan is undergoing a review by county employees and the public before staff hope the update is officially adopted in September. The most recent plan was created to address transportation system needs through 2030 and adopted in 2009. The newest version will look to 2040.

A draft of the 2040 Transportation Master Plan is available online for the public’s review at 2040DougCoTMP.

com. The county is soliciting input through July 22.

“Transportation affects all of us at any age,” said Roger Partridge, chairman of the board of county commissioners. “So, we want to make sure that we are not only providing at the present but planning for the future.”

The document, which serves as a supplemental plan to the county’s Comprehensive Master Plan, identifies where county residents and employees travel most, how road systems coincide with land use and what improvements are needed.

County staff members use that and other insight from the county

demographer — like the fact that 75% of county residents who work travel outside Douglas County for their jobs — according to 2015 U.S. Census data, when planning the county’s long-term transportation goals.

Douglas County’s principal traffic engineer, Kathie Haire, and the director of public works and engineering, Janet Herman, say the areas of greatest need are the county’s areas of high growth, largely northern Douglas County, from Parker to Roxborough.

Herman said roads in that portion of the county will require widening to address issues with congestion.

In addition to identifying needs, the

document also lays out which road projects the county expects to complete by 2040.

Numerous factors go into determining when the county takes a project up. That could be issues with congestion or safety hazards. But it also includes how much right of way the county has already acquired, if funding partners are available and what utilities exist on a project site.

Utilities often need to be relocated to accommodate roadwork and can draw out the project length and cost.

New nonprofit aims to raise LGBTQ visibility in Castle Rock Castle Rock Pride planning festival for August, asks town for proclamation

When Meghan Paul moved to Castle Rock six years ago from Texas, she thought she was the only member of the LGBTQ community in town.

Then she met her now partner, Anya Zavadil, and felt as though there were two.

Like Paul, Zavadil said she struggled finding other LGBTQ community members in Douglas County, first moving to Sedalia in 1994 and graduating from Douglas County High School.

They weren’t the only local LGBTQ community members who felt alone.

After years of feeling like he was “the only gay man that lived” in town, Scott Blaeser finally turned to the website Nextdoor and made a sweeping plea to the community: “Are there any other LGBTQ people in Castle Rock,” he recalled writing.

“That’s moving,” Zavadil said, “when you feel lonely enough that you get on a random social media thing and just see if there’s anyone out there like you.”

“There are so many parents that don’t know other (LGBTQ) people, so they don’t know where to go to get support,” said co-founder Jackie Alderete.

“We are their support. That’s what we do. We bring them in.”

The group banded together approximately a year and a half ago after finding each other on social media. The nonprofit aims to increase the visibility of the LGBTQ community in Castle Rock. They hope that will provide others with resources as they navigate coming out, supporting children who are coming out, search for community

or strive to be an ally.

“We shouldn’t be hiding in the shadows,” said Castle Rock Pride member Heather Gonzales, whose 11-year-old daughter came out as transgender at age 6.

Gonzales said she met numerous families, often in hush-hush meetings at Village Inn or Starbucks, after strangers contacted her by social media. Her daughter’s transition drew neighborhood attention, she said.

“I would literally get messages through Facebook at 10 at night,” she said. “‘I’m scared, can you meet me?’”

The individuals asking to meet were often parents of children who’d recently come out as LGBTQ who didn’t know where turn for resources, she said. They are part of her reason for joining Castle Rock Pride.

The organization has reached 75 members in its closed Facebook group to date. President Kris Trierweiler said she screens people before allowing them in, to ensure members won’t be hassled by anti-LGBTQ individuals.

So far, the nonprofit has hosted happy hours, family outings to brunch and candidate listening session during elections, to name some activities.

Last year they held a picnic in celebration of Pride before officially forming as a nonprofit. They expected roughly a dozen attendees, but more than 70 showed up.

This year they’re planning a festival at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Aug. 24.

There will be live music, children’s activities, activities geared toward teens, keynote speakers and other LGBTQ groups present. As of June, they were expecting 500 attendees.

“This is a pretty family-friendly Pride,” Zavadil said.

Their efforts to increase the LGBTQ presence in town don’t end with a festival.

In early June, members of the group spoke before the town council and urged a proclamation from the town.

That would send a message, they said, that Castle Rock is a safe place for everyone.

The council did not decide on the matter that evening, but a spokeswoman confirmed that councilmembers plan to sign a proclamation at their Aug. 20 meeting a few days ahead of the of the group’s Pride festival although details of what it will declare remain unclear.

Castle Rock Mayor Jason Gray told Colorado Community Media that in the weeks after the meeting the group had met with Mayor Pro Tem Jason Bower, who’s taken the lead on working with the nonprofit for town council, at Gray’s coffee shop, Crowfoot Valley Coffee.

“They’re great,” Gray said. “I think they’re going to be good community partners and they want to work well with us.”

Bower could not be reached for comment, but Castle Rock Pride members commended the town for its speedy response to their request for a proclamation.

In the weeks ahead they’re focused on planning the festival, recruiting volunteers and spreading the word about their organization. They haven’t advertised much, they said, aside from their appearance at town council.

They’ve also emphasized Castle Rock Pride is open to anyone. Members are Democrats, Republicans, independents, LGBTQ community members and allies. Executive director Lisa Scott, an ally, said Castle Rock Pride is a chance for people to show support rather than simply voice it.

“I think the role of an ally is being an active, engaged participant,” she said.

As they group steps out in a historically conservative area, members are braced for opposition to their mission.

“Anytime there’s an event like this you have to anticipate it,” Pride member Jay Winn said of the festival.

The event has rules — any protesters will be asked to leave. The organization’s website, castlerockpride.org, says attendees should not speak poorly of the LGBTQ community or try to recruit people away from it.

“The purpose of this event is to celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and others (LGBT+) community,” the website reads.

Gonzales said opposition is OK, and “to be expected.” Winn said if any does arise it “just draws more reason to why we need to do this.”

Paul and Zavadil said one of the most important aspects of their group will be connecting LGBTQ community members with one another, and to show younger people what community members are like in the real world, not on television or in the media.

“It’s not glamorized, it’s not politicized, it’s just human beings that accept you for who you are,” Zavadil said. “I think it’s so important to see that normal piece.”

RTD has been moving people for 50 years.

To celebrate, the Regional Transportation District will host a 50th anniversary party from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 12 at Union Station Plaza, 17th and Wynkoop in Denver. A special speaking program will start at 2 p.m.

Dig out the bell bottoms, tie dyes and beehive wigs to commemorate the district’s 1969

beginnings. The celebration will include food trucks, a band, giveaways, interactive displays, a commemorative photo booth and more.

The district now has more than 140 local, regional and SkyRide routes serving more than 10,000 bus stops, nine rail lines and 84 Park-n-Rides.

to understand that transportation planning involves numerous agencies and numerous professions to address the needs of mobility,” Partridge said.

Staff relied on software modeling provided by the Denver Regional Council of Governments to analyze current traffic needs and projections for the future.

“The model that’s run is pretty sophisticated,” Herman said. “I would say state of the art.”

The staff will take three to four weeks after July 22 to assess public input on the document and hope to have it before the planning commission, the government body that approves the plan, by September. The plan is approved in one reading and does not go before the board of commissioners for approval.

“The ultimate goal is to get to 2040 and meet our demands that we’ll have in 2040,” Haire said.
