Amid improving COVID-19 rates, the Douglas County School District announced it might return middle and high school students to hybrid learning earlier than planned next semester.

The change in pace comes as the county’s incidence rate per 100,000 people dropped from roughly 830 when the board of education approved a tentative second semester plan on Dec. 10, to under 400 as of Dec. 30.

Interim Superintendent Corey Wise made the announcement in a Dec. 30 letter to the community.

“If we have learned one thing from COVID-19, it is that we need to be flexible with our plans and know that anything can change, based on current circumstances,” Wise said.

Wise said in early December the two-week cumulative incidence rate would be a key data point to watch as the district weighed when to bring secondary students back from remote learning to hybrid.

Former Parker council candidate apologizes for doxxing of health officials Facebook group targeting public health officials deleted within 24 hours

A Parker man who created a Facebook group that encouraged people to go to the homes of public health officials deleted the group and the accompanying post that gave officials’ home addresses from his personal page within 24 hours of posting.

Mark Hall, who is listed as the lead co-chair of the Parker Republicans on their website, posted on his personal profile Dec. 28 calling for people to honk airhorns and car horns outside the homes of two Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment officials, giving their names and home addresses, a practice known as doxxing.

The Parker Republicans “are a group of like-minded conservatives” that holds regular breakfast meet-ups, according to their website.

The post was shared in a Facebook group, created the night of Dec. 28, called “Revolt Against Shutdowns, Big Box Holidays.” It is not clear exactly how much attention the post received, but two prominent elected officials from Douglas County were among those who joined the group.

The group and the post from Hall’s personal profile were deleted shortly after 9News published an article on its website about the doxxing campaign.

Hall’s Facebook post said the two public health officials were among those “putting thousands out of work, killing businesses.”

“Take this information and make your own decisions,” the post said after listing the home addresses of the officials. “Again, I’m not advocating for any violence or physical harm but let them know how you feel.”

Hall also wrote: “Every day in our group I’ll be posting the name and address of unelected, non-law enforcement officers who think they can flex muscles in businesses.

We’ll see how strong they are at their homes.”

Hall — who ran for Parker Town Council in the fall but did not win a seat — posted an apology statement the afternoon of Dec. 29. He later released an official statement: “Last night, I created a personal Facebook post that I came to realize was simply wrong and I apologize for that incredible lapse in judgment and the information has been removed. People and small businesses right now are very passionate and concerned about what’s happening with continued shutdowns and the actions I took were an attempt to express my frustration. But in hindsight, this was a very inappropriate decision. I truly

want people to know my actions were very short sighted and to my friends, family, the employees of CDPHE and the Parker community as a whole, please accept my apology on this matter.”

The Douglas County Republican Party issued a statement on Facebook Dec. 29, distancing itself from Hall and the social media post.

“The Douglas County Republican Party is aware of a recent, inappropriate posting of sensitive information by a Republican in Parker. We understand the individual has removed this information and posted a public apology about it.

“We want to highlight to the public that this person is not a member of the county party’s central committee, and his organization is not affiliated with the Douglas County GOP. Additionally, no member of the Douglas County Central Committee, nor any Republican elected officials in the County was involved in making this post nor are these actions condoned. We do hope the individual understands the severity of their actions and learns from this situation.”

Jennifer Ludwig, deputy director at Tri-County Health Department, said she was thankful the page was deleted before the names of any TriCounty staff were listed.

“It’s very concerning and increases stress levels. Mostly it’s disheartening,” Ludwig said. “We just emailed the entire staff for situational awareness and safety measures they need to continue to follow.”

As first reported by 9News, Parker Mayor Jeff Toborg confirmed he had joined the group, but said he did so without careful consideration and that he was not actively involved.

Douglas County Commissioner Lora Thomas also confirmed she joined the group.

“In my role as commissioner it’s important for me to know what’s going in the community, so when I received an invite to this group run by Mark Hall, I know Mark, so I accepted the invite to the group,” Thomas told Colorado Community Media, adding that she had “not even seen the post” and “had nothing to do with it.”

Thomas said she does not approve of doxxing.

“Posting (the officials’) personal addresses is not acceptable,” Thomas said.

On Dec. 31, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock sent a statement to Colorado Community Media via email addressing the matter.

“While I feel doxxing is completely inappropriate and I don’t condone this behavior, my office in conjunction with the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office reviewed all the information available to us and have determined there was no crime committed,” he wrote. “Our office continues to work closely with CDPHE and Tri-County Health Department to ensure the health and safety of all our citizens.”

Waid, 47, chose not to seek reelection in 2020 despite being eligible to serve another four years at the dais, citing his belief against career politicians. He said his goodbyes as mayor of Parker on Dec. 14.

Waid served eight years as mayor, preceded by four years as a councilmember and, before that, five years on the special licensing authority, three as its chair.

Waid led the town through substantial growth, often being forced to play peacemaker during public debates.

A popular Parker entrepreneur prior to running for office, Waid stood out in his own right as a different kind of conservative maverick — one who wears flannel, has a long beard, ear piercings and tattoos, and disdains typical politicians.

Those close to him say there is little difference between the mayor people saw on-stage at the annual tree-lighting ceremony and the man they see driving around town in his black Jeep. Waid wore many hats, costumes and haircuts to fulfill the role as the people’s mayor of Parker — “just a regular guy,” he says.

Waid is famous for ad-libbing most of the speeches he gave as mayor. He is prone to slip into a long anecdote to explain a point or get a laugh whenever he is behind a microphone. Storytelling is how he communicates with the world.

The chilling wind and disappearing sun at O’Brien Park on Nov. 19 did not slow down Waid’s litany of stories as he reflected on the lessons he learned serving Parker.

“You know me, I love telling stories,” Waid said, “so just tell me when to shut up.”

‘When do I start?’

Today, Waid works as an IT director for Champion Bank, a job he started in August.

Waid began his working career as an entrepreneur with a photography business he started at age 14.

He and his wife, Pam, met while attending El Dorado High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He pursued a degree in political science and a minor in economics — “because that was the easiest way out of college,” he said. He recalled a guidance counselor who recommended the major after reviewing the hodgepodge list of credits on his transcript.

“She could’ve said accounting, underwater basket-weaving — whatever, and I would’ve done it,” Waid said. “It wasn’t necessarily a passion per se, but it coincided with how I enjoyed entrepreneurship and my experience in it.”

Waid came to Colorado in 1997, pursuing his wife’s dream to be a veterinarian. The couple had both finished with undergraduate degrees from the University of New Mexico and made a life in Fort Collins. Pam waited to be accepted into Colorado State University’s vet program. Mike, meanwhile, looked for a job wherever he could find one.

Prior to moving, Waid found a list of the top 100 employers in Fort Collins at the library. He started calling each company, starting from the top of the list. The first five did not pick up. His sixth call was to the Colora-

stopped at the businesses … and the Quonset hut was like a death trap.”

Regardless, Waid felt an immediate sense of home at Parker Days, watching Christopher at the petting zoo, and staying for lunch at the Warhorse Inn, a now-closed restaurant in downtown Parker. This was nothing like the tough, crime-ridden Albuquerque neighborhood he grew up in, or a bustling college town.

“This quaint, small, hometown feel,” Waid recalled from that day at Parker Days. “This is amazing. This is home.”

Creating a buzz

doan, the local newspaper. He spoke to a woman named Jean in human resources and made a promise to be the best employee they had ever had. The woman told him they were not hiring.

“I hear what you’re saying, Jean,” Waid recalled his 23-year-old-self telling the woman over the phone.

“But, trust me, you’re not going to want to miss me.’”

Waid followed up on his promise when he and his wife visited Fort Collins a week later. He went to the office and shook Jean’s hand. Jean told Waid to wait as she walked the entire facility, department by department, looking for an opening.

She finally found one. Waid took the job before she could get the words out of her mouth. “‘It doesn’t matter,’” he said to her. “I will do it better than anyone you’ve ever hired. So, when do I start?”

‘This is home’

Waid worked as an ad salesman for the Coloradoan. He left two years later to start his own ad agency, Image Design Group, specializing in small business marketing and advertising. He taught himself web and graphic design in the early days of the internet. He partnered with the Denver Dumb Friends League and built an online database for adoption pets, allowing potential adopters to view photos of available

pets online.

After about a year, Waid left his company, which had by then been acquired by a company called Project Works. He started a new job in Denver working for a telecommunication software company and began commuting daily from Fort Collins.

The couple dreamed of buying a house in the Parker/Highlands Ranch area but, in 2000, could not afford to live there. In a last-minute effort to avoid becoming homeless, after a deal on a house in Aurora fell through, the Waids found a fixerupper in the Cottonwood neighborhood of Parker in their price range.

At the time, they had one son, Christopher. Their second son, Matthew, was born shortly after they moved to Parker.

Waid’s first and fondest memory of Parker is one that thousands have likely heard before in his State of the Town speeches or casual, off-thecuff addresses. He ventured downtown with his family in the first week of June, during Parker Days.

Waid remembers when O’Brien Park was an empty lot, home to a Quonset hut that was the Parker Police Department’s headquarters until 2010.

“O’Brien Park used to be a dump,” Waid said, reflecting on the origins of the iconic gazebo, a Rotary club effort, and the revitalization of Parker’s downtown. “Mainstreet was like a two-lane highway. Nobody

“You were never going to just pop into the office,” said Tiffany Grizzle, a former employee and longtime friend of Waid’s. “If you were going to talk to Mike, you were going to be there for a while, and it’s going to be time well-spent.”

From an office on Mainstreet for most of the 2000s and 2010s, Waid ran a line of local business and entertainment magazines from Aurora to Castle Rock, each titled “Search.”

Grizzle wrote freelance articles and sold ads for several of the magazines. She described working under Waid as a one-of-a-kind experience.

“Still to this day … it’s almost there’s like a buzzing-ness around him,” Grizzle said.

His office usually a chaotic mess, Waid was at his best under pressure, Grizzle recalled.

“He almost has childlike-wonder goggles on,” Grizzle said. “He looks at everything with a sense of positivity and wonder that’s amazing.”

The mayor

Alicia Pope knew it would be hard to see her friend subjected to public scrutiny when he decided to run for mayor in 2012. But she could not think of anyone better suited for it.

Waid was nearing the end of his first term as a councilmember. He was lovable, charming and relished giving big speeches, she recalled.

“The Town of Parker has been through some crazy things in the last eight years, that’s for sure,” Pope said. “I can’t imagine someone SEE WAID, P5

who cared as much for the town and managed it in quite the ways he had.”

Pope, a 20-year Parker resident, knew Waid before he was elected mayor. A family friend since the Waids moved to Parker, Pope maintains that there is little difference between who people saw as Mayor Mike Waid and the man.

“He doesn’t pretend to be anyone different than who he is: A bighearted guy who cares deeply about everything,” Pope said.

Waid started his mayoral tenure puzzled at his newly elected role.

The Town of Parker’s municipal code’s only stated requirement for the mayor is that he or she be present in town at least once every 90 days. The mayor does not vote on town council matters and, for the most part, facilitates discussion among the public, town staff and elected leaders.

“All people knew about a mayor is what they see on TV or whatever sitcom they’re watching, and (there) the mayor is a CEO of an organization and the mayor hires and fires,” said former Councilmember Joshua Rivero, who served alongside Waid since 2012. “Mike was very good at personalizing the role.”

Waid quickly became known for his hearty, improvised speeches, appearances at local schools, his approachable demeanor — and sometimes by his brightly colored hair.

Four months after taking his oath, Waid founded the “Shave the Mayor” event in partnership with

the annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser for cancer research.

Waid has made “Shave the Mayor” its own spectacle, upping the stakes by offering the largest donor to his fundraiser to choose a color he would dye his hair two weeks before the event. His hair has been blueand-orange, purple and rainbowcolored.

Toward the end of his tenure, Waid used Facebook Live videos to keep people informed of COVID-19 updates during the height of the pandemic. By the time he left office, Rivero credited Waid with improving public engagement through education.

“He could be a college professor,” Rivero added.

One of Waid’s early tests to his wide-open persona came when he received a call from Ralph Neumann in 2015, asking if Waid was interested in performing in an upcoming production of “West Side Story” at the Parker Arts, Culture and Events Center. Waid accepted, wanting to demonstrate that the role of mayor is nothing special.

“I’m just an average guy who happened to be in the right place in the right time who won a popularity contest,” Waid said. “I did a lot of soul-searching and said ‘I need to use this role to have a positive impact on people I never meet.’ ” Rachel Carter, a professional ballet dancer and teacher, later recruited Waid to be her dance partner in the annual Parker “Nutcracker.”

“It scared him to death to get into theater, but he had no regrets,” Carter said. Waid is not a great

dancer, she admitted, but he more than makes up for it with his ability to engage with the audience.

“He is so likable, he’s just genuinely nice, and I think people can sense that when he’s on stage,” Carter said. “He’s just genuine.”

His first performance hooked him for life. He performed in “Spamalot,” “Sister Act,” “Footloose,” “Newsies,” “The Nutcracker” and “The Full Monty” at the PACE Center.

“He’s obviously not your typical mayor,” Pope said.

Meanwhile, Parker continued to experience rapid population growth during Waid’s tenure. The town’s population of 24,310 in 2000 grew to 45,297 a decade later. The town’s unofficial population at the end of 2020 hovers around 56,000.

As mayor, Waid sometimes drew criticism from those opposed to what they felt was a too-rapid pace of growth and development.

Grizzle recalled the only time she saw Waid get upset was when someone threatened or verbally attacked his family or his Christian faith.

Fighting fire with facts

After the COVID-19 pandemic hit Parker, Waid took to Facebook to put the pandemic in perspective. He posted videos explaining concepts like flattening the curve and dissecting language from dense public health orders so people could better understand them.

“I think Mike took a lot of burden on himself,” Rivero said.

At times, Rivero could tell Waid wondered if all that effort was getting through to people.

“The role became putting out fires because folks were attacking from

all angles,” Rivero said, “trying to kill a myth before it snowballed.”

But Rivero knows now, with Waid’s tenure finished, that Waid made more of an impact than he may have otherwise thought.

“You have a much more educated populace” now, Rivero said.

Rivero gave a recent example where Waid used two glasses full of rice to illustrate hospitalization and death rates in Colorado.

“I looked up to the way he valued his community first,” Rivero said.

“It was always about Parker. It was never about getting reelected or making your voter bloc happy. It was about making Parker a better place, daily.”

Waid reflected on his role shortly after his term ended. His favorite parts as mayor were the ones where he could visit a classroom full of kids or make a pediatric cancer patient smile.

Being a good leader, Waid learned, is “about improving the lives of people I will never, ever, ever meet.

The way you do that is demonstrating to those around you what it is to be an amazing leader.”

“If I can help demonstrate to people ‘here’s a conservative Republican who’s in theater or dancing in a ballet’ ... Well, what does one have to do with the other?” Waid said.

“For me, part of that role as mayor is to represent my citizens of Parker — all races creeds, sexes — whenever it’s called upon. The extra benefit of that is that I got to know a world I wouldn’t know anything about.

“I had no plans to go this route …

I have no regrets in my life. The way the world — life — has brought me along has been a beautiful experience.”

As more Douglas County businesses became certified under the county’s new “COVID Best Practices Business Certification Program,” the community was moving closer to a less-restrictive level on the state’s COVID-19 dial last week.

That was even before Gov. Jared Polis announced that Douglas County and other counties that had been operating in level red — the second-most restrictive on the COVID dial — would be moved to level orange as of Jan. 4. With cases and hospitalizations appearing to improve, Douglas County was already moving in that direction, said Jennifer Ludwig, deputy director of Tri-County Health Department.

As of Dec. 30, Douglas County had 155 certified businesses able to operate at level orange restrictions due to the certification program and 140 other businesses in the process of being certified, according to a county spokesperson.

Each time the county moves to a less restrictive level on the dial, certified businesses are also rewarded with loosened restrictions. With the move to level orange, those certified businesses will be able to operate at

level yellow restrictions. However, it was not immediately clear when these businesses would be able to operate under the looser level-yellow guidelines.

Businesses are certified by following an advanced level of measures aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19. The county has prioritized restaurants, gyms and indoor event spaces for certification, as these businesses were most acutely impacted by the level red restrictions.

Sibling is almost like one of the family

M

y sister and I are unalike.

My sister and I are so unalike I required a DNA sample before I agreed to include her in my will.

“Cindy” makes lists.

QUIET She makes lists DESPERATION of the lists she is going to make.

I make lists of the lists I am not going to make.

In a recent email, she wrote, “Yes, I do write out a grocery list.

Lately, I’ve been Craig Marshall going to the store Smith about every two weeks instead of every week. At home I keep a list of things that I might want from many different places. Then before I go to Kroger or Target or wherever, I make a new list for only that particular store.

“Today I had a lengthy list.

A few things weren’t available

because of the holiday season, but I was only getting those things to try a new recipe. I’ll put those things back on a list for the next time I go.”

I wrote back, “As soon as possible, read your last email out loud to your therapist. And send another DNA sample.”

Me? I go to the grocery store every other day, partly to shop and partly to remind myself why I live alone.

Something happens to people in grocery stores that doesn’t anywhere else.

Anne Teak, a Stanford University psychologist, commented, “Shoppers will stare at cans they’ve seen all their lives and wonder if, after a century, Campbell’s might have added sea bass or rum to its tomato soup. I can’t explain it.”

She can’t explain human behavior and she’s a psychologist.

How can a sister and a brother be so different?

I’m not convinced we’re related.

This past year has magnified the importance of school choice. Whether it’s providing more options for in-person schooling or offering different learning environments and curriculum, school choice empowers parents to personalize their children’s education to what works best— and we need it!

It’s no surprise that support for school choice is rising as the vast majority of parents across the country recognize the freedom and results it delivers.

Douglas County is no exception. Remote learning is causing a significant decline in average academic performance and taking a mental and emotional toll on students, parents and teachers. Despite schools being one of the safest places for children, many DCSD middle and high schools remain shut down for in-person learning—though charters and private schools are more likely to remain open.

But the benefits of school choice go beyond in-person learning. In addition to providing students customized pathways to success (when is more choice a bad thing?), school choice narrows achievement gaps for low-income and struggling learners, improves traditional public-school performance (via competition), and can increase per-pupil funding for traditional public schools (because charters receive lower funding per pupil than neighborhood schools).

homecoming queen and I have a face like a first baseman’s mitt, and right now it’s the bottom of the ninth.

Cindy does what she’s told. Her doctor insisted that she schedule appointments to have her ears cleaned with cotton swabs.

And she does.

“Don’t they sell Q-tips in Michigan?” I asked.

HBO has been showing “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” a documentary that focuses on brothers Barry, Robin, Maurice, and touches on Andy.

Barry is the only living Bee Gee. Their biggest success came during the era of Top Forty radio when they had four or five songs in constant rotation.

Good for them; hard on the disc jockeys, as one admits.

For a while their music was unavoidable on AM radio.

The brothers squabbled, particularly Barry and Robin, broke up, got back together and had hit records in the 1990s.

There is no doubt they were brothers.

Not a speck of contrary data.

Sure, my sister and I have the same last name. But that says little. “Smith” is the most common surname in the United States.

I want to make it clear that I am not ashamed of her. In fact, I am proud to be her brother, if, in fact, we are related.

But now and then something will come up, like her lists, that makes me question our relationship.

On separate occasions she has used the words “veggie” and “fridge.” Once in the same sentence.

I closed my eyes and let the moment pass.

2020 might have won, and 2021 has just begun

A

friend of mine is an expert in emotional relevance. His name is Alon Zaibert and he writes a terrific blog. In a blog that he wrote just before Christmas, Alon visits WINNING the topic of WORDS identifying and embracing the struggles we all face.

“It is clear we want to believe those who are sharing with us their personal Michael Norton story as in our core, we are good. We root for the hero who struggled and came out victorious. We relate to them because we struggle as well.

And when we see someone who has done it, like us, we relate to them. We cheer for their achievements as if they are our own. But it seems that most of us use others’ victories as another excuse to stay stagnant. To not go

ahead with their own desires and wishes. It is the struggle ahead that scares most of us.”

— Alon Zaibert As I read his blog, I thought about the year that has passed, and the lingering impact and effect that the year has left us with. For many of us, it is that the year 2020 had won, as we lost people, jobs, businesses, and for some of us, we lost hope. Yet it is also true that 2021 has just begun.

We are still facing overwhelming uncertainty, still grieving, worried, and wondering. The struggle is real, and I do not want to diminish the reality of that.

Each year we recognize the first day of January as the start of something new. New hopes and dreams, new goals and objectives, and a new and fresh start at life. This year seems different as we have many of the same battles still ahead. My encouragement is that we do identify and embrace the struggles that we are facing. Let’s lean into them instead of trying to

outrun them. When we try to run away from our struggles, sooner or later we will run out of energy, we will become exhausted, and now we will have to face our struggles from a disadvantage as we are wiped out from our attempt to avoid and evade them.

As Alon says, “It is the struggle ahead that scares most of us.” Whatever struggle we are facing, if we allow it to, the grip of fear will control us. No matter the magnitude of what we face, we still get to decide what we will allow and what we will not allow when it comes down to how we will choose to respond.

Fear is real. We need to try and lean into that fear and find the first seed of courage, that when nurtured, will grow and give us the strength and courage we need to embrace our struggles and fears.

Restore your health — a lifestyle Rx

ow is the best time to take small steps to improve health and build immune resilience. Doxxing revealed Hall’s character

I wish I could say I was surprised to hear about Mark Hall’s doxxing of public health officials, but sadly it’s just another example of the division in this country, and the poor judgment and bullying that is going on, especially in regard to COVID precautions. Thus, he leaves the rest of us mere mortals to our laughable attempts at hunting and gardening. Hopefully, they will be able to shoot something (not each other) with his final assist.

Pandemic has taken a toll on mental health, but resolutions may be helpful

fter the most disruptive year in generations upended the social, financial and mental well-being of billions across the world, the question many face with the arrival of the new year is: What’s next?

For some, the tradition of new year’s resolutions may serve as a natural springboard for considering that question. It’s not easy, though, when “fatigue” has been the buzzword defining many people’s collective state of mind for months.

That includes “Zoom fatigue, pandemic fatigue, compassion fatigue,” said Cynthia Grant, the chief clinical officer for AllHealth Network, a nonprofit mental health organization in the south metro area.

“I think everyone is trying to stay safe and sane, but the prolonged nature of what we’re dealing with leaves many emotionally depleted, overwhelmed, feeling guilty, uncertain, helpless and exhausted by the choices we have to make every day to keep ourselves safe,” Grant said.

In some ways, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted life similarly to how a natural disaster does, affecting people’s mental health on a wide scale.

“The toll that a natural disaster takes on individuals, families, and communities is well-known in the mental health field,” said Grant, who is also a licensed clinical social worker. “They disrupt our daily lives and remind us of our lack of control in the world. COVID forced us to change our routines and disconnected us from our social supports. The quarantine and saferat-home regulations stripped away many of our coping mechanisms that help tame mental illnesses. We couldn’t see or hug our friends, go to the movies or even work out at the gym.”

But the pandemic has reshaped life in unique ways, too, according to Shawn Worthy, a clinical psychologist and professor of human services at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

Natural disasters “are events that are sudden — they have a big impact and then you can respond, so they’re very acute situations,” Worthy said.

On the other hand, the pandemic is “kind of the chronic situation.

This has been going on for almost a year now, about 10 months now. So the length of the difficulty, I think, impacts people differently.”

Short bursts of traumatic experiences can be harrowing, Worthy said, noting that comparing trauma can be problematic.

“But what I can say is that the long-term, chronic mental health drain that the pandemic is having

on most people certainly is creating this kind of slow-rolling but intense trauma for most people,” Worthy said.

On top of that, the pandemic has affected some vastly more than others in a financial sense, Worthy noted.

“If you have a job you can do at home or is relatively safe, that’s one thing,” Worthy said. “But if you have a job in the entertainment industry, restaurant industry, travel industry, hospital industry, (the effect is great). A lot of them are thinking of how to pay the bills, how to have a holiday dinner — all those very basic-level things.”

The start of the pandemic was marked by a “great solidarity” in fight-

ing the coronavirus, but as the crisis continued to rage, “it hasn’t been the same boat for all of us,” Grant said.

“It’s been said that some of us are hanging on to a life raft while others are on a yacht,” Grant added.

For many, a natural disaster leads to post-traumatic growth with reflection and opportunities to make positive change, Grant said.

But “others (face) job loss, the burden of remote work and remote school, grief over the loss of a loved one, or being isolated for so long it had bred loneli-

ness, depression, anxiety, sleepless nights and increased substance use,” Grant said. “These are normal reactions to an abnormal situation.”

‘The relational factor’

Those wondering how to navigate the hurdles may be reshuffling their priorities. Asked how the pandemic could tend to affect the goals people set, Worthy said there’s no specific

County, sheriff’s office donate hundreds of pounds of food The sheriff’s office teamed up with the county’s human services department for the end-ofyear project.

For the first time, the Douglas County Department of Human Services and the sheriff ’s office teamed up to donate canned food and other nonperishable items to the Help and Hope Center this holiday season.

Through the food drive competition, the sheriff ’s office brought in 967 pounds of food and the department of human services gathered 625 pounds.

The Help and Hope Center serves Douglas and Elbert County residents experiencing economic difficulties, homelessness and other crises. They provide food, toiletries, clothing, housing assistance, employment assistance and other services.

“If you or someone you know could use a little extra help this holiday season, or any other time during the year, please don’t hesitate to contact the Help and Hope Center,” according to a post from the sheriff ’s office.

Donations to the nonprofit organization can be made through arranging a pick-up or drop-off with their team. More information is available at helpandhopecenter.org/donate.

Wise had proposed monitoring the success of elementary schools’ in-person learning, and if that proved both feasible and safe,

Now, the district might return both middle and high school students to hybrid learning at the same time, and by late January, Wise said.

Quarantine protocols clashed with an existing substitute teacher shortage across the state as COVID-19 upended the education system.

“We’re just excited to get back to brewing some interesting flavors,” Hilton said.

Wise said in his letter some help could be on the way.

Gov. Jared Polis announced Dec. 30 that Colorado is moving to Phase 1B of its vaccine priority plan, which now includes teachers. Wise said this may also alleviate some of the operational challenges to inperson learning.

Vaccine priorities in my family would start with my four teen greatgrandkids and end with me. The same in my block. This is not going to happen so I’ll just take the vaccine, if offered, and hope and hope and hope.

All-women dental practice to open in Parker Isra Ahmed envisions ‘community hub’ for dentistry

A multi-disciplinary, all-women dental service provider is opening in Parker by the end of the month, the first of its kind in the Denver area.

Isra Ahmed, of Denver, is moving a new practice to Parker to fulfill a need that has been a dream of hers since she started dental school at the University of Colorado — a “community hub” for dental work.

Ahmed, 30, will head a practice of all-women dentists, including an Ahmed orthodontist, endodontist, periodontist and herself, a prosthodontist. Hers will be the first prosthodontist practice in Parker, at 11005 S. Parker Road.

Ahmed, 30, grew up in Sudan and emigrated to Denver in 2001 amid the Sudanese Civil War. She draws her inspiration from her father, and credits where she is today because of him.

“The reason I don’t bring up the story is because I don’t like when people define by where I’ve been,” Ahmed said. “I like when people define me by where I am now.”

It’s becoming more and more interesting and relevant to the public because there’s a lot of digital stuff that’s going into it. Digital dentistry is a large part of prosthodontics, these days.

What is this new practice you’re opening in Parker?

This office that we’re building is a multi-disciplinary women provider network …

What I’m trying to do here, there are some providers I’ve been talking to — an orthodontist wants to join us, a periodontist (specializing in fine-tune surgery) … also an endodontist, and then me, a prosthodontist.

Sort of like a one-stop shop?

I don’t want to have this center be a “one-stop shop.” I don’t want to have that. For me, I want it

to be more of a community center. I want other dentists to utilize our center and I want to refer to other dentists on smaller cases they can do or cases that are prevalent. I want to involve the community in other aspects of this practice, which is focused on women and children — that’s another aspect I’m very passionate about.

I want to do a lot of volunteer work here, too.

I want it to be a hub for the community—that’s the best way to describe it. Because we have a lot of tools, we can help a lot of people, not just dental, but everything else.

I’m not interested in doing quantity. I’m not interested in having a waiting room full of people, that’s not me. I’m interested in delivering very customized ways of doing dentistry that’s catered to the individual.

What makes this place unique to Parker?

Here, in Parker, there is no prosthodontist, so it’s definitely a prosthodontist under-served area, and there is a need. The other part of it is, an all-women provider network like this is unheard of.

The only women care provider places you think of are like a women’s health clinic, which is catered to women. That’s not what we’re trying to do here. We’re trying to provide access to patients who want women providers — men and women. We’re not saying we’re catered to women only. We’re saying we are women who are a group, a collaborative group, who want to provide the best care for you.

New DA keeps Brauchler on STEM School shooting case John Kellner also announced his leadership team

Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney-elect John Kellner has asked outgoing District Attorney George Brauchler to stay on the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting case and lead the prosecution team, according to a news release from the office.

Kellner will be sworn in as district attorney on Jan. 12, ahead of a February trial for the STEM Kellner shooting’s older suspect.

Brauchler, who is term-limited, will serve as a chief deputy district attorney throughout the trial’s duration, working with the district on a part-time basis. Kellner said Brauchler is invested in both the community and the case after working with victims for more than 18 months.

“I’m grateful to Mr. Brauchler for his commitment to the victims and families involved in the STEM shooting to see this trial through,” Kellner said in the release.

The May 7, 2019 shooting left eight students injured and 18-year-old Kendrick Castillo dead.

Defendant Devon Erickson pleaded not guilty nearly one year ago.

Charges include felony first-degree murder. His trial begins Feb. 1.

Erickson’s former codefendant, Alec McKinney, pleaded guilty to similar charges and was sentenced in July to life in prison plus 38 year, with the possibility of parole after 40 years.

Kellner also announced who he named to his leadership team in the sprawling judicial district representing more than a million people in Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.

• He selected Tom Byrnes, a chief deputy district attorney in the district, as his assistant district attorney — the No. 2 position within the office.

• Vicki Klingensmith will serve as the senior chief deputy district attorney in the district’s Arapahoe County office. Klingensmith has been a prosecutor in the community for more than 16 years.

• Chief Deputy District Attorney Chris Wilcox will retain his role in the Douglas County office. Eva Wilson will lead the Elbert County office.

Wilson has worked in the 1st Judicial District for 16 years, and previously served as a prosecutor in the 18th Judicial District for two decades.

Kellner said he views the 18th Judicial District as one of the state’s best, but vowed do more to “support victims, tackle rising violent crimes in our communities, support rehabilitation for defendants, and improve transparency and accountability to create a more equitable criminal justice system.”

But “what I’m guessing is that typically, when people have faced trauma, their response is one that is more focused on the more fundamental kind of issues,” Worthy said. “So like, spending better quality time with family, not taking for granted your grandma and grandpa who you haven’t been able to see (consistently) in a long time.

“Hopefully for a fair number of people, it’ll be those kinds of fundamental things — the relational factor in our lives,” Worthy said.

Still others have been unable to go out and enjoy their passions — fitness and travel may be high priorities for people, Worthy said.

Grant thinks that in the new year, many will set goals related to making physical and mental health a priority.

“We are also seeing people set priorities with a focus on making time to connect in our relationships with friends, family, neighbors, and even the server at our favorite restaurant or the person we used to see on at the gym,” Grant said. “I also recommend that people prioritize setting goals that are fun and bring joy — whether that is something small like dancing in the kitchen, taking a sunrise walk, an aspirational goal like reading 52 books in a year or taking a long-

awaited trip with friends. Find the joy!”

Grant’s advice is to set goals that are “reasonable, do-able and something you can look back on and know you hit it and checked the box.”

“I encourage people to set small goals — what Arianna Huffington calls `microsteps,’ a big idea that’s too small to fail. For example, if your goal is to cut your social media use in half, start by not having your phone with you when you’re eating, then try not to have it in your bedroom,” Grant said. “There’s a little bit of pride in each step that gets accomplished that makes us feel good about achieving our goals.”

Worthy emphasized the dual benefits of focusing on helping others.

“If you can turn the focus away from yourself and onto potentially helping other people who are less fortunate, that is always a good thing, because it makes you feel good and it makes someone else feel good,” Worthy said, using the example of volunteering at a food bank or a similar

Clerk urges Pence to declare some states’ elections illegal Merlin Klotz said the move would result in the reelection of Donald Trump

In a public Facebook post, the head of Douglas County’s elections called for Vice President Mike Pence to declare elections in seven states illegal, a move that he said would result in President Donald Trump staying in office.

“Pence has plenary authority on January 6 and can declare AZ, GA, MI, NM, NV, WI and PA elections illegal, not following state and general election processes,” Merlin Klotz said in a Dec. 28 Facebook post. “Contact/encourage Pence.”

The concept that Klotz — a Republican elected clerk and recorder in 2014 — was referring to is a longshot effort for Congress to challenge the electoral tally on Jan. 6.

In the post, Klotz further commented that declaring the states’ elections illegal would result in 232 electoral votes for Trump and 222 for Joe Biden.

Klotz said in an interview with Colorado Community Media that he was referencing a claim made by a post from an online, conservative blog. He also explained more on his beliefs about the election.

After several media outlets took

to Twitter with screenshots of his post — which as of Dec. 30 had been shared nearly 50 times — Klotz said he was using his platform to share information on what he sees as a possible outcome.

“I think it is important that if I’ve got a knowledge base that I share that knowledge base,” he said. “If you don’t like what you hear I’m sorry but this is a possibility.”

Dana Torpey-Newman, the head of the Douglas County Democrats, said Klotz’s post was not appropriate coming from an elections official and stated that claims of voter fraud are not supported by evidence.

“It feels like an ethical violation. It is not the place of a county clerk to comment on how the elections are run in another county or another state,” she said. “To demand the disenfranchisement of voters is pretty shocking.”

Klotz said he believes Colorado has an “amazingly secure” election system but that it is “well substantiated” that other states didn’t follow the same stringent election protocols.

When asked about specific claims of election fraud that Klotz found credible he said “nothing in particular stood out.”

“It’s a matter of saying this election may or may not be over but we did a great job in this state, the state as a whole,” he said. “It’s unfortunate that they (other states) didn’t follow the same protocols that we have.”

Klotz went on to reference signature verification, bipartisan teams of election judges and the mailing of a single ballot to every registered voter as some processes he saw as correct in Colorado and incorrect in other states.

The Trump campaign has attempted several lawsuits related to the 2020 presidential election, which the Electoral College confirmed as a victory for former Vice President Joe Biden on Dec. 14. None of these lawsuits has resulted in action that

could change the result.

Klotz said he does not believe that Dominion voting machines, a target for many who challenge the election results, had any part to play in the election improprieties he alleges.

“Dominion has nothing to do with it as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

“What matters is the process. It needs to be like we do it.”

In another post, Klotz encouraged people to “Write, text, email and pray for Mike Pence to do the right thing.”
