Q&A with South Metro Fire Chief Bob Baker Littleton to enter talks with department after partners announce changes

Littleton Fire Rescue, Littleton’s city fire department, may soon be no more, after its partners — Littleton Fire Protection District and Highlands Ranch Metro District — announced they are severing ties with the city and joining South Metro Fire Rescue, a large district that covers much of the south metro area.

The city recently announced that it will enter into negotiations to Baker join South Metro as well, a move that would create the state’s second-largest fire protection agency.

We talked to South Metro’s Chief Bob Baker about what unification will look like.

Why should Littleton and its fire partners join with South Metro?

South Metro, as well as Littleton Fire Protection District, Highlands Ranch Metro District, Littleton Fire Rescue, Cunningham Fire District and even Castle Rock had been contemplating the idea of a consolidated fire department since the mid-1990s.

There have been four or five studies on the efficacy of combining our fire departments that go back more than 20 years.

Many times, the consultants have

said unification makes sense, but the timing was never right. About a year or so ago, the fire chiefs from Littleton Fire Rescue, Cunningham, and myself met with the presidents of our labor organizations and began discussions about combining fire departments.

This has been a grassroots effort.

We would not do this if it were not the right thing to do.

We said it has to improve service to our citizens, improve safety for our personnel, be the most cost-effective model, and be sustainable into the foreseeable future.

We worked really hard to evaluate the efficacy of combining our organizations, and we feel very confident it will do all those things.

What challenges does South Metro face?

The Denver metro area is doing very well economically. We’re adding more people to the state every minute.

Our challenges are similar to others in the area: Traffic congestion is one.

Another is the Gallagher Amendment, which reduces the mill levy assessment for residential properties.

That has a direct impact on our budget. Hiring paramedics is another — there are only so many, and everybody wants them.

With regards to unification, some of the immediate challenges are the inclusion elections for citizens in Highlands Ranch and in the LFPD. Those take place in May. We’ll be asking the electorate to vote to include themselves in South Metro.

The organization, if it’s fully unified, would serve half a million people over 285 square miles, with a budget north of $100 million, not to mention hundreds of employees.

One of our challenges will be to maintain the culture that has made us an exceptional fire department, which is taking care of our citizens like family members.

We don’t want to lose that as and just become a large organization providing a service. South Metro employs about 450 people, and we’ll be adding hundreds.

Integrating those personnel into our organization and making sure we have a shared culture will require reconciling operating guidelines and policies and procedures.

LFR is 190 people, and Cunningham adds 70 people. We’d also be building another fire station and adding another 25 or so people to that, and we may have more administrative personnel.

What will it mean for South Metro to absorb these new departments?

We’re pretty used to change, because we’ve done this in the past. South Metro is an amalgamation of several other organizations. This isn’t our first rodeo.

What it means is the challenge of integrating the new personnel into the organization and developing an operational model that best serves the whole of the community.

We’ll be the second-largest fire department in Colorado. The next largest would be Colorado Springs, and we’d be significantly larger than them.

Also, Colorado Springs is a municipal department, and their administration is in the city government. South Metro is a fire district, so all of our administration is in our workforce.

How will you manage the transition/onboarding of the new departments?

We want the best people in the right positions. If you’ve got a strong succession model, and you’ve prepared people for future opportunities, you’re set up for success.

One of the things that sets us apart is education. If somebody wants to be promoted to a company officer, they need an associate’s degree. If they want to advance to battalion chief or captain, they need a bachelor’s degree.

Anyone on the executive team needs a master’s degree. We believe a profession requires professionals. Our organization has the best qualified people

of any department in Colorado with the highest educational standards.

That’s how we prepare people to handle managing a larger-sized department.

Unification will be successful because we have really good leaders who have been prepared for a long time. It won’t be so much my leadership at the top as our rank and file members who will make this successful.

What will be your approach to managing a department of this size?

The foundation of my leadership won’t change. I believe that good leaders have a servant heart, a teachable spirit, and are compassionate and competent.

The day you retire, you should be better than you were the day before.

I’m working hard to make sure I’m prepared for the challenge, and that I’m deserving of it. Being in leadership is a huge honor, and especially in public safety.

One of the things I talk to my board about is spending time with other organizations that have gone through this. There aren’t many, but in California, there’s Orange County, Los Angeles, and Sacramento’s departments that have gone through similar endeavors. I’ll be spending time with the leaders of those organizations to learn from their successes and challenges.

Maintaining connectivity to the folks in government and the elected officials in the areas we serve is key. Full unification would involve 11 different municipalities — 12 if you count Highlands Ranch (an unincorporated community). We want to stay in touch and connected with county commissioners, mayors and city managers.

This is not South Metro leading this initiative. This is a very collaborative strategy that’s been facilitated and communicated by three fire chiefs and three labor representatives. That’s pretty much unprecedented.

Many organizations gobble up smaller ones, but that we would hold hands and believe that this is the right thing to do for our citizens and employees is an anomaly. It speaks very highly of my counterparts. We’re in positions to lead with principle and integrity, and I feel like we’re doing that.

National Western Stock Show prepares for January events Iconic trade show brings animals, visitors, fun to north Denver

Each January for the past 112 years, Western has been the preferred fashion in Denver during the run of the National Western Stock Show.

This year’s festivities kick off Jan. 6 and the schedule of event wraps up Jan. 21. During that stretch of time about 400,000 men, women and children will push through the turnstiles to watch or take part in events including rodeos, equestrian events, stock judging events and auctions.

While entertainment draws a lot of attention, much of the event’s focus is on stock shows. There are judging competitions for horses, cattle, sheep, swine, goats, llamas, bison, yaks, poultry and rabbits. Ten livestock associations hold their national shows at National Western.

“This is just the wrong place for this type of facility,” Mayor Mike Waid said in a news release issued by the town on Dec. 21. “The town therefore felt it had no choice but to take this action.”

Douglas County officials received a copy of the lawsuit but said they had not had time to review it.

“We are in receipt of the lawsuit challenging the processing of an application for a trash transfer facility.

We will respond within all legal deadlines,” Lance Ingalls, Douglas County attorney, said the afternoon of Dec. 21.

According to Waid, Douglas County is in violation of an intergovernmental agreement between the county and Parker that was established in 2002, which includes a Comprehensive Development Plan, agreed upon by both parties, regarding future development. A town urban service area and community separation buffer areas were established as common ground.

The agreement mandates compliance with applicable town regulations and master plans in future development.

Parker officials claim the town master plan and the county master plan do not allow general industrial uses at the location proposed for the facility, and allowing the project to go forward would have negative effects on the residents of Parker.

“The approval of this application by Douglas County will have significant negative impacts on existing neighborhoods, professional, medical and corporate offices, regional parks, open space and airport...” the town’s news release states.

“Beyond the noise and smell problems, the Town believes there is a

stock sales where millions of dollars change hands as prize animals are sold to new owners.

The first wave of the thousands of animals will begin arriving at the National Western Stock Show complex as the new year is ushered in, because stabling the animals requires coordination due to the hundreds of animals coming to the show and the limits on stable space.

The cattle barns are the temporary home for animals being shown or put up for auction. When it is time for them to be shown, the cattle are brought inside, filling the barn with the splash of water and the hum of clippers as each animal is washed, blow-dried and combed to get them looking their best. In one barn, a sign over a wash area for cattle identifies it as “The Bovine Beauty Shop.”

Once that breed’s shows are complete, the animals are either auctioned off or loaded up to be taken home, so the stalls are cleaned and made ready for the next occupants.

The National Western Stock Show is Colorado’s largest trade show.

The hall of education is filled with vendors offering items ranging from

custom embroidered jackets to farm machinery. The estimated economic impact is about $115 million and the event generates about $6 million in local and state taxes.

The Denver Coliseum is home to the National Western Stock Show Rodeo, the first event on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association schedule. Each rodeo performance features competition in bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping and barrel racing, plus there are specialty acts booked to perform during breaks in the rodeo.

The rodeo events are in the Coliseum while, at the other end of the National Western complex, the Events Center will be equally busy as the site of horse competitions for a number of breeds and styles.

There will be shows and competitions as well as activities that include the Grand Prix jumping event, an evening of dancing horses and a daily schedule of riding and performance competitions.

A new equestrian event this year is the National Western Horseman’s

Challenge that will be held Jan. 8-10 in the Denver Coliseum. The event is designed to provide a challenging, educational and entertaining opportunity for local and national equestrians to be involved in the stock show within a growing and evolving discipline. Horse and rider teams will be faced with various obstacles and tasks testing their confidence in each other.

The press release on the National Western Horseman’s Challenge stated it will offer schooling time followed by competition phases including individual timed practice rounds, a team competition and individual speed challenges. Obstacles and tasks will vary to accommodate all levels and ages of riders and horses.

The show events are spread among a number of facilities. Stock show activities are centered at the National Western Stock Show Arena and Hall of Education near 46th Avenue and Humbolt Street, the Events Center at 1515 E. 47th Ave. and the Denver Coliseum. Centennial Airport weighs in with concerns STAFF REPORT

While the bulk of Centennial Airport is in unincorporated Arapahoe County, the southern end of the airport is in Douglas County.

Because of that, “Douglas County was required to refer the proposed (trash-transfer) facility to our planning and development office for review,” said Deborah Grigsby Smith, public information officer for the Arapahoe County Public Airport Authority, which governs the airport.

SUIT SEEKS ‘INJUNCTIVE RELIEF’ In the lawsuit, the town seeks the following: “Injunctive relief to enjoin the County’s processing of and potential approval of a recycle/trash transfer facility which is a general industrial use. The Town also seeks to require the County to specifically perform the mutually binding and enforceable comprehensive development plan and related intergovernmental agreement by prohibiting general industrial uses within significant safety issue. Trash facilities like the one proposed can attract hundreds of birds, and birds are a major problem for airports such as Centennial Airport. The federal Aviation Administration currently recommends that the location of municipal solid waste landfills and trash-transfer facilities should not be within five statute miles of an airport.”

The release further states “Such an action is necessary to stop the process-

Airport Executive Director Robert Olislagers said the airport has no standing with respect to the county’s use-by-right position.

“However, any use of land that creates a hazard to flight operations, such as a bird attractant, is a major concern to us,” he said. “Douglas County may own the land, but the airspace above it is a very different story.”

In a letter to Douglas County’s department of community development, dated Dec. 19, an airport noise and environmental specialist noted ing of this application, in order to protect the very schools, neighborhoods and businesses that were supposed to be protected by the Intergovernmental Agreement and the Comprehensive Development Plan.”

Scott Eden, CEO of Mountain Waste and Recycling, has said building the facility would be a great opportunity to bring recycling to the residents of Parker, and reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the landfill.

“I have been a serial recycler since 1988. It’s expensive to recycle, and if you dedicate yourself to being someone who wants to divert stuff from the landfills, you have to build facilities that can help solve the problem. We’ll be able to offer recycling to a whole new area of Parker,” Eden recently told Colorado Community Media.

Eden had not seen the lawsuit as of the afternoon of Dec. 21, but commented on the news release issued by the town.

“We have not had a chance to review the lawsuit, so we can’t comment

that site plans call for an indoor recycling/transfer facility.

“However, if the site becomes a bird attractant it could pose a hazard to aircraft arriving and departing the Airport environment,” the letter signed by Dylan Heberlein states.

The letter also states the proposed development falls within a restricted development area.

“The RDA is intended to prevent incompatible development in the close proximity of the Airport, it will see numerous overflights and the associated effects at all hours of the day.” on it,” he said via email. “However, we have seen the press release from Parker, and we can emphatically say that Parker has all of its facts wrong regarding the characteristics of the recycling and transfer station. In the press release, Parker complains about the possibilities of noise, odor and pests — totally ignoring that this will be an enclosed facility with all operations occurring indoors. None of those complaints are valid.

“Specifically, the press release focuses on birds and the proximity to Centennial Airport. Even if birds were an issue in connection with an indoor facility (it’s not!), we note that Denver International Airport has three OPEN landfills well within the ‘five-mile buffer zone’ that the FAA recommended in a 2010 study; and that airport is operating in total safety.”

The news release said this is the first time Parker has filed a civil action against Douglas County since the town’s incorporation, which occurred in 1981.

Arrest made in 2010 slaying of teacher in Elbert County

The Elbert County Sheriff ’s Office announced it has arrested Daniel Pesch, 34, in connection with the 2010 death of Kiowa High School teacher Randy Wilson.

Pesch was arrested Dec. 19 in Littleton by Elbert County investigators, according to a sheriff ’s office news release. Pesch was charged with first-degree murder, resisting arrest, obstructing an officer, and attempt to escape. Further details were withheld per a court order.

Wilson’s body was found with his hands tied behind his back, a belt

around his neck and a bag over his head in a field in northern Elbert County on June 14, 2010, according to a Denver Post article from the time. Wilson taught physics and calculus at Kiowa High School for a decade.

Pesch Wilson, who was originally from Montana, was 52 when he was killed, according to an obituary.

He was the father of five sons, and had taught in schools around the country and as far away as the South Pacific.

Wilson was last seen at a gas station in Bennett, heading back to Kiowa from visiting family in Montana, on the night

before his body was found, according to a Colorado Community Media story from the time. His car was found abandoned in the same area as his body, near the intersection of county roads 194 and 53, a remote area about halfway between Bennett and Kiowa.

Investigators in 2011 interviewed two people who may have spoken to Wilson at the gas station, but no arrests were made at the time.

Pesch appears to have moved to the south metro Denver area in recent months from Summit County, according to social media posts. A LinkedIn profile appearing to belong to Pesch shows he worked as a chef, lived in Summit County until earlier this year,

and held a degree from the University of Central Florida. Pesch’s Facebook features pictures of his young daughters, as well as a variety of furniture and children’s toys posted to a local yard sale page in late November and early December.

Court records show that eviction proceedings were filed against Pesch and his partner in September 2017.

Pesch was charged with several crimes in Breckenridge in November 2016, including criminal possession of ID documents from multiple victims and illegal possession of a weapon, though the charges were dismissed.

It is unclear whether Pesch knew Wilson.

Start year off on right foot First Day Hikes encourages outdoor recreation at parks STAFF REPORT

Kick off the new year by getting outside and taking a hike.

Colorado State Parks and Wildlife will again participate in America’s State Parks First Day Hikes initiative, with 26 state parks participating by hosting an organized hike Jan. 1. Each park offers an opportunity to enjoy the new year, with most parks offering guided hikes and some parks providing multiple options to choose from, allowing you to select the time and route you prefer.

“Each year, we’ve had a growing number of our parks offering First Day Hikes events as part of this national effort to get people outdoors and into state parks,” said Bob Broscheid, Colorado State Parks director. “First Day Hikes are a great way to cure cabin fever and celebrate the new year in our amazing state with a walk our hike in one of our beautiful state parks.”

Visitors to Colorado State Parks can expect to be surrounded by nature in winter, experience spectacular views and, in many parks, benefit from the company of a knowledgeable state park guide on hikes ranging from halfmile fun walks to challenging fivemile hikes. In addition, most parks

offer refreshments and giveaways provided by a Colorado Parks Foundation grant.

Bring snacks and water, dress in layers and be prepared with traction and/or trekking poles for winter hiking in snow or on icy trails; if there is snow, consider bringing snowshoes.

When state Rep. Brittany Pettersen was a child, her day started with finding and hiding her mother’s keys, pouring out her alcohol and pills, and then going to school. She’d get home, and she’d do it all over again.

“It took me probably, maybe being 9 years old, to recognize that my mom was very different from most parents,” said Pettersen, a Democrat representing the Lakewood area.

She was concerned about her mom, but she didn’t know what to do.

Her after-school routine grew to include checking to see whether her mom was breathing.

Pettersen’s mom, Stacy, had an opioid addiction from the time she was about 33. After being overprescribed for her back pain, she developed a dependency that escalated to heroin use when another doctor cut her prescription. After several recent trips to the ER from overdosing, she finally asked for help — the words Pettersen said she waited 29 years to hear.

She was far from alone in her fears.

Colorado saw 108 opioid-related deaths — involving prescription drugs, heroin or both — in 1999, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment.

In 2016, in that same category, the state saw a death count of 504.

Now, Colorado legislators are putting forth six bills to make sure opioid substance abuse doesn’t progress that far. Spearheaded by Pettersen, the Opioid and Other Substance Use Disorders Interim Study Committee aims to tackle the problem from all sides: in the medical world, the law-enforcement field, the health-care industry and — perhaps most directly — where people inject drugs.

Safe place amid the stigma The most visible effort, if passed, would allow a pilot project for a supervised injection facility — where people with substance-use disorders can safely inject drugs — in Denver.

No other place in the United States has such a facility, according to the Colorado Legislative Council Staff, but there are 100 of them in 66 cities among nine countries, said committee member state Sen. Cheri Jahn, D-Wheat Ridge.

Health professionals would oversee the facility, making sure to reverse overdoses if they happen, Pettersen said. They’ll also be able to refer people to resources to beat their substance-use disorder.

“This is about keeping people alive today, bringing them out of the shadows and increasing the likelihood they’ll get treatment,” Pettersen said.

A bipartisan group of 10 state lawmakers called the Opioid and Other Substance Use Disorders Interim Study Committee worked from July to October putting together six bills for consideration in the coming year. • Bill F — Speed up requests for medicationassisted treatment for substance-use disorders under Medicaid and private insurance so patients don’t go back to using opioids while waiting for treatment.

Interim committees meet while the Legislature is not in regular session, the part of the year when it passes bills. The group unianmously voted for all bills to move forward — aside from Bill B (9-1 vote) and Bill F (7-3 vote) — to the Legislative Council, another group of lawmakers that reviews them before they can be introduced to be considered by the state House and Senate.

That council approved the bills to move forward Nov. 15.

The regular session starts Jan. 10.

cerned about the facility normalizing drug use, Jahn said, but to her, the apprehension is misplaced — localizing drug use to one safe area could help make businesses, parks and alleyways more safe, she said.

“Nothing is gonna impact a business more than when someone walks in for coffee and they walk into the bathroom and find someone dead,” Jahn said.

“You want your kids (passing) used needles on their way to school?” she added.

Committee member state Rep. Chris Kennedy, D-Lakewood, said the business community has been “wildly supportive” of the idea, because of the problem of people overdosing in bathrooms.

The facility would also reduce the spread of HIV and hepatitis C, Pettersen said.

“You and I are never going to go do heroin (just) because this place exists,” she added.

The Prescription Drug Monitoring Program collects information submitted by pharmacies about prescribing and dispensing medications, and about patients. Such a statewide database exists in nearly all states, according to the PDMP Training and Technical Assistance Center, but it’s not mandatory for doctors in Colorado to check it before writing prescription refills.

It would answer questions like, “Do we have someone at risk of addiction, or are they addicted? Are they doctorshopping?” Jahn said, using a term for when patients go to multiple doctors seeking more drugs.

For initial prescriptions, people with acute conditions — getting a tooth pulled, or other short-term issues — would be limited to a seven-day supply of pills for one prescription, in most cases. Chronic, or long-term, conditions would be among the exceptions, Jahn said.

Committee member state Sen. Jack Tate, R-Centennial, said the problem in his district is a latent supply of opioids.

“My sense is we don’t have as high an addict population as many (areas),” Tate said.

Stacy finally asked for help with her condition, but was told that Medicaid doesn’t cover treatment.

“We’re spending tens of thousands of dollars keeping people alive and then denying them the help they need F to get better,” Brittany Pettersen said.

“So that was devastating and I think t highlighted for me the enormous gap a we have in our system.”

Death toll creates urgency in fight against opioid abuse

One Coloradan died approximately every 27 hours on average from a prescription opioid-related overdose in 2015, according to Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment data. While that death toll dropped by 9 percent in 2016, the number of heroin-related overdose deaths increased 43 percent.

“Right now, we’re seeing about 60 percent of overdose deaths due to pills, with about 40 percent due to heroin,” said Robert Valuck, director of the Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention.

“Heroin is making a comeback.”

“Overdose deaths across the nation have doubled in the past 15 years,” said Lindsey Myers, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s violence and injury prevention branch chief.

The increase in deaths over the long term has led lawmakers in all states to examine ways to combat the problem.

Colorado’s legislative Opioid and Other Substance Use Disorders Interim Study Committee recently voted to move forward with a six-bill package of legislation, aimed to help treat, prevent and intervene if possible when opioid addiction occurs.

Will the legislation help? The following is a look at what some area healthcare professionals have to say.

• One bill proposes to “create training programs for health professionals, law enforcement and at-risk communities for safe opioid prescribing, medication-assisted treatment and overdose prevention.”

the wealthy or people with good insurance plans,” Jahn said.

Another arm of the proposals would make insurance plans more cheaply cover alternatives to opioid drugs for pain — physical therapy, chiropractic care and acupuncture — to make sure patients aren’t unnecessarily pushed toward opioids, Kennedy said. It would also bar “step therapy,” a requirement that patients try opioid medications before receiving non-opioid drugs, for both private insurance and Medicaid.

“Even if a drug is covered by Medicaid or an insurance company, that doesn’t mean you can actually (get it),” said Kennedy, who is spearheading the proposed insurance changes.

He’s also pushing to change the requirement that patients get “prior authorization,” a green-light from an insurance provider, to know that medication-assisted treatment will be covered. That involves a combination of psychotherapy and drugs that help fight opioid addiction, he said.

The proposal aims for quicker response times from both Medicaid and private insurers to requests for medication-assisted treatment. Currently,

According to Valuck, physicians and health-care providers could benefit from learning more about medicationassisted treatment and utilizing that treatment with their patients.

• Another bill would limit most opioid prescriptions to a seven-day supply for acute conditions, and, in many cases, mandate that medical professionals check the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program database before writing prescription refills.

Dr. John Douglas, executive director of the Tri-County Health Department, which serves Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties, said restricting prescriptions for acute conditions could be effective.

“If you’re an addict that says, ‘I’m ready to seek treatment,’ and someone says, ‘OK, wait seven days please,’ there’s a high risk that you might return to heroin to avoid withdrawal symptoms,” Kennedy said.

“Sometimes, not even that is necessary. Combining certain drugs, which are not opiates, can sometimes work better.”

The part of the bill that would require medical professionals to check the PDMP database could pose a problem, according to Myers. Pharmacists are required to update the system every time they fill a prescription for narcotics, so in theory every physician could pull up their patient and assess their history.

In reality, the current PDMP system is underutilized by physicians because it is cumbersome and takes too much time to deliver the information, Myers said.

“I think providers want to use the system, but it’s underutilized in Colorado,” she said. “The main reason is it is a system that lives outside the workflow of providers. But we are pilot testing ways to make the system easier to incorporate into records.”

• A third bill would pave the way for a pilot project for a supervised injection facility in Denver.

Offering a safe place, supervised by medical professionals, for addicts to inject may seem radical, but according to Valuck, such places work.

“Supervised injection facilities work, we are in support of them,” he said. “First and foremost, these are human beings. Everyone knows someone with a substance use disorder. Secondly, SIFs decrease the spread of disease, such as HIV and hepatitis.

These diseases put first responders and physicians at risk.”

Tri-County Health already supports

a syringe-access facility in Aurora, which has served about 150 clients within its first year. The program is a street-based program, and those with substance-abuse disorders can exchange dirty needles for clean ones, Douglas said.

• Another of the bills proposes to expand the Colorado Health Services Corps program. The program currently includes financial incentives for health care professionals who agree to work in underserved areas. Historically, the program has only included physicians.

“It would now include substance abuse counselors through Colorado Health Services Corps,” Myers said.

“The new bill would expand program to incentivize people to move and work in areas where there are not addiction counselors.”

• A fifth measure would significantly increase access to residential treatment to qualifying people with substance-use disorders.

One of the biggest problems is a lack of treatment for substance-abuse disorders, Valuck said.

“We are at about an 85 percent treatment gap,” Valuck said. “The state would have to come up with money to help pay for residential treatment.”

• The final bill would improve “prior-authorization” standards to ensure insurance companies and Medicaid give timely approval for medicationassisted treatment. This bill also aims to reduce copays for physical therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic alternatives to narcotics.

“This is really a good start,” Valuck said. “We have to shift the language, and the way we think of people with substance-use disorders.”

The Adams County Sheriff ’s Office expressed support for creating training programs for law enforcement regarding the opioid epidemic.

“By creating a training system for all, it helps us identify and recognize those in need,” said Jim Morgen, spokesman for the sheriff ’s office. In “the rural parts of Adams County, we arrive minutes before medical (support) is able to, and we have to be able to recognize somebody having opioid reactions (including) an overdose. These minutes are crucial in potentially saving lives.”

Lawmakers’ proposals include directing the Anschutz Medical Campus’s research center to create training for officers on how to better use naloxone — Narcan is its brand name — in responding to overdose situations.

Jahn also said she believes crime would be reduced by creating supervised injection facilities because more people would have access to treatment.

A person “would not have stolen all these goods if (they) didn’t have an addiction (they) needed to feed,” Jahn said, speaking hypothetically.

Law enforcement officials in Wheat Ridge, other Jefferson County areas and Denver have told her that increases in property crimes have been tied to substance-abuse disorders. Police in Englewood and Littleton have made

similar observations, referencing opioids. “If they were able to get it more easily, or get it at all, we have a better chance,” Jahn said. “People don’t want to live like this.”

End of a journey Stacy Pettersen’s lack of Medicaidcovered care left her daughter with few options.

People Brittany Pettersen worked with to address the state’s opioid issue recommended an involuntary commitment process — by which she’d receive a court order for her mother to be taken to paid-for treatment. Stacy Pettersen recently began a program at a rehabilitation center after two months in a program where she underwent detox.

In early 2018, she’s expected to complete her rehab program, and Pettersen said her mom is learning to live again.

At a dinner with family, relatives went around the table and said what they were grateful for, and everyone said they were thankful for her.

“It was very emotional,” Pettersen, 36, said. “To have her there and sober and be alive, and how every day is the best day ... it’s like she’s been frozen for 29 years. That’s a lot to deal with, the years that have been lost, but she’s thankful to be alive.

“For the first time in 29 years,” Pettersen said, “I have my mom in my life.”

Parker girl gathers collection of items for homeless Pinterest sparked drive to help people along Front Range

The popular social media site Pinterest is known for sharing and sparking ideas on just about any subject, including DIY projects, wedding planning, fashion and decorating.

For Parker girl Emily Huber, 12, a visit to the site inspired her to do something to help the less fortunate. Emily, who attends Sagewood Middle School, started a campaign to gather essential supplies for homeless people along the Front Range, and her efforts have paid off more than she imagined.

“I was on Pinterest and I had heard about other people putting gift bags together with shampoo, soap and toothbrushes and stuff,” said Emily. “I wanted to do something to help them.”

Emily said she began searching her own home for items to donate, and quickly realized that if she had stuff lying around the house, other people probably did as well. And since the idea was sparked through social media, she decided to use social media to ask for help.

“I asked my mom if I could use her social media accounts to ask for donations. We put a request up on the Nextdoor site, and people just started bringing stuff and asking us to come pick stuff up,” said Emily.

Her request was seen by neighbors, and a teacher at her school saw it as well. Before long, Emily said they would return home to find piles of donated items on their front porch.

Emily’s mom Lisa Huber, said she was surprised by Emily’s decision to make bags for the homeless.

“Usually she’s on Pinterest looking for craft ideas,” said Huber. “This day, she announced she was making homeless kits. We’ve done some volunteer work as a family, but she said she wanted to do something and get involved in her own way this year.”

To date Emily has gathered more than 250 snack items, and hundreds of single-size shampoos, toothpaste and personal hygiene items. She plans to continue gathering items through the holiday season, and will present the bags to homeless people in February or March through the Church in the City organization. She has also reached out to her dentist and local businesses for donations, and has received some cash donations, which she will use to buy more items for the bags.

“I think through the holidays people take good care of the homeless,” said Emily. “But after the holidays, and when it gets really cold, people forget about them.

I want to give them something they can use when everything else is gone.”

Items needed include individual-sized tissues, soaps, deodorant, snack items, combs, razors and sweets. A pickup of donated items can be arranged by calling Huber at 303-725-0163.

Opinions divided on ‘scraping’ in older neighborhoods Old housing stock makes way for larger new homes

Scrape-offs — homes demolished and replaced with larger, newer ones by developers — have remade vast swaths of Denver in recent years, with hundreds popping up in trendy neighborhoods like Highland, LoHi and Washington Park.

Now, as land prices skyrocket in posh parts of Denver, the controversial practice is beginning to move into the suburbs.

Englewood, which issued only two demolition permits in 2012, has seen houses scraped at breakneck pace in recent years, with 75 demolition permits issued since the beginning of 2015.

Though the process of replacing single-family homes with often much larger stock has gotten less attention than gargantuan new apartment complexes, city planners are taking notice.

Scrape-offs — older houses demolished and replaced by developers — are making their way from Denver into the suburbs. This duplex on S. Elati St. in Englewood, built by developer Gilda Zaragoza, replaced a 1950s bungalow with a notably taller pair of homes worth a cumulative $1.3 million.

DAVID GILBERT Pushback Many of the scrapes are multi-family units, said Rick Muriby, Golden’s planning director.

“People feel they’re detrimental to the area,” Muriby said. “A lot of the existing pattern has been single-family housing. When you introduce multiple units at a larger size, that’s when people push back.”

Scrape-offs do little to help the need for workforce and

starter housing, Muriby said.

“These tend to be luxury units,” Muriby said. “We’re talking about $750,000 for a townhome. People ask who’s affording them, but obviously somebody is. It’s hard to stop market forces.”

The rise in adjacent property values associated with scrape-offs can be a doubleedged sword, said Brad Evans, a local housing activist and administrator of Denver FUG-

LY, a Facebook page where metro-area residents discuss the impacts of rapid growth.

“Let’s say I bought my house in 2003 for $200,000,” Evans said. “My property taxes back then were $580 a year. Now, my taxes have tripled. If I’m someone on a fixed income, that can be a real problem.”

Renters in neighborhoods with lots of scrapes can fare even worse, Evans said.

“There’s not a lot of help for people who have been there long-term,” Evans said. “If people don’t own, they’re out.

Renters get bumped out and now they’re driving farther, and traffic gets worse. If a thousand people who could walk or bike to work start driving, that’s a thousand more cars on the road.”

Scraping by To developers, scrape-offs are a boon to neighborhoods with aging housing stock that is often smaller than current consumer demands.

“The homes that are in the neighborhoods that people want to live in are not suitable for today’s lifestyles or energy requirements or transportation needs or aging-in-place needs,” said Dave Jackson of

Jackson Design Build, which has built scrape-offs around the metro area. “We’re replacing it with current modern architecture. The prior architecture is often an 800-square-foot ranch.

When you have to pay half a million dollars for that piece of ground, you can’t build an 800-square-foot ranch on it. It can be razed and replaced with a three- or four-plex.”

Jackson acknowledges that scrape-offs can change the feel of a neighborhood.

“We’re seeing a generational turnover, and there are a lot of people who like contemporary styles and those who don’t,” Jackson said. “Some people would call it gentrification. I don’t know. I’m really not a scholar. Some see it as revitalizing old neighborhoods, some people see it as people being pushed out, and that’s true. It’s happening.”

Much of the criticism around scrape-offs on the Denver FUGLY page centers around the aesthetics of scrape-offs, which are often of a new architectural style called Transitional Urban Contemporary, typified by a boxy appearance and often bright colors.

If you were to walk into my house right now, that’s about all you would see.

I am not going anywhere, and my furniture wasn’t garnisheed.

(I have been waiting six years to use that word — “garnisheed.” I am not entirely certain I have used it correctly, but close enough.)

The place is going to be re-carpeted, so everything is neatly stacked

in the studio.

Except for whatever I need every day.

It turns out what I need every day isn’t very much.

The major appliances sit on hardwood flooring, so they are still in place.

All that’s left in the master bedroom is the bed and the television.

The computer is still on duty in the office. But the guest room is as bare naked as it was when I moved in here in 1993.

The look of the house right now

is unexpectedly wonderful. The sight lines are quiet. There are no unneeded objects anywhere. There were very few to begin with.

Curmudgeons generally don’t collect figurines, gimcracks, or doodads.

The house as it is won’t be featured in anyone’s Parade of Homes. But I like it, and I wish that it could stay this way.

Of course, I need a couch, and living room chairs, and my bookshelves in my office, and what else?

I have been in homes that looked

like three-dimensional scrapbooks.

Family photographs everywhere, mementos of travel, endless end tables, and decorator pillows.

I have decided to rely more and more on my memory than on objects to remind me of memories.

Bloomberg View’s Shira Ovide wrote an article about the technologies that have engulfed our lives.

Said she is “falling out of love” with them.

The new board listened to an informal poll taken on Facebook by an organization of Douglas County parents. Their poll was 600 people and guess what? 469 were in support of a national superintendent search.

How unbiased do you think that poll was?

The board will get the answer when they ask all the citizens of the county to

fund their liberal agenda for our public schools. Maybe all the liberals in the county will be willing to dig into their own pockets and pay more taxes when that election occurs.

At forums, the winning candidates were all in favor of rushing that tax election.

Do the math. How many people voted for the school board? How many will vote in a tax election? Possibly more than voted for the liberal school board.

o lately I have been testing a theory, and I have to tell you it has been so much fun. I have written about this quote before, I have been familiar with it for more than two decades, and I have read WINNING it hundreds WORDS of times, and I wanted to finally test the concept and see if it really did work.

“If you see someone without a Michael Norton smile, give them one of yours.” — Zig Ziglar Seems simple enough right?

We have all probably experienced this effect in one way or another. Someone catches our eye or attention and we smile, they smile back. Or someone smiles at us, and most times we smile back ourselves. Probably basic human nature.

Now, we have all probably experienced the other side of that too, meaning we offer a smile and get greeted with a scowl. Or someone smiles at us and we have no idea who

they are, but they must want something from us, so we duck for cover, head down, and try not to make eye contact, let alone smile.

So I had this bright idea that I would actually test this theory over a period of time and in different locations. I happened to be vacationing in Hawaii and each morning would go for a power walk, a run, or a casual, less intense walk.

And yes, it was Hawaii so most people should be happy or smiling anyway. However, you would be surprised at how many people just didn’t appear happy at all and a smile was the furthest thing from their face.

As I walked or ran, I started to smile. And not just smile, an over-exaggerated smile, kind of like eating a banana sideways. I made eye contact with people from 20 yards away coming in the opposite direction. And whether they were smiling at the time or not, by the time we were side by side, more than 90 percent of the people smiled back and even gave me a warm “good morning,” or “Aloha.”

I tested the theory in the stores I have gone to as well. The grocery store, the hardware store, walking down main street, and the results were exactly the same. Now maybe, you could argue that my ridiculously overexaggerated smile caught people’s attention. And maybe their smile back was just the beginning of a snicker or laugh, but it was still a smile. Not only did people smile, they engaged in conversations, asked questions as if I worked at the store, and wished me a good day or merry Christmas. Again, 90 percent success rate.

My final test came this weekend, the weekend before Christmas. The venue I chose was the mall. Yikes. I tried to smile while finding a parking spot and as I came close to seeing one open up, I was outmaneuvered by a faster car with a driver who wasn’t smiling, but rather sneering in victory. After finally getting lucky and finding a pretty sweet spot, I entered the lions’ den.

My attitude was good, my confidence high, and my resolve to smile and be positive was unwavering. The bigger I smiled, the more people turned away.

It was more like 10 percent of the people smiled in return and 90 percent of the people kept their head down and blazed through the mall with purpose, no time for that smiling nonsense.

purpose for being at the mall. There was a gift I needed to pick up. Still smiling and feeling good, maybe not as good as I felt on vacation, but my attitude and resolve were strong. And as I approached the counter to pay, there were three women working the registers. I greeted them with my ridiculously over-exaggerated smile and a hearty Merry Christmas, and they stood looking at me for a moment like a deer caught in headlights.

For a split second I thought that maybe I had overdone it just a bit. And then, they all looked at one another, turned back to me, smiled, and said “Thank you.” They thanked me because they said almost everyone that had been in the store so far that day had been rude, and they were not feeling the Christmas love or appreciated at all. So I shared my little testing of this Zig Ziglar theory, and they returned my smile and shared with me that no matter who else came in, they would smile back, even a ridiculous over-exaggerated smile filled with Christmas cheer. A little win but a huge victory.

It’s almost the new year. We can go into the new year with a frown and avoid making eye contact with others, or when we see someone without a smile, we can make a commitment for the new year to give them one of ours.

Mountain biking champ takes it to next level Elizabeth teen’s intense workouts pay off with a championship

Mountain biking rose from humble beginnings in the 1800s as a simple mode of transportation to a fringe sport in the 1970s. It gained global momentum in 1990 with the first world championships and today is turning out star athletes as young as high school.

And this year, one of those athletes hails from a Douglas County-based team. Zac Richardson, 17, of Elizabeth, took first in this year’s Colorado High School Cycling League state championships in October. His coach, Mark Neel, took coach of the year for the league’s south division.

Neel coaches the Castle Rock Crankers, made up of Castle View High School and Douglas County High School students from Castle Rock. When a student like Richardson does not have a local team he or she

Between Richardson and Neel are years of experience, a passion for cycling and a contribution to its ever-growing popularity.

Neel has been witness to that growth.

He got his start in competitive mountain biking in 1988 and participated in the 1990 world championship in Durango. The race — first of its kind and officially recognized by cycling’s world governing body, the International

Cycling Union — was electric, Neel said.

Mountain biking was still a young sport at the time, he explained, and its athletes were thrilled to see it enter the world stage.

“It was extremely grassroots. We weren’t racing for money or prizes,” he said. “It was very celebratory because it was the first time they had a world championships that was legitimately organized.”

Today an Olympic sport and popular across Europe, Australia and the U.S., mountain

biking’s roots in Colorado also remain strong.

The league in which Richardson and Neel participate, the Colorado High School Cycling League, was founded in 2009 and has grown significantly year by year. Fewer than 200 athletes participated in its first race in 2010. By 2014, more than 600 kids raced in the league, Executive Director Kate Rau said.

“I think it’s super fun and it’s a family-friendly activity where nobody’s benched,” Rau said when asked about what drives the league’s growth. “I like to think the reason that people keep coming back is that the race experience is pretty exceptional.”

This year, more than 1,200 athletes participated in the Colorado High School Cycling League series. Among them, Richardson, guided by Neel and other mountain biking pros helping to nurture the next generation of athletes.

Richardson’s taking of the state title in Eagle was a year in the making.

“When he made the decision last fall that he really wanted to go after the state championship,” Neel said, “we literally started his training about a week after state champion-

While mountain biking’s early riders rode for the thrill, Neel said, the sport today incorporates serious strategy, also requiring serious training.

The Colorado High School Cycling League’s varsity athletes complete four laps in a race. Each lap averages between five or six miles, Neel said. Riders often break off into groups to form an alliance, of sort, only to break that bond toward the race’s end when they make a dash for the finish line.

Each series race course is unique. This year’s conference championships took place in Nathrop, with the course gaining 520 feet of altitude per lap, according to race reports on the league website, coloradomtb.org. The state championship course was on the Haymaker and Extra Credit trails in Eagle, which are specially designed to support the league’s events.

In training Richardson, they spent days focused on doing long rides and others focused on shorter, high-intensity workouts, such as hill repeats.

A former local secondary school staff member is being investigated for allegedly recording clandestine cell-phone videos.

“They’re trying to maximize the square footage of these homes on a smaller lot, and that does sacrifice some of the yard,” Zaragoza said. “It’s challenging trying to have a yard, garage, and as much square footage as possible.”

Zaragoza sees what she does as a labor of love.

“I’m trying to provide a good home to families,” Zaragoza said. “I want to build a good product that helps the town. I’m trying to help property values. I hope people see that a lot of

passion goes into it.”

Zaragoza said she determines where to buy and build by looking at a block’s potential for further scrapes in the future. Though much of her activity in Englewood — and those of other scrape-off developers — have been focused on the town’s northern border with Denver, she recently completed a home south of Hampden on South Elati Street in which she bought a two-bedroom, 720-square-foot bungalow built in 1953 and replaced it with a towering duplex, each side

of which features four bedrooms and four bathrooms, and is for sale for $645,000 per side.

Does Zaragoza want to see all of Englewood scraped?

“Well, there are a lot of older homes that won’t be scraped because the lot sizes are too small,” Zaragoza said.

“But I think Englewood is a wonderful town now. The reality is that this is happening because of demand. As long as people want to move here and want these products, developments will continue to happen.”

It is now possible to appear to be clever-minded, articulate, informed, humorous, or interesting by pulling out a

phone and sending a message, but only after doing a bit of a search.

But in person, on the spot, extemporaneously, those attributes have become more difficult to encounter.

We are, sometimes, what we can look up. Look who is talking. Without the internet, I would sound like, uh, well, hmm, uh.

Outdoor ice rinks offer recreation, family fun

Front Range provides a setting for every personality

Finding something to do outdoors in the cold winter months can be a tricky proposition, especially if it doesn’t include heading to the mountains for skiing or snowboarding.

But in every part of the Front Range area — from urban shopping districts, to small towns, and even mountain communities — there’s a chance to tap into a bygone era and get some fresh air at the same time.

Taking to the ice at outdoor skating rinks.

“One of the most common remarks is from parents in awe that their children would choose a healthy outdoor activity over their more typical couch potato tendencies,” said Meg Denbow, director of communications at Boulder Creek Events, which hosts Boulder and Louisville outdoor rinks. “There are countless opportunities available for families to participate together in a Colorado winter experience without

having to drive all the way to the mountains.”

We looked at three different options for ice skating during the winter.

“We get about 20,000 skaters a season who take to the ice here,” said Janelle Hinton, marketing director at Belmar. “It’s amazing to see how many people come, and it’s because of the whole experience they can have here. Visitors can skate, grab a bite to eat, and see a movie, all in the same place.”

The busiest times are evenings and weekends, but with such warm weather this season, Hinton said

visitors are hard pressed to find a bad time to skate. But the best is during the night, when all the decorations light up.

“The environment at the rink is so beautiful, and has such great energy,” she added. “We have many repeat customers who come back over and over during the season.”

Red Rocks first New Year’s Eve concert moved due to the cold

n 2017, the year of “resist,” no genre of music embraced the fractured culture like rap and hip-hop.

The genre’s artists were all over the place, some delving into the political and sociological, while others tried to help us forget through catharsis and dancing.

COMING And now, some of ATTRACTIONS the biggest names in rap are coming together for what was supposed to be a significant first — the first New Year’s Eve on the Rocks concert.

The event was schedule to be held at Red Rocks AmphiClarke Reader theatre and organized by La Contes, Feyline, Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom and KS107.5, the evening features Migos, Young Thug, Lil Yachty, Post Malone, Dizzy Wright and King Green (of RDGLDGRN). However, weather predictions indicated the high for New Year’s Eve would be in the low 20s, causing the concert to be moved to the University of Denver’s Magness Arena, 2250 E. Jewell Ave. in Denver.

Migos had a breakout hit at the end of 2016, with “Bad and Boujee,” and that hot streak carried into 2017, with the release of their most popular, and best, album, “Culture.” The trio — Quavo, Offset and Takeoff — made several of the year’s best music videos, with “T-Shirt” and “Get Right Witcha.”

Young Thug has been one of the most dynamic and eccentric voices in hip-hop, and after releasing multiple albums in 2016, he released the country-influenced “Beautiful Thugger Girls” in June. The blending at first appears more than a little odd, but the end result is one of the year’s most enjoyable listens.

Lil Yachty and Post Malone both had a remarkable year as two of rap’s most notable and up-and-comers. In particular, Post Malone’s “Rockstar” has dominated the Billboard chart for eight weeks.

“It’s really amazing watching the kids grow up and come back to WinterSkate year after year, having so much fun with their friends and family,” Denbow said.

COMMENTS: People looking for an authentic mountain ice skating experience would be hard pressed to find a better place than the short drive to Evergreen Park and Recreation’s 8.5-acre rink, the world’s largest Zambonigroomed outdoor ice rink.

Cherry Creek’s Dimitri Stanley and Jacob Stanton of Chaparral headline the 2017 Colorado Community Media All-South Metro Football Team.

Stanley, the all-around senior wide receiver, was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year. Stanton, a senior linebacker, was honored as the Defensive Player of the Year.

The 26-player All-South Metro team was selected by CCM’s sports staff, with input from area coaches. Players were eligible from schools in the Littleton Public Schools District, all public and private schools in Douglas County, and Englewood and Cherry Creek high schools.

Stanley, the 6-foot, 178-pound University of Colorado commit, did a little bit of everything for the Bruins. He was a wide receiver, occasionally ran the ball, played some cornerback, returned kickoffs and punts, and was the team’s punter.

“I could have had a better year for the amount of targets I had but the time I actually had the ball I did pretty well,” said Stanley, whose father Walter played two seasons at CU and 11 seasons in the NFL. “It was better than last year definitely and it was kind of the way I

wanted it to go.”

He finished with 81 receptions for 1,192 yards and 20 touchdowns. He had 1,526 all-purpose yards. As a junior, Stanley caught 65 passes for 970 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Despite being double and triple covered at times, Stanley made several highlight reel receptions.

“We work on those in practice, and practice makes perfect,” he said. “I strive to make those catches in a game, and when I do, that just makes it that much better.”

Stanton was the leader of the Chaparral defense and had 128 total tackles with 19 tackles for losses, including four sacks. He intercepted one pass, had three pass deflections, caused seven fumbles and recovered two.

The 6-foot-2, 220 pounder was also a force on special teams, with two blocked punts and two blocked field goals.

“With all the hard work I put in during the off-season, I came out and had a way better season,” Stanton said. “It was a pretty decent year for me.

“I didn’t set any goals for myself, I just wanted to go out and have a good season. So I guess that would be a goal of mine and I reached that for sure.”

Stanton averaged 11.6 tackles a game as a senior and 9.1 in four seasons at Chaparral.

CHSAA will soon end mysteries of ‘next year’

The next year is approaching and Colorado high school enthusiasts are waiting for the Colorado High School Activities Association’s LegislaOVERTIME tive Committee to approve several proposals which could go into effect for the 2018-2020 cycle.

There are 15 committee reports and additional proposals waiting for approval at the Jan. 5 meeting.

Jim Benton It’s a new year and time for some changes, especially the reports and proposals for football and baseball that have drawn the most attention.

The football committee report outlined two-year alignments for leagues that are more logical than the waterfall format we’ve been stuck with for the past two seasons. Waterfalls are striking to view in the mountains but not as a football league setup.

Also the football committee en-

dorsed expanding the 5A playoffs to 24 teams, and one proposal backed by the committee would align football with the National Federation calendar, which would mean practice could start Aug. 6 rather than Aug. 13. Postseason dates would not be changed.

Another proposal that hopefully will be adopted is to lengthen the baseball season from 19 to 23 games during regular season for classifications other than 1A and 2A, which play district tournaments.

This would be a long-overdue change since it has been 52 years since Colorado has increased the maximum number of baseball games allowed.

Spring weather in Colorado is fickle.

Decades ago when I was coaching youth teams, I always said the last week of February was usually nicer than the weather in March, April and even May. So the extra games could be played in tournaments or something called doubleheaders, which used to be more common years ago.

Other Northern states that sanction baseball allow a maximum of more regular-season games than Colorado.

games on 23 dates and Idaho rules say teams are not to exceed 24 games.

There are many more proposals and committee reports that need to be passed, including the volleyball committee’s new bracket format for the state tournaments, cross country recommending a “run six athletes and score four” format, and creation of Foundation Benefit Contests for all sports to allow schools to raise funds for their programs.

Swimming rankings Mountain Vista swim coach Rob Nasser once again has been busy compiling rankings of individual girls swimmers and teams in hopes of gaining more publicity for the sport.

In the Dec. 20 rankings, Fossil Ridge and Fairview are ranked first and second in Class 5A with Cherry Creek third, Arapahoe fourth, Rock Canyon eighth, Mountain Vista ninth and Castle View/Douglas County 10th.

Heritage is third in the Class 4A rankings, with Valor Christian fourth and Highlands Ranch eighth.

Individually, Arapahoe junior diver Franny Cable has the best 5A score recorded in the state so far at 506.85

points, with Castle View/Douglas County’s Sam Tamborski second with 465.45 points and Ralston Valley freshmen Isabel Gregerson third with a 458.80 score.

There are several local swimmers ready to challenge with second place times. Horizon’s Charlotte Fieeiki’s time of 55.85 is second in the 100-yard backstroke, Jessica Beckwith of Rock Canyon has the runner-up time of 56.41 in the 100 butterfly and Delaney Smith of Arapahoe has clocked the second fastest time of 2:03.33 in the 200 IM. Cherry Creek’s 200 medley relay team is second with a 1:46.83 clocking but all the above times need to be faster to catch the leaders.

In Class 4A, Heritage’s Kylie Andrews has recorded the top times of 23.76 and 51.29 in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Valor Christian’s Ella Kirschke is tops in the 200 IM with a 2:06.96 clocking. Valor also has the fastest time in the 200 freestyle relay of 1:36.85.

Valor Christian football coach steps down

Valor Christian Athletic Director Jamie Heiner probably already is flooded with job applications.

Valor is seeking a new head football coach after Heiner announced in a news release on Dec. 22 that Rod Sherman was stepping down. Consideration of and response to employment inquiries for the position of head coach began immediately through Valor’s website: www.GoValor.com/welcome/careers.

Valor Christian, a private school in Highlands Ranch, has one of the most prominent football programs in the state and the vacancy will draw plenty of attention.

In 10 football seasons, Valor teams have compiled a 112-22 record in three different classifications and won seven state championships, while developing many Division I football players.

Sherman was the school’s first athletic director when Valor opened in 2007 and served as an assistant football coach and offensive coordinator during a run of four consecutive state championships between 2009 and 2012.

He took over the head coaching duties from Brent Vieselmeyer in 2013 and led the Eagles to three more state titles. Sherman, who has been

director of institutional advancement since 2015 when Heiner assumed the AD position, had a 57-11 record as head coach.

The Eagles were undefeated during the 2017 regular season but were upset by Grandview in a Class 5A quarterfinal playoff game.

“Coach Sherman developed our student-athletes and programs on the foundational values of Valor athletics: competitive excellence and Christian faith,” Heiner said in a statement. “His active commitment to both values has left a deep and lasting imprint on our school as a whole and in the lives of students and alumni.”

Sherman could not immediately be reached for comment but provided some comments in the statement that was released on Dec. 22.

“I will always treasure my time at Valor but it has become apparent to me that this is now the right time to step down and pursue other opportunities,” he said.

“I believe the future of Valor football is incredibly bright with numerous returning players and a strong freshman class this past season. I wish the Valor community and all players past present and future the very best in all their endeavors.”

Sherman expressed gratitude in his departing statement.

“I am incredibly proud of what all the Valor athletic programs have accomplished since I was hired as founding athletic director,” he stated.

“I was blessed to serve under coach Brent Vieselmeyer and it has been a very special blessing to serve as head coach for the last four years.”
