‘Save’ group falls short of petition goals in Parker Group aiming to rezone two downtown properties to open space has until Nov. 1 to cure difference

The two petitions asking voters to create a special election to rezone two downtown Parker properties to open space failed to receive enough signatures to receive a certificate of sufficiency by the town clerk, officials announced Oct. 22.

Each petition fell at least 1,700 valid signatures short of the mandated number. There will be no special election unless the group is able to make up the difference within 10 days, Nov. 1, according to town officials.

if it is from a person who is not a registered voter in the Town of Parker or is not consistent with the county’s voter registeration records, if the signature is illegible or if the address doesn’t match up with the name. More than 1,100 signatures on each petition were from people not registered to vote in Parker, the report states.

“I question whether 20% (of submitted signatures) were invalid,” said Terry Dodd, one of the group’s leaders, “because we were very particular about people being registered Parker voters.”

The town budgeted $125,000 in 2020 for a special election, which is still not impossible.

Shelli Mango, chair of the Downtown Business Alliance, said the DBA “respects and appreciates the approach and process in regard to the town listening to citizen’s voices.”

The group has until Nov. 1 to remedy the invalid signatures and gather an additional 300-plus signatures for each petition. Town staff will have five days after that to review the signatures again. If the petitions are still insufficient, the committee can file a request the petitions be reviewed by town council or appeal the ruling to district court.

Traffic-counting technology to ease major jams New car-counting tool will help adjust stoplights during worst gridlock

Parker is implementing new equipment to count the number of vehicles traveling along Parker Road throughout the day to manage traffic flow during unique circumstances.

The town entered into a $134,000 contract with WL Contractors, approved as part of the Oct. 21 town council consent agenda, to install responsive traffic signal timing on Parker Road.

The traffic lights along Parker Road currently operate on a fixed schedule based on average traffic times throughout the day. Rush hours have longer greens than non-rush hours.

The new responsive traffic signal timing will be able to count the number of cars and adjust for any uncommon traffic volumes.

Chris Hudson, public works manager for the town, said, for example, if

there’s an accident on I-25 that pushes more traffic to Parker Road, the only other north-south corridor through Douglas County, the system will be able to adjust accordingly. Little things, he said, can have big impacts on traffic on the town’s gateway road.

The device does not record video and has no “eyes,” Hudson said. It counts traffic and sends the information to a control room to adjust the traffic lights. Some municipalities are investing in “smart” adaptive signal technology that can adjust to traffic demands by the minute. Responsive signal tech, though still a “big leap” for the town in traffic technology, can only make adjustments for larger traffic issues that occur from unique circumstances.

Tom Williams, public works director, said the town hopes to install adaptive signal technology soon. For now, this responsive signal technology may not dramatically change commute times day-to-day, but it should end the days of monstrous Parker Road traffic jams.

“This system will allow us to develop a plan that responds to the traffic at any particular time,” Williams said.

Douglas County School Board President David Ray has promised that the board will review the district’s medical marijuana policy during the next board meeting at the urging of a student who uses cannabis products to treat a medical condition.

The student’s parents, Brad and Amber Wann, have spent more than a year advocating for the district to allow school nurses to administer medical marijuana to students who rely on it. Policy currently prohibits staff from doing so.

The couple attends nearly every board meeting to speak on the issue, sometimes accompanied by their children, including their son Ben, who was diagnosed with epilepsy as a child.

Ben uses hemp oil on a daily basis to prevent seizures. He takes the product each morning and night outside of school hours and does not need to bring it to school, the family said.

After the meeting, the Wann family remained skeptical Ray’s decision will result in a change of policy. Still, Ben is hopeful the district will begin allowing him to keep his nasal spray on school grounds.

“I would feel a bit more safe in the school,” he said.

Parker Road is expected to see a 25% increase in traffic volume by 2040, town officials said, and town and state officials are working together to develop a plan to accommodate those future needs.

The town’s planning department released the Parker Road Corridor Plan Oct. 18 mapping out the mobility and development guidelines for the future of Parker’s “economic spine.” Parker Road, Colorado Highway 83, is a state road owned and maintained by CDOT. The introduction of the plan defines the road as Parker’s “identifiable gateway corridor.”

Being one of two north-south corridors that goes through Douglas County from Denver to Colorado Springs, Parker Road is guilty of Parker’s worst gridlock during rush hour. Grueling hours of sitting in traffic and daunting trips to cross the street were some of the issues the town and CDOT looked at when drafting the plan.

“CDOT’s transportation investments in Parker Road have influenced the shape and economic performance of the different land uses along the corridor,” the plan reads.

“Some of these investments have proven to be unsustainable. Similarly, land development patterns have influenced the function and capacity of Parker—some proving beneficial but impacting the efficiency and safety of the highway.”

Parker Road sees about 60,000 vehicles per day near E-470 and about 35,000 near Stroh Road, according to Tom Williams, Parker’s public works director. By 2040, those numbers are expected to jump to 80,000 and 40,000, respectively.

The Parker Road Corridor Plan is a combined land use and transportation plan for the town and CDOT to “better manage growth and land development, improve travel safety and efficiency and prioritize future infrastructure projects. The introduction of the plan defines the road as Parker’s “identifiable gateway corridor.” To view the full plan, visit letstalkparker.com.

Bryce Matthews, planning manager for the Town of Parker, said the Parker Road Corridor Plan is a more detailed look at Parker’s highway, particularly the surrounding land use and mobility improvements.

“It’s the town and CDOT partnering to look at the future of Parker Road and address some of those issues,” Matthews said.

The planning department worked with CDOT as well as representatives from the E-470 Board of Directors and the Regional Transportation District and held two community workshops before drafting the plan this year. The plan now needs to go before the planning commission and council for public hearings.

Along with mobility improvements, the Parker Road Corridor Plan provides guidelines for design of commercial structures along the corridor to align the aesthetics of certain buildings, some as old as 40 years, to the look of the town.

The plan looked at the corridor in three sections: The Northern, Central and Southern subareas. The Northern Subarea, from the northern edge of town to Parkglenn Way, sees the highest traffic volume due to the confluence of major roads like Lincoln Avenue, Pine Lane and the E-470 interchange.

There’s no silver bullet to solving Parker Road’s traffic woes, but three main intersections were identified as areas for improvements.

One day, maybe 20 years from now, the Lincoln Avenue intersection will need its own interchange, Williams said, for the amount of growth expected in Douglas County in the coming years. Commuters pour from E-470 and Lincoln Avenue daily, packing Parker Road through the north end of town.

The intersections at Pine Lane and Lincoln Avenue have been identified in the plan as sites for “contextual intersection improvements,” meaning redesigns to the current intersection will be made to increase road capacity at those intersections. The Pine Lane and Lincoln Avenue intersections received a “failing” grade for efficiency, Williams said, meaning a person could get stuck at either intersection for as many as three light cycles.

Those areas are part of the Northern Subarea in the plan, which sees the highest traffic volume compared to the Central or Southern Subareas. The Central Subarea, though, is where the town wants to focus its mobility improvements for pedestrians as well.

The Central Subarea was the main focus of the Parker Road Corridor Plan, Matthews said.

“That’s the part of the Parker Road corridor that has some land uses and roadway purposes that are most misaligned and it’s also the place for transportation improvements that will make a difference in terms of Parker Road’s ability to move traffic and people for the long term,” Matthews said.

Creating a safe crosswalk is a priority for the downtown area as the vision for downtown looks west.

Woman suspected of sexual assault in winter shelter The suspect was charged with assaulting three young boys

A woman who stayed in a Douglas County winter shelter in December 2018 was arrested this month and charged with sexually assaulting three young boys while there.

Brittnie Simmons, 20, had been staying in the shelter network, which rotates church locations every night, Simmons for about a week and a half when the incident took place,

according to court documents. As of Oct. 25, she remained in the Douglas County jail on $20,000 bond. Simmons, who is charged with three counts of sexual assault on a child, is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 7.

Simmons began spending time with a family also staying in the network — a mother with seven children — documents state.

The children told deputies that the night of the reported incident, they were in one of the church gyms with Simmons playing the “pants game,” which includes pulling each other’s pants down, according to an arrest affidavit.

The kids later reported Simmons pulled one of the children’s pants down and hit their bottom, according to the report.

The suspected sexual assaults on the three boys, who were in second,

seventh and eighth grade, happened later that night after the family went to bed, according to the report.

The eighth-grader told police Simmons forced herself on him and threatened to report him for sexually harassing her if he told anyone.

The boy told police he was scared and didn’t want his family to be kicked out of the shelter, according to the affidavit.

The children’s mother, who had been in the hospital that day for a migraine, reportedly was asleep at the time. The next day, the eighth-grade boy told a church employee what allegedly happened to him and his brothers.

The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office responded and took statements from the children, their mother, church employees and Simmons.

Simmons denied having any inappropriate contact with the children, according to the report. She was

asked to leave the shelter but was not arrested due to a lack of probable cause.

When investigators and the children’s mother attempted to contact Simmons later, she continuously hung up and told them not to contact her again, the report states.

In April, Simmons contacted detectives when she was told she would not be able to secure a position with the military because of the open investigation, according to the report.

When confronted with the allegations during an interview with investigators, she “got verbally upset” and called the claims “ridiculous.”

Simmons acknowledged playing the “pants game” with the kids but said she did not pull any of the boys’ pants down or do anything inappropriate.

There are a lot of wrong ways to install a child’s car seat.

Thankfully, there are a lot of folks who know the right way.

“Many, if not most, car seats are installed wrong or could use a touch-up,” said Kirsten Harbeck, a child passenger safety technician with the South Metro Safety Foundation, a subsidiary of South Metro Fire Rescue. “The seat might not be tight enough, or the harness might not be snug enough. Some people turn the car seat forward-facing too soon.”

South Metro hosts free car seat inspections at numerous firehouses across their district, Harbeck said, that go over everything a parent needs to know to install and use their car seat safely.

“It’s a pretty robust appointment,” Harbeck said. “And it’s important.

Kids’ lives are at stake here.”

Colorado law requires kids to sit in rear-facing car seats until they’re one year old or 20 pounds, Harbeck said, but best practices recommend staying rear-facing “as long as the car seat

Other tips: take off kids’ coats, which can create too much play between a child’s body and restraint straps. Also, Harbeck said, many parents are unaware that car seats expire after a few years, when their plastic may become too brittle to effectively withstand a crash.

South Metro hosts car seat inspections at a rotating list of firehouses

every Wednesday and every other Tuesday, said South Metro spokesman Eric Hurst, and the Colorado Department of Transportation’s website lists dozens more, but even that may not be sufficient for parents who just bought a seat and need to use it right away.

“In a perfect world, everyone would be able to schedule an inspection,” Hurst said.

For those who can’t, South Metro firefighters can do on-the-spot inspections after parents sign a waiver of liability, though most firefighters aren’t certified technicians.

“If you’ve got time to schedule with an actual tech, you’ll get a far better education,” Hurst said.

Denver Fire Department, which covers Englewood and Sheridan, does not provide car seat safety checks, according to the City of Denver’s website.

Harbeck’s insights proved reassuring to Rebecca Gitomer, who scheduled a half-hour inspection at South Metro’s Trailmark station on Oct. 22, just a few days before Gitomer’s due date for her first child.

“If I was ever in an accident where my child got hurt, I’d feel horrible if I felt like there was more I could’ve done,” Gitomer said. “This gave me a lot more confidence.”

Evening of Hope raises more than $80,000 Wings of Hope for Pancreatic Cancer Research enjoys most successful event yet STAFF REPORT

Wings of Hope for Pancreatic Cancer Research had its most successful event yet, raising more than $80,000 for ongoing research at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora.

“This was our biggest and most successful benefit to date and we are enormously grateful to everyone who not only attended but gave so generously to fund the pancreatic cancer research at the University of Colorado Cancer Center,” Maureen Shul, executive director of Wings of Hope, said in a news release.

This year’s seventh annual Evening of Hope, the signature fundraiser for the growing foundation, was Sept. 28 at the Glenmoor Country Club in Cherry Hills Village. More than 300 people, the largest crowd

to attend An Evening of Hope, filled the courtyard on a fall evening for drinks and appetizers before enjoying an evening of survival and medical breakthrough.

“This was such a special evening with three courageous survivors sharing their stories and four of the most renowned physicians when it comes to pancreatic cancer sharing the research and treatment progress being made at the CU Cancer Center, Anschutz Medical Campus,” Shul said in the release.

Speakers included renowned physicians and grant recipients Dr. Wells Messersmith, Dr. Marco Del Chiaro, Dr. Sana Karam and Dr. Richard Schulick, director of the CU Cancer Center, whose ongoing and critical cutting-edge work is funded in large part by the year-round efforts of Wings of Hope.

“It was incredibly moving for me to see so many wonderful people come together to support this effort,” said Shul, who founded Wings of Hope in 2012 after losing two of her family members to the disease.

An Evening of Hope 2019 also boasted a live charity auction by Libby Pollack and a speech by blind golf champion Jeremy Poincenot.

“I know better than that anyway.

That raises suspicion,” Simmons said, according to the affidavit.

Simmons was arrested Oct. 10.

The shelter network, which operates from Nov. 1 through March 31, serves only women and children.

There is no law enforcement presence at the shelters, according to a spokesperson with the county.

Douglas County does not provide funding for the program. It does help coordinate the network and aids in transporting people to the shelters in various locations

“Our hearts broke when we learned of the incident in December of last year, and immediately reported the incident to law enforcement and Douglas County Human Services,” according to the statement. “We continue to make every effort to keep our guests as safe as possible while still providing care for those who desire to use the facilities provided.”

It was a pleasure and an honor to field your entries in my latest reader participation project: to name a piece of Craig Marshall music that means something to you.

Smith Responses were heartfelt and eloquent.

One reader, Jim Robie, Ojai, California, named 38 performers and groups who have “kept (him) company

The Teenagers’ lead singer, Frankie Lymon, was only 14 when the song was recorded. Lymon died of a heroin overdose at age 25.

Sue Williams, Highlands Ranch, said her song “Always, always, always inspires belly laughs and ear to ear smiles.” Here’s a clue: It’s played every Thanksgiving on KBCO. Jerry Derossett, Castle Rock, admitted his selection invariably brings him

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The right approach I want to praise Hanson, Meek and Ray for taking a stand on student safety. They made it very clear in the student-led forum where they stand. They have come to this decision by doing their research before becoming a BOE member.

Teachers are professionals in teaching, and law enforcement are professionals in law enforcement.

We need to let the professionals do their jobs. Teachers are already overworked, underpaid individuals that have had more and more responsibilities put on them over the years that one more critical and volatile responsibility (carrying a gun) just isn’t a good idea.

Also, if you have many guns in a school building, the possibility of an accident increases to an unacceptable level. Research shows our kids need a greater focus on mental health resources and a focus on inclusiveness rather than arming teachers.

Through their research-based track record of focusing on children and their needs, Hanson, Meek, and Ray will continue the positive momentum of focusing on the positive well-being of every child in the district.

As parents of children that have already seen a positive impact of increased focus on mental health, I

There was no “punishment” involved in the STEM School charter renewal earlier this year.

The charter agreement was about to expire and the school board offered a one-year extension to allow ample time to negotiate a new long term agreement in the wake of the tragic shooting there. Would critics rather let the charter expire and leave STEM with no valid operating agreement?

The characterization of the speaker asked to leave the podium is also incorrect. The speaker violated a rule that had just been explained. When asked to pause, he kept speaking, signifying he knew he was out of order. Because he didn’t stop, his microphone was turned off and security asked him to leave the podium, which he did without incident.

alloween is an interesting time of year. It is a time of year where children of all ages get to dress up and have a little fun pretending to be someone or something that they are not.

For some of us, our costumes are just a slight change or modification from who we really are, and for others, the costume is such an extreme makeover, no one recognizes who we are at all.

It’s not until the mask is removed and everyone has a good laugh or moment of WINNING disbelief.

WORDS Halloween is also an interesting time of year because it’s right about now when we realize where we really are when it comes to the achievement of our annual personal and professional goals.

It’s a time of year when we might realize Michael Norton that we may not be where we really wanted to be by now.

If we are meeting with and exceeding expectations, we know exactly who

we are and what we have achieved. If we are just a little off, we may still be wearing the costume or mask, and hoping no one notices, or that we can slide under the radar for a while longer. I mean it’s Halloween, and before we know it, Thanksgiving will be here, and then the Hanukkah and Christmas holidays will lead us right into the New Year. And now we start thinking and believing that it’s OK to keep the mask on, continue to wear our costume of performance until we can regroup and start all over again in January. After all, when we are wearing our costume, it’s easy to hide, isn’t it?

Indeed, Halloween is an interesting time of year. And it can also be an amazingly fun and energizing time of year. A time of year when we realize that there is still more than enough time to transform ourselves, and not just by putting on a superhero cape, we have time to make the changes we need and want to make so that we can transform our success.

There is always good news, and the good news is that we still have time to

I’m voting Hanson Meek Ray, because we don’t need petty conflict on the school board. We need to focus on students.

Connie Davison Highlands Ranch Fresh, new perspectives I am writing to give my support to two school board candidates: Kory Nelson. Kory has a broad background in dealing with students and their needs. For 30 years, he has worked with kids in the Juvenile Division. His experience and intuition is very well suited to the requirements of a DCSB member. In June of this year, I attended a session of the DUGCO Physical School Safety and Protection Committee, put together by the DUGCO County Commission. Because of his work in the Juvenile Division, he brought a unique perspective and set of scruples to the table for discussion. He is very aware that in today’s world, all options of school safety must be considered. On this committee he has worked with members from NSA, FBI, Homeland Security and CBI. Vote for a new candidate with a broader view of security for DUGCO Schools.

do an analysis of where we succeeded and where we failed. Good or bad, we can take the time to understand how we got there and assess our results. Once we know where we are and how we arrived there, we can better forecast our future and what it will look like if we stay the course of success, or if we don’t make the changes necessary to realize the results that we desire. And when we see how this all comes together, we can create a plan, allowing us to surpass our previous successes and overcome any challenges and barriers to our success.

And just like at Halloween where there is always a Mickey to match Minnie Mouse, and a Mrs. to her Mr. Potato Head, we never have to go it alone when it comes to planning for and achieving success. As a matter of fact, most people and companies who set goals and achieve their goals

have the support of a coach, a family member, a trusted friend, or an adviser. Now as you think about continuing to surpass your expectations or making the changes in your life so that you can surpass your expectations, think about who you can lean on to help you get there.

So how about you? Are you staying in costume and staying under the radar until January? Are you well past where you want to be and planning for even greater success in the future? Or can you use a little help in making sure you are using the remainder of 2019 to get ready for transformational success in 2020?

Planning like

Survivalists offers range of options for uncertain future

C

astle Rock resident Kiki Bandilla wanted to live a selfreliant life — the kind of life, as she describes it, in which she could sustain herself without depending on “institutions or grocery stores or medical facilities.”

“We get really upset if our internet is down. We don’t know what to do if we don’t have our car,” she said. “I like knowing how to make these things work. You have to deal with your own emergencies.”

The pursuit brought her to the Self Reliance Expo in Denver about five years ago, and she found herself, reluctantly, walking into unknown territory.

“I was thinking: ‘What is this going to be?’ I had placed a label that ‘selfreliant’ meant conspiracy theorist,” she said. “And I got there and thought it was the coolest thing in the world.

At that point, I developed my own definition of self-reliance.”

Fast-forward to 2019, and Bandilla is a well-known figure in the Colorado survivalist community, having purchased the expo in 2017 and transformed it into the National SelfReliance Project. Through the project, Bandilla encourages thousands to learn more about emergency preparedness, survival skills and living a simpler lifestyle.

That lifestyle has attracted all kinds of people, Bandilla said, but it’s also been known to attract a good deal of negative attention.

“People who don’t understand think these are the crazies stockpiling for the end of the world,” she said. “We need to throw away the labels. The people in this world are smart, normal people who have just taken different steps to protect themselves.”

Ready for ‘the bad times’ Survivalists and preppers are ready for everyday emergencies: blizzards, fires or even just a wrong turn on a hiking trip.

But make no mistake — many of them are also ready for a solar flare that takes out the electrical grid or a bioterrorism attack resulting in a nationwide pandemic.

“There could be all kinds of disasters: a meteor hit, a super volcano, a massive earthquake,” said Drew Miller, a prepper from the Denver area. “What you really need is a group. You’ve got to be able to protect yourself.”

Miller estimates the Colorado ranch, located in the mountains next to the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, has about 70 members, with many of them former members of the military, he said.

He added that for every veteran at the ranch, there’s also a businessman or businesswoman simply trying to be prepared.

How to get started It’s easy for those in the Denver area to learn more, Bandilla said, with the expo planning a date for 2020 and no shortage of resources available online, from full-blown websites to Facebook groups and pages.

Meeker, Colorado, resident Linda Cearley runs one of those Facebook pages, @milehighprepper, having been inspired to share tips and news with anyone looking to bolster his or her survival skills, she said.

“Most of my followers come from both cities and rural areas,” she said. “More questions on how to get started originate from the potential preppers within cities. Questions generally surround how much food or water should one set aside to survive, and what should be included in a bug-out bag.”

Experts like Cearley and Miller suggest everyone keep a bug-out bag, or portable survival kit, in their car, stocked with water, non-perishable foods, matches, flashlights, batteries, a blanket and warm clothing.

Meanwhile, for those who don’t know if they’re cut out for survivalism, there’s Miller’s ranch, which “outsources” preparedness by providing trained staff who plan to address every need during an emergency, he said. “All you’ve got to do is get here and follow instructions,” he said.

Keep positive momentum We moved to DCSD in 2012. I’d heard about the excellent school district and was pleased that my child could attend DCSD schools.

As I learned about the decisions of the former board, and how they were affecting the teachers and students in DCSD, I became concerned. Excellent educators left my child’s school for other districts, and I heard from other parents that the same thing was happening at their children’s schools. I got involved with the PTO and began volunteering with fundraising, and saw just how much those funds were utilized to compensate for the funding gap between what was received from the state and district, and what was needed for teachers and administrators to be effective.

After the last election, the atmosphere at my child’s school changed and became happier and more optimistic, upbeat and positive. The attrition rate across the district has dropped. Our PTO has been able to raise money for “extras,” like a digital marquee, and focus less on funding items more “operational” in nature. The new board is refreshingly open and transparent, and the regular updates from Dr. Tucker are greatly appreciated.

Anti-fracking request overreaches Anti-fracking group Colorado Rising lost at the ballot box last November by a vote of 57% to 43% with their Proposition 112, a poorly disguised oil and gas ban. Now, after Colorado passed the most comprehensive oil and gas reforms this state has ever seen, they’re trying again, only this time through the courts, asking a judge to halt the issuance of all new drilling permits until the new rules are implemented.

The majority of Coloradans support oil and gas development, as long as it’s done safely and responsibly, which is how it’s been done for years. The ban is a radical idea supported by few, and not backed by law. There’s no need to halt all new permits, especially when the head of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission says he’s upholding the spirit of the new law while not seeking to ban or harm the industry.

Colorado Rising does not act on behalf of most Coloradans, and I trust that the judge in this case will summarily dismiss their ridiculous lawsuit.

Vote for more progress After all three of my children were hurt by the “reforms” in Douglas County Schools from 201018, I joined the grassroots effort to elect our current board members in 2015 and 2017. In the short months since January 2018, when David Ray was elected chair, the board of education has hired a permanent superintendent and passed the first local school funding initiative in 12 years. Teacher pay is up, turnover is down and student test scores are up. But the board needs more time to repair the extensive damage done by reform.

Having attended every forum this fall, I am convinced that Susan Meek and Elizabeth Hanson will keep the best needs of our children and evidence-based best practices in mind when making decisions. Working both sides of ball Q&A with Lundquist Who is your favorite athlete and why?

He actually retired, but Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings. I wanted to become him one day but I wasn’t big enough.

What would be a perfect performance in your sport?

To have at least one interception, two touchdowns and over 10 tackles.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

Math. The teacher is very nice and the students in the class are good.

What do you like to do away from sports and school?

I just sit around the house and talk to my family. I don’t get to talk with them much.

Kole Lundquist skilled on both offense and defense

ole Lundquist is a senior on the Highlands Ranch football team who plays on both sides of the ball.

He is a running back who was the second leading rusher on the team and a linebacker who was leading the 5A South Metro League in tackles, one ahead of teammate Grant Stewartson, after eight games played.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Lundquist says

he enjoys playing on offense and defense for the Falcons.

“It gets me gassed from time to time but I like it,” said Lundquist, who didn’t reveal whether he likes playing offense or defense better.

“I’d say 50-50 because I can either tackle people or run over people,” he added. “I have improved this season. I would say just reading things faster. It is going real well right now.”

COACH’S TAKE: “Kole has been an absolute stud for us all year. He is truly a throwback ironman. Never complains and goes out and gives his all every play. He is deserving of All Conference and All-Colorado acknowledgment and I wish we had 100 like him.”

What are your plans after high school?

I’m going to try and go to college but if that doesn’t work then I will go to a trade school.

What is your favorite movie?

I don’t have a favorite movie. I go from movie to movie usually.

What are your thoughts when a blitz is called?

I’m ready to go get the ball on a blitz. It depends on whether guys are crashing to me but I just usually go through the gap that I am supposed to. I kinda live on defense.

Other than lesser competition, what is behind the Falcons’ four-game winning streak?

The team has finally become one and is playing together.

Well, some soccer coaches are c scared, too, as they fear that the i preparations made prior to the playoffs may not be enough to faced s the tough competition.

Like any other sport, injuries r play a role in a team’s readiness. o Recent playoff experience could o help teams, and tough non-leaguec OVERTIME schedules could 4 q be beneficial. s However, I coaches still worry about if n their teams are fi prepared.

“To be honest, in the playoffs everything is Jim Benton possible,” said Cherry Creek coach Wilmer Barrera. “Right now my job is putting everything down. We have to try to concentrate regardless of who is in front and focus on what we want to accomplish. You need to concentrate. The team that stays focused is the team that wins.”

Castle View coach Mark Burfeind has a few ways to prepare his team for playoff matches.

“We start a strength and conditioning program that starts in June,” explained Burfeind. “The high school season is long and very demanding with a lot of games in a short amount of time.

Castle View’s non-league schedule has also been a key component.

“The last component is to manage each player’s workload and recovery. With this many games, we schedule recovery days so we do not overwork our players and they are fresh as we start the playoffs.”

Anthony Romano of top-ranked Legacy emphasizes balance.

“Training sessions have a tendency to change,” he said.

“There is a fine line between too much and too little. Psychology comes in making sure the players are excited and not looking past an opponent. You have to have a balance between being calm and excited.”

And what about defense, since you always hear that defense wins championships?

Sprout, Stewart, Arapahoe girls claim crowns South metro schools finish strong at state cross country meet

Cole Sprout, Riley Stewart and the Arapahoe girls team were the big winners Oct. 26 at the Class 5A state cross country meet at the Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs.

Sprout, a Valor Christian senior, won his third straight state championship and second consecutive 5A title with another state record time. Stewart, a Cherry Creek sophomore, was a wire-to-wire individual winner. And the Arapahoe girls were the surprise champions of Class 5A. It would have been more noteworthy if Sprout had not won since he has dominated races the past three seasons, but he was once again the best runner in the class as he broke his own state record with a new standard of 15:12.7.

“The first half of the race was pretty controlled,” said Sprout, who was the 4A champion in 2017. “I got out pretty quick and felt good the first mile. The second half after those couple hills, I felt good. It was pretty gritty. It definitely hurt but I pushed it aside and finished strong.

“Yeah, the state record was definite-

ly on my mind and you never know how a race is going to unfold. The race went kind of how I imagined it in my mind. I’m gritty as a runner. I have a good tempo. When I feel like I’m hurting, I don’t feel like slowing down.”

Stewart, fifth a year ago, led the 5A title race by 11 seconds at the mile marker and never let up with a winning time of 18:12.3, which was more than 12 seconds ahead of runner-up Cameron McConnell of Cherokee Trail.

Like Sprout, she didn’t have a close competitor in the race.

“I feel like I ran pretty well,” Stewart said. “ I felt really super strong going into the last mile, and I just wanted to push myself all the way to the line. In all the races, I just try to push myself.”

Arapahoe girls coach Jeff Krause had to push himself to find words to describe the Warriors’ championship.

“I can’t even fine the words for what they did,” said Krause. “They did everything we asked. I was honestly in shock. They ran the perfect race. I knew it was going to be tough to beat teams like Creek, Cherokee Trail and (Mountain) Vista. I knew we had an outside shot, but those were great teams and we just put it together.”

Toward the end of the title race, it dawned on Krause that Arapahoe had a chance to win the state title.

“When I saw how close our No. 3 was,” said Krause.

Valor Christian senior Cole Sprout won his third state title on Oct. 26 at the CHSAA state cross country championships held at the Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs. Sprout was the 4A state champ in 2017 and has won the 5A crown the past two season. He broke the state record he set last year with a time of 15:12.7 in a wire-to-wire victory on Oct. 26.

gan Bergstom was 12th and senior Kira McGill came in 21st. Freshman Emily Lamontagne was 25th.

Arapahoe finished with 69 points.

Cherry Creek had 99 points and took home the runner-up trophy for the second consecutive season. Cherokee Trail was third with 157 points.

Two-time defending state champion Mountain Vista was fourth in the team standings, and the Golden Eagles were without senior Jenna Fitzsimmons, who was the individual state champion the past two seasons.

Fitzsimmons injured her hip in the regionals and was unable to race.

Other individual 5A girls top 10 individual finishers from south metro schools included McConnell (second), Valor Christian freshman Brooke Wilson (third), junior Taylor Whitfield of Valor (fourth), Cherry Creek freshman Addison Price (seventh), Regis Jesuit senior Isalina Colsman (ninth) and Douglas County sophomore Aidyn Woodall (10th).

Mountain Vista’s boys team, paced

by Jack O’Sullivan, who crossed the finish line in 10th place, was second behind state 5A champ Dakota Ridge.

Top 10 5A boys runners from area schools were Cherry Creek junior Parker Wolfe (third) and Rock Canyon senior Wes Beckham (ninth).

Sophomore Owen Nolan of SkyView Academy was second in the 3A boys race and helped the Hawks to a thirdplace finish in the team standings.

The opening day of the Class 5A softball tournament on Oct. 25 turned out to be the final day of the season for four south metro area teams.

No. 16 seed Ralston Valley pulled off the biggest surprise with a 6-3 firstround victory over Rock Canyon.

Two-time defending champion Legend and Valor Christian also dropped opening-round contests. Broomfield, seeded fourth among the 16 state tourney teams, ousted No. 13 Legend, 13-5.

No. 2 and eventual state champion Columbine shut out No. 15 Valor, 10-0.

Arapahoe, seeded sixth, notched a 12-1 first-round win over No. 11 Smoky Hill, but lost 11-1 to No. 3 Rocky Mountain in a quarterfinal affair the afternoon of Oct. 25.

Rock Canyon managed only two hits against Ralston Valley, with Erin Keen getting one with a 3-run homer and Ashley Sivaggi getting the other hit.

“In soccer it’s a combination of both defense and offense,” added Barrera.

“You can defend well but if you don’t score it’s tough to win. Defense is so important but in soccer you have to have goals.”

If recent playoff appearances are important, there are many teams that have played state tournament matches during the past three years.

Those teams are defending champion Arapahoe, Rock Canyon, Castle View, Cherry Creek, Legacy, Grandview and Ralston Valley.

And overall, Broomfield has won seven state titles followed by six by Arapahoe and Cherry Creek. Broomfield’s last title was in 2017, Arapahoe last season and Creek in 2010.

First-round games in the 4A playoffs began Oct. 30.

Rosengarten gets his jersey Valor Christian lineman Roger Rosengarten was honored at the school with a press conference on Oct. 21 by the All-American Bowl and was presented his All-American jersey.

Rosengarten, who has verbally committed to play at the University of Washington, is the only Colorado athlete selected to play in the annual East vs. West All-American game on Jan. 4, 2020 in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Honor roll Each week, south metro athletes

are selected for the honor roll, and athletes and teams were chosen for performances in games, matches and meets between Oct. 17 and Oct. 24.

Sophomore Cyrus Gulati scored the only goal of the match in overtime as Cherry Creek’s boys soccer team downed Arapahoe 1-0 on Oct. 22.

Senior Blake Rarog rushed for 201 yards and four touchdowns to help Legend’s football team whip Douglas County, 42-0, on Oct. 18.

Ben Beecher, a senior at Ponderosa who is the leading tackler in the 4A Metro League, was in on 14 total tackles, had one sack and two quarterback hurries in the Mustangs’ 42-7 football victory over Gateway on Oct. 17.

Eden McNally had a double and two home runs and finished with six runs batted in as Valor Christian downed Cherry Creek, 10-4, in an Oct. 19 regional softball playoff game.

ThunderRidge senior quarterback Brent Huber accounted for four touchdowns when he passed for 155 yards and rushed for 65 in a 30-6 football win over Rock Canyon on Oct. 18.

Senior Sebastian Garnica scored on a penalty kick in the final 25 seconds to give Littleton a 3-2 soccer victory over Green Mountain on Oct. 22 that assured the Lions of getting one of the two automatic state playoff berths from the 4A Jeffco League. Jorge Aguilar scored the first two goals for Littleton.
