Bond-funded projects underway at area schools Voters approved the $250 million measure in November

When students return to Ponderosa High School Aug. 7, they will be in for quite a shock, Principal Tim Ottmann said.

The 25-year-old carpet in classrooms — once a rusted orange color, stained and weathered from years of use — will be replaced with new gray carpet, as will scratched and worn tile throughout the building.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Ottmann said, sitting in his office in May, days before graduation. “I’m excited to see the pride.”

The $1.8 million flooring project is made possible by Ballot Measure 5B, a $250 million bond passed by Douglas County voters in November. Also approved was Ballot Measure 5A, a $40 million mill levy override that has gone toward increasing teacher pay, the hiring of 80 additional counselors and school programming.

The money is helping a school district that has struggled with funding for the past 12 years play catch-up, district leaders say.

“Thank you to the community because without 5A and 5B, this conver-

sation would look incredibly different,” Scott Smith, the district’s chief financial officer, said at a June 4 board meeting, when funding was discussed.

“If there is no funding there to meet those needs, it’s very difficult to accomplish those goals.”

In the 1980s and 1990s, Douglas County taxpayers approved several local bond measures. The funds were used to build new schools as the county’s population grew. The last time the county passed a local bond was in 2006 — when the school district’s newest graduates were in kindergarten. Bond measures were brought before Douglas County voters in 2008 and 2011, but voters rejected them.

The bond is going toward urgent building needs, new construction, transportation, career technical education and security, a component deemed critical by community members following the May 7 school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch. One student was killed and eight others were injured.

As of May, the district had spent $4 million of the bond on construction and another $4 million on building reinvestments, such as playgrounds and transportation, according to district staff.

Tier 1 items are building components that compromise school safety and risk school closure, such as a roof, fire alarm system, heating and cooling system, or generator.

Of the $250 million bond, $52 million to $67 million is allocated for Tier 1 and additional high-priority Tier 2 needs, which are critical building items that affect school programming, such as plumbing fixtures and high school athletic fields.

Facility reinvestments account for $83 million to $118 million, and $20 million is going toward technology needs, according to district documents.

Transportation needs account for $10 million, and $15 million is allocated for physical safety measures, including radio communications and cameras.

Current projects As of May, 25 schools were scheduled to receive Tier 1 improvements, according to district documents.

At the start of the 2019-20 school year, six of those will see changes in building automation systems, which control heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and lighting. The goal is to increase comfort levels for students and staff and save energy, ac-

cording to Eric McCain, the district’s project manager in construction.

Improvements to control systems at Ranch View Middle School in Highlands Ranch, Sagewood Middle School in Parker, Eldorado Elementary School in Highlands Ranch and Prairie Crossing Elementary School in Parker were underway at the end of the 2018-19 school year.

Next up this summer are Acres Green Elementary in unincorporated Douglas County and Legacy Point Elementary School in Parker.

The systems, McCain said, are simply outdated. The average age of the district’s neighborhood, magnet and alternative schools is 23 years, according to district staff.

“Compare it to a flip phone versus the current smartphone,” McCain said. “That’s what we are working with in a lot of these schools, just because of the age of them.”

Costs associated with control systems replacements range from $300,000 at the elementary school level to $800,000 at the high school level, according to the district.

At some schools, such as Ponderosa High School, the improvements underway are more “glamorous,” Ottmann said.

County commissioners form school security committee Members meet for the first time to strategize next steps

Though they come from different backgrounds and municipalities, nine members of a committee formed by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners to oversee additional funds for school safety have one thing in common: They want to protect students in Douglas County.

“At the end of the day, we are all parents and grandparents who are vested in this community,” Clint Dorris, chairman of the Physical School Safety and Protection Funding Committee, said at the committee’s first official meeting on June 14.

On May 28, three weeks after a school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch that left one student dead and eight others injured, Douglas County commissioners voted to allocate $13.3 million toward school safety initiatives.

Their plan outlined an ongoing $3 million to fund 61 schools resource officers in the county by the 2021-22 school year, contingent on a 50% annual match from schools in the

county, along with the formation of two committees that would dictate spending of a $10 million one-time gift.

One of those committees, dubbed the Physical School Safety and Protection Funding Committee, met for the first time June 14 at the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Substation in Highlands Ranch. The second committee, called the Supportive Mental Health for Students Funding Committee, will meet at 8:30 a.m. June 21 at the county’s Human Services Conference Center, 4400 Castleton Court, in Castle Rock.

At the June 14 meeting, members of the security committee — a mix of law enforcement, school district representatives, parents and security experts — strategized a plan for how to reach an agreement on school safety recommendations in just 30 days. Their goal is to present to the board of county commissioners by July 14.

The process, Dorris said, will be a “balancing act between transparency and good common sense.” Meaning while they want to be transparent to the public, some information will be kept under the wraps in order to protect details vital to school safety.

Also in attendance for a portion of the meeting were the three county commissioners, Douglas County School Board member Anne-Marie Lemieux and a handful of parents, who expressed disappointment with

Commissioners stressed that the solution will not be one-size-fits-all and encouraged committee members to be innovative in their ideas.

“Each of you brings an expertise that we are very fortunate to have,” Commissioner Roger Partridge said.

The week of June 17, the committee will meet for briefings on law enforcement protocols and the school district’s existing security measures.

The next public meeting is tentatively scheduled at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 24 at the sheriff ’s substation.

County will ask voters to shift tax dollars from justice center to roads Plan has support from sheriff’s office but splits county commissioners

Douglas County will ask voters this November to extend a portion of its sales tax scheduled to sunset in 2020 and reallocate the money from the county justice center to roads — a decision that recalled tensions from a heated debate over the Justice Center Sales and Use Tax that unfurled two years ago.

This time, the debate ended in what Douglas County Undersheriff Holly Nicholson-Kluth called “a good compromise.”

Money from the county’s 1% sales tax is divided among roads, the justice center and open space: Roads receive 0.40%, the justice center 0.43% and open space 0.17%. Of the Justice Center Sales and Use Tax, 0.13% is scheduled to sunset on Dec. 31, 2020.

Commissioners voted 2-1 to put two questions on the November ballot, one asking voters to approve extending and reallocating the 0.13% to roads and the second asking voters to allow for bonding of the 0.13% for 15 years. The second question is contingent on the first passing and

only allows for the county to move forward with the idea. Commissioners would later decide the amount of the bond and when it would be considered.

Three residents spoke on the issue at the June 11 board meeting, two opposed to the plan and one in favor.

Commissioner Lora Thomas — who made a similar proposal two Thomas years ago to divert justice center tax dollars to roads — said she would not support the 2019 version of the plan because it would not produce enough revenue for transportation needs.

The board estimates the 0.13% tax produces Partridge more than $9 million a year.

Commissioners Roger Partridge and Abe Laydon said they hope to use the funds to aggressively address traffic and transportation issues — a top concern among constituents.

Laydon The county grew by an estimated 33 people a day last year, according to the county demographer, contributing to issues around congestion and other traffic hazards.

Staff had prepared two drafts of a resolution for commissioners to consider during the June 11 public hearing.

The initial drafts included plans to take $10 million out of the justice center fund balance and put it toward roads as well. Laydon said the $10 million was crucial to jumpstarting transportation projects.

Partridge said he couldn’t support taking the $10 million from public safety needs. He stayed firm despite more than one attempt from Laydon to persuade him into approving the transfer.

But Laydon agreed to the resolution without the $10 million included, saying he was most concerned with moving the overall proposal forward.

The tax has been subject to contentious debate before.

In June 2017, Thomas formally proposed reallocating 0.23% of the justice center fund to roads.

The idea was met with fierce opposition from the sheriff ’s office, which said it needed the money for planned projects, and impassioned pleas from members of the public on both sides of the issue. Thomas said June 11 she’d felt attacked for her proposal during the 2017 debates.

At that time, the board denied Thomas’ proposal in a special business meeting that spanned two nights and included hours of public testimony.

Laydon was not on the board then, but he called Thomas a “visionary” for her 2017 initiative. He said now was the time to pass the 2019 version because it had support from key stakeholders like the sheriff ’s office.

“I’m still a bit baffled that she would not support her own proposal,” Laydon said after the meeting.

Thomas repeatedly said the plan does not provide sufficient funds for transportation needs in the county.

In an interview after the meeting, Thomas said she had suggested in

February a better compromise to her 2017 proposal by agreeing to reallocate 0.18% of Justice Center Sales and Use Tax dollars to roads and transfer $20 million from the Justice Center Fund to roads, rather than $10 million. The fund’s balance is $30 million. That proposal would have earned her support on June 11, she said.

Thomas said county staff in 2018 gave commissioners transportation capital projects reports detailing $2.5 billion worth of county projects needed by 2040, of which the county would be responsible for contributing hundreds of millions of dollars.

She cited population projections that the county will reach 484,000 people by 2040 — a 30 percent increase — as reasons more funds for roads are critical.

“I’ve worked on this for 2 1/2 years,” she said June 11, “and I’m disappointed I was not able to fulfill the vision that I think we need for this county.”

Nicholson-Kluth said the sheriff ’s office is examining alternative funding options for projects they would have pursued with the 0.13%. In one example, they are considering remodeling the existing emergency operations and dispatch center, rather than expanding or building a new facility, which could save between $10 million and $15 million. Nicholson-Kluth said the center is at capacity.

She also noted a recent financial offer from the board of $13.3 million for school safety measures. That alleviated other funding pressures on the sheriff ’s office, like supporting more school resource officers in the county.

She would not speak to the $10 million transfer because she did not know how that money was planned to be spent, she said, but called asking voters to reallocate the 0.13% a good compromise.

“I think it’s a win-win for all,” she said. “We’ll do with what we have.”

Third group of National Merit scholars named Four Douglas County School District graduates among those honored STAFF REPORT

Four Douglas County School District graduates were among those named 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program winners, according to a news release from the National Merit Scholarship Corp.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the National Merit finalists who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to

four years of undergraduate student at the institution financing the scholarship.

The winners are: • Aldrin Feliciano, STEM School Highlands Ranch, plans to study mathematics • Sarah Gates, Ponderosa High School, Parker, plans to study engineering • Valerie Kakos, SkyView Academy, Highlands Ranch, plans to study neuroscience • Alexis Roth, ThunderRidge High School, Highlands Ranch, plans to study government service.

More than 1.6 million students from 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship competition. Recipients of the final round of National Merit college-sponsored awards will be announced July 15.

STEM shooting suspect’s lawyers want case moved back to juvenile court

The younger suspect in the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting was back in court June 14, where attorneys continued their efforts to transfer his case out of adult court and back to juvenile court.

Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler chose to charge 16-year-old Alec McKinney as an adult in May, saying then he planned to charge the teenager with first-degree murder. Defense attorneys immediately voiced their hope to have his case returned to juvenile court.

McKinney was charged along with Devon Erickson, 18, on suspicion of carrying out the May 7 shooting that left senior Kendrick Castillo dead and eight more students injured. Court records made available online last month showed the suspects faced 48 charges each. Erickson was in court one week

earlier.

The case has been suppressed, meaning documents detailing allegations against the suspect and their formal charges have not been released.

During the June 14 hearing in Castle Rock, District Court Judge Jeffrey Holmes set a preliminary hearing and reverse transfer hearing for the teenager in November, setting aside one week for the proceedings.

Defense attorneys had requested two weeks and that the appearance not take place until January. Their position was similar to what defense attorneys said when the preliminary hearing for the older suspect was scheduled.

They needed time, said lawyers for both suspects, because of the sheer volume of discovery they will be assessing in the weeks to come.

Ara Ohanian, McKinney’s public defender, said his team received 21,000 files and 600 hours of audio and video footage. They were expecting five times

as much discovery would be provided to them by the FBI in the future.

It would all take months, he said, to analyze and prepare for a preliminary hearing — the proceeding where a judge determines if there is probable cause in a case. Erickson’s preliminary hearing was scheduled for three days in late September by a different judge.

Brauchler said the numbers given by Ohanian could be misleading. Much of the information in discovery would repeat itself and it includes footage from dash cameras or body cameras that would not need long to assess, such as vehicles that sat parked at the scene or officers walking the school grounds.

He’d argued the week before and on June 14 that a preliminary trial is not a “mini-trial” and requires less preparation than a trial itself, something Holmes echoed.

Defense attorneys also requested the court hearings for the juvenile suspect be closed to the public moving forward

but their request was denied. Holmes said in front of a galley filled with STEM School supporters, including Kendrick Castillo’s parents, that the public had a significant interest in the case. He also said the defendant was entitled to open court hearings.

“This is still a criminal case,” he said.

He agreed to keep the case suppressed for the time being. If or when case files will be released remains unclear.

Holmes was not the original judge presiding over McKinney’s case.

District Court Judge Theresa Slade recused herself from the case, though she remains the judge presiding over the Erickson’s proceedings.

The reason for her recusal was not explained in court on June 14.

Brauchler declined to say why the judge was changed when asked by reporters following the hearing because the case is suppressed.

In a banquet hall filled with mental health professionals, three Douglas County mothers sat in front of microphones and began talking.

They shared thoughts about parenting their children with mental illness, the hurdles they jumped navigating the mental health system, stigma around mental health and the toll it all took on their families.

The first mother to speak, Stacie Brown, of Highlands Ranch, said her son has struggled with mental health and substances for years, but it wasn’t until recently that he was officially diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

The past year was his worst. He was hospitalized 16 times. He tried six different rehabilitation centers. He’d begun self-medicating with alcohol as nothing the family tried addressed his underlying mental health issues, she said.

“It’s still very fresh,” she said, choking up. “We still struggle.”

He’s on medication now that’s kept him stable over the past two weeks, but their journey is on-going and she’s speaking out, she said, to help other families learn what resources are available.

The women shared their stories June 17 at the Lone Tree Arts Center during the Douglas County Mental Health Summit, co-sponsored by the Douglas County Mental Health Initiative, Douglas County and Colorado Community Media.

“The Mental Health Initiative is a very unique partnership,” said Douglas County Commissioner Roger Partridge, adding that the group’s main goal “is preventing those in need of mental health services from falling through the cracks.”

The panel of women, all representing local families impacted by mental illness, explained through first-hand accounts how accessing mental

health care is difficult for families.

They had struggled getting their children to understand they are mentally ill, to accept help or treatment and to commit to treatment once in a facility. They talked about a resistance from the broader community to speak about mental health as compared to physical illnesses, and the stigma placed on people with mental illness.

Mary Beth Kopec, of Roxborough Park, who sat on the panel with Brown, said her neighbors no longer speak with her because they are afraid of the family, which adds to her anxiety when she needs to call first responders for assistance with her son.

“Calling the police in the middle of the night, the fear, the gut-wrenching, the heart-wrenching agony that you feel,” Kopec said. “The sadness and the heart-wrenching feeling for my son. ... He must be in agony.”

She’s been utilizing the mental health system for 20 years to help her son, who is now 45 years old and occasionally has violent outbursts because of his bipolar and schizoaffective disorders.

Kopec and other panel members described further barriers to care, including the cost of medication, knowing whom to call and finding resources.

The Douglas County Mental Health Initiative, which began in 2014, is a partnership of more than 40 organizations looking to close gaps in the mental health system and make F the journey easier for families like Brown’s and Kopec’s.

Man arrested in connection with fatal crash near Parker Jesus Angel Estrada-Rivera, 19, has been charged with vehicular homicide STAFF REPORT

A Denver man was arrested in connection with a fatal car crash in Douglas County June 15.

The Douglas Country Sheriff ’s Office arrested Jesus Angel EstradaRivera, 19, June 17. He was charged with vehicular homicide, driving with a license under restraint and no proof of insurance and was being held at the Douglas County jail on $50,000 bond.

Deputies responded to a call of a crash at the intersection of Powhaton

Road and Sampson Gulch Way, an area of unincorporated Douglas County north of Parker, at 7:21 p.m. June 15, according to a news release. Multiple 9-1-1 calls reported a truck hit an SUV at the intersection and one person was trapped in the vehicle.

Aurora Police Department officers arrested the driver of the truck, Estrada-Rivera, at the scene, the release states.

The driver of the SUV was transported to a local hospital and later died. The Douglas County Coroner’s Office has not given an official positive identification of the victim or cause of death.

The Douglas County Traffic Crash Team is helping investigate the crash and preliminarily believe high speed contributed to the crash, according to the release.

Larree Chetelat, former Lowry commander, dies at 88 Vietnam veteran worked on Hubble Space Telescope

Former Lowry Air Force Base commander and father of five Larree Chetelat died on June 13 after an illness. He was 88.

Chetelat, a Littleton native who lived in Parker, was a 1949 graduate of Littleton High School, said his daughter Kristine Chetelat-Ament.

Chetelat married Dona Lilly on July 22, 1951, at Littleton Methodist Church, and graduated Colorado State University in 1953. Chetelat entered the Air Force as a second

Shannon Breitzman, of Health Management Associates, said parents should be willing to have hard conversations with children on other facets of life so that youths feel comfortable coming to parents if they ever consider suicide. Health Management Associates is a health care consulting and research firm.

The panel of mothers also had suggestions for improving mental health support. More communication among agencies was one tactic, but so was training in compassion. The women understood people working in the mental health system are overwhelmed with large workloads, but more compassion for the people they

lieutenant and was called to active duty in 1954.

As a pilot and navigator, Chetelat flew combat missions in Vietnam, and earned medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Later promoted to colonel, Chetelat at one point served in the Pentagon, and served as the commander of Lowry Air Force Base from 1981-82.

After retiring from the Air Force, Chetelat worked for Lockheed Martin, and worked on the Hubble Space Telescope, Chetelat-Ament said.

Chetelat also authored four cruise ship travel guides. Chetelat enjoyed golf and swing dancing, his daughter said.

Chetelat is survived by his wife Dona, five children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

When asked what topics they were most interested in learning about at the next summit, which has yet to be scheduled, navigating the system, resources, collaboration and prevention were some of the most voted-for issues.

Partridge, in closing the summit, praised the panel of women for speaking out and urged attendees to continue improving the mental health system.

“I ask you,” he said, “and I know you will: Keep the conversation going.”

‘Part of our identity’ Republic of Georgia is home to delegates who visited Parker for tips on wine tourism

Wine, at least to the winemakers, is something spiritual to the people of the Republic of Georgia. At the Boondocks family center in Parker on June 13, Elene Bukhaidze told a story about how soldiers would tuck the roots from a grape vine plant in the back of their collar, so if they were to die, grapes could grow in the soil they lay upon.

“It’s a circle of life. It starts from birth and we put everything into it,” Bukhaidze said.

From June 3 to June 16, a group of Georgians visited the United States and Parker to learn how to make their oldest industry flourish.

The Rotary Club of Parker hosted five social entrepreneurs, winemakers and hospitality workers, who visited Grand Junction, Palisade, Fort Collins and Greeley to learn about various strategies to boost rural tourism industry in their home country. Ron and Jan Penner hosted the group at their Pinery home. On June 13, the

Management Organization of Samergrelo-Zemo Svaneti Region; Aleko Sardanashvill, founder and manager of Saranashvili’s Winery and Guest House; and Miriani Tsintsadze, adviser for international relations and economic development for the City of Baghdadi. A professional interpreter from Washington, D.C. accompanied the group as well.

Throughout their two weeks in the

United States, the group of representatives learned about how to better market the country’s expansive wine industry and tourism opportunities.

Their trip included presentations from the Colorado Tourist Office in Denver, meeting groups such as chambers of commerce, hotel associations, guest ranches, wineries, breweries and economic development authorities.

The trip was facilitated by the Open World Leadership Center.

The Open World Leadership Center has a network of more than 28,000 alumni in strategic countries like Russia, Ukraine, Republic of Georgia and other nations in the Balkans, Caucasus, Central Asia and Eastern Europe.

Open World supports legislative diplomacy efforts for members of Congress, conducting exchanges that establish relationships between leaders and their U.S. counterparts.

Participants are provided with exposure to American politics, accountable governance and citizenship diplomacy.

The Rotary Club of Parker is a volunteer service organization that helps others in the community.

“It’s part of our life. It’s part of our identity,” Sardanashvill said. “If you look at our map, our region, nobody around us drinks wine … For us, for Georgian people, it’s how we survive.

It’s like language, so we’re trying to keep it no matter if it is profitable or not profitable. Just to have it and save it.”

This summer, while students and staff are out of the building, the main focus is flooring. The cracked concrete leading up to the entrance will be replaced, as will tile in the commons. Almost all other flooring in classrooms and hallways will be replaced with carpet, which will have a 20-year warranty, Ottmann said.

“It will be more quiet,” he said, “but also more challenging to keep clean.”

Ponderosa — the district’s second oldest high school behind Douglas County — is slated to receive $7.3 million of the bond, which will also go toward replacing the school’s 35-year-old boiler, air handlers and control systems — projects that are next on the list, Ottmann said.

Also in Parker, Legend High School’s turf field was long overdue for a replacement. More than 10 years old and past its lifespan, the field was becoming a safety hazard for students, according to Principal Jason Jacob.

Students from Legend and Cimarron Middle School, who utilize the field most nights until 8 p.m., were susceptible to concussions and ankle injuries due to the ripped and matted material, Jacob said.

“It’s just time,” he said.

The bond covered $441,500 to install the new turf field, and a donor

funded $18,500 to color the field royal blue, with orange end zones.

A community survey revealed that 85 percent of Legend families were in favor of using the school’s colors, Jacob said. The colored turf field is a first for the district.

What’s ahead Community members can expect to see some larger projects take form later this year, district documents show.

At the top of the list for new construction is a 25,000-square-foot addition to Castle View High School in Castle Rock, which is over capacity by more than 360 students. The school utilizes eight mobiles, or outdoor structures, with two classrooms each.

The $13.2 million project is expected to begin this December and complete by December 2020, according to district documents.

Schools including ThunderRidge High School in Highlands Ranch, South Ridge Elementary in Castle Rock and Iron Horse Elementary in Parker are scheduled to receive roof repairs, along with control system improvements.

Funds from the bond, McCain said, are helping solve the district’s ongoing struggle of repairing needs with temporary fixes.

“Thank you to voters for passing the bond, because it’s much needed,” McCain said. “We were limping along here for so long, just doing Band-Aid fixes.”

Hey kids, life is nice without that device

I

was standing at the crossroads a few years ago. Along came a fellow with a guitar.

Said his name was Robert Johnson and that he had something to sell, but not to me.

I told him, “Me too.”

He gave me a smile and then he played a tune. I found out later it was a song called “Dust My Broom,” which makes no sense grammatically, but it sure sounded good.

After he was through playing, he said, “What are you asking for in exchange?”

I told him I had a strange request.

I said I wanted resistance.

“Resistance to what?”

“Excessive social media usage.”

He said, “Man, what are you talking about?’

I told him I wanted mental health.

He said, “You know what that means, don’t you? You’ll have to give

up your phone.”

I told him, “I can do it.”

New research shows that “phones raise student anxiety,” according to an Associated Press article written by Carolyn Thompson.

She cites a National Education Association newsletter that Craig Marshall labeled the anxiety Smith a “mental health tsunami.”

She said, “Research now points to smartphone-driven social media as one of the biggest drivers of (student) stress.”

She referred to a South Carolina high school teacher’s classroom experiment that had each student document every smartphone notification they

received for one hour.

“One girl got close to 150 Snapchat notifications,” the teacher reported.

Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State, said, “What a lot of teens told me is that social media and their phones feel mandatory.”

An editorial in the American Academy of Pediatrics’ journal stated, “Aberrant and/or excessive social media usage” could contribute to teenage “feelings of isolation, depressive symptoms, and anxiety.”

I have not seen a teenager in public in the past 20 years who wasn’t on the phone, holding a phone, kissing a phone or dancing with a phone.

A school in Maine, Belfast Area High, tried an experiment of its own that failed miserably.

No cellphones for a single day.

I got what I wanted at the cross-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Self-defense is our right In her letter to the editor last month, Darcelia Beck correctly notes that we cannot control human behavior. She claims we can control inanimate objects. She proposes we lock up privately owned firearms in government facilities.

Government attempted to control inanimate alcohol. Prohibition yielded speak easies, bath tub gin, homemade beer and wine, stills, and booze smugglers. It did not change human behavior. Rather, it made some criminals rich.

We’ve had a war on inanimate drugs since the Reagan administration. Civil liberties have been under assault. Vast sums of public funds have been essentially wasted. Hundreds of thousands of fellow Americans now have criminal drug records, which makes it hard to get good jobs. Yet somehow we have more overdose deaths than firearms deaths. Drugs are plentiful. Prohibition has not changed human behavior, and some criminals have become filthy rich.

It is pure fantasy to think that Americans will meekly give up their means of defending themselves, their families and property, and their communities. It is also pure fantasy to think that criminals and others bent on harm will be locking up their guns in government facilities.

Americans have had the right to keep and bear (carry about) guns since before the Revolution. More than one Supreme Court decision has supported that individual right (e.g. Miller and Heller).

right. A collective right is no right at all.

Personal self-defense is an inherent right of all creatures with spines. The proper tools to accomplish self-defense cannot be locked up miles away at a government facility.

G. Arthur Bentzen Castle Rock School board merits support This is not a pro- teachers’ union letter, and it’s not an anti-teachers’ union letter.

It’s a common sense letter. As a Douglas County mom who has put in countless volunteer hours over the past seven years working to help elect school board directors who support our public schools and our teachers, I was dismayed to read that one teacher was “ashamed and disappointed in having supported those candidates.” I am immensely proud to have campaigned for all seven current directors, as well as those who ran before them. All seven work long, hard, unpaid hours to fix what was lost under prior leadership, but it takes time. All seven keep the students first and foremost in their decision-making, as it should be.

Few people will ever agree with 100% of an elected representative’s decisions, and opinions will differ regarding a collective bargaining agreement, even among those who support the same goal of a strong system of public schools where students and employees are valued, buildings are adequately maintained, and we’re not

roads. My mental health seems fine.

(Maybe not everyone would agree with that.)

All I know is I don’t have a speck of anxiety when I realize I have left home without my phone.

And I don’t have an iota of anxiety when I haven’t checked my messages for 10 minutes.

It might help to be enormously unpopular in the first place.

I do email all over the place, respond to every column comment I receive, and appreciate all of the offers from wealthy potentates and lonely Russian women.

However, I am smartphone free.

If there is a teenager within the sound of this column who does not let a smartphone control your life, I’d like to hear about it. Just don’t call me.

Keep yourself humble to avoid a stumble

ne of my favorite things to see is a humble winner. Not only a humble winner, but also a humble leader who willingly shares the victory and gives credit to the team around them, their friend, or a family member.

In a world where outrageous behavior seems to garner the WINNING most attention, WORDS I still try and purposely find examples of those humble winners out there who let their actions and results speak for themselves and show gratitude Michael Norton and appreciation for those who have helped along the way.

Now I love entertaining and exciting events. It’s good to see people fired up about their achievements and success. As a matter of fact, sometimes those

feats are worthy of our applause.

The walk-off home run, the hole in one, the artist and song we love winning the Grammy, the movie we enjoyed so much winning the Oscar, the salesperson on our team who just closed a massive opportunity and so many other examples. I love it, I applaud it, and I appreciate it.

What I appreciate more, however, is when the athlete thanks their teammates and coaching staff or acknowledges their family that has supported them along the way. The celebrity who receives their award on stage and gives thanks to God, their family, and their co-stars. The golfer who tips their hat, picks up their ball, and moves on to the next hole.

When things seem to be going really well, maybe even when things are going fantastic for us personally or professionally, it becomes easy for us to get caught up in our own success. Adoration and praise go right to our head, and we forget our humility.

After the funeral — a look at being ready

he cause of death was influenza. For those of you following the story of my father-in-law, he spent nine weeks in the hospital due to the flu. While it is not unusual for a 90-year old to pass away, these circumstances were bizarre FINANCIAL to experience. First STRATEGIES the flu, then a fall, then complications with swallowing, and a myriad of everything that could go wrong, did.

Fortunately, Dad was lucid for several days during these events. While no one Patricia Kummer ever spoke about the fact he would never go home again, we kind of talked around the subject.

“Hey Dad, do you still have the safe deposit box?” “Whatever happened to Grandma’s Hummels?” “Did I see a

safe in the basement? Do you remember the combination?” It was a little private investigating along with ice chips and IVs. Everyone knew he was not going home except him, so it was a bit awkward.

Luckily, he had made his funeral arrangements when his wife died and most decisions around the ceremony and burial were in place. Except, don’t ever request a “duplicate of my wife’s arrangements” unless you want a pink lining in your casket. Luckily, we caught that one.

We were in no hurry to dig into the will and estate documents, but it turned out that cleaning out the house was one of the best ways to mourn.

All of the kids and grandkids were together working. We were laughing at old pictures and picking out mementos.

As we came across financial statements, we quickly saw he had beneficiaries listed on everything and there would be no need to open an estate or go

through probate. Another toast to Dad! A death in the family reminds us that life is fleeting and there is no reason to delay getting your own house in order.

If you do not have a trust, you should consider doing the following: • List POD (Pay on Death) on all bank accounts and CDs • Add a signer to your safe deposit box. It will be sealed instantly without one.

• Put TOD (Transfer on Death) on all investments. Consolidate your mutual funds and stock certificates into a brokerage account, then this will be easier.

• Add a beneficiary deed on the house title.

• Take your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) early in the year. If you pass away without taking it, there may need to be an estate opened to accept the RMD. • Buy a shredder and start using it.

Don’t keep old, confidential papers around for someone to try and deter-

mine if it is still valid or not.

• Consider putting a family member on the car title.

• Identify any collectibles so they don’t end up in the garage sale.

• Leave a list of passwords, safe combinations, where extra keys are, etc.

For those of you who have a trustbased estate plan, make sure everything you wish to pass correctly is either titled in the name of your trust or lists the trust or individuals as beneficiary.

Then spend as much quality time with your loved ones as you can. You can create a legacy of family values just by sharing stories and time together. These will be the most precious things you leave behind.

• Mary Pauline Roeder, 93, of Watkins, Colorado, passed away on June 2, 2019. She Was born in Moline, Illinois on September 30, 1925 to Harry and Addie Hamerly. Her son, Robert Roeder survives and will cherish her beautiful memories. She was an amazing child of God, and shared her faith, encouraging words, and compassion with many, many friends throughout her life. MARILYN ANN ROSENTHAL

January 5, 1928 to December 23, 2018

Marilyn Ann Rosenthal— a devoted mom and enthusiastic teacher who fostered her students’ character as well as their intellect— passed away of natural causes in Colorado Springs, CO, on December 23, 2018, her family at her side. She was 90-years old.

Marilyn’s temperament was the quality that differentiated her from most. A John Wesley quote exemplifies her life: “Do all the good that you can, by all of the means that you can, in all of the places that you can, at all of the times that you can as long as ever you can.”

One of five children, Marilyn was born on January 5, 1928 in North Platte, NE, to Esther Fithian, a teacher, and Glenn Fithian Sr., a farmer. Raised with strong mid-western values in a loving, rambunctious family, she sensed her calling early and moved to Fort Collins, CO, entering Colorado State University (CSU), where she graduated with honors with a BA in Sociology and Education, in 1947. She went on to earn her Masters in Guidance and Counseling at the University of Denver.

Marilyn met Denver native Ken Rosenthal, a WWII veteran, at CSU. The couple had two children, a daughter, Jeannie, and a son, Gary and lived on a small ranch near Parker where they raised Hereford cattle. They thought of their nephew, Tom, as a son.

Marilyn’s teaching career began in

a one-room schoolhouse near Sedalia, CO, close to her parents’ ranch. She went on to teach in Littleton, Parker and Franktown.

She taught for many years, assuming leadership roles, including President of the Douglas County Teacher’s Association. She enjoyed hunting for arrowheads, both a hobby and lifelong study.

Above all, Marilyn’s life was dedicated to helping others. One of a small group of people who founded the Hilltop Community Church near Parker, CO, Marilyn arranged for the congregation to first meet in a tiny one-room school. Eventually, she helped raise money to build a beautiful church on donated land.

Marilyn is survived by her sister, Barbara Resmo (Mike); two children, Gary Rosenthal and Jeannie Rosenthal Dickman (Jerry); her nephew, Tom Miller (Patti); two grandchildren, Ryan Rosenthal and Samantha Armstrong; and 13 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ken Rosenthal; brother Dick Fithian; sister Betty Malmkar, and brother Glenn Fithian Jr. Service will be held on June 29th 2019, at 10 am, at St. Phillip in the Field Episcopal Church, 397 North Perry Park Road, Sedalia, Colorado 80134. Reverend Janet Fullmer presiding. Internment of ashes following.

he day before the Continental Congress’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote a letter to his wife on July 3, 1776 about how he hoped succeeding generations would celebrate Independence Day. “It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty,” the letter, on the Massachusetts Historical Society’s website, reads.

“It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

Adams might be proud to see how the Denver metro area is following through on his exhortation, with fireworks lighting up the sky, sporting events, kid festivities and more.

Cars ‘Cruise In’ to Castle Rock

From newer Mustangs to older vintage cars, there was something for everyone at the 11th Annual Classic Rock Cruise In car show on June 15.

The event usually takes place the day Saturday before Father’s Day and fills downtown Castle Rock with more than 300 entries from car owners and clubs throughout the state.

Clay Tynan attended the 2019 event with his wife, Cami, and two children, Norah and Garrett. It was the Centennial family’s first time attending Castle Rock’s show. Tynan said the event did not disappoint.

“I’ve always heard this was a good one,” he said. “It’s cool, it’s a good show.”

The show is organized and produced by the Vintage Car Club and the Castle Rock Downtown Merchants Association. Proceeds are shared by both groups and a portion are donated to local charities and scholarships.

Slow down, stay alert on ramped-up ‘Gap’ construction

It’s officially one of the busiest travel seasons of the year for the portion of Interstate 25 running between Castle Rock and Monument, and the entire 18-mile stretch is under construction, making it the largest road construction site in the state.

That’s why Colorado Department of Transportation officials are reminding the public of key safety protocols when traveling the corridor and highlighting what construction activity they can expect to see in the months to come.

“We are ramping up big time,”

spokeswoman Tamara Rollison said of the project.

The department expects traffic to increase by approximately 8% over the summer, a time when RVs and boats frequent the corridor combined with increased traffic to and from the annual Renaissance Festival in Larkspur, said spokesman Bob Wilson.

Two lanes will remain open in each direction during the day and peak hours, and a shoulder will be converted into a temporary lane during the Renaissance Festival to mitigate that traffic. Pull-off locations are available for emergencies.

Lane closures will occur at night when necessary. The Gap’s speed limit has

been lowered from 75 mph to 65 mph.

CDOT is urging drivers to slow down, leave ample room between them and the vehicle in front of them, and to never stop their vehicle on the interstate.

Expect narrower lanes and shoulders, Rollison said, and stay attentive. She named distracted driving as one of the leading causes of crashes in the area.

Drivers will notice lane shifts as well.

“Things in construction zones can change fast,” she said.

The $350 million project began in September 2018 near Castle Rock. Work is on track to wrap up in the fall of 2022, Rollison said. Crews are expanding the interstate by one express lane

in each direction, repairing and replacing bridges, constructing wildlife crossings and widening shoulders.

The goal is to increase safety and provide travelers a reliable trip. Prior to construction, the area averaged one crash a day and was notorious for bottlenecking traffic.

CDOT is using multiple channels to push information and updates on the project, including real-time alerts for drivers planning to travel the Gap. People can subscribe to text alerts by texting I25GAP to 21000, following CDOT on Twitter or Facebook, and going to the project website at i25gap. codot.gov.

When we suffer we learn to depend on God’s grace (2 Cor 12:9), to commit ourselves to God’s care (1 Pet 4:19), to persevere (Rom 5:3), to have sympathy for others who suffer (2 Cor 1:4) & to develop patience (James 1:3). We learn that Christ suffered in life as an example for us to follow (1 Pet 2:21). We learn that He suffered in death on the cross to make us righteous (1 Pet 3:18).

Grant awards bolster local safety-net programs Winners Guide

County commissioners award $200,000 from Philip S. Miller Trust STAFF REPORT

The Board of Douglas County Commissioners selected 28 nonprofit programs from 34 applications to share $200,000 in grant funds from the county’s 2019 portion of the Philip S. Miller Trust.

Together, these programs cast a wide safety net throughout the county by delivering programs and services such as suicide prevention, medical assistance, mental health, emergency assistance and support for seniors and school-age children, according to a news release.

“Recipients of this award have a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for vulnerable and at-risk members of our community and many provide services not available through other means,” County Commissioner

and Board Chairman Roger Partridge said in the release. “We are honored to continue the legacy of philanthropy established by Philip S. Tour de Cure raises money, awareness for diabetes Sept. 7 event designed for all levels of cyclists, runners and walkers STAFF REPORT

Runners, walkers and riders of all levels can help in the fight against diabetes in September by participating in the Tour de Cure, a fitness and community fundraising event presented by the American Diabetes Association.

Every 21 seconds, someone in the United States is diagnosed with diabetes, according to a news release. In addition, nearly half of American adults have either diabetes or prediabetes, which puts them at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, the release said. People with diabetes are at significant risk for serious complications including kidney failure, heart disease,

stroke, blindness and lower-limb amputations, the release said.

The American Diabetes Association’s premier fundraising event, this year’s Tour de Cure is Sept. 7 at Salisbury Park in Parker. The tour is designed for participants of all fitness levels, with 10-mile routes for the occasional cyclist to 100mile century rides for experienced cyclists, and a 5k run or walk.

Participants who have diabetes get VIP treatment. More than 30,680 participants and volunteers from across the country participate in tour events each year.

“Tour de Cure is more than just a ride, walk or run — it is a celebration of the ADA’s mission and a chance to raise critical funds to help fight diabetes,” Lindsay Phelan, the association’s associate director of development, said in the release.

Swift water is safety focus as snowpack melts Rescuers offer words of caution to Coloradans in search of recreation

Rachel Kohler loves rivers.

“Playing in rivers can be a ton of fun,” she said, “as long as you’re doing it with full knowledge of the risks — and you have a safety plan in place.”

For her profession, Kohler is an engineer with West Metro Fire Rescue.

But for recreation, she is a river fishing guide. Though experienced in river activities and knowledgeable about safety precautions, Kohler joined many other professional firefighters across the state this year in earning a swift water rescue certification.

“Each year, we have more and more people recreating in our rivers and lakes,” said Chris Dinges, a fire engineer with the Westminster Fire Department. “It’s imperative to keep our skills sharp so that we’re capable of responding when needed.”

Rescue crews are especially concerned with water safety this year because heavier-than-average snowfall last winter means more runoff is expected.

rivers, swift water can be any form of moving water. This includes lakes, reservoirs and flooded areas.

“Even slow-moving water can cause a fatality,” said Robert Baker, a firefighter with South Metro Fire Rescue who is an instructor for the department’s Dive Team, which includes swift water rescue.

Use a personal flotation device, also known as a life jacket or vest, anytime you’re going to be near the water, Baker said. Especially children, he added.

“They’re not going to like it at first,” Baker said, “but it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

People often don’t realize how cold Colorado’s natural bodies of water are, Steinhoff said. When a person is cold, movements can be slowed and immediate reactions delayed, making self-rescue even more difficult, he added.

“Shivering is the first sign of hypothermia,” Steinhoff said. “Make sure to get out of the water every once in a while, to let your body warm up. Wrap up in a dry towel or put dry clothes on.

The key is to dry off.”

Thermo-protection, also known as a wet suit, is recommended for anyone expecting to participate in water activities for a prolonged period of time, Steinhoff added.

Another hazard not often associated with swift water are floods, said Dave Dame, a firefighter with West Metro Fire Rescue and a swift water rescue instructor.

“A flash flood can cause a river to form anywhere, at any time,” Dame said.

Swift water rescue crews are also trained to handle flood situations, he said.

“Water is powerful and relentless, and not to mention freezing cold. All this was snow a couple of days ago,” Dame said. “I’m all for heading out to the river for a picnic. Just don’t get in the water unless you’re properly trained and have the appropriate equipment.”

Imagine, the Douglas County Board of Education denied the request of the DC Federation of Teachers — the union — to re-install collective bargaining.

Actually, it looks like we have elected some responsible adults to the board after all. The goals of the board make great sense, especially academic excellence and financial well being.

The board would not have financial well-being if the union could hold us all hostage to their salary demands through collective bargaining. So, please do not let their shock, tears and dumfounded expectations force you to complain to the reasonable, grown-up school board about their demands, especially after salaries have been raised, and new taxes have been

passed to pay for the raises. Let the citizens and community keep calling the shots, not the union.

Mary Ann McCoy Lone Tree An alternative Rather than providing bond money to charters, the Douglas County School District may want to use those funds to match the county’s offer and in turn provide additional resources to the charters for safety upgrades along with other schools. This may provide more dollars in the pot for school safety rather than working as separate entities on the issue. The charters already receive over $4 million from the state for capital needs that other schools do not receive. Maybe giving up a little to get more is an alternative.

In response to Ronald Nigh letter on June 6, I agree, let’s get an amendment to the Colorado Constitution that “a woman has the right to an abortion and a doctor has the freedom to perform it.” Let’s not stop there. Then we can move on to people over 70 who don’t have the means to support themselves.

Ending abortion would bring joy to many couples facing infertility and seeking children through adoption. Ending abortion would encourage women and men to consider carefully their choice to engage in sex without the protection of marriage or contraception.

Of course, you will now raise the issue of rape. Thank you, since you are a man... rape is a criminal act and men should be held accountable. You should help lead the way in getting this accomplished. The “how to get this done before the next election” part is called citizen referendum and initiative. Good luck!

Conversely, when things are tough and going bad, we could become susceptible to blaming others, events beyond our control, and conditions for our loss. We hate losing so much that our humbleness goes out the window and the finger-pointing begins.

The humble winner knows that we win together, and we lose together. The humble winner remembers the hard work and the journey not just the victory.

The humble winner leads their team during the setbacks and slumps and instills confidence as the team or company climbs back to the top. The humble winner makes sure that others who deserve credit are duly compensated and rewarded along the way.

Humbleness is like gratitude in a way.

The more we show gratitude for what we already have and who we have in our lives, typically we will have more to be grateful for. Well the more we weave a humble nature into our winning and leading, the more we will win, and we will build a loyal following of people who want to work with us or become a part of our team.

Exciting entertainment and outrageous events are awesome and fun. And

I’ve submitted to the Physical School Safety and Protection Funding Committee to help facilitate spending our county government’s $10 million surplus. The proposal consists of combining video, proximity sensors and airport type metal detectors (ugh).

No technical solution beats the effectiveness of conceal-carry permits for teachers, but there are a multitude of possible second-best technical solutions. In a nutshell, integrating cameras outside buildings for facial recognition (passive, not requiring gestures or any student interaction), metal detectors kept out of sight and only used randomly for selected students, and lastly unobtrusive proximity sensors synchronized with teacher badges detected at the entrance of every classroom, cafeteria and rest room that would provide real-time monitoring of teacher location when a “help-I’ve-fallen-and-I-can’t-get-up button” is pressed during an emergency.

My credentials are as a retired IBM software architect who has previously worked on the design of a facial recognition system for managing the movement of prisoners between cells and proximity sensors for monitoring the location of personnel on ski slopes.

These are but a few of the variety of applications.

Effectiveness must be the single most important objective achieved by ranking costs, intrusion, and ongoing support roles. First, any physical turnkey system is going to require some degree of hands-on oversight, call it operations, as you might envision managing a line of students going through a metal detector. Second, the intrusion of any technology must be heavily weighed on behalf of student body behavior where students are impressionable, and the impact of Orwellian influences must be minimized.

‘Opponents fear and respect her’ Audrey Weiss is taking her skills to Notre Dame

Arapahoe High School soccer player Audrey Weiss is one of those players who can never move around much without being marked by an opponent or two.

She always seemed to make things happen for the Warriors during her senior season and managed the team’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Grandview in the Class 5A state championship game in May. Weiss, who is headed to play at Notre Dame, is the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

“Audrey is incredibly talented,” said Arapahoe coach Mark Hampshire. “It has been clear that opponents fear and respect her.

“She recovered from ACL surgery her freshman year, came back in the state championship game her sophomore year and then back against in 2019. She has the ability to beat players one on one, serve and the whole package.

Katie Collins was hard to keep off the lacrosse field.

The Cherry Creek senior was a midfielder who was a standout on both offense and defense.

She was named the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year.

“She was our only two-way midfielder,” said Creek coach Bailey Zerr. “She is an incredible athlete and is super speedy. She will be a Division I college player at Oregon, which says a lot.”

Collins, who was the US Lacrosse Magazine’s Player of the Month for April for the west section after collecting 16 goals and three assists in the Bruins’ first four games, finished the season with 55 goals and six assists for 61 points.

College baseball opening doors for Colorado athletes

I

t’s been slow — like an off-speed changeup — for people to realize, but big-time college baseball is no longer a long shot for players who participate in Colorado high school baseball.

Arkansas sophomore catcher Casey Opitz, who played at Heritage High School in Littleton, made his second straight trip last weekend to Omaha, Nebraska for the 2019 College World Series.

“Absolutely, Colorado has college baseball players,” said Opitz.

“Talent comes from all over. You have OVERTIME to work hard for it.

They will find you, that’s their job.

“You have to put in the effort.

Depending on how you play, a big school will find you. If they don’t find you right away, Jim Benton you can go to a smaller school and they will find you there. No matter where you are from, they will find you.”

Casey Opitz’s older brother Jeff, manager of the Colorado Rockies’ Grand Junction Rookie League team who played for Nebraska as a freshman in the 2005 College World Series, agrees that Colorado does produce Division I baseball players.

“I’ve said that for years,” said Jeff Opitz. “There is a lot of good talent in Colorado, a lot of good homegrown talent. There are always some elite players.”

Casey Opitz was one of three former area high school players on rosters of College World Series teams.

Matthew Schmitz, a senior at Michigan who transferred from Cypress College, is a reserve first baseman who played in 14 games this season and hit .167 for the Wolverines. He is a former Regis Jesuit player who resides in Parker.

Tanner O’Tremba, a freshman who played at Cherry Creek, is a Texas Tech outfielder who played in 31 games prior to the World Series and hit .267 with 20 runs batted in.

He delivered a key double in an 8-6 Super Regional win over Oklahoma State on June 9 and had seven RBIs in an early-season game against Kentucky.

Casey Opitz, who played in 19 games as a freshman, is the Razorbacks’ No. 1 catcher this season and has been a solid leader for the pitching staff.

He caught a Southeast Conferenceleading 21 base runners attempting to steal.

He headed to Omaha with a .246 batting average after going 4-for-9 with five RBIs in three games against Ole Miss in the Super Regional.

A few of the adjustments from high school to college baseball included stronger, faster players and more games.

“You really have to be able to take care of yourself — it’s such a long season,” said Casey Opitz. “The first adjustment is how much baseball you play on a daily basis. I wouldn’t call it a job, it’s still fun.

“This year figuring out what works for me and what I need to work on was an improvement. It was easier on the catching part to come in and work with guys and figure out what I can do for them.

“It is unbelievable to be a part of some of the best teams in college

baseball at the College World Series.

It is great to have a bunch of family out here and it’s cool to come back here to see all them and play in front of them again.”

Time to celebrate Golden High School graduate Lindsay Horan scored in the 32nd minute and Mallory Pugh who played at Mountain Vista tallied in the 85th minute in the USA women’s soccer team’s record-breaking 13-0 World Cup win over Thailand on June 11.

However, most of the attention was centered on celebrations by the Americans after each goal in the rout, which has coach Jill Ellis defending her players.

I’m the first to admit I don’t like to see exaggerated celebrations after touchdowns, home runs, goals, winning 50-foot putts or whatever. Celebrate but don’t make it a jamboree.

However, the social media criticism directed at the American women is undeserved.

First of all, this was a World Cup match in the ultimate international tournament and goals should be celebrated. Plus, there is the goal differential, which is so important and a reason why teams can’t afford to let up on any opponent.

I have watched many tournaments

in the past few years where that one additional goal during the second match would have made a difference in advancing.

What should be noted are the actions by the Americans toward the disappointed Thai players after the match.

Thai coach Nuengruethai Sathongwien thanked the Americans who encouraged her overmatched players to keep fighting and keep their heads up.

Soccer Hall of Famer Whitney (Hollis) Longmeir, a Highlands Ranch resident and graduate of Columbine High School, was one of five members of the 1996-99 women’s soccer team who were inducted into the Santa Clara University Hall of Fame.

Longmeir, a midfielder who had 15 goals and 11 assists in the 87 career games in which she played, was a member of teams that went 89-9-4 and outscored their opponents 10898 in four seasons.

Collins scored in every game this season and had six in one game against Dakota Ridge. She ended her career with a 38-game scoring streak. The last game she didn’t get a goal came on May 24, 2017 in an 8-5 loss to Colorado Academy.

In three seasons on the Bruins’ varsity, Collins had 147 goals, 19 assists and 166 points and a .590 shooting percentage.

Fuel up right: Eat a healthy and balanced diet that is lower in fat and higher in vegetables and fruit to help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Although research on diet and cognitive function is limited, certain diets may contribute to risk reduction.

Catch some ZZZs: Not getting enough sleep due to conditions like insomnia or sleep apnea may result in problems with memory and thinking.

Take care of your mental health: Some studies link a history of depression with increased risk of cognitive decline, so seek medical treatment if you have symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mental health concerns. Also, try to manage stress.

Stump yourself: Challenge and activate your mind. Build a piece of furniture. Complete a jigsaw puzzle. Do something artistic.

Play games, such as bridge, that make you think strategically. Challenging your mind may have short- and longterm benefits for your brain.

Buddy up: Staying socially engaged may support brain health. Pursue social activities that are meaningful. Find ways to be part of your community. If you love animals, consider volunteering at a local shelter. If you enjoy singing, join a local choir. Or share activities with friends and family.

According to the release, these habits will help achieve maximum benefits for the brain and body: Break a sweat: Engage in regular cardiovascular exercise that elevates your heart rate and increases blood flow to the brain and body. Several studies have found an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline.

Hit the books: Formal education in any stage of life will help reduce your risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

Butt out: Evidence shows that smoking increases risk of cognitive decline. Quitting smoking can reduce that risk to levels comparable to those who have not smoked.

Follow your heart: Evidence shows that risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke — obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes — negatively impact your cognitive health.

Heads up: Brain injury can raise risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Wear a seat belt, use a helmet when playing contact sports or riding a bike, and take steps to prevent falls.

Fire muster fans check out old, new gear

ide-eyed youngsters thronged Arapahoe Community College in Littleton on June 15, enthusiastically exploring dozens of vintage and active-duty fire trucks and emergency vehicles at the annual Fire Muster.

Organized by the Mile High Hook and Ladder vintage fire truck club and sponsored by Schomp Automotive, the annual event began with a fire truck parade down Main Street, and wound up at ACC, where kids took fire truck rides, danced in the spray of fire hoses and cranked the sirens on oldtime trucks.

South Metro Fire Rescue — which now provides service to Littleton, as well as Centennial, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and other nearby areas — brought numerous vehicles, including massive ladder trucks.

The event is one of the high points of the year for firefighters and their fans alike, said South Metro Fire Chief Bob Baker.

“Littleton is the best little town ever, and we just have so much fun getting out here with kids and showing them what we do,” Baker said. “Who knows?

Maybe some of these kids will get the bug and want to grow up to be firefighters.”
