Three weeks after the May 7 STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting, Douglas County rolled out a plan it says could provide 49 more school resource officers to local campuses in the next three years, bringing the total from 12 to 61.

The county has pledged $3 million a year to support the SROs, but the money is contingent on a 50% match from schools in the county.

Whether it receives the match remains to be seen, but the proposal has spurred conversation about the number of SROs needed in a county with 68,000 students in public schools and an estimated Nicholson3,000 in private schools.

Rocky Vista celebrates graduates 151 medical students, 23 master’s students receive degrees STAFF REPORT

Rocky Vista University celebrated the graduation of 151 medical students from the college of osteopathic medicine and 23 students from the master of science in biomedical sciences program.

The May 18 ceremony was at Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver.

Following the posting of the colors, Garrett Smith, OMS II, performed the National Anthem.

Rocky Vista President and CEO Clinton E. Adams, DO, FACHE, welcomed the audience and congratulated the graduates on the completion of their respective programs: “Each of you should enjoy the overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment as you now look to the next chapter of your professional development — residency training. According to a news release, Rocky Vista has continued its trend of having 100 percent of its medical students place into their chosen residency programs. Approximately 24 percent of the Class of 2019 will go on to practice family medicine, 15 percent will practice internal medicine, and the remainder will go into various

specialties.

During the commencement, the university commissioned 19 graduates from the military medicine track, one of Rocky Vista’s specialty programs.

The commissioning ceremony, which recognizes the ranking of the officers, was conducted by Major General Ronald J. Place, MD, acting assistant director of the health care administration and director of the National Capital Region Medical Directorate and Transitional Intermediate Management Organization within the Defense Health Agency.

Teacher who drew attention for social media comments resigns Michelle Grissom had been on paid leave since January

A Douglas County middle school teacher who was put on paid leave earlier this year after garnering national attention for comments posted on social media has reached an agreement with the school district.

Michelle Grissom, a seventh-grade social studies teacher at Mountain Ridge Middle School in Highlands Ranch, has resigned effective May 1 and will receive $25,000, the school district confirmed, in addition to 14 weeks of paid time off.

Grissom was put on paid leave Jan. 23 after her Jan. 20 tweet claimed a Kentucky teenager participated in a controversial rally in Washington, D.C. The post referred to the student as training to be part of the “Hitler Youth.”

The student Grissom mentioned by name, however, was not actually at the rally.

The nature of Grissom’s comments drew anger from many parents and community members.

At a Feb. 5 school board meeting, Douglas County Superintendent Thomas Tucker

formally recommended Grissom’s termination. Under Colorado law, Grissom was allowed to request a hearing on the basis of her termination before a hearing officer, who would make a recommendation to the school board, according to a statement from Tucker at the time. The dismissal process would be ongoing and the school district would not provide further comment, Tucker said.

The school district has reached an agreement with Grissom, in which Grissom will not seek future employment with DCSD and has released any current or future claims she may have against the school district, a statement from Tucker says.

In return, the district agreed to withdraw its dismissal proceedings and pay Grissom the $25,000, approximately what she would otherwise have been entitled to under Colorado law, and a small portion of the cost of the hearing while the dismissal proceedings continued, according to Tucker’s statement.

“We believe the agreement is in the best interest of the Douglas County School District as it addresses our community’s concerns regarding Ms. Grissom’s continued employment, avoids the distraction of the ongoing dismissal litigation, and ends the continued expense and uncertainty involved in the teacher dismissal process,” Tucker said in the statement.

School board seeks ‘collective vision’ on school safety No decision has been made on whether DCSD will accept county’s funding offer

The Douglas County School District Board of Education has not made a decision on whether it will accept millions of dollars in financial assistance from the board of county commissioners, according to the school board president.

School board members have concerns about stipulations of the proposal, which would put control of the funds in the hands of two committees with little DCSD representation and require an annual match from the district for a portion of the funds.

In a letter to the board of commissioners, the school board asked that the two entities unite “in building upon a collective vision of a comprehensive framework for school safety.”

At a May 28 meeting, commissioners voted to allocate $13.3 million toward school safety initiatives. The plan outlined an ongoing $3 million to fund 61 schools resource officers in the county by the 2021-22 school year, contingent on a 50% annual match from schools in the county, along with the formation of two committees that would dictate spending of a $10 million one-time gift. County commissioners say possible ways to spend the money included entryway security and mental health programming.

The approval of the funds came exactly three weeks after a shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch left one student dead and eight others injured.

In a May 29 email response to an inquiry from Colorado Community Media, school board President David Ray said the board has not met to discuss the commissioners’ actions, nor discussed whether to accept or reject any funds.

Ray Ray later added by email that the district had “yet to receive an ‘official offer’ from the commissioners” and the matter was not on the June 4 school board meeting agenda.

Superintendent Thomas Tucker was not available for comment, nor was Rich Payne, the school district’s director of safety and security.

A strongly worded news release issued by the school district May 28, attributed to the board of education, seems to indicate the board would not accept the funds unless changes to the plan are made.

“With respect, the Commissioners were not elected to make decisions for our students, staff and schools in DCSD. We would be grateful for monetary support, as well as support of any

Roger Partridge, chairman of the board of commissioners, said he believes it is important for commissioners to retain control of how the $13.3 million is spent.

“I don’t believe those who elected us said we want you to hand over Partridge your authority,” Partridge said during the May 28 meeting.

Under the commissioners’ plan, a Physical School Safety and Protection Funding Committee would have nine members — five appointed by the county, two recommended by the school board and two by Douglas County law enforcement.

A Supportive Mental Health for Students Funding Committee would also have nine members — two representing the school district, one representing a charter or private school in the county, three representing the community and three appointed by the county.

The two committees would be charged with making recommendations on how to spend the one-time gift of $10 million.

Commissioners said they intend to have the committees formed as soon as possible and expect a report back by July 3, with the possibility of extending the deadline to July 15.

They planned to send a formal letter to the school district requesting recommendations for the committees — who must be appointed by the board of commissioners — the week of May 27.

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners recently rolled out a plan intended to enhance school security.

The $13.3 million plan, approved by commissioners May 28, is multi-pronged and includes both one-time and ongoing dollars.

Here’s a breakdown of the plan: • It puts $10 million in one-time spending toward physical security and mental health programming in schools. The board on May 28 established two, nine-member committees that will recommend how to spend the $10 million. They are expected to return with recommendations in July.

Commissioners’ first task following their May 28 decision was appointing people to the committees. The mental health committee will comprise two school district representatives, one charter or private school representative, three members appointed by the county and three recommended by the county’s Mental Health Initiative.

The physical safety committee will comprise five members appointed by the board of commissioners, two recommended by the school board and two recommended by law enforcement.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY COME FROM? In early May, Douglas County announced it had located an available $10 million within its budget and intended to put it toward heightening school safety. By late May, that number was upped to $13.3 million and approved by commissioners in a unanimous vote on May 28 for school safety initiatives.

such committees, pointing to the school district’s existing Safety and Security Committee, comprising building leaders, district administration, security personnel, mental health professionals and representatives from local law enforcement agencies and fire departments.

In the letter to county commissioners, the school board said its current security and mental health personnel are well-informed experts who continually research and respond to safety issues on a daily basis. It would not be possible for an advisory committee to have the same understanding in three weeks, the letter says.

The commissioners’ plan to fund an ongoing $3.3 million for school resource officers, contingent on an annual 50% match from schools, has also spurred disagreement due to the inclusion of private schools, which account for roughly 10 percent of the county’s students.

“Channeling PUBLIC tax revenue to private entities will lead to loss of trust that tax revenue

is being spent as intended,” the school board’s letter to county commissioners says. “Adding private schools to your proposal complicates the process given that elected officials do not govern these schools. Nor are there public accountability measures for these schools.”

While the future of school safety in Douglas County is unclear, board members and district staff continue to thank voters for passing last November a $40 million mill levy override that is helping fund 80 counselors and a $250 million bond, of which $15 million is allocated for security at charter and neighborhood schools.

To keep “all our students safe,” the school board asked this of county commissioners in its letter: “Our simple request is to work WITH us as opposed to forging a separate path that may not be effective nor beneficial.”

It is critical to distribute resources that will promote equity, as opposed to whether a school has matching financial resources.”

The district’s proposed budget for the 201920 school year will be presented to the board of education for approval at a board meeting beginning at 5 p.m. on June 18 at the district’s administration building, 620 Wilcox St., Castle Rock.

Board members have also expressed concerns about the terms of the commissioners’ proposal, which would provide SROs to not only traditional public schools and charter schools but also to private schools.

“I personally have great pause that you are including private schools in this conversation because this is public money, and we know we don’t give public money to private entities because we have no control over those,” school board member Anne-Marie Lemieux said at a May 23 study session with the board of commissioners.

County Commissioner Abe Laydon said the board consulted with county legal staff before including private schools in their proposal and concluded it was within their purview.

Commissioners said they remain optimistic.

They have yet to discuss what will happen if the school district declines their financial offer.

If the district does decline the money, Laydon expects members of the public “will have a lot to say about that.”

Sheriff’s office ended SRO deal with STEM STAFF REPORT

STEM School Highlands Ranch did not have a school resource officer this past academic year. Instead, the K-12 charter school contracted with a private security firm, and a guard was on campus during the May 7 shooting.

The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office opted not to renew its contract with STEM after the 2017-18 school year. During that final year of the contract, tension mounted between STEM and the sheriff ’s office, documents show.

Sheriff ’s office officials said they did not like that STEM was using the SRO largely to direct traffic.

The resource officer became ill toward the end of the school year, and STEM’s executive director, Penny Eucker, requested a credit for the months not served, according to emails released by the sheriff ’s office. But according to a report from Lt. Lori Bronner, who oversees Douglas County School District’s resource officers, the sheriff ’s office continued to provide services to the school through its SRO and Youth Education and Safety -in Schools departments while the assigned SRO was on leave. Ultimately, the sheriff ’s office issued a refund to STEM of $6,731.50 for the four months the assigned SRO was absent.

During the 2017-18 school year, STEM and SkyView Academy, another Highlands Ranch charter school, split the services of the resource officer. Each school paid -$26,925, the contract shows. h

Resource officers investigate threats, thwart planned violence before it occurs and build relationships between students and law enforcement, NicholsonKluth said. They are mentors, parent figures, coaches and resources for teachers, administrators and parents. The officers also watch out for mental health issues among students and connect them with help if needed.

“We believe that putting officers in schools acts as a prevention of violence,” Nicholson-Kluth said. “We feel that an SRO is not just an armed guard waiting for some type of attack.”

Mo Canady, executive director of the National Association of School Resource Officers, said the previous school of thought was to place one SRO for every 1,000 students, but the organization now recommends schools take individual factors into consideration. That could include a building’s location, campus size and culture.

Most of Douglas County’s nine traditional high schools have at least 1,500 students, some more than 2,000. There is an SRO assigned to each of those high schools, but the resource officer also oversees

THE COST OF BRINGING IN AN ADDITIONAL SRO

In discussing bringing more school resource officers to Douglas County schools, county commissioners reviewed several funding scenarios in an effort to understand the cost of SROs. Martha Marshall, the county’s budget director, said in one example they determined the startup and ongoing costs when combined totaled $192,237 for a mid-level deputy position.

Within that figure, ongoing costs, like salary, benefits and training, were estimated to be approximately $120,605. One-time, startup costs for a new position were calculated at approximately $71,632. That would include expenses like uniforms, vehicles, radios and other equipment.

Those numbers can fluctuate, depending on factors like the rank of an officer or cost of equipment, officials say. the high school’s feeder middle school.

Nicholson-Kluth said the sheriff ’s office would like to reach a ratio of at least one SRO per 1,000 students. Following the May 28 meeting, she wouldn’t comment on the commissioners’ proposal of 61 SROs. But she did say the sheriff ’s office hopes to see at least 11 to 16 more SROs in the next year.

board of commissioners’ meeting and hope to fill most by the 2019-20 school year. That would allow every high school and middle school its own SRO. If the county does fulfill its vision of 61 SROs, NicholsonKluth said that could enable the sheriff ’s office to begin a broader sharing program that places SROs at the elementary school level.

She also hopes other law enforcement agencies in the county would help provide some of the additional officers.

At present, the Castle Rock Police Department provides two SROs and the Parker Police Department one. Each are considering adding more.

Roger Partridge, chairman of the board of county commissioners, said the county’s finance director determined funds were available for 61 SROs. Commissioners also kept in mind the number of schools — 91 — in the Douglas County School District.

“Our focus was to get as close to that number in terms of SRO coverage as possible,” Commissioner Abe Laydon said.

Commissioner Lora Thomas, a former member of the Colorado State Patrol, said the board is also open to ideas other than SROs, which can be costly.

“Having hired law enforcement people in the past,” Thomas said, “I know how hard it is and how expensive it is.”

Parker, Castle Rock police consider additional SROs

The Parker and Castle Rock police departments are considering adding more school resource officers to some local schools but have yet to make a decision.

Presently, the Parker department provides two SROs — one who covers Legend High School and Cimarron Middle School, and the other at Sierra Middle School. Members of the public have asked the police department to provide numerous additional SROs, including at some elementary schools, said Josh Hans, the police department’s communications director. Some have asked for Legend High, which has an enrollment of nearly 2,200 students, to have two SROs. “The desire seems to outweigh the means to do so… It would wipe out our patrol staff to meet this new demand and it would be a very large financial commitment to put more school resource officers in schools,” Hans said. “We’re in discussion with the school district as far as funding with that. It is being discussed for the future, but we can’t say any have or haven’t been

approved at this point.”

A spokesman said the Castle Rock Police Department provides two full-time SROs to schools in town.

One is assigned to Castle View High School and the other splits time between Mesa Middle School and Castle Rock Middle School.

The spokesman said Castle Rock’s department is in the early stages of considering more SROs and will know more about those plans this summer.

Adding SROs would cost a police department more than just the roughly $60,000 it takes to fund half an officer’s salary and benefits — the school district funds the other half — according to Hans. With more SROs in place, the Parker department would need, for example, more sergeants, supervisors and dispatchers.

“The STEM shooting here really seems to have jump-started the conversation on security in schools,” Hans said. “A large portion of one of the tax increases (last November) went to school safety, and they have a considerable amount of money put away in school safety. But because of STEM there’s been a huge surge like we’ve never seen before.”

As recently as late April, his committee was advocating for voters to extend 0.13% of the county’s 1% sales tax expected to sunset in 2020. The money is currently dedicated to capital projects related to public safety.

The hope was to convert the 0.13% to a school safety fund before it sunsets and extend it into perpetuity. Then, distribute the funds among law enforcement agencies to pay 100% of the cost for SROs. Since the late 1980s, schools and law enforcement agencies have split the cost of SROs in Douglas County roughly 50/50.

The committee’s focus has shifted slightly.

Following a May 7 shooting at STEM High School Highlands Ranch, county commissioners pledged $3 million toward funding dozens more SROs in the county. But the money is contingent on a 50% match from schools. The Douglas County School District’s board of education has said its budget for next year is set and a match can’t be easily found, if at all.

Nelson said his committee’s former proposal to put the

0.13% toward school safety remains an idea but the group’s focus is now on encouraging the school district to provide the $3 million match, which he believes DCSD can do.

“It’s about will and determination,” he said.

Douglas County Commissioner Abe Laydon said the board was encouraged to see Nelson’s committee support their plan.

“At this point, we’re very optimistic that the leaders in the community are going to come to the table to do the right thing by our citizens,” he said.

Not everyone at the GOP meeting was supportive of the committee’s proposal or commissioner’s offer of $3 million.

Franceen Thompson’s daughter was a senior at STEM during the May 7 tragedy and a friend to Kendrick Castillo, who was killed.

In regard to school security, she thinks all solutions should be on the table. Metal detectors, arming teachers if they are willing to carry, door alarms, improving school culture and funding SROs, to name some.

But Thompson said she doesn’t think county tax dollars should be put toward schools. The school district is its own taxing authority and county taxes would be better used on roads or mental health services for the entire community, she said.

Nine years for driver who hit, killed motorcyclist near Sedalia Ronald Hargrove, 49, was sentenced for killing Suzanne Weston, 69, of Parker

A Parker man was sentenced to nine years in prison for hitting and killing a motorcyclist in Sedalia in 2017.

Ronald Hargrove, 49, was sentenced May 28 for the Class 3 felony — leaving the scene of an accident involving death — in which Suzanne Weston, 69, also of Parker, was killed, according to a news release from the 18th Judicial District.

“You chose to take Hargrove the risk of getting behind the wheel,” Judge David Stevens told Hargrove during sentencing. “Everyone who was on the roadway that day was put at risk — the numbers caught up with you.”

Hargrove was driving with a revoked license and no sleep, according to the release. Hargrove had two previous DUI convictions but “violated out” of substance abuse programs. Hargrove also had low levels of alcohol, THC and prescription medications in his system, according to the release.

“Yet another driver who somehow

feels that driving is a right, and not a privilege,” District Attorney George Brauchler said in the news release. “This man shouldn’t have been behind the wheel — let alone after consuming alcohol, marijuana and prescription drugs. But he made an irresponsible, selfish decision, and he cut short the life of Suzanne Weston.”

According to the news release: On Oct. 12, 2017, Weston was riding her motorcycle single file with three other motorcyclists on northbound U.S. 85 in Douglas County. The riders moved into the left-turn only lane and slowed to wait for a green light to run onto Colorado 67 toward Sedalia. Weston was last in line.

A 2010 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Hargrove was northbound on U.S. 85.

The truck went from the right lane into the left turn lane and cut off other witnesses in a separate vehicle on scene. The truck hit Weston and continued off the right side of the southbound lanes, through a ditch, onto the frontage road. Hargrove got out of his truck, walked over to Weston lying in the road, then got back in the truck and continued driving on the frontage road, eventually heading southbound on 85.

Witnesses got the license plate number. Hargrove was pulled over and arrested by a Douglas County deputy a short time later. Hargrove admitted to fleeing the scene of the crash because there were warrants for his arrest. His driving privileges in Colorado were suspended at the time.

Case against woman charged in fatal crash moves forward Deanna Bixby, 20, charged with vehicular homicide in Feb. 6 wreck

Family and friends of a young couple killed in a February car crash following a police chase packed a Castle Rock courtroom during a hearing for the accused killer.

Deanna Bixby, 20, faces several charges in the Feb. 6 crash in Littleton that killed Ryan Carter, 27, and Jayne Davicsin, 25, including vehicular Bixby homicide, vehicular eluding resulting in death, possession of a weapon by a felon and trespassing with intent to commit a crime.

A judge ruled at the May 31 preliminary hearing that sufficient evidence

exists to move the case forward to trial. Bixby’s arraignment, at which she will plead guilty or not guilty, is scheduled for July 8.

The hearing was taxing for Rod Carter, Ryan’s father, though he was heartened by the outpouring of support from those who knew Ryan.

“Ryan didn’t have an enemy in the world,” Carter said outside the hearing. “He was such a good friend to so many people, and it shows in this room. I didn’t ask anyone to come.

A Douglas County deputy patrolling a Castle Pines neighborhood encountered Bixby, driving a stolen Mitsubishi Lancer, and 24-year-old Mario Jose, driving a stolen Jeep, in the early hours of Feb. 6, testified Douglas County detective Michael Trindle, the lead investigator in the case. When the deputy attempted to pull the Jeep over, both vehicles took off going north on Highway 85 near Daniels Park Road.

Bixby evaded several police roadblocks by driving north in southbound traffic lanes, and was going more than 100 mph when she collided with a white Subaru at Mineral Avenue and Santa Fe Drive, instantly killing Davicsin and Carter, Trindle testified.

Bixby was hospitalized for injuries sustained in the crash, and is being held in the Douglas County jail on a $1 million dollar bond.

The Jeep was later recovered abandoned in a residential neighborhood.

Jose was arrested days later in Denver and faces four felony counts: aggravated motor vehicle theft, vehicular eluding, trespassing and violating bail bond conditions.

in the Mitsubishi Bixby was driving, which had been stolen two days earlier in Aurora. Bixby had methamphetamine in her blood at the time of the crash, Trindle testified.

Bixby’s older sister Jane Bixby made headlines in Littleton in 2017 when she hit a Littleton police officer with a stolen car. Both Bixby sisters were later apprehended, along with several other people, as part of a smash-and-grab robbery of a cell phone store in August 2017. Both sisters pleaded guilty to charges related to the robbery.

Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock defended his department’s chase policy in the days after the crash, which allows deputies to pursue vehicles they believe are stolen or are driving erratically. Douglas County deputies also faced questions for not notifying Littleton Police that the chase was approaching Littleton until almost the moment of the crash.

Local Scouts help church improve grounds STAFF REPORT

Scouts from Troop 16 broke up hardened soil, spread new topsoil, dispersed and raked seed, and covered the seed with more topsoil as part of revegetation work at Parker United Methodist Church.

The work completed May 18 along the walkway on the church’s property next to Parker Road was required to meet Parker vegetation coverage standards. The Scouts saved the church substantial labor expenses as estimates to have the work done professionally ranged from $2,500 to $8,000, according to a news release.

The money the Scouts freed up by doing the work can now be used to help make a difference in lives locally and globally, the release said. Church staff said the money could go to: • Feed My Starving Children, which provides money to purchase 9,090 meals to the world’s most vulnerable children.

• Winter Shelter Network, to purchase equipment to provide temporary shelter to church guests (cots,

supplies, food).

• Haiti, provide money for school uniforms, transportation funds for medical care for long-term mission workers needing U.S.-based temporary care or partially fund a small safe home for a family (total cost of about $6,000).

• Parker Task Force, provide food/ groceries and support for utility costs, housing costs to provide temporary relief for those undergoing a financial crisis.

• Wycliffe Bible Translators, provide transportation support for missionaries to learn local languages and translate scripture.

Parker Core Knowledge celebrates 25 years STAFF REPORT

Parker Core Knowledge celebrated its 25th anniversary on May 24 with a time capsule and photo with the students forming the number 25 from a bird’s eye view.

The charter school opened on Sept. 6, 1994 and is a K-8 school.

At the time, 164 students and nine teachers made up the school. Now, the schools has more than 700 students, according to its website ckcs.net, and 28 classroom teachers.

Weekday access to Waterton Canyon will be closed through Friday, June 14, for Denver Water’s annual dust mitigation project. Neither the parking lot at the canyon’s entrance nor the canyon will be accessible.

Waterton Canyon is planned to be open on Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, for weekend recreation.

But seriously. While I was waiting for my prescripQUIET tion to be filled by DESPERATION the pharmacist, I waited in a small area that was shelf after shelf of remedies, ointments, potions, lotions, candles, salts and emollients.

One display had a palette of what are called “essential Craig Marshall oils.”

tial” intrigued me, because it means “absolutely necessary,” and I realized at that moment I might have been neglecting my essentials.

Harry and Jennifer are my primary essentials. After that come music, painting and black-and-white films, like “The 39 Steps.”

My car considers oil an essential.

Likewise, my lawn mower. But me? No. Oh, well, there’s olive oil, and peanut and sunflower, and I appreciate them, but I could live without them.

When I got home, I looked up “essential oils” and saw the word “aromatherapy,” and held on to the armrests of my chair.

That word scares me.

One site (aromatherapyassociates.

com) says, “Find a moment to yourself to create the perfect therapeutic ambiance with a bath and shower oil and enjoy a moment of mindfulness to find balance. Experience the full ritual with other aromatherapy products such as candles or pure essential oils on a burner to create perfect surroundings.”

Then it adds, “We use cookies to make your experience better.”

Here’s a thought: Forget all that other claptrap, and just bake some cookies, and you will have all the therapy you need.

Modern life is saturated with alternatives to simply relying on given instincts and abilities to subsist. I know.

I have tried: alcohol, caffeine and pie.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Defend women’s rights I am a man and I believe everyone has a right to live their life as long as it does not interfere with another person’s life.

So, if a woman wants an abortion, it is not someone else’s decision to make for her. It is hers and hers alone.

So let’s stop things here and now in Colorado and create a simple amendment to the Colorado Constitution that “a woman has the right to an abortion and a doctor has the freedom to perform it.”

Whoever knows how to get this amendment going before the next election, please step up to the plate and take charge.

Even if I’m only partially right, this zealous school board should take some blame for the STEM School shooting. The board formulated and sold the 5B bond for $250 million, with only a pittance for charter schools safety, 1.2% to 3.6% to be exact, with 20% of our public school students attending charters!

Isn’t it a coincidence that the sheriff only canceled a contract with a charter school?

I’m not saying the school board played an active role, but they engineered much less for charter school safety. The tiny allocation to charters was bound in a box by the oversight of the (controlling) school board. Who’s to know the difference an equal allocation would have made and whether 18-year-old senior Kendrick Ray Castillo would be alive today if it weren’t for the school board discriminating against charter schools?

The school board is intoxicated with its power and despises the county’s gift as illustrated by their call to arms against sharing the county’s gift with private schools, as though private school lives matter less.

It’s all about agenda — you had to be at the meeting to appreciate the contempt.

When I read about a town that was wiped out by a tornado, and see a couple crying next to their chimney and nothing else, I wonder how they’re going to make it without their “essentials.”

The starts and stops of life deserve attention

lthough the summer doesn’t officially begin until June 20, we often talk about Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial start of the summer.

Parties, barbeques, picnics, and all sorts of outdoor activity quickly move us from thinking about winter WINNING and spring and WORDS launch us right into summertime.

Unofficial starts are good, any “start” is good.

Even companies launching a new product, or a startup company may do something called a “soft launch” prior Michael Norton to bringing their products and services to the market.

Again, any kind of “start” or “soft launch” is good, it gets us started, gets us going, energizes everyone involved.

Here we are celebrating the unofficial start of summer, in October and November, depending on snowfall, we get excited over the unofficial start to winter as the first lifts open and we get back on the hill.

It’s fun, its energizing, the “starts” in life motivate us and inspire us as we look forward with great anticipation to what is coming next.

What about the unofficial stops in life? The soft stops? Those pauses where we say or believe that we just need to take a short break from our goals or projects?

In most cases we know what happens don’t we? Those unofficial stops and soft stops turn in to official stops and hard stops.

We never intend for this to happen, we just seem to run out of gas, or our interest fades, or we move on to the next new thing in our path or life.

Where unofficial starts and soft launches are both really good, we have to be aware and careful of those unofficial stops and soft stops. We start a new workout and commit ourselves to the program.

We are doing a really good job, getting there on the days we committed to being there, we are feeling really good, and then all of a sudden we think we should take a day off, then a second day, and then a third and before we know it, our soft stop or temporary break from the gym becomes a hard stop and we are done.

Music makes for a healthier brain and life

any of us have spoken about the benefits of music with common sayings such as “Music is the universal language” or “Music soothes the soul.” Anyone who enjoys listening to music can testify that music can make you feel good!

As we age, engaging LIVING AND in musical activities can also help keep our AGING WELL brains as healthy as possible. Music neuroscientists have been studying the effect of music on the brain for decades and their work has helped us to learn exactly how and why music can help.

Let’s investigate a few Sarah Thompson of the ways that we can see music working in our lives.

Music and memory: Music is a very robust stimulus for our brains! Individuals in the late stages of Alzheimer’s or dementia often forget the names of their loved ones, yet they typically still remember music that they like. In these situations, music that is specifi-

cally chosen for that individual can give loved ones a way to have a meaningful connection when their loved one has limited ability to interact. We can often see people who don’t usually speak or remember things from their past suddenly singing along to favorite songs from long ago. Neuroscience research has helped us to understand that this is possible because areas of the brain that process musical memory may be some of the last areas of the brain to degenerate during the disease process.

Music and movement: Some of us may hear an upbeat song and naturally start tapping our toes. Music, or more specifically, rhythm is processed in the areas of our brain that are also responsible for motor movement. So, rhythm can naturally make us want to move! Research shows that people often exercise longer and put in more effort when they exercise with music.

Exercise is an important activity for healthy aging and adding some music can maximize the physical benefits you get from exercise while making it feel like less effort.

We know that we want to write a book, create music, or start a business. We have an unofficial start as we brainstorm ideas, get energized, and just become completely consumed with our passion and our ideas.

It’s awesome because we started, we took the first steps, our adrenaline is pumping and we can’t wait to keep going.

And this is when we really have to keep our guard up, because here is where negative thinking or negative people will talk us out of fulfilling our dream.

And if we allow this to happen, our energy and passion train gets slows down, and our soft stop eventually becomes a hard stop leaving our dreams unfulfilled.

or adventurers, Colorado offers fourteeners, national forests and famous sand dunes, but if you live in the Denver metro area and aren’t fond of hours-long drives, the state is still home to many places where you can escape city life.

“It depends on what you’re looking for,” said Lauren Truitt, Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman, about state parks. “With Cherry Creek, you forget there’s city all around you. Roxborough has that stunning, vista-style view that looks over Denver and south to Castle Rock.”

And Barr Lake, up north near Brighton, is still less than an hour away from much of the rest of the metro area — out on the eastern plains but still boasting a “phenomenal view of the whole northern mountain range,” Truitt said.

More getaways sit in your backyard. Here’s a look at nearby state, federal and local stops and the kinds of eclectic activities they offer.

Cherry Creek State Park The massive park located between Aurora, Denver and the Centennial area isn’t just about its reservoir.

The park also allows camping, a shooting range and even rides on horses that parkgoers can rent, Truitt said. Enthusiasts can also fly model airplanes there, and, of course, the reservoir is open for fishing, she added.

Cherry Creek State Park is located along Interstate 225 and along South Parker Road.

Chatfield State Park South of Littleton along C-470 and South Santa Fe Drive, Chatfield also offers fishing, model-airplane flying and camping.

Horses are available for rent, and riding lessons and hayrides are also part of the fun, Truitt said.

Barr Lake State Park Northeast near Interstate 76 and E-470 sits Barr Lake State Park, where you can try your hand at archery.

“Barr Lake is fantastic for bird watching,” Truitt said. “They have a concessionaire that can rent canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.

TIPS FOR PARENTS AND KIDS The basics of enjoying Colorado’s parks include bringing sunscreen, layers, water, snacks and good closed-toe shoes.

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen kiddos wearing flip-flips on hikes,” said Lauren Truitt, Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman.

But make sure they’re still comfortable, Truitt said, especially for small kids.

“As long as they’re comfy, they’re usually happy to keep going.”

It’s important not to take young kids on outings that are too grueling, Truitt said.

“Take your time, have fun and enjoy the time,” Truitt said.

Many items from Generation Wild’s List of 100 Things to Do outside could be knocked out at parks in the metro area, according to Great Outdoors Colorado, a state organization that created the program.

Roxborough guest is kind of a big deal Big Foot hopes to make impression about leaving no trace

Word has it that Big Foot will walk about in Roxborough State Park on June 8 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) on a mission to remind visitors to “Leave No Trace” at this gorgeous nearby spot in Douglas County.

Volunteers Mike Thomas of Centennial and Sally Anderson, interpretive services manager Angel Tobin and others have joined forces to share the principles of the Leave No Trace movement, which started as an effort to convince backcountry users to leave a place as clean as they found it. The emphasis has moved to all open space, everywhere (aka “Front Country”).

Thomas, an optimistic and positive man, next hopes to spread the idea to other state parks and eventually to all parks — everywhere … (The legendary Big Foot leaves only footprints in the landscape.) Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics is a nationally recognized organization established in Boulder.

Volunteers hope the program will minimize the negative impacts on Roxborough’s unique geology, with rock formations that include up-

Roxborough is a designated Colorado Natural Area and National Natural Landmark, with its 300 million-year-old red sandstone Fountain Formations that tilt at a 60-degree angle.

Thomas recommends that if all possible, readers plan their visits during the week, since weekends become quite crowded.

Theater lights began to dim on May 17. First, Town Hall Arts Center’s board president Denise Kato introduced new THAC executive director Sharan Wilson to an enthusiastic firstnight crowd and introduced the production staff and show director — a nice way to start the evening — these essential ingredients in every production are not adequately recognized in general.

Then it was time for the opening performance of the musical “Sister n Act,” with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater and book by Cheri Steinkeller and Bill Steinkeller — with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane. The musical is based on the 1992 movie that starred Whoopi Goldberg in the Deloris part.

“Sister Act” runs through June 16 at Town Hall Arts Center in downtown Littleton.

Music kicked in promptly — in gangster Curtis’ nightclub, with “Take Me to Heaven.” Action also kicked in with a murder, witnessed by a group

What location could be safer than a quiet, disciplined convent?

We soon arrive at Queen of Angels Cathedral in San Francisco, where stern Mother Superior (Maggie Lamb) is very much in charge of the convent and immediately clashes with brassy Deloris, who will henceforth be Sister Mary Clarence, named for the patron saint of prisoners … Deloris is a product of Catholic schools, but does not have happy memories of “those nasty old nuns.” And she’s accustomed to doing things her way, rather than taking orders.

On the other hand, “It’s Good to Be a Nun,” sings Sister Mary Martin-ofTours (Suzanne Nepi of Highlands Ranch, in her first Town Hall appearance), as the sisters gather to welcome the sassy singer.

Mother Superior tells her to pretty much stay in her room, except for meals. Lamb sings “Within These Walls” and tries to maintain order within the order.

Fighting ‘zombie cells’ may help slow aging Research remains to be done, but scientists cite promising signs

Call them zombie cells — they refuse to die.

As they build up in your body, studies suggest, they promote aging and the conditions that come with it like osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers are studying drugs that can kill zombie cells and possibly treat the problems they bring.

Basically the goal is to fight aging itself, which hopefully will in turn delay the appearance of age-related disease and disabilities as a group, says geriatrics specialist Dr. James Kirkland of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

That’s in contrast to playing a “whack-a-mole game” of treating one disease only to see another spring up, he said.

The research has been done chiefly in mice. Earlier this year, the first test in people was published and provided some tantalizing results.

Zombie cells are actually called senescent cells. They start out normal but then encounter a stress, like damage to their DNA or viral infec-

tion. At that point, a cell can choose to die or become a zombie, basically entering a state of suspended animation.

The problem is that zombie cells release chemicals that can harm nearby normal cells. That’s where the trouble starts.

What kind of trouble? In mouse studies, drugs that eliminate zombie cells — so-called senolytics — have been shown to improve an impressive list of conditions, such as cataracts, diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, enlargement of the heart, kidney problems, clogged arteries and age-related loss of muscle.

Mouse studies have also shown a more direct tie between zombie cells and aging. When drugs targeting those cells were given to aged mice, the animals showed better walking speed, grip strength and endurance on a treadmill.

Even when the treatment was applied to very old mice, the equivalent of people ages 75 to 90, it extended lifespan by an average of 36 percent.

Researchers have also shown that transplanting zombie cells into young mice basically made them act older: Their maximum walking speed slowed down, and their muscle strength and endurance decreased.

Tests showed the implanted cells converted other cells to zombie status.

Kirkland and colleagues this year published the first study of a

zombie-cell treatment in people. It involved 14 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a generally fatal disease that scars the lining of the lungs.

Risk rises with age, and the lungs of patients show evidence of zombie cells.

In the preliminary experiment, after three weeks of treatment, patients improved on some measures of physical fitness, like walking speed. Other measures did not show improvement.

Overall, the results are encouraging and “it really raises enthusiasm to proceed with the more rigorous studies,” said Dr. Gregory Cosgrove, chief medical officer of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, who played no role in the study.

The field of zombie cells is still young. But Kirkland estimates at least a dozen companies have formed or have launched efforts to pursue treatments.

He holds shares in one.

Apart from age-related diseases, anti-zombie drugs might be useful for treating premature aging among cancer survivors that brings on the early appearance of some diseases, said Laura Niedernhofer of the University of Minnesota.

Some of these drugs have been approved for other uses or are even sold as supplements.

But Niedernhofer and Kirkland

stress that people should not try them on their own, nor should doctors prescribe them, for the uses now under study because more research has to be done first.

Niedernhofer said the best drugs may be yet to come. The goal is not to prevent stressed cells from turning into zombies, she said, because they may become cancerous instead. The aim is to trigger death of cells that have already transformed, or to limit the harm they do.

And what about giving them to healthy people who want to ward off aging? That’s possible but a long way off, after studies have established that the drugs are safe enough, she said.

“We may not get there,” Kirkland said.

In any case, experts are impressed by the research so far.

“I think this is very exciting,” said Dr. George Kuchel of the University of Connecticut Center on Aging in Farmington. The results from animal studies are “very spectacular.

It’s very compelling data.”

Nir Barzilai, a researcher of aging at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, said he believes targeting zombie cells will play a role in the overall effort to delay, stop and maybe reverse aging.

So much research suggests they promote aging that “we know that it should be true,” he said.

New diabetes cases fall as obesity rates on the rise

The number of new diabetes cases among U.S. adults keeps falling, even as obesity rates climb, and health officials aren’t sure why.

New federal data released May 28 found the number of new diabetes diagnoses fell to about 1.3 million in 2017, down from 1.7 million in 2009.

Earlier research had spotted a decline, and the new report shows it’s been going on for close to a decade. But health officials are not celebrating.

“The bottom line is we don’t know for sure what’s driving these trends,” said the lead author of the new report, Dr. Stephen Benoit of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Among the possibilities: Changes in testing and getting people to improve their health before becoming diabetic.

The report was published by the journal BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care. The statistics run through 2017. Last year’s numbers are not yet available, Benoit said.

Diabetes is a disease in which sugar builds up in the blood. The most common form is tied to obesity, and the number of diabetics ballooned as U.S. obesity rates increased.

But other factors also might have pushed up annual diabetes diagnoses from 2000 to 2010, and they may partly explain why the numbers have been going down since some experts said.

First, the diagnostic threshold was lowered in the late 1990s. That caused more people to be counted as diabetics, but the impact of that may have played out.

“We might have mined out a lot of the previously unrecognized cases” and so new diagnoses in the last several years are more likely to be actual new illnesses, said Dr. John Buse, a University of North Carolina diabetes expert.

Meanwhile, doctors have increasingly used a newer blood test to diagnose diabetes.

It’s much easier than tests that required patients to fast for 12 hours or to undergo repeated blood draws over two hours.

The American Diabetes Association recommended the new test, known as the hemoglobin A1C blood test, for routine screening in 2010.

Because it’s easier to do, it would

be expected to lead to more diagnoses. But some experts say it may miss a large proportion of early cases in which people aren’t showing symptoms.

“You may be missing people that would have been diagnosed” with older tests, Benoit said.

Another possibility: Increasingly, more doctors have been diagnosing “prediabetes,” a health condition in which blood sugar levels are high but not high enough to hit the diabetes threshold.

Physicians typically push such patients into exercise programs and urge them to change their diet.

“Prediabetes is becoming a more accepted diagnosis” and may be causing an increasing number of patients to improve their health before becoming diabetic, said Dr. Tannaz Moin, a UCLA expert.

The new report is based on a large national survey conducted by the government every year. Participants were asked if they had been diagnosed with diabetes, and also if the diagnosis was made in the previous year.

It found the rate of new diabetes cases fell to 6 per 1,000 U.S. adults in 2017, from 9.2 per 1,000 in 2009.

That’s a 35 percent drop and marks the longest decline since the government started tracking the statistic nearly 40 years ago, according to the CDC. The decrease was mainly seen among white adults, the researchers said.

Meanwhile, the overall estimate of how many Americans have diabetes — whether the diagnosis is recent or not — has been holding steady at 80 per 1,000 U.S. adults.

That translates to about 21 million Americans.

Diabetes has continued to become more common among young adults and people who are black and Hispanic, the report noted.

‘It’s all about community’

ne by one or in groups, cyclists coasted down a hill on Highway 83 and descended into Castle Rock and the finish line June 2 during the annual Elephant Rock Ride. The easy ride into Franktown was a chance for the cyclists to catch their breath and enjoy the view of Pike’s Peak on a cloudless morning.

About eight more miles along 86 and they would finish before some rolled out of bed on the Sunday morning.

“The best part of this are the views you get,” said Jack Cyrus, a 63-year-old from Castle Rock.

From Elephant Rock in Monument to the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Castle Rock, cyclists took over the roads throughout El Paso, Douglas and Elbert counties.

The 30-year-old event drew more than 5,000 riders for one of the biggest cycling events of the year in Colorado.

Participants could choose to ride from three road courses of 40, 58 and 100 miles, two gravel routes of 27 and 60 miles and an 8-mile family ride. As riders finished at the fairgrounds, they enjoyed beer, food and music at the riders-dream expo.

“It’s all about community,” said Rodger Hauch, 27, of Centennial. “It’s a chance for riders to celebrate the season with each other.”

The park includes trails for horses, but visitors must bring their own, Truitt said. Fishing is also allowed.

Roxborough State Park Located a few minutes south of Chatfield, Roxborough offers trails for every level of hiker, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s website.

“It’s got that beautiful red-rock formation that goes straight through the park,” Truitt said. Distinct plant life, as well as wildlife ranging from black bears to mule deer, add to the atmosphere.

And while the park is “extremely well-visited,” it’s one of the few state parks in the nation that has a gold standard recognition by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, Truitt said. That organization encourages visitors to leave natural areas “as good or better” than they found them, according to its website.

“The park feels remote,” Truitt said.

Castlewood Canyon State Park East of Castle Rock near Franktown sits Castlewood Canyon State Park, where climbers and hikers can get their fill of another area along the Cherry Creek.

The park “has great hiking trails,” Truitt said. “It’s busy, but not as busy as Cherry Creek or Chatfield.”

A natural amphitheater and the Bridge Canyon Overlook gazebo at the edge of the canyon serve as places for weddings or other outdoor ceremonies, and the park also offers picnic areas, according to the parks and wildlife site.

In the middle of the city If you’re looking to stay even closer to home, Crown Hill Park in the Wheat Ridge area typically has decent bird-watching opportunities, said Rosemary Dempsey, spokeswoman for Great Outdoors Colorado.

“I just discovered Cherry Knolls park,” said Dempsey, whose organization oversees a state trust fund to protect Colorado’s natural areas.

“It’s got a trail going through it, but

the most awesome thing is the creek with plenty of sandbars for the kids to splash around in.”

Cherry Knolls is located in west Centennial near South University Boulevard. And in the middle of Denver proper, City Park — not far outside downtown — offers views of the mountains and city buildings, Dempsey said.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Sporting a strange name for a wildlife region, Rocky Mountain Arsenal is larger than many cities in the metro area.

Following the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Army converted the land into a chemical weapons manufacturing facility to support World War II, according to the refuge’s website. Congress designated the site as a national wildlife refuge in the early 1990s.

THERE’S AN APP FOR PARKS The State of Colorado offers a free app called Colorado Trail Explorer, or COTREX, which it touts as “the most comprehensive trail map available for the state.”

“You can kind of tailor the hike you want to go on — it’ll bring up options,” such as for something dog-friendly, said Lauren Truitt, Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman.

You can see trails by allowed uses on the map and download offline maps for viewing in areas without cell service.

Located in the Commerce City area north of Interstate 70, the refuge offers “wildlife viewing and urban escapes,” Dempsey said.

Visitors can take a self-guided drive in their cars to watch wildlife on the land, a sanctuary for more than 330 species of animals, including bison, black-footed ferrets, deer, coyotes, bald eagles and burrowing owls, its website says.

It also offers 10 miles of hiking trails — and it’s free.

Other getaways For enjoyable views, William F. Hayden Park on Green Mountain — in Lakewood along C-470 — and North Table Loop Trailhead in the Golden area along State Highway 93 are notable spots, Dempsey said.

Inspiration Point Park, near I-70 and North Sheridan Boulevard, also overlooks a steep drop in elevation.

The name might have changed this year, but Denver Pop Culture Con was as brash and big as ever. Taking place at the Convention Center from May 31 through June 2, thousands of geeks, nerds, collectors and fans turned out to honor the writers, artists, actors and creators who have brought geek culture into the mainstream.

Famous onscreen performers from Doctor Who, “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “The Magicians” and “Back to the Future” were on hand to take photos and sign autographs, and hundreds of booths allowed for shopping, collecting and connection with fellow fans.

As is always the case, one of the main draws was cosplayers, who impressed with tributes to expected characters and series - plenty of Doctor Who, Star Wars, Game of Thrones and Marvel - as well as some delightful surprises like some choice “Big Lebowski” characters, several different species of dinosaurs and Barf from “Spaceballs.”

Dusty and Shaun Pack and Katrina Kendall came all the way from Wyoming to enjoy the con and showed off some seriously impressive Dragonball Super cosplay.

“Last year was around Father’s Day and this year’s con is right at the end of the school year,” Dusty said. “It’s a great way to celebrate.”

Three-year-old Greyson Cabrera from Aurora had his first cosplayer experience at Denver Pop Culture Con on June 1. He also had the chance to meet some of his favorite heroes, like Spider-Man.

The stars of the Colorado Professional Rodeo Association will return to Kiowa June 28-29 to celebrate Western heritage and patriotism at the 27th Cowboy Up in Kiowa Rodeo.

This year, rising country music star Richie Law performs after the rodeo each night. Richie was a finalist in Season 11 of “American Idol” and since then he has shared the stage with some of country music’s top stars including Darius Rucker, Jewel, Thompson Square, Sawyer Brown, Josh Turner and many others.

Richie and his band will start playing as soon as the rodeo ends until midnight each night.

The dance will be outdoors in the covered horse barn. In the case of inclement weather, the dance will move inside. The concert and dance are included with rodeo tickets.

Bowling bash provides backpacks to students in need Broncos safety Will Parks, teammates to host fundraiser in August at Main Event STAFF REPORT

Strikes for Kids plans the sixth annual Orange and Blue Bowling Bash to raise money for the organization’s backpack giveaway program, which provides backpacks filled with school supplies to famlies in need.

Broncos safety Will Parks will be joined by some of his teammates at the event, which takes place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20 at Main Event Entertainment Center, 64 Centennial Blvd., Highlands Ranch.

Check-in and registration begins at 5:30 p.m. and bowling takes place from 6-8 p.m. A silent auction and 50-50 raffle will take place from 7-7:45 p.m.

Registration cost is $200 and includes two hours of bowling and shoe rental for up to six bowlers, a pizza and pitcher of soda, two hours of

all-you-can-play arcade game cards, an event shirt and swag bag, a group photo with Will Parks, and raffle and silent auction participation.

In addition to providing 250 backpacks to the Boys and Girls Clubs Denver Broncos branch, Strikes for Kids will invite 75 kids out for an evening of arcade games and food while handing out backpacks.

The Strikes for Kids backpack program, presented by Dollar Days, provided about 2,000 backpacks will with school supplies in 2017 and 3,500 packs in 2018. In 2019, the goal is to provide more than 4,000 backpacks nationwide.

Strikes for Kids is a national charitable organization that organizes bowling, softball and golf events. The organization partners with professional athletes to allow fans to mingle with professional athletes for an afternoon of fun while supporting a charitable cause.

A performer who holds the record for the most live music performances in 24 hours will perform June 22 to help Eagle’s Nest Ranch celebrate its five-year anniversary of offering equine-assisted therapy.

Singer, songwriter, musician and talk radio host Scott Helmer holds the Guinness World Record holder for most live music performances in 24 hours (multiple cities).

As part of his year-long charity concert tour to raise money and awareness for equine-assisted therapy, Helmer will bring his “One-Man Rock and Country Music Show” to Elizabeth.

Since 2012, his fundraising concerts have raised more than $2 million for causes ranging from military veterans, suicide prevention, firstresponders, pet and animal rescues, food banks, historic places, those with special needs and more.

Eagle’s Nest Ranch is for people and horses to interact, build trust and experience growth, according to a news release.

Eagle’s Nest Ranch provides one-onone interactive sessions with a horse and sessions are offered free.

The ranch was founded by Suzy MacKenzie and serves adults and children who experience the invisible wounds of life. The ranch’s Healing Horses for the Armed Forces program serves the military community and its Soaring program serves all others.

She can help indeed — and soon the church is packed on Sundays — and we have a chance to get acquainted with the Monsignor (Brian Trampler), shy novice Sister Mary Robert (Bella Hawthorne) and more characters, including altar boys and additional singing, dancing nuns, cops and gangsters in a cast of 21 — a large cast for Town Hall’s limited stage space. Two-sport standout bound for Drake Caden Meis chosen Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year

Legend senior Caden Meis is a football player who excels on the lacrosse field.

He averaged 5.6 points, 3.6 ground balls and was the leading scorer among Class 5A lacrosse midfielders this season with 57 goals. In Douglas County League games he had a hat trick or better against every opponent and had a 4.6 average of goals per game.

Meis is the 2019 Colorado Community Media Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year.

“This year I went into not worrying about anything or putting anything on my shoulders,” said Meis. “I just went in having fun and giving it everything I got. I had a lot of fun. I feel I improved on a lot of things I worked on and I really think my confidence grew over time.

“A lot of goal scoring is your mental stability, your confidence and not worrying about missing the cage. You just have to take a chance and trust yourself.”

It has been said that everyone can have a bad day, and Smoky Hill sophomore Valerie Negin is smart enough to cope with that thought.

“I have good days and I have bad days,” she said. “Some days are bad and some days are better.”

Negin didn’t have any bad days, at least on the tennis court, this season.

She completed a 17-0 season by winning the CHSAA Class 5A singles champion and become the first Smoky Hill player to win a singles title in since Patti Urban in 1987.

Negin has been named the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Girls Tennis Player of the Year.

“She is a special player and a great teammate,” said Smoky Hill coach Jeffrey Davis. “She was voted our team

“She participates in the IB (International Baccalaureate) academic program at Smoky Hill, which can be very difficult to balance with tennis. Valerie is an outstanding student and athlete and excels in the classroom as much as she does on the court.”

This season’s state tournament was reduced to two days and Negin had to win a tough three-set semifinal match and come back to face Fairview’s So-

phie Pearson in the finals.

After losing the second set, she had two service breaks and broke Pearson’s serve to love in the eighth game to finish off a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 championship victory.

“I had to suck it up and play because it was the finals,” she said. “After the second set, I just said `Valerie this is it, whatever happens, happens. Blood, sweat and tears on the court.’

“It was crazy. The last match was my best match.”

es, it seems like the fall 2018-19 Colorado High School Sports Association sports season started just a couple weeks ago, but the spring campaign OVERTIME is now over. Some teams and individuals were left with unforgettable experiences, others with disappointments, and some hold onto hope for next season.

So I figured it Jim Benton was time to come up with some type of overall success ranking for the teams in the Colorado Community Media circulation area.

State championships are the goal of most teams and should be rewarded.

So we’ll give those teams 10 points, but getting there is a challenge and should be credited, as opposed to teams that don’t make the playoffs or get bounced in the first round.

So a runner-up finished will earn seven points and a final four appearance gets five points in the tabulations that include all sports ranging from field hockey to ice hockey.

There wasn’t time to wait for the finish of the baseball playoffs, so I gave semifinal teams Regis Jesuit, Mountain Vista, Cherry Creek, Grandview and Lutheran five points.

Just give the team that wins the state championships five additional points and the runner-up three points, but it won’t make a difference.

Cherry Creek garnered 52 points this spring thanks in part thanks to girls state tennis, boys lacrosse, and boys swimming state titles, plus second-place finishes in girls lacrosse and a fourth place in girls track, golf and a Final Four baseball appearance.

The Bruins, who also won the girls 5A state basketball title, finished with 95 points to outdistance Regis Jesuit with 62 points. Regis garnered maximum points for state titles in field hockey, boys tennis and ice hockey.

Valor Christian was third with 55 points. The Eagles won state championships in football, volleyball, and boys and girls track. Grandview wound up with 44 points, Lutheran 39, Arapahoe 32 and Mountain Vista 27.

Catching up Getting up to date on some news that might have been overlooked: • Allan Dyer, coach at Cherokee Trail from 2003-2017 who led the Cougars to a 5A state championship, is the new baseball coach at Rock Canyon. He replaces Garrett Duman, who compiled a 26-21 record in two seasons.

Regis Jesuit won its first Class 5A state baseball championship since 2011 thanks to pitching depth.

The Raiders defeated Cherry Creek 8-3 in the championship game on June 1 at All City Field.

“Our pitching has been outstanding,” Regis coach Matt Darr said. “It was the same thing in the title game.

When you have good pitching, you have a shot in every game. It was typical of our whole year.

“It’s been four seconds in championship games until this year, especially to Creek. That was big and it feels great.”

Cherry Creek, seeking its ninth state title, was making its 14th appearance in a state championship game.

The state title was the third for Regis and the first since 2011, when the Raiders beat Cherry Creek 15-10 in the final.

“The state title is well deserved,” said junior rightfielder Ethan O’Donnell.

“We worked real hard for this one.

Regis historically has had some of the best talent but we’ve been cursed in the postseason but here we had a special group of guys and a special pitching staff was exceptional this year.”

• Highlands Ranch junior quarterback Jake Rubley has been named to the National Quarterback Club 2019 Watch List.

That means he will be in the running for the High School Quarterback of the Year Award. Rubley’s dad, T.J., was recently appointed as the interim football coach at Highlands Ranch.

• Jayne McHugh, an Arvada West graduate who was inducted into the CHSAA Hall of Fame in 1991, has been named the new head girls volleyball coach at Valor Christian, McHugh, who has been coaching at St. Mary’s High School in Stockton, California, replaces Kaitlyn Hastings who stepped down after last season to spend more time with her family. She guided the Eagles to the 2018 5A state title. It was also announced that Brian Bonn is the new Valor athletic director.

• Eric Mingus, a former Grandview player, enrolled at New Mexico State for the 2018 baseball season and saw limited action in 13 games but he developed into the Aggies’ every-day third baseman for the 2019 season. He hit .332 with 53 runs batted in and was a first team All-Western Athletic Conference selection. “I came back and put a lot of work into baseball,” said Mingus. “We worked on my swing and a lot of it was having confidence in myself.”

O’Donnell belted a two-run homer to cap the four-run outburst.

“I got a pitch I was able to pull and I knew the minute I hit it that it was going to go out,” said O’Donnell. “It put the team in a good position to win. Coach Darr sat us down during the delay and said we still have our No. 1 on the mound and we have our No. 2 and No. 3 in the bullpen. Just go out there, score runs and we’re going to win.”

Creek, which used comebacks, steals of home and squeeze bunts to advance in the tournament, had chances to rally and left the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings. The Bruins sent four batters to the plate with the bases full but never got a hit but two runs did score on a walk and a fielder’s choice.

“We did everything we could,” said Creek coach Marc Johnson, who will head into next season with 806 career wins, one shy of the all-time Colorado record. “We got to where we couldn’t overcome what happened. Regis deserved it, they played great. They came in and had a lot of pitching on that club. They go deep. In that title game they were bringing in arm after arm.”

Creek finished with a 23-8 record and Regis was 24-6.
