The term began circulating on social media on May 8, a day after two students opened fire at the Highlands Ranch charter school, killing one student and leaving eight others injured. It would soon be

painted on cars, used as a hashtag on social media and printed on signs placed in front of homes and businesses across Highlands Ranch.

“It’s a small community,” said Kristen Rollin, whose son, a ninth grader, performed with the school band at the graduation ceremony. “We are strong.”

Stage set for public drinking in Parker Highlights from town council meeting held May 6

Legal consumption of alcohol in public places, an increase in the metro district tax and a ballot question to redefine the term limits for Parker elected officials highlighted the May 6 town council meeting.

Stage set for public drinking Parker Town Council set the stage for the legal possession and consumption of alcohol in public parks, and it’s a matter of time before a designated public drinking area is defined.

At the May 6 council meeting, town council approved two ordinances allowing for the public possession and consumption of alcohol in public parks, in response to the recently passed state statute allowing for the same, and for the town to designate an area for it.

A resolution to designate Discovery Park as a “pilot” spot was continued to be discussed at the next executive session May 13 to define the limits of the designation. Discovery Park was initially planned to be the first desig-

nated public drinking spot, but after further discussion and public comment, town council decided to further discuss confining the open drinking policy to be allowed only for special events and concerts.

“This goes back to … ‘How can we dip our toe in the water and see if this makes sense?’” said Councilmember John Diak. “Going to the concerts in the park at Discovery Park, if you take a look a little closely, you kind of see people doing stuff that, if this is passed, would be compliant. It started there. It started with Denver’s ordinance of the entire (city), and we met at a happy medium.”

The two ordinances passed unanimously.

The original resolution allowed for public drinking through the entire park, including areas near the Douglas County Public Library, water fountain, playground and ice ribbon. The resolution also adopted the no-glass stipulation from the state statute and added a restricted period for alcohol consumption between 4 p.m. to the park’s closing at 10 p.m.

The original resolution was scheduled to take effect May 27.

Under the new state law (SB18-23), effective at the beginning of this year, Coloradans can drink full-strength beer, wine and champagne in public parks so long as it’s not in a glass container. Municipalities still need to adopt a similar ordinance for it to be legal within the city or town limits and must define which spaces can allow public drinking. The resolution to make Discovery Park the first open-drinking public space will be tested for one year. After that, the town will decide whether to keep or repeal the ordinances.

and include an infrastructure capital mill levy (5 mills), a town-dedicated capital and maintenance mill levy (5 mills), and an operations and maintenance mill levy (10 mills). That would increase the current 53 mills of the metro district tax to between 72 and 77 mills. The maximum debt mill levy is subject to further adjustment in accordance with the Gallagher Amendment from 2019 forward. The current debt mill levy of 35 mills is restricted for town revenue at 47.3 mills.

For a $475,000 home, the new metro district tax would increase by about $600 to $2,633 per year, according to the request form.

Term limit redefinition put to a vote To provide councilmembers and the mayor time to work on long-term issues within the town and region more thoroughly, the town council voted to approve an ordinance to place a question on the Nov. 5 ballot asking whether to define the term limits of elected officials to cap their total service to 16 years.

Councilmembers and the mayor would be allowed to serve four fouryear terms combined as mayor or councilmember.

Juvenile STEM shooting suspect charged as adult Cases remain suppressed for at least two weeks

Approximately three hours before they would attend a memorial service for their slain son, 18-year-old Kendrick Castillo, Maria and John Castillo sat in the front row of a Douglas County district courtroom during hearings for his alleged killers.

They are a strong couple, said 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler, who said they intend to be at every hearing for the suspects in the May 7 shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch, which also left eight other students injured.

The Castillos watched as two key revelations emerged during the May 15 hearing in Castle Rock, the second court appearances for the two suspects, Devon Erickson, 18, and Alec McKinney, 16.

First, their cases will remain suppressed for at least two weeks, meaning many details of the allegations against them remain sealed. Authorities have not released any information on a possible motive for the attack.

Second, Brauchler has decided to charge the juvenile suspect as an adult.

15 and requested the juvenile version of the case be dismissed. Defense attorneys immediately discussed their request to transfer the case back to juvenile court.

Colorado Community Media did not name McKinney before the decision to charge the teen as an adult. Although he is referred to by his legal name of Maya Elizabeth McKinney on court documents, he goes by the name Alec, his attorney said.

On May 7, the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office identified him as a male but said the next morning further interviews revealed McKinney to be female.

His attorney told presiding District Judge Theresa Slade McKinney prefers male pronouns.

Both he and his co-defendant, Erickson, will return to court in June for status hearings as attorneys reconvene to discuss the ongoing investigation and what evidence is available in discovery.

From there, the court will schedule preliminary hearings.

Brauchler, in a media conference after the hearings, declined to comment on information about the case not discussed in open court because Slade chose to keep files sealed. That included the affidavit and probable cause statements.

But court records made available online earlier in the day show each suspect faced 48 charges going into the hearings.

Erickson faces a variety of murder charges, including first-degree murder after deliberation, first-degree murder with extreme indifference and attempted first-degree murder after deliberation.

He also was accused of burglary, arson, theft and providing or permitting a juvenile to possess a handgun, among other charges.

McKinney was charged similarly, along with possessing a handgun as a juvenile, among numerous other charges. Brauchler said he planned to charge him with first-degree murder.

In his first court appearance May 8, Erickson sat stooped deep in his seat, head hanging low and speaking only when Slade required he verbally answer a question. On May 15 he sat upright and peered at the judge through dark-framed glassed beneath hair half-dyed pink.

On May 15, McKinney entered the courtroom and smiled slightly at his attorneys. He did not speak except when responding to the judge, smiling again at attorneys after answering Slade’s questions. At one point he appeared to look back toward his family, expressionless.

Brauchler opposed setting a status hearing between the May 15 appearances and a preliminary hearing. The status hearing calls for Erickson to be back in court June 7 and McKinney on June 14. Preliminary hearings have not yet been scheduled.

“We are only drawing out this pro-

cess,” he said.

Defense attorneys for both suspects said they had not received any items of discovery and wanted time to review that information once it is made available.

They expected it to be voluminous, said McKinney’s attorney, public defender Ara Ohanian.

Slade granted the requests for status hearings so attorneys could be prepared best as possible, she said.

A portion of the STEM school where the shooting occurred May 7 remained closed off as of May 15 and under investigation, even as some students returned to classes. Brauchler said defense attorneys had been given access to the remainder of the site, which he described as about “97 percent” of the school.

He also had suggested unsealing case files except for the affidavit and probable cause statements.

Defense attorneys requested the case remain suppressed to protect witness statements from being tainted by information made public if files were released.

After the hearing, Brauchler told media he had referred an investigation into a private security guard who worked at STEM to 4th Judicial District Attorney Dan May after news reports surfaced that the guard may have fired his weapon in the direction of a sheriff ’s office deputy as law enforcement responded to the school May 7.

Experts weigh benefits of school resource officers STEM School relies on private security firm rather than SRO

Leaders in school safety and law enforcement agree that school resource officers offer more than security.

They provide education about issues like cyberbullying and dating violence and engrain themselves in the student body, said Lt. Lori Bronner, who oversees the SROs at Douglas County School District. When threats are made against schools, they work with administrators to track down the origin.

“They are part of that school community,” Bronner said at a May 13 work session held by Douglas County commissioners, when additional funding for school security was discussed.

“They are friends, they are family.

That school, those students are part of their heart and their soul.”

STEM School Highlands Ranch, where a school shooting on May 7 left one student dead and eight others injured, doesn’t have an SRO. For more than a year it has contracted with a private security firm that employs men and women with military backgrounds as guards.

In the wake of tragedy, questions linger on the effectiveness of an SRO versus a private security firm and the future of security at Douglas County schools. A large barrier to school security, experts in education and law enforcement say, is funding.

Douglas County School District and county officials say they are working toward solutions. On May 13, Douglas County commissioners held a special work session to discuss allocating $10 million to heighten school safety in Douglas County following the STEM tragedy.

Their work session motion named “physical entryway security technology and mental health services for children,” as well as “a community response team for kids in schools, with the option to consider safety on-site specialists” and to “specifically train school resource officers dedicated solely to school security.”

Commissioners unanimously approved directing staff to prepare a supplemental budget item for their May 28 meeting that allocates the one-time $10 million toward school safety. That is when the decision to dedicate the money will be formally considered.

Most community members agree that change is imminent. What that looks like is up for debate.

Severing ties At the end of the 2017-18 school year,

the sheriff ’s office ended its existing contract with STEM that provided an SRO to the school half time. STEM paid $26,925, the same amount as SkyView Academy, the school it shared the SRO with, according to a copy of the contract. The sheriff ’s office covered the remaining $53,850, for a total cost of $111,850 for the year.

Sheriff Tony Spurlock said STEM did not properly use its SRO, who was mainly asked to direct traffic, citing that as a main reason for the discontinuation of the contract, according to documents released by the sheriff ’s office on May 10.

The charter school — which under Colorado law operates on its own as a separate nonprofit entity but receives public funding — began contracting with the private security company BOSS High Level Protection, based in Greenwood Village. A security guard was on site at the time of the shooting and reportedly helped detain one of the suspects. The owner of the firm declined to say if the guard was armed.

“The unfortunate fact is that schools with and without SROs have experienced violence,” reads a May 10 statement from STEM’s public relations firm. “With regard to the tragedy on May 7, 2019, we credit both the actions of our private security guard, the team of DCSO law enforcement officials who were on scene within two minutes, and the heroic students and

staff members at STEM for minimizing the number of fatalities and casualties.”

After news reports surfaced that the guard may have fired his weapon in the direction of a sheriff ’s office deputy as law enforcement responded to the school May 7, 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler told media he had referred an investigation into the private security guard’s actions.

‘A spectrum’ John McDonald, who is in charge of school safety and security at Jefferson County Public Schools, the state’s second largest school district with 85,000 students, doesn’t know if there is a gold standard for school safety, he said.

He does know that it begins with a good climate and culture. McDonald is recognized nationally for rebooting his district’s security protocols following the 1999 Columbine High School shooting.

“School safety is a spectrum. It’s mental health, threat assessment, target hardening, active shooter planning,” McDonald said. “It’s focusing on working with our kids so that schools are a place where they are free of threat and intimidation and bullying, and they are a place where kids thrive and learn and grow.”

Parents, community members seek school security solutions Board of education meeting draws public comment on a variety of options

McDonald stresses three types of school security: SROs, armed security teams and private security firms.

SROs and security teams — who are trained to operate in schools and work closely with local law enforcement, unlike private security firms, which serve public and private clients — tend to be highly trained in areas of de-escalation and active shooter response, as well as student engagement. Most have law enforcement backgrounds.

By definition, an SRO is a sworn, certified law enforcement officer, according to Mo Canady, executive director of the National Association of School Resource Officers. They’re deployed in the school community in a “policing-based strategy” and differ from other types of security in that their main goal is to bridge the gap between law enforcement and youths, Canady said.

“SROs have an opportunity to gather a lot of valuable intelligence,” Canady said. “Relationship are not just built with students but also with parents, with education personnel. It’s a very holistic, if you will, approach to this. It’s not just, put an armed guard in place and hope they can stop the event. It’s much more in-depth than that.”

Common protocol McDonald’s concern with private security firms, such as the one utilized by STEM, is training.

“It’s important to make sure there is a training component to your hiring,” McDonald said. “Training has to be aligned with the training of your local law enforcement agencies.”

Grant Whitus, owner of BOSS Level Security, would not disclose details about the company’s training, citing the ongoing investigation by the sheriff ’s office.

He confirmed that he trains his guards using the standard response protocol, a universal response to school emergencies that includes lockdowns, lockouts and evacuation procedures. A lockout is used when there is a threat outside of the school. A lockdown is used when the threat is inside of a school.

DCSD’s safety and security department uses the same protocol. In the STEM shooting, deputies were on scene within minutes of the call. A sheriff ’s substation is located less than a mile from the school.

Tragedies like the STEM school shooting force schools and districts to take a hard look at what they want and need in terms of security measures, as well as climate and culture, McDonald said.

“Today, it’s not just that our students and staff need to feel safe,” McDonald said. “They need to be safe.”

Last year’s election gave the district a funding boost for school security, and more money may be on the way.

About $15 million of a $250 million bond approved by voters in November is going toward physical security measures, such as door locks and cameras. Of a $40 million mill levy override, $6 million is helping fund 85 additional counselors in elementary, middle and high schools.

In addition, Douglas County commissioners held a special work session May 13 to discuss allocating $10 million to improve school safety throughout the district following the shooting.

While most speakers at the May 14

meeting agreed that mental health must be a priority, suggestions on physical security measures varied.

Marni McMillan, a Parker parent, wants the district to act immediately by installing metal detectors at all middle and high schools, with one way in and out, she said. Down the road, she would like to see money go toward hiring more counselors and training armed personnel.

“We need action now and a solution now,” McMillan said to the school board. “One that allows us to drop off our kids this fall and not have a sick feeling in the pit of our stomach.”

Jen Shocker, who has an 8-year-old son in the district, said she opposes metal detectors, citing studies that deem the measure ineffective in certain settings.

SROs and Douglas County schools What do they cost and how many are there?

Costs to fund a school resource officer are typically split between the law enforcement agencies providing them and the organizations receiving services.

The Douglas County School District, the state’s third largest, has agreements with local law enforcement agencies to cover half the cost of each officer. Salaries vary by jurisdiction and officer, but the average cost covered by the school district is $62,934, according to the school district.

Today, the school district says 11 resource officers from three law enforcement agencies — the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, the Parker Police Department and the Castle Rock Police Department — serve county schools. An officer’s primary coverage area is the high school he or she is assigned to, but the officer also assists at a middle school.

A resource officer is on campus at each of the district’s nine neighborhood high schools and SkyView Academy, a pre-K through 12th-grade charter school in Highlands Ranch, as well as Valor Christian, a private high school.

The schools range in size from Valor’s roughly 1,100 students to Mountain Vista’s more than 2,300.

Thirteen school marshals from four jurisdictions — the sheriff ’s office and the Castle Rock, Parker and Lone Tree police departments — also serve the district. The law enforcement officers cover elementary schools but are not assigned to any particular campus. Rather, they make multiple, unannounced daily visits to various schools That’s all in a school district of 68,000 students, roughly the population of Castle Rock.

This means some SROs are responsible for overseeing more than 2,000 high school students in addition to assisting the middle schools that feed into them. Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock has said that’s not sufficient.

Previous recommendations were to place one SRO per 1,000 students, according to the National Association of School Resource Officers, but the organization recommends considering factors like campus size, school climate and location when determining a number.

HIGH SCHOOLS WITH RESOURCE OFFICERS Here’s a list of high schools in Douglas County that are assigned an SRO: • ThunderRidge High School, 1,996 students • Highlands Ranch High School, 1,663 students • Chaparral High School, 2,202 students • Mountain Vista High School, 2,332 students • Rock Canyon High School, 2,291 students • Ponderosa High School, 1,407 students • Douglas County High School, 1,811 students • Castle View High School, 2,175 students • Legend High School, 2,196 students • SkyView Academy, 1,300 students • Valor Christian High School (private school), 1,094 students

NASRO Executive Director Mo Canady said less than half the nation’s 100,000 school buildings have an SRO, and some officers are responsible for overseeing five to six buildings alone.

He believes that’s mostly because of a lack of funding.

“That is not effective,” Canady said. “There definitely are not enough SROs.” NASRO challenges federal, state and local governments to fund at least one SRO for every school building in the community, he said. SROs differ from approaches like an armed guard or private security because they focus on building a stronger relationship between youth and law enforcement, Canady said. He added SROs also gather intelligence from the school community, and in some case have investigated the information and stopped acts of violence before they occurred.

Here’s a snapshot of other security measures in Douglas County schools, according to a county report compiled in April from sheriff ’s office and school district sources: • Each high school and middle school campus has on-site campus security specialists with a total of 54 unarmed security specialists. The specialists promote proactive security services and a safe school environment, according to the school district.

• A school district Dispatch Communications Center operates 24 hours a day and staffs a combination of 18 employees, armed personnel and security technicians.

• Schools are monitored by cameras, doors have locks and some windows are covered with a ballistic film — a bullet-resistant glass. Radios allow for constant communication between schools and law enforcement agencies.

After the May 7 tragedy, members of STEM leadership inquired about using the training facility, which is near Centennial Airport in unincorporated Arapahoe County, for graduation. The Broncos, Eucker said, “didn’t hesitate.”

The inside of the venue, an expansive turf field lined with rows of white seats, filled with a culturally diverse crowd of hundreds of grandparents, parents and young children. Law enforcement from Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, Colorado State Patrol and South Metro Fire Rescue stood in small groups on the outskirts, watching over the crowd.

“We’ve always been a STEM family, but the recent events made us even stronger,” senior Kathryn Naherny said. She started at STEM in the sixth grade and was ecstatic to be graduating. “It’s mostly just brought the STEM community closer together.”

The 121 graduates took over the first six rows. A single seat remained empty. On it rested a framed photo of Kendrick Castillo, the only fatality in the shooting, who died when he charged the shooter to save others.

“On May 7 we lost our innocence when we lost one of our own — Kendrick Castillo,” Penny Eucker, STEM’s executive director, told the graduates.

“Kendrick Castillo was the best example of STEM character traits. He has inspired all of us to be kind, inclusive, and to strive to be our very best.”

Mike Shallenberger, an engineering teacher who shared a close bond with Castillo, gave the graduation speech he had planned before May 7 happened. It was the speech he would’ve wanted Castillo to hear, he said.

Continue to care for one another, Shallenberger said. Remember to invest in friends and family. Be compassionate. Be kind.

“I hope that someday it is as easy for us to talk about loving one another as it is to talk about a new TV show, movie or something we saw online,” Shallenberger said.

Salutatorian Rooya Rahin thanked l“the heroes of room 107.” Along with Castillo, seniors Brendan Bialy and Joshua Jones helped take down one of the two suspects. Jones was injured but is recovering; Bialy was not injured. Her recognition received a standing ovation from the crowd.

STEM students “defy and embrace the stereotypes that make a nerd,” Rahin said. They know how to master all-things science, tech, engineering and math. They also know how to laugh at memes, goof around and dance their hearts out at homecoming celebrations.

“We are STEM kids and the sense of community we have created for ourselves is one of acceptance and support,” Rahin said. “These difficult days have only reinforced that while our school may not be invincible, while we may not be invincible... we are STEM strong.” e The graduates, beaming with excitement, lined up to receive their diplomas. The road ahead for STEM is not linear, Eucker said the morning after graduation. She has been seeking recommendations from other school leaders who have endured tragedy, such as Frank DeAngelis, principal at Columbine High School when a 1999 mass shooting killed 12 students and one teacher. More than 12 mental health professionals remain at STEM to assist staff and students.

“Everything we do is a struggle because of the grief, but we also know Kendrick would’ve wanted our school to emerge stronger,” Eucker said. “I think, with abundant mental health support and community support, we are all taking one step at a time.”

‘When I think of Kendrick, I think of love’ Thousands gather to honor Kendrick Castillo at celebration of life service

That was the overarching message at a May 15 celebration of life service at Cherry Hills Community Church.

More than 3,500 people gathered at the church to honor Castillo, the sole fatality in the May 7 school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch that left eight other students injured. Less than two weeks away from graduating, the 18-year-old charged one of the two suspects to save other students.

The crowd — a mix of STEM students and families, law enforcement, politicians, Douglas County School District leaders and local residents — filled the sanctuary of the Highlands Ranch church to celebrate Castillo, a young man who, by most accounts, lived and learned more in his 18 years than most do in a lifetime.

“Kendrick just seemed to be happiest when he was serving others, but he did this humbly,” Charlene Molis, Kendrick’s principal at Notre Dame School from kindergarten through eighth grade, said to the crowd. “We

are all better people for having known Kendrick, and now he is our guardian angel.”

A group of young men, friends of Kendrick, carried a gray casket, adorned with bouqets of bright yellow roses down an aisle to the front of the sanctuary. On the stage were a kayak, black and red dress jackets hanging from the ceiling and an elaborate robot, all pieces of Castillo’s life. He wore the red jacket when he ushered at his church. He was on two robotics teams at STEM. And he loved to adventure outdoors.

Friends, family and teachers who spoke at the service painted a picture of Castillo and the impact he had on others.

Molis remembers Kendrick’s first

day of kindergarten. He saw a kid crying across the room, so he walked over, put his arm around the child and told him it was going to be OK. He gave 110 percent in everything, Molis said. When he dressed up as a cowboy, he was the best-dressed cowboy in the room.

“When he went to Mass, he wore his signature, three-piece suit,” Molis said. Guests in the audience chuckled.

Castillo was a friend to many.

He met Jordon Monk in an engineering class. The two had a lot in common — detailing cars, tinkering with electronics, the movie “Wayne’s World,” the song “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

“No matter how silly or crazy we looked, we didn’t care — because we had the time of our lives doing it,”

Monk said.

Two pastors and a reverend, who each represented a different church in the Denver metro area, encouraged hope, love and healing in the community. A member of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal service organization to which Castillo belonged, along with a few of Castillo’s teachers, reflected on the difference Castillo made in the world.

Mike Shallenberger, Castillo’s engineering teacher for four years, laid over Castillo’s casket an honor cord for his involvement in STEM’s Technology Student Association.

“When I think of Kendrick,” Shallenberger said, “I think of love.”

In his father’s eyes, Castillo was a “gift” and a “hero.”

He was a man of faith, John Castillo told the audience. He knew right from wrong. He cared deeply about his family and friends.

“To carry on his life’s message, we need to be more like him,” said John.

His wife, Maria, was seated behind him. “When somebody is struggling and moving into darkness, you need to sit down with them and figure it out.”

John emphasized the importance of making time for one another, of being present. He wants to do just that for the friends Kendrick left behind. His door is open, he said. He’s a phone call away. He wants to hear the stories of his son.

“Love is simple,” John said. “I didn’t teach him that, he taught me.”

‘We have to say thank you’

When Doug Till saw the television news about a Jeep processional to honor Kendrick Castillo, the 18-yearold who died while trying to protect other students during a shooting at his school, he decided he had to pay his respects.

“Our society is getting to where we have to lay down our lives to protect other people,” said Till, who lives in Arizona but was visiting in Westminster, “and that’s what Kendrick did.”

About 250 Jeep enthusiasts gathered in Highlands Ranch on May 15 to ride in a procession ahead of a celebration of life service for Castillo.

Vehicles came from outside the metro area, with some having Arizona, Wyoming and Utah license plates, to honor the teen killed in the May 7 STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting. He was one of three STEM students who reportedly subdued one of the shooting suspects.

Castillo was passionate about his green Jeep Cherokee and enjoyed working on cars, friends say.

“There’s probably 2 percent (of participants) that know the family, let alone Kendrick, but that’s what this Jeep community is about,” said Doug McDowell of Highlands Ranch. “For me, it’s for the family.”

Castillo “was an angel in our midst,” said Alexander, a Highlands Ranch resident. about a mile away from Cherry Hills Communiity Church, where the celebration of life was to take place in the early afternoon. The Jeeps were escorted by Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office deputies on their ride to the church.

It’s rare that a civilian receives a processional led by law enforcement, but officials said Castillo embodied the spirit of the officers by giving his life to protect others.

“For us, our sheriff wanted to honor

Kendrick and the school, because it’s what we do. We’re here to protect people,” said Tim Ralph, the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office chaplain. “We have to say thank you.”

About 20 students from Valor Christian High School — just across the street — walked over to line Grace Boulevard before the processional.

ore than 80 men, decorated in red, purple and green regalia, gathered in front of St. Mary Catholic Parish in Littleton. The Knights of Columbus traveled from across Colorado to honor Kendrick Castillo, a young man who aspired to be one of their own.

Friends and families — many parents arrived hand-in-hand with their young ones — trickled into the church for the May 17 funeral. Inside the sanctuary, surrounded by windows of colorful stained glass, Auxiliary Bishop Jorge Rodriguez spoke of faith and hope to the crowd of hundreds.

Castillo, the 18-year-old killed in the

May 7 school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch, has “left this world of evil to be with God,” Rodriguez said.

The procession led guests to Seven Stones, a cemetery and botanic garden near Chatfield State Park, about eight miles south of the church. Golden rays beamed through a cloud-covered sky as a soft breeze blew through aspen trees, woven among manicured grass and headstones of granite, glass and metal. The mountains, a place where Castillo loved to fish and hunt, stood tall in the background.

There, surrounded by the epitome of Colorado beauty, is where John and Maria Castillo laid to rest their son, a hero who risked his life to save the people he loved.

FIRST robotics teams bring robots to memorial service

On the stage at Cherry Hills Community Church, a robot stood in honor of Kendrick Castillo, who was killed in the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting.

That robot was built by STEM Impulse — or team 4418 — a group of robotics enthusiasts that included Castillo.

“We want to have people remember Kendrick’s love for robotics,” said Miles Gregg, a 17-year-old from Highlands Ranch and a member of another local robotics team. “He wanted to become an engineer.”

Those teams are part of FIRST — For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology — a notfor-profit engagement program for science, technology, engineering and math worldwide.

Robots by teams from around Colorado lined the walkway to the church at a May 15 memorial service in Highlands Ranch for Castillo.

“The teams, students, are here today,” said Tom Inkel, an official with FIRST, which is based in New Hampshire. “The community is really bonded.”

Two members on Gregg’s team are STEM School students and also attended the service, Gregg said.

On May 9, two days after the shooting at STEM, a blog post on FIRST’s website noted Castillo’s death.

“I don’t have the words for this blog,” the post by Frank Merrick read.

“They are all too small to encompass how senseless this all is, our pain for

Castillo rushed a shooter during the incident and possibly prevented other deaths, witnesses have said, as the post noted.

Legislators forming committee to focus on school safety Panel to be named

by June 1 in response to attack at STEM School STAFF REPORT

Legislators are prioritizing school safety following the May 7 shootings at STEM School Highlands Ranch.

On May 17, members of the state House and Senate announced the pending formation of an interim committee focused on studying school safety in Colorado, according to a news release. The committee will look at issues related to school safety, mental health and the prevention of threats to students, staff and volunteers statewide.

Supporters of the committee include House GOP Leader Patrick Neville, of Castle Rock, and Senate Minority Leader Chris Holbert, R-Parker.

In the release, Holbert pointed out that 178 school districts in Colorado operate under local control, per state constitution.

“We also have voluminous state statute already on the books regard-

ing emergency response planning and armed security in our public schools,” Holbert said. “This interim committee will begin its work by reviewing those statutes, the division of constitutional authority between school districts and state government, and then they will move forward on proposing solutions to better protect students.”

Neville pointed out what has been done.

“We began the process last year by providing financial assistance to schools to secure their facilities and fund trained personnel to enhance physical protection,” he said in the release. “We’ve also provided funding to enable professionals to come alongside students to assist with their personal needs should tragedy strike. We will do more.”

Two members from each caucus in both chambers will serve on the bipartisan committee, which will have the opportunity “to seek testimony from a wide range of experts to aid in their mission.” Members of the committee — who will be appointed

by June 1 — will meet three times during the interim session and have the ability to recommend legislation.

The first time I read Hemingway’s six words, I might have said, “How sad.”

But then my sense of interpretation kicked in.

Maybe the shoes were too small, and nothing else. Or maybe the kid was born with two left feet. the program to board, parents, teachers and answer questions. Her expert trainers from the military and police have trained 150 school staff in 30 Colorado school districts.

All are volunteers, and most already have their concealed carry permits.

There have been NO incidents that the anti-gun lobby fears: No teacher has accidentally shot anyone, no student has wrestled a gun from a staff member, etc. And this training is virtually free, paid for by donations.

The deterrent is not actually the guns; it’s that the attacker doesn’t know who has firearms or where.

One of the topics I deal with when speaking with individuals and companies is time management. When this subject comes up, I usually start with a question, “What are you trying to make time for?” Typically, the response comes after a long pause, “Well, everything,” they say. After digging deeper

and forcing them to become very specific relative to what they are trying to make time for, we almost always get to a point of self-awareness. They realize it’s not so much time management, it’s what they are willing to make room for in their life or in their business.

Where does gratitude and appreciation fit into this? Everywhere.

Most of us are willing to overcommit, double book ourselves and our time, and make room for things that are important to us, that benefit us in some way, and maybe even make room for things and activities that don’t involve those closest to us. And what happens here is that this pressure builds up as we are spread too thin, we try and meet too many demands, and we become our own worst enemies.

In a time-compressed world where we are overcommitted and double booked, and we are feeling pressure and stress, we can still make room for gratitude and appreciation.

When it comes to time, let me ask you, how long does it take to say, “Thank you”? How many seconds does it take to tell someone, “You rock!” Does it take more than 30 seconds of time to write an email to someone or the team saying, “Great work, the team crushed it.”

Elizabeth, Colorado soldier, US Army Corporal Tyler James Groves died May 11th, 2019, in Nolanville, TX as a result of a car accident.

Tyler James Groves was born January 12th, 1997 in Aurora, Colorado.

He and his parents, Robert and Sarah Groves, lived in Castle Rock, Colorado where Tyler attended grade school at Castle Rock Elementary.

In 2002 Tyler, his parents and his younger sister Karissa moved to Elizabeth, Colorado. He graduated from Elizabeth High School in 2015.

Tyler was an outgoing toddler and youth who loved the outdoors and often spent time at his grandparents Buffalo Ranch east of Kiowa and with his other grandparents who lived in Elbert.

Groves always wanted to be a soldier,

so he enlisted in the Army in 2014. He was a Corporal; US Army Troop Golf, First Battalion, Twelfth Calvary Regiment, Third Brigade Combat Team, Fort Hood. New rail stations a vision of future Southeast Rail Extension now serving riders in Lone Tree

Lone Tree Mayor Jackie Millet got off the light rail train at the new Lone Tree City Center Station and walked across to the other side of the tracks, toward a sea of prairie to the east as far as the eye could see.

Millet was there with officials from the city and the Regional Transportation District a few days ahead of the grand opening of the Southeast Rail Extension.

“Let’s envision a future,” Millet said May 14, referring to an area that will eventually be considered by many to be the heart of Lone Tree.

On May 17, the grand opening celebration was the culmination of a long journey. It fulfills the promise that initially attracted major employers, such as Charles Schwab. It completes rail transit through Lone Tree with the end-of-line RidgeGate Station near the 24-year-old city’s southern border. And it means major economic growth, setting the stage for RidgeGate East, with plans including attainable housing and a “downtown” area.

As Millet spoke May 17 at RidgeGate Station, she asked former mayors Jim Gunning and Jack O’Boyle to join her on stage, where she handed each a track baton, a symbolic gesture to the way the three mayors have passed the baton to complete the project.

“We have been waiting for this extension almost since the day the city was founded,” Millet said. “As the south metro area continues to grow, this is going to be a vital link for the community…This one element of transit brings all the communities of Douglas County together and we are honored to be here today acknowledging that.”

O’Boyle credited Gunning, mayor from 2008-16, for laying the groundwork for the project.

“Without the persistant tenacity of Mayor Gunning, it is not likely that we would be here today,” O’Boyle, mayor from 1996 to 2008, said. “Without your good works, ideas, vision and plan, it would still be just a dream.”

Though the wait for the project has spanned years, dating to before Sky Ridge Medical Center opened in 2003, RTD officials touted the project for being on time and under budget. With contributions from private dignitaries and a $92 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration, the 2.3-mile rail extension has been a priority for businesspeople and politicians alike. The $233 million project is expected to make an economic impact on the city surpassing $1 billion, officials say.

The project brings three new light rail stations south of Lincoln Station for the E, R and F lines.

“It’s a significant time period from conception to realization,” RTD CEO Dave Genova said. “We’re more than just about serving people, we’re about economic develpement too, and it’s going to be exciting watching this over the next few years.”

The Sky Ridge Station is the largest of the three and the only one completely built out so far. At the doorstep of Sky Ridge Medical Center and a stone’s throw from the Charles Schwab campus, it is projected to be the most used station out of the gate. It includes a statue mirroring the iconic Lone Tree city logo.

To get to the Lone Tree City Center Station, the train travels over I-25 on a new bridge, making the rail the only route that goes over I-25 in the entire light rail system. It brings passengers to the currently empty RidgeGate East neighborhood.

The RidgeGate Station includes a new Park-N-Ride parking garage and a piece of art made up of different brands of nearby ranches, including the “JS” brand for Schweiger Ranch, just south of the station.

Doug Tisdale, RTD board chairman, emceed the May 17 event and gave a nod to the amount of collaboration it took from private and public partners to complete this project.

“This project is all about vision,” Tisdale said. “Vision from local leadership and a vision for the future. From where I am standing now, it’s a truly great vision. Before you know it, this area will be an economic epicenter.”

Mike Roueche, chairman of the committee, said he doesn’t believe the My Mainstreet Project results appropriately represented the desires of most of the town.

“Last time the town council developed plans for what they wanted to see on Pine Curve and never allowed open space or a rec center or other municipal use to be considered.

They essentially told citizens, ‘You can have it in any color you want, as long as it’s gray,’” Roueche said.

“The community didn’t want gray.

Unfortunately, the town’s taken virtually the same philosophical approach. They did research but again didn’t allow consideration of any other outcome than commercial development.”

lot can change in eight years — something Littleton residents Kendra, Jason and Ash Alder can readily attest to when it comes to how Denver Pop Culture Con has evolved since its first iteration in 2012.

“When we first started going, it wasn’t nearly as big as it has become,” Kendra said. “When I was growing up, nerd culture was very taboo, but it’s done a complete 180.

When I would mention a lot of this stuff, people had never heard of it.

Now everyone knows.”

“Since inception, our event has been about inclusivity and bringing different fandoms together for a weekend-long celebration; comics culture has always been a key component but not the entire focus,” Angel wrote. “While it’s true that ‘comic con’ is often synonymous with pop culture conventions, we didn’t feel that it told the whole story.”

The worlds created in comics from Marvel, DC and countless other studios remain the wellspring for many films and television shows that have made nerd culture everyone’s culture — and the con is a great way to bridge the gap between these fans.

“At our store, that’s one of the things we talk about the most — how to connect people who see all the movies with the stories we have at our store,” said Jonthan Garnett, owner of Hall of Justice Comics and Collectibles in Parker, which has had a booth at the con for about the past five years. “If you’re a fan of something you’ve seen onscreen, there’s a good chance we have something that will scratch that itch.”

“They want all kinds of people to keep coming back, and that’s why they do,” Kendra said. “You can do what you want, be free, and not be ashamed of what you like.”

Another way the con works to keep bringing people back is by fostering the next generation of nerds.

The event is a program of the Pop Culture Classroom, a nonprofit focused on youth literacy, Angel said.

The work the group does all year is supported by the con. As for the actual event, all kinds of options exist beyond shopping and getting a photo with a favorite celebrity.

“Programming also includes exciting kid- and teen-focused activities and events in The Lab, which is a large space on the show floor dedicated to young folks,” Angel wrote. “The lab activities can include anything from learning to draw a famous character, to presentations and workshops, to finding out how to one day work for NASA or become an actor.”

For Garnett and many other attendees and exhibitors, the con is a chance for real connection with fans of all ages.

Kendra said Ash particularly enjoys the con’s cosplaying aspect.

But she loves immersing him in comic culture because of the positive way it affects him and other children.

“We take our niece as well, and their favorite part is taking pictures with as many cosplayers as possible,” she said. “I think it’s all a great influence on kids, and especially is great for reading. I always see it like going to Disneyland — you’re meeting the characters you’ve seen on the big screen, right there.”

Fort Logan bore witness to Western history Beyond veterans’ cemetery is old Army post dating to 1880s

ention Fort Logan to most people in the Denver area, and they’ll picture Fort Logan National Cemetery, where thousands of America’s veterans lay beneath rows of precisely-laid headstones.

But just up the hill from the solemn silence of the cemetery is the old Army fort itself, now hosting an array of mental health facilities, where much of the stately 19th-century architecture still stands.

Tucked away in far-south Denver near Sheridan Boulevard and Quincy Avenue, Fort Logan is “a place where you can step out of your car, take a moment to reflect, and envision the contributions of men who helped make Colorado,” said Bart Berger, whose great-grandfather Col. Henry Merriam once commanded the fort.

Visitors today can wander the fort, taking in the grand Victorian buildings of Officers’ Row, or pay a visit to the fort museum to gain a better sense of a place that played a role in pivotal moments of the American saga.

A growing nation By the 1880s, with the Transcontinental Railroad nearly 20 years old and the West’s indigenous people forced onto reservations, the Army was looking to close and consolidate its far-reaching network of pioneer-era forts, said Dr. Jack Ballard, a retired Air Force Academy history professor whose book “Images of America: Fort Logan” is one of the few sources that deals at length with the fort’s history.

natural location for a new urban-type fort, Ballard said, and “Denver leaders campaigned hard for the fort. It represented a huge economic boost.”

The first troops at what would become Fort Logan arrived from Kansas in October 1887. Named for Civil War general Alexander Logan, the fort soon began taking in soldiers from around the West.

Col. Merriam, who would be the fort’s longest-serving commander, arrived with troops from Wyoming’s Fort Laramie in 1889, Ballard said.

Fort Logan’s soldiers soon found themselves part of history. In 1890, Merriam and six companies deployed by train

to South Dakota, where they joined hundreds of troops encircling fleeing Lakota after soldiers killed Chief Sitting Bull, Ballard said.

Merriam’s troops were nearby on Dec. 29, 1890, when American troops massacred upward of 300 Lakota men, women and children at Wounded Knee, though Ballard said Fort Logan troops did not take part in the killing.

Fort Logan’s troops served as strikebreakers during several labor conflict in the 1890s, including during the nationwide Pullman railroad strike of 1894, according to historian Almont Lindsey. Troops from the fort traveled to Trinidad in

southern Colorado, where they protected deputy marshals as they arrested dozens of union leaders. They would be put to use amid other labor strife in northern New Mexico.

The fort also became home to a piece of high-tech equipment in the 1890s: an aerial observation balloon, manned by daredevil aerialist and tightrope walker Ivy Baldwin.

Baldwin and the balloon — dubbed the General Myer — deployed with troops from the fort to Santiago, Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898, though the balloon was soon shot down by Spanish artillery.

“By the time of the First World War, the countryside was starting to fill in, and there wasn’t enough room to maneuver,” Ballard said, but the fort proved invaluable as the country mobilized for the war.

Thousands of recruits and draftees mustered at Fort Logan, filling rows of tents stretching across the grounds before heading out to coastal military bases to be shipped overseas.

New Deal-era work programs shored up and expanded Fort Logan’s facilities during the period between the World Wars, Ballard said, before reaching a new fever pitch as American involvement in World War II loomed.

Citizens rally at Capitol for gun rights Rally for Our Rights urges people to push back against ‘red flag’ law

Dennis Gatchalian has lived in the Unites States since 1984, the year he left his home in the Philippines. He’s resided in Denver for 35 years.

On May 18, he stood in front of the state Capitol listening to speakers at the pro-gun event, Rally for Our Rights, which drew more than 100 people. His experiences growing up under a regime that instated martial law in the 1970s, and watching his brother arrested, jailed and sentenced to hard labor for possessing a leaflet, brought him to the steps of the Capitol that day.

“I know what oppression is and I can see the parallels here,” he said.

Throughout the day, a common theme emerged. Gun rights proponents believe the right to bear arms protects all other rights, and they worry issues including Colorado’s

JESSICA GIBBS red flag law are one more step toward their biggest fear — a total disarming of the public.

Gatchalian was one of several attendees who spoke with Colorado Community Media or held signs stating their fear the nation is on a path toward

disarming citizens.

The rally opened with a speech from Robert Wareham, the attorney leading recall efforts against Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock. Wareham maintained Colorado’s new red flag law is unconstitu-

tional and gun grab legislation.

“This is going to be abused,” he said from the podium.

Wareham spoke to a crowd that booed Spurlock’s name and cheered at the mention of recalling him. Spurlock had violated their trust, they believed, by backing the law.

Booths offered information on recall efforts against Spurlock and Gov. Jared Polis.

Judith Cody drove from her home in Colorado Springs to participate. Cody feels pro-gun citizens have compromised with gun control advocates on numerous issues, naming bump stock bans as one example, but that further gun restrictions like the red flag law, also called an Extreme Risk Protection Order, keep coming.

“We give and we give but it’s not enough,” she said.

Cody attended with her 20-year-old son, Thomas, who also dislikes ERPO and called it “the most relevant issue right now” in Colorado related to gun debates.

“I’m concerned that it takes due process out of the equation,” he said. “It puts you in a he said, she said situation.”

Thomas said his interest in guns is first because owning them is a constitutional

right, second because they provide a method of selfdefense and lastly because he enjoys sports shooting.

Throughout the day, Tony Genella of Centennial held a sign on one side reading “97.8% of mass shootings are in gun-free zones.” He’d like for teachers to carry weapons on school grounds if they want to and if they have undergone conceal carry classes.

“I strictly oppose gun-free zones,” he said. “I believe that our schools are the most vulnerable areas.”

The event took place 11 days after Colorado’s most recent school shooting, which left an 18-year-old senior at STEM School Highland Ranch, Kendrick Castillo, dead and eight others injured.

Speakers at the event urged citizens to support recalls of Spurlock, Polis and state Rep. Tom Sullivan and to push back against gun control measures like the red flag bill.

Cody listened, and like Gatchalian, worried the government would succeed a disarming people completely if people don’t protest.

“I know people say, `Oh, it never will,’” she said. “They’re trying.”

recommend it.

What I do for fun …

I love to indoor skydive, but when I am not training I am a true Colorado kid — dirt bike, downhill ski, mountain bike, hike, camp with my family and play on my trampoline. I have been working on teaching my dog Ernie new tricks. He just learned to roll over!

The best part about spring is …

Getting to go outside and play in the rain. It also means school is winding down. This year I was homeschooled and just finished so I am officially on summer break.

People I look up to I look up to my mom and dad because they are strong, smart and awesome people. They have supported me so much and helped me make my dreams come true.

“Having dozens of acres with mature trees and big grassy areas is a calming, healing environment for our patients that you might not easily find elsewhere in the Denver suburbs,” Polunas said. “It’s quiet and spread out in a way few other facilities are.”

The hospital currently has 94 beds

for persistently mentally ill patients, Polunas said, down from about 400 beds when the facility opened — part of a nationwide effort toward moving mentally ill patients out of inpatient facilities.

Many of the buildings on Officers’ Row are used by an addiction treatment program run by the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Polunas said, and staff and patients alike take pride in the campus’s legacy.

“We’re stewards of that history,” Polunas said.

The hospital itself has its own significant history, Polunas said, as a forerunner in what were in the 1960s new concepts in mental health treatment, focused on quality of life.

“It was a response to the dungeonlike atmosphere of earlier institutions,” Polunas said. “We have a deep respect for the history of this place, and are proud to shepherd it into the future.”

“Staff would be the first responders,” Overbeck said. “I challenge the board to overcome hatred and distrust of firearms.”

Superintendent Thomas Tucker thanked community members for expressing concerns and sharing suggestions. Neither he nor school board members offered specifics on school security moving forward.

“Tonight has been a good night for us in which we haven’t engaged in fingerpointing,” Tucker said. “We need to fix and improve security at every last one of our schools.”

District 4, won with 58 percent of the votes. He beat challenger Michael Hays. District 4 includes portions of Castle Rock, Franktown and The Pinery.

Robert “Bob” Graf retained his seat in District 6 with 74 percent of votes, defeating Jason Altshuler. District 6 includes portions of Aurora, Bennet, Strasburg, Byers and Deer Trail.

Darcelia Beck Parker A misleading column Regarding Craig Smith’s column where he asserts that the Second Amendment is untouchable, I suggest a road trip. Perhaps he could drive to places like California, New York, New Jersey, or Washington D.C. with an unloaded .38 revolver on his front seat. Just for fun be sure to get pulled over. As the D.C. cop is putting on the cuffs, Smith can protest that the Second Amendment is untouchable. He’d be charged with a felony.

There are federal, state and local gun laws all across the nation.

Maybe Smith could do a column enlightening us on which other constitutional rights have so many restrictive laws. Untouchable, really?

Smith says we must talk about gun wrongs, not just rights. He then cites a billboard that claims 1.4 million gun deaths from 1970 to present. As is typical, only the wrong is presented. He must be unaware of a Centers for Disease Control study done after the 2012 Sandy Hook tragedy. CDC found that almost all national surveys estimate private citizen defensive uses of firearms range from 500,000 to over 3 million per year. Given the change in

population since 1970, let’s take the low of 500,000 and divide it by two, yielding 250,000. The 48 (1970 to 2018) years times 250,000 would show an estimate of 12 million defensive uses protecting persons and property.

Further, FBI data show that about 40% to 45% of firearms deaths are suicides. Suicide is logically the ultimate “it’s my body, it’s my choice”.

We all want the mentally ill and criminals controlled. We all mourn the horrific violence, but only focusing on one side of the debate is not helpful Mr. Smith.

G. Arthur Bentzen Castle Rock Time for more on mental health I noted with interest in the May 9 edition that five of the CCM journalists won awards for their reporting on the state of mental health in Douglas County.

Just before the paper came out, there was the STEM shooting followed by the students walking out of a vigil and chanting “mental health.” I have now seen several reports from school superintendents all saying the same thing: They need more mental health programs and resources for their students.

May I suggest that the five reporters focus on a new series: the state of mental health programs in Colorado schools, or the lack thereof, and what must be done to “fix” this very obvious problem.

Gary Koldyke Highlands Ranch Polluted site a disgrace I have lived on the Vista Trail open space for 21 years. I frequently walk this trail from my house to the Cheese Ranch just east of Quebec.

This trail passes Platte River Academy and Cresthill Middle school and is used by hundreds of adult recreation users, Academy, Cresthill and Highlands Ranch High School students each week.

I don’t see much pollution on Vista Trail and was shocked when a picture of a massive polluted site was published in the paper on May 2. This was adult pollution on a grand scale.

This was adult pollution that could be fatal to anyone within a mile of the polluted site. This is an unregulated outlaw shooting area in western Douglas County.

I have owned guns for over 70 years and have some trophies on my walls that most hunters would die for. I believe there is no such person as a responsible gun owner who does not have a hunting license or a gun club membership in their pocket. Why? Because we are regulated and all other gun owners are not.

I don’t have too many election cycles left in my life, but I am going to be opposing any elected county officials who do not have the welfare of every Douglas County resident first and foremost on their agenda.

Rocky Vista students train in realistic simulations Military medicine program travels to California facility

The Cut Suit is a humanworn body suit that simulates realistic trauma. As part of Strategic Operations Inc.’s Intensive Surgical and Trauma Skills Course, the simulations were designed to completely immerse participants in battlefield conditions and emergency situations to hone their skills in a controlled environment.

Students in the military medicine program at Rocky Vista University’s college of osteopathic medicine participated in a hands-on learning simulation alongside first responders during Cut Suit Week, a healthcare simulation event hosted by Strategic Operations Inc. The students were joined by students from Touro University in Nevada, A.T. Still University of Health Sciences, and Western University of Health Sciences for the simulations, which took place April 28 to May 4 at the Stu Segall Productions facility in San Diego.

After brushing up on their surgical skills at workshops throughout the week, students participated in realistic scenarios that included an active shooter, explosions, a domestic violence incident, and various surgical simulations.

During the scenarios, they rushed to treat people representing patients suffering from life-threatening injuries, and performed a wide range of medical procedures including chest tube thoracotomies, deep wound packing, combat tourniquet application, intraosseous infusions, and

The back-to-back scenarios also highlighted the unique aspect of emergency medicine for physicians serving in the military: triaging the wounded and providing critical care en route to a surgical facility.

The students experienced an active

scene from the perspective of law enforcement, which included how they treat at a scene before the victim makes it to the emergency room or operating room. For those students who volunteered to be standardized patients, they also experienced firsthand how trauma can affect patients before they have received medical treatment.

Track and field is a popular and successful sport at Lutheran High school.

The Lions won both the girls and boys Class 3A state titles at the CHSAA State Track Championships

which were held May 16-18 at Jeffco Stadium.

“For a school of 500, we have 130 kids on our team,” said Lions coach Darwin Horan. “That’s pretty amazing. They have a good time.”

Lutheran’s girls, the state runnerup last season, outlasted Colorado Academy to win the championships with 109 points compared to 106 for the Mustangs. It was the first state title for the girls.

The boys team amassed 91.50 points to win the 3A championship, with Denver West grabbing the secondplace trophy with 65 points.

It was the fifth state title in the past six years for the boys program and the sixth overall.

“It was amazing,” said Horan. “We did it with a bunch of hard-working kids. We didn’t have any superstars.

We just had to grind it out events at a time. It was pretty special.

“All the event coaches are so passion. The kids like them and we spend a lot of time with the kids.

They seem to love it.”

herry Creek baseball coach Marc Johnson has had an impact on many of his players and he learned recently of the power of social media.

Johnson’s baseball team beat Arapahoe 12-2 on May 13 to give the 74-year-old coach his 800th career victory in his 47th season as the Bruins’ head baseball coach.

“My phone has been bombarded with phone calls OVERTIME and text messages from players from the past,” said Johnson.

“I got a cool one from Josh Bard, the bench coach for the Yankees, and I got a one from Darnell McDonald who Jim Benton is an Arizona League coach with the Cubs, and from lots of guys who played with me in the past.”

Johnson, who also coached the Creek boys soccer for 28 years and guided the Bruins to five state title and three runner-up finishes, took an 800-200 record into the regional playoffs on May 18.

Cherry Creek has won or shared 32 league baseball championships, won eight state crowns and been in the state title game 13 times. Creek’s only losing season under Johnson’s tutelage was in 1972, his first year as coach.

“I know I’m not really up on social media and I was just floored that it got out everywhere so fast,” he said of the news about the 800-win milestone. “I got congratulatory calls from France, Italy and Afghanistan. I got a call from a former student who lives in Paris, Bobby Corso who played for me and he’s in Afghanistan, and my son happened to be in Italy on a trip. I got calls from two or three college coaches that I’ve been close to over the years.

“I had a coach that just won the state championship in Utah and he texted me, and he said something like, `It would take me 110 years to get that many wins.’”

Johnson’s 800 wins are second to former Eaton coach Jim Danley who recorded 807 victories and is the winningest baseball high school coach in Colorado.

Johnson, Danley and Denver Christian basketball coach Dick Katte are the only coaches with over 800 wins at the same school.

“On a personal basis I’m very proud of it (800 wins) and very proud of the consistency,” added Johnson. “A lot of the recognition goes to the kids that played here, their parents, the coaching staff and even the girls that managed. I am more proud of what d the kids that played here have went on to do. It’s a chance to make an impact on kids. This is a personal thing and I’m proud of it, but I want the kids to get the best out of the experience as they possibly can.”

Johnson points to a few wins as being most memorable.

“Obviously all of the state title wins stand out,” he said. “In ‘95 and ‘96 when my son played (Tyler), that was a big thing on a personal basis that I will never forget — 1995 and 96 started a five-year run where we won state championships.

“Those teams were so loaded it was

unbelievable. In ‘98 and ‘99 we didn’t have near that talent, they were just so used to winning that everybody expected it. That was special because it made you feel like you really coached.”

Johnson wants to coach at least a couple more seasons.

“One of the things Josh Bard said to me, which was a real nice compliment, and he said, `Thank you for investing in my life.’ I told him that means the world to me. You have a chance to impact. I’ve always said when I feel that I can’t relate and I’m not enjoying it, then that’s the time to quit.

“Eight hundred wins really means two things. It means I’m old and also means I’ve weathered the storms and coached for 47 years at the same school which is pretty rare. When I go to national conventions, people always bring that up, they say: `At the same school?’”

He has been the Falcons’ offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, where his son, junior-to-be Jake Rubley, has been the quarterback.

T.J. Rubley — who saw action in 10 games during a five-season career as an NFL quarterback in the 1990s — hopes to bring some stability to the program that has had four head coaches in the past three seasons.

Mark Robinson started the 2017 season as head coach but resigned before the first game following an incident during a routine drug sweep. He was replaced by interim David May. John Trahan was hired and was the coach last season but Trahan is under investigation for fraud allegations and is on leave. Rubley was asked to take over the program.

“I am not sure what `interim’ means in this situation, but I love working with our kids and watching them work their tails off,” said Rubley, who was the quarterbacks coach at Mountain Vista where his

older sons Ryan and Brock played for the Golden Eagles. “They have been awesome through some of the happenings and continue to get better. I am really excited to continue to help them on their journeys.”

Hall of Famer Colorado High School Activities Association Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green will be inducted into the University of Nebraska Hall of Fame on Aug. 30.

Blanford-Green, a 1981 Aurora Central graduate, was an 18-time Big Eight track champion and eight-time All-American while competing for the Huskers from 1982 to 1985. She was an executive director of the Nebraska School Activities Association for three years.

FP B1 Dam was originally built in 1963 for the primary authorized purpose of flood prevention and to protect property within the FranktownParker and Cherry Creek Watershed project area from floodwater, sediment, and erosion damage. The Hazard Classification of Dam FP B1 was raised from low to high hazard by the Colorado Division of Water Resources, Dam Safety Branch in a letter dated December 2, 2016. The dam is also classified as high hazard by the NRCS. Due to this, the dam does not meet current Colorado or NRCS dam performance and safety standards. The purpose is to perform maintenance rehabilitation for Dam FP B1 to meet current NRCS and Colorado Dam Safety and engineering standards and maintain the present level of flood control benefits.
