Decorative rocks spread joy to neighbors Parker residents connect through painted messages

The Parker “Rocks” Facebook group began in 2017 with the purpose to connect the community and spread joy in small doses to their neighbors.

“The group was created simply to spread the love and so people could post rocks they hide/find,” said Jennifer DeJesus, one of two admins of the page. “The kids and adults love to do this. And it brings smiles to the faces of those that hide the rocks and those that find them. Just spreading love and kindness when there’s so much hate in this world.”

The long stay-at-home stretch has given new life to the movement. Kids — and adults — from the South Pinery to Bradbury Hills and Cottonwood neighborhoods are leaving their own decorative rocks along local trails.

The rocks vary in size. Some say “Stay Smilin,’” “You Are Beautiful” and other positive messages. Others have more artful designs and a few camofluage like a flower, hidden in plain sight at first glance.

The rocks are on trails and in driveways, perched on mailboxes and signs, nuzzled under a tree. They are well-known to the neighbors. On a walk along the East-West Trail in the Bradbury Hills neighborhood May 16, every single one of the dozen or so people out on the trail could trace sightings in all corners of the neighborhood.

“What started out as a fun way for my boys and I to bring smiles to friends and neighbors while also social distancing, this group has brought so much joy when there’s so much negativity out there,” wrote Summer Crosbie, of Parker, on Facebook. “Seeing what designs people are into at the moment or what cool rocks others are finding is just so fun. It’s a cheap and easy craft that the entire family can be part of !”

Douglas County Libraries offers curbside services Patrons can pick up holds at all branches; book drops reopen STAFF REPORT

While all Douglas County Libraries branches remain closed to walk-in traffic, patrons can now get their holds with the district’s Park and Pick-Up curbside service.

Park and Pick-Up is available from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. At the Louviers branch, pick-up hours are 3-7 p.m. Tuesday.

To use Park and Pick-Up, look for the flag denoting parking spaces set aside for the service at each branch. If all marked spots are full, customers should wait in their car for a space to become available. Once parked in a numbered space, call or text the number on the sign with the required information.

Health regulations prevent Douglas County

Library patrons will have to open and close their own trunks when staff members deliver their library materials. Staff members are not allowed to touch a customer’s car.

Jail protocol pushes back against COVID-19 Each new inmate is given a mask, screened; fewer being booked

Capt. Darren Weekly with the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office has had some sleepless nights since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

As the man charged with overseeing the Douglas County jail, he’s in charge of the health and safety of every inmate there. With social distancing being one of the biggest ways to prevent the spread of the potentially deadly virus, he and his team have been faced with a unusual challenge.

“We’re doing everything we can inside the facility that people outside the facility are doing,” Weekly said.

That means separating inmates so they each have their own cell, increasing cleaning measures, passing out masks and gloves and reminding inmates to distance themselves

They’ve also stopped allowing anyone other than staff to come to and from the building. Work-release programs are frozen, attorneys meet with clients over the phone and no visitors are allowed in person.

They’re able to spread out the inmates because of extra capacity in the jail, Weekly said. When the pandemic began, law enforcement and the jail worked together to keep the population low by no longer booking people into jail over low-level arrests for victimless crimes and small

misdemeanors.

“Every time we have a new intake, we run the risk of exposing our facility to the virus,” Weekly said.

That’s why each new inmate is given a mask, screened for COVID-19 symptoms and then spends 14 days in quarantine before joining the rest of the facility. Staff is also screened for symptoms at the beginning of their 10-hour shifts.

“It is very stressful ... I worry about them constantly,” Weekly said of inmates and staff. “I want to make sure I do everything I can to keep them safe and keep them healthy.”

Even with all these measures in place, the highly contagious virus has still made its way into the facility.

It started with one inmate who wasn’t feeling well and eventually, 10 inmates and four staff members tested positive. On April 28, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment determined the jail had an outbreak.

“I don’t know how it got in here,” Weekly said. “I wish I did.”

All who tested positive have since recovered and now, the jail is reporting zero cases.

“In large part, we avoided

a major spread by quarantining, isolating, providing PPE and frequent cleaning,” Weekly said.

Some of these measures can be difficult on the mental health of the inmates, as many communal activities have been halted.

“Some are taking it better than others, it just varies,” Weekly said. “We try to be transparent about why we’re doing what we’re doing.”

While things are looking up for now, Weekly isn’t sure he will be able to maintain the zero-case status.

“I don’t know how much longer I can hold off as the courts open back up again,” he said. “We’ve already gotten close to not being able to do single cells for inmates.”

As of May 13, the jail had 72 unoccupied cells available for inmates. Weekly noted that number could easily fluctuate by 20 people on any given day.

“We are by no means out of the woods yet. I anticipate there will be another case,” he said. “Just because we don’t have any cases right now, you can’t let your guard down. Someone could unknowingly have it.”

Parker mayor to Polis: Restaurants, gyms should be fully open Waid writes to governor requesting expedited reopening process

Parker Mayor Mike Waid sent a letter to Gov. Jared Polis May 18, requesting an expedited process allowing all business to reopen.

Waid signed the letter on behalf of the Town of Parker and the town council, stating he believes it is “economically viable and operationally stable” to allow all restaurants and gyms to open with safety protocols in place.

“Likewise, responsible citizens can and should be allowed to self-determine their level of comfort for reengaging our business community. The freedom for a citizen to patronize an establishment based on that business’s safety protocols and how they align with that citizen’s beliefs should be paramount,” Waid wrote.

“To put it simply, if a person does not feel safe at a certain business then they should not go there. This respects the business’s right to operate at a safety level they are comfortable with as well as the citizen’s choice to

Waid closed the letter stating it is important for leaders to follow factual data and to alleviate fears by providing statistics and facts without political bias.

“The data which is now available shows the current level of response is no longer necessary and a return to society should not be feared,” Waid wrote.

Four student doctors and one graduate of Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Parker were recognized with scholarships and an award by the Denver Osteopathic Foundation.

Every year, the foundation raises scholarship money for students committed to osteopathic medicine. This year, Andrew Black, OMS II; Emily Gudvangen-Sherwood, OMS II; Jessica McArthur, OMS II; and Tess Schultz, OMS II, were awarded scholarships.

Each student shared his or her future goals as osteopathic physicians in profiles by the foundation. Upon graduating, Black plans on providing services to patients in rural areas, while McArthur is committed to serving underserved communities in Denver.

Douglas County pushes to reopen restaurants Commissioner: County ‘is ready to move to the next stage’

Perched on a hilltop at the southern edge of the Denver metro area, Lone Tree restaurant Sierra boasts vistas of the city, swanky dining rooms, large outdoor patios, and enough seating for up to 350 guests.

But on May 18, towers of chairs sat stacked up, tables lay bare and the building stood empty except for a handful of masked employees cooking takeout and delivery orders.

Sierra’s sales have been ringing in at roughly 10% of its usual business amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which has kept Colorado restaurants closed to dine-in service for roughly two months.

Sierra’s co-founder and owner Mark Brinkerhoff said restaurants, which already operate on tight margins, can’t sustain that for much longer.

Many operations, Sierra included, were not designed for the dine-out model, he said.

“Most of us are probably operating at a loss,” he said.

He hopes things will change this month.

Douglas County is fighting to get

Sierra typically employs 100 people but during the pandemic has kept 10 to 15 people working in staggered shifts. On May 18, masked workers cooked up takeout and delivery orders.

ing in shift at present but could bring back 50 if the variance is approved, Brinkerhoff said. The restaurant typically employs 100 people.

If approved, county restaurants could transition to dine-in services as early as May 22, so long as they follow a slew of social distancing and public health guidelines. “(May 22 is) the beginning of summer. That’s a three-day weekend,” Commissioner Lora Thomas said. “I think it would make a lot of sense for our citizens, for them to finally get freedom at the beginning of summer.”

‘County is ready to move’ Commissioners said that in light of Douglas County’s low case and death rate, they are confident Douglas County can safely reopen restaurants now. The variance would also open gyms and houses of worship under stringent public health measures.

The first step to applying for a variance is forming a suppression plan, Commissioner Roger Partridge said.

The plans assess the state of the virus in a community and outline its capacity for responding to the pandemic.

Douglas County’s suppression plan notes that as of May 15, there were 632 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the county, according to state health department data. That’s nearly 3% of cases statewide and .17% of the county’s population.

There are at least 39 deaths related to COVID-19 in Douglas County, according to the Tri-County Health Department.

The county’s five hospitals submitted letters in support of the variance, stating they had capacity to handle a spike in COVID-19 cases should that occur. Stricter public health measures can be reinstated if the Tri-County Health Department finds the variance is not sufficiently containing COVID-19.

If a business has an outbreak, the health department can close the business temporarily if it traces the outbreak to that operation.

Brinkerhoff said he is confident restaurants in Douglas County can safely reopen if they abide by the public health guidelines in the variance, and time is of the essence, he said.

He pointed to an April survey by the Colorado Restaurant Association that found three out of four restaurant employees in Colorado have lost their jobs and 50% of the state’s restaurants are currently closed.

He was most struck by the survey’s finding that, if restaurants don’t reopen in May, more than 20% will permanently close.

Commissioner Abe Laydon said he has worked with the Brinkerhoff family for roughly two weeks, as the Brinkerhoffs represent a working group of more than 70 local restaurants. Laydon’s goal was to get feedback on what restaurants needs to safely reopen and reignite a sustainable business model.

The county’s suppression plan acknowledges that, in requesting the variance, the county is relying on the public to be responsible amid the pandemic. It suggests high-risk and older individuals should continue living under stay-at-home guidelines.

People who are sick should stay away from the public. Anyone displaying COVID-19 symptoms should isolate.

There’s no guarantee the variance will be approved, or if so, when. The Denver Post reported nearly half of the state’s 64 counties requested to ease safer-at-home restrictions but only five had received approvals by mid-May. House Minority Leader Patrick Neville, a Republican from Castle Rock, criticized Gov. Jared Polis for long wait times on variance applications and has openly supported restaurants that defied public health orders and reopened to dine-in service.

Commissioner Thomas also said May 18 she grew concerned when the governor announced that day, he would soon release guidelines for when restaurants reopen, but a decision on when they can reopen was not expected for several days.

A spokesman for the governor’s office deferred to the Colorado Department of Public Health when asked for comment. A spokeswoman for the CDPHE said the timeline to review and approve variances depends on the complexity of the requests and reiterated the governor would release more guidelines for restaurants in the coming week.

“I just really hope he will look at the data and understand that Douglas County is ready to move to the next stage,” Thomas said.

Defying orders, legal battles Douglas County’s variance request comes amid mounting pressure from some Coloradans to reopen the state economy now. A protest swarmed the Capitol steps on May 17 as people from across the state called for Colorado to reopen.

The county also found itself at the center of controversy this month when a Castle Rock restaurant opened to dine-in service, defying state orders.

The restaurant, C&C Coffee and Kitchen, garnered national attention on May 10 by offering in-person dining to large Mother’s Day crowds.

Few people work masks and patrons packed the shop.

The restaurant was ordered to close by the Tri-County Health Department and the state later suspended its business license indefinitely.

C&C is gearing up for legal battles challenging the state’s shutdowns with other area restaurants that opened despite public health orders.

C&C’s attorney Randy Corporon is also representing Centennial restaurant Waters Edge Winery and Bistro, which closed briefly after the Tri-County Health Department issued it warnings for reopening to dine-in service earlier this month.

Corporon represents Shooters Grill as well, a Rifle eatery that also made headlines for reopening to dine-in service this month.

Corporon has consulted numerous restaurants, he said, including Tonti’s Pizza in Parker, another area restaurant that received stern warnings from Tri-County Health Department when it opened to dine-in service.

As a member of the restaurant industry, Brinkerhoff was disappointed to see photos of the reopenings showed people at the restaurants did not follow social distancing, such as wearing masks or staying six feet apart. That behavior does not help efforts to reopen, he said.

Still, Brinkerhoff said he can’t judge the businesses for reopening without knowing details of their financial situation.

Whether reopening was good or bad, he said, he believes it sparked a conversation about stresses on the restaurant industry, put pressure on the government to help out more and created a sense of urgency around the issue.

C&C co-owner Jesse Arellano said his restaurant put up signs telling people if they were uncomfortable, they could leave. He also said the restaurant separated chairs and told staff they could wear masks if they wanted, although many removed them as the kitchen grew hot.

“Everyone that was there chose to be there, wanted to be there,” he said.

“People were so happy to be out and live life normal.”

Arellano also said the county’s variance request is coming too late, and that the board should have pushed for lighter restrictions one month after the initial shutdowns.

The variance allows restaurants to reopen with 75 customers or 50% capacity, whichever is fewer. Arellano believes many restaurants will still be forced to permanently close under that guidance and would prefer the variance allow 75% capacity in dining areas.

“I think that restaurants have really been treated unfairly in this whole deal,” he said of the pandemic response.

‘Businesses are on life support’ Although Neville said some restaurants have no alternative to defying public health orders, aside from declaring bankruptcy, not all elected and public health leaders had the same response.

Polis, the Tri-County Health Department and the CDPHE all rebuked the move and said it could endanger lives.

Douglas County commissioners also condemned defying public health orders. Thomas said the governor’s reaction to C&C — pulling the license — sent a strong message.

“We were telling people who were contacting us, please do not encourage other restaurants to open illegally because we do not want to be made an example of here in Douglas County,” she said.

The county began preparing for a variance request as soon as it read the safer-at-home order, she said. Laydon said the board’s priority is reopening businesses safely, quickly but also legally.

“We believe that the legal process is important and that working with our partners to advance the ball is crucial,” Laydon said. “But we understand these businesses are on life support right now and they are frustrated and really need the opportunity to reopen.”

Legislative leader defends defiant Castle Rock eatery Shut-down C&C restaurant, health officials weigh legal options

A masked Colorado House Minority Leader Patrick Neville walked up to the front of Castle Rock restaurant C&C Coffee and Kitchen on Tuesday, May 12, and taped a $20 bill to the business’s window.

His cash donation was one of dozens tacked to the glass storefront with blue painter’s tape that day. Some bills were inscribed with messages to the owners, Jesse and April Arellano.

“Thank you for fighting back,” read one.

“Don’t let the bastards win,” read another.

Around the corner, Neville, RCastle Rock, found the Arellanos on the restaurant’s outdoor patio with a group of C&C supporters grilling up free food for anyone stopping by.

People trickled in and out of the cookout and the group approached 20 people at times. Some wore masks or face coverings, but many did not.

While the informal barbecue spanned the afternoon, the restaurant was officially closed that day, rounding off a turbulent start to the week after it reopened to dine-in

At present, Colorado allows restaurants to perform takeout, delivery and curbside pickup but prohibits dine-in amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

C&C’s reopening drew national attention and sparked a fierce debate over when Colorado should reopen amid the public health crisis.

Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment suspended its business license indefinitely on May 12.

“While the residents and businesses of Colorado made tremendous sacrifices through physical distancing in order to flatten the curve, we are still not out of the woods. The virus will continue to take the lives of our families, neighbors and friends if we don’t act responsibly,” CDPHE Executive Director Jill Hunsaker Ryan said in a May 12 statement.

Ryan called C&C’s actions “irresponsible behavior” that could “defeat the progress made during the Stay-at-Home order.”

A Tri-County Health Department spokeswoman provided a statement saying the department was in conversations with CDPHE about “the most effective path forward.”

“We are prepared to move forward with further legal action tomorrow if the facility remains out of compliance,” the statement said. “Our goal is for the restaurant to stop violating the public health order and creating a risk of possible transmission of COVID-19.”

Neville arrived wearing a mask and removed it later when speaking with guests at the cafe. The state representative came to support C&C and said restaurants should be allowed to reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic with certain guidelines, similar to how retailers like Walmart have been allowed to.

“I think originally we were trying to flatten the curve. I think we’ve done that,” Neville said.

When asked if reopening posed a threat to people’s physical health or furthering the virus’s spread, Neville said Colorado had curbed COVID-19 enough to warrant reopening businesses and had prevented overwhelming the state’s health care system.

Neville said that “it’s up to each individual business” when asked if opening in defiance of state and public health orders was the right or wrong move.

The Arellanos, who were interviewed earlier by Colorado Community Media, declined interview requests May 12. The couple’s attorney, Randy

Corporon, said he and his clients are still exploring legal options but might initiate a lawsuit against Gov. Jared Polis claiming damages and violations of constitutional rights.

He did not know if the CDPHE or the Tri-County Health Department would also be named in any lawsuits.

Corporon doubts the business can reopen in Castle Rock once the pandemic subsides. He believed COVID-19 pushed C&C Coffee and Kitchen’s Castle Rock location to the brink of bankruptcy. Revoking the business license forced C&C’s Colorado Springs location to close as well.

Corporon believed both locations were paying off debts and in a viable financial position before the pandemic. The restaurant had received a $5,000 grant from a program the Town of Castle Rock is running during the pandemic, according to media reports. A GoFundMe for the restaurant — organized by a person identified as Steve Gilbertson of Larkspur — had raised nearly $30,000 as of early afternoon on May 15.

Neville said he does not believe C&C or businesses in similar financial positions had any choice in disobeying the shutdowns, and he could see it sparking a trend.

“I think you’re going to see more and more of that because their option is to file for bankruptcy right now,” Neville said.

Neville suggested using funds from the federal CARES Act to reimburse business owners for business personal property taxes. He called it “disturbing” that businesses are forced to close under a government mandate but still required to pay those taxes.

“At the very least, we shouldn’t be taxing them if we’re forcing them to close,” he said.

The longer Colorado takes to reopen, he said, the greater the state deficit will grow.

Neville condemned Tri-County for ordering C&C to close and the state’s revoking of C&C’s license. He believes Douglas County should sever ties with Tri-County, he said, echoing a call he and other Republican legislators made earlier in the pandemic.

“I think there’s a lot of issues with Tri-County. I think first off, any health department shouldn’t have the extreme authority to issue shutdowns like they did on the 25th without any sort of elected-official approval,” Neville said. “I see that there is a need for that for a brief amount of time, but we are now at almost two months and that’s probably too long.”

Neville said both health department orders and a governor’s executive orders should eventually be put to a vote of the Legislature — possibly 15 or 30 days after they are issued — to provide more checks and balances in the system.

“It should really be a vote of someone who is elected because they are accountable,” Neville said. “I’m elected. I’ll be accountable for taping a $20 there. I’m sure there’s people going to be angry at me for that, but I’ll be glad to stand up in front of the voters and explain my decision.”

Activity book for students to focus on financial literacy STAFF REPORT

Economic Literacy Colorado has partnered with Bellco Credit Union to create an activity book for elementary students so they can further the conversation about financial literacy with their parents and family members.

National Financial Literacy Month was recognized in April to focus on

the importance of financial literacy and to teach Americans and children how to establish and maintain healthy budgets.

The booklet, titled “FUNancial $marts,” is available online, and it will also be distributed through Bellco Credit Union locations and though its community partners. The book’s collaborative lessons of counting money, budgeting and creating a

business are intended to encourage Colorado youths to go down the right path to making educated financial choices.

Resilient and Ready are apt adjectives

arch, April, and May found us in the midst of remote learning in the Douglas County School District.

During this unprecedented time, our GUEST teachers, students COLUMN and parents adapted to this new way of life. It truly takes all of us working together for the betterment of our students.

We also faced a number of challenges. Our students missed their friends Thomas Tucker and teachers. Our teachers missed their students and school community. Some of our youngest learners, who are healthy and well, struggled to understand why they couldn’t play with their friends.

Our children missed birthday parties and sports seasons. In-person ceremonies celebrating the transition from elementary school to middle school were canceled. Big life moments — like

s many of you know, I was the former president of the Zig Ziglar Organization. And many of the life lessons I learned from Mr. Ziglar WINNING show up in my WORDS writings and in my trainings and keynotes. Several of his quotes have found their way into this column over the past 10-plus years too.

Today, I thought I would give you a little more of the Michael Norton background, and why this column always includes a little hope and encouragement.

worked for this moment for 13 years and deserve to be celebrated. I’ve been so impressed with the positivity and maturity many of our seniors are displaying in light of the cards they have been dealt related to this pandemic.

Living through this unusual time and coming out on the other side proves they are Resilient.

I am also confident that our Class of 2020 is Ready for the next chapter. They may be headed to college, the military or the workforce. Each of our seniors has worked hard over the past 13 years to reach this point, and each has experienced many milestones along the way, culminating in the senior year of high school. I know our seniors are experiencing a range of emotions such as anger, disappointment, sadness and even fear. I feel these emotions with our seniors. Despite this, I know that the pandemic does not define the Class of 2020. The impact, experiences, and memories of the past 13 years cannot be erased. So I ask our Class of 2020 to please keep their heads up. They have so much to look forward to and I wish each of our graduates nothing but suc-

getting your learner’s permit to drive — were put on hold. Some of our high schoolers missed out on their prom.

These are milestone moments and it’s not easy to miss out on any of these. Our Class of 2020 has certainly been put to the test. Graduations were postponed and we await guidance from health experts, the Colorado Department of Education, and Gov. Jared Polis on whether in-person graduation ceremonies will be possible this summer. In the meantime, we continue to explore ways we can host commencement ceremonies that balance celebrating our graduates, while keeping our students and community members safe. There are two words that come to mind when I think of our current situation — and how our students, staff, parents, and community have responded to this unprecedented time: Resilient and Ready.

Although everything looks a bit different this year, it is a time of celebration and reflection. All of our DCSD students have shown that they are Resilient and Ready. This is especially true for our Class of 2020. They

The past few months have proven that the Douglas County School District community is also Resilient and Ready.

I know that together, if we continue with the positivity and grace our students, parents and staff have shown over the past couple of months, we will come out of this challenging time in our lives stronger than ever — and more connected as the Douglas County School District family.

The English language has taken quite a beating in recent years. Scholars attribute it to many things. For example: tweets, texts, emails and lazy-mindedness.

Further, correct English is not cool.

“Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints?” is cool but “Who has the temerity to believe they can best the New Orleans Saints?” is not.

It’s necessary to point out that I am not an expert. John McWhorter is. He could tell you why Nick Charles (“The Thin Man”) spoke of rounding up “susPECTS” in 1934 and why Captain Louie Renault (“Casablanca”) spoke of rounding up “SUS-pects” in 1942.

I have read it in his books, heard it on his audio programs and podcasts. This quote has been my north star, my compass, and the guiding principle that helps me in my decision-making.

Next to him, I am a yahoo. But I try, and I love language, even when it is corrupted now and then.

However, there are some words and phrases that drive me to distraction.

I am providing my own list of 10, to get the ball rolling.

1. Like. When used extragrammatically, it is the most noxious and pervasive word in the English language. Tracing its origin has been as difficult as tracing this little virus that has been going around. It is at least four decades old. Some think it started in the San Fernando Valley.

It was once associated with young people. But those young people have

Guidance: “Duty makes us do things well, but love makes us do them beautifully.”

Happiness: “The chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what we want most for what we want now.”

Hope: “The door to a balanced success opens widest on the hinges of hope and encouragement.”

I shared nine with you here, there are 95 more that have directly contributed to my success. Zig’s body of work includes more than 30 books, hundreds of hours of audio and video programs and podcasts. My part of keeping that legacy alive is to write about his teachings and share them with as many people as possible.

There are three other ways I am doing this. The first is that I give this “Little Book of Big Quotes” away to anyone who asks. The second way is that I give away one-hour virtual keynotes to companies or groups. And

2. Back in the day. Back in whose day? For someone born in 2001, “back in the day” means something very different than it does for someone born in 1951. There are far better ways to say the same thing.

3. Old school. “Old school” is tired and wants to go to bed.

4. Arguably. “Arguably” is simply an out, a way to qualify a statement without being adamant. It’s wishy-washy.

5. No problem and no worries (tie).

6. Transparency. It shows up in political campaigns and corporate manifestos. It gets used when there’s reason to believe someone isn’t being “transparent.” It has become fingernails on a chalkboard.

7. LOL and its ilk. Anyone who resorts to and relies on such acronyms

should be shunned and punished, PDQ. 8. Awesome. “Awesome” is not awesome. Not even close.

9. Sustainable. It sounds virtuous whenever it’s used. It’s used too often.

10. Icon. Every actor, every musician, every athlete, every notable person in any field is now referred to as an

“icon.”

Swimming pools in limbo as summer season nears during pandemic

S

wimming-pool operators in the Denver metro area say they are waiting on guidelines from local and state health departments to determine if, when and how they should reopen this season — but if they do reopen, the pool experience will likely look and feel different under the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Town of Castle Rock said it is waiting on guidance from the Tri-County Health Department before deciding if and when its community pools should reopen. In a normal season, most area pools reopen near Memorial Day and run through Labor Day. The town operates two indoor pools at its recreation center, two outdoor pools, two outdoor splashpads and another indoor pool at the Miller Activity Complex aquatics center.

At the Miller Activity Complex splash pad alone, the town might see between 50,000 and 75,000 visits a year, aquatics supervisor Janice Weed said.

The town’s pools are typically at capacity for the duration of peak hours — between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. — each day during a normal season.

Weed said the uncertainty around such a central facet of summer life “adds another layer of anxiety for everyone.”

“It’s just another drop in the bucket of disappointment,” she said.

Still up in the air The Tri-County Health Department deferred to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment when asked how soon guidelines might come out.

A CDPHE spokesperson provided a statement from the Water Quality Control Division, saying the state will reassess phased openings of summer activities after June 1. As of now, all pools must remain closed under the state’s safer-at-home order.

“The governor will make these decisions on a rolling basis, based on the latest data and evidence,” the statement said.

“The department relies heavily on the CDC for guidance on swimming pool cleaning and disinfection and is developing guidelines that will be consistent with the CDC.” The department encouraged pool operators to familiarize themselves with CDC guidelines. The CDC suggested a slew of measures for to aquatic venues to employ if reopening — from promoting good behavior among users to maintaining clean and healthy facilities to preparing for when someone at a facility gets sick.

Brad Anderson is the aquatics supervisor for the City of Englewood, which operates an indoor pool at its recreation center plus the outdoor water park Pirates Cove.

The water park normally has a capacity of 1,800 people and typically sees 100,000 visitors in a year. As of now, Pirates Cove

is slated to reopen on June 7, but that is also contingent on receiving guidelines from the health department and could change.

In addition to the possible closure of community gathering spaces, Anderson said he worries residents will lose a favorite exercise option should pools stay closed.

Englewood offers a variety of learn-to-swim classes, which are lifesavers because drowning is a leading cause of death among children, he said, and also offers exercise programs at its pools.

Anderson called the possible loss of swimming activities a big hit for the community.

“We are always looking for some place to get away from the mundane, everyday life, the stress that we have,” he said.

“You can come to the swimming pool, a recreation center, you can exercise and relieve those stresses of everyday life and just get into a more relaxed atmosphere.”

Most are waiting on the safer-at-home order to expire this month to decide, he said, but are preparing to reopen if possible.

“We predict that it will be controversial regardless of the board’s decision — there will almost certainly be friction in the community,” Field said.

“It’s not an easy time to be a decision maker.”

Field, Weed and Anderson all said that if pools do reopen, people should prepare for a new normal.

It is possible pools will not put out lounge furniture, to discourage people from congregating in groups. People will still be urged to stay six feet apart and wear a mask when not in the water.

Pools might reopen at a lower capacity, or if necessary, conduct recreation by appoint-

ment. Staff will likely monitor social distancing at the community pools, although most HOA private pools are swim-atyour-own-risk facilities without lifeguards, Field said.

Weed and Anderson said their communities will also increase the cleaning and sanitizing of the municipalities’ facilities. Field said increasing cleaning measures will depend on each HOA’s budget availability.

“Without a doubt, you’d want to assure or at least encourage everyone to practice all the different social distancing and cleaning standards that have been put forward,” he said.

Weed asked the community to be patient while pools wait for the green light to reopen and said pool operators are trying to do the same.

“We want to open up just like everyone else,” she said.

Denver EcoFlora Project Funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services has allowed Denver Botanic Gardens to implement a local model of New York Botanic Gardens’ EcoFlora, which recruits citizen scientists for a three-year project to create a database of naturally occuring plant species and their ecological roles.

When I’m running alone and find a rock I get so excited, even as a grown woman,” Dougherty said. “Recently, I was having a pretty rough day at home with the kiddos, took myself out for a solo run and found at least three painted rocks. They brought me so much joy and completely turned my day around. It’s amazing what these small tokens of kindness can do.”

The idea is to let the rocks “hitchhike” with walkers who need company and to leave them behind for the

next person. Those who leave behind their rocks include a location on the community’s Facebook page, Parker “Rocks.” The group is open to anybody who lives in or near Parker.

One woman walking by May 16 said she let a rock tag along with her to Korea and other parts of the United States because she wanted to spread the good will as far as she could.

Elizabeth Higgins posted on March 31, saying they began a scavenger hunt with different painted rocks for their kids to pass the time during stayat-home orders.

“My kiddo has loved going on a new hunt every day and it helps her feel like she is playing with her friends on some level,” she wrote.

Tough times can’t keep athlete down Lucas Campbell heads to college this fall on cheerleading scholarship

L

ucas Campbell, a baseball player who is finishing his senior year at Castle View High School in Castle Rock, admits to getting grief from his friends when he decided to become a cheerleader.

However, it has all worked out, as Campbell got scholarship offers from Alabama and the University of Central Florida, and in the fall he will be joining the national champion cheer team at UCF.

“I used to be a gymnast and then I had to stop gymnastics when I was a freshman in high school,” explained Campbell. “I was in a math class with some of the cheerleaders. I was talking to them and they told me I should come try cheer. I went to one of their practices and ended up liking it.

“When I first started cheerleading, everybody was making fun of me for doing it. The first year I did it, we won state, we got to go to nationals and did well there. I got to be around girls all the time, I got a national championship ring and got a college scholarship out of it.”

Campbell also keeps busy during the COVID-19 pandemic with his landscaping business and offering guitar lessons.
