Some laid-off workers refusing employers’ back-to-work calls Unemployment assistance exceeds wages for many Colorado workers

As limits on business operations triggered by the coronavirus pandemic are slowly being relaxed across Colorado, some employers are asking their laid-off workers to come back to work — but not all of those idled workers are agreeing to return.

And in some cases, state officials are allowing workers who refuse to go back to their jobs to continue to collect unemployment benefits.

In Colorado, employers have reported 250 job refusals in the first couple weeks since late April, around the time the statewide stayat-home order ended, according to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

Two of those were refusals of work from somewhere other than the person’s most recent work situation, but the rest were offers to return to the most recent employer.

Ninety-eight of those refusals had been processed as of May 7, with 93 of those state decisions determining the workers are still eligible for benefits, according to the department.

The online resource was launched by Bitwise Industries in coordination with Gov. Jared Polis, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, and the Kapor Center, according to a news release.

That means that a large percentage of Colorado laidoff workers are paid more in benefits than they were in wages.

must say if a person refused a job offer. From there, the department evaluates whether that person is still eligible for benefits.

Failing to report job refusals when requesting benefit payment can be considered a fraudulent act under Colorado law, said Philip Spesshardt, a manager at the state labor department. That rule applies for any job offer, not just an offer to return to a previous position.

Some reasons a person could turn down a job offer and still collect unemployment benefits, according to Haavind, include: • The work environment is not complying with social distancing or the guidelines of Colorado’s recent safer-at-home order.

• The person is part of a group that is more vulnerable to COVID-19 than others.

• The person has COVID-19 or is caring for someone with the disease.

• Work offered involves an “unreasonable” reduction in the rate of pay.

• Work offered is substantially different and less favorable to the employee than their prior experience with the employer.

The department is asking employers who make a return-to-work offer, or any job offer, that is not accepted to report it on the coloradoui.gov

Gig, self-employed, contract workers For gig workers — such as Lyft drivers — and self-employed and contract workers, their unemployment benefits come through the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, a new stream of money from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. In April, the state announced that people who have lost gig work and similar previously ineligible positions would be able to apply for benefits.

Federal guidelines for returning to work for those groups are not explicit, Haavind said.

The state doesn’t judge when workers should return to work based on market demand in their field.

Such labor market information does not determine whether individuals on regular state unemployment should continue to be eligible for benefits, so any labor market information related to gig workers and the self-employed also would not determine eligibility on pandemic unemployment assistance, Spesshardt said.

“The information would more commonly be used to determine whether an individual is performing an active and reasonable search for work when required,” Spesshardt added.

After either an unemployed Coloradan or an employer reports that a job offer has been turned down, the department suspends the Coloradan’s benefits while it contacts both parties about the job offered and the reason for the refusal before issuing a decision.

The process typically takes between two and five business days, depending upon the responsiveness of both parties, Spesshardt said. Any decision can be appealed by either party, according to Haavind.

Health department orders Castle Rock restaurant to close C&C reopened for dine-in service on Mother’s Day

The Tri-County Health Department ordered a Castle Rock restaurant to close after it reopened its doors to full dine-in service May 10, allowing dozens of customers inside despite public health orders put in place in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

C&C Coffee & Kitchen, a breakfast and Korean kitchen at 4284 Trail Boss Drive, continued to operate in the hours after the May 11 order to close was issued by Tri-County. But by the morning of May 12, would-be customers found the doors to the restaurant closed. Some of them taped cash to the front of the building, near the entrance, in an apparent show of support.

It was a much different scene on Mother’s Day, when C&C had a line out the door about 10 a.m. Families of all sizes filed in past a “bouncer” with a visible sidearm. Every seat was taken as folks dined in. The floor was packed with people standing, waiting for coffee or take-out orders. One person could be seen wearing a mask inside the building.

“I expected it to be busy. I never expected this,” owner April Arellano said. “I’m so happy so many people came out to support the Constitution and stand up for what is right. We did our time. We did our two weeks. We did more than two weeks … and we were failing. We had to do something.”

Arellano posted on Facebook stating the Castle Rock Police Department notified the Tri-County Health Department of the violation of Colorado Order 20-28, stating all restaurants must cease dine-in service until at least May 31.

“No mask no problem btw,” the Facebook post said.

Shortly after noon May 11, Tri-County Health Department issued a news release saying it had ordered the business to close. The health department had warned the restaurant on May 8 not to open, according to the release.

“It is disheartening that this restaurant has chosen to move ahead of the public orders and not even consider implementing best practices to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” John Douglas, Tri-County’s executive director, said in the news release. “It is not fair to the rest of the community and other business owners that are following Safer at Home and doing their part. We sincerely hope that C&C will choose to cooperate with the rules under which they are allowed to operate so we can lift this closure order.”

Arellano did not respond to a Colorado Community Media reporter’s request on May 11 for comment regarding the order to close. But the next morning, it was evident the cafe was not welcoming in customers.

“We in the service industry have been taking precautions for years … We wash and sanitize everything anyway ...

“People are piling into (retailers),” Arellano said. “So right now, I don’t really see the difference. And we’re human … I know a lot of things are ran by fear. I don’t have that fear.”

Arellano is the latest restaurateur to reopen her doors to dine-in service against statewide public health orders. A Centennial business, Waters Edge Winery and Bistro, reopened for dine-in service May 1. The Tri-County

Health Department ordered Waters Edge to close before the restaurant agreed to abide by the order and resume curbside and carry-out service.

Those patronizing the Castle Rock restaurant on May 10, for the most part, did not feel concerned with wearing a mask or social distancing. Many came out to support Arellano specifically, believing she is taking a stand for what they believe is right. “(My husband) had asked what I wanted to do for Mother’s Day. Since everything is closed down, I said, ‘Well, I really don’t know,’” said Hannah Nunn. “Then when (Arellano) posted she was opening for dine-in, I said, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ We’re

ready to get back to normal and not being forced to stay home. And takeout does not taste as good.”

Linda Schattilly visited C&C May 10 because she felt she needed to support a business defiantly opening.

“I’m not afraid to be out. I’m not going to wear a mask. I’m healthy. I’m in good shape, and I don’t think it’s as serious as they say,” Schattilly said.

“The communities are being devastated. People are losing everything ...

They should have never shut anybody down. They should’ve told all the old ones (people) and all the ones that don’t have the right immune systems to stay home and let people do their jobs. People are being devastated.”

STEM court cases delayed amid pandemic Uncertainty surrounds future proceedings, DA says

Both criminal cases in the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting have now experienced delays because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The trial for 19-year-old Devon Erickson, who pleaded not guilty in January, was rescheduled from June to September. He is scheduled to appear in court for a motions hearing on Aug. 17.

Alec McKinney, 16, pleaded guilty in February and was set for sentencing this month. That hearing was pushed back because of the pandemic but a new date is not yet available. All dates could change again.

The pandemic closed Douglas County courtrooms with the exception of emergency hearings through May 8. Other matters were handled remotely. Jury trials are suspended through July 6, according to a May 5 order from Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan B. Coats.

Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler said there remain many unanswered questions moving forward. A courtroom for hearings like a sentencing or trial in a high-profile case would typically be packed with supporters of victims, the suspect and news media, Brauchler said.

“It would be transparent and scrutinized by the public,” he said.

Colorado and Douglas County have now transitioned to a saferat-home phase of reopening, but gatherings larger than 10 people remain banned. The prosecution alone brings a team of about four people to court. Then there is the suspect, defense attorneys, the judge, deputies providing security, and other attendees, which all quickly adds up to 10 or more people, Brauchler said.

Brauchler is not sure what the court proceedings will look like once they resume. Will they be broadcast? Will they limit and spread people out in the courtroom?

Will people be able to view them remotely?

“It’s challenging,” he said.

South Metro Fire now overseen by elected board New district boundaries reflect full scope of massive agency

For the first time in several years, South Metro Fire Rescue will be overseen by a board of directors directly elected by citizens.

The sprawling fire protection district stretches from south Jefferson County to the prairie east of Parker, providing emergency services to more than 380,000 people.

The district absorbed two large fire districts since 2017: Cunningham, which included parts of Centennial and unincorporated Arapahoe County, and Littleton Fire Rescue, which included Littleton, Highlands Ranch and a swath of unincorporated Jefferson County.

During the lengthy process of absorbing the two districts, South Metro was overseen by a fire authority — like a board of directors, but with 12 members mostly appointed by local governments.

With the merger of the districts complete, South Metro will now be overseen by an elected seven-member board, with each member representing a district of between 50,000 and

60,000 people.

Voters chose four members for the board on May 5: Sue Roche will represent District 1, situated between Parker Road and C-470. Jim Albee will represent District 3, covering much of west Centennial. Cindy Hathaway, who ran unopposed, will represent District 4, covering Littleton and a chunk of south Jefferson County.

Renee Anderson, who also ran unopposed, will represent District 5, covering western Highlands Ranch and the Chatfield area.

The newly elected board members will serve threeyear terms because of a change in state law that al- Roche ters when special district elections are held.

The remaining three districts will be overseen

by Laura Simon, Bill Shriver and Hank Eng. Their seats will be up for elections in 2022.

Sue Roche, a CPR/first aid instructor and volun- Hathaway teer firefighter with the Franktown Fire Protection District, said she hopes to ensure that South Metro’s equipment and apparatus meet the needs of the diverse district.

“You need a balance,” Roche said.

“We have a vast district, with everything from rural areas to high rises, so we need to make sure we’re being

strategic so we can balance equipment needs with other programs.”

“Emergencies don’t care which party you’re registered with,” she said. “That needs to come across in every decision we make.”

Jim Albee, who works in finance, has sat on the South Metro fire authority since 2019, and previously sat on the board of Littleton Fire Protection District.

Albee said he hopes to remain focused on Albee South Metro’s core functions: maintaining good response times, training specialized teams to handle different situations, conducting inspections of businesses and workplaces, and ensuring financial sustainability.

Another focus: fireAnderson fighter safety.

“First responders face cancer, heart disease, depression and suicide,” Albee said. “We need to stay focused on their health and well-being.”

Renee Anderson, who on May 5 also won reelection to the Highlands Ranch Metro District Board of Directors, said it’s important South Metro Fire be vigilant for how the COVID-19 pandemic

could impact the district’s finances.

South Metro is funded through a mill levy on property, and Anderson said if many businesses fail in coming years, the district could end up facing a budget shortfall.

“There are still a lot of unknowns,” Anderson said. “We need to be cautious with our budget while we wait for this to shake out.”

Anderson said she also wants to explore ways to boost turnout in special district elections.

“People don’t always have the best or the most information on these sorts of elections, but they have a lot of impact on your life and your community,” Anderson said. “We see such small numbers vote on these boards. I want to see more people weigh in.”

Cindy Hathaway, also the executive director of Littleton’s Western Welcome Week festival, said she hopes to work on boosting services at the far western edge of South Metro Fire’s district.

“The Columbine area just has Station 13,” Hathaway said. “It’s kind of an island. I hope to see what the district plans to do to keep services high out there.”

Hathaway previously sat on the board of Littleton Fire Protection District, and said she’s excited to work with the fire service again.

“I’m really excited to get in there and see what South Metro is all about,” she said.

Centennial restaurant reopens after stopping dine-in service

A Centennial business that serves wine and food briefly closed last week after its decision to offer dine-in service sparked warnings from the TriCounty Health Department. Waters Edge Winery and Bistro reopened a day later after agreeing to follow public health orders issued in March after the COVID-19 pandemic hit Colorado.

Waters Edge is among businesses being championed by a group of people who believe restaurants should be allowed to offer dine-in service. They believe it is unfair that retail stores

can welcome in customers but restaurants are confined to curbside pick-up, take-out and delivery for at least a couple more weeks.

On May 7, Waters Edge shut its doors after the health department issued an order to close.

“We have chosen to temporarily close our doors as we work to determine what our next steps are, as they have threatened us with imprisonment for exercising our Freedom,” stated a post on the bistro’s Facebook page. “We are humbled by all of the outpouring of support and love we have received for so many of our favorite people during these trying

times. We will reopen. That is our pledge.”

In a May 8 news release announcing the reopening of Waters Edge, Tri-County said it had been assured the restaurant would comply with the public health orders against dine-in service.

“We appreciate the rapid cooperation of Waters Edge Winery in complying with the relevant public health orders,” Tri-County Executive Director John Douglas said in the release. “Our goal is to help everyone in our community, both residents and businesses, get back to the highest level of normalcy we can achieve with

COVID-19 in a safe and healthy manner.”

Waters Edge, 2101 E. Arapahoe Road, was forced to close its dine-in service, along with all Colorado restaurants, beginning March 19.

The restaurant owner decided to reopen for dine-in service May 1. TriCounty officials reported receiving 17 complaints about the restaurant between May 1 and May 5.

Gov. Jared Polis lifted Colorado’s stay-at-home order on April 27, but some counties, including Arapahoe, where Waters Edge is located, remained under local health departments’ stay-at-home orders through May 8. While many types of businesses were allowed to reopen as of May 9, under Polis’ new safer-at-home guidelines, dine-in service at restaurants and bars is still not permitted.

Reopen Colorado, a Facebook group rallying people statewide to defy public health orders, had a post on its page encouraging people to show up to Waters Edge at 3 p.m. May 6.

“We need to be there with cameras rolling and a crowd of support,” the post reads.

Waters Edge opened May 6 at its standard 3 p.m. time.

A Colorado Community Media reporter attempted to interview owner Jennifer Hulan at the restaurant May 6, but Hulan declined and asked the reporter to leave the property. A follow-up phone request for an interview also was declined.

Shortly after 3 p.m. May 6, most customers sat on the restaurant’s outdoor porch and some chatted with workers at the bar.

Polis said dine-in service at restaurants will not be allowed by state order at least until the end of the month. Eager to get customers back,

some restaurateurs have contacted local political leaders and the health department, pleading to let them reopen.

Pam Briere, owner of West Main Taproom and Grill in Parker, opened her business for a few weeks in February before being shut down in March.

Briere said she purposefully leased a space with extra floor room for a reason: she wanted to give her customers an experience. Briere said her original business plan heavily relied on dine-in service, to the tune of 80%.

It’s the reason she installed a communal table and many beer options.

Briere owns a restaurant in Omaha, Nebraska, too, where the governor allows restaurants to operate at 50% capacity with 9-foot social distancing guidelines and a requirement for servers to wear masks.

Within minutes of watching Polis’ news conference May 4, she wrote him a letter.

“I was upset because you will let Walmart be open. Home Depot, Lowe’s and those big box stores are packed with people, yet you won’t let us small business restaurateurs open at 50% capacity, taking all the precautions?”

Briere said May 6.

“What’s frustrating right now is not knowing. Why can’t the counties open up and let us open up?” Briere said.

Briere said she has received a lot of negativity from people on social media when her letter was posted to a community Facebook page, Living in Parker, CO. However, Briere said her employees were begging to work.

“Of course,” she said, when she does reopen, “I’m going to have safety precautions in place.”

Disease that’s spreading isn’t entirely about virus

our dead in Ohio,” the song says. It was recorded by countertenor Neil Young and the other members of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young QUIET on May 21, 1970, just DESPERATION weeks after a tragic incident on the Kent State University campus.

“Kent State” for many has a similar recall effect that “Columbine” does.

I heard the song on the 50th anniverCraig Marshall sary of Kent State and saw the familiar Smith media images of the massacre, notably Mary Ann Vecchio screaming over the body of a student

lying face down.

At the time, college students were protesting the war in Vietnam. Many of us carried homemade signs, had long hair, and stood in defiance of government-imposed rules and regulations.

Sound familiar?

It’s unlikely, however, that a song will rise from the current coronavirus protests that will change the nation like “Ohio” did. But who knows?

There are other similarities between then and now: The nightly news then had a body count; likewise, the nightly news now.

Protesters then were called every name in the book. Protesters now are called every name in the book.

The line of separation, it seems, is represented by nothing more than a face mask.

Many refuse, can’t be bothered. One woman said masks were “uncomfortable.” I wondered what she would think about a ventilator?

Photojournalism student John Filo’s photo of Vecchio, who was 14 at the time, won a Pulitzer Prize. Vecchio was kneeling over the body of Jeffrey Miller, who had been shot by the Ohio National Guard.

Vecchio was a runaway from Florida. She exchanged her colorful story to a reporter for a ticket to California but was returned to her home.

Currently she is working as a respiratory therapist, a field that generally requires her to wear: A mask.

Even though the virus is not over, providing your readers with correct and pertinent information will greatly alleviate our anxiety, settle the markets and hopefully give us confidence that we can soon start to recover and that our plans to reopen Colorado businesses are based on scientific facts and data — not on political pressure.

Much concern was expressed for citizens stuck at home, and businesses hurting from the economic downturn.

Achieving excellence by thinking ahead

P

lanning and preparing for our future may seem a little challenging right now, right?

Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.”

You may be wondering how these two are connected or related. Keep reading as I connect the dots for us. WINNING As I speak with WORDS clients and partners each day, I find myself in conversations around the importance of planning and thinking ahead. We are playing a most formidable opponent right now, the COVID-19 virus.

Michael Norton And not only are we fighting against the virus, we are fighting against our differences of opinion as to whether or not we open up the state or country, how we open it up, and what the new normal will look like.

With each passing day and new news, our opinions may shift, and our thinking may be different. And as we do, we must remember that the way we see our past is not as important as the way we see our future. So many times, we get caught

up living in the past, or trying to just live in the moment. And as we balance what we know and what we see in the news, living each day and living in the moment, being present in the moment, is a good strategy.

Making the most out of the time we have right now is an awesome way to look at life. And so is thinking ahead and having a plan.

Wait, what? Live in the moment and still think and plan ahead? Yes, that is exactly right. You may be asking how we do that when we do not know what tomorrow will bring.

And that is why it is so very important to do it and do it now. Sure, what we plan today may have us pivot tomorrow, but it’s better than having no plan, so when we are forced into a pivot situation, it’s better to have Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, Plan D, and as many plans as possible so that we do not get caught off guard.

Here is where Aristotle’s quote comes in. “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” There is so much to be said about learning from our past and learning from brilliant philosophers and subject matter experts.

We are what we repeatedly do. So, if excellence is something we aspired to before, we should not change that

now. It may mean that we look for the things we did in the past that made us successful, and repeat those behaviors, attitudes, and skills.

And then, during this time, evaluate what works and what does not work so that we can do more of something else, strive to do things better, and look at different ways to tackle the challenges or opportunities in front of us. More, better, different. And do more, better, different until we meet with excellence again. Not perfection, but excellence.

And one of those ways is to plan and prepare for success. To plan and prepare for excellence. Okay, so we think ahead and the world changes, awesome, as now we go to Plan B. And now we are fully onboard with Plan B and another law or change comes our way, that is fantastic, now we get to move into Plan C. Are you kidding me? This is excellent. Why is it

Record-breaking numbers During the fallout from the Great Recession, the week with the highest number of claims for unemployment assistance filed in Colorado was the week ending Jan. 9, 2010, with 7,749 claims.

Urban homesteaders get back to the land

undari Kraft grew up reading Laura Ingalls Wilder. But while she fantasized about a self-sufficient life in a little house on the prairie, she lived in a bungalow in Northglenn.

“As I got older, I realized moving to the country wasn’t in the cards, but I’m not one to say that’s that,” Kraft said. “The question became: What’s possible?”

When Kraft and her husband bought a place in northwest Denver, she had big ideas: gardens, a greenhouse, goats and chickens. The only catch? Bureaucracy.

With a can-do pioneer spirit, Kraft was the organizer and driving force behind code changes that eased up on urban livestock, greenhouses and front-yard gardens in Denver and beyond.

As time went by and her urban mini-farm flourished, Kraft found herself at the forefront of a movement to rethink how we live in cities.

“It used to be you either live in the city or the country,” said Kraft, the author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Urban Homesteading.” “People aren’t buying into that anymore.”

Outside of her busy life as a public affairs consultant and a mom of two young kids, Kraft milks goats, collects eggs from her chickens, preserves her garden harvests and makes her own soap and bread.

“You can be an urban homesteader, even if you don’t have a yard,” Kraft said. “It’s about a mindset and practices to live more sustainably and self-sufficiently. I didn’t grow up on a farm. There’s not some number of boxes you have to check. If I can do it, you can do it.”

Grow what you like For beginners looking to start growing their own food, the first question is: What do you like?

“Think about what you actually want to eat,” said Michele Hanley, who runs Mile High Urban Farming, which helps design, plan and even maintain gardens around the metro area. “I see a lot of people plant kale because it grows well and it’s good for you, but people don’t like to eat it.”

The cost to start a brand-new garden can add up, Hanley said, but it can pay off.

“Tomatoes are a good return on investment,” she said. “Good tomatoes are, what, $5 to $6 a pound? Well, one good tomato plant can generate 40 pounds. You can even get away with that in a patio pot.”

The biggest misconception Hanley sees is people who think they have a “black thumb.”

The scientific method For those looking to step up their homesteading game, there are few better resources than Colorado State University’s county extension offices. Focused on bringing sciencebased education and information to the community, the offices employ experts in fruit and vegetable gardening, keeping livestock, and safe canning and preserving — all just a phone call away.

“Colorado can be a challenging place to garden,” said Lisa Mason, the horticulture agent for Arapahoe County’s extension office. “We have a short growing season, a variable climate, and tough soil. But we’re here for the community.”

It’s tough to say how much of a family’s diet can be supplemented with garden produce, Mason said, depending on how much time and energy they want to put into it and how much space they have. Even people in apartments can grow herbs, lettuce, tomatoes and peppers on a balcony.

The extension office’s website is loaded with fact sheets on all sorts of gardening topics, all developed to maximize efficiency in the Denver area’s climate and soil.

“There’s an art to gardening, but

there’s also a lot of science you can employ,” Mason said.

In the old days Colorado’s early homesteaders didn’t have the luxury of county extension agents, but they developed wisdom of their own, said Suellen Winstead, the curator of the Littleton Museum, which features an authentic, functioning 1860s-style homestead.

“Back then, your garden was your life,” Winstead said. “Pioneers had to grow enough during a short growing season to preserve food for winter.

This was not a hobby.”

Pioneer families had access to a wide variety of heirloom seeds that were well-suited to local climates, and had keen senses for the intricacies of gardening, developed over lifetimes and generations.

But among their most important resources was community.

“There’s a perception that the Old West was families alone in a cabin miles from the nearest person,” Winstead said. “But what we had here was people settling in communities and relying on each other for support.”

When times got tough, neighbors could rely on each other, Winstead said.

“If my wheat crop failed or my tomatoes died, people pitched in. I think we could learn from that. Gardening and homesteading can bring people together. If you grow more than you can use, find someone in need.”

The frugal mindset of homesteaders

carried on into the Great Depression and World War II, Winstead said.

“It was a habitual thing,” she said.

“They went through a time of great scarcity. You don’t waste. You eat everything on your plate. You find a use for things.”

‘Success isn’t always easy’ Some urban homesteaders still rely on their skills and hard work to provide for their families.

Operating from the yard of a rental duplex in Adams County, Tess and Jeff Curry make a good chunk of their living from the fruits of their labor. Known as “The Honey People” at north Denver farmers markets, the Currys sell honey from their beehive, eggs from their chickens and more.

Tess said she started producing her own food during the Great Recession, when Jeff, a construction worker, was hurting for work and laid up with an injury.

“It’s hard work. Success isn’t always easy, but one benefit is the food just tastes so much better,” Tess said. “I know what’s in my food. I know where it comes from. My grandkids know a potato comes out of the ground.”

Tess said her work has introduced her to the larger community of local growers, and she enjoys trading plants and produce. And if things take a turn for the worse, she knows she can rely on herself and her friends to stay fed.

“We might have to eat a lot of eggs and beans for a while, but hey, at least we’d be eating.”

Student, mask-maker finds ways to give back to community About me I am a junior at Chaparral High School in Parker. I am a dancer at Starstruck Academy of Dance. I am also very involved in school activities such as student government, DECA, National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).

Masks for Hope As I have spent more time processing the current situation we are living in, I realize we are probably living in the most unknown and uncertain portion of our lives that any of us have experienced. I use the word “our” and “us” because we are all living and fighting through this together. No one is experiencing this fear and uncertainty alone. Although some people are more at risk than others, this situation is new to everyone.

The new normal for us is walking into the grocery store with a mask on our face, greeting people from six feet away, and feeling isolated from the outside world. Since when is that normal? I have never felt so useless, so out of control, and I knew many others were feeling the exact same

way. I wanted to change that. I started thinking about what things I could do to help others feel a sense of calm during this unsure time. I realized there was a huge shortage of masks, and so I started a community service project called Masks for Hope.

Making the masks I researched how to make the masks, and my mom taught me how to use the sewing machine. I started making the masks out of fabric and elastic, and we have been donating them to family, nursing homes, assisted living centers, hospitals, and to the military.

So far, I’ve been able to donate over 800

masks to facilities and individuals.

Going into this project, I thought the hardest part was going to be making the masks themselves, but I was so wrong. The hardest part is actually finding fabric and elastic to make the masks, because so many other people are doing the exact same thing.

Getting social I reached out through my Facebook, asking for any donations, and I placed a donation bin on my front porch.

After a couple days, people from all over Colorado have donated fabric and elastic to us, so we could continue making masks. Every day, the dona-

tion bin has been half full, if not completely full. I have never seen nor experienced such a unified community, as I have during this pandemic.

People have even given us masks that they have made themselves to include in our donation piles. I am continuing to make and donate masks every day, because I hope everyone has one, especially those who are at a higher risk. If there was just one thing I could take away from this experience …

It would be that being a citizen doesn’t have to include a role in politics, or a huge discovery. Citizenship isn’t just being legally recognized as a member of a country, but it is embracing the similarities and respecting the differences. The stay-at-home order issued by most states, and some countries, has put everyone on a level playing field. There are poor people, middle class, movie stars, and CEOs that all feel the anxiety of this disease.

Citizenship is love for each other. Citizenship is caring about the well-being of others and doing our part to make the world a better place. We share the same earth, and we breathe the same air. We are all citizens of this country, and no one stands alone. Disasters may hit hard, and they may tear us down, but together we will always rise.

Douglas County students net Daniels Fund scholarships STAFF REPORT

Three Douglas County School District seniors have been named recipients of the Daniels Fund Scholarship, which provides a four-year scholarship to any two- or four-year accredited college or university in the country.

The Daniels Fund Scholarship is given to students who demonstrate exceptional character, leadership, and a

commitment to serving their communities. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and miscellaneous educational expenses not covered by other grants or scholarships.

The recipients are Aiden Ingenthron, of Castle View High School in Castle Rock; James O’Hare, of Legend High School in Parker; and Tatum Kay Reading, of Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch.

Website offers help for out-of-work Coloradans STAFF REPORT

Coloradans affected by job loss in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic can now go to one site to find resources and options with the launch of OnwardCO.org.

According to a news release, OnwardCO connects resources such as 2-1-1, Indeed, LinkedIn and MyColoradoJourney with users based on their location and preferences to the information they need most.

The online resource, launched April 20 by Bitwise Industries, was supported by Gov. Jared Polis, the Colorado Department of Labor and

Employment, and the Kapor Center.

The platform is powered by Shift3 Technologies, Salesforce and Mastercard.

“As we work to ensure the health of safety of Coloradans during these unprecedented times, it’s critical that we also help the economy recover,” Polis said in the news release. “OnwardCO is a key tool in that effort.”

Colorado workers impacted by COVID-19 can use the platform to connect to emergency resources such as food, shelter, child care and money; find training programs to upskill for a new career; and find job opportunities, the release said.

Getting into the swing of family time Clara Hosman loses senior golf season but will play in college

Clara Hosman has been seeing a lot more of her family this spring.

Hosman, who was heading into her senior season on the girls golf team at Legend this spring, will be playing golf in the fall at Division II Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut. She was forced to sit back this season as the Colorado High School Activities Association canceled spring sports because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My parents usually have

time for work, so it’s been really nice hanging out with them,” said Hosman. “We’ve been getting a lot of quality time together. But if not, we’ve been going on hikes, taking my dog out, and my dad and I go play golf when it’s available.

“Unfortunately we can’t go hit balls, which is a little frustrating because I’m trying to get ready for my college season, but we just go out and play usually at Spring Valley or Plum Creek.

It’s been busy but good. The courses are in good condition.”

COACH’S TAKE: ‘Clara has been one of those players coaches will always remember: the ultimate teammate, leader and person. Clara would give herself to help others if needed. Her best golf awaits her as she was just beginning to top into her potential. She will be truly missed at Legend but not forgotten.’

Q&A with Hosman What is the hardest thing about missing your senior season?

Probably not getting the closure. I look forward to golf season all year, being out there with all my friends and being out there competing against the rivals, and my senior year I was looking forward to competing in the state championship and really just getting a closure to the high school season and having a true goodbye to all the teammates and coaches What would have been your goals if you had played this season?

Last year I finished 14th in the state championship so I was hoping to get top 10. The whole team was doing good this year, so hopefully we would have finished top five in the state championships.

How does missing the season affect your college plans, if at all?

It hasn’t yet affected me but I guess some schools are

delaying their processes to follow up, but so far my college has not. So I think we are still good for the fall season.

What is your favorite book?

“The Hate U Give.” There’s a lot of perseverance in it and it is written well.

What is your favorite sports team?

Denver Broncos, because it’s more of a family-cultured thing and my dad is really into it. It’s fun to watch games with him.

What is your favorite TV show?

“Friends.” It’s a comedy and an entertaining show.

What is your favorite food?

My mom’s sloppy joes. They are very good.

Rocky Vista hosts virtual commencement Parker university celebrates graduation of 152 medical students STAFF REPORT

Rocky Vista University hosted a virtual commencement ceremony to celebrate the graduation of 152 medical students from its College of Osteopathic Medicine. The May 1 virtual ceremony included a pre-recorded video that graduates could share with friends and loved ones.

The graduates received their regalia, graduation programs, and diplomas via mail the week of the graduation. Though the graduates could not walk across the stage to be hooded by a loved one, they could have a loved one at home carry out the rite of passage that marks the student’s designation as a holder of a doctorate degree.

Graduates then celebrated by posting photos on social media and sharing them with the Rocky Vista community.

Clinton E. Adams, DO, FACHE, president and CEO, and Thomas N. Told, DO, FACOFP, dist., dean and chief academic officer of Rocky Vista, congratulated the graduates on the completion of their program during the ceremony, and acknowledged the sacrifices they have made to get to this moment in their medical careers, according to a news release.

“There are as many stories about sacrifices, aspirations, overcoming great obstacles, and realizing the impossible dream, as there are graduates here today,” Adams told the graduates, according to the release.

The keynote address was deliv-

ered by Lt. Col. Thomas L. Ely, DO, FACOFP, FAAFP, a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians. In his address, Ely touched on what sets the osteopathic medical profession apart.

“As you sit at the side of an ill patient, a patient who is in pain or is despondent … as an osteopathic physician (you) bring something special: empathy. That is what connects you as an osteopathic physician to another human who is ill,” he said, according to the release.

He also emphasized the importance of self-care and reaching out to fellow physicians for support.

Ely also conducted the commissioning ceremony, which recognized the ranking of 19 graduates from the military medicine track, one of Rocky Vista’s specialty programs.

As a Military Friendly school, Rocky Vista has among the highest number of students attending on a military scholarship of all civilian medical schools in the nation. Earlier in the year, Rocky Vista was awarded the Military Friendly Top Ten School Gold Award for its commitment to military students and military medical education.

Rocky Vista gifted the graduating seniors with a 12-month subscription to COMBANK, a question bank designed to help students prepare for the COMLEX Level 3 examination, which certifies students as competent in the foundational domains of osteopathic medicine. They also received an engraved pen set and an Alumni Association pin.

Also honored during the ceremony were the graduates from the MSBS program, who will officially graduate and receive their degrees May 16.
