What’s next for public transit in Parker?

RTD disagrees with some residents’ views on expanding service

On any given weekday, Parker residents who rely on the “P” route bus to downtown Denver from the Jordan Park-N-Ride station can expect to wait.

The Jordan station is well-known for its crowded parking lot, and any regular rider of the “P” route knows one universal truth: You have to get there early.

The “P” route is a peak-period service that operates between Parker, The Pinery and downtown Denver. The bus runs from about 5:30 to 8 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.

Now, some riders of the “P” route feel shortchanged. The overcrowded parking lot and sometimes overcapacity buses provide an anecdotal contradiction to the statistics provided by the Regional Transportation District, which insists that enhanced service for the “P” route is not necessary. The Parker RTD tax district generated a total of about $10 million from sales taxes in 2017, according to an RTD tax audit.

Some within the district feel they’re not getting their money’s worth.

Kory Nelson, an assistant city attorney with the City of Denver, is an administrator of the Facebook page “RTD ‘P’ Bus Riders,” where people can post their concerns with the bus line — the only RTD bus line with its own Facebook page. The page has 142 likes.

“We just don’t feel like we’re getting a decent return on the investment we’re getting,” Nelson said. “I understand we shouldn’t get a one-to-one return, but I think that when they cut our ‘P’ route to half the number of buses arbitrarily, they did us a disservice. They’re trying to bleed us dry.”

Nelson is leading the charge on a planned protest of RTD at the May 17 ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Southeast Rail Extension in Lone Tree.

Nelson feels RTD has favored the light rail project and left Parker’s needs on the back burner.

Residents have said RTD insists the ParkN-Ride sits at only 50 percent capacity.

To provide users a solution to the parking problem, RTD placed fliers on windshields showing different places to park in the area.

Some have also called for more frequent stops from the “P” route loop to Civic Center Station in downtown Denver. So far, RTD officials say, the route does not draw enough passengers to require more frequent stops at this time.

“Crowding is subjective. There are people who say a bus is crowded when all seats are occupied. That’s where we want to be. That’s healthy use of the taxpayer dollar,” said Jessie Carter, RTD’s manager of service scheduling and planning. “Some people think it’s crowded if they have to sit next to someone. The suburban market does see crowding as anytime they have to sit next to someone.”

Currently, the average busload of the “P” route is about 30, below the capacity of 49, according to RTD numbers. Nelson believes those numbers do not accurately represent the “P”

route’s daily uses.

Ken Mihalik, the RTD board of directors representative for District G, which includes Parker, said expanding the service of the “P” route would have cost $2 million of the town’s allotted $10 million garnered from RTD taxpayers.

Bryce Matthews, the town’s planning manager, said the town acts as more of a facilitator to RTD in these matters, bringing the desires of the residents to the attention of RTD officials and board members. In some instances the town will partner with RTD or bring up concerns on behalf of residents. Matthews said that, on top of the concern with the “P” route, many residents who work at the local businesses live out of town, but RTD does not provide weekend services or service past 7 p.m.

No single theme In 2006, the community rejected a full-service 410 bus — connection to Parker and the Lincoln Station — to replace the “P” route. The 483 is the other long-distance coach that serves the Lincoln Avenue corridor and Nine Mile Station in Aurora.

“There isn’t a single market for the commute to work in Parker. Parker keeps expanding and growing, and

their drive distance and drive times I wouldn’t say are horrible,” Carter said, “but is it enough to push it to influence transit needs downtown, and there is that challenge to actually convince people there is a value in using transit to get to their place of work.”

Changes to local service, Carter said, comes from statistics gained on ridership demand and feasibility of providing that service. RTD is short about 10 percent of its needed drivers and maintenance workers, Carter said.

Although a new coach looping to the new end-of-line light rail station at RidgeGate Parkway, about seven miles west of downtown Parker, has been discussed, no action has been taken on it yet. The next RTD service change is in May. There are no changes, other than the introduction of the Southeast Rail Extension, set for Parker.

“As we move toward the future, we’ll work with the Town of Parker and the county to look at some things we’ve looked at in the past,” Carter said. “Right now, I’d like to see a lot more development around RidgeGate.

I know it’s coming, and it’s something we have to plan for, but in the near term it’s not there. In the future we hope it will be there.”

The Southeast Rail Extension project will officially open to the public May 19, extending the light rail end-of-line 2.3 miles farther south in Lone Tree.

The extension project will provide easier access to light rail for surrounding residents, yet some Parker residents question what the town’s future in public transit will look like.

“I don’t know that there’s any type of a single theme,” Mihalik said. “But I certainly want Parker and District G to get the service that is commensurate with the taxes being paid.”

The squeaky wheel On Feb. 25, RTD unveiled the rebranding of the Call-N-Ride to FlexRide bus. The FlexRide name, according to an RTD news release, “better reflects the flexible nature of a service designed with each community’s specific needs in mind.”

Commissioners rebuke red flag bill as governor signs it into law Board calls for independent review of new law

Not long after Gov. Jared Polis signed into law a controversial red flag bill, Douglas County commissioners released a video and statements rebuking the recently passed legislation and urging an independent review of the law to assess its constitutionality.

The commissioners previously adopted an ordinance that stated the county would only fund constitutional laws and questioned the bill’s due process. The ordinance cites state law C.R.S. 27-65-127 as a sufficient substitute for the red

flag bill. The board stopped short of calling their ordinance a “second amendment sanctuary” stance, although numerous other counties have declared themselves sanctuary counties.

The video released April 12 opens with the Douglas County logo beneath the words “Taking a stand for your constitutional rights.” It can be seen at www.douglas.co.us.

In it, Commissioner Abe Laydon states: “The issue for us is not whether those with mental illness who pose a risk should have their gun rights restricted. That is already a well-settled law that we support.”

What commissioners do question is the process for removing an individual’s guns outlined in the red flag bill and whether that process is constitutional, Laydon said.

“What is not in question is our commitment and investment in public safety and improved mental health services for residents of Douglas County,” Commissioner Lora Thomas said. “What also is not in question is our support of the Constitution of the Unites States of America and the State of Colorado.

We cannot and will not stand by idly as your freedoms and liberties are threatened.”

Board Chairman Roger Partridge said the county will be working with other counties who want an independent legal review of the law to determine its constitutionality.

State Senate sponsors of H.B. 191177, also called the Extreme Risk Protection Order, released statements April 12, maintaining the bill will save lives.

“I am sick and tired of inaction

when we see tragedies caused by gun violence,” Sen. Lois Court said.

“I am absolutely sure this bill will save lives and I am proud that after years of working on similar legislation this was finally signed into law.”

The bill was named for fallen Deputy Zackari Parrish of the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, who was shot and killed in 2017 while attempting to place a man on a mental health hold.

While commissioners decry the bill, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock has been a vocal advocate for the bill. He believes had it been in place before Parrish’s death, the shooting may have been prevented.

Spurlock has faced backlash for his support of the bill and urged commissioners not to adopt their ordinance denouncing it.

Students commit to serving others ‘Columbine Spirit’ fuels projects on Day of Service

More than a thousand students from Columbine High School will embark on service projects throughout the community on April 20 for the third annual Day of Service.

“We wanted to take such a tragic day and try to turn it into something positive,” Scott Christy, Columbine’s principal, said. “It’s a great way to honor the day, honor the victims.”

In the aftermath of the April 20, 1999 tragedy, community members leaned on one another for hope and strength and were overwhelmed with an outpouring of kindness and support from people across the world.

“It’s hard to articulate in words,” Christy said.

“You kind of have to feel it. A lot of schools or organizations will say they’re a family, but I think at Columbine, it means something different. There is a bond that we have with each other and with our school.

I think there is a pride, a love for

school that I think is very difficult to replicate anywhere else.”

Christy calls it the “Columbine Spirit” — something that bonds the school together.

Currently Columbine High has 13 teachers who were on staff in 1999 and five teachers who were students at Columbine that year. Several long-standing teachers recently retired.

Christy said educators like Frank DeAngelis, former principal, and the teachers who stuck with the school after the tragedy went through difficult times and should be recognized for their heroic actions.

“To stick with something like this and make it into what it is today is truly heroic,” he said. “It’s a model of resiliency.”

Although current students were not yet born when the tragedy struck, it is something that lingers within the culture of the school.

“The kids are aware,” Christy said.

“But they don’t come here thinking this horrible thing happened. This is their home.”

Christy said the story of Columbine High is one of strength, resilience, community and family.

Christy said he hopes other schools and organizations who have experienced mass shootings and tragedy can look at Columbine and see that they can come back strong if they work as a community.

The Day of Service is one way Columbine High is continuing that strength.

For the first 17 years after the tragedy, school was not held on April 20.

Classes are still not held on that day, but for the past two years, the Day of Service has been.

Service projects vary from sprucing up the garden at the local elementary school to cleaning up nearby Clement Park and local trails. The day is centered on remembering the lives lost, reflecting on the lives forever changed and recommitting to the power of service in the community.

While projects are limited to Columbine High students and teachers, the school encourages the community and people across the world to participate in their own service projects on April 20.

It’s a challenge to make a recommitment — to kindness, to community, to serving others.

Director of safety and security outlines policies, practices

At the Douglas County School District, 18 employees — a combination of armed personnel and security technicians — make up a 24-hour dispatch communication center in Castle Rock. The number of unarmed campus security specialists assigned to middle and high schools is 54.

And 24 school resource officers and marshals from the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office rotate through high schools and middle schools daily.

Rich Payne’s Safety and Security Department is robust, doing all it can to protect the 68,000 students and 8,400 employees at the district’s 91 schools.

Columbine, Payne said, changed everything.

“We address everything now as a team,” said Payne, who has been the district’s director of safety and security for nearly five years. Previously, he spent 24 years as an officer at the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Since Columbine, DCSD has implemented a universal standard response protocol from the I Love U Guys Foundation, as well as Safe2Tell and TextATip, both confidential reporting services. A safety and security committee formed with representatives from law enforcement agencies, fire agencies, district leadership, schools and the parent community. The committee has about 20 members who meet once a month to discuss safety issues.

DCSD’s security and safety is twofold, Payne said. There are the physical features — cameras at every school, locks on doors, ballistic film on some windows. Behind the scenes, the school district works closely with local law enforcement — the sheriff ’s office, Lone Tree Police Department, Castle Rock Police Department and Parker Police Department. A radio system allows for constant cross-communication between jurisdictions, reducing response times when a problem arises, Payne said.

A week after her daughter Lauren Townsend was killed at Columbine, Dawn Anna stood at a memorial event beside her husband, Bruce Beck.

While the speaker said to bow their heads in prayer, Anna said something told her to look up.

She saw a red-tailed hawk circling above, its head cocked, with one eye on the crowd.

“Lauren was there letting us know it was OK,” said Beck, Lauren’s stepfather.

“It was a sign: Keep looking up,” Anna said. “Keep moving ahead.”

In the 20 years since Columbine, Anna and Beck have donated more than $300,000 to animal-related causes through Lauren’s Wildlife Fund, in honor of their daughter who felt a pow-

erful connection to animals.

“Lauren worked at a small animal hospital, and every week she’d come home saying we needed to adopt this dog or that dog,” Beck said.

The fund has given grants to the Keenesburg Wild Animal Sanctuary, the Wildlife Experience and groups that save wolves in Fort Collins, apes in Hawaii, and even raccoons in Minnesota.

“We couldn’t be more proud of the difference she’s made in animals’ lives,” Beck said.

Moving forward hasn’t been easy.

“With Lauren’s loss came a huge hole in my heart,” Anna said. “That hole doesn’t get any smaller, and I don’t expect it to. But my goal is to make my heart bigger, so the hole won’t seem so big. Since losing her I’ve tried to do good deeds, to reach out to others in tragedy. Maybe it’s a little selfish, because I know the more you

give, the more you help yourself.”

Anna said she tries to reach out to others going through trauma and tragedy, but she’s learned there are no words to be said.

After the tragedy at Columbine, Anna said her first visitor was a friend who was known for being a motormouth.

“I thought, ‘please just go away.’ I wasn’t sleeping or eating. Sometimes I’d forget to breathe. If Lauren wasn’t doing it, I didn’t want to do it. But my friend sat next to me. She didn’t say a word. Every now and then, she’d get me a glass of water.”

Anna said it was a great lesson.

“To help others, just sit with them.

There’s not a word you can say that will mean a thing.”

Anna is proud of Columbine’s new atrium that replaced the library where Lauren died.

‘You can’t solve it by doing any one thing’ Rick Townsend, father of Lauren Townsend

Rick Townsend’s daughter Lauren has been gone for 20 years, and the thoughts still cross his mind.

“I wonder what she’d be like today,” Townsend said. “We lost graduation.

A wedding. Grandkids. Sometimes I just sit and think about it.”

Townsend has devoted himself to keeping the memories of Lauren and the others who died with her in 1999 alive. He’s president of the Columbine Memorial Foundation, which maintains the memorial to the Columbine victims in Clement Park, adjacent to the high school.

“We’re here to remember those that died, support those who were injured, and honor those affected by the shooting,” Townsend said.

The school and the memorial are places of great Townsend importance to Townsend — the memorial as a place of remembrance, but the school as a place of life.

“The school is a vital part of the community,” Townsend said. “It was before this happened, and it still is today. Getting rid of the old library, where so many died, and building the new one made it so the school could

be a valid, highly functioning high school, and not a monument to death and tragedy.”

Townsend said he still struggles to understand.

“I don’t know why these shootings are still happening,” he said. “People think because I lost a child to one I must know something others don’t, but I don’t know any more than they do. There’s the availability of guns, but it’s a multifaceted thing. There’s mental health issues. You can’t solve it by doing any one thing. I don’t have the answers.”

But Townsend does know that he’d like to see a more loving world.

“There’s a need to connect to people.

We can commit to being more kind and accepting and considerate of others. Try to pass that along to others.”

Sean Graves will always carry some of Columbine with him.

Shot several times in the massacre’s first moments, Graves spent three years after the tragedy in a wheelchair.

In 2002, he rolled onto the graduation stage, stood up, took his diploma and walked away.

Graves still struggles to run or climb a ladder without strain.

“I was 15 when I was shot,” Graves said.

“That was 20 years ago.

I’ve lived with these injuries longer than I lived without them.”

Graves still struggles Graves with flashbacks and post-traumatic stress, he said. To this day, he analyzes any room he’s in for exits and people who could be threats.

The years after the tragedy brought darkness and anger, Graves said.

“I couldn’t tell you why it happened,” Graves said. “I wasn’t in the killers’ shoes. But for me, the only way I could move forward without being angry at life or my situation was to forgive them.”

“It was relieving, to be honest.

Once I realized I didn’t have to spend the rest of my life angry at this pair of people, a weight was taken off my chest. I stepped out of the darkness.”

Graves’ wife, Kara, said she is grateful for her husband’s personal growth.

“Without forgiving them, it’s like they won,” Kara said. “They still control your life. We’ve been together 16 years, so I’ve seen him before and after he came to terms with it. It’s definitely improved our quality of life.”

Among the more profound impacts, Kara said, is how they raise their 3-year-old daughter.

“I think 20 years ago this wasn’t at the forefront of anybody’s mind,” Kara said. “Today it’s a way of life.

As kids we did tornado drills. Our daughter will do shooter drills. It’s taken our innocence away.”

Graves said if there’s a silver lining, it’s that his daughter will grow up more aware.

“I kept telling myself it wasn’t real,” he said. “I hope my daughter is smarter. I’ll tell her: If this happens, you have to survive.”

COLUMBINE TRAGEDY: 20 YEARS LATER

‘Every morning, I wake up and recite their names’ Former Columbine Principal Frank DeAngelis

Frank DeAngelis stuck it out.

DeAngelis was principal of Columbine High School the day of the tragedy in 1999. He stayed in that role until 2014.

“When I retired, I’d been here through the graduation of all the kids who were in elementary school during the tragedy,” DeAngelis said.

Today, DeAngelis is a consultant for Jefferson County Public Schools and a national speaker on recovering from tragedy. He’s thankful his work puts him back in touch with young people.

“I was a teacher, coach and principal for 35 years,” he said. “I missed the kids.”

DeAngelis rejects the accusation that swirled in the aftermath of the attack that Columbine’s culture pushed the killers to violence.

“Was there bullying?

Yes,” he said.

But DeAngelis was one of a select few who viewed the “basement tapes,” lengthy video diaries made by the killers, before they were DeAngelis destroyed.

“In those tapes, they don’t talk about bullying. They talk about feeling godlike. Agents of natural selection. People who will be remembered forever.”

Instead, DeAngelis focuses his heart

on the 13 victims killed in 1999.

“Every morning, I wake up and recite their names,” he said. “I’ll do that until the day I die.”

After 20 years, DeAngelis said, he hopes Columbine serves as a lesson that communities can heal after mass trauma.

“We’ll always remember that horrific day, but Columbine represents hope,” he said. “It’s not an easy road.

There was a phrase that became popular after the tragedy: ‘We Are Columbine.’ And it’s true — we became one.”

‘We see a thousand minds transformed’ Darrell and Sandy Scott, parents of victim Rachel Scott

Rachel Scott’s life ended in 1999, but her spirit of compassion continues to save the lives of others around the world.

Rachel’s parents, Darrell and Sandy Scott, run Rachel’s Challenge, a program that spreads their daughter’s principles of love and understanding far and wide.

“We always miss her, but we get to celebrate her life every day,” Sandy said. “She could’ve lived to be 90 years old and she might not have had this kind of impact. And this is what she wanted: to make a difference in the world. And she’s doing it.”

Rachel’s Challenge had its origins in testimony Darrell gave before Congress a month after Columbine, with a powerful speech that remains popular today.

“By the time I got home, I was invited to 40 major events,” Darrell said. “For two years I traveled to football stadiums, hockey arenas — I spoke in front of tens of thousands of people. We began to realize the impact of Rachel’s story on young lives. We met with educators and began to form

the program.”

The program includes a series of challenges, drawn from Rachel’s diaries, that push kids to rid themselves of prejudice and find compassion for each other.

Today, Rachel’s Challenge has 50 presenters who travel the world speaking to students. Darrell estimates they’ve been in front of 28 million kids.

The numbers may be big, but the effects are personal and intimate.

“We hear from more than 150 kids a year who planned to commit suicide, but changed their minds after our programming,” Darrell said.

Spreading love is a great privilege, Darrell said, though he wishes it drew wider attention from the media.

“We see a thousand minds transformed in one school,” Darrell said.

“Bullies are crying, kids are helping one another, and it gets maybe a blip in the news. Then, somebody says something nasty to someone else, and they’ll get 30 minutes.”

Darell said he takes to heart something Rachel wrote just a month before she died: “Compassion is the greatest form of love humans have to offer.”

They never stop.

Coni Sanders’ father Dave Sanders was the only teacher killed at Columbine.

To this day, Sanders still gets bombarded with messages from what she calls “Columbiners,” people obsessed with every last detail of the massacre that took her father.

“There are hundreds of social media accounts claiming to be the killers,” Sanders said. “Worse, some claim to be my dad.”

The most disturbing thing, Sanders said, is how many mass shooters turn out to be “Columbiners” themselves.

For Sanders, it’s a clarion call to rethink how our culture, and mass media, approach mass shooters.

“Making them famous is like wrapping up a present and giving it to them,” she said.

Sanders is under no delusion that eliminating notoriety will stop mass shootings.

“Anybody with half a brain knows we’ll never be able to stop this,” she said. “It’s about reducing it, and there’s no one answer… It’s like a thousandpiece puzzle, but if we start putting it together we’ll see better results.”

Sanders said she’s frustrated by what she calls a lack of action on gun violence.

“It’s unbelievable to me that people’s

beliefs outweigh their loved one’s lives.”

After her father’s death, Sanders became a forensic therapist, working with people released from prison for violent crimes, to help them chart a safer path in life.

“Right after it happened, I wondered: What happened to those two boys? I found out they did get mental health treatment. They were in a diversion program. And now I work with that program.”

Sanders said she’s not sure her work gives her any insight into Columbine specifically, but said we can all help make the world safer.

“Violence prevention is smiling at someone you normally wouldn’t,” she said. “Saying hi to someone. Striking up a conversation. The people I work with, when they’re violent, it’s when they feel left out, alone or wronged.”

Sanders said she doesn’t hold ill will over her father’s death, though she spent years angry at him for repeatedly running back into the school, braving gunfire to secure classrooms full of panicked students.

“But if he could come back, I think he’d tell us he’d do it again,” she said.

After 20 years, Sanders said, it’s high time we shift our thinking.

“This is no longer about what happened on April 20,” she said. “This is about how we have fewer April 20ths.

We’re all in danger, but we have love and hope we can focus on.”

In 1999, Rebecca Bartee, 41, was murdered at her apartment on South Dayton Street in Centennial. Eighteen years later, a 71-year-old man was charged with her murder but died before a trial date could be set.

District Attorney George Brauchler said Bartee’s family was denied justice.

Bartee was a prosecutor for the district attorney’s office and worked there for three weeks before her death.

On April 9 at the Parker Arts, Culture and Events Center, Bartee’s sister, Peggy Brockington, spoke about Bartee and thanked the investigators and journalist responsible for tracking down the alleged killer. The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office unveiled a wall dedicated to Bartee in the department’s training room.

“She had a great quest for justice, and the decision to name the training center after her is an honor to her search for justice all the time,” Brockington said. “We will never forget her.

We will always love her.”

The ceremony closed with a tribute to No Notoriety, an organization that advocates for omitting the names of convicted killers in news stories. The organization was founded by Tom and Caren Teves, whose son, Alex, was murdered in 2012 along with 11 others in the Aurora theater shooting.

The program has garnered national attention.

“It’s the idea that `Yes, the public has to know at some level who com-

mitted these horrible crimes or even needs to see who commits those horrible crimes, but once that gets out, we should not give them anymore attention other than to potentially answer the question why, when and how,’” Brauchler said.

Brauchler added an anecdote how he refused to say the name of the Aurora theater shooter more than twice during the trial.

“I want to tell you they’re never going to happen again, but I’d be lying to you and you’d know it,” Brauchler said. “It’s important that we continue to move this through as we have these other horrible things happen.”

Legend High athletic director on leave amid investigation STAFF REPORT

Legend High School’s athletic director is on leave and is being investigated by police for “potential inappropriate conduct.”

Kevin Boley is also the Parker school’s boys basketball coach, a role he assumed in 2008. He has been the AD at Legend since 2014.

Little is being divulged by officials

regarding why Boley is on leave, but brief statements were issued by the high school and the Parker Police Department.

“I am writing to share news regarding one of our staff members at LHS. Athletic Director Kevin Boley is currently on leave,” wrote Legend Principal Jason Jacob. “Please understand that I am unable to share specific details, as this is a personnel matter.”

In more recent years, the district has worked to improve its communication with parents. Paula Hans, DCSD’s public information officer, spearheaded an initiative in 2016 — in cases of a lockdown or lockout, her team must send a notification to parents within 10

minutes of being notified by dispatch.

Hans, a parent, said she’s passionate about keeping parents informed.

“Our goal is always to communicate as quickly as possible with confirmed information,” Hans said. “We want to make sure parents know that the school district is aware and handling it and involved.”

Five reasons to work skilled trades Not matter what’s happening in the business world and Wall Street, no matter how up or down the economy, an industry that will always be steady is in blue-collar and skilled trades.

This is the industry where more than 13 million workers are employed at different levels each year. This is an industry that stretches across so many areas from the plumber and carpenter to the maintenance mechanic and electrician to locomotive engineer.

The top five reasons to work in the skilled-trade industry includes:

Well-paying: According to BLS, the median salary in construction and labor work is just over $33,000 per year, about $16.08 an hour. Other positions make event more, with the minimum education being a high school diploma. Variety: If you don’t like working on the rails or specifically on a construction site, the good news is blue-collar trades expand across a variety of categories, expanding into electricity, carpentry, mechanics, maintenance, machine operators and ground maintenance.

Cheaper education: Many blue-collar jobs only require a high-school diploma to begin work.

Others, such as masonry work or auto mechanics need only to go through a trade school that caters to the specific field. This turns into a certification of completion rather than an expensive degree at a university. The costs difference in education is huge.

Job satisfaction: There is a certain sense of pride in getting your hands dirty and building, creating or maintaining something.

According to a 2018 Harris Poll, which surveyed blue-collar workers across the nation, 86 percent said they are satisfied/happy with their jobs.

VOICES World lost in selfies is not a pretty picture

A

waiter goes back to a table and asks a young couple, “Is your food OK? You haven’t taken a picture of it yet?”

When the time comes for this decade to be characterized, it will be a snap.

It was estimated that each of us takes 10 digital photos a day, or 3,650 digital photos in a year. Times the number of people who have cellphones with built-in cameras, that’s 14 trillion photos worldwide annually.

Not all of them will be saved, however, for a very good reason that I will get to momentarily.

(When I say “we” I don’t mean me too. It’s just less accusatory than saying “you.”)

the bear, I tend to side with the bear. When someone falls over a cliff while they are taking a selfie, I side with the cliff.

Every time I watch a major event on television, I see hundreds of amateur photographers aiming their phones at the event.

Why? Because these moments are precious

and few?

No. Because everyone else is doing it.

I just read an article to myself, and

then I read it to the dog to get his reaction.

Harry is used to it by now, and usually just angles his head and stares at me.

The headline in the Washington Post said, “More are seeking surgery to look better in selfies.”

There was a photo of a bunch of grinning idiots that went with the article, and the caption was, “The self-taken photograph is warping the confidence of many younger people in unsettling ways.”

I am very, very glad I am not a younger people.

The article was written by Daria Hamrah, a plastic surgeon who has a practice in McLean, Va. Hamrah said the people who now

come into her office are years younger than the ones who came into her office 10 years ago.

“There’s a reason for this radical and rapid change: selfies.”

She said one young woman came into her office and asked for “rounded feline eyes of the sort that some photo filters can add to selfies.”

When I read that to Harry, he angled his head to the other side.

“Once, a 20-year-old woman, having studied countless images of herself, said she needed a face-lift; no 20-yearold needs a face-lift.”

Harry and I both have prominent noses. (Keep in mind, he’s a dachshund.)

t seems like this statement, “People, Process and Technology,” is the go-to response for many companies and organizations when asked about how they WINNING are planning to WORDS improve or grow their business. I mean it is used so often and has been for decades, so there must be something to it, right?

Or has it become cliché, overused, and the expected Michael Norton canned response given by someone who has been asked the question about how they will grow the business or how they have achieved success?

A reminder to focus on financial literacy

he United States Senate designated April as National Financial Literacy month in 2003. This was designed to highlight the importance of financial literacy and teach Americans how to establish and maintain healthy fiFINANCIAL nancial habits.

to have all three, or maybe one dominant culture supported by subcultures within the company. None of these are bad or wrong, they just sometimes miss the people driven culture.

When challenged with this question, executives may make bold statements such as, “Our people are our most important asset.” And that is awesome, truly awesome. If it were true. Executive and leaders want to do the right thing when it comes to their people.

They are not intentionally trying to mislead anyone, and they are not maliciously or purposely trying to ignore their people. The truth is they just have to make hard decisions. We all do, don’t we? The question is, where does the compromise stop? Hopefully, we don’t compromise our people.

In the quest for a return on investment, have we forgotten about the people who truly are the essence of success for any company or organization, large or small? We can have the greatest and most efficient processes and advanced technology that will drive our improvement and growth, but if we do not have the people who are willingly engaged and bought in to the vision or the

year for the S&P 500 Index, rising 1.7 percent on average.¹ However, a higher stock market may mean nothing to millions who do not have the financial basics covered.

Here are some basic guidelines to consider for financial wellness: Build an emergency fund and keep it liquid. This helps you keep unexpected expenses off of your credit card and reduce high fees.

s the tide of bland, boxy apartment complexes rolls through metro Denver amid its housing boom, sightseers looking for a respite need not roam far.

Historic buildings offer a change of pace from “empty architecture,” said Stephen Leonard, a history professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

“We get a lot of variety from historical architecture that we have,” said Leonard, a widely known voice on Colorado history who has taught at MSU for five decades. “I think our sensibility, our ability to appreciate differences and to understand beauty would be considerably lessened if we didn’t have the variety of some very fine architecture we have in Denver.”

Paraphrasing Winston Churchill, Leonard said, “We shape our buildings, and then our buildings shape us.”

“I think they tell us a lot about the tastes of the period. You look at the flamboyance of Victorian architecture, which is really sort of a grabbag term for the 1860s-90s,” Leonard said. “Those buildings combine different styles. They sort of reflect the exuberance of a nouveau riche class.

There’s not much restraint in them.”

ELLIS ARNOLD What followed was a move away from that style, “almost a reaction against too much ornamentation,” Leonard said, “that maybe reflects a more mature country and state.”

Curious eyes can find styles from that era and beyond around the Denver region. Here’s a look at a few buildings still standing.

Westminster Bell Tower In 1986, the City of Westminster wanted to celebrate its 75th birthday with a “grand public monument,” according to city spokeswoman Jodie Carroll.

The city decided to incorporate it into the design of the new city hall, which was set to open in 1988.

The tower’s design, including the pyramid at the top, were taken from Big Ben. The city wasn’t named for the area in London, though: The area’s original name, Harris Park, was changed in the early 1900s to honor Westminster University, which was where the Belleview Christian School building now stands, Carroll said.

That’s just a few minutes southeast of the bell tower.

Enchantment grows at Chatfield Farms Denver Botanic Gardens facility always changing

More than a century ago, in 1866, pioneer Frank Hildebrand purchased 160 acres of farmland along Deer Creek for $500 — in what is now south Jefferson County. The property included a log house, according to horticulturist Jennifer Trunce, who spoke to the Littleton Garden Club about Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield Farms, the now-700-acre property adjoining Chatfield State Park and Reservoir. It was set aside after the disastrous 1965 flood, which affected a large part of the south suburban area.

The Army Corps of Engineers controls the land and declared it a floodplain where no new building is permitted. Denver Botanic Gardens was allowed to manage the land, designated as Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield. Existing buildings were grandfathered in … The original thought was to build a huge arboretum, with more varieties of trees than anywhere between Chicago and the West Coast.

Volunteers led schoolchildren through natural areas of wetlands, riparian landscape and fields, looking at native plants, birds and wildlife.

Gradually a native plant garden developed, the historic farms were restored and a variety of defined types of gardens were planted instead, creating a fine spot for families and individuals to explore — during special events or just on any day.

Frank Hildebrand, a German immigrant, was one of the first pioneers to settle in the area, and Deer Creek was the only source of water, running through the length of the property. There was a log cabin on the land when he purchased it. He and his wife, Elizabeth, raised Hereford cattle and grew vegetables and sugar beets.

The Hildebrands built a larger house around the cabin, then in 1915, a separate large farmhouse, which stands today. A milking barn and other outbuildings were added. A cutting garden is planted near it and heirloom gardens.

Son Francis Hildebrand continued with the farming and added a granary, wood and blacksmith’s shops and ice house.

Francis also moved the Deer Creek Schoolhouse onto the farm when Chatfield Dam was built — or it would have been submerged. It is used as a visitors center, for classes, for brides and programs …

The owners were evicted by the Army Corps of Engineers after the 1965 flood, as were the owners of the nearby Green Ranch, known for raising thousands of white Peking ducks, which they shipped to restaurants across the nation. The two-story, white Green House was renovated in 2016 and now holds 30 offices, Trunce said.

A Wayne Christian Garden honors the first director appointed in the 1970s to begin organizing this new operation.

Special gardens surround the farms, including the Mary Washburn Orchard and Heritage Garden. Some fields are cultivated with corn and pumpkins — see the Big Pumpkin Festival in October — and seven acres are devoted to crops for the Chatfield CSA (community supported agriculture) program, which supplies regular boxes of vegetables, fruits and flowers to subscribers and farm stands. Trunce said a new master plan is in process for this increasingly busy site. A map on the website shows the Janice Form Memorial Dye Garden, established by members of the Rocky Mountain Weavers Guild, who manage it, grow dye plants and teach how to dye yarns and fabrics. Also nearby: a cut flower garden, herb garden, prairie garden, iris garden (one of the larger collections in the nation.), plant select garden, market

garden. The large lavender garden matured enough to start holding a Lavender Festival last year, which drew a huge crowd and will be repeated.

One is allowed to bring food into the garden, so families may want to consider a summer picnic lunch at this pleasant spot.

Beyond the farms and developed gardens is a large natural area with three clearly marked trails towards the wetlands, where native plants, birds and wildlife await.

Highlands Ranch Mansion A small farmhouse built in 1891 eventually became the Highlands Ranch Mansion, a public property surrounded by historic barns, ranch houses, corrals and pastures.

“Through the years, each owner expanded the residence, adding their own style,” said Sherry Eppers, spokeswoman for the Highlands Ranch Metro District. “The unique details from different architectural periods can be found on both the exterior and interior of the building.”

The mansion was a residence until the late 1970s, and many Denver-area socialites called it home, Eppers said. Today, it’s a gathering place for celebrations, weddings and private events. The property was conveyed to the metro district in 2010.

“The mansion is a link to Colorado’s rich history,” Eppers said. “Residents enjoy learning about the history of the mansion’s families and the tradition of ranching in the area.”

SCOTT TAYLOR Blvd. was once a Catholic college. First named Loretto Heights Academy, it grew out of an effort by the Sisters of Loretto dating back to the late 1800s. Its reddish-brown administration building with a tower is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The campus became Teikyo Loretto Heights University in 1989 and Colorado Heights University in 2009. It closed around fall 2017 after an insufficient student population made it difficult to sustain the school, according to the university.

The developer who bought the property from the university, Westside Investment Partners, has announced it will renovate Pancratia Hall on the campus — once home to a dormitory — into affordable housing units, according to a January news release.

Westside has also said it is committed to preserving the administration building, the adjoining chapel and the cemetery, where dozens of nuns were interred.

The county needed a new building amid population growth. Between 1972 and 1990, the courts’ caseload increased by almost 500 percent, and services had to be scattered throughout the county, Frazier said.

“The new building provided space for almost all of the county’s operations and was designed to provide services to citizens all in one location,” Frazier said.

The large, dome-anchored building at 100 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden opened in 1993, with architecture meant to mesh with the surrounding landscape. The wheat-colored brick matches the clay in nearby terrain, and the maroon granite used was inspired by the soil and indigenous sandstone, Frazier said.

“It was designed to reflect the life and architecture of the county’s namesake, Thomas Jefferson,” Frazier said. “The central atrium of the building was styled after the rotunda Jefferson designed for the University of Virginia and also the Jefferson Memorial rotunda in Washington, D.C.” But its most interesting aspect for Frazier is its butterfly-like shape when viewed from above, and its curved “wings” makes it appear smaller than it is.

The building “was designed by the architects to create a focal point,” Frazier said, “for what is a big, diverse governmental organization.”

RTD expects 4,400 daily riders at Southeast Extension stations Two-thirds of passengers will be using line for work, forecast says

About 6,000 people use the Lincoln Station on a given weekday, according to the Regional Transportation District. On May 19, the Southeast Rail Extension will open to the public.

The future development of Lone Tree’s RidgeGate area is dependent on the opening of the Southeast Rail Extension and, conversely, the bulk of ridership for the three new stations is reliant on the current and future employees in the area.

Once the Southeast Rail Extension opens to the public May 19, the Regional Transportation District anticipates about 4,400 riders, on an average weekday, will access one of the three new stations in south Lone Tree within the first year. By 2035, RTD anticipates a ridership of about 6,600. Those numbers are projections based on the planned buildout of the Lone Tree City Center and the surrounding villages and commercial districts.

About two-thirds of those riders will be using light rail for work, according to RTD, both to and from downtown Denver and the Tech Center. RTD officials said it would be more difficult to determine exactly how many people using the rail would be residents from Lone Tree, other parts of Douglas County, or elsewhere in the Denver metro area.

RTD uses a regional travel model conducted by the Denver Regional Council of Governments to asses ridership in a given area.

“These forecasts are very dependent on the population for employment and household forecasts coming to fruition, which is hard to know,” said Lee Cryer, a project planning manager with RTD. “Several years ago, when we were making forecasts, it was thought there would already be some development of the Lone Tree City Center by the time the project opens, which there is not. Getting that ridership data is dependent on the land-use data coming to fruition.”

The regional travel model takes into consideration proximity to existing road and transit networks, such as I-25, I-70 and C-470, as well as population predictions from local jurisdictions regarding new households and employment. That includes places like Charles Schwab, the Kiewit regional headquarters and more than 12,000 housing units planned to come to RidgeGate East. Coventry Development expects the plans for RidgeGate East to bring 40,000 new jobs.

According to RTD, the city and local business associations in the southeast metro area contributed $25 million in cash and $3 million in right-of-way,

permits and other in-kind contributions for the $233 million Southeast Rail Extension project. The contribution is 9.5 percent more than the 2.5 percent match RTD asks of its local partners. RTD invested $66 million and received a $92 million federal grant and a $9 million grant.

The new stations will allow passengers access to the R line through Aurora, the commuter train to Denver International Airport and to Union Station in downtown Denver.

The current end-of-line at Lincoln Station garners about 6,000 riders on an average weekday.

Sky Ridge Medical Center will have a stop on its doorstep, the Sky Ridge Station. Sky Ridge officials said it expects both employees and patients to use the stop for easier access to the hospital. Currently the hospital has about 40 employees who rely on light rail. The hospital pays for about 80 percent of a monthly pass for its employees. Sky Ridge officials expect the number of employees using light rail to grow once the Southeast Rail Extension opens.

“We are thrilled that light rail is opening, as this gives our employees and even our patients greater flexibility to reach the campus,” said Linda Watson, Sky Ridge’s spokesperson.

“Our employees are environmentally conscious as well, so taking light rail is good for the air and provides them with a stress-free commute.”

ccording to a study recently released by Fannie Mae, more baby boomer retirees have mortgage debt than those retirees who were born between 1931 and 1935.

Many of those boomer retirees turn to a reverse mortgage to eliminate their mortgage payments as they enter retirement. While property taxes and homeowners insurance must continue to be paid, the removal of an oftensubstantial mortgage payment allows homeowners to ease the pressure of stretched financial obligations.

With less outgo comes a sigh of relief, as retirees may be able to delay taking social security until age 70, pay off high interest credit card debt, allow time for the retirement portfolio to grow, and find a myriad of other

uses for tax-free proceeds of a reverse mortgage.

Recent changes to the government insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (Reverse Mortgage) program

by HUD have reduced the amount of mortgage insurance paid annually from 1.25% to .5%.

Another group of seniors that are benefiting from a reverse mortgage are those who own their homes free-andclear. The equity, or housing wealth, available to such homeowners is often substantial, and access to a portion of those funds can be life changing!

Legend student to receive leadership award Chyanne Ferguson honored

by National WWII Museum for volunteer work, leadership STAFF REPORT

Legend High School student Chyanne Ferguson has been named a 2019 Billy Michal Student Leadership Award recipient by the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, according to a news release.

Ferguson, who completed middle school at Cimarron before moving on to Legend, earned the national award for her strong record of volunteerism, school and community activism, and creative problem solving. Ferguson will be flown to New Orleans to participate in the museum’s American

Spirit Awards program May 22-23.

The leadership award, which the museum first presented in 2017, was created in honor of Michal, a child living in Louisiana during World War II. At 6 years old, Michal helped his one-room school win a statewide scrap paper-collection contest during the war, proving that every citizen could contribute to victory. Michal’s achievement demonstrated the positive impact the American spirit could have on the home-front war efforts, and he continues to inspire students across America today.

“It’s extremely gratifying to recognize students throughout the nation for the wonderful contributions they make to their local communities,” Stephen J. Watson, president & CEO at The National WWII Museum, said in the release. “During World War II, our country needed everyone to come

together for a common goal of securing freedom and democracy around the world. Much like Billy Michal’s contribution over 70 years ago, our student honorees prove that their positive actions, no matter how big or small, can make a difference in their communities.”

Ferguson was first recognized as an eighth-grade student at Cimarron Middle School by the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the Patriots Pen Essay Award winner. She participated and helped to honor more than 175 veterans and their families that year at the schoolwide annual Veterans Day ceremony. Since then, Ferguson has continued her service and citizenship by promoting a project called Stories beyond Pause to help Veterans after returning home.

The National WWII Museum’s American Spirit Awards, presented

by Hancock Whitney, is a multiday event consisting of a patron reception, premier gala and awards luncheon and leadership forum, which is where the Billy Michal students will receive their awards. Awards recognize ELITE work of landscape companies STAFF REPORT

ELITE AWARDS

The landscaping at the Streets at SouthGlenn earned Centennial-based Sustainable Landscapes Colorado an ELITE Award for Use of Color-Judges’ Choice at the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado awards ceremony in March.

According to a news release, the company went above and beyond to create a landscape that would provide visitors a compelling “sense of arrival” year-round while also being suitable for Colorado’s dry climate.

The Elevating the Landscape Industry through Excellence Awards recognize professionalism and innovation, as well as business practices and original projects. The awards were presented March 27 at Stonebrook Manor in Thornton.

Sustainable Landscapes Colorado installed 400 hanging baskets and 40 containers (hand-watered every day late spring-fall by a crew of three), and approximately 13,000 square feet of annual and perennial beds watered with a Netafim irrigation system.

The project also was a finalist for the ELITE Award for Use of Color-People’s Choice.

Eagle’s Nest Ranch seeks to create healing bonds Horses offer relief from emotional pain for people burdened by trauma

The name Eagle’s Nest Ranch evolved from founder Suzie McKenzie’s observations that the eagle is a military symbol and a nest represents a haven for nurturing and a place from which to soar when the time is right.

Suzie McKenzie runs the nonprofit Eagle’s Nest Ranch in Elizabeth. The ranch’s mission is to connect people facing adversity and emotional trauma with horses. According to Suzie, “Spending time with the horses helps the healing begin.”

Suzie wanted to offer her services to military families and the name Eagle’s Nest resonated with her — the eagle being a military symbol and a nest representing a haven for nurturing and a place from which to soar when the time is right.

Horses are Suzie’s therapeutic animals of choice because, as she says, “They do not have an agenda but are in the moment and respond to each person according to the chemistry of the encounter and judging if they feel safe and can trust the individual. If a person is too aggressive or acting in an odd manner the horse will retreat.

This sends a loud message and behaviors change.”

Eagle’s Nest Ranch moved to a larger property last summer allowing Suzie to enlarge the program and offer services to more people.

Suzie elaborates on the program’s fundamentals in an interview with the Elbert County News.

When and how did you move to the new location happen?

We bought the land last September, drawn to all the trees and the peace and quiet. A board member at Save the Cowboy ministry felt inspired to buy the land and house the program.

How has the move benefited your program?

We now have room for more sessions, horses and an indoor arena for training. The indoor arena provides for sessions even in the heat, wind and bad weather. If it is muddy outside and the footing is bad and dangerous for the horses, we can make space inside.

How many horses do you have and how do you acquire them?

We have nine horses, some of which are adopted rescue horses. We have a secondary program, Horses in Hardship, to help horses as we do people.

We got one animal from the Cow Hand Auction and adopted Hope from Hearts of Hope in Franktown.

How do you pair up horses with a person?

I tell each newcomer the horses’ stories and allow them to work with their horse of choice. Visitors gravitate to the horse whose story resonates with them and their experiences. For instance, Starlight, is smaller, quiet and less intimidating for children. Hope however, has had medical trauma which others can understand.

What type of sessions do you offer?

The sessions are 90 minutes, and last year we had 100 sessions and hope to triple that this year with additional volunteers. We do chores first and the balance of the time is spent with one of the horses learning some horsemanship (grooming, etc.) and doing ground work. We have group sessions and one-on-one sessions which give that personal attention. Sessions will begin again in May.

How many volunteers do you currently have and is there a need for more?

The Mission Continues is a national nonprofit organization of veterans who want to continue to serve and volunteers here. The American Legion is very supportive and they have served as honor guard for our flag dedication ceremony, manned their Burger Burn to feed volunteers, and we use their facility for our Christmas cards for troops event. We have over 50 volunteers but need volunteers who can come on regular basis. We want to establish a new program called the Monday Morning Men team of retired men to help with general maintenance.

What groups do you serve and how?

We serve children from the Sun Valley Youth Center in Denver at the ranch and we have from five to 25 kids each time. We continue to serve veterans and have worked with the Denver VA Medical Center, who have brought veterans to Eagle’s Nest for two or

We will have the First Responder Buckaroo Days this summer to honor and support the first responders community which includes firefighters, police, dispatchers and all other emergency personnel. For three years, we have invited the families to the

ranch for a day of fun. Buckaroo Days are held one Saturday in June, July and August. Along with lunch, we have hay rides, outdoor games, paint the horses, horse rides, a devotional and crafts.

We are also holding our fifth an-

niversary summer celebration and concert on June 22 featuring Scott Helmer’s One-Man Rock and country show.

CCM reporter receives Public Health Hero award Tri-County Health Department honors 10 for their work in promoting and improving public health STAFF REPORT

Colorado Community Media reporter Alex DeWind, who reported a series of stories on the state of mental health in Douglas County, was honored April 9 as one of 10 recipients of Tri-County Health Department’s 2019 Public Health Hero awards.

Tri-County Health Department, which serves Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties, recognizes individuals and organizations that are not in the public health profession but have worked to improve and promote public health.

“These are people who are doing God’s work, who are not paid to do it — at least from the public health profession,” said John Douglas, Tri-County’s executive director.

DeWind was a lead reporter on a team that spent 2018

• Mitzi Schindler, director of communications for the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, and board member Aurora Health Alliance, for its strong partnership with Tri-County as an advocate for community services and programs and as a key partner on Tri-County’s Initiative for Workplace Health and Well-being.

• Dr. Kaylin Klie, a passionate advocate and invaluable resource for Tri-County’s Nurse Family Partnership staff, who works with clients struggling with substance use disorders.

• Healthy Farmer’s Market in Thornton, a collaboration among three entities that created a weekly farmers’ market in a high-need, food-desert area of Thornton. It also accepted SNAP and WIC as payment, making healthy foods accessible to a lower-income population. The recipients were community volunteer Josh Gardner, Genné Boggs of Anythink Huron Street Library and Aeron Calkins, owner of Lulu’s Farm.

andry Johnston looks comfortable when ushering players around on the soccer pitch.

Johnston is a senior at Legend High School and the student body president, so it is not surprising to see her leading and making decisions from her defensive center-back position during soccer matches.

“I actually think soccer is a little bit tougher in decision-making,” said Johnston. “You don’t have time to think about it. You do think about it but you only have a split second to do so.”

Johnston competed on the cross country team in the fall plus the track and soccer teams during the spring but still manages to have time to be a student government leader.

“Time management is the key,” she admitted. “I’m a real detailed planner.”

She is quick to point out there are differences between soccer, student government, cross country and track.

“The difference is, I don’t have to plan the reunion,” added Johnston.

“I can quit during a game. I can’t quit during a race.”

COACH’S TAKE: ‘She’s positive, always giving of herself and that’s why she’s a captain of our group.

She’s not always the most technical person or not always going to be the best player on the field but because of her heart she gives everything to her team and the team listens to her.

She is just a natural leader. She never stops or gives up on a play.’

Brie Oakley because she is just like me. She played soccer and transferred over to running. She’s an inspiration for me.

What or who motivates you most to excel in sports?

Lucy Roberts. She is also on my team, does both and she just really inspires me to do what I want to do.

What would be a perfect performance in soccer?

I like shutouts but shutouts that you really had to work hard to keep.

So not like an easy shutout but a harder one.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

Probably math because it challenges me the most.

What do you like to do away from sports and school?

Hiking and skiing with my friends.

What are your plans after high school?

I will probably either attend CU-Boulder or Texas Christian University. I haven’t decided yet. I will probably do some club sport and might try to walk on to the cross country team.

What is your feeling on the United States National Women’s Soccer team suing for equal play with the men?

If they are not getting paid the same as the men’s team and they are performing just as well, they should be getting paid the same.

Do you have any routines or habits before a game or meet?

Right before the whistle or the gun in both cross country and soccer, I have to jump three times and shake my right ankle and left ankle.

And rescheduling postponed events isn’t as easy as it might seem.

“It’s a pain,” Douglas County High School Athletic Director Jeff Gardella said about the rescheduling process.

Agreeing on OVERTIME makeup dates, obtaining umpires and officials, securing venues and working around other school functions are just a few of the details that have to be ironed Jim Benton out by coaches and athletic directors in finding makeup dates.

The latest delay caused by a spring snowstorm was April 10 and 11, which brought back memories for many people about other bad weather situations during the spring.

Most games around the area were postponed on April 10.

Boys swimming, an indoor sport, is the only one that doesn’t have to be concerned about having meets postponed by weather.

Baseball is one of the spring sports that faces complications in the event of bad weather.

“You get into league (play) like everybody is right now and you don’t want to play back-toback days because it is messing with your pitching in baseball,” Gardella said.

With the shortage of officials in sports like baseball, lacrosse and soccer, that often eliminates possible makeup dates because no officials or umpires are available.

And for lacrosse and soccer games, with several schools using districtwide stadiums, games often have to be scheduled around other games. Often, lower-level games have to be canceled rather than postponed.

Seven Douglas County School District soccer and lacrosse games were postponed on April 11 because the district doesn’t like to plow or brush snow off the artificial turf of its stadiums to avoid ripping seams and having to later redistribute rubber pellets back onto the field.

A partnership between Rocky Vista University, Special Olympics Colorado and the Denver Osteopathic Foundation helped provide free sports physicals for athletes with disabilities.

An average athlete with intellectual disabilities visits 50 physicians until he or she can find a provider able to meet their needs, Special Olympics Colorado said in a news release. As such, the first goal of the event was to increase access to quality health care for the athletes, and to do so in a fun and comfortable environment.

“We are grateful for the effort the Denver Osteopathic Foundation put into a student event with Special Olympics Colorado,” Jill Pitcher, DO, associate professor of family medicine, said in the release. “This often requires not just good sports exam skills, but some understanding of the special circumstances these athletes have in their life and how it impacts their participation in sports. Paired first-year and second-year students performed exams on 12 athletes, and

they all really enjoyed the interaction and experience they had.”

By participating in the partnership between the Special Olympics’s Healthy Athletes and the foundation’s Sports Physicals programs, Rocky Vista students and faculty members received free training on the specific care needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities, further increasing their knowledge of and compassion for these patients, the release said.

By receiving the free physicals on March 30, many athletes were cleared to participate in sports activities and competitions. In addition, the event raised awareness of the health care needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities and the importance of ongoing education and training for healthcare professionals and medical students.
