On Day One of Elaine Mariner’s job as Parker’s cultural director in 2016, then-town administrator Randy Young brought her to the locked front door of the Schoolhouse on Mainstreet.

Mariner’s job: Make the Schoolhouse a center for community gatherings once again.

In February of 2018, Mariner accomplished that. With the help of the community and town staff, the Schoolhouse was renovated to be a community gathering place and event center while preserving a piece of Parker’s history. Now that Mariner “opened the door,” the next step is inviting people in.

“I think we need to take some time to enjoy it and activate it and see what it wants to be,” Mariner said. “I’m excited to watch how the process develops and how we can help it become more activated. I’m excited to see the community’s ideas.”

The Schoolhouse renovation project launched its fourth and final phase April 1 when construction on the Schoolhouse plaza and parking lot began. The plaza, Mariner said, will be a place for public and private events — from wedding receptions to the famers market to a concession area before or after PACE Center shows. The parking

DCSD works to improve charter renewal process School board renews three charter schools

For seven months, Douglas County School District staff and legal counsel have worked together to clean up the district’s charter school renewal process, which in the past has been described by some community members as ambiguous, unpredictable and potentially detrimental to enrollment at neighborhood schools.

The Charter Schools Act — which became Colorado law in 1993 and paved the way for charters — called for “smaller environments to experiment with educational programs and develop innovative ways to educate at-risk students.” The schools receive the same per-pupil funding as public schools but generally operate with more autonomy and flexibility. In Douglas County, there are 18.

The school district’s refined contract process outlines specific parameters on dispute resolution — should there be a disagreement between the school district and a charter school — financial reporting and the district’s obligations to charter schools, according to a presentation made by district staff at an April 2 board of education meeting.

“We do believe it captures an agreement between the representatives of the school district, as well as the charter schools, with respect to the obligations and compliance with state law,” Mary Kay Klimesh, the district’s general counsel, said at the meeting.

New language is also in the works around automatic state waivers, in which charters aren’t required to submit a Rationale and Replace-

ment Plan outlining how it will comply with the objective of an automatically waived state statute or state board rule. Which, for example, could be a governing board’s duties concerning staff and pay or policies relating to in-service training and official conduct, according to the Colorado Department of Education.

“For us, we will require a rationale replacement plan,” said Danny Winsor, the district’s director of schools and choice programming.

“It has been an exhaustive process to make sure we set a good foundation moving forward and we give a lot of credit to our general counsel.”

The following are three charter school contracts that were renewed at the April 2 meeting under terms of the new contract process.

Ben Franklin Academy The board of education unanimously approved a five-year contract for the school in Highlands Ranch. The charter school, which opened in 2011, serves kindergarten through eighth grade with a focus on STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

North Star Academy The board of education unanimously approved a five-year contract for the K-8 school in Parker.

Opened in 2006, the charter school offers a core knowledge education with an integrated Spanish language program.

Hope Online The board of education voted 6-1 to approve a two-year contract for the K-12 school, which offers online instruction in learning centers throughout Colorado. The school has been under scrutiny for its rating by the state department of education as “priority improvement” for low academic achievement.

The Daniels Fund program provides four-year scholarships to students who demonstrate exceptional character, leadership and a commitment to serving their communities.

The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees, room and board, books,

supplies and miscellaneous educational expenses not covered by other grants or scholarships.

Back 40 Gun Range approved by council Parker gives green light to firing, archery facility

The Back 40 Gun Range received approval of its “use by special review” request from the Parker Town Council April 1, allowing the gun and archery range to move into the Parker Homestead neighborhood despite contention over the proposed location.

The Back 40 Gun Range will be fully constructed within 2 1/2 years from when it begins, according to the site’s applicant, Rion Buswell, a Parker resident. Following the approval of a site-area plan, the range will begin construction in the Parker Homestead neighborhood on the northwest corner of the Chambers Road and Double Angel Road intersection.

After a 4 1/2-hour meeting April 1, council approved the proposal 4-2, the two opposed coming from councilmembers Cheryl Poage and Jeff Toborg. Fifty-three people came to the lectern voicing their opinions both for and against the proposal.

There were 27 people in favor of the request and 26 opposed.

Buswell said he intends for the range to promote community as well as gun and archery education and training.

“At the end of the day, there are law-abiding citizens wanting to use the facility,” Buswell said. “Why not give them a place to feel comfortable to bring their families in, train and educate and be able to hang out and enjoy the place?”

Buswell, originally from Iowa, grew up on a 130-year-old family farm. When he left his corporate career in 2016, he looked for opportunities in Parker.

“It’s made the facility better addressing the concerns over the past years,” Buswell said. “It’s been a long journey and I do believe I’ve done as best a job I can to address those concerns.”

Those opposed to the approval of the gun range were mostly against the proposed site, which is near Double Angel Ballpark, EchoPark Stadium, several homes and is one mile north of Gold Rush Elementary.

Emily Suyat, of Parker, is opposed to the council’s decision to approve the request and said she believes the gun range will bring fear to an area frequented by young kids and teenagers. Suyat said these kids are part of “generation lockdown” and are more wary of guns.

Several local students spoke on behalf of student groups against the gun range’s location.

“Our entire point was the location is bad, and it just seems like common sense that the location is bad,” Suyat said. “There are students that testified and asked us to help them.

They asked us to protect them, and we failed them.”

Buswell said he exhausted all possible options for the gun range’s location and said the Chambers property owner was the only one willing to divide the land in the unique shape the building required. The area is zoned commercial. Some opposed to the request suggested it be moved to an area zoned industrial.

Buswell and his consultants answered many of the concerns residents had, including the possibility of worsening air quality, gunshot

sounds being heard in the neighborhood and criminals targeting the building.

The shooting range will have a rubber backstop to contain the bullets.

There is a limit on the size of bullet allowed at the gun range. Fiftycaliber bullets will not be allowed, Buswell said.

A heating, ventilation and air conditioning system will be installed in the range and will filter the air of harmful chemicals emitted from shooting. As a condition to the approval of the request, town staff required the gun range to be in accordance with applicable codes of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Environmental Protection Agency.

The Parker Police Department has stated it does not have any additional safety concerns about the gun range at this time.

“As site plans and procedures are developed and presented, we will be part of the review process along with other departments within the town and external agencies,” said Chief David King. “The safety of EchoPark and surrounding neighborhoods and all Parker residents will be of primary importance

throughout the process.”

As part of the “use by special review” request, Wave Engineering, the contracted engineering consultant on the request, found the decibel level for the area reached from 52 to 56 decibels on average. The consultant reported the Back 40 Gun Range will not exceed 45 decibels, comparing the sound being heard outside being similar to a car door shutting.

In order to be granted a “use by special review,” the applicant had to have met nine criteria. Councilmember John Diak voted to approve the request, satisfied with responses to his concerns regarding the building’s harmony with the area and the potential for air and noise pollution.

Diak said the facility would fit in to the recreational feel of the area.

“I can’t get to a denial. All my questions have been answered, and based on the criteria and question at hand, I have to support this proposal,” Diak said.

Buswell said, at this point, there’s still a long way to go.

“It’s mixed emotions at this point,” Buswell said. “Yes I’m excited it can move forward and to know it can happen, but at the same time the doors aren’t open.”

Three RidgeGate residential areas to launch in 2020 As light rail stations near opening, developer sets sights on future

Places like Monk and Mongoose Gourmet Coffee in Lone Tree are what Keith Simon calls “the holy grail” of a planned development. The coffee shop in RidgeGate has become a popular spot for residents and area employees.

The executive vice president and director of development for Coventry Development, the main developer of the RidgeGate community, said it’s those types of smaller, local businesses that he hopes to bring in abundance to Lone Tree’s budding center, just east of I-25.

New buildings in RidgeGate, like the Charles Schwab parking garage, will feature surrounding retail and restaurants. The Kiewit building, coming to RidgeGate in 2021, will also feature smaller spaces for retail and restaurants.

“We had hoped for little sprinklings of retail among the community,” Simon said. “It’s good to see those kinds of things. They’re a lot harder to do, but they make it more of a vibrant place and they create these more independent-seeming businesses that help create this sense of community.”

The Lone Tree City Center area is seen as the city’s new “downtown,” with new homes planned east and south.

of other uses for tax-free proceeds of a reverse mortgage.

Recent changes to the government insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (Reverse Mortgage) program by HUD have reduced the amount of mortgage insurance paid annually from 1.25% to .5%.

State Rep. Patrick Neville has said surviving the Columbine High School shooting in 1999 changed his life trajectory and inspired him to live in a way that honors the victims.

Patrick Neville was a 15-year-old sophomore at Columbine High School when two armed students walked into the building and killed 13 people, then themselves. He was on school grounds but outside when the shooting began, he said.

He doesn’t go into detail about what he saw and heard in those moments.

There are survivors with more compelling stories than his, he said, and the events of that day have been widely reported. Besides, recounting the story time and time again is “exhausting,” he said, particularly leading up to the massacre’s 20th anniversary.

But make no mistake: “It had a big impact on my life,” Neville said.

Today, Neville, 35, is a Republican state representative and the House minority leader. The Castle Rock resident is among Colorado’s leading voices on gun-owners’ rights and stood in

opposition to the recently passed “red flag” bill that allows firearms to be temporarily taken away from people deemed a significant threat to themselves or others.

April 20, 1999 was a blur, but it wholly changed his life trajectory, Neville said on a late-March day at his office in the state Capitol. Later in his collegiate career, at the University of Colorado Denver, it would influence his perspective on gun rights.

His most vivid memory of the day of the tragedy is of students gathering at an elementary school following the shooting. First, there was a crowd, but as buses came to evacuate them, it slowly dwindled.

Then, the father of a student asked if Neville had seen his son. Neville had not.

He’d known the father who approached him, and his son, since the third grade. The boys played baseball together and served as captains of their team as their fathers coached.

By high school, Neville was making all the wrong choices — in his words, he was a “punk.” Meanwhile, the man’s son “was making all the right decisions in life.” The two had drifted apart as a result.

“Once the names came out, he never got to see his son again,” Neville said, declining to name the father in what he called a politically-charged climate.

But that’s where the survivor’s guilt caught up with him, Neville said.

Students who were excelling died that day. It inspired the teenager to change his life course.

He would go on to serve in the U.S. Army and deploy to Iraq, which impacted his life similarly to how Columbine did. He watched families mourn lost loved ones and he buried his friends. It called to mind going to the funerals of his peers after Columbine.

Then in 2014, he became the state representative for House District 45,

Neville said he didn’t have strong opinions on gun rights until college, when he received his conceal-carry permit.

“At the time, it was illegal for me to conceal carry in my college classroom,” he said, “and if there was one place that I really felt uncomfortable or vulnerable it was sitting in a classroom.”

Colorado now allows permit holders to carry firearms on higher-education campuses.

This legislative session, Neville introduced a bill to allow someone with a concealed-carry permit to carry a firearm on public elementary, middle, junior high and high school grounds.

He believes gun-free zones enable mass shooters. Allowing certain people to carry — with extensive training, he said — could deter potential attackers.

The bill, which was voted down, was influenced by his experience at the high school and was also what reconnected him with Columbine victims.

Some in favor of the bill reached out, he said. He plans to pursue legislation opposing gun-free zones again.

In the meantime, he’s met more Columbine victims and learned more of their stories. As the public observes the 20th anniversary, it’s the lives and memories of their lost loved ones he wants people to remember.

“It’s amazing when I look back, it doesn’t seem like it was 20 years ago,” he said. “You look at the photos, and we were just little kids with such potential.”

‘Helping a brother make a last wish come true’

or Christian Redman, the Last Ride fulfilled a heartfelt wish: A celebration with his daughter in Kentucky on her 18th birthday, a reunion with fellow 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment troopers -and veterans, and a chance to once more sink his toes in the sand of a Key West beach.

“I just want to thank everybody who hleped me — I really appreciate it,” said Redman, 51, a Parker resident who is dying of the late-stage colon cancer he has fiercely fought for three years. His doctors in November gave him Ann Macari eight to 16 months Healey to live. “I never will forget it.”

Rocky Cuda, a retired sergeant from the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment — an Army unit also known as the Blackhorse Regiment — came up with the idea for a kind of make-awish last ride for Blackhorse troopers with Redman as the inaugural event.

He called it Maverick’s Last Ride after Redman’s call sign from his Army days.

The plan was for a caravan-style road trip leaving March 4 from Parker to Louisville, Kentucky, so Redman could celebrate with his daughter on her 18th birthday on March 10, then on to the Daytona Beach bike week with the final stop in Key West. There would be other stops along the way where Blackhorse troopers and veterans, on motorcyles or in cars, could join in.

Ray Simpson, a Blackhorse veteran in Colorado Springs, offered to drive Redman in his Ford pickup, pulling a 36-foot camper. Redman’s friends and local veterans set up a GoFundMe account and held fundraisers to help cover the trip’s expenses and Redman’s ongoing medical bills. As of

The Last Ride didn’t happen exactly as planned: Redman was too sick to make the road trip. But he was able to fly to Louisville to be with his daughter on her birthday. He returned home for doctor appointments, then flew to Key West on March 15, where he spent five days with Cuda, Simpson and several other Blackhorse veterans.

Simpson drove the route, meeting Redman in Louisville and Key West, and other Blackhorse veterans in Kansas City, Missouri, and Atlanta.

“This is what it was all about, helping a brother make a last wish come true,” Cuda said. “We didn’t really know if it would all work out.

However, we believed in each other and we believed that our Blackhorse family would come together and make a dream come true for one of our own …”

Since his return from Key West, Redman has been struggling. Doctors have found more cancer in his liver.

Youth JIVE job expo coming April 13 More than 50 businesses seeking workers will be at the event

The Parker Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation will host its annual Free Summer Youth Job, Internship and Volunteer Expo (JIVE) April 13 at Colorado Early Colleges in Parker. The event features more than 50 businesses looking to hire workers. More than 140 people have registered and the foundation expects several hundred to attend.

“We know that we have a huge workforce shortage across the country and what we want to do is be able to give younger folks an opportunity to figure out what they want to do, whether it’s doing technical training or going right into the workforce after college or a 4-year institution,” said Laura Tuel with the Parker Chamber. “We want to give them the opportunity to try different options at different businesses.”

The event is free to both job seekers and businesses. The event is open to people ages 14 to 25. The potential employers at the expo are targeting that age group, and all employers that have a table have positions open.

The Parker Youth JIVE event brings employers and youths looking for work together.

Employers sometimes interview and hire applicants on the spot.

“I think it’s very important because you learn a lot through

internships and jobs and it helps you throughout life,” Avalos said.

“It teaches you a lot about how you organize and talk to people and get to know people, and it’s great experience for students to learn and interact with people.”

There will be on-site interviews at the hiring booths as well. Ent Credit Union is one of the sponsors for the event. Bree Shellito, the manager of the community education department, said this event provides an opportunity to bring everybody together to work on the problem of a low youth workforce rate.

“Ent in particular takes young professionals very seriously and we want to make sure we have a young concept coming in for our workforce,” Shellito said.

Dr. Alex Tuel, of Colorado Early Colleges, sees this as a unique offering for a range of professions and levels. Jobs are available for anyone from high schoolers to college graduates.

“I think this is one of a kind opportunity in Parker,” Alex Tuel said. “I always see it as a great opportunity to get students real-world experiences that could benefit them down the road. Our school, we have high academic rigor, which is something I’m appreciative of, but on the flip side of that is getting students in the workforce in a field they may want to pursue down the road.”

Remembrance events planned STAFF REPORT

Jeffco Public Schools and Columbine High School — in partnership with the Columbine Memorial Foundation, Waterstone Community Church, Foothills Park and Recreation District-Clement Park, and The Rebels Project — will hold several community events to honor and remember the victims of the April 20, 1999 Columbine tragedy. Sylvan moves to Lone Tree office, plans more sites in county STAFF REPORT

Sylvan Learning recently opened its first Lone Tree center, providing a more central site with easier access for Douglas County families, Mark Bellestri, owner of Sylvan Learning, said in a news release.

“There are so many other activities and retail stores, and our families are finding it a great place to be,” Bellestri said in the release. “Moms and dads can do more and get more done while their students are at the center.”

n the Denver metro area suburbs, the person who oversees a city or town’s dayto-day operations is not the mayor or another elected official. It is the city manager.

The city manager — or town manager or town administrator, depending on where you live — is appointed by the city or town council. The manager is then tasked with implementing policy decisions made by the council.

He or she can also be fired by the council.

Hard work staying afloat in a sea of fraud

N

ot too long ago, one of our newspaper employees received what looked like an urgent email from the company publisher. He needed some prepaid gift cards, totaling hundreds of dollars, and needed them quick.

The employee went across the street and bought the prepaid cards, eager to help out the boss.

Luckily, that’s as far as things went.

The email had been a sham, faked by a computer-savvy scammer.

By now, we’re all aware of the scam in which a supposed Nigerian prince is quite eager to share his great wealth with you, if only you’d give him a down payment, or at least your bank account

OUR VIEW number and a few personal details.

But those easy-to-spot scams are old news. Nowadays, there are countless newer and more complex con jobs out there, looking to snag even the smartest of us. Email scams look more and more legit, just asking us to click one innocuous link. Sneaky hidden devices are attached to neighborhood ATMs and gas pumps, attempting to skim credit card information.

Fraudsters can be downright brazen.

Recently, Jefferson County investigators found that scammers were making it look as if their calls were originating from the sheriff ’s department, and

used names of real deputies to try to appear legitimate.

The scary truth is that scammers don’t even have to trick you directly any more.

On Jan. 4, thieves broke into a storage facility and stole personal information of more than 500 people, including addresses, dates of birth and medication lists from the CVS pharmacy inside Target at 5071 Kipling in Wheat Ridge. That data breach, of course, is dwarfed by the constant stream of data-hacking scandals we hear about constantly. Recently, news broke that your Facebook password is likely compromised. Go change it now, if you haven’t.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR We should vote on it A few years ago, the Town of Parker held focus groups/surveys to determine how Salisbury Park should be developed. Since it involved a tax increase, it had to go to voters, who turned down concept. Now the town is using same process and taking a small percentage of public input to determine what downtown/Pine should look like. Using this input from 2 percent of residents, it will probably move forward with their predetermined plans.

A movement is in place asking town council to put this important issue to a vote of the residents.

Like many development issues in the town, it is about money and not desires of community. Traffic is already a big concern and developing the east part of downtown will only enhance the problem. Granted, we live in a democratic society and elect individuals to make decisions for their community but is a 2 percent sampling fair assessment of needs?

Is the town council afraid to ask voters their desire to prevent what happened with Salisbury? Put our future to vote!

against “unreasonable search and seizure.” Second, the law could violate the Fifth Amendment, which protects from being deprived of property “without due process of law.” Third, the law could violate the Sixth Amendment, which provides the accused with the right to confront their accuser face to face. And fourth, the law could violate the 14th Amendment, which makes the Fifth Amendment apply to the states in regard to depriving a person of their property without due process of law.

Due process of law protects all people from malicious behavior, as with a vindictive ex-spouse or partner, or a disgruntled neighbor. This law puts the burden of proof upon the accused and not upon the accuser, which is contrary to our practice of Common Law. You are to be considered innocent until proven guilty.

There are plenty of methods other than firearms that a dangerous person can use to harm themselves or others should they be determined to do so. This is where better laws and more resources are needed to help the mentally unstable.

Our entire community grieves when confronted with senseless and evil acts of violence. Is the solution to deprive citizens their right to due process under the law? That is truly a slippery slope.

It’s a small thing, and looks like an instruction Craig Marshall pamphlet for your Smith coffee maker. It’s actually a reprint of the original, first published in England in 1880, when its price was one shilling.

In the absence of fatherhood, I have missed out, because my little book is filled with things I could have told the little brats not to do.

“Don’t play the accordion, the violin, the piano, or any musical instrument, to excess.”

Many of the don’ts sound like they were written for one of David Letterman’s Top Ten lists.

“Don’t multiply epithets and adjectives; don’t be too fond of superlatives. Moderate your transports.”

The table of contents includes don’ts “At Table,” “In Dress and Personal Habits,” “In the Drawing

Room,” “In Public,” “In Speech,” “In General,” and one that I will save for later: “Affectionately addressed to Womankind.”

My favorite “Don’t” song is “Don’t” by Elvis. Coming in second is “Honey, Don’t” —originally sung

by Carl Perkins. Near the top, are “Don’t Hang Up,” by the Orlons, and “Don’t Think Twice” by Bob Dylan.

If you plan to play “Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult for me, you’d better bring a cowbell.

My least favorite “Don’t” songs are “Don’t It Make Your Brown Eyes Blue?” by Crystal Gayle and “Don’t Sleep in the Subway,” by Petula Clark.

We know that “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry” either.

Islands of success don’t all have palm trees

or some of us an island of success immediately conjures up the idea of living on a tropical paradise somewhere, removed from our worries and obligations, and living without debt or drama.

We imagine ourselves on white WINNING sandy beaches, WORDS warm ocean breezes, enjoying island delicacies and sipping tropical drinks. And for others this dream has already become a reality.

However, there is another island of success. It’s Michael Norton the island we can place ourselves on as we separate ourselves from the crowd and elevate ourselves from the pack.

In the pursuit of success, it is our ability to see life and opportunities differently and break away from the deafening noise that surrounds us each day. I have had the benefit of speaking with and learning from many wise and successful mentors

Otherwise, one cannot think beyond the noise.” The noise is everywhere and sometimes the demands on our lives intense.

To rise above the noise and the demands we must find time to be, to think, and to dream. In a world where stress and being stretched too thin drives us to work harder and not smarter, achievers have figured out that creating an island of success comes from their moments of peace and solitude.

So where can we find these islands of success? Some find it on walks along the beach, a hike in the mounsonal information.

• Hang up/delete. If you have any doubt about a call or email, ignore it. Hang up on all robocalls immediately. Never click on a link or open an attachment from an email from a sender you don’t trust. Delete any email that looks even the least bit suspicious.

• Use a credit card when it’s an option. Whether at the pump, or making an online purchase, credit card companies offer anti-fraud protection that a check, money order or a debit card does not.

Others find it in their commute to work, using the time for reflection and processing. Some make it a conscious habit of waking up early, earlier than others in their home, and find time each morning to simply be, think, and dream.

We cannot underestimate the power of solitude and peaceful moments when it comes to finding our passion and igniting or creativity.

When we think about what Thomas Edison or Pablo Picasso said about solitude, we see where our best thinking and our greatest works are achieved. Our job along the journey towards our own success is to rise above the noise and demands to find our island and build in time for ourselves along the way. This is not

selfish or to be considered an act of selfishness as the more time we can spend thinking and doing great works, the more likely it is that the outcome will be of significant benefit to others in our lives personally and professionally. We become difference makers in this world.

Studies show being outdoors reduces stress, depression and anxiety

fter graduating college, Travis Wild soon found that spending time in the mountains and on trails in Colorado gave him a place to reconnect with himself and restore his mind.

“For me, the outdoors are how everything is supposed to be without influence of problems,” Wild said, adding that nature has been the steady support in his life through rough times.

When he was diagnosed with testicular cancer almost five years ago, at age 26, Wild turned to nature to destress and cope with the difficult situation. The diagnosis came when he was changing jobs, changing relationships and mourning the loss of his grandmother.

“Outside was a place that I could go to step back and be in control a little more,” Wild said. “I got to feel normal again. Sometimes it was the only thing I had to look forward to.”

Now, Wild lives on the road, having turned his passion for outdoor space and adventure into a career as an

Wild is not alone when it comes to feeling improved mental health in the outdoors.

with depression.

“As a psychologist, when we’re trained we don’t talk about things like being outdoors as an intervention,” said Benjamin Miller, a psychologist on the board of Mental Health Colorado. “But when you think about the exposure to nature, there’s no surprise that it can decrease some symptoms of anxiety and depression.”

“One of the really interesting things this study shows is that nature contact during the workday leads to lower stress and higher job satisfaction,” Miller said.

In addition to being surrounded by nature, Miller said the practices that come with it help to improve mental health.

“We are we able to rest our minds and be present and focus on the moment,” Miller said.

In 2018, 55 percent of visitors to Jefferson County Open Space parks and trails said they saw the outdoor space as adding extreme benefit to their emotional wellbeing, ranking it fourth on a survey that measured the benefits of open space.

Last year, an estimated 7 million people visited the 56,000 acres of preserved land, 28 parks and 244 miles of trail in the Jeffco Open Space park system.

“We all knew it in our hearts, but to see it on paper was impactful,” said Mary Ann Bonnell, visitor services manager for Jeffco Open Space. “We now understand that people implicitly come to our parks for emotional wellbeing.”

This was the first time the survey, conducted last in 2011, measured this metric.

The next step, Bonnell said, is to protect visitor experience as best -as possible. That means preserving a quiet park and trail, so those who want to connect with nature can.

Jeffco Open Space has an amplified music regulation as well as a drone ban and leash law.

“I know these seem tangential, but it’s respecting the experience people are having outdoors,” Bonnell said.

Development is expected to begin as early as 2020. The release stated the city center will serve as the new “downtown” for Lone Tree, centered around the Sky Ridge Station and mixed-use, transit-oriented development.

Three residential villages will be created on the east side of I-25 in RidgeGate beginning in 2020.

The Southwest Village near the RidgeGate Station and Schweiger Ranch will be the first residential village to begin construction. The Couplet District, along RidgeGate Parkway, will feature a major grocer and will serve as a local marketplace for the new villages. Well in the future, development of the Central Village, just southeast of the CU South Denver campus, the Southeast Village and the Lincoln Avenue Commercial District, will fill out Lone Tree’s east side.

The villages will feature “civic amenities, retail and restaurants and support a walkable village environment,” the release states.

Simon said they are creating a “complete community,” integrating a broad mix of residential, retail, restaurants, office spaces, hotels, civic centers and parks and open space.

“We are looking for placemaking and thoughtful urban design to be a hallmark of the continued development on the east side of I-25,” Simon said in the press release. “This means

creating diversity and walkability with mixed-use districts, and vibrancy with parks and plazas for outdoor movies, farmers’ markets and other community events.”

The Sky Ridge, Lone Tree City Center and RidgeGate stations will officially open for public use May 19.

The development of the city center, between Sky Ridge and RidgeGate Parkway, will serve as the “hub” of the activity for the area with 32 city blocks of development planned around it.

Mayor Jackie Millet said the city is excited about the development opportunities that will contribute to the city’s reputation as a “premier Colorado community,” according to the release.

“Lone Tree and RidgeGate have demonstrated what can be accomplished when a municipality and a community developer collaborate to achieve their goals,” Millet said in the release. “In just 15 years, RidgeGate has enhanced the quality and character of our community with expanded employment, retail, recreational and cultural amenities.”

One of the keys to RidgeGate’s fastpaced development has been its ability to attract major, diverse employers like Sky Ridge Medical Center and Charles Schwab, Simon said. Kiewit, a major construction and engineering

Three new neighborhoods will begin development around the Lone Tree City Center Station and RidgeGate Station and will take decades to complete. Here are the development plans for RidgeGate East by the numbers, obtained from Coventry Development Corp.: 12 million square feet of office, retail and hospital/medical space 12,000 homes 600 acres of parks, trails and natural habitat 40,000 new jobs 350 units of attainable housing 145 acres donated for civic facilities and public schools company, recently announced plans to bring its regional headquarters to RidgeGate by 2021, adjacent to the Sky Ridge Station. The company plans to employ 1,100 workers.

“We’re in it for the long term, so we want to make sure it is very high-quality, lasting and somewhat timeless.

That’s what it’s always been about,” Simon said. “It’s a little higher density than what you would find in the suburbs because we really think the time is right for it in the suburbs, and this has proven it true, what’s happening here.”

ante Delgado started to play lacrosse because of peer pressure.

The Douglas County senior is the leading goal scorer on the team and the early season goals leader in the Douglas County League this season.

“I’ve played lacrosse for five years,” said Delgado. “I saw my friends playing it when I was in eighth grade so I thought I would give it a try and it just stuck. The sport is getting big now. I used to play football. I played football for about 10 years but I was too small. I didn’t like it as much.”

Delgado, a midfielder, likes the scoring aspect of the game.

“You just have to get open, look for the open man and take a shot and hopefully it goes in,” he explained.

“If it doesn’t go in, just keep your head up and keep going. You have to have a lot of accuracy and lot of practice with your shots.”

‘I played football for about 10 years but I was too small. I didn’t like it as much.’

COACH’S TAKE: ‘He’s a good kid with a good head on his shoulders and the team feeds off that energy. He’s definitely been the recipient of a lot of goals. He’s accustomed to scoring. It’s not his first rodeo by any means.’

Q&A with Dante Delgado Who is your favorite athlete (past, present, pro or college) and why?

John Elway of the Denver Broncos. My dad likes him a lot. I just like the Broncos and he was a real good quarterback and won two Super Bowls. And I used to play quarterback.

What or who motivates you most to excel in sports?

My dad (Myron). He grew up playing sports. He got me to play football. He didn’t get me to lacrosse although he says he wished he had. He is always helping me out and wishing me the best.

What would be a perfect performance in your sport?

Three goals, three assists. You want to make sure you have a nice even amount.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

English. I have always liked writing essays and researching papers.

What are your plans after high school?

I am going to CSU-Pueblo and walk-on to play lacrosse. I’m going there for business.

What is your most memorable moment in high school athletes?

My first lacrosse goal my sophomore year. I still can remember it. I was right on crease, someone passed it and I just banged it home. It was against Eaglecrest.

How important is controlling ground balls in lacrosse?

You always have to be aggressive. You have to get in there, don’t worry about getting hit or pushed around. You just have to go after the ball.

ocal products Mallory Pugh and Lindsey Horan, members of the U.S. women’s soccer team, joined an impressive assembly of people on April 3 when they each accepted Denver Challenge Coins and personalized street signs from OVERTIME Denver mayor Michael B. Hancock.

A Denver Challenge Coin is the equivalent of the key to the city. Only 30 people have received a Challenge Coin from Jim Benton Hancock and some of those people include Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

Others who have been honored include John Elway, former Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Chauncey Billups, Stevie Wonder and local military servicemen and women and firefighters.

Pugh, the 20-year-old who played with Real Colorado and for three seasons at Mountain Vista High School, is the youngest American to play and score as an 18-year-old in the Olympic Games. She plays for the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League.

Horan, 24, played club soccer for the Colorado Rush and graduated from Golden High school, but did not play soccer for the school. She was the first American female soccer player to sign a professional contract directly out of high school with Paris Saint-Germain. She has played pro soccer since 2012 and is currently on the Portland Thorns’ roster.

Pugh and Horan were in town with the national team for a friendly match on April 4 against Australia at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The game was one of the countdown matches for the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer.

The Americans rallied to notch a 5-3 victory and Pugh came in as a sub and scored twice to spark the USA win.

Six high school and college students are receiving scholarships from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Arapahoe and Douglas counties for their exemplary dedication and commitment to important work in the behavioral health field.

The scholarships will be presented at the Behavioral Health Seeds of Hope Scholarship Awards Event on Thursday, April 25, from 6-8 p.m. at the Hilton Denver Inverness, 200 Inverness Drive W., near Centennial.

The event is open to the public.

The societal stigma associated with mental health and illness remains the biggest impediment to people for seeking and getting the proper medical care.
