‘Food will come here … no matter what’ Parker food banks prepare for surge, maintain operations

Parker food banks have seen an increase in demand since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Denver area, and are preparing for greater demand to come.

Southeast Community Outreach Cares (SECOR) has seen at least 2.5 times more traffic than average at its Parker-based free food market, executive director Dennis Gorton said.

SECOR closed its main entrance to the public, but Gorton said they will never stop serving food.

“Food will come here and we will be a distributor through the coronavirus time period no matter what,” Gorton said.

SECOR volunteers pride themselves on being warm and friendly, but since have had to adjust to no-contact dropoffs and mass packing weekly food kits.

Each person who enters the building has his or her temperature taken.

SECOR volunteers bring bags of food out to individuals in their cars and pack a cart-full, about six bags, of food in each person’s trunk. Volunteers do not pack items into a person’s backseat because it’s not six feet away from the driver, Gorton said.

SECOR NEEDS REFRIGERATED TRUCKS

Southeast Community Outreach Cares (SECOR), the Parker-based food bank that serves Aurora, Parker and south metro communities, is seeking several refrigerated trucks or trailers to store at the facility to store food.

SECOR does not need anything to put on the road but needs more room to temporarily store items. SECOR has a lot of access to fresh food, said Mark Heistand, operations director for SECOR, but has run out of storage room for fresh items.

Anyone who is interested in loaning a refrigerated truck, trailer or mobile refrigerator unit is asked to contact Heistand at 720-425-8972 or mark@secorcares.com.

Each cart is about 90% of a family of five’s grocery needs for one week.

The bags include peanut butter, bread, chips, crackers, rice, beans, cereal, nuts, meat, fruits, vegetables and canned foods. Families with specific food needs can call ahead to request it.

Cars begin lining up at SECOR’s free food market, at 17151 Pine Lane in Parker, at about 8 a.m., an hour before it opens. The line eventually reaches the entrance and a Parker police officer patrols the lot during SECOR’s hours to make sure cars don’t spill onto Pine Lane.

SECOR has served about 300 to 400 people each day it’s been open since March 18. SECOR is open Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and

Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On March 25, amid another bustling operation with more than 1,000 family food packages ready to go, Gorton said they may need to start opening on Tuesdays as well. SECOR began serving families every week instead of every two weeks, as it usually does.

“Everything is changing so fast, and it seems to be working,” Gorton said.

SECOR does some deliveries. They made about 35 in one week to certain families. Pet food is available Gorton said SECOR has enough volunteers, though he has had to ask volunteers in at-risk groups to stay home. As a result, many newer volunteers, including high school students, have stepped up.

The Parker Task Force is waiting for the big wave as well. As one of the few food banks that also offers financial assistance, Parker Task Force has received a flood of interest from people throughout the Front Range, and volunteer chairman Steve Budnack said it may only be the beginning.

“In the weeks to come, it’s going to be dramatically increased,” Budnack said. “We don’t know what tomorrow is going to hold. As this thing evolves, we will evolve with it.”

The Parker Task Force provides food and some financial assistance to families living in Parker, Elizabeth or Franktown. Budnack said he has coordinated with the Town of Parker and Parker Police for direction on how the task force can be best utilized.

Parker Task Force has also employed a drop-off system at its location, 19105 Longs Way, trying to stick to its free-choice model as much as possible. People can call from the parking lot for items they need, volunteers will package it and bring it out to them without getting out of their cars.

Budnack said he is taking every precaution to keep his volunteers safe.

In addition to enforcing the socialdistancing and no-contact drop-off rules, the building was professionally cleaned.

In the next few weeks, when rent and utility bills are typically due, Budnack expects a wave of phone calls from people throughout Denver.

Douglas County schools begin offering free lunch, breakfast District program runs Monday through Friday for all children

On the first day the Douglas County School District offered free meals to children during coronavirus-spurred school closures, Jen Peifer, manager of operations for the district’s Nutrition Services department, did not know if she should expect 10, 100 or 1,000 children.

The global pandemic is causing unprecedented ripple effects throughout society, including the closure of districts to in-person learning, creating potential barriers for children who depend on schools for reliable and nutritious meals.

That’s why DCSD, like numerous districts in the state, has arranged to provide children with free breakfast and lunch during the closure of its facilities.

Peifer and her team prepared more than 800 lunches for the program’s launch on March 23 but would need to assess the demand as the week played out, she said.

“We have no idea if that’s enough, or too many,” she said.

the four locations throughout the county and tell a district employee how many children need meals. The employee then hands families the sack lunches and a breakfast for the following morning, without anyone needing to exit his or her vehicle.

Those within walking distance of locations can also walk up to the stations.

The district will continue providing meals until schools reopen. As of March 24, schools were scheduled to be closed through at least April 17.

If schools are shuttered for the remainder of the school year, as has happened in Kansas, the meal service will keep rolling until DCSD transitions to its annual summer lunch program, which runs similarly.

Peifer said the community needs to support students at this time. About 10% of the district’s 68,000 students receive free or reduced meals.

“I think Douglas County if often looked at as a really wealthy school district and everybody on the top of their heads assumes that families will be fine,” Peifer said. “There are still significant pockets of hunger in this district and families that are struggling.”

Parents who picked up meals at South Ridge Elementary School in Castle Rock, one of the four locations in Douglas County, said the meal service brought them peace of mind.

For Jennifer Truhler, a Castle Rock mother of four, including three school-age children, the pandemic’s economic fallout has made life tough in numerous ways. An assistant manager for Not Your Daughter’s Jeans at the Outlets at Castle Rock, Truhler is currently out of work.

The outlet mall closed through at least March 30 to help slow the virus’ spread. Truhler has a paycheck through the week of March 23 but does not know if she’ll be paid the following week.

“It’s hard. It’s hard not knowing what’s going to happen next month or even next week,” she said.

Truhler has not applied for unem-

ployment. She does not want to unless she’s certain she is permanently losing her job, she said. Her husband is in the military but stationed in Texas. He helps as much as he can, Truhler said, but she largely feels like a stay-at-home mother.

Were it not for the district’s meal program, she’d be spending more money on food than usual and worrying about emptied-out grocery stores, she said.

Cindy Fishell had similar concerns. One of the most alarming parts of the pandemic for her family is going grocery shopping once a week, only to find many empty shelves.

“There’s nothing there,” she said.

“Cleared out. I was shocked. I’ve never seen an aisle so empty.”

Bread, chicken, soup and nonperishables were popular items at King Soopers, Sprouts Farmers Market and Sam’s Club, she said. The district’s food program helped ease some of her worries.

“I thought it was a great idea,” she said of the meal program. “Mostly because there’s a lot of needy people this time of year.”

South Ridge Elementary School Principal Erin Carlson was excited to selected as a location for the meal program.

The school is walking distance for many district families and a closeknit community, which she hoped would make families feel comfortable picking up meals. They prepared 200 meals to hand out on March 23, she said.

“We are the only school,” she said of the program’s locations, which also include apartments and parks.

“We have the highest number of students on free and reduced lunch.

And because we’ve also hosted the summer feeding program here in the past, it just allows easy access for our community where they may not have transportation to another location.”

About 40% of the school’s 600 students receive free and reduced meals, Carlson said. She hopes the program serves them well.

“It’s just really important for our kids,” she said. “You just never know what these families are going through.”

Distance learning places new pressures on teachers, parents

On March 24, Ava Bray was excited to work on school assignments after the Douglas County School District’s spring break ended — and even more excited to be doing so from Florida.

The 7-year-old was visiting her grandparents in St. Petersburg when the district announced all schools would temporarily close to in-person learning amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Kristen Sortman, Ava’s mother, saw the closure as an opportunity for Ava to spend more time with her grandparents while still keeping up with school, and quickly planned for her to stay an additional week.

Paul Bray, Ava’s grandfather, said both he and his wife work remotely and were ready to help Ava as she took on learning remotely as well.

“It’s a little bit challenging,” Ava said. “It feels kind of weird but it’s fun.”

The Brays and their teenage son take turns helping Ava with her schoolwork while soaking up the extra time with their granddaughter, Paul Bray said.

“Anytime we can get with her is a blessing,” he said. “We’re just very grateful. So many people can focus on the negatives in the world we live in today, and we’re grateful thanks to technology that you can stay current and advance.”

‘New to all of us’ Ava is just one of the 68,000 Douglas County School District students undergoing a massive transition to remote learning. The switch took place on March 23 with a teacher work day, followed by the first assignments on March 24, and will last through April 17 at least, when schools are currently expected to reopen.

Superintendent Thomas Tucker, at the helm of the state’s third largest district, said the COVID-19 pandemic is forcing the country’s public school system into extraordinary circumstances.

“This is new to all of us,” Tucker said. “There are 13,500 public school districts in America. Watching those school districts shift from a majority brick-and-mortar environment to now an online environment, it’s truly fascinating and it’s really daunting.”

Tucker worked as a superintendent in 2009 during the H1N1 outbreak, which infected 60.8 million people in the U.S. during the year after it was first detected. Still, the fallout of that crisis is nowhere near the magnitude of COVID-19, Tucker said.

Plans to carry out DCSD’s switch to remote learning began before spring break. Chief Technology Officer Gau-

“From a technology perspective, you’re always excited to help people with new technology. It’s just been a wild ride through to try and get thousands of people to do it at the same time,” Sethi said.

The district has provided 50 hotspots to families that either did not have an internet connection or did not have a fast enough connection to support an entire family living and working from home.

The department also helped families test their connection if they weren’t sure it was strong enough.

Sethi said the department plans to hand out about 25 additional hotspots the week of March 30. The efforts were slowed temporarily by the governor’s stay-at-home order announced March 25, which was later amended, allowing K-12 schools to continue facilitating meals and distance learning for students.

As of March 25, the district had handed out more than 600 Chromebooks to families. Sethi anticipated providing an additional 400 to 500 the following week. Meeting demand, he explained, is an on-going process. Every day the district is receiving a few hundred requests from families.

“The remote learning is reaching into their houses and they are realizing they need more technology,” he said.

Both he and Tucker said the district’s 2018 bond measure is funding technology needs for students and teachers and the district has the financial means to keep pace with demand.

“I believe we have the basic resources, the basic physical resources, in place to ensure that our students, each of our 68,000 students, receive a free and appropriate public education.

Obviously, that is going to take a lot of coordination,” Tucker said.

Changing education School board President David Ray recalled people comparing their reaction to the school closures with what someone feels during the stages of grief — denial, negotiation, anger and finally acceptance.

“I think for all of us it was just first of all, shock, in terms of realizing that the way we’ve been doing business, we have to do that differently now,” he said.

Parker Adventist braces for surge Hospital accepting donations of personal protective equipment

Parker Adventist Hospital has plenty of masks, gowns and gloves, but doctors, nurses and staff are working harder than ever preparing for the unknown.

Dr. Devin Bateman, chief medical officer at Parker Adventist Hospital, said the hospital is bracing for the worst of the COVID-19 outbreak to reach the Denver suburbs.

“We know it’s going to happen,” Bateman said on March 25, “but it hasn’t hit us yet.”

The hospital has tested people with COVID-19 symptoms. Only those needing hospital admission are being tested currently.

Many doctors are anticipating COVID-19 patients will at some point take up 50% of hospital beds and intensive care units.

Elective procedures, non-emergency surgeries scheduled in advance, have been postponed to free space. The hospital has about 30% fewer patients than is typical.

Parker Adventist and other Centura Health hospitals are moving to mitigation strategies, meaning they

Health care experts throughout Denver are preparing for a surge in COVID-19 patients. Douglas County instituted a stay-at-home order March 25, allowing only essential businesses to remain open. Social distancing of at least 6 feet is recommended for anyone in public. Tri-County Health reports Douglas County COVID-19 cases are on the rise.

This is just the beginning, Bateman said.

“It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” he said.

The hardest part is not knowing how bad Parker’s surge will be or how long it will last.

“We don’t know the instances or prevalence of coronavirus in our community. We have an idea of what to expect from other countries and other states…but we don’t truly know what our community prevalence is

because there’s a limit to the number of testing kits available, and the tests take time to turn around,” Bateman said. “It’s tough not knowing exactly how widespread this is throughout the community.”

Centura hospitals are accepting donations of personal protective equipment (PPE). Centura hospitals are only accepting boxed N95 and surgical masks, packaged gowns and gloves and medical face shields.

Bateman said the hospital encourages donations.

Per guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Centura hospitals do not consider homemade masks official PPE and should only be considered as a last resort, according to a March 24 news release. However, Centura is accepting homemade mask donations and want to hear from people eager to donate. Email CovidDonations@ Centura.org to receive a pattern and material specifications in the event its current policy changes and the hospital begins accepting them, the release states.

“We have to be conscientious of our supply and aware of our supply. We want our people in the hospital to feel safe, but the reality across the world and in Denver is hospitals need to be careful to conserve and preserve those supplies as much as possible,” Bateman said.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office hit by COVID-19 cases Three sheriff’s office employees have tested positive for the virus

COVID-19 may be shuttering businesses and closing public gathering spaces throughout the state and Douglas County, but as more and more people are asked to stay home, law enforcement must continue patrolling the streets.

As sheriff ’s deputies continue to provide services and maintain order throughout the county, they are also working to prevent themselves from contracting the virus and spreading it to their families or other residents.

As of March 24, at least 25 people were out sick from the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, Sheriff Tony Spurlock said. Two deputies and one civilian have tested positive for COVID-19. Some of the other deputies and employees out sick are also showing symptoms of the virus but haven’t

yet been tested, he said.

“It is something that we took very seriously,” Spurlock said. “We immediately took precautions to make sure people who were sick were separated from each other and cleaned their area.”

Two of the people who tested positive for the virus have recovered and are preparing to return to work, he said. An additional 30 sheriff ’s office employees are working from home, either because they are vulnerable to the virus or because their job can be done from home, he said.

“We had a couple days where we were concerned because we had a lot

of people call in sick,” he said. “Our deputies put themselves in harm’s way quite often and this just increases it.”

The risk for patrol deputies is particularly high because they travel throughout the community and interact with people, he said.

One way the sheriff ’s office is working to mitigate that risk is by screening calls that come through their dispatch center. If a deputy is going to need to enter a resident’s home, they’re asking occupants a variety of questions first. Is there someone in the house with a fever? Has anyone been sick in the last 72 hours?

They are also providing personal protective equipment, such as gloves and masks, for the deputies to wear at their own discretion. These supplies are limited, however.

“I can’t tell you how long that’s going to last,” Spurlock said.

Because these items aren’t reusable, it is easy to run through them quickly.

The office has applied to receive more equipment from the state and has even placed orders directly with manufacturers.

Deputies are also attempting to limit contact during traffic stops by taking a photo of the person’s driver’s license or insurance card instead of taking it from the person, Spurlock said.

Inside the offices in Castle Rock and Highlands Ranch, many meetings have been transitioned to video conferences to encourage social distancing. When a meeting is in person, only five people are in the room at a time, Spurlock said.

While there may be an increased risk of illness for his deputies, Spurlock emphasizes that his office is still “getting the work done.”

“You can still get a speeding ticket in Douglas County,” he said.

Twelve firefighters with South Metro Fire Rescue have been ordered to self-isolate for 14 days after two firefighters tested presumptive positive for COVID-19, the agency said March 25.

The two firefighters who tested positive are recovering at home, according to a news release. The other 10 firefighters who came into contact with them have been ordered to self-isolate in accordance with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Additionally, if there are any other direct exposures that are found from individuals, citizens and/or patients who have come in direct contact with any of our SMFR personnel who have tested positive for COVID-19, we will be making appropriate notifications,”

Legislators urge county to cut ties with Tri-County Health Agency’s stay-at-home order has been rescinded, but lawmakers’ request stands

In a letter addressed to the Douglas County commissioners, legislators who represent the county at the state Capitol have urged the board of commissioners to end its contract with the Tri-County Health Department after the agency issued a stay-at-home order on March 25.

The letter, signed by six Republican lawmakers, calls the order a “heavy-handed application of governmental power.”

While Tri-County’s order — aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19 — has since been rescinded and replaced by a statewide measure, state Sen. Chris Holbert, of Parker, and state Rep. Patrick Neville, of Castle Rock, said the request in the letter still stands.

“An unelected bureaucrat jumped in front of our county commissioners and our governor and that’s just wrong,” Holbert said. “That’s not how a representative republic is supposed to work.”

Holbert says while he personally agrees with the stay-at-home measure, he disagrees with the fact that it was decided without the full support of the three-member board of county commissioners. The commissioners are Lora Thomas, Abe Laydon and Roger Partridge.

“What we were frustrated with was that (Tri-County Executive Director John Douglas) is not an elected official and our understanding (was) that two of the three commissioners did not support the order,” Holbert said. “Because we are a representative republic, our perspective is that it should have been respected.”

In addition to Douglas County, TriCounty serves Adams and Arapahoe counties, giving the agency a coverage area of about 1.5 million people.

Under state statute 25-1-506, a public health board has the right to declare direction such as the stay-athome order.

Neville however, has voiced disapproval of the order overall.

“This (order) is outrageous and will only lead to less social distancing as people panic buy,” according to a tweet from Neville.

Neville found it “absolutely outrageous,” that a “board of bureaucrats” would impose such an order, he said in an interview.

“If I had proposed a bill that did the exact same thing in the Legislature, there would be a long, drawnout process, there would be public

Instead, there was a more informal understanding.

Commissioner Lora Thomas said she didn’t have adequate time or metrics to get on board with the stay-at-home order.

“I just felt I needed more discussion,” she said. “I did not have enough information to justify in my mind the freedoms we were taking away from our citizens.”

Thomas said she will consider ending the county’s relationship with the health department but not during the current crisis.

“I know there will be a discussion eventually about what best serves the needs of our community,” she said. “I can tell you the day to have that discussion is not today.”

Commissioner Abe Laydon said he has no interest in leaving TriCounty now or in the future. He supported the stay-at-home order from the health department, he said.

“I’m not listening to demagogues, I’m listening to the public health experts,” he said. “Based on what we’re hearing from experts, when people stay at home it really reduces the transmission.”

Commissioner Roger Partridge was not immediately available for comment.

Douglas, the Tri-County leader, said commissioners expressed to him that even if they didn’t all agree, they supported the statutory right of the board of health to declare such an order.

“I’m disappointed that the legislators chose to communicate that way,” he said about the letter. “The laws under which we operate are laws the Legislature passed.”

In addition to Holbert and Neville, the letter was signed by state Sen. Jim Smallwood, of Parker; state Rep. Kim Ransom, of Acres Green; state Rep. Kevin Van Winkle, of Highlands Ranch; and state Rep.

In an interview with radio personality Peter Boyles, state Rep. Patrick Neville, House minority leader and a Republican representing Castle Rock, said stay-athome measures lead to “a Gestapo-like mentality.”

“All those people coming together actually solve this problem … not these panic orders and these shutdown orders and what’s leading to a Gestapo-like mentality,” he said in the March 25 interview.

The Gestapo, the secret police of Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, was notorious for its brutal methods, including torturing and murdering civilians and sending them to concentration camps.

In a news release following Neville’s comment, the Colorado Democratic Party asked state Republican leaders to condemn the statement, calling it a “wildly inappropriate” comparison. There was also strong backlash and a debate over the comment on Twitter.

When asked about the comment, Neville said he misspoke during the interview. “‘Gestapo’ was not the right word, I should have used ‘authoritarian,’” he said.

“I was on a 20-minute radio interview, words were escaping me.”

VOICES Songs keep coming one day after another

s your perception of time any different than it was a few months ago?

For a while it QUIET seemed like I was having at least two DESPERATION birthdays every year. Now? Time has slowed down.

Days are different.

Weeks are different.

Needing a cue, I came up with a calendar of songs.

I heard the Mamas and Papas sing Craig Marshall “Monday Monday” at the Melodyland Smith Theatre in Anaheim, California in 1966. The opening act was Simon and Garfunkel.

I was so angry that I left the surgical mask I was sewing sitting on my sewing machine unfinished.

read that six of our state legislators admonished the Tri-County Health department for being proactive in reducing the spread of coronavirus. I was also very surprised that despite the department’s prior consultation with the commissioners, the legislators felt they knew better than the health department workers who collaborated in coming to this decision.

Since the news of the coronavirus broke, my colleagues and I have attempted to educate patients and the public on what is expected. One important thing we have emphasized is flattening the curve and reducing the strain on hospitals. As the country and state has remained reactive to this virus, we have only seen an increase in infection rate. And since people are not heeding the call to physically isolate, I believe it was in the best interest of the county that the Tri-County Health department issued a stay-at-home order for preventing the spread of the virus.

Seeing as Gov. Polis made this decision himself a few hours after the Tri- County Health department, I want to know if the legislators still believe that Douglas County should separate from Adams and Arapahoe Counties?

The other side of that is the negativity that finds its way online.

and the backbiting have no place in our minds right now, or at any time, really. I highly recommend cutting those sources out immediately.

Zig Ziglar said, “We are what we are and where we are because of what we put into our mind. We can change what we are and where we are by changing what goes into our mind.” Spending so much time working from home or in isolation gives us plenty of time to access information and consume content. So, wherever we can find the positive, motivational, uplifting, educational and inspirational information, I encourage us to lock in on those people and sources who are helping us mind the business of our own mind while shutting out and shutting down the noise of negativity.

Minding our own business can also mean that we learn to spend quiet time reflecting on those things that bring us peace, inspire us, or boost our creativity. Sometimes just sitting quietly is the best way to take care of our mind. Many people find that meditation is helpful, others will spend time in prayer to take care of themselves mentally and spiritually. And others have shared with me that they simply sit quietly and allow their minds to empty as

they focus on nothing more than the pace of their breathing. And whether it’s through meditation, prayer, or just being completely still and quiet, the one thing that everyone shares is that they come out of each with clarity and a greater sense of peace.

Another area we can focus on as we take care of ourselves and our minds is learning how to practice patience. Many people were born with the patience gene, and God bless them, as it is much easier for them to be patient. Others of us missed out on that gene, and patience is work, and takes a lot of practice. Just like choosing what we allow into our minds, we can also choose to be patient and practice patience.

I know that in the coming days and weeks, our teachers will comfort our students, encourage them to learn and remain excited about the future, while likely pushing down their own feelings of fear and anxiety. Our teachers will create lesson plans for online learning and may wonder if their students will grasp the material in this remote setting. Our teachers may hit bumps in the road with technology, wonder if they’re still reaching their students with social-emotional needs, and may even shed more than a few private tears. But, in

First responders, community members turning to alternative source

A

round the time a national increase in COVID-19 cases began leading to product shortages, Spring44 Distilling in Loveland planned to make one highly demanded product — hand sanitizer — on-site. The distillery started making a handful of calls to gauge interest from those who might need the sanitizer most, like first responders.

Within a matter of days, the distillery was receiving call after call from police departments — not only in nearby northern Colorado cities but also from departments throughout Jefferson County and the broader Denver area.

“It just snowballed. The requests are coming fast and furious,” said Spring44 chief financial officer Robin Marisco. She added that the distillery has distributed more than 6,000 bottles of hand sanitizer to police organizations and others so far.

“Booze is not usually the answer in a crisis, but distilleries are now able to help in a super positive way,” she said.

“It’s a way for us to give back.”

As the impact of COVID-19 has escalated, numerous distilleries throughout the metro area have also launched hand sanitizer operations, producing and distributing to first responders and the wider community.

Where the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) would normally prohibit this, the two government agencies have amended their regulations in recent weeks as distilleries across the country have requested permission to enact their hand sanitizer plans.

As of March 26, the TTB’s latest statement said the organization is providing authorizations and exemptions for distilleries producing hand sanitizer, such as by waiving the need for additional permits. In turn, distilleries must keep detailed records of operations and follow a specific formula.

The FDA likewise has posted a statement saying it will not take action against distilleries, provided they meet certain requirements. Those include following the approved formula, preparing products under sanitary conditions and registering products with the FDA. With the relaxed regulations, more and more distilleries have jumped on board to address the needs of local organizations like the Westminster Police Department — which, on average, uses about three gallons of hand sanitizer per day, said investigator Cheri Spottke.

“This is an effort to get more hand sanitizer to the people who want it and calm some of the panic,” Adamson said.

So far, the department has received sanitizer from almost 10 distilleries, she said.

“At this point, all of it has been donated. Moving forward, we will be working with these distilleries to purchase hand sanitizer,” Spottke said.

“We cannot express our gratitude enough to these distilleries for their generosity.”

However, Marisco said, as more distilleries work to meet the growing demand, “there are certain components that are harder and harder to get.”

The lack of supply has been a barrier for Devil’s Head Distillery in Englewood, said owner Ryan White.

The distillery has the equipment necessary to make hand sanitizer but has had trouble sourcing some of the necessary ingredients, such as ethanol.

Some distilleries have been able to obtain ingredients through existing connections with plants or by producing the components on-site. But for White, while his distillery produces ethanol, the cost of producing the amount necessary for hand sanitizer isn’t attainable, and many of the suppliers he’s reached out to don’t have ethanol available to provide to new

accounts.

“I’ve got about 30 emails out to some of the smaller plants so we can help our community,” White said. “We’ve been getting multiple inquiries for hand sanitizer. The shortages nationwide have people looking at all sources, and we really want to participate and help with the relief effort.”

If the distillery is able to secure the necessary ingredients, it could be distributing sanitizer three or four days later, White said.

“My intention would be to make it as long as there’s a need for it,” he said. “The big piece of the puzzle is being able to have an uninterrupted supply.”

When the operation is up and running, White hopes to assist the entities that have reached out, which includes nursing homes, police departments and health care organizations.

In addition to distributing to these operations, many local distilleries have also been selling or donating bottles to individual community members. At Ballmer Peak Distillery in Lakewood, hundreds of area residents have come by to receive a four-

ounce bottle of hand sanitizer, with the distillery having already produced more than 2,700 ounces, said Austin Adamson, co-owner and distiller.

“We saw other distilleries in Seattle making hand sanitizer, so I started researching how they were doing it,” Adamson said. Ballmer Peak has provided the sanitizer to community members for free, finding that many donate to help the distillery cover costs.

Others in the area have found different ways to ensure the sanitizer gets into customers’ hands. For instance, Golden Moon Distillery, located in Golden, cannot distribute sanitizer for free because of its licensing regulations, but it has given sanitizer out along with the purchase of any bottle.

As the distilleries remain open under current stay-at-home orders, they’re also taking the chance to encourage customers to support their businesses after stocking up on sanitizer.

“When our tasting room closed, we were worried we couldn’t stay open.

We had to switch to only bottle sales to go,” Adamson said. Now, as residents line up by the dozens, the distillery has seen some buy a bottle of spirits to show their support.

And, while the distillery is thanking customers for continuing to support them, residents are returning the favor.

“We get people just thanking us, saying they’ve searched grocery stores and pharmacies and couldn’t find any hand sanitizer,” Adamson said.

“They’re just so happy there’s someone doing something like this.”

Ray feared what mental health effects the pandemic and school closures will have on the community.

“That’s going to become something we continue to monitor,” he said.

He also worried, like many, he said, that remote education could hinder relationships between educators and students. Both Ray and Tucker pointed to relationships as a crucial element of successful teaching.

“So much of the learning relies on immediate feedback,” Ray said.

In a normal classroom setting, teachers can see and watch for students who are struggling, needing additional attention. Now, teachers must rely on auditory cues when gauging how students are faring and lean on the relationships built over the first seven months of school, Tucker said.

Sam Kurucz, a social studies teacher at Highlands Ranch High School, said the loss of face-to-face communication with students is devestating, particularly as an AP teacher helping students prepare for national testing in the coming months.

“I’m feeling more than a little apprehension on how this entire process will change the dynamic of the rest of the year,” he said via email.

Kurucz sorted through mixed emotions when he learned the district would transition to remote education.

He was glad and willing to take the step for the health of the community.

But remote education requires selfdrive among students and reliance on technology to learn.

“I know some will adapt quickly, but for others the struggle will be significant,” he said. “I’ve been upfront with my students that this is new for me as well, and that we should all be patient and understanding. This isn’t easy for any of us but we will continue to weather the storm and do our best for our students.”

Parents critical to remote education The change and challenges are not isolated to the delivery of education.

“I think what’s also different is there’s a great deal of stress on our parents now,” Ray said. “Especially for that working parent.”

Marissa Harmon, a Lone Tree mother of two, said she’s gained an increased respect for educators after a few days of homeschooling her daughters.

“The change is even for us adults hard to adjust to,” she said.

Harmon owns a hair salon and was initially concerned about balancing her work on top of homeschooling.

When salons were ordered to close by the state, it came as “almost a little bit of a blessing,” she said.

Now, she could focus on helping her 7-year-old daughter Skylar and 5-yearold daughter Briana with school.

Skylar is in first grade at Lone Tree Elementary and good at managing herself, Harmon said.

But Briana is in kindergarten and was diagnosed with autism in October.

Harmon loves getting the chance to educate her children but said she was shocked by the amount of material sent home for Briana’s schooling, including a list of occupational therapies to continue working on.

At school, Briana has considerable support — one-on-one time with teachers, speech therapy, consistency in behavioral support, a quiet room if she needs to calm down, and a team of people to guide her development.

“I can’t believe the amount of work they do,” Harmon said. “I was shocked that she works on all that at school and that they took the time to make sure that it got home, so we had consistency.”

Harmon said a group text among other parents, where they share ideas for structuring days and mak-

ing school fun, provided a significant support system. Teachers have also encouraged parents against worrying about being a perfect educator and instead doing the best he or she can.

Ray said he’s been encouraged by creativity that teachers are using to connect with students, including special education teachers still tasked with helping students on individualized education plans.

Tucker also commended parents for the new role they are assuming during the crisis.

“Parents are a huge part of the success of this,” Tucker said. “Some of them feel challenged, some of them feel stressed out, and we do as well.”

Uncertain road ahead Ray believes the outlook for the crisis come mid-April will be pivotal in determining if schools can reopen this academic year. Some schools, like those in Kansas, will remain closed for the entire school year.

“The school district’s desire is certainly that once it’s safe, we want to get our kids back in the buildings, but we also are really aligned with Tri-County Health and their direction and also the governor’s directive,” Ray said. “We’re at the mercy of those two entities.”

Ray would “love to see us get back in our buildings by May.” Tucker said he’s not sure what will come to pass in Colorado or if schools might stay shuttered the remainder of the school year.

“I’m hearing different things,” Tucker said. “We don’t know.”

RTD approves plan to reduce services starting April 19

Service changes originally planned for May, along with a service-reduction plan to address COVID-19, were approved March 24 by the Regional Transportation District’s Board of Directors.

According to a news release, the approved changes will reduce the agency’s bus, light rail and special services starting April 19.

The extensive package of May oservice changes would originally have Btaken effect May 17, the release said.

However, a special board meeting was called to address COVID-19 by moving to the weekend service outlined in the May service changes. The COVID-19 plan was passed unanimously.

The Department of Human Services of Douglas County Government, hereinafter referred to as the County, respectfully requests Applications from responsible and qualified candidates for a caseworker position that provides certification and supervision of foster homes through the Collaborative Foster Care Program (CFCP) of Arapahoe, Douglas, and Jefferson Counties. All members of the team are cross-trained and may have other primary responsibilities within the unit. The Collaborative Foster Care Program of Arapahoe, Douglas, and Jefferson Counties main office is located at Arapahoe Plaza building in Littleton, CO.

Douglas County Human Services is seeking proposals for a comprehensive clinical supervised visitation program to serve the children who have been removed from their home, parents, or guardians.

Structured Analysis Family Evaluation (SAFE) certification will be required as this position is responsible for the yearly completion of home study updates. Duties consist of, but are not limited to, monthly supervision and assessment of certified foster homes, ensuring requirements are met to achieve/maintain certification, and providing support to families to ensure their ability to care for children in foster care.
