Senate bill would address youth mental health needs Stronger system of care would result in cost savings, better outcomes, officials say

Kari Eckert lost her 15-year-old son, Robbie, to suicide five months ago. The Lakewood High School student was an athlete, a leader, everyone’s friend, Eckert said. She saw no signs of struggle.

“Robbie struggled silently and he suffered alone,” said Eckert, sitting in a small room at the state Capitol on March 21, an hour before a bill aimed at curbing youth suicide would go to a Senate committee for debate.

The Senate Health and Human Services Committee unanimously agreed to send the bill to the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

Kobi, who spent eight years fighting for her son’s mental health, and Heidi Baskfield, vice president of Population Health and Advocacy at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Also in attendance at the intimate press conference were Sen. Rhonda Fields, D-Aurora, and Rep. Lois Landgraf, R-Colorado Springs, sponsors of Senate Bill 19-195.

The bipartisan bill addresses what public officials and health experts call a youth mental health crisis. In Colorado, suicide is the leading cause of death for people ages 10-24, and one in six teens has a diagnosable mental health condition, Children’s Hospital reports.

Fragmented services, a shortage of screenings and costly care are some of the barriers to adequate mental health care, experts and advocates in the field say.

“Our hospital continues to serve, in a way, as a warehouse for kids with complicated mental health needs because the system is not there to support them out in the community or in their own homes,” Baskfield said.

About me I have been a Parker police officer since 2001. During that time, I have had many responsibilities and assignments, but none have been more rewarding, and challenging, as being a K-9 handler. My main responsibility as a K-9 handler at the Parker Police Department is drug and criminal interdiction through proactive policing and traffic enforcement.

Prior to joining the Parker Police Department, I was a ski patroller for the Aspen Skiing Company. That was my first experience with working dogs. Watching the avalanche dogs work amazed me and gave me a passion for working dogs. Prior to that I graduated from Colorado State University.

I am a Colorado native and appreciate and enjoy all that Colorado has to offer. I enjoy fly fishing and inner-tubing down rivers in the summer and

getting into the mountains and skiing and tubing in the winter.

Why I love my job ...

I love being a police officer because every day at work is different. There’s one for-sure thing about police work: it is not monotonous. Working for an accomplished agency, such as the Parker Police Department, and working in such an amazing community, such as the Town of Parker, brings meaning and pride to my career.

I love everything about my career, from making positive police contacts with citizens in the community, to bridging the gap between the community and police with something as simple as my police K-9. I also enjoy chasing down bad guys and making the community a safer place to live and play.

I started my law enforcement career in Parker and will probably end my law enforcement career in Parker. Doing something you love and having an amazing group of people to work with

doesn’t make this job feel like work.

The best part about Parker is ...

Parker has grown immensely since I started working here in 2001, both the community and the police department. Parker provides a good mix of residential areas to live and a diverse mix of businesses to frequent. But to me, the best part about Parker are the citizens. Nearly every day while on duty I have numerous citizens say ‘Hi’ or wave to me as we are driving down the road. There are a few times that the waves don’t include all of their fingers, but the overwhelming majority of the citizens in Parker support our law enforcement efforts and support the Parker Police Department.

His comedy gives black-and-white conversation a new hue

C

omedian Sam Adams had just finished auditioning for a commercial the afternoon of Aug. 22, 2018, when he saw the text from a friend: “Dude, you are blowing up Facebook.”

A video showcasing a piece of his routine, which Dry Bar Comedy filmed in 2017, was catching fire.

Called “True Color,” it took a humorous look at race by pointing out we aren’t truly white or black, but rather shades of many colors. It had a million views and counting.

He drove to his Parker home, loosened his tie, sat on Ann Macari the couch, stared at his phone, watching Healey the number of views on his Facebook homepage climb.

He switched to his laptop, hitting the refresh button every five minutes: 1.4 million. 2 million. 3 million.

Messages poured in, from Germany, Switzerland, Vietnam, across the U.S. “I’m going to go the hardware store now — I bet I’m Paisley Pink.”

“We are Sahara Sands and Cashmere Pink.”

“We love this.”

Adams was stunned.

“Some people had already gone to the hardware store, sending me pictures of them holding up paint chips,” he remembers. “It was just mesmerizing.”

He stayed up until 4 in the morning, answering every message, saying “thank you, thank you,” posting smiley faces.

Eventually, the video surpassed 29 million views.

And Adams — whose true color, he will tell you, is not black — took a breath.

“I think people are tired of the divisiveness that comes with race,” he says, sitting in a Starbucks recounting the moment, still as awed by it seven months later as he was then.

“With race, I can’t solve it. I’m gonna try to make you laugh about it — maybe the humor makes you think about it differently.”

••••• In Harrison, Arkansas, a town of 13,000 people in the heart of the Ozark Mountains near the Missouri border, the “True Color” video popped onto Veda Remington’s Facebook feed.

She smiled as she watched, then promptly shared the video with friends — one of them Eric Stefanski, president of the Ozarks Arts Council who also books acts for the local theater.

“I feel like racism is something that people battle against or something they try to hold onto — it depends on which side of the coin they’re on,” says Remington, a mother of two young boys who has lived in Harrison all but a few of her 26 years. “That bit spoke to me in such a way — stop worrying about what you’re not, identify

Stefanski, 56, also a longtime Lutheran pastor, loved the routine, too, and thought Adams just might be a game-changer for the town.

“We have a reputation we have to live down,” says Stefanski, who moved to Harrison about 19 years ago with his wife and their two young daughters. But “for all the attempts people make to get rid of that reputation, really the only way to get rid of it is to have someone who understands the problem in the country and who is able to look at it with humor, is not afraid to address it and who can bring people together.”

So, on Aug. 23 at 10:17 p.m., Stefanksi emailed Adams’ agent with an invita-

tion to perform in Harrison’s Lyric Theater in the historic district of a town that has been called the most racist in America.

••••• In 2001, Adams, now 59, was a sports writer — he covered the Broncos and other sports teams for The Denver Post and the defunct Rocky Mountain News. He did stand-up comedy at night as a hobby. On Tuesdays, his day off because the Broncos had the day off, he would head to Cherry Creek mall, one of his “think-tank places” for comedy ideas.

On this day, he was standing on the second floor, peering over the railing at the children’s breakfast-themed play area below. Kids were playing on

the curvy strip of bacon, the fried egg, the waffle. He didn’t see the little boy, but his voice carried clearly through the air: “Look at all the pink people.”

The words struck Adams: “There’s a little kid who sees actual color. He’s looking at white people, but he’s not calling them white. He sees the true color.”

That night, he tried out a new routine.

“I don’t know why we say black and white — they’re the blandest colors on the color wheel,” he told the audience.

“This mic stand is black. I’m brown.

White people, you’re not white. Grab a napkin, put it on your hand. You’re pink. It had people laughing, no matter where I did it.”

With some polishing, he thought, that could be his signature bit.

It was in McCook, Nebraska, about six years later, that Adams — by then working full-time at comedy — nailed the home run.

He was wandering around in the small town’s Super Walmart, killing time before his show, when he saw the paint chips in the hardware area. He grabbed some brown ones, noticing the funny names.

“This really old man asks: ‘What are you doing?’ ” “I’m trying to find my true color.” “ ‘Well, you’re black.’ ” “No, I’m not. I’m Hoot Owl. Other shoppers in the area start gathering, thinking maybe I’m confronting him.

I say to the old man, ‘Let’s see what color you are.’ I grabbed some pink ones, put it up against his arm. You’re Papaya Smoothie. Now people are laughing — they see what’s happening.”

That night, the mic stand is black.

Adams is Hoot Owl. He pulls out the chip. The place erupts.

“Every time I went someplace, I went to Walmart, got some more paint chips. They didn’t all have the same ones. Caramel Nut is my favorite. Sumptuous Spice, this is my all-time favorite. Chocolate Indulgence. I have four that I like. I just like saying them.”

••••• Mike Raftery, Adams’ agent, forwarded him Stefanski’s email. “What are your thoughts on this?” he asked.

“I think Mike thought I would say ‘I don’t think so.’ ” But Adams took a long look at the offer. He researched the town, read the stories about its past — and its present.

White race riots in the early 1900s drove out all but one of the 115 black residents, who although poor were a vibrant community with deep roots, according to The Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture.

from town. News photos show the driveway to his compound lined with Confederate and KKK flags. Harrison is the organization’s postal address, and white-pride billboards sometimes appear along roadways, news reports say.

The 2010 U.S. Census put the town’s population as 96 percent white and 0.3 percent black — who are generally students at the junior college or employees at the FedEx freight carrier company, Stefanski says.

The Community Task Force on Race Relations, founded in 2003, openly acknowledges on its mission statement the town’s ugly history and racial challenges, and emphasizes its commitment to promoting diversity and an inclusive environment. A victory: In 2016, the town won the Dream Keeper Award, given by the state’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission for noteworthy efforts to improve race relations, specifically among young people.

With some resident-organized peace rallies and town-sponsored diversity marches, as reported in local news accounts, Harrison is working toward rebranding its image.

But the past lingers. The reputation still makes African-Americans reluctant to live there, Stefanski says. And there are still people in the community who display prejudice and hate toward others different from them, Remington says. Her late grandmother was one.

But, she says, “The majority are not that way.”

She credits her father — whom she describes as a man with a heart open to all kinds of differences — for instilling in her the creed “that people are people, that women and men need to be respected equally, that color doesn’t define a person.”

“We have some really truly wonderful people that live here,” Remington says of the town she learned to love in recent years, when she started looking for the good.

In the end, the astonishing reaction that “True Color” had inspired in so many people around the world persuaded Adams to accept Stefanski’s invitation.

“Race stimulates conversation, positive and negative, like no other topic,” Adams says. “It’s really just a comedy bit, not intended to stoke political fires. But the people, in their comments, were finding a message they deemed positive in that conversation about race. For me it’s a funny-yettrue look at skin tones. Nothing more.

But if people believe the bit can be a positive in the conversation, then I will deliver it. To do it in place where the reputation is stained with racism, I wanted the challenge.”

••••• Adams knows racism. He heard it, saw it, felt it. He attended, he says, one of the most racist high schools in America in the 1960s and ‘70s in Cleveland. But his first experiences with discrimination started earlier.

junior high school, walk down the street. It was eerily quiet, sun’s out, too silent. Then white kids would pop out from behind the trees, throwing rocks.”

During a drive to visit family in Georgia one July, a 9-year-old Adams and his family stopped at a restaurant.

They ordered waters and soda. A little boy in a nearby booth asked for a soda, too. His father said no. The boy noted Adams’ sister, then 3, had one, but referred to her by the N word. It was the first time Adams had felt the word directly aimed at him or his family. It made him feel small. He and his family walked out.

“I knew a lot of white kids were sort of hiding behind this thing that’s been passed down ... the cloak of racism” as he calls it. But “in class we would see how people really are. I was in band — the same kid who played trombone in the brass section, laughing and joking with me, was the same kid who would pop from behind the tree and throw rocks.”

And Adams thought: “ ‘I know who you really are — you’re the trombone player, you’re not the rock thrower.…

Eventually that’s how we worked it…

I’m just going to be me — when everybody started being themselves, things started getting better.”

He looks back on that time and wishes he’d displayed more leadership, more willingness to try to defuse situations, to find a way to connect.

Humor, he thinks, could have been a good tool.

••••• On Dec. 6, Adams flew into Little Rock, Arkansas, then drove to Fayetteville, about 75 miles from Harrison.

He wasn’t afraid. He was concerned, as he would tell his audience the next night.

He had prepared, trained, for months. “Like a boxer getting ready for a big fight. . . . I let myself believe I was going to fight racism.”

He studied the town’s everyday life to find ways to connect. He knew the high school football team was on a winning streak and congratulated it in promotional videos for the show. He found the diversity task force’s Facebook page and contacted it to gauge interest in his show. He knew about the town’s annual hot air balloon race.

He envisioned every possible scenario — from no one showing up to the performance to being the target of heckling or violence — and how he would respond.

As Adams left for the drive to Harrison, he made sure his gas tank was full. He bought plenty of water and snacks so he wouldn’t have to stop along the way.

In Harrison, he parked by the town gazebo. The night was cold, quiet.

Whatever happens, happens, Adams thought, as he got out of the car.

He looked up and saw the Lyric Theater across the street, its neon sign announcing: “Comedian Sam Adams Dec. 7 @7:00.”

He met Stefanski inside. They exchanged pleasantries, talked about how to introduce him. Make your announcements and I’ll just walk on, Adams said.

As he did, a loud roar swelled through the hall, where almost all 350 seats were filled. Adams’ knees slightly buckled. The cheering seemed to go on and on.

He hadn’t envisioned that scenario: “What if you go out there and they give you this great ovation? I didn’t know what it meant to them.”

Sitting in the audience for her first comedy show ever, Remington felt her heart fill.

“It just validated for me that the town is what I like to believe it is, and that we have people here that are supportive and find good humor, and they’re not what our reputation says we are. . . . Just to hear the entire place light up like that — it was incredible.”

Adams composed himself.

Stefanski finds it difficult to capture the moment in words. “It was a matter of him being honored and us being honored. It’s hard to describe apart from being there — it’s kind of one of these awesome moments.”

Time flew. Adams’ 45-minute show stretched into 90 minutes. He emptied his bag of fun. At the end, he invited people to shake his hand or have a picture taken with him for $5 — to raise money for the local food bank, which Adams had read was in need of donations.

There was the 13-year-old girl with the pink-and-white “I (heart) comedy” sweatshirt who wants to be a comedian.

And the woman who told Adams he would never know how much this meant to the town, because by showing up he had helped dissolve some of the reputation they were working so hard to erase.

“It was my pleasure to perform for them,” says Adams, who was deeply moved by the warm reception. “They were genuinely nice to me … I saw that they weren’t what the internet portrayed them to be.”

The crowd that night was mostly white, with a few Hispanic women, Remington says. But a cross-section of the town had shown up, Stefanski says — politicians, businesspeople, everyday residents, young and old.

And after the show, many lingered in conversation.

“I would have never seen them talking to one another,” Stefanski says.

“That dialogue is exactly the sort of thing we have to have going on here.

That’s where a lot of things are going to get repaired.”

••••• That his “True Color” bit has touched so many still amazes Adams.

At the end of the day, he says, his job is to make people laugh, not to make a political statement.

But, he reflects, we’re conditioned to see what’s different from the time we’re little. If you’re given three triangles and a circle, we’re always told to pick out the one that’s different, not the ones that are alike.

“Maybe,” he says, “if we stop seeing black and white, stop looking at color, we’ll get on to more important things.”

Adams, who is most likely returning to Harrison for a fall show this year, still has his original paint chips — Hoot Owl, Caramel Nut, Sumptuous Spice, Chocolate Indulgence. He also has the paint chip a woman in Harrison handed him that night. On it, she signed her name, circled the Peach Medley shade and wrote “We love you.

You are great!”

The paint chip sits on his desk, in the “me” room, alongside the trophies and photos with famous people — a reminder of an unforgettable night in which hundreds of true colors swirled into a tapestry of humanity at its joyful best.

Downtown Parker properties to be sold, sparking controversy A citizen committee is trying to put the zoning of the Pine Curve and PACE Lot properties to a vote

Four parcels of land in downtown Parker are ready to be sold, including the 24-acre Pine Curve lot that has been at the center of public scrutiny over its zoning twice before.

One year after the My Mainstreet Project launched, the results of the project have yielded protest from residents and councilmembers concerning the Pine Curve and PACE Lot 2 properties in downtown Parker and a citizen affidavit to change the zoning of them. Pine Curve is east of Pine Drive. PACE Lot 2 is a 1.4-acre lot north of the PACE Center, which includes part of its parking lot, along Mainstreet.

“The far majority (of citizens) have asked for some level of vibrant, convenient and fun development to happen,” Mayor Mike Waid said. “I have been involved in two of the three community engagement projects over the past decade on this (Pine Curve) property, and in every situation a very large percentage of citizens from all of Parker have provided extremely valuable input as to what they would like to see there.”

dents is trying to put the fate of Pine Curve and PACE Lot 2 to a vote.

“The Committee to Save PACE and Pine Curve 3.0” plans to circulate a petition for the purpose of placing a question on a ballot as to whether the zoning of the lots should be modified to Parks/Open Space. The “3.0” is representative of two previous efforts to modify the zoning on the properties.

Town council approved a listing agreement with NavPoint Real Estate March 18, setting the stage for the four downtown properties to be sold. The My Mainstreet Project, facilitated by Partnering for Parker’s Progress (P3), was meant to serve as a guideline for downtown developments based on opinions from residents. The town followed the results of the My Mainstreet Project survey to keep the Pine Curve and PACE Lot 2 properties zoned commercial.

Terry Dodd is a member of the five-person committee and has been involved in the previous Dodd efforts to re-think the development of Pine Curve.

want a big-box user in there, they don’t want 24-hour uses like a gas station, they didn’t want the lights to intrude with the residential neighborhood to the east, they don’t want the traffic problem along Pine Drive,” Dodd said.

“We saw what they (the town) were trying to do, Poage and they really haven’t left us any choice — if it’s all or nothing, then it’s nothing.”

Councilmembers Cheryl Poage and Jeff Toborg both voted against the approval of the listing agreement March 18 and voiced support for Toborg the citizen committee.

Toborg said he asked the council to agree to putting the zoning of the properties on a November ballot.

‘Not a representative population’ Poage and Toborg said they feel the results of the My Mainstreet Project were inconclusive based on the total number of resident responses. According to the town, more than 1,200 people engaged with the project, about 2 percent of the town’s population. Andy Anderson, the town’s spokesperson, said the town typically receives between 10 to 30 public comments on a municipal project.

‘Two years ago, we had the battle of Pine Curve. It was very obvious the people in the town did not want what they were trying to do on that land.’

“If you look at the number of respondents, it’s not a representative population,” Poage said. “Citizens have told (the town) repeatedly that they don’t want commercial development on Pine Curve.”

Weighing homeownership vs. renting, and effect on kids Douglas County Parenting Coalition to host public discussion

In the Denver metro area, homeownership is not attainable for many families. Market pressures have led to more rental housing development, and as a result, more families are turning to renting, says Tobey Stein, executive chairman of the Douglas County Parenting Coalition.

That’s why on April 5, the Douglas County Parenting Coalition, with the backing of Red Rocks Credit Union, will host a meeting of local governments, housing industry professionals, law enforcement, residents and more.

The plan is to have a public conversation about homeownership’s effect on children’s academic performance and how benefits to homeownership can be recreated for renting families.

Poage also stated she felt commercial development on the north end of the PACE Center property, facing Mainstreet, would create parking problems and take away from the aesthetic of the PACE Center. According to renderings on P3’s website, P3Paker.com, plans for the PACE lot include a multi-family housing development on the east half, removal of about half of the existing parking lot and an addition of a parking lot at the center of the proposed housing development.

The listing agreement includes a commitment fee of 1 percent of the price of each property to be paid to NavPoint if one or more of the properties is pulled from the agreement. That would amount to roughly $97,000 if both the Pine Curve and PACE Lot 2 properties were pulled from the contract. NavPoint stated it would not move forward with the agreement without the commitment fee.

The town added the 1 percent commitment fee after the threat and eventual deliverance of the citizen affidavit seeking to put the zoning of Pine Curve and PACE Lot 2 to a town-wide vote.

Stein said differences between homeownership and renting vary.

Renters are more likely to move often, she said, and possibly transfer schools or districts, creating gaps in a child’s education if curriculums don’t align.

Other examples apply to a child’s at-home life. Homeowners may have a spacious backyard for their children to spend time outdoors, or, neighborhood groups that help provide children a sense of community.

At the event, there will be a speaker who addresses helping children get access to open space and recreational activities if it’s not provided through their rental housing. There will also be a speaker who will guide attendees through addressing myths about renters and how to mitigate those misconceptions.

The coalition plans to take feedback from the meeting and create a booklet of information to guide residents and communities through creating benefits typically associated with homeownership for renters.

“Rental housing is a new reality,” Stein said. “A lot of people can’t come up with $50,000 down.”

In the most recent effort, 2016, the town announced planned to zone the Pine Curve property allowing commercial development. More than 500 residents signed a petition to stall the rezoning process. The town suspended the rezoning process as a result.

Three years later, the town began the My Mainstreet Project, surveying residents how they feel downtown should be developed. The results of the survey reported a higher percentage of residents felt the Pine Curve property should remain a commercial property.

“Two years ago, we had the battle of Pine Curve. It was very obvious the people in the town did not want what they were trying to do on that land,” Dodd said. “The town council has really not been willing to negotiate.”

Waid said he sees the Pine Curve property as an opportunity for a market center zoned for commercial to provide an “additional piece to the downtown Parker puzzle.”

“What our citizens want is vibrancy, excitement, convenience and access while maintaining the charm of Parker,” Waid said. “They want walkable shopping. They want a vibrant environment conducive to day and night time use. They don’t want a typical big box strip mall, and this project agrees with that.”

Eight candidates vying for IREA board seats Four incumbants look to retain positions with rural electric company

Customers of the Intermountain Rural Electric Association will elect four board members, and they’ve got a pool of eight candidates to choose from.

The Sedalia-based IREA serves 11 counties in or near the metro area — including a large portion of Douglas County and chunks of Arapahoe, Jefferson and Elbert counties. The service area covers 5,000 square miles and includes more than 150,000 members, according to its website. The nonprofit cooperative serves customers not provided energy through municipal or investor-owned utilities.

A seven-member board of directors makes policy decisions for the district that are implemented by IREA administration. Directors serve four-year terms and are not term limited.

Four districts are up for election this year. Seats in districts 1, 2, 4 and 6 will be decided in an election held during the district’s annual meeting on April 13.

All ballots were mailed out by March 14.

Mail-in ballots must be returned no later than April 12. Members can also vote in-person at the annual meeting, held at

5496 N. U.S. Highway 85 in Sedalia.

Directors Michael Kempe in District 1, James “Duke” Dozier in District 2, Timothy White in District 4 and Robert Graf in District 6 are all seeking re-election. Kempe is unopposed, and members will not receive a ballot for that seat. Dozier faces two challengers while White and Graf each face one.

Vying for Dozier’s District 2 seat, which comprises portions of southern Castle Rock, Sedalia, Conifer and Bailey, is Peter Smith of Castle Rock.

Smith worked in the cable television industry for 35 years and now is a business owner. He supports increasing the IREA’s use of solar power and exploring new revenue streams.

The remaining three challengers are running with Change IREA, also called Energy Freedom Colorado, a group of IREA members or volunteers who want the district to transition to clean energy.

Among them is Steve Roescher, of Castle Rock, who also has his sights sets on District 2. Roescher is a certified project professional and finance executive for Siemens Mobility. He aims to leverage that experience to help the district address debt incurred from running its coal plant.

Running in District 4 is Michael Hays, an IT professional from Castle Rock. His plans if elected include advising the board on policies to purchase renewable energy. District 4 includes portions of Castle Rock, Franktown

In District 6 is candidate Jason Altshuler, of Centennial, who hopes to represent portions of Aurora, Bennett, Strasburg, Byers and Deer Trail.

He works in the financial industry, currently for Westerra Credit Union.

He also plans to address coal plant debt using his financial background.

Incumbents say they’ve focused on transitioning the IREA to use more sustainable sources and on helping the company manage shifts in the industry.

In addition to serving on the IREA board, White is a former mayor of Castle Rock who’s held numerous board positions. He is founder and chairman at White Construction of Castle Rock.

He’s focused on introducing more energy sources and technology to the IREA while keeping costs low, he said.

Dozier is an 18-year IREA board member who’s also served on the Deer Creek Metro District board. His historical knowledge with the IREA makes him an asset to the company, particularly as it carries out long-term plans, he said. He supports the IREA in acquiring more clean power.

Graf, of Centennial, was first elected to the board in 2011 and is a 35-year

member of the IREA. Graf says his background in commercial banking and work as a certified public accountant sets him apart as a director and is crucial to the company. He’s used his finance and accounting background to help IREA restructure outstanding debt and lower interest rates, he said.

The IREA owns 25 percent of the Comanche Unit 3 coal plant, located in Pueblo and operated by Xcel. Change IREA candidates argue the plant is less economical that clean energy sources and hope to bring down company debt incurred from the plant.

IREA Corporate Affairs Manager Josh Liss confirmed that as of the end of February, IREA’s total debt from the Comanche Unit 3 was nearly $317.4 million. White has pushed back on claims the coal plant is too expensive to operate, writing on is website the plan has saved members money.

“It is true that the energy produced by renewable projects built today is inexpensive,” he wrote, “but Unit 3 provides more than energy; (sic) provides capacity and reduces the demand charges we would pay otherwise.”

Dozier said he’s open to selling some of IREA’s Comanche power entitlement, “if appropriate or necessary.”

Liss said a purchase agreement with the plant ends in 2025 but IREA owns a 25 percent interest in Unit 3 for the duration of its “useful life,” which extends beyond 2025.

Jack Eddington, 17, is chief petty officer of the Lexington Division (Denver) of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, a program for young people that teaches naval disciplines through leadership and technical training. Eddington leads a group of middle school- and high schoolaged cadets and has been involved with the Sea Cadets for about six years. He is one of 30 cadets nationwide chosen to participate in the program’s inaugural Senior Leadership Academy in Arlington, Virginia, in April.

A junior at Chaparral High School, Eddington runs cross country and track and is captain of the speech and debate team. He wants to study naval aviation upon graduation and plans to continue his service through the Navy.

The Parker Chronicle interviewed Eddington about his selection to the SLA and his time as a Sea Cadet.

QA

What is the Senior Leadership Academy?

In the Sea Cadet program, the highest rank you can achieve is chief. It’s similar to the Boy Scouts when you achieve Eagle Scout.

When you obtain chief, you’re a senior member of the program.

This year, the (Sea Cadets) wanted to offer a leadership academy that would teach the senior guys the final military leadership skills you really need when you’re at the top of the chain of command. It’s a lot of teaching people how to lead on a higher aspect and show people how to be the front of the pack.

What does it mean to be selected?

I’m honored. I put in so much work to help my cadets continue on. When you obtain the rank of chief, you’re not there for yourself anymore, you’re there to support your cadets. It’s their efforts that put me forward, and me teaching them what they have to do, trying to make them better, has made me a better leader.

What have you learned from this experience?

It’s taught me a lot of things on being a teenager and putting away those youth ideas and accepting to be part of a bigger thing....What

Why are you so passionate about Sea Cadets?

I’ve always felt a sense of service.

I’ve always felt I wanted to serve my country, and that’s what’s pushed me through Sea Cadets and obtain these rankings and obtain as much military knowledge as I can. Some of these things we get to do in the Sea Cadet program, no other person will ever get to do. I got to fly on the back of a C-130 over Clearwater, Florida, and I don’t know any other kid that’s gotten to do that at my age. I’ve gotten to talk to World War II vets, Korean vets, Vietnam vets, and listening to some of their stories, what they have to say, and listening to their aspects of what they had to do really drives me.

On another aspect, getting to see my cadets advance, getting to see all the cool things they get to do is amazing to me. I have cadets that get to do training all over the country. It’s amazing to see my cadets advance in their own rank and their own course work and obtain their own knowledge. Seeing that pushes me to be better so I can help them be better in the end.

The men’s college basketball season began last November and it will end in April at the intimate U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The stadium has a capacity of 66,655. It’s where the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Gophers play their home football games.

The stadium opened in 2016.

Despite requests for a “bird-friendly” exterior design by the Audubon Society and others, the stadium’s designers used highly reflective glass for “aesthetic reasons.”

The stadium is in the Mississippi Flyway route, and resulting bird deaths are double any other building in Minneapolis.

The women’s college basketball

season will end in April as well, at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

The arena opened in 1996 (as the Ice Palace), and seats 20,500 for basketball, and it is a much more sensible choice.

Some fans at the U.S. Bank Stadium will be so far away from the action that they won’t know who won until they get home that night.

I have attended regional and Sweet Sixteen games in the past, and even a Final Four, when the Final Four games were played in basketball-dedicated facilities.

But when someone figured out how much money could be made, the finals were moved to these behemoths.

What is unique is the easy access and prevalence of guns in our society by individuals who may have mental health challenges, some to the extent of posing danger to themselves and/ or others.

The proposed ERPO legislation is designed to serve at the intersection of gun ownership and mental health by temporarily removing guns at potentially the most volatile point in time from those who pose the highest risk to themselves or others. It is not the intent nor the design of ERPO to universally and permanently “grab guns” as some falsely suggest.

It seems more and more each day we live in such a way that we want to maintain a privacy around our faith and beliefs, protect them for ourselves.

It seems like we would rather not share with others how our faith and hope helped us through some of the darkest days and times in our lives.

We would rather not acknowledge or give credit to our faith and hope when good things happen in our lives or as we meet with happiness and success.

My experience and belief tell me that when we do have the courage and conviction to share our faith and hope openly, it moves from being the hardest part to the easiest part of having the faith, keeping the faith, and sharing the faith philosophy.

The more we do it, the more comfortable we become, and the more comfortable we become the greater our chances become of truly being a difference maker in the lives of other

Either we stand with our courageous police officers or we do not.

Because I stand with our brave heroes, I fully support Sheriff Spurlock in his efforts to save their lives, and denounce the nefarious plans of those seeking to undermine our democracy and harm those valiant men and women who defend us every day.

State Rep. Patrick Neville’s support for recalling Legislators whom he disagrees with, which he has affirmed through a recent Facebook post, is the worst kind of politics.

The voters of those districts chose their representatives in fair elections.

To use dirty special interest money to disrupt the legislative process is not what I support as a voter in this district. I would lead an effort to recall Rep. Neville so he can focus on his family’s failed political machine.

Patrick Neville mischaracterized the Child Safety Account bill that he had sponsored as one “to protect students that have been physically or sexually assaulted or bullied” by “[enabling] these students to transfer to a different school.”

Were Neville being forthright, he would have gone beyond this ostensible purpose and revealed that this bill

is really about siphoning away school district funding to subsidize families that wish to enroll their children in private schools or to home school them. The bill’s fiscal note estimated that in FY 2020-21 the bill would have cost Colorado’s public schools $67.9 million.

Colorado being an open enrolment state, students already have the option to transfer to another public school, whether within the student’s district or in another district. The General Assembly had the good sense to reject Neville’s tricky attempt to undermine Colorado’s public schools.

hen Jenn Ray’s son Dylan was 2, he started showing signs of sensory processing disorder and autism.

“His brain struggles to filter out all the sounds of life that you or I can filter out without a second thought — the dryer going in the background or a drippy faucet,” Ray said. “I didn’t always know how to help him find his peace.”

But soon she discovered a miracle: hiking.

“It was the first time I noticed he slowed down,” Ray, of Littleton, said.

“He wanted to take in every single aspect of the trail: bugs, plants, flowers, weeds, sticks and rocks.”

These days, Ray and Dylan, now 6, go hiking every chance they get, and are branching out into far-flung destinations: Moab, Fruita and the Great Sand Dunes among them.

“This time in nature has really changed the lives of my son and me, and it’s where some of our best memories have been made,” Ray said.

More creative, less aggressive Dylan’s peace in the wilderness is no fluke, said Rosemary Dempsey, the communications director for Great Outdoors Colorado, or GOCO, an organization that uses state lottery proceeds to preserve and enhance Colorado’s outdoors.

Getting kids outdoors pays big dividends, Dempsey said.

“We know that playing outside is important for many facets of a child’s development,” Dempsey said. “There’s an increasing body of research showing that kids who play outside are more creative, less aggressive, less stressed, and even show fewer ADHD symptoms.”

One of GOCO’s signature campaigns is Generation Wild, which encourages parents to get kids outside.

“On average, we’re finding that many kids get maybe four to seven minutes of unstructured outdoor play time a day,” Dempsey said.

“That’s compared to hours of screen time. Doctors are starting to literally prescribe outdoor play for kids.”

Parents don’t need to light out for the territory to connect kid with nature, Dempsey said.

“We can experience the benefits of getting outside just out the back door,” Dempsey said. “It doesn’t have to be a daunting experience.”

Part of the struggle is overcoming stigmas that come with modern parenting, Dempsey said.

Painting ‘from the inside out’ Local artist finds inspiration after serious head injury

James Holmes admits he never used to be able to “connect” with abstract art.

The 56-year-old Parker man said he never appreciated the art form.

Abstract concepts, to him, a 17-year board member of the Denver Art Museum, never existed in his mind.

Holmes is the CEO and executive director of the Cherokee Ranch and Castle Foundation in Sedalia and has a passion for riding horses. Standing in the Deep Space Lounge in downtown Parker March 19, Holmes said he never would have guessed he would be here, talking about how he became an abstract artist and about his pieces hanging on the wall for his first art show.

“I could never really think abstractly before,” Holmes said. “It wasn’t the way I was wired.”

In February 2018, Holmes broke his neck after being bucked from a horse on a day trip to Cherry Creek State Park. He also sustained a closed head injury, when a blow to the head causes the brain to knock against the skull.

He received emergency surgery and doctors warned him he could become paralyzed or die from the procedure.

Holmes came out of the procedure with little pain and few complications. But his neck was stiff, his head felt fuzzy and he couldn’t ride horses for most of the following spring and summer.

Holmes’ wife, Wendy, said that was the beginning of him discovering his new passion.

“He’s always been a very active person and, at times, in high-risk sports,” said Wendy Holmes, who works as the director of communications and public affairs for Douglas County. “For him to be in a position where he could not be with his horses, could not be active for so long — I told him that I thought it might be good for him if he couldn’t ride his horses, maybe he should paint them.”

‘Miracle of the accident’ Patients who sustain closed head injuries often experience some kind of personality change, according to the Mayo Clinic. Most eventually revert back to their old selves, while others don’t ever quite come back.

Holmes said since his injury some of his personality has changed. He can’t improvise on guitar like he used to. His brain felt “foggy” during much of his recovery and does, on occasion, still today.

And, somehow, he found a talent for abstract painting.

As a child, he enjoyed drawing and painting certain objects, but hadn’t created much art since then. After the accident, he found peace in creating abstract art, where shape and form are simplified.

“All of this stuff is a miracle of the accident,” Holmes said. “Hopefully, the gateway is open and now I’m feeding it enough to where it will become part of my normal ‘artistic diet.’ ” In most of his paintings, Holmes finds people. They don’t usually appear to him at first. The figures only appear hours later, when Holmes “meets the painting in the morning.”

In one painting he sees a woman’s face. Another shows an angel almost hidden, surrounded by blue and white paint. It’s unintentional, Holmes said. Holmes has found his subconscious come to life through his work.

“Something occurred after his accident where it was like a muse came to visit him,” said Stephanie Hill Newton, a friend and fellow artist. “When a muse comes to see us, we have a choice to grab on and follow that muse where it wants to take us, or choose to let it pass us by. He chose to grab his muse and hasn’t let that muse go.”

A change of pace Almost every piece hanging in the Deep Space Lounge marks a point in Holmes’ newfound appreciation of life. He takes things more slowly. He tries to live in the moment.

Karla Raines has been Holmes’ friend since 2002. She began painting in 2012 and said Holmes’ work as an artist has been nearly the opposite of who he has been his entire life — a man interested in fast-paced, highenergy action.

“James’ work has a serenity to it, and there’s almost an additional, emotional, visual component to it that is a direct connection to who he is spiritually and how he’s connected to his emotions,” Raines said. “I think what I’ve seen with James is immense continuity in terms of character of the person and his deep passion for the things that capture him.”

‘Beehive’ is all about the music Lone Tree Arts Center show explores sounds of days gone by

We wondered if Lone Tree’s director/choreographer Candy Brown had ever performed in “Beehive” during her long career. “No,” she answered, “I’m not really a singer — I’m a dancer who can carry a tune … But I grew up with this music. It’s a new experience — I never did a show that doesn’t have a book. (A script.) Of course we had the invasion from England then.

But this just goes from song to song to song.” She says there are elements in the set that evoke her teen years …

Getting dirty For some parents, instilling a love of nature and fostering independence go hand-in-hand.

“Letting kids outside, they learn their limits,” said Rebekah Eddy, a mom of two from Parker. “They’re able to understand what they’re capable of and what they’re not.”

One of the Eddy family’s favorite hikes is Maxwell Falls, west of Denver off Highway 285. Daughter Ella, 3, sometimes runs ahead of the pack — and Eddy lets her go.

“She’ll turn around when she feels too far away,” Eddy said. “Instinctually, kids need to develop their own sense of danger. They’ll either do it when they’re kids or when they’re adults.”

Eddy grew up in Montana, and her husband Jason grew up in Alaska, so sometimes the suburban landscape of Parker can feel a bit blah.

“As kids, we’d run all over the place with zero supervision, so when we went house shopping, it was bizarre to look at houses with tiny yards and no trees,” Eddy said. “We bought the house with the biggest yard we could find.”

Eddy is happy to let her kids get muddy.

“The natural world is generally safer than the constructs we put up that we think are safe,” Eddy said. “We’re increasingly in a sterile environment, and it affects immune systems. Synch-

Learning to deal with discomfort is crucial, Eddy said.

“I tell my kids: it’s OK if you’re cold,” Eddy said. “Our generation, for some reason, wants so badly to take away all levels of discomfort.”

Eddy’s methods are paying off, she said.

Parents worry kids raised in a world of high-octane entertainment will get bored on a trail, Ferrell said, but Denver is surrounded by top-notch state parks and open space parks that offer ways to keep them interested.

“Are they into dino fossils? Wildflowers? Birds? Try to connect the hike with things from their favorite movies or shows, for instance,” Ferrell said.

For Jenn Ray and her son Dylan, trail time will always be family time.

“Some of our most meaningful conversations have happened on the trail,” Ray said. “That time is just priceless.”

Maniacal mystery tour — from Parker author Becky Clark writes as career in ‘cozy’ genre that avoids questionable material

“All these people (I invent) have to do as I say,” cracks “cozy” mystery writer and Parker resident Becky Clark, as she talks about her processes in writing a new book.

First comes an outline, she says, with a “pretty standard template … I start with an idea — a series is easier.”

Her latest book, “Foul Play on Words,” is the second tale featuring her mystery writer—and mystery-solver, Charlemagne, “Charlee” Russo as a focal figure. Hart’s humorous world view kicks in early and often…

Russo arrives in rainy Portland expecting to be the keynote speaker at a mystery writers’ conference, organized by her close friend Viv, but learns right away that Hanna, Viv’s daughter, has been kidnapped. Viv tells Charlee to take charge of the conference while Viv searches for Hanna.

Turns out when our heroine arrives at the conference hotel, that all is not neatly in place!

To begin with, most volunteers are out with food poisoning — acquired while checking samples of the planned lunch — and the chef is

missing??? As Charlee proceeds to the Clackamas Room to meet volunteers and begin to handle supplies, she finds Lily and Orville, “awaiting instructions.”

Boxes sit unopened and gift packs are not assembled at all. Lily giggles a lot and Orville, who claims to be “a computer guy,” doesn’t have one with him to check on how registration is coming. (The hotel’s website is down.)

And a couple of hotel employees, Jack and Sarah, heard talking about the missing Hanna, are under Charlee’s suspicion and need to be watched carefully … Who are they meeting with? The missing girl’s boyfriend?

What can she find out about him except that he delivers Chinese food from his mom’s restaurant? She follows him of course.

And, it turns out, the hotel staff has double-booked the conference rooms — with a dog show. “We thought they’d be coming next year,” the blueblazered staffer says, “but it was this year. Isn’t that silly?”

A favorite scene for this reader was when the dog owners begin to arrive and rearrange the lobby furniture into an agility practice course for “Sparkle,” a terrier type and other athletic dogs of all shapes and sizes to practice their routines. (Clark says she’s a dog lover and always has them around her.) Those owners are another scene unto themselves.

In the meantime, assorted people appear for the conference — with funny names and individual quirks, causing Charlee to consider more kidnapping suspects.

Clark speaks of developing some of her characters by speculating about the subjects of celebrity photos … and speaks of the characteristics of a “cozy” mystery: “Somebody will die; who is murdered and why? How will killer and victim intersect with each other? (This had to happen yesterday!)

One goes back and forth through the story …(`don’t use first three ideas — too outlandish’), cozy mysteries can’t have much foul language and no sex and violence — but what happens can really be outlandish — there’s a huge suspension of disbelief … I try for a murder or kidnapping …”

Clark notes that generally, cozy mysteries are OK for teens to read— “they’re pretty clean.” And, she notes that there’s always a dog on her website — begging for a cookie. (This scene repeated while we were chatting and her furry buddy stopped by for a treat.)

How did this obviously rewarding career come about? “I started in the insurance business,” Clark said. She stayed home with her three kids in the same Parker home for years). “During nap time, I started to knock out personal essays. I sold one — stunning to me! The most exciting $50 ever. I have a degree in criminal justice and English … was interested in famous people. I read to my kids and took my son to the library where he couldn’t find one he was interested in that he hadn’t already read. `Why don’t you write one?’ he suggested. “I did, in 2001 and was underway. (It’s still in the drawer.)”

Clark says she lives “in a constant churn” of new ideas. Her agent is shopping a series set in the crossword puzzle world. “And there’s the one I’m working on today — no one’s dead

yet.” She finds that publishers like to buy a series — typically a three book deal — “they can renew if it’s selling well.”

She keeps large files on newspaper clippings — sometimes a single sentence starts a book going. “Who will live in this world? ... What if a body? … I eavesdrop on people, in restaurants and elsewhere, pretending to be on my phone … I see a house — that’s where they live…” She has a standalone mystery in mind about those residents.

She is a member of the local chapter of Sisters in Crime, an international organization, and calls on friends to review a new manuscript for her.

“It’s nice to have a tribe like that.”

She also sends new work to her agent to critique. And she enjoys local and national conventions — some for fans and authors — both famous and notso-famous. She teaches workshops for wannabe writers.

She tells them to network locally and nationally and especially recommends the Pikes Peak Writers Conference in Colorado Springs (May 3-5 in 2019).

She’ll need to find a new publisher for the third book in her Charlee Russo series as Midnight Ink has closed — and she is working on another series. She also writes non-fiction and teaches a workshop: “How to write a novel in eight weeks.”

Her career is sustaining, she says — it’s a full-time job. Her daughter is a professional editor and she tries to deliver “an as clean as possible” manuscript to her agent.

A closing note: From a Sisters in Crime speaker recently, she learned that wild animals won’t eat tattoos — so a book could start with the discovery of a tattooed body … Gems of information accumulate at the group’s quarterly meetings. The club in Parker meets at the Vine, near her.

Tips for spring and summer gardening

t’s that time of year, where our hemisphere comes to life, and that means your gardens are ready for some sprucing up, observation, and finally, Take a walk around the yard It’s been months since time has been spent in the garden so it’s important to walk around and observe changes. Maybe the perennials you planted in the fall didn’t make it. This will help you stay ahead of any bare spots or unwanted aesthetics as you prepare to grow.

New plants Colorado has a unique climate, sometimes making it difficult to know when to plant.

Landscaping plants should go in late spring or fall, while edible gardening plants can go in various times of the year from March to September.

Sometimes the weather moves these schedules around.

Prune By removing dead and old plant matter your plants can thrive. Be sure your pruning at proper lengths and times, as each plant is different. A quick google search or email to Rooney Bloom can make all the difference in the life of your plants.

Compost area After trimming and raking, you’ll have organic matter that can be a great addition to other parts of your garden. Most counties offer a composting service, however if not, start one in your backyard! Just remember brown (dead organic matter such as sticks), greens (apple cores, leftover lettuce, grass trimmings) and water!

Never use pesticides These kill and gravely harm creatures/pets, people and our environment. There are a plethora of other ways to address invasive species and unwanted creatures into your garden. Try industrial strength white vinegar for weeds, or planting African marigolds to keep bindweed away! Speaking of...did you know Lavender repels fleas?

A shovel, set of loppers, garden shears and rake will get you started strong. Ensuring these are in your “tool kit” will save you time and money. Make sure you know how to use these tools properly, they’ll become a good ally in the yard.

Organic mulch Mulch assists in suppressing weeds, retaining moisture, and improves soil fertility as it decomposes. Using mulch to top off your veggie garden or flower beds helps, especially in Colorado’s arid climate. BE SURE the mulch your purchasing is organic and hasn’t been treated with dyes.

Brewery in Elizabeth is a hopping place Elizabeth Brewing Company opened doors to taproom in mid-December

There have been a lot more visitors to the historic Carlson Building since the Elizabeth Brewing Company opened the doors to the taproom on Dec. 15.

“It has been great since we opened,” said Emily Briggs, one of the owners.

“We are doing well. Weekends are our busiest time. We are least busy Mondays and Wednesdays. We do trivia on Tuesday and usually have a pretty good crowd and Thursday through Saturday we are pretty busy.”

The taproom is open from 4 to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from noon to 10 p.m. Fridays through Sundays.

The brewery offers the choice of eight craft beers. The top five beers on the list are always available. The other three choices change.

“The last three beers on the list change when the supply of that beer runs out,” Briggs said. “Our customer’s favorite beers that are always available are our amber and our brown.”

first floor, walk past the brewing area and take the steps to the taproom.

Briggs said while the brewery doesn’t have a kitchen, it has contracts with Elizabeth businesses — Catalina’s Restaurant and Buzzard’s Big Mouth Pizza. She said the brewery calls in the orders for the customers from menus on the brewery’s tables, and the food is delivered to them at the brewery. The costs of the meals are added to the bill at the brewery.

She said the brew master is Scott Roberts, a longtime friend.

Briggs said a lot of people come to visit the brewery from surrounding communities as well as quite a few people who live in the Elizabeth area.

Kaela Teitelbaum and her husband said it was their first time at the brewery.

“We didn’t know this brewery existed until my husband found out about Elizabeth Brewery on social media,” the Parker resident said. “We like trying new beers and decided to check it out.”

Her husband Aaron said he liked the beer he was drinking and they probably will be back.

The brewery is located in the historic Carlson Building located at 239 Main Street in Elizabeth.

The Carlson Building was construct-

ed in the 1890s. Not a lot of information about the building’s history is available. Research information from the Elizabeth Library indicates the building had a variety of uses. For example, it was the Watt and Worthinham General Merchandise store that also sold farm machinery. It was also once home to the Elizabeth Library.

Research indicates that in the 1960s and 1970s it was home to artist George Carlson. He was a sculptor and had his studio on the main floor.

Later it was a coffee shop, bar and, at one time, it was the offices of the Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce.

Rocky Vista graduates accepted into residency programs STAFF REPORT

All of the class of 2019 graduates at Rocky Vista University have been accepted into medical residency programs following the National Residency Matching Program’s Main Residency Match, according to a news release.

This year was the largest match year on record, with more than 44,600 applicants competing for some 35,000 positions, according to the National Residency Matching Program, the release said.

After undergoing the application process, graduates received their results on Match Day. The results are delivered using a computer algorithm to match the preferences of applicants with those of residency and program directors across the country.

This year, Rocky Vista student doctors were matched into local residency programs at area hospitals and medical schools including Sky Ridge Medical Center, St. Anthony North Hospital, North Colorado Medical Center, St. Joseph Hospital SCL Health-CO, and the University of Colorado School of Medicine, the release said. Graduates also will train nationally at University

of California Davis Medical Center, George Washington University, The University of Texas Health Science Center, Children’s HospitalNortheast Ohio Medical University, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, and Darnall Army Medical Center.

The top specialties graduates will enter are family medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, and pediatrics. Graduates were also matched into specialty programs such as anesthesiology, psychiatry, neurology, obstetrics-gynecology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, vascular surgery, orthopedic surgery and pathology.

The National Residency Matching Program’s Main Residency Match is one of three match programs that fourth-year students participated in, with the majority of students (79 percent) finding a residency placement through the program.

Earlier in the year, Rocky Vista students matched into their top choices through the AOA Intern/ Resident Registration Program (12 percent), while students on the Health Professions Scholarship Program matched into militaryspecific residency programs (9 percent).

Fitness studio offers new workout Row House will have instructor-led rowing classes

Highlands Ranch is getting another boutique workout studio — with a new concept.

Row House, a class-based rowing studio, opens its doors April 11 at 9358 Dorchester St., Suite 104, on the southeast end of Town Center.

The franchise is the first in Colorado and one of three planned for the south metro Denver area. Other locations are expected to open in the next year or two in Lone Tree and Parker.

Its head company, Xponential Fitness, is behind popular brands like CycleBar and Club Pilates.

Denver resident Anne Johnson is the franchise owner and area developer. Originally from St. Louis, she left corporate America in January 2018 to start her own business.

She comes from a family of entrepreneurs, she said. She considered

home health care but loved the boutique studio concept.

“I’ve always been into fitness,” Johnson said at the studio’s soft opening on March 21. “I knew that I wanted to find something that was new, that sent a good message and was inclusive.”

Performed in a dark room with 24 rowing machines, the 45-minute classes offer a full body workout.

According to Johnson, legs do 60 percent of the work on the machine.

Arms and abs do the rest.

Tara McGlynn, an instructor at the Highlands Ranch studio, was an athlete for many years. Rowing, she said, is easier on her joints and for the most part painless — though some workouts leave her feeling sore.

“I feel strong,” Mcglynn said of rowing. “And confident.”

Row House offers six different levels of classes, performed to the beat of music. Instructors keep tabs on participants using a monitor and offer one-on-one assistance throughout the class.

Johnson said she strives to offer an inviting, judgment-free workout.

“Our goal,” she said, “is to appeal to all ages, all shapes, all sizes.”

A couple nights per week, Holmes returns to his basement art studio, turns on some Pearl Jam or Jack White, and paints. He starts with a base of white paint, then begins to integrate different colors — orange, blue and yellow show up frequently in his work. He doesn’t spend much time thinking about the piece, and doesn’t look at the piece too closely until the next morning, when he begins to see the figures in his art and the emotion the piece evokes.

“What I say to people is ‘I paint from the inside out,’ ” Holmes said.

‘A lesson in all of it’ An optimist at heart and a devout believer in God, Holmes took up painting as a hobby. He developed a love for his pieces, and be-

gan to share his work on Facebook.

Friends would comment on what they saw and how each painting made them feel, and Holmes began to see it, too.

Holmes’ work will be on display at the Deep Space Lounge until April 27. He’s already had people interested in buying his pieces, and he provides smaller ones for $25 as souvenirs. His work can also be seen at jamesholmesstudio.com.

Most of Holmes’ head fogginess has faded, he said. His ability to play guitar has slowly come back to him, but his art remains one of his greatest new passions.

“When I had this accident, part of my being able to accept the harsh moments about the prospects of the surgery, what it might look like… part of my ability to process that was my faith,” Holmes said. “I knew that there’s a purpose for my life. I believe everything that happens to me is for learning. There’s a lesson in all of it, and my belief in God allowed me to accept it.”

Meghann Silverthorn as a member of the board although he and his colleagues created the problem.

He claims that interviewers charged with filling vacancies on the board “didn’t ask about, nor were we interested in, [applicants’] partisan affiliations or their political views.” Given Ms. Silverthorn’s well-known and highly publicized partisan profile in the community, this is a laughable statement. Did the library board think that voters had forgotten Ms. Silverthorn so quickly?

During her years of service on the Douglas County Board of Education, Ms. Silverthorn was a lightning rod for citizen discontent.

Her controversial positions on educational programming and financing were thoroughly repudiated by voters in the most recent school board election. Voters absolutely rebuked Ms. Silverthorn’s partisan approach to governance; they elected all three candidates who ran against the extremist policies that she and her colleagues promoted.

Two weeks ago in this newspaper, David Ray, the current school board president, was quoted as saying that board must now unwind 10 years of compensation mismanagement by the previous board.

The library board was naïve to think Ms. Silverthorn’s appointment would not continue to generate controversy. Or perhaps board members do not care about the will of the people who support the library with their patronage and tax dollars.

In either case, Ms. Silverthorn should resign immediately to maintain a nonpartisan library board.

Otherwise, citizens will constantly question the integrity of the board and the decisions it makes regard-

I assume the political reason may have to do with securing positive votes. Since charter schools receive over $4 million dollars each year from the state for capital needs in addition to per-pupil allocations, are they going to share those funds with our neighborhood schools that don’t receive those extra funds?

You can make an argument that these charter schools are our kids, but are all of them from Douglas County? Charters enroll a very high percentage of out-of-district students. During the election, references were made how surrounding school districts had more local money to fund their schools and the need to compete. Wouldn’t it be wise to put some energy of using the district’s high paid lobbyists to change the law that besides state funds going with students no matter where they attend, that local MLO and bond money should also go with those students?

Taxpayers in Douglas County are at a disadvantage since Douglas County has more charter schools compared to neighboring districts and are funding millions of dollars each year of local money for students that are not residents of Douglas County. What could our schools do with that extra money? I am not opposed to charters and a strong believer in parent choice, but under the current laws a level playing field does not exist between charters and neighborhood schools.

The bill would create the Office of Children and Youth Behavioral Health Policy Coordination in the governor’s office, along with a commission and advisory council.

It would work to increase public awareness of youth behavioral needs and facilitate collaboration between communities, state departments and political subdivisions, the bill outlines.

Soccer player not short on drive 5-foot-1 Carli Haney is relentless on offense

utheran’s Carli Haney picked herself off the turf several times during a March 16 girls soccer match against Colorado Springs Christian.

It seems that being physical is a one way for opponents to try to slow down the diminutive 5-foot-1 Lions forward who is a tireless offensive threat.

Once early in the match, Haney was knocked off the ball near the corner and had to leave the game. However, she returned to action a few minutes later.

She just tries to ignore the shoves and pushes and keeps defenders busy with her relentless runs towards the opponents’ goal.

“I get knocked around but I’m not afraid to give it back,” said Haney, whose older sister Calli also plays on the team. “I like to hang in there.

Sometimes I can hang back and turn on them but a lot of the times I can’t so I stay in there.

“Moving around a lot is real helpful because it draws the defender out with you and then it creates space for your other teammates. Goals are important but a lot of times giving up that chance to drop the ball back to get a better look and assisting can be better than taking the shot.”

ennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest won the 2018 women’s NCAA golf championship and then soared to No. 1 in the women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), which she has held for 23 weeks dating back to last July.

And this is a golfer who developed her game in Colorado, where it is often OVERTIME difficult to keep all the basics of a competitive golf swing tuned during the winter because of elements like sub-freezing temperatures, snow, slush and ice.

“Yeah, it was Jim Benton a little difficult,” said Kupcho, who won two Class 4A girls state high school individual championships while playing for Jefferson Academy in Westminster.

“I guess it was kind of good for me just because it is cold in the winter, so I played basketball pretty much my whole life. I played that during the winter and it kind of gave me a little time away from golf.

“I haven’t got burned out and that’s the main mistake with juniors nowadays. They just get burned out and don’t want to play later.”

Kupcho will be honored for her stellar 2018 accomplishments by the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame as the Amateur Athlete of the Year at its annual awards dinner on April 3 at the Hilton Denver City Center.

“Both my parents (Mike and Janet) play golf and I have an older brother (Steven) that started playing. It sort of became a family thing. My brother and I both loved it and we became pretty competitive. That’s how it all started.”

Last season she was a first team Women’s Golf Coaches Association All American, broke her own Wake Forest record with a 70.60 scoring average and became the first wireto-wire NCAA champion since 2002. Kupcho was also a member of the victorious United States Curtis Cup and Palmer Cup teams.

Kupcho was the runner-up in the 2017 NCAA championships when she wound up losing by one stroke after recording a triple bogey on the 17th hole.

During his senior season at Ponderosa High School, Cohlton Schultz didn’t leave behind any doubts that he is one of the best-ever Colorado high school wrestlers.

Schultz won his fourth consecutive state championship at the CHSAA State Championships Feb. 14-16 when he pinned Legend’s Colin Lavell in 52 seconds in the title match.

He became the 24th wrestler to win four state titles. Schultz won two at 220 pounds and the last two in the

“Cohlton might be the best kid to ever compete at the high school level all four years. Some might argue that point but he is so, so gifted that few will be able to do what he has done in Colorado and the many out-of-state tournaments where he has met some amazingly great competition.”

Schultz went into each match with a simple plan.

“I have a game plan going into every match but I am willing to take whatever my opponent gives me,” he explained. “If I put him on his back, I want to finish him every time.

“Being a big guy as a freshman, I wasn’t the biggest or the strongest. I was able to use a little bit of my savvy or whatever. Now my physical ability has caught up with me a little bit and it feels good. It has definitely been a grind.

It’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of hours, but I’ve got a hold on it and it feels real good.”

Schultz, who won the Cadet Greco World Title in 2017, will wrestle next year at Arizona State and possibly in the 2020 Olympics.

“I love Colorado,” he said.

“I was born and raised in Colorado. It will always have a special place in my heart. It will mean a lot to represent Colorado on a national stage.

“The Olympics is a definite possibility. Outside of high school matches, I’m in there wrestling with some of the best guys in the world. I’m right there with them.

“I know it’s something I can do and I will make sure I put in the work to get there.”

“It all started for me with me losing the national championship the year before,” she said.

“That kind of lit a fire in me.

That kind of developed all the goals to be on all the USA teams and then to win nationals as well. It was just me coming out with the fire and really wanting to prove to myself and my teammates that I could do it and I wasn’t going to go away with just taking second like the year before.”

Kupcho, a three-time Colorado Women’s Golf Association stroke play champion, has a scoring average of 70.94 in 16 rounds so far this college season and recently tied for second in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on March 8-10 with a 54-hole total of 3-under par 210.

After playing so much during the summer, I come back and just want a break. Once I get it that sort of lights a fire for me. It would be really cool to win it (NCAA) two years in a row. Just going professional is going to be a big thing too.”

Kupcho has earned a Ladies Professional Golf Association card and will be turning pro after the college season concludes.

She won’t be able to attend the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame banquet because she will be playing golf in the Augusta National Amateur.
