Economists: ‘We’re in uncharted waters’ but no reason to panic Local economists weigh in on impact of COVID-19

March 17 was the first day of Yume Tran’s new normal.

The owner of Indochine Cuisine in downtown Parker, a Thai and Vietnamese staple of 17 years, sat at one of the dozens of empty tables in the dining room of what would normally be the Tuesday evening dinner rush.

It was the first day of a 30-day ban on dine-in services as ordered by Gov. Jared Polis to slow the spread of COVID-19. Except for the kitchen staff and a host, the entire restaurant was empty, serving only the occasional customers trickling in to pick up takeout orders.

Energetic and light-spirited, Tran said she is taking it one day at a time.

“We’re still not used to not seeing certain regulars that come in certain days,” Tran said. “Now, it’s sort of strange.”

Economists say it is too soon to tell what the long-term effects of the COVID-19 outbreak will have on Colorado’s economy. The short-run effects have been evident. The order to stop sit-down service has severely hurt bars and breweries, forcing some to close, at least for now.

Employers have been forced to re-

duce employee hours and sometimes make pay cuts or lay off staff.

“The local business community, particularly small businesses, are at the forefront of the crisis, as their revenues decrease significantly,” Leigh

Seeger, vice president of the Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation, wrote in an email March 18.

Other at-risk industries with significant impacts include mining, oil and gas, transportation, travel/tourism and leisure/hospitality, Seeger wrote.

On March 17, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment reported unemployment claims increased from 400 on March 7 to more than 6,800 March 17. The CDLE stated in a March 17 news release it had experienced unprecedented traffic to the unemployment call center and file-a-claim website, leading to application processing delays. The department stated it is implementing system maintenance to keep up with the demand.

“We’re in uncharted waters.” said Patrick Holwell, workforce economist for Arapahoe/Douglas Works! Workforce Center. “Nothing like this has happened in most of our lifetimes.”

Holwell delivered a message of optimism, however, saying Colorado’s approach to stopping the spread of the virus, and the strong leadership from the governor’s office down to local levels, will help the entire state pull through the pandemic.

“We’re going to make it through this because Colorado is not only a great place to live, but it’s filled with a lot of great, bright people who are proactive in the face of all this,” Holwell said.

Parker bar and restaurant owners try to manage amid changed world

Parker bar and restaurant owners are grappling with ways to attract customers in the wake of a ban to all dine-in service through April, from expanding or creating a take-out option to engaging customers through social media. All the while, the short-term impacts of extended closures has parttime service employees scrambling for ways to make ends meet.

“A lot of restaurants aren’t coming out of this,” said Dale Trujillo, owner of Blu Note Bar and Grill. “It’s hard to make plans. It’s hard to tell your employees, look at them in the face and tell them when they say, ‘Will I be back to work in 30 days?’ I don’t know…All I can do is try to help the people I can.”

Trujillo said his focus right now is on the well-being of his employees and how he can be of use to the community.

The spread of the novel coronavirus throughout the region and country led Gov. Jared Polis to institute the ban, beginning March 17. Polis also urged against gatherings of 10 or more people for eight weeks at the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Local businesses may be reprieved somewhat after the Small Business Association granted Colorado’s request for a disaster declaration March 19, allowing businesses to apply for up to $2 million loans.

That still may not be enough to keep some businesses going if closures last much longer than a month. Throughout the state, restaurant owners are reducing employee hours or laying workers off altogether.

Tailgate Tavern owner John Jordan said his biggest worry is how long the pandemic will last. He hopes the worst of it can be controlled within three weeks. The federal government last week warned the pandemic could last 18 months. Agencies like the Douglas County School District have closed facilities and canceled events at least through April 17, employing a “wait and see” mindset.

“It’s surreal,” Jordan said. “It’s hard to fathom this is reality.”

Jordan had stocked up on basic foods and supplies to give away to his employees picking up their paychecks.

Jordan and his kitchen staff met to consider take-out options or next steps.

“We’re just trying to wrap our heads around what’s going on here,” Jordan said.

Yume Tran, owner of Indochine Cuisine, said it was imperative to stay positive and take it one day at a time. On the first day of the instituted ban, Tran calculated her lunch rush revenue was about one-fifth that of a usual day.

In a silver lining to an otherwise distressing time, several owners felt grateful for the immediate support of the Parker community. Many feel the community is returning the favor for the years of support the restaurants have given to local clubs and organizations.

Gov. Jared Polis and members of Colorado’s congressional delegation urged the Small Business Administration to designate small businesses in counties across the state eligible to qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans. The Small Business Administration approved the disaster declaration March 19.

Still going strong Not all industries have been been hurt by the virus. Delivery, logistics, transportation, health care and some retail industries, like grocery stores and warehouses, have seen an increase in demand for goods and services, according to the CDLE. The CDLE plans to work with those industries to help workers who have had permanent cuts to their wages or hours find part-time work.

King Soopers and Safeway list hundreds of job openings across the Front Range, as some stores are spread thin due to the sudden panic shopping that has emptied store shelves.

Uber, a ride-sharing company, announced on its website March 16 it will be working to encourage orders from independent restaurants on its subsidiary app, Uber Eats, “to help make up for the significant slowdown of in-restaurant dining.”

March 27, 2020M Local chambers of commerce and economic development partnerships are stepping up to provide resources for how businesses can respond to the virus.

Tom Brook, CEO of the Denver South Economic Development Partnership, said communication will be critical to help local businesses stay informed on federal, state, local and private-sector business support initiatives and resources.

“We are best served by falling back on what has served us well historically and making sure we stay in communication and collaborate with each other,” Brook said.

After the pandemic Economists hesitate to make any long-run prediction about the lasting impacts COVID-19 will continue to have on Colorado’s economy once the pandemic ends, since it’s unclear how long this will last. Brook noted the economy was in a good position — high wages, near-recordlow unemployment rate —at the start of the pandemic as opposed to just before the 2008 financial crisis, the most recent recession in American history.

“To the extent we are able to effectively contain this from a medical standpoint quickly, we should be able to rebound quickly,” Brook said.

The mass closures and cancellations have forced businesses to adapt their workflow. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

has recommended people stay home to work, if they can. Many employers across the country followed suit, providing work-from-home options for office employees.

“The face of American work will possibly change,” Holwell said. “I think there’s going to be a lot more reliance on things like GoToMeeting” and other virtual meeting applications.

A bright side Holwell has seen is the amount of support from community members to help one another.

“We all know how vital it is to keep all these businesses going through the worst part of this so they can hit the ground running,” Holwell said. “People are starting to pull together. Nobody I know is giving up hope.”

Brook agreed it, saying he does not believe there is reason to panic.

“We’ve been through challenges before. Let’s see how each day unfolds,” Brook said. “It’s going to be a challenge. It’s incumbent on us to say together, work together and have faith.”

Tran seconds that.

“We’ve been very positive,” Tran said. “When you’re a business owner, you have a responsibility to your team. Not just to give them a paycheck. They look at you as their future. They want to know: ‘Am I going to be OK?’ “You want to tell them: ‘We have a plan. We don’t know if it’s going to work or not, but we darn well have a plan every single day.’”

“We’re seeing a lot of our regulars in the community come out and support us. Parker is a great community for supporting buisinesses, especially restaurants and bars,” said Sean Damon.

Damon has worked at Parker restaurants for 15 years. “As restaurateurs in the community, we love to give back to the community. That’s what we love to do, and now we’re seeing a little bit of that come back to us. It’s refreshing, but it’s been hard on everybody.”

Ordering take-out from restaurants that offer it and tipping servers go a long way, especially now.

“We’re all in the same boat,” Jordan said. “We’re all in this together. We’re going to get through it together and be stronger for it on the other side.”

Trujillo said he is focusing his energy on his employees. He can’t help but feel worried for what this means for younger businesses.

“I’ve been very fortunate my staff has become more of a family. My heart breaks for these people and I’m going to do everything I can to help them,” Trujillo said. “The business will work itself out … But it’s those people my heart bleeds for. I’m doing everything I can for them, and of course I can only do so much.

“I dumped my life into this bar,” Trujillo said, “but I have a belief system that I will come out on the other side, and if you do the right things that we try to do for each other, everybody will be OK.”

Practice kindness, connect with others, journal How to manage feelings of stress and fear during the COVID-19 pandemic

With a global pandemic closing schools, businesses, entire communities and threatening people’s livelihoods in addition to their health, it can be difficult to stifle the anxiety, stress and fear coming with the crisis.

“I think the public is very scared and I think that there’s a lot of fear and anxiety because there’s so much uncertainty,” said Cynthia Grant, chief clinical officer for AllHealth Network, a behavioral health nonprofit offering services throughout the Denver metro area.

Vincent Atchity, president and CEO of the statewide nonprofit Mental Health Colorado, believes a tipping point came when organizations started canceling events and closing offices in mid-March as COVID-19 concerns mounted.

“Once the school districts started going, that creates this dramatic ripple effect,” he said.

Still, there are ways to cope, manage the mental health challenges, and yes, find joy in the days and

weeks ahead.

Abigail Tucker, chief clinical officer at the Westminster-based Community Reach Center, said it’s important that people focus on their mental well-being in adAtchity dition to their physical health while responding to the pandemic.

“People are sometimes still forgetting that health includes your mental health,” Tucker said.

What’s normal, what’s not?

Additional stress and anxiety at a time like this is a common and collective experience, Atchity, Grant and Tucker said. Just how much is normal will vary for each person, but clear signs emerge when someone is struggling with his or her mental health.

“Everybody reacts differently to stressful situations so normal is definitely a very wide range,” Grant said.

Being isolated and quarantined can add to the challenge.

“It can make people feel really helpless, that there’s really nothing they can do,” Grant said, “and I think that all of that is normal.”

For people with existing mental health conditions, times of crises can be exceptionally tough. Grant said some of their clients with

Both AllHealth and Community Reach Center are seeing increased demand for services along with Telehealth, which allows people to access treatment remotely.

The pandemic “can also have a peculiar effect if somebody is used to living with bipolar disorder or depression,” Atchity said. “In collective unsettlement, they can suddenly find they are the calm ones and are more unflappable, like, ‘OK, now you understand my world.’ ” When in doubt, the three said, reach out to a local provider with questions about mental health.

Tucker said a good way to gauge whether your reaction is healthy is to reach out to a trusted loved one and ask how he or she has perceived your response. Are they worried about you?

How to cope, offer support Atchity urged the community to find ways to quell panic even in the midst of crisis “so that we’re not defeated by our anxiety.”

There are many ways to keep spirits up and fears at bay during the pandemic, Tucker, Grant and Atchity said.

Stay busy. Cross that home improvement project off the to-do list. Bake cookies. Go outside. Appreciate the world’s natural beauty. Play with the kids. Clean the house. Walk the dog.

Journal. Eat a healthy diet and exercise — both can affect one’s mood and stress level.

Stay up to date and keep informed, and change practices as recommended, but don’t obsess over checking the news or information floating around online.

There are many ways to make the best of social distancing, self-isolation or selfquarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Not only can these tips fend off boredom and restlessness, but they can also help manage stress, anxiety and other mental health challenges, local experts say.

Mental Health Colorado President and CEO Vincent Atchity suggests staying busy to keep the mind off stressors and limiting the flow of information on social media and the news. Stay informed and educated, but don’t obsess over updates.

He also encouraged people to get outside and appreciate the natural beauty around them.

Cynthia Grant, chief clinical officer for AllHealth Network, and Abigail Tucker, chief clinical officer for the Community Reach Center, offered several other suggestions. Take up a home-improvement project. Bake cookies. Clean the house.

Play with the kids. Take the dog for a walk.

Go on your favorite hike. Most importantly, keep connected with loved ones using technology like Facetime, phone calls and social media.

“Control your flow of information,” Atchity said.

Use all the technology available to stay in touch with loved ones. Text, phone calls, social media, Facetime, and so on. If someone isn’t familiar with the high-tech tools, use the extra time at home to learn.

“Social distancing does not need to be emotional distancing,” Tucker said.

Amid shutdown, seniors battle loneliness Coronavirus crisis robbing elderly of socialization

Rich Foerster doesn’t know when he’ll see his friends again.

Foerster, 72, is on the board at the Parker Senior Center, which most days is filled with folks chatting over card games and coffee. But amid the COVID-19 crisis, the center is shuttered, and Foerster worries about what that means for lonely seniors.

“I feel helpless,” Foerster said.

“I’m worried they’ll get lonely, then depressed, then stop eating, then get sick. Loneliness can be deadly, and that’s what we try to address.”

The Parker Senior Center is doing what it can, Foerster said. Volunteers are calling as many members as possible, and the center is still selling to-go meals.

But the center’s food bank is closed, and nobody knows when old friends will be able to gather together again.

Beyond the center, Foerster said, churches, rec centers and libraries are closed, leaving few options for the elderly to maintain their routines.

“I hope people pull together,” Foerster said. “I hope people are looking out for the seniors in their lives.

They’re going to need it.”

Older adults and people of any age with serious underlying medical conditions are at higher risk for the most severe complications of COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“I can see the fear of isolation cropping up already,” said Jen Engquist, the director of Break Bread, a free weekly community meal program in Littleton that largely serves local seniors.

“Our mission isn’t food,” Engquist said. “It’s building meaningful relationships through food. This is a game changer.”

Break Bread will still be handing out to-go meals every Saturday, but Engquist said she’s afraid physical solitude will turn into despair.

“People need to know they mean something to others, that somebody still cares,” Engquist said. “We’re getting through this together, apart.”

Even those elderly people who live in senior homes are adjusting to a more limited lifestyle as state health orders force strict quarantines.

“Everything’s shut down,” said Hemingway, 85. “We just stay in our rooms. We’re taking it day by day.

People our age are the ones this virus kills, so there’s a lot of worry.”

Hemingway praised the center’s staff, saying they are trying to keep morale up, and are diligent about watching for fevers among residents.

“We’re well taken care of,” Hemingway said. “We’re just wondering how long this will last.”

Douglas County schools closed through April 17 by Polis order District moves to remote learning, still providing meals

Amid heightened efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, Gov. Jared Polis on March 18 announced an executive order prohibiting all in-person learning in Colorado’s public and private schools through April 17.

The order directed the commissioner of education to provide guidance and support for P-12 schools as many transition to remote learning and continue providing students with free and reduced meals. Here’s what the Douglas County School District is doing in response to the governor’s announcement.

trict will be following the order, according to a district announcement, leaving all DCSD buildings closed through April 17. This includes the Before and After Care (BASE) program and preschools. Before the governor’s executive order, DCSD was slated to reopen to on-site learning on March 30.

The district had already prepared to transition to remote learning for the week of March 23, after its regularly scheduled spring break wrapped up, amid growing concerns about the spread of novel coronavirus. Schools and facilities will be deep cleaned while students learn from home.

March 23 will be a teacher planning day and students will not receive assignments until the following day.

The district said it does not expect students will be online for a full school day.

“The Douglas County School District’s intent is to ensure that students continue with learning during this closure,” the announcement said.

Colorado families who have encountered economic hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible for assistance.

Families can apply for the Colorado Works County Emergency Disaster Program through Colorado PEAK, an online service that allows qualified Coloradans to screen and apply for medical, food, cash and early childhood assistance. Go to coloradopeak. secure.force.com for more information or to apply.

Among the requirements are that a family’s annual combined gross income must be below $75,000 and the household must contain at least one child 18 or younger.

‘A very scary time’ The uncertainty of the coronavirus crisis is weighing on some seniors.

“I don’t know when I’ll see my grandkids again,” said Sue Frommelt, a board member with the Highlands Ranch Senior Club. “It’s surreal.”

Frommelt, 70, said she moved to Highlands Ranch to be closer to her grandkids, just like many members of the Senior Club.

“We had a cruise planned, and that got canceled, and we figured we’d just spend Spring Break with the grandkids,” Frommelt said. “Then my kids told me they want me to just stay home, and they won’t come over. It hurts. I understand it, but I don’t like it.”

Many older folks in Highlands Ranch are transplants, Frommelt said, and without senior clubs and other community groups, life can drag.

“I saw a post on Facebook that said ‘In case you need to know, today is

For Love Inc, a Littleton-based nonprofit, many of their volunteers and the people they serve are elderly.

One of Love Inc’s programs is driving elderly people to errands or doctor’s appointments. The pool of drivers has plummeted, said Kathryn Roy, the group’s director.

“Our volunteers are mostly vulnerable retirees,” Roy said. “We’re understanding if they don’t want to serve as they have been.”

Thankfully for now, the number of needed rides has also dropped, but Roy said she anticipates it will rise again in coming weeks.

“People are putting off doctor’s appointments, but they can’t do that forever,” Roy said. “People will need to get to food banks and drugstores.”

The best thing the community can do, Roy said, is stay as connected as possible and look for ways to help vulnerable seniors.

“Look out for your neighbors,” Roy said. “Call people. We have to renew our commitment to community, even as we’re feeling isolated.”

Hospitals prepare for surge of COVID-19 patients Well-being of staff members is key component, health leaders say

Since early March, managers and administrators at Littleton Adventist Hospital have been meeting as many as six times a day.

Those meetings, part of the hospital’s emergency preparedness activation, originally took place in-person but have since shifted to video chat as the hospital aims to reduce in-person contact between its employees.

However, the purpose of the meetings has remained the same: to evaluate and discuss where the hospital’s capacity and stock of supplies are at as the facility anticipates a possible influx of seriously ill COVID-19 patients.

It’s a worrying possibility, but Dr. Mark Elliott, an emergency room physician who serves as the president of Littleton Adventist’s medical staff, says he feels “very good” about Littleton Adventist’s ability to respond to the challenge.

“We have been training for this kind of thing for years, and Littleton Adventist has experience with mass casualties in the past,” Elliott said.

“This is not a mass casualty situation, but the same preparation that gets us ready for that gets us ready for this.”

That pre-existing preparedness has also been bolstered more recently, Elliott said, by efforts to convert underutilized space into negative airflow rooms where COVID-19 patients could be treated and to make more nurses available to treat those patients by postponing elective procedures.

Littleton Adventist Hospital is part of Centura Health, a Centennial-based network of 17 hospitals that also includes Parker Adventist Hospital, Castle Rock Adventist Hospital, St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood and the St. Anthony North Medical Campus in Westminster. Elliott said the other Centura hospitals are similarly prepared for the outbreak. WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS? Coronavirus is a family of viruses named for the microscopic view of crownlike spikes on their surfaces, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

These viruses can cause the common cold or more severe diseases such as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome), which have seen outbreaks in the past, according to the CDC. COVID-19 — standing for “coronavirus disease 2019” — first appeared in late 2019 in Wuhan, China.

Symptoms of COVID-19 can include fever, cough and breathing trouble. Most people develop only mild symptoms, according to Denver Public Health. But according to the CDC, some — usually those with severe underlying health conditions or older adults — develop more serious symptoms, including pneumonia, which can be fatal.

Technically, COVID-19 is caused by a virus named SARS-CoV-2.

Incident command system A chief medical officer at HealthOne, the largest hospital operator in the Denver metro area, said the hospitals in that system, which include Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Swedish Medical Center in Englewood and North Suburban Medical Center in Thornton, are similarly ready to deal with a surge in COVID-19 cases.

That’s in part because HealthOne is owned by HCA Healthcare and is therefore able to benefit from the sophisticated incident command that HCA employs for the 184 hospitals it owns across the United States and the United Kingdom.

“We’ve done a fairly sophisticated analysis of what we expect in terms of patients and the supplies we are going to need to care for those patients, and we feel pretty good that we are in this for the long haul and we are able to take care of these patients,” said Dr. Jason Kelly, the chief medical officer.

Still, the COVID crisis has presented some unique and perhaps unintuitive challenges — even if its treatment is mostly similar to treating other existing respiratory diseases. Among the recent concerns has been the closure of all schools for several weeks, a decision that could slow the spread of the disease but also have an impact on hospital staffing levels.

“One of the things that we worry about,” Kelly said, “is child care in terms of — if we have moms and dads that work here but they don’t have any child care, are they going to be able to come to work?”

Kaiser closes 21 clinics The COVID-19 crisis is also having an impact on Kaiser Permanente, a managed care consortium that serves more than 600,000 members in Colorado, with many locations in the metro area.

On March 18, Kaiser announced it was closing 21 of its 31 Colorado clinics and canceling all elective procedures in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The separate Children’s Hospital Colorado also recently announced that it is closing several of its clinics for the same reason.

But even with a reduced number of open clinics, Kaiser still has an important role to play in helping address and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Dr. Wendoyln Gozansky, a geriatrician and vice president and chief quality officer at Kaiser, said the company is trying to take what she called “a virtual-first approach” to caring for potential COVID-19 patients.

That approach asks those exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms to use virtual options ranging from emailing a doctor to “e-visits” to seek initial treatment, although Gozansky emphasized those patients whose treatments cannot be managed virtually can still seek treatment at Kaiser offices.

“We really are trying to meet our members where they are during this time of unprecedented change during this pandemic,” Gozansky said.

Medical staffers under stress Such approaches make sense not only to prevent the spread of the virus at medical facilities but also because hospitals must try to save as much space as possible for the most critical patients, given the likelihood they will receive an influx of them.

That possibility, as well as the general anxiety that comes with the unpredictability of a pandemic and treating patients who may have COVID, also takes a toll on those who do the work of treating patients.

“I think it has tremendous impact on the staff,” said Elliott. “We have staff that are coming every day knowing they may have potential exposure and taking that home, and I think that certainly adds an added stress. But we certainly have resources to help staff that feel uncomfortable.”

That impact is likely to increase as facilities have so far seen few if any COVID-19 patients. Kelly said Sky Ridge has only had a couple of confirmed patients.

“Right now you feel a little bit like the soldier on the castle wall,” Kelly said. “You’re ready, your sword is sharpened, the castle has been battened down and now you’re kind of waiting for the invading army to show up.”

There’s no reason we can’t have a little fun

It may not be anyone’s idea of an ideal spring, QUIET but it’s the only one we’re going to have DESPERATION this year.

A year that’s only three months old is already history-making. Your children will reminisce about 2020 in 2050.

I won’t be around. I do hope to be around in 2021, however.

Craig Marshall I am already looking forward to the Smith day when the adage about humor being “tragedy plus time” allows us to kid about what the world went through. That day will

come, but when?

People are swiping rolls of toilet paper from public restrooms.

You can still find some toilet paper online, but it won’t arrive for weeks.

The so-called Spanish flu (1918) was traced to Haskell County, Kansas.

(Some add northern China and a British army base in France as points of origin.)

I have seen images of long lines at stores for stay-at-home provisions, but I have not encountered it myself.

Yet. The stories that will come from this time period will be never-ending.

Some disturbing, some heartbreaking, some comical.

Parents unexpectedly have their children at home, and it’s not summer vacation yet.

One mother said her children were

“bored.”

Therefore, I have decided to provide a little community service in the form of brain teasers.

Let’s start with an easy one: “What has to be broken before you can use it?”

Answer: an egg.

OK, now for some that are a little more difficult. Answers below.

We decided to isolate at my house and she showed up last week with a U-Haul load of clothes. I burned some serious calories lugging her stuff up the 16 steps to the second floor. My house is on the open space and both our rooms have fantastic views. We have a ton of wildlife around the yard, including Fred, our pet squirrel, and Slithers the garter snake.

ave you ever put together a jigsaw puzzle? If you have, you know exactly what it feels like to be working through it and then finally finding that one piece of the puzzle that had haunted you for the past couple of hours or maybe even days. And most times, at least for me, when I did WINNING finally find the elu- WORDS sive piece, it had been right in front of me the whole time. It’s frustrating and rewarding all in the same moment.

During this time of staying home in self-quarantine mode, we are passMichael Norton ing the time in several ways, and one of those ways is assembling jigsaw puzzles. So, I am currently and acutely aware of the scenario above. One of the first things that happens when putting together a jigsaw puzzle is that we typically find all the edges and begin building the perimeter, don’t we?

Then, we start to fill in the middle.

And with each added piece the image

takes shape and we build momentum as we know that completion is getting closer. But somehow, the temporary sense of accomplishment and joy we feel as we look at our completed puzzle is replaced by a certain sadness, the puzzle is finished.

The world seems like a bit of a jigsaw puzzle right now doesn’t it?

Maybe our lives feel like a little bit of a jigsaw puzzle too. The health crisis has brought with it all kinds of uncertainty, missing pieces, and missing information. Disruption in employment, empty shelves in the grocery store, shortage of health-care resources and hospital beds, travel restrictions and bans, work and school closures, and worship services and gatherings being canceled. Throw in the various levels of compliance and non-compliance with social distancing and the puzzle gets even harder.

Here’s the thing. Just imagine if we were given all the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle but not a picture of what the finished product was supposed to look like. It wouldn’t be impossible to finish, but it just might take a little longer and be a bit harder. It’s kind of where we all are right now.

We are looking at this giant pile of puzzle pieces and we don’t know what it is supposed to look like in the end.

Right now, what is happening is that country by country, state by state, city by city, and home by home, we are all building our perimeters. We are finding, defining, and connecting all the edges so that we can start to fill in the interior of the puzzle. Some of the pieces seem obvious to us, and others are still elusive and that’s okay. You see, with each new piece we find and connect, and with each new piece that we understand where it goes, we get that much closer to solving the puzzle.

For us, it’s just my wife and me working on our jigsaw puzzles together at home. However, this worldwide jigsaw puzzle has many more people trying to put it together. There are a lot of really smart people and organizations working towards solving the

puzzle. There is a lot of money and focus being applied to getting everything reassembled. This is a puzzle that is going to take longer than we had thought, will be harder than we anticipated, and will cost more than we had planned for. But in the end, it will be solved as all puzzles eventually are.

And unlike the personal jigsaw puzzles we work on in our homes and for fun, this is a puzzle that when we do solve it, there will not be any sadness or remorse when it is over.

7/19/1950 - 3/18/2020 Bonnie Small, 69, of Parker, CO, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on March 18, 2020. Bonnie was born on July 19, 1950 in Redwood Falls, MN. She was one of six children. She loved and adored her siblings.

Loving Wife of 46 years to Steve Small.

Devoted Mom and Role Model to Heather (Andrew) Stephenitch and Jennifer (Trent) Getsch. Beloved Mimi to Ian, Cade and Brynn Stephenitch and Izzy, Lyla and Owen Getsch. Bonnie was preceded in death by her loving parents, Francis and Phyllis Woelfel.

Bonnie received her degree in Interior Design and ran her own business where she enjoyed helping friends and clients throughout the years. Although she loved her work, her career was raising her family and she took great delight in all aspects of their lives.

Bonnie was a longtime member and active in Parker United Methodist Church.

She treasured the many lifelong friendships that were made there.

Bonnie loved spending her time enjoying the great outdoors with her friends and family. Whether it was hiking, biking, golfing or gardening, enjoying God’s beauty was something she loved most. Bonnie’s faith in Jesus showed through in everything she did. She made it a priority to love others the way Jesus loved her.

The last 13 years of her life, Bonnie invested much of her time and heart into her 6 grandchildren. She wanted nothing more than to engage in their lives and watch them grow up.

She will forever be missed by all of her friends and family. A Celebration of Life is tentatively scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2020 at Parker United Methodist Church. A Reception will follow at the Church. See ponderosvalleyfunerals.com for any updates.

You don’t have to drive far for an escape

H

aven’t left the house in several days? Looking to get out, hopefully, sans crowds?

As communities throughout the nation ban gatherings of 10 or more and urge people to practice social distancing because of COVID-19, Colorado’s great outdoors await.

The following are just some of the many options that don’t require you to leave the metro area.

North Table Mountain Looming over downtown Golden, this mesa — it isn’t technically a mountain, despite the name — offers great views of both central Golden below and the downtown Denver skyline to the east. To take in the views, park at the Golden Cliffs parking lot and take the 1.8-mile round-trip trail up the mesa. This relatively short trail is rated intermediate but it has some steep and rocky sections that can be challenging.

Once at the top, continue your exploration of the mesa by taking the longer North Table Mountain loop or just take in the rewarding views before heading back down.

Roxborough State Park The nearly 4,000-acre park southwest of Littleton is home to stunning red rock formations and abounds with natural beauty. The park’s eight trails total 14 miles and range in difficulty. Take a walk, run, cross-country ski or go on a snowshoe adventure.

The park does not allow pets, drones, camping, mountain bikes, horses, rock climbing, fires or

marijuana, to preserve the natural features.

Note, amid coronavirus concerns, all planned programs and events are canceled for the month of March, although the park and visitor center will remain open for normal hours, according to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website.

All trails start at the visitor center. Parking is limited. Hours vary but are generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during winter.

Castlewood Canyon State Park Just a jaunt from Franktown, Castlewood Canyon State Park is home to a piece of Colorado history and mild to moderate trails. From half a mile to 4-mile stretches, trails take users along Cherry Creek, to a natural amphitheater and the skeleton of the legendary Castlewood Dam, which burst and caused the great flood of 1933.

Park hours are from sunrise to sunset. Gates close one hour before park closure. Leashed pets are allowed on most trails, except for the East Canyon Preservation Area trail.

Farmers’ High Line Canal Who knew that the very lifelines Colorado’s farmers and ranchers depended upon would provide so much recreation and car-free commuting? ‘An empty church, but still saying Mass’ Area pastors encourage congregants to find lessons in this strange time

Two priests at St. Thomas More Catholic Church walked down the aisle of an empty church March 20 to begin their daily Friday Mass.

Normally, daily services like these garner crowds of about 200 congregants. These days, only about a dozen or so staff, including the priests themselves, dot the gathering space of the Centennial church. Instead of 17 weekly services, the 12,000-person parish is now down to seven masses per week, or one every day.

Now that Gov. Jared Polis has ordered all in-person services of more than 10 people to be canceled as a measure to combat the spread of COVID-19, most people participating in the Mass will be watching the livestreamed celebration from their homes. Across the state, as places of worship experience mandated cancellations for the first time in their history, they are finding creative ways to build the sense of community that coming together as a congregation engenders each week.

“This is one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen,” St. Thomas More IT manager Bob Lehto said while waiting for the service to begin. “An empty church, but still saying Mass.”

About 150 people tuned into the Friday livestream service. By the following Monday, the taping had about 1,400 views.

Many other places of worship throughout the Denver metro area have also begun streaming their services.

Some, like Cherry Hills Community Church, an Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Highlands Ranch, have found other solutions in addition to livestreaming. The 4,500-person church is offering three “Drive Up Church” gatherings on weekends, similar to a drive-in movie. Cars entering from Grace Boulevard will be guided to staggered parking spaces, and people can view the service from inside their vehicles.

At St. Andrew United Methodist Church, also in Highlands Ranch, Bible studies and support groups have been moved to video chats for the more than 3,000-person church. Soon, Rev. Mark Feldmeir plans to begin daily live video chats on Facebook, where he can respond to people’s comments and provide a brief devotion.

“Despite the challenges that the current coronavirus is creating, it’s also creating new opportunities to think creatively about how we reach people,” Feldmeir said.

By far the most common remedy for churches is to stream their worship service online. But this, of course, isn’t a perfect fix and doesn’t replace the opportunity to attend in person.

For St. Thomas More and other Catholic churches, this solution takes away the opportunity to receive Communion, an important sacrament within the faith, said Monsignor Tom Fryar. In this sacrament, which is practiced in every service, churchgoers line up to eat and drink, symbolically, the body and blood of Christ.

“It takes away the central element of our spiritual celebrations,” he said.

“The Eucharist is the source and the summit of our spiritual life.”

While it’s undoubtedly a challenging time for places of worship, many pastors are encouraging their congregants to find the opportunities in this solitary time.

“The main lesson is that this is really challenging for people who think they’re in charge of their lives,” Fryar said. “We like to think so, but there is so much in our lives that we can’t control.”

To glean these lessons, Feldmeir is encouraging people to limit their intake of news and entertainment.

“In a strange way, this crisis becomes an opportunity for us to focus on what matters most to us,” he said.

• Support groups and Bible studies being transferred to video chat formats.

• Organizing ways to donate food and funds for local charities.

• Encouraging congregants to take time to pray, read scripture.

through Arvada, Westminster, Northglenn, Thornton and beyond.

The original irrigation ditch system dates to the late 1800s and connected Arvada’s Van Bibber Creek to Clear Creek, with more segments added later on.

Cities began adding athletic paths for walking, running and bicycling later on. In Westminster, a trailhead can be found at the southeast portion of Standley Lake — about 90th and Independence.

From there, the trail runs through Westminster for 10 miles, connecting to the Northglenn’s Northwest Open Space and on to E.B. Raines Park before continuing on to the northeast through Thornton and on to Erie.

But the best part of the trail is the dizzying number of connections you can make using the Farmers’ High Line Canal as the spine.

Near 86th and Kipling, it connects to the Rocky Mountain Greenway Trail that winds up at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Refuge in Commerce City if you go east and the Rocky Flats Refuge if you go west. It also connects to the U.S. 36 Bikeway and trips to Denver or Boulder as well as numerous neighborhood side trails, parks and open space areas.

As more people look to get outside, the number of visitors to area parks and trails has been on the rise. The following are some tips from Jefferson County Open Space to help keep yourself and others safe: • If you are sick, do not visit parks and public areas. Stay home, except to seek medical care.

Running, cycling in east suburbs Something the east side of the Denver suburbs have going for them is their endless walkability. Look up a map of the metro area, and you’ll notice something: There are nearly no state highways crisscrossing Aurora and east Centennial.

The whole region is a refreshing place to go for a walk, run or bike ride, or find a park you didn’t know about with your children.

For the dedicated cyclist, a trip down the West Toll Gate Creek Trail and the Cherry Creek Trail — including some nearby trails — can take you the full north-south length of Arapahoe County, from Colfax Avenue to the south county line. Lots of trails can take you farther east, and all the way down to the Southlands mall area.

Arapahoe Road, a source of perennial frustration in traffic, can be a

peaceful ride east of Parker Road.

And Parker Road in itself offers a wonderful view of the Cherry Creek State Park, south of Belleview Avenue.

Here’s something you might not know: On the Cherry Creek Trail, you can go straight from downtown Denver to Cherry Creek State Park and all the way down to the Castle Rock area, parallel to Parker Road.

That’s nearly 40 miles of biking, for anyone determined enough to try it.

And as confusing as central and west Centennial can be to navigate, two southeast-to-northwest paths — the Big Dry Creek and Little Dry Creek trails — offer a peaceful way to cut through the suburban sprawl.

High Line Canal Winding 71 miles from the mouth of Waterton Canyon to the prairie of northeast Denver, the High Line Ca-

nal Trail is among the Denver area’s finest outdoor offerings.

The trail passes through numerous distinct segments, meandering through cottonwood groves, past wetlands and verdant meadows, many hidden from the surrounding city. Numerous trailheads dot the length of the journey, making for easy access to short segments. The portion through Cherry Hills Village is often regarded as the crown jewel.

The High Line Canal Conservancy recently published a trail guide and map, loaded with information about every mile of the trip, available by mail order at highlinecanal.org.

Mountain biking at Apex Park Mountain cycling can be challenging, but once you get going in full gear, there is no better feeling than cycling through the woods.

Apex Park is a beautiful place to get out into open space while practicing social distancing. If you have a mountain bike, try the Enchanted Forest trail. The trail is about 3 1/2 miles long, but it can be used for things other than mountain cycling.

Take your dog on a walk there or even spend the afternoon using the trail for a hike.

Apex Park is at 121 County Highway 93, near Golden.

Anna is a great cook and I am a lot healthier, albeit, heavier, than when we met. Our families are happy with our isolation choices and feel we are much safer together. We are from the “obey rules” generation and intend to do our part in trying to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, but we feel it is much healthier for older people to try to live a normal life. Our normal life is acting like two fools (one of us is) who should be acting their age.

Hold colleges accountable I won’t be voting for any candidate who supports college loan forgiveness through a new law, bankruptcy or any other means. I and my children worked to pay for college

costs and to pay off loans that they and I took. It wasn’t easy or free, we worked for it. The Obama administration prosecuted for-profit colleges that loaned money to institutions that extended loans to students for degrees that proved to be worthless.

It is only fair that all other institutions should be held to that same standard. If they accepted monies from students who were then unable to obtain gainful employment because of their de facto worthless degrees then colleges should be held responsible for the loans, not taxpayers.

Many of these institutions have endowments worth many billions of dollars, which they should be required to use to pay for the worthless degrees they conferred and have profited from. They need to be held accountable for their failures, and not be allowed to foist it off on blameless taxpayers.
