DCSD extends spring break

Schools to undergo deep cleaning during two-week closure due to COVID-19 concerns

The Douglas County School District is joining a flurry of Denver metro area school districts in announcing school closures because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The district will extend its spring break by one week, closing from March 16-27. In that time, all schools, district facilities and buses will be deep cleaned.

“We are facing an unprecedented public health crisis in our community. The decision to close our school district was extremely difficult, made in consultation with our area superintendents and out of an abundance of caution for our families,” an online announcement from the district said.

The announcement stated “strong, urgent action” is necessary to prevent spreading the virus and to save lives.

The district will decide whether to reopen on March 30 toward the end of the two-week closure.

Confirmed cases in Colorado continue to rise; gyms, theaters, casinos close for a month

The wave of closings and cancellations in response to COVID-19 continued to grow in Colorado as the state lowered the maximum number of people that should gather in one place to 50. The next day, March 16, the City of Denver — and then the state itself — ordered restaurants and bars to stop sit-down service.

“To best protect public health, the Colorado Department of Health and Environment is recommending that Coloradans follow the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance released today,” the department said in a news release.

That guidance says for the next eight weeks, organizers should cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States.

As of March 16, Colorado’s total climbed to 160 confirmed cases of COVID-19 — the disease caused by a widespread coronavirus — and 20 were hospitalized. More than 1,200 people had been tested at the state lab.

In the metro area, many cases were confirmed across Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties. Gov. Jared Polis said last week the state was “likely on the verge of a tipping point where we will see more community spread” of the virus.

Community spread can mean cases and outbreaks in areas where people became infected and the source is unknown. When it’s more widespread, it means cases and outbreaks in many communities where the virus is spread between people.

While the state government generally has stopped short of issuing a ban on large gatherings — instead sticking to giving “recommendations” — the City of Denver on March 16 ordered that all events of 50 people or more must be canceled or postponed for eight weeks.

Crowds that are part of normal operation at transit stations, shopping areas, medical facilities and similar spaces are exempt. The order does not apply to religious gatherings.

The order from the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment also required that bars and restaurants may not serve food for sitdown consumption. Carry-out, drivethru and delivery are still allowed, but people in waiting lines for carry-out must stay 6 feet away from each other when possible.

Eating areas in medical facilities and nursing or assisted living facilities, or similar buildings, are exempt — as are airport concessionaires.

Later that day, the state ordered bars and restaurants to stop dine-in service for 30 days. Delivery, take-out and drive-thru will still be available.

ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE If you have symptoms of COVID-19, first call a health care provider, clinic or hospital. The provider will give instructions on whether you need to be tested and on where to go to for care and testing.

If instructed to seek care, follow the precautionary advice of the medical provider before going into any health facility, the state advises.

Certain people are at higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19, including older adults, especially those over 80; and those with chronic medical conditions such as heart, lung or kidney disease. Older adults who have chronic medical conditions are at the highest risk.

Illness can be severe and require hospitalization, but most individuals recover by resting, drinking plenty of liquids, and taking pain- and fever-reducing medications, according to the state.

Other advice from public health officials: • Stay home if you are sick.

• Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces such as desks, phones, doorknobs and rails.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. performance venues and concert halls — along with casinos and gyms are ordered to close under the same action. The time frame of the order can be extended.

Those businesses, if offering food or beverages, can allow up to five people inside at a time to pick up their orders as long as customers are at least 6 feet apart from one another, the state’s order says.

Airport food courts are exempt from the closures.

Testing on move The state’s first community testing center for COVID-19 opened March 11, and it’s now planned to move to locations throughout Colorado.

After moving from its drive-up location in Denver’s Lowry neighborhood and reopening days later at the Denver Coliseum, the testing operation was to reopen in locations throughout the state, first focusing on Colorado’s mountain communities, which have seen some of the most rapid spread of COVID-19 in the state.

The Telluride area and Routt County are among the first targets for the test site this week, and after that, the state will identify its next location.

On March 17, the state was scheduled to open a testing site outside Telluride that will serve about 100 high-risk patients who were pre-selected by area health care providers as priority, a state news release said. The site will not accept walk-up or driveup patients.

Coloradans can see upcoming locations, when they’re decided, at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s website. The public can call 303-389-1687 or email COHELP@ RMPDC.org for questions about criteria to be tested for COVID-19.

Private labs can do testing in Colorado as well, so Coloradans should call

their doctors to see which option is best.

Although the criteria are meant to help health care providers decide whether to recommend testing, people can be tested as long as they have a doctor’s order for it, state officials said March 16.

The state Public Health Department is also sending testing kits to other mountain counties to increase testing capacity, the release said. The department received more testing kits from the CDC this week, which are being distributed around the state.

More nursing power Colorado welcomed 50 nurses dedicated to helping with the state’s COVID-19 response, the state announced March 16.

These nurses, from the Freedom Health Care Staffing Company, will initially staff testing sites and health care facilities. This effort was made possible by a portion of the money from the Disaster Emergency Fund that was directed by Polis’ March 11 executive order.

Polis announced executive action last week to cut “through red tape” so that medical professionals who are licensed in other states but reside in Colorado can practice medicine here to address the strain on the state’s health care system.

The state Department of Public Health has also authorized every paramedic and emergency medical technician, or EMT, in the state to be able to administer the COVID-19 test.

Nursing, assisted living facilities The state restricted all visitors at skilled nursing, assisted living and intermediate care facilities, a news release March 14 announced.

The order requires these facilities to offer virtual communication tools and provide staff to assist residents with those tools; to document symptom screening for all individuals entering the building; and, if the facility has a positive or suspected positive case of COVID-19, the facility will keep visitation records to prevent exposure to other residents.

People who are older or have underlying chronic health conditions are more at risk of becoming very sick or dying from COVID-19.

“It is important to note that at this time there have not been any confirmed cases of COVID-19 in these Colorado facilities,” Randy Kuykendall, a division director with the state Public Health Department, said in a news release. The order “is an important step to continue to protect the health and well-being of this vulnerable population.”

Mountain, ski areas Due to extensive spread of COVID-19 in mountain resort areas, the department “strongly recommends” that anyone who lives in or has visited those communities in the past week minimize contact with other people, a news release said March 15.

That applies to Eagle, Summit, Pitkin, or Gunnison counties, whether or not people are experiencing symptoms.

Parker shuts down facilities STATE

Over the course of one week, government agencies went from partially closing or limiting access to some of its facilities to full-on closures and cancellations due to the spread of COVID-19 in nearby communities.

The town issued a declaration of a local disaster emergency March 13, which allows the town to activate local and interjurisdictional disaster emergency plans and authorize aid and assistance under those plans. Town Administrator Michelle Kivela made the declaration. Parker Town Council approved the resolution supporting the measure March 16.

As of March 16, the Tri-County Health Department reported three Parker residents were being treated after testing positive for COVID-19, bringing Douglas County’s total to eight. These are the first known presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in Parker. Tri-County stated its epidemiologists are working with 27 people from Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties who tested positive for COVID-19.

The Town of Parker has closed its high-traffic facilities through the end of March. All Parker Arts facilities, including the PACE Center and the Schoolhouse on Mainstreet, are closed through the end of March for now. The Parker Recreation Center and the Parker Fieldhouse are both closed through March 27, according to an update from the town’s website, parkeronline.org. The Parker Police Department announced it has closed its front office indefinitely.

The Douglas County School District announced March 12 it will extend spring break through March 27 as well.

Among other school-sponsored shows and events the district canceled include the Shine Summit, a conference to empower girls originally planned to be held at Legend High School March 13. All Colorado High School Activities Association sports have been suspended through at least April 6. All remaining state basketball tournaments were canceled as well.

On March 15, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended against gatherings of 50 or more people.

WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS? Coronavirus is a family of viruses named for the microscopic view of crownlike spikes on their surfaces, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

These viruses can cause the common cold or more severe diseases such as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome), which have seen outbreaks in the past, according to the CDC. COVID-19 — standing for “coronavirus disease 2019” — first appeared in late 2019 in Wuhan, China.

Symptoms of COVID-19 can include fever, cough and breathing trouble. Most people develop only mild symptoms, according to Denver Public Health.

But according to the CDC, some — usually those with severe underlying health conditions or older adults — develop more serious symptoms, including pneumonia, which can be fatal.

Technically, COVID-19 is caused by a virus named SARS-CoV-2.

Those with symptoms — cough, fever, and shortness of breath — must be isolated for at least seven to 10 days after symptoms began.

“It is only safe to leave isolation if your symptoms are improving and you don’t have a fever for 72 hours immediately prior to the end of your isolation,” the release said.

Residents and visitors of those areas are advised to stay home or in a comparable setting as much as possible, work from home or stay at least 6 feet from others, avoid group settings, only go to public spaces for necessities such as groceries and the pharmacy, and continue non-group activities such as walking, hiking, jogging, cycling.

On March 14, Polis issued an executive order directing downhill ski resorts to suspend operations for one week.

School closures, other measures The governor had already announced rules for K-12 school closures and actions to ensure Coloradans can afford getting tested for COVID-19.

The Colorado Department of Education received a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to continue serving free and reduced meals to students while schools are closed, Polis announced March 16.

On March 16, the state Public Health Department recommended that when school is closed, kids and adults should practice “social distancing” — aim to stay 6 feet away from others as much as possible.

“Do not take children into any social setting when they are sick,” the department said in a

news release.

“This is not just about keeping kids safe, which is absolutely important; it’s about keeping the whole community safe by limiting and slowing the spread,” Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist, said in the release.

More assured Originally, COVID-19 cases were referred to as presumptive positive because initial testing is done at the state level, and results were to be confirmed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC. But the CDC confirmed the state no longer needs to wait for confirmation because the test the CDC performs is identical to the state’s testing, the state announced.

The state listed that test results were completed on about 1,216 people by the state lab since testing started on Feb. 28.

As Colorado’s number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 rose to 131 — and amid the state’s first death due to the disease — the state Legislature decided to shut down until at least March 30.

Lawmakers passed a resolution March 14 to adjourn for roughly two weeks, according to a release from state House Democrats spokesman Jarrett Freedman.

The Capitol was closed to the public March 16 and 17, and crews were to clean all areas per guidelines by the state and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a state news release. Staff and media members were to be allowed in the building during that time.

Staff suspended Capitol tours indefinitely as of March 13, according to Theresa Holst, manager of visitor services at the Capitol.

School districts, high school sports, libraries, recreation centers and some large gatherings in the Denver metro area had all temporarily shut down, been canceled or were postponed amid the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by a widespread coronavirus.

The state was likely on “the verge of a tipping point” where it will see more widespread person-to-person transmission of the illness, Gov. Jared Polis said at a March 11 news conference.

The Legislature has yet to finish work on some of its highest-profile bills, including the annual state budget and the “Colorado option” — Democrats’ proposal for a health insurance plan that is offered by private insurers but designed by the state. The Legislature was about halfway through its regular session, the four-month period of the year in which it passes laws.

“It’s a bit unclear whether or not the session can be extended past (early) May,” Freedman said, noting that there are legal questions surrounding that possibility. Lawmakers plan to ask the Colorado Supreme Court to clarify.

All bills still on the table will remain in place until the Legislature reconvenes, Freedman said. The recess may be extended if coronavirus concerns are serious enough, he said.

The decision to shut down was made by both Republicans and Democrats after the Legislature’s consultation with public health officials.

“House and Senate leaders have been talking throughout the day collaboratively to arrive at this pathway forward,” said Freedman, who described the decision as bipartisan.

“I appreciate the bipartisan cooperation we have had in crafting the resolution to recess,” state Senate minority leader Chris Holbert, R-Douglas County, said in a news release. “This crisis has reminded us that while legislators have an important role in our state government, our being in session is not critical to the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s better that we adjourn and relieve the public of the burden of advocating for or against legislation at the Capitol until this crisis subsides.”

Parents react to shutdown of schools in Douglas County

Gerald Knowles sat in his car, like several parents around him, waiting to pick up his child from Cresthill Middle School on the last day of school before the Douglas County School District shut down for two weeks.

Amid coronavirus concerns, the district announced it will go into its regularly scheduled spring break on March 16 but remain closed for at least an additional week, through March 27. Schools will conduct education remotely in that time while facilities are deep-cleaned. As that date grows closer, district leadership will decide whether schools should reopen on March 30.

Parents said they believe the district made the right call in closing down, but they had mixed reactions about the effect it will have on students and families.

“I don’t think it’s a big deal,” Knowles said. “As long as they put the assignments out.”

Felipe Sierra is less certain. His 12-year-old daughter, a seventh-

grader at Cresthill, moved from California to Douglas County in the fifth grade, behind in her academics.

She attended Lone Tree Elementary before moving to Cresthill in Highlands Ranch. Both schools were instrumental in helping her improve, Sierra said, and with some hard work of her own, she is now caught up and earning As and Bs. Learning remotely might be hard for her or other students who rely on working closely with teachers, he said.

“It’s definitely going to have some impact on her. I know that, because she’s used to some help,” he said.

The closure will also change their work life. Sierra’s wife will need to stay home from work meetings she’d typically attend with him as they grow their maintenance and general contracting business.

Angela Lancaster said teaching children remotely could have good and bad effects. Children might not learn as well without the structure of being in school, and there are more distractions at home, she said. Still, Lan-

caster believes the responsibility will be a good lesson for her 13-year-old son, an eighth-grader at Cresthill.

“I think it’s a good alternative, given what’s going on,” she said.

“I don’t have any bad feeling about it, because I just feel they’re (DCSD) being smart.”

Lancaster hopes the community will stay calm as the virus spreads. Sierra said they’re teaching their daughter proper hygiene.

She attends church weekly with her grandmother.

“Everyone has someone who could really be hurt by this,” Lancaster said.

Lam Doan, whose 13-year-old son attends the seventh grade at Cresthill, agreed.

He believes closing was the smart thing for the community’s health and safety, and he’s not stressed about the school year potentially taking longer. He does worry the community cancellations will worry residents and hopes people won’t panic.

“Yes for safety. I 100% agree,” he said. “I know this virus is an unknown virus, so people are scared.”

The closure will affect the Before and After Care program, or BASE, preschools, outdoor education and any DCSD-sponsored spring break activities, field trips, camps and facility rentals.

The district urged the community to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations and to wash hands regularly.

An email to the school community from Superintendent Thomas Tucker provided to Colorado Community Media said student attendance was strongly encouraged on March 13, when students would receive instructions for remote learning during the week of March 23-27. Tucker urged parents and students to pick up any needed personal items before the end of school on March 13.

Nearby districts including Denver Public Schools, Cherry Creek School District and Jefferson Public Schools also announced on March 12 they would extend spring breaks.

Jefferson Public Schools will transition to continuing education remotely next week, according to a district announcement, closing from March 16-20 before its spring break runs from March 23-27.

Cherry Creek Superintendent Scott Siegfried said in an announcement the district would send follow-up communications concerning issues including emergency meals and access to online education resources. Cherry Creek Schools will close from March 13-27.

Denver Public Schools is closing for three weeks, from March 16 through April 7. Superintendents said the decision was difficult but came amid consultation with public health officials.

Senior living communities taking extra precautions Facilities in south metro area look to reduce residents’ risk of contracting COVID-19

Senior living facilities throughout the south metro area are taking extra precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, a virus that can bring serious health complications for older adults.

For the most part, visiting hours have been limited and events canceled.

Facilities are upping their cleaning and disinfecting efforts and reminding staff to be aware of respiratory and flu-like symptoms.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states it is extra important for people in vulnerable groups to take action to reduce the risk of contracting the disease caused by a coronavirus, COVID-19. People with heart disease, diabetes and lung disease are also at higher risk of becoming severely sick from this illness.

MorningStar Senior Living, Wind Crest retirement community and Brookdale Senior Living have posted messages to residents and their families on their respective websites about the preventative measures being taken and reminders to take steps to help curb the spread of the virus.

These and other senior living facilities in the area are focusing on prevention and containment. Their actions include sending informational letters out to residents and their families, additional training for staff, stocking up on disinfectant and cleaning supplies,

boosted cleaning frequency and posted extra signage throughout the facility.

MorningStar — which has locations throughout the metro area, including in Lone Tree, Parker and Centennial — will limit resident outings and visiting hours and has canceled all largescale events and outside entertainers.

“We believe these protocols are a wise and necessary part of protecting the populations we serve. We ask you to partner with us for the sake of our seniors,” MorningStar CEO Ken Jaeger states on the facility’s website.

Wind Crest, in Highlands Ranch, stated it is taking “unprecedented action” in response to the virus.

“Although we have no reported cases, we are acting with an abundance of caution and taking every precautionary measure necessary, consistent with CDC guidelines, in response to this serious public health concern,” Wind Crest spokesperson Courtney

Benhoff stated in a March 12 email.

Wind Crest stated it will be screening visitors prior to entry to the facility. It is also temporarily suspending all large on-campus sales events and activities that include outside groups.

Brookdale stated it has a corporate emergency response team in place to provide support to local staffs in the event of a confirmed COVID-19 case.

‘The panic is here’ in stores around area Locals scramble for essential items amid outbreak of novel coronavirus

Lori Gifford approached the milk refrigerator at the back of a King Soopers Marketplace in Parker March 13 and scanned the empty shelves that once held a variety of products, looking for organic milk to no avail.

The King Soopers at 117761 Cottonwood Drive was bustling with shoppers stocking up on food at the end of the first week when the country saw mass cancellations and closures due to the spread of COVID-19. Entire aisles of products were decimated that Friday afternoon as workers carried cardboard boxes up and down walkways to replenish what they could.

A lifelong Coloradan from Parker and a health care professional, Gifford said she has never seen a reaction like this to a contagion. The number of COVID-19 cases continued to rise in Colorado and throughout the United States, prompting schools to close and events to be canceled.

“The panic is here, and that’s what we have to deal with now,” Gifford said. “They exited Douglas County Schools now, so we have to plan for family being home and eating.”

Grocery stores and supermarkets throughout the Denver metro area were quickly running out of certain products, including toilet paper, hand sanitizer and cleansing wipes. As the spread of the novel coronavirus forced school closures and event cancellations and prompted employers to encourage work-from-home options, people began scouring shelves for essential food items as well. Bryant Nguyen, of Centennial, said the COVID-19 outbreak has affected his day-to-day life. Instead of going to his gym, he works out from home.

He works from home now as well. He said he didn’t stock up on anything in particular, except some frozen foods to store for later.

“It’s definitely affecting all aspects of life,” Nguyen said. “It’s been pretty comprehensive. Just trying to stay safe, wash hands. Purell and Lysol wipes are hard to come by, but we’re trying to get our hands on that.”

One King Soopers customer service representative said the store ran out of toilet paper the morning of March 13 and did not anticipate restocking until the next truck arrived the following night.

A Target representative said the

store in Lone Tree had been out of toilet paper since about an hour after opening and recommended people get to the store early if they want to buy the item.

Walmart announced March 10 on its corporate website that it will work to stay stocked and keep prices fair. The store will be diverting certain products to areas most in need of replenished inventory.

The largest private employer in the United States, Walmart is also taking measures to protect its employees.

Workers are asked to stay home if sick and the store will provide pay options and support if a worker is diagnosed with COVID-19.

Major supermarket outlets, like Walmart, King Soopers and Target, have all authorized managers to decide on a consumer limit on certain products. Items like bottled water and toilet paper are available on an item-

per-customer limit.

Bonnie Lee, a mother of seven from Elbert County, said she expects her adult children to come home if the spread of the virus continues because they may not be as prepared as their mother.

“I’m just going to get groceries while I can and I’m going to go home and wait it out,” Lee said. “And put my trust in Jesus.”

Kevin Donovan, of Englewood, said he wishes people would be more considerate of their neighbors when shopping during this stressful time.

“We live in an individualistic society, where everybody is out for themselves,” said Donovan, who was shopping for produce March 13 at the King Soopers at 3495 S. University Blvd. “I would like to see more of a community approach. We shouldn’t hoard all of the toilet paper. We shouldn’t hoard all of the paper towels. Let’s just share with our community — that is what I want to see.”

Josh Shepard, assistant manager of the same Englewood King Soopers where Donovan was shopping, said the day was “absolutely nuts,” listing numerous items the store was out of or that were almost gone, including meat, water, frozen foods and, of course, toilet paper. He also brought light to what many store workers are going through during the recent shopping frenzy.

“I live out in Aurora, so I have not been able to see my family a lot, because I am here,” said Shepard, adding that he gets one day a week off.

“But making money is what I have to do.”

The state’s first community testing center for COVID-19 opened March 11, and it’s now planned to move to locations throughout Colorado.

The drive-up center operated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment was first located at 8100 E. Lowry Blvd., in Denver’s Lowry neighborhood. The state reopened the site March 14 in a new location at the Denver Coliseum.

It was moved for safety and logistical reasons, according to the state, and was staffed by a National Guard medical team. The drive-up testing was planned to be open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. but saw early closures due to the high number of cars in line.

After March 14, the drive-up testing operation was to be moved to locations throughout the state. See upcoming locations at www.colorado.

Private labs can do testing now in Colorado as well, so Coloradans should call their doctors to see which option is best.

To be tested for COVID-19, people generally must meet one of seven criteria, according to the state Public Health Department. Call or email the above contacts to ask about the most current criteria.

As of the last update, those were: • Having fever or signs of lower respiratory illness, such as cough or shortness of breath, and having close contact with a laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patient within 14 days of showing symptoms, or: • Having fever or signs of lower respiratory illness without a diag-

nosis that could explain them, such as influenza, and having a history of travel to areas with ongoing community spread of COVID-19 within 14 days of showing symptoms, or: • Any person who is hospitalized and also has fever or signs of lower respiratory illness without a diagnosis that could explain it, or: • Anyone who lives in a residential facility such as a nursing home and also has fever or signs of lower respiratory illness without a diagnosis that could explain it, or: • Any health care worker, clinical laboratory worker or first responder who has new onset of symptoms within 14 days of having direct contact with patients who have signs of respiratory illness or their clinical specimens; and also has fever or signs of lower respiratory illness without a diagnosis that could explain it, or; • Anyone who is at risk of severe

illness due to COVID-19, including adults 65 and older, and those with chronic medical conditions or who are receiving immunosuppressive medications; and also has fever or signs of a lower respiratory illness without a diagnosis that could explain it, or; • Any person in a group with multiple individuals with symptoms that is being investigated by public health officials; and also has fever or signs of lower respiratory illness.

Although the criteria are guidelines to help health care providers decide whether to recommend testing, people can be tested as long as they have a doctor’s order for it. Anyone considering being tested should consult their doctor.

Tri-County health director has respiratory illness John Douglas takes precautions but opts against COVID-19 test

When local officials from the TriCounty Health Department’s jurisdiction — which serves more than 1.5 million people — gathered in Douglas County and livestreamed a “virtual town hall” about the COVID-19 pandemic, there was one notable absence.

John Douglas, Tri-County’s executive director, joined by Skype from his home while other public health officials sat in front of cameras in the Douglas County commissioners’ hearing room.

The head of Colorado’s largest health department was sick with a respiratory illness on March 11.

He chose to practice what he’s been preaching during the COVID-19 outbreak by staying home while ill and avoiding spreading germs to others.

No, he doesn’t know if he is sick with COVID-19.

Douglas has not been tested for the novel coronavirus sweeping the globe because testing, he said, is still limited.

to help me understand how long I should self-isolate and because I am very curious,” Douglas said by email.

“However, while we are doing our best to help support broader access, testing is still limited, and I don’t want to compete for testing resources for those with a great need to know.”

Those individuals include anyone who has traveled to high-risk areas, has a known exposure to someone with COVID-19, or has a greater chance of exposing a vulnerable population, such as health care workers.

As of March 13, Douglas was still at home, isolating himself and “acting as though I am potentially contagious with something.” He’ll do so until he feels better, and is taking precautions around his healthy family members, he said.

Testing capabilities were in the spotlight on March 13 as Gov. Jared Polis held a news conference where he spoke at length about the state’s progress in testing people for COVID-19 and the need for more testing in Colorado and across the nation.

“We need to dramatically increase our testing capacity. Frankly, we needed to dramatically increase our testing capacity months ago,” Polis said.

Polis said he expressed his frustrations to Vice President Mike Pence, and added that he believes a lack of early action in Washington to set up mass testing capabilities “has hampered our ability to avoid mass disruption to our lives and economy.”

Polis characterized testing as a crucial step in providing epidemiologists more information on the virus and a clearer picture of the virus’s spread in the state. It also helps inform people who are infected, and makes sure they know what to do.

The state’s capacity for testing has increased recently. Private labs are now able to offer COVID-19 tests and the state now has two drive-through testing labs. But demand is high.

Colorado’s first drive-up testing lab in Lowry closed early on March 12 because of high volume. The center served more than 650 people in two days. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced March 12 it would determine the best cut-off in a lengthy line of cars with occupants waiting three or more hours to be seen. Those waiting in line but not served on March 12 would have priority the following day.

At the time of Polis’ March 13 news conference, the lab had not reopened because of inclement weather. Still, the governor had activated the National Guard, from which medics are conducting training to administer tests around the state. Training was underway March 13. The state announced later on March 13 it would reopen the drive-through center at a new location — the Denver Coliseum — on March 14.

Pitkin County opened a mobile lab that was operational March 13, Polis said.

The governor urged Colorado residents to stay aware of the latest COVID-19 updates. The virus will continue to spread, he said, and most people will know someone who becomes infected. He also stressed the need to avoid panic and stay calm.

The majority of cases will remain mild and most people will experience minor symptoms. Stopping COVID-19’s spread is important to protect vulnerable populations and to prevent the healthcare system from growing overwhelmed, he said.

Anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19 is encouraged to call his or her doctor first for guidance on how to manage their illness. A doctor’s note is required for the drive-through testing centers and people should not seek testing without first consulting their health care provider.

Those who have been tested should stay home until they receive results.

Anyone whose test is positive needs to stay home at least two weeks, Polis said.

“We want to continue to push the federal government as well as the private-sector partners to scale up testing,” Polis said. “Aggressive and sustained testing is a powerful tool for fighting the virus.”

Community is key to battling COVID-19

Store shelves without essential goods, including bread, eggs and toilet paper.

Events and ball games canceled. Libraries and recreation centers closed.

A collective feeling of tension and uncertainty as the world, right down to our own communities, suddenly has become a different place.

In little more than a week, Colorado went from no reported cases of COVID-19 to more than 100, a mark that was surpassed March 14. None of our Denver metro area counties has been spared by the pandemic, with multiple

OUR VIEW cases reported in Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties and more.

This is a time in which physical isolation, sometimes in the form of imposing a self-quarantine, is becoming increasingly necessary.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says symptoms of COVID-19 can include a cough, fever and shortness of breath. If you can, get tested for the virus. But the CDC urges you to stay home, except to get medical care, even if you just suspect that you have been infected.

We applaud those of you who are tak-

ing crucial precautions, be it avoiding crowds, a self-quarantine or the necessity of carefully washing your hands with soap and water. This is a time when community members need each other more than ever, and everyone must do his or her part.

So what can you do? Tips and recommendations are too numerous to list here — find much more at www.cdc. gov — but here are a few we would like to highlight: Help protect older adults, whom the CDC has identified as being particularly at risk from COVID-19. Maybe you are under the weather but don’t think much of it — well, please think again.

eople make new decisions based on new information. And sometimes, what we think are difficult decisions to make as we face a trying or challenging time, become much easier to make when we receive the right inforWINNING mation and new data.

WORDS For the past few weeks, individuals, businesses of all sizes, organizations and schools have all wrestled with difficult decisions. Do I travel?

Do I go to work? Do we restrict our people from coming to work?

Do we place a ban on Michael Norton company travel? Do we cancel events and conferences? Do we not attend those events or conferences?

Those are all behavior-based decisions. Should we or shouldn’t we do or attend something? Just within the past two weeks many were still trying to minimize the outbreak or impact of the coronavirus. While some clos-

ings and events were canceled and people had no choice or decision to make about going somewhere or doing something like showing up to work or attending class, others still pressed on and went to concerts, conferences, work, and other events and gatherings where many people were together.

They still made the decision to shake hands, give hugs, and live and work as they always did.

And these behavior-based decisions were sometimes made because people believed they had to do what they needed to do in order to survive and provide for their families. These were difficult decisions for many people, and they were difficult decisions made in the face of a difficult situation.

Then there was new information.

Those behavior-based decisions were replaced with belief-based and knowledge-based decisions. The spread of the virus became a pandemic. The stock market went into a free fall. This all became very real for those who chose not to believe.

If everyone calms down, and stops hoarding, there will be enough supplies for everyone. Do we really want to create a recession, folks?

Tell me: Who swears by a moisturizer?

What exactly is a moisturizer?

Is here a man alive who can say the word “moisturizer” with a straight face? My father never said the word “moisturizer.”

Like father like son.

You’re not going to hear me say “moisturizer.”

I’m one of the QUIET lucky ones. My DESPERATION father didn’t work at a moisturizer factory. If he had worked at a moisturizer factory, I’d have to say “moisturizer factory” whenever I was asked where my father worked.

Maybe there are Craig Marshall other jobs a father Smith could have that his son would hate to admit to.

“He makes automobile scent diffusers.”

“What?”

“You know? Those little pine trees you hang from the rear view mirror.”

A moisturizer is a lotion or cream that prevents dry skin.

So does St. Louis. Ever been there?

Dry skin in St. Louis is an impossibility.

Could you live there? I couldn’t.

It would be double trouble for a curmudgeon. Walk out at dawn to pick the morning paper off the driveway and watch rivulets of human dew run down your arms and splash on the daily. No thanks.

Is moisturizer sold in Missouri?

I don’t swear by anything because I don’t swear. I leave that to others. There’s plenty of it already.

Oh, I might swear when I’m alone, but never in public.

Swearing is so commonplace in films that your kids can hear the brunt of it in just about anything that’s made these days.

Remember one of Rhett’s last words to Scarlett? That was a big deal in 1939.

Not now.

Swearing is easy. One word in particular gets used as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, and floor polish.

It is used so often it has no meaning. Just like maraschino cherries.

Those of us who moved forward with our daily behaviors and work patterns now found ourselves making much easier decisions.

It’s time to stay home, it’s time to keep a safe distance, it’s time to wash our hands more than we have ever washed them before. It’s time to let make better decisions for ourselves, our neighbors, and our businesses.

Here’s another belief-based decision we can make. It may seem harder for some and easier for others. We need to make the decision

I only know where Croatia is; I don’t know where Slovenia is.

In another month or two, you’ll hear someone say, “We need the moisture.”

Then, after it rains, you’ll hear someone say, “We needed the moisture.”

Observations like this should be felonious.

Along with, “Hot enough for you?”

And the broken-record kid at the checkout stand who says, “Have a nice day” to everyone who comes

to maintain our mind, our body, and our spirit. In this difficult time, we need to make the easy decision to stay positive in every aspect of our lives. Our behavior-based decisions will now look and sound like this: I can work remotely and still be productive; I can use more virtual technology and not get on airplanes for a little while; I can keep learning and complete my classes online if I need to; and I can probably survive emotionally without giving out handshakes and hugs for a while.

Staying positive in a seemingly negative situation is a decision.

And to do that we need to make sure that we are making new decisions based on new information and making certain that the information

is coming from a reliable source.

And there are other things we can do like choosing to do more reading of books we have been meaning to read; listening to uplifting and positive podcasts; spending time in prayer, meditation, or silence; eating healthier; maintaining some level of exercise at home even if we can’t go to the gym.

As we sit here today, there are restrictions and conditions we are forced to live with. And many of those restrictions and conditions were difficult decisions made by government agencies. They were made to try and protect us to the best of their ability. Even if it means economic hardships for a while. And for us it comes down to the decision

we will make, and how we choose to handle this and respond to it.

So how about you? Are you making new decisions based on new information? Are you making the decision to take care of your mind, body, and spirit during this difficult time? Though religion and tastes are changing, old instruments still command awe

O

utside Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Denver, the din of the city roars.

But inside the old church, a stone anachronism in a canyon of steel and glass, there is silence.

Organist Norm Sutphin walks into the cavernous sanctuary, lit only by the glow of sunshine through stained glass. He sits at a bench at the center of the altar, towered over by organ pipes stretching three stories high. He flips a switch, and a breath of air cuts the silence, just slightly.

Sutphin begins to play, and the sanctuary is suddenly alive with the majesty of Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in D Minor, the low notes rattling hymnals in the pews.

“This instrument can rouse emotions in the soul like few other things,” Sutphin said. “I appreciate its beauty, and I respect its power.”

The pipe organ is one of the largest in Denver, and perhaps the oldest. Built in 1888, it consists of 4,275 pipes in 82 sections. The smallest are just inches long. The tallest, low C, is 32 feet.

The Roosevelt organ, which Sutphin calls “one of the monuments of organ building in the West,” is one of many mighty pipe organs scattered around the Denver metro area.

But, Sutphin said, as traditional religious denominations and traditional church music decline, he is part of a diminishing family of organists who still command the power of the world’s largest musical instruments.

“I work very hard to make sure my performances are tight,” said Sutphin, who practices up to six days a week in preparation for Sunday. “It means a lot to people.”

Organs in history They still mean a lot to Rick Morel, a third-generation pipe organ builder and repairman. Morel is one of three remaining members of Morel and Associates, one of few remaining pipe organ repair shops in the Mountain West.

In an aging warehouse in north Denver, Morel cleans, tunes and repairs pipe organs, using decades-old tools, many of which are handmade.

Pipe organs are marvels of engineering, Morel said.

“The people who designed these were as smart as any computer engineer designing microchips today,” he said. “They can make so many sounds.

No other single instrument has so much range.”

Morel said. “We haven’t built an organ since the 1990s. A lot of the old churches are on hard times, and organs can be expensive to maintain.”

Morel said he’s got two or three restoration jobs left, and then it’s probably time to close up the multigenerational business.

“We can’t find anyone who wants to take it over,” Morel said. “This is a labor of love. You don’t do it to get rich. And if you’re not willing to run out in a blizzard to do an emergency repair on Christmas Eve, then you’re not living up to the standards we hold ourselves to.”

“In the silent film era, any theater worth its salt had a pipe organ.

Beyond a soundtrack of mood music, they could make so many sound effects: boat horns, sirens, even waves and pounding surf.”

The early 20th century saw an explosion of similar instruments, including automatic organs that even included banjos, violins and other instruments played mechanically.

Denver had some legendary organs.

The old City Auditorium, which today is part of the Denver Center for Performing Arts, was home to a colossal,

four-story organ. The City of Denver employed a “city organist” who gave recitals as often as seven days a week some summers.

The Phipps Mansion in Denver’s Belcaro neighborhood featured an automatic organ in the basement that could be controlled by switches throughout the house, and could play a variety of contemporary and classic tunes.

The advent of talking movies, the Great Depression and metal rationing during World War II spelled a downturn for pipe organs, but pent-up demand and a surge of suburban church building in the postwar years meant an explosion in the organ market. It would prove to be the last.

“Tastes in church music are changing, and they have been for a while,”

Old and new Some of the postwar suburban churches are still mighty proud of their pipe organs, and finding ways to incorporate them into modern worship.

At Ascension Lutheran Church in Littleton, the 1950s-vintage pipe organ is still a draw for parishioners, said Michael Zehnder, the church’s director of music ministries.

The church now holds two services every week: a traditional service built around a pipe organ performance, and a contemporary service built around modern music. Zehnder also leads several choirs and handbell choruses.

“I’m a pastor’s son, and when contemporary music came along in the 1970s, it seemed so wrong to me,” Zehnder said. “But time and again in the Scripture, we see passages about making joyous music to celebrate God. We read about drums, cymbals, harps and trumpets. Martin Luther said, ‘Next to the word of God, I give music the highest praise.’”

Zehnder sees the organ as a bridge to the church’s past, and a way to preserve hymns that date to medieval times.

“It’s a way to feel the awe of God,” Zehnder said.

Commissioner candidates prepare for election

Candidates hoping to be the next commissioners of Douglas County are preparing for the election as the deadline to file as part of a major party passed March 17.

The two seats up for election are in Districts 2 and 3 and are for four-year terms. In District 2, current commissioner and chairman of the board, Roger Partridge, is term-limited and will be vacating the seat.

Four candidates, including two Republicans, one Democrat and one Libertarian, have entered the race to replace him. As of press time, there was still one more day for candidates of major parties to enter the race. The deadline to file for minor party candidate petitions is April 6.

Republican Lora Thomas, the current commissioner in District 3, will be running for a second term. She is contested in the election by entrepreneur Darian Wilson, who is running as a Democrat.

As of the most recent reporting period in November, no money had been raised in the race for the District 2 seat.

In the Thomas and Wilson election, about $80,000 was raised by November with about half coming of that from each candidate. The next campaign finance report from all candidates will be due June 9.

District 2 The candidates for District 2 include Republican Clint Dorris, a former senior manager at the Pentagon, and Republican George Teal, a Castle Rock councilmember.

Dorris, who was selected by the current commissioners to lead a committee in giving $10 million to schools for security, used to work in a Pentagon surveillance task force. If elected, Dorris intends to never raise taxes, support Second Amendment rights, plan for the future in terms of natural resources like water, and work to bring high-paying jobs to the county, he said.

“I don’t know any more important thing in our society than our families,” Dorris said.

Teal, who is a representative for Douglas County in the two-year-long Reimagine RTD initiative, emphasizes transportation, mitigating negative effects of growth, water management and low taxes on his campaign website, among other issues.

“I have an amazing team of supporters pitching in, and I look forward to campaigning on the issues Douglas County voters care about,” Teal said.

The other two candidates in the District 2 race are Democrat Lisa NealGraves, the former chief innovation officer for the Colorado Attorney General’s office, and Libertarian Victoria Reynolds, who is the chairman of the

Libertarian Party of Colorado.

Neal-Graves, who has also worked in the tech industry as both a computer scientist and a lawyer, is focusing on three pillars in her campaign: innovation for problems like traffic and water shortages, building a sense of community, and planning sustainably.

“The bottom line for me is that I’m running because I believe Douglas County is a wonderful place to live and I’d like to keep it that way,” she said. “I think generally it’s time for something new.”

Reynolds, who has spent her career in finance, decided to run largely because of concerns around Douglas County’s taxes and spending and the state’s new “red flag” law, she said.

“I think most people in Douglas County are libertarian even if they are registered Republicans, Democrats or unaffiliated,” she said. “It’s exactly what the people in Douglas County want … we want the government out of our lives.”

District 3 In District 3, incumbent Thomas will go up against Wilson.

Thomas, who ran her campaign in 2016 on promises of transportation and road improvements, strongly supported ballot item 1A, which transferred part of sales tax revenue from the justice center to roads. Other issues she’s

focused on as a commissioner include splitting the 18th Judicial District, expanding water capacity at Chatfield Reservoir and providing $10 million to schools for safety.

If she wins a second term, Thomas plans to help find needed wastewater solutions, expand mental health initiatives and improve economic development by bringing high-paying jobs to the county, she said.

“I’ve been here for three years. I’m not drinking from a fire hose anymore,” she said. “I’m able to work on projects now. I’m not having to learn the job.”

Wilson is running to improve representation of all Douglas County residents, she said.

“I think we should take needs and voices of everyone in the county, not just those who agree with us politically,” she said. “I want people to see there is a viable alternative.”

Wilson plans to work on improving health and safety, transparency, representation, conservation and economic development, she said.

“As a parent, I felt it was time for me to step up and offer my business experience and volunteer management experience to help the county,” she said.

The primary election will be June 30 and the general election will be Nov. 3, the same day as the presidential election.

Senior center welcomes new shuttle Efforts lasting more than a year come to fruition with safe, reliable ride

When Rich Foerester took the Parker Senior Center’s old shuttle bus in for oil changes and safety repairs in 2018, he did not expect to be leaving the mechanic with word that the 2006 Ford Starcrast E450 would need an extra $4,000 in repairs.

Foerester paid $800 for necessary changes but quickly came to realize that the senior center desperately needed a new mode of transportation.

Since purchasing the bus in 2016, the senior center had sunk $10,000 total into repairs.

Foerester, a member of the center’s board of directors, started fundraising for a new bus last February. After more than a year of efforts, the senior center now boasts its shiny new shuttle, a white, 14-passenger bus. It is parked at the senior center facility, 10675 Longs Way. The new shuttle will allow the senior center to commit to longer trips without the fear of breaking down.

“We’re probably going to do a lot more trips and people will really enjoy it,” Foerester said.

The new bus has overhead storage,

a flat floor—without a bump from the bus tire—a wider front window and is wheelchair accessible.

The senior center purchased its first shuttle in 2016 for member trips across the Front Range and Colorado. The senior center’s field trips include tours of Cave of the Winds, the Denver Mint and local sports stadiums; events like the National Western Stock Show; and various museums, tea rooms and unique local venues.

“We just didn’t feel safe going in the mountains anymore,” said Rose Whalen, a bus coordinator for the senior center. “We just kind of felt limited in where we could go.”

The center typically does day trips but this year the center’s trip planners are sorting out details of a two-night trip to Palisade for the Palisade Peach Festival, which takes place in August.

The senior center has six volunteer drivers to help make its twice-weekly field trips throughout Colorado.

Sherri Anderson, one of the bus coordinators for the Parker Senior Center, said the center’s bus trips allow seniors to explore local treasures with their fellow members. Many of the seniors can’t drive much farther than the distance between their home and the senior center at the center of town.

Anderson attributes the bus trips to the Parker Senior Center’s continued rise in membership.

“A lot of it has to do with giving them ways to get out and see things,” Anderson said. “Most of them wouldn’t

COVID-19: What colleges, universities are doing

As with many institutions across the nation, Denver-area colleges and universities are taking precautions aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Here is a look at what schools are doing: Arapahoe Community College Spring break will be extended through March 30 to give the college time to transition to remote or online classes. Claire Dinneen’s daughters thought that worsening dementia was causing her growing confusion, but her doctor suspected something else.

Dr. Pei Chen asked them to round up medicines in the 89-year-old woman’s home and they returned with a huge haul. There were 28 drugs ordered by various doctors for various ailments, plus over-the-counter medicines. Chen spent a year sorting out which ones were truly needed and trimmed a dozen.

To her daughters’ surprise, Dinneen got better, able to remember more things and to offer advice on what to wear and how to raise their kids. Her symptoms were from “medication fog,” not her dementia getting worse, Chen told one daughter.

“I was just stunned,” Debbie Dinneen said. “No one had taken a look at the big picture” to see if medicines might be addling her mom, who lives near Berkeley, California.

“Unfortunately, it’s not unusual,” said Chen, a geriatrician at the University of California, San Francisco.

About 91% of people over 65 take at least one prescription medicine and 41% use five or more — what doctors call polypharmacy.

The risk of side effects or interactions rises with the number of pills, and one doctor often is unaware of what others have already prescribed for the same patient. Dinneen, for example, had two prescriptions for the same drug at different doses from different pharmacies.

“It’s very easy to miss medication side effects because they masquerade as all these other symptoms,” said Dr. Michael Steinman, another UCSF geriatrician.

He recently helped update an American Geriatrics Society list of potentially inappropriate medicines for older adults that can mimic dementia or make symptoms worse.

“Potentially” is the key word — the drugs on the list don’t always pose a problem, and no one should stop using any medicine without first checking with a doctor because that could do serious harm, Steinman stressed.

Doctors ‘de-prescribe’ medicines But some medicines don’t have a

strong reason to be used and their risks may outweigh their benefits for older people, he and other doctors say.

They often “de-prescribe” medicines that may no longer be needed or that once may have been OK but now may be causing problems.

The list includes certain types of muscle relaxants, antihistamines, allergy medicines, stomach acid remedies, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medicines, pain relievers, sleep aids and other common treatments.

Many of these drugs have anticholinergic effects — that is, they reduce or interfere with a chemical messenger that’s key to healthy nerve function. That can cause drowsiness, confusion, blurred vision, dizziness and other symptoms that impair thinking skills.

These drugs might be fine for a younger person, but “once someone is having even the tiniest difficulty with thinking and memory, then the effects of these drugs are just huge,” said Dr. Andrew Budson of Boston University’s Alzheimer’s disease center.

Sometimes side effects appear right away, but in other cases they only develop or show up with longer use.

Teacher accepted into NASA program

Bob MacArthur named Airborne Astronomy Ambassador

A Douglas County teacher is one of 28 teachers nationally and the only in Colorado selected to fly in a special NASA plane fitted with a one-of-a-kind telescope for astronomy research and science curriculum development.

Bob MacArthur will participate in the 2020 NASA Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors (AAA) program. The program’s 28 teachers from 13 states will undergo a week of training at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center Hangar 703 in Palmdale, California.

As part of the proMacArthur gram, teachers will participate in research flights on NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, or SOFIA. The Boeing 747 is modified to carry a 100-inch telescope and studies infrared light. At the end of the week, teachers help develop a physical science curriculum with the SETI Institute and teach it in their schools for two weeks.

Ahead of his trip, here’s five things to know about MacArthur and what his

participation in the program will mean for Douglas County.

Who is Bob MacArthur?

Bob MacArthur is an 11-year Highlands Ranch High School science teacher and 15-year Douglas County School District teaching veteran. He’s been in teaching for 18 years total. MacArthur teaches ninth through 12th grade and covers subjects ranging from geology to meteorology to earth science.

His reaction to making the program MacArthur applied for the program in mid-November. In mid-December, he was at home cooking dinner when his assistant principal sent him a text message: “Check your email,” she said.

“And there it was,” MacArthur recalled — a letter saying he was accepted into the Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors program. Excitedly, he called his wife over. “She like freaked out with me.”

“I was shocked, to be honest,” he said.

MacArthur then had to keep the big news confidential until the official announcement on Feb. 26.

His love for astronomy began in childhood MacArthur studied earth science and secondary education at Northern Arizona University. There, he also worked at Lowell Observatory, whose “claim to fame,” he said, was discovering Pluto.

He first learned about SOFIA from astronomers at Lowell Observatory who also worked on the plane.

But his love for studying how the

universe works began in childhood.

“My dad and grandfather were big into astronomy. We had telescopes, I was probably like a baby and my dad stuck me up to a telescope,” MacArthur said with a laugh. “But I remember looking through my dad’s telescope at Halley’s Comet in 1986. We’d have summer barbecues and we’d get the telescope out. Meteorology and astronomy have always been a big passion of mine.”

MacArthur now has five telescopes of his own and shares his love for astronomy with his four children, just like his dad did with him, he said.

“We go out observing and have fun nerding out,” he said.

What teachers will learn in AAA The 28 teachers are already meeting and working together through online webchats and courses. They are learning about the SETI Institute, the AAA program and taking an online astronomy course, MacArthur said.

This spring, when they spend a week in California, they’re promised at least one flight on SOFIA. “We’ll take off at sunset and we’ll be up all night, flying at 43,000 feet in the stratosphere doing infrared astronomy,” MacArthur said. “A typical flight could be five to eight hours.”

Flying at that altitude is imperative for infrared research, he said, because water vapor below that blocks out 90% of infrared waves, which can’t be seen with the human eye the way colors in a rainbow can.

“SOFIA itself, because it looks at wavelengths of light, looks at everything from studying planetary atmospheres, to studying dust clouds around stars and how solar systems form to star formations and nebulas, all the way to dust around galaxies and star forming centers, galaxy formation, and things like that,” he said. “So, it looks at a lot.”

How his experience will help Douglas County students MacArthur said a huge part of his teaching philosophy is rooted in experiential learning. He completed a master’s program in experiential learning that allowed him to travel and bring those experiences back to the classroom, and he expects to have the same ability after flying on SOFIA. “I actually take students on trips to Hawaii, Iceland, I’m all about getting my students to experience the science that I’m teaching,” he said. “Whether I can take them there to see the auroras in Iceland or Hawaii and the volcanos and the observatories, or myself having that experience, like with SOFIA and the Airborne Ambassador program, I can bring that experience to them.”

The curriculum developed through the program will fit in with state standards and help students understand more about the universe, he said.

“By learning more about infrared astronomy, it allows us to teach our student more about galaxy formation, planet formation, things like that,” he said.

Sheriff’s employee celebrates 45 years with office Lt. Larry Noble recognized by county commissioners during meeting

When Lt. Larry Noble started working at the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office in 1975, there were only 14 employees there. Including the sheriff himself.

The county only had about 14,600 people, and during some shifts, there was only one deputy available to cover all 844 square miles.

“You could go a whole shift without there being a call for service,” Noble said.

Forty-five years later, a lot has changed in Douglas County and Noble has been there through it all. Five sheriffs, three sheriff ’s office buildings and countless residents have come and gone during his tenure.

At a Feb. 25 county commissioners’ meeting, colleagues and friends of Noble spoke about his commitment to the sheriff ’s office as he celebrated his work anniversary.

“I always say I stand on the shoulders of giants,” Commissioner Abe Laydon said in the meeting. “And you are a giant in this profession and this community.”

“Larry is one of those guys that’s just very well-rounded and is very calming,” Spurlock said in an interview. “He had the skills to calm situations.”

As a child growing up in Littleton, Noble was always fascinated by first responders. He also found himself serving as an advocate for other kids.

“There would be kids at school who would get like picked on and nobody would be their friend,” he said. “I would stick up for them when they would be picked on.”

When he got older, he served as a member of the Arapahoe County Rescue Patrol.

“That’s kind of where I got my taste for emergency services,” he said.

Later he worked as an EMT and eventually moved over to the sheriff ’s office.

After 45 years, he’s about ready to retire, he said. A big part of the reason he has stayed in the job so long is so that he could secure Medicare, he said. Now that he’s 65, he’s likely to move out of the role within the next year.

In the next phase of his life, he plans to continue the volunteer work he does with ham radio and highaltitude balloon groups.

“Douglas County has been real good to me, it has been a family to me,” he said in the commissioners’ meeting.

“It’s going to be tough to go.”

Dave Weaver also spoke at the meeting about his experiences with Noble.

“He’s a remarkable man and the dedication and service that he has provided this county is second to none,” Weaver said of Noble.

Noble has worked in every division of the sheriff ’s office, beginning with his job as a dispatcher. A year after he was hired, he became a deputy.

Throughout his years on the job, he’s been on a number of notable calls for service. He responded to the Highlands Ranch Mansion when then-owner Lawrence Phipps had a heart attack.

He was also working the night of March 11, 1978 when the county courthouse burned down.

“I could see the glow of the fire in the sky,” he remembers.

Noble also had a part to play in the current judicial center in Castle Rock. He was sent by the county to visit other jails throughout the county and help develop a plan. His name is on a bronze plaque inside the facility.

“He wore a lot of different hats … to get us into modern policing. Larry played a major role in that,” Sheriff Tony Spurlock said at the commissioner meeting.

When Spurlock started with the sheriff ’s office, Noble had already been working there for about five years, Spurlock said. In their time on the job, the two have gotten to know

Basketball season ends without champions Some semifinal games had already been played before decision was made

There will be no 2020 Colorado state basketball champions.

After the girls semifinal games in the 3A, 4A and 5A classifications were played on March 12, the Colorado High School Activities Association canceled the remainder of the girls and boys state basketball tournaments in all classes.

CHSAA has maintained throughout the process of facing the COVID-19 pandemic that the tournaments would be finished unless a state agency or host venue made a decision affecting that status.

The University of Denver told CHSAA late on March 12 that the school would no longer be able to host the 3A tournament.

“Everything we’ve done up to this point was to try and keep the experience of a state basketball tournament for our student participants and high school communities,” CHSAA Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green said in a news release issued late the night of March 12. “In the face of this unprecedented public health emergency, we are compelled to discontinue play in all tournaments.”

There were two Class 5A and two 4A girls semifinal games that were held March 12 at the Denver Coliseum before the tournament was canceled.

The games were played with limited spectators allowed in the venues.

Holy Family defeated Green Mountain 38-31 in a 4A semifinal girls game.

Defending champion Mullen downed Berthoud 64-57 in the other 4A semifinal girls games, leaving those two teams atop the bracket.

The Final Four for the Class 5A boys games had Rangeview going against Grandview and Valor Chris-

tian taking on Fairview, both scheduled for March 13, but those games were called off.

Ten other states have canceled their state basketball tournaments, 16 have postponed or suspended their tournaments, 12 have ongoing tourneys with fan limits, and Montana is conducting its state championships as planned.

Cherry Creek girls coach Clint Evans didn’t hear about the cancellations until he reached home after the semifinal game.

“So, as I got into the house I started getting text messages and I said oh my goodness,” said Evans. “We (the team) went out to breakfast this morning and we just decided to get together

and talk. Misery loves company, I guess.

“The girls feel that we want everybody to be safe and nothing bad to happen. It’s just so odd. Every year there’s something new that happens but you could never predict not having a state champion.”

Evans figured once the semifinal game was complete he thought maybe the championship game could be played between the two Centennial League schools that each won a game against the other during the regular season.

“I really wasn’t too surprised when we got the news,” said Evans. “I feel like I am kind of at peace with it, but I just feel bad for the girls. It could have been two (state titles) in a row for us. I think the school district will call us co-champs and put a little asterisk by it.”

Mullen girls coach Frank Cawley feels the right decision was made to cancel the rest of the basketball tournaments.

“It’s a tough pill to swallow but it was definitely the right call,” he said.

“As educators it was what we had to do. These girls need to understand that life happens and sometimes you are dealt a blow that you can’t handle.

My team showed some maturity and understanding.

“The way we look at is that my group of girls have not lost a playoff game. We were the defending champions and nobody has beat us. We’re proud of our accomplishments. I’m happy for Holy Family (the other semifinal winner). The championship would have been a great game. We can both look at it as being co-champions.”

Suspension of spring sports prompts mixed reactions COVID-19 pandemic leads to decision by statewide body

The Colorado High School Activities Association has made the tough decision to confront the COVID-19 pandemic and has suspended all spring activities and sports games and practices through April 6.

This decision was effective March 13. The situation will be monitored and evaluated with key decision-makers from around the state to determine when, or if, to resume the spring season, CHSAA said in a news release.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions.

Cherry Creek baseball coach Marc Johnson and his team were scheduled to play in a tournament this month in

Arizona, but it was called off when the school district canceled all out-of-state travel.

He has no idea how to make up for three weeks of lost time in getting a team ready to play on April 6.

“That’s a great question,” said Johnson. “I don’t know. We will have to figure out something. The kids, they obviously want to play, but they understand. We’ll see what they say April 6.

“I give CHSAA credit that they at least said you are shut off until April 6 and we will re-evaluate. A lot of these colleges, they just shut down.

“My personal feeling is the country is overreacting, but we’ll see. I understand they don’t want it to become something unbelievable, but it comes across like everybody should quarantine themselves. I know economically this is going to do some serious damage.”

Losing three weeks will make it tough to reschedule games.

“I’m all over the board,” said Douglas County Athletic Director Jeff

Gardella when asked for a reaction.

“For the kids to be starting their seasons, training and then go three weeks without training because they can’t practice and then to resume any of the sports — what does that do for injuries and what does that do to our schedules? We will never be able to make up all these games that were scheduled.

What does that do to playoffs, RPI (rankings) all of that stuff ? It’s just crazy.”

Gardella has questions about why spring sports — with all but boys swimming played outdoors — is considered exposed.

“The part I struggle with is, we go to school every day with 2,000, 3,000 kids, but we can’t go out and have a baseball game in the open air with 100 fans.

How is that putting our kids more at risk than going to school with 2,000, 3,000 kids every day? I get the indoor stuff where there are packed venues — but when you are outside with the natural air and not big crowds? It is what it is, and we just have to deal

with it.”

The night of March 12, most school districts across the metro area, including the Douglas County School District, announced they would be having extended spring breaks, keeping students out of school for at least an additional week.

Larry Bull, athletic director for the Cherry Creek School District, applauds the CHSAA decision to wait until April 6 but says many people do not agree.

“I’m glad that it has been postponed to evaluate and see what happens,” said Bull. “I think there is a lot of unknown and I think there is a lot of information that is going to be coming. I’m glad we didn’t come out and say were cancelling everything.

“With that being said, everybody has to realize that yes, we may resume or we may be done for the rest of the year. I know some people are supporting the suspension 100 percent and there are people that are really upset about it.”

Evan Pahos was a spoiler at the March 10 state hockey championship game at the Pepsi Center, but he finally brought an outburst of cheers from Valor Christian fans.

Pahos, a 160-pound Valor junior forward, blemished a national-recordtying performance by Fort Collins goalie Sam Simon when he scored the winning goal with 2:12 left in the fifth overtime period to give Valor Christian a 1-0 win over the Lambkins.

It gave Valor (20-2-1) its first state hockey championship while Fort Collins wound up with an 18-4-1 final record.

Valor controlled play most of the game but couldn’t score against Simon, who made 84 saves to tie the National Federation of High Schools record set by Jamey Ramsey of Michigan’s Flint Northern in 1987.

Simon’s dominance finally ended when Pahos concluded the longest game in state championship history as the fifth overtime was winding down.

“I stepped up on a guy at the blue line and ended up making a little move on the next defenseman and cut across the crease and just shoved it under his

pad and it went in,” said Pahos, who also had the game-winning goal in Valor’s 2-1 semifinal win over Regis Jesuit. “I felt like we dominated but their goalie was just unbelievable. ” Simon was kneeling after the game near where players and the Zambonis leave the ice but players, coaches and Pepsi Center workers kept patting him on his back and he once muttered, “I could have stopped that shot.”

But Valor kept Simon busy most of the game with an 85-36 advantage on shots on goal.

Eagles goalie Trey Hirschfield had to overcome a lack of shots against him early in the game but then made

several key stops in getting the shutout victory with his 36 saves.

“Zero goals against is a great achievement,” said Hirschfield. “Working as a wolf pack just shows how we all came together, played defense to protect our own net first and then in the fifth overtime we finally worried about their net. I can’t take much credit for that. It was mostly my team and my defense. We had two guys block shots with their faces.

“That was the best game I’ve ever seen a goalie play in my life,” he added about Simon’s performance. “I felt a little shaky in the beginning of the game because of the atmosphere but

after I got settled in, I tried to stay focused on the game and what was going on and just focused on the next puck. “ Players were on the ice for over 88 minutes in the five overtimes. After the three regulation 17-minute periods, the two teams played two eight-minute sudden victory overtimes followed by two eight-minute OT sessions of fouron-four hockey before the game finally ended with Pahos’ goal.

Valor coach George Gwozdecky said the Eagles ran out of snacks and energy drinks after the first overtime, and he watched Fort Collins kill two Valor 4-on-3 power plays during the fourth and start of the fifth overtime periods.

“It was just a matter of time before someone was going to make an error or mistake and somebody take advantage of it, and we were able to do that.,” said Gwozdecky, who coached at the University of Denver and two years in the NHL before becoming Valor’s coach four years ago. “It’s about time to win a championship.

This was our third straight time to be in the Frozen Four.

“Sam Simon did a great job. There are so many superlatives you can use to describe his performance. I thought Trey Hirschfield obviously didn’t get as much action but there were a couple saves on two-on-ones in the game, but as the game wore on you could really see the ice start to tilt, with our depth being a factor. Simon kept them in the game.”

between a drug they’ve used for many months and new symptoms. Age itself can be a culprit and make a long-used drug suddenly intolerable.

Jicha recalled a case last year when he was asked to give a second opinion on a woman recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He reviewed her medicines and “six jumped right out — these are not good medications for someone over 65” let alone at the higher doses she was receiving, he said. Four turned out to be for problems she no longer had, and he was able to switch some others to safer alternatives.

The woman’s score on a 38-point test of thinking skills rose from 18 before the medication changes to 33 after them, putting her at the low end of the normal range.

Now she can drive, which was “an absolute no-no six months earlier,” Jicha said. “She clearly no longer meets criteria for dementia.”

Participants are given a sort of cognitive stress test — they take exams for thinking skills while wearing a patch that oozes scopolamine, a motion sickness drug that has anticholinergic effects, and then four weeks later without the patch. If they do worse while on the patch, it means certain medicines might be harmful for them, Moga explained.

To help avoid medication problems, doctors give these tips: • Make sure you know all the medications someone is taking, including prescription, over-the-counter and vitamins or dietary supplements.

Don’t assume that some are safe just because they don’t require a prescription.

• Keep a running list with the date each medicine is started and stopped and note any symptoms. The National Institute on Aging offers a worksheet for this.

• Review the total medication list with a doctor, a geriatrics specialist or a pharmacist.

• If you suspect a problem, bring it up and don’t wait for your doctor to ask. The American Geriatric Society’s Health in Aging Foundation has these tools and tips for finding alternatives to any medicines causing trouble.

Bids and Settlements Public Notice REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL (RFP) #003-20 ROCK RIDGE CEMETERY CONSERVATION PROJECT The Department of Community Development, Community and Resource Services of Douglas County Government, hereinafter referred to as the County, respectfully requests proposals from responsible and qualified historical/architectural conservators for the conservation treatment of thirty-six (36) markers inside Rock Ridge Cemetery located in Douglas County, Colorado.

The Rock Ridge Cemetery is a one-acre parcel of land located on a hill overlooking Cherry Valley in the NW ¼, S19, T9S, R65W on the ridge between Antelope Creek and Cherry Creek.

John Proctor, whose two wives are buried in the cemetery, deeded the land to the Rock Ridge neighborhood on July 5, 1880 for $5.00. The first known burial in the cemetery was 1870, John Proctor’s first wife, and the last in 1953, Chris Schreiber. According to information gathered by County staff, there are thirty-two (32) burials in the cemetery, but more may exist, unmarked. There is a total of twenty-four (24) monuments with twenty-nine (29) burials, four (4) white crosses and a metal identification sign.

The RFP documents may be reviewed and/or printed from the Rocky Mountain E-Purchasing System website at www.rockymountainbidsystem.com. RFP documents are not available for purchase from Douglas County Government and can only be accessed from the above-mentioned website. While the RFP documents are available electronically, Douglas County cannot accept electronic proposal responses.

RFP responses will be received until 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2020 by Douglas County Government, Finance Department, Purchasing Division, 100 Third Street, Suite 130, Castle Rock, Colorado 80104. All responses must be submitted in a sealed envelope plainly marked “Request for Proposal (RFP) #003-20, Rock Ridge Cemetery Conservation Project”. Proposal responses will not be considered which are received after the time stated and any proposals so received will be returned unopened.

Douglas County Government reserves the right to reject any and all proposals, to waive formalities, informalities, or irregularities contained in a said proposal and furthermore, to award a contract for items herein, either in whole or in part, if it is deemed to be in the best interest of the County to do so.
