RTD plans no cuts to 483, seven other bus routes Transportation district says feedback led to reversal

In its final public meeting leading up to the May 17 service changes, the Regional Transportation District announced March 5 that it will not make any cuts to Bus Route 483.

Seven other bus routes, including the 99L, from the Federal Center to downtown Denver, and the RunRide for the Bolder Boulder were also taken off the chopping block, RTD announced.

A final vote on the proposed service changes will take place March 24.

Ken Mihalik, Parker’s RTD Board of Directors District G representative, found out about the decision to remove the 483 from the proposed service cut list hours before the March 5 meeting.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” Mihalik said.

The 483 local bus route travels from Lincoln Station in Lone Tree to Aurora’s Nine Mile Station via Lincoln Avenue and Parker Road in an “L” shape. In February, RTD announced a service reduction proposal to 25 local bus routes, including the 483. The district planned to reduce rush-hour pickup times from every 30 minutes to every 60 minutes.

RTD announced will not be modified come May 17, when the service changes to the remaining 17 bus routes will take effect.

The public engagement process RTD underwent, and its tour of 18 town hall-style meetings in the past two weeks, led to RTD’s reconsideration of the routes, Mihalik said.

“It may be a rare thing, but it is a genuine position RTD is taking to have that feedback,” Mihalik said.

Parker Town Council and staff were frustrated when the news broke that the 483 would have minor cuts made, saying the town does not receive its fair share of service for the amount of money Parker RTD taxpayers contribute to the district.

Those within the Parker RTD taxing district contribute about $11 million

per year to the district.

Parker council and staff submitted a letter of opposition to RTD March 3. Parker’s letter, signed by Mayor Mike Waid, outlines the town’s history with RTD service and the town’s initiative to support RTD services like FlexRide and include new developments into the RTD taxing district.

Parker has two bus routes, the local 483 to Aurora and Route P, a commuter route to Civic Center Station in downtown Denver. Parker also has the on-demand shuttle service FlexRide, which the town subsidizes in the summer to make it free for use.

Despite the good news for users of the 483, nobody at the March 5 meeting was there because of the 483 service change proposal. With Mihalik and several other RTD

staff members present, locals asked questions about RTD’s workforce retention, safety issues, inconsistent pickup times and Parker’s RTD taxing district.

Claudia Iglesias, a Parker resident of 15 years, lives just outside the taxing district and relies on the light rail F line to get to work every day.

Iglesias said she was happy with the efforts from RTD to engage with the public, but was tired of inconsistent, and sometimes unsafe-feeling, light rail pickups.

“I wanted more,” Iglesias said.

Iglesias said the F Line never is on time and sometimes gets canceled, making it difficult to plan her commute. She joked her and her coworkers say “RTD” stands for “Return to Driving” because of the unreliable service.

“There’s always drama” on the light rail, Iglesias said. “It’s never just ‘take the train and go home.’”

Ron Springsteen takes the light rail to get to downtown Denver occasionally. He was also frustrated with the taxing district boundaries and light rail service. He said he wrote two emails to RTD officials and didn’t get a response, so he was happy to have some of his questions answered at the March 5 meeting.

“I appreciate them going through all these meetings and giving feedback to all of us,” Springsteen said.

“It gave us an opportunity to express our concerns.”

Tri-County Health leader: Stay informed, calm when it comes to virus Community gets expert advice on COVID-19

School district makes plans in case of local outbreak

As the novel coronavirus — COVID-19 — makes a foothold in the United States, local health officials are reminding people about measures they can take to help stop its spread, prevent themselves from contracting it and prepare for potential outbreaks at the local level.

Executive Director John Douglas of the Tri-County Health Department, which covers Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties, urged local residents to first and foremost stay calm, and remember Colorado remains at low risk for an outbreak.

He then cautioned the Douglas public to stay informed about the virus and rely on credible sources of information.

While coronaviruses as a family are not new, he said, the COVID-19 outbreak that began last year is a new strain.

Health officials are learning more and more about the virus as the epidemic grows, including how it transmits throughout a community.

Those were some of the precautions outlined in a letter to the community about how the district is monitoring the global coronavirus outbreak and its status in the United States. The district also created a designated webpage on its website, describing how the district will respond in the event of a local outbreak.

The district declined an intershowing signs of lessening, Douglas said.

A vaccine is not yet available and likely won’t be for a year or more, although efforts are underway to develop one quickly, Douglas said.

The virus, called COVID-19, is a new respiratory disease that started in China last year.

In a letter published online and signed by the “Douglas County School District,” DCSD says it is coordinating with public health agencies, including the Tri-County Health Department and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, to monitor COVID-19.

The district will follow the health department’s direction on any quarantines or closures if a major outbreak hits locally.

“Our focus would first be on ensuring the safety of students and staff, and, then on how education would continue,” the district’s letwho are known to have COVID-19.

People who are elderly and/or have a lung disease are the most at-risk groups.

As for local outbreaks, Douglas said to think ahead.

Preparing as one would for a snowstorm is good analogy, he said, although he added an outbreak could require people to stay home longer than a one- or two-day weather event would. Buying some groceries and household items is fine but stockpiling toilet paper in the garage or clearing out water on store shelves is an overreaction at this time, he said. And it disrupts the supply chain at stores.

Douglas answered these and other questions about the outbreak. Here’s more on how he suggests people prepare for COVID-19 in the Denver metro area.

What is Tri-County Health Department focused on right now?

We’re trying to prevent transmission from happening. We’re trying to prevent fear of the epidemic, which is very understandable, from becoming too exaggerated, and the anxiety creating social disruption. And frankly, we’ve seen the stock markets go up and down, so even financial disruptions as well.

Who is at risk of contracting COVID-19?

The highest risk is if you are in contact with somebody who has a known infection. That would be a high risk.

Or, if you have traveled in one of the countries where there seems to be widespread circulation right now — within the incubation period, about 14 days.

How does COVID-19 spread? How can people prevent themselves from contracting it?

Most respiratory viruses are actually transmitted by people having stuff on their hands, and we touch our faces a lot.

The Colorado Department of Education has “assured local school districts that they will provide support and additional flexibilities” in the event of extended closures, the letter says.

The letter says DCSD has “stringent cleaning practices” at district schools and facilities to prevent spreading the virus.

Soap and water is probably better than hand sanitizer. If you can’t be near soap and water, use a hand sanitizer, but soap and water work really well.

How does COVID-19 affect different age groups and which are at the biggest risk?

We’re learning more every week.

Older people with underlying lung diseases appear to be at the greatest risk.

It may be kids are more likely to get it asymptomatically. Some people get so sick they die, others don’t even know they have it, and then 80% have it mild.

What should you do if you are generally sick?

If you are sick and have a respiratory infection, stay home. Don’t be a hero.

When should people who are sick go to the doctor or be tested for COVID-19?

We’re really trying to encourage people who are not unstably ill to call first. Call your doctor and say, “How are you doing, I’m not feeling so well.

I’m coughing, I’m sneezing, it’s been going on for three days, I’d like to come in and get tested.”

If you called me today and told me that story, I would say, “Just stay home and chill. This is very unlikely to be the coronavirus.” If you’re not becoming progressively worse, call your provider first. Don’t come in because testing is still potentially limited.

How should people prepare for the possibility of a local outbreak?

Stay alert. Stay rationally calm. Try to stay informed. Use discretion about where you get your information.

Three local residents ‘presumptive positive’ for COVID-19 WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF

The Tri-County Health Department has announced three presumptive positive cases of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, in Douglas County as of the afternoon of March 6.

The first Douglas County case confirmed by the state was a Castle Rock woman who recently traveled outside the country. Hers was the second presumptive positive case in Colorado, and was announced by Gov. Jared Polis on March 5.

Two more Douglas County cases were announced on March 6 — one for an adult who recently returned from a trip to Italy, and the second, a student who returned from a trip to the Philippines. Two of the cases are from the Castle Rock area and the third is from Highlands Ranch.

“Both of these new cases are from known international exposure, have mild illnesses, and are isolated at home, not in a hospital. There is no indiciation of additional community exposure at this time,” Tri-County Executive Director John Douglas said in a statement.

Tri-County staff are monitoring people who may have been exposed to COVID-19, he said.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Stay home when you are sick, and keep your children at home when they are sick.

• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

In addition, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment says it is not recommended that people who are well wear a face mask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.

In a March 5 news release, TriCounty said the first Douglas County case is an “older adult woman from Douglas County who was exposed during an international cruise.”

The first case in Colorado was confirmed in a man who was visiting Summit County after flying into Denver International Airport. The Douglas County and Summit County cases are not believed to be related.

As of the evening of March 6, several other cases had been reported in Colorado, and officials said several quarantines were underway.

Douglas County Commissioner Roger Partridge issued a statement

on March 5 urging the public to practice good hygiene and stay vigilant.

Seniors find friends make workouts worth it Older adults make up almost half the membership at Parker Rec Center

This group of seniors considers themselves “Pam’s family.”

Sitting around a Kunjani Coffee House table March 3, the group of about a dozen seniors told how they came to meet each other. Most of them met through a movement class at the Parker Recreation Center taught by Pam Kilduff.

They have grown so close they consider themselves a family.

“These people inspire me,” Kilduff said.

Kilduff has fostered a community of active seniors at the Parker Recreation Center. After each session, the group, plus Kilduff, go out for coffee and chat.

Being active has become an avenue, sometimes the only one, for seniors to socialize with others during the day.

Kilduff has been instructing the rec center’s senior movement class for 15 years. The SilverSneakers group fitness class has gained so much popularity that the rec center announced it will begin a similar, less-intense class called Motion and Movement this summer, open to members and non-members.

Now, seniors with SilverSneakers eligibility can participate in this class for free as well. For non-members, the six-week class costs $24.

SilverSneakers provides free membership to the rec center. There are SilverSneakers classes for cardio and yoga as well as a more classic workout.

The program is first-come, first-serve with a maximum of 25 people per class.

They’ve become so popular that if you don’t arrive early, you might not get in at all.

About 45% of the rec center’s memberships are over the age of 62.

“This might be the only time they get

to get out of the house to socialize. They spend almost four hours here, either downstairs on the lobby talking to friends, in a class or on the recumbent bike,” said Deni Jacobs, Parker Parks and Rec therapeutic/senior coordinator.

The new Motion and Movement class is less intense. It is modified depending on who shows up. Whether a participant has shoulder or knee issues, three trainers are on standby to help get the most out of their workouts. The class used to be tailored toward sufferers of Parkinson’s disease, though being diagnosed is not a requirement, The class has grown popular because of how personalized it is.

The class will be open to drop-ins, who don’t sign up at the beginning of the class, beginning in May. “This makes it as easy as possible, bring people into this comfortable, safe environment so they can exercise at a level that is safe and comfortable to them,” Jacobs said.

These seniors want an active lifestyle.

Some of them feel they don’t fit in some of the senior community centers. So, this group, through Kilduff, found each other. When the rec center is closed on workout days, they will meet up for a field trip at places like the Miller Activity Center incline in Castle Rock.

The group, mostly women, got into the program for one reason or another.

The general mantra they draw back to is “move it or lose it,” meaning when you reach a certain age it becomes paramount to exercise regularly to maintain muscle growth.

Dorothy Oxborrow is 90 and has been active all her life. She said she enjoys the classes because it makes a person feel better, helps the brain and it’s a chance to socialize. What keeps her going, she joked, is because she doesn’t want to get old.

“It’s such a big part of my life. I couldn’t imagine not doing it,” Oxborrow said. “Everybody gets to know everybody and it makes exercising more fun.”

Kristopher Schnell was appointed chairman of the Parker Downtown Business Alliance, and members were named to the alliance’s board Jan. 1.

Schnell, most recently the vice chairman for the alliance, replaces Shelli Mango as chairman. Schnell is president of Cogent Independent Advisors, a fee-only financial planning and investment advisory firm. He has served in various community service and leadership positions, including

the youth committee chair of Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks, board member for the Triunfo YMCA, and Cub Master for Cub Scout Pack 3789.

Anne Barrington was named vice chair of the alliance. She has lived in Parker for more than 17 years and operated The Barrington Group Real Estate for 15 years.

The alliance’s treasurer is Omar Castillo, who has lived in Parker for 18 years. He is the vice president of the Front Range Central Region for Community Banks of Colorado. He and his wife, Carrie, have two kids, Owen, 8, and Olivia, 4. In addition to being treasurer of the alliance, he is chairman of the board for the Parker Chamber.

Dennis Huspeni, co-owner of NerdsToGo Computer Service, is secretary of the alliance. Huspeni

owns his business with his wife, Clare, and has lived in Parker for more than 17 years. He is a former newspaper reporter with the Denver Post, Denver Business Journal and Colorado Springs Gazette, and also has worked in public relations/media relations for Fidelity Investments. State now has ability to test for COVID-19 STAFF REPORT

The State Laboratory at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment can now test for COVID-19 — the technical name for novel coronavirus. Testing had previously been done only by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a news release.

The test will be used for people who meet the criteria for COVID-19 testing only; it is not available to the general public.

With staffing and equipment resources, the state lab has the capacity to test up to 160 samples per day, assuming test kits from the CDC are continuously available. Turnaround time for results is expected to be within 24 hours of specimen receipt at the state laboratory.

“Being able to confirm or rule out cases of COVID-19 at the state level allows us to be more nimble in responding to and controlling this disease if it occurs in Colorado,” State Laboratory Director Scott Bookman said in the news release. “The time frame for testing cases should be quicker than ever.”

In Colorado, the public health officials may decide that a patient merits testing if: • He or she has a fever or signs/ symptoms of lower respiratory illness, such as cough or shortness of breath, and has been in close contact with someone confirmed with COVID-19 within 14 days of when symptoms started.

This guidance varies slightly from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As the state lab has capacity, Colorado will continue to consider testing for individuals who are not hospitalized to identify patients who have traveled to affected areas and who have less severe disease.

If a medical provider thinks a patient may have COVID-19, the provider will contact the state or a local public health department for instructions on testing. If a patient needs to be tested, the medical provider will collect a specimen from the patient’s nose and throat and send the samples to the state lab. Public health agencies will make the final decision about testing for COVID-19 virus.

The collaboration between public health, health care providers, and other agencies to prepare for the disease in Colorado is ongoing. The state will continue to investigate and test possible cases and provide timely updates about the situation.

Douglas County: ‘We want to be ready’

While the Tri-County Health Department will lead Douglas County’s response to COVID-19, other county agencies are also preparing to assist in countering the illness.

The county Office of Emergency Management’s primary role will be to support the health department throughout the process, OEM director Tim Johnson said.

“If this gets worse,” he said, “we want to be ready and want to be able to protect our employees as well as our

citizens.”

The OEM has set up a virtual emergency operation center and is activated at a level three, which is the lowest alert level.

“Which means, essentially, emergency management is monitoring and in contact with Tri-County Health for the latest information,” he said.

The emergency management office will help distribute information and decisions released by Tri-County, Johnson said.

Art becomes something people can really get into

f you own what is commonly called a “painting,” you might want to hang on to it. Someday it might be worth a lot of money as a curiosity.

QUIET Paintings, typically but not always, DESPERATION are considered art, and they are achieved with oil paint, acrylic paint or watercolor on a variety of rectangular and square substrates that include canvas, paper and even cave walls.

Craig Marshall Paintings can depict a number of Smith things: the human figure, landscapes, animals or, in the case of abstract expression, nothing

at all.

Artists have painted works of art for centuries.

Caves in France near the village of Montignac are historically famous because of the interior wall paintings that are thought to be 17,000 years old.

Artists such as Durer, Rembrandt, da Vinci, Monet, Picasso and Pollock have inspired art students and audiences, and their sublime efforts have filled art museums around the world, including our own Denver Art Museum, the Kirkland Museum and the Museum of Outdoor Arts.

While some artists, particularly the once-a-week variety that is fascinated by fruit and landscapes, will continue to paint on squares and rectangles, their numbers will dwindle to next to nothing.

This will have a major impact on future art exhibitions, on art schools, on art museums and on vendors — especially those who currently manufacture pre-made canvases.

One day, finding a canvas to paint on will be as difficult as finding a typewriter ribbon is now.

None of this means the end of art. There’s simply a new kid on the block.

It’s called “immersion art.” Immersion art is similar to entering a fun house at a cheap carnival where things seem to fall off the walls, endanger viewers and provide almost hallucinogenic images.

It’s happening and, most importantly, it’s cool.

Conventional art museum attendance — except for blockbuster

exhibitions featuring the work of art history’s Hall of Fame — is in decline, and if the museums don’t convert to immersion spaces, they will be deceased in the water.

New museums, specifically designed for immersion-type products, are sprouting all over the country and all over the world. Likewise: galleries and other venues where art is exhibited.

Think of yourself as Alice Liddell and you’ve just fallen down a rabbit hole. Or going on a date with Salvador Dali.

As many of you know, I am a trained painter. I am retrofitting my entire inventory of paintings with mechanisms that will enable them to spin, move up and down and SEE SMITH, P14

Empowering young women When I think back to when I was a 16-year-old girl in 1978, I was only expected to get good grades, go to college, get married, and raise a family. Fortunately, people in my life encouraged me to reach for my dreams. But not everyone has that support.

e are all familiar with the start of a story that begins with, “Once upon a time.” What if that time is right now? What if years from now someone tells our story based on what they know about us, what they have observed in us, and what they WINNING have experienced WORDS through us? They may just begin with, “Once upon a time,” and then fill in the rest of our story based on what they remember about us.

Here’s the thing, those stories that are told in the Michael Norton future will be based on what we are doing right now, today, and in all the tomorrows of our lives. The good news is that we get to control that narrative, don’t we? And we control that narrative based on our behaviors, our contributions, the words we use, how we respond to situations, our experiences, and by living out our story in such a way that

whoever we meet remembers us as someone who made their day, their job, and their life a little brighter.

When we think about our “Once upon a time” story that people will share, we should not worry about our past mistakes or failures because they are behind us now. We need to own and always learn from those mistakes and failures, but we should also remember that we have the opportunity to create our new story. The story that we really want to live and that we choose to live, and the one that we can start to begin authoring right now.

And maybe it is not a new story at all. Maybe we love the story we have lived and that we are living right now. And from this moment forward we can continue to write the rest of our story, we can build upon our journey by living more “Once upon a time” moments that helped shape how others will remember us and how we may have made a difference in their lives in some way.

Right now may seem like a fleeting moment in time, and that may

Jack was the son of Walter and Elizabeth Smith of Gadsden, AL and was a proud Marine from 1950-1953, and served in the Korean War. He was an artist, and had a long career at Mountain Bell, followed by a second career as an insurance agent and then

driving for Enterprise. He loved the Southwest, and was a lifelong Broncos fan and avid Rockies fan.

One of his last conversations was a wish for the Rockies to please finally get the hitters some pitching support.

Jack had a great sense of humor, and is loved dearly. Those who knew him will never forget his tenacity, his protectiveness, wit, charm, and his undying love and caring for them. We were blessed to have him in our lives, and will always be better for it.

Controversial program aims to reduce young children’s risk of drowning

W

ith drowning as a leading cause of death among young children, parents each year seek out the best swim safety classes for their children.

One program in the Denver metro area is so popular among residents that it rivals community recreation centers’ own swimming programs in participation, the rec centers say.

Infant Swimming Resource, or ISR, has conducted more than 8 million self-rescue lessons nationwide since its founding in 1966 and boasts having saved 800 children, according to its website.

In the daily, 10-minute sessions, infants and toddlers are slowly taught to control their breath underwater, roll on their backs and then float if they find themselves unexpectedly in water. Those old enough to maneuver themselves are trained to find a pool’s wall.

ISR is not meant to replace other swim safety measure and the program encourages practices including constant supervision of children near water, four-sided fencing around pools, self-locking gates and alarms on any entrance to a pool.

The program is not without controversy. The American Academy of Pediatrics has not endorsed ISR because it lacks research, and some worry its methods traumatize children.

Still, parents steadfast in their support of ISR and confident in its ability to save young lives flock to the self-rescue lessons at local recreation centers, private pools and other facilities year-round.

“We are kind of the last measure against drowning,” ISR instructor Julia McDonald said. “If all of those other things fail, we are the thing that will save them if nobody else is around.”

Thankful for ISR Unintentional drowning was the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States, according to 2017 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was the second leading cause of death for children 5 to 9 years old.

Standing by the pool at the Highlands Ranch Recreation Center at Eastridge, Christy Groza pointed to the exact spot where her 4-year-old daughter Hyacinth slipped and fell in the water two years earlier.

Hyacinth received ISR training when she was younger but had not been to a class in roughly a year when the accident happened. Nonetheless, she did not panic. Instead, she immediately turned on her back and floated until a lifeguard scooped her

up, Groza said.

“I was so thankful for ISR,” Groza said.

For 2-year-old Benjamin Simcik, ISR lessons are about giving him survival skills when swimming with his parents and two older siblings, his mother Laura Simcik said.

“When you’re in a pool with three kids it could be life or death so fast and it’s really scary,” she said. “He needs to know that if you’re in water you can go under really fast.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children begin swim lessons at 12 months old, if parents and their pediatrician agree it’s a good fit for the individual child, said Sarah Denny, spokeswoman and lead author on the AAP’s policy statement for drowning prevention. Research shows that’s the age where swim lessons become effective and can lower the risk of drowning, according to the AAP. Parents are urged to stay vigilant and never leave a child alone at bath time, in wading pools or anytime a child may be near water. Stay within arm’s reach of infants and toddlers.

Still, many drowning deaths occur when children were not expected to be near the water, Denny said.

Pools should be protected by four-sided fencing with self-locking gates. Alarms on entrances to a pool are also encouraged, Denny said. All children should receive swim lessons, and parents too, according to the AAP’s policy statement.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 to 4 and it remains within the top 10 leading causes of death for people through the age of 54, according to 2017 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There are a variety of swim lessons available in the Denver metro area, at community recreation centers or private companies. Parents can get in the water and learn alongside their infants and toddlers in some classes. There are also small-group classes where parents watch poolside, or private, one-on-one lessons with an instructor.

Benjamin did some crying when he began lessons several weeks ago.

By week two he could float in the water without being held. In his fifth week, Benjamin was turning on his back when let go by his instructor and kicking to the pool’s edge in seconds.

“It was a little hard to watch at first,” Simcik said of the daily lessons. “I think the consistency helped me too because I knew what to expect.”

Benjamin and Hyacinth’s instructor, Jennifer Dombrowski, has been ISR-certified for nine years and works in Highlands Ranch. She lets each student move at a pace that works for them, she said. She never allows a child to try a skill — putting their face in the water, submerging, floating — until she’s certain they’re ready, she said.

Both Dombrowski and McDonald, who is an independent contractor at the Brighton Recreation Center and teaches in Arvada, said demand is high for the program.

“Every child needs to know selfsurvive,” Dombrowski said. “Give

“I think it’s horrible, because I get kids that come to me that are 3 or 4 years old that are terrified,” he said.

“They’re scared to death of the water.

Not all of them, but too many.”

He’d prefer the youngest of swimmers undergo parent-taught classes, where parents are in the pool learning alongside infants and toddlers.

It provides an important layer of comfort for children, Marsh said, who began as a swim coach in 1972 and coached for 35 years, including several at the University of Colorado.

He switched to running swim lessons 15 years ago.

AAP spokeswoman Sarah Denny has served on the organization’s council for Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention for seven years. The general pediatrician was also lead author on the AAP’s policy statement for drowning prevention.

“At this time, we do not endorse ISR because there’s no evidence to show that ISR is effective in preventing drowning,” Denny said. “There is absolutely no evidence around ISR.” Denny said she isn’t sure why studies are not available on the program, but it leaves AAP without the necessary information to take a stance on ISR. A spokesperson for ISR could not be reached for comment.

Parents of children in ISR told Colorado Community Media they either were not aware of the criticism toward ISR or were not swayed by it. Firsthand experience, they said, earned their faith in the program.

“Some parents can’t handle their kids crying and they mistake that for being scared,” Groza said. “Just because your kid cries doesn’t mean they’re scared. It could just mean that they’re a 2-year-old and they don’t want to do something.”

Once upon a time there was a young man who seemed to move from job to job with no goals or vision for his future. Living for the moment, the fun, and the paycheck. He was never thinking about the life story that he was writing. This went on until one day he heard someone else share their life story. It was a story about living a life as a wandering generality, a life absent of goals and dreams until one day someone else came along and made

a difference in their life. They taught them about hope, and they taught them how to grow from being a wandering generality to becoming a meaningful specific. In that moment the young man understood that he mattered, his story mattered, and that he wanted his “Once upon a time” story to change. That young man was me.

It was a season of firsts for the Chaparral hockey team, but advancing to its first state championship game will have to wait after the Wolverines were handed a 3-2 loss to Fort Collins in the March 5 semifinal state playoff contest at the Pepsi Center.

“This was our third straight year in the Frozen Four, which is special in itself,” said coach Ryan Finnefrock, whose team finished with a 16-3-3 record. “We did a lot of firsts this year.

It was the first time we’ve ever beaten Regis (2-0 on Feb. 13), and we had never been ranked No. 1 in the state of Colorado, and that was our highest ranking and we were one game away from winning a conference title for the first time. So we’ve done a lot of firsts this year.”

However, the Wolverines fell behind Fort Collins 3-0 after Nolan Williamson scored at 2:28 of the second period and could never overcome the slow start. `’We gave ourselves opportunities down the stretch.,” said Finnefrock.

“You saw the fight in these guys. They never quit. At this stage and how good high school hockey has become with the margin of error, we played two good periods and not three. That first period hurt us but the fight in these kids is special.”

For some, March snow a tough foe

here was yet another snow storm late in the day March 1, although much lighter than previous ones in February, but it was enough to cover the fields and playing surfaces as the 2020 spring sports season for nine sports started practices on March 2.

Snow and moisture OVERTIME in Colorado can be expected to interrupt schedules for spring sports teams.

Boys swimmers don’t have to worry about the snow and some sports can clear the snow off venues easier, but baseball Jim Benton coaches spend as much time working to dry off diamonds as they do throwing batting practice.

Girls golf and tennis could scrimmage and begin competitons on March 5. Baseball, boys and girls lacrosse,

girls soccer, boys swimming and boys and girls track teams could schedule games and meets on March 12.

That is, of course, weather permitting.

One person who welcomes snow is 12-year-old Ranch View Middle School seventh-grader Sophia Gardner.

She is a skier and a member of the Loveland Ski Club. She recently qualified in the U14 division for the Rocky Central Junior Championships at Steamboat Springs Ski Resort between March 9-14.

Gardner has been skiing since she was 5 years old and trains Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at Loveland Ski Area. ”It’s pretty involved,” said Sophia’s father, Bill Gardner, who laughed when asked how many miles he has put on the car transporting his daughter to training and meets. ”Gosh, several thousand miles,” he said.

Basketball championships a go CHSAA commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green has been in contact with multiple state and local agencies concerning the coronavirus, and right now the CHSAA plans to hold the remaining state high school basketball championships.

She send out a statement to schools last week.

“Our plan is to conduct the championship events unless directed by state agencies and/or facility administration of cancellations,” BlandfordGreen stated.

Grassroots winner Mitch Savage, golf course superintendent at Englewood’s Broken Tee Golf Club, has been named a Grassroots Ambassador Leadership Award winner.

Girls basketball: South metro teams dominate playoffs STAFF REPORT

Four area teams won Great 8 games on March 5 at the Denver Coliseum to advance to the Final Four of the Class 5A girls state high school basketball championships.

Top-seeded Valor Christian (25-1) will face Grandview (233) in a 7 p.m. semifinal game, scheduled for March 12 at the Coliseum, while defending state champion Cherry Creek goes against Highlands Ranch and coach Caryn Jarocki at 8:30 p.m. in the second Final Four game.

Valor had five players score in double figures and the team connected on 59 percent of its field goal attempts in a 63-22 romp over Fossil Ridge in a Great 8 contest. Sophomore Raegan Beers led the way for the Eagles with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Kindyll Wetta also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Jenna Siebert and Karissa Lukasiewicz each had 12 points and Skyler Boylan added 10 points as the fifth player to

score in double figures for the Eagles.

Lauren Betts, a 6-foot-7 sophomore, scored 31 points and had 12 rebounds in Grandview’s 77-38 victory over Fruita Monument, and Cali Clark, a 6-3 senior, had 20 points and 11 rebounds in Cherry Creek’s 4633 triumph over Ralston Valley.

Highlands Ranch and Regis Jesuit hooked up in the most competitive Great 8 contest, which saw the Falcons’ Payton Muma score the game’s final six points from the foul line in a 51-44 win over the Raiders.

Regis’ Avery Van Sickle took game scoring honors with 22 points, while Muma led the Falcons’ offense with 18 points.

In Sweet 16 games on March 3, Valor Christian overwhelmed Rangeview, 73-40, and Cherry Creek routed Centennial League foe Cherokee Trail, 72-32. Grandview eliminated Arapahoe, 55-25, Regis got past Broomfield, 58-51, and Highlands Ranch downed Fairview, 48-25.

“We had three words we were taught and they were grit, joy and compassion.

After that first period, we came out with those words in our heads but we fell a little short. Yeah, we fell a little short, but for the whole season this is probably the best team I’ve ever played on. The chemistry was amazing.”

Chaparral kept attacking the Fort Collins goal in the third period but Lambkins goalie Sam Simon kicked out all the shots except for Mundell’s goal.

“We fought and got a goal at the end of the second period and we thought that gave us momentum going into the locker room and you could see in the third period we kept it in their zone the whole third period and had good chances,” added Finnefrock. “We got one goal with four or five minutes to go and we were close. We competed really, really hard.”

Herz, a senior defenseman, gave Simon some credit for preventing Chaparral from tying the game in the third period.

“We struggled in the first and the bounces didn’t go our way,” said Herz.

“We picked it up after but it was just too little, too late. We have a lot of respect for the Fort Collins goalie. He’s probably the best goalie in the state. He’s really good.

But our team is just a bunch of warriors and we just continued to battle and battle. After last season’s Frozen Four, I didn’t think we would be in this position.

We lost a bunch of players but we still proved we are one of the best teams in the state.”

Grandview, Valor advance to boys basketball semifinals STAFF REPORT

Grandview will face the challenge of playing top-seeded Rangeview in the semifinals of the Class 5A boys high school basketball playoffs, while sixth-seeded Valor Christian (20-6) will play secondseeded Fairview.

The Grandview-Rangeview game is set for 7 p.m. March 13 at the Denver Coliseum to be followed at 8:30 p.m.by the Valor game.

Grandview earned its ticket to the Final Four with a 48-41 win over Regis Jesuit March 7 at the Coliseum.

Cole Bott and Roger Rosengarten each had 16 points as Valor shot 59 percent from the field in a 67-56 victory over George Washington.

Fairview ended Chaparral’s season with a 19-7 record as the Knights posted a 55-46 Great 8 victory.

Grandview, Valor, Chaparral and Regis Jesuit were area teams getting Sweet 16 victories on March 4.

Grandview collected a 62-29 win over Broomfield. Senior Lian Ramiro paced the Wolves with 19 points.

Valor sank 11 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off Eaglecrest, 60-52. A.J. Kula was Valor’s leading scorer with 12 points.

Chaparral went into double overtime and came away with a 8582 win over Smoky Hill, while No. 29 seed Regis, which upset No. 4 Cherry Creek in the second round, knocked off another higher seeded team with a 62-58 win over 13th-seeded Denver East.

Rangeview connected on 56 percent of its field goal attempts in a 94-73 victory over Mountain Vista. Junior Ben Bowen scored 27 points and senior Reece Kelly had 20 points in the Vista loss.

Lutheran advanced to the Class 3A Great 8, scheduled for March 12. The Lions defeated Pagosa Springs, 83-62, in a first-round game on March 6 and then topped Fort Lupton, 75-55, in a Sweet 16 contest on March 7.

Lutheran, seeded ninth, will play top-seeded Resurrection Christian in the Great 8.
