The Legend Unified basketball team toppled the Parker Police Department again Jan. 30, the fourth straight win

in as many meetings between the two.

Hundreds of fans roared, stomped and cheered for the Titans in another win, a 56-52 finish.

Students filled the stands and cheered on their home Titans. The cops team pulled ahead by one point at halftime.

A strong second half from the unified players preserved another victory against PPD. The Legend Unified team is made up students with and without special needs. They compete against other “unified” teams to afford every student an opportunity to be involved with sports.

“This means everything to them. Just to be out there having people cheering for them means the world to them because they don’t often have people cheering for them,” said Shelly Boyd, special education teacher and one of the unified coaches. “Whether they make a basket or not, it’s just pure, genuine happiness out here.”

Proceeds from the game went toward the Legend Unified Sports Program.

“It’s inclusion at its best,” Boyd said.

“It’s the culture we built at Legend. Year after year this game continues to grow and grow.”

COPPS ready to tackle parking monitor task President of police support entity discusses volunteer program

Dale DeBerry has been the president of the Citizens Offering Parker Police Support since its inception in 2018.

Still relatively new, the COPPS program will be put to the test when it begins monitoring Parker’s downDeBerry town parking limit — a two-hour maximum from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

The group is made up of gradu-

ates of the town’s Citizens Police Academy, a 12-week course teaching citizens about the Parker Police Department.

“We saw it as fulfilling part of our mission and helping the town any way we can,” DeBerry said. “It was an opportunity to grow our organization.”

COPPS has about 40 members right now. Only four volunteers are part of the Parker Police Department — having completed background checks, psychological evaluations and other procedures as would any new member of the department. These four volunteers will be the ones monitoring parking, although none has the authority to ticket parking violators.

The COPPS volunteers will report parking violators to a community resource officer, who then can issue a citation if needed.

Douglas County School District weighs capacity solutions Some facilities in urgent need of seats, district officials say

The Douglas County School District is growing, and as it plans to address issues with capacity among its schools, it asked for the community’s input. The district recently completed a survey open to the entire community and more than 15,300 people responded.

Most respondents, about 78%, were parents. Teachers and students were the next biggest participants. Roughly 2,000 teachers and 1,500 students completed the survey.

Participants weighed five different ways the district could address capacity issues in coming years.

Those were: constructing new buildings and/or adding portable classrooms, modifying neighborhood boundaries, moving the sixth grade out of crowded elementary schools and into middle schools, expanding the number of K-8 schools, or using open enrollment policies.

The most favored options were new

construction or using portables, modifying boundaries and using policies to manage enrollment, according to survey results presented to the school board on Jan. 21. At least 80% of participants agreed or strongly agreed with those three options.

Students, parents and teachers all showed the least support for expanding the number of K-8 schools.

“The K-8 scenario was less favored but not dismally so,” said Shannon Bingham of Western Demographics Inc. Participants who attended schools that already place the sixth grade in a middle school were more likely to support this option and those where the sixth grade is in elementary schools were not.

Parents’ and teachers’ top option was modifying boundaries — 90% of teachers agreed or strongly agreed with this scenario — while students’ favorite option was new construction or portables.

Bingham also broke down results by geographic area. Respondents were asked to note where they live so the board can understand which options are most supported in different areas of the district.

Request for gun violence awareness week spurs debate County commissioners reject plea for proclamation

Roughly a dozen women sat in the front row at the Jan. 28 Douglas County Board of Commissioners meeting, their arms wrapped around one another for support, their eyes fixed steadily on commissioners, as they readied to share their experiences with gun violence.

Nara Altmann told how the May 7 shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch traumatized her family. The sounds of screams and gunfire left her daughter, then in sixth grade, afraid of fireworks, she told Colorado Community Media.

“She’s doing OK,” Altmann, of Lone Tree, said. But “the main issue is establishing trust.”

The women were there to to urge commissioners to formally recognize National Gun Violence Survivors Awareness Week, which runs from Feb. 1-8, saying it honors victims and spurs community conversations. The board, however, said no, fearing the proclamation could be a lightning rod sparking contentious gun debates.

WHAT IS EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY?

Everytown for Gun Safety launched a campaign to shine a light the stories of gun violence victims in 2019 with the release of its report, “A Nation of Survivors: The Toll of Gun Violence in America.”

The national gun violence prevention organization was co-founded in 2006 under a different name by 14 mayors, including then-mayor of New York City, Mike Bloomberg, now a Democratic presidential candidate who has made gun control one of his top platforms. The group merged with Moms Demand Action, founded by Shannon Watts, in 2013 to form Everytown.

According to Everytown, by each February, the United States counts more gun deaths than other high-income nations experience in an entire calendar year.

Everytown for Gun Safety partners with its branches Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action to recognize National Gun Violence Survivors Week.

Year round, the groups advocate heavily for gun control measures. On Jan. 27, the organization’s support fund announced it would pour $60 million into 2020 elections. Among plans are trying to flip seats in the U.S. Senate. A memo detailing the spending initiative names Republican Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner as an “initial target,” among other elected officials. with other crime victims.

Guenther and other members particularly criticized the board’s stance that the proclamation would politicize gun violence. The proclamation does not discuss gun rights or gun control.

“I feel like we need to change the narrative so that talking about gun violence doesn’t need to be political,” said Guenther, who learned of the awareness week through Moms Demand Action, a branch of Everytown for Gun Safety, a national gun violence prevention organization.

What stood out to you?

The thing that stood out the most to me was how cohesive it is within such a large, diverse — I don’t think people realize how many different things happen within a police department and it all comes together as one. That sort of had me in awe.

How do you go from the citizens academy to become a member of COPPS? From the police department citizens academy, you have to go through that to be a member of COPPS. That’s our only requirement, that you’ve gone through that first part.

What does COPPS do now?

We have four, possibly five, volunteers in the department itself we’ve staffed. We’ve done volunteer work at the carriage parade, at the tree

lighting, at Stars and Stripes (Fourth of July event), the (Cherry Creek Valley) Rotary Halloween event.

What do they do at these events?

At the (Christmas) Carriage Parade, it was trying to keep people from crossing the street so they don’t get hit by a horse. Being an extra set of eyes is sort of what we did at Stars and Stripes. Also getting the word out about trying to promote the police department, in a sense, trying

to show they need support, not the negativity.

Is that one of the goals of COPPS, to show a different side to the police?

The community outreach and having COPPS helps with that. Seeing that ordinary citizens can interact with the police—we’re at every Coffee with a Cop with them. I think the citizens of Parker seeing that it is possible to interact with the police in a positive light is a big plus to me.

Political implications Politics around gun control and gun violence issues, however, is difficult to ignore in largely Republican Douglas County, which has historically shown support for gun rights. The three commissioners often rely on the county’s citizen survey, which shows a divided county when it comes to Colorado’s red flag law.

In the 2019 survey, 53% of participants supported the law, which allows the temporary seizure of firearms from someone a judge deems to be a threat to themselves or others.

Robert Preuhs, chair of the Department of Political Science at Metropolitan State University of Denver, said the national and state polarization on gun violence “tends to bleed down into local politics as well.”

“Gun control is a really salient issue, so it becomes even more obvious to those decision makers that there are potentially repercussions to making decisions like this,” he said of the awareness week.

He predicted most of the county would have been fine with the proclamation or not have seen the political implications, although a vocal constit-

uency would have most likely raised those concerns in commissioner meetings and electoral politics. Some ideas to avoid politics could be to declare a similar awareness week during different dates and under a different name, he said, or designate a remembrance site to honor gun violence victims.

Preuhs also noted 2020 is an election year — two Douglas County commissioner seats are up for election — and the state legislative session is likely to include gun issues, including continued debate of the red flag law, raising the stakes when it comes to gun issues.

“You just can’t escape politics in an election year,” Preuhs said.

How an awareness week is recognized is up to individual communities that proclaim it, Guenther said. And she doesn’t believe the organizations’ advocacy work should cloud the group’s mission of declaring National Gun Violence Survivors Week in Douglas County, which is to honor survivors, she said.

“It’s become so political we can’t talk about it,” she said. “That’s why we did not come to them as members of Mom Demand Action.”

‘That follows you forever’ The women left the Jan. 28 meeting feeling frustrated and unheard.

“Having one week of remembrance would give survivors time and place to honor ourselves and our experience,” said Stacie Penar, a Highlands Ranch resident.

The group’s criticism in general struck a chord with commissioners, who spent months after the STEM

shooting working on initiatives to boost safety and security in local schools.

Commissioner Lora Thomas listed many of the board’s efforts and disputed any notion the county was not a statewide leader in student safety.

Three weeks after the STEM shooting, the board announced a grant process splitting $10 million in one-time funds among local schools, she noted.

It launched a community response team, which pairs a law enforcement officer with a mental health clinician, to work with youths at home and school. It also approved more than $330,000 to pay for more school resource officers in the district. All show the board has been focused on solutions to gun violence, she said.

Commissioners thanked the women for sharing their stories and asked them to participate in the April awareness week.

“We just pray for your hearts to be healed however they can be,” board Chairman Roger Partridge said.

“Thank you for speaking up today.”

But Tassaddikari wanted more than thanks. She wanted greater acknowledgment for survivors.

She tears up thinking about her grandson listening to a lockdown warning playing on a loop in his classroom as the sound of screams and gunshots echoed through the school on that May day.

Although he still has difficulty with sirens and loud noises, “I think he’s doing OK now,” she said. “But he will always be a survivor of a gun shooting. That follows you forever.”

Douglas County awards more school safety grants Two charter schools and one private school receive grant money

Douglas County approved agreements with three more local schools on Jan. 28 as it continued awarding grant money aimed at making students in the county safer. School leaders grew emotional thanking the board for the grants, stating projects would not be possible without them.

Commissioners launched the grant program following a fatal shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch in May. The one-time, $10 million offer was available to be split among private, charter and district neighborhood schools for either mental health programming or the physical security of their buildings.

The county already awarded the Douglas County School District $6.8 million to work on projects and programming at its 91 schools, including charter schools.

On Jan. 28, the board awarded

American Academy $259,636, Platte River Academy $331,605 and Southeast Christian School $263,337.

American Academy is a K-8 charter school enrolling 2,700 students across its three campuses, one in Castle Pines and two in Parker. The K-8 charter school Platte River Academy enrolls 486 students and is based in Highlands Ranch.

All of both schools’ grant dollars will go toward the physical security of buildings. Details of the projects have not been made public by the county to prevent exposing sensitive information about security.

Mike Munier, director of strategy and development at Platte River, choked up talking about the school’s plans, which he said were formed roughly two years ago but were not possible before the county launched this grant process.

“Platte River Academy is going to be a safer place and this summer we’re going to completely remodel the front end of our school and create a very secure place for our children and staff,” he said. “Securing the perimeter, or in this case, securing our facility is one of the critical things that we can do to allow us to be safe.”

They’re called “polydactyl

cats.”

The Ernest QUIET Hemingway Home and Museum current- DESPERATION ly has 40-50 polydactyl cats roaming around.

Cats normally have five front toes and four back toes.

Six-toed cats were often taken on ships for two reasons: They were good at ridding rodents, and they Craig Marshall were thought to be lucky.

Smith Hemingway was given his first polydactyl cat, named Snow White, by a ship captain.

In general, people are thought to prefer dogs or cats, not both.

I prefer dogs, and I prefer a specific breed. I am on my fourth (and final) Dachshund.

I don’t hold much with folklore, as fascinating as it is. I doubt if Hexe, Badger, Smitty or Harry have brought me greater luck than the fortune of knowing them.

Harry has allergies. Determining what they were was expensive.

Bloodwork was done and sent to a laboratory in Mesa, Arizona. The results came back in a book that looked like the one Ralph Edwards used to read from on “This Is Your Life.”

There were pages of possible allergies with checked and unchecked boxes next to them.

The main culprit, we determined, was oats.

But there were others: rap music,

Fox News, hat check girls who wear tons of makeup, and wedding receptions.

Harry now eats a prescription diet.

The dry and hard food cannot be purchased without a prescription.

He takes a pill a day too.

None of this has brought me luck.

But, as I said, knowing him does.

Harry and I read the newspaper together each and every morning.

I look at the front page and moan, groan, mumble and mutter, and all he does is give me two brown eyes that shine with the bliss of joyful ignorance.

Recently, the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners rejected the proposal to declare the first week of February National Gun Violence Survivors Week.

We protect ourselves and those we love from pain and it’s only natural that we avoid acknowledging the threat and long-lasting traumatic and ripple effects of gun violence. This creates an invisible wall that inhibits many survivors to share their stories and the community to show empathy when others risk sharing.

A Gun Violence Survivor Week would eliminate the wall by providing a place in time for the community to heal together honoring victims and survivors of gun violence.

Just as the directors of the movie “After Parkland” stayed with the community as opposed to simply showing up, as they had done many times before covering mass shootings, I am asking if you will stay with gun violence survivors for this first week of February. Will you extend your compassion regardless of where each one of us stands in the gun rights debate? Acknowledging the pain of a community does not take away from honoring concealed weapon owners who have saved people. Our community has the capacity to honor both

victims and heroes, for our capacity for compassion and gratitude is stronger than our differences in opinion.

Commissioners are not extending their compassion through a proclamation, but that doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t.

When reading the news article online regarding the Douglas County commissioners granting public taxpayer money to Douglas County schools, something caught my eye.

News reporter Jessica Gibbs writes that approximately $250,000 has been given to Southeast Christian in Parker. Will additional private religious schools be receiving public tax dollars?

The Colorado State Constitution is very clear. Article IX, Section 7, titled “Aid to private schools, churches, sectarian purpose, forbidden,” states that no county may pay from any public fund or moneys whatsoever to any school control by any church or religious denomination. The Colorado Constitution is silent regarding the end use of any public funds, but is very clear that any distribution is forbidden.

When intent is more important than technique

H

ave you ever heard a really bad joke? Or maybe just a very funny joke told really poorly? We can probably all say yes to that one, couldn’t we? We have also probably been told a story that missed its desired mark or that was shared in such a way that we didn’t quite make the connection.

WINNING But sometimes WORDS we just have to put things in the right context. What if the intent of the joke or story being told, regardless of how poorly it was told, was to lift the spirits of someone who was feeling down or needed encourMichael Norton agement? When we think of it in those terms, maybe we can start to see where intent could be equal to or even more important than technique.

Now you might be thinking, is that kind of like, “It’s the thought that counts”? Yes, I am sure that it is in some way. However, is it

always true? Some may argue that it cannot always be true. Again, let’s put perspective and context ahead of judgment for a moment. Let’s pretend that it is always 100% true, assuming of course that we are all in agreement that we are discussing the intention of a positive nature, not malintent. Then again, we are talking about our readers and community here, so we know that the readership here is always operating with positive intentions.

“Put your heart into it.” “How about we try that again, this time with feeling.” We have heard and know these sayings and others all too well. When used as a weapon or spoken with harsh words and tonality of sarcasm, they are demoralizing and demotivating. But, when used properly and spoken with love and hope, they evoke heartfelt feelings of encouragement and inspired motivation.

Patients, physicians work in partnership

s we settle into the new year, one of the best resolutions we can choose for our health is making the commitment to engage in an active partnership with our physician. Whether we’re just getting to know a new physician or want to further build our relationship with our current one, there are three areas we can focus on to strengthen our partnership.

They include preparing for our appointment, prioritizing concerns during our appointment and an area perhaps overlooked, understanding our physician’s perspective while making our perspective understood, as well.

Many of us may have experienced our blood pressure being much higher than usual when it’s taken at the doctor’s office. This phenomenon, also known as “white coat syndrome” is quite common. Although we may not be able to eliminate it completely, the way we prepare for our appointment can help to minimize it. For instance, if we’re not a morning person and our busiest day of the week is Mon-

day, making an early morning appointment on a Monday is probably not wise.

Unless we have an urgent issue that needs to be addressed immediately, we need to plan ahead and schedule an appointment during our best time of day on our Angie Felts least busy day of the week. Making the time of our appointment work best for us can reduce anxiety and help us feel more relaxed during our visit.

Another extremely important area of preparation is having a current list of our medications with us that include the name of the drug, the dose and the frequency. With the Food and Drug Administration reporting over 7,000 deaths in the United States annually due to medication errors, this absolutely must be a top priority for all of us. We cannot assume that the list of medications our doctor has on file for us is current. Perhaps our

primary care physician referred us to a specialist and that doctor added a medication or changed the dose of another medication. In a perfect world this information would be communicated to our primary care physician.

However, this doesn’t always happen, so it’s our responsibility to make sure every doctor involved in our care is on the same page when it comes to our medications.

Current data indicates that in an average visit, the actual time a physician spends face to face with a patient is less than 20 minutes. With this limited amount of time, we must prioritize our concerns as clearly and concisely as possible. We can’t present a laundry list of ailments and expect them all to be addressed during the same visit. Instead, we need to focus on one or two issues that are impacting our health and our quality of life the most. Having a family member or

a trusted friend with us as an advocate to express these concerns and keep us on track can also be helpful.

Perspective may potentially have the most impact on our ability to build and maintain our relationship with our physician.

Being honest about how we view our health and the way we want our concerns managed should align with our physician’s point of view. If we prefer a more holistic approach to our medical care, working with a doctor who practices a blend of Eastern and Western medicine may be a better match for us than a doctor who only practices traditional medicine. When patients and physicians have rapport it strengthens the patient physician partnership and creates a mutually beneficial relationship. Now that’s good medicine!

Comedy shows adjust to outlying audiences

hen local comedian Michael Jeffries stepped up to the mic at Max Taps Brewery in Highlands Ranch, the room was filled with a variety of suburbanites.

Folks just getting off work, couples young and old, friend groups and beer lovers filed into the seats in the back room of the brewery on Jan. 25. Minutes before, the room was occupied by a crowd from a funeral reception.

Jeffries, 29, who produces and hosts the show, opened with a joke apologizing for his appearance.

“I made the mistake of sleeping on my hair last night,” he said. “I know I should start sleeping on a mattress instead, but mattresses are expensive and the hair is free if you don’t ask any stupid (expletive) questions.”

When Jeffries first started the suburban showcase, he was asked to only book comics who will remain clean and non-political. The crowds in the suburbs tend to skew older and more conservative, after all.

The problem, he said, is that leaves

almost no one to perform. So, he asked the owner to trust him and after one show, he was given full authority to just book the funniest people possible.

“Just because you live in the suburbs doesn’t mean you don’t like to laugh,” Jeffries said. “Even if the joke is dirty … or even against your political beliefs.”

Jeffries is just one of the Denverbased comedians capitalizing on the fact that while everyone enjoys laughing, not everyone wants to sit in an hour of traffic to do it.

A world away While solid comedy is generally successful everywhere, there are some big differences between the suburban and

urban comedy scenes. Those distinctions just might be the reason downtown’s shows are experiencing huge growth and the outskirts are seeing a slower uptick.

For starters, the suburbs are much more spread out, meaning ride-sharing services can get expensive quickly, said Wende Curtis, owner of Comedy Works, which has locations in downtown Denver and Greenwood Village.

Curtis opened up Comedy Works’ suburban club in 2008 after market research showed that’s where the bulk of people are moving, she said.

“It’s 13 1/2 miles from the original location downtown … but it’s a world away,” she said.

laugh at the not-so-clean jokes, producers still tend to book people who lean away from dirtier humor in their sets.

“My philosophy is on a Saturday night if I’ve got tickets available and people can walk in and buy a ticket, I want to appeal to (our audience),” Curtis said. “Chances are you might get somebody a little edgier walking in downtown and you’re going to get somebody a little cleaner if you go south.”

Another factor challenging the comedy scene in the suburbs is the demographics. Josue Flores, a Denverbased comedy producer, describes his target ticket buyer as between the ages of 21 and 34. In the city center, there’s a higher density of this group. A few miles from downtown, the crowds tend to skew a little older, more conservative and less diverse, Flores said.

That’s why the suburbs tend to be a place where local comics can really put their jokes to the test said Korey David, a local comedian and producer.

“The suburban rooms are where you find out what your material actually is,” David said. “It’s easy to pander to audiences in the urban area because everyone agrees with you.”

Most survey respondents came from Highlands Ranch, Parker or Castle Rock. Support for moving the sixth grade was strong in Parker, Castle Pines and Franktown. There was very weak support for expanding the number of K-8 schools in Highlands Ranch, Castle Rock and Franktown, Bingham said.

New construction, modifying boundaries and using policies to manage enrollment were consistently supported around the district.

Bingham has walked through each of the district’s 91 schools with administrators to assess how they are being utilized and their capacities.

Many of the buildings are aging, he said, and are between 20 and 30 years old. They also weren’t built to support the number of non-teaching positions that have grown in popularity since district schools were constructed.

“When I started my career 35 years ago, there were maybe two to five non-classroom-based professionals in buildings. Now it’s 18 to 20, and in those older prototypes, folks don’t have a place to work,” he said.

The next steps will be holding community open houses in April and May with continued updates to the board about which options

are viable in the district.

Director Susan Meek asked how Bingham would solicit more input from people underrepresented in the survey. He said he would work with staff to do so.

“I think only 3% of the respondents were people without children in the schools and we know the vast majority of individuals fit that category,” she said.

Board President David Ray said he was surprised parent engagement wasn’t happening sooner in the process, particularly when some schools’ capacity concerns are at an emergency point.

“It was my understanding that we have a couple schools that we’re very concerned about that we might need to implement some strategies for next year,” Ray said.

Assistant Superintendent Ted Knight said he’s already begun vetting solutions for three to four schools in Castle Rock and Parker that will have a shortage of seats next school year.

“I’d rather not name them quite yet because we have not talked with their communities yet and I don’t want to put anybody in a panic,” he said.

Among three schools, two in Castle Rock and one in Parker, there will be roughly 200 more seats needed by next school year.

The shortage is due to more housing construction in those communities, bringing more families to the district, Knight said.

year and 100 new kids coming in next year, we’re going to have to do something. There literally will not be enough desks in a few schools,” he said.

Knight was planning to present ideas for the most stressed schools at the board’s Feb. 4 meeting. The district would then get further community input from those school communities and decide how to address the capacity problems “as soon as possible.”

“We’re trying to make decisions as quickly as possible so that they have time, but also as thoughtfully as possible,” Knight said.

Southeast Christian is a private school in Parker enrolling 450 students in preschool through eighth grade. It will conduct an emotional resilience program with the funds at a cost of $14,600. That leaves $248,737 of its grant for physical security projects.

Southeast Principal Nathan Teigland said he has already met with mental health providers to discuss rolling out the school’s projects. He thanked commissioners for including private schools and thanked commissioners for swift action following the shooting at STEM. “I have three of my own in school with me and I know what it’s like to hear the questions from second-graders about safety, and I hear these things younger and younger and younger,” he said.

Commissioner Lora Thomas thanked Teigland for representing private schools at the meeting. She said commissioners initially “took some heat” for including private schools in the grant process, which awarded the grants using public tax dollars.

“We didn’t understand how a child who went to a private school was different from any other child,” she said.

Board Chairman Roger Partridge thanked the schools for their hours dedicated to the grant process, and Commissioner Abe Laydon said the school officials’ compliments mean “the world to us.”

“I’m incredibly honored to be here serving with my fellow commissioners that are actually doing more than words,” Laydon said.

“They’re putting their hearts into action and making a significant difference for the mental health and physical school security of these schools.”

Parker, has realized you often have to start safe at the suburban shows, he said. That’s because many people in these areas have never seen a show like this.

“You’re just dealing with different types of people who are going to find different types of comedy funny,” he said. “Once you start getting repeat customers, then you can take more risks.”

David also hosts a regular show in Arvada called Hootenanny, which combines live music and comedy.

“A lot of times people think it will be rough (in the suburbs) but it’s actually quite the opposite,” he said.

In Parker, stand-up comedian Rion Evans and improv comedian Grant Garrison are also both working to distinguish the small town as a strong place for comedy.

“I want to turn Parker into the city that’s known for having the best comedy scene in Colorado,” Garrison said. “I don’t want to commute for my comedy.”

Build it and they will come While the audiences tend to be extra appreciative of these live shows close to home, they can also be pickier.

“When you’re older, you’re more selective,” Curtis said. “You just want to see who you want to see.”

ELLIOTT WENZLER Another reason the community hasn’t taken off more is because of a lack of open mics for people to try out comedy for the first time, said Harrison Garcia, another local comic working the suburban crowds.

“I wouldn’t say that any places in (suburban Denver) have their own distinct scene,” he said, “Most of the time a comedy scene needs a few venues that are willing to regularly host not only shows but open mics allowing new comics to try things out.”

As Denver and its comedy scene continue to grow, spaces like the ones Garcia described will continue to pop up, Curtis said. But will the same happen in the suburbs?

“I think the more urban (shows) are going to have a better success rate than the suburban ones, but you know, eventually something’s going to stick,” Curtis said. “Build it and they will come and if it’s strong enough … they’re going to come back.”

Focusing on teamwork Q&A with Lowe Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Nikola Jokic. He’s kind of underrated.

He just kind of does his thing and works really hard and performs really well for the team.

What or who motivates you most to excel in sports?

I really want my team to do well and I would also say my family. We are all really big into sports and seeing my parents get excited when we win really motivates me to work hard.

What would be a perfect performance in your sport?

A perfect performance would be 100 percent free throws and maybe 20 points.

Also I would say good rebounds and assists. Maybe an ideal would be a triple double but I don’t know if there are enough minutes in a game for that.

What are your plans after high school?

I am planning on going to a nursing school in an honors program and it is pretty much between Missouri and Tennessee right now.

What habits to you have before shooting a free throw?

I always get the ball, take a deep breath, dribble the ball five times, line my hands on the ball with the seams and then shoot.

lly Lowe is included in so many activities at Legend High School that the list is too lengthy to include.

Lowe, an honors student, is planning to pursue a nursing career and is also a 5-foot-10 senior who is one of the leaders on the Titans’ girls basketball team.

“I like to do a lot and just kind of broaden my horizons and figure out what I like and make a lot of connections and have a good time at high school,” Lowe said. “In the future I want to be a nurse practitioner.

“A good basketball team is a team of selfless players who are working for the unit and not just for themselves. That’s similar with nursing. It’s not that one nurse can do it all, but it’s everybody working together to help a patient or help the hospital or the practice. But if one kind of goes out from the others, nothing will work. It is just a unit.”

What is your favorite book?

“The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. We just read it in my AP literature class and it was very interesting to me to see a perspective into the 1920s.

Where did your creative play in the paint come from?

Mental toughness and smartness of the game. Thinking about not what is going on right now but the next play, the next move and always just being prepared.

F

irst of all, I admit that I’m a little old school.

I generally like and prefer the way things used to be handled.

Which brings me to the first Esports League of Legends state championship for the pilot sport, which was held Jan. 25.

I’m having a hard time welcoming esports OVERTIME into the Colorado High School Activities Association.

Esports, or electronic sports, is a form of competition using video games.

It is a controJim Benton versial point for debate whether esports is a sport. It is gaining popularity, and most of the world considers electronic sports to be a sport because of the planning, timing and execution required.

CHSAA wanted to bring the competition into the schools and have a big-time championship, which I applaud, but it is still not a physical sport and it will take a while for esports to attract interest from me.

Ryan Casey, the CHSAA director of digital media, called the first esports championship amazing and labeled esports as a good pilot program.

Casey wrote about the first championship, which was won

by Cherry Creek with a 2-0 win over Gateway. Highlands Ranch and Bear Creek were the other two semifinal teams among the 56 teams that were in the first pilot program season.

Reading Casey’s story was like reading Greek to me, with plenty of words I did not understand — like towers, eliminations and dragons.

Don’t ask what any of the terms mean. This is all new to me.

According to Casey, Vlad Dolzhenko dealt 56,327 damage, had a 13-4 kill/death ratio and 28 assists to lead the Bruins in the finals.

Casey also pointed out that Gateway’s Leonid Chyzhykov had what apparently is an outstanding KDA line of 18/2/11 against Bear Creek in the semis.

H-2B workers will be reimbursed, in the first workweek, for all visa: visa processing, border crossing, and other related fees, include those mandated by the government (excluding passport fees). Employees will be provided w/min daily subsistence of @least $12.46 p/day during travel, up to a max of $55.00 p/day w/receipts.
