Sportsman’s Warehouse to open in Parker Retailer takes over site of former Gander Mountain

Sportsman’s Warehouse will open in February in Parker in the building that previously housed Gander Mountain.

The Alaska-based sports and outdoors retailer will be located at 18420 Cottonwood Drive, replacing Gander Mountain, which opened in 2016, reopened in 2018 and ultimately closed last year. The facility is 57,000 square feet.

“As we continue to grow our brand and business, we are excited to expand our presence in Colorado and California,” Sportsman’s Warehouse CEO Jon Barker states in a press release from Jan. 16.

Two new California stores are planned to open in 2020, one in Brentwood and one in Corona.

“While other competitors deemphasize or exit the space, Sportsman’s continues to opportunistically open new stores and grow our business through both ecommerce and store locations,” Barker states. “We look forward to serving these communities through providing outstanding gear and exceptional service to inspire outdoor memories.”

The release states additional openings will be planned “in the near future.” Sportsman’s Warehouse will have 107 stores in 27 states once the three new locations open. Colorado has seven Sportsman’s Warehouse locations.

Camping World Holdings Inc. bought the bankrupt Gander Mountain in 2017.

Camping World planned to reopen as Gander Outdoors with slight changes in 2018.

The building was built amid a development boom in 2016, when the Gander opened a slew of stores across the country, many of which shuttered within their first four years.

The building on Cottonwood Drive, across from Costco near E-470, was built specifically for a sportsman-type retailer, outfitted with a reinforced gun room and plenty of floor space. Matt Carlson, economic development director for the Town of Parker, said the store closed because of a corporate bankruptcy and had nothing to do with the Parker Gander Mountain location’s success.

Sports and outdoors retailers, like Cabela’s, Carlson said, were an area of “retail leakage” the town identified—a case of sales tax dollars leaving the town for services not offered in Parker. Big 5 Sporting Goods is the only other similar store in Parker.

The next closest sports and outdoors retailer is Cabela’s in Lone Tree, which opened just west of I-25.

“There’s enough difference there in the makeup of their products and their price points we think they will differentiate themselves,” Carlson said.

And, Carlson said, the new store could be a regional draw for the town. There are two other Sportsman’s Warehouses in the Denver area, one in Sheridan and another in Thornton.

Property tax bills are out — questions, frustrations are in Assessor’s office has heard a few main concerns from residents

After property tax bills were sent out the week of Jan. 20, questions, comments and concerns began pouring into the Douglas County assessor’s office.

“We have had about three times the normal number of phone calls and walk-ins in our office in the last few days,” Assessor Lisa Frizell said.

Many of those calling and walking in are asking the same questions about appealing their home valuations, applying for the senior property tax exemption and where their money is going.

The senior tax exemption allows longtime property owners over the age of 65 to reduce the taxable value of their property. For this year’s bill, it can only help those who were eligible and applied in 2019. Residents can apply for next year’s exemption until July 15.

Another major question from residents is why their property taxes seem to constantly increase, Frizell said. This most recent year was an assessment year, meaning home values were reassessed by the county based on comparable home sales. Single-family home values in Douglas County increased on

average by nearly 15%.

Residents who believe their home’s valuation, which makes up part of the property tax bill, is incorrect can file an abatement appeal within two years of the date taxes are due.

Only those who didn’t appeal their valuation when it was initially set in 2019 can apply for this. The process can take up to six months and doesn’t extend the due dates on a tax bill.

Frizell predicted that people would be shocked by how much their bills went up this year due to value increases and state-set assessment rates.

Many people have also asked about what happens to this revenue once they submit it, Frizell said. That often leads to the assessor’s office explaining metro districts and how they came to exist, since there are so many in Douglas County.

“Over two-thirds of the taxing authorities are metro districts,” Frizell said.

Often, the assessor’s office directs folks to their website, douglas.co.us/ assessor, or an online tool called YourDougCoTaxes.com. Both allow residents to see what taxing districts exist where they own property.

“That really explains how your tax distribution looks,” Frizell said.

There are two options when paying these bills: Residents can pay one installment or split the tax into two equal payments. If one payment is selected, it’s due by April 30. If the tax is split, the first payment is due Feb. 29 and the second is due June 15.

Douglas County awards school district $6.8 million for security Grant process shows DCSD sought more than $12 million following STEM tragedy

More than $6.8 million is on its way to the Douglas County School District to bolster student safety, while STEM School Highlands Ranch — the site of a fatal shooting last year — is set to receive $56,000 from the same grant program.

Douglas County commissioners in May opened $10 million in onetime grant dollars to public, private and charter schools in the county.

Schools could apply for mental health resources and physical security projects.

“We knew that our community was hurting, and we wanted to come together alongside of them and our school board and the rest of our schools,” Commissioner Lora Thomas said.

Commissioners on Jan. 14 approved an intergovernmental agreement with the school district awarding it $6.8 million. The funds were to be paid in a lump sum within 30 days of executing the agreement. The board will approve contracts with the charter and private schools that applied at a later meeting.

Commissioners thanked staff for their time working on the grant process — one marked by many unknowns and uncharted territory.

“I don’t think any of us had any idea what kind of workload we were putting on staff when the three of us came up with this idea,” Thomas said.

Questions such as how schools should apply, what sort of contract they would use, if the county would issue large checks or pay in some other form and how public the schools’ plans might be made in the process lingered as commissioners announced their plan to offer the grants.

Many were ironed out over weeks and months as staff set up the program and in close consultation with district attorneys.

Douglas County School District Assistant Superintendent Ted Knight said he was not aware of previous partnerships between the county and schools of this kind.

Securing school buildings A key question throughout the grant process was if and how the county would maintain oversight of the public’s tax money once it was in the hands of schools.

The district’s agreement allows the board of commissioners to audit the district’s grant projects and inspect the project areas. A report is due to the board within 90 days after the

completion of a project or at the end of the school year if a project is ongoing.

“Focus your answers on how the project was beneficial to the students served and the outcomes you observed,” the agreement states. “Provide as much narrative as needed to demonstrate success and tell your story.”

Also of interest was how schools would focus the grants to make students safer, whether that be through hardening its buildings or supporting students’ mental health.

The district’s application showed a significant interest in funding physical security projects. It requested $11.35 million to heighten the physical security of its schools.

Funds would help implement recommendations for the commissioners’ physical safety committee, which have been kept vague, but generally included improving communication and consistency in programs across county schools.

Commissioners formed two committees — one focused on mental health and the other on physical security of buildings — that compiled recommendations for the type of projects the grants should fund and guided schools in how to apply.

As for mental health support, the district requested $1.2 million in funding. The money could go toward an extensive list of tools, according to the application. School climate surveys,

social and emotional learning curriculum and training for teachers and staff in a variety of programs.

The county ultimately approved funding $823,182 in mental health projects for the district, according to the intergovernmental agreement.

Projects include a climate and culture survey, social emotional curriculum, mental health training, pay for trainers’ salaries when training falls outside regular school hours and pay for substitutes.

Nancy Ingalls, the district’s personalized learning officer, said part of the training will focus on providing students with trauma-informed care.

Children often have adverse experiences, she said, and teachers need to know how to spot signs of trauma and be sensitive to that in the classroom.

“If adults understand the needs of kids, they’re better able to provide the supports that kids need, which leads to a culture of safety,” she said.

How the remaining $6.8 million grant will be spent was redacted because it involves the physical security of schools. Some projects are underway or will begin this summer, while other could take longer to implement.

Bill aims to repeal Colorado death penalty After Dems’ failed attempts in prior years, two key GOP votes may change outcome

After years of coming up short, advocates of repealing the death penalty may finally cross the finish line this year with newfound support from two Republican senators.

“From a philosophical perspective, I now don’t think the state should have power over life and death,” said state Sen. Jack Tate, a Centennial Republican who was undecided on the issue last year.

Tate and Colorado Tate Springs state Sen. Owen Hill, a Republican who also has voiced support for a repeal this year, may be enough to give Democrats the edge. The state Legislature has recently seen repeated attempts to overturn the death penalty: It failed in 2013, 2017 and 2019, despite Democrats controlling both the state House and Senate last year.

Democrats haven’t been united on the issue. Two of the three people on death row in Colorado — Sir

Mario Owens and Robert Ray — were sentenced to die in connection with the 2005 murder of the son of state Sen. Rhonda Fields, an Aurora Democrat. Her son was a witness in another murder case involving Owens.

The experience places Fields firmly in opposition to repealing the death penalty, and last year, at least a few other Democrats hadn’t publicly committed to the repeal.

In the state House, Rep. Tom Sullivan, whose son was killed in the 2012 Aurora theater shooting, argues there are certain cases where capital punishment is warranted.

“There’s no question in my mind that the man that murdered my son and 11 others — 58 others shot, traumatized an entire community — there’s Sullivan no question in my mind that he should be put to death,” said Sullivan, a Democrat from Centennial.

The jury in theater shooter James Holmes’ case did not unanimously agree on the death penalty, so Holmes was not sentenced to death.

How Parker’s red flag policy works Town’s policy details procedure, enforcement

Parker’s policy on how to enforce extreme risk protection orders (ERPOs) for gun owners believed to pose a risk to themselves or others does not depart much from the state law passed last year.

Colorado Revised Statue 13-14.5101, known as the red flag law, went into effect Jan. 1. The law mandated local jurisdictions needed to develop detailed policies regarding enforcement and procedure by the end of 2019. The four Douglas County jurisdicitons—Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, Parker Police Department, Lone Tree Police Department and Castle Rock Police Department—will work together in deciding how a standard policy should be implemented as the law plays out.

Parker has not received an ERPO as of press time.

“We really didn’t deviate too much from what the law says,” Interim Police Chief Jim Tsurapas said.

Tsurapas said it is the department’s responsibility to enforce the letter of the law, regardless of outside opinions, but it could address some mental health issues in the

community.

“I think this will help prevent certain things that may happen that are going to save lives,” Tsurapas said. “It’s brand new, so we have to see how that plays out as Tsurapas well. It has a potential of saving lives and helping people that need help.”

Tsurapas said he could not recall a specific incident within Parker’s jurisdiction that has risen to the level where the use of a red flag law could have caused a different outcome.

“It doesn’t mean they’re not out there,” Tsurapas said. “It’s like anything else, when things first come out, it takes time to apply that law and make sure we can look at it and apply it in the safest way possible with the most impact that it can have for what it was intended for.”

The red flag law permits a law enforcement officer or a family member to petition a local court to approve an ERPO for a person considered to pose a “significant risk to self or others by having a firearm in his or her custody or control or by possessing, purchasing, or receiving a firearm,” according to the statute, passed last year. How to enforce the law falls on the shoulders of local law enforcement.

Parker Police policy designates the community response team (CRT),

a county-wide team focused on responding to calls involving individuals with potential mental health issues, to consult with officers issuing the order.

Once a person’s petition to the local court to issue an ERPO is approved, the order goes to the Douglas County Court civil division. The police department has designated its investigations division sergeant or commander as the contact to be alerted about the ERPO and to attend the court proceedings.

A police investigator will attend the initial hearing if possible. If the order is granted, the court will forward a copy of the order to the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office Civil Division. The sheriff ’s office will review the order and notify PPD’s investigations division if the order is to be served in Parker’s jurisdiction.

Police have five days from when the petition is filed to enforce the order.

Law enforcement-issued orders require a search warrant. In those cases, officers will seize the guns immediately. For a citizen-issued order, no search warrant is needed. Officers will approach the respondent with the order. The respondent must comply within 72 hours.

If the respondent refuses to relinquish his or her weapons by court order, the officers are to walk away to avoid putting anybody in danger,

Tsurapas said. A respondent who does not comply can be charged with a Class 2 misdemeanor or be held in contempt of court. Those charges would come from the court level.

“We’re not going to force the issue,” Tsurapas said, giving the hypothetical if someone were to refuse to comply. “We just want to make sure we’re in compliance and doing it the safest way possible with everybody involved.”

If the person attends the preliminary hearing to decide whether to issue the order, a likely rare case, then the respondent would have 24 hours to turn in his or her weapons.

The respondent can also choose to sell the firearms to a federally licensed firearms dealer. If an item is considered an antique or family heirloom, the respondent may turn the guns over to a blood relative who does not live with the respondent.

Once the respondent turns over his or her guns, he or she must notify the court.

Two weeks after the initial order, another hearing is scheduled to determine if the ERPO should be thrown out or enforced for at least one year.

“The most critical thing is to make sure — the order was issued for a reason — so we have to be able to serve that order in the safest way possible, not just for us but everyone involved as well,” Tsurapas said.

No charges for STEM security guard who injured students Shamson Sundara will enter a diversion program, per agreement with victims

The privately hired security guard on duty during the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting injured two students and was illegally carrying a weapon on school grounds, 4th Judicial District Attorney Dan May said in an announcement on Jan. 24.

But the guard also detained and disarmed one of the suspects, possibly saving more lives, May said, and acted in compliance with state law by using deadly force in an effort to stop the shooting.

Little detail District charter schools are represented in the district’s request and will receive some of the $6.8 million grant. But charters were allowed to apply individually for additional grant dollars as long as the projects were different from the district’s proposals.

STEM requested $253,000 to put toward $290,950 worth of work at the school, according to its grant application, provided to Colorado Community Media through a public records request.

The application, heavily redacted, provides little detail about STEM’s plans to boost the security of its building.

County and school officials have said repeatedly they were leery of exposing sensitive security details about local schools.

Video played in court hearings for McKinney, who’s accused of masterminding the attack, shows the 16-year-old walking through the school halls with a gun pointed to his head, attempting to take his life when the guard discovered him.

Sundara was able to detain and disarm McKinney, who will face trial for 43 felony charges, including murder and attempted murder.

Several students were injured in the shooting. Senior Kendrick Castillo, 18, died while rushing Erickson.

Shortly after encountering McKinney, Sundara saw an individual dressed in street clothes round the hallway and then saw the muzzle of a gun, May said. He fired two shots in the direction of the gun.

Both shots missed the person but went through the wall of a nearby classroom and injured two students.

“That could have happened here,” Knight said. “We were able to not get involved in that and instead just stay focused on school safety.”

Knight and the district’s director of school safety and security, Rich Payne, said the committees, comprising experts in each field, were instrumental in keeping the grant dollars directed toward research-based tools.

By the time the committees presented their recommendations in July, Knight and Payne said they mostly suggested resources already used in the district.

“It’s pretty well understood that our schools are safe for kids and staff right now,” Knight said, “and this great, collaborative partnership has helped to enhance that safety for everyone.”

Commissioners said they spent hours discussing school safety with district officials. Thomas felt she gained a “very excellent understanding” of safety measures already in place through the process.

“All of this brought me much closer to our school board,” she said. “I spent many hours with (school board president) David Ray. They weren’t always happy hours, but we debated, and we talked, and I have a respect for President Ray.”

Economists discuss ways to ‘keep Colorado competitive’ Annual forum claims south metro economy is poised for another strong year

The economy of Denver’s south metro area will look a lot like last year’s, experts say, and the speed bumps to the region’s growth remain present as ever.

Colorado continues to be a national model of economic growth. The state is a leader in tech jobs and workforce education, yet it slipped nationally, from fourth to ninth in one year, in a Forbes ranking for the best places to do business. Sustaining that growth will require a look at the state’s funding sources and local policies, local economists say.

“The risks to Colorado’s economy are, frankly, not economic risks,” said JJ Ament, CEO of the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation.

“The risk to Colorado’s economy in 2020 is politics and policy … We can’t let complacency develop of having it so good for so long that we don’t pay attention both at the Capitol in Denver and Washington.”

The South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce held its annual Economic Forecast Breakfast Jan. 24 at CU

South Denver in Lone Tree, a meeting of local economists, politicians and business leaders to discuss the state of the local economy.

Ament said the 2020 economy will look similar last year’s economy. The same problems in the region remain, namely the state’s local politics and policies, Ament said. Ament said the minimum wage increase, which went into effect this year, was one example of a policy that could end up hurting more than it helps.

“Everything I told you last year about Colorado’s economic forecast for 2019 is the same for 2020,” Ament said. “In almost every respect it’s the same. It’s going to be great. Colorado is riding a fantastic economic wave.”

“I’m not going to focus on the economic forecast,” Ament continued, “because everything is going to hold true for this year, we think.”

Instead, Ament focused on how to stoke Colorado’s competitiveness with states such as California, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Georgia, Utah and Texas—states that Colorado is in constant competition with, Ament said.

Utah, for example, spends double on roads what Colorado does, a factor that could affect Colorado’s economy in the long run, Ament said.

“For the first time in six years, on I-70, my wife and I turned around Friday afternoon and drove back instead of finishing the route,” Ament said.

“Don’t think for a second that Utah isn’t explaining that to every single person they meet. It’s not just the mountain traffic, it’s everything else.”

Ament added that Utah grows faster than Colorado in job growth. Supporting that claim was a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics study released last year showing Utah was the No.1 state in the country, at a rate of 3.7%. As of 2018, Colorado’s rate hovered around 1.8% The presentation and panel discussion centered around “keeping Colorado competitive.” Ament said Colorado is slipping in some categories that could hurt its job growth in the long run, specifically the state’s trouble with transportation funding.

“The systems that we have that support our economy, support people’s lives and make Colorado great have a connection to what the future will be like,” said Henry Sobanet, chief financial officer of Colorado State University. Sobanet’s presentation suggested the systems that brought Colorado to this point may not bring the state to the same level of vibrancy in the future.

Attracting and retaining skilled workers locally will be important to maintain the state’s upward trajectory.

Colorado ranks second in the nation (behind Massachusetts) in workforce education level, Ament said.

“There’s very good evidence that an advanced education will make your life better if you measure it by how much money you make,” Sobanet said,

citing a statistic from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “Therefore, it translates into better tax revenue and the vibrancy we have in Colorado.”

Sobanet said to remain competitive, the state needs to invest in its public transportation system. Sobanet referred to the incremental revenue growth seen from fuel taxes — from $4.5 million in 2003 to about $6 million in 2019 — compared to the 43% rise in prices in that time. Sobanet presented a diagram illustrating how Colorado’s Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights clashes with the state’s requirement for increasing public school funding (Amendment 23) and limits to property tax growth (the Gallagher Amendment), forcing the state to foot high education bills, which detracts from funding for public roads.

No one suggested TABOR should be repealed or modified, but both Ament and Sobanet suggested the state needs to find better sources of funding for transportation. Voters last year turned down Proposition CC, which would have allowed the state to retain dollars for education and transportation funding above the TABOR spending cap.

The Denver region can expect to add about 30,000 jobs and 10 million square feet of office space in 2020, Ament said. Many of those jobs will come in the tech industry.

Backyard dreams I worked at Rocky Mountain News 41 years. I always say, “If you’ve got to go to work, you might as well go to a game.”

I got into writing in the Lincoln Log — the (Denver) Lincoln High School paper — and I’ve been doing it ever since … The old neighborhood paper, Barnum News, I wrote a few stories for them.

I’d like to say I played everything — I did in the back yard. I played baseball for two years in high school and youth baseball, too, before then.

I can remember clipping box scores out of the paper and going out in the back yard, pretending like I was an announcer.

I worked at the Clarion newspaper at the University of Denver. I’ve sort of always been in the business.

Set on sports reporting Boy, if there was any other dream I had, I couldn’t tell you. If that Rocky job hadn’t come up, I don’t know what I would have done. I just knew it’d be something like that or in sports information.

I had this problem a lot: Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Sometimes, I’d think I should stop because a guy’s getting (angry with) me, but you’ve got to at least try.

Satisfied with career To be quite honest, you always want to say you want to be at the finals or Super Bowl. I got in a couple things like that. But I never said “I need to do” this or that. I just felt very fortunate to be able to be there and do what I was doing.

Douglas County agrees to continue allowing refugees Trump executive order required action for acceptance to go on

Douglas County recently agreed to continue allowing refugees to be placed in the community in response to a recent executive order from President Donald J. Trump.

The move came after Executive Order 13888 was signed in September.

The order mandates that refugees fleeing violence or oppression in their home countries can only be resettled in communities that have explicitly consented in writing to their presence.

County Manager Doug Debord and the county’s director of human services, Dan Makelky, sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stating that the county agreed to initial refugee resettlement in Douglas County.

Other Front Range communities that have consented to refugee resettlement include Littleton, Denver,

Arvada, Centennial, Golden and Arapahoe and Jefferson counties. Gov. Jared Polis signed a statewide consent letter in mid-December.

More than 60,000 refugees have been resettled in Colorado since the passage of the Refugee Act of 1980, according to state data. During the past two fiscal years, six refugees have been placed in Douglas County.

Almost all came from Burma, with one from Ukraine.

To be granted refugee status, a person must prove that they have a reasonable fear for their life due to their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group.

While refugees are able to move around wherever they want once they’re placed in the United States under the executive order, they will only be able to receive services from communities that have consented.

The county provides multiple services including housing assistance, schools, health navigation and cultural orientation, according to a fact sheet created by the state’s three resettlement organizations.

The executive order is currently being challenged in court and a judge has filed an injunction against it.

C-Lab aims to restructure higher ed using blockchain tech Nonprofit and government holding program launch meeting Jan. 30

For those working in higher education, there’s no shortage of possible solutions when it comes to inequity or student debt said Taylor Kendal, chief strategy adviser at education nonprofit Learning Economy.

One example: A digital diploma that lists every course a student has taken and every certification they have earned. An employer who could look at that diploma, recognize a student’s qualifications and offer them an entry-level job, even if the student has only spent one year — or maybe even less — at a university.

The trick is figuring out which solution will work best and then rallying the manpower to make it happen, Kendal said. That’s where C-Lab comes in.

Blockchain is essentially a method through which data can be verified, stored and become “more transportable,” said Spencer Ellis, the director of educational innovation at CDHE. The CDHE brainstormed the Colorado Education Work Lab (C-Lab) to meet its strategic goal to increase educational equity, after having been part of the state’s former Council for the Advancement of Blockchain

Technology Use, Ellis said.

“We’re really thankful for the governor’s support; he has this agenda for bold ideas, and our executive director (Angie Paccione) does as well,” he said. “It was inspiring for all of us to say, `let’s go out there and see if we can make these practical applications of blockchain.’”

The C-Lab also aims to address the skills gap between the skills that graduates have and the skills employers expect them to have, Kendal said.

According to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment’s 2018 Skills Report, 33.5% of employers do not believe their job applicants have the occupational skills required for the position; 22.6% do not believe applicants have the interpersonal skills required.

To address this, C-Lab seeks to bring universities, employers, blockchain experts and the government together. The lab has invited stakeholders to a free event on Jan. 30 at History Colorado, 1200 N. Broadway.

Attendees will include faculty from institutions across the area such as Arapahoe Community College, Red Rocks Community College and the

University of Colorado.

The all-day event will include panels and activities explaining what the C-Lab is and allowing groups to join the C-Lab network, Kendal said.

Groups in the network will download the app, which will allow them to weigh in as the lab selects its first endeavors. The digital diploma, which could be feasible through blockchain technology, is just one example of what the groups might ultimately decide on, Ellis said.

How students could benefit Courtney Dale, Arapahoe’s BAS Instructional Designer, said the college would like to use this record-keeping technology for students in the school’s bachelor’s programs, which are exclusively online, she said.

The students could earn digital proof, known as badges, for specialized skills they gain through the program. Potentially, they could post those badges on sites like LinkedIn. Adobe runs a similar program, awarding digital badges for Adobe certifications.

Coronavirus test results come back negative at St. Anthony Hospital A patient who visited Wuhan, China came to the hospital with a respiratory illness

Lakewood’s St. Anthony Hospital confirmed results of a coronavirus test from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention came back negative after a patient came to the hospital on Jan. 24.

The patient visited the hospital with a respiratory illness, according to a release from the hospital.

That person had previously traveled to Wuhan, China — an area where the coronavirus has killed 80 people, according to CNN. Nearly 2,800 cases of the virus have been confirmed in China, and 13 other parts of the world have also confirmed cases of it, including the United States, France, Australia and Canada, CNN reported.

At this time, there haven’t been any confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Colorado, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health

and Education.

When the patient arrived to the hospital, they were placed in an isolated unit, a common practice for patients of the hospital who present respiratory symptoms, according to Gianna Lisac, a spokesperson for St. Anthony Hospital.

The virus likely stems from an animal, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Patients who have had the virus reported having a fever, troubles breathing and a cough, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention says.

St. Anthony Hospital is encourag-

ing people to wash their hands, keep a distance from others who are sick, to stay at home when you are sick and to practice good health habits.

“At this time of year, there are many causes of respiratory illness in Colorado and around the globe. It’s understandable that people may be worried about the appearance of a new virus, but the health risk to the general public in Colorado remains low,” said Dr. Rachel Herlihy, state communicable disease epidemiologist of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, in a statement.

Bond set at $250,000 for woman charged with daughter’s murder Kelly Turner alleged to have wrongfully convinced doctors her child was terminally ill

A former Highlands Ranch resident who was charged with the murder of her daughter has been granted bond.

A grand jury charged Kelly Turner, 41, with 13 counts, including murder, child abuse, theft and forgery in October. The charges came after she convinced doctors in 2017 that her 7-year-old daughter, Olivia Gant, was terminally ill, according to the indict-

“It is a good way for a student to prove that they have a particular skill,” she said. “I’m excited to see a way we could move the badges offered only within our learning management system to something that the student can take with them into the workforce.”

She also believes the C-Lab will help the school expand its opportunities to use open educational resources (OER), such as free online texts. Through a state grant promoting the use of OER, ACC students saved more than $85,000 in textbook costs last semester, she said. “We can work together to create something that benefits all institutions,” she said. C-Lab “is a blank canvas, and we all have tons of paint.”

Herron said she would go in the middle of the two options.

“I’m less concerned about Turner’s appearance in court…than I am about community safety,” she said.

Turner told doctors and media that her daughter had multiple conditions including a seizure disorder, autism and malfunctioning intestines. An autopsy later showed she was not facing many of the conditions her mother claimed, according to the indictment.

While Turner lived in Highlands Ranch at the time of Olivia’s treatment, she was arrested at a Glendale hotel.

Turner’s next court appearance will be 10 a.m. Feb. 28.

Cobert spoke about Skillful’s mission. Skillful is an initiative to create a skills-based labor market from the Markle Foundation, a nonprofit tech and health care company.

Cobert said 80% of today’s jobs require at least a moderate or high level of certain skills. Cobert encouraged employers in the audience to consider hiring people on a skill-based platform over strictly looking at experience or credentials.

Cobert gave the example of a local sushi chef who rose to a high-ranking position because the employers were looking for a specific set of skills—attention to detail, ability to do repeatable tasks, etc.

“That’s what we mean when we’re saying looking for talent in different ways,” Cobert said. “That’s the kind of model we can unleash across Colorado.”

QUIET An old adage in journalism is “don’t DESPERATION bury the lead.”

Journalists are not supposed to begin a story with details of secondary importance.

However, I am uncertain what my lead is this week. Perhaps by the time I have Craig Marshall finished I will know.

Of course, by then Smith it will be too late.

If I had to take a guess, I’d say my lead is the wonderful conundrum of language, as per the following (non-

sense).

I read the news today and while I was reading the news I was wearing a red sweater I bought in a store in Redding, California.

There was an article in the paper about a bicycle race that took place in Leadville. The woman who was in the lead most of the way fell back because, she said, “I couldn’t get the lead out.”

As I dwindle and fade, I am fascinated by things I wasn’t when I was younger and had other considerations on my mind, such as the birds, the bees, and how to osculate.

Now, as I swan song my way into the arms of oblivion, it’s often words that fascinate me, and it’s why I am saddened by the abuse of them as I have noted many times before.

Chiefly: the preternatural use of “like,” to qualify, clog and clutter almost everything that is said by almost

everyone under the age of 40.

Why? Why? Why? What if journalists for this publication and for the major dailies were equally lax and leisurely when they reported, oh, let’s say an impeachment hearing?

“There were like all these men and women in this big room and they were like arguing, you know, and this one guy Mitch-something he, uh, boy, was he upset about something.”

I may not know what my lead is, but I know exactly what I am doing.

I am defusing something of great importance with something of little importance. It’s what I do — it’s what we do — in order to survive.

Current national and international news is awful.

Closer to home, if there is an illness or a death in the family, it can be overwhelming and unmanageable.

Think of abundance, not scarcity, and win consistently

t has been said that the fear of loss is more powerful than the possibility of gain. It has also been said that some of us live with an abundance mentality while others choose to live with a scarcity mindset.

In a recent strategic and tactical planning session with a few clients, WINNING this very topic WORDS became one of the drivers of our conversations. We were discussing potential partnerships for the company, and as we did, one person championed the idea while another person shot down the idea. The person Michael Norton championing the idea was convinced that the partnership would yield additional results and revenue. The person who was against the partnership felt like effort would create problems, as they already had competing partners, projects, and priorities.

Basically, the opinion was that the pie was already too small and creating another slice might dilute the best interests of everyone involved.

As I facilitated the discussion and listened to both sides, I stopped the conversation and asked if it would be helpful if I shared a story about a company and individuals facing a similar situation and where some advice that I had been given really paid off. The team said yes, and I shared some of the greatest pieces of wisdom that I had ever received.

As we revisited the abundancy versus scarcity mentality, I first shared with them the following statement, “There is money and opportunity everywhere.” A former colleague of mine who had decided to leave the position he was in to take an executive role with another company had written an email to all of us as he finished up and was about to leave the organization. It was motivating and encouraging with just the right sense and tonality appropriate for his departure.

The burning question on everyone’s mind was why. Why was he choosing to leave? For some, they believed he saw a bigger and greater opportunity ahead, albeit risky, and he was stepping out to take a chance and believe in the abundance mentality. Others believed he left because he saw the company as having hit their peak and that any opportunity for future growth was going to be limited. Fewer deals, fewer sales, and less earning potential.

This was a scarcity mentality that invoked fear for those who couldn’t see the bigger picture.

By the end of our strategy session, we all agreed that the partnership made sense and created a plan to manage the

existing partnerships, priorities, and projects to maximize success while also creating a plan to optimize the new partnership. The abundance mentality had won the day.

Outside of business, how often do we choose the scarcity mentality, afraid of what could go wrong instead of planning for what will go right?

Our defensiveness kicks in and we condition ourselves to think or say “No” first. We see life through the lens of loss instead of gain. Then one day, someone shares with us exactly what we need to hear, that money and opportunity are everywhere, all we have to do is pursue it and take the actions necessary to get after each opportunity.

If we never ask the questions we want to ask, the answer will always be no. If we leave every putt short, the ball

Community service groups push for younger recruits amid membership challenges

T

hey help distribute eyeglasses to people in need in other countries. They make sure cancer patients get Valentine’s Day gifts. They light children’s faces up with much-needed school supplies.

They’re the smiling faces at community concerts and other events.

And yet many people have no idea they exist.

“The name is not out there,” said Mike Shaw, a 63-year-old Lakewood resident who volunteers with the Kiwanis Club of Belmar, a local chapter of the international Kiwanis service organization. He didn’t know what Kiwanis was until around the time he joined, now 13 years ago.

Familiar names to older crowds — such as the Rotary and Lions, similarly minded service groups — have been struggling for decades as participation has declined. A bevy of news stories in recent years — and not-so-recent years — has pointed to that trend. As far back as 1992, a New York Times story sounded the alarm about membership decline for various possible reasons, such as Americans staying less rooted in one place or young people possibly feeling like the clubs were “out of synch with the times.”

“On balance, I think the Rotary has declined in membership and has not appealed to younger generation or women,” said Lynn Hoffman, professor of business management at Metropolitan State University of Denver and a Rotary member since 1994. “My particular club has been a little better about getting women and diversity and younger people in, but that’s not true generally.”

One president of a small Lions club in the Northglenn-Thornton area remembers the Lions being much more of a local fixture.

“I can remember as a kid we would have Lions picnics with all the families together,” said Zoe Reese, whose father was a founding member of her club in 1959. Reese felt the club was more connected to the community back then.

Clubs such as Reese’s have experi-

enced shrinking numbers. That trend may be due in part to an aging membership base, something that Rotary clubs in general have experienced and are focusing on, said Gail Lehrmann, a Parker resident and president of the Rotary Club of Parker.

Many members have died or moved away, Reese said of her club.

The overall trend is a loss in clubs in her north Denver metro area, she said, but some, such as in Arvada and Denver’s Stapleton neighborhood, are new or revitalized.

“Yes, it’s smaller, but we ain’t dead yet,” Reese said.

Theories abound on why, including the idea that young people may not identify with an older crowd. Then there’s the societal change that social media has brought about, allowing young people to find connection without the aid of community groups.

“I think (that’s) partially correct there,” Hoffman said. “I don’t think that’s the whole answer, but yes, they’re meeting their social needs totally differently than we are.”

Lehrmann chalked it up to society becoming “so fast and so computerized and go-go-go.”

“If I look at what I went through in high school, it doesn’t compare at all to what kids in middle school and high school do now,” said Lehrmann, 68, pointing out that parents in this era support kids’ sports teams and other activities. “Kids have so many more opportunities than I had when I grew up.”

Young people today also face added pressure to succeed economically, possibly pushing them to be busier than youth in past decades were.

Many students at Metropolitan State are in their mid-20s and don’t have time for community service while working and attending school, Hoffman said.

“I know they’re worried about doing as well as their parents. When you ask a class, you get half ” who think they’ll do as well, Hoffman said. “Ten years ago, most people would say yes.”

One of Hoffman’s classes is small — only 10 students — but just two out of that 10 said they’ve heard of clubs such as the Rotary and Kiwanis.

Memoir recounts longing, looking for birth mother

Seattle author has roots in area around Littleton

Sara Easterly recently introduced her newly published memoir, “Searching for Mom,” to an audience at Littleton’s Tattered Cover, where the book sold out. Easterly, a Seattle resident for 20 years, says she still has Littleton area connections and memories: Her dad lives in Castle Pines and her sister is in Highlands Ranch.

When we spoke via phone recently, she recalled growing up in the Littleton area: living on Windermere Way and in Centennial (Highlands 460) and attending Powell Middle School, Arapahoe High School and CSU, where she minored in English, as a start on a broadcast journalism career. “I just didn’t do that,” she continued. “You have to start in a small market …”

Instead, she headed west to Seattle, to work in high-speed data processing, which didn’t work out — and met her husband, which did work out ...

“I consider myself a children’s and young adult author,” she said, adding that she’s presently working on a YA novel. She has worked in publicity for books as a career — and always includes Tattered Cover when planning tours for authors.

up an adoptee, with a loving home, but still … She was compelled to seek out her birth mother and be reassured about her origins before she could get on with her adult life smoothly. “In adoption circles, there’s a phrase: `living in the fog,’” Easterly said.

“Searching for Mom” opens, sadly, with back-to-back trips for Sara, struggling with her mom’s impending death, searching and finding spiritual help and launching into childhood memories of herself as a 7-yearold, caring for a dying butterfly and discovering her family church and its teachings, as her mother became more involved there … At 9, she was able to express her feeling that her

birth mother hadn’t wanted her — “threw her away …”

And her struggle to find that birth mother — and to define “the perfect mother” — stayed with her, despite a loving home and parents who supported her. Her adoptive mother did later give birth to her sister, Amy, who married and had a baby named Kenna, with whom Sara fell in love … and for whom she grieved when a genetic lung disorder took the baby’s life.

Sara married Jeff happily and tried to be a “Perfect Parent” to daughters Violet and Olive, but the search for her mother continued, aided by her loving husband … and an adoption

It had been a “gray market” adoption, rather than one conducted through an agency, because the mother was only 15 when Sara was born and she was immediately pressured to consider adoption, so conventional search channels did not work. When that mother was finally located, Sara refused to accept her at first, having dreamed up idealized figures resembling Madonna or Rebeca, a psychologist who headed a group counseling program. Here was a woman who looked like her …

And her adoptive mom really wanted nothing to do with finding the birth mom.

“Couldn’t all three hearts be honored?’ Sara wondered. But as she learned of the obstetrician’s pressure on the young mother, Diane, to give the child up for adoption — and societal pressures, she backed off.

The book continues to its last pages as Sara and Amy travel final days with their mom and Sara finds increasing certainty about her faith.

A contributing factor was a genetic predisposition to a lung disorder, which took baby Kenna and eventually, Sara and Amy’s mom. Later, Sara developed lung problems, and survived a double lung transplant.

Throughout, her faith carried her through and it enters into her final sentence …

Wings Over the Rockies opens drones exhibit STAFF REPORT

With drone applications for home use, entertainment, homeland defense, and more, will people continue to make the critical decisions or will computers take over the controls? Find out in “Drones: Is the Sky the Limit?” the latest traveling exhibition coming to Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum.

Over 75 years, drones have evolved from remote-controlled planes used for target practice into versatile and highly specialized aircraft.

As these aircraft fill the skies, they raise concerns about airspace, privacy, and ethics in modern warfare, according to a news release. iden Okamura is in his 13th season of wrestling and still learning.

Okamura, a 126-pound senior on the ThunderRidge team, was sixth at last year’s Class 5A state tournament and is out to improve this season.

“This is my 13th year of wrestling,” said Okamura. “My dad just kind of put me in it and at first I didn’t want to wrestle at all. I just kind of got a love for the sport the more I did it.

“I learn every day in practice. I definitely want to place higher at state this season. I have a lot of goals that I haven’t finished in my high school career and placing higher in state is just one of them.”

Patrick Mahomes. He is a great team leader and an allaround good athlete.

What music do you listen to before a match and why?

Hip-hop music because it gets me pumped up for my match.

What or who motivates you most to excel in sports?

Definitely my Dad (Kyle), and my grandpa (Randy) is always there for me and I try to do good for him.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

Math. I have just always been better at math than writing.

What do you like to do away from wrestling and school?

I like to hang out with my friends.

What are your plans after high school?

I definitely want to go to college for wrestling. I am talking to a couple coaches but I yet don’t know what I want to do either.

What is your favorite TV show?

“Hawaii Five-O” because I just love cops. My dad is a cop and I just love cop shows.

What is the toughest thing about wrestling for you?

The mentality and your mental toughness. If you don’t step out on the mat thinking that you can win the match, you are not going to win the match.

How hard is it to be the leader in the practice room?

I just try lift up those around me to be the best that they can be.

ometimes for Rocky Beers and his sister Raegan, it is difficult not to bring what happens on the basketball court home with them.

Rocky, a 6-foot-6 senior, and Raegan, a 6-3 sophomore, are having good seasons so far for the Valor Christian boys and girls basketball teams.

However, often OVERTIME what happens on the basketball floor winds up coming home.

“Usually when we get home we talk about our school day and our practice and what happened because we Jim Benton didn’t see each other’s practice, so we talk about what happened,” said Raegan, who is averaging 14.6 points and 9.3 rebounds for the Eagles.

“A lot of it goes home,” agreed Rocky, who was a tight end on the football team and is scoring 7.9 points and grabbing 8.5 rebounds for the basketball team. “College basketball is always on our TV at home.”

“We’re a pretty close family so we tell each other pretty much everything about what is going on, mostly basketball,” added Raegan.

“Usually all the stuff about basketball comes home.”

Both admit to being competitive with each other.

“Yeah we are competitive,” said Raegan. “We race to everything to who is going to shower first or who eats what first and like who gets the leftovers.”

Both almost simultanously utter that Rocky is usually first.

The siblings got to watch each other play several times during the preseason but not during the Jeffco conference season because of scheduling.

So what is the reaction when they do watch the other play? Are there positive or negative responses?

“I get to see most of her tournaments during the offseason,” said Rocky. “That’s pretty fun. For me it’s more like healthy criticism, like `you could do this better’ or it’s like `hey, make your free throws.’

“For her, she is more encouraging.”

Local rescue dog to participate in Puppy Bowl An Australian cattle dog mix from Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue will represent Colorado in the 2020 Animal Planet Puppy Bowl XVI. Aspen was born in May 2019. She and her seven littermates were found in Gallup, New Mexico, where their mother dug a hideout for them near the river and train tracks, according to a news release. They along with their mother, Molly Mae, were transferred to Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue at one week of age. They all grew big and strong in their foster homes. Aspen’s siblings have since found homes. Aspen will be available for adoption after Super Bowl Sunday.

Based in Broomfield, Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue is the only rescue representing Colorado this year in the Puppy Bowl. Since August 2010, Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue’s mission is to save cats, kittens, puppies and adult dogs from being euthanized in overcrowded kill shelters. They place these rescues with foster families until they

Aspen will be one of seven puppies to be featured in the Puppy Bowl’s behind the scenes “Pup Close and Personal” segments. Aspen’s segment was filmed on a trail in Estes Park. In years past, 100 percent of the puppies and kittens that have participated in the Puppy Bowl have been adopted.

Animal Planet continues this tradition this year with a new set of animals that are ready to tumble and fumble into their new homes across the nation.

While we will be sure to keep score of touchdowns and puppy penalties, these pups playing the game are sure to go big and go home.
