Fingers crossed for snowy winter City of Northglenn hopes to complete drought mitigation plan before spring BY LIAM ADAMS LADAMS@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
With 2020 being dry and officials expecting 2021 to be the same, north metro cities are crossing their fingers about snow this season. Though water supply and drought seem out of sight, out of mind, Northglenn City Council discussed the item at their Jan. 4 study session. Tamar Moon, Northglenn’s environmental manager, told councilors she wants to work on Northglenn’s drought mitigation plan as a major initiative. Since 2020, a La Niña climate pattern has been in place and is expected to last into 2021, meaning an existing drought will intensify, according to an October report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The analysis is concerning to Northglenn, Moon told councilors at the study session. “The metro area is in extreme drought. We haven’t had nearly the amount of water that we need for this time of year. So, we are going to be watching this very closely,” she said. At the end of November,
Northglenn had 71 percent of the average water supply it would expect to have in Standley Lake. Meanwhile, water usage hasn’t decreased correspondingly. It’s about on track with last year. Northglenn isn’t alone. Andrew Bliss, a spokesperson with Westminster’s public works and utilities department, said they are closely monitoring local water conditions and the Clear Creek watershed, where most city drinking water comes from. The current conditions, Bliss said, “Don’t yet equate to any drought declarations at this time due to adequate levels of reservoir water storage. The upcoming snow season may perpetuate or completely change the dry conditions, so let’s all hope for a very snowy winter in the mountains!” Thornton’s reservoir supply is at an average level for this time of year, but the city’s South Platte basin snowpack accumulation isn’t, said Emily Hunt, Thornton deputy infrastructure director. “Current conditions have us concerned,” Hunt added. In 2019, both Westminster and Thornton published drought management plans that layout different scenarios depending on the severity of a drought. The Westminster Water Warriors, a group of residents trying to recall four city councilors, filed a lawsuit Jan. 6. against the city over petitions it filed in October. The filing is a last ditch-effort to recall Mayor Herb Atchison, Mayor Pro Tem Anita Seitz, Councilman Joel Voelz and Councilwoman Kathryn Skulley over claims the councilors unreasonably raised water rates. The goal is to overturn the city clerk’s decision that the recall petitions, which would have triggered a recall election, were insufficient. The Water Warriors suit claims the city violated their right to recall and their free speech, as granted by the Colorado Constitution, a press release said. “By employing hyper-technical and picayune standards, the Westminster City Clerk unconstitutionally rejected hundreds of recall petition signatures, thereby stifling the fundamental rights of thousands of voters,” the group said in a press release.
City of Westminster spokesperson Ryan Hegreness said the city is aware of the filing and will respond in court. The city didn’t offer additional comments because of ongoing litigation. City Clerk Michelle Parker’s office issued a final certification of insufficiency on Dec. 7 after finding that all four recall petitions didn’t contain enough valid signatures required to trigger an election. The certification document shows the signatures Parker’s office rejected and the reasons why. However, the Water Warriors have continued to dispute the city, saying the methods Parker’s office used were unnecessary. After the final certification of insufficiency, the recall committee was faced with giving up or taking the city to court. The Water Warriors, who have emerged as a distinct political coalition in town over the past year, claim their battle is for economically disadvantaged residents. In a press release, they said, “Financially strapped families are experiencing more pressure with additional constraints of the pandemic to pay for their utilities.”

As Colorado continued the early stages of its COVID-19 vaccine rollout, Gov. Jared Polis announced that people 70 and older would soon be eligible for vaccination in certain areas. The No. 1 question during a TriCounty Health Department town hall roughly a week later: How will those 70-plus-year-olds actually get it? “We understand that it’s frustrating that ‘eligible’ has not yet equaled ‘access,’” Kaitlin Wolff, Tri-County Health’s COVID-19 vaccine coordinator, told callers during an online and telephone town hall event Jan. 7, where local officials took questions from callers. As of that night, it appeared that residents age 70 and older in Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties — and possibly nearby areas — didn’t all have an immediate avenue to vaccination as shipments of COVID-19 vaccines from the federal government remained small, Wolff said. “Our clinics are unable to provide vaccines to community members who are 70 or older right now,” said the website for Tri-County Health, which covers Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas. The governor announced that, starting Dec. 30, people 70 and older are eligible for the vaccine. But whether they can access it depends on vaccine availability. Some hospitals and other health care providers in the Tri-County jurisdiction have
begun “phase 1B vaccinations” — a stage that includes people 70 and older but also some health care workers, first responders and “essential” workers — but not every provider has moved into that phase, according to Tri-County’s website. “Since limited amounts of the vaccine come in weekly, and even smaller amounts are distributed throughout the state, not every provider has all the vaccine needed to vaccinate everyone 70 and older,” the website said as of Jan. 7. The earlier phase 1A started in mid-December and includes the highest-risk health care workers, and staff and residents at longterm care facilities — places such as nursing homes and other care locations. Once areas have taken care of those with higher priority, they can move on to Coloradans 70 and older. Those people should expect that “more and more places will start offering” the vaccine, Wolff said. Hospitals and federally qualified health centers are among the places where those Coloradans could receive the vaccine, she added. That information was to appear on both the state and Tri-County’s websites, and staff were pulling that information together “right now,” Wolff continued. A caller who identified herself as a 91-year-old mother asked if the public needs to register online, noting that she and other seniors may have trouble signing up on the internet.

In early December, the state listed that the highest-risk health care workers and individuals, and then moderate-risk health care workers and first responders — phases 1A and 1B — were to have access to the vaccine this winter, according to Colorado’s COVID-19 website. Up next in phase 2 were other high-risk individuals and essential workers in spring, and then would come the general public — anyone age 18-64 without high-risk health conditions — in the summer. That’s phase 3. Colorado’s recent update to the timeline expanded the list of those eligible in phase 1B, adding people 70 and older and certain frontline “essential” workers. Those now include health care workers with less direct contact with COVID-19 patients, first responders and correctional employees along with workers in education, food and agriculture, manufacturing, public transit, grocery stores, direct care
providers for Coloradans experiencing homelessness and other professions. “We utilized our first doses at the end of December for our highestrisk health care workers,” Wolff said. She added: “We are finishing up that group of people and moving on to other health care workers who are less high-risk and other first responders.” Amid calls from school district leaders to prioritize school staff for vaccinations, the state’s move of teachers and others who work in education to phase 1B came as welcome news in that industry. But several weeks may still pass before the vaccine generally reaches school staff. Taken together, all the timeline changes may place education workers in line for late winter or spring — a spot that likely comes too late to affect in-person learning for the spring semester. “I’m hearing we’re not going to have our vaccine until after everyone 70-plus, so that’s looking like March,” a teacher said during the telephone town hall. Wolff said she thinks March is a good estimate for when teachers will have access. In an interview by phone Jan. 8, she emphasized that that is subject to change, though. “It’s hard for everyone to feel like they’re not first, but that’s the order Colorado has established for the moment,” Wolff said during the town hall, noting that the order is based on “a lot of ethical and medical considerations.”

An Adams County-specific public health order that had instituted a curfew expired prematurely on Jan. 4 after Gov. Jared Polis’ decision to loosen COVID-19 restrictions. Adams was one of three counties in the whole state with a curfew — the other two were Denver and Pueblo — and Adams’ lasted longer. Under the order, which also tightened restrictions on restaurants and sporting events, cases decreased. It’s uncertain, though, how much of that is related to the curfew. Tri-County Health Department’s order went into effect on Nov. 7. The next week, the county’s 14-day case incidence rate per 100,000 people increased by 41 percent, according to data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). In the second week, they increased by another 14%. It wouldn’t be until the third week when that trend reversed. That was also around the same time, however, when CDPHE moved Adams County and others to Level Red restrictions. Dr. John Douglas, Tri-County’s executive director, thinks the move to Level Red could have had just as much, or more, an impact on COVID-19 cases in Adams. Given that Adams County’s public health order was unique among its neighbors
and a first for Tri-County, Colorado Community Media spoke with Douglas about what the health agency learned from the experience. This conversation has been edited for length and clarity. The full interview is avalable on our website. Colorado Community Media: Why did you initially implement the order? Dr. John Douglas: We were interested in a curfew because we had some reason to believe that personal social gatherings were playing a role in driving the transmission. So, we felt it was plausible, but certainly not proven, that restricting movement in a certain time of the evening might reduce those gatherings. We were being hypervigilant about how we could best balance restrictive measures in the community with impacts on community life in general, but the economy in particular. It felt like an economically somewhat neutral step try to take. Colorado Community Media: Was it effective? Dr. John Douglas: We did see a slight difference in mobility (according to cell phone data). But it was at the same time that mobility was going down in general, which probably had to do with the weather, as it was getting colder … I suspect it slowed things down a little bit. But it didn’t slow things down very much.

Tattered Cover Bookstore is starting off 2021 with a renewed energy about its project in Westminster. The company expects to open its fifth location in Downtown Westminster by late spring, early summer inside the Origin Hotel. Last year, the future of the store was uncertain until the company got new owners. “If not for the new ownership, we probably would have abandoned the project,” said Len Vlahos, who was co-owner of Tattered Cover with his wife Kristen Gilligan. Vlahos explained that the financial impact
of the pandemic on a low-margin business like theirs was devastating. Some of their other locations closed for months when the state stay-athome order was in effect. “In Westminster, while we were so committed to and excited about the project, it was going to break our heart, but we weren’t sure we were going to have the money to complete construction and get it open,” Vlahos said. Vlahos and Gilligan began discussions with the city of Westminster and realtors The Laramie Company three years ago. From the start, Vlahos said they were passionate about the Westminster store, partly
due to the vision for Downtown Westminster. It’s right next to the Alamo Draft House and the proposed Central Square area. Tattered Cover might be able to use Origin Hotel ballrooms for some bookstore events. So, the project meant a lot. Vlahos and Gilligan just weren’t sure if they could move forward with it. Then, after months of discussion with Kwame Spearman and David Back, Vlahos and Gilligan sold Tattered Cover in December. For Spearman and Back, the prospective Westminster location was a big selling point. “Len and the city of Westminster
put together a fantastic deal that was an asset,” Spearman said, “We are super excited to get in and do this. We’re excited to replicate this model throughout the Denver metro area.” Spearman is referring to Tattered Cover’s vision to expand into other parts of the metro area. For this to have been possible, Spearman said Westminster created a workable tax incentive structure. Spearman is especially excited for the Westminster location to host events that feature local and national authors. In all, Spearman said, “Our mission is to be totally intertwined with the community.”

A male in his early twenties died after a stabbing in Westminster on Dec. 31 Authorities have since arrested two suspects, Brett Philip Kalina and Deven Mykol Lamaster, both 29. The incident occurred at Circle K, 7484 Sheridan Boulevard, after 6:00

tim to the hospital, where they died of life-threatening injuries. The suspects fled after the confrontation and wouldn’t be found until days later. On Jan. 3, members of the victim’s family saw Lamaster walking down 72nd Avenue and Raleigh Street, and called the police. Officers properly identified and ar-
rested him without incident. However, by that time, Kalina had fled to Decatur, Illinois. Westminster PD used detective leads to discover this and coordinated with law enforcement in Illinois to apprehend Kalina. There, police also found the vehicle Kalina and Lamaster used to flee after the Dec. 31 stabbing.

The day American democracy showed how fragile it had become
J
anuary 6, 2021 became a historic and a most despicable day in Washington D.C. Thanks to the President of the United States, a sizeable protest CROSS made up of Trump CURRENTS supporters around the U.S. Capitol Building quickly turned into a riot and mob scene which got out of control. The angry crowd easily overwhelmed Capitol Bill Christopher police and stormed both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Windows were broken; protesters got on the floor of the Senate, broke into the Speaker of the House’s office and disrupted the Congressional proceedings on accepting the Presidential electoral votes from
each state. A woman was shot who later died and police were injured. Members of Congress had to be escorted by Capitol security personnel to safe places. The world watched in shock and disbelief as did American citizens. Were we on the verge of anarchy? Was this scene in Venezuela, some African country capital or the United States? President Trump’s action is despicable
This display of directly attacking American democracy is one of the lowest, darkest days in American history. Our American heritage, democratic beliefs and principles and our honored procedures of governmental process all came under attack. I could not believe my eyes watching the riot unfold. It clearly was not a proud day for American democracy. Our democracy has never been more fragile than on January 6.

character as a democracy and will long be remembered. A lot of questions with few answers
What ramifications will all of this have? Already there is talk among the President’s Cabinet of exercising the 25th Amendment where power is transferred to the Vice President. Members of the Republican Party must look themselves in the mirror and recount all the times they should have “checked” Mr. Trump in his intentions, actions and conduct. Furthermore, it begs the question of what will be the future of the Republican Party with or without the influence of Donald Trump. Just think at the time this happened, we have to survive two more weeks of a narcissist, self-centered President who only cares about his ill-fated re-election. In a taped video statement supposedly to quell the riot, he simply poured more fuel on the fire whining about how the election results were stolen from him while telling them to go home. Later he told the crowd how proud he was of them as “patriots.” This whole disgusting incident rests squarely on President Trump’s shoulders. He encouraged the march; he whined about how the election had been stolen from him; he stirred up the crowd which burst through an unprepared Capitol police force. The unruly mob caused physical damage, but much more important was their act of violating the sanctity of the Capitol and the Congressional Houses being disrupted. This act is a stain upon our
arry and I went for a Sunday drive. Only I made a big mistake. I forgot to put the “Sunday Drive” sign in the QUIET window that lets DESPERATION everyone know we’re on the road for leisure, not for the rat race. I apologized to the dog and told him to fasten his seat belt. Sure enough, before I could get Craig Marshall to the corner we were followed too Smith closely by someone who was in a hurry. Undoubtedly in a hurry to get somewhere and start tweeting and texting. The Bangles and I used to look forward to Sundays. The Bangles, an all-woman group, considered Sunday their “fun day.” (“Manic Monday” was written by Prince. Prince had a crush on Bangles lead singer Susanna Hoffs. Who didn’t? However, the song was originally intended for another group. For some reason, “Manic Monday” was credited to Prince’s pseudonym: “Christopher.”) Sundays will never be the same. Not the way they were. At least not here in the city. Maybe on the eastern plains,
Sundays are slower than the rest of the week. Not around here. I drive the limit, maybe five over. It’s not enough. I’m holding everyone up. “Get out of the way, you plodder, you slowcoach, you malingerer. Your mother was a hamster.” Maybe I don’t have the right kind of vehicle. All I have now is this station wagon. No one respects station wagons. Station wagons plod because they’re family cars and dad doesn’t want to endanger his wife and kids. Except I don’t have a wife and kids; I have large paintings that need to be moved from place to place. But the perception is the same: You can and should tailgate a station wagon. What I’d like to have is an AstonMartin DB5 that spews oil and carpet tacks. Harry and I were tailgated five times between home and Elizabeth where I thought we’d be rid of the problem. Surely in Elizabeth on a Sunday the roads are benign. I was wrong. A red pickup honked at us. “Move it on over, you bootless fustilarian.” Steven Spielberg’s first film was a dandy titled “Duel.” It starred Dennis Weaver as a businessman who is driving his Plymouth Valiant in
Southern California on the way to see a client. Weaver’s antagonist is the unseen driver of an old Peterbilt 281 that chases him up and down the remote highway. There’s very little dialogue and none between Weaver and his adversary. Weaver looks like he’s done for but (spoiler alert) manages to outsmart the trucker. The beautifully choreographed final scene, when the truck in flames goes off a cliff, features the exasperated groans not of the truck driver but of the truck. I’m not an advocate of road rage. It’s tempting, but you never know who is in the car behind you. It might be Satan and Satan might be having a particularly bad day. As cars pass us, the drivers usually look at me with disdain and generally with sneers. When I was a kid, the Smiths often went for a Sunday afternoon drive. We were a one-car family and it — most often a Ford — was used primarily for commuting and errands, but not for leisure. Perhaps the answer is to take an afternoon drive in the middle of the night. The Westminster Citizens for Responsible Government aka Westminster Water Warriors has filed a lawsuit in Adams County District Court against Westminster City Clerk Michelle Parker in her official capacity regarding her actions and conclusion of insufficiency on the petitions seeking a recall election on Mayor Atchison and City Council members Anita Seitz, Katheryn Skulley and Jon Voelz. Fundamentally, the lawsuit is asking the court to hold a hearing and conclude that the City Clerk’s actions unconstitutionally infringed upon the plaintiffs First and Fourteenth Amendment rights and, as appropriate, include petition signatures based on appropriate Constitutional standards.
The basis for the lawsuit
If the court were to agree with the plaintiffs, it is assumed that there would be more than enough valid signatures to force the recall election involving all four of the named elected officials.
It is interesting to note that the plaintiffs recite the City Clerk using “hyper-technical and picayune standards” in rejecting numerous signatures and that she failed to use the “substantial compliance test” required by the State of Colorado and adopted by the Colorado State Supreme Court. This test has three components: First is the extent of noncompliance, second is the purpose of the applicable provision and whether that purpose is substantially achieved despite the alleged noncompliance and finally whether there was a good faith effort to comply or whether compliance is based on a conscious decision to mislead the electorate. It will be interesting to see if the Judge wishes to delve into the details of petition insufficiency. I did think the attorney for the citizens group struck a nerve with the reference to the City Clerk using “hyper-technical and picayune standards” - plus noting that the City of Westminster has not adopted the “substantial compliance test.” It will be interesting to see how this plays out plus the time line on when a recall election could be called if the citizens group is successful in court. “I just want to find 11,780 votes”
It was a straight forward call from
one elected official to another. It had been the 18th attempted call from the White House. The caller simply wanted the person on the other end of the call to carry out a fraudulent act and change the outcome of the Presidential election in the state of Georgia. Pretty simple, right? First of all, I want to say that, in my opinion, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is a hero. His conduct was what we expect of our elected officials. He upheld the law, relied on facts, told the truth and demonstrated true integrity in this whole situation. Even though he is a Republican, he stood his ground under considerable pressure with a pathetic influence-peddler who told him, “... all I want to do is this; I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won the state.” President Trump hit a new alltime low. For whatever good he may have done over the past four years, the last eleven weeks after his Presidential defeat through January 20 will leave a lasting huge repulsive stain on his legacy. Goodbye President Trump. The call that could lead to federal prison
But, wait a minute: Mr. Trump appears to be in REALLY hot water with this antic.
According to the New York Times, “...under Title 52, Section 20511 of the U.S. Code, anyone who knowingly and willfully deprives, defrauds or attempts to deprive or defraud the residents of a state of a fair and impartially conducted election process for federal office can be punished by up to five years in prison.” From my perspective, the one-hour taped telephone call with Raffensperger “...looks like a duck, walks like a duck so it must be a duck!” Two Democratic members of the U.S. House have asked the F.B.I. Director Christopher Wray to open a criminal probe. In Atlanta, the Fulton County district attorney has expressed openness to bringing a case. The D.A. said, “Anyone who commits a felony violation of Georgia law in my jurisdiction will be held accountable.” However, forget any attempt by the U.S. House of Representatives at another run for impeachment. ‘Viewing the world in a different lens’

ith health officials continuing to encourage outdoor activities amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there’s one affordable winter activity that’s getting folks outside, active and socially distanced: snowshoeing. The sport, essentially the winter version of hiking, is a great way to enjoy being outside in the winter without having to empty one’s pockets to buy ski or snowboard gear and pricey lift tickets, said Frank Bulkley, owner of Eskimo Ski Shop in Centennial. “If you want to get outside and get some fresh air, it’s a great way to do it. It doesn’t have to be a 10-mile hike either,” he said. “It’s a simple way to get out there and do something different in the snow.” The only things needed to start snowshoeing are waterproof boots, waterproof layers like a jacket and pants and of course, the snowshoes, which can be rented for under $20

per day. While hiking boots and shoe spikes can perform well when a trail is packed down with snow or a bit icy, snowshoes really thrive in snow about a foot or more deep, Bulkley said. Jake Thomas, manager at Mountainside Gear Rental in Golden, says the best way for beginners to try out snowshoeing is to head to familiar territory. “(Go) somewhere you’ve already been, somewhere you’re comfortable with going that’s not super remote,” he said. “Maybe somewhere you hike in the summer.” It’s also best to go with a buddy and remain within cell service, he said. “Any precautions you would take while hiking, you should take while on snowshoes,” Bulkley said. That includes carrying a headlight, being ready for weather changes, bringing plenty of water and snacks and knowing how to react if confronted by wildlife. Those snowshoeing off trails or in the

Snowshoeing is largely intuitive. The shoes snap on and off easily and are lightweight enough to carry in a backpack until needed. “They’ve come a long way from the big clunky ones that looked like tennis rackets on your feet,” Thomas said. Snowshoes vary in size based on a person’s weight and the snow conditions. They work by distributing the wearer’s weight across the surface of the snow, preventing the person from sinking more than a couple inches. “As long as you’re fit and able to push yourself a little and try some-
thing new, it’s really for everyone,” Thomas said. “It is a little more physically demanding than hiking.” Thomas likes to bring trekking poles when he goes out. They aren’t essential, but they can help with balance, he said. “In the wintertime, when everything is covered in snow, things are much more serene and quiet. You get to be more in touch with what’s going on around you,” he said. “It’s viewing the world in a different lens. Looking around and seeing untouched snow all around you is a really cool thing.” Crescent Moon Snowshoes, based in Englewood, also makes foam snowshoes, which are perfect for beginners, said Tanner Dunn, vice president of the company. The shoes strap on and connect to the heel of the wearer’s shoes, unlike other snowshoes, Dunn said. “You can give them to anyone, they’re so intuitive and easy to walk in,” he said. SEE SNOW, P9

For my money, New Jersey’s The Gaslight Anthem was one of the best rock groups of the first decade (and change) of this century. The group specialized in a hybrid of Bruce Springsteen’s love-
drunk nostalgia and Social Distortionesque punk rock. When the group went on hiatus, lead singer and songwriter Brian Fallon started releasing solo records at a steady clip, and “Local Honey” might be his best release yet. Clearly influenced by Dylan and rootsrock artists like Lucinda Williams, the album finds Fallon playing with acoustic and steel guitars and using his subtle pen to dig deeper than ever before. On “When You’re Ready,” he explores the pain and joy of fatherhood and “Hard Feelings” is a stunning ballad that chronicles the challenges of heartbreak and moving on. The
album’s quiet is one of the loudest things Fallon has ever made. Carly Rae Jepsen - Dedicated Side B
Taylor Swift dominated the pop music conversation by releasing two of the least “pop” records of the year. But those looking for something to get them dancing at the club (a word that here means living room or kitchen) need look no further than this b-sides collection from queen Carly. that 2019’s “Dedicated” was less rapturously received (even though it also bangs). “Dedicated Side B” is a bridge between the two, blending some of the more obvious pop sensibilities from the former with the relatively subtler approach of the latter. Tracks like “Window,” have an impossible-to-resist bounce, while all the sexy slink of “Felt This Way” positively shimmers. It says everything about Jepsen’s talent that a collection of songs that didn’t make her album “proper” have more legs than some of the best of efforts of her peers. Long live the queen. Nation of Language - Introduction, Presence
Despite the fact that a lot of 80’s music doesn’t do much for me, I’ve really become enamored of contemporary pop that uses the stylistic elements from the tunes of the decade. It can be kitschy when done wrong, but when an artist gets it really right, the thing hums. Brooklyn’s Nation of Language hits the exact right sweet spot between 80’s synth and modern altrock on their long-awaited debut, “Introduction, Presence.” The album has a dreamy mood that’s easy to get lost in, but that certainly doesn’t mean it’s boring — there’s a propulsion to tracks like “Automobile” that make perfect soundtracks to driving around a neon-lit city at night. And “The Wall & I” is the best album-closer of the year — a marriage of The Cure and LCD Soundsystem that proves there’s always a way to make the familiar sound thrillingly new.

St. South - Get Well Soon
In a year where events often reached overwhelming levels, I can’t describe how much I appreciated “Get Well Soon,” the debut fulllength from St. South. The Australian singer/songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist made a headphone masterpiece, the kind of release that reveals itself to the listener best in the intimacy of two small speakers and your mind. The album is a hushed, inviting affair that does its bewitching by using R&B beats, soft keys and the artfully deployed touch of horns. Tracks like “I’m Still Me” can absolutely flatten you with the emotional honestly — on it St. South delves into a broken relationship, personal doubts and what it takes to exert control on your own life. The introspective among us have a new bard — don’t miss her.
Hailey Whitters - The Dream
One of the best things you can say about a performer is that they’re authentic, and the term certainly applies to Hailey Whitters. A native of Shueyville, Iowa, she did her time in Nashville and found her footing when she started writing with contemporary country greats like Brandy Clark. And now we’ve been gifted with her debut, “The Dream.” The album is at times funny, heartbreaking, inspiring and insightful. Whitters uses her sharp wit empoweringly on “Dream, Girl” and “The Faker,” while “Janice at the Hotel Bar,” is the kind of story song you don’t hear often enough these days. For Winter athletes, ‘Season B’ to start later this month Hockey, skiing, swimming, wrestling and basketball to launch Jan 25 BY STEVE SMITH SSMITH@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
AURORA – The state’s winter sports (ice hockey, skiing, girls swimming, wrestling boys and girls basketball and competitive spirit), now called “Season B” in the Colorado High School Activities Association’s vernacular, is scheduled to begin play on Jan. 25. Practice begins a week earlier. The Colorado Department of Public Health granted CHSAA a waiver for the earlier start. The waiver allows CHSAA to do its programs in line with Gov. Jared Polis’ desire to prioritize in-person or hybrid learning models.
Not every school will compete. Clear Creek High School won’t field a wrestling team. Mapleton School District, which includes Skyview High School, bowed out of the winter sports schedule entirely. Boulder County Health Department officials did not grant a variance for wrestling programs, so St. Vrain Valley Schools, including Frederick High School, will not field those teams. Adams City High School plans to field a wrestling team, though. “We can’t wait to get on the mat,” said athletic director Jason Katz. Fort Lupton High School plans to field its full, four-sport lineup of girls and boys basketball and boys and girls wrestling. Prairie View boys basketball and Brighton High School girls basketball started preseason workouts this week and plan to begin formal practice on Jan.18. SEE SEASON, P20

Legacy High School’s new girls wrestling coach is Jeremy Cortez. Cortez graduated from Sheridan
High School in 1996. He was a fourtime state qualifier and a two-time placer. He’s been a coach since 2000. A tweet from the Legacy athletic department said Cortez won 110 wins – 72 by pinfall – during his
time in high school. He was a two-time Rocky Mountain National champion in the open division and a Who’s Bad champion. “As a coach, Jeremy has been privileged to have multiple high-

AURORA — The Colorado High School Activities Association put out a list of guidelines for the sports contained in the so-called “Season B” lineup. Practice for boys and girls basketball, boys and girls wrestling, girls swimming and spirit teams begin Jan. 18. Most, if not all those programs will continue their pre-practice workouts for the balance of this week. The first games of the various seasons begin Monday, Jan. 25. Basketball

In a press statement, CHSAA Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green said her office has been “laserfocused” on a safe return of sports and activities this year. “The conversations with CDPHE and the governor’s COVID response team to resume Season B sports have been intentional and assertive,” she said. “Though it has taken many late nights and weekends, we are thrilled that our student-
athletes, member schools and local school communities have a resolution. Educationally-based athletics are a vital extension of the classroom.” CHSAA officials and athletic directors and coaches conducted a series of virtual meetings last week to talk about each sport’s rollout. “We’re all in this together,” Blanford-Green said in the statement. “Our state officials, especially CDPHE, have a responsibility to prioritize student safety. We appreciate their support and advocacy for resuming athletics and activities for the state of Colorado in 2021.”
The schedule is limited to 14 games for varsity teams and 12 for junior-varsity and “C” level teams. Postseason play involves a 24-team bracket for class 3A schools and 32-team brackets for class 4A and 5A schools. Players will have to wear masks during play. Come state tournament time, there will be no consolation rounds for class 3A schools. League champions qualify for the state playoffs. CHSAA’s seeding index helps determine the balance of the field. Schools have to play seven games to qualify, pending COVID-19 waivers.
Girls swimming
The season includes a seven-meet maximum within a school’s conference, plus a league-wide meet. All meets have to be conducted within the local limitations for indoor participants. There won’t be any scrimmages or foundation meets.
The season ends March 6. The state meet starts on March 11. There will be 20 qualifiers, plus ties, per event, and it will be a timed final. Qualifiers come from times during the regular season. Wrestling
Teams can schedule up to 20 dual meets. Triangular and quadrangular meets are allowed with a maximum amount of four teams in attendance. Regionals will involve a 16-team bracket and a two-day format. The first seven weight classes finish their tournament on the opening day. Challenge matches will happen from the third round through the end of the tournament. First- and second-place finishers qualify for state. At state, officials will use an eight-person bracket (with consolation matches) and finish it in one day.
Spirit
CHSAA will allow spirit teams to support individual schools “without doing anything participatory” until the regular season begins on Jan. 18. Participants have to wear masks except for 2:30 or 3:00 (for Gameday) of performance time at state. CHSAA encouraged teams to work in pods or stunt groups to eliminate crossover. CHSAA also encouraged maintaining of social distancing during sideline cheer. The only changes may involve things such as warmups and pictures. The number of state qualifiers won’t change.
